Ratings and Reviews

Review of delta app.

My original flight 3/9 was canceled from JAX to RIC via LGA and Delta rescheduled me on another flight via JFK. Then my departure from JAX to JFK was delayed so much so that my arrival into RIC was being further pushed back. I was given the option to change my flight at no cost which I opted to do but I was not able to see what seats were available. I thought at some point I would be given the option to see available seats prior to finalizing the change but that never occurred. After accepting the change I found I didn’t have a seat assignment on the departure and I was assigned a middle seat (which I despise) on the connection. A passenger should be given the option to see what seats are available before making a change. I can assure you had I known prior to accepting the change that I would have to wait to be assigned a seat at the airport and that I would only have a middle seat on the connection I would not have changed from the rescheduled flight. Then to add insult to injury I used points to sit in Delta comfort from JAX to LGA because of the length of the flight. I no longer want to use points on either leg of the flights via ATL and I sincerely hope my points will be deposited back into my account. I had aisle seats (which I prefer) on both my original flights and I’m very disappointed I don’t have them on either flight tomorrow. I apologize for such a lengthy message; I didn’t expect to have to deal with flight changes that would disrupt my trip.

Change of flight times

After several lights changes since the time I originally booked, my international layover went from 1 hour and 45 minutes to only 40 minutes. A 45 minute layover for an international connection is not enough time, especially as I am flying with a family of five, this forced asked to switch flights. In doing so, I lost the upgraded seats I initially used points for. This would not have been a big deal, but it is highly disappointing that delta would not reimburse you for the points lost due to a change on their end. This policy really needs changed. In addition, the four hour plus waiting to talk to a representative force me to try to utilize the chat function. Even though I know I was able to speak to somebody relatively quickly, I made it all the way to having new flights but the person I was talking to left the chat. Waited a while and then the screen turned out causing me to start over. OK I thought, disappointing but just a fluke, but what do you know it happened again. The second time, I am mediately typed “representative“ and then we can immediately going through the process with a third agent. At least this time all the previous chat information was still up for her to review instead of starting back from scratch. The system need some bugs worked out, it’s also very hard to read on an iPhone.

Disappointed!

In fairness, there are many things this app does right - however, the plethora of things that are broken and that have been for years now merits a strongly worded inditement. The app consistently crashes with airport WiFi. Delta blames this on the local airport’s WIfI- but for a Multi-year Diamond Medallion with multiple million miles who sees hundreds of airports each year - it can’t always be the airports wifi - sorry Delta, that Dog don’t hunt! Also, the app crashes consistently (usually while I’m in the TSA line). For me, it crashed 1/2 the time I tried to use it in the last year (I wrote it down each time it crashed). This is unacceptable! You can change the amount of information stored on each device vs what has to be downloaded (and which is the likely cause of these crashes). For example, once my boarding pass has been downloaded - why does it need to be redone loaded every time I log on?? A simple byte of info indicating a change vs no change could flag it and give me the option of downloading an updated boarding pass or not - this would prevent it from crashing at the most in-opportune time (at the TSA line). Yes - I can bypass by taking a screenshot or saving it to my wallet - but most of the time I am running. If I’ve already downloaded my boarding pass - don’t make me log on and connect to get it again! I know you can fix this. Please do!!

How do delta skymiles work, how much are delta skymiles worth, delta vs. competitors, how to earn delta skymiles, how to redeem delta skymiles, delta skymiles medallion status, delta's airline partners, delta skymiles credit cards, flying on delta, is the delta skymiles program right for you.

One of the largest airlines in North America and the world, Delta Air Lines operates hubs at eight U.S. airports: Atlanta (which is Delta’s headquarters), Boston, Cincinnati, Detroit, Los Angeles, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Salt Lake City and Seattle-Tacoma. International hubs and key Delta markets are Amsterdam, Mexico City, Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Seoul-Incheon and Tokyo

Delta is huge on its own, but it is also a member of the SkyTeam alliance, which includes airlines like Aeromexico, Air France-KLM, China Eastern, Korean Air and Virgin Atlantic. Then it has its own separate international airline partners including LATAM and WestJet, making it possible to earn and redeem Delta SkyMiles (and get elite status benefits) on other airlines besides Delta.

But you don’t need to live in a Delta-dominated city or fly the airline regularly to benefit from the airline's frequent flyer program, Delta SkyMiles. If there’s a chance you’ll fly Delta in the future, you might as well sign up for SkyMiles as the program is free to join. And given its wide array of partnerships with companies ranging from Lyft to Starbucks, there are tons of ways to earn Delta miles so you can get closer to that free flight — even if you're not a jetsetter.

To start earning miles with Delta, sign up for a SkyMiles frequent flyer account. Register here ; it’s free to join.

Beyond serving as the loyalty program name, SkyMiles are also the currency that members can earn and later redeem for flights with Delta or partners, hotel stays and other rewards.

You can generally earn miles by flying, spending on cards (Delta has several co-branded cards for its loyalists), traveling with partners, or dining and shopping through designated programs.

Delta SkyMiles do not expire, which is great news for infrequent travelers or those who have loyalty across multiple airline programs.

Based on the most recent analysis, NerdWallet values Delta Air Lines SkyMiles at 1.2 cents apiece. To determine the value of reward miles, we compared cash prices and reward redemptions for economy roundtrip routes across several destinations and dates. We divided the cost of the cash ticket by the cost of the reward ticket to determine a “cent per mile” value for each flight, then averaged this value across several flights and dates. Read more about how we arrived at these figures .

This is therefore a baseline value for Delta miles, based on real-world data collected from hundreds of economy routes; it is not a maximized value. In other words, you should aim for award redemptions that offer 1.2 cents or more in value from your Delta miles.

» Learn more: Better understand the value of Delta SkyMiles

How has this value changed over time?

Like many other airline miles, the value of Delta SkyMiles jumped in 2021 and 2022, up from a low of 0.9 cents per mile in 2020. As of 2023, the value is 1.2 cents .

Delta came in fourth place out of nine airlines in the best overall airline category in NerdWallet’s most recent analysis on the best airlines . It was edged out by Alaska, Hawaiian and American Airlines.

In a separate analysis of the best airline rewards programs , Delta SkyMiles landed in sixth place, beating only Frontier, Southwest and Spirit.

Delta is a bit of a funky airline in terms of its rankings. While some airlines rank consistently high or low across the board, Delta was all over the place. Here's a closer look at how it competed across subcategories:

Sixth in rewards rate .

First in operations .

Fifth in elite status benefits .

Fifth in terms of total fees .

Delta offers the worst basic economy ticket .

First in in-flight experience .

Third in most pet-friendly airlines .

Flying on Delta and its partner airlines is the easiest way to earn miles. But there are ways to rack up miles besides flying, such as using a Delta-branded credit card or spending money with Delta partner companies.

» Learn more: The best airline credit cards right now

The Delta SkyMiles you earn never expire as long as your account is open; this is different from how things work with some other frequent-flyer programs.

How are SkyMiles calculated?

Earn miles by flying on delta.

The number of SkyMiles you earn on Delta flights is based on how much you spend, not how far you fly. The base earning rate is 5 miles per $1 spent, but you earn higher rates depending on whether you have elite status, which Delta refers to as "Medallion" status. (We'll have more on Medallion levels later — or you can jump ahead to that part now .)

You earn SkyMiles only on the base fare and fees imposed by the airline. You don't earn any rewards on taxes or government-imposed fees that are rolled into the cost of your ticket.

So if you are a basic SkyMiles member and spend $150 on a flight, $50 of which is fees, you’ll earn 5 x 100 = 500 SkyMiles. Note, you will not earn SkyMiles on any basic economy tickets.

Earn Delta miles by flying on partner airlines

Each partner airline has its own rules for earning SkyMiles. In general, the rewards you earn on partner airlines are based on the distance of the flight — so they really are "miles." You can earn bonus miles based on the fare class (such as economy, business or first) and your Medallion status.

Spend on Delta credit cards

Delta offers co-branded credit cards with American Express. See below for a more detailed look at Delta's co-branded card collection .

Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card

Our favorite Delta credit card is the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card . The card gives you 2 SkyMiles per dollar spent with Delta. When you pay for tickets with the card, you get the first checked bag free for you and up to eight other people traveling on your reservation. Terms apply.

There's a great welcome bonus for new cardholders, too: Earn 40,000 Bonus Miles after you spend $2,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first 6 months of Card Membership. Terms Apply. The annual fee is $0 intro for the first year, then $150 .

Other ways to earn Delta SkyMiles

Delta's non-airline partners include:

Hotels and Airbnb: You can earn SkyMiles at thousands of properties in most major hotel chains. In some cases, you earn a flat number of points per stay; in others, you earn points based on how much you spend. You can also earn miles at Airbnb. See hotel partners and earning rules here .

Auto rentals and Lyft: Several major rental agencies have an option to earn SkyMiles. And if you prefer rental car alternatives , here's a deal from Turo: Delta SkyMiles Members who link their SkyMiles number to their Turo profile will be able to earn 2,000 miles on their first Turo trip and 500 miles on every trip thereafter. You can also earn miles using the Lyft ride-hailing service. Details here .

Dining : Register your credit card with SkyMiles Dining and earn up to 5 miles per dollar when you use that card at thousands of participating restaurants. (You can use any credit card; it doesn't have to be a Delta-branded card.)

Shopping: Earn miles at hundreds of online merchants through the airline's shopping portal, SkyMiles Shopping .

Transfer from other programs: Delta SkyMiles is a transfer partner for both American Express Membership Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy .

Purchase SkyMiles

You can buy additional SkyMiles through the Delta website, but this generally isn't a good value. SkyMiles cost 3.5 cents apiece when purchased like this, which means you're paying more than three times what the miles are worth on average.

» Learn more: Your guide to earning Delta Air Lines SkyMiles

So how do you use points from Delta SkyMiles? Not all redemptions are created equal. Use these tips to maximize Delta SkyMiles redemption value.

Good redemption options

SkyMiles are redeemable for flights through Delta Air Lines and its partners. In most cases, you redeem by booking through Delta's website. Go to the booking tool and choose the option for seeing the price in miles. Then enter information about when and where you want to travel, and choose your fare class.

How many SkyMiles are needed for a flight? It depends on your destination, but SkyMiles members can redeem as few as 4,500 SkyMiles for a domestic short-haul flight.

Basic Economy: This is a no-frills fare. You sit in a standard seat and get free drinks and snacks. However, you don't get to pick your seat, you're the last to board the plane, you can't get upgraded even with Medallion status, and there are fees of $99 or $199 to change a flight. You cannot book Basic Economy fares with miles and you cannot earn any miles on Basic Economy fares.

Main Cabin: This is a standard economy seat. You get free nonalcoholic drinks and basic snacks, plus seatback entertainment when available.

Delta Comfort+: This is essentially "economy plus." You get 4 inches of extra legroom and dedicated overhead carry-on storage.

First Class: You get a bigger seat with more legroom; free alcoholic drinks, snacks and meals on longer flights; dedicated storage and flight attendant service; and priority boarding.

Delta Premium Select: This is first class with extra-comfortable seating and amenities, available on select international flights.

Delta One: This is first class with lie-flat seating, available only on select long-haul flights.

Unlike some other airlines, Delta doesn't publish an award chart showing you exactly how many miles you need for a given flight. You have to figure it out the hard way — by entering your flight information and seeing what it costs in terms of miles.

Delta advertises that there are no blackout dates for award travel.

You can also use miles to purchase seat upgrades; membership to Delta Sky Clubs airport lounges; vacation packages; exclusive experiences; merchandise, gift cards, hotel stays and car rental in the SkyMiles Marketplace; or donations to charity through Delta SkyWish. See details about these and other options here .

If you happen to have at least 2.5 million SkyMiles in your account — and who doesn't? — you can redeem them for private jet travel. According to Delta , those 2.5 million points are "enough to take up to four passengers round-trip from Atlanta to South Florida."

» Learn more: Plan your next Delta SkyMiles redemption with our airline points tool

Bad redemption options

For the most part, using SkyMiles for anything other than flights will result in below-average redemption values. Delta and its partners might push promotions for these unorthodox redemption options, but don’t take the bait. Unless the offer is really extraordinary, you’re almost always better off using miles for flights.

Because Delta ties the cost of award flights closely to the cash price, you might see some very high award prices when cash prices are high. Although these are not necessarily bad options, it does mean you should double-check that the value you’re getting from miles is equal to or greater than the value you’re getting by just paying cash.

» Learn more: Complete guide to redeeming Delta SkyMiles

Anyone can join the Delta SkyMiles program for free, but to move up from basic membership to elite status (where the real perks are), you need to fly the airline regularly. In 2024, Delta revamped how its members earn elite status in an effort to reward its most loyal flyers (i.e. highest spenders).

How is SkyMiles Medallion status earned?

To become a Delta Medallion elite, you'll need to earn Medallion Qualifying Dollars (MQDs). Previously, Delta used a combination of MQDs, Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) and Medallion Qualifying Segments (MQSs) to calculate status but as of 2024, MQDs are the sole metric used by Delta for earning elite status.

Note: Because of this change, Delta is allowing a one-time conversion of any MQMs earned in 2023 towards 2024 status, or a Medallion status extension for those elites who earned a high number of MQMs. Those who have a rollover balance of 100,000 MQMs or more can choose to extend their 2024 elite status by one year for each 100,000 rollover MQMs. Members have until Dec. 31, 2024 to decide what they want to do.

To earn elite status with Delta, you will need to earn the following amount of MQDs:

You can earn MQDs in a variety of ways, including:

1 MQD per $1 spent on Delta-marketed flights operated by Delta or one of its airline partners. This includes the fare and airline fees, but not taxes, fees (including government fees), basic economy and similar fares, and insurance purchases.

1 MQD per $10 spent when using the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card or the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card .

1 MQD per $20 spent when using the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card or the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card .

1 MQD per $1 spent when booking travel through Delta Vacations. The calculation excludes taxes, fees (including government fees), basic economy and similar fares, tips, room service, other booking charges, and insurance purchases.

Medallion status for a given year is earned based on activity in the previous calendar year. Your status is generally good until Jan. 31 of the following year. For example, your Medallion status for 2025 is based on your activity in 2024 and will last until Jan. 31, 2026.

Status matching

You may be able to match your Delta status to another airline loyalty program. You must have current elite status with a qualifying airline, and you cannot have used the match in the previous three years. Once you’re accepted in the match program, you get complimentary Medallion status for three months. To keep it for the rest of the year, you need to earn it during those three months:

Silver: $1,250 MQDs.

Gold: $2,500 MQDs.

Platinum: $3,750 MQDs.

» Learn more: Which Delta Air Lines card should you get?

The actual experience of flying with Delta is among the best you’ll find across any U.S. airline. With free movies, seatback screens and free in-flight messaging, your time in the air makes for one of the best in-flight experiences you could have. And don’t forget those Biscoff cookies.

As far as the seats go, everyone except people with basic economy tickets will get to pick their seat. Physical basic economy seats aren’t actually different from standard economy seats, but because basic economy flyers don't get to pick, they'll likely end up with a middle seat. If you are in one of the pricier airfares that lets you pick your seat, choose wisely with this Delta seat selection guide .

The Delta fare classes are (in order from swankiest to stingiest) are:

Premium Select.

First Class.

Delta Comfort.

Main Cabin.

Basic Economy.

And some lucky folk might get one of those better seats without even paying extra for it. Here’s the ultimate guide to getting on Delta’s upgrade list .

That’s the in-cabin experience, but what about other aspects of flying Delta, like checking bags and changing your flight? Here’s what you need to know:

Delta bag fees

Delta does not charge for carry-on bags, even for basic economy fares. For checked bags, expect to pay bag fees with most Delta fares ($35 for your first bag on Main Cabin and Comfort+ fares throughout North America and the Caribbean), unless you’ve got something like a Delta card that lets you bring checked bags.

If you need to change or cancel a Delta flight

If you need to cancel a Delta flight , terms vary by the type of airfare you bought:

Some Delta fares are refundable , though not all. Whether Delta gives you a refund depends on how quickly after booking you change your mind, whether you paid in cash versus points and the type of fare you booked.

If Delta cancels your flight (or just delays it)

If the canceled flight was Delta’s choice — not yours — then you have more options.

Delta offers full refunds on flights it cancels , regardless of fare class, if you choose to not take another flight. Opt in to text, email or app alerts from Delta for the quickest notifications related to your flight status.

If your flight is canceled, you can rebook yourself on Delta’s website or app by choosing an alternate flight or sometimes another departure or arrival airport other than your original one.

If your Delta flight is delayed , you also don’t necessarily need to take the same one you booked. Flyers are eligible to rebook tickets to their final destination in the event of a flight cancellation or a schedule change of more than 30 minutes. Delta’s flight delay compensation policy means you might get additional travel assistance depending on the circumstances. Delta sometimes reimburses for expenses like extra hotel room nights, but it depends on your situation. If you do have additional expenses, save those receipts.

We've covered all the basic details of the Delta SkyMiles program, including how to use Delta SkyMiles for maximum value. But if you still aren't sure whether a frequent flyer program is worth the effort, see our beginner's guide to frequent flyer programs .

You can technically transfer your Delta SkyMiles to another person’s account, but it’s almost always a bad idea. Delta charges 1 cent per mile and $30 per transfer, which wipes out the value of the miles.

Delta SkyMiles do not expire, but they might lose value over time.

Delta SkyMiles cost 3.5 cents each when purchased directly, far more than their typical value . That is to say: Buying Delta miles is generally not a good move.

Protect school-age smiles from common dental problems

Facebook

Back-to-school season brings a lot of change, with new classmates, new teachers, and new excitement. As a parent or caregiver, you want to see your child smile through it all — which is why it’s so important to keep that smile healthy all year long!

Children with oral health problems are more likely to miss class and experience challenges at school.

Watch out for these oral health issues

One way to support your child’s oral health is to watch for a few conditions that are especially common among school-age kids. These include:

check-mark-blue

If your child experiences any pain due to an oral health problem or has an issue that doesn’t improve after one or two days, consult your dentist for diagnosis and treatment.

Easy ways to reduce risk

You can protect your child’s oral health and lower their chances of developing any of the problems discussed above. It just takes a little diligence and a strong daily routine!

To maintain their oral health, make sure school-age kids:

  • Crunchy options like apples, carrots, and celery kickstart saliva production, which reduces risk for dry mouth and helps keep your child’s mouth clean.
  • Strawberries and broccoli are high in vitamin C, which supports healthy gum tissue.

Wear a mouth guard while playing sports to protect their jaws, teeth, and gums.

86% of adults agree that having dental insurance is essential to protecting oral and overall health. 1

Keep your kids in school and smiling

Nothing compares to seeing your school-age child smile. Parents and caregivers, watch for common dental problems and work with your kids to keep their oral health strong!

Airlines that offer you a credit if the price of airfare drops

Caroline Tanner

Editor's Note

Purchasing airfare is often a guessing game. You never know if you're getting the best deal then and there, or if the airline will launch a sale or reduce prices in the future.

If the fare drops after you book, you might assume you're out of luck, but that's not always the case. Sometimes, you can cash in on the savings even after you've booked your ticket.

Getting a lower fare within 24 hours of booking

The U.S. Department of Transportation allows flights to be canceled for free within the first 24 hours of booking. This hold or penalty-free cancellation window applies to flights that originate or end in the U.S. on any airline (as long as the booking was made at least seven days before departure). This rule applies to paid and award tickets booked with miles.

Related: Ultimate guide to canceling a flight and getting a refund with major US airlines

If you purchase a ticket and find it's on sale a few hours later, you can cancel the old ticket and receive a full refund before booking a new reservation at the lower price.

This is the easiest way to lock in a lower price on an already booked ticket unless the airline will reprice it for you, but it only applies to price changes within 24 hours of booking. However, it's important to note that if an airline offers a free 24-hour hold, it likely won't also offer the 24-hour cancellation window.

Ticket refund policies for major US airlines

You're subject to varying individual airline policies once you're outside the 24-hour free cancellation window, and your next options vary depending on the airline you're booked with.

Here's how major U.S. airlines handle price drops on existing tickets.

find my trip delta

Alaska Airlines

Alaska offers a limited price guarantee for tickets purchased online if you find a published price from a third-party site for at least $10 less than you paid (for the same flight) within 24 hours of booking.

In these instances, you can request a refund of the difference. However, canceling your ticket within 24 hours (per DOT requirements) and rebooking it yourself would make more sense and be much more efficient.

After 24 hours, you can still receive a credit if the fare drops, depending on the fare type purchased, because Alaska no longer charges change or cancellation fees for any fare except for saver fares.

If you book one of the more flexible fare classes and the price decreases, you can cancel and receive a travel credit to rebook.

Alaska's travel credits expire one year from the issue date, but as long as you book within that year, you can book your travel for any time up to 11 months after the expiration date.

Additionally, flights booked solely with Alaska Airlines miles do not incur a fee if canceled. So, if your flight goes down in price, you can always cancel and rebook. However, partner award fees are nonrefundable if you're using your miles to book a partner airline.

American Airlines

American Airlines does not charge change or cancellation fees on premium cabin, premium economy or Main Cabin fares. It does charge fees for basic economy fares and some travel originating outside of North and South America.

This means if you booked a flight that falls into the "no change or cancellation fee" category, you can call American to reprice your ticket at the less expensive fare.

For paid fares, the price difference will be given to you as a trip credit that you can use toward a future flight, with the credit expiring one year from the date of issuance. If you purchased a fully refundable fare, you can cancel your flight, receive a full refund to your original form of payment and then rebook at the lower price.

If you booked your flight with AAdvantage miles, you can always get the lower fare price (since basic economy fares aren't available when using miles). However, the type of award booked will determine the process to go through. American will reprice your fare within the same booking reservation if you purchased a regular award.

If you booked a Web Special award that doesn't allow voluntary changes, you must cancel the reservation and rebook with the reinstated miles. In my experience, miles return to the account they came from almost instantly.

Delta Air Lines

Depending on the fare type, you can have your ticket repriced within the same reservation if the ticket price decreases the day after you reserve.

find my trip delta

There's no change fee for most tickets originating from the U.S., Canada, Europe, Africa and the Caribbean to anywhere in the world (excluding basic economy). Basic economy flights cost between $99 and $199 to cancel, while flights originating outside of those fee-free regions incur a fee of up to $400.

If your flight is eligible for a free change or cancellation, you can call Delta to reprice the ticket. For flights that incur a fee, do the math to see if paying a change fee is worth the price difference. For paid fares, the difference in the price will be given to you as an eCredit, which normally expires one year from the date the original flight was purchased.

For flights booked with Delta SkyMiles, as long as your flight is cancellation-eligible (the same rules apply as above), you can reprice your flight. The difference in miles will be redeposited into your account with no fee.

You can still cancel your flight for basic economy reservations but with an associated fee in miles. For those flights, Delta will deduct between 9,900 and 19,900 miles from the amount it redeposits into your account when you cancel.

Frontier Airlines

Unlike many other airlines listed, Frontier Airlines doesn't offer an ongoing fare type that allows you to cancel for no fee.

Frontier's fee for canceling a flight is $99 for each direction of travel, so if you find that the price decreased more than the cost to cancel, you can always cancel. You'll receive a flight credit for the amount paid minus the cancellation fee. You can then use the flight credit to rebook at a lower price as long as you do so within 90 days of receipt (although you can still book for a future date as long as the schedule allows). Flight credits are nontransferable.

find my trip delta

If you purchase the "Works" bundle as an add-on when booking your flight, one of the perks is that your flight is 100% refundable. This means if your flight drops in price, you can cancel and receive a full refund — including the price of the bundle — as a flight credit.

You can then use that credit to book the same flight at a lesser value, and the remaining value expires one year from the issue date. Frontier's Elite 100K status holders automatically receive the Works bundle at no additional cost on every flight.

You can cancel any Frontier Airlines flight booked with miles, but there's a $75 redeposit fee for your miles to go back into your account. This fee is waived for Last Seat Award flights.

With the elimination of change and cancellation fees on most fares except Blue Basic fares, repricing your JetBlue flight for less is possible.

As long as you purchase an eligible fare, you can cancel your flight for no fee and rebook with the travel credit you receive. Credits are valid for one year from when the flight was purchased and, unlike some of the other airlines, can be used to book a flight for another passenger.

The same policy applies when using JetBlue TrueBlue points to book a flight, and since it doesn't offer Blue Basic fares for points reservations, all fares are fully refundable. The taxes and fees paid are returned as a travel credit (almost instantly) but cannot be used in combination with reservations booked with points — leaving you with credits to use for a future reservation.

JetBlue also offers a Best Fare Guarantee against finding a lower fare on a third-party website, though you must find the lower fare the same day you make the reservation. Rather than offering you a refund of the fare difference, the airline provides a $50 credit toward future travel on JetBlue. Note the fare price must be at least $5 less to qualify.

Southwest Airlines

Southwest makes it incredibly easy to see if your flight has gone down in price. Plus, since it has no change or cancellation fees , you can always change your flight to the exact same one you originally booked. You can do this easily online.

If you already purchased EarlyBird Check-In , that benefit will stay intact if you reprice your flight as well.

If you paid for the fare with dollars, you'll get a credit for the difference in fare price, which you can use toward a future flight. Plus, flight credits no longer expire .

If you paid with Rapid Rewards points and reprice the fare, you'll receive the point difference back into your account.

The process can be complicated if you have a Companion Pass and have a travel companion's reservation attached to yours. In this case, you'll need to cancel your companion, reprice the fare and then add your companion back on.

find my trip delta

Spirit Airlines

Spirit Airlines also allows free cancellations if you cancel the flight at least 60 days before departure. If your flight price drops two months out, you can cancel and rebook to get back the exact fare difference.

For flights within the 60-day window, there's an associated fee, depending on when the flight is canceled. If the price drops when a fee is required, determine whether or not the price difference makes up for the fee amount.

find my trip delta

When canceling and rebooking, you'll receive a reservation credit for the difference in fare, valid for trips booked within 90 days of issuance on any flight available in the system. However, you can always apply credits to bag and seat fees. So if you don't plan to use the credit for another flight, you can apply it to one of Spirit's many extra fees .

If you booked with points, there's always the possibility that the flight has also decreased. However, the cost to cancel an award ticket is $110, so you might not find the fee worth the savings.

United Airlines

Like most other major airlines, United also eliminated change fees for most fare types (except basic economy tickets), which helps if a fare goes down. This includes most economy and premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. (which includes Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands), between the U.S. and Mexico or the Caribbean, and for international travel that originates in the U.S. However, for basic economy tickets, there's no option to change or cancel your ticket.

United usually allows you to change your flights online, where the amount of credit you'll receive is clearly displayed. However, the system often does not allow you to modify the trip to the exact same flight and fare online, even if the price has dropped. To take advantage of fare fluctuations, you may need to change to a different flight that day to get a future flight credit . And then, of course, you could theoretically switch back to your original flight or fare if the price is right.

There are also tales of a little-known policy that may allow for a price adjustment within 30 days of purchase, sometimes with a $50 fee attached. So, it doesn't hurt to ask United if the above method doesn't work for you if you've booked your flight within the last month.

Redeposit fees are also waived for award travel with United for the same eligible fare type and route as paid fares. If your award booking goes down, you can cancel your award reservation without a fee and rebook at the lower price.

Other ways to get a refund after a flight price drop

There are other ways to get a refund if the cost of your flight decreases after booking, and these will generally work across all carriers, depending on the circumstances.

Pay the change fee

Although most airlines got rid of their change fees, depending on your route and fare bucket, there might be a high fee to cancel your flight. If your flight doesn't qualify for free cancellation and the price difference exceeds the change fee, it could be worth making the change and eating the fee.

Get a cancellation fee waiver and rebook

You might also be entitled to a free cancellation and a refund if your fare doesn't already qualify for free cancellation. The most common situation is when there's a significant change to the flight's schedule. If your flight's schedule has changed, and you can rebook your ticket for a lower price, cancel the original reservation at no cost if or when you are eligible and receive a refund.

Book via a program that guarantees the price in case it drops

There are a small but increasing number of ways to book your airline tickets that offer a price protection guarantee in certain cases. Google Flights is experimenting with this feature, and the Capital One travel booking site sometimes offers built-in protections.

Bottom line

Air travel almost always involves dynamic pricing based on supply and demand. One person may pay $200 for an economy seat, while the person in the next seat has paid three times that amount.

Sometimes, you're stuck with what you paid. Other times, if you're unlucky or mistimed the purchase of your ticket and see a significant price drop, you may be able to get some of your money (or miles) back. This all depends on the airline and timeline.

Get Closer to Earning Delta Status When You Book a Hotel or Rental Car for a Limited Time

Score 1 Medallion Qualification Dollar (MQD) per $1 spent plus miles when you book hotels, vacation rentals, and car rentals.

benedek/Getty Images

Having elite status can get you the finer things in life, and Delta’s latest promotion may just put you in reach.

“For a limited time, earn $1 Medallion Qualification Dollar (MQD) per $1 spent plus miles when you book hotels, vacation rentals, and car rentals with Delta through June 24, 2024," the airline shared .

To score the rewards, travelers can log on to the Delta Travel Extras portal with their Delta SkyMiles number to book hotels, vacation homes, and rental cars. As every dollar spent accrues one Medallion Qualification Dollar (MQD), fliers can quickly earn their way to Delta elite status in other ways besides flying.

Delta’s Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQD) are different from SkyMiles, the latter of which are redeemable for free flights. The following MQD thresholds are required to qualify for Delta Medallion status:

  • Silver Medallion - $6,000 MQDs
  • Gold Medallion - $12,000 MQDs
  • Platinum Medallion - $18,000 MQDs
  • Diamond Medallion - $35,000 MQDs

Travelers typically earn 1 MQD per $1 spent on flights operated by Delta or partner airlines. Once a certain threshold is achieved, elite status will be granted to the member for the remainder of the year — and the entire year thereafter.

Spending $35,000 on Delta flights to earn top-tier Diamond status might be out of reach for most travelers. However, the opportunity to earn elite points from hotels and rental cars for a limited time may help them reach that next tier of elite status.

Earning MQDs from a few of Delta’s personal and business credit cards, which come with a $2,500 MQD headstart for the qualification year, is also possible. Delta Platinum cardholders can earn 1 MQD per $20 spent on purchases, while Delta Reserve cardholders can earn 1 MQD per $10 spent.

The top-tier Delta Reserve has an exclusive card design right now made out of the airline’s retired Boeing 747 aircraft. Travelers who want their hands on a piece of history — and rack up a ton of MQDs — should consider adding this limited-edition card to their wallet.

My first visit to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam was in December 2003. Back then, I was part of the Olympic Council Of Malaysia secretariat during the 22nd South-East Asia Games, or Sea Games.

At the time, most of us on the council had to work for about 10 hours each day, so unfortunately for me, the only places I could visit were the sports venues, particularly the basketball and tennis courts.

The only tourist attraction I managed to check out were the historical post office, the opera house and central market.

Josephine holding a live bee hive.

More than 20 years later, I again visited the city, this time with my wife and son. We arrived in Ho Chi Minh City on Valentine’s Day this year, and the first thing I noticed was just how modern the airport was now. So many things have been improved and upgraded.

With my wife, Josephine, and eight-year-old son Samson in tow, we checked out a food court near our hotel. There was a wide range of food options available, although the place looked like it catered mostly to international tourists.

On the second day we went on our first tour, a cruise on the Mekong Delta by speed boat. We enjoyed the fresh air though we did notice the murky waters.

At the same time we also saw unspoiled lush greenery on the smaller islands.

We visited a coconut candy manufacturer and a bee farm, where my wife held a bee hive. After that, we stopped at a fruit village where our English-speaking tour guide spoke to us about the varieties of fruits and animals there. We were then served slices of fruits sprinkled with salt and chilli.

Our final stop was on an island where crocodiles and fish were reared.

The next day we joined another excursion, this time for a tour of the beach city of Vung Tao. I was so impressed by the statue of Jesus perched on a hill facing the South China Sea.

Samson at the City Square in Ho Chi Minh.

This statue, which kind of reminds me of a similar statue in Brazil’s Rio De Janeiro, began construction in March 1974 and was finally inaugurated on Dec 2, 1994. You have to walk up 512 steps to get to the peak here, for a glimpse of the cityscape as well as the beachfront.

After an appetising lunch at a seafood restaurant, we spent an hour walking and just enjoying the beach, as well as checking out the souvenirs.

We did our shopping on our last day in the city at the Ben Tanh Market and shopping malls. We also visited the Notre Dame Cathedral (which was being renovated), the French-built post office, and the beautiful Opera House.

It was a short but satisfying holiday as I finally fulfilled my wish of visiting Ho Chi Minh again, after my first trip two decades ago.
