Luxury Tiny Homes Are Taking Over This College Campus

W hether you've recently graduated from university or it's been decades since you hung up your cap and gown, one thing you remember is how dorm life treated you. Every campus boasts different living situations. Some offer four-person suite-style rooms that share a bathroom , others provide single sleeping options, and who could forget the stereotypical dorm which slept two to a (tiny) room and had every person on the floor sharing a communal bathroom?

Many campuses take student accommodations up a notch and offer university housing options, which are typically apartments owned by the school. These can be more comfortable than dorm rooms, but, in most cases, are usually boring and basic. However, one college in North Carolina — High Point University (HPU)—has come up with an alternative to bland university housing that's as whimsical as it is trendy: They've created a tiny home community.

The Instagram account @tinyhouse.top posted a reel showing off HPU's adorable little student neighborhood, and it blew up with over 23,000 likes. But this is no new idea! HPU has been spotlighting this housing option, which was introduced in the fall of 2022, for a while on TikTok, showing off the homes Caleb Simpson -style with a full tour of one of them.

A single tiny home is basically just like any other one-person, open concept apartment, fit with a decent kitchen, a living room, a space for a table, and a lofted bedroom with a walk-in closet. And in a major bonus, it appears that each one comes with its own outdoor space—at least enough yard for a dog to run around in during its outdoor time. In another TikTok , you can see more of the entire neighborhood of tiny homes, all with at least one parking space in the street just before the front yard.

According to the HPU website , each of the tiny homes comes equipped with a full-size bed, kitchen appliances, and a furnished living area complete with a study desk, and the total square footage is around 500 square feet. They are a bit on the higher end of the rental spectrum, coming in at $17,541 per year, or around $1,462 per month. But the location, along with the opportunity to live by oneself, is what makes these options so appealing. As the student in the video says towards the end, his classes are within walking distance and the basketball arena is right across the road. Plus, it's located near other housing options and the new Panther Commons residence hall as well, which has a gym, exercise classes, a barbershop, and a nail salon.

Though these tiny homes are not as affordable as other campus housing, they come with a good number of perks. If you were still in school would a tiny house be part of your big dreams?

TINY homes have become a trendy way to downsize your life.

One mobile home company recently showed off a tiny house with two bedrooms.

Mountain Brook Homes Center in Hamilton, Alabama , is one of several retailers selling the model, called “the Wedge.” 

It’s made by the manufacturer Chariot Eagle .

Many tiny homes have one bedroom or function like a studio apartment, but this 13-foot by 38-foot unit has two separate bedrooms.

At around 500 square feet, the unit includes numerous space-saving features.

Mountain Brook Homes is offering the home for about $115,000, an employee told The U.S. Sun.

Prices can vary, and the company offers individualized estimates.

In a video tour of the unit on YouTube, Mountain Brook showed off the unit’s features.

They called it “high-quality construction,” citing finished drywall and high ceilings.

Researchers find a tiny organism has the power to reduce a persistent greenhouse gas in farm fields

In the world of greenhouse gas emissions, carbon dioxide gets most of the blame. But tiny organisms that flourish in the world's farm fields emit a far more potent gas, nitrous oxide, and scientists have long sought a way to address it.

Now some researchers think they’ve found a bacteria that can help. Writing in this week's Nature, they say extensive lab and field trials showed the naturally derived bacteria reduced the nitrous oxide without disrupting other microbes in the soil. It also survived well in soil and would be relatively cheap to produce.

“I think that the avenue that we have opened here, it opens up for a number of new possibilities in bioengineering of the farmed soil,” said Lars Bakken, a professor at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences and one of the authors of the study.

A pound of nitrous oxide — better known as laughing gas, the stuff that relaxes people in the dentist's chair — can warm the atmosphere 265 times more than a pound of carbon dioxide, and it can persist in the atmosphere for more than a century. Farmers' heavy use of nitrogen fertilizer drives up the amount produced in soil, and in 2022 it accounted for 6% of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions from human activities, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Reducing fertilizer use can help, but crop yields would eventually fall.

That's a big problem in agriculture, “so the fact that they have developed a unique strategy to reduce it pretty dramatically was really interesting,” said Lori Hoagland, a professor of soil microbial ecology at Purdue University who was not involved in the study.

Bakken and his colleagues used organic waste to grow their bacteria, reasoning that many farmers already apply processed manure-based fertilizers so it could be easily integrated into their routines. Building on past work, they searched for a microorganism that would last long enough to make a real dent in nitrous oxide emissions without staying in the soil so long that it disrupted other tiny life forms that are often vital for crop health.

In field trials, they used roving robots to measure nitrous oxide emissions day and night, comparing conditions in soil with and without the bacteria. They found the bacteria reduced the nitrous oxide emissions of an initial fertilizer application by 94%, and a couple weeks later, dropped the emissions of a subsequent fertilizer application by about half. After about three months, there was no difference in the makeup of microbial life forms, suggesting their bacteria wouldn't disrupt the soil.

The bacteria they settled on — Cloacibacterium sp. CB-01 — is found naturally in anaerobic digesters, machines that are already being used to transform organic waste products like cow manure into biofuels. The fact that the bacteria is not genetically modified might ease its acceptance and adoption, said Paul Carini, a soil microbiologist at the University of Arizona who was also not involved in the research.

Bakken said the bacteria could be included in certain fertilizers on farms as soon as three to four years from now if the economics make sense.

Carini thinks they do.

"Any time you’re using a waste product from one industry to benefit another industry, that’s pretty cost effective," he said.

However, Bakken pointed out that farmers aren't paid for reducing nitrous oxide emissions, and he thinks there have to be more incentives to do so. “The task for the authorities is to install policy instruments that makes it profitable in one way or another,” he said.

Hoagland, the Purdue professor, said more research in field conditions would likely be needed before the bacteria could be deployed worldwide, as there are many different types of farm soils.

"If they can get this to work across soils and things, it would just have a tremendous impact, for sure," she said.

It's a challenge that has long vexed academics as well as major agricultural companies that have tried to develop organisms that can be added to the soil for beneficial effect, Carini said. He said that where many inquiries in this direction have been spotty, this one had clearer results.

Like Hoagland, he said more work is needed to prove the bacteria's effectiveness. But he called the work a blueprint for selecting beneficial organisms that can be added to soil.

“I think this is the next frontier in soil agriculture research," he said.

Federal prosecutors are preparing to bring Sean “Diddy” Combs’ accusers in front of a grand jury, indicating that the US Justice Department is moving toward seeking an indictment against the embattled music mogul, according to a new report.

Witnesses have been notified by investigators that they could be called to testify in front of a federal grand jury in New York City, a source told CNN Wednesday.

The Bad Boy Records founder has been hit with eight civil lawsuits , seven of which have accused him of sexual assault. His on-again, off-again girlfriend Cassie Ventura was the first to accuse him of rape and repeated physical abuse in a disturbing suit filed in November 2023.

A second source told the outlet that investigators are being thorough and taking their time to ensure that the potential indictment is “bulletproof.”

A spokesperson for Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) declined to comment to CNN on the existence of a grand jury but noted the agency’s investigation remains ongoing. Combs’ attorney didn’t immediately return Page Six’s request for comment.

The rapper, 54, and Ventura, 37, settled out of court within one day of her filing suit, but surveillance footage of him violently beating her in a hotel hallway in 2016 leaked earlier this month.

In the video, the “Me & U” singer is seen exiting a hotel room with several bags, walking quickly to the elevators. She is wearing a black hoodie over her head, jeans and sneakers. Shortly after, her then-boyfriend appears in nothing but a towel and runs toward her. He grabs her by the neck before kicking her while she lay on the floor.

Ventura addressed the shocking footage for the first time last week, writing on Instagram, “Thank you for all the love and support from my family, friends, strangers and those I have yet to meet. The outpouring of love has created a place for my younger self to settle and feel safe now, but this is only the beginning.”

She continued, “Domestic violence is THE issue. It broke me down to someone I never thought I would become.”

Combs, for his part, issued an apology days after the horrendous video went viral, calling the incident the one of the “darkest times” of his life.

“I was f—ked up. I mean, I hit rock bottom, but I make no excuses,” he shared on social media.

“My behavior on that video is inexcusable. I take full responsibility for my actions in that video. I’m disgusted.”

However, prior to the surveillance footage surfacing, Combs had vehemently denied Ventura’s allegations of abuse and rape, calling them “offensive and outrageous.”

The Department of Homeland Security raided Combs’ Los Angeles and Miami estates in March in connection to allegations of sex trafficking, money laundering and illegal drugs.
