Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Elite hands-on review

Kelty’s journey perfectfit elite gets you back on the trail with a toddler.

After your child is born, resuming an active, outdoor lifestyle is no small feat. Either you’re leaving your significant other and child at home, finding a sitter, or looking for a way to carry your kiddo. The first two are up to you, but if you opt for the latter, there are a multitude of front and back carriers options on the market. For a serious hiker, a backpack model is the only way to go and for a full-day hike, there are few options better than Kelty’s Journey PerfectFIT Elite .

Despite the price tag, the peace of mind is worth it, the pack is light when it’s not fully loaded.

Out of the box, the base weight of the pack is surprisingly light, tipping the scale at just 7 pounds, 4 ounces. Though it seemed like this would translate to feeling light on our shoulders, when amassing a collection of lunch food, snacks, spare clothes, diapers and water (there is a hydration system pocket that fits a 60-ounce bladder), the weight adds up quickly. This is before you even strap in your 20-pound kid.

The typical rule of thumb is that a loaded daypack should weigh no more than 10 percent of your body weight while a backpacking pack shouldn’t exceed 20 percent. If kid-plus-pack equals 27 pounds, you’d need to weigh two-hundred and seventy pounds to obey the daypack rule and in that case, you’re probably not an avid hiker to begin with. So, you need to mentally prepare yourself to be carrying around 35 to 40 pounds with this pack.

Once you clear this initial weight hurdle, there are plenty of creature comforts to get excited about. Thankfully, the shoulder and waist padding aid in distributing the pack’s weight comfortably and we didn’t notice any hot spots during our test hikes. The PerfectFit suspension system can easily and quickly be adjusted to the wearer for smaller and larger torso sizes.

The Elite model has a dry pouch for keeping soiled items separate from the rest of your gear and its hipbelt pockets are large enough to fit most modern XL or Plus smartphones — which will inevitably be in and out of the pocket often as you snap pics of your baby’s first time in the backcountry.

From a safety standpoint, the Journey PerfectFIT Elite offers a 5-point strap system and roll cage that helps keep your child secure, especially if you’re scrambling over rugged terrain. The only downside to having so many straps is that it does take a few minutes to initially adjust to your kid’s size, and the makes getting into the pack a bit cumbersome. Kelty does offer a few useful video tutorials online that we made use of immediately after unboxing the pack.

While we advocate for using sunscreen anytime you venture outside (especially during spring and summer), Kelty does include an integrated domed sunshade that can be buckled into place to provide shade for your child or tucked out of the way into a zip pocket. This offers respite from the sun and could be a quick, temporary cover if it starts to rain.

The open and close mechanism is simple but still requires another set of adult hands to fully set up — you can also set the pack down to do this, as well. There are plenty of handle straps that make taking the pack on and off easy enough by yourself and the stand can be extended with one arm and collapsed again for added trail mobility.

Over a multi-hour trek, kids can get bored and uncomfortable quickly. Dealing with a struggling, upset child when you’re still miles from the trailhead can be a moral dealbreaker. The padding in the child carrier was more than sufficient to keep a 16-month old comfortable despite being fully strapped in, which was a big win, in our mind. This allowed her to continuously enjoy the surroundings while still being able to talk to her dad, rather than complaining and asking to get out of the carrier.

Most backpack child carriers that get into the long day-hike category range between $200 and $350, and while the Journey PerfectFIT Elite is priced somewhat highly at $300, it has many of the features you’d expect from a first-class backpacking pack, let alone a daypack. Kelty and other brands offer similar models with fewer features for less, but you’re ultimately investing in your own happiness on the trail and that is worth every penny.

If you’re not an avid hiker and just looking for a baby backpack, there are cheaper options that may serve you better but the PerfectFIT Elite is Kelty at the top of its game.

The constant push for better, more comfortable, and supportive child carriers for the adventurer has driven a handful of companies to continually expand, upgrade, and innovate this niche market. Kelty being one of those companies that have been offering child carriers for a very long time.

When my kids were small and we were always off exploring parts unknown, the child carriers of that day were painful contraptions of torture for both the carrier and the carried. What I like in this pack:

What I'd change if I could:

• Narrow the seat area for the child...great for older ones, but splays the legs out too far and they start to whine after a while
• A less cumbersome child harness strap system. Front straps drape beneath the child, so you have to dig a bit to locate them.
• Ambidextrous option on hipbelt pocket waterbottle holder.
• Utilize mesh suspension and foam cutouts for backpanel, shoulder straps and hipbelt...carrier would benefit from greater airflow.

I've used this Kelty JourneyFit Signature Elite child carrier exclusively with two of my grandchildren on numerous occasions, from outdoor excursions, to neighborhood strolls to shopping mall experiences for hours on end.

Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Signature Child Carrier Summary

The Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Signature Child Carrier is a high quality child carrier backpack that is made to last.  It is one of three models offered by Kelty and is most similar to the Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Elite , but lacks some features.  The most economic option offered by Kelty is the Journey PerfectFIT .

The Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Signature model generally sells for $30-$40 less than the Elite model, with fewer storage options such as mesh pockets, hydration bladder storage, and has fewer zippered storage pockets.  Despite having less storage options, the Signature model still has the ability to carry 26 L worth of toys, snacks, and gear.

The PerfectFIT Signature is a comfortable pack for the wearer and is similar to the PerfectFIT Elite in that is utilizes the same materials, load lifting mechanism and unique suspension system.

As with most of Kelty’s backpacks, this child carrier backpack is very comfortable to wear even when fully loaded with a child and gear. Soft, padded mesh on the hipbelt, shoulder straps, and back lumbar make this a comfortable pack to wear for extended hikes.

The Kelty child carrier backpack load lifters are located just above the shoulders and are easily adjustable while wearing the pack. Load lifters are essential on any heavy pack and if they work well, help distribute the pack weight from your shoulders to your hips and lower body. Good quality load lifters can make a good hike a great one by making it much more comfortable. 

The Kelty PerfectFIT suspension system utilized on the Signature and Elite models is unique to Kelty.  While wearing the pack, there are two straps that hang down by your waist.  As you pull down on both straps simultaneously, the torso section is adjusted.  The shoulder straps begin to move down and allows for on the fly adjustments.  This feature works best when the backpack is being transferred from a taller person to a shorter person.   This is a particularly useful feature to help ensure that the pack can be finely tuned to fit nearly any body type.

Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Signature Fit Adjustability: 7/10

The PerfectFIT suspension system mentioned above is the primary adjustment option on the Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Signature.  With this adjustment feature, the pack can fit a torso ranging from 15.5 inches to 21 inches, which should fit most body types.

Additional adjustments built into this pack are high quality clasps and buckles for seamlessly adjusting the waist and shoulders.   If you have ever tried to adjust a pack with lower quality materials, you know that it can be a struggle to adjust. The main adjustment option missing from Kelty’s design is a hipbelt extender to accommodate larger waistlines.  The Thule Sapling Elite and Osprey Poco Plus both include well padded hipbelt extensions.  If your needs include accommodating people with varying body types, you may consider the Thule or Osprey options.

Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Signature Child Comfort: 9/10

The Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Signature provides a comfortable ride for your little passenger! This pack includes soft materials, an extra wide seat, removable drool pad and foot stirrups that help keep the passenger a happy little camper.

The child cockpit utilizes a soft, felt-like padding surrounding the child seating area.    The seat is extra wide with extra comfortable flaps for the legs and made of the same soft material. A comfortable seat allows for a longer day on the trail and a happy little hiking companion!

A removable drool pad may not be at the top of your must have list but, once you have given a child a snack on the trail you will realize that it is a necessity. The removable drool pad included on the Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Signature is a good design that is easy to keep clean.

Adjustable foot stirrups may be an after thought when considering a baby backpack carrier for your baby. As your little hiking companion grows, foot stirrups become a necessity for them to be fully supported in the pack and prevent them from continually kicking the person wearing the pack.

Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Signature Child Safety:10/10

Kelty receives Kid Packer’s top rating when it comes to child safety for the Journey Perfectfit Signature and their other two models:  Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Elite and the Kelty Journey PerfectFIT . Kelty receives top marks for their lightweight yet sturdy frame, five point harness and child waist belt. 

The Kelty design starts with a lightweight aluminum frame that is both sturdy and rigid and is a great base to build off of.

Kelty goes above and beyond other child carrier brands with their child cockpit design. The child is not only strapped in with a five point harness but an additional waist belt that really locks them in place which provides a more secure ride for the passenger and a more stable hike for the pack wear

Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Signature Sun Protection: 7/10

A built in sunshade is included with the Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Signature.  A sunshade is a must for any child carrier backpack, and thankfully Kelty includes one built in on this model.

To access the sunshade, you unzip the top rear zipper and simply pull the sunshade up.  Once fully extended, you pull the flexible shade forward and clip it securely to the front of the pack.  With the shade locked in place, your child still has plenty of head room and great visibility.

The shade provides adequate coverage when the sun is high in the sky.  But in the afternoon or early morning, the shade lacks side panels and the child is left exposed.

Overall, the sunshade is adequate, but could use a few improvements.

Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Signature Nap Effectiveness: 8/10

The child cockpit has a good design where the soft, padded drool pad wraps around the front of the pack.  This provides the child with a nice place to rest their head when they are ready for a nap.  When the child is younger, this is likely how they will nap, leaning forward.

As the child gets bigger, napping leaning forward can be a bit more challenging because there just is not enough space in a child backpack carrier.  This is not unique to Kelty, but common among most child carrier backpakcs.

However, one area for nap improvement for this pack is the sunshade.  As mentioned above, the sunshade lacks side panels.  On packs that have side panels on the sunshade ( Osprey Poco Plus and Osprey Poco ), children can use the side panels as a hammock for their head, and lean to the side when they nap.   Without a good place to put their head, they can sometimes have a hard time falling asleep, and tend to not nap quite as long.  Not good!

Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Signature Gear Storage: 7/10

With 26 L of gear storage included on the Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Signature there is room for everything you need for a full day hike or a day exploring a travel destination. 

The PerfectFIT Signature model comes with two rear zippered storage compartments.  One large top compartment and one smaller lower zippered compartment.  The upper zipper compartment has interior mesh pockets to help keep things organized.  The upper zipper pocket is a great place for quick access items like sunscreen, wipes, toys, etc.

The lower zippered pocket is covered by a flap and can also hold plenty of gear like extra layers and a packed lunch.  

The hipbelt on this model includes two zippered hipbelt pockets with one being expandable to hold a full sized water bottle!  The expandable water bottle holder is a neat feature but, does get in the way of your stride. The zippered hipbelt pockets are great for small quick access items like chapstick, keys or a phone.

The biggest difference between the Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Elite and the PerfectFIT Signature is storage.  What storage is missing?  The Signature model does not include a place for a hydration bladder or mesh upper pockets on both sides.  The PerfectFIT Elite models offers both of these.  With no mesh stuff pockets on the sides of the pack, the Signature model really doesn’t have a great place to store a full-sized Nalgene style water bottle.  In our opinion, this is a pretty big drawback.

Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Signature Extra Features: 6/10

This child carrier backpack does not include a lot of frills or extras.  This pack has what you need for a full day of hiking but, doesn’t come with all the bells and whistles that its big brother, the Journey PerfectFIT Elite has.

The most useful extra feature on this pack are the extra grab handles on the sides of the child carrier.  Most child carrier backpacks only have grab handles on the top of the pack to assist with putting the pack on and tacking it off.  Kelty has thoughtfully added extra grab handles on the sides, which are a nice touch.

The lack of an optional rain cover really limits the functionality of this child carrier. We would love to see Kelty offer a rain cover to purchase separately with their packs.  A rain cover, or lack thereof, can make or break an excursion if the weather goes south. Rain covers provide protection not only from rain but, cold and windy conditions as well.   

Both Osprey and Thule offer rain covers for their packs.

Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Signature Durability: 9/10

Anyone familiar with outdoor gear knows that Kelty is a highly respected brand known for making top notch gear that lasts, and that is no different with the Journey PerfectFIT Signature.  As soon as you pick up this pack, you know if was built to last, and if you take care of it, will have good resale value.

The pack is constructed using highly durable materials such as 75D Poly and 140D Nylon blend.

Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Signature Value: 8/10

The Journey PerfectFIT Signature typically sells for $30-$40 less than the Elite model, and lacks a few key storage options that, in our opinion, provides an overall lower value proposition than the Elite model.

With a total score of 79/100, the Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Signature is a solid child carrier backpack.  Whether you are heading around town or hitting the trail for an entire day, the Signature has everything you need.  With 26L of storage and top ratings in child safety, you can rest easy knowing you and your little passenger will have a great experience!

Alright, this post is for my outdoorsy mommas, or the mommas who simply want to carry their child on their back comfortably.

We all know how straining it can be to carry our babies on our hips. Let’s be honest it’s a workout all on its own, so when it comes to hiking or even navigating through a big crowd at the summer fair, carrying your child on your back, hands free is obviously a much better option.

But that leads us to another question, which carrier is going to be the most comfortable for me and my baby? And which carrier will lend the most support to my back and shoulders without weighing me down? Well mommas, the answer is the Kelty Journey PerfectFit child carrier, more specifically, the Signature series.

This backpack has all the options for any momma, including the avid hiker. With tons of features designed for maximum comfort for both mom and baby, this backpack is a must-have for any outdoorsy family. Which Backpack Is Right For You?

Before I get into it, how do you know if the Kelty Journey PerfectFit child carrier really is the best option for you? In order to help you decide, I’ll walk you through the buying process that Darin and I went through when looking to purchase our backpack.

Darin and I have always been an active couple and we wanted to share that with our kids, so when we had our daughter we knew that in order to bring her along on our hikes we would need a backpack with great support. We did a lot of research and looked into countless hiking backpacks, but ultimately decided upon the Kelty Journey Signature Series.

Compared to all other brands and similar models, the Signature Series had the most to offer for the price. When compared to similar models in other brands such as the Thule Sapling , and the Osprey Poco AG Plus , the Kelty Journey PerfectFit child carrier, was overall better. Unlike the other brands, the Kelty backpack was more sturdy, lightweight, easier to adjust and was the only backpack with a sun canopy.

For these reasons, it’s clear to see why we chose to go with the Kelty brand. Once we narrowed it down to the brand, we were then faced with the hard decision of which model to go with. There were three models that stood out to us:

• The Kelty Journey PerfectFit Signature Series $259.95
• The Kelty Journey PerfectFit Elite $299.95

We went with the Kelty Journey PerfectFit Signature carrier for a couple of reasons. We are an active couple, but we don’t consider ourselves to be avid hikers, so we knew we didn’t need the top model which eliminated the Kelty Journey PerfectFit Elite. However, we are active enough and lived in Las Vegas at the time so we knew we definitely needed the canopy feature, which eliminated the Kelty Journey PerfectFit base model.

So, we landed on the Kelty Journey PerfectFit Signature, and we couldn’t be happier. It’s the best bang for your buck, and let’s face it, these child carriers are expensive, so you want to get your money’s worth and know that you are getting the best deal.

The Kelty Journey PerfectFit Signature Series Overview

The Kelty Journey Signature backpack is the mid-level package, compared to the Kelty Journey PerfectFit (base level) and the Kelty Journey PerfectFit Elite (top-level). It is the perfect child carrier backpack designed for a day at the park or a day on the mountain trails. Its ingenious design makes hiking comfortable and easy.

Overall, we love our Kelty Journey PerfectFit child carrier and there are many positives that are worth noting.

Lightweight – This carrier is lightweight and extremely supportive, the mesh straps and hip belt really make the difference. As with any hiking backpack, you will most likely feel more pressure on your shoulders at first, so it is worth noting, that you should start off with a shorter hike to get used to hauling your baby around. But other than that, I feel that the Kelty brand gives the best support in comparison to any other brand.

Easy Storage – Something we absolutely love about our Kelty child carrier, is the storage and the easy access hip belt pockets! When we hike we are able to bring everything we need, and the hip belt pockets make for easy access to your cell phone or chap stick.

Drool Pad – The machine washable drool pad is a nice feature because we all know how much our babies can drool and slobber. And in our case, this drool pad made for a nice pillow on a hike we recently took with Hayvn. It’s so cushioned and padded that she leaned forward and actually fell asleep and napped during the entire hike! Now that’s not what it’s intended for, but I thought it was funny and worth mentioning.

Sun Canopy – Obviously, this was a major part of our decision-making process when we looked into buying a child carrier. We love the sun canopy and living in Vegas, you definitely need one of these if you’re taking your baby outside. It works amazing and gives me a little more peace of mind knowing my baby has even more protection against the sun and heat.

No Hydration Feature – As with any product that you purchase they can’t all be perfect all the time, however, our Kelty backpack is a pretty perfect fit for us. If I had to make one criticism, I would say I wish our backpack had the hydration feature that the Elite model has, but we purchased our child carrier knowing that it lacked this feature, and we made this decision based on price.

We knew that we didn’t hike nearly enough to justify spending more money on the Elite model, and therefore we forewent the hydration feature.

Overall, I would give the Kelty Journey PerfectFit a 9 out of 10 rating simply because I would love to have the hydration feature while hiking. But seeing as Darin and I already have a hydration backpack and we aren’t avid hikers, this child carrier is perfect for our family.

This would have been so nice to have for when my kids were younger! Oftentimes my wife would bring the stroller to parks or the splash pad and she would have to haul that stroller, with child in tow, and follow the other one on the playground. It got pretty challenging when it was just her. Having the Kelty Child Carrier may have made it more comfortable for her instead of moving the stroller everywhere. But that’s just for the playground!

Hiking-wise, I can see the huge advantage that would bring. The side pockets would be perfect for snacks, a spare diaper, a couple of wipes or other small things all wile enjoying nature:) I’ve seen a ton of parents with these already, especially for those who are more into hiking and backpacking.

This seems like an awesome carrier for people who are active. I like the fact that it adjusts well to fit either a male or female. I have found that some are not as user-friendly when it comes to being able to expand enough.

The user interface is sleek, streamlined,  and fun to play around in.

If you want to explore your other options, you can quickly navigate from the ‘Just for You’ tab and view all the JRNY program offerings, Explore the World classes, as well as save your favorite workouts.

Each workout can also be filtered by length and difficulty using the slide bar, and you can find classes taught by your favorite instructor.
