Hong Kong To Debut 12-Minute Musical New Year Countdown Fireworks Show
The Hong Kong Tourism Board announced that this year’s New Year’s fireworks show will be 12 minutes long , and launched from five barges positioned across a 1.3 km stretch between Central and Causeway Bay — making it the “the biggest and longest New Year countdown firework display the city has ever seen”.
The countdown will revolve around the theme ‘New Year New Legend’ , and will take spectators on a journey through the four seasons of winter, spring, summer, and autumn. Onlookers will get an audiovisual display that will include silver winter snowflakes and colourful summer imagery.
In the run-up to the fireworks display, a large countdown clock will appear on the façade of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai. When the clock strikes midnight, audiences will hear a new musical arrangement combining various genres of music — including electronic, Western classical and Chinese instrumental — that will play during the show.
There will also be special displays — called ‘pre-show wish-making sessions’ — every 15 minutes from 11pm onwards. Pyrotechnics will shoot out from the rooftops of three prominent harbourfront high-rises on Hong Kong Island, illuminating the sky in four different colours.
The city’s tourism board also premiered a new 10-minute-long fireworks display as part of its Hong Kong WinterFest celebrations. The show — which takes place every weekend in December as well as during the Christmas holidays — features the HK monogram that was a part of the Harbour Chill Carnival fireworks display in the summer, as well as Christmas trees and present boxes icons created especially for this year’s Yuletide festivities.
Hong Kong’s iconic fireworks displays, which have been cancelled every year since 2019, made comebacks over the past few months, starting with the 23-minute National Day show that took place on October 1. The annual Lunar New Year fireworks display will also return on February 11 for next year’s Chinese New Year festivities.
Hong Kong Disneyland will also stage its first New Year’s Eve countdown party on December 31 in front of the Castle of Magical Dreams. The park will host a special live performance with Disney friends and a ‘Momentous’ Nighttime Spectacular experience to welcome 2024.

I believe that this dazzling audiovisual extravaganza in Victoria Harbour on New Year's Eve will boost the lively, vibrant night-time ambience across the city while showcasing Hong Kong's unique appeal to the rest of the world."
Largest-ever firework spectacle created by a world-renowned team
On New Year's Eve, when the countdown clock strikes midnight on the wall of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Victoria Harbour will be transformed into a grand for the "New Year, New Legend" fireworks extravaganza. The fireworks will span from Central to North Point, covering a distance of 1,300 metres and lasting for 12 minutes. The fireworks choreography was designed by Liu Lin, Fireworks Project's Chief and Director of Fireworks Operation of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The performance was inspired by the changing of seasons, leading the audience on a journey from winter through spring, summer and autumn, then greet winter again as the seasons repeat in a circle of life. Liu said, "The countdown firework performance demonstrates the optimism and diligence of the people of Hong Kong, who inspire boundless vitality and innovation, and have given birth to one legend after another."
To provide a better three-dimensional effect, five barges with 16 floats will be deployed in two layers to launch the fireworks from different angles and heights. This will fill the night sky and the harbour with a glamourous, spectacular, sensational feast. The sonata accompanying the fireworks is a new arrangement by renowned musician Chiu Tsang-hei, combining various elements of electronic, classical and Chinese instrumental music. In the middle section, internationally renowned violinist Yao Jue will perform a new arrangement of a classical piece, perfectly demonstrating the glamour of Hong Kong's East-meets-West cultural fusion.
The firework performance has five sections: a prelude, three scenes and the finale (the conceptual photos are for reference only):
Make a wish under the brilliant rooftop pyrotechnics
Starting from 11pm, rooftop pyrotechnics will be set off every 15 minutes at three iconic landmarks on Hong Kong Island: Harbour Centre, Harcourt House and Cheung Kong Center. In addition to the well-known vantage points along the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, the Central harbourfront and Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai, the opening of new seaside facilities means the public can enjoy this year's countdown from additional locations. These include the waterfront promenade in West Kowloon Cultural District, the Wan Chai Harbour Chill waterfront promenade, and extending to the East Coast Park Precinct in North Point. Sound systems will also be set up at each vantage point to allow the audience to fully enjoy the firework music. Additionally, Radio 2 of Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) will simultaneously broadcast the show's soundtrack, enabling the public and visitors to enjoy this audio-visual celebration feast at various locations along the harbour.
The "Hong Kong New Year Countdown Celebrations" will be fully broadcast live on various platforms, including the HKTB's official website (discoverhongkong.com), social media platforms (the HKTB's Facebook page and YouTube channel), and ViuTV 99 and its website and mobile app. The HKTB will also broadcast the celebrations in other countries and areas through satellite broadcast to share Hong Kong's festivities with audiences around the world.
To facilitate the smooth staging of the event, traffic control measures and road closures will be implemented in phases in Central, Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai on New Year's Eve. For sea traffic, sailings will be suspended in central Victoria Harbour and services at Kowloon Public Pier will also be suspended. Members of the public are advised to refer to the announcements by the relevant government departments.

Latest New Year Countdown news from the HK Tourism Board .
New Year's Eve Fireworks in Hong Kong
The Fireworks will be held at midnight December 31, 2023 and will be the longest ever New Year's Eve fireworks display so far. We will be treated to a whole 12 minutes of a synchronised "pyromusical" including fireworks, pyrotechnics, music and lights, all beautifully choreographed.
The Countdown starts 60 seconds before midnight, with the focal point of the countdown reflected on the facade of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre
The fireworks will be launched from the barges set up in the harbour, lighting effects and fireworks shoot out of rooftops of buildings and landmarks on both sides with many exploding high in the sky above Victoria Harbour. The numerals "2024" and New Year blessings will of course be displayed on the facade of the Convention Center.
"Shooting Stars" and bursts of shimmering lights will be launched from rooftops of skyscrapers around the harbour every 15 minutes as we get closer to the countdown.
You can practically watch the fireworks from just about anywhere in Hong Kong but you need to stake out your viewing place waaaay before midnight as most public places will be packed, and remember, road closures start as early as 6:30 pm.
When?: December 31, 2023 - Countdown starts 60 seconds before midnight. Where?: Anywhere within view of the harbour. How much?: Free! at all public viewing areas.
What if you can't be here? The HKTB will be live streaming the countdown on its Facebook page and DiscoverHongKong YouTube Channel so be sure to tune in!
Where are the best spots to watch?
Which side of the harbour? As a general rule, you should watch from whatever side you are staying and plan on walking. Trying to catch a taxi or the packed MTR on the way home when every one else is also trying to do the same is quite challenging to say the least.
Also consider whether you want to have the focal point of the countdown in view or just want to enjoy the fireworks. The focal point is normally at the Convention Center, so best view if you want to watch that is from the Kowloon side .
One of our favourite spots to watch from Kowloon in Tsim Sha Tsui, you can watch all along the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade from the Star Ferry Terminal to the New World Centre in the East.
Another popular vantage point for fireworks is the Hung Hom Bypass which is closed to traffic between Salisbury Road and Hung Hom Road, and the Hung Hom Promenade.
If staying in the Hong Kong Island side, consider the area around the Convention Centre and Bauhinia Square or anywhere along the Central Waterfront Promenade that extends from the Central Star Ferry Pier to Tamar Park and has elevated walkways for great views.
Here are more free vantage points, map and tips for enjoying the fireworks !
New Year's Eve Fireworks Cruises
Watching the fireworks from a Harbour Cruise in the middle of Victoria Harbour as the entire sky lits up and splashes of colour and light explode all around you is truly a once-in-a-lifetime enthralling experience. There simply are no words to describe it.
Another plus besides the front-row fifty-yard-line awesome views is the fact that you avoid the crowds and, this is a big one, there will be free-flowing drinks AND toilets available...
New Year's Eve fireworks cruises are extremely popular, so needless to say, you need to book as soon as you firm up your plans as they sell out quite quickly!

Hong Kong Tells Residents to ‘Smile More’ as Government Tries to Revive Declining Tourism
H ong Kong, the Chinese enclave that’s still struggling to revive its tourism economy post-pandemic and in the wake of a Beijing-influenced crackdown on civil liberties, has taken a new approach to wooing visitors: curbing its residents’ reputation for rudeness .
Earlier this week, the city government launched a new campaign to promote politeness. A “handful of black sheep,” culture, sports, and tourism secretary Kevin Yeung said, have made headlines for behavior that “tarnishes our image.” Unfriendly service staff at restaurants, once viewed as a charming hallmark of visiting Hong Kong, has increasingly been described as a turn-off for tourists, while rudeness topped the list of complaints about the city’s taxi industry in a survey last year.
Yeung announced on Monday a multi-department effort to reverse this reputation: the Education Bureau will promote programs to teach courtesy to students, while the Home Affairs Department will organize community activities to encourage friendliness, with potential reward schemes for “good performance.” Yeung also announced that authorities will share a series of video clips urging residents to “go the extra mile” to promote the city’s hospitality and to volunteer at visitor centers.
Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee backed the campaign during his regular press conference on Tuesday: “I ask you all to take part, to enhance visitors’ experience,” he said through an interpreter. “We should be more courteous, we should be more helpful, we should smile more, we should take the extra mile to promote Hong Kong’s hospitality so that Hong Kong will become a well-known place where visitors are welcome.”
It’s not the first time Hong Kong has tried to solve its perceived attitude problem—similar politeness campaigns were launched in the ’90s and early 2000s. But the city has struggled to see its pre-pandemic level of visitors return, even after the strict measures against inbound travel that were taken in effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19 were lifted and despite a slew of efforts—including hosting more than 200 “ mega events ,” from conferences to concerts to sports games —aimed at reestablishing itself as an international destination.
Data since 2002 from the Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department and Tourism Board show that the city saw a peak of over 6.7 million visitor arrivals in January 2019. In April 2024, it saw less than half as many.
But it’s not just COVID that has kept people away. The decline in visitor numbers has coincided with Hong Kong’s shifting political landscape, with arrivals beginning to dip after major pro-democracy protests in 2019 and the subsequent quelling of dissent and of any anti-China sentiment in the city. ( Some say simmering political tensions, along with other social and economic factors, is partly to blame for the brusqueness of Hong Kongers today.)
The profile of Hong Kong’s recent post-pandemic tourism has also largely changed from what it used to look like. In 2010, according to government statistics , 10% of visitors were from Europe and the Americas, while 63% were from mainland China. In 2023, 5% hailed from Europe and the Americas, while 79% came from mainland China. It doesn’t help that countries like the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. have issued travel warnings cautioning their citizens about “arbitrary” and “broad” enforcement of local laws. (Those from China now are also more cost-conscious than the predominantly rich Chinese tourists of the past.)
Yeung, the city’s tourism secretary, for his part, seems to be aware of the immense task before him: “The hospitality movement cannot solve all of society’s problems,” he said, “but the spirit is what counts.”
