The Glacier Express, one of Switzerland's premium panoramic trains

Grand Train Tour of Switzerland (Itinerary, Info and Map)

The Grand Train Tour of Switzerland offers visitors to this incredibly beautiful country a unique way to see all the highlights.

Although it’s called a Switzerland train tour, the Grand Tour is actually a self-guided trip that combines Switzerland’s most scenic train rides with all the key sights.

The Swiss Grand Train Tour comprises eight different legs, covering 1,280 kilometres, and visitors can choose to take as few or many of these trips as they like to create a bespoke itinerary reflecting their interests.

In this way, individual train tours in Switzerland can be designed just as the visitor pleases.

Whilst all eight sections can be completed in eight days, if time permits, we recommend you take a little longer to complete the route.

This is because taking the tour in eight days means travelling every day, leaving you short of time for seeing the sights and enjoying some time in each destination.

Ideally, a 14 day Grand Train Tour of Switzerland is recommended for those who want to get the very best out of their trip through Switzerland.

[ This post may contain compensated links. Please see my  disclosure policy  for more information. ]

Grand Train Tour of Switzerland map

The entire Grand Train Tour of Switzerland visits ten destinations, passes by eleven lakes, and incorporates journeys on all five premium panoramic trains.

Travellers wishing to enjoy the once-in-a-lifetime experience that is the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland can either make all their own rail and hotel arrangements, or they can book one of the Switzerland train tour packages that are based on the Grand Tour route.

We’ll cover both options in more detail below.

What's in this Article

Booking a Switzerland train tour package

The easiest way to plan your Grand Tour of Switzerland by train is to book a pre-designed Grand Train Tour package . There are a number of different packages available, ranging from 3 days / 2 nights up to 9 days / 8 nights.

These self-guided tours of Switzerland include all rail travel on your chosen route as well as accommodation.

Travellers have the flexibility to amend the pre-designed itineraries to suit their own requirements.  Additional days can be added and excursions can be included at each destination.

Travellers can also choose the standard of accommodation and room type they prefer and choose between first class and second class train travel.

One of the most popular Switzerland train tours is the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland – the Original.  This 8 day / 7 night itinerary includes rides on five of the most scenic trains Switzerland has to offer, making it the ideal way to tour Switzerland by train.

Seat reservations on the premium panoramic train rides in Switzerland are also included.

The ‘Original’ Grand Train Tour of Switzerland package can be easily extended if you have additional time and would like to spend more time in each destination.

To make your Switzerland trip even easier, the tour can also be booked with luggage transport.

Simply leave your luggage in the hotel reception at the designated time each morning and it will be waiting for you at your destination hotel later the same day.

Planning a DIY Switzerland Grand Train Tour

If you love the research side of planning your trips, and have the time to book each of the components of your Switzerland train itinerary separately, we recommend you consider buying a Swiss Travel Pass .

This all-in-one public transport ticket covers all of Switzerland by train, bus, boat and tram. With the Swiss Travel Pass there’s no need to purchase individual train tickets in Switzerland for each leg of the journey, as the pass allows you to hop on and off each train in Switzerland as you wish.

The Swiss Travel Pass incorporates all of the premium panoramic trains that run throughout the country, including the Luzern-Interlaken Express, Glacier Express, GoldenPass Line, Bernina Express and Gotthard Panorama Express.  > Click here to buy your Swiss Travel Pass

(*Note: seat reservations – which are an additional cost – are compulsory for the Glacier Express, Bernina Express and GoldenPass Express Prestige Class, and are recommended for all premium panoramic trains.)

Zermatt – Chur – St. Moritz

Glacier Express premium panoramic train passing by an Alpine lake

Premium Panoramic Trains used: Glacier Express

Distance/Journey time: 291km / 7h:45

Train rides in Switzerland don’t come much more iconic – or scenic – than the Glacier Express . This is surely the most dramatic of all train journeys in Switzerland, not least because it’s the longest sector.

En route, travellers can marvel at typically Swiss panoramas including deep ravines, pretty villages, vast forests, 91 tunnels, 291 bridges, and the breathtaking Landwasser Viaduct.

The slowest express train in the world – as it is often known – also crosses the Oberalp Pass.

What to do in St. Moritz

St. Moritz is an elegant ski resort where visitors can take to the slopes in winter or hike in summer.  Trips and activities on the lake are also popular.

It’s also a great place to take in the fresh mountain air while admiring sweeping views over the Swiss landscape. St Moritz also has a leaning tower that’s well worth a visit.

The Morteratsch Glacier is also a highlight.

What to do in Lugano

Lugano is a pretty Italian-influenced resort with an interesting Old Town and an enviable lakeside position. With something of a Mediterranean air, Lugano has a lovely palm-lined promenade.

Visitors can take a lake cruise, or sample some Italian-style Swiss dishes at the town’s fine selection of cafes and restaurants. Mountain excursions to Monte Brè or Monte San Salvatore are also popular.

At  Flüelen, travellers board a modern motor boat or historic paddle steamer to glide across the waters of Lake Lucerne before reaching the city of Lucerne.

What to do in Lucerne

Lucerne is a city very much at the heart of Swiss history, so there’s lots to see and do in Lucerne . Many visitors like to take a boat cruise across Lake Lucerne.

As well as exploring the town on the shores of the lake, travellers can see Chapel Bridge or take a mountain excursion to Rigi, Titlis, Pilatus or Stanserhorn.

Lucerne – St. Gallen

Voralpen Express train in Switzerland

The Voralpen Express (Pre-Alps Express) takes travellers past some of the mightiest mountains of the Swiss Alps – including the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau.

This panorama train in Switzerland begins at Lake Lucerne, passing gentle rolling green hills as well as majestic peaks en route.

It also passes Rapperswil and the Rothenthurmer upland moors, before crossing Lake Zurich and the 99-metre high Sitter Viaduct before arriving in St. Gallen.

What to do in St. Gallen

The UNESCO World Heritage sites of the Abbey Library and District are a particular highlight of St. Gallen. Situated between Lake Constance and the Appenzeller region , St Gallen is a compact town that’s easy to explore on foot.

The biggest draws include the open-air, art nouveau pool, the baroque cathedral and the library’s Rococo Hall.

St. Gallen – Schaffhausen – Zurich

A red Swiss train crossing a bridge

Distance/Journey time: 133km / 2h:30

Your train journey through Switzerland will reveal an interesting truth – the fact that this landlocked European nation has a real maritime heritage. Lake Constance in particular has played a leading role.

The journey between St. Gallen and Zurich travels along the lake’s shore for 40 kilometres. After that, it traces the route of the Rhine past Schaffhausen, home of the Rhine Falls and Munot Fortress. The falls are the largest in Europe.

Should time allow, a side trip to the pretty medieval town of Stein am Rhein is highly recommended.

What to do in Zurich

Zurich is the financial and industrial hub of Switzerland, and as such is sometimes overlooked by visitors. However, it also boasts a fascinating Old Town – the Altstadt – that dates back to pre-medieval times.

The Old Town is bisected by the Limmat River, and this has waterside promenades. The Rathaus dates back to the 1600s, and a stroll along Bahnhofstrasse – one of Europe’s most expensive shopping strips – is a must.

The city is built beside Lake Zurich which is popular for boat cruises and water sports.

Zürich – Luzern – Interlaken

From lake to lake, from city to city.

On the ride from the urban centre of Switzerland to Lucerne, a gentler mountain- and hillscape dominates the scenery, with sparkling lakes in between. The train follows the shorelines of Lakes Zug and Rotsee towards Central Switzerland. At Lucerne, guest change to the Luzern–Interlaken-Express. The ride on this Premium panoramic train connects two world-famous destinations. Time flies faster than one would wish – due to mountain scenery, turquoise lakes and numerous waterfalls.

Highlights:

  • Zürich: Switzerland’s metropolis
  • Train line: Luzern–Interlaken Express
  • Interlaken: Mountains, lakes & adventure; mountain excursions to Brienzer Rothorn , Jungfraujoch , Schilthorn , Harder Kulm , Schynige Platte

Interlaken – Zweisimmen – Montreux

A panoramic ride between two worlds.

The journey starts in Interlaken onboard the GoldenPass Express, whose travel class “Prestige” sets new standards. The global novelty first takes guests along Lake Thun and then through the Simmen Valley to Zweisimmen. Guests can remain in their comfortable seats as the train prepares for the second stretch of the journey that runs on narrower tracks. The transformation only takes a few seconds but is nothing short of a magic trick. The Premium panoramic train continues from Zweisimmen in the Bernese Oberland towards Montreux, the fashionable city at the shores of Lake Geneva. It runs past magnificent castles as well as peacefully grazing cattle and finally passes the German-French language border. On the last leg, it winds down through the hills – and with the arrival at Montreux visitors become engrossed in the Mediterranean flair of the region.

  • Train line: GoldenPass Express / Belle Epoque
  • Montreux: Vineyards of Lavaux, Chillon Castle, Chaplin’s World, mountain excursion to Rochers-de-Naye

Montreux – Visp – Zermatt

Up the valley to the “mountain of mountains”.

Through the fertile Rhone Valley, it is only a stone’s throw from fashionable Montreux to Visp. From here, the journey continues on the narrow-gauge railway network of the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway through the Nikolai Valley, the deepest-incised valley of Switzerland, to Zermatt. Before the “mountain of mountains” – the Matterhorn – comes into view, the train has to overcome more than 900 metres in altitude, partly with the help of cogwheel technology.

  • Train line: Ride with Matterhorn Gotthard Railways through the Nikolai valley
  • Zermatt: world famous car-free village with a view to Matterhorn, mountain excursions to Gornergrat and Matterhorn glacier paradise

Zermatt – Chur – St. Moritz

The slowest express train in the world.

The luxurious paragon of panoramic trains travels across the Alps and connects fashionable Zermatt at the foot of the Matterhorn with the equally sophisticated St. Moritz. On its eight-hour ride through the mountainous Cantons of Valais, Uri and Grisons, it dives through 91 tunnels and balances over 291 bridges. From the comfort of the coach, ceiling-high panoramic windows offer unobstructed views of an imposing mountainscape, tradition-rich health resorts, deep ravines and picturesque valleys – scenic splendour at its finest.

  • Train line: Glacier Express
  • St. Moritz: chic destination on 1.822 m a.s.l., surrounded by mountains and lakes, mountain excursions to Diavolezza and Muottas Muragl

St. Moritz – Tirano – Lugano

From glaciers to palm trees.

The Bernina Express inspires a sense of delight and bridges language regions as well as cultures. One highlight follows hot on the heels of the next: the sparkling Morteratsch glacier and, at 2,253 metres altitude, the Lago Bianco. Embedded in the Alpine landscape, the vibrant turquoise of the lake stands out beautifully. From the UNESCO World Heritage route of Rhaetian Railways, the train winds its way over the Bernina Pass and down through the scenic Val Poschiavo towards Tirano in Italy.

The journey continues on the Bernina Express Bus through the Valtellina Valley via Lake Como to Lugano. In winter, the journey leads alternatively from St. Moritz on the Palm Express over the spectacular, serpentine road of the Maloja Pass down the Val Bregaglia and finally – also along Lake Como – to Lugano.

  • Train and bus line: Bernina Express
  • Lugano: mediterranean town at the lake, mountain excursions to Monte San Salvatore and Monte Brè

Lugano – Flüelen – Luzern

The panoramic journey by train and boat.

The Gotthard Panorama Express presents Switzerland from its most diverse side: The 1st class panoramic train takes guests from the Mediterranean-style Ticino along the world-famous Gotthard panorama route and through the mighty Reuss Valley of the Canton of Uri to Flüelen. During the train ride, passengers hear fascinating tales and background information about the unique Gotthard region. Flüelen is the point where travellers change from the panoramic train, with personal travel guidance, to a steam boat or a motor vessel. In a leisurely fashion, the boat then glides over Lake Lucerne through the traditional Swiss heartland surrounded by imposing mountains to Lucerne.

  • Train and boat line: Gotthard Panorama Express
  • Luzern: the town at Lake Lucerne, Chapel Bridge, mountain excursions to Pilatus , Rigi , Stanserhorn and Titlis

Luzern – St. Gallen

Over gentle hills with a view of the Alps.

Matterhorn, Titlis or Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau – these high peaks are certainly the stars of the Swiss Alps. However, the green hillscape and gentler mountain scenery that spread out before the high-Alpine mountain chain are full of charms as well. Here’s where the Voralpen-Express runs between Lucerne and St. Gallen. It starts at Lake Lucerne against the backdrop of the prominent Alpine panorama of Central Switzerland, among which are Pilatus, Bürgenstock and Rigi, to name a few. The Voralpen-Express rides along the Rothenthurmer upland moor and crosses Lake Zurich. Shortly before arriving at St. Gallen, another highlight awaits: the Sitter Viaduct, with 99 metres Switzerland’s highest railway bridge.

  • Train line: Voralpen-Express
  • St. Gallen: Abbey District and Abbey Library (UNESCO World Heritage)

St. Gallen – Schaffhausen – Zürich

The “maritime” side of Switzerland.

Despite being landlocked, Switzerland is by all means able to radiate true maritime flair. Lake Constance is a case in point: Between the Rhine and the “Swabian Sea”, the leading role during the ride from St. Gallen to Zurich is nicely divided up. From the history-steeped city of St. Gallen, the train winds through a pastoral hillscape towards the lake and then rolls along its shoreline for 40 kilometres. Afterwards, it follows the Rhine downstream to Schaffhausen, where the Munot Fortress towers as the town’s landmark. Schaffhausen is also famous for harbouring Europe’s largest waterfalls: the Rhine Falls. After crossing the imposing railway bridge of Eglisau, the train soon arrives at Zurich, financial metropolis of Switzerland.

  • Train line: ride along Lake Constance and the Rhine Falls
  • Schaffhausen: medieval town at the Rhine Falls

Alternative: Chur – Zürich

Taking the direct connection from Chur back to Zurich rewards travellers with magnificent views of the Bündner Herrschaft (dominion of the Grisons), the Churfirsten, and Lake Walensee as well as Lake Zurich.

Railjet at Lake Walensee

Alternative: Spiez – Domodossola (IT) – Locarno

An alternative leg that is worth taking: the RegioExpress Lötschberger and the Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway take travellers to fabulous views. While the Kander Viaduct and the view of the Rhone Valley amaze passengers on the Lötschberg mountain route, the Centovalli (“100 valleys”) offers stunning vistas of deep ravines and rugged mountain ranges.

Alternative: St. Moritz – Lugano (by bus)

The Palm Express is an alternative connection from the Engadin to the Ticino. In contrast to the Bernina Express Bus, this connection operates year-round. On the stretch from St. Moritz to Lugano, the famous yellow PostBus tackles the Maloja Pass and then winds its way down through the Bregaglia Valley to Italy. It’s a journey that includes glaciers as well as palm trees.

From the station, it’s a short walk to the peak and the scenery is incredible over Zurich, the lake and the Alps. Or if you’re in the Old Town and fancy a vantage point, you can walk up Lindenhof Hill for sweeping views over the city.

Airport transfers are not included. Our transfer portal offers the option to book your airport transfers for an easier arrival experience (additional charges apply). Access to this portal will be available through your Traveller Hub once your booking is confirmed.

Check in: Passengers will be arriving at various times throughout the day. If arriving prior to standard check-in time, which is generally 3pm local time, you are welcome to leave your luggage with hotel reception and explore your surroundings until check-in becomes available, as there are generally no scheduled activities on Day 1 of the itinerary. The hotel may grant early check-in, however this is strictly subject to availability and at the hotel’s discretion.

Day 2 Zurich

Wake up to a delicious Swiss breakfast, then take a stroll along the famous Bahnhofstrasse — Zurich's shopping paradise. A quick detour will lead you to the narrower cobbled streets of Zurich's Old Town and its smaller, independent artisan shops. Visit the Lindt Home of Chocolate (self-guided), and take the opportunity to use your included 24-hour Zurich Card for local transport and various discounts across the city. Be sure to not miss the picturesque waterfront promenades!

Day 3 Zurich Lucerne

After breakfast, transfer by rail to Lucerne in Central Switzerland, situated in an enviable location surrounded by a stunning lake and mountain panorama. The historic town of Lucerne attracts visitors globally with its well-preserved old town, countless shops and restaurants. A visit to Chapel Bridge, which has stood the test of time as a traditional crossing for locals, is one of many highlights that are sure to impress.

Please note that the maximum luggage allowance is 23 kg due to train compartment restrictions.

Day 4 Lucerne Flüelen Gotthard Panorama Express Lugano

This morning, the Gotthard Panorama Express takes you from the heart of Switzerland, with a journey through Lake Lucerne on a paddle steamer boat.  From Flüelen, travel by first-class panoramic train to Lugano, a picturesque lakeside town in Switzerland’s Italian-speaking Ticino region.

Use the provided guest card to take full advantage of local transport and explore nearby villages, such as the pretty village of Morcote.

Day 5 Lugano Tirano Bernina Express St. Moritz

Board the Bernina Express bus after breakfast, and enjoy a scenic drive to Italy-based Tirano where you join the Bernina Express panoramic train across the border back to Switzerland. You will travel over circular viaducts and pass through winding tunnels, with highlights including the Brusio Circular Viaduct and a photo stop at Alp Grüm.

Arrive in St. Moritz, a luxury alpine resort town in Switzerland’s Engadin valley, and spend the rest of the day at leisure. This luxury alpine resort town, a favourite for celebrities and royals, is surely one of the world’s most famous winter sports resorts. This was the first mountain village in the country to have a ski school, a tram and electric lighting. The Winter Olympics have been held here twice. It’s a renowned ski destination.

Day 6 St. Moritz

A full day awaits to explore St. Moritz, where guests from all over the world appreciate the modern Alpine lifestyle. Take advantage of your included guest card to visit the local area. We suggest the nearby mountains of Muottas Murgal or Diavolezza for incredible views that are not to be missed. Various sights including the leaning tower, a remnant of the Mauritius Church from around 1500, or the Segantini Museum, offer unique insight into the city’s fascinating history.

Day 7 St. Moritz Glacier Express Zermatt

Ride the world‐famous Glacier Express to Zermatt today, a gorgeous village near the Italian border. Be enthralled by Switzerland’s spectacular scenery, thanks to oversized, panoramic windows that make for an unforgettable experience. This car‐free resort offers guests an abundance of activities such as visits to the local mountains of Gornergrat or the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. It is also home to the highest open-air cog railway in Europe.

Day 9 Zermatt Montreux

Continue by train to Montreux, nestled between steep hills and the lakeside of Lake Geneva. The town's promenade is lined with flowers, sculptures, Mediterranean trees and grand Belle Époque buildings. Your journey continues by train on the GoldenPass Express through the wild and romantic Pays d'Enhaut, complete with scenic villages and crystal-clear lakes at every corner.

Interlaken is a laidback resort town, presided over by three mighty mountains, Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. It makes a great base from which to explore the Bernese Oberland. Unprecedented views of the Swiss Alps give an impression of what is to come during your stay.

Höheweg, the main promenade of Interlaken, is lovely for a stroll. It runs from Lake Brienz to Lake Thun, with flower gardens and parks on one side allowing for a view of the Bernese Alps. On the other side you’ll find high-end hotels, boutiques, cafes and the casino.

Grand Train Tour Of Switzerland: A Detailed Guide

grand train tour switzerland

Dreaming of exploring Switzerland by train? So am I, which is precisely why I prepared this detailed guide to the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland!

One travel pass gives you access to all the country’s trains, including those panoramic trains with massive windows that pass through surreally beautiful sceneries. The Grand Train Tour of Switzerland is a bucket-list travel experience that covers 1,280 kilometers of the country on an epic 11-day journey, and here’s everything else you need to know about it!

Table of Contents

8 Sections of the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland

The Grand Train Tour of Switzerland is divided into eight sections, according to the specific routes that are operated by panoramic trains. We’ll tell you about all the different sections and trains right here, so you can create your own personal Grand Train Tour of the Alpine country!

And if you want to check out the map before you start, I have added it below for easy reference.

Grand Train Tour of Switzerland

Zürich – Luzern – Interlaken

Zurich Panorama from Grossmunster tower

Zürich is usually the starting point for traveling through the country because it’s got the largest and busiest international airport in Switzerland. Most travelers who fly to the country arrive at this airport, so it makes perfect sense to begin your journey in this beautiful city.

The first leg of the journey takes you to three cities, and four lakes, and treats you to some fantastic scenery during the train journey. At Luzern, you board a panoramic train to Interlaken, and that ride is easily the highlight of this entire journey. The Luzern-Interlaken express train passes through beautiful mountain landscapes, featuring waterfalls, turquoise lakes, and mesmerizing scenery before it arrives at Interlaken, the beautiful town nestled between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz.

Distance: 131 kilometers

Time: 2 hours 45 minutes

Interlaken – Zweisimmen – Montreux

Interlaken

The second section of the train journey through Switzerland takes you from the beautiful town of Interlaken to Zweisimmen, where you can ride trains on the panoramic GoldenPass line to Montreux. The train passes next to castles, through pastures, and hills, for a wonderfully scenic journey full of marvelous sights.

You can choose to ride one of the two Golden Pass trains – the Panoramic or the Belle Epoque. The Panoramic train is the better option if you want to admire the scenery during the ride because it features huge windows, with windows on the roof in 1st class. The Belle Epoque train is decorated in Belle Epoque style and it feels like traveling back in time, and it’s great for travelers who want to discover a unique way to travel in Switzerland.

Distance: 120 kilometers

Time: 3 hours 45 minutes

Montreux – Visp – Zermatt

Montreux

When you’re done exploring the beautiful city on the shore of Lake Geneva, board a train to Visp. The train journey through southern Switzerland passes through several valleys, and it is incredibly scenic. Visp is one of the sunniest places in Switzerland, and after a quick exploration of the town, you can board the train to Zermatt.

The car-free village of Zermatt is a popular ski resort, but also just a magical Swiss destination overall. During the train ride, you’re treated to beautiful views of the Rhone River valley along the way, and when you can see the iconic Matterhorn, you’ll know that you’re getting pretty close to Zermatt.

The village is also popular among mountain climbers who wish to conquer this peak, and there’s even a museum in town dedicated to ascents on the Matterhorn.

Distance: 148 kilometers

Time: 2 hours 30 minutes

Zermatt – St. Moritz

The Matterhorn in Zermatt

The slowest express train in Switzerland takes you from the beautiful car-free village of Zermatt to cosmopolitan St. Moritz. You’ll ride the Glacier Express , a panoramic train that crosses over 291 bridges and passes through 91 tunnels.

The entire journey is around 8 hours long, and it’s by far the longest train journey of the entire Grand Train Tour of Switzerland. Time flies on the train if you keep your eyes peeled on the magical scenery, making the long journey easily enjoyable.

Chur is an optional stop along this route. The beautiful town is about halfway between Zermatt and St. Moritz, and it’s worth checking out if you have enough time in Switzerland.

Distance: 291 kilometers

Time: 7 hours 45 minutes

St. Moritz – Tirano – Lugano

St. Moritz

From the glacial landscapes of St. Moritz to palm trees in Lugano – the Bernina Express panoramic train takes passengers on a ride through southern Switzerland and northern Italy, in an epic 7-hour journey.

The panoramic train takes you from St. Moritz to Tirano in Italy, allowing you to discover some truly magical landscapes along the way. UNESCO World Heritage Sites, mountain passes, tall peaks, and mesmerizing lakes are just some of the highlights you’ll get to see during the journey.

At Tirano, you can board the Bernina Express Bus towards Lugano via Como. Situated on the shore of Lake Lugano, the beautiful city offers a plethora of fun and exciting things to do to its visitors, from decadent restaurants to fabulous hiking trails.

Distance: 154 kilometers

Time: 6 hours 45 minutes

Lugano – Bellinzona – Flüelen – Luzern

Lugano

The Lugano-Luzern section of the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland is the main reason why you should plan to do this tour in the summer months if you want to experience all the highlights of the journey. The Gotthard Panorama Express operates only between April and October, and it’s another panoramic train that offers stunning views during the journey.

The panoramic train will take you from Lugano to Flüelen, where you board a boat that transports you across Lake Lucerne to the city. It’s an amazing experience and without a doubt one of the highlights of the entire tour, so it’s worth it to plan your trip around it.

Treno Gottardo is an alternative for travelers who can’t make the trip between April and October. It transports passengers between Lugano and Lucerne on the Gotthard route, and the train is in operation year-round. This train is also two hours quicker than the panoramic route, but the views along the way aren’t quite as amazing.

Distance: 182 kilometers

Time: 5 hours 30 minutes

Luzern – St. Gallen

Lucerne, Chapel Bridge view

Board the Voralpen Express train from Luzern to St. Gallen to experience one of the most beautiful railway lines in Switzerland. During the two-hour train journey, you are treated to panoramic views of the surrounding alpine peaks, the Rapperswil damn and its castle, and the highest railway bridge in the country, the Sitter Viaduct.

And that’s all before you arrive at St. Gallen, the beautiful town near Lake Constance. The attractions in the town include UNESCO World Heritage Sites, an excellent museum, and breathtaking nature in the city’s immediate surroundings.

Distance: 125 kilometers

Time: 2 hours 15 minutes

St. Gallen – Schaffhausen – Zürich

St. Gallen

The final leg of this epic journey has travelers returning to Zürich from St. Gallen. The train ride offers travelers a glimpse of maritime Switzerland because the train travels next to a body of water for the majority of the ride. First, you’ll ride along the shore of Lake Constance for about 40 kilometers, and then the train follows the Rhine river downstream.

Schaffhausen is an optional stop along this route and is entirely worth it if you want to see the largest cascades in Europe. The Rhine Falls are absolutely stunning and definitely worth a quick detour on the final leg of your Switzerland tour.

Board the train back to Zürich at Schaffhausen and you can be in the financial metropolis in 30-50 minutes. Use the time you have left in Switzerland to explore the city – walk along Bahnhofstrasse, see Lake Zurich, and climb the Karlsturm tower at Grossmünster for fabulous panoramic views before it’s time to head to the airport.

Length: 133 kilometers

On the third and final day of the tour, you get to ride in 1st class on the Gotthard Panorama Express train and enjoy stunning scenic views while traveling back to Lucerne. Packages for this itinerary start at CHF 240, which includes two overnight stays with breakfast, train tickets, and seat reservations.

Winter Magic Tour

Winter Magic Switzerland

The Winter Magic Tour is the perfect train trip through Switzerland for people who want to discover the country in the winter. Rolling hills and turquoise lake waters give way to glaciers, frozen lakes, and snow-capped mountains in this epic 7-day journey through central Switzerland.

The tour explores four towns – Lucerne, Interlaken, Zermatt, and St. Moritz – with multiple overnight stays in the same locations. This allows you to thoroughly explore these beautiful towns and gives you enough time to explore all the mountains you want in the Alps.

The itinerary includes a ride on the Glacier Express train and an optional ride on the Bernina Panorama Winter train. Packages for this itinerary start at CHF 940, which includes overnight stays with breakfast and a seat reservation for the Glacier Express.

The Swiss Rail Pass And Packages

Swiss Rail Pass

The Grand Train Tour of Switzerland can cost you anywhere from a few hundred Swiss francs to a few thousand, depending on the type of ticket/package you purchase.

A Swiss Travel Pass is all you need to be able to travel on the Swiss trains, and the prices start at 232 CHF for a three-day pass. The longer the validity of the pass, the more it’s going to cost. Also, keep in mind that the Swiss Travel Pass only covers the cost of the train rides – accommodation, meals, and tickets to attractions are all coming out of your budget. Read this guide for more info about the Swiss Travel Pass.

That’s precisely why many people choose to book package deals, which include all of the above, as well as train travel. You can purchase a package that covers any of the suggested itineraries, and even the full Grand Train Tour that covers the entire 1280 kilometers of the route.

Additionally, you will need to spend extra money on the seat reservation for the panoramic trains. Reservations are necessary, and they’re usually around 20 CHF per seat, regardless of the class.

Finally, I would encourage you to pay extra for a 1st class travel pass, if you can afford it. The panoramic trains have windows that are either on the roof or curve over the roof in 1st class, for truly spectacular views the entire time. It will bring the train journey experience to a whole new level, and it’s worth the extra money.

Grand Train Tour of Switzerland App

Asian travellers seem to have a soft spot for mountainous Switzerland. Maybe the enduring popularity of a certain K-drama called Crash Landing On You, which had pivotal scenes filmed in Switzerland, has something to do with it. Or perhaps its picturesque natural landscapes are so different from the bustling metropolises of Asia, making it one for the bucket list.

So, if you want to indulge in the best that the country has to offer, here are the most luxurious highlights of some of the most popular destinations across the country.

Interlaken: Set jet to an evergreen K-drama filming location

The deep turquoise blue lakes of Interlaken and the snowcapped mountain peaks of the surrounding Jungfrau region might look familiar because this is the region where many Crash Landing on You scenes were filmed. Plus, the town of Interlaken is also a pleasant two-hour train ride from Zurich airport, making this an ideal first stopover upon arrival.

While adventure sports like snowboarding or paragliding (which features prominently in the series) are popular here, a high octane activity that does not require much physical dexterity on the participant’s part is a jet boat ride by Outdoor Switzerland on Lake Brientz, one of two lakes that flank Interlaken. Much of the ride is calm – the boat glides along the lake’s mirror-still surface – so there is time to appreciate the imposing mountain peaks and impressive waterfalls. But every so often, the guide will floor the pedal, causing the boat to spin wildly in a 360-degree turn, for a neat boost of adrenaline. Tip: Ask your guide to point out the pier at the historic town of Iseltwald, where the pivotal piano scene of CLOY was filmed.

In Interlaken, the historic Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa – conveniently located in front of a paragliding landing field – is one of the best stays in the area with its classically designed rooms that offer great views of the mountain range.

Otherwise, the rustic Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof in the charming town of Grindelwald offers easy access to the nearby Jungfraujoch, the highest train station in Europe at an elevation of 3,463m – no hiking necessary.

Take the new Eiger Express tricable gondola, which not only takes a speedy 15 minutes to get to the peak, it is also extremely stable even in windy conditions. For an extra-special ascent, consider the VIP package, which includes access to a lounge as well as a ride on a specially designed private gondola cabin with swivel armchairs for panoramic views and a celebratory glass of champagne.

Lausanne and Vevey: The Swiss Riviera

That swanky Riviera lifestyle awaits on a sojourn to the cities of Lausanne, Vevey and Montreux, located along the northeastern shore of Lac Leman (as French speakers call Lake Geneva).

Each city is known for something a little different – the annual Montreux Jazz Festival is held in Montreux; Vevey’s old town hosts the ancient Fete des Vignerons wine festival and Lausanne is the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee. Its excellent  Olympic Museum , which has interactive exhibits as well as plenty of Olympics-related memorabilia, is well worth a visit especially since the Summer Olympics takes place in Paris this year.

Also make time to visit the picturesque, terraced vineyards of the Lavaux vineyards, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that continues to produce light, crisp and fruity wines made from the local chasselas grapes.

The best way to commute is to hop on a historic Belle Epoque paddle steamboat . Featuring handcrafted interiors which have been restored to their former glory, there are restaurants and lounges within these elegant boats for a leisurely, multi-course meal, all in the name of slow travel.

You cannot beat staying at Beau-Rivage Palace in Lausanne, a 160-year-old grand European hotel with its own Guerlain Spa, some of the most aesthetically pleasing classically designed rooms and suites in the country as well as the two Michelin starred Anne-Sophie Pic restaurant, slated to reopen this September.

Or, for a bit of fashion history, sister hotel Lausanne Palace has a magnificent Coco Chanel suite, named for the designer who once lived there and which still houses several artefacts of hers, like a mini writing desk.

Geneva: A city of fine living

You know you are in Geneva when building rooftops are adorned with signs spelling out luxury Swiss watch brands like Rolex and Baume & Mercier. After all, this is the city that hosts the world's biggest watch fair, Watches and Wonders.

For weekend getaways or those travelling in larger groups, the Ultima Geneva Grand Villa , located about 20-minute drive from the city, is a swanky nine-room private residence complete with its own staff including a private chef and butler. Its impressive array of features includes outdoor pools, a hammam and screening room. There is even a cavernous underground entertainment centre that we hear is suitable for private parties.

Within the city centre, the all-suite Pierre-Yves Rochon-designed The Woodward stands out like a jewel. Its stunning light-filled Mont Blanc suites with a separate living room and a spacious bathroom are standouts, especially on a sunny day when the mountain can be viewed from across Lake Geneva.

The hotel also houses two-Michelin starred l’Atelier Robuchon . Helmed by executive chef Olivier Jean, who previously headed up the group’s Taipei outpost, expect familiar favourites like perfectly seared steaks and fluffy, buttery mashed potatoes as well as delightful seasonal fare.

grand train tours of switzerland

Elsewhere, watch shopping is unparalleled but for an artisanal experience, assemble your own mechanical watch at watches and jewellery workshop Initium . Chocoholics will enjoy the city’s Choco Pass , which offers generous tastings (and discounts) at various local chocolatiers including modern chocolatier Giullaume Bichet and the family owned Canonica. And oenophiles can hop on a quaint tuk tuk ride by tour company Welo to visit nearby vineyards and sample some of the city’s finest wines fresh from the source.

Chur: Capital city of the Swiss Alps

Chur is the capital of the east Switzerland canton of Graubunden, known for the swish resort town of St. Moritz and health resort destination Davos, popularised as the location of the annual World Economic Forum.

It is also a hub of the Rhaetian Railway, which includes the iconic Glacier Express train that meanders through the Alps across 291 bridges and 91 tunnels. Its Excellence Class seats with oversized windows, are highly recommended for panoramic view. Like a business class flight, the cabin service includes multi-course meals with wine pairings.

To break up the long train journey, stay overnight in the lively university town of Chur. Here, you take a cableway ride from the city centre directly into the mountains. Alternatively, for an undeniably Swiss encounter, let loose and learn how to play the traditional Swiss Alphorn under the tutelage of local legend Werner Erb , an amiable musician with a gift for coaxing simple tunes out of even the most bemused novice.

Zurich: Switzerland’s largest city

Zurich, the country’s financial hub, is the ideal place to cap off a Swiss vacation, especially since it boasts a wealth of cultural attractions, including numerous museums.

The Zurich Opera House offers a lineup of performances while its atmospheric Old Town is home to the historic Grossmunster and Fraumunster churches, the latter featuring stunning stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall.

One museum worth visiting is the Kunsthaus Zurich , which houses an impressive but controversial collection of Impressionist art amassed by World War II arms dealer and industrialist Emil Georg Buhrle. Amid growing controversy, the exhibition was re-curated last November to offer detailed information on Buhrle’s background and the provenance of the artwork, making this an intriguing case study on how modern museums handle disputed artefacts within their collections.

Luxury shopping can be found along Banhofstrasse, the Champs Elysee of Switzerland. This is also where the original outpost of haute chocolatier Sprungli stands, and its decadent truffles are well worth the indulgence.

Luxury hotels are in abundance in this area: There is the newly opened Mandarin Oriental Savoy as well as the Park Hyatt Zurich, a mainstay for pampered travellers, whether for business or leisure.

For a vibrant contrast to the old town, head across the train tracks at Zurich’s main train station to trendy Zurich West, a former industrial area that has been revitalised with former factories and warehouses repurposed into trendy bars, restaurants, galleries and independent Swiss-owned shops.

How to get around Switzerland in style

As a country that prides itself on sustainability, most travellers use Switzerland’s excellent public transport system of trains, buses, trams and boats to get around.

SBB’s luggage transfer service for same day door-to-door luggage delivery is a godsend to avoid dragging huge suitcases through the train stations.

Like the Glacier Express, the GoldenPass Express train, which connects Interlaken to Montreux also has an extra-premium cabin. Its Prestige travel class features plush heated leather seats and are positioned at the front of the train on a slightly elevated platform for even better views. Order the cheese and charcuterie board – and good Swiss wine – and you are set.

The Airportr luggage transfer will pick up your luggage on your day of departure and get them checked in for your flight so you can skip the bag drop queue at the airport.

Day 3: Stoos hike then drive to Interlaken to check into hotel, go for dinner.

Day 4: Oeschinensee hike and toboggan coaster. Back to Interlaken for dinner.

Day 5: Grindelwald first (karts and scooter) then glacier canyon. Back to Interlaken for dinner.

Day 5: Undecided..... Harder Kulm ? Sigriswil suspension bridge? St Beatus cave? Brienzer Rothorn steam train?

Day 6: Drive to Zermatt , check in and look around.

Day 7: Drive to Zurich, check in and look around.

Day 8: Arrive at Zurich airport for 3pm

Does this look too busy or not enough to fill the days? We thought the walks/hikes that we've chosen look the best but we haven't a clue to be honest.

Hello Jammy,

Basically, you want to visit 3 destinations. A bit much for me, 2 would spare you some transfer time you could enjoy, 1 single base would be best. But your trip, your travel style.

Destination 1: central Switzerland . You want to visit two attractions in the Schwyz / Uri area (Stäubifall and Stoos), then a base in Schwyz, Brunnen, Flüelen or Altdorf would be better than far Lucerne .

Destination 2: Bernese Oberland . Oeschinensee, Grindelwald First and then you are undecided. The BO is a large and wonderful region, full of wonderful places and exciting attractions. Document yourself a bit more to pick up three. And a B-Plan in case of bad weather. An "easy" solution would be to focus on the prime area of the Jungfrau mountain group and valleys. Stay in a mountain village ( Grindelwald , Wengen , Mürren) and not in overcrowded lower town of Interlaken .

Destination 3: Zermatt . It's a car -free mountain village, surrounded by the iconic Matterhorn and many of the highest peaks of the Alps. One of, if not the best location in the Alps. Stay up there as long as you can and leave early in the morning to reach directly the Zurich airport to fly out. Hope for good weather. Stay in Zermatt, not in Täsch or Randa: they look close to Zermatt on a map, but they are very far as experience.

August 1st is the Swiss National Day. Wherever you will be, look for a big barbecue party, an Alphorn concert, a politician speech and fireworks at evening.

https://www.interlaken.ch/en/planning/events/top-events/1-august-in-interlaken

And in Zermatt for 31 July and 1 August -

https://www.zermatt.ch/en/zermatt/event/result?tt=1e5hful58045hutbmc364mkl4o&page=0

Normally everywhere has some sort of celebration. Often there are bonfires in the mountains. 1st August also involves a lot of speeches from local politicians (in the local language, not in English) and much wine, beer and sausage is consumed! It is a BIG deal here. Didn't used to be but now it is. Around where I live in the Valais many of the farms have brunches. That might happen in central Switzerland too - I don't know. Local tourist office would. You must sign up for those and of course there is a charge...

How do I get around Switzerland?

There are many ways to get around Switzerland , the two main ways are using public transportation and renting a car. I’ll highlight the best way to get to each destination below. This Switzerland itinerary can easily be used with either a car or by train.

If you choose to get a rental car in Switzerland, I always recommend using this site to compare rates and cars.

If you choose to use public transportation in Switzerland, I recommend getting the Swiss Travel Pass to maximize your time and save you money. The Swiss Travel Pass offers unlimited train rides on most lines, free or discounted gondola rides, and discounts to many attractions though Switzerland.

I find that it’s especially worth buying the Swiss Travel Pass if you are planning to visit Zermatt because the expensive Gornergratt train is quite expensive, and it’s half off with the pass. If you’re comfortable riding trains and buses, I think it’s the best way to travel in Switzerland.

Where do I purchase my Swiss Travel Pass?

You can purchase your Swiss Travel Pass here . Just select the correct number of days for your Switzerland itinerary and check out. The pass begins on your selected date and runs continuously. The Swiss Travel Pass comes in. 3, 4, 6, 8, and 15 day increments.

Swiss Half Fare Card

If you’re unsure of your dates or the amount of time your Switzerland itinerary will be, it might be a good idea to purchase a Swiss Half Fare Card instead. This pass is good for one month and will offer 50% off most trains. There seems to be less of a discount on shorter journeys. I prefer to purchase the more expensive Swiss Travel Pass just for ease of use while I am in the country. But the Swiss Half Fare Card may be a better option if you are only planning on taking several long and expensive rail journeys. You can purchase the Swiss Half Fare Card here .

Renting a Car in Switzerland

If you want a little more freedom during your trip, you may want to consider renting a car in Switzerland . You’ll have the ability to reach some more off-the-beaten-path places that trains can’t reach. Driving in Switzerland is easy, especially if you’re from the US because they drive on the right side of the road.

Download the SBB App for Switzerland Transportation

SBB App – Public transportation in Switzerland is shockingly punctual, clean, fast, and efficient. The SBB app will tell you when and where to get your trains and buses to take you where you want to go. This is the most important app you’ll need in Switzerland if you’re only traveling by public transportation.

I hope this guide to Switzerland transportation will help you get around the country with ease. Be sure to check out the most beautiful places in Switzerland and our Switzerland Itinerary.

There are lots of pros and cons to renting a car in Switzerland and using public transportation. Here’s a good list

Here is a list of pros and cons for traveling Switzerland by train vs. by rental car:

Traveling by Train in Switzerland

  • More scenic views out the window
  • Can relax and enjoy the ride
  • No need to focus on driving/navigation
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Arrive directly in city centers
  • Less flexibility with schedule/stops
  • Can be more expensive
  • Limited luggage space
  • More flexibility with schedule and route
  • Can stop wherever you want
  • Usually cheaper than train
  • More privacy
  • Can carry more luggage
  • Less scenic views
  • Have to focus on driving
  • More planning required for navigation
  • Have to find and pay for parking
  • More environmental impact

I hope this helps you plan your trip to Switzerland!

Michigan Central Station opened in 1913 in Detroit's Corktown neighborhood as one of the country’s most spectacular transportation terminals. It saw 4,000 daily passengers at its peak, but, following decades of declining rail travel, was shuttered in 1988 and sat vacant for three decades.

Ford Motor Co. bought the decaying building in 2018 and spent the next six years renovating it.

Here's what Michigan Central Station looks like inside .

The before-and-after photos give you a clear picture of what the train station looked like during its early days and abandoned years, and how it compares to after the $950-million renovation. Here's a look .

When is the Michigan Central Station concert?

A free concert will celebrate the train depot's rebirth, featuring a lineup of well-known Detroit artists. It will be held at 8:30 p.m. Thursday in Roosevelt Park in front of Michigan Central Station.

The 90-minute show is part of an 11-day series of first-look events dubbed “Michigan Central OPEN." The space will accommodate 15,000 concertgoers.

Who are the Michigan Central Station concert performers?

A blockbuster, all-star celebration of Detroit music will bring  Diana Ross, Jack White, Big Sean and a host of other top names to the restored Michigan Central train station.

Eminem and his manager, Paul Rosenberg, are billed as executive producers of the Thursday night show. The concert is spearheaded by Ford Motor Co., which spent nearly $1 billion to renovate the site and unveiled the artist roster Monday morning after weeks of buildup.

Other performers include hip-hop duo Slum Village , gospel stars Kierra Sheard and the Clark Sisters , techno-house DJ Theo Parrish and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra . The show will also feature visiting artists such as Jelly Roll , Fantasia , Common and Melissa Etheridge performing tributes to the city’s rich music heritage.

Branded as “Live From Detroit: The Concert at Michigan Central,” the event will stream live on Peacock, then air Sunday on NBC as a prime-time special.

Here's more from Brian McCollum.

How can I watch the Michigan Central concert elsewhere?

The Downtown Detroit Partnership (DDP) will host watch parties at the following parks:

  • Campus Martius Park, 800 Woodward Ave., with capacity for 5,000 people.
  • The Corner Ballpark at 1680 Michigan Ave., with capacity for 2,500 people.

Local businesses will also host watch parties, including:

  • Alpino Detroit - Michigan Central Opening Reception Hour at 1426 Bagley St.
  • Armando’s Mexican Restaurant - MC Open Watch Party at 4242 Vernor Hwy.
  • La Jalisciense Supermercado & Taqueria at 3923 Vernor Hwy.

  • Mercury Burger Bar at 2163 Michigan Ave.
  • Momento Gelato and Coffee at 2120 Trumbull.

How do I get to Michigan Central Station?

Major events can drive plenty of traffic in the Corktown area. Several  roads will close  throughout the reopening event, but visitors can choose from nearby street parking, free parking in the 1501 Wabash St. garage on a first-come, first-served basis, riding the bus through the Detroit Department of Transportation, e-scooters or ridesharing.

Michigan Central Station road closures

When are the michigan central station tours.

Free public tours of the Michigan Central Station begin Friday, June 7, and continue through Sunday, June 16 . Registration for these tours is sold out. These "OPEN Houses" from June 7-16 will allow visitors to experience the grandeur of the restored station through an "immersive" tour. Visitors can expect to explore various activations, storytelling and art throughout the ground floor of the train station.

In addition, OPEN Outdoors will take place outside of the train station on the front lawn of the renovated Book Depository building, now known as Newlab.

After June 16, the first floor will be open for tours on Fridays and Saturdays through the summer. Expanded hours will later be announced for the fall, when the first phase of commercial activations opens to the public, according to a news release.

Here's more .

What's next for Michigan Central Station after reopening?

After reopening festivities, Michigan Central will begin a "phased reactivation" of the train station for several months as restaurant, retail and other commercial and community-focused partners fill the space.
