Best Senior Travel Destinations in 2024

With COVID-19 vaccination rates on the rise, it looks like this summer will be safer for travel than the last one. Especially if you and your loved ones are vaccinated, there’s no reason you can’t get out of the house and explore what the country has to offer.

No matter what your budget or style preference, there’s a vacation destination for you. The following senior travel destinations are some of my personal favorites, in addition to those of our staff writers.

1. US National Parks

There’s more than one reason for preserving natural beauty, and one of those is so people can continue to view it, savor it, and, ideally, go back home with a keener, and broader, appreciation of the value of the world around them. The U.S. currently has 59 protected areas. Having taken Amtrak up to Montana’s East Glacier National Park, as well as having driven to the Grand Canyon, this writer can honestly state that, not only was the cost of these comfortable trips surprisingly low but the memories also remain indelible.

From California’s Death Valley to Alaska’s Denali, from Florida’s Everglades to Utah’s Canyonlands –– nature’s offerings are infinite, awe-inspiring, and deeply inspirational. For more details on what any of these parks can offer in the way of accommodations, tours, classes, and other recreational activities, check out the National Park Service website. Also, be sure to look into the national park pass for seniors .

2. Disney World, Florida

It’s forgivable if the first thing that comes to mind after reading “Disney World” are the sights and sounds of lots of excited children and long lines. With new COVID restrictions in place, however, park attendance is limited, and rigorous safety measures have been put in place, ensuring that guests will have a socially distanced and pleasant experience. True, Disney World does not offer senior discounts on tickets or accommodations, but you may find discounts at other sites like AAA or AARP.

My personal favorite park would have to be Epcot. Older adults, especially, can appreciate the park’s world showcase, which takes you on a culinary and visual journey through 11 different countries, including Mexico, Japan, and Italy. Even if you can’t currently travel the world, Epcot creates as entertaining of a simulation as possible.

3. Sedona, Arizona

When most people think of Arizona, their mind tends to conjure up images of cacti, rattlesnakes, and scorching hot temperatures. Departing from this image is the beautiful town of Sedona, Arizona. Less than a two-hour drive from the Phoenix airport, Sedona is a sightseer’s dream with its beautiful red rock cliffs and rock formations. Oh yeah, and unlike other parts of the state, Sedona’s average summer temperatures rarely exceed 90 degrees.

Some of my favorite activities in Sedona include hiking, bird watching, and Jeep Tours of the geological wonders. Especially for those into yoga and New Age medicine, Sedona has plenty of offerings. Additionally, if you simply want to kick back and relax, Sedona offers many hotels and resorts, and nothing beats taking in the stunning sunset at Cathedral Rock.

Although Alaska is one of the least frequently visited states in the country (possibly due to its distance), there’s no beating the natural wonders of this state. For those inclined towards outdoor activities, Alaska contains 17 national parks. For those who want a more relaxing trip, Anchorage and Juneau offer all the creature comforts you’d expect.

With COVID rates trending downwards, it’s also a great time to book one of the fabulous cruises along the Alaskan coast. They’re a great way to take in the natural wonders while staying in resort-style amenities, not to mention you’ll be enjoying this all in average temperatures around 70 degrees.

5. Pacific Coast Highway, California

If you’ve ever considered hitting the road with your loved ones and exploring the country via RV , then there’s one route I can’t recommend enough: the Pacific Coast Highway. People often call California its own country in and of itself, and if you travel even part of this 600 mile stretch of coastal road, it’s easy to see why.

The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH for short), spans all the way from San Francisco to San Diego, and it’s considered one of the most scenic and beautiful roads in the world. From the glistening fields of wine country down to the surfing villages of southern California, there’s something along this road for everyone.

6. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Long popular with tourists, this senior-friendly city only becomes more so as time goes on. Culturally, there are few cities of this size that could offer more and, thanks to technological advances, the ways to appreciate it also continue to grow. If you want to see the city and the surrounding area from a fresh perspective, then why not engage in the two-and-a-half-hour scavenger hunt from Tour Beaver.

While covering about one-and-three-quarters miles, and using smartphones or tablets, the players are fed clues and puzzles which they solve, while simultaneously exploring the city. If the scavenger hunt idea appeals to you, Santa Fe is only one of many cities that offer them. Keep in mind that there are those who say the best time to visit this lovely, sunny city is from September to November when the temperatures are most comfortable for the majority of folks. No matter when you go, though, take your sunscreen.

Don’t forget to schedule a boat trip, fishing trip, or for the more adventurous, an evening kayak paddle on the ocean.

7 day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Tour

This was a very well organised 7 day trip to see all the canyons and our guide Adriann was fantastic at accommodating to all our needs. We were a small group of 8 ranging from solo travellers to families such as ourselves and got along very well throughout the 7 days. Although I was not able to see the arches for personal reasons, our guide Adriann was very understanding and made sure the rest of our trip was still amazing. I particularly found Bryce Canyon and Antelope Canyon the most exciting places to visit and the Grand Canyon for my mother which had been number one on her bucket list places to visit. I would definitely recommend this tour and would be keen to go on it again or even on other excursions that they offer!

Yellowstone / Grand Teton 4 Day / 3 Night Wildlife Adventure

This trip was completely worth the time and money spent! We had the pleasure of having two guides: Gannon and Rachel, and they could not have been nicer people. Informative, enlightening, funny, interesting -- they just couldn't have been any better. The scenery in Grand Teton and Yellowstone was magnificent, and we saw plenty of wildlife, up close and at a distance. Hotels were pleasant, and the meals were good. I would recommend this trip to anyone who hasn't traveled to the western United States.

I cannot speak highly enough of this tour. Kris, our tour director, as well as our driver Rose and wellness director Tyler, were all friendly, knowledgeable, and excited to share Alaska with us. Kris is such a warm people-person and consistently went over and above to make this tour what it was, including staying up one night and waking those of us on his list who wanted to see the Northern Lights. The itinerary was no doubt well laid out, but Kris added so many special touches to support Alaskan businesses but also to provide us with extra opportunities to connect with local Alaskans and have the most comfortable and enjoyable experience possible. September was a perfect time to experience this tour. My travel friend and I would highly recommend this trip.

For only having 8 days to try to highlight such a massive, incredible state this tour was amazing! It really gives a great glimpse into the majesty of Alaska and the awesome local people who live here. There were a couple of bumps as the state is trying to recover from covid but all the workers did an awesome job trying to give us the best experience possible. Everyone was incredibly friendly, from the managers to the servers to the housekeepers. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who has limited time visiting Alaska!

Nature's Best: Alaska

We loved everything except the boat tour out of Seward. The seas were way too rough to go out. It was the final tour of the year on that boat. It should of been cancelled and refunded in full. We received $50 each back because the tour was shortened from 6 hours to 5 hours. I repeat again. Waste of time. I did not take a picture. People were throwing up (plenty of them). Did not see any whales. We were notified the day before that the seas could be rough. Globus should of taken the initiative and cancelled. Did not have a good time at all.

Traveling by train around the United States is romantic, convenient, and comfortable — but it's not always cheap.

Booking one of Amtrak’s wide, plush seats or overnight cars can be an expensive proposition, but it doesn’t have to be if you just take a few minutes to dig around the Amtrak site to find every discount, sale, and savings option the train service offers. And Amtrak discounts can be especially huge for one select group: those aged 65 and over.

Amtrak Discounts for Seniors

Amtrak always offers specific discounts to seniors, including its regular 10 percent discount on most rail fares on most Amtrak trains. And, as Amtrak explained on its site, “On cross-border services operated jointly by Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada, a 10 percent senior discount is applicable to travelers aged 60 and over.”

Amtrak Downeaster Line Discounts

Amtrak also offers even bigger savings on specific routes including a 50 percent discount on Downeaster line tickets.

“Catch the train to Portland, ME and explore the Old Port, or head to Boston for a day of shopping, museum visits or a walk along the Freedom Trail. Travel to any destination on the Downeaster and save 50 percent with this special offer available only to seniors (65 and up),” Amtrak explained.

Finding the Right Balance

Years ago, I had the opportunity to join Road Scholar on a trip to Prague. On this adventure, I learned just how fun group travel can be. Every day had a theme, which I loved. At the same time, the formal activities weren’t overwhelming. I had time to walk alone. I discovered secret parks. I wandered through tiny shops and expansive gardens. And, of course, I made plenty of new friends.

Shortly after my Road Scholar trip, I completed a one-month train journey around Northern Europe. This second trip was much more fast-paced. In 10 days, I traveled 6,000 kilometers and visited 12 cities. I traveled by train, car, boat, and bike. I stayed in a new hotel every 2 days. It was an amazing experience… if a little tiring.

My goal on both of these trips was to inspire the women in our community to step out of their comfort zones and consider alternative travel options. 

One of the questions that I asked myself over and over again, as I worked my way around Europe, was whether I was pushing too hard. Was I trying to see too much? Would it have been better if I had taken it easy and “stopped to smell the roses” more often?

Obviously, there is no “right” or “wrong” answer to this question. Both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages.

On the one hand, like many women over 60, I feel a great deal of pressure to see as much as I can in the time that I have left. On the other hand, if I am honest, sprinting from place to place is harder on my body and mind than it used to be.

Does Road Scholar Offer the Best Blend of Fast and Slow-Paced Travel?

I just returned from a two week group travel tour of Ireland and Scotland. Although it was wonderful, I found the fast pace and constantly being on the go stressful and tiring. I am a 70 yo female in good health and fit! Plus, I caught Covid for the first time ever and although fairly mild, it still took its toll and I spent the majority of the trip wearing a mask. As a result of my experience, I had decided over the course of the trip that any future trips I take will be slower paced and immersive. This article is spot on!

Tips for seniors for reducing the cost of travel

Your Victorian Seniors Card means you can enjoy discounted travel in Victoria and Australia-wide.

• Every Seniors Card holder receives free off-peak travel vouchers to use on public transport in Victoria.
• Register for your free vouchers at the PTV website www.ptv.vic.gov.au/vouchers External Link
• Each voucher can be exchanged for either: a V/Line off-peak daily ticket (going out and back on the same day); two V/Line off-peak single tickets (going out on one day and back on another); a 1 Day Travel Pass for travel in Zones 1 and 2.

From 1 November 2022, the Department of Transport is introducing more booking options to make it easier to redeem your free travel and visiting a station during opening hours to redeem your voucher for a ticket is no longer the only option.

• From 1 November 2022 Vouchers will be held electronically so you can choose to redeem vouchers at a staffed station or V/Line agent, or over the phone via the Public Transport Victoria (PTV) call centre.
• You can choose to collect your ticket from a station or agent prior to travel or call 10 business days in advance and have your ticket posted to you.
• And in 2023, you will also be able to redeem your vouchers online.
• Phone 1800 800 007 or visit the PTV website www.ptv.vic.gov.au External Link for more information or to make V/Line reservations. V/Line tickets are subject to availability at off-peak times.
• With a seniors myki you travel free on the weekend within one or two consecutive zones on all metropolitan trains, trams and buses – this includes to outlying metropolitan areas as far as Sunbury and Melton.
• During the week, you can still access discounted rates at all times on all routes with your seniors myki.
• If you take a trip in non-consecutive zones, or a trip of more than two zones, a fare for the whole trip will be charged.

Consider travelling by public transport in off-peak periods. It's less crowded and you still get a great discount with your Seniors Card.

• Travel free on the weekends on V/Line commuter rail services when using myki for trips of one or two consecutive zones (for example, Woodend to Gisborne).
• At other times, V/Line offers concession rates for Seniors Card holders through regional Victoria.
• Take advantage of off-peak rates during quieter times.
• Phone 1800 800 007 for more information or to pre-book tickets.
• The V/Line website lists all its fares and routes www.vline.com.au External Link .
• You can also travel free on regional town bus networks over the weekend in major regional cities such as Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong, Mildura and Warrnambool. On regional town buses where myki is not operating, show your Victorian Seniors Card to travel free on weekends.

Myki works like an electronic purse for public transport. You have to top up the card’s balance whenever it runs low on funds.

The seniors myki offers discounted rates at all times on all routes. You pay no more than the seniors daily cap (zones 1 & 2) when you travel on weekdays.

How do I get a seniors myki?

New Seniors Card program applicants receive a seniors myki for free with their Seniors Card posted with a Welcome pack.

Seniors Business Discount Card holders are not eligible to receive a free Seniors myki card upon joining the program.

Once you have your seniors myki, you should register it. There are many benefits to registering your myki, including free card replacement card if it's lost or stolen. For more information on how to register, visit the Public Transport Victoria website External Link

And you can top it up at:

• Hundreds of shops including all 7-Eleven stores.
• Premium Stations as listed on the PTV website External Link .
• From myki machines at selected train stations and stops.
• Mobile myki app using your Android smartphone. For more information visit the PTV website. External Link

• By calling PTV on 1800 800 007.

Remember - it's a condition that you carry your Seniors Card at all times when travelling on public transport as proof of your concession entitlement.

Replacement myki

Like many other cards, myki cards do expire, so keep track of your card’s expiry date. If your myki is registered and you have an online account – find your card expiry date online. If your myki is not registered, check the expiry date at a myki machine, myki check, or by calling 1800 800 007.

Even if you're travelling for free on the weekend, on myki-enabled services you must touch on and off as normal - you won't be charged.

Support for people with a disability or health issues

• All metropolitan trains are wheelchair accessible and low-floor trams and buses are available on some routes. Most V/Line trains and coaches can be accessed by wheelchairs. More information on accessible transport is available from PTV on 1800 800 007 or www.ptv.vic.gov.au External Link .
• Travellers Aid Australia provides simple, practical travel-related support and aid that helps people travel independently and confidently. This support includes buggy and personal guidance services at Southern Cross Station, help getting to medical appointments in central Melbourne and mobility equipment hire. Centres are available at Flinders Street station (9610 2030) and Southern Cross station (9670 2072) or visit www.travellersaid.org.au External Link .
• Most V/Line trains and coaches can be accessed by wheelchair. Reservations are required for wheelchairs on V/Line coach services. Phone 1800 800 007 at least 24 hours before you travel to reserve a place.
• Victorians with severe and permanent disabilities who cannot access public transport independently may be eligible to join the Multi Purpose Taxi Program – a Victorian Government program that offers its members a 50 per cent subsidy on taxi fares of up to $60 per trip. Contact the Taxi Services Commission on 1800 638 802, or visit www.taxi.vic.gov.au External Link for more information.
• Car pool with a neighbour or friend when driving to the shops or running errands.
• The free City Circle tram service in the CBD takes in major tourist attractions, and links with other tram, train and bus routes in and around Melbourne. Trams run in both directions every 12 minutes between 10am and 6pm Sunday to Wednesday and extended hours, 10am to 9pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday (excludes Christmas Day and Good Friday). • Cars can be expensive to maintain and keep on the road. If you’ve got easy access to public transport, why not sell your car?
• Many councils offer free or heavily discounted travel services (such as bus or shuttle services) to older residents. Contact your local council to find out what you are entitled to access.

Car not running well? Ask your local servo what discounts they offer before you purchase. Or visit Seniors Online to find discount auto services in your area. Visit the Discount Directory and scroll down to the 'Automotive Care' category.

You can even get a Seniors Card discount when washing your car. - Bill

• Take advantage of discounts from interstate Seniors Card participating businesses when you travel.
• Commonwealth offers to state and territory governments to provide reciprocal transport concessions for state seniors card holders will be withdrawn. While Victoria government at this stage will be continuing to provide interstate seniors with Victorian transport concessions, it is not clear whether other states will continue to do so. Please contact Seniors Card programs in each state and territory for information in this regard.
• You can use your Victorian Seniors Card with New Zealand retailers and traders. Visit the New Zealand SuperGold website at www.supergold.govt.nz External Link or call 0800 25 45 65 when in New Zealand.
• Take your Seniors Card when you travel overseas. Some overseas businesses will provide you with goodwill discounts if you ask.
• Check out the www.smartraveller.gov.au External Link website for useful travel information and advice.

• Check if your travel company offers discounts to Seniors Card holders.
• Travelling outside school holidays is always cheaper and travelling late at night or taking a longer route can be cheaper too – especially with flights. Consider going during the week instead of on the weekend or taking flights with stopovers.
• ‘Shoulder season’ – the time just before or after the peak holiday season – is a cheaper time to travel. The weather is still generally good in destination cities and there are fewer tourists.
• On most budget airlines you can avoid a baggage fee by only travelling with carry-on luggage.
• Cruise and tour companies often offer discounted rates close to the departure date. Try searching online for ‘cruises’ and ‘last-minute’ or ‘discount’.

Take a low-cost holiday with family or friends in regional Victoria or Melbourne by using your free travel vouchers and staying somewhere that offers a Seniors Card Discount. If you're on Seniors Online, choose the 'Accommodation' category in the Discount Directory .

10 Essential Travel Tips for Seniors: Planning Ahead, Packing Wisely, and Using Assistive Travel Services

I first wrote a letter to HIE’s CEO about the situation and did not receive a response. I then emailed HIE and was told to contact Priceline, since they were the company through which the hotel booking was made. I will contact Priceline, but am not optimistic about getting help from them either.

I informed the Federal Trade Commission of this incident and was told that they would add this incident to their database but would not contact HIE or Priceline directly.

I am posting this comment for two reasons:

1. I want other Trip Advisor users to be aware of deceptive advertising by Holiday Inn Express and Priceline.

2. If anyone has ideas of other steps that I could take, I would very much like you to share them with me.

If this post should be on another Tripadvisor forum, let me know which one. I did not see a forum for hotels or lodging. Thank you very much for your time and help.

It seems from reading that post that this was right at the time of the solar eclipse and that might have driven up local pricing.

Sometimes people get results by doing a shout out on X-formerly known as Twitter as big corporations do not like negative comments on there. I have no idea how to do that...hopefully you've got young person in the family that can guide you thru that.

If you do contact Priceline as HIE suggested then it sounds like the reservation was actually made thru them? It was not clear from your post on the Air Travel forum, it sounded like your wife had called and then showed up at the hotel without a booking, but now it sounds like they actually did the booking thru Priceline.

I guess I don't understand the issue. I have never used Priceline to book anything, so am not familiar w/ how its website operates.

If they used it to book a room, didn't it at some point in the booking process before they accepted the reservation tell them the "all-in" cost of the room, including applicable taxes and fees (which can sometimes add quite a bit to the advertised room rate)? If so, then I don't see what they can legitimately complain of.

Did they pay for the room w/ a credit card (not a debit card)? If so, and they do have a legitimate complaint of being overcharged and can substantiate it, have they filed a dispute w/ the credit card company?

Any price advertised specifically by Holiday Inn represents cost if you book direct, though I could see there being a caveat for peak pricing, such as during an eclipse.. Not sure how much control Holiday Inn has over what Priceline chooses to charge, but it seems Holiday Inn isn't the problem here.

Avoid traffic: the absolute best times to travel during Memorial Day weekend 2024

Near-record crowds are expected to hit the road for the holiday weekend

Hitting the road for the unofficial start of summer? This year, AAA projects that the number of travelers leaving home for Memorial Day weekend 2024 will hit 44 million. That’s a four percent increase over last year, and second only to record numbers in 2005. Needless to say, it’s going to be a busy travel period. So listen up: here’s when to travel—and when not to travel—over Memorial Day weekend to avoid peak crowds.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

AAA has the data to help you avoid traffic, if you have some flexibility. Drivers heading out on Thursday, May 23rd, or Friday, May 24th, should be on the road before 11am or after 7pm Thursday and 8pm Friday. If you’re leaving on Saturday, May 25th, try to head out before 1pm or after 6pm. As for the return trip on Monday, May 27th, hold off until after 7pm to dodge the peak traffic.

The worst times to travel, according to AAA, is Thursday between noon and 6pm, and Friday between noon and 7pm. Expect peak congestion between 2pm and 5pm on Saturday, and from 3pm to 7pm on Sunday. On Memorial Day, prime traffic time will be between 3pm and 7pm.

If you’re traveling through major metropolitan areas, be prepared for traffic and try to avoid rush hour. “Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are Intrepid travellers?

Intrepid adventures are for travellers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're travelling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers. 

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over. 

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travellers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website. 

I’m travelling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travellers join because they are travelling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognising that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport. 

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travellers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travellers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by travelling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re travelling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you. 

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organised on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you. 

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you. 

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information. 

How does group time work?

Whether you’re travelling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you. 

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travellers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

From holidays to shopping: eight discounts for UK over-60s you might not know about

It’s still the magic milestone when senior citizenship begins … with a host of money-saving offers to take advantage of

Travel for free

The UK state pension age has risen but many companies and organisations still hold on to “the big 6-0” as the point at which senior citizenship begins, and it continues to represent a money-saving milestone as a result.

In Wales and Scotland you qualify for an older person’s free bus pass from the age of 60. You have to apply and provide proof of age and address and a passport-style photo.

In Scotland you access free bus travel via the National Entitlement Card, which also gives those who live on Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles two free return ferry journeys to the Scottish mainland each year.

In England, the older person’s free bus pass only arrives when you hit the state pension age (currently 66) – with notable exceptions being London and Liverpool. If you live in the capital, you can travel there for free when you are 60. You can get a 60+ London Oyster photocard until you are eligible for a Freedom Pass, for which the current eligibility age is 66.

The 60+ photocard gives you free travel on buses, the tube, trams, Docklands Light Railway, London Overground, the Elizabeth line (excluding between West Drayton and Reading) and most National Rail services in London, from 9am on weekdays and at any time at weekends and on bank holidays (it’s from 9.30am on weekdays for the National Rail services). You also get discounted fares on river services such as Thames Clippers, and discounts on Santander cycle hire. For full details, check out the TfL website .

Merseytravel offers a similar arrangement in Merseyside.

Get a rail or coach card

The senior railcard is for those aged 60 and over and costs £30 a year, or £70 for three years, and gives you a third off rail travel.

National Rail, which issues the cards, says people with a senior railcard save on average £86 a year , or £5.26 a journey . The railcard is not valid during the morning peak period – times differ around the country, so you will need to check before you travel.

A National Express senior coach card, which costs £15 plus £3 postage, gives you a third off standard and fully flexible fares, plus £15 day returns to anywhere in the UK on Tuesdays, Wednesday and Thursdays.

There are no restrictions on peak and off-peak travel times, so you can travel when it suits you.

Holiday for less

If you are booking a trip away, ask whether your airline, train company or hotel, including chains overseas, offers a senior discount.

The budget hotel chain Travelodge has in the past offered over-60s 25% off selected stays, while Wyndham Hotels & Resorts in the US is among those offering reduced rates. Eurostar offers special senior fares for those aged 60-plus on its continental routes (for example, Brussels to Paris and Brussels to Amsterdam), but not for journeys between the UK and mainland Europe.

Enjoy a show

Many theatres and cinemas have special deals and showings for those aged 60-plus.

You can get £20 off tickets for midweek matinees (applying to full-price £89 and £69 tickets, or £79 and £59 tickets for the forthcoming production of Ballet Shoes) at the Lyttelton and Olivier theatres at London’s National Theatre . For shows in its Dorfman Theatre, higher-priced tickets are reduced to £36 for midweek matinees.

Other London theatres offering discounted tickets for over-60s include the Old Vic and the Young Vic.

The Ambassador Theatre Group runs one of the UK’s biggest ticketing operations, ATG Tickets, and says those over the age of 60 will get discounts at selected venues and shows, so it’s worth checking before you book. The Picturehouse cinema chain’s free-to-join Silver Screen club gives over-60s a free hot drink and discounted tickets, typically for matinee shows. The Odeon chain’s Silvers scheme shows films at quieter times of the day, with tickets from £3.50 including tea, coffee and biscuits served before the film.

Showcase cinemas have Silver Screenings on a Monday, with tickets for all films starting before 4pm usually discounted to £4.99.

Almost a million over-60s take advantage of the National Trust’s senior concession, a 25% discount off membership, bringing the cost down to £68.40 for individual senior membership, or £113.40 for joint senior membership, provided you have been a member for at least the last three consecutive years. The Royal Horticultural Society offers a hefty discount on its life membership, reducing the individual price from £1,495 to £935.

Shop with a discount

The supermarket chain Iceland has a Bonus Card scheme that provides all shoppers with offers and savings, but has an extra perk for cardholders over 60: a 10% discount in its shops every Tuesday. When shopping you will need to show ID – a senior bus pass, senior railcard or driving licence.

Asda is another retailer that targets the over-60s with deals. It ran a popular “winter warmer” meal deal between 1 November last year and the end of February this year, which offered soup, a roll and unlimited tea and coffee for only £1 in any of its 205 cafes. Keep an eye out for future offers.

Play or watch sport

Older fans of sports including football, cricket and rugby can often get discounts on tickets. In many cases you have to be at least 65 or 66 but there are several football club season ticket schemes, such as Sheffield United’s, that start reductions at the age of 60.

Some golf clubs offer membership discounts or incentives to older players. The age requirements vary. The GolfSupport.com website carried out a UK survey and published its findings , which may help you track down a good deal in your area.

Stay healthy

NHS prescriptions in Scotland and Wales are free for everyone but in England you need to pay until you turn 60; after that they are free.

In Wales, those aged 60-plus can get free NHS dental examinations, too. Everyone in Scotland is entitled to free NHS dental examinations.

NHS-funded eye tests are free for everyone in Scotland. In the other countries of the UK, those who are 60 and over are entitled to free NHS eye tests, which you can take up at most opticians.

Specsavers offers over-60s 20% off glasses, while Boots Opticians has a 10% discount on your first pair of glasses.

With the Advantage Card loyalty scheme at Boots you can access Over 60s Rewards, which gives you more points: eight for every £1 spent on Boots brands and selected exclusives, including No 7, Botanics, Liz Earle, Champneys and Joules.

According to AAA, Texas is projected to see 3.6 million travelers this Memorial Day holiday, a 4.2% increase from last year. Nationally, 43.8 million people are expected to travel for the holiday, reflecting a 4.1% rise from the previous year and nearly reaching the 2005 record of 44 million.

Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, said people are eager to travel this season. 

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” she said. “We’re projecting an additional 1 million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels, but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”   

Top destinations for Texans during Memorial Day weekend

According to AAA Texas travel advisers , the top road trip destinations in the state are:

How many people are expected to travel by car vs. airplane?

Airports are gearing up for a surge in travelers as AAA forecasts 3.51 million air passengers this holiday weekend, a 4.8% rise from last year and a 9% increase compared with 2019. Despite this uptick, ticket prices remain on par with last year's rates for Memorial Day weekend.

Various factors influence the cost of plane tickets, such as destination, number of layovers and fare class. For instance, passengers opting for nonstop flights with amenities such as seat selection and checked bags can expect to pay more than those choosing basic economy with a layover.

How much does gas cost in Texas? 

This Memorial Day weekend, motorists should anticipate gas prices akin to those of the previous year, hovering around the national average of approximately $3.60.

According to AAA, Texas’ average gas price is $3.17, up from $3.08 last year.

AAA recommends to do the following before traveling by road:

• Inspect vehicle tires, battery, and fluid levels before a long road trip. Nationwide, AAA expects to rescue more than 378,000 stranded drivers at the roadside, including nearly 20,000 in Texas.
• Pack food, water, an emergency kit, first-aid kit, and mobile phone charger in case you break down.
• Book summer travel now. High demand and reduced schedules will mean fewer options.
• Map out your journey in advance and familiarize yourself with alternative routes in case of traffic or road closures.
• Always wear your seatbelt, follow speed limits, and avoid distractions like texting while driving.

At $395 per year (see rates and fees ), this premium card is cheaper than all of its competitors without sacrificing the breadth of valuable perks it includes. Additionally, those looking for a way to fill gaps in their points earning strategy will benefit from the flat 1 point per dollar spent on other purchases outside of the main travel categories.

You’re also getting an up-to-$100 Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee credit  once every four years along with Priority Pass Select membership. And Chase’s slate of transfer partners allows plenty of opportunity to get the maximum value from your points.

Those looking for elevated earning rates and extensive travel protections should have this card in their wallet. The 50% redemption bonus when you use your points to pay for travel through the Chase portal  is also a nice perk.

Travel vs cash back credit cards

A travel credit card is a card that is geared toward travel spending and a cash-back credit card is a card that earns cash back on purchases made with the card.

Generally, when we are talking about travel credit cards we refer to cards that earn points and miles like the Platinum Card from American Express or the Hilton Honors Aspire card. The Platinum Amex earns transferable points which can be used with any of Amex's travel partners while the Hilton Honors Aspire card only earns Hilton points which can be redeemed at Hilton properties. These cards do not earn cash back on any purchases.

Cash back cards generally offer cash back as a flat rate or feature bonus categories that earn an elevated cash back rate. Select cash-back cards can also be a great travel card such as the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express which offers 3% cash back on transit including rideshare, trains, buses, and more. Even though it is a cash-back card, the Blue Cash Preferred offers an elevated return on select transportation which potentially makes it a solid travel card option.

How do travel credit cards work?

Travel credit cards work like other reward credit cards: They help you earn rewards, primarily points and miles, on your purchases. How to earn transferable points

Transferable points credit cards earn points or miles when you make a purchase on the cards. These points and miles can then be transferred to travel partners for rewards like flights, hotel stays and more. Different cards will have different currencies, but they are generally called either “points” or “miles” (depending on the issuer). All transferable reward credit cards, airline credit cards and hotel credit cards will have their own currency that is redeemable for travel rewards. 

Travel cards have varying rates for different purchase categories. For example, the American Express® Gold Card card earns 4 points per dollar spent on restaurants but only 3 points per dollar spent on flights booked directly with the airline or Amex Travel. While the Amex Platinum may be a better card for travel as it earns 5 points per dollar spent on flights (booked directly with airline or Amex Travel and up to $500,000 per calendar year), the Amex Gold can be a good addition for Platinum holders who spend a lot of money on dining out.

How to redeem points and miles  

Once you’ve decided on a travel credit card and earned a welcome bonus, it’s time to put those points or miles toward free travel. There are many ways to redeem your rewards with travel credit cards. Many cards feature an online booking portal through which you can use your rewards to book things like flights, hotels and car rentals. Before booking your flight, you should consider doing a  flight portal comparison to ensure you're getting the best redemption. Others allow you to transfer your points or miles to individual loyalty programs. Depending on the redemption, this could unlock even more value.

How to use travel credit card portals  

In the world of travel credit cards, the four major players are American Express, Capital One, Chase and Citi. These issuers also have their own travel portals which can be used to earn and redeem points for travel. 

Some issuers, like Capital One and Chase , offer an incentive to book travel through the bank’s portal but it is not always worth booking through a portal. 

We do not recommend booking hotel travel through card portals as it typically does not honor elite-status benefits or elite-qualifying stay credits. 

Luckily, flights typically allow you to earn bonus points through a card issuer’s portal and with the airline. Keep in mind that this does not apply to all cards. When purchasing in cash, there generally is little variance in booking through a portal or on the airline’s website so if your travel credit card offers incentives to book through the portal , it can be a great way to earn extra points.

Points and miles redemptions will have a fair variance, especially if there are incentives to book through the travel portals. Overall, travel portals can be a great addition to your points redemption journey if properly used. Always remember to compare the price or redemption value of booking through a portal or directly with an airline.

The points and miles world can be confusing for new credit card users but it doesn’t have to be. Fixed-value credit cards and cash-back credit cards are good alternatives for beginners who are looking to get into the travel credit card world.

Fixed-value cards earn points or miles that are always redeemed for the same value. For example, the Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card earns points worth 1 cent each. These cards are great for beginners who haven’t quite gotten the hang of maximizing transferable points or casual travelers who are looking for their first travel credit card . Fixed-value credit cards are often the best travel credit cards for beginners. 

As more hotels and airlines move to a dynamic pricing model where award pricing shifts dramatically, fixed-value rewards programs are becoming more popular.

Travel credit card benefits

Some travel cards offer automatic elite status with various programs when you sign up and can also accelerate the journey to elite airline status by converting points to air miles. If you are loyal to a particular hotel brand, status with that brand will be valuable. You’ll be entitled to room upgrades, resort credits, early check-in, late checkout and more. If you’re not loyal, it won’t. The same goes for elite status with an airline — you’ll get lounge access, upgrades, increased baggage allowance, etc. When comparing the perks of various cards like elite status, be realistic about which ones you will and won’t use.

One of the coveted perks of premium travel credit cards is complimentary airport lounge access. Many premium travel credit cards come with Priority Pass lounge access , a membership that allows access to airport lounges across the world. These lounges are a great place to relax before your flight or have a snack during a long layover. Amenities will vary between lounges but most lounges provide wifi, private seating and refreshments. Be sure to check the priority pass guest policy as many lounges allow you to bring a complimentary guest (or guests).

TSA PreCheck and Global Entry are both expedited screening programs for travelers. TSA PreCheck is reserved for expedited security screening for domestic flights and Global Entry provides expedited customs screening for international travelers when entering the United States. 

The application fee for TSA PreCheck is up to $85 and $100 for Global Entry. If you are approved for the program, the membership is valid for 5 years. Many travel credit cards will offer statement credit for the application .

Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and her entourage are set to travel to Las Vegas on a business trip, shortly after the Democratic mayor faced scrutiny for going on a taxpayer-funded trip to the Masters Golf tournament.

A description of the event on the  mayor’s public calendar  said that she would attend the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) on an “economic mission.”

“On Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, Mayor Bowser will attend the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) LAS VEGAS to attract retail to the District of Columbia,” the description said. “This economic mission is coordinated by the Washington, DC Economic Partnership, which has organized the District’s presence at ICSC since 2001.”

In a press release , Bowser’s office touted the benefits reaped by attending the ICSCS.

“We know that Washingtonians in every part of DC want access to fantastic amenities. From the Lidl in Ward 7 to the Wegmans in Ward 3, those are conversations that started at ICSC,” said Bowser.

“Through programs like the Food Access Fund and the Neighborhood Prosperity Fund, we have made good progress in filling amenity gaps, but there is still more to do to ensure greater accessibility and equity – and filling those gaps and supporting the continued transformation of Downtown will be a focus of this trip.”

Bowser will attend the conference, which is held at Wynn Las Vegas, along with 14 other elected officials and staff members.

Elected officials’ goals at the conference include “expanding the Washington, DC brand as a premier business environment and investment opportunity; generating business leads for major development projects and DC’s neighborhood corridors, including Downtown; fostering business relationships and engaging with new prospects including retailers and brokers for later cultivation; and promoting the unique retail and restaurant opportunities in our neighborhoods,” Bowser’s office said in a press release.

The latest trip comes after the Democratic mayor faced scrutiny over transparency about her trip to the Master’s Tournament in Augusta, Georgia last month.

According to the  mayor’s public schedule , Bowser attended the world-renowned golf tournament, “as part of a sports and economic development visit.”

Her team said that the mayor was invited by a major real estate company that does business in DC.

Bowser had previously defended her taxpayer-funded trip to the world-renowned tournament,  telling FOX 5  that they have “tried to be transparent.”

“We tried to be transparent, so I don’t know what questions you have that remain. We disclosed – I don’t know what questions you have that remain; we expect an invoice if it hasn’t – we haven’t received it yet from EDENS,” Bowser told FOX 5.

Bowser said that the trip to the Master’s tournament cost between $5,000 and $6,000 per person.

“… I believe that the estimated costs were in the range of $5-$6,000 and that’s for air travel … per person,” she told the local outlet.

The mayor did not say how much the trip to Las Vegas would cost.

The mayor defended her taxpayer-funded trip, saying that Washington DC is the “sports capital.”

“Listen, voters have placed their trust in me to make the best decisions for the District for the last 15 years, including three elections as mayor. We made no secret about the fact that we make sports investments,” Bowser said. “We are the sports capital, and we are going to promote the District in every corner of the world, and that has been my experience as mayor.”
