It’s time to learn more about the local fishers, their daily life, and the cultural values shared by our experienced guides. The cruise moves further into the core of the bay where you can’t help but be amazed by the gift of Mother Nature: a large bay area, the phenomenal emerald water embracing hundreds of rocky islands of various sizes and shapes. 10:30  The boat anchors at  DARK CAVE AND BRIGHT CAVE  area (Sang–Toi Cave). Located in the border region between Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay, this is surely one of the best places for kayaking.

Let’s spend one and a half hours doing kayaking to discover stunning limestone structures and interesting natural habitats there.

If the tide is too high (the water level rises  to the cave entrance), for your safety, kayak outside of the cave only.

10:45:  After enjoying the kayaking activity, our Captain and Tour Guide will choose the best stop for the group to experience a special swimming activity in the middle of the sea and play with the inflatable pool provided for free on the Cruises.

For those guests who do not wish to participate in this activity, they can use the  CHECK-IN WITH SUP  service provided by the staff for free.

(We highly recommend that you wear a life jacket when swimming outside the inflatable pool to ensure a safe journey.)

11:45:  Savor a delicious lunch in the first-floor dining area of the cruise. After lunch, the cruise sails to  Viet Hai Port . Disembark and head to the pier, where electric cars will transport you to the ancient Viet Hai Village.

Along the way, our local guide will choose an old path once used by the villagers, allowing you to experience a part of the pristine beauty of  Cat Ba National Park , ancient forests, and wartime tunnels built by the local people to connect the village to the bay. Discover the history behind this vital route with our knowledgeable guides during your visit. 8.20 : Our guide meet you at the hotel lobby at your hotel in Cat Ba and take a short drive to Beo pier 8.30 : Embark a traditional wooden boat, on the way cruise pass by Cai Beo floating village and witness local living, take a short cruise to Viet Hai pier. and bicycle for roughly 6 kilometres roundtrip village paths and over hills and through tunnels, until you finally arrive in Viet Hai Village.

Viet Hai village of the oldest communities on all of Cat Ba, and you will see traditional houses during your visit here. Ride back to the pier and back to the cruise. Lunch will be served on the boat.

After lunch,The we will get to Tai Keo area for kayaking around . our guide will give a safety instruction briefing of using a kayak After that, take a short cruising to Van Boi beach soak up cool water around the beach. We get back the the pier around 4pm. Transfer back to your hotel in Cat Ba town

Please note that this option is busier since some overnight cruise in Lan Ha offer a visit to Viet Hai village in the morning. 

If you start the tour in Hai Phong, we will start the tour earlier since it takes 45 minutes to the Got Pier, half an hour ferry crossing and half an hour drive from the pier to the Cat Ba town. In total, we will start 2 hours earlier than the tour that departs from Cat Ba island.

We had such a great trip on Lan Ha Bay! We contemplated doing an overnight charter but ended up staying at Cat Ba island and doing a day trip instead. Lan Ha Bay was beautiful and serene and we were definitely able to go off the beaten track. There was little trash and few charters around and we are so happy we went here instead og Halong Bay. We got to see more than the charter boats since we were onboard a smaller boat which are allowed to travel other places. We saw the floating fishing villages, kayaked around Lan Ha and saw a beautiful lagoon and went to a couple of beaches. Since we were the only two on board the trip was very flexible which we appreciated. We sat on the deck at the front of the boat (which we believe was a larger taxi boat) and it was such a great way to see Lan Ha Bay. Our captain was also very helpful and a really cool guy who cooked up some of the best vegetarian food we have gotten in Vietnam in a tiny kitchen on board the boat. Our guide was kind, informative, and funny. The WhatsApp communication before the trip was a bit strange so we were a bit nervous about the trip, but it really exceeded our expectations and we were so happy to be able to enjoy Lan Ha bay without queuing for kayak gear, padling in line, or having to adhere to a strict time schedule.

We had the pleasure of doing a Lan Ha Bay day tour with David. His experience with the area and kind/friendly nature made our day really enjoyable. We travelled with a young toddler (age 3) and he was able to accommodate activities and also food for our son. Even the captain of our wooden boat was very amicable with our tour needs. We very much enjoyed our time and all the kayaking, swimming and food on the tour. Highly recommend David and his tours!

Explore off the beaten tourist path on this excursion to the bays of Ha Long & Lan Ha ,   which will take you on a cruise across these Vietnamese waters.

After picking you up at 7:45 am at your hotel in the center of Cat Ba or at 190-1/4 Street , whichever you prefer, we'll board a minibus and head to the south of the Vietnamese island . 

When we arrive at the port, a boat will be waiting for us to embark at 8 am for an excursion in Lan Ha Bay . Once on board, we'll start the cruise next to the floating fishing village of Beo , also passing by Monkey Island and Buddha Island , two of the most popular tourist attractions in the area.

From the waters of Lan Ha Bay, we'll continue our journey into Ha Long Bay . You'll observe the Ha Long city skyline from the boat and then we'll head for Cam Lagoon to anchor for a tasty Vietnamese lunch on board . After replenishing our strength, we'll rest for a few minutes and then go on a kayak tour to visit Monkey Cave, Dark Cave, Bright Cave and Bat Cave .

Then, we'll have a blast snorkeling in the natural area of Ba Trai Dao , after which we'll return to the boat to watch the sunset from the upper deck.

8:00 – 9:30: Explore the local life of a fishing village on the island, either by cycling or using an electric car. Immerse yourself in the fresh air, surrounded by lush greenery and the charming simplicity of Viet Hai village.

10:00: Check out of your cabin. As we cruise towards the port, indulge in a set lunch.

11:45 – 12:00: Disembark We have a variety of boats available so will be subject to availability

8:00: Get on the bus to transfer to the BEO Pier

8:15: Get on the boat and start cruising by going through BEO floating fishing village, pass out Monkey island and keep cruising around Lan Ha Bay to enjoy hundreds of amazing landscapes of limestone islands.

9:00: Stop to visit one of the biggest fishing farms (spending 20 to 25 minutes walking around the farm to hunt for some pictures of different fish spices or discover how the Vietnamese fisherman support their lives)

10:00: Continue the trip by passing out the Buddha island before crossing the border to get out of Lan Ha Bay and into Ha Long Bay. After being in Ha Long Bay, the boat keeps cruising around less touristic parts of the bay, then goes up to the North part of Ha Long Bay, from which you can sight-seeing to Ha Long city

12:00: Vietnamese food, seafood and vegetarian food for lunch on the boat. After having lunch, participants have time to relax by taking part in jumping, swimming or just playing photographer with the landscapes surrounds.

13:20: Spending one and a half hours on kayaking through DARK CAVE-BAT CAVE-MONKEY CAVE AND BRIGHT CAVE   to explore the beauty of the nature in hidden lagoons, enjoy bird-watching, squirrel-dancing, monkey-jumping. After kayaking, we continue moving to the swimming-snorkeling area named BA TRAI DAO

The first day of the trip (From 8AM to 4.30PM), the trip will be run by a day boat (the boat without cabins: To run faster, to move into hidden areas, to fix the tour itineraries). Around 4.30PM, customers will check in on a sleeping boat with a private cabin and stay on this boat until the end of the trip.

NOTE:   On a few days in a month when the tide is too high, we can’t go through THREE HIDDEN LAGOON , we will instead explore Tung Cai lagoon, the lagoon where the new King Kong movie was filmed.

8:30 – 8:45: Pick up guests at the hotel in the Old Quarter Then, transfer to Tuần Châu pier via the new expressway.

10:30 – 11:00: Guests will have a mid-way break at the cultured pearl farming and display area for about 20-30 minutes.

11:30 – 12:00: Arrive at No.20 Tuần Châu pier.

12:00 – 12:30: Guests board the Hermes cruise and complete check-in procedures.

Cat Ba National Park is an extremely unique national park in the system of national parks of Vietnam. These ecosystems are adjacent and follow each other, creating extremely rich landscapes and habitats. The park is also the only conservation area in Vietnam and the world where populations of Cat Ba langur exist.

8:00-8:30: A bus and our experienced tour guide will pick you up at your hotel in Cat Ba town.

9:00-11:30: Upon arrival at the National Park gate, you will pay the entrance fee and start trekking. Along the trail through the tropical forest, you will be immersed in nature and may spot some mammals such as mink, squirrel, monkey, bird, and many butterflies. If you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the yellow-headed langurs, one of the rarest animals listed in the Red Book. You'll climb over three mountains locally named as ''Ang Vắt, Mây Bầu, Ang Phay''.

11:30: After 2.5 hours of trekking covering a distance of about 6 km, you will reach the frog pond. This is the largest freshwater lake in the middle of the National forest. the bottom of the frog pond, thousands of ''Va Nuoc'' trees reach upwards, a species found exclusively in the Frog ponds and nowhere else on Cat Ba island. The pond is home to many types of fish and crabs. You'll take a 30-minute rest here.

12:00-13:00 : Continue trekking Frog Pond up the last mountain named ''Doc Dài'' to Viet Hai village (4 km). This is a small ancient village of local residents with about 100 families.

13:00: Have lunch and take a rest at Viet Hai village. Experience a fish massage for your feet in the cool stream flowing Cat Ba primeval forest.

14:00: You are free to explore the lives of people in the village or take a bicycle ride 5 km to Viet Hai harbor. Get on a travel boat through Lan Ha Bay, stopping at a floating home for kayaking to discover the beauty of Lan Ha Bay - The most beautiful bay in the world. Enjoy a great time immersing yourself in Lan Ha Bay's clear blue water.

16:00: The boat takes you back to Cai Beo wharf, where you can visit Cai Beo Fishing floating village on the way back. Cai Beo was formed hundreds of years ago, associated with the process of ancient Cat Ba's residents moving the forest to the sea to find food the ocean.

What is the best value for your money and time on a HaLong Bay cruise? These are  our tips and full HaLong Bay cruise review to help you make the best choice.

In this post, we share what we learned from our experience on Venezia Cruises 3-day 2-night Lan Ha Bay itinerary and from extensive research on HaLong Bay. We compare 2 night and 1 night cruise itineraries as well as HaLong Bay vs. Lan Ha Bay / Cat Ba Island.

Is HaLong Bay worth it?

Many people recommended Ninh Binh as an alternative, which is sometimes referred to as “Ha Long Bay on land”. I would say Ninh Binh is an excellent, budget-friendly alternative – and it’s even closer to Hanoi.

That said, there’s a reason this spectacular bay is on so many travel bucket lists.

The first day of our trip there was an unusual, immense fog that limited visibility significantly … and it was still amazing. So in short, yes, HaLong Bay is worth a visit.

I suppose if you’re not a fan of boats or you get seasick, you might want to skip this destination. Seeing it from the water is really the best thing to do here.

Is it worth staying overnight in HaLong Bay?

The answer to this really depends on your budget. The cheapest way to see HaLong Bay is on a day trip from Hanoi. If you’re on a budget, you can do a day cruise and be back in Hanoi at night.  

You can see the highlights of HaLong Bay, which are the karst islands, in one day. Unless sleeping on a boat is an important experience for you, I’d say the main advantage of staying overnight in Ha Long Bay has to do with transit time .

The drive from Hanoi to HaLong Bay takes a minimum 3 hours , so going back and forth in the same day means you’re spending a majority of that day in transit. It’s not ideal.

Is a HaLong Bay cruise worth it?

Many visitors opt for a one night HaLong Bay cruise. To save money, you could also stay overnight in Ha Long City or on Cat Ba Island, then do a day trip by boat into the bay.

Compared to the cost of living in Vietnam, cruise prices are fairly expensive . The cost of a one night cruise would get you a couple weeks of food and accommodations elsewhere in Vietnam.

Whether the value of a HaLong cruise is worth it is definitely subjective .

Though it was a splurge, I’m glad we did it. I haven’t met anyone yet who regrets their choice to book an overnight HaLong cruise, though I’ve read some reviews of folks disappointed with the quality of accommodations.

Is a 3 day 2 night HaLong Bay cruise worth it?

The 2 day 1 night cruise seems to be the most common choice, and you get the full experience of sunset and sunrise among the islands.

That said, if you have the budget to pay for a special experience, I would recommend booking a 2 night cruise in HaLong Bay. This is what we did. Here’s why.

• More time to enjoy, less transit time. After the long journey to the port on Cat Ba Island, I was very glad we did not have to turn around the next day and board the bus back to Hanoi! Staying an extra night allowed us to relax and not feel rushed.
• A special day 2 itinerary. On our cruise boat , it was a small minority of passengers who stayed an extra night. While our ship went back to port to drop people off, we got to take a private excursion with one other couple. We all agreed the second day itinerary was incredible – visiting a floating fish farm, kayaking and seeing monkeys in the trees, and a multi-course lunch cooked by our fisherman-driver on his boat.

Is a Cat Ba Island / Lan Ha Bay Cruise worth it?

According to the guide on our cruise, there are some 600 boats registered to the main Ha Long Bay port. It gets extremely crowded on that side of the bay.

What not everyone may know is that there is another overnight cruise port on Cat Ba Island which has much less boat traffic . Around Cat Ba Island, the bay is called Lan Ha Bay.

Lan Ha Bay and HaLong Bay are two sides of the same body of water, and the border is somewhat arbitrary. In other words, both offer the same magical islands and captivating scenery .

Our cruise itinerary started from Cat Ba Island’s Ben Beo port and sailed through both Lan Ha and HaLong. The guide said the only way you might know when we cross over to HaLong Bay is you’ll start to see a lot more boats and many are larger ships. 

If you’re deciding between Lan Ha Bay vs. HaLong Bay, our guide recommended Cat Ba Island / Lan Ha Bay for overnight cruises and Ha Long Bay for more convenient day tours.

Venezia Cruises Review: Onboard the Ship

Venezia Cruises , which operates out of Cat Ba Island and Lan Ha Bay, offers a one night cruise and a two night cruise on the same boat. 

There was a local crew of about 4 young guys, a captain, and the tour guide (who is a freelancer so he’s contracted by multiple cruise companies, not just Venezia). The crew managed bedroom turnovers each day, dining service at each meal, and assisted with activities like setting up kayaks.

Venezia is billed as one of the luxury cruises in Lan Ha Bay. I wouldn’t be surprised if Venezia’s quality is better than average for the region, however, it might feel more “standard” than “luxury” to some Western travelers.

Due to the sea air, some surfaces were a tiny bit sticky and some facilities or furnishings were a little bit worn. It felt clean but not spotless .

The private bathroom seemed a bit dated but there was piping hot water. Our toilet seat was clearly mismatched, being smaller than the toilet bowl, but this didn’t cause any practical issues.

There was an AC unit, though we didn’t use it. A small closet contains life jackets and some hangers for clothes.

Water bottles are also given free before every excursion, however, you must pay for the same water bottles from the bar if you’d like water at a meal.

We did have some flecks on half of the window, which looked like some muck got splattered on it. It seemed to be permanent, so not a cleanliness issue and it didn’t actually affect our view.

We also struggled to dry our swimsuits, clothes, and shoes in the room. Our things always felt a little damp and some even started to smell of mildew. Just something to be aware of – and granted, this may be less of an issue if you visit during sunnier days.

Some things to be aware of when cruising HaLong Bay

There are some aspects of the HaLong cruising experience that can affect your experience, regardless which cruise you choose. I hope none of this is a turn off, but rather helps set your expectations and prepare.

• Smells – We smelled exhaust more often than I anticipated. Whether it was our ship, neighboring ships, or the tender boat that goes back and forth for boarding and excursions, the scent of exhaust can’t be escaped. Also, and not necessarily unsurprising, our toilet area occasionally had an odor. As mentioned before, the damp enclosed room can also generate mildew.
• Noises – There were also a few times where I was surprised to hear noises like barking dogs or loud music out on the water. The dogs were guarding some of the floating fish farms. The music came from another boat, most likely doing karaoke, at night.
• Trash – The amount of trash floating in the water seems out of hand, and it may be worse since the pandemic. Waste processing facilities and employing people to collect it from the water all costs money, and the tourism sector is still recovering after being shut down. Hopefully this problem can be remedied soon.
• Seasickness – We’re not particularly susceptible to seasickness but we did feel a little queasy at times. The boat rocked very noticeably when we first boarded and were waiting in port. There are also certain parts of the bay that are more open and tend to get more waves. The majority of the time, the boat was fairly still, including at night.
• Crowds – Even with Vietnam’s tourism numbers still not fully recovered and being somewhat “off the beaten path” in Lan Ha Bay, it’s not a remote nor a solitary experience. Overnight cruises from Cat Ba island tend to leave at the same time, so there can be a couple hundred passengers waiting at the port together.While our boat was sometimes on its own among the islands, we could see 5-6 other boats when anchored overnight. And there were large tour groups kayaking, which meant we sometimes had to wait for other kayakers to pass before entering a cave.

The final thing I think it’s important to share is in regards to over-tourism. I don’t have answers to this issue, but it’s important to be aware of so that we can find ways to improve.

With some pressure from responsible travelers, I hope Ha Long Bay will find responsible ways to protect and uplift this magical area and its people.

Venezia Cruise Itinerary Review 2023

One thing I want to highlight in our Venezia Lan Ha Bay cruise review is the itinerary. Among the biggest benefits of going with this company is avoiding excessive crowds while still getting an amazing experience of the bay and Vietnamese culture.

Here’s an overview of what we did on Venezia Cruises.

Day 1 Cruise Itinerary

Venezia Cruises can coordinate your transportation from Hanoi or Ninh Binh, or you can arrange your own transportation like we did. You’ll need to get to Ben Beo (the port) on Cat Ba Island by noon.

There was a small delay in room turnovers when we arrived, so we waited on the boat about 30 minutes before accessing our rooms. The free welcome drink was hot peach tea, so we enjoyed that and explored the decks.

Our fellow passengers were mostly from France and the US, with a few other countries (Germany, Brazil, UK) represented. There were a range of ages, several couples, a solo woman, a traveling family with teens one night, and parents with a baby the second night.

After moving into our rooms, lunch was served in the upstairs dining room and we started cruising into the bay. They set two long, communal tables with open seating. Surprisingly, no chopsticks were provided, only Western utensils.

Meals are included in the cruise price, but any drinks must be purchased separately at the bar.

They provided extra options for vegetarians and those who don’t eat seafood, which featured prominently on the menu. While nothing was super spectacular, everything was very tasty.

We’re pretty sure we had a different cook on the second day, as almost nothing was spicy on day one, while most dishes had some kick on day two and three.

We followed our guide around the karst islands and pulled up the kayaks onto a beach. We followed him under cave – literally crawling on hands and knees – to another hidden beach. This was about 2:30-4pm.

The weather was unusually foggy and cool our first day, and we passed on the option to swim back at boat.

The evening’s dinner was another multi course meal. It included a soup, a variety of seafood dishes, meat or vegetarian dish with cooked vegetables, and fruit for dessert. There was a different menu the second night, so if you choose to stay an extra day, you don’t get any repeat meals.

After dinner, there’s an option to try your hand at squid fishing off the front of the boat. (The other option was karaoke, but I’m not sure anyone ever took the guide up on this.)

It’s pretty simple: just a hook, line and pole under a bright light. No casting or bait. Simply pull straight up if you see a squid close to your hook! In our two nights, only one small squid was caught… and not by Jedd, despite his enthusiasm!

We slept comfortably. There is some light from the boats on the bay, so we opted to close our curtains overnight. You can hear when people open their doors in the hallway, but otherwise, it was quiet and the walls seem soundproof.

Day 2 of the 3 day cruise itinerary

If you’re on the two day, one night cruise, then you go with the guide for a morning excursion, have another meal, and return to the harbor terminal before noon. If you’re on the three day, two night itinerary, then you get picked up by a private boat for a day excursion.

We had the option to swim, or even jump off the top of the boat. Having seen the trash and pollution, we were a little wary of swimming, but one of our traveling companions enjoyed himself in the water.

By the time the driver brought us back to the Venezia, there was a fresh group of passengers returning from their first kayak trip.

Day 3 – Final Cat Ba Island cruise day

There was a nice wide and scenic, paved path about 4 kilometers to the village. The ride was mostly flat apart from two short hills, which some folks walked up with their bikes. Everyone could go their own speed, staying roughly together as a group of 15-or-so from our boat.

We were back on our boat by 9:40am and checked out at 10am, setting out our luggage before brunch.

We were treated to yet another multi course meal, just three hours after breakfast. We filled out a feedback form, waited for the tender, and road with our luggage in two groups to Ben Beo harbor back on Cat Ba Island. The guide stayed until most participants had been picked up by various transport companies.

And that concluded our 3 day Halong Bay cruise from Cat Ba Island.

All in all, we were very happy with the level of service and the itinerary on Venezia Cruises. While I’m sure there are more luxurious HaLong Bay cruises out there, this one suited our budget and avoided massive crowds.

Hi, just throwing out another alternative to Halong Bay cruises. We recently did a 3 day/2 night cruise with Dragon Legend to Bai Tu Bay. Bai Tu Bay is accessible by fewer cruise companies & is not crowded at all. The boat is smaller with 24 cabins and feels intimate. ( their Dragon Pearl is even more intimate with 12 cabins but smaller rooms ). Also, like you, I highly recommend 2 nights, as our 2nd day was the highlight, with a bbq on a private beach on a remote limestone karst island. And, yes, half the the people left after the 1st day, so there were only 13 of us for the remainder of the cruise. The crew was delightful & the food great, even better the 2nd & 3rd day.

Thanks for adding this recommendation! It looks like Dragon starts from Ha Long harbor and then ventures further east than most.

We booked this trip and everything went well as planned. The bay was spectacular as described. There were only 12 people on our trip but we still got a full size bus and boat.The food was excellent and plentiful. The young tour guide was extremely informative and helpful, way beyond belief and the cave was a very worthwhile surprise. From our experience, I completely recommend this trip. If we had more time I would have stayed overnight certainly, to enhance the balance overall. I will recommend this to you and my friends.

Wonderful tour well worth the money. Our guide was helped us understand about the local life and culture was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and spoke English,It was very well pretty cruise, friendly crew, beautiful sights. Talking about the Limousine bus, that was a luxury one, very smooth and cozy, we enjoyed and good relax on this bus, even more than 100 km far from Ha Noi but we was strong after a long day trip. Food was good also, set menu was reasonable set up for this day trip, it was included seafood and Vietnamese food. I liked Vietnamese cuisine very much, it is very tasty and full of flavor. We saw everything promised in the trip. An excellent introduction to the Halong bay.

We got information from our friends who booked this trip when he visited Ha Noi, now we visit Viet Nam and book Lan ha bay trip in 1 day. We chose this trip because we didn't so much time there and when we booked this we had 2 days 1 night itinerary. They picked us quite early, about 7:00 a.m, I knew this is a long day trip and we had to leave early. We spent 2 hours 30 minutes on express way to Hai Phong and from here boat waiting for us. Very quick check in and boat leaving in hurry for long routine trip. A truly beautiful destination. Stunning scenery, the bay is spectacular and most times the sea is calm and take plenty of water. We took a lot of photos from sun desk, about 25 munites, we arrived Lan Ha bay, it was wonderful and peaceful bay. I wished I had more time there and will join 2 or 3 days trip. All the activities were perfected, lunch on the board was excellent, we liked Vietnamese food very much. Thanks halongbaycruises agaency helped us booking this perfect tour. We would love to recommend this trip to all.

We booked this trip from office and we were recommend by our seller should go Ha long bay from Hai Phong in stead of Tuan Chau. the reason from him that was fast and better service and quality. We agreed to book this trip as the man recommended to us, I paid and he gave us receipt. Next morning, tour guide come and pick us up from hotel as the schedule. We arrived in Got peir about 11:30 a.m then checked in on board the same time. Boat trip was very nice and clean. We took a sit on sun desk to take photos, it was very nice and Lan Ha bay was amazing lagoon, it was peaceful and green colour. I had many nice pictures about this bay. The trip more interesting with fluently tour guide and polite, he recommended and helped us understand about the life on bay. Lunch on the boat was very different from the rest. food very tasty especially traditional food, it was amazing. I will return Ha Long bay for 2 or 3 days on board instead of 1 day like we had booked. I will recommend this trip to our hotel friends and Israel. תודה

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a tour guide work that hard to coordinate the group through multiple activities from beginning to end. He was also very informative about the culture and tried to keep us engaged in the history. Lan Ha Bay really is beautiful as described and there were few other cruise ships there since we were visiting in technically the off-season. You are picked up by bus at your hotel, then a boat to Cat Ba island, another bus to the boat that tours Lan Ha Bay. The boat tour starts with lunch served in the lower dining room. Plenty of time to view the islands and later the option to swim and kayak. On Cat Ba there is a short stop at a farm and a brief bike ride (or alternatively a golf cart ride). Most notable was our guide for the day, Charlie. My wife uses a wheelchair and while really not set up well for wheelchairs, this team made it work. Including at one point carrying the chair onto the boat. Charlie ensured seats were reserved at the front of the bus to minimize steps in the transfer. La Han Bay also a great choice as it was practically empty of other boats and not polluted by trash like we were told the other more popular bay can be. The operation is run well, getting to and from Hanoi by bus and ferry to the island was easy (they even paid for us to take a short Grab ride to the bus pickup since our lodging wasn't in the old quarter). Guides were fun, friendly and knowledgeable. Boat was very nice, very clean, lots of space to spread out and relax and get good views/photos. Activities were fun and didn't feel rushed, we kayaked the bay, swam in the bay, bicycled in a village, saw the floating fishing villages. Ha Long Bay Cruise: Exploring Vietnam’s Limestone Labyrinth

S ee a calm, soothing side of Vietnam with an extraordinary cruise in Ha Long Bay. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is famous for its spectacular and mesmerizing scenery—rugged limestone islands encircled by emerald green waters.

Located in the Gulf of Tonkin in Northern Vietnam, Ha Long Bay has more than 1,600 karsts and islets covered with jungle vegetation.

The neighboring Lan Ha Bay sports about 300 limestone islets. And northeast of both is the less visited Bai Tu Long Bay, which boasts 3,000 rocky islets.

These natural wonders of Southeast Asia developed over a period of 20 million years, with the sea sculpting the rocks.

The jagged islets and ancient karsts have been notched and carved by rain and seawater, creating hollow islands and caves.

Two popular caves accessible to tourists on a Ha Long Bay tour are Sung Sot Cave (“Surprise Cave”) and Luon Cave.

Famous for its vibrant green water and epic scenery, Ha Long Bay and La Ha Bay look like scenes from a movie. If you've seen the 2017 film Kong: Skull Island , you know it has been.

The magical scenery became the central set for the action film. Helicopters fly over the island mountains and eventually land on one lush islet, where a King Kong surprise awaits.

Rosy Cruise

We ventured to see the myriad of islets with a two-day, one-night Rosy Cruise . The boutique cruise company operates out of Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay, offering sweeping views of the beautiful scenery.  

Built in 2020, Rosy Cruise features 22 luxury suites that meet international standards. With a maximum of 52 guests, the ship provides an intimate sailing experience, and wandering the boat never feels crowded. 

The spacious cabins are draped in comfy bedding and decor with ensuite marble bathrooms and stand-alone bathtubs with showerheads. Western-style toilets ensure a comfortable experience.

Every suite features floor-to-ceiling windows and private balconies, offering incredible, up-close views of the monolithic islands and the lapping green water of the bay.

The steel vessel boasts five decks with an outdoor jacuzzi on the third deck, a restaurant on the fourth, and a sundeck on the fifth.

All meals are served in the spacious dining room, with bay views on three sides. On the fifth floor, the sundeck offers a place to relax, enjoy a drink at the Skybar, and capture 360 views of the natural beauty. 

Our overnight cruise began at Tuan Chau International Marina in Ha Long Bay, located in the Quang Ninh Province, about 100 miles east of Hanoi .

After a short wait at the Rosy Waiting Lounge in Terminal 2, we were led by our English-speaking cruise manager onto the dock.

We hopped on Rosy Cruise's tender (a small boat) and took our seats on flat benches there.

As the tender sped away from the busy harbor and docked boats, we got our first glimpses of the monolithic islands covered in green vegetation. 

Our home for the next few days stood out among the natural scenery. As we approached, the crew crowded the back of the ship, enthusiastically waving at us. We transferred from the tender to begin our cruise.

After dropping luggage in our cabin, we enjoyed a welcome buffet in the dining room, with various hot and cold dishes, including fresh fruit, pumpkin soup, stir-fried vegetables, rice, potatoes, and barbecue chicken breast.

With windows on three sides of the restaurant, we could admire the beauty and isolation as we glided by limestone cliffs.

After lunch, we dropped anchor on the east side of Cat Ba Island, allowing passengers their first opportunity to venture out independently.

A few hopped into kayaks, enjoying close-up views of the rugged islets surrounding us. We took the free time to enjoy our private balcony and the stunning scenery.

In the early evening, we ventured up to the sundeck for the first time, taking in the full-circle views. We enjoyed tropical cocktails, fresh fruit, and rice crisps, a local snack.

Note the cocktails were not included in our cruise price, but they did offer a 2-for-1 happy hour price. Mocktails, soft drinks, and iced tea were available as well.

The chaise lounge chairs were optimal for taking in the view, the limestone islands jutting up from the calming waters.

Cooking Demo

In the early evening, we got a taste of the local culture with a cooking demo for spring rolls, a traditional Vietnamese dish . We learned how to pack the spring roll paper and properly roll it, laughing at our messy attempts.

Smartly, a Rosy Cruise employee deep-fried the rolls for us. But we got to enjoy the spoils of our labor, dipping the rolls into a spicy, tangy sauce.

We ventured back down a floor for a five-course gourmet dinner. We started with a seafood soup and a green mango salad topped with shrimp.

A third course featured a steamed shrimp cocktail and a fried squid cake. The entree included grilled sea bass with passion fruit sauce and vegetables. Dessert was a spongy cake with bananas and a caramel sauce.

After dinner, guests could enjoy additional cocktails at the bar and try their hand at squid fishing. Tired, we skipped the unique experience of squid fishing. The next day, we heard they didn't have much luck.

Guests awake at sunrise had the opportunity to enjoy tai chi on the sundeck.

A lovely breakfast awaited us in the dining room, with fresh fruit, croissants, pastries, and pho. We took advantage of the local availability to savor dragon fruit, a pricey tropical sweet in the United States.

After tai chi and breakfast, guests could board a tender to visit nearby caves and karsts, a noted area for some of the Skull Island filming.

The small vessels allowed people to come closer to the islets, venturing further into the bay. The crisp air and calm water made it a lovely way to spend the afternoon. 

Warned we might get wet, we opted to skip the trip because of the chilly weather. We took advantage of the time to relax and enjoy the quiet of the boat and surroundings. 

However, we regretted the decision after seeing the cool pictures our friends took. In bamboo boats, locals rowed the guests into the Light Cave, letting them see the limestone landscape hollowed out by the water. 

A slight chill kept us from swimming, but several passengers opted to kayak around Lan Ha Bay.

A final five-course brunch was served in the dining room before we disembarked for the mainland.

We began with potato and beetroot soup. A green papaya salad with beef followed, a refreshing dish. Slivers of smoked duck breast with orange sauce came next.

And the main course was a cordon bleu-like chicken dish with a cheesy sauce, rice, and bok choy.

A sweet, delicious mousse with slices of watermelon and dragon fruit wrapped-up lunch on our last day.

Then, we headed back to the marina, taking final glances at our floating home flanked by the small islands made of limestone.

The travel time for our return shuttle ride to Hanoi was about two hours. Our roundtrip shuttles to/from Hanoi were organized through Rosy Cruise.

Cruising Notes

We met a few other people who chose the two-day trip, but the three-day cruise seems like a better value in terms of money and time.

Still, we loved the relaxed, leisurely trip. Sitting on our balcony as we sailed around Ha Long Bay, lounging on the sundeck with a cocktail—everyday worries and the frantic cacophony of the city noise washed away. It all made for an unforgettable experience in Vietnam.

The cruise itinerary can change because of weather and water conditions. In the warmer months, swimming is more widely available.

The cruise line also sometimes visits Three Peaches Beach and Viet Hai village, a remote fishing village in the jungle of Cat Ba National Park. 

Less than three percent of the islets are inhabited, with people living on 40 of the larger islands. Less than 2,000 Vietnamese citizens live in the Ha Long Bay area, making it a haven for isolated beauty. 

Despite the seclusion, wasps of daily life are visible. Other cruise ships sail past, and smaller fishing boats weave through the waters.

At one point during our trip, a woman in a small canoe paddled along our ship, selling water and snacks. We marveled at her transferring goods to balconies on a higher deck.

When To Visit

Our two-day cruise was part of a five-day group tour of Vietnam planned by friends. Regarding cruise options, we recommend the three-day cruise in Ha Long Bay for $345. 

This will give you one full day on the cruise ship to enjoy this unique environment.

The best time for a Ha Long Bay cruise is April and May when there's plenty of sunshine and blue skies. This is also peak season, so cruise boats will likely be full.

September to November offers cool, clear skies. It's gray and misty in winter, from December to March.

Our February trip was clear, but the sky was a flat, muted gray. We enjoyed our first cruise but would love to return for brilliant blue skies in late spring.
