What people love about Family Tours in Italy

I wouldn’t change a thing. This was our first overseas trip with kids (8 &11) so we were a little trepidatious. Exodus travel had everything planed out perfectly. It was the right blend of incredible activity and free time. Our guide Savy always had an amazing 6th sense for just when the kids needed an ice cream recharge. 2 Tori in Agerola was a great place to stay and beautiful. It’s just above all the craziness of the coast but still very convenient. Not having to drive in Naples and the Amalfi coast yourself is probably worth the cost lol.
Overall good, seemed a bit rushed with not enough time to absorb the sites.
Everything about this tour was outstanding! I have no comment only praise!

"TourRadar made our vacation so seemless and worry-free! They were very responsive, whenever I called with a question or concern. And, the hotels and tours they arranged for us were fantastic! I will be using TourRadar again on future international trips.

Intrepid Travel

"Enjoyed each of the destinations. The organised activities were excellent, in particular the wine tasting and olive oil tasting. The local guides were very good. The standard of accommodation was reasonable. The 3 hour wait for transfer at Naples could have been better organised either as a shorter wait or have baggage storage included to allow for a short visit to the city centre.

“The best gifts in life are experiences…”

… and by utilizing Italy4Real expertise you will have a lifetime of memories. I can’t recommend Italy4Real enough. We are repeat customers!

- Tammy Evans

tour group at colosseum in Rome

“The entire experience was EXACTLY what we hoped for and so much more”

This was the most amazing trip of our entire lives. Nothing compares to it. The care and detail and attention given to us the entire way through our France and England travel was amazing. Everything from the travel guides, accommodation hosts and even the drivers selected for us. Our trip planner at the travel company understood exactly our desires and wishes for our family vacation. We wanted to immerse our young children in our first time abroad into the cultures of the countries and villages we stayed. She carefully selected our hosts and guides. She worked with them so that they understood what we were looking for and each one delivered beyond all expectations. We were treated likes friends and family. We saw people and parts of the world we never wanted to leave. It felt like we made true friends and companions that we still discuss and talk about like we’ve known them forever even 6 months after our travel. I strongly recommend Italy4Real and Travel4Real for anyone that wants to experience a tailored made vacation they can never forget. If you value the time and money you’ll spend on your travels, then choose this travel agency as an investment because you will return with memories that may very well be one of the best highlights of your life.

“On a scale of 1-10, Italy4Real is a 20!”

Rem Malloy from Italy4Real planned this sister’s trip (4 of us) and it was incredible. Not only was the accommodations, food, and sights superb, the fact that Rem was so connected to his vendors and clients made it go flawlessly. Even at the end when our flights were cancelled due to a transportation strike, he was right there with his representative to help sort things out quickly. It was my sister’s first time to Italy and they all gave the trip a 10 plus ( with one of them giving it a score of 20!) We would highly recommend Italy4Real …in fact I did for a friend and they also had an amazing time and are re booking with Rem for next year. Ciao!

Best Spot for Babies

Families with babies tend to gravitate towards South Sardinia because of the baby-friendly beaches. The waters here are quite calm and the beaches are sandy instead of rocky, making a nice, safe place for babies to enjoy the coastline. The hotels in this area are used to accommodating babies as well, so you will be sure to find a  coastal Italy vacation that works for your family.

Best Spot for Toddlers

Aside from the natural beauty of  Tuscany , this particular spot is great for toddlers. It’s a medieval town that is surrounded by historic walls and is mostly free of traffic. It’s spacious so that the children can play, and there are plenty of cafes and restaurants to stop off at for a meal. Lucca is mostly flat, making it easy for the kids to walk and for you to push a buggy. Toddlers will love to play at nearby Pinocchio Park too.

Best Spot for Grade School-Aged Children

Grade school-aged kids will love the adventures that await them in  Sicily . There are family attractions everywhere, including puppet theatres, ice cream shops, swimming, castles, and fun rides. Hotels here will be more than happy to accommodate families, as will the restaurants and cafes.

Best Spot for Teens

Full of history and architecture,  Rome  is a great spot for teens to see their history lessons in action. They’ll be able to fill their days with pizza, pasta, and gelato, while Instagramming some of the most famous attractions in the world. Plus, there is plenty of shopping so that they can impress their friends with souvenirs when they get back home.

Tips for Traveling to Italy with Children

  • Many shops and restaurants in Italy are closed from 1 pm until 4 pm. Make sure that you pack some snacks or get the kids fed before the restaurants and cafes shut down.
  • Bring nice clothes for the kids . Italian families take pride in their clothing and the way they look. Make sure to bring some nice outfits along with the more casual ones.
  • Learn a few key phrases in Italian so that you avoid misunderstandings. If your children have any allergies or special needs, make sure to figure out how to convey that in the local language.
  • Pack any essentials like baby food, diapers, and formula. While you can get these things in Italy, they may be more expensive and you might not find the kind that you usually use.
  • Plan as much as possible. Make sure to work out the accommodation, transportation, and the itinerary of activities before you leave for Italy. Traveling can be hectic and it will be better for the kids if you keep your trip running smoothly.
  • Write down the name and address of your hotel as well as your phone number and put it in the pocket or backpack of each of your children. If you somehow get separated, your kids can give the information to someone so that they can find you.

Convertible Car Ride, Capri

Tauck exclusive – after hours at the vatican museums with your family, exploring the vatican museums with your family – and no crowds.

Founded by Pope Julius II in the early 1500s, the Vatican Museums display classical and religious works of art collected by the popes throughout the centuries. Combined with the Sistine Chapel, they're visited by around six million people a year, ranking among the most-visited art museums in the world. On your Tauck Bridges Exclusive, after-hours, guided visit, you and your family can explore the Candelabra Gallery, the Map Gallery, the Tapestries, and the Sistine Chapel… all without the usual crowds. So you'll be able to take your time to contemplate the inspirational treasures before you – including the spectacular biblical frescoes on the ceiling, which took Michelangelo four years to paint, standing on a scaffold... and changed the course of western art.

Ancient Pompeii... frozen in time

Back to 1st-century pompeii.

Pompeii was a prosperous Roman city with a population of approximately 27,000 souls until August 24, 79 AD – the fateful date when Mount Vesuvius erupted and completely buried it and its inhabitants under a blanket of volcanic ash. And there it sat until its discovery by an architect more than 1,500 years later. It would be another 150 years before some of the world's earliest archaeologists began excavating the site in the 1740s, slowly revealing a city frozen in time. Today, as you walk with a local guide among the remains of Pompeii's buildings and streets – still an active archaeological site – you'll get a firsthand glimpse of what life might have been like in the Roman Empire during the 1st century AD.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Italy; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact a consulate or embassy of Italy to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN:  If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

Please advise your Tauck Director on tour if you or the children traveling with you have any serious allergies. Also, adults may want to bring along children's aspirin or medicines as a precaution, as access to these may be limited.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally, no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Italy. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally, please check with an embassy or consulate of Italy to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion. Italy is home to innumerable historic buildings and sites, some dating from antiquity. Therefore, roads, walkways and architecture will present difficulties for some guests with physical limitations. You will encounter cobblestone streets, narrow passageways, and some steep and winding staircases.

In addition, coach travel along the many "Yellow Roads" on this tour are very windy and may cause you some discomfort if you are prone to motion sickness. If you are, we advise bringing motion sickness remedies or medication with you.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Expert Advice

diana

Some of what you think of as traditional Italian foods are actually American interpretations and not widely available there. Some examples are heavy cream sauces such as alfredo, spaghetti and meatballs, and chicken parmigiana (however, you may find these items in more tourist-oriented restaurants).

Italy Family Holiday

8 days | treat your family to a well-deserved slice of italy, from rome to the amalfi coast..

family tours to italy

Fall in love with Italy and rediscover the rewards of family travel on this carefully crafted itinerary designed with both you and your kids in mind. Journey from the ruins of Rome to the shadow of mighty Mt Vesuvius – watch little faces light up as a guide brings history back to life among the ancient ruins of Pompeii, sit back and relax with some Sangiovese while the youngsters frolic on the farmlands of an agriturismo, create treasured memories on a relaxing day trip to the elegant island of Capri, and know that family pizza night will never be the same after you take-away the tricks of the trade in a cooking demonstration in Sorrento. With all the logistics and essential experiences taken care of, treat yourself to some family time on this Italian adventure that does the job, so that you don’t have to.

Trip overview

Map of Italy Family Holiday including Italy

  • History class has never been this immersive. Explore the town frozen in time with a day and night in Pompeii, including a short hike to the summit of the volcanic Mt Vesuvius.
  • Italy is the perfect place for a family holiday. The famously laid-back atmosphere of sun-drenched southern coast is the perfect place to relax and spend some quality time together.
  • Learn the art of southern Italian pizza at a family-run agriturismo, then enjoy a glass of wine while the kids explore the farm full of friendly wild-rabbits.
  • Cruise across the Bay of Naples to Capri – a holiday destination favoured by the Roman emperors. With its glistening grottoes and little white houses with flower-filled gardens, it’s easy to see why.
  • Let your expert leader take the hassle out of family travel as they guide you through the history and highlights of Italy, so relax and hand over the responsibility – you deserve it.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll learn about our Intrepid Foundation partner, Cooperativa Coraggio. Donations help them regenerate 22 hectares of unused public land to create local jobs and produce organic food in Italy. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.
  • As there are potholes and cobblestones in many European cities, it's recommended that you leave any wheelie bags/cases at home and bring a backpack instead. As this is an eight-day trip, a large backpack should be enough to carry all of your belongings.
  • Italy is steeped in majestic old buildings, and often there are no lifts or escalators, particularly in some train stations or hotels. You may have to carry your bags up and down stairs, but the trek will be worth it.
  • Don’t let the heat keep you from exploring the world! Summer temperatures can be very high in Italy (over 40°C), which can make things uncomfortable. It’s important to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat, and drink plenty of water. Please carefully consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.
  • Make sure you pack some sturdy and comfortable shoes as there can be a lot of walking around the towns, ruins, and walking trails of this area.

Buongiorno! Welcome to Italy. Jam-packed with ancient ruins, yummy gelaterias and a colosseum made famous by that movie that came out before your kid’s were even born, Rome offers your family the perfect first taste of Italy. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm, until then why not go out and explore what this exciting city has to offer – there’s something for all ages. Check out the artistic masterpieces and the jaw-dropping Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, or step inside the arena and the ancient Colosseum, where gladiators once battled and wild animals were set loose. After the formalities of the meeting this evening, take the opportunity to introduce yourselves to your leader and the other families joining your tour. Perhaps head out for a group meal and toast with a slice of pizza (or a forkful of pasta) to the Italian adventure to come – when in Rome!

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information for each member of your family. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

If you are interested in visiting the Colosseum, we strongly suggest planning your visit before the welcome meeting and pre-booking your tickets at https://colosseo.it/en/opening-times-and-tickets/

If you are interested in visiting the Vatican Museums, we strongly suggest planning your visit before the welcome meeting and pre-booking your tickets at https://www.museivaticani.va/content/museivaticani/en.html

Jump on board a train today as you journey to one of the world’s most famous ancient sites – the preserved city of Pompeii (3 hours). On 26 August 79AD, nearby volcano Mt Vesuvius erupted spewing molten rock and ash all over the city, causing this thriving Roman trading centre to be frozen in time – an ancient tragedy that allows modern visitors to take a unique look at the lives of the Romans, and how they lived and worked 2000 years ago. Spend a few hours on a walking tour around Pompeii – you and your kids will be captivated by the incredible stories behind this ancient tragedy as your local guide brings the fascinating history to life. The finely preserved ruins include villas, temples, theatres and a once-bustling marketplace. Your hotel this evening is located very close to the archaeological site, so you won’t have far to go once you decide to call it a day.

  • Pompeii - Walking Tour with Local Guide

This morning with a private vehicle you will head to Mt Vesuvius for a short walk to the summit for staggering views over the Bay of Naples (45 minutes). Soak up the view and snap plenty of photos before walking across the cinders to the lip of the central crater (30 minutes). Don’t worry, although Mt Vesuvius is still considered to be an active volcano, the last eruption was in 1944 and there's no sign of recent volcanic activity. See first-hand the awesome power of the volcano that engulfed the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, then make the 30-minute descent. Continue to the Amalfi Coast town of Minori, a beloved holiday spot for thousands of years, and arrive around lunch time. With its fine piazzas, maze of old streets, sidewalk cafes and sparkling ocean, there is truly something for everyone here.

  • Mt Vesuvius - Crater Rim Walk & Summit Climb

The road to Mt Vesuvius is very windy, please take this into consideration if you or your child suffers from motion or car sickness.

Take a free day to explore Minori at your own (or your kids) pace. There are many beaches to choose from, though be aware the nicer they are the more crowded they will be (particularly during Summer from June to August). Hire a few deck chairs if you want to relax, or alternatively if you’re feeling more active, you can rent a paddle boat or kayak and explore the sea. The walk from Minori to Ravello is also beautiful and a great way to see the region, while it’s only about an hour each way, it is steep in parts and there are a lot of steps, so it’s moderately difficult. The views along the way more than make up for any huffing and puffing – but remember to pack plenty of water and sunscreen before leaving. This evening, why not head out to a local restaurant with your family and try the Minori speciality, scialatielli (thick ribbons of fresh pasta).

  • Minori Paddle Boat Rental or Kayak Hire - EUR10

Leave Minori in the rear-view mirror this morning and enjoy a stunning drive past mountains to an agriturismo, a working farm that also provides meals and accommodation. While you won’t be staying here tonight, you will get to spend 1.5 hours in gorgeous surrounds, sampling produce grown on site – a sure way to get your kids to eat their veggies! Continue to Sorrento, another beautiful resort town, famous for its lemons and surrounding plunging cliffs. Arrive early in the afternoon and enjoy free time to explore.

  • Minori - Tasting in Agriturismo

Head to the port this morning and board a lifted hydrofoil boat to Capri. Cruise across the glorious Bay of Naples for approximately 30 minutes before arriving in the holiday destination favoured by the Roman emperors. Capri’s dramatic rocky coastline is pierced by natural grottoes, while narrow roads wind inland through fragrant citrus groves, past villages of little white houses with flower-filled gardens. Though its unmatched setting and natural beauty means it’s popular with visitors, there are still many hidden corners and treasures to explore. On arrival, wander around the Marina Grande and the little town of Capri before taking a bus up to Anacapri to enjoy the best views of the island and bay from the top of Monte Solaro, reachable by cable car. Around mid-afternoon, take the 1-hour ferry back to Sorrento where you'll learn the secrets behind Italy's famous sweet treat in a gelato making demonstration, and perhaps indulge in some for a tasty dessert.

  • Sorrento - Capri Day Trip by Hydrofoil
  • Sorrento - Gelato Making Demonstration

There are many options for your free morning in this seaside town – make sure to grab a gelato (or three) while you’re here, Sorrento has some of the finest scoops in Italy. This afternoon you’ll get a hands-on lesson in crafting everyone’s favourite Italian dish – pizza! Enjoy a cooking demonstration and delectable dinner in an amazing location, an agriturismo with incredible views of Mt Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples. Eat, laugh and enjoy a glass of wine while the kids explore the farm alongside adorable wild rabbits. Enjoy southern Italian hospitality at its finest during your final night on this family adventure.

  • Sorrento - Pizza making demonstration and Dinner at Agriturismo

Top 10 places to visit in Italy with kids map

This list of the best places to visit in Italy with family is exhaustive and without a doubt I will add many more as we keep exploring.

However, it is a great starting point if you are planning a trip to Italy with kids and includes places we found excellent for kids and travel guides to the most famous destinations in Italy, all from a family angle!

The places are listed in a loose North to South order.

The Dolomites: the best places to visit in Italy with kids for outdoorsy families

The Dolomites are a stretch of gorgeous mountains in the North East of Italy and one of the best places in Italy for people who love hiking and outdoor pursuits.

Our family hiking in the Dolomites

They are an area of outstanding natural beauty, so much so that they entered the list of UNESCO World Heritage site and indeed, they are the picture-perfect mountains of your imagination!

The peaks here are high, and beautiful yet often accessible thanks to many hiking paths suitable for different ages.

The villages are beautiful and pristine, characterized by a fairy tale style of pointy roofs and flowery balconies that are peculiar to this area and for kids there are lots of activities and things to do ranging from hikes to water parks, open farms, crazy golf to exceptional skiing sloped in the winter.

The best things to do with kids in this area are:

  • Skiing (winter)
  • Mountain playgrounds
  • Animal encounters (Alpine petting zoos and farms)

The best time to go to the Dolomites December – February for skiing and late June- August for hiking.

Many locations on the Dolomites are great for families in summer and winter.

You can find our guide to the Dolomites with kids here.

Venice – the magical city on water your kids won’t believe is real

Venice is unique in the world and a wonderful city to visit with kids.

Gran Canal, Venice, Italy

Entirely developed on water, the city is magical for children and it is full of attractions and activities that will allow even little children to engage with this most peculiar city on water.

Parents of toddlers tend to worry about the safety of a city with canals instead of streets and with good reason.

However, all you need to make a visit to Venice safe and enjoyable with kids is some travel tips to know what to expect and how to tackle this peculiar geography!

Among the many things families will enjoy in Venice, there are the city’s stunning main landmarks such as St Mark’s Square and its pigeons, the option of gondola and boat rides, a boat trip to island of Burano and its colorful houses and kids’ activities such as

  • Kids scavenger hunt tour
  • Glass blowing class
  • Rowing class
  • Mask decorating class

You can find our guide to visiting Venice with kids here .

Venice is one of the best places to visit in Italy with kids in spring and fall especially, perfect for families who want to see one of Italy’s most famous and unique cities without renouncing kids’ fun!

Lake Garda – the picture perfect lake escape for families

Lake Garda is a large Lake in the Northeast of Italy and one of the most family-friendly areas in the entire peninsula.

Lake Garda with kids: Malcecine with promenade along the lake

Nestled between beautiful mountains, it has lovely small beaches perfect for small kids especially, plenty of cycling and hiking opportunities, many playgrounds, pretty towns for sightseeing and it is exceptionally well equipped to welcome families with young children.

The area has many family hotels and campsites with amazing facilities (some have water parks on site!) and has several theme parks that rollercoasters loving kids will adore!

Lake Garda has many lovely towns worth calling home for a while, each with a different atmosphere and entertainment options.

Best visited in summer for water activities; spring and fall for Gardaland.

You can find our guide to Lake Garda with kids here

Liguria – and its rainbow-colored towns that seem out of a fairy tale book

Liguria is a stunning region in the northwest of Italy that most overseas visitors know for two of its most famous locations: Cinque Terre and Portofino!

I adore both; however, there is more to Liguria than these two locations and, especially if traveling with kids, you may find that localities immediately outside these tourism magnets are even better for families!

Chiavari, Sestri Levante, Santa Margherita, and Levanto: these are all towns with wonderful beaches, services for families and a kid-friendly atmosphere and they are perfect for visiting their famous neighbors by train and boat. Among the very best places to visit in Italy with kids in summer !

Here, you can enjoy small-town life, swim, and explore and the excellent train system makes exploring remarkably easy!

In terms of activities, you can take boat trips, fishing trips, learn to make pesto, hike and cycle.

If you are curious about great family spots in Liguria, read here >>> our guide to Liguria with kids .

If you prefer to stay right in the famous places, that’s also easy in Liguria and we found even ‘child unfriendly’ Cinque Terre to is actually pretty child friendly indeed!

Cinque Terre is one of the most famous areas in the whole of Italy, known for colorful villages perched on cliffs plunging into the sea.

Children in Manarola looking at the view

They are not the first place that comes to mind when looking for family-friendly places in Italy however, they are wonderful and it is entirely possible to visit and enjoy them with little children in tow: they are stroller unfriendly but kids are very welcome here and well looked after!

They are a wonderful place to visit in Italy with kids because they mix beautiful and romantic atmospheres parents will love with fun things such (small) beaches and nice playgrounds.

Our family is especially fond of Monterosso and Manarola, as they are home to fabulous playgrounds!

Find our guide to Cinque Terre with kids here

Liguria is best visited in late spring, summer, early autumn.

Tuscany – the home of countryside and towns so beautiful your family will never want to leave

The region of Tuscany is one of the most visited in the whole of Italy and possibly the best place to visit in Italy with kids of all!

Italy countryside

I simply adore the place and have elected it as our go-to place for family summer holidays: we go there every year and we love it every time more.

Tuscany has absolutely anything and everything you may wish for in a family destination.

The Tuscany countryside is stunning and accessible.

Hilltop villages with car-free centers, exciting castles and scenic playgrounds abound, open farms are everywhere and you even have family-friendly wineries, truly showing how easy it is in Italy to have a multi-generational holiday that makes everyone happy!

The whole region is so well equipped to welcome overseas tourism, family activities in Tuscany abound!

Here, you can take cooking classes, gelato classes, go truffle hunting and cycling, visit child-friendly wineries, stay on a farm, go to waterparks (summer) and the beach… You can find here >>> a thorough list of the best activities for families in Tuscany !

Our kids in tuscany on a big bench

As well as the countryside Tuscany has stunning cities and a wonderful coastline with beautiful sandy beaches.

You can choose from a plethora of family-friendly accommodation options, from local guesthouses to all-inclusive resorts and campsites, which makes Tuscany a wonderful choice for all budgets and travel styles.

Tuscany offers its best in the good season. Come in spring, summer and early autumn to make the most of the countryside. Come in the summer for swimming. Check here >>> what to expect if visiting Tuscany with kids in winter

Read our guide to Tuscany with kids here.

Rome – the breathtaking home of the Colosseum and some of the most exciting historical sites for kids

Rome is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and one of my favorite places in Italy to explore with kids.

Yes, I am from Rome and we always go exploring: we never run out of things to see!

Rome with kids: Piazza Navona

There is just so much to see and do here, you can spend a lifetime in the city and never get sick of it or do the same things twice (although you will want to, some of the attractions are just so beautiful!).

Families with very young kids are likely to love the many parks of Rome, the Rome Children Museum Explora, the many piazzas perfect for running around and the fact that Rome main attractions are family and stroller-friendly.

Kids and adults can take cooking classes to learn to make pasta or pizza, get a taste of ancient Rome with a gladiators class (hilarious, it’s super fun) and of course enjoy sightseeing with scavenger hunts tours tailored for children or by getting shuttled around in a golf cart or a vespa with sidecar!

The only downside of Rome is that is has almost too much to see! This is why you need some tips!

You can find out introduction to Rome with kids here or check our my our sister site about Rome here (I am from Rome, it has all my tips!)

Rome is the best place in Italy to visit with kids who love cities and histories. It is at its best in late spring and early autumn.

Amalfi Coast – the stunning coastlines so beautiful local calls it ‘the Divine’

The Amalfi Coast is a stunning stretch of coastline in the South of Italy and one of our favorite places to visit in Italy with kids, especially in spring and summer.

Amalfi town view from the water

The area is mostly known for a scenic drive that connects the several towns of this area offering sweeping views over cliffs plunging into the Mediterranean.

However, it is also highly enjoyable for kids in the good season thanks to its wonderful sea and climate and the many opportunities for boat trips, hiking, and exploring.

The tops things to do here include taking boat trips (to the towns and to Capri), learn to make pizza or cook a real Italian meal, hike, visit the paper museum in Amalfi, take a food tour in Sorrento and swim!

Need to know: The Amalfi Coast doesn’t have indoor entertainment for kids; There are no indoor play centers, malls, or children’s museums. Therefore, I recommend coming here with kids in pool/swimming season only: the sea is big attraction here and you need the weather for it!

The Amalfi Coast is a little like Cinque Terre, in the sense that not all areas are equally child-friendly. However, we discovered many that are such as Minori and, to an extent, Amalfi town itself.

Read our guide to the Amalfi Coast with kids here .

Puglia – the stunning heel of Italy that will charm adults and kids alike

Puglia, the heel of Italy, is a stunningly beautiful region and one of the best places to visit in Italy with kids of all ages if you love small towns, mellow atmospheres and stunning coastlines.

Locorotondo Puglia Italy

A long region, it has a lot to offer.

Its coastline is a vision of beautiful pristine sandy beaches and blue waters, its towns are a picture perfect delight of different architectural styles ranging from baroque churches to the unique trulli of Alberobello , the food is out of this world and the welcome warm and friendly.

Families who want a sea and sun vacation in Italy will find plenty of places to call home for a while here ( Salento area is great to just relax!) however, it is also easy to explore Puglia by car.

Kids are likely to adore the place: the beaches are vast and family-friendly, the towns often car-free and if you get to see the trulli , do expect a wow from little ones – they truly look like fairy homes!

In terms of activities, in Puglia you can visit Fasano Zoo, Castellana Grotte, you can learn to make orecchiette (local pasta), papier mache (in Lecce, it is a local craft), take boat trips, swim (summer) and enjoy the beautiful farms of this region.

This is the best place in Italy for families who want to mix sightseeing and time at the beach

You can read here >>> all our tips to visit Puglia with kids

Puglia is best in: summer for beach time; spring and autumn for a road trip.

Sicily – the stunning island where natural wonders, history and beaches meet

Sicily closes this list because of its location to the South of Italy but don’t this is very much a last but not least scenario!

Sicily is stunning and one of the best places to visit in Italy with kids if you are hoping for a vacation that puts together sightseeing, time at the beach, culture and also the tasting of incredible food!

taormina theater with my daugther in a yellow sweater on one of the audience seats

Sicily is all this and much more!

Visiting Sicily with kids is easy: the island has a very family friendly atmosphere and many lovely kid-friendly beaches perfect for swimming and sandcastle making.

Older kids will be excited by the presence of Mount Etna, an active volcano, and the whole family will enjoy the many pretty towns and archaeological sites that dot the island.

Sicily is a work and there is so much to see and do here, your only issue will be prioritizing what to see! Maybe we can help you make up your mind!

You can find our guide to Sicily with kids here

Sardinia – perfect beach destination in Italy for families

If you are looking for a perfect beach destination for families in Italy, you should head to Sardinia.

white sandy beach in Sardinia

"Using you really allowed us to enjoy the trip. According to my husband, you removed every possible area where there could have been friction. I really think that made it so much easier for us (mostly me) and gave us time to focus on the stuff that we wanted to focus on (like finding the best Gelato). The app was amazing at keeping all the info together. You recommended things I never would have thought to do on my own."

She chose dinner and lunch places for every day that exceeded all expectations and would never have been found by us. Even our two-year-old had so much fun! From cooking lessons in our villa to truffle hunting with dogs, winery tours and Florence city treasure hunts and just days by the pool, we were entertained the whole time. We even had her plan an extension on the trip for just my husband and I for our anniversary and she picked the most romantic place to stay and special dinner in our lives. And best of all, the stress was eliminated by Linda and Ciao Bambino, so this was the first Europe trip we came home from without needing a vacation after our vacation!"

–Symsack Family Italy Trip

"Overall, the trip was fabulous, and we really appreciate how much your planning improved our time over there. We would absolutely recommend your services to anyone in the market! … Hopefully you can tell that we had a blast on our trip. We’ve been raving about it since we got back. "I will never plan an international trip without Kristen’s and Ciao Bambino’s help. She took the time to ask lots of questions and knew what was important to us and the trip aligned with that perfectly! She was able to talk me through traveling with a young child and a teenager and planned things that they could both enjoy on the trip, which isn’t easy. It was worth every penny for the peace of mind that I had and knowing that everything I needed was in the itinerary app was key. I had no worries about having to schedule or coordinate anything. We spent two weeks together making memories that will last a lifetime!"

"My trip was extraordinary. Linda was incredible to work with and I could not have been more pleased. Thankful!"

–Goodrich Family Trip

"I can't begin to express the gratitude we feel towards Linda and the amazing work she does at Ciao Bambino. My wife and I were fortunate to make her acquaintance as we were planning a 14-day trip to Italy. It was our first trip to the country, and I was uneasy about some of the logistics. About five minutes into our initial call with Linda her vast experience began to shine through. Whenever a question or concern came up during the planning process, or while we were on our trip, she would simply say, "Leave it with me", and came up with a brilliant suggestion. She truly provides an excellent service. Investing with Linda was the best decision we made, and we are excited to work with her again!"

Budgeting Your Trip

With some research and careful consideration, you can create a trip that fits your budget, travel style, and interests.

Italy can be an expensive destination.

But there are ways to save money without sacrificing the quality of your trip.

Consider the following:

  • Travel during the shoulder season (spring or fall) instead of the peak season (summer) to save money on flights and accommodations.
  • Look for budget-friendly accommodations, such as hostels or Airbnb rentals.
  • Take advantage of free activities, such as visiting public parks and museums.
  • Use public transportation instead of taxis or private transfers.

To help you budget for your trip, use a table like the one below to compare costs for different destinations and activities.

Choosing Your Destinations

Italy has so many destinations to choose from.

So it’s important to narrow down your options based on your interests and travel style.

Here are some things to consider:

  • How much time do you have? If you only have one week, consider sticking to one or two destinations. If you have ten days or more, you can add more destinations to your itinerary.
  • What are your interests? Are you interested in art and history? Food and wine? Outdoor activities? Beaches ? Italy has something for everyone, so choose destinations that align with your interests.
  • What is your travel style? Do you prefer big cities or small towns? Do you like to stay busy or take things slow? Do you like to stay in one place or move around frequently?

Below are some popular destinations to consider:

  • Rome: Home to iconic landmarks like the Colosseum and the Vatican and some of the best food and wine in Italy.
  • Florence: A city known for its art and architecture, including the famous Duomo and the Uffizi Gallery.
  • Venice: A unique city built on water, with romantic canals and stunning architecture.
  • Tuscany: A region known for its rolling hills, vineyards, and charming towns like Siena and San Gimignano.
  • Cinque Terre: A series of five colorful towns along the Italian Riviera, known for their hiking trails and stunning views.

Determining Your Travel Time

When planning your Italy itinerary, it’s important to consider travel time between destinations.

Italy has an excellent train system that makes it easy to get around, but some destinations are further apart than others.

  • How much time do you want to spend traveling? If you want to minimize travel time, choose destinations that are closer together.
  • Are there any events or festivals you want to attend? For example, August is a popular time to visit Italy because of the Ferragosto holiday, but it can also be crowded and expensive.
  • What is the best time to visit Italy? Spring and fall are generally considered the best times to visit Italy because of the mild weather and fewer crowds.

Don’t forget to leave some flexibility in your schedule for unexpected discoveries and experiences.

Italian Cuisine

Regional specialties.

Each region of Italy has a unique cuisine, and it’s worth exploring as many as you can during your visit.

In the north, you’ll find rich, hearty dishes like risotto and polenta.

In the central regions, pasta is king, with specialties like carbonara and cacio e pepe.

.In the south, seafood takes center stage, with dishes like spaghetti alle vongole and fritto misto.

Some of the best restaurants in Italy are family-run trattorias that serve traditional dishes made with local ingredients.

Don’t be afraid to ask your server for recommendations or try something new.

Wine Tasting

Italy is home to some of the world’s best wines.

As such, wine tasting is a must-do activity during your visit.

From the crisp whites of the north to the full-bodied reds of the south, there’s a wine for every palate.

Many wineries offer tours and tastings, and some even have restaurants on-site where you can enjoy a meal paired with their wines.

If you’re not sure where to start, ask your hotel or a local tour operator for recommendations.

Gelato Sampling

Gelato Sampling

No trip to Italy is complete without sampling some gelato.

This creamy, flavorful treat is a national obsession.

So, don’t be surprised to find gelaterias on every corner.

Look for gelaterias that make their gelato on-site using fresh, natural ingredients.

Some of the best gelaterias in Italy are small, family-run shops that have been around for generations.

During my visit to Italy, I made it a point to try gelato in every city I visited.

My favorite was a small shop in Rome that made their gelato with fresh fruit and cream.

It was so good I went back for seconds.

Accommodation Options

Choosing hotels.

Hotels are a great choice if you’re looking for comfort and convenience in your Italy stay.

The best hotels in Italy range from luxurious five-star resorts to budget-friendly options.

If you’re looking for the best hotels in Italy, consider staying in Rome, Florence, or Venice.

These cities have some of the most iconic hotels in the country.

Consider factors like location, amenities, and price when choosing a hotel.

Want to be close to the city center or in a quieter neighborhood?

Or do you need a pool or a gym?

Perhaps you are willing to pay extra for a spa or a restaurant?

Make a list of your must-haves and use it to narrow down your options.

Renting Villas

If you’re traveling with a group or looking for a more private and authentic experience, renting a villa might be a good option.

Villas are typically located in the countryside or smaller towns and offer more space and privacy than hotels.

They’re also a great choice if you’re planning to stay in one place for an extended period.

Staying in Hostels

On a tight budget or looking to meet other travelers?

Staying in a hostel might be a good option.

Hostels offer shared or private rooms and usually have a common area where guests can socialize.

They’re also a great choice when traveling solo and looking for a more social experience.

When choosing a hostel, consider factors like location, price, and atmosphere.

Do you want to be close to the city center or in a more residential area?

A party hostel or a more laid-back one?

Make sure to read reviews and check the amenities before booking.

Getting Around Italy

Public transportation.

Italy’s public transportation system is extensive and reliable, making it an excellent option for budget-conscious travelers.

Buses and trains are the most common forms of public transportation.

They can take you to most destinations throughout the country.

If you’re planning to use public transportation frequently, consider purchasing a regional or national pass .

These passes can save you money and make it easier to travel around Italy.

Renting a Car

Renting a car in Italy gives you the freedom to explore the country at your own pace.

But it’s important to keep in mind that driving in Italy can be challenging.

This is especially the case in larger cities like Rome and Florence.

If you do decide to rent a car, make sure to familiarize yourself with Italy’s traffic laws and be prepared for narrow roads and aggressive drivers.

Train Travel

Train travel is one of the most popular ways to get around Italy for a good reason.

Italy’s train system is efficient, affordable, and covers most of the country.

If you plan to travel by train, consider purchasing a Eurail pass .

This pass allows you to travel on most trains in Italy and other European countries for a set period.

Taking a tour is a great way to see the sights in Italy without worrying about transportation.

Many different types of tours are available, from walking tours to food tours to wine tours.

Traveling with your family?

Look for tours specifically designed for families with children.

These tours often include activities that are fun and engaging for kids.

When to plan your family trip to Italy

Italy is a family friendly destination which is pleasant to visit all year round. However, the period when you decide to go really depends on what you prefer to see and do while you are there.

Summers are great on the coast, and if you are planning on visiting the beautiful Italian beaches , or one of the Italian islands , then it is a great time to visit. However it can sometimes be uncomfortable for younger kids in the bigger cities as it gets very humid.

Winters can get cold. You may encounter rain, wind, or even snow, which could be a good or bad thing depending on what your plans are.

Italy with Kids Bergamo Snow

When planning your Italy family holiday note that peak season is between June – August. This is the European Summer and during this period, Italy attracts tourists from around the world.

If you travel to Italy during peak time, accommodation will be the most expensive. It is also extremely hot during these months, and in August Italians usually leave the big cities to holiday on the beach.

Because of this, you may find some attractions closed during this time. This is especially true around the 15th August, which is the mid Summer festa.

In general, unless you are spending your whole trip at the beach, I recommend if you are travelling to Italy with kids, it is best to go during the shoulder season, either April-May or September-October, which are the Italian Spring/Autumn months. Most of the time days are warm and sunny, but not scorching hot, with little rain.

If it is a family beach holiday you are after, then summer is great too because you can always cool off in the sea.

Best places to visit in Italy with kids

Although it looks small on the map, Italy is actually quite large and has so much to see and do.

Italy map Travel with Kids

From Northern Italy to the very South can take around 10-12 hours by car or train. Even on a fast train getting from Rome to Venice is around 4 hours so depending on how long you have you may need to choose to visit either the North or the South regions.

For families who have only a week, choosing a couple of places, or one region to explore is best. If you have longer, the options are endless, just keep the distances in mind when you plan your trip to Italy with kids.

Best Places to visit in Northern Italy with Kids

From the capital of Rome and all of the best places in Northern Italy

Rome with kids

Colosseum things to do in Rome with kids

Kick of your Italy family holiday in the Italian capital Roma which is in the middle of the country! Being the capital, most international flights will arrive in Rome, so it is worth stopping for a few days.

Rome is one of the must-see places in Italy for people of any age but there is so much to do in Rome with kids too.

What to see and do: Explore the famous Colosseum , test your children on the Mouth of Truth, walk the gorgeous Spanish Steps, or one of our family favourites, take a picnic and have a rickshaw ride around the beautiful Villa Borghese, it will be one of the highlights for the kids.

If you have enough time, take a day trip to Orvieto or the Monstor park in Bomarzo! There really is so much to do in Rome. See our full guide : Rome with Kids>>>

Local tip: Buy your tickets for the Colloseum early, or book a tour to skip the lines. It can be quite busy, especially if you travel to Rome during peak periods. Make sure you take a look at these Day Trips from Rome if you are have time.

Florence with kids

Florentine Markets - Florence with kids

Firenze is an art lovers dream and a gorgeous city to visit for any traveller. Travelling around Florence with kids is quite easy as it the city is quite small when you compare to Rome or Milan and most things can be seen and done on foot.

There are many family friendly restaurants and cafes too and Florence makes a great base to visit other nearby towns and the Tuscan countryside!

What to see and do: Climb the famous Duomo, cross the “Ponte del vechio” (bridge), visit the Uffizi Museum , or just let the kids run around one of the piazzas or take a ride on the antique carousel. Take a pizza making class or for those who are up for it take a walk up to the Piazzale Michaelangelo at sunset to see a view of the entire city. Kick back and have a drink while the kids burn off their energy.

See our full guide: Things to do in Florence with kids>>>

Local Tip: Head to the big food market where you can buy some delicious Italian produce for fresh lunches. Do yourself a favour and order one of the huge paninis stuffed full of your favourite fillings.

Lucca with kids

family tours to italy

Out of the big cities, and into the Tuscan countryside, you can soak up the Italian culture and breathe some of that fresh Italian air in the gorgeous city of Lucca . It is a great alternative to staying in Florence if you prefer a smaller town, but still close enough to visit on a day trip.

Less widely known and very underrated, the historical centre is surrounded by thick tall walls that date back to the Middle Ages. It is a beautiful spot to base yourself on your Italian family holiday because of it is easy to day trip to a lot of other places.

What to see and do:  Explore the historical centre and make sure to check out the Roman amphiteater. If you are up for it, or the kids need to burn off some energy climb one of Lucca’s tours, the largest is La Torre Guinigi. You can also hire bikes for the day and ride around the city walls or head outside, there are some gorgeous views of the Tuscan country side and is definitely one of the main highlights in Lucca. See our full guide : Lucca with Kids>>>>

Local tip: If you plan your Italy family holiday during the Summer make sure to check out the Lucca Summer Festival.

Pisa with kids

Pisa trip Italy with Kids

The city of Pisa is a must see when in Italy with kids even just for the cheesy photo! You can’t travel to Italy with kids and not visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa .

You don’t have to stay there, in fact I don’t recommend it. It can make an easy stopover while you are visiting Florence or Lucca as it is just a short train ride from each place, and you only need a few hours there. You can even make a stop on the train and get back on with the same ticket.

What to see and do:  The leaning tower of Pisa is the main attraction and there isn’t really much more to do in this city so a quick stopover is fine. It will be a highlight and your kids will love taking funny photos in front the tower and having that memory of their Italy family holiday forever.

This tower is truly impressive and when most people see it for the first time they can’t believe their eyes. “It really does lean” I have heard over and over again! Yes, it really does lean, and it is unbelievable to be able to see it in person.

Local Tip: If you want to climb the Leaning Tower of Pisa get your tickets as soon as you arrive as only a certain amount of people can go up at the same time. While you wait you can take your funny photos of the tower.

Venice with kids

Gondola ride Venice with Kids

Ahhh Venice, the city where getting lost is all part of the experience of your Italian family holiday. It is one of our top places to visit in Italy with kids as it there is nowhere in Italy like it, in fact you won’t find anywhere like it in the world!

Tell your kids the city is like a giant maze and wonder through all of the tiny cobbled streets. Get yourself lost in the moments, stopping for gelato and pizza. Families with kids of all ages will enjoy this gorgeous city on water.

What to see and do: Chase the pigeons in St Marks square, watch the glass blowing in Murano and finish your day with a relaxing gondola ride exploring the gorgeous city of Venice which will be a definite hit with the whole family. See our full guide: Things to do in Venice with Kids>>>

Local Tip:  The streets are gorgeous but they exactly pram friendly so if you can, use a baby carrier for your little ones. Or at least a light easy stroller.

Cinque Terre with kids

Vernazza Cinque Terre Italy family holiday with kids

Still one of my highlights of Italy, and I have lost count how many times I have walked the stunning coastline of the five villages which make up the Cinque Terre.

It makes a great stop on your Italy family holiday if you are an active family and you love the coast.

Set up on the North West coast of Italy, these five  beautiful little fishing villages are built up on the coast and are accessible on foot or by train. You can stay on the outskirts in either Levanto or Laspezia for easy transport, but the real experience is staying in one of the villages themselves.

What to see and do: While travellers do come to see the five villages, the village hike is the main attraction. Depending on your fitness level, there are different trails, however the coastal trail is the most popular for families.

To complete the coastal walk it takes around 5-6 hours but the best part for those with young children is that you don’t have to do it all by foot, you can take the train through to each village as well. It isn’t the easiest of hikes, but young kids can easily walk half way and the train trip is all part of the fun too!

Local Tip: Buy your pass before you arrive, you can find more information about the Cinque Terre on the Parco Nationale website.

Lago di Garda with kids

Gardaland - Italy with kids

You have probably heard of Lake Como, where the famous George Cloony has a property but there are a couple of other impressive Italian lakes that are just as good, including Lago di Garda which aren’t too far from the famous city of Milan . The Italian lakes are a great place to stop in Italy with kids as you can do as much or as little as you want.

What to see and do: Gardaland on Lago di Garda is one of the biggest theme parks in Italy and kids will love this place! It’s like a mini Disney Land in Italy. You can also take a boat ride and find numerous little lake side villages to visit and the kids will love a boat ride around the lake.

Local Tip: Base yourself in one of the little villages on Lago di Garda and you can even sneak in a day trip to Verona to see the famous Romeo and Juliette balcony.

Best places to visit in the South of Italy with Kids

If you and your kids want to see the real Italy, make time to travel down the southern part of the country. We lived in the South for 3 years so got to experience quite a bit of it with our kids.

Once you have seen the main sights that everyone comes to see, come and experience the real Italian culture, the best food, and the best beaches in Italy . Southern Italy will be a highlight of your Italy family holiday and will leave a long lasting impression.

Amalfi Coast with Kids

Positano italy with kids

The Almalfi Coast is one of Italy’s most popular tourist destinations. However because most of the towns are built up on cliffs it isn’t the most kid friendly place for younger ones. It is still definitely a place to visit though and there is lots to see and do for older kids.

If you visit with younger kids I recommend staying in Sorrento as the accommodation options are easier to access. If you base yourself in Sorrento rather than on the actual Amalfi coast you will be able to explore the area easier as Sorrento is well connected by public transportation.

What to see and do: Walk around Sorrento’s historical centre, then take a bus ride to Almalfi or Positano. A boat ride is a must to the Isle of Capri. If you are keen, and love a bit of history you can take a day trip to see the famous ruins of Pompei , or even head to Naples f or some of the best pizza in Italy!

Local Tip: Make sure to choose accommodation wisely. Many bnbs and hotels are perched on cliffs, and while they have an amazing view, the climb to get there isn’t the easiest with young kids. There are plenty of hotels on the main street in Sorrento with easy access to everything you need.

Alberobello with Kids

Alberobello Puglia, Italian family holiday

Like stepping into a fairy tale, Alberobello is a gorgeous little town in central Puglia. This historical town is lined with Unesco Heritage Listed Trulli Houses which are limestone houses with white coned roofs that date back to the 14th Century.

You can actually stay in these houses which gives the full Pugliese experience and will be a hit with the kids too!

What to see and do: Explore the historical centre, and taste some of the Pugliese cuisine. Then visit the nearby Castellana Caves and beachside towns like Polignano al Mare and gorgeous Monopoli. See our full guide : Puglia with Kids>>>

Local Tip: Check out some of the cafes with a terrace where you can see a full view of the city from the top. Simply breath-taking! Make sure to visit the Fasano Zoo not too far away where you can drive through and feed the animals from your window!

Tropea with Kids

best-beaches-italy-tropea

The heart of Calabria, down on the toe of the boot of Italy, Tropea is perfect for beach lovers, nature lovers, and families travelling Italy with kids who want to experience the “real Italy”.

What to see and do: Wonder through the historical city where you can find numerous churches and ancient buildings. View the Santa Maria Della Isola from the balcony, or just spend the day on the gorgeous beach. Many boat rides leave from Tropea to visit Capo Vaticano and the Aeolian Islands too. See our full guide : Calabria with Kids>>>

Local Tip: Hire a car and visit the nearby Capo Vaticano beaches, they will take your breath away!

Taormina with Kids

You can find the little town of Tauromina perched on a hill about 250 meters above sea level on the East coast of Sicily, right down the South of Italy.

What to see and do: Explore the old town, and visit the Greek theatre, or take a cable car down to Isola Bella where you can relax on the pebble beach.

The town has the most incredibly scenic views and makes a great base if you want to visit Mt Etna, Italy’s active volcano. For older kids and teens you can climb Mt Etna, for younger kids wondering around at the bottom is just as fun!

Local Tip: Head out for breakfast with a view and taste the Sicilian specialty, the cannoli. A delicious sweet ricotta filled pastry that is to die for. See our full guide : Sicily with Kids>>>

Family friendly places to stay in Italy with kids

When you plan to travel Italy with kids, it is easier to choose a few main destinations where you can stay a few nights each, rather than bouncing around every night to new places. This will give your kids a bit of stability, and you can do day trips to the surrounding areas.

Here are a few examples of best places to stay in Italy with kids:

Rome: If you stay in Rome for a few nights you can not only see the big city, but can take a day trip to Orvieto, or even Naples on a fast train.

Lucca: This beautiful town in Tuscany and the perfect base for visiting Florence, Pisa, and the Chianti region.

Venice: You can stay in Venice and visit Mirano, or even the Dolimites if you are keen to see the mountains.

Sorrento: Sorrento is a great base to visit the Almalfi coast. Take a day trip to see the ruins of Pompei, have a pizza in Naples, or take a boat ride over to Capri.

Alberobello: A great base when visiting Puglia and such a beautiful spot. From here you can visit Polignano, Astuni and other surrounding towns.

Tropea: If you are heading to Calabria I suggest basing yourself in Tropea.

Getting around Italy with Kids on your Family Holiday

Train: If you plan to visit the big cities on your Italian family holiday, the easiest way to travel is by train. Italy has an extensive network of fast-speed inter-city trains and regional services that connect larger cities as well as smaller towns. The trains are quite comfortable and kids are able to walk around too. If you book a hotel near the train station it is quite easy to move around. You can see the train schedules and prices at Trenitalia.com

Car: If you plan on visiting a a southern region such as Puglia, Calabria, or even the Almalfi Coast, I suggest hiring a car as you will have the flexibility to move around where you want when you want as public transport isn’t as easy in these parts of Italy. You can hire a car in most major cities, a popular company is Europecar.com

Plane: If you are set on seeing the North and South of Italy and don’t  have a lot of time, there are budget flights on Blu-Express ,  Easyjet and Ryanair , which fly between the main cities. Just take care to look at the baggage fees so you don’t get caught out at the airports.

Eating in Italy with kids

Italian Food southern italy with kids

One important thing to note when heading out for a meal in Italy with kids, is that Italians eat late so you may need to adjust your routine.

Don’t expect to arrive at a restaurant before 7pm. Most don’t start serving food until after 8pm. Italians eat quite late and it is common to see kids still up until midnight in a restaurant during Summer.

Most restaurants in Italy accommodate for kids, but don’t expect the average kids meals such as nuggets and chips. Italian kids eat what adults eat, just smaller portions.  You can find Pizza and Pasta almost everywhere though and you can never have enough pizza on your Italian family holiday!

If you are heading out for the day check out one of the local markets where they will make you a “panino” (sandwich or roll). You can always find fresh cheese, salami, olives and other toppings along with “Pizza al taglio” ( pizza by the slice), and “arancini” (rice balls.)

Enjoy your Italy Family Holiday!!!!

Travelling through Italy with kids is fairly easy and once you visit this beautiful country, your whole family will fall in love. So now that you have all of this information to help with your Italy family holiday, what are you waiting for?

Family Tours of Italy

Italy Beyond the Obvious can create a personalized trip of a lifetime to Italy that you just can’t create on your own. Our travelers rave about our meticulously crafted custom Italy trips, and having now created more than 300 personalized Italy vacations, we are proud to say we have not had a single big complaint. Our business model is that of a consultant, not a travel agent, therefore we charge fees for our services rather than work from commissions ( contact us to find out how this actually saves you money).

Tell us about your family

Often, parents tell us that if the kids are happy, everyone is happy! Kids of different ages have different needs, and while of course we’ll create whatever you want, we do have some advice.

family tours to italy

Travel to Italy with an infant

If you’re bringing your infant to Italy, we know you’ll be bringing a lot of stuff. You’ll need a stroller, a diaper bag, a feeding bag (bring your own formula), extra clothing for the baby, maybe a car seat, and of course your own stuff! It’s virtually impossible to travel light, so we don’t recommend changing hotels frequently. Also, you cannot convince a baby to adjust to the time difference – you’ll need to expose him or her to natural light, try to get them on an Italian eating schedule, and let them adjust naturally. But this can be a great age to travel! Infants are portable so you can see and do a lot while baby sleeps in the stroller or in the baby bjorn.

Travel to Italy with toddlers

Italians love toddlers and toddlers love Italy! They’ll be bored in museums – even the Vatican museums or the amazing Uffizi gallery – but they’ll love chasing pigeons in Italy’s car-free squares and running along pedestrian streets. They’ll love the pasta and the pizza and the gelato, and they’ll have a ball riding the train. They’ll love that they can touch and feel fountains and marble and climb on (some) ruins, and see real castles. We usually don’t recommend taking them to Venice where they might try to escape into the crowds or stress you out as you picture them falling into a canal.

family tours to italy

Travel to Italy with school aged children (ages 5 to 10 or so)

Italy is perfect for school-aged children. A good guide can bring history to life for them, and they’ll learn about the Romans, the Etruscans, the Medieval times, or the Renaissance by exploring, touching, tasting, seeing, and playing – not by being lectured at. They’ll love the castles (they can sleep in one if you’d like!) in Tuscany, the boats in Venice, the gladiators in Rome, and of course all the pasta, pizza, and gelato. They’re at a great age: they still listen to their parents and they have enough energy to be out and about with you all day, although sometimes they don’t make it to the Italian dinnertime of 8 pm (we book early dinners for families).

Travel to Italy with tweens and teens

Sometimes traveling with a teenager requires a special approach. We get requests from parents whose teenagers are too cool to go on a family vacation, but they’re too young to stay home alone for two weeks. We create trips that teenagers love! We book Ferrari test drives (they sit in the back), balloon flights over Tuscany, vespa tours (on the back with a driver), rafting excursions, and we find accommodations that might give them a little independence – maybe there’s a great gelateria up the street that they can walk to on their own. And, if you’re open to it, your 14+ year old can participate in wine tastings.

Travel to Italy with adult children

We get requests from parents who have a very narrow time frame for their Italy vacation, because it’s based on the window between when one child finishes school and when another child starts a new job. Coordinating the schedules of adults is not easy, and often, these trips are some of the last family vacations before the kids get married and start families of their own. These trips are essentially planning for a group of adults – the kids have come full circle and are no longer too cool to travel with Mom & Dad. Not only that, they very much appreciate being taken to Italy.

Best Rome Tours with Kids

Free walking tours in rome italy, city walking tour.

First time visiting Rome? Traveling on a budget? No problem, the  Free Walking Tours of Rom e  is the perfect tour for you and your family.

This two-hour city tour meets at the Spanish Steps in the city center twice during the peak season. They offer morning and afternoon tours.

In the morning, your English-speaking tour guide will lead a group of no more than 20 through the historic center. Along the way, they will provide a brief overview of ancient Roman history and modern daily life.

Some of the sights you will visit date back to the Roman Empire, including the Column of Marcus Aurelius, the Temple of Hadrian, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and Castel Sant’Angelo with a view of St. Peter’s Basilica.

If you take the afternoon tour, expect to explore different landmarks like an ancient Roman Aqueduct, the Trevi Fountain, the Roman Forum, the Imperial Forums, and outside the Colosseum.

Most major European cities offer free walking tours where you can tip your guides at the end of the tour. Due to their huge popularity, Rome Free Walking Tours requires a deposit of €1 to confirm your booking. We recommend a tip in cash or card once the tour is finished!

These cheap tours are a great way to see the highlights of a new city and welcome travelers of all ages.

Best Food Tours Rome

Pizza making class.

Booking a pizza-making class on a vacation to Rome is a no-brainer. This local, unique experience is something the entire family (and your taste buds) will enjoy! Rome4Kids Tours runs some of the best family tours in the city. They offer both private and group pizza-making classes in Rome for kids .

This one-hour workshop is located in a real pizzeria near Piazza Navona so it’s in a super central location. The class is held twice a day around lunch and dinner time. It is the perfect amount of time for the attention spans of young children. They will love learning new cooking skills in a fun, hands-on way.

Drinks are included and, of course, you get to eat your creation at the end!

Gelato Making Class

Everyone knows the best way to enjoy pizza is to follow it with a scoop or two of gelato afterward. Learn how to make authentic Italian gelato (different from ice cream!) in this highly-rated,  private gelato-making class .

Private classes allow the chef to give you special attention. Families will have ample time to ask questions about the gelato-making process. Everyone can wear fun aprons and chef hats and try a second gelato flavor in addition to the one you will make together.

Rome Culinary Food Tour

A walking tour of the city’s top culinary delights is one of the best Rome tours you can take, with or without kids. Secret Food Tours runs fantastic food tours all over the world. We highly recommend adding their top-rated Rome food tour  to your vacation.

Sample Roman pasta, authentic cannoli, lots of ham, salami, cheese, fresh pizza, gelato, and a signature secret dish. The company offers a private option which is a sensible idea when traveling with younger children. You can easily skip visiting coffee shops for espressos and wine pairings if you would prefer.

This tour lasts over three hours, which is great value! Another option is a tour with a private guide. This will allow you to travel at your own pace to make sure the whole family has a great time.

History Tours in Rome

Gladiator school.

Rome’s Gladiator School  is exactly as awesome as it sounds. We are sure your kids will be talking about this experience for years.

Known as  Gruppo Storico Romano  in Italian, your children can take part in a two-hour lesson where they will learn how to become gladiators. They will be just as fierce as those who fought in the Colosseum during the times of Ancient Rome.

Passionate child-friendly guides with years of experience will teach your kids about the history of gladiatorial fights. They are provided with armor and (wooden) weapons as instructors teach them the skills necessary to ‘compete’ in one of the ‘bloody’ games at the end of the session.

Free drinks, a small snack, and free entrance to the Gladiator Museum of Rome are included in this experience.

Sistine Chapel

Visiting the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel can be a busy, overwhelming experience for adults, let alone kids! But you can’t visit Rome with kids without witnessing the beauty of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel.

Make the most of your visit to the holy Vatican City by booking an early morning express tour of the Sistine Chapel  or a  Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel tour  with Context Travel.

Both tours offer skip-the-line tickets. The early morning express tour of the Sistine Chapel is semi-private for up to six people and lasts one hour and 45 minutes. Visiting Rome without a stop at the Colosseum is like visiting Australia’s Great Barrier Reef but not snorkeling. It has to be done! Luckily, the scale and history of this Seventh Wonder of the World are sure to impress even the most unfazed kids.

If you want to take a Colosseum family tour, there are so many great ones. This express Colosseum tour for kids  is a classic. The private family tour lasts two-and-a-half hours and includes a skip-the-line ticket, games, a treasure hunt, and prizes to engage little ones.

On either tour, you can visit the underground where animals were kept for gladiator fights, all levels of the structure, access to the exhibition, and further exploration at the Roman Forum.

Visiting the subterranean burial chambers of Rome’s Catacombs is a fun thing to do with children who are intrigued by spooky and macabre places. One of the best tours in Rome for families of the Catacombs is this  private Catacombs tour .

With over 2,000 years of history underneath Rome, it is a great place to learn about Roman gods, pagan temples, and Christian crypts. There are even graves of some of the first popes in the Rome Catacombs!

This tour goes the extra mile by offering luxury transfers to the city center. It lasts three hours and since it’s a private tour, you can linger at places or skip whatever you want.

Day Trips in Rome

LivTours offers a fantastic  semi-private, small-group day tour of Pompeii  or you can book a  private day tour to Pompeii and Capua with Tours of Pompeii.

Italy is a popular tourist destination, known for its rich history, beautiful landscapes, and delicious cuisine. If you're planning to travel to Italy with your family, it's important to understand the age restrictions and requirements for children traveling to the country. This will ensure a smooth and hassle-free trip for everyone involved.

First and foremost, it's important to note that children of all ages are allowed to travel to Italy. There are no specific age restrictions in place for entry into the country. However, there are some important considerations to keep in mind.

Passports are required for all travelers, including children, entering Italy. Each child must have their own passport, which should be valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry. It's essential to check the expiration dates of your children's passports well in advance and renew them if necessary.

In addition to passports, children traveling to Italy may also need a visa, depending on their nationality. Visa requirements vary, so it's important to check the Italian Embassy or Consulate website in your country to determine if your child needs a visa and what the application process entails. It's advisable to start the visa application process well in advance to avoid any last-minute delays or complications.

Furthermore, if your child will be traveling without one or both parents, it's important to provide appropriate documentation to prove that you have legal custody or the necessary consent for their travel. This can include a notarized letter from the absent parent(s) granting permission for the child to travel, as well as copies of any legal documents establishing custody or guardianship.

When it comes to air travel, airlines have their own regulations regarding the age at which children can travel alone. Most airlines require children under the age of 14 to be accompanied by an adult. However, some airlines may allow children between the ages of 12 and 17 to travel as unaccompanied minors, provided they meet certain criteria. It's important to check with your airline to determine their specific requirements and policies regarding unaccompanied minors.

Once in Italy, it's important to take the necessary precautions to ensure your child's safety and well-being. This includes practicing general safety measures such as using child safety seats in cars, supervising children in public places, and being vigilant in crowded areas. It's also a good idea to familiarize yourself with the local emergency numbers in Italy, as well as the location of the nearest hospitals or medical facilities.

In summary, children of all ages are allowed to travel to Italy, but it's important to ensure they have the necessary passports and visas, as well as any required documentation if traveling without one or both parents. Checking with your airline regarding their policies for unaccompanied minors is also essential. By being prepared and informed, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable trip for your children in Italy.

Italy is a wonderful travel destination for families with children. The country offers a rich cultural experience, beautiful landscapes, and delicious food that appeal to both young and old. However, traveling with children can sometimes be challenging, so here are some tips to help make your trip to Italy a smooth and enjoyable one.

  • Plan ahead: Before you travel, do some research and plan your itinerary accordingly. Consider the interests and preferences of your children when selecting destinations and activities. Also, make sure to check the weather forecast and pack appropriate clothes and accessories.
  • Choose family-friendly accommodations: Look for hotels or accommodations that cater to families with children. Many hotels offer amenities such as playgrounds, swimming pools, and kid-friendly menus. You may also consider renting an apartment or a villa, which can provide more space and flexibility for your family.
  • Pack essential items: When traveling with children, it's important to pack all the necessary items they might need. This includes diapers, wipes, extra clothes, snacks, toys, and any medications they may require. Also, bring a stroller or a baby carrier to make it easier to navigate the streets and attractions.
  • Be mindful of meal times: Meal times in Italy are typically later than in some other countries, with lunch typically served from 12:30 pm and dinner as late as 8 pm. If you have younger children who are used to eating at earlier times, it's a good idea to pack snacks or have a light meal to tide them over until the restaurant opens. Many restaurants in tourist areas are prepared to accommodate families with younger children by opening for dinner earlier.
  • Be prepared for long walks: Italy is famous for its beautiful cities and historic sites, which often require a fair amount of walking. Make sure to bring comfortable shoes for both you and your children. You may also consider bringing a lightweight and foldable stroller for younger children who might get tired easily.
  • Take advantage of child-friendly attractions: Italy offers numerous child-friendly attractions that can keep your little ones entertained. Look out for museums with interactive exhibits, amusement parks, and zoos. Many cities also have beautiful parks and gardens where your children can play and unwind.
  • Respect local customs and rules: Italians are generally warm and welcoming to children. However, it's important to respect local customs and rules. For example, it's considered impolite to let your children climb on historic monuments or touch the artworks in museums. Teach your children about the importance of respecting local culture and heritage.
  • Stay safe: Safety is always a priority when traveling with children. Make sure to keep a close eye on them, especially in crowded places. Also, be aware of pickpockets and take precautions to safeguard your belongings. It's a good idea to have a plan in case your children get lost, such as establishing a meeting point or providing them with a card that contains your contact information.

Traveling with children in Italy can be a rewarding and memorable experience for the whole family. By planning ahead and following these tips, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip for everyone. So go ahead, pack your bags, and create lifelong memories with your loved ones in beautiful Italy!

Do You Really Need to Check In a Travel Backpack?

If you are planning a trip to Italy with your children, there are a few important documents and vaccinations that you need to know about. Traveling with children requires some extra preparation to ensure their safety and well-being. Here is a guide to the essential documents and vaccinations you will need when traveling to Italy with children.

Passport and Visa:

  • All travelers, including children, need to have a valid passport to enter Italy. Make sure to check the expiration date of your child's passport well in advance of your trip.
  • Depending on your nationality, you may also require a visa to travel to Italy. Check with the Italian embassy or consulate in your country to determine if a visa is necessary for your child.

Birth Certificate:

  • It is advisable to carry a certified copy of your child's birth certificate with you when traveling. This can be helpful for verification purposes, especially if your child doesn't have their own passport.
  • Some airlines and immigration authorities may ask for proof of parent-child relationship, so carrying a birth certificate can help in such situations.

Consent Letter:

  • If you are traveling alone with your child or without the other parent, it is recommended to carry a consent letter from the absent parent(s). This letter should state that the absent parent(s) have given permission for the child to travel with you.
  • The consent letter should include the name of the absent parent(s), contact details, and a statement granting permission for the child to travel. It is also a good idea to have the letter notarized to ensure its authenticity.

Vaccinations:

  • While there are no specific vaccinations required to enter Italy, it is always wise to ensure that your child's vaccines are up-to-date before traveling.
  • Standard childhood vaccines, such as measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTaP), polio, and varicella, should be up-to-date for your child's age.
  • Additionally, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional to discuss any specific travel-related vaccinations or precautions based on the area you will be visiting in Italy.

Health Insurance:

  • Make sure that you have valid health insurance for your child that covers any medical expenses that may arise during your trip to Italy. This will provide you with peace of mind in case of any unforeseen circumstances.
  • Contact your insurance provider to clarify the coverage details and ensure that you have all the necessary documentation handy, including policy numbers and emergency contact information.

Remember to keep all important documents, including passports, birth certificates, and consent letters, in a safe place while traveling. It is also a good idea to keep digital copies of these documents on your phone or in the cloud for easy access in case of loss or emergency.

A squeeze on people's incomes due to frozen tax thresholds will continue until 2028, with the Tories and Labour confirming they wouldn't end the "stealth tax". Read this and the rest of today's consumer and personal finance news below, and leave your thoughts in the comments box.

Energy prices are expected to rise again in the autumn and last week's announcement of a cut in the cap from July should not be taken as a "sign of stability", the head of the Energy Saving Trust has said.

"Confirmation that energy prices are coming down for the next quarter is very welcome," Mike Thornton said.

"However, no one should take this lower price cap as a sign of stability."

He added: "Forecasts show that energy prices are set to rise again this autumn and will be staying high overall for the next decade."

He urged the next UK government - to be decided in the general election on 4 July - to focus on policies that "support people to use less energy and install cost-effective energy efficiency improvements in their homes".

The cap will fall to £1,568 a year from 1 July - a drop of £122 from the previous quarter.

McDonald's customers have taken to social media to complain about a "naughty" detail in one of its new deals.

The fast food giant started a new mix and match deal this week - which allows shoppers to pick up three items for just £3 in store.

However, those ordering online have found the price increase to £4 for the same deal.

Writing in the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group, one user shared a screenshot of her My McDoanld's app, writing: "It's gone from 3 for £3 to 3 for £4. Which is odd, or is that cause it's on the app."

Another branded the price difference "naughty".

McDonald’s has since confirmed that this price is correct on app.

The increase is due to delivery fees charged by couriers like Uber Eats, Deliveroo and Just Eat - and is fairly standard across the industry.

Sony Music is reportedly in talks to purchase the entirety of rock band Queen's music catalogue in a deal mooted to be worth some $1bn (around £800m).

Bloomberg reports  the company has partnered with another anonymous investor to engage Brian May, Roger Taylor, John Deacon and the estate of Freddie Mercury over a sale that would be the largest of its kind.

Queen Productions Ltd, of which the bandmates and Mercury's estate are equal shareholders, recorded revenues of $52m in the year that ended in September 2022.

This comes after the catalogue of Bruce Springsteen was acquired by Sony in 2021, while rival Warner Music bought David Bowie's songbook for around $250m in 2022, as industry giants battle to invest in songwriting catalogues.

They are seen by many as attractive investments as the music can be used in future films, advertisements and on the radio - which all produce royalties for the rights owners.

A squeeze on people's incomes due to frozen tax thresholds will continue until 2028 under Tory plans, Jeremy Hunt has confirmed.

Rishi Sunak introduced a freeze on tax-free personal allowance thresholds (the amount you can earn before you start paying tax) when he was chancellor back in 2021. In his autumn 2022 budget, Mr Hunt extended the time it would need to be in place from 2026 to 2028.

The frozen rates mean many have failed to feel the benefit of a the national insurance cut which kicked in this year.

The Office for Budget Responsibility also estimates the static rates will drag an additional four million people into paying tax by 2028 and push three million into a higher tax bracket. This is because wages will go up alongside inflation but the threshold won't.

The policy is often referred to as a "stealth tax".

Mr Hunt told BBC Radio 4's Today programme today: "The tax rises that happened as a result of the pandemic and the energy shock, these two giant shocks, will stay for their allotted time period."

But he reiterated the Conservatives' pledge to end the freeze after 2028, saying: "I can absolutely undertake that the threshold freeze that we introduced until 2028 will not continue after that."

The Tories have said they will unfreeze the thresholds for pensioners if they win the election.

Labour has also refused to commit to unfreezing overall tax thresholds.

Sir Keir Starmer said earlier that he believed the tax burden on working people was "too high" but that his party was not going to "make commitments that we cannot afford".

"Therefore I'm very clear about the tax that will remain and will be locked and where we cannot make those commitments," he said.

What are the tax thresholds and what do they mean?

The personal tax allowance is frozen at £12,570. You don't pay income tax on anything you earn below that - anything above is taxed at the 20% base rate. At the same time, the higher rate has been frozen at £50,271 - anything above that is taxed at 40%.

Tom Selby, director of public policy at AJ Bell, said the personal allowance, if it had been inflation-linked since 2021-22, would be forecast to rise to £15,989 by 2028 - nearly £3,500 higher than the frozen threshold.

Tourists headed to Scotland for holidays will face a tourist tax for hotels, bed and breakfasts and holiday lets.

The Scottish Parliament passed the Visitor Levy (Scotland) Bill two days ago, meaning local authorities can set a charge for overnight accommodation.

According to the bill, the fee will be a percentage of the cost of a hotel or other room.

For instance, a 1% levy on a £200 booking means a visitor would pay £2 in tourist tax.

However, any charges or levies will not come into effect until spring 2026, as councils will first have to consult local businesses before carrying out an 18-month implementation period.

Those receiving disability benefits will not pay any charges, with children and young people also exempt.

Ministers will also have the power to set a cap on the number of nights where a levy would apply.

It will also be up to councils if they want to put a charge in place - but with Holyrood research suggesting 17 of Scotland's 32 councils backing the plans, it is likely some visitors will be hit by charges.

Scotland's employment and investment minister Tom Arthur said on Tuesday the charge would be a " force for good", suggesting it "has the potential to be an important tool enabling investment in the local economy, and supporting an important industry".

However, Scottish Conservatives argued there needed to be a more "robust" exemption scheme, with housing spokesman Miles Briggs saying: "Scots will be pretty unhappy when they realise that they will have to pay a 10% tax to stay in a hotel when their house is flooded."

The new law means Scotland joins Manchester, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole in charging tourists to stay the night.

Manchester's £1-a-night City Visitor Charge was introduced last April, and is estimated to have raised around £2.8m in its first year.

European hotspots like Barcelona and Venice have also introduced tourist taxes, with the Spanish city charging visitors €3.25 if they're staying in official accommodation.

Workers posing as Disney favourites such as Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Snow White in California have formed a union - Magic United.

There are roughly 1,700 performers and assistants who help to bring popular characters to life at Disneyland near Los Angeles.

Disney has faced allegations of not paying them a living wage, despite many facing exorbitant housing costs and commuting long distances.

Parade performers and character actors earn a base pay of $24.15 (£19) an hour, up from $20 (£15.75) before January.

Nike is celebrating a partial victory over rival brand Adidas in court, as it has been permitted to put three stripes on some of its clothing designs in Germany.

The decision came during a second appeal hearing between the two sportswear brands at a regional court in Dusseldorf.

The court previously barred Nike from using two or three stripes on five trouser designs due to a lawsuit filed by Adidas in 2022, which is on a mission to protect its trademark three-stripe design.

Following the appeal, Nike can now use the stripes on four disputed trouser designs, while a ban for one is still in place.

Adidas has filed dozens of lawsuits and signed hundreds of settlement agreements related to its three-tripe design since 2008.

The Conservatives and Labour have ruled out VAT hikes if either party wins the election.

Jeremy Hunt, the chancellor, said tax rises on products and services would "hammer families' finances", while shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves said Labour did not plan to raise tax, national insurance or VAT.

The pledges come after the Institute for Fiscal Studies said the next UK government would face the toughest fiscal inheritance in 70 years.

Ms Reeves said: "I want taxes on working people to be lower, not higher."

New tax rises were restricted to those policies already announced, such as a plan to charge 20% VAT on private school fees, she said.

Writing in The Telegraph, Mr Hunt said: "We won't increase the main rate of VAT for the duration of the next Parliament."

He continued: "A VAT increase will hammer families' finances and push inflation back up."

He urged Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer to make a similar commitment "on camera".
