Hummingbird Eco-Holiday

Day 1 - santo domingo ⇒ barahona.

In the morning, transfer from the hotel to the bus station of Caribe Tours. The driver will take care of your bus tickets. (Departures 4x daily)

Travel time is about 3:15 hours.

Drive along the coastal road out of town to San Cristóbal. The villages are surrounded by mango and breadfruit trees, coconut palms and bananas. After Bani, the road climbs uphill through increasingly barren land. Columnar cacti and yellow-flowered agaves grow here. In Hatillo you will see the "Bahia de Ocoa". The road leads into the mountains, through a dry and stony land dotted with cacti and agaves. Then a wide view opens on the big river Rio Yaque del Sur, with palm trees in the river valley. It is the only river oasis in this dry area. You will reach the provincial capital, Barahona, located on the "Bahia de Neiba". This is your base for the next three days. This is where the famous pirate Cofresí is said to have had his lair.

You will be picked up at the bus station in Barahona and transferred to your hotel.

Sustainable Travel & Ecotourism in Dominican Republic

After decades of trashing its environment, the Dominican Republic is becoming more environmentally responsible. The signs are everywhere, even at the Punta Cana airport, which uses native materials and has an open-air feeling with tropical birds darting through the rafters.

The country today boasts 16 national parks and 67 protected areas within its borders. It's a land of white sandy beaches, forests with dense growth, and towering mountains. With its rich flora and fauna, it is a popular spot for eco-minded visitors.

There are no official campgrounds within the reserves. To visit one of the national parks, eco-adventurers have to secure permission. To camp in one of the parks, a regular pass costing RD$50 must be obtained at local park offices or through the national office at Avenida Máximo Gómez, Apartado Postal 2487 in Santo Domingo (tel. 809/472-4202 ).

Another way to go for the independent eco-traveler is to seek hostel-style campgrounds located in areas close to natural attractions. These cost as little as US$8 to pitch your own tent. Cottages and cabins are also available close to the national parks and protected areas. These eco-type hotels rent rooms for as little as US$40 a night or US$115 for a room and full meals.

But let's not paint too rosy a picture. Rapid development, the most expansive in the Caribbean, threatens the environment and the island's natural beauty. Once the D.R. was the front-runner in the Caribbean with its lush rainforests. Some 1,500 species were found only here. But to make way for development, swamps were drained and trees cut down. Today, the D.R. has less than 15% of its original forest cover remaining. Even so, it's a lot better than Haiti, which shares the island of Hispaniola with the D.R. Haiti has been almost entirely deforested because of the pressures of poverty.

One of the latest efforts to promote sustainable tourism is through the eco-initiative of coffee production called La Ruta Del Café; the project operates in the towns of Salcedo and Bonao. Visitors come here to see the process of coffee production and discover unique pathways into the tropical forests.

For more specific adventures in the D.R., several outfitters can hook you up with eco- and adventure activities; ask at your hotel desk for local contacts. The major activities include mountain biking, surfing, whale-watching, white-water rafting, bird-watching, canyoning, hiking, horseback riding, kayaking, jeep safaris, island exploring, and rock climbing. Punta Cana is known for its beautiful beaches and luxurious resorts; however many travelers don’t realize that the Dominican Republic is home to lush forests, rivers, cenotes (naturally formed lakes found in caves), a desert region in the south, wide valleys in the central area, and mountains – the tallest, Pico Duarte, has an elevation of over 10,000 feet!

For each type of natural wonder in the Dominican Republic, there is a traveler itching to explore. Those looking to see more than just the beach at your resort will find plenty to do in the Punta Cana area, which is home to the Cap Cana Forest and also an ecological reserve and a number of beautiful cenotes.

From taking a Segway tour around the area to zip lining through the trees, there are many ways to immerse yourself in the nature of the Dominican Republic! 1) Segway Eco Tour: beaches, lagoons, and forests

You’re the kind of traveler that wants to see it all – while you love the beach, you also want to get out and see more of the region. Whether you’re a solo traveler or traveling with friends or family, you want to take in as many of the sights as possible. You’re definitely a curious explorer and go-getter when it comes to taking a trip.

If this describes you, then you should consider the Segway Eco Tour – one of the easiest ways to check out the natural beauty of Punta Cana! This tour is appropriate for adults and children 8 and up.

Your tour company will give a brief lesson on how to ride your two-wheeled, self-balancing Segway so that even those who have never tried before will be comfortable. However, if for any reason, you are not able to ride a Segway, you can still participate in the tour by riding along in a golf cart. Then it’s off you go – the tour includes a few different stops.

One section of the tour is a trek on wheels through the Punta Cana Ecological Reserve, a private protected area of lowland subtropical forest, where you can see animals and native flowers while also passing by greenhouses, a sugarcane plantation, and a ranch for farm animals.

One incredible place in the reserve is the Indigenous Eyes lagoon, where you can rest or take a dip in the water. Finally, another stop on the tour is a ride through the La Cana Golf Course, and the Tortuga Bay resort to get to Serena Beach.

At the beach, you can get some shade under the palm trees or dip your toes in the water! For this tour, wear comfortable shoes, a bathing suit, towel, and sense of adventure.

2) Saona Island Day Trip: beaches, boats, and sun

When planning a trip, you know it’s absolutely worth a bit of extra travel and preparation to see incredible sights. You don’t mind getting on a bus and a boat to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience! You also know that once you arrive at your destination, you’ll want to kick off your shoes (or sandals) and relax in the shade with a drink in hand.

If this is you to a T, and you’re looking for an exciting day trip away from the routines at your resort, visit Isla Saona , off the south coast of Punta Cana. This island has been featured in a number of films as a deserted island, but in fact, has a small population of a few hundred residents on the southern part in the town of Mano Juan.

This remote island has become an incredibly popular spot for visitors as the beaches have white sand and are surrounded by clear blue waters. Starfish are also known to live in the waters surrounding the island – but remember, to keep the starfish healthy and happy – don’t take them out of the water for photographs!

To get to the island, you’ll board a bus from your resort or hotel in Punta Cana and travel to Bayahibe. From there, you’ll board either a speedboat or catamaran to get Saona Island. Then you can spend some time enjoying the sun and sand with lunch, drinks, and time to relax. This trip is a full day and appropriate for solo travelers or for the whole family.

For a special treat while in Punta Cana, visit Hoyo Azul . It is a cenote, a pool that forms naturally within a cave, and is only seen in certain parts of the world. This tour starts off with a hike up El Farallon cliff to get to the entrance of the cave where the “Blue Hole” can be found.

Your tour guide will point out some incredible archaeological finds here: original petroglyphs, or cave paintings, by the Taino people, the original residents of the Dominican Republic. Then you will have a chance to explore and swim in Hoyo Azul. The cool waters are a respite from the heat of the island, and the experience of seeing this natural specimen will be unforgettable!

4) Zip Line Eco Tour: forests and heart-racing fun

Your vacation may not be complete unless you’ve done some kind of extreme adventure, whether it’s skydiving, surfing, or anything else that gets your blood pumping. If you live for the rush of wind and are a slight daredevil, (while still being safe), ziplining might already be number 1 on your to-do list while on vacation in the Dominican Republic.

Nestled within the Cap Cana forest is a spectacular zip line for those who seek a thrill. Buckle on your helmet and strap into your harness for a wild ride over 15 platforms and 8 cables across 2,500 feet of trees.

Note that ziplining is appropriate for children five and up, and while there is no weight limit, your waist should not exceed a 45-inch circumference. This tour is not recommended for expectant mothers.

If ziplining isn’t enough and you want more fun, this tour can be combined with other activities at Scape Park such as a trip to Hoyo Azul or the Las Ondas Underground Cenote, an expedition of Iguabonita Cave, a waterfall safari, or a getaway to Juanillo Beach.

5) Samana Explorer or Whale Watching Tours: waterfalls, animals, and boats

Whether it’s your first time to the Dominican Republic, or tenth time, you always like to see other areas of the island. The Samana Explorer by Plane , which is offered year round, except during January through March, when you can go on a Whale Watching Tour, are great ways to see the Samana peninsula on the northeast coast of the Dominican Republic.

For the Samana Explorer by Plane tour, a charter plane will whisk you from Punta Cana to Samana, where you’ll board a Safari truck to explore the Samana area.

6) Los Haitises National Park: forests, caves, and rivers

For those who want to see the Dominican countryside and many ecological highlights, a trip to Los Haitises National Park might already be on your radar. Nestled just south of the Samana Peninsula, Los Haitises National Park, meaning “the mountains” in the Taino language, has over 300 square miles of protected forest.

You’ll board a bus to travel from Punta Cana to the park through the towns of Higuey, Hato Mayor, and El Seibo. The park has incredible flora such as orchids, mangroves and different types of trees, as well as fauna such as birds like pelicans.

Part of this tour includes a catamaran ride through the canals in the park leading to a tour of two caves that were once used by the Taino people: Cueva de la Arena, which is located on a beach, and has rock sculptures made by the Tainos; and Cueva de la Linea, deep in the forest with Taino petroglyphs.

The tour also includes a typical Dominican Lunch at Yanigua Spa, followed by a trip to a nearby river where you can swim and admire the waterfall.

The Dominican Republic is a paradise for those who practise ecotourism , because it could be practised in each of its coastal regions. In this wonderful Caribbean country you will find thousands of walking trails , multiple nature parks and reserves , beautiful beaches , unexplored caves , impressive waterfalls ...

Although it is a small country, the Dominican Republic has a great diversity of ecological parks and reserves, where, on the one hand, flora and fauna could be admired, moreover tropical woods , desertic areas or coast cliffs , where different species of birds could be observed, and on the other hand, the sea, where the huge humpback whales could be seen.

Another attraction of this country is the vast offer of adventure sports that could be practised. During your journey you could try mountaineering , rafting , tubing , hiking , or take a safari trip .

All regions have privileged areas to practise ecotourism, the most important ones are:

- The northern region , its most important places are Puerto Plata and Montecristi . The last one has lots of authentic ecological possibilities, because it has not been explored yet. There, you can visit unspoiled beaches , Montecristi National Park , El Morro , and the city of Cabarete , which is famous for its bay.

- The northwestern region is in Samaná’s Peninsula, there you can visit the renowned Los Haitises National Park , Salto El Limón Waterfall , Du Du lagoon and the natural aquarium of Kaio or go for a walk to Padre Nuestro ecological trail .

- In the eastern region you can find Bávaro lagoon , the ecological park of Ojos Indígenas , The Manatí Park and the Fun Fun and Las Maravillas Caves .

- In the southern region , in the area of Barahona and Pedernales, it could be visited the unique National Park of Sierra de Bahoruco , there it is located the biggest lake of the Dominican Republic, Enriquillo Lake , and also Las Águilas Bay , Oviedo’s Lagoon , El Hoyo de Pelempito and Rojo Cape .

- The inner area is called “ The Dominican Alps ”, and it is located in the region of Jarabacoa, there it is located the main mountain range , where the highest peaks are found, like Pico Duarte , La Pelona and La Rosilla . Nachhaltigkeit wird in unserem Leben immer wichtiger – auch beim Urlaub. Zeit also, auch einen Blick auf nachhaltiges Reisen zu legen – und zwar in der Dominikanischen Republik. Das Land in der Karibik, welches vor allem für All-Inclusive-Resorts und Pauschalreisen bekannt ist, hat viele spannende Ökotourismus-Projekte zu bieten, ebenso wie interessante und einzigartige nachhaltige Initiativen sowie einige der spektakulärsten Eco-Lodges in der Karibik. Dank meiner mittlerweile mehr als 6 Jahre im Land möchte ich mit diesem Eco-Guide über nachhaltiges Reisen in der Dominikanischen Republik berichten, der Frage nachgehen, wie man einen Karibikurlaub verträglicher, sozialer und umweltbewusster gestalten kann und dabei einige spannende Projekte vorstellen.

Nachhaltiges Reisen in die Karibik?

Während sich die Karibik und nachhaltiger Urlaub zunächst auszuschließen scheinen, geht es hierbei nicht um eine ökologisch einwandfreie, 100% klimaneutrale sowie komplett nachhaltige Reise in die Dominikanische Republik . Aufgrund der Langstreckenflüge, den nicht vorhandenen Fortbewegungsmethoden mit alternativem Antrieb im Land sowie dem Plastik- und Müllproblem in der Dominikanischen Republik ist dies schon gar nicht möglich.

Vielmehr geht es darum, Möglichkeiten aufzuzeigen, wie ein Urlaub in der Dominikanischen Republik bewusster, nachhaltiger, sozialer und umweltverträglicher gestaltet werden kann, denn es gibt viele spannende Eco-Projekte und Ökotourismus-Initiativen im Land (vor allem auf Makroebene), die schlichtweg nicht bekannt sind und viel mehr Aufmerksamkeit verdienen. Auch richtig spektakuläre Eco-Lodges hat die Dominikanische Republik zu bieten. Ebenso geht es darum, den typischen Reiseformen in der Dominikanischen Republik nachhaltigere Alternativen gegenüberzustellen.

Hierbei sind vor allem zwei Aspekte zu beachten: – wer sich bereits mit einer Individualreise in die Dominikanische Republik beschäftigt, hat bereits einen Schritt in die richtige Richtung getan und findet im hier folgenden Nachhaltigkeits-Guide spannende Anregungen, um mit einer Fernreise in die Karibik einen besseren Fußabdruck als bei einem gewöhnlichen Urlaub zu hinterlassen. – wer einen All-Inclusive-Urlaub in der Dominikanischen Republik plant, sollte überlegen, zumindest für einige Tage das Resort zu verlassen, um so den Ökotourimus in der Dominikanischen Republik besser kennenzulernen. Wer sich nicht traut, mit einem Mietwagen zu fahren, kann sich auch einen lokalen Fahrer nehmen.

Es geht also vor allem darum, einen Urlaub in die Dominikanische Republik nachhaltiger zu gestalten, nicht komplett grün. Es spricht nichts dagegen, 300 Kilometer mit einem SUV zu fahren oder mal einige Tage in ein größeres Hotel mit Klimaanlage zu gehen. Vielmehr soll dieser Eco-Guide Anregungen geben, wie man seine Reise in die Karibik sozialer und ökologischer gestalten kann, eine Art sanfter Tourismus sozusagen. Was kann man tun für einen nachhaltigeren Tourismus in der Dominikanischen Republik? Wie kann ich meine Karibikreise sozialer gestalten? Wie funktioniert Ökotourismus in der Dominikanischen Republik?

Nachhaltige Anreise in die Dominikanische Republik

Schon beim ersten Punkt zeigt sich, dass eine Fernreise in die Dominikanische Republik nur schwierig mit ökologischen Gesichtspunkten vereinbar ist. Eine Anreise in die Karibik per Flugzeug von rund 7500 Kilometern pro Strecke bleibt eine sehr umweltschädliche Form des Urlaubs und auch die Kompensation der Emissionen kann dies nur zum Teil wieder gut machen. Dennoch geht es hier in diesem Artikel wie gesagt nicht darum, einen Urlaub in der Dominikanischen Republik aus Nachhaltigkeit komplett zu streichen oder zu verbieten, sondern diesen im Rahmen der Möglichkeiten soweit es geht ökologischer zu machen.

In Bezug auf die Anreise sind daher die folgenden Punkte wichtig, die überwiegend auch für weitere Langstrecken-Destinationen gelten: – wenn möglich einen Direktflug buchen und auf Umstiege verzichten – Emissionen des Fluges über Atmosfair oder Klima-Kollekte (die beiden Testsieger bei Stiftung Warentest) kompensieren (wichtig ist es, auf den Gold Standard CER zu achten) – den Urlaub in der Dominikanischen Republik möglichst lang planen (mindestens 3 Wochen), damit sich die Flugreise auch lohnt

Nachhaltige Unterkünfte in der Dominikanischen Republik

Oft sind in Bezug auf Unterkünfte in der Dominikanischen Republik nur die All-Inclusive Resorts bekannt, doch es gibt so viel mehr zu entdecken. Schon wer eine reguläre Mietwagen-Rundreise in der Dominikanischen Republik plant und sich auf Individualhotels fokussiert, kann seinen Beitrag für einen nachhaltigeren Tourismus in der Karibik leisten, doch es gibt auch ganz spezielle Unterkünfte und Eco-Lodges in der Dominikanischen Republik , die einen Urlaub der Nachhaltigkeit deutlich näherbringt, nicht nur in Sachen Umweltschutz, sondern auch in Bezug auf soziale Verträglichkeit und einen fairen Umgang mit der Bevölkerung.

Schauen wir also auf die besonders nachhaltigen Unterkünfte und Eco-Lodges in der Dominikanischen Republik.

Extreme Hotel, Cabarete: Das Extreme Hotel ist eine der führenden Unterkünfte in Sachen Nachhaltigkeit in der Dominikanischen Republik und Vorreiter in Sachen Ökotourismus. Das Extreme Hotel bezeichnet sich selbst zu 100% als nachhaltig, sowohl ökologisch als auch ethisch und sozial. Zu den konkreten Maßnahmen gehören unter anderen eine eigene Solaranlage, 100% Solarstrom, 80% lokale Angestellte, ein nachhaltiges Hotel-Management-Konzept sowie eine eigene Permakultur-Farm, die über 90% weniger Wasser als herkömmliche Landwirtschaft verbraucht und deren Produkte Hauptbestandteil der zahlreichen Speisen im lokalen Restaurant des Extreme Hotel sind. Auch touristisch kann das Extreme Hotel punkten und ist im Surfer-Hotspot Cabarete zu Hause, direkt am Strand gelegen und mit zahlreichen weiteren Angeboten wie Yoga, Fitness, River-Tubing oder Kite-Kursen. Auch die Cordillera Septentrional, das spannende Nordküstengebirge mit seinen zahlreichen Abenteuern , lässt sich von hier aus bestens entdecken.

Tubagua Plantation Eco-Lodge, nahe Puerto Plata: Geht es um nachhaltigen Tourismus in der Dominikanischen Republik kann die Tubagua Plantation Eco-Lodge in der Nähe von Puerto Plata sehr gut mit dem Extreme Hotel mithalten. Die Eco-Lodge mit einem spektakulären Blick auf die Nordküste überzeugt mit der Verwendung natürlicher Materialien, einem enorm geringen Stromverbrauch sowie dem intensiven Einbezug der Natur in die Gestaltung der Anlage. Viel wichtiger ist hier aber die soziale Komponente, denn nahezu alle Angestellte kommen aus dem benachbarten Dorf, zudem konnten zahlreiche nachhaltige Touren unter Einbeziehung der Dörfer im Hinterland des Nordküstengebirges erstellt werden, womit den Einwohnern eine wirtschaftliche Perspektive gegeben werden kann. Die Touren sind übrigens ziemlich spannend, wie Ihr hier in meinem Reisebericht über die Cordillera Septentrional lesen könnt . Hinzu kommen für Besucher der nachhaltigen Tubagua Plantation Eco-Lodge leckere hausgemachte Speisen, die von den Einheimischen auf traditionelle Art und Weise über dem Feuer zubereitet werden.

Samán Boutique Hotel, Las Terrenas: Wer es etwas komfortabler und eleganter mag und dennoch nicht auf Nachhaltigkeit in der Dominikanischen Republik verzichten möchte, kann einen genaueren Blick auf das erst 2020 eröffnete Samán Boutique-Hotel in Las Terrenas auf der Samaná-Halbinsel werfen. Die moderne Unterkunft setzt einen wichtigen Fokus auf die Traditionen von Samaná, sodass viele Elemente von der Halbinsel beim Bau verwendet wurden. Darüber hinaus wird Solarenergie erzeugt, eigene Früchte geerntet und ein Gemüsegarten gepflegt, um das hauseigene Restaurant mit frischen Produkten zu versorgen. Von Las Terrenas aus lassen sich auch perfekt die wunderschönen und menschenleeren Strände der Samaná-Halbinsel erkunden, die diese Gegend so besonders machen.

Dominican Tree House, Samaná: Eine weitere dem Ökotourismus verschriebene Unterkunft auf Samaná und eine der spektakulärsten Eco-Lodges in der Dominikanischen Republik ist das Dominican Tree House Village. Dieses Baumhaus-Hotel ist in die tropische Vegetation des Dschungels auf der Samaná-Halbinsel gebaut und erstreckt sich über Waldpfade und Hängebrücken, um die einzelnen Zimmer und Häuser miteinander zu verbinden. Da im Dominican Tree House Village auch Vollpension inklusive ist, eignet es sich am besten für jene, die Ihr All-Inclusive Resort in Punta Cana mal für ein paar Tage verlassen wollen, ohne jedoch auf eine organisierte und vorgebuchte Verpflegung zu verzichten. In Bezug auf den Nachhaltigkeits-Gedanken kann das Dominican Tree House Village vor allem mit der Entwicklung einer wirtschaftlichen Perspektive für die Dorfbewohner, nachhaltigem Landwirtschaften, Baumpflanzungsprogrammen in der Umgebung sowie der Unterstützung von sozialen Projekten auf der Halbinsel punkten.

Paraíso Caño Hondo, Nationalpark Los Haitises: Das Paraíso Caño Hondo ist, gemeinsam mit seinem Schwesterhotel Altos de Caño Hondo, die einzige Unterkunft im beliebten Nationalpark Los Haitises. Es beeindruckt vor allem mit den zahlreichen Naturpools, die mittels mehrerer Wasserfälle von einem natürlichen Fluss gespeist werden, sowie der Verwendung von enorm vielen Materialien der Umgebung beim Bau und der Ausstattung der Zimmer. Selbst die Felsen wurden als natürliche Wand genutzt! Auch die Touren werden von lokalen Guides aus dem kleinen Städtchen Sabana de la Mar durchgeführt und schaffen so eine Alternative zum rund 2 Stunden entfernten Megatourismus in Punta Cana . Schon aufgrund der absolut einzigartigen Umgebung mit den Wasserfall-Pools und der Lage direkt im Nationalpark lohnt sich eine Übernachtung hier im Paraíso Caño Hondo.

Villa Pajón: Auch die Villa Pajón ist eine Unterkunft in einem Nationalpark in der Dominikanischen Republik , dem Parque Nacional Valle Nuevo. Sie ist zudem auch die höchstgelegene Unterkunft in der Karibik , gelegen auf rund 2300 Metern Höhe. In dieser spektakulären Naturkulisse, von der Ihr in diesem Reisebericht über die Cordillera Central mehr Eindrücke sehen könnt , versteht es sich fast von selbst, dass man dem Ökotourismus in der Dominikanischen Republik sehr nahe ist. Auch wenn es bei der Villa Pajón kein konkretes Nachhaltigkeits-Programm gibt, so hilft sie vor allem den Dominikanern, die Liebe zur Natur zu finden und diese anschließend besser zu schützen. Zudem wird der Strom direkt vor Ort aus Solarenergie gewonnen.

Diese Liste ist keinesfalls abschließend, es gibt noch viele weitere spannende Unterkünfte in der Dominikanischen Republik , die ebenfalls einen positiven Einfluss auf Land & Leute haben.

Außer Frage steht, dass ein nachhaltiger Urlaub in einem All-Inclusive-Resort in der Dominikanischen Republik nicht möglich ist. Vor allem die ungeheure Lebensmittelverschwendung (alles vom Buffet wandert anschließend in die Tonne), der hohe Strom- und Wasserverbrauch, die schlechte Transportbilanz sowohl von Gütern als auch von Personen, die Verletzung von Umweltauflagen sowie die Auswirkungen des Massentourismus gehen mit den Prinzipien des verträglichen und ökologischen Tourismus nicht überein, auch wenn es einzelne Resorts gibt, die Wert auf Nachhaltigkeit legen – allerdings nur in jenem Rahmen, wie es für ein All-Inclusive Resort möglich ist. Damit muss man auch ehrlich sagen, dass die typische Pauschalreise in die Dominikanische Republik ebenfalls ökologisch sehr kritisch zu sehen ist.

Wer bisher begeisterter All-Inclusive-Urlauber ist und die ersten Schritte hin zu einer nachhaltigeren Reise in die Dominikanische Republik machen möchte, sollte daher zumindest damit anfangen, einen Teil des Urlaubs außerhalb des Resorts zu verbringen. Eine Idee für den Start wäre es, 3-4 Nächte in den oben genannten Eco-Lodges und nachhaltigen Unterkünften in der Dominikanischen Republik zu verbringen, um so eine Idee von dieser Reiseform zu bekommen und auch mehr vom Land kennenzulernen. Diese wenigen Nächten können dann während der nächsten Reisen in andere Länder peu à peu ausgebaut werden.

Ökologische Fortbewegung in der Dominikanischen Republik

Im Zuge der Fortbewegung sehen die nachhaltigen Alternativen nur wenig besser aus als bei der oben beschriebenen Anreise. Immerhin, die Dominikanische Republik ist klein genug, sodass keine Inlandsflüge benötigt werden und es diese, mit Ausnahme von Privatjets oder Touristen-Ausflügen, auch nicht gibt.

Elektroautos in der Dominikanischen Republik beginnen ganz langsam, sich auszubreiten, sind aber noch weit davon entfernt, massentauglich zu sein oder für eine Rundreise in Frage zu kommen. Zudem bietet derzeit kein Autovermieter in der Dominikanischen Republik E-Autos an. Von daher bleibt nur das Mieten eines normalen Mietwagens. Hier sollte man zumindest darauf achten, dass man nicht jeden Tag 200 Kilometer abreißt, sondern sich auf wenige Regionen fokussiert und diese dafür intensiver kennenlernt.

Der öffentliche Nahverkehr in der Dominikanischen Republik gehört zu den besten in der gesamten Karibik . Viele Busse sind verhältnismäßig komfortabel und fahren in hohen Frequenzen. Zwar gehört die Dominikanische Republik in Sachen Emissionen ihrer Busse sicher nicht zu den Vorreitern, aber eine mehr oder weniger ökologische Alternative ist es allemal.

Auch die Fortbewegung mit dem Fahrrad oder zu Fuß sind möglich. Besonders Wanderungen in der Dominikanischen Republik stehen hoch im Kurs, wie Ihr auch im nächsten Abschnitt sehen werdet. Auf der Samaná-Halbinsel wäre es sogar möglich, eine spannende Mehrtages-Wanderung von A nach B zu planen, auf der man die gesamte Halbinsel zu Fuß durchquert und so die Top-Sehenswürdigkeiten besucht. Natürlich sollte man hierfür mit leichtem Gepäck unterwegs sein. Eine mögliche Route hierfür wäre Las Galeras – Playa Rincón – Playa El Valle – El Limón – Las Terrenas.

Nachhaltige Aktivitäten in der Dominikanischen Republik

Wichtig für den ökologischen Fußabdruck – nicht so sehr in Bezug auf die Emissionen, aber vor allem auf die soziale und kulturelle Komponente – sind auch die Aktivitäten, die man während einer Reise begeht. Hierbei bietet die Dominikanische Republik enorm viele Highlights, Geheimtipps und Erfahrungen, die oft völlig unbekannt sind und im Schatten der typischen Hotel-Ausflüge stehen.

Wandern in der Dominikanischen Republik

Eine dieser Aktivitäten mit einem besonderen Bezug auf Nachhaltigkeit ist das Wandern in der Dominikanischen Republik . Wie Ihr in meinem Wander-Guide nachlesen könnt, gibt es hier im Land viele tolle Touren, die zu den besten Wanderungen der Karibik zählen. Generell ist Wandern eine der nachhaltigsten Aktivitäten, nicht nur für die Umwelt, sondern auch für den eigenen Körper. Hinzu kommt, dass in den letzten Jahren viele sehr interessante Projekte entstanden sind, die sich auf Wanderungen und Ökotourismus in einer ganz bestimmten lokalen Gegend spezialisieren. Die Unterstützung dieser Initiativen bietet nicht nur unvergessliche Erlebnisse für einen Urlaub in der Dominikanischen Republik , sondern auch zusätzliche Einblicke in die Kultur der Landbevölkerung sowie die Unterstützung von Familienbetrieben und lokalen Arbeitsplätzen.

Einige der spannendsten sozial nachhaltigen Wanderprojekte und Wanderungen in der Dominikanischen Republik sind:

Salto La Gritona mit Ecoturismo Lynx: Bei Ecoturismo Lynx handelt es sich um eine Gruppe junger Guides in Bonao, die in unglaublicher Art und Weise die Berge rund um ihre Heimatstadt unsicher machen. Vor einigen Jahren gab es hier quasi ausschließlich nicht zugänglichen Dschungel, heute kann man mit den lokalen Guides eine Menge Wasserfälle, klarer Bergflüsse und spektakulärer Wanderungen erleben. Eine für (wirkliche) Abenteurer und ambitionierte Geländegänger anspruchsvolle Tour führt zum Beispiel zum Salto La Gritona, den zweithöchsten Wasserfall der Dominikanischen Republik .

Cueva de la Virgen mit Guanaventuras: Der Südwesten der Dominikanischen Republik zählt zu den unbekanntesten, aber zugleich auch schönsten Regionen des Landes. Wer diesen näher erkunden möchte, kann mit Guanaventuras eine lokale Initiative des Dorfes La Cienaga unterstützen, welche nicht nur Touren und Wanderungen anbieten, sondern auch seine Dorfbewohner in die Wertschöpfungskette des Tourismus einbeziehen und Souvenirs aus lokalen Produkten herstellen, zum Beispiel Marmelade oder Schmuck. Für eine der unvergesslichsten Wanderungen empfiehlt sich der türkisblaue und kristallklare Fluss Rio La Plaza oder die halboffene und von Wasser durchschossene Cueva de la Virgen.

Los Cacaos mit Luna Herrera Travel: Was Ecoturismo Lynx für die Bonao-Region und Guanaventuras für die südliche Umgebung von Barahona ist Luna Herrera Travel für Los Cacaos, ein kleines Bergdorf mit vielfältigen Wandermöglichkeiten nicht allzu weit von Santo Domingo entfernt. Auch diese Gruppierung junger motivierter Guides, die den Städtern die Natur näherbringen und die Dominikanische Republik ein Stückchen weiter in Sachen nachhaltigen Tourismus rücken wollen, ist erst vor wenigen Jahren entstanden. Zu den bekanntesten Touren gehört die Wanderung ins Valle del Dios. Wer lieber Wasserfälle erkundet, sollte unbedingt El Tabernaculo in seine Karibikreise einplanen.

Die genannten Wanderungen sind eher mittlerer (Rio La Plaza, El Tabernaculo) bis hoher Schwierigkeit (Salto La Gritona), doch die jeweiligen Anbieter haben auch einfache Touren im Programm – und das zu absolut günstigen Preisen.

Strände und Nationalparks in der Dominikanischen Republik

Was kann nachhaltiger sein, als die wunderschöne Natur der Karibik zu erkunden – vor allem, wenn es nachhaltig und ökologisch passiert, ohne Touristenmassen, mit natürlichen Fortbewegungsmitteln (zu Fuß oder mit dem Fahrrad), ohne Müll oder Spuren zu hinterlassen? Besonders wer sich deutlich abseits von Punta Cana bewegt, hat die wunderschönen Nationalparks oder Strände in der Dominikanischen Republik oft für sich alleine. Als einige der schönsten Erlebnisse und Möglichkeiten für sanften Ökotourismus in der Dominikanischen Republik kann ich die 3 folgenden Aktivitäten empfehlen:

Für Romantiker – Spaziergänge an menschenleeren Stränden: In der Dominikanischen Republik gibt es nicht nur belebte Strände wie jene in Punta Cana oder Puerto Plata, sondern auch eine Unmenge an absolut menschenleeren, wilden und natürlichen Stränden , die man teils entspannt, teils abenteuerlich erkunden kann. Wer solche Strände sucht, kann sich zum Beispiel den Playa Esmeralda, den Playa Lanza del Norte oder die Strände östlich und westlich von Cabarete näher anschauen.

Für Aktive – mit dem Kajak durch den Los Haitises National Park: Mangroven gehören zu einem besonders fragilen Teil unseres Ökosystems – auch in der Dominikanischen Republik. Eine der ökologisch verträglichsten Formen, Mangroven zu entdecken, ist mit dem Kayak. Im Nationalpark Los Haitises ist dies möglich und eine besonders schöne Möglichkeit, einen der wichtigsten Nationalparks in der Dominikanischen Republik kennenzulernen.

Für Abenteuerlustige – Canyoning in der Cordillera Septentrional: Aber es braucht nicht immer ein Kayak, um das Wasser zu genießen – beim Canyoning ist dies ganz ohne Hilfsmittel möglich. Besonders in der Cordillera Septentrional gibt es einige tolle und abenteuerliche Touren, mit Sicherheit die besten Canyoning-Erfahrungen in der Karibik. Besonders der Magic Mushroom und der Cañon de Arroyo Frio sind einzigartig und für Adrenalinjunkies wärmstens zu empfehlen. Ähnlich den oben vorgestellten Wanderinitiativen gibt es mit Jamao Eco Tours für das Canyoning im Norden der Dominikanischen Republik ebenfalls eine von Einheimischen gegründete und geführte Organisation, die eng mit den lokalen Strukturen verwurzelt ist.

Kulturell die Dominikanische Republik nachhaltig erleben

Doch nicht nur die Natur ist in der Karibik spektakulär, auch kulturell lässt sich die Dominikanische Republik nachhaltig erleben. Dies kann mit einfachen Dingen wie das Respektieren lokaler Gepflogenheiten, das Nutzen dominikanischer Angebote (zum Beispiel beim Essen anstatt internationaler Restaurants) oder dem Erlernen der spanischen Sprache beginnen und kann auf nächster Ebene mit den folgenden Aktivitäten und Touren fortgesetzt werden, die im besonderen Maße auf kulturelle Integrität, soziale Förderung und dem interkulturellen Austausch setzen.

Vertiefende Stadtführung in Santo Domingo: Vor allem in der wunderschönen und unbedingt besuchenswerten Kolonialzone von Santo Domingo gibt es enorm viele Guides, die ihre Dienste für Stadtführungen anbieten. Während diese definitiv in Ordnung sind und einen guten ersten Überblick über die Geschichte und sehenswerte Bauwerke geben, lohnt es sich, in themenspezifischen Touren mit Einheimischen mehr über die sozialen und kulturellen Besonderheiten zu lernen, zum Beispiel in Bezug auf die Vergangenheit der einheimischen Bevölkerung als Sklaven oder auch über das Nachtleben, was ein enorm wichtiges Kulturgut in der Dominikanischen Republik darstellt.

Tanzstunden mit einem lokalen Guide: Apropos Nachtleben, was in der Dominikanischen Republik ebenfalls eine enorm hohe kulturelle Bedeutung hat, ist das Tanzen. Es liegt quasi im Blut eines (fast) jeden Dominikaners. Überall wird getanzt, egal ob auf der Straße, zu Hause, im Büro, im Badezimmer, unabhängig von der Tageszeit. Wer das Tanzen versteht, versteht auch die Dominikaner und leistet so einen sehr wichtigen Beitrag zum interkulturellen Austausch. Um dieser Begeisterung näher zu kommen, empfiehlt es sich, das Tanzen zumindest ansatzweise zu lernen – am besten mit einem lokalen Tanzlehrer, der sich am besten in den großen Städten findet.

Die lokalen Produkte der Dominikanischen Republik: Ebenso wichtig für das Verständnis der dominikanischen Kultur, Traditionen und (nicht finanziellen, sondern materiellen) Reichtümer sind die lokalen Produkte des Landes, allen voran Kaffee, Kakao, Rum, Zigarren und Früchte. Vor allem Kaffee, Rum und Früchte sind auch bei Dominikanern sehr beliebt und gehören zum täglichen Leben. Von daher lohnt sich der Besuch einer Kaffeeplantage oder Rumfabrik. Alternativ gibt es auch den Chocolate Jungle in Salcedo, wo man in einem kleinen Lokalprojekt alles über die Kakaobohne lernen kann und zudem eine riesige Plantage mit allerlei Gemüse und Früchte zum Entdecken hat.

Was denkt Ihr, lassen sich mit diesen Vorschlägen nachhaltige Reisen in die Dominikanische Republik etwas mehr umsetzen?

Natürlich sind all diese Vorschläge und Ideen kein Freifahrtschein, anderswo kräftig die Umwelt zu belasten. Es bleibt dabei, dass die Karibik eine Fernreise-Destination ist – entsprechend emissionsintensiv bleibt die Anreise. Von daher können die hiesigen Aktivitäten und Möglichkeiten lediglich als Teilaspekt betrachtet werden. Zudem soll es als Denkanstoß dienen, wie man einen Urlaub in der Dominikanischen Republik nachhaltiger gestalten kann.

Man sollte einfach bedenken, dass jeder Schritt und jede Initiative sowohl dem Land als auch unserer Welt hilft. Keiner muss sein Leben und sein Reiseverhalten komplett umstellen, um auf einmal vollständig ökologisch zu leben, aber jeder sollte einige Dinge angehen, um uns allen auf dem Weg zu einer besseren und sauberen Welt zu begleiten. Wir als Industrie- und Wohlstandsnationen sollten dabei mit gutem Beispiel vorangehen, damit andere Staaten, vor allem Entwicklungsländer wie die Dominikanische Republik , in einigen Jahren folgen können.

Kann man nachhaltig in die Karibik reisen? Ein komplett nachhaltiger Urlaub ist aufgrund des Langstreckenfluges schwierig, doch im Urlaub selbst gibt es viele Möglichkeiten, einen nachhaltigen und ökologischen Tourismus zu unterstützen.

Wie sieht nachhaltiger Tourismus in der Dominikanischen Republik aus? Es gibt vor allem auf Makroebene viele Initiativen für nachhaltigen Tourismus in der Dominikanischen Republik. Einige Beispiele hierfür sind Wanderinitiativen, Eco-Lodges oder sich auf den Ökotourismus fokussierende Projektgruppen.

Wie kann ich meinen Karibikurlaub nachhaltig gestalten? In der Karibik, wo All-Inclusive Resorts weit verbreitet sind, sollte man versuchen, auf diese Form des Reisens zu verzichten und lieber lokale Gästehäuser sowie familiengeführte Unterkünfte bevorzugen. Dies ist in der Dominikanischen Republik problemlos möglich.

Wie funktioniert Ökotourismus in der Dominikanischen Republik? Ökotourismus fokussiert sich vor allem darauf, die Natur kennenzulernen, ohne diese zu beeinträchtigen. In der Dominikanischen Republik ist dies vor allem in Eco-Lodges, auf geführten Wanderungen oder mit ausgewählten Nationalpark-Guides möglich.
