Rory McIlroy secured his place in the history books by winning a record-setting fourth Hero Dubai Desert Classic (HDDC) title with a one-shot victory at the 35th edition of the illustrious event at Emirates Golf Club.

2023 – RORY MCILROY:

Three-time champ.

The Northern Irishman birdies last two holes to win the tournament by one shot after a fourth-round score of 68. The World Number One joins Ernie Els to lift the coveted Dallah trophy for the third time following his 2009 and 2015 triumphs.

2022 – Viktor Hovland:

First norwegian winner.

Became the first Norwegian winner of a Rolex Series event as he defeated Richard Bland in a play-off to win the 2022 Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic.

2021 - Paul Casey:

Casey’s four-shot win.

Paul Casey wrapped up his 15th victory on the European Tour with a confident four-shot win. With a birdie on the 18th, he closed with an exclamation point, sealing his title.

2020 - Lucas Herbert:

Australia day triumph.

The high winds and rain didn’t deter Lucas Herbert who proved the most resilient, triumphing in the first extended Desert Classic in a decade to play-off against Christiaan Bezuidenhout. The 24-year-old from Bendigo, Victoria, clinched the title on Australian Day making his achievement all the more remarkable.

2019 - Bryson DeChambeau:

The first international win.

Bryson DeChambeau dominates in Dubai for first International win closing 8-under-par 64 to set a tournament record. His 24-under 264 total for a seven-shot win bettered by one the 72-hole record Haotong Li set last year.

2018 - Haotong Li:

An asian first.

China’s Haotong Li birdied four of his last six holes to beat Rory McIlroy by one shot and become the first Asian winner of the event with a record score of 23-under-par.

2017 - Sergio Garcia:

Sergio storm.

Sergio Garcia completes a wire-to-wire three-shot win over Open champion Henrik Stenson after a closing 69, becoming the sixth Spaniard to win the tournament which saw high winds gusting in excess of 60 kmph, force suspension of play on Friday after the tournament top-draws Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods (after round one) were forced to pull out through injury.

2016 - Danny Willett:

Clutch putt.

England’s Danny Willett closes with a 69, highlighted by a pressure-packed 15-feet birdie putt on the closing hole, to finish 19-under par, winning his first Desert Classic, one shot ahead of compatriot Andy Sullivan and playing partner Rafa Cabrera Bello.

2015 - Rory McIlroy:

Roaring feat.

A good four shots ahead overnight, Rory McIlroy closed with a 70 to win his second Desert Classic on 22-under 266 total that matched the lowest score in the history of the tournament, set by Stephen Gallacher in 2013 and Thomas Bjørn in 2001.

2014 - Stephen Gallacher:

Successful defence.

After blowing a two-shot overnight lead, Scotland’s Gallacher made four birdies down the stretch en route to a 72 to finish 16 under and become the first player to successfully defend the Desert Classic on the event’s 25th anniversary.

2013 - Stephen Gallacher:

Stephen Gallacher of Scotland holes his approach to the par-4 16th on the final day for his fifth eagle of the week to hold off Richard Sterne and win his second European Tour title after a nine-year wait.

2012 - Rafa Cabrera Bello:

More spanish glory.

A scintillating 63 in the opening round sets up victory for Rafa Cabrera Bello. Records the third consecutive Spanish win and fifth overall.

2011 - Alvaro Quiros:

Aces galore.

The event, won by Alvaro Quiros, witnesses four holes-in-one, all in separate rounds, including one by the winner on the final day.

2010 - Miguel Angel Jimenez:

Nervy finish.

Evergreen Spaniard Miguel Angel Jiménez courageously edges out European No 1 Lee Westwood at the third play-off hole after the pair had topped the leaderboard at 11-under par, 1 shot clear of Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee.

2009 - Rory McIlroy:

Rory McIlroy records his first European Tour victory and first win on a major tour, aged 19 years when he gets up and down from the greenside bunker on the closing hole for the par he needs to edge past Justin Rose.

2008 - Tiger Woods:

Stunning comeback.

Five shots adrift going to the back nine, Tiger Woods produces an amazing birdie blitz and seals the title when he converts a 25-foot birdie putt on the final hole.

2007 - Henrik Stenson:

Swede success.

Playing all four rounds in the company of three-time champion, Ernie Els, Dubai resident Henrik Stenson birdies the final hole to edge out his celebrated playing partner and pre- tournament favourite Tiger Woods.

2006 - Tiger Woods:

The inevitable finally happens with Tiger Woods inscribing his name on the trophy at his third attempt. Two behind with two to play, he drives the 17th for birdie and picks up another shot on the 18th to force a play-off with Ernie Els where a par is enough to claim victory.

2005 - Ernie Els:

Ernie Els overturns a one-shot deficit on the final hole, rolling in a 20-foot eagle putt to edge out Stephen Dodd and Miguel Angel Jimenez for his third win in Dubai.

2004 - Mark O’Meara:

Tiger Woods returns, but it is his friend and mentor Mark O’Meara, who seals victory thanks to a stunning wedge to eight feet on the closing hole. Becomes the oldest champion at age 47.

2003 - Robert-Jan Derksen:

Dutch delight.

Ernie Els almost makes the first successful defence in tournament history but can’t get up and down on the last, handing the title to Robert-Jan Derksen, who is almost 600 places behind him in world rankings.

2002 - Ernie Els:

Ernie Els goes one better than Montgomerie’s 1996 Miracle Shot when he blasts a four-iron through the trees on the 18th hole on the second day to 30 feet. The resulting eagle sets the tone for the weekend and a four-shot win, his second in Dubai.

2001 - Thomas Bjørn:

Bjorn to win.

With a return to its original home, Thomas Bjørn displays a granite resolve to complement his huge talent to beat the world No 1. Plays all four days in the company of Tiger Woods who debuts in the Middle East. Bjorn’s 22-under par total is still a record – held jointly with Stephen Gallacher (2013) and Rory McIlroy (2015).

2000 - Jose Coceres:

Coceres windfall.

Jose Coceres of Argentina, who won $50,000 for his hole-in-one in 1992, lands the big one with a two-shot win.

1999 - David Howell:

Howell on a high.

The change of tournament venue to Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club produces a win for David Howell as he holds his nerve to win by a four from a surging Lee Westwood.

1998 - Jose Maria Olazabal:

Courageous olly.

Suffering from pharyngitis, Jose Maria Olazabal survived on yoghurt and fruit juice, but this failed to prevent the courageous Spaniard from going the full distance. Three off the pace going into the final round, Olazabal closes with a 69 to hold off Stephen Allan, Ernie Els and overnight leader Robert Karlsson.

1997 - Richard Green:

Green giant.

Richard Green beats two greats – Greg Norman and Ian Woosnam – in a play-off to become the first ‘lefty’ to land the title.

1996 - Colin Montgomerie:

Monty miracle.

Colin Montgomerie secures victory thanks to his European Tour ‘Shot of the Year’ – a 265-yard driver off the fairway on the closing hole, setting up a two-putt birdie and a place on the roll of honour.

1995 - Fred Couples:

Classic couples.

Fred Couples becomes the first American to win in Dubai. Stunning approach shots to set up tap-in birdies on the 9th and 12th highlight his victory after he missed the cut the previous year.

1994 - Ernie Els:

Course record.

Ernie Els shoots a sizzling 11-under 61 in the first round, highlighted by 12 birdies and just 21 putts, en route to his first European Tour success. This course record still stands, 20 years on. The affable South African since progressed to become the only three-time winner of the event.

1993 - Wayne Westner:

Wayne’s world.

South Africa’s Wayne Westner becomes the first non-European winner and posts his first European Tour win, seeing off a determined challenge from compatriot Retief Goosen and defending champion Seve Ballesteros.

1992 - Seve Ballesteros:

The great Seve Ballesteros is two off pace with six to play on the final day, single putts each of the remaining holes to force a play-off with playing partner Ronan Rafferty, which he wins thanks to a 15-foot birdie on the second play-off hole

1990 - Eamonn Darcy:

Ace in the pack.

Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez records the first hole-in-one in the tournament’s history, holing out on the 4th but Ireland’s Eamonn Darcy lands the overall honours with a 4-shot victory.

1989 - Mark James:

Making a mark.

The Dubai Desert Classic becomes the first tournament in the European Tour’s history to be played in the Middle East or Asia. Mark James walks into the history books, becoming the first golfer to inscribe his name on the trophy.

Events - Hero Dubai Desert Classic

Hero MotoCorp has today been confirmed as the new Title Partner of the Dubai Desert Classic, the second Rolex Series event of the 2024 DP World Tour season.

The Hero Dubai Desert Classic brings together Hero MotoCorp, the world’s largest manufacturer of motorcycles, and the DP World Tour’s longest-running event in the Middle East. The iconic tournament returns to Emirates Golf Club on January 18-21 for its 35th edition and will once again boast a stellar field headed by world number two and three-time Dubai Desert Classic winner Rory McIlroy.

The tournament was elevated to Rolex Series status in 2022 and next year will once again form part of the traditional ‘Desert Swing’, which annually attracts golf’s leading players to the region. The four-week series of events begins in January with the Hero Cup - a new team match play contest aimed at giving European players experience in the format ahead of the 2023 Ryder Cup – followed by back-to-back Rolex Series events in Abu Dhabi and Dubai and concluding at the Ras al Khaimah Championship.

The new agreement extends Hero MotoCorp’s long-term relationship with the DP World Tour which began in 2015 at the Hero Indian Open. Since then, Hero has also supported the Hero Challenge - a series of fast-paced showpiece events and short form social and digital content, which have taken golf to new audiences - as well as the Hero Open, which featured on the DP World Tour schedule from 2020 to 2022.

Hero MotoCorp will be Title Partner of three events on the 2024 DP World Tour International Schedule – the Hero Cup, Hero Dubai Desert Classic and Hero Indian Open.

Dr. Pawan Munjal, Chairman & CEO, Hero MotoCorp, said: “We continue to have a long -term partnership with the DP World Tour; and the Hero Dubai Desert Classic is an extension of this engagement. We are delighted to be associated with this iconic event and will now be supporting two much-awaited marquee tournaments in the Middle East – the Hero Cup and the Hero Dubai Desert Classic – as part of the traditional Desert Swing. It surely promises to be an exciting start to the season, and we look forward to seeing world-class golf on display.”

Simon Corkill, Executive Tournament Director – Hero Dubai Desert Classic, said: “We are delighted to welcome Hero MotoCorp as the new Title Partner of the Dubai Desert Classic as we once again prepare to host a global field at Emirates Golf Club.

“Hero have been supportive of golf, and particularly innovation in the game, for a number of years and we look forward to working together to continue the evolution of the tournament as we enter our second year as part of the Rolex Series.”

Keith Pelley, CEO of the DP World Tour, said: “It is my pleasure to welcome Hero MotoCorp as the new Title Partner of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. We are proud to further develop our long-term relationship with Hero MotoCorp and thank Dr Pawan Munjal for his continued support of golf in general and the DP World Tour in particular.

“January promises to bring yet another memorable edition of this historic event, as we once again welcome some of the best players in the world to Dubai for the second Rolex Series event of 2023, two weeks after an exciting season-opener in the new Hero Cup.”

The Dubai Desert Classic was the DP World Tour’s first event in the Middle East region in 1989, cementing the Tour’s relationship with Dubai and the United Arab Emirates. That association has developed significantly since then, including through the introduction in 2009 of the season-long Race to Dubai, and the ground-breaking evolution of the European Tour group’s long-term partnership with DP World, with the leading provider of global smart end-to-end supply chain and logistics solutions becoming the Title Partner of the group’s main Tour from the start of the 2022 season.

The historic event has been won by some of golf’s great names, including Major Champions Seve Ballesteros, Ernie Els, Fred Couples, Jose Maria Olazábal, Mark O’Meara, Tiger Woods, Henrik Stenson, Rory McIlroy, Danny Willett, Sergio Garcia and Bryson DeChambeau.

Here's the prize money payout for each golfer at the 2023 DP World Tour Championship

1802127553

Rory McIlroy and Nicolai Hojgaard walked away the big winners from this week's DP World Tour Championship. McIlroy won the overall points title for the fifth time while Hojgaard was the winner of the Tour Championship with a 21-under total.

David Cannon

An already memorable 2023 season on the DP World Tour for Nicolai Hojgaard—in which he played in his first Ryder Cup—got even more so on Sunday at the DP World Tour Championship. The 22-year-old Dane closed out the final round at the Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai with a eight-under 64 to charge past overnight leader Matt Wallace and claim victory with a 21-under 267 performance, two shots better than Wallace, Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland.

Hojgaard’s victory is the third of his career on the DP World Tour but his most lucrative. The first-place prize money payout was worth $3 million from an overall purse of $10.5 million. The payday from Sunday (€2,764,461 in Euros) amounts to more than 40 percent his entire career earnings to date on the DP World Tour (€6,380,134.75).

Here's the prize money payout for each golfer who competed in the DP World Tour’s season finale.

As the DP World Tour season enters its final stretch, with just five events remaining in the Back 9 Series and the upcoming playoffs, the stakes have never been higher.

Let’s take a closer look at the contenders who are solidly in the mix and those who are still vying for a position as the 2023-24 season approaches its climax.

Rory McIlroy (NI) currently leads the Race to Dubai Rankings, despite facing near misses in his recent outings in Northern Ireland and at Wentworth during the BMW PGA Championship. The pressure is on for McIlroy; it’s essentially his title to lose, but with so much competition, he’ll need to fend off challengers who are looking to capitalize on any slip-ups.

Thriston Lawrence (RSA) holds strong in second place, while Billy Horschel (US) rounds out the top three. With the final events looming, the battle for the coveted Race to Dubai crown is heating up, and players will need to step up their game to secure their spots and make a lasting impact.

Those currently holding the top 10 places to get Dual Cards for the PGA Tour for 2025 are Lawrence, Rasmus Hojgaard (Den), Matteo Manassero (It), Jesper Svensson (Swe), Niklas Norgaard (Den), Sebastian Sodeberg (Swe), Rikuya Hoshino (Japn), Tom McKibbin (NI), Romain Langasque (Fr) and Guido Migliozzi (It).

In addition to this, we must not forget the $6 million Bonus Pool for the Final Race to Dubai Rankings and Non-Member Race to Dubai Points List.

The leading 10 players from the list after the DP World Tour Championship will be eligible for a share of the bonus pool. Players must have participated in at least four Counting Tournaments in the current season, including the DP World Tour Championship, to be eligible for a share of this bonus pool.

There are some unusual names in this list – but these will inevitably disappear when they cannot physically or legally play in three appropriate tournaments plus the DP World Tour Championship.

The top 50 cut for the DP World Tour Championship sees Dubai resident Thomas Detry (Bel) in the 51st spot.

The top 70 cut to make the Play-off Series at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship sees Yannik Paul (Ger) occupy the precious last spot.

The current cut-off for keeping your DP World Tour card is set at 114.

Players of interest in various positions on the Rankings are: Dubai-based Tommy Fleetwood (Eng) in 13th, Justin Rose (Eng) in 21st, Ewen Ferguson (Sco) in 24th, LIV Golf’s Adrian Meronk in 26th, Adrian Otaegui (Spain), a spot back in 27th, Thorbjorn

Oleson (Den) in 32nd, Aaron Cockerill (Can) who represents The Els Club, Paul Waring (Eng) in 45th, Victor Hovland (Nor) in 62nd, and Rafa Cabrera Bello (Spain) in 108th.

With so much happening in the world of golf these days – with so much at stake – it looks an exciting finish to the 2023 – 24 DP World Tour Schedule on various levels – for a lot of players – whether it is keeping their card, getting into the top 70 for Abu Dhabi or the top-50 for Dubai.

Rory McIlroy wins DP World Tour’s season-long Race to Dubai

Rory McIlroy is the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai champion once again. McIlroy’s fifth season-long Race to Dubai title was clinched on points Sunday following the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa after Max Homa secured his first international victory.

Homa’s win set the stage for McIlroy, 34, to claim the European season-long championship despite not playing this week in South Africa. The result ensured that the world No. 2 Northern Irishman cannot be caught by Jon Rahm, who ranks No. 2 on the Race to Dubai into next week’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

McIlroy now sits more than 2,000 points ahead of Rahm, with just 2,000 points available to the winner of next week’s season finale at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai. His title was confirmed when Adrian Meronk failed to gain the necessary points in South Africa to keep the race alive.

McIlroy claims the crown in just nine DP World Tour starts this season, including three top tens in major championships. His win at the Genesis Scottish Open highlighted his 2023 campaign, adding to a Rolex Series victory at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic

Rory McIlroy wins 2023 Genesis Scottish Open

He becomes the first player in the Race to Dubai era (founded in 2009) to secure the title before the final event of the season, and adds to his Race to Dubai championships from 2022, 2015, 2014 and 2012.

With his fifth Harry Vardon Trophy, McIlroy sits three behind Colin Montgomerie’s record eight DP World Tour season-long titles, which includes a streak of seven straight wins from 1993 to 1999.

"I know Monty won eight of these things,” said McIlroy. “Hopefully, I can keep on the journey and try and get close to him.”

PGA TOUR star Max Homa won the Nedbank in Sun City, South Africa, by converting his overnight one-shot lead into a convincing four-stroke win. His stellar performance included a closing 6-under 66, culminating in a total score of 19 under.

Justin Thomas secured fourth, trailing Homa by seven shots.

Jimmy Reinman is a member of the PGA TOUR's digital content team. A native of Florida’s Space Coast, he is passionate about golf’s most emboldened characters and bizarre lore. He dreams of one day making center-face contact with a long iron.

The Forgotten Third Party in the Quest to Unify Pro Golf Has Entered the Chat

Bob harig | sep 23, 2024.

The DP World Tour was represented two weeks ago in discussions with the PGA Tour and Public Investment Fund (Rory McIlroy, pictured at this year's Genesis Scottish Open, was not).

The DP World Tour, until now, has not often been mentioned when the PGA Tour-Public Investment Fund negotiations are discussed.

The key players, mostly, are PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, members of the Strategic Sports Group such as John Henry and Arthur Blank, PGA Tour players like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy , and Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of the PIF, which funds LIV Golf.

Obviously there are more folks involved behind the scenes on all sides. But rarely is there a mention of the other tour involved.

The DP World Tour, which has a strategic alliance with the PGA Tour, is believed to have once turned down an offer from the PIF and was prominently named in the “framework agreement” that was shockingly announced in June 2023.

But rarely has any of the DP World Tour’s leadership been mentioned, which understandably led to concerns about whether the European-based circuit was being left behind.

Perhaps that was all misunderstood. Or maybe things are changing.

Guy Kinnings, the CEO of the DP World Tour who took over for Keith Pelley earlier this year, was at the recent meetings in New York between the parties. And even though there is no role for the DP World Tour in this week’s Presidents Cup, Kinnings is expected to be in Montreal where more meetings could take place.

It was Kinnings who revealed earlier this year in a session with reporters just after officially taking over that all of the parties involved had yet to sit together in the same room.

“I left those meetings seeing firsthand there in the room with all the right organizations, the right parties, with the right mindset, a sense of positivity from all parties involved to try and find a solution which would be good for the game,” Kinnings said during an interview session Friday with reporters at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth outside of London. “Long way to go. A lot of detail, complicated stuff to be done.

“But that has to be a good thing for all of us.  We all have to hope that that can succeed and, if that can succeed, then there are a lot of things ... that can get resolved.

“Obviously we know the PGA Tour extremely well, we work with them on a daily basis, but now knowing and working closely with Strategic Sports Group and Fenway (Sports) and guys like that, and also with Public Investment Fund, what you're doing is talking to the parties who, if they do come together, then you've got the right people to make something happen that I think will be really exciting for the game.”

Kinnings confirmed a Sports Illustrated report last week that  had the LIV Golf League attempting to reach a deal with the DP World Tour that would wipe out fines for LIV players in violation of tour conflicting-events rules in exchange for scheduling assurances, their appearances in DP World Tour events and a monetary amount to help with purses.

The offer was declined and Kinnings said it was due to the parties involved, including the PGA Tour.

“There was an approach, absolutely, by LIV,” he said. “But, at the end of the day, we're talking about a big discussion that requires all of the organizations. It will be so inappropriate to be off having a conversation, kind of a piecemeal thing while those discussions are going on, that involve just a couple of the parties.

“So we were very clear. We said, ‘Listen, we are always happy to listen to people and talk to everyone and whatever else, but it's got to be part of the big picture that's seeking to resolve the whole of the game.’”

Where that stands remains unclear.

Rory McIlroy said last week that he believed the U.S. Department of Justice was one factor in the long process as well as “differing opinions of the players.”

McIlroy suggested that as many as 50% of the players on both the PGA Tour and LIV Golf League are not in favor of a deal that would, in theory, unify the league.

Michael Kim was one who stepped up to say he’s not in favor of a deal, suggesting that it wouldn’t change much for him.

The one-time PGA Tour winner who was a college teammate of Max Homa’s at the University of California said on X (formerly Twitter) that a deal will only help the top players.

Do I want a deal? My short answer is No but I don’t care much. Whether the tour and LIV make a deal or not, it will not affect my bottom line. It won’t change my schedule in the slightest bit and won’t change my earnings. This realistically only affects the top 30ish golfers on… https://t.co/ReOQTyRYOa — Michael S. Kim (@Mike_kim714) September 18, 2024

“Whether the tour and LIV make a deal or not, it will not affect my bottom line,” Kim wrote. "It won’t change my schedule in the slightest bit and won’t change my earnings. This realistically only affects the top 30ish golfers on the PGA Tour and that they’ll probably make more money after this deal.”

Kim said he doubted having the best players in the world playing more often would create a big shift in TV ratings. “You can make the argument that if the players come back, it’ll be better for the PGA Tour, and bring more interest but I find that hard to believe.

"It’s not gonna be a big mashup, it’s only going to be for a few events with a big purse if I were to guess. How many LIV guys actually affect ratings and events? Phil (Mickelson), Bryson (DeChambeau), (Jon) Rahm?

"Will it increase ratings and earnings by more than 1%? Sure the first couple events would be cool but after that? I might be totally wrong but that’s my opinion. What’ll make a much bigger difference is how to make the TV product much better.”

Kim is among those who believe the LIV defectors need to pay some penalty to come back, a notion that is scoffed at in many circles due to the huge investment the PIF would be making into the PGA Tour Enterprises. If the PIF invests $1 billion or more it is difficult to conceive that there would be massive penalties enforced at a time when the goal is peace.

But that sentiment is real. Kim’s point is that 11 of the players who went to LIV Golf sued the PGA Tour.

"I just think there needs to be consequence to their decision to leave and SUE the tour,” he said. "You can call that petty but the LIV guys sued the PGA Tour mainly for their PIP (Player Impact Program) money. The same PGA Tour that was the reason why you even got the big payday in the first place. That’s just as petty in my eyes.

"FYI, just because there’s a deal doesn’t mean every LIV guy gets full status on the PGA Tour. There’s gonna be very limited crossover.”

We’ll see how that plays out, but it does give some insight into why putting a deal together is hardly simple.

Rahm, Spain and fines

Jon Rahm was sick over the weekend and unable to compete in the LIV Golf League Team Championship in Dallas. He had previously suggested that he would go home to Arizona following the event, with the possibility that his wife, Kelley, is induced. She is expecting a baby soon. And Rahm is scheduled to play in this week’s Spanish Open in Madrid, along with next week’s Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland.

All of that was made possible when Rahm appealed his fines to the DP World Tour, which effectively puts off any kind of penalties. DP World Tour CEO Guy Kinnings last week was hit with numerous questions on the topic, as it also applies to LIV player Tyrrell Hatton.

“The one thing we can try and do is be consistent and stick with the rules,” Kinnings said.  “These are the rules—they haven’t changed. People, if they work within the rules, then they have the opportunity to do things, and that's why you've got players playing in tournaments, which I'm glad they are. I'm pleased Jon is playing in Spain—delighted to have him playing in his national open, and you have other guys working within the rules and playing.”

The big question, of course, is what happens if their appeals are denied? And then might those appeals be heard?

Last year, the DP World Tour won a U.K. arbitration panel case that allows the circuit to enforce its penalty structure of competing in conflicting events. The sense is that, for that reason, the appeals will be denied. And it’s not even clear when the appeals would be heard.

“There's no fixed formula, so we’ll just have to wait and see how long it takes to reach that appeal process,” Kinnings said of the process, which could last well into next year. “The very clever lawyers who work for people will kind of handle all of that and, in the interim, the most important thing that we are also doing is continuing to have the ongoing discussions about the future, and those may or may not have some impact in that process.”

That was an interesting way of saying—as has been in the case in so many things impacting the world of golf—that a resolution to the ongoing negotiations might make such matters irrelevant.

The “Nearly Man” again

Billy Horschel appeared almost embarrassed when his eagle putt dropped into the cup on the second playoff hole at Wentworth, thus giving him his second BMW PGA Championship title in three years—and thus excruciatingly denying Rory McIlroy another chance at victory.

The eagle lands for @BillyHo_Golf 💪 He makes eagle on the second play-off hole to beat McIlroy after the Northern Irishman made birdie. #BMWPGA | #RolexSeries pic.twitter.com/QOnelwFomu — DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) September 22, 2024

McIlroy’s close calls this year are among the stories of the year in golf. His runner-up finish to Bryson DeChambeau at the U.S. Open. The great flurry on the back nine at the Olympics, only to find water and miss a medal. The second-place finishes in consecutive weeks now on the DP World Tour, including the Irish Open in his home country of Northern Ireland.

As great as the win was for Horschel, who has taken great pleasure in playing more overseas, it was another cruel blow for McIlroy.

“I think he’s the best player in our generation,” Horschel said of McIlroy. “He’s done so much for the game. You see the support he has here; you see the support he has around the world. He has the most crowds and supporters outside of Tiger Woods. He’s great for the game of golf.”

Somewhat lost in all of the difficulty of late is McIlroy’s overall record, which has seen him win more than 40 times worldwide, including 26 on the PGA Tour—the most of any active player not named Woods. He’s been a top-five player in the world for a majority of the last 15 years.

McIlroy was two shots behind when he eagled the 17th at Wentworth to tie for the lead. A birdie at the 18th would have won but he hit a poor approach shot—he noted he was fortunate to avoid the water—and settled for par. He then birdied the hole twice in the playoff, only to have Horschel beat him with an eagle.

“It’s golf and I’m playing well,” McIlroy said. “These things happen. It’s just the game is testing me a little more than it has has done in the past but that’s just fine. All I can do is keep showing up and trying to play the golf that I’ve been playing and soon or later it’s going to end up in a win.

“The nice thing is there’s next year and the year after that and the year after. If you think of my career as a 30-year journey, it’s only one year  in a 30-year journey and hopefully the other 29 are a little more productive or a ittle bit better. I have certainly had years where I’ve felt worse.”

McIlroy has three scheduled events left this year. He’ll play the Dunhill Links Championship next week in Scotland with his father. Then he’s down for the season-ending events in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Six of the best: The Race to Dubai movers after the BMW PGA Championship

There is more than one winner at events like the BMW PGA Championship and that proved to be the case once again at the third Rolex Series event of the season.

hEADER

While Billy Horschel will rightly take most of the limelight after becoming the first American to win the BMW PGA Championship twice, there were several other players leaving Wentworth Club with reasons to be cheerful.

The fourth event of the Back 9 featured a world-class field, climaxing in a dramatic three-man play-off as Horschel edged out Rory McIlroy and Thriston Lawrence over the West Course.

With 8,000 points on offer on the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex, along with European Ryder Cup qualification points to be won, there was plenty of incentive to produce a strong performance.

Here, we highlight some of the players who seized their chances and enjoyed results which will go a long way in helping them realise varying objectives.

Matteo Manassero

  • Race to Dubai Ranking: 5th
  • Official World Golf Ranking: 86th

Even before his first start at the BMW PGA Championship since 2018, Manassero was the comeback story of the season. A winner on the DP World Tour for the first time in almost 11 years at the Jonsson Workwear Open in March, the Italian has enjoyed a consistent campaign – highlighted by his eighth top ten of the season at Wentworth Club, where he became the youngest ever winner of the BMW PGA Championship in 2013. By finishing tied fourth in Surrey, the 31-year-old has climbed back inside the top 100 on the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time since 2014 and risen to fifth on the Race to Dubai Rankings, with his qualification for the DP World Tour Play-Offs guaranteed. He has also further strengthened his likelihood of competing again on the PGA TOUR, with the five-time DP World Tour winner now lying third on the DP World Tour’s list of ten players who will earn dual membership status at the end of this season. After also returning to the Major Championship stage twice and representing Italy at the Olympic Games, there can be no doubting that his comeback from the golfing doldrums is complete.

Manassero-2173548018

Thriston Lawrence

  • Race to Dubai Ranking: 2nd
  • Official World Golf Ranking: 47th

While he is without a win on the DP World Tour this season, there can be no denying that Lawrence has elevated his game to new heights this year. With back-to-back rounds of 65 over the weekend at Wentworth, the South African narrowly missed out on his maiden Rolex Series title. Still, it was his best finish in one of the DP World Tour’s prestige events. Coming on the back of his top five finish at The Open Championship and his runner-up finish in the Betfred British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo at The Belfry, the 27-year-old is now inside the world’s top 50 for the first time in his career. That is a significant achievement, with the doors that can open to compete in the sport’s biggest events. His career progression is set to continue next year by competing on both sides of the Atlantic, with his ninth top ten of the DP World Tour campaign – the most by any player – taking him to the top of the list of those targeting dual membership on the PGA TOUR. Now a five-time runner-up in the 2024 season, it would be no surprise to see him pick up a win before the campaign draws to a close.

"The dream ended with him with a two-foot putt for the win." @ThristonL 's girlfriend dreamt of his Sunday finish on Monday night. #BMWPGA | #RolexSeries pic.twitter.com/hmMdvbOSOk — DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) September 23, 2024

Matthew Baldwin

  • Race to Dubai Ranking: 54th
  • Official World Golf Ranking: 261st

Much is made of prize money in golf, but here is an example of where it can truly be career altering. In one week, Baldwin has bettered the prize money he has won in all but one season since he turned professional in 2008. Two birdies in his last three holes in the final round lifted him into a share of fourth place – his best result at a Rolex Series event. Coming into the week, the 38-year-old was 99th on the Race to Dubai but after climbing 45 spots – the biggest jump by any player in the field – he is now thinking about reaching the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, an event where he made his only previous appearance in 2014. In four of his last five DP World Tour starts, he has finished in the top 20. Having revealed he turned to being an Amazon delivery driver before the 2022 Challenge Tour season, the confidence from his big performance on home soil should help him continue to climb the world rankings and potentially add to his solitary DP World Tour title which came last season at the SDC Championship in South Africa.

Ugo Coussaud

  • Race to Dubai Ranking: 29th
  • Official World Golf Ranking: 223rd

The Frenchman is enjoying a rookie DP World Tour season to remember. In his debut appearance at the BMW PGA Championship, Coussaud carded four under par rounds at Wentworth to finish tied seventh and receive a prize cheque of more than €200,000. That is only bettered by his runner-up finish at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters in February. After climbing 11 spots to 29th on the Race to Dubai, the 31-year-old is the second highest ranked French player on the season-long standings after fellow Challenge Tour graduate Fredric Lacroix (17th). The DP World Tour Play-Offs in Abu Dhabi and Dubai will provide a platform for Coussaud - who turned professional in 2010 - to cap a memorable season, but before then he will hope to challenge for a first DP World Tour title.

Ugo Coussaud-2173732218

Marcus Armitage

  • Race to Dubai Ranking: 92nd
  • Official World Golf Ranking: 288th

His tied tenth finish on Sunday - which came quickly on the heels of a top 20 at the Amgen Irish Open - has gone a long way to ensuring he will retain his DP World Tour membership for the 2025 season. Now up to 92nd, he will now look to push towards the top 70 on the Race to Dubai at the conclusion of the Genesis Championship and thereby earn a place at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in November. After finishing tied fourth at the SDC Championship, Armitage then missed ten of his next 14 starts but has found form just at the right time when the rewards on offer were so meaningful. Affectionately known as ‘The Bullet’, the 37-year-old spoke openly in the Green Room about the importance of mental strength in ensuring he fulfils his potential, with his results in the last two weeks suggesting the Englishman can return to the form that saw him win the Porsche European Open in Germany in 2021. When you factor too that the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship - where he finished tied second last season - is still to come next month, things are looking up for Armitage.

Eddie Pepperell

  • Race to Dubai Ranking: 120th
  • Official World Golf Ranking: 385th

Like countryman Armitage, Pepperell has struggled to produce the form that we all know he is capable of this year. While still searching for his first top ten of the campaign, his tied 12th finish at Wentworth has lifted the fan favourite 30 places to 120th on the Race to Dubai Rankings. Many will hope the two-time DP World Tour winner can find another strong result or two in the coming weeks to ensure he finishes inside the provisional cut off of 114th to retain his card for another season as he looks to return to the level he showed when he won twice in 2018.
