Just returned from 5 day trip to New York, attractions passes that I had booked & printed were good to go, arrived at Statue of Liberty cruise, scanned pass not accepted , that's when it started , the 3 day pass was not accepted anywhere that we tried, both phone numbers had a not in service message, I then sent multiple emails but got no replies, I spent a good part of my trip trying to contact this company. The guy at Statue of Liberty site told me if it was up to him he would not entertain this company. I now know why, I spent a lot of my money on a pass that could not be used, but the thing that annoys me is the total lack of concern from the company, so please be aware of this company, use another sightseeing pass ,as this one is truly the pits, maybe I might get a response when they read this review, but I'm not holding my breath while I await that!!!! • sakurasunshine 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Overall it worked great for us and saved us $600 Thorough review incoming! We actually had generally an excellent experience with the sightseeing pass and would purchase them again if we were in NYC. I have rated it 4/5 because on the last day we used the pass, they added a whole load of new attractions, including things we had paid for ourselves already, so we were annoyed we missed out. The only attraction we had trouble getting into was Luna Park, when the pass updated above, it also added a note on the Luna Park pass item to say these were only being accepted from late May. We were annoyed the app didn't state this earlier as we had planned specifically a day in Coney Island and it basically got wasted (and it's not exactly a short trip from Manhattan to Coney Island) However aside from this, we were able to visit everything we wanted, and in the end saved about $600, so I can't complain too much (even if we paid for Luna Park, we would have still saved $hundreds overall). There was more we had planned to do, such as Edge and the Radio City tour but we were just too tired, however we could have gotten even more value out of the pass. We got the passes for six days. A few attractions we had to book onto in advance (Statue of liberty tour, 9/11 tour, AMNH, ESB, Grand Central tour, speakeasy tour, potion making @ The Cauldron) - I'd 100% recommend this so you don't miss out. We got our passes about 6 weeks in advance. There were a couple of attractions (NY Aquarium and Central Park zoo) which were 'call to book' which we did not book onto in advance even though the website said we should (due to us not having a US phone number). On both attractions they still let us in no problem, however I think this was fine in low-season. In the summer I'd definitely book. When going for the Statue of Liberty tour, a few people had another of the passes (I think GoCity) which didn't include the ferry, so they had to pay out of pocket, which really got some of them angry, whilst us with the sightseeing pass were just chilling knowing we had it included! Just something to bear in mind if you are debating between passes. Activities we did from the pass and our thoughts: 9/11 walking tour - our guide Jonathan was fantastic, probably the best tour guide we had in NYC, amazing tour. Doesn't include 9/11 museum but we learnt so much. Definitely worthwhile. AMNH - It was a good museum, probably more kid orientated. I would probably not go again as we have some amazing museums which are very similar in UK (and free!), but it was interesting, at the very least a throwback to the 'Night at the Museum' movie! Big Bus - Great way to see the city and get around during the day (last buses run at 4PM and 5PM for the different loops). The audio commentary is fine, learnt some cool things, but it was nice just to sit in the sun and watch the city go by! Bowlero - includes one game and some arcade credit. We had a great time, it was a good way to kill an hour, but bear in mind, like many places in NYC, there is a waiting list you join when you arrive. Expect a long wait if it's busy, we waited about 20 minutes with a few people in front of us. Central Park Zoo - This is a decent little zoo. Great way to kill an hour if you love animals, although it was heaving with school kids on daytrips. The Red Pandas, Snow Leopards, and Parrots were best. ESB - contrary to what a lot of people told me, this was probably my favorite observatory, especially for photography, as others like TOTR and 1 WTC had glass in the way of the view which means any photograph has glare and reflection. There was also some interesting things on the way to the top about how the ESB was built. Only thing worth noting about ESB is the queues at the top for the lifts to the observation deck were very long. We got the stairs instead but it's a heck of a workout. Just be aware you maybe in for some cardio or a long wait. Intepid museum - great for those interested in planes/boats/military/submarines. My partner is very interested in military so this was great for him, but even for me the space exhibit was very good and it was cool to go in the submarine and on and aircraft carrier. They have space shuttle Enterprise (free to see with pass) and a concord (NOT included in pass). Please note you have to be very physically mobile and reasonably slim to go on the submarine, before going on they make you jump through a hole in the wall to see if you are agile enough and can fit. Also avoid if you are claustrophobic. NY Aquarium - it's fine, I've definitely been to better aquariums, I've also been to much worse. I probably wouldn't go again, there are much better aquariums in the UK, but it's fine if you are in the area and have a few hours to kill, or are interested in marine life. It's modern, clean, there are some cool things to see. Grand Central Tour - Great little tour and so much to learn about Grand Central, our tour guide, Joe, was fantastic, very engaging and fun. They give you little over-ear headphones so you can hear the guide speak as it's very loud inside GC. One World Observatory - An amazing observatory with great views over NYC. It's the tallest building in the western hemisphere. The lift to the top was very sleek and quick, you don't need multiple lifts like ESB. Bear in mind to pick a day with good visibility - it's an extremely tall building so is often in the clouds. We were lucky as our hotel was a few minutes walk away, so we just popped in early one morning when it was sunny. Statue of Liberty tour (and ferry) - Fascinating tour includes Statue of Liberty Island and Ellis island. The tour guide tells you a bit about both on each island then lets you wander for a while. Our tour guide Charles was great and knew so much about the history of the statue and the area. I love that he had a personal connection to Ellis Island. Speakeasy Pub and Prohibition Tour - Another fantastic tour. This is not child friendly or prude friendly, a great tour of three modern and fun speakeasys (drinks/food not included). Our tour guide, Kamala, was fantastic, she was so much fun and so knowledgeable. It was also my birthday (as well as two others on the tour) and she arranged for us all to get a free treat at the second bar! The Cauldron Potion making - This was so much fun, especially if you like all things witchy/Harry Potter. So much fun to make your own potion cocktail (this place does have child friendly cocktails!). Staff were really fun and our 'potion master' Tee was great and so much fun. You only get to make one potion with the sightseeing pass whilst full paying guests get to make two. TOTR - The Rock is probably the best observatory if you want to see the 'iconic' sights of NY. ESB and 1WTC are good (in their own ways), but they are very iconic themselves so when you go up these observatories, you miss out on seeing them themselves. The literal top of Rockefeller center is pretty unassuming and boring (the fountain at the bottom is more where it's at with this one), so it's a great observatory to go up and see all the other iconic buildings all together. We went late at night so there was no queue, but I saw people queueing out the door during the daytime. It was nice to go up at nighttime and see the skyline all lit up. Side note: at one point we considered doing the Escape room but upon checking the website it was very booked up. If this is something you want to do, I would follow the website guidance that reservations are strongly recommended. Read more Written April 24, 2024
  • manjith2014 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Woodbury Common Bus Timetable Incorrect I'll start with the bad. My wife and I purchased the 4 attraction pass, and decided to venture out to Woodbury Common. The bus out and ticket process was fine. However, as soon as I received my electronic tickets, I received an email with amongst other things, the return times back to Manhattan. Once our shopping trip was complete (bought nothing!!), we stood at the bus stop with other passengers waiting for the bus to arrive.....the time of pickup passed by, and we waited for the next bus.... again no bus arrived. By this time we were cold and agitated. We then looked at the official bus operators timetable, and there was a discrepancy between the times listed on their website versus the times listed from the email!! We weren't prepared to wait for another 1.5hrs, so we ended up sharing an Uber back to Manhattan at a cost of $150usd (split between us and another disgruntled customer). Have emailed twice and no response, despite their own 48hr sla to respond!! On a positive, other attractions using the pass included the hop on & off bus, The Rock, The Statue of Liberty cruise & One @ WTC all worked perfectly. Read more Written March 25, 2024

  • X699NPcraigh 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Data security issues/Other peoples passes on my account!!! This one is a little different. I purchased three 4 day passes on 31st January. The payment was successful and I received the email confirmation. However, I received two additional emails for pass purchase confirmation which were not mine. Even though no money had been taken from my account for these, they were visible on my list of passes on my sightseeing account. There is more. I then checked my personal details on my account and they were not mine. Somehow, my account had been updated with somebody else's details, but not by me. I was very concerned by this and emailed [email protected] immediately with the details. I received a response the next day stating they had been removed from my account, but when checking they were still there. I replied straight away and provided details of this. It's been over five weeks now and the majority of my chase up emails have been ignored with the only update provided is that it's been passed to IT. Given this is a date security issue, I am shocked how bad the the lack of customer service on this has been. If by some chance anyone from sightseeingpass monitors these reviews, the reference for my issue is INF00527794. No other information is being shared, as the system should have everything I've provided. I am sick and tired of sending chaser emails and would like to be contacted directly on the email address linked to the issue on your system. Read more Written March 9, 2024

This pass seemed confusing at 1st (DOWNLOAD APP) , but SAVED over $100. - however we didn't get to use it's full potential due to timing!! First off. . .if you are still reading, I'm a small town mom of 2 and am a REAL reviewer (not paid in any way); taking time to write a full review because I found very little online about this pass, that seemed real. We opted for the full access "Day" passes because we planned to do as much as we could during our short trip. When I bought and downloaded, I hit immediate snag (the verification codes would not send for validating bookings) & thought, "oh no what did I just buy!!!" But waited till office reopened & called the 212 phone number. Spoke to an agent (honestly, not the kindest, most accommodating individual) but. . . IT WORKED!! I booked a reservation & got an instant email confirming it. First thing I booked via phone call was the Empire State Building @ $0 cost to me with pass (usually $64. Adult - $54. kids) Then saw the ability to shuttle from airport to hotel - so booked it. Saved over $67.02 Then I called a 3rd time & finally got a helpful agent who issued me the verification code the app wouldn't send. And was able to book the rest myself or at the actual place in NYC by scanning QR code that was issued via purchase (email-pdf): I STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU SCREENSHOT THESE CODES for easy scanning use (verses opening the app at each place.) ((American Natural History Museum: $0 cost - saved $56. MoMA:$0 cost - saved $43. Madame T.: $0 cost -MAKE a RSVP!!!! - saved $ 119.98 Big Bus Tour - Hop on & off: $0 cost - saved $144.00 We tried for Top Flight but didn't RSVP & they wouldn't take us because it was less than 30 mins prior to closing and had "met their pass quota"; whatever that meant. My kiddo was not interested In the 3 other places I had hoped to use; so planning is aust to get an even bigger SAVINGS for what seems to be a steep cost. ***PAY FOR THE INSURANCE - I agree that it is their scam of padding cost but it is also their loop hole to getting a REFUND!!!!! We went to New York for one day and found this pass in combination with hop on hop off bus. We paid usd144 per person and didn't manage to do a single tour as most tours were unavailable in busy times. As it was busy, standing in line we ran out of time to find out which tour is available. We tried ferry to statue of liberty, cruise on Hudson, world trade Center, empire state Building, all unavailable to use the pass. This company should not sell this ticket in busy times in this case! You cannot access this information until after the tickets have been purchased. Additionally a lot of the activities you have to line up on the day to tune the sight pass into a ticket to the location you cannot book in advance online. (such as the rockerfeller). Best Washington DC City Passes

dc tourist pass

This post compares the different tourist attraction discount passes and ticket combos that are available in Washington, DC, with tips on choosing the right one for you.

Our guides have provided more than 1 million tours around the world, and they are often asked about the best ways to save money while traveling.

In addition to helpful advice from our own guides, we will also include tips and tricks from members of our Facebook Group to give you a fair and balanced idea of whether or not these passes are worth the price.

  • Flex Passes
  • All-Inclusive Passes
  • Do You Need a Pass : Advice from Locals and Travelers

The short answer is that most people don't find a sightseeing pass necessary for their first visit to DC. With so many free things to do in the city, a discount pass just isn't needed.

Many of the big ticket items that used to be included in discount passes no longer participate in the program, such as the International Spy Museum.

However, if you were planning on doing the included attractions anyways, sightseeing passes may save you some money on the admission!

If you’re looking to save money on some of the most popular attractions in Washington DC and you want to see some of the best sites tied to one founding father or another, there are several tourist passes you might want to consider.

And these passes can save anywhere from 20% to 50% off general admission prices – or more!

Washington DC City Pass

Most of these passes include admission to the following notable activities at a discounted rate:

  • Hop on Hop off Bus Tour
  • Potomac River Cruise
  • George Washington's Mount Vernon
  • Some additional tours and activities are specific to each pass.

Here are a few of the most commonly asked questions about saving money in DC:

Types of Passes

There are several different passes to choose from, and we have broken them down by type.

Just follow the links for more details, but here is a quick summary.

Explorer Pass vs Sightseeing Flex Pass

There are passes, which we refer to as flex passes, that allow you to choose a set number of attractions and tours.

These passes usually give you the choice of 3, 4, 5, or more options from a large pool of activities and attractions.

While you can save a lot of money with this type of pass, it’s best for the most expensive services.

Since you’re paying one flat price, it’s almost like paying the same low price for each activity.

The only problem is that these passes also include activities that are already quite affordable.

If you were to use a flex pass for something cheap, you’d be paying more than necessary for admission.

However, if you’re interested in some of the more expensive tours, these passes are a lifesaver!

All-Inclusive City Pass

Alternatively, you can also purchase an all-inclusive pass which includes admission to dozens of attractions for a specific amount of time (1, 2, or 3 days).

While this is a great way to save a lot of money, you have to use it for as many activities as possible to get the best possible discount.

Much like the flex pass, you’ll save the most money by using this service for expensive activities.

That said, if you can also fit cheaper attractions into your itinerary, it won’t cost you anything more!

Washington DC Explorer Pass Benefits

The next option is a prepackaged pass .

This service starts with a specific set of included activities for one flat price, and it includes the option of either 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 additional attractions.

This is a great choice for anyone who doesn’t want to get carried away or plan out too many activities while visiting Washington DC.

Finally, numerous hop-on-hop-off bus tour companies offer combo deals .

It can be difficult to decide which, if any, is right for you.

Therefore, we recommend deciding on what you want and having time to do it first before choosing which pass you would like.

Remember Our Tours

Don’t forget about all of our walking tours of the city! You can save as much as you like on our name-your-own-price tours.

FLEX PASSES

This section will cover each of the flex pass options available in Washington DC.

We include details about how much money you can save and advice about the best way to use these services.

Washington DC Sightseeing Flex Pass

Choose a package with either 1, 2, or 4 Attractions + a Big Bus Hop on Hop off from a list of 10 top attractions.

You have 7 days to visit the number of attractions you purchased.

All passes include their One Day Express hop-on-hop-off double-decker bus tour and the opportunity to see historical sites such as the following:

  • White House
  • Washington Monument
  • MLK Jr. Memorial
  • Lincoln Memorial
  • Thomas Jefferson Memorial
  • United States Capitol Building
  • Library of Congress
  • And more...

Much like the Explorer Pass, this service will have you paying one flat price for a set number of activities, meaning each attraction will cost the same.

Here are the prices you can expect to pay with a breakdown of the cost per attraction in red:

  • Bus + 1 Attraction: $64/Adults | $49/Children
  • Price per attraction: $39.5/Adults | $29.50/Children
  • Price per attraction: $24.75/Adults | $17.25/Children

Purchase the Washington DC Sightseeing Flex Pass or learn more .

The main thing to keep in mind with this service is that the hop-on hop-off bus tour included with each pass normally costs about $45 per person.

When you factor that in, it’s easy to see how even the 1 Attraction option is a good deal because that would mean you were paying only $9 more for the additional activity!

We’ll get a bit deeper into how much you could save with this pass, but first, let’s get into some of the included attractions with this service:

  • Bike Monuments Tour | $44
  • Capitol Hill Tour | $44
  • Potomac Riverboat One-Day Water Taxi | $30

While some of these attractions might not seem like a great deal when you consider that the lowest price per attraction is $22.50, you have to remember that the bus tour is included with each pass.

To give you an idea of what we mean, take a look at how much money you could save with a 4-Attraction Pass:

  • Hop on Hop off Bus Tour | $54
  • Bike the Monuments Tour | $54
  • Normal Price: $211
  • Price with Pass: $89
  • Savings: $132 (58% off)

As you can see, you can actually save more money with this service than with the Explorer Pass!

If that’s still not good enough, the prices for the 2 and 4-Attraction Flex Passes have a 20% discount.

To get the discounts, use our exclusive promo code: FTBF .

The only catch is that the Sightseeing Pass does not include as many activities as its competitors, so it might not be the best option for you if it doesn’t have any attractions you find desirable.

Much like their competitors, this service is valid for 30 consecutive days from the time it is activated.

Their refund policy is also very generous, as any unused passes purchased with insurance can be fully refunded for any reason.

Another popular pass was the GO WASHINGTON DC Explorer Pass. This pass stopped being offered in 2020 and has yet to return in 2024.

ALL-INCLUSIVE DAY PASS

The following section will cover any all-inclusive passes available in Washington DC, including details about how much money you can save and advice on the best way to use these services.

Currently, there is only one all-inclusive pass in Washington DC, but that may change in the future!

Washington DC Sightseeing Day Pass

In addition to their flex pass, this company also offers an all-inclusive option which includes admission to all of their attractions and activities for a specific amount of time (1, 2, or 3 days).

The advantage to this pass is that you don’t have to pick only a handful of activities – you can literally enjoy every service included for one flat price!

Although we went over some of the attractions in our flex pass section, here are a few more locations and tours included:

  • George Washington’s Mount Vernon Exterior Grounds | $28
  • Potomac Riverboat Water Taxi | $40
  • Washington DC Scavenger Hunt | $20
  • Memorials Bike Tour l | $40

While some of these might not be worth it with the flex pass, the only factor to consider with an all-inclusive pass is how much fun you can fit into a day!

The amount you save will depend entirely upon how much you use the service, and you’ll enjoy the biggest discount by purchasing the longest pass.

With that said, let’s take a look at the prices for this pass with the cost per day highlighted in red below:

  • 1 Day Pass: $74/Adults | $70/Children
  • Price per day: $74.50/Adults | $69.50/Children
  • Price per day: $49.66/Adults | $46.33/Children

Purchase the Washington DC Sightseeing Pass or learn more .

The lowest price per day is going to be about $66, and with multiple activities that cost more than $40, it’s not difficult to see how you could easily save money with this pass.

That said, let’s break things down a bit with a sample 3-day itinerary to give you a sense of just how much money you can save using this service:

  • Big Bus Hop-on Hop-off Tour | $63
  • Scavenger Hunt | $20
  • Artechouse | $32
  • Escape Gape | $4 2
  • Potomac Riverboat Water Taxi | $30
  • Capitol Hill Tour | $4 5
  • Normal Price: $232
  • Price with Pass: $149
  • Savings: $66

If you add a few activities or change some of the attractions on this itinerary, you could easily save more than 50% off general admission prices.

Washington DC Sightseeing Pass

This pass is a great option if you plan to do as much as possible while visiting Washington DC.

If you’re only interested in a few of the activities included, you may want to consider another option instead.

Unlike their flex pass, this option is only valid for the consecutive allotted time (1, 2, or 3 days).

That said, they do offer the same money-back guarantee for any pass purchased with insurance!

Old Town Trolley

Much like their competitors, this company also offers hop-on-hop-off service in Washington DC.

Old Town Trolley is currently offers a hop on hop off trolley tour with 15 stops throughout the city. With free rebounding through the day and trolleys every 30 minutes, this is a popular option.

The trolleys have driver guides so the drivers will give you the history and trivia of what you are seeing. You have the benefit of a live guide, but the guide is also focusing on the road so is not always able to answer questions spot something unique as you drive by.

Purchase Old Town Trolley combo packages or learn more .

ONE DAY HOP ON HOP OFF TICKET:

  • Adult: $44.95
  • Child: $32.95

Old Town Trolley is the only option to tour inside Arlington National Cemetery by bus/trolley. You can buy single ANC Tram tickets for $19.50 a person, though we think our Arlington Cemetery walking tour is a much better option!

This is a somewhat more recent tourism company, and they frequently offer combo deals with multiple activities at a discount.

Currently, they only have one package:

Washington DC Bike Rental & ARTECHOUSE

  • Washington DC Bike Rental | $22
  • $41.58 per person
  • Purchase this combo package or learn more.

Should You Get a Washington DC Discount Pass?

There are differing opinions on this topic, but it would be dishonest to ignore the fact that a lot of travelers on our Facebook Group have indicated that these passes might not be necessary.

It's not so much that you won't save money with these services, but rather that most of the popular attractions in DC are entirely free to visit.

dc tourist pass

As you can see, even prominent users of tourist passes suggest that it might not be as useful to get one in Washington DC.

Other users note that public transportation in the area is entirely free, so you can even get around with ease at no additional cost.

Even so, some visitors will still choose to get a tourist pass, as there are some activities that you just can't enjoy for free.

dc tourist pass

We recommend getting a Washington DC tourist pass if you have already seen all of the free major attractions and you want to see even more.

In other words, if this is your second trip to the area, it might make sense to get a discount pass.

However, if this is your first time, you'll find most of your time will likely be taken up by activities and landmarks that are entirely free to visit.

To get an idea of how many fun activities you can enjoy without paying a dime, check our full post covering free things to do in Washington DC .

Washington DC Metro Fares, Explained

The Washington DC Metro may seem complicated to Washington, DC visitors. However, it is actually quite simple once you get the hang of it.

DC Metro Fares Explained & WMATA Q&A

How do Washington DC metro fares work?

The Washington DC Metro seems like a really confusing fare system. What you pay depends on how far you travel and whether it’s peak time or not. The longer the distance, the higher the fare. Peak periods roughly coincides with rush hour. It’s from open to 9:30 in the morning and 3:00 to 7:00 in the afternoon every weekday. And it’s worth noting that this applies to when you tap into the system, not when you tap out. This is often why you’ll see people standing around at 6:55 in the afternoon.

For example, say you’re starting at Metro Center during an off-peak hour and riding the Silver Line towards Virginia. If you ride one stop to McPherson Square you’ll pay the minimum fare: $2.00. In fact you can ride as far as Rosslyn and still only pay the minimum fare. Then the fare starts increasing, $2.10 for Court House, $2.25 for Clarendon, and it keeps going up until you hit the maximum fare of $3.85 at McLean.  So, you can go all the way to the end of the line for $3.85.

But of course that’s only during off-peak hours. If you ride during peak hours then the price goes up across the board, as high as $6.00 if you ride all the way to Wiehle–Reston East. It’s a good idea to avoid peak hours if you can. However, it is understandable that they make up about 40% of a total weekday. So, it’s not always completely reasonable to avoid them entirely.

Should I buy a 1-day or 7-day Washington, DC Metro pass?

For a typical tourist using the Washington DC Metro, your options in 2018 are: a 1-day pass for $14.75, a 7-day unlimited pass for $60.00, and a seven-day short ride pass for $38.50. The short ride pass only covers you for rides of up to $3.85 each (which is basically all non-peak fares and short peak fares).

So unfortunately, there is no universal answer to this question and you need to evaluate your own situation, figure out how many days are going to spend in DC, and how often you’re going to be planning on riding Metro.

The 1-day pass is almost never a good deal for anybody. But the 7-day pass could be a good deal if you are going to spend a decent amount of time in town and you’re going to be riding the Metro at least twice every day. Otherwise, it’s just easier to pay per ride and top up your SmarTrip card as you need to.

Should I order my SmarTrip card online before my trip?

The answer to this one is “no” with a few exceptions. In the past, you could only buy SmarTrip cards at a limited number of Washington DC Metro stations, from a limited number of vending machines ,or you had to go to a place like CVS to get one. It was a real pain.

Now, you can get a SmarTrip card at any Metro station so the transnational pain is mostly gone. If you buy a SmarTrip card online, you have to order it far enough in advance to make sure that you receive it before you leave for your trip. However,if you buy it too far in advance and then forget that you have it and don’t pack it, then you basically just bought an expensive souvenir.

There are a few exceptions. The first is if you want a commemorative SmarTrip card. They have these, for example, for the inauguration every four years, when a new museum opens and for our sports teams.

The other exception is if you want to use it to ride the bus but don’t really think you’re going to be riding the Metro. So for example if you want to ride the MetroBus from Dulles airport or BWI, and you don’t want to mess around with cash, then, you could order your SmarTrip online and have it loaded up and ready to go.

Destination Pass allows Detroit Metro Airport visitors to go through security without a plane ticket

By Andres Gutierrez

May 17, 2024 / 6:04 PM EDT / CBS Detroit

ROMULUS, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) –   We're just a week away from kicking off Memorial Day weekend, marking the start of the summer travel season for the Transportation Security Administration, and they are preparing for a record number of passengers.

Some travelers may be in for a surprise from their loved ones at Detroit Metro Airport, where people without boarding passes can now go through TSA checkpoints.

dtw-destination-pass.jpg

If you're picking someone up at DTW, you'd usually meet them at baggage claim or the curb, but that wasn't the case before 9/11 when almost anyone could walk up to the gate and see the planes up close. Keith McCree remembers those days.

"They'd print out the boarding pass just to get you to the gate, the family boarding pass, and allow them to sit with you while you wait. And if the plane was delayed, they'd be there. And if the plane got canceled, they could actually take you back home. So that was an advantage," McCree said.

In 2019, the Wayne County Airport Authority found a way to restore some of that lost convenience and comfort.

"And what people had to do is submit their name, date of birth, and a lot of personal information 24 hours before their visit," Randy Wimbley, spokesperson for the Wayne County Airport Authority, said.

But the COVID-19 pandemic paused the program and then came the Destination Pass kiosks.

All visitors have to do is scan their driver's license or passport, and they receive a pass instantly, allowing them to go through the TSA checkpoint.

"I think it's very sufficient; I think it's very convenient, and I don't see anything wrong with it. I like it," Sierra Brown, a traveler, said.

Those under 18 must be with an adult.

"It really allows people to experience all that DTW has to offer again: more than 100 shops and restaurants, and local breweries like Atwater and Jolly Pumpkin. We've got Chick-fil-A and all of your franchises that everyone is familiar with. We have more concessions coming in with our concessionaires program," Wimbley said.

The passes are gaining popularity; since October 2023, the kiosks have printed about 27,000.

"More people are using the program with the kiosks, and they're not having any issues, you know, with parking or what have you. And so that's not at all a deterrent," Wimbley said.

The Destination Pass kiosks at the Evans and McNamara terminals and the Westin Hotel next to McNamara are up and running seven days a week from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Mayor bowser announces district to receive $100.6 million in bead grants to fund digital access and training.

(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) announced that the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has awarded the District over $100 million in federal funds through the Volume II Initial Proposal under the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program.   “By ensuring District residents, businesses, and institutions have access to affordable, high-speed internet – and supporting them with trainings on digital literacy and workforce development – we can give more people in the District a fair shot, and remain a leader in tech careers, talent, and innovation,” said Mayor Bowser. “We are grateful for the support and partnership of the Biden-Harris Administration for their focus on digital equity so that together we can break down barriers and close the digital divide.”

OCTO’s DC State Broadband and Digital Equity Office (SBDEO) will utilize the $100.6 million in BEAD funding in order to increase internet access to residents as well as provide beginner-to-advanced digital literacy training and high-value workforce development training – with a focus on Wards 5, 7, and 8. Through these initiatives, the District is strengthening its training-to-career pipeline for residents, further pushing forward the District’s status as a tech leader.   “DC is a hub for technology and innovation,” said Interim Chief Technology Officer Stephen Miller. “And we want to be able to properly train and connect our residents to opportunities with the leading tech companies that we have here in Washington, DC.”

The Bowser Administration has defined four goals to guide the actions of last-mile broadband deployment and digital equity:

  • Make high-quality, affordable, high-speed internet accessible to all residents – whether in homes or local community anchors – and drive the equitable adoption of internet service.
  • Provide sustainable, low-cost, or no-cost devices and IT support, enabling applications to the residents who need it most.
  • Create navigable pathways for DC residents across the spectrum of digital literacy and digital skills.
  • Use increased access to broadband, devices, and digital skills to set up strategic partnerships and initiatives with DC agencies to achieve goals related to economic development, the workforce, and health outcomes.

View DC's State Digital Equity plan at s.dc.gov/techtogether .   Through strategic investments that support local entrepreneurs and make DC an attractive place to open and grow a business, Washington, DC has become a top city for tech and has widely been recognized as a leader in technology careers and talent, including:

  • #1 Hub for Tech Careers ( Forbes , 2024)
  • #1 Most Innovative State ( Wallet Hub , 2024)
  • A Hotspot for New AI Jobs ( Axios , 2024)
  • #4 Top Tech Talent Market U.S. & Canada ( CBRE , 2023)

Release: gottheimer amendments to add secondary cockpit barriers to airplanes and tackle flight delays pass in reauthorization of faa , amendment helps safeguard airplane cockpits against terrorists. legislation also makes air travel more affordable for families.

WASHINGTON, DC —  Today, Wednesday, May 15, 2024, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer’s provisions to add secondary cockpit barriers and study flight delays in the tri-state area passed the House of Representatives, as part of the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024. The bill, which passed by a vote of 387-26, reauthorizes the Federal Aviation Administration, which oversees the safety and efficiency of air travel in the United States, for five years.

Gottheimer’s first bipartisan amendment, co-led by his Problem Solvers Caucus Co-Chair Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-1), will require inexpensive, commonsense secondary cockpit barriers on all commercial aircraft. The installation of secondary cockpit barriers on all commercial passenger flights is the only 9/11 Commission recommendation not yet implemented. In 2018, Gottheimer and Fitzpatrick helped pass and sign into law the  Saracini Aviation Safety Act , which required the installation of secondary barriers on new passenger aircraft. Secondary cockpit barriers are key to preventing the hijacking of airplanes. On 9/11, terrorists stormed the cockpit knowing that the doors would be opened early in the flight. And until today, that flight deck remained vulnerable when the cockpit had to open. This amendment will keep terrorists out of the cockpit.

Gottheimer’s second amendment will require the Comptroller General of the United States to conduct a study on flight delays in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

“I am proud to have two of my amendments, focused on adding secondary cockpit barriers and tackling flight delays in the tri-state area, included in the bipartisan FAA reauthorization. My amendment on secondary cockpit measures is of special importance to me and all those in North Jersey who saw the plane hijackings on 9/11. This amendment is a critical step to help prevent 9/11 from ever happening again. ”  said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5).  “My amendments — and this entire reauthorization — will help keep air travel safe, reliable, and affordable for Jersey families. I’m also glad this legislation strengthens protections for consumers and helps make air travel more affordable for families, which I’ve been fighting for as part of my Clear and Simple Airline Agenda.”

Gottheimer has long advocated for increased airline consumer transparency, as part of his  Clear and Simple Airline Agenda . In April, Gottheimer announced his  ETA Act  to help protect customers from surprise fees when purchasing a ticket, requiring airlines to communicate all fees upfront. The FAA reauthorization includes commonsense provisions to protect consumers and increase transparency, including a right to refunds, a guarantee of fee-free family seating, and better communication with consumers in the case of delays and cancellations.
