Castles & Cruises

An archipelago of more than 1,800 islands creates an unparalleled water recreation land. Scenic narrated boat tours meander through channels, between islands and under bridges from spring through fall, sharing the history of the region.

Tour companies take visitors past fairytale castles, historic lighthouses and stately mansions that take you back to the area’s heyday as a playground for the rich and famous. Stories of pirates and bootleggers, industry titans and secret societies await. Sightseeing cruises can include stops at Boldt and/or Singer Castle , and Rock Island Lighthouse. For a different option, take a lunch cruise or pair an evening sunset cruise with dinner on board.

Tours depart from several communities along each side of the border. Cruising companies regularly host thematic cruises centered to fun, education and experiencing the culinary assets of the region.

Went on the Boldt Castle two nation tour. Very friendly captain and narrator. The price is very reasonable compared to going from Canadian side. We would definitely recommend this trip to all!!

My husband and I had a great time on this trip. We were able to get an up close view of the Thousand Islands. Capt. Jack and Mike were great. They shared a lot of knowledge with us and even more laughs.

The tour was great! The Captain and tour guide were very informative, friendly and funny. I only wish we had more time to explore Boldt Castle. Would definitely recommend the trip and wold come back!

This trip was well worth it. Our Captain Ron and Tour Guide Ken were both very friendly, knowledgeable, and interesting. The views that we had from this boat were breathtaking.

Thousand Islands Cruise From Kingston (Our Boat Tour Experience)

Links in this article may earn us a little money if you book/ order stuff. More here

Choosing A Thousand Islands Cruise From Kingston Can Be Tough!

Want to explore the famous Thousand Islands region in the Saint Lawrence River? Great idea!

This beautiful region is a piece of classic “Canadiana” and – as a simple day trip from Kingston – there’s no better way to explore it than by water on an island cruise!

As a refresher, the 1000 Islands are a geographically and historically significant area of the St. Lawrence shared between Ontario (Canada) and New York State (United States).

That said, there are a few cruises to choose from and it can be confusing to find the best island cruise for you. Some cruises offer breakfast or dinner while others vary by tour boat prices and lengths.

Being Kingston locals for several years, we did the 3 Hour Thousand Islands Riverboat Cruise from Kingston . Eric had already done the Kingston sunset cruise, but Lisa hadn’t been out on the water yet.

So, in this guide, you’ll see what we experienced and get an overview of different 1000 Island boat tours available that leave from Kingston. If you want to leave from Gananoque, you can check here for Gananoque Boat Line . You can even tour from the USA with Uncle Sam Boat Tours.

* Friendly Disclosure: We paid for the boat tour we did ourselves – this is not a sponsored post .

Classic 3 Hour Thousand Island Riverboat Tour (Our Tour)

man in tshirt with sunglasses at front of boat and water behind on thousand islands cruise.

If you want to experience the 1000 Islands, the cruise that we did is probably the best bet.

This cruise explored an area called The Admiralty Islands (which was beautiful) and is entirely sightseeing so you don’t get off the boat. Tour times for this longer tour are 10:30 am and 2:00 pm. We did the 10:30 am.

There is also no meal included – but you get live entertainment and amazing views of the historic waterway.

This tour also comes with audio commentary (which is really interesting) in English and there are audio guides available for Spanish, Chinese, English, French, German, and Japanese!

Overall, we really liked our tour – it was well organized and enjoyable. There’s a shop on-board where you can buy alcoholic drinks, non-alcoholic drinks, and even snacks/food like popcorn.

This tour can actually be done with a breakfast or brunch add-on but this is a different ticket altogether.

You can read about our sightseeing tour in more detail below – we’ve included LOTS of photos so you can get see what we saw on tour!

⇒ Check out the exact sightseeing cruise we went on here

Kingston & 1000 Islands: 1.5-Hour Discovery Cruise

large stone tower in distance with kingston city waterfront behind.

If you’re short on time but want to get out on the Kingston waterfront, you can always do a 1.5 Hour Kingston Discovery Cruise. This cruise is on a smaller boat than the Island Queen (what we took) called the Island Belle.

To compare, this cruise focuses much more heavily on Kingston and not so much on seeing the Islands. The tour covers the rich history of Canada’s first capital city and the waterways that shaped our nation – which is admittedly very interesting!

Since the cruise is shorter, they offer more times throughout the day. You can book to leave at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, 3:00 pm, or 5:00 pm. The 5:00 pm wouldn’t be quite at sunset but close enough and certainly not as hot as midday!

This tour also comes with audio commentary in English and audio guides for Spanish, Chinese, English, French, German, and Japanese!

⇒ Check the times to book your 1.5 Hour Island Discovery Cruise

Sunset Dinner Cruise

If you’re keen to have a meal and experience the sunset on the water, you can book a sunset dinner cruise. These cruises make use of the long, flat, glass-domed roof boat called the Island Star.

Cruises are 3 hours long and tables by the windows book up in advance so be sure to lock in your cruise if you know you want this option!

⇒ Check the prices and times here

Our Thousand Islands Cruise Experience

large old steam ship with smoke stack sitting beside concrete pier.

Since there are quite a few options, we went on a boat tour to show you exactly what it’s like.

The tour itself is run through Kingston Destination Group – the same group that runs the Tourist Information Centre downtown in Confederation Park and handles lots of Kingston tourism tours/activities like the famous Kingston Trolley Tour .

Overall, we really liked our tour. We knew it was sightseeing which meant 3 hours of sailing around in the sunshine and learning about stuff. That worked perfectly for us – and many others on the boat also enjoyed the tour!

We booked the boat cruise through GetYourGuide (a really good travel company) because the official tour booking website used to be very outdated.

That said, you can also book in person when you get to Kingston. However, the summer months are VERY busy in Kingston so some of these tours might sell out if you wait.

Personal advice: If you know the day you want to cruise, we’d suggest booking in advance.

After having booked online, we just walked up to the Kingston ticket pavilion before the cruise, showed the email voucher we got and received our paper tour tickets. Simple.

If you want to learn more about the tour and/or booking process, you can check out our boat tour here .

What You’ll Need For This Boat Tour

girl with sunglasses with white railing and blue water behind.

If you do end up on this sightseeing cruise, here’s a shortlist of the things you might want to have with you for a great day on the water. Some of these items are weather dependent, but in general:

  • A hat – with a string to stay around the neck in wind
  • A windbreaker jacket (in the spring or fall)
  • A water bottle
  • Hair tie (if you have longer hair)
  • Seasickness pills (it’s not too rough, though)

Thousand Islands Cruise Itinerary

So, to give you a better idea of exactly what we experienced on our island cruise, here’s a detailed breakdown of the day.

The boat tour was advertised as 3 hours long and it ended up being a little longer (by about 10 minutes) because the boat had to slow down in the high water around the islands.

Pick-up/Drop-off

stone tower with city hall and boats at city waterfront.

We started our day at the Kingston waterfront. If you are unfamiliar with Kingston, head for the massive building called Kingston City Hall.

On the side that faces the water, you will see a large green park called Confederation Basin/Park. This is the park full of attractions and the Kingston Tourist Information Centre.

In the water, (that’s Lake Ontario), you’ll see many small boats at the Kingston waterfront docks. Looking at the water, look left and you will see the large tour boats (you physically cannot miss them) and the round ticket pavilion that says “BOAT TOURS” on the side.

The address for this ticket office and island cruise boat pier is: 1 Brock St, Kingston, ON K7L 2Z1, Canada

The tour boats leave from this above address and NOT where you catch the ferry to Wolfe Island – which is located at Barrack St, Kingston, ON K7K 2X9, Canada.

large open window with blue lake water outside and sky above.

As expected, we went into the office, exchanged our online voucher for paper tickets, and walked to the nearby pier where a line was forming to get on the boat.

We were 30 minutes early and it’s wise to be early so you get good seats on the boat and so you aren’t running down the dock as it sails away!

We got our tickets checked, got a souvenir photo taken, and climbed aboard. We immediately went to the top deck where it’s open to the sun and the air but you can sit on the first deck (shown above) or the second deck for some shade and still have amazing views.

At the end of the day, the boat returned to this exact spot on the pier. We got off, thanked the crew, had a look at our souvenir photo (didn’t buy it but honestly ALMOST did), and walked downtown for dinner and a drink!

Heading For The Thousand Islands From Kingston

historic building on shoreline across the blue water with blue sky above.

Once we pushed off from the pier, they went over safety procedures thoroughly which was really good. With that many people aboard it was good to know there was a plan in place if things went bad out on the water.

The entertainer introduced himself – he was an older gentleman who played classic tunes on both a banjo and a guitar.

He was hooked up to the loudspeaker so he could wander the decks and take requests from people. He was really good – and provided some comedic commentary.

sailboat in blue water with land in back ground while on boat cruise.

Heading out of the Kingston waterfront, the entertainer shared time with the audio guide which was a narration over the loudspeakers.

The guide was actually really interesting and shared historical dates, locations of events, shipwrecks, famous battles, you name it! We learned a ton in the first leg of the trip.

We passed Wolfe Island and left Kingston behind as we headed up the Saint Lawrence. The cottages/homes on the shore were lovely and the whole area, in general, is just really, really pretty.

It was the perfect day weather-wise, too. We actually went inside for a bit because we didn’t want to get TOO much sun!

If you want, you can grab a snack or a drink at either “shop” they have on both the first and second interior decks. Families with kids were snacking on popcorn and some people even cracked a bottle of wine or a beer.

We didn’t buy anything so we don’t know about prices – but many people took advantage of the food and drinks for purchase.

Arriving At The Thousand Islands

tip of boat approaching green islands with blue water between.

After about an hour we arrived at the edge of the Thousand Islands. It does take a bit to actually get there but the ride was lovely (and lively) so we didn’t mind.

On this cruise, you learn all about the island chain – and explore a region of islands called the Admiralty Islands.

orange safety ring on side of boat deck with green island behind.

We learned that different parts of the islands were named by different people or groups and so that’s why there are different naming conventions all through the region! In any case, the Admiralty Islands were lovely.

Touring The Thousand Islands

small cottage at blue water's edge with green land behind.

Once “in” the islands, the boat started weaving between big ones, small ones, etc. The audio commentary started up and provided the names of the important islands and the history of it.

Usually, there was a historic cottage or building on it built by someone from “back in the day” – each with a small story attached.

blue waterway through green islands with blue sky above.

The fact that basically every island had a short story attached made the experience so much richer. If they said “here’s a bunch of islands” it would have been pretty but boring.

However, learning the names and getting a sense of the history of the area was very worth the trip… and we just scratched the surface!

It was also easy to see the islands and snap photos from any of the decks so don’t feel like you have to stand at the top the whole time.

The large port windows make for excellent photo-taking spots – and these seats are closer to the bar and the snacks!

cottage and green trees on island with blue water around.

At one point, we could even see the waterfront of Gananoque in the distance. The small town – being even closer to the actual islands – is also rich with history.

We’ll write about Gananoque on this site soon because even Eric hasn’t explored the town in-depth yet!

Returning To Kingston

canada flag on white pole flying off back of boat with blue water below.

Once we zigzagged around the islands for a while, we left the grouping of islands to enter the big river again. And back to Kingston we went.

The entertainer started up again to play a few songs and take requests – and we enjoyed the sunshine and snapped as many photos as we could.

red roof tower on green island with city shoreline in distance.

Eventually, you start to recognize the Martello Towers (the stone towers with red tops built by the British) and know that you are back in the waters near Kingston.

You actually learn more on the way back but not as much from the audio commentary as heading out for the day.

Once we got back – as we mentioned above – it was great to see Kingston from the water for a change and snapped lots of photos.

We docked, waited not too long to get off, had a look at our souvenir photo, and went downtown for a drink! The captain and crew were there to see us off and it was a great way to end the day.

  • Deer Island, about two miles (3.2 km) north of Alexandria Bay, is owned by the secret society of Skull and Bones.
  • A pair of islands southwest of Grenadier Island are collectively called Zavikon Island .  A popular but incorrect story is that the larger island is in Canada, and the smaller of the two is located in the United States.  The foot bridge between them is the shortest international bridge in the world.   Zavikon Island is entirely in Canada and belongs to the Leeds and Grenville municipal unit.
  • Ironsides Island is home to one of the largest great blue heron rookeries in northern New York State.  Over a thousand herons return to the the island to breed every April.  The uninhabited island is closest to Alexandria Bay, New York.  Owned by The Nature Conservancy the island has been listed as a National Natural Landmark since 1967.

  • Dark Island  is located along the Saint Lawrence Seaway, is lower (eastern) Thousand Islands region, near Chippewa Bay.  Dark Island is considered the Town of Hammond, in St. Lawrence County, New York.    Singer Castle on Dark Island, NY  is privately restored and is open to the public.  Frederick Bourne originally had the castle constructed with hidden wine cellars and secret passageways so he could spy on his guests while hiding his  liquor from prying eyes during the prohibition era.
  • The Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, New York features antique wooden boats that were built and used in the region.  The museum also offers exhibits on the area's maritime culture and is home to La Duchesse, George Boldt's luxury houseboat.
  • Thousand Islands Boat Museum in Gananoque, Ontario is a hands-on waterfront museum celebrating the heritage of the St. Lawrence River.
  • Thousand Island Dressing "presumably comes from the Thousand Islands between the United States and Canada in the St. Lawrence River."  Several versions of the dressing's origin exist however Sociologists have not been able to determine the true origin of its inception.  One version describes how a fishing guide's wife created the condiment for her husband's seafaring dinner.  Later this recipe was shared with George Boldt, who built Boldt Castle and was the proprietor of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel at the time.  George instructed the hotel to put the dressing on the menu in 1894.

5 Affordable Cruise Vacations to Book — Plus How to Find the Best Deals

Here's what you need to know to save money on your next cruise.

cruises in 1000 islands

Best Affordable Cruise Lines

How to find the best cruise deals, tips for saving money while on board.

Courtesy of Norwegian Cruise Line

Cruising has become increasingly popular in recent years, and it’s easy to see why. This form of travel is incredibly convenient (read: no need to pack and unpack), and everything you need can be found right on board — ultimately taking the stress out of trip planning. Plus, with hundreds of ships at sea across dozens of lines, there’s a cruise out here for every type of traveler. Fortunately, cruising doesn’t have to cost a small fortune, and many budget-conscious travelers may opt to set sail for their next trip. Below, we’ve rounded up the best cruise lines offering affordable fares coupled with value-packed inclusions to stretch your dollar further. We’ve also tapped some expert cruise specialists to share their top tips and tricks to help you save money both on and off the ship.

Here's everything you need to know to book an affordable cruise vacation.

Virgin Voyages

Courtesy of Virgin Voyages

This adults-only cruise line from Richard Branson — which also happens to be a Travel + Leisure World’s Best Award winner — offers excellent value. In fact, according to T+L A-list cruise advisor and Q Cruise + Travel founder and president Rob Clabbers, Virgin Voyages fares “include more than on most mainstream large-ship cruise lines.” For example, he says, “Virgin fares include internet access, gratuities, all meals — there are no cover charges for its restaurants that on most other lines would be considered specialty restaurants.” Beverages like soft drinks, coffee, and tea are also included, as are snacks, mezze at the aft terrace, and group workout classes. Best of all, there are no pricey beverage packages. “Instead,” says Clabbers, cruisers — or, as Virgin calls them, sailors — can buy their own reasonably priced drinks (think: beers from $6, $10 cocktails, and wines by the glass under $11) a la carte. Additionally, with some promotions , the cruise line throws in a “ bar tab ” credit that can be used towards drinks.

Princess Cruises

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Another World’s Best Award winner — and WBA Hall of Fame Honoree, no less — this fan-favorite ocean line is renowned for refined ships, serene ambiance, and exceptional service. Moreover, per Clabbers, passengers can choose from “optional packages to help customize a passenger’s trip that provide savings over buying things separately.” For an extra $60 per day, consider Princess Plus, which offers perks like Wi-Fi for one device per guest, gratuities, fitness classes (two per sailing), and beverages like bottled water, specialty coffee, soft drinks, and juice. Alternatively, for $80 per day, passengers can spring on the Princess Premier package, which features the same beverages plus specialty dining (two per sailing), unlimited fitness classes, premium desserts, reserved theater seating, and Wi-Fi (four devices per guest).

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line is a favorite among families of all ages for its over-the-top entertainment and activities (think: go-karting, Broadway-caliber productions, and so on). “While Norwegian Cruise Line may price slightly higher than some of its competitors, you need to consider the Free at Sea package,” says travel advisor Jennifer Travis of Marvelous Mouse Travels . She goes on to describe the promotion as a “game-changer when it comes to cruising” since it includes perks like a “free open bar (up to $1,400 in savings), free specialty dining (up to $180 in savings), free Wi-Fi (up to $200 in savings), and a $50 discount on excursions.” Other Free at Sea perks include 70 percent off second guests, free third and fourth guests (on select dates), and free airfare (per the cruise line’s website: “ Pay airfare for one guest, and you'll automatically lock in roundtrip flights for two ”). Also, you can’t go wrong with the Free at Sea Plus package, which includes a wider selection of beverages, more specialty dining, unlimited Wi-Fi, and additional shore excursion credits. Before booking, be sure to check the line’s full selection of deals , which run the gamut from half-off deposits to $150 cruise credits and more.

Royal Caribbean

Courtesy of Royal Caribbean

Zip lines, water slides, surfing simulators, ice skating, rock climbing walls: Find all this and more aboard (most) Royal Caribbean ships — and, best of all, they’re complimentary! Ideal for fun- and adventure-loving travelers of all ages — read: kids and kids-at-heart alike — it’s pretty much impossible to be bored while cruising on this World’s Best Award-winning mega-ship line . Additionally, according to Travis, Royal Caribbean “offers some of the best short itineraries,” some of which clock in at under $200 per person for two-night sailings. Longer itineraries, including a seven-night Bahamas sailing aboard one of the line’s newest ships, Odyssey of the Seas , clock in at under $600 per person. The line also offers an abundance of deals , including up to $600 off sailings, 60 percent off second guests, and more.

Carnival Cruise Line

Courtesy of Carnival Cruises

“ Carnival Cruise Line is known for its competitive pricing without cutting back on the onboard activities or various dining options, thus making them an attractive option to budget-conscious cruisers,” explains Travis. For example, many itineraries, including a four-night Bahamas cruise from Miami , clock in at just over $150 per person. Additionally, says the travel advisor, “Carnival sails to a wide variety of destinations from so many local ports that you almost do not need to fly to your cruise ship anymore, which is another huge savings given the cost (and stress) flights can add to any vacation.” Keep an eye out for frequent flash sales for even more savings.

Booking early is an easy way to save on your next cruise vacation . “Typically,” says Travis, “the best pricing on a cruise is when the schedule is first released.” And, while you could wait for a last-minute deal, “you may not get the room category that you want.” Similarly, Clabbers says that flexibility is key when it comes to finding — and scoring — the best cruise deals . For example, he previously told T+L that if you are “very flexible and are looking for a standard room on a large ship on an itinerary that repeats week after week, you are more likely to find a promotional fare.”

Conversely, giving up some of that flexibility sometimes pays off. According to Clabbers, select cruise lines will offer lower fares to those who opt for a nonrefundable deposit instead of a refundable one. Finally, you may also consider cruising in shoulder season or even low season. Sure, the weather won’t be perfect, but the fewer crowds and cheaper fares more than make up for that, especially if you’re on a budget.

While your tab can quickly rack up once on board, there are several savvy ways to save money. For one, consider bringing your own booze. According to Travis, “Many cruise lines allow their guests to bring a specific amount of alcohol or nonalcoholic beverages onboard the ships, which can help save you money while you are on the ship.” Additionally, Michele Benard , another travel advisor at Marvelous Mouse Travels, advises packing your own necessities from home — like Advil, Tums,  motion sickness medicine, and after-sun lotion — as opposed to buying them on board at a much higher price. You’ll also want to skip the souvenirs at the onboard gift shop, which tend to be more expensive than those you’d find in port.

Benard also recommends taking advantage of “all the free activities on the cruise ships,” which can include everything from water slides to trivia game shows. Pro tip: “Stay onboard during a port day, and the lines won’t be as long.” On a similar note, spa treatments tend to be less expensive on port days, so those craving some R&R — that is, sans breaking the bank — may consider booking a service during this time.

Finally, says Clabbers, save money on your next cruise by enlisting the help of an onboard cruise consultant to select your next sailing. “You will typically receive an onboard credit or savings on your next cruise, and your own travel advisor will be alerted so they can help you plan your vacation.”

Plan Your Cruise With AAA

With many cruise lines now catering to the single crowd, going on a cruise as a single adult can be a great way to meet interesting people to make new friends, new connections and lifelong memories.

No matter what you envision from your dream singles cruise, you can find a ship and a series of destinations that will create unforgettable memories. There are a lot of options to explore, however and the sheer range of choices can quickly feel overwhelming. To help, we've highlighted several of the best cruises for singles. Keep reading to learn what, exactly, sets these expeditions apart.

1. Celebrity Millennium: Bali, Malaysia and Thailand

Many singles gravitate towards exciting adventures in exotic destinations such as Bali, Malaysia and Thailand, which hold appeal simply because they provide such distinct scenery and such powerful cultural experiences.

Not all singles are willing or prepared to navigate these destinations on their own, however and this is where the Celebrity Millennium comes into play: an upscale cruise removes the hassle of planning and, instead, encourages you to relax in style.

This particular Celebrity Millennium adventure spans nearly two weeks, incorporating a unique blend of serene island adventures, cosmopolitan exploration and meaningful temple visits. Onboard, globally inspired menus and resort-style lounges are to be expected, along with plenty of adults-only spaces that will appeal to singles.

2. Celebrity Apex: Norwegian Fjords

If Norway's iconic fjords are on your bucket list, you can't afford to miss this awe-inspiring Celebrity Apex trip . Departing from Southampton, the eight-night cruise meanders along the coast of Norway, hitting pleasant spots such as Geiranger or Kristiansand for spectacular scenery and outdoor adventures. Side trips are available and, with up to ten hours docked, there is plenty of time to explore at your own pace.

Accommodation options abound and, when traveling alone, the staterooms' king-size mattresses feel extra spacious. An adults-only solarium will appeal to relaxation-oriented solo travelers, while abundant dining and entertainment options make it easy to find and connect with new friends.

3. Celebrity Summit: Grand Heartland Adventure

If you're struggling to choose between glamorous onboard experiences and outdoorsy experiences on land, you're in luck: Celebrity Summit provides the best of both worlds with its various Cruisetour offerings. There are many excellent options that depart from Vancouver, Anchorage or Fairbanks — but the Grand Heartland Adventure is worth considering if you crave something new.

During the Grand Heartland Cruisetour, you'll explore the stunning Inside Passage by cruise ship, before docking in adventure-oriented destinations such as Juneau and Sitka. From there, you'll continue to observe national treasures such as the Hubbard Glacier. Further exploration takes place aboard a glass-domed railcar and even a riverboat.

There's also a lot to experience onboard. The AquaClass stateroom represents a true oasis for single travelers, but the exclusive cocktail lounge and martini bar also warrant a visit. With nearly two weeks of cruising and exploration, you'll have plenty of time to unwind on your own but can also form fast friendships with similarly adventurous travelers.

4. Celebrity Edge: Taste of Luxury

Cruises for singles over 50 often emphasize the finer things in life, like elevated cuisine or exquisite wines. These sophisticated details are in abundant supply aboard the Celebrity Edge, which offers a decidedly elegant experience with its Taste of Luxury tour. Although often frequented by retired couples, Celebrity Edge's trips work well as singles cruises.

Available for three or four nights, this remarkable journey begins in Sydney and primarily emphasizes curated on-board experiences. That being said, there are enticing opportunities to explore while docked in Tasmania. With such glamorous suites, restaurants and clubs on board, however, the best attractions can be enjoyed without ever leaving this luxury cruise ship.

5. Disney Wish: Bahamian Cruise from Port Canaveral

Don't assume that Disney cruise adventures are only for kids or families. If you are a proud Disney adult, you can make amazing memories aboard a thematic cruise for singles. This is a popular vacation among theme park enthusiasts, who enjoy a dose of Disney magic while also finding valuable opportunities to indulge and relax.

Disney Wish's three-night Bahamian cruise is also an excellent option for singles who crave a sea-based experience but only have a few days to spare. Yes, young travelers will be around, but there are plenty of adult-only spaces, including sports bars, dance clubs, dedicated pools and even an onboard spa and salon. Musicals, 3D films and fireworks encourage you to embrace your inner child.

6. Oceania Cruises: In the Path of Cartier — Boston to Montreal

As we've mentioned, smaller ships provide some of the best cruises for singles over 50. Not everyone desires a river-based trip, however and with Oceania Cruises , there is no need to choose between exclusivity and ocean liner grandeur.

A signature experience can be found aboard Oceania Cruises' iconic Nautica ship, which is calming, yet elegant. Echoing the journey of the famed explorer Jacques Cartier, this tour provides a powerful introduction to Quebec, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and New Brunswick.

The land-based excursions are highly educational and, of course, beautiful to behold, but there's also a lot to love on board. Belgian chocolate, Bulgari amenities and turndown service await, with many accommodations also providing spectacular views. Open-seating dining makes it easy to interact with other vacationers while wine-tasting and guest lectures promise plenty of onboard enrichment.

7. Oceania Riviera: Ancient World Wonders — Athens to Istanbul

Another appealing option for singles who prefer slightly smaller ships, Oceania Cruises' Ancient World Wonders tour provides stops at some of the world's most iconic locations, such as Santorini and Corfu. Adventures in Dubrovnik and Istanbul can also be expected. On board this remarkable vessel, you'll gaze in awe at the Lalique Grand Staircase and, in general, enjoy a refined ambiance.

Be prepared to try new flavors and forms of expression as you explore unique offerings such as the Artist Loft and Culinary Center. Deep relaxation awaits at the Aquamar Spa or within your luxuriously contemporary stateroom or suite. This ten-night voyage provides plenty of time to lose yourself in the grandeur of the ship and the treasures of Greece, Montenegro, Croatia and Turkey.

Everything You Need to Know About Iceland Cruises

cruises in 1000 islands

Iceland , known as the land of fire and ice, offers travelers a unique blend of history and unparalleled natural beauty. From the lively streets of Reykjavik and Akureyri to the remote fjords of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula and the rugged cliffs of the northern coast, this is a trip to remember, whether you’re traveling with family, as a couple, or solo.

While driving down the Ring Road is an excellent way to discover the interior of the country, Iceland cruises offer a unique opportunity to take in the breathtaking landscape of volcanoes, geysers, tiny Nordic villages and dramatic waterfalls in just a few days. To us, there is simply no better way to experience everything that Iceland has to offer .

However, planning cruises to Iceland is not always easy. The weather, the activities you want to join and the differences between ports and cruise lines are all factors to carefully consider before booking. Read on to learn everything you need to know to choose the cruise that best suits you and your travel companions.

What Is the Best Time of the Year for Iceland Cruises?

Zodiacs in Iceland (Photo: Ben Sousa/Cruise Fever)

Iceland cruises are only available for five months out of the year, from early May through the end of September. In winter, ice covers vast expanses of the island, making travel to some areas impossible, including many of the fjords and some of the northern regions.

The best time for Iceland cruises temperature-wise is summer. However, main ports such as Reykjavik, Akureyri and the fjords can get busy. If you want to avoid the crowds, visit in late spring, when temperatures are “milder” (average daily highs reach 38 degrees Fahrenheit by late March) and winds die down.

Snow slowly starts to melt in April after the long winter months, and the first signs of grass and flowers appear. Cruise ships can again call at all ports, and many of the attractions that remained closed during the coldest months reopen. By the end of the month, there are about 16 hours of sunlight per day, and daily temperatures hover around 43 degrees F.

Spring and summer are also the best seasons for whale and bird watching , hiking and horseback riding. The fjords and fields are in full bloom, and waterfalls carry all the water from melted snow, turning them into deafening, stunning sights.

Sudden weather changes are common in fall, which brings overcast skies, wind and rain. Indeed, September is the wettest month of the year, but snow usually arrives later in the season, around mid- to late October. Despite the rain, it is still a fine time for cruises to Iceland for those who don’t mind the cold. Just remember to pack lots of layers and waterproof clothing and shoes.

Things to Do on Cruises to Iceland: Dive into Nature, Visit Breweries, Learn About the Vikings and More

Fagradalsfjall volcano in Iceland

Dramatic natural landscapes dotted with volcanoes, geysers, rugged cliffs, roaring waterfalls and blinding glaciers make cruises to Iceland a nature lover’s dream. This is not a destination for those hoping to spend days visiting museums and shopping, but rather for travelers more interested in taking in the scenery and doing outdoor activities such as hiking and horseback riding.

While it's possible to see whales and seabirds almost year-round in Iceland, minke and blue whales, as well as porpoises, puffins and terns are more easily spotted in the late spring and summer months.

Thousands of birds flock to the craggy cliffs on the northern and western coasts to nest, making for a spectacular sight in the late afternoon. The waters around the island are popular feeding grounds for all kinds of marine life.

However, a cruise to Iceland doesn’t need to be all about nature -- all itineraries offer tons of other fun things to do, from learning about the Vikings and the herring industry to discovering the local beer culture and relaxing in a stunning hot spring.

Can You Cruise to Iceland from the U.S.?

LGBTQ Pride month in Reykjavik, Iceland (Photo: Chris Gray Faust)

Most Iceland cruises depart either from Northern Europe -- typically from the U.K. , Denmark , Sweden or Germany -- or circumnavigate the country round trip from Reykjavik. However, it is also possible to cruise to Iceland from the U.S. In particular, Boston and Cape Liberty are the two main ports for these itineraries, which also often include Nova Scotia and/or Newfoundland and Greenland .

Itineraries that depart from the U.S. spend just a handful of days in Iceland. Those looking to explore multiple destinations in the country may want to consider a European departure port instead, or an Iceland-only cruise. Non-stop flights to Iceland are available from New York and other U.S. airports.

Do All Cruise Lines Offer Cruises to Iceland?

The main cruise lines offering cruises to Iceland from the U.S. include Celebrity , Regent Seven Seas , Norwegian , Oceania , Viking Ocean and HX (Hurtigruten Expeditions) . These are typically longer itineraries (10 days and up) that make their way up the East Coast to Canada , and from there on to Greenland and finally Iceland.

In addition to more time in Iceland, starting in Europe provides travelers with many more options in terms of cruise lines and itineraries. Some of the main cruise lines offering Iceland cruises from the other side of the pond include Silversea , MSC , P&O , Princess , Crystal and Fred Olsen .

Iceland Itineraries: Do All Iceland Cruises Call at the Same Ports?

Akureyri, Iceland (Photo: TRphotos/Shutterstock)

The ports your cruise ship will be calling at depend on length and departure point. Itineraries that begin in Reykjavik and circumnavigate the country often call at more ports than those that depart from either the U.S. or Northern Europe. As a rule of thumb, the farther away you start the journey -- or the more countries your itinerary includes -- the fewer the ports you’ll be visiting in Iceland.

Of the country’s 18 ports, the following are the most popular:

Reykjavik : The capital of Iceland is the main port in the country and located on the southwestern coast. Reykjavik may not be a big city with its population of just about 120,000, but it does offer many attractions, including the iconic Hallgrimskirkja, the National and Saga Museums, the Perlan dome, the Harpa and the Laugavegur neighborhood.

Reykjavik is also an excellent starting point for many day trips, such as to the glaciers of the southern coast, the volcanoes on the Reykjanes peninsula and the Blue Lagoon.

Akureyri : This charming university town is known as the capital of the north. Akureyri 's many cafes, lively cultural life and Nordic architecture offer a taste of Icelandic city life. The Botanical Gardens and the Godafoss Waterfall are must-sees.

Husavik : This is the number one port for those looking to go on whale and dolphin watching tours. It also offers easy access to Mount Myvatn and the Vatnajokull National Park .

Isafjordur : Isafjordur is the largest harbor in the Westfjords and a great gateway to some stunning fjords. It's also home to a range of cultural attractions. Nearby ports in the region include Patreksfjordur or Djupavik.

Seydisfjordur : Seydisfjordur, a small Nordic village, serves as the primary port for cruise ships on the eastern coast and is known for its colorful wooden houses set against towering snow-capped mountains.

Grundarfjordur : Grundarfjordur is the gateway to Mount Kirkjufell and one of two main ports on the famous Snaefellsnes Peninsula (the other one is Stykkisholmur).

Packing for Iceland Cruises: What to Bring and What to Leave Behind

Blue Lagoon in Iceland (Photo: Chris Gray Faust)

Although there can be some variations between the early spring and the middle of the summer, it never really gets hot in Iceland. Daily average temperatures in July can reach 57 degrees F, but it's rarely warmer than 39 degrees F in April, so you’ll want to pack warm clothes and multiple layers even if you are traveling in the summer.

Hiking shoes/boots and comfortable outdoor clothes are a must regardless of the time of the year, as are windbreakers and waterproof layers. Although it may not rain during your cruise to Iceland, you will be likely visiting waterfalls, geysers and windy coastal areas, making these items mandatory if you want to stay dry and comfortable.

Don't forget that Iceland is also known for its stunning geothermal baths, for which swimwear is required. If you are visiting in the colder spring months, you may want to pack a bathrobe, although a T-shirt and flip flops may be fine in the summer. Leave sandals, sun dresses and beach shorts at home.
