cruise to guam from us

Geographically Pacific, legally American and culturally cosmopolitan, Guam is an island of international flavor. It’s the furthest west you’ll find any part of the United States, but long before there was the U.S. — we’re talking 1500 B.C. — Guam was Chamorro. Traditional Chamorro culture mostly faded out during Spanish rule, but remains today alive in the principles of chenchule' and inafa'maolek — basically, sharing and support for one another — and Chamorro and Inarajan villages are spots you can still visit to get a feel for the old way of life. Signs of the Spanish period also remain, including the plaza of the former Governor’s Palace and Fort Soledad, which offers amazing bay views. 20th Century history buffs won’t want to miss the War In The Pacific National Historic Park, which turns WWII battlefields, trenches and bunkers into an historical monument.

  • Discover a true island’s island — plus snorkeling, jet skiing and more — in Cocos Island, located just offshore of Guam.
  • Hear the inspiring legend of Two Lovers Point while taking in incredible views of Tumon Bay.
  • Have your coffee first and then come visit Latte Stone Park, named for stone pillar ruins that once lifted Chamorro houses off the ground.

A shot of a mountain at Port Guam in Guam

Guam (US Territory), Guam

On December 7, 1941, the Japanese military attacked the United States. While Pearl Harbor got all the press, that same day the Japanese bombed three other military bases. The idea was to remove any possibility that the United States could join the war in the Pacific. Bad idea. The target that got hit the worst was Guam: Not only was it bombed, it was invaded and occupied for nearly three years, which turned the island into a kind of slave camp for the indigenous Chamorro. Because of Guam's history—and because it's a U.S. territory, not some fascinating foreign country—a lot of people pass the island by, looking for something more exotic. Another possible reason for the tourism lag was that the island was actually sealed off from visitors for many years. Yet somehow modern Guam, the largest of the Mariana Islands (yep, the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the ocean, is right out there), has become a sampler plate of the Pacific. Fully a third of the island, including the best beaches, is off-limits to anyone but military personnel, and roads near the base will make you think you're driving through suburban Des Moines. Yet the southern part of the island is wild enough that a Japanese soldier continued to fight WWII here until the 1970s. In between these two extremes, you'll find a beautiful island with a unique mix of American, Pacific and Spanish cultures.

Learn more about cruises to Guam. Start now!

As you step onto the sun-kissed shores of Guam, it’s hard to imagine that this tropical paradise was once the target of a brutal Japanese invasion during World War II. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese military attacked the United States, and Guam was one of three military bases bombed that same day in an attempt to prevent American involvement in the war in the Pacific. Sadly, Guam suffered the most – the island was invaded and occupied for nearly three years, turning it into a slave camp for the indigenous Chamorro.

Despite its complicated past, modern-day Guam has emerged as a sampler plate of the Pacific, boasting a unique blend of American, Pacific, and Spanish cultures. The island’s history and status as a U.S. territory make it a fascinating destination for cruise lovers seeking something beyond the typical exotic getaway. And while fully a third of the island, including some of its best beaches, is off-limits to anyone but military personnel, the southern part of Guam is wild and untamed – so much so that a Japanese soldier continued to fight WWII here until the 1970s.

Guam Flag

From exploring the island’s historic World War II sites to immersing yourself in its vibrant Chamorro culture , there’s something for everyone on a Guam cruise. And with its stunning natural beauty, diverse cuisine, and warm hospitality, Guam will leave a lasting impression on any traveler. So come along as we explore this beautiful island and show you why cruises to Guam should be at the top of your travel list.

Cruises to Guam

Amid the pandemic-induced hiatus, the first cruise ship to dock in Guam sailed into Apra Harbor on February 24, 2023. The MS Amadea, carrying 523 passengers and 302 crew members, arrived from Pohnpei and will remain at the port until 9 p.m. when it is scheduled to depart. Tourists will spend the day exploring the island’s malls and restaurants.

With five cruise liners expected to arrive throughout the year, the Port Authority of Guam is excited to welcome luxury international cruise ships back to the island as the tourism industry recovers from the pandemic. Once Hotel Wharf rehabilitates, the facility will be expanded to accommodate more docked and cruise liners.

Cruises to Guam Ports

Cruise ships dock at the port in Apra Harbour, one of the most stunning natural harbors in the world, located just 2 miles west of the capital city of Hagatna. This bustling port welcomes visitors from around the globe, providing easy access to all Guam offers.

Guam’s port in Piti sees an average of five cruise ships annually, requiring the Port Authority of Guam to reconfigure its shipyard to accommodate the influx. With bigger plans in mind, a working group has been established to strategize a small cruise ship industry for the island.

Guam’s Port Authority is upgrading Hotel Wharf to accommodate small cruise ships, costing $24M. With the help of a Tiger grant, $10M has already been provided. The project will enhance the visitor experience and make Guam a top destination for cruise travelers with its stunning natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and numerous attractions.

Underwater World

Cocos Island : A small piece of land with lush tropical forests, daytime resorts, and watersports activities such as kayaking, parasailing, and snorkeling at the Merizo Barrier Reef, a protected marine ecosystem site.

The sunniest months are May and June, with average temperatures ranging from 32 degrees Celsius during the day to 25 degrees Celsius at night. This time of year provides visitors the best opportunity to enjoy the island’s pristine beaches, clear waters, and outdoor activities.

Currency : The official currency of Guam is the U.S. dollar, and most businesses accept major credit cards.

Here, the crystal-clear waters and white sandy beaches create a picture-postcard setting, ideal for relaxation and a break from it all. This little-known island, today under the administration of the United States, also offers you the opportunity to visit a number of historical sites, vestiges of Spanish colonisation, and to discover the culture of the Chamorros , the first inhabitants of the islands, talented craftspeople who have preserved their traditions.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:

TSA Reminds Travelers of REAL ID Identification Requirements

Release Date:  April 4, 2019

Enforcement begins in 18 months at all U.S. airport checkpoints

WASHINGTON – The Transportation Security Administration is reminding travelers that beginning October 1, 2020, every traveler must present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, or another acceptable form of identification, to fly within the United States. TSA has launched a public awareness campaign about the upcoming identification changes to ensure that every traveler is prepared for the airport security checkpoint process when the  REAL ID Act goes into full enforcement .

“TSA is doing everything we can to prepare our partners and the traveling public for the REAL ID deadline next year,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske. “The security requirements of the REAL ID Act will dramatically enhance and improve commercial aviation security.”

Travelers will begin seeing new signs at airports nationwide in the coming weeks to remind people that REAL ID-compliant licenses or other acceptable forms of ID, such as a valid passport, federal government PIV card or U.S. military ID, will be mandatory for air travel beginning on October 1, 2020. Critically important, on October 1, 2020, individuals who are unable to verify their identity will not be permitted to enter the TSA checkpoint and will not be allowed to fly.

REAL ID-compliant licenses are generally marked by a star on the top of the card. Travelers who are not sure if their ID is compliant should check with their state driver’s license agency.

Passed by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act complies with the 9/11 Commission's recommendation that the federal government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver's licenses.” The Act established minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards and prohibits federal agencies from accepting licenses and identification cards from states that do not meet these standards for official purposes, such as at airport security checkpoints. The regulations established the deadline of October 1, 2020, to ensure full enforcement of the REAL ID Act by that date. States have made considerable progress in meeting this key recommendation of the 9/11 Commission and every state has a more secure driver's license today than before the passage of the Act.

For more information about flying with a REAL ID and to download and print informational materials, visit  tsa.gov/real-id . https://www.dhs.gov/news/2019/ 04/04/tsa-reminds-travelers- real-id-identification- requirements

How to visit Australia without flying: Holland America launches new Grand Voyage

cruise to guam from us

The long-haul flight can be enough to keep some U.S. travelers from visiting Australia . But a new Holland America Line itinerary will offer an alternate route.

The cruise line’s Grand Australia and New Zealand voyage will sail round-trip from San Diego, California in 2026, taking guests down under and back over 93 days.

"Our Grand Voyages are renowned for connecting guests with the world's most fascinating places while sailing roundtrip from the United States," Beth Bodensteiner, the line’s chief commercial officer, said in a news release . "Our team crafted this itinerary to show guests the parts of Australia and New Zealand they expect to visit, but also included frequently asked for, but rarely visited, ports throughout Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands."

When is Holland America’s Grand Australia and New Zealand voyage?

The cruise will depart on Jan. 4, 2026 aboard the line’s 1,432-guest Zaandam ship.

Where will the cruise sail?

The ship will visit 44 ports in 10 countries. Passengers will make their way to Hawaii first before heading to the South Pacific. The ship will then visit Australia – almost circling the country – and New Zealand, followed by Tonga and French Polynesia on the way back to San Diego.

The itinerary features two days of scenic cruising at the Great Barrier Reef and four late-night departures in Adelaide, Australia and the French Polynesian islands of Moorea, Raiatea and Huahine. Guests will also stay overnight in six ports, including Honolulu, Sydney and Auckland, giving them ample time to explore.

Short vs. long cruises: Which one is right for you?

How much does the cruise cost?

The cruise currently starts at $17,699 per person based on double occupancy, according to Holland America’s website . Travelers who book by June 16, 2025 can get perks like a Surf Wi-Fi package, airport transfers in San Diego, a 3% pay-in-full discount and more thrown in (though they vary by stateroom category).
