Hop on Hop Off Bus Messina Italy

Messina was one of the Ports of Call on our Cruise. . As soon as we left the ship, we were surrounded by a large group of girls selling tickets for the Hop on Hop off Bus. We thought that this would be a good way to see the sights of Messina so we purchased the 2 line tickets at 11.35 hrs. Line 1 would take us (45 mins) and line 2 (70 mins) we were advised that we could hop on and off the bus at the stops and that the bused ran every 10 mins. We got off at a stop on line 1, went to a few shops then returned to get the bus to take us back to the square to pick up line 2 bus. We waited for approx 90 mins and a bus didn't appear, we couldnt get a taxi and didn't know which way to walk back to the Cruise Port. A gentleman from a neartby shop came over to us and told us that the buses didn't run after lunchtine on a Sunday. It cost us 40 Euro for 2 people. Beware of this company.

My friend and I were also scammed by the Hop on Hop off tour bus company. We bought a ticket that covered the blue line (45mins) and the red line (70mins) at a cost of 40 euro for 2 at 11.35 and were advised the bus was every 10 mins and we could get on and off all day as the ticket was valid for 24hrs. We travelled on the blue line first and got off at stop no4 for a look at the few shops that were opened. We returned to the bus stop at 13.40 to continue our tour of the blue line then change to the red line only to find out after 90mins that the buses stop at lunchtime. We did not know how to get back to the port and there was no taxis. Eventually a shopkeeper came out and told us the buses do not run on a Sunday after lunchtime and pointed us in the right direction back to the cruise ship. Never again will I use a Hop on Hop off bus in Italy. Hope this helps other tourist to be wary.

our cruise ship docked in Messina and we thought the best way to see it would be by the Hop Off Hop On Bus. It is not a very long tour because basically there is very little to see in Messina - it is a dirty and scruffy town. At €15 the cost is extortionate for what you get - basically a tour of back streets with the odd church thrown in as a point of (alleged) interest. Whenever the bus was travelling slowly we witnessed Beggars coming up to us and holding up their hands for money. At traffic lights on red the beggars descended on the cars, knocking on windows and asking for cash ! The only real point of interest on this tour is the Clock Tower in Cathedral Square which gives a show when it strikes noon - something you could have watched for free anyway. If we were ever unlucky enough to dock in Messina again then we would not get off the ship, or if we did, we would definitely not go on the Hop On Hop Off Bus !

My mother and I bought tickets for this, hoping to get a quick tour without having to hike up the hills on foot, owing to the heat. The buses are supposed to run every 20 min., but we waited for 35-40 while the driver insisted on filling every seat instead of leaving at the posted time. There were numerous delays along the route, including police blockades, ambulances passing, and tree cutters blocking traffic in both directions in the middle of the day. I am writing this review from the bus, and although the route is supposed to take only 45 minutes in total, we've been in our seats for about 90 min. and have just made it past the first of six stops. The only upside is that he commentary is decent and so are the views. Granted, much of the delay is not the bus company's fault, but I would not recommend this to my worst enemy. I wish I'd read the reviews before signing up for this because I've wasted a morning that could have been better spent doing virtually anything else.

I can't find anything nice to say about this tour. First of all, as soon as you leave the cruise terminal you are accosted by people trying to sell you tickets for the hop on hop off tours.It is sort of confusing as well as overwhelming. There are about ten people from each company and all of them are offering different "specials." It turns out that the company sells individuals the tickets and then they turn around and sell them to the tourists. This is true in all of Italy. It is some kind of scam the Italians are running with the company. We bought the tickets with the promise that the bus leaves every 15 minutes from each stop. We decided to stop off at a particular stop with a nice view and have an ice cream. We finished our treats, took some pictures and never wandered more than 15 feet from the bus stop. We waited an hour and fifteen minutes for the next bus to come! At this point we were to afraid to get off the bus because we didn't want to be abandoned for an hour again. When we got back to the cruise terminal I was livid and went to the person who was organizing the loading of the bus to complain. All my complaints fell on deaf ears because I could not find the person who sold us the tickets. If you want a quick tour of the city of Messina, and there isn't that much to see, I would recommend using the little tourist train. I think about five of those passed us by when we were waiting for the bus, They don't allow you get on and off but you can see the city in less than an hour, If you are with a cruise I would seriously look into booking a Sicily tour before you leave for your cruise, Take a tour to Mt, Etna or some where else outside of Messina. There are quite a few private companies that book cruise tours if you don't want to pay for the shore excursion from the cruise line. I really regret not doing this. There really isn't much to see in Messina itself and we wasted a port day doing basically nothing.

We took the bus sight seeing tour it lasts a bout 45 mins enjoyable but the port shopping area a lot of the shops take siestas between 14/16 hrs so not much to do or add

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
