Travel in style along the Sumida River in Tokyo

While it won’t get you from Point A to Point B quite as quickly as the train, the Tokyo Cruise Ship service (also called the Suijou Bus, or Water Bus ) is the way to travel in style along the Sumida River from Asakusa . With their fleet of 11 ships on 7 routes, you can travel between 12 locations in the Tokyo Bay area, including Asakusa, Hinode Pier in Shinagawa, Hamarikyu Pier in Hamarikyu Garden , Odaiba Seaside Park , Tokyo Big Sight or Palette Town in Odaiba , and Kasai Rinkai Park .

The futuristic cruise ship Himiko is the face of the fleet, running on the Asakusa-Odaiba Direct Line. Designed by Matsumoto Leiji, the famous artist behind the manga Galaxy Express 999, characters from the series stand on Himiko’s inner deck. Other ships, such as the sophisticated Jubilee and the new samurai ship Atakemaru are also popular.

Fares are based on distance and range from 200 yen for a 5-minute trip (for example, from Hinode to Harumi Piers) to 2,000 yen (for the 70-minute ride from Asakusa to Toyosu). Atakemaru , the newest route and ship, features an “ordinary” rate of 1,000 yen for adults (1,500 for a round-trip) on its route from Hinode to Odaiba, but also has a “special room” rate of 1,500 yen (2,000 round trip) that allow you to enjoy a more comfortable ride for the 40-minute trip. Bento boxes may be reserved in advance for groups of 20 or more.

One thing to watch out for is that the water bus services end relatively early in the evening, and if you are looking to spend time at your destination, you may wish to take the train back to your lodgings. However, there’s nothing quite like a summer day on the river, passing under the Sumida Bridges. Refreshments, even alcohol, are available on the water buses and a guide will provide information about the area as you cruise. It’s a relaxing and enjoyable way to travel, and will give you a view of Tokyo that you simply can’t find anywhere else!

The hosts would spend a fortune to hold a yakatabune party that would be the talk of the town.

Yakatabune culture survives today in many of Japan's river cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Fukuoka or Hita , to name just a few. Courses that include dances and songs performed by geisha are quite expensive, though they allow the full cultural experience.

In this article, we introduce an affordable yakatabune dinner cruise that can be enjoyed in Tokyo . The cruise includes a dinner course of refined traditional Japanese cuisine , a ride along the Sumida River with fabulous views of Tokyo at night, and other elements that allow participants a taste of traditional yakatabune culture.

Content and Highlights of the Yakatabune Dinner Cruise

The Yakatabune Cruise departs from Tennozu Isle Platform 3 at 18:00. Participants should arrive at around 17:30 to the boat and do the chek-in procedures.

The boat heads first to the Odaiba area. There will be two stops on the way: one at Odaiba , offering a great view of Rainbow Bridge and the Fuji TV Building , which are both illuminated at night; the second stop is near the Eitai Bridge on the Sumida River, allowing a great view of TOKYO SKYTREE .

The best time to take photos of the beautiful views of Tokyo at night is during these stops.

A professional photographer is stationed on the yakatabune. He'll take photos of the participants making sure that both their faces and the nightscape show up clearly in the photos. The pictures are included in the participation fee and you'll be able to download them at the end of the cruise.

After a brief introduction by the organizers and the traditional opening of the sake barrel , which marks the beginning of the party in Japanese culture, the food course is served.

The course includes several Japanese dishes that are as tasty as they are gorgeous. The highlight of the menu is tempura . During yakatabune cruises in the past, they would throw a fishing net into the river. The fish caught on the day would be cooked into tempura on the spot and offered fresh to the guests.

The all-you-can-drink beverage menu includes several types of Japanese alcohol, from sake and shochu to whiskey and wine, as well as soft drinks.

The refined cuisine, the wonderful views of Tokyo at night, and socializing with other participants - all these are important elements of the yakatabune dinner cruise so take the time to enjoy everything at leisure. The cruise ends after about two hours, with the boat returning to Tennozu Isle at 20:30.

We Tried It Ourselves! Thoughts on the Yakatabune Dinner Cruise

In order to introduce the Yakatabune Dinner Cruise to our readers, we actually took part in it in December 2019.

The yakatabune boat was waiting for us at the Tennozu Isle Pier. It was decorated with beautiful traditional lanterns, gathering everyone's attention.

The cruise started with the traditional opening of the sake barrel using wooden mallets. Two volunteers were recruited from among the participants. It seemed like a lot of fun to break the sake barrel with everyone cheering around!

By this time, the boat had reached Odaiba. We went out on the deck for a few minutes to take a look at Rainbow Bridge, which looked dazzling!

The food course was brought to the tables one dish at a time. After an appetizer and sashimi artistically arranged on a boat-shaped plate, the tempura was brought it in.

Good quality tempura is soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. For this very important feature to be kept, the pieces of tempura were brought one by one. The various types of vegetable and seafood tempura were light and very flavorful. We loved it!

The course culminates with a hot pot dish and rice. A delicious dessert is brought in at the end of the meal.

After experiencing such a meal, you'll be able to understand why Edo-period people saw the food as the highlight of a yakatabune cruise. The Japanese cuisine served during such a cruise is delicious and made with so much dedication to detail.

It's around this time that the boat reaches Eitai Bridge. TOKYO SKYTREE was shining bright in the distance and both sides of the river were lined by skyscrapers full of lights.

The boat will gradually head back to Tennozu Isle along Sumida River. We passed under several bridges, and the cityscape along the river was simply breathtaking! We even spotted Tokyo Tower on the right, standing out among the bright skyscrapers - a gorgeous sight!

Remember that you can go back to your table inside the yakatabune at any time to enjoy drinks. The leisurely moments on the boat allow you to think about the Edo-period people who invented yakatabune cruises to appreciate excellent food and quality entertainment.

We felt that the Yakatabune Dinner Cruise is so much more than a night cruise in Tokyo. It is a fun and educational evening that offers an in-depth experience of this special part of Japanese culture.

Sumida River Walk is a new pedestrian bridge established in 2020, which connects Asakusa and Tokyo Skytree in the shortest distance. The bridge is 160 meters (524 feet) long and 2.5 meters (8 feet) wide, and opens from 7:00 to 22:00. Standing on the bridge enables you to enjoy the view of the Sumida River and its banks from a different angle.

I Sailed on the Longest Luxury River Cruise in the World — Here's What It Was Like

A cultural ritual in Varanasi, 15 days in Bangladesh, and incredible wildlife spotting opportunities were among the trip's highlights.

The Ganges is to India what the Nile is to Egypt and what the Euphrates is to Mesopotamia: It's the beating heart of the destination's cultural and economic life. Flowing more than 1,500 miles from the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal, the Ganges nurtured the Hindu holy city of Varanasi for thousands of years. It was on these banks that the Buddha preached his first sermon in 528 BCE, and it was along these waters that the British built the first capital of the British Raj, Kolkata.

Where the river flows through land, it shelters some of the most endangered aquatic fauna in the world, and where it meets the sea, it spawns one of the largest mangrove forests on Earth. And yet, never has a luxury river cruise sailed the Ganges — at least not one that compared to world-class river itineraries in other parts of the world.

This changed last year, when India's Antara Luxury River Cruises launched an epic itinerary down the Ganges and its sister river, the Brahmaputra. Covering nearly 2,000 miles in 51 days, it is the longest river cruise in the world.

Here's what it's like.

Kolkata-based Antara Luxury River Cruises operates the tour, a subsidiary of the Exotic Heritage Group , which has been involved in luxury travel in India for the last 30 years.

Raj Singh, an Indian wildlife expert and luxury travel pioneer, is among the trip promoters of this journey, as is Andrea Massari , a Singapore-based cruise expert who has previously managed luxury river cruises on the Irrawaddy River in Myanmar with Ayravata Cruises and the Mekong River in Vietnam with Pandaw Cruises. An architect by training, Massari oversees the technology of the cruise ships. A third director is Annapurna Garimella , an art historian, designer, author, and doctor of philosophy from Columbia University, who oversees the design elements of the cruise.

The group owns four luxury cruise vessels deployed on shorter luxury cruises until now.

The cruise begins at the holy city of Varanasi in central India. While here, guests witness Ganga Aarti, an awe-inspiring ritual performed at sundown each day on the banks of the Ganges. In this tradition, a cohort of priests offer ritual prayers in honor of the river, which is worshiped as a goddess in Hinduism. 

With flickering flames of multi-tiered brass lamps dancing against the night sky, the deep, harmonic thrum of conch shells piercing the air, and the chant of soul-stirring mantras floating over the water, the Ganga Aarti is a spellbinding performance of a living tradition that has continued unbroken for thousands of years. Once departed from Varanasi, the cruise journeys downstream and to more than 50 remarkable destinations, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites, natural parks, and historical metropolises. Kaziranga National Park is among these special places, home to more than two-thirds of the surviving population of the endangered one-horned rhino, as well as Majuli — the largest river island in the world.

Other major stops along the route include Bodh Gaya, where Buddha attained enlightenment and one of the most important pilgrimage centers for Buddhists all over the world; Kolkata, also known as the City of Joy, once the capital of the British Raj in India and home of Nobel laureates Mother Teresa and Rabindranath Tagore. Kolkata is also the epicenter of the global jute industry, accounting for the bulk of its production and export.

Murshidabad and Sualkuchi — two cities famous worldwide for their mulberry silk textiles — are also significant itinerary stops. Guests get to see the art of sericulture (silk production) up close and the craft of weaving some of the finest silk textiles on earth.

Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is a bustling city of crafts, culture, and beautiful Islamic architecture. The cruise spends 15 days in Bangladesh before reentering India.

In the Sundarbans — the largest mangrove forests on earth and home of the endangered Bengal tiger — guests are privy to yet another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mangroves, comprised of trees that grow in saline water, typically where rivers meet the sea, are biodiversity hotspots and act as huge carbon sinks, helping combat climate change. It is an ecological wonder to behold firsthand.

The cruise ends at Dibrugarh, a city in the northeastern Assam region of India known for its eponymous Assam tea. Famous for its sprawling tea estates, Dibrugarh produces so much high-quality tea that it is known as the Tea City of India.

All this is in addition to the remarkable views guests can expect while onboard the boat, with the geography and the landscape changing as you sail. Animal spotting is undoubtedly likely, as the Ganges is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including the endangered Gangetic dolphin, otters, at least 15 species of freshwater turtles, and three varieties of crocodile, including the critically endangered gharial , found only in the Ganges.

The MS Ganga Vilas is a luxury vessel done in Art Deco style. At more than 200 feet long and nearly 40 feet wide, it is a vessel made for small, intimate journeys rather than big, boisterous tours.

There are 18 luxury suites here, and they spread across three decks with a capacity to host 36 guests in total. Each suite has floor-to-ceiling French windows for optimal views. For an even more expansive perspective, guests can head to the sundeck to sunbathe, participate in a yoga session, or just relax.  You might spot river dolphins leaping out of the water if you're lucky. 

The restaurant onboard seats up to 40 guests and serves Indian and Continental fare. There’s also a spa and a gym available. The vessel is also home to a reverse-osmosis water plant, which provides fresh and safe drinking water. Its hospital-grade silencers ensure a noise-free cruise experience for guests and the river’s fragile fauna. 

To further ensure that the vessel causes the least stress on the river’s ecosystem, the operator uses sea vessel-grade oil-water separators to ensure that the oil is separated from the water in the vessel’s discharge. Premium sewage treatment plants ensure that no contamination of the river water occurs from the waste generated on the ship. No plastic is used on board; water is served in aluminum water bottles, which guests can take as souvenirs.
