Let's go touring…

The cotswolds guided motorcycle holiday.

The Cotswolds guided motorcycle tour - Ride along the ancient highways and byways.

Our Cotswolds Weekend guided motorcycle tour is designed to be whatever you wish it to be. It could be your season opener, or it could also be your last trip of the year. You may want to meet some familiar faces from the previous tours again. Or you might just fancy a few days away, closer to home. If you are coming from overseas, this guided motorcycle tour is a perfect way to extend your European holiday and explore England too.

This corner of England possesses a deeply rural charm. It might only be a little more than fifty miles, as the crow flies, from central London. But arriving in the Cotswolds feels like stepping back in time.

We could comfortably ride this guided motorcycle tour in a day. But we’ll enjoy it more if we stretch it into two days having plenty of stop-offs along the way.

We’ll spend this enjoyable weekend winding through the scenic landscapes visiting small country towns and pretty chocolate box villages. Our route on this guided motorcycle tour covers the counties of Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, as well as Warwickshire and Worcestershire. Will ride along the scenic highways and byways, meandering through rolling hills dotted with historical monuments and stately homes.

This breathtaking region gives a great choice of stunning biking routes with ever-changing views.

From the ancient straight-as-an-arrow Roman roads to the narrow and twisty country lanes – all set amongst the beautiful Cotswold countryside.

Furthermore, this guided motorcycle holiday also includes visits to some of England’s most beautiful villages and towns. The picturesque village of Bibury, the market town of Burford and the model village of Bourton-on-the-Water , as well as the charming town of Broadway is just to name a few. These glorious places look as if they have strayed into the 21st century from another era giving this tour a sentiment of charm and nostalgia.

After working up our appetites with great rides each day, we’ll return to our hotel to reflect on daily events over a delicious evening meal.

A well known 20th-century writer, JB Priestly, once wrote: “The Cotswolds is the most English of all English countryside”. And fortunately, that statement is still as relevant now as it was then. The beauty of Cotswolds becomes more evident with each twist of the throttle and each passing mile.

Cotswolds Weekend motorbike trip - UK

Today, our Cotswolds Weekend guided motorcycle tour begins. So, make sure you get up nice and early, do your morning exercises, feed the cat, walk the dog, have breakfast, read the paper, check your emails, make yourself pretty, load the bike and depart to meet the rest of the group.

We shall meet at our comfortable hotel situated in the heart of the Cotswolds about a mid-late afternoon. If you prefer to arrive at the hotel earlier to settle in, the check-in usually starts at 14.00ish.

We’ll meet for a pre-dinner drink at about 18.00. This will give us enough time before the evening meal to meet some old faces, make new acquaintances, exchange the necessary pleasantries, set the world to rights and of course, analyze the c..p out of the next day’s riding itinerary.

The rest of the evening of the Cotswolds guided motorcycle holiday is your free time to use whichever way it pleases you.

Cotswolds Weekend guided motorcycle tour - UK

Today, after all-night fasting, we’ll replenish our energy stores with a hearty, highly calorific full English breakfast. Our circular ride will take us around some of the most beautiful parts of the Cotswolds. We’ll meander along some great biking roads surrounded by rolling green hills dotted with sheep towards our scheduled destinations. Please note – parking availability might affect where we stop for breaks, refreshments and lunch.

Our first stop will be-should be-could be-maybe is Moreton-in-Marsh. It is one of many beautiful market towns in the Cotswolds and one of the most popular biking destinations. The high street is lined with many elegant eighteenth-century inns and houses, including the famous Redesdale Market Hall.

From Moreton-in-Marsh, we’ll ride a section of the straight-as-an-arrow Roman road – Fosse Way, and also some not so straight-as-an-arrow, perhaps Anglo-Saxon highways and byways towards our next port of call. Stratford-upon-Avon is a market town with more than 800 years of history, dating back to the times of Mercia, Viking invasions, Tudors and of course the man himself, Shakespeare – the Renaissance Man, the Comedy Man, the Tragedy Man, the … Ice Cream Man.

As we start looping it around, our route will take us to the heart of the Cotswolds. In this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty peacefully lies the idyllic historic village of Broadway. The village is a stunning collage of centuries-old honey-coloured cottages, limestone period buildings, and chestnut trees lining the high street’s grass-fringed verges. Here we should be able to park our bikes without much hassle and have lunch in one of many traditional eateries.

Continuing our guided motorcycle tour, we’ll arrive at Burford. It is often referred to as the ‘Gateway to the Cotswolds’ and yet another Cotswolds town justifiably called one of the most picturesque towns in England. With its medieval bridge, old stone houses and attractive Tudor and Georgian frontages, it is a great place to stroll along the high street and take some great photos. As beautiful as it might be, parking in Burford is often quite challenging. So we’ll play it by air and see how we get on.

The last destination before returning to our hotel is the much-photographed village of Shilton. With the tempting-but-no-to-be-attempted-on-motorcycle ford across ‘The Shill’ brook, the open village green and pretty stone cottages, Shilton offers a truly Cotswold-ish experience. Afternoon tea and scones at the Rosse & Crown will provide a beautiful setting and a beautiful finale to the beautiful ride. From here, you’ll return to the hotel. We’ll pop quickly home to feed the cat, meet you back at the hotel, and join you for an evening meal.

Group evening meal will be served at 19.30… sharp…ish!

Cotswolds Weekend motorbike holiday - UK

After breakfast, we’ll check out from our hotel and take a relaxing ride towards Wiltshire and the southern entrance to the Cotswolds. Here, on top of the hill encircled by the River Avon, proudly sits the “Queen of Hilltop Towns” – Malmesbury. It is said that Malmesbury is the oldest continually inhabited town in England, dating back in history over 1000 years. Amongst many other historic buildings, Malmesbury is also home to Old Bell – England’s oldest hotel. According to the shires’ history parchments, the hotel has been offering bed and board to pilgrims and travellers since 1220. The town is a pleasant place to stroll around, take some photos and have a coffee before continuing with our journey.

Next, our ride will take us to the historic, charming and typically Cotswolds-ish village of Bibury. The pretty High Street and the river banks are lined with horse chestnut trees and include a mixture of period houses and picturesque honey-coloured Cotswold stone cottages. The cottages of Arlington Row are often referred to as the most photographed and beautiful cottages in England. Even more so when they are “photobombed” by a bunch of bikers with big bikes and even bigger appetites. If we are still feeling a bit peckish and we are not too early, the Swan Hotel has a lovely garden and serves a great range of mid-morning cakes and teas.

Our next and the last destination on this tour is Bourton-on-the-Water. The town is regularly voted one of the prettiest in England, often referred to as the Venice of the Cotswolds. Here we can visit the Cotswold Motoring Museum and take a fascinating journey through the time and history of 20th-century motoring. The collection of rare vehicles and classic memorabilia will give us a nostalgic glimpse into life on the road the way it used to be.

After this, we’ll have one last drink in a café by the river, say our farewells and depart home. We hope that you enjoy this fantastic mini-tour as much as us organising and guiding it.

Thank you for RidingWithUs, and we hope to hear from you soon again.

Bath Sightseeing

This being the day of arrival guests will come at different times so those arriving early can sightsee around Bath. Our hotel is centrally located making touring the city convenient.

The Cotswolds ~ 4 hours riding ~ 120 miles

There are so many pretty villages in the Cotswolds that it is challenging to pick a few that will offer a flavour of what the area has to offer. Castle Combe is a quintessentially English and many say it is "the prettiest village in England" a claim also made by many other villages but it is nice. Cirencester also makes an interesting stop, especially on Mondays when the market is on. They have a huge hedge that is one of the towns claim to fame.

Next stop will be the village of Bibury that nestles in a valley along the banks of the River Coln. In 1726 Alexander Pope wrote about Bibury's pleasing prospect and little over a century later William Morris said the village was surely the most beautiful in England. We stop here for lunch at the Swan Hotel.

Continuing our journey we reach Bourton-on-the-Water the premier tourist hot spot in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds. You will no doubt have seen pictures or paintings of this village before because it is popular with artists and well photographed. A notable feature are the low bridges across the River Windrush that passes through the village.

Lower and Upper Slaugher are the next villages we pass through on our way to Broadway which has been referred to as the "Jewel in the Cotswolds". All three are charming villages with notable manor houses and churches and the tower at Broadway is another that you will undoubtedly recognise as it too is well pictured. Broadway has a collection of shops making it the best of the three for an afternoon tea break.

We then leave the Cotswolds to head west making our way through the Malvern Hills and into the Wye Valley area of Outstanding Natural Beauty stopping for the night at Ross-on-Wye.

Bercon Beacons ~ 5 hours riding ~ 170 miles

There and many nice spots along the Wye Valley but these are more for walking, so, we shall plot a route that caprures some of the more scenic spots then head into the Brecon Beacons.

We head south to Monnow Bridge a 700 year old river crossing that is the only fortified bridge in the UK. We then continue to the ruins of Tintern Abbey that sits on border between Monmouthshire in Wales and Gloucestershire in England. From there we follow the Wye as it flows south and pass scenic spots including the Devils Pulpit and the Eagles Nest. At St Arvans we alter course to head north westerly stopping at Usk to see the Castle and visit the Rural Life Museum.

Now  we head north to Abergavenny and onwards through the Brecon Beacons National Park to Hay-on-Wye where we stop for lunch.

Departing Hay-on-Wye we head westerly to Builth Wells and onwards to Garth where we change direction to the south to Brecon and back into the National Park then cross the park to the Brecon Mountain Railway, a narrow gauge steam train. The 10 mile return trip passes a reservoir and takes you into the centre of the park. This makes a nice break from riding.

The final leg will head south towards Cardiff to reach Miskin Manor where we dine at 18:30.

Cardiff to Aberystwyth ~ 4 hours riding ~ 150 miles

We head west to Swansea passing the ruins of the castle and the Tudor style buildings nearby and onwards around Swansea Bay to Mumbles where the Victorian Pier has amusements and dining facilities. We shall stop here for morning coffee.

Our route continues west towards the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park where we find the Dylan Thomas association in and around Laugharne where there is another ruined castle.

Departing Laugharne  we begin our route north to Cardigan and from there follow the coast road to Aberystwyth. This is a coastal road but note that if you want to see the sea please note that this coast road largely runs along a hilly area with farmland between the road and the sea so, the sea is not always visible. It makes a great ride though.

When we arrivre in Aberystwyth  you might want to take the Cliff Railway up to a great viewpoint with views over the town and out to sea.Our hotel is located on the sea front though we shall dine in town.

Aberystwyth to Portmeirion ~ 3 hours riding ~ 112 miles

The journey continues north to the Museum of Modern Art at Machynlleth then we cross the Dyfi bridge to enter the Eryr National Park (Snowdonia) the location of the highest mountain in Wales. There are only 15 mountains in Wales that are over 3000 ft high and they are all located within this national park.

We take the Pen Y Pass and onwards to two lakes; Llyn Padarm and Llyn Peris where there are a choice of attractions. Dolbadarn another ruined castle, The National Slate Museum, the Ceunant Mawr Waterfall to name a few then we continue to Caernarfon Castle constructed by Edward I in 1283 to control the newly conquered welsh population. It is now a UNESCO Wordl Heritage Site.

We now turn south where the Indigo Jones Slate Works another attraction we could stop at before continuing to Portmeirion which was designed by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis in an Italian style.

We deliberately made the travelling today shorter to allow ample time to explore Portmeirion where we will be staying overnight.

Portmeirion to Crew ~ 3 hours ~ 125 miles

We shall depart Portmeirion heading north easterly across Snowdonia to Conwy and along the north Welsh coast to cross the border back into England.

Some might want to join the motorway and begin their route home but we suggest two places worthy of a visit; Port Sunlight, a model village created for soap factory workers and Chester, an ancient Cathedral city.

We end the trip at crew where some will catch a train then others get back on the road to the home or orward travels.

Route Variation

Please note that maps are indicative because it is not always possible to enter all the waypoints and on the day of departure as we need to review our routes based upon the latest traffic and weather information available making changes as and when necessary.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

cotswold motorcycle tours

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

cotswold motorcycle tours

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
