13 Cool Things to Do in the Texas Panhandle

Small roads, big skies, and wide-open spaces as far as the eye can see: these are just a few of the cool things to see in the Texas Panhandle Plains!

Located in northwest Texas, this often-overlooked region of the Lone Star State is quintessentially Texas, featuring the seemingly never-ending plains that many non-Texans associate with our state.

If you’re passing through, though, it’s worth stopping to appreciate some of the Texas Panhandle attractions that make this corner of Texas well worth a look.

Here are a few of the best things to do in the TX Panhandle!

Fun Things to Do in the Texas Panhandle

Drive route 66..

Texas’ portion of Route 66 may only stretch for 179 miles, but it packs quite the punch!

Featuring cool ghost towns, quirky roadside attractions, and even the Midpoint of the full Route 66 drive (it’s in Adrian, Texas), driving Route 66 is one of the absolute best Texas Panhandle attractions.

While you can easily drive the route in a single day, it’s much more fun to make a weekend of it and spend the night in Amarillo along the way.

Go for a hike in Palo Duro Canyon State Park.

Nicknamed the “Grand Canyon on Texas”, Palo Duro Canyon is the second-largest canyon in the USA and one of the best places to visit in the Panhandle!

While there are plenty of hikes and viewpoints to choose from, be sure not to miss the hike to the famous (and gorgeous) lighthouse formation while you’re there.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park is located just off of Route 66 and right next door to Amarillo, making it an easy addition to most trips to the Panhandle.

Visit the International Waterlily Collection in San Angelo.

Did you know that one of the world’s most impressive waterlily collections is located in the Texas Panhandle Plains?

Located right along the Concho River, this peaceful park is a hidden gem in the often dusty plains, and definitely worth a visit!

Snap photos at Cadillac Ranch.

Texas’ portion of Route 66 is home to many quirky roadside attractions, but none is as iconic as Cadillac Ranch !

Featuring 10 Cadillacs lined up in the desert with their front ends buried in the sand and thousands of layers of spray paint coating every inch of them, there’s no doubt that Cadillac Ranch it’s one of those sights that you simply have to see to believe!

If you’re so inclined, you can buy a can of spray paint to add your own touch to the art as well–but be sure to photograph your work, because it will almost certainly be painted over again within a day or two.

Hike the famous Tunnel Trail.

Have you ever wanted to explore an abandoned railroad tunnel?

Add the popular Tunnel Trail to your list of what to do in the Texas Panhandle, and you can!

In addition to the history and views, the tunnel is also home to around 500,000 Mexican free-tailed bats from April to October each year.

If there’s one manmade structure that you associate with visiting the Panhandle… there’s a good chance that it is windmills.

This quirky museum in Lubbock features more than 160 windmills, and the collection is quite a memorable sight!

Check out the Wichita Falls Waterfall.

When you think of visiting the Panhandle Plains, waterfalls probably aren’t the first thing that comes to mind–but one of the most memorable waterfalls in Texas is located in Wichita Falls!

At 54-feet tall, the multi-level waterfall is well worth a visit when in the area.

Is it natural?

Kind of… but no.

The original Wichita Falls that the city was named for were natural, but they washed away in a flood back in the 19th century.

Today’s artificial waterfall is a homage to them, and a fun road trip stop as well!

Pay a visit to the Buddy Holly Center.

Stretching across 6,440 acres of grassland prairie, Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge is the oldest wildlife refuge in Texas, and a fun place to visit in the Panhandle!

It’s a wonderful place to spot wildlife, especially migratory birds (it is particularly known for its population of lesser sandhill cranes when they pass through during migration).

There are two very short trails in the park, but it is mostly known for its wildlife, not hiking.

The refuge is open 24/7 and is free to visit.

Try your hand at a steak-eating contest.

Think you have a big appetite?

If so, consider hitting up the Big Texan Steak Ranch for their 72 oz. steak challenge , one of the most infamous things to do in the Texas Panhandle!

If you take the challenge, you’ll need to sit on a small stage-like table at the front of the restaurant as you (try to) eat a 72 oz. steak, plus fixings, in less than an hour.

If you succeed, the meal is free.

If not, prepare to cough up $72.

Even if food challenges aren’t your thing, though, this utterly unmistakable and over-the-top restaurant/roadside attraction combination is well worth a stop while in the area.

Sure, everyone knows that the Texas Panhandle is located in the upper-left corner of the state–but the region technically stretches beyond the “square” at the top of Texas!

The Texas Panhandle Plains region reaches further south than Abilene and as far east as Wichita Falls, taking up a solid portion of northwest Texas.

Lubbock, Abilene, San Angelo, and Amarillo all fall solidly within the Panhandle Plains region.

If you’re looking for the best things to do in the Texas Panhandle Plains, any of those cities are an excellent place to start.

Kate are you related to the Storms that founded Stormville Tx. ? I am.

I don’t think so! My husband was born in Texas but his family originally comes from the Midwest. 🙂 That’s a cool connection, though!

coastal plains texas places to visit

From frontier forts to historic missions, the Lone Star State is full of fascinating sites that keep the past alive. The Texas Gulf Coast is no exception. After all, it’s here that an entirely different chapter of Texas history took place. Explore beautifully preserved homes, Antebellum-era plantations, and a Civil War battlefield as you get to know the people, places, and events that shaped the state as we know it today. Start your own journey of discovery at any of the following historic sites operated by the Texas Historical Commission .

Fulton Mansion State Historic Site

Settled among stately oaks just a stone’s throw away from the gentle tides of Aransas Bay, Fulton Mansion is a historic treasure. Built in 1877, the home’s mansard roof and balustrades make it a picturesque example of the Second Empire style of architecture popularized in 19th-century France. Yet that’s not all that sets this Victorian-era mansion apart—it was one of the first homes in the region with interior gas lighting, central heating, and indoor plumbing.

Feel like you’ve taken a step into the past as you enter the beautifully restored home. Each room is furnished as it would have looked near the end of the 19th century, offering the chance to experience the day-to-day lives of the mansion’s affluent occupants. Take a step further as you admire historical objects and exhibits that outline the history of the Fulton family and their history in the cattle industry. Learn about life in the area at the Education and History Center.

Visit the Fulton Mansion State Historic Site and you’ll get the chance to see an architectural marvel, experience life in a different era, and discover an important chapter of Texas history along the way.

Previously closed for renovations after Hurricane Harvey, Fulton Mansion is now open for visitors.

Port Isabel Lighthouse State Historic Site

Towering 72 feet over the quaint gulf-side town of Port Isabel, the historic Port Isabel Lighthouse is a living piece of Texas history that offers one of the best views you’ll find anywhere on the Gulf Coast. Constructed in 1852, the lighthouse helped ensure safety on South Texas’ coastal waterways for more than 50 years, and it was even occupied by soldiers for the Confederacy and Union during the Civil War.

Climb the 75 stairs for a panoramic vista of the aquamarine waters of the Gulf of Mexico and South Padre Island in the distance. Stop by the museum in the reconstructed keeper’s cottage to see the lighthouse’s history, then take time to browse the one-of-a-kind shops nearby. It’s not every day you can visit an authentic lighthouse, which is why the Port Isabel Lighthouse is an essential part of any visit to South Padre Island.

Levi Jordan Plantation State Historic Site

At its peak in the 1850s, the Levi Jordan Plantation was a prolific producer of sugar and cotton that largely relied on the forced labor of more than 130 slaves. The central point of the property was the plantation house, a two-story Greek-Revival structure constructed with pine lumber from Florida in 1854. The plantation is notable as the backdrop for The Uncompromising Diary of Sallie McNeill , a series of diary entries written by the granddaughter of Levi Jordan from 1858 to 1867. Available at local booksellers and directly from the Texas A&M University press, the book offers a personal perspective of life on the plantation during the Civil War and Reconstruction.

The Levi Jordan Plantation State Historic Site is currently under development and is not expected to open until Fall 2021. Please check the historic site’s website for more information.

Sabine Pass Battleground State Historic Site

On the afternoon of September 8, 1863, a contingent of Union gunboats launched an attack on Fort Griffin on the bank of the Sabine River to prevent the Confederacy from opening a trade route with France. What followed was one of the most one-sided battles in the Civil War, a complete Confederate victory that resulted in the capture of 350 prisoners.

Find yourself at the site of one of the few Texas battles of the era at Sabine Pass Battleground State Historic Site in Port Arthur. Embark on a self-guided tour and you’ll see memorials dedicated to Confederate commander Richard W. Dowling, as well as the Union soldiers who fell on that day. See how the battle played out on the pavilion with interpretive displays and check out the scale model of Fort Griffin. Take your time and you’ll uncover the many stories of a little-known chapter of American history.

Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site

Built on one of the original parcels of land administered by Stephen F. Austin in the early 19th century, the Varner-Hogg Plantation was a large sugar plantation in the 1850s and 1860s. As many as 60 enslaved workers toiled in the fields and constructed the mansion, smokehouse, sugar mill, and their own housing using bricks they made themselves. While emancipation ultimately brought the end of the plantation’s sugar production, the property remained notable as it was later purchased by former Texas Governor James Stephen Hogg. Hogg’s daughter, Ima, eventually donated the plantation to the State of Texas decades after a large reserve of oil was discovered on the property.

Uncover more than 100 years of the plantation’s past on a 45-minute tour guided by a knowledgeable docent, then explore the grounds to see the original outbuildings, pecan orchards, and Hogg’s own oversized outdoor bathtub. Located just an hour south of Houston near the town of West Columbia, the Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site is a must for Texas history enthusiasts.

Best time to go on a road trip from Virginia to Texas

In Texas the sun shines all year round, so a visit here can be enjoyed whatever the season. But with hot summer months, it's typically better to travel outside this peak period when the temperatures are more forgiving.

In the summer months from June to September, it can be particularly hot and humid. Temperatures can reach over 100 degrees Fahrenheit across Texas, so if you do visit during this time then make sure to pack plenty of provisions and water and travel early morning or evening to avoid the midday heat.

In winter temperatures can dip considerably lower, falling below 10 degrees Fahrenheit, so make sure to wrap up warm as you can also benefit from lower visitor numbers if you head here during this time.

Sunset across Houston Skyline

Visiting Texas in spring is a very popular time, as temperatures are nice and warm reaching around 70 degrees Fahrenheit and rising. It's a pretty time to travel and explore too, and plenty of visitors flock during this time.

In fall, temperatures sit around 60 degrees Fahrenheit from September to November, so this also makes for a pleasant time to visit. However, it can be busy so make sure to book any accommodation in particular, in advance.

Some highlights in the Houston calendar include the Livestock Show and Rodeo around February or early March, with more rodeo and cowboy celebrations taking place throughout the year including Southeast Texas State Fair in May.

In June, the popular Pride Houston takes place, where over 150,000 spectators marvel at the lively parades. In July the Freedom Over Texas Festival sees plenty of live entertainment and celebration to mark Independence Day.

In Dallas, there is also plenty going on. Visit between February and April and the beautiful Dallas Blooms event at the Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Garden is a must-see. Alongside the flowers are tasting events and live music.

In September is the State Fair of Texas, which brings parades and other attractions to the city. It's a fun event for all the family to celebrate local life.

It's worth keeping in mind that any popular events can prove busier for visitors, and make accommodation prices at a premium, so make sure to book ahead if your trip is coinciding with a popular event going on.
