29 Relaxation Trip Ideas to Clear Your Mind

1. unwind in mendoza, argentina's famous wine region in the andes.

d relax travel

Located on a plateau in the stunning Andean mountains, Mendoza is Argentina's largest wine region. The region is well known for its Malbec grapes that produce a full-bodied wine with juicy, dark fruit characteristics and a smoky finish. It pairs perfectly with an Argentinian steak.

If you love wine, Mendoza is the ideal place for a relaxing trip. With over 1,500 wineries, delicious Argentine restaurants and boutique vineyard hotels, you're in for a treat.

🍷 A perfect day:

Hire a private driver to shuttle you to two wineries in the morning for wine tastings, and then to a third winery for a delectable lunch. Back at your boutique hotel, let it all soak in and take in the views of the sun setting over the vineyards and mountains. It's a relaxing vacation filled with exceptional food and wine!

See our Argentina itinerary for the best wineries to visit.

2. Go beach hopping in Rio De Janeiro

d relax travel

Rio De Janeiro is known for its iconic beaches that have a fun atmosphere. Socializing and hanging out at the beach each day is a way of life for Cariocas (those born in Rio). If you're looking for tropical vibes with an energetic culture, Rio is the place to be.

Spend your days beach hopping and soaking in the hot sun. Have a lazy beach day at Ipanema Beach and grab a drink and some bites after at one of the sidewalk bars in the neighbourhood.

The next day, lounge at Praia Vermelha Beach and take the cable car next door up to Sugarloaf Mountain for some refreshing drinks with panoramic views.

See our list of 10 non-touristy things to do in Rio and start planning your trip.

3. Find solitude in Tofino, a surf town located on Canada's wild west coast

d relax travel

Tofino is the perfect nature escape. Located on the west coast of Vancouver Island, the surf capital of Canada is wild and remote but also ticks off all the boxes for a luxurious stay.

There is a good selection of luxury lodges, boutique hotels and cozy BnBs you can choose from with gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding forest. Tofino also has a burgeoning food scene with trendy restaurants serving Pacific-Northwest cuisine.

🌊 A perfect day:

Start your morning off right at the spa with a massage treatment. After deeply relaxing, head out for a walk along the beach and take special note of the old-growth cedar forest and the pure dense air.

After dining on fresh seafood, return to the beach and have a bonfire under the stars or hang back in your room by the cozy fireplace with a glass of wine. There's nothing quite like the sound of a crackling fire complemented by breaking ocean waves.

See our 3 Day Tofino itinerary and list of the 27 best things to do in Tofino .

4. Visit free-spirited Salt Spring Island for a nature escape

d relax travel

The bohemian Gulf Island located between Vancouver and Vancouver Island is known for its beautiful nature, artisan culture and organic, locally grown food.

Enjoy island life at one of the eclectic BnBs or charming boutique hotels. There are so many fun things to discover on the island. Shop at the Saturday Market, browse the farm stands, have a wine tasting at the wineries, visit a goat cheese farm, enjoy a lazy lunch at a cidery or unwind at a spa in the forest.

Take it slow, there is no rush, there are no traffic lights, you're now on island time . You may notice that the most relaxing effect occurs after your trip, as you reminisce about the simpler way of life that many live on the island.

See our full list of fun things to do on Salt Spring Island.

5. Pamper yourself at Sparkling Hill in BC's wine region

d relax travel

This is a hotel that we plan on staying in . We don't plan excursions, maybe just a walk around the outdoor trail. From the moment our bags are taken, our Sparkling Hill relaxation ritual begins.

🧖‍♀ 🧖 A perfect day:

You've woken up leisurely just in time to make it for breakfast. Today is massage day, which you picked out from a list of over 100 treatments. Grab a tea and tuck into your book or magazine in the scenic reading lounge. Afterwards, try out every steam room and sauna before dipping into the outdoor infinity pool.

Your biggest effort will be dressing up for a well earned dinner and cocktail. Don't forget to put a bottle of Prosecco on ice before dinner so you can continue your romantic evening with a candle lit bath. You will be glad you remembered to bring the tea lights and that bag of rose petals from the florist.

See our list of the 17 best weekend getaways from Vancouver for more details.

6. De-stress in the Canadian Rockies at a luxury mountain hotel

d relax travel

During the daytime go for a scenic canoe on the lake, pamper yourself at the spa, or enjoy lunch surrounded by flowers on the outdoor terraces.

As the sun goes down and the chill sets in, dine at Walliser Stube and enjoy the bubbling cheese fondue.

Afterwards, sip cocktails at Fairview Bar, a striking Art Deco bar located in the hotel. The raw and rugged beauty found throughout this land has a wonderful grounding effect that is sure to take away your stress.

See our Banff & Lake Louise itinerary and start planning your trip.

7. Go glamping on the West Coast of Canada

d relax travel

Oceanfront glamping on Hornby Island | Glamping in an Airstream on Pender Island

British Columbia is one of the best places to go glamping (luxury camping) in Canada. From quirky spots like decked out Airstreams with hot tubs in the middle of a forest, to luxury tents with queen sized beds looking out onto the ocean, there are many unique options to choose from.

Check out our two travel guides for some incredible glamping experiences in nature:

  • For oceanfront glamping at Fossil Beach Farm , check out our Hornby Island glamping guide .

8. Head to the Cotswolds in the English countryside for a tranquil nature escape

d relax travel

Broadway village in the Cotswolds

Escape the bustling city for the peaceful English countryside. The picturesque villages, gentle rolling hills and grazing sheep in the Cotswolds feel something of a fairytale. The region has a great selection of cozy boutique hotels that offer the right amount of luxury to unwind.

With over 25 towns and villages in the Cotswolds, it can feel overwhelming choosing where to stay.

We chose to stay near Broadway village since it ticked off all the boxes for a quintessential Cotswolds experience. The 'Jewel of the Cotswolds' is charming, yet large enough to have a good selection of cafes, restaurants, shops and unique hotels. The historic village also has nice walking paths through the countryside, which inspired famous artists like Claude Monet and Oscar Wilde.

See our Cotswolds itinerary and start planning your trip.

9. Wind down in Cap-Ferret, a chic town with remote Atlantic beaches

d relax travel

Located in the southwest of France, Cap Ferret is a chic beach town with a relaxed vibe. It's where the French like to escape for the weekend. Not to be confused with Cap Ferrat, a glitzy town on the French Riviera filled with jet-setters and mega yachts, Cap Ferret is instead luxurious in a discreet way.

Since the laidback beach town is located on the tip of a peninsula, it has miles and miles of wild, remote Atlantic beaches that are excellent for swimming or surfing.

It's also known as the oyster capital of France. You will find many oceanside restaurants serving fresh seafood and cold French white wine.

🏖 A perfect day:

Your first stop is the Cap Ferret market, a vibrant spot to pick out a beach blanket or a chic outfit to match the seaside lifestyle. Fresh oysters are on the menu for lunch and disappear quickly alongside delightfully refreshing chilled bottles of Entre-Deux-Mers wine.

That beach blanket will come in handy in the late afternoon as you find a unique spot on the golden sand between historic seaside bunkers and the wide expanse of the Atlantic. Don't forget the Champagne! Tomorrow will be a good day for a bike ride, or a repeat.

See our full list of 10 fun things to do in Cap Ferret .

10. Enjoy Greek island life on Santorini, a natural wonder of the world

d relax travel

Santorini is considered one of the most beautiful islands in Greece. The magnificent island is actually a submerged caldera that was formed by a volcanic eruption around 2,000 BC.

Santorini is picture perfect with its incredible sunsets, beaches and white buildings overlooking the sea. It's a romantic place to have a honeymoon or celebrate your anniversary.

Your days will consist of walking around the sunny island, lounging at the beach, admiring the view and feasting on delicious Greek food.

Visiting Santorini isn't cheap, especially in Oia, the most famous village on the island.

See our guide on how to do Santorini on a budget without giving up too many luxuries.

11. Find tranquility in Bali, a spiritual island with extraordinary beauty

d relax travel

Bali is a magical island known for its natural beauty and unique culture. The predominantly Hindu island has stunning sites and temples throughout the island. It also has a fascinating holistic health and wellness culture.

If you are seeking a trip for personal wellness, Bali is the ideal place to do it. In Ubud, the cultural centre of Bali, you will find retreats and centres for alternative therapies like yoga, chakra energy healing, meditation and Ayurveda.

Ubud also has many inexpensive spas that will leave you on cloud nine. Our favourite, Karsa Spa, is located at the end of a ridge walk through the rainforest. The city is surrounded by the rainforest and terraced rice fields, which provide tranquility and a relaxed state of mind.

If you travel to the south of Bali, you will find a tropical paradise. The Bukit Peninsula is known as one of the best destinations in the world for surfing. Scooter around the island to discover white sand beaches and watch the surfers surf into the sunset.

See our 1 week Bali itinerary including amazing places to stay.

12. Float in the Dead Sea for a health detox

d relax travel

The Dead Sea is the lowest place on earth (420m below sea level) and the water is 8.6x saltier than the ocean!

Floating in the Dead Sea was a childhood dream come true for both of us and exceeded all of our expectations (a rare occurrence). It was one of our favourite activities during our time in Israel. It feels like you're floating in outer space.

Other than the cool effect of floating in the Dead Sea, there are many health benefits to visiting the area. The raw mud is said to remove skin impurities, provide relief for pain and reduce inflammation thanks to its unique mineral composition.

Get messy and give yourself a full body mud mask at the beach and let it soak into your skin . Another unique trait of this other-worldly environment is the oxygen-rich air known to have several health benefits.

There are resorts at the Dead Sea, but you can easily take a day trip from Jerusalem.

See our Israel & Jordan itinerary , which includes a stop at the Dead Sea.

13. Drink wine, eat Tuscan cuisine and relax in the Tuscan countryside

d relax travel

Tuscany is a region in the centre of Italy known for its beautiful countryside and famous red wines made with Sangiovese grapes , such as Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti. It's a wine drinkers paradise.

Visiting the Tuscan countryside offers a break from busy tourist centres, immersing you in a scenic and relaxing culinary journey. Driving through rolling hills to explore hilltop towns and wineries is a highlight.

The three wine regions we recommend visiting in Tuscany are Chianti, Montalcino and Montepulciano.

See our 5 day Tuscany itinerary .

14. Explore the Amalfi Coast by boat

d relax travel

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most scenic regions in Italy. Picturesque villages scatter across a rocky cliffside overlooking the sapphire sea. The region is known for its limoncello liqueur and delicious, fresh seafood.

Driving the windy roads on the Amalfi Coast can be stressful since they are small and there are lots of tour buses. For a relaxing, entirely new way to see this gorgeous coastline, hire a boat for the day.

Your ocean voyage will take you past beautiful beaches, houses, caves and the stunning village of Positano during golden hour. When it gets too hot, dive from the bow into the blue sea or kick back with an Aperol Spritz. Don't forget to make a boat party playlist for the occasion!

See our Italy itinerary , which includes tips for staying on the Amalfi Coast and how to rent a boat.

15. Spend time on the glamorous island of Capri

d relax travel

Capri is a glamorous and star-studded island with beautiful natural sights and aqua-green waters. Many celebs moor their mega yachts at Marina Piccolo Harbour and dine and party in Capri at night.

You will love Capri if you like lounging at the beach, luxury shopping and eating Italian cuisine.

🥔🔎 Fun Fact: Capri's most famous dish is the Caprese salad.

See our ultimate Italy itinerary , which includes a stop in Capri.

16. Discover Piedmont, Italy's underrated wine region

d relax travel

This northwest region of Italy is emerging as a prominent destination thanks to its sustainable luxury hotels, slow-food culinary culture, renowned wineries and white-truffle foraging opportunities.

Its gorgeous landscape, characterized by expansive vine-covered hills and the backdrop of the Alps makes it a gem that won't stay under the radar for long. When we travelled there, we hardly saw any international tourists, just Italians on vacation.

You'll spend your days driving through scenic hills, exploring quaint villages, eating farm-to-table cuisine with spectacular views and tasting exceptional wines, like Barolo and Barbaresco.

Read our 3 Day Piedmont itinerary and start planning your trip.

17. Experience the glamorous "jet-setting" lifestyle in Portofino

d relax travel

Portofino is a lavish getaway that draws in jet-setters and celebrities cruising in on their yachts. It's like stepping into a postcard from the Italian Riviera.

It may have less local charm since it's popular with international tourists, but it oozes with glamour and beauty. It's the ideal spot for indulging in the tourist experience, enjoying pasta and spritzes by the harbour, people-watching and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere.

Dressing up and feeling fabulous, along with leisurely dips in secluded coves, are part of the allure. Portofino also offers top-notch luxury shopping.

See our guide on how to spend a day in Portofino .

18. Stay at a ryokan in Hakone and soak in volcanic hot spring baths

d relax travel

Hakone is a town nestled in the mountains and forest just 2 hours outside of Tokyo. It's where the Japanese like to travel to for a relaxing escape.

In Hakone, most ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) have onsens, which are steaming volcanic hot spring baths brimming with mineral rich waters. Ryokans allow guests to relax in a homey and authentic Japanese setting.

The stress from work and the city seems to melt away from the moment you put on your traditional Yukata robe. You are now in another place, steeped in tradition and set in harmony with a serene landscape. It's the ultimate blissful escape into nature.

A Ryokan is a half-board experience and meals are served Kaiseki style (multi-course Japanese dishes) in your room by your dedicated room attendant.

Save lots of time to soak in the public onsens. Some ryokans feature private onsens in your room if you're up for the splurge. A great way to cool off after the onsen is with an ice cold Asahi beer or a shochu cocktail at your stay.

See our 2 week Japan itinerary , which includes a stop in Hakone.

19. Have an idyllic vacation in the Maldives

d relax travel

Perfect white sand beaches, crystalline turquoise waters, palm trees, over-the-water huts, dolphins jumping in the distance... is it too good to be true?

We didn't believe it, but YES, this TV commercial fantasy truly exists in the Maldives. And we actually did see spinner dolphins jumping in the distance from our room!

What makes the Maldives so special is that it's not just one big island, but a group of 1,190 tiny coral islands. At times, it can feel like you're on your own private island.

🐬 A perfect day:

Pinch yourself because it's not a dream. Stretch out and have your coffee as you watch the ocean flash every imaginable shade of blue. Your morning ritual continues on your leisurely bike ride to breakfast.

Now it's time to head to the pool or beach for your first dose of sun. After the sun has reached its peak, a little bit of exercise or play is on the cards - swim against the pool current generator, go snorkelling, play tennis, or workout in the ice cold gym.

You've earned a big dinner. The cool night air welcomes you on your bike ride to your choice of top-notch restaurants. Let the stars guide you on your way back home, just make sure you're not too wobbly!

See our review of Kandima Maldives , a lifestyle resort done right.

20. Stay in a kasbah in the Atlas Mountains

d relax travel

Once used as strongholds by tribal groups, many kasbahs have now been converted into impressive hotels where travellers can enjoy a relaxing escape in nature. They are known for their unique geometric designs and sturdy walls made from rammed earth.

Staying at a kasbah is a great way to take in Morocco's natural beauty and hospitality in the Atlas Mountains.

  • Kasbah Tamadot - best for luxury
  • Kasbah Bab Ourika - best for the view

See our 5 Day Morocco itinerary .

21. Stay at a luxury hotel in the mystical Sacred Valley

d relax travel

The Sacred Valley of Peru has a magical spirit. It was part of the Incan Empire and got its name from the high fertility of its land. The Sacred Valley is located between Cusco and Machu Picchu, making it a great stop between the two locations for a relaxing stay.

See our full review of Sol y Luna in the Sacred Valley.

Saint Lucia

22. go beach hopping around the volcanic island of st. lucia.

d relax travel

Soufriere region of Saint Lucia

The volcanic island of St. Lucia is a natural wonder with its lush rainforests, gorgeous beaches, geothermal springs and green mountains. One of the biggest draws of the island are its dormant twin volcanic peaks called Gros Piton and Petit Piton.

St. Lucia's natural beauty combined with its selection of luxurious boutique hotels and amenities make it easy to de-stress . Spend your days exploring new beaches, sunbathing, swimming or snorkelling, and cap it off with a magical sunset over the Pitons.

See our 1 week St. Lucia itinerary , which includes our favourite beaches.

23. Beach hop on La Digue Island

d relax travel

To this day, La Digue Island has the most beautiful beaches we've ever seen. Thanks to the Seychelles' remote location northeast of Madagascar and its local efforts, its beaches have stayed pristine.

La Digue is one of the 115 islands in the Seychelles famous for its beaches with granite boulders sculpted over millions of years. It creates a setting that feels almost prehistoric.

We love how La Digue is car free and small enough to bike around on.

These are the top beaches we visited on La Digue:

  • Cocos Beach - chill out by the beach bar with a fruity rum cocktail and don't miss the sheltered natural pool at the very end.
  • Anse Source d'Argent - rent a kayak so you can see an amazing view of the famous granite boulders from afar.
  • Anse Peirrot Beach - can be reached by a short kayak ride.
  • Anse Marron - a secluded beach you can only access by hiking with a local guide.
  • Anse Reunion - for a sunset dinner.

Read our 3 Day La Digue itinerary .

24. Relax poolside at Marina Bay Sands, home to the largest rooftop infinity pool in the world

d relax travel

Spending the day at the 146 meter long rooftop pool is a real treat. The catch? You can only swim in it if you are a hotel guest. It's worth the splurge for the exclusive access. You are guaranteed not to have a crowded pool and you won't have to fight for a lounge chair.

We loved ordering piña coladas and Singapore slings between dips. Swimming to the edge is an amazing feeling and an incredible way to take in Singapore's city skyline.

After a full day of lounging at the pool, order room service and have a romantic private dinner. Rooms have floor to ceiling windows and you can either choose a garden view, city view or harbour view.

For a fancy night out, dine at one of Asia's 50 Best Restaurants and sip cocktails at the astounding art deco bar, ATLAS.

See our fabulous 2 day Singapore itinerary and start planning your trip.

Switzerland

25. indulge in swiss cuisine and stay at a boutique hotel with a view of the matterhorn.

d relax travel

Zermatt is a town in the Swiss Alps known for its incredible hiking and skiing, but it can stand alone as a restful vacation with its luxury boutique hotels, breathtaking Matterhorn views and delicious Swiss cuisine. The town is equally as stunning in the summer as it is in the winter, and it has plenty of shops and restaurants.

Indulge yourself with the Swiss classics like cheese fondue, meat fondue or our favourite dish, raclette. Raclette is a dish where bubbling, melted cheese is scraped off a wheel onto your plate of potatoes. It's so good! For fine dining, spoil yourself at After Seven, a Michelin starred restaurant with innovative dishes.

See our list of fun things to do in Zermatt in Summer and Zermatt in Winter .

26. Have an extravagant weekend in Bangkok

d relax travel

Bangkok is the perfect city to go all out and have an extravagant weekend.

Luxury experiences like dining at Michelin-starred restaurants, staying at five-star hotels and drinking cocktails at rooftop bars rival those found in major cities like NYC, London or Tokyo, but they come at more affordable prices.

✨ A perfect day:

See our 3 day Bangkok itinerary and start planning your extravagant trip.

27. Enjoy tropical waters in Koh Lipe, Thailand's secret island paradise

d relax travel

Koh Lipe is a hidden gem of an island located in the south of Thailand that is frequented by Thai vacationers. The beautiful island is known as the "Maldives of Thailand" for its white sand beaches and turquoise waters.

It's also known as one of the best places for diving and snorkelling with its abundance of marine life. Koh Lipe is not the easiest island to get to, which has kept it from becoming overly developed from international tourism.

See our Koh Lipe guide to start planning your trip to this tropical oasis.

28. Spend a fabulous weekend in Dubai

d relax travel

Dubai has rapidly turned from a small fishing village to one of the most opulent cities in the world. The Middle Eastern city holds over 300 Guinness World Records , like the world's tallest building, highest infinity pool, biggest ferris wheel... the list goes on!

14 Incredible Destinations If You Need Peace and Relaxation

d relax travel

Daily stress can take its toll on your mind and body, which is why sometimes you just need to get completely out of your element to really relax. A peaceful getaway can not only rejuvenate your body but also clear your mind so you're totally refreshed when it's finally time to get back to the real world. And isn't that the point of taking a vacation in the first place?

The most relaxing place to go, however, depends on your personal preference. For some, a relaxing vacation might mean soaking up the sun on a tropical beach, while for others it might mean following a trail on a windy coastline with few other people in sight. No matter where you go, you're bound to find a place that's dedicated to your tranquility. We scoured our favorite places around the world and found the destinations where we hope you will find your next relaxing vacation.

Kauai, Hawaii

There are many relaxing places in Hawaii, but Kauai is particularly special. Known as the Garden Island, here you can find empty beaches like Lumahai Beach, as well as breathtaking landscapes like the vast Waimea Canyon State Park . You can also book a sunset cruise of the Nāpali Coast with a tour company like Holo Holo Charters to appreciate the island's unique geology from the water. To help you make your vacation the most relaxing possible, there are many wonderful resorts on the island like Koloa Landing , where you can enjoy sprawling grounds and spacious rooms and suites big enough for the whole family.

Cape Elizabeth, Maine

What could be more idyllic than strolling the cape and exploring lighthouses? This town is the home of the Cape Elizabeth Light (or Two Lights Lighthouse) which has been active since 1874. In addition to the interesting history and classic New England architecture, Cape Elizabeth is one of the best places to get juicy lobster. You will find plenty of tranquility here on the rocks, and also at accommodations like Inn by the Sea , one of Maine's best luxury hotels with relaxing in-room amenities like cozy fireplaces and soaking tubs.

Banff National Park, Canada

Banff National Park is chock-full of amazing scenery and crystalline lakes, but Lake Louise might be the best (and most relaxing) of them all. Campers and hikers alike can settle by its perfectly blue waters and gaze at mountain views that seem almost too pristine to be real — luckily, it is. And it's quite possibly the perfect relaxing vacation for lovers of the great outdoors, whether you want to hike or just set yourself up in a landmark hotel like Fairmont Banff Springs .

Tenorio Volcano National Park, Costa Rica

Located in northern Costa Rica , Tenorio Volcano National Park is one of the country's most incredible natural wonderlands, without the crowds that tend to go to parks closer to the coast. Here, Rio Celeste is known for its vivid blue color, almost unlike any other waterfall in the world. The bright color is caused by a reaction of the volcanic chemicals in the water, but against the tropical backdrop and rushing waters, it looks magical. Nearby, you'll also find one of the most beautiful jungle hotels in the world, the Rio Celeste Hideaway Hotel .

East Sussex, England

Lovers of pastoral landscapes and dramatic coastlines will find their paradise in the southern reaches of England. Rolling green hills and proximity to the English Channel make Seven Sisters the quintessential countryside you've read about in Victorian novels. You'll also find the iconic white chalk cliffs if you decide to take a stroll there. For golfers who love nothing more than to unwind on the green, the nearby East Sussex National Resort boasts two championship courses.

Nordfjord, Norway

Nordfjord is one of the top destinations in Norway thanks to its breathtaking views. Visitors can take a long, slow pleasure cruise along the fjord and see a wide array of sights including glaciers, mountains, and the open sea — all in just a two-hour trip . If you visit during the winter, you may be able to see the northern lights , which will no doubt add to the already awe-inspiring scenery of the fjords.

Blue Lagoon, Iceland

Makito Umekita/Travel + Leisure

The Blue Lagoon is by far the most popular tourist destination that Iceland has to offer. This geothermal spa is located in a lava field and attached to a world-renowned resort , where you can soak in the warm waters even when the temperatures are freezing outside. Choose the Lagoon Suite for direct access to the waters from your room. After you've soaked your stress away, Iceland has many empty and scenic landscapes that you can explore during your relaxing vacation.

The Ionian Islands, Greece

Home to the Instagram-famous Navagio Beach, the Ionian Islands are some of the most popular for travelers in Greece . You'll find the most peace and quiet on the under-the-radar island of Paxos where there are few resorts but many lovely vacation homes. On the island of Zakynthos, there are many other towns and beaches gorgeous enough to make anyone scrolling through your Instagram swoon with envy, including Navagio and the remains of the cargo ship MV Panagiotis that got stuck there in 1980 during a storm.

Provence, France

Lose yourself in the gorgeous vineyards and captivating views of the Alps while you're in this famous French region — but know it's not all wine here. Provence is celebrated for its biodiversity and famous for olive groves, pine forests, and lavender fields, as well as grapes. Nice, Marseille, the French Riviera, and Avignon are all popular places to visit while in the region. Settle in a lush countryside retreat for your relaxing vacation like the lavender-surrounded Coquillade Provence Resort & Spa , named the best resort in France by Travel + Leisure readers in 2022 .

Whitsunday Islands National Park, Australia

Irjaliina Paavonpera/Travel + Leisure

Australia is a massive country with lots of wide-open spaces to plan a relaxing vacation, but if you go offshore to the Whitsunday Islands, located off the coast of Queensland near the Great Barrier Reef, you can visit one of the world's most beautiful beaches . On Whitehaven Beach, the pure white silica sand and emerald waters create a gorgeous palette of colors that is a feast for the senses. If you go north to Hill Inlet, you'll see a mesmerizing swirl of white and blue, created by shifting sands and water.

Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

In Kenya, many travelers visit the Maasai Mara in hopes of seeing wild animals and to experience a stay in a luxury safari camp. Wild animals may not be everyone's idea of relaxation, but adventurers in need of some repose can journey to the Saruni Samburu Safari Camp , which offers a Wellbeing Space with a pool, spa, and dining areas. After a morning game drive, you can let the adrenaline simmer down with a spa treatment or a few sips of wine with a view.

Bali, Indonesia

In Indonesia, the island of Bali has become synonymous these days with yoga retreats in the jungles of Ubud and the beaches of Canggu. You'll find plenty of luxury resorts and hotels on the island, as well as beaches and historic temples. Beyond enjoying the relaxed, coastal living that travelers have come to expect from a trip to Bali , capturing the colorful sunset (or sunrise) along the shallow waters of Sanur Beach is a must-do. Plus, we've already got the pack list you need to get started.

Ise Shima National Park, Japan

Located on the coastline east of Osaka , Ise Shima is a national park that encompasses a thriving mainland forest and many islands waiting to be explored. Peace and quiet don't begin to describe the beauty of Ise Jingu, a grand Shinto shrine located in the park and dedicated to the Japanese goddess Amaterasu. Even though it's a widely known tourist attraction, the shrine complex maintains its tranquility. It is one of the holiest places in Japan , and people often go there to revere its architecture, natural scenery, and historical significance.

Halong Bay, Vietnam

If you're looking for serene blue and green waters, look no further than Halong Bay. This beautiful body of water is most popular with boat lovers who want to spend some days on the water, or perhaps exploring the limestone islands and coastal forests. The area is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site since it's home to dozens of species of plants and animals. You'll find lots of places to stay around the bay, but the best way to experience this destination is by hopping aboard a cruise ship so you can catch every angle of this relaxing destination.

Pack properly

When it comes to organizing your holiday, spontaneity can be really fun. Booking flights, activities, and restaurants all can be improved with a sprinkling of carpe diem. For packing, however, organization is key. Whatever you do, don’t leave packing until the day of travel. There will undoubtedly be a few items that spring to mind just before you head out the door, so make sure you aren’t already frazzled and sick of packing when that happens.

Making a list is always helpful in ensuring you don’t forget anything important, but if you’re not a list kind of person, then just make sure you give yourself enough time to remember anything important. Start with the essentials: passport , phone, charger, keys, wallet, visas or travel documents, prescription medication .

Throwing a bunch of mismatched clothing items is never the best policy, so think of what the weather will be like at your destination, dress codes at any fancy restaurants or events you might be attending, cozy outfits for evenings in, and suitable footwear for a variety of activities (there’s nothing worse than discovering the only shoes you’ve brought give you blisters on day one). For toiletries, packing your liquids in a transparent plastic bag will save you time during security, so you aren’t frantically scrambling through your bags while in line.

Structure and schedules can help

Organized fun may not  always  be the best kind of fun, but when it comes to being able to enjoy your holiday to the fullest, sometimes a little structure is the best way to achieve that. Think about what you want to get out of your vacation: Is there a particular restaurant you want to try ? A museum you’ve been desperate to visit? A beach you can picture yourself snoozing on? Doing your research will help guarantee you can slot in everything you want to experience during your trip.

Booking restaurants or bars in advance will save you valuable time; buying tickets for galleries or museums means that you won’t be forced to wait in line for hours on end; and a quick Google search of a beach will tell you how long you need to leave for transport there and back, plus anything else of note (when does it get crowded, are there sun beds, are there places for food nearby, etc.).

Of course, leave yourself some time for last-minute decisions and spontaneity . The unexpected is often the most fun, but only if you’re in the best mindset to embrace it when it appears.

Spend some time outside

For most of us, the majority of our working days are spent indoors. Vacations are a great time to get some much-needed fresh air and vitamin D, plus there can be some serious health benefits to getting outdoors on your holidays. “Spending time in nature helps travelers relax by reducing their mental fatigue, boosting happiness, and restoring their concentration,” Dr. Mahrukh Khwaja, a Positive Psychologist (MAPP), founder of Mind Ninja, and author of  Navigating A Squiggly Life , tells Traveler . “An unthreatening natural environment allows the mind to wander freely and relaxes the brain’s strong focus on specific tasks.”

That’s not to say you need to prioritize exercise on your holidays, but raising your heart rate slightly during a trip, be it from walking, swimming, hiking , or dancing, can do wonders for your ability to relax for the rest of your time away. “Studies show that travelers spending time in nature and taking part in hikes, walks, or cycling exhibit a reduction in the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and hypertension,” Dr. Khwaja explains. “Research also shows that tourists staying in green environments produce lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol.” All that to say, simply spending more time outdoors can help you relax on your travels and therefore more fully enjoy your time away.

Soak up the local culture

Immersing yourself in a new place’s culture and history can help you unwind. It can be hard to switch off from the stresses of home, whether that is stressing about your workload when you return, resisting the urge to check your emails, or worrying about family members waiting for you at home. Meeting new people , learning new things, and educating yourself about the place you are visiting can help you get out of your head and momentarily forget those stressors waiting for you.

“Taking holidays can enhance our quality of life and happiness through the experience of new, novel moments, increasing our sense of meaning, and an increase in positive emotions, such as awe, gratitude, and curiosity when we immerse ourselves in different cultures,” Dr. Khwaja says. “Studies also report that traveling and taking a break from work reduces work stress, exhaustion, and absenteeism through the practice of switching off, slowing down, and prioritizing experiences that nourish travelers.”

Cognisomatic hypnotherapist  Jessica Boston  explains why broadening your horizons might help your mental health long after your holiday ends. “Being in a different environment to our usual one challenges the algorithms of our perceptual reality. Our subconscious mind makes sense of the world through our standardized algorithms of safety and possibility,” she explains. “When we are on holiday , our subconscious mind takes information in and decides if something is the same, similar, or different to something it already knows, and then takes action on how to respond appropriately—for example, recognizing any potential threats or danger).”

Traveling gives us a perfect time to exercise these mental skills. Boston goes on to say, “It’s easy through times of stress for these processes of coming to terms with our perceptual reality to get more narrow. We become lazy and more ‘blanket’ in how we perceive new experiences, which can damage our mental health. Travel challenges our perceptual reality and sets off a chain reaction where we can make sense of the wider world more easily. This can help us become more hopeful of what we can achieve beyond our basic understanding and, therefore, help us to feel better. We begin to think: ‘If this is possible, what else is possible?’”

Take your time

We rush around every day, running to catch trains and hurrying through our commutes, finishing off tasks as quickly as possible and willing the clock to move faster so we can finish work and rush back home . It can be tempting to treat holidays the same way—rushing to make sure you can squeeze in everything you want to do in a short period of time. But holidays are a time to pause and slow things down. It’s not often that we return to a destination more than once, so it’s important to appreciate the little things as much as possible. Pacing yourself through activities and things you’d like to do means you give yourself the time to actually enjoy each individual moment. Give yourself longer time periods that you think you might need to explore, so that if you end up really enjoying something in particular, you don’t need to rush onto the next thing.

Practice mindfulness

Before you skip this section, hear me out. I don’t mean you need to meditate on your next holiday (although if you’d like to do so, go ahead). Being mindful allows you to appreciate things you may otherwise have overlooked. Take your time to think about all the different sights, smells, sounds, and tastes of your new surroundings. Looking up, for example, is a travel tip I’ve often received; as weird as it sounds, by glancing upwards now and then you might catch sight of intriguing architecture, tiled buildings, murals on walls, or—if you’re lucky—a buzzing rooftop bar you won’t have noticed otherwise.

“In our hectic daily lives, the urgent pace driven by our anxieties and a demanding culture often keeps us from being in the present moment,” Boston explains. “There is a bid for attention from so many outlets, and anything related to survival keeps us constantly watching for imminent danger. This habitual state makes it challenging to be truly present as our minds continuously w1orks overtime.”

“Stepping away from the familiar environment that reinforces these patterns offers a natural break from survival cycles,” she expands. “Slowing down to pay attention to new cultures, sights, and sounds helps us to be fully in the present, which recalibrates our relationship with time and effortlessly realigns our priorities. Suddenly, the pressure of a work email diminishes when juxtaposed with centuries of history or diverse ways of life. By slowing down, you will find that you discover new aspects of yourself and find simple joys that remind you that now is the time is now to fully enjoy yourself. Your ability to practice being present will reshape your perspective and reposition your priorities leading to a greater sense of inner peace.”

“The pressure of a work email diminishes when juxtaposed with centuries of history or diverse ways of life.”

Dr. Khwaja agrees: “A key way in which our brain can benefit from traveling is through the practice of being mindful abroad. Researchers report practicing mindfulness as a tourist, such as increasing awareness of our external environment, grounding ourselves to the present moment, and non-judgmental perception about a destination has positive impacts on our wellbeing, actions, and thinking responses. Mindfulness allows us to move from stress to awareness and broadens our attention to reframe life circumstances in a positive way.”

Treat yourself while on your trip

Obviously, a vacation in itself is a treat—and it can be an expensive one at that. But if you are already going on holiday, then it’s important to make sure that you aren’t spending the entire trip worrying about how much everything costs and scrimping on experiences while you’re there. This harks back to the earlier point about organization: If you plan accordingly, you’ll be able to balance out more affordable experiences with some finer ones too. A vacation is supposed to be a spoiling experience, so make sure you give yourself the opportunity to enjoy the trip as much as you can afford to.

Don’t put too much pressure on the vacation

Having said that, it’s equally as important to realize that a holiday is not always guaranteed to go entirely smoothly. It’s helpful to remind yourself that you are in a new-to-you place and you cannot plan for every potential. There are endless amounts of variables that can occur, and attempting to plan for all of them is never going to work. Do what you can to prepare yourself physically and mentally, but once you arrive at your destination, try your best to relinquish attempts to control anything and everything. This is a chance for you to fully relax, kick back, and enjoy the little time we get each year to let things unfold naturally.

  • Budget Travel Tips

Travel is fun. Personally, it’s my favorite thing to do. But visiting forgiven places isn’t always glamour. Overcoming travel anxiety and relaxing while traveling aren’t always easy. Sometimes we pack too much into a short itinerary, or a flight delay can sink all of your best-laid plans.

Don’t worry, you’re not the only one. It happens to pretty much everyone.

So exactly how do you relax while traveling? De-stress while on the road? These 14 tips are what I’ve learned helps me unwind as I travel.

I’d love to hear what works and what doesn’t for You. Drop me a comment at the end of this post!

How you can reduce travel anxiety when planning a trip

Every trip requires some level of planning, whether that’s just the flights to another country or everything is throughout planned down to the restaurants and accommodation.

Reducing travel anxiety is a great way of making relaxing while traveling much easier to accomplish. Even if you’re not really one for planning every aspect of a trip, there are some small things you can do to make it easier to relax when on your adventure.

So, here are my 14 best tips for relaxing while traveling!

Tips for relaxing when traveling

1. Make sure you’re protected before you leave home

If you can’t afford travel insurance , you can’t afford to travel

If something goes wrong while you’re traveling, if you’ve made sure you’ve protected yourself, it will likely be much easier to deal with.

I’ve had many conversations with travelers who don’t buy travel insurance for their trips. It honestly makes me nervous for them . What if something is stolen? Passport, camera, phone, wallet – all of these things would suck to have to replace while traveling, but at least the cost is covered.

What if you get sick while traveling? Doctor’s visits can be expensive! I have a good friend who broke his leg while in the United States and almost got sued! In my mind, running the risk of no travel.insurance just isn’t worth it.

Covering yourself financially is a huge step in creating a fun and enjoyable kindest to travel!

Book travel insurance before you leave – or you can purchase it while you’re traveling if your cover has expired.

These travelers are glad to have had travel insurance!

2. Photocopy your important travel documents

So your bag gets stolen, and while you’re covered financially from travel insurance, you still have no passport or cards to access your money.

Having a photocopy of your important travel documents is a great idea to save you the stress of having no identification at all.

There are few places you want to have access to these copies:

  • In a different bag with you. Have a desperate pocket to keep a spare set of these documents in. Keeping the photocopies with your passport doesn’t help if everything is misplaced or stolen. Keep them well hidden, and accessible.
  • With a trusted family member or friend back home. If anything happens, your loved ones back home have a copy of an official document to identify you. They can also send you a copy electronically if the need arises.
  • In your email address. Another great place to have a set of copies stored. You can’t lose these. If you have internet, you can access them. It’s also a good thing to name the subject of an email something that won’t entice an unwelcome visitor in your email to click.
  • On your phone, saved as an offline document. Keep it well hidden, or in a locked app on your phone. Even if you don’t have internet access, you have your documents safe.

Photocopies are a great way to reduce the stress of losing important documents. Sometimes photocopies are good enough to use and means you don’t even have to remove your originals from your back/hostel.

3. Plan your trip well

Planning your trip is a good way to reduce travel anxiety and helps you relax while traveling. This isn’t for every traveler, as I know I like to leave a few days at least spare in case I want to change my plan. But having a rough outline of what you want to do while you’re traveling reduces the options that can create a very overwhelming situation when deciding where to go next.

Are you looking to hire a vehicle? Booking ahead of time saves a lot of frustration if everywhere suddenly is booked.out and ruins your schedule. The same goes for public transportation and flights. It’s usually a good idea to have the modes of traveling booked and sorted so being stranded isn’t likely.

You don’t need to plan everything. In fact, there are good reasons not to (see right below), but planning to some degree is a great way to make sure you are able to visit all the places on your list, and also not be too late and everything book out.

The thing you may want to plan and book before you leave:

  • Any long-distance buses/trains or flights (Asia)
  • Accommodation (I love Booking.com and Hostelworld )
  • Any specific tours you want to take

Taking out some of the major variables can make travel much more relaxing and enjoyable.

Take time to relax while traveling

4. Keep some days up your sleeve

Things go wrong in travel. It happens to everyone and sometimes no amount of planning can avoid it. Shit happens and the only way forward to roll with the punches. In other words, don’t over-plan your travel itinerary.

What happens if your flight is canceled and there’s no other one you can take that day? If you’re running on a super tight schedule, the trickle-down effects of missing that flight might ruin everything else you have planned. Replanning can cause a lot of stress. You should be enjoying your travels, not worrying about a contingency plan.

Having loose plans with a day or two spare can help make problems you run into on the road much more manageable, and might prevent from a last-minute, stressful replanning session.

5. Pack your bag smart

Packing your travel bag with the right items is one of the most important steps of planning a trip.

Traveling in the southeast Asian monsoon season can be challenging, especially if your rain jacket isn’t completely waterproof. Finding a suitable replacement could be a challenge and cost a chunk of time better spent experiencing a new destination.

Weather isn’t the only factor to consider while making sure your bag is packed right .

What activities do you plan on doing? If you’re trekking, good shoes, sun protection and electrolyte packets are all things to consider.

How you pack your travel bag carried greatly on where you will be traveling to. But a badly packed bag that’s missing some key items needed on your travels will only make hunting these items in a foreign country usually much harder.

Here’s an easy to follow PDF to plan and pack for travel .

6. Learn some of the local language and customs

By learning a few simple phrases or customs of your future travel destination , you are more likely to be more comfortable with this foreign country as soon as you step off the plane.

The phrases can be simple. Even one-word basics like hello, yes and no can help break the ice of a new place. One of my favorite that’s often overlooked is learning “where is the toilet?” in a local dialect. It isn’t the most common, but knowing it will defiantly help you out in a pinch.

By learning basic customs, you’re already adjusting to the new destination. This can also help reduce culture shock . It will mean you’re more open to learning from travel and allow you to embrace the differences quicker and easier.

7. Reduce travel anxiety and relax while actually traveling

So, you’re all packed and insured for travel. You’ve planned everything well. But you’re still struggling to relax, unwind and ultimately, still have bouts of travel anxiety.

Luckily, there are things you can do while you’re actually traveling to help reduce the stress of travel. It’s not always as easy as it sounds and some of these travel anxiety tips take practice and patience.

8. Take recovery days

I love to travel fast. To fit as much into my short window of visiting a city or town as I can. But this leads to travel burn out. Exhaustion can make a place less interesting, or interactions with people frustrating.

Taking recovery days out of your busy travel schedule recharges your batteries and makes the next encounter or destination more enjoyable as you can engage better.

You can take a day out to relax on a warm and sunny beach, or go on a pub crawl and let loose a little. Whatever works for you should be your recovery day tactics.

9. Talk to other people – locals and travelers

Talking to others is a common way to enjoy travel more. Talking to others, whether that be locals or fellow travelers, gives different perspectives and creating new travel friendships is a great way to enjoy your time traveling more.

Fellow travelers can give tips on what to see (and what to skip) and why. This is why hostels are so great – there are so many chances to interact and make friends. Sometimes these travel friendships last much longer than your return flight home.

Talking with locals is often my favorite way to learn and immerse yourself in a new culture. The stories locals provide are great insights into life whoever you are in the world and gives a new appreciation for not only the people but places as well.

Explore a country slowly

10. Keep an open mind while traveling

This is a cliche tip. But it’s true. Travelers with their minds closed off to new experiences are missing out on one of the travel’s most important aspects – growing as a person.

Experiencing everything with an open mind allows you to take in stories, sights, history, customs and learn from them. Drawing parallels from your own life to these foreign ways of life enables you to appreciate travel more. Appreciating something is a sign of a positive encounter and leads to being more fulfilled in travel.

While this is a common phrase, traveling with an open mind isn’t always easy. Sometimes you’re faced with something you just can’t agree with, and that’s also okay. Changing your perspective when it crosses your moral and ethical lines isn’t always the right thing to do. Keeping an open mind while traveling is about being open to the possibility of change, rather than forcing change upon yourself.

11. Keep a travel journal of your experiences

This is one of my personal favorites on how to reduce travel stress tips.

Writing down your travel experiences, good, bad, and ugly is a great way to keep memories safe from forgetful minds, but an unreliable way to vent and work through problems you face while traveling.

Just writing something down can put it in a new perspective and allow your mind to apart and overcome an issue. Many things cause frustrations in travel. Delays, foreign concepts and inconsiderate hostel roommates to name just a few. Sometimes facing your issues head on isn’t really helpful and won’t get you a good solution. Writing your thoughts and feelings down is my favorite way to deal with issues that would otherwise bottle up inside and cause irrational and agitate behavior.

Plus, I have a terrible memory. Writing experiences; sights and sounds of an attraction, smell and taste of a local dish or the touch of the golden grains of sand on a sunny beach – you just can’t describe it as well when you’re back at your home. Write it down, you won’t regret it.

12. Exercise in any way you can

I’m terrible for this. One week I’ll overnight trek and be so exhausted for the next week I just want to sit by a pool and drink beer. One extreme to the next perhaps?

Regularly exercising helps you stay in shape physically and mentally. A heavy mind is the breeding grounds for a happy travelers mindset.

Exercising while travel is important

13. Eat well – that means more fruit and less beer

Once again, I often find myself breaking this rule too often! I’ll have a beer with dinner without a second thought, but packing fruit for a snack throughout the day is often much harder.

However, it is important to eat healthy while on the road. Not only does this prevent getting sick but it helps your body has the energy and calories to burn as you explore throughout the day and night.

Undereating is a perfect way to get hangry (anger caused by hunger) and not enjoy your time while suffering from a grumbling stomach.

Lunch is always my biggest hurdle. I get so wrapped up in a destination, seeing sights and making memories, I forget my stomach is screaming for nourishment. It’s never worth It!

14. Just keep on smiling – even if you don’t feel like it

Smiling isn’t always easy. Being miserable does happen. Sometimes just forcing yourself to smile can positively impact your mood, making all the mountains of problems seem much less steep.

Don’t get me wrong, pretending you’re happy when you’re sad isn’t what I’m getting at with this travel stress tip. Being honest with yourself is important to ride to ft and overcome travel anxiety.

But throwing a smile at the next person that crosses your path isn’t the same as lying to yourself to make you happy. Smiling is contagious. Not just for that random person you just randomly grinned at, but yourself as well.

Give it a try next time – smile at someone you pass by or just by yourself. You might just become a little happier.

Why is dealing with stress and anxiety when you travel so important?

At face value, it’s pretty obvious. No one wants to be stress or anxiety-ridden ever, let alone when you’re supposed to be traveling and experiencing new parts of the world.

But being stress-free when traveling has many benefits below the surface. You’ll be able to concentrate more on the memories and travel stories you create, and less time worrying about what can go wrong.

In the end, travel is supposed to be fun and teach us about a world that is diverse and unique. So focus on that and leave the possibilities of worst-case scenarios out of your constant thoughts.

Did you enjoy this post? I hope so! You can help spread the word about traveling stress-free on social media – just click the buttons to the left (or down the bottom if you’re a mobile user).

Hawai and a series of other US destinations are ideal for couples’ weekends , too.

The outdoorsy, thoughtful type would get the most from a visit to the Last Frontier.

In Alaska, the Stillpoint Lodge features a twenty-four-hour meditation space. You will have a great time with the scheduled or free-form meditation options.

With the way the lodge is set up, it works for groups or individuals.

There is no pressure to use a specific service, and spending most of your time in the organic garden isn’t uncommon. When visitors think of Alaska, the cold weather is the first thing on their minds.

It’s much more than that, with Stillpoint Lodge happily represented by the Kachemak Bay State Park. This is the only wilderness park in Alaska where you will find Halibut Cove.

You can explore the cold waters with an inflatable kayak and witness one-of-a-kind icebergs.

If the trip to the park seems a bit much, you can always take a scenic boat ride. You get the best weather possible when visiting Alaska during August and September.

This makes it a unique relaxation destination. Its sheer size and proximity to Mother Earth can remind you of the simple things in life and where you find the most happiness in yours.

Austin, Texas

Austin Texas Best Relaxing Destinations in USA austin-1402097_960_720

Travaasa is a paradise location located in Austin, TX, which is considered a great alternative to Hawaii. Making an itinerary filled with meditation, yoga, and relaxation doesn’t take long.

The spa services don’t get in the way of the location’s ambiance, as it seems to remain a thing on its own.

That’s important in more than one way and prevents frustration from dealing with ordinary ‘retreat’ bookings. Book at your convenience because there are no dedicated dates to lock in.

That makes Travaasa an excellent relaxation destination. The resort is only twenty minutes away from the city, so it works like a typical vacation.

You can always split time between relaxation and everyday activities in a pinch. More adventurous activities like canoeing are available, so Travaasa isn’t considered a one-trick pony.

Austin is a vibrant and bustling city full of unique attractions. If you’re planning to visit Austin , there are plenty of things to do while you’re in town.

Maine, New England

Maine is a very relaxed place on its own.

Maine - Best Relaxing Destinations in USA ocean-3833980_960_720

There exists the Rolling Meadows Retreat that adds to that by offering an intimate space that hosts up to eleven people.

This is an excellent choice for jobs that want to offer a retreat for workers in high-stress environments.

A social silence policy is in place once you’re settled and helps bridge the entire schedule.

There is yoga, free time, and encouragement to be more aware of your surroundings. Talking is permitted in guided sessions and, in total, can bring the entire experience circle.

A lot of the methods taught can be used in everyday life.

The instructors do an excellent job of making every minute count to your well-being. Visitors will find the retreat the best safe space after heavy testing, classes, and life stress.

Red Feather Lakes, Colorado

Shambhala is more than just a place to gather and clear your mind. Shambhala is a philosophy that speaks to those looking for peace in their life. Opposites can co-exist. By the way, Colorado is one of the top destinations for Spring Break for families .

As part of a six-hundred-acre retreat, the Shambhala Mountain Center is a great relaxation destination because it has diverse environments to meditate in.

Out of all the choices on the list, this one probably has the most programs available. No matter how many times you visit, there will always be something new to try.

Some popular programs are based on bestselling books or have a nature-based focus.

You can bring large groups of people and be assured that each person will have a different experience.

6 Tips To Relax On A Vacation

Tension flows seem to be an innate human characteristic. Numerous things in the world can lead to tension or stress, so it seems sensible to take a break from time to time. The following article discusses some of the best ways to relax on vacation.

1 . Travel with someone you know and love or

2. Travel single- A solo trip will allow you ample opportunities to meet new people, but there’s no one around for companionship when times get tough. If you’re traveling with your significant other, don’t forget about them while exploring the local nightlife! At least try not to.

3. Leave your cell phone – It can be difficult at first, but disconnecting from your cell phone can allow you a much-needed break. It’s hard to relax if you’re worried about work the entire time, and there are so many opportunities to have fun when technology is off – it’s excellent!

4. Limit your travel plan – There are so many attractions waiting to be explored when traveling; sometimes, without a solid plan, it’s easy for time to slip by. If you know what you want to see or do before leaving, try limiting yourself to maximize relaxation times.

5. Pack essentials only – After a long day of being on the go, it can feel good just relaxing in pajamas and a robe. By packing only necessities that provide comfort and relaxation, you don’t have to worry about anything besides sleeping and getting ready for the next day.

6. Take a yoga class – Yoga is arguably one of the best activities for your overall health, especially when practiced daily. Taking an occasional yoga class while on vacation can be extremely relaxing. If you’re not interested in joining an organized group, try it yourself! Google some “yoga poses” before leaving, and learn how to do each pose correctly. Once you arrive, take some time to relax by trying these poses in your hotel room or at the beach/park/local area with plenty of open space.

Colorado’s Most Charming Towns for a Summer Escape

Whether you’re looking to relax fireside under the stars at a luxury mountain resort or experience some of the best hiking in the Rockies, here’s where to explore in Colorado this summer.

d relax travel

Despite being one of the most popular skiing and snowboarding destinations in the country , Colorado provides a picturesque escape for travelers seeking a summer in the mountains . The pine-covered peaks, crystal clear lakes and charming villages come to life in the summer, allowing you to enjoy crisp mountain air and temperate weather. Though scattered thunderstorms are common throughout the warmest time of year, skies are predominantly sunny, allowing you to enjoy the great outdoors and all of Colorado’s adventurous activities.

From mountain biking to hiking, taking in the vibrant greenery and wild blooms in the summer is a stark but stunning contrast to the snow-covered landscape that draws so many visitors in the winter. While high-end towns like Aspen and Vail boast breathtaking surroundings and high-end restaurants and accommodations, smaller locales like Telluride offer a truly immersive and small-town mountain retreat. If you’re hoping to experience the more artsy side of Colorado, Cherry Creek is a special community in Denver that is home to unique art galleries and the Cherry Creek Arts Festival . Whether you’re looking to relax fireside under the stars at a luxury mountain resort or experience some of the best hiking in the Rockies, follow this guide to Colorado’s most charming towns for a summer escape.

d relax travel

Located at the base of Vail Mountain, this quaint valley town is surrounded by the White River National Forest, providing the perfect blend of rural and luxury living. Walk through glimmering Aspen trees on the Upper Piney River Falls trail or hike the Lost Lake Trail for epic views of Beaver Creek and the Gore Range vistas. On the weekends, indulge in French fare at Vintage before catching a concert at Vail’s Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater . Matsuhisa is the perfect place to cure your craving for sushi, but if you’re in the mood for a post-hike cocktail at sunset, grab a bar stool at Root & Flower and sip on the unique Cadillac Desert, which is a sage & citrus infused tequila martini.

Where to Stay:

The Four Seasons Resort and Residences Vail is just steps away from Vail Mountain, placing guests in the heart of nature. Enjoy unparalleled access to beautiful hiking and biking trails or take advantage of the heated pool and hot tubs. The Hythe Vail , a Luxury Collection property, offers more modern accommodations and encourages guests to unwind by the retro fireplace in the lobby or indulge in a massage at the on-site Well & Being Spa.

d relax travel

With a population of less than 3,000, Telluride is a box canyon town with a unique history. Formerly a Victorian mining town, the tiny destination has everything from towering peaks to a charming Main Street where locals go to shop, eat, drink and mingle. The surrounding San Juan Mountains are a hotspot for hikers and mountain bikers looking to brave treacherous yet idyllic peaks, but there are also plenty of lakes and ponds where you can swim or paddle board. The panoramic, mountainous background from Main Street is out of this world, but nothing beats the views from Allred’s Restaurant. Stop by Historic Bar for a nightcap at Telluride’s oldest bar, which has remained untouched since 1895.

Between the earthy interiors and show-stopping views, Auberge's Madeline Hotel & Residences offers a cozy respite from the outside world. The alpine-inspired rooms and suites boast five-star comfort, while the on-site Timber Room is home to one of the coolest cocktail programs in town. For more private accommodations, book one of the luxury log cabins at Mountain Lodge Telluride.

d relax travel

Cherry Creek

Though it is technically a neighborhood within Denver, Cherry Creek feels like its own destination entirely. In addition to its bustling shopping scene, it is also home to some of the best restaurants in Denver. Toro Latin Kitchen & Lounge is a Pan-Asian restaurant that serves innovative sushi rolls, Argentinian-style steaks, tasty tacos and more, while Blue Island Oyster Bar and Seafood serves some of the freshest seafood that you’ll find in this land-locked state. Art fanatics should pay a visit to Relévant Galleries , which showcases pieces by acclaimed photographer David Yarrow. If you visit during the first week of July, be sure to buy tickets to the Cherry Creek Arts Festival , which features over 250 juried artists.

Hotel Clio features 193 guest rooms and six suites. Enjoy a zesty margarita in the chic lobby before walking to some of the best shopping in the area, including boutiques and big brand-name stores. Halcyon, a Hotel in Cherry Creek is another solid option that boasts a hip rooftop pool and 154 contemporary rooms and suites.

d relax travel

Aspen is a quintessential Colorado town known for its celebrity residents, renowned restaurants and luxurious accommodations. Though there is plenty to do in downtown Aspen, from shopping designer handbags at Prada to visiting the Aspen Art Museum , the outdoor activities are what make Aspen such a hotspot for travelers. Experience the crystal clear waters at the Stillwater section of the Roaring Fork River, which is perfect for swimming and paddle boarding. When it comes to hiking, Maroon Bells Scenic Trail lets you soak in a scene of wildflowers around Alpine Lake. Not sure where to dine? Prospect , White House Tavern and Las Montañas should all be at the top of your list.

There’s no shortage of lavish hotels in Aspen, but in true Auberge fashion, Hotel Jerome is one of the best. This historic hotel is a local landmark and has been around since 1889, boasting vintage vibes and antique decor that creates an elevated and transportive ambiance. The Little Nell is another award-winning property that remains Aspen’s only Forbes Five-Star and Five-Diamond resort.

d relax travel

Colorado Springs

Trade in pine-covered mountains for red sandstone rocks when you visit Colorado Springs in the summer. The iconic Garden of the Gods is the most popular park in Colorado Springs, boasting more than 1,300 acres of public space. Nature lovers flock to this bucket-list sight every year, and though you can explore by foot at your leisure, you can also book a Jeep, Segway or e-bike tour. After a long day of hiking and adventuring, sit down for a dirty martini and shrimp cocktail at Bonny & Read Seafood before ending the night with stargazing.

Between its grandiose, European-inspired exterior and its five-star service, the Broadmoor is the most lavish property in Colorado Springs. The crystal chandeliers, antique paintings and marble fireplaces in the guest rooms and suites curate a setting that is reminiscent of a palace, but with an endless array of on-property amenities like a spa, golf course and indoor and outdoor pools, you probably won’t find yourself in your room all that often.

5 Ways to Survive a Long Layover

S pending 10+ hours in a congested airport doesn’t have to be a miserable time. In fact, some of the best travel experiences occur in the time between departing and boarding another flight. Whether you’re traveling across the country or between countries, chances are, a layover will pop up during your excursions, especially if you’re a frequent flier. Here’s a tried and true list to mitigate grueling wait times and enjoy your time on the ground between destinations.

A day spent in the airport doesn't have to be all bad.

1. Take a Day Trip

Whenever I try to book a flight from Florida to anywhere on the West Coast, an option pops up with an extended layover in the Denver airport. For some reason, the mighty flight scheduler decided a trip between Florida and California would benefit from a 27-hour layover in Colorado. This option usually falls on the cheaper side, though it costs the airline more fuel and resources to send me on two planes. I ponder it every time it pops up. Why not set out from the airport for an 18-hour excursion into a new place? Explore the novel location, try the local cuisine, and master a new skill in the narrow time frame.

2. relax in an airport lounge

Airport lounges supply fliers an area to work, relax, and, in many cases, eat and drink. Activating lounge access varies between passengers. Some individuals tap into credit card benefits for lounge access, while others find it with their ticket purchase, depending on their seating arrangements. Globetrotters can purchase day passes for nominal fees, those with elite airline status can enter the lounge, and military members get in for free.

Every lounge has different rules for entry so if this is something you plan to do, check the requirements ahead of time.

3. Exercise

Several airports have designated workout areas like gyms or yoga rooms that allow travelers to clear their headspace and get their sweat on. One airport with a gym inside an airport hotel is Chicago O’Hare, and granted, it’s one of the busiest and most stressful airports, a place to unwind aids jet setters. Across from terminal 2 stands the Hilton Airport Hotel, equipped with a gym—a pool, a sauna, weight machines, treadmills, and ellipticals—and a yoga room for elongating yin.

Miami International Airport lends customers a miniature gym inside the airport and a lounge on top of the Airport’s Marriott hotel with an overhead shade of the state’s native palm trees.

Other international locations stocked with fitness centers or yoga rooms include San Francisco International Airport (Yoga Room), London Heathrow Airport (gym and pool), and Dubai International Airport (gym, steam room, and sauna). Can’t find a gym in your layover airport? Go for a couple of laps through the terminals to increase your heart rate and endorphins before remaining stationary for several hours.

4. Check Out the Dining Options

Say you’re trekking from the U.S. to London. Last year, my friend and I boarded a flight from Boston to London, yet our layover took us to the land of fire and ice for a six-hour layover. We didn’t have enough time to venture out into Reykjavik or dip into the Blue Lagoon, so we strolled through the Keflavik airport, searching for local cuisine.

We touched down in Iceland around 2 a.m. their time, meaning our dining options dwindled from staple Icelandic dishes ranging from lava-infused pizza and fish and chips to mere portions of skyr and slabs of haddock in vacuum-sealed plastic. We opted for the skyr and stumbled upon some local Icelandic cheese and the cleanest water we’ve ever tasted.

Always peruse airport restaurants for unique local cuisine and staple meals.

5. Relax and pamper

Many airports offer massage or spa treatments. In the Amsterdam Schipol airport, I deposited a couple of euros into a massage machine and enjoyed a relaxing mechanical massage before a lengthy flight. A popular airport spa chain, found in four countries with numerous locations worldwide, is Xpres Spa. The relaxation station provides comfort for all levels of interest and time slots.

Only have 15 minutes? That’s okay; check out a 15-minute in-depth foot massage targeting built-up tension. If you have a longer layover, peruse the touchless massage options featuring zero-gravity, or robotic massage chairs divvied up between 30-minute, 20-minute, and shorter 15-minute sessions.

Other services include 45-minute chakra bed treatments to realign your seven chakras, LED mask massages, brightening and tightening your tired, travel-affected skin, virtual reality massages, and hydro massages. Not a fan of massage? Flip through the manicure and pedicure options. (Xpres Spa also offers robotic manicures for those hoping to avoid human interaction).

George Stephanopoulos and some of his favorite Hamptons things.

Viewers are used to seeing George Stephanopoulos in a suit and tie on ABC’s “Good Morning America” and “This Week,” but even the former senior adviser to President Bill Clinton sometimes trades his wingtips for docksiders.

He and his wife — actress-comedian-author Ali Wentworth, 59 — have been summering in the Hamptons for 22 years now. They’ve owned homes in East Hampton, Amagansett, Southampton and, now, Sagaponack.

“We just can’t wait to get out there!” Stephanopoulos, 63, tells Alexa. “The whole family loves the Hamptons [including daughters Elliott, 21, and Harper, 18]. It is our home away from home and always our favorite place to go when we have time off.”

Tonight, the anchor gets to mix work with pleasure when he appears at Long Island LitFest in Melville to discuss his latest book, “The Situation Room: The Inside Story of Presidents in Crisis.”

“No one had done a comprehensive history of the White House Situation Room, which is really the nerve center of the White House,” explains Stephanopoulos. “So I did! This book is such an interesting window into how every president since John F. Kennedy, who created the Situation Room, has dealt with the crises of our times.”

His book includes watershed moments in “the room where it happened,” ranging from the shootings of presidents Kennedy and Ronald Reagan to the 9/11 attacks, the hours leading up to the Osama bin Laden raid and the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. If you can’t make it to LitFest for his Q&A today, you might just run into Stephanopoulos at one of these Hamptons haunts.

B ridgehampton Candy Kitchen | 2391 Montauk Highway, Bridgehampton

A cup of ice cream with chocolate sauce and a cherry on top on a blue paper texture background

“I have to support my Greeks! [The Candy Kitchen has been around for 100 years and is currently owned by Gus Laggis and was owned by George Stavropoulos before him.] Their homemade chocolate chip ice cream is my favorite!”

The 1770 House | 143 Main St., East Hampton

A martini glass with olives on a stick against a blue paper texture background

“The perfect place for a nightcap is 1770 House, because it’s within walking distance of our house. But with my early- morning schedule, a nightcap could be at 7 p.m.! The tavern downstairs is such a beautiful, cozy spot, and they make an excellent martini.”

L obster Roll (AKA “Lunch”) | 1980 Montauk Highway, Amagansett

A lobster roll on a blue paper texture background

“We’ve been going to this seafood shack for over 20 years, and it’s still just as incredible. The whole family has their usual orders: The girls get the lobster rolls — what they are most famous for — but I go for the little puffer fish, fried scallops or clams. You can’t go wrong there.”

Bookhampton | 41 Main St., East Hampton

Stack of books on a textured blue paper background

“Every time I go out to East Hampton, I buy a book here. The last one was ‘Her First American’ by Lore Segal. I enjoyed it.”

Amber Waves Farm & Market | 367 Main St., Amagansett

A basket of peaches on a blue paper texture background

“We stay in and cook more than we go out when we are in the Hamptons, and we’ll always pull over at this farm stand to pick up whatever looks good that day. But we’re usually grilling corn, and we’ll even get peaches to grill for dessert with vanilla ice cream. And we always have a big bowl of watermelon in our fridge.”

F airway Restaurant at Poxabogue Golf Course | 3556 Montauk Highway, Sagaponack

A plate of scrambled eggs on a blue paper texture background

“It’s nice to hit a few balls at the range and then get some breakfast. I order your standard scrambled eggs and toast. I’ve been going here for years. It’s such a classic spot.”

G ibson Beach | 239 Gibson Lane, Sagaponack

A bicycle parked on a dirt road with a wooden gate and a body of water on a blue paper texture background

“All the beaches in the Hamptons are fantastic, but I like this one the most because it’s never crowded, and you can walk forever just staring out into the water, feeling like you are miles away from everything else.”

Carvel | 2033 Montauk Highway, Bridgehampton

Soft serve ice cream cone on a blue textured paper background

“My girls love going to Carvel. I order the vanilla soft-serve dipped in cherry. We also ordered their Fudgie the Whale cakes during COVID. That was our COVID treat.”

Guild Hall | 158 Main St., East Hampton

Blue paper texture background overlaying a white building with a table and chairs

“It’s the place to get some culture. Ali and I saw an amazing production of ‘Equus’ here years ago, and we saw Sandra Bernhard’s comedy show. We’ve known her for a long time, so it’s always fun to go out and see your friends perform.”

Montauk Point Lighthouse Cliff Walk | 2000 Montauk Highway, Montauk

A lighthouse on a hill with Montauk Point Light in the background

“For the best view in the Hamptons, there’s nothing like the very tip out in Montauk, taking a hike right along the cliffs, and looking down at the ocean from high up. It’s beautiful, and you feel so far, far away from everything — especially New York City.”

E ast Hampton Duck Pond | 96 Davids Lane, East Hampton

Two ducks walking on a blue textured paper path

“I have the fondest memories of taking my girls here when they were little to see the ducks. My youngest daughter loved them, but my oldest was scared of them. It was a special place for us then and still is.”
