Top 10 Gozo Day Trips, Tours and Excursions to Take

Taking a day trip to Gozo during your holiday in Malta is a great idea. Malta’s sister island is a haven for anyone wishing to experience a more rural setting and a quieter, more laid-back way of living in the Maltese islands. Moreover, there are fun options available when it comes to Gozo tours and excursions.

It’s also super easy to get to Gozo: it is just a short 25-minute ferry ride away from the mainland. There are several organised and guided tours that will help you make the best of your time in Gozo, with some even offering direct transfers to Gozo from various locations in Malta.

In this article, I’ll give you my best recommendations for the best Gozo day trips, tours and excursions on offer.

If you’re prepared to undertake the journey to Gozo by yourself, you can find all the details here: How to catch the Gozo ferry.

Gozo Tuk Tuk

Tuk Tuks are cute little carriages-turned-cars and are a great way to explore Gozo. Plus, you can’t go wrong exploring unique locations on the island in a colourful, three-wheeled vehicle!

This full-day tour takes you around the beautiful hills, valleys, and beaches of Gozo, while also showing you stunning architecture, churches, and historical sites. You’ll get the chance to explore up to sixteen beautiful and unique sights on the island, guided by a multilingual driver.

Better yet, you’ll return to Malta from Gozo by boat, passing by Comino and stopping at the beautiful Crystal Lagoon for a swim, if the weather permits it.

A great alternative way to experience Gozo is by taking a  Quad bike tour  (which you drive yourself, guided by a knowledgeable lead driver) around different sites and locations. You’ll get to see rarely-visited spots, and you can take in your beautiful surroundings at your own pace.

This tour allows a driver and up to one passenger to drive around Gozo on Quad bike, which includes all the best, must-see spots. You get to places regular vehicles can’t and get some offroading adventure in!

You get a safety briefing by a safety officer, who will lead the tour after the briefing. If you’re staying in Malta, you’ll be transferred to the Gozo Channel ferry in Ċirkewwa and returned to Malta via motorboat (passing by the Blue Lagoon Malta in Comino).

Lunch, fuel, and time for a swimming stop are also included in the tour.

Please note that drivers must be over 21 years of age and holders of a valid driving license. Furthermore, children aged 12 or under aren’t legally allowed to ride a Go-Car. TIP: Use coupon  malta5  and get 5% off!

The best Gozo boat tours and day trips from Malta

Boat tours to gozo from buġibba.

If you’re staying in Buġibba or close to Buġibba (for example, Qawra, Mellieħa, Xemxija, or St. Paul’s Bay), this Blue Lagoon/Gozo combo tour is a great way for you to get to see Gozo and Comino (and its Blue Lagoon) on the same day. There are two options:

  • Taking the larger catamaran with underwater windows, ladders and slides
  • Taking the smaller Sea Odyssey boat, which is also a great choice (and a little quieter)

Both boats have jumping platforms, sun loungers, changing areas, separate toilets, a bar, and even air-conditioning to cool down when needed.

You’ll see Malta’s beautiful coastline up close, with a stopover at the Blue Lagoon for some fun in the sea and sun. Then, you’ll travel to Gozo (Mgarr Harbour), where you can spend around three hours exploring and enjoying this stunning island before heading back to Bugibba.

In Gozo, you can:

  • Make your own way to a few places by taxi or hop-on/hop-off bus
  • Take organised transport to either Victoria (the main town in the centre of Gozo) or Xlendi (a picturesque bay in the South of Gozo flanked by tall cliffs).

As a side note, do remember that while the Catamaran is wheelchair accessible, Comino itself is not, so this may be an issue for some visitors. Also, a multilingual audio guide is available.

Time: Approx. 7 hours

Boat tours to Gozo from Sliema

If your accommodation is in Sliema or close-by, this round-trip cruise is a great way to make the most of the different lagoons, bays, and natural sights in Gozo while enjoying the refreshing sea breeze.

You’ll set off from Sliema and depart for this fun cruise around Gozo’s coastline. The tour will take you by Valletta, Sliema, St. Julian’s, St. Paul’s Bay and St. Paul’s Islands, Mellieħa Bay, and eventually moor at one of the secluded bays in Gozo. Here, you will enjoy time eating delicious food, sunbathing, diving, and swimming.

Following lunch, you’ll be taken to the small island of Comino. Here, you’ll anchor at the famous Blue Lagoon, where you’ll be free to relax and swim some more against the backdrop of stunning azure waters. Refresh yourself with some fresh fruit before leaving the bay and heading back to the main island.

On the boat, you’ll be provided with a morning snack, lunch, drinks, fresh fruit, and also have the availability of using the toilets and showers on board.

You can choose to be taken back to your accommodation in Malta. If you choose to get a transfer, you can book one ahead of time for a fee. A buffet with drinks is available on board, while the price also includes a cave tour by powerboat.

Price per person: €55 for the whole day for adults, with children 12 and under at €35. Fee for accommodation transfer is €6.

Time: Approx. 8 hours

Alternatively, you can take a day trip tour starting from Sliema and going Eastwards past Comino to Gozo. The trip will circle around the sister island and anchor at the Blue Lagoon for a day of beautiful sites, sun, and swimming. On the way you’ll see the beautiful Maltese and Gozitan coastlines, pass by Dwejra Bay and the famous Fungus Rock, and experience the beauty of the salt pans in Marsalforn. You’ll also pass through the popular bay with red sand, known as Ramla Bay (possibly stopping for a swim if the weather conditions allow it), and marvel at the natural awe of the imposing Ta’ Ċenċ cliffs.

Finally, the boat will drop anchor at the Blue Lagoon in Comino, where you’ll be able to enjoy the rest of your day swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the crystal clear waters.

You’ll be provided with drinks and lunch and have use of the onboard toilet and shower facilities. Furthermore, if you want to get transfer to your accommodation, you can do so by booking in advance and at an extra small fee.

Price per person: €55 for the whole day for adults, with children between 4-12 at €40. Fee for accommodation transfer is €6.

Time: Approx. 7.5 hours

Boat tours to Gozo from St. Julian’s

If you’re staying in St. Julian’s, the situation is similar to that in Valletta. However, there is no ferry to and from St. Julian’s so you will have to opt either for public buses, a taxi ride or a long (30-40 min) walk.

Most boat tours that depart at Sliema will also offer a transfer option at an additional charge, which is convenient.

To catch a bus, routes 13, 13A, 14, 16, or 22 will take you to Sliema.

On the other hand, you can also choose to make your way to the Gozo ferry in Ċirkewwa either via taxi, or by taking a bus. You’ll need to look out for bus route 222.

Boat tours to Gozo from Valletta

The nearest departure point for boat tours to Gozo from Valletta is by travelling to Sliema. You can get there easily by taking a taxi, the ferry from Valletta to Sliema, or by taking the bus.

The bus is very easy to catch from Valletta, as this is the hub of the main terminus where all buses to towns and villages around Malta leave from. You’ll need to catch bus routes 13, 13A, 14, 15, 16, 21 or 22.

On the other hand, taking the ferry from Valletta to Sliema is the better way to go as you avoid going through all the different localities and stopping at different bus stops. You can do this by going to the West-facing (Marsamxett) Harbourside of Valletta (look for Boat Street on Google Maps for exact location), where the ferry to Sliema moors. Bus 133 takes you directly at this location if you stop at ‘Mandraġġ’ bus stop.

The ferry will directly take you from one harbour in Valletta to the opposite side at the spot known as Sliema Ferries. This is ideal, as you can hop on a boat tour to Gozo from the same place.

Alternatively, you can choose to catch a bus from Valletta directly to the Gozo ferry in Ċirkewwa. Once you’re in Gozo, you can hop on a tour from the harbour in Mġarr. Apart from taking a taxi from Valletta to Ċirkewwa, you can catch the bus from the main bus terminus in Valletta. Buses 41 and 42 will take you to your destination.

This boat trip from Malta to Gozo is perfect for people who only have a short time in Malta and want to experience the Blue Lagoon and also visit the main sites on the Island of Gozo.

Full Description

This day trip to Gozo and Comino starts from the tourist town of Bugibba, where the modern and stable catamaran Sea Adventure departs on an unforgettable two island cruise.

From the open sea, you will experience Malta from a truly unique and beautiful vantage point. We cruise close to the coast, witnessing Malta’s magnificent naturally formed coastline, including its enormous cliffs, rocky nooks, and crannies. You will pass the tiny Island of St. Paul’s, viewing the apostle Saint Paul’s statue, rising high into the sky. You will visit magnificent sea caves, allowing you the opportunity to take amazing photographs.

Blue Lagoon

Our first stop on this day trip to Gozo and Comino is the Blue Lagoon on the island of Comino. During high season we depart earlier to arrive at the famous Blue Lagoon before it starts to get busy. We moor for an hour right next to the Blue Lagoon; you will have the best view from our docking position. Use the boat as a base, utilising all the fantastic facilities.

Victoria, Gozo

The land transport will take you to the fabulous capital city of Gozo called Victoria. It is named after the Queen of England but is more commonly referred to as Rabat by the locals. This small city has a wealth of charm and history to explore, and the first known settlers date back to the Neolithic times.

The crown jewel of Victoria is the Citadel, which rises high above the city’s narrow winding streets. This impressive structure was granted UNESCO world heritage site in 2016. Take a walk around this fantastic fortress and visit several of its fascinating small museums and a state of the art Visitors’ Centre: The Cathedral Museum, the Museum of Archaeology, the Folklore Museum, the Gozo Nature Museum, the Old Prison, the Old Gunpowder Magazine, the Grain Silos, the Battery and the World War II Shelter.

Nestle through the small alleyways of Victoria to the bustling St Georges Square, here you can eat or relax in one of the restaurant’s or visit the imposing baroque Basilica situated there.

Crystal lagoon

Lastly, during high season we stop for one hour at the stunning but less well known Crystal Lagoon. It is surrounded by cliffs and therefore only accessible by boats. With unbelievably clear water, it is perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and diving. Take a plunge into its crystal clear waters from one of our three waterslides, or jump from the top deck if you dare! A true snorkelers paradise, where you can even swim inside the caves.

With the day drawing to a close, we cruise back to Bugibba, but not before entering the Santa Maria pirate caves and viewing the “Elephants Head”, an incredible rock formation.

There is onboard commentary in English, French, German, Italian & Polish.

Introducing the best gozo and blue lagoon tour….

Day trips are the perfect way to see and experience more of the world when you’re short on time, and Malta is no different! Malta’s sister islands of Comino and Gozo are must-sees on your itinerary for Malta , given their outstanding natural beauty and Mediterranean charm! Comino is Malta’s third largest island, and is home to the famous Blue Lagoon which is one of the most unique places to visit in Europe . Gozo i s the second largest island in the Maltese archipelago, and is a charming place with a jagged coastline, green countryside and beautiful cities and villages ! And if you’re looking for a recommendation for the best day trip to Gozo and Comino from Malta , then here it is…

Cathedral of Assumption, Gozo - A day trip to Gozo and Comino from Malta with Sea Adventure Excursions

Note : Sea Adventure Excursions offer different options for boat trips to Gozo and Comino. You can visit both islands, or miss Gozo and stay at Comino’s Blue Lagoon for longer. I highly recommend doing the Gozo and Comino boat tour to get a taste of both of Malta’s sister islands! You can find information on how to book a trip at the end of this post.

Who are Sea Adventure Excursions?

When I visited Malta, I opted to book a one day trip to Comino and Gozo with Sea Adventure Excursions after reading good reviews for the company on TripAdvisor. Sea Adventure Excursions offer a range of different Malta sightseeing boat tours on their catamaran, Sea Adventure! What makes Sea Adventure that little bit special (and the reason I booked to go with them) is that they have 3 water-slides and an underwater viewing area . Along with this, they have all the standard amenities, like sundecks, sun loungers, toilets, and a bar.

Tip : Food and drinks are not included in the price of a boat trip. You can take your own supplies aboard, dine in Gozo or Xlendi, or purchase snacks on board the catamaran.

Where does the boat trip depart from?

Sea Adventure departs from the tourist town of Bugibba located on the northeast coast of Malta. It’s a stone’s throw away from Qawra and St Paul’s Bay, and a short drive from other well known hotspots like Sliema, St Julians and Valletta. Transfers to/from the departure port in Bugibba are not included in the price of the boat trip, so you’ll need to factor this into the cost if you’re not staying in Bugibba. You can book these through Sea Adventure Excursions for an additional fee, or make your own arrangements. Personally, I booked my transfers through Sea Adventure Excursions as I stayed in St Julians.

Mgarr Harbour Gozo Channel Line Ferry - A day trip to Gozo and Comino from Malta with Sea Adventure Excursions

Itinerary for day trip to Gozo and Comino from Malta

Stop 1: comino island and the blue lagoon.

Departing from the town of Bugibba in the morning and bound for Comino Island, you’ll cruise alongside Malta’s dramatic rocky coastline with its impressive cliffs and geological features. As you sail across the water, be sure to look out for the Statue of St Paul on St Paul’s Island which marks where St Paul became shipwrecked in around 60AD. With all the wonderful scenery around you, you’ll arrive at Comino Island in no time, which is the first stop on your Comino-Gozo day trip!

Comino Island is home to the world-renowned Blue Lagoon which is one of the natural wonders of Europe and is where you’ll dock . It is located off the north coast of Malta and is the third largest of the Maltese archipelago! Located in between Malta and Gozo, the Blue Lagoon is most famous for its azure waters. You’ll have around 1 hour here (around 4 hours if you opt to do the day trip to Comino from Malta not including Gozo) to explore the island and swim in the crystal clear waters!

Tip: Take your own towels with you if you plan on swimming in the Blue Lagoon. And even if you don’t, take them anyway because you might not be able to resist the allure of the aqua blue waters! Oh, and don’t forget your swimwear!

If you opt to take a wander of Comino Island, you’ll find that it is a mostly uninhabited 3.5 square kilometre island, with a population of herbs and flowers and one hotel. But seeing as you only have 1 hour, you’ll probably want to spend most of your time enjoying the Blue Lagoon and boat facilities, especially the slides and underwater windows due to the abundance of marine wildlife! (note: I went in November so it was very quiet on Comino and at the Blue Lagoon but I’ve heard it can be a pretty crowded place in peak months, so just be mindful of that)

Tip: There are rentable lockers aboard the ship to store your valuables in, so you don’t need to worry about them being left unattended whilst you unleash your inner child on the slides!

Blue Lagoon at Comino - A day trip to Gozo and Comino from Malta with Sea Adventure Excursions

Stop 2: Victoria (Gozo)

Once your hour’s up at the Blue Lagoon, it’s time to board the catamaran bound for Gozo which is just a short stretch away. Gozo is located northwest of Comino and is Malta’s second largest sister island. You will have 3 hours in Gozo and will arrive at Mgarr Harbour. From here you have the option to go off and explore solo, or to utilise the land transport offered by Sea Adventure Excursions for an additional small fee to help you to see the island.

Tip: I paid the extra charge for land transport on my day trip to Gozo. I’d recommend you do this for ease and to maximise your sightseeing time. You’ll jump aboard a minibus and be ferried up to Victoria before heading across to the coastal village of Xlendi.

The Citadel, Gozo

Victoria (known locally as Ir-Rabat) is the capital city of Gozo , and if you ever have a little more time would make for one of the best summer city break destinations in Europe . Taking centre stage of Victoria is the UNESCO World Heritage Citadel. The Citadel is an ancient fortification which has served as refuge from attacks over the years, and hidden within its walls is a whole other world of quaint lanes, museums, and cathedrals. One of the best things to do in Victoria is to wander the Citadel , and be sure not to miss the sweeping countryside views from the top of its high walls.

But Victoria is more than the iconic Citadel, and is home to a network of charming streets and sociable squares below its fort. St George’s Square is one of the most famous squares in Victoria to visit, and is lined with many bistros and bars. But if you want a quiet spot to enjoy a frothy coffee and a slice of cake, then head to Rizzles Cafe and Dolceria at St Francis Square before heading back to the bus stop!

St Francis Square in Victoria (Ir-Rabat), Gozo

Stop 3: Xlendi (Gozo)

If you’ve paid the additional charge for land transportation, after visiting Victoria you’ll be driven to a charming seaside village called Xlendi . Now admittedly, I did this trip in November so it was a little chilly and the waves in the cove were quite fierce, but this did not take away from how stunning it was. Xlendi is a quaint little place hemmed in by large cliffs either side, and is the ideal place for a spot of lunch with fantastic ocean views!

Stop 4: The Crystal Lagoon

Once your time has come to an end in Xlendi, you’ll be transported back to Mgarr Harbour to board Sea Adventure once again. As you head back towards Malta nearing the end of your Gozo and Comino tour, you’ll stop off at the Crystal Lagoon for around 1 hour , for swimming, snorkelling, and sliding (note: the boat only stops at the Crystal Lagoon if the weather permits and does not stop here from October-May)! After the Crystal Lagoon, you will sail back to Bugibba and if you’re lucky will be able to watch the sunset over Malta island!

Summary of day trip to Gozo and Comino from Malta

The only down-side I can possibly identify from this day trip to Gozo and the Blue Lagoon is that it was a little chilly, but this is completely beyond the control of Sea Adventure Excursions and is due to the fact that I went in November! So if you’re looking to explore the two islands that neighbour Malta and want to take a day tour for ease because you’re short on time, I would highly recommend Sea Adventure Excursions . I felt like I had enough time to get acquainted with each destination, the boat had fantastic amenities, it was well organised and was good value for money! I certainly plan to do it again on my next trip to Malta…

Tip: If you’re doing this Comino and Gozo day trip from Malta between October and May, it’s advisable to take a light jacket or jumper with you because the sea breeze can be crisp!

Taking The Malta to Gozo Ferry Was A Fun Experience!

Do you want to explore the island of Gozo from Malta but aren’t sure about the ferry ride? Taking the ferry to Gozo from Malta is easy – this makes the smaller island very accessible for visitors to Malta (and serves to connect locals between the two islands all-year-round)!

Eric took the ferry from Malta to Gozo (and back) when he visited Malta with a few friends on a previous trip. Even though the ride was short, it’s a scenic little adventure across the beautiful blue channel and was a highlight of his trip to Malta. Oh, and exploring Gozo was pretty great, too!

So, whether you are wondering where the ferry terminal in Mġarr is or whether the ferry is running during your visit, this guide covers what to expect when you take the ferry to Gozo and details like the ferry prices, the timetables for summer and winter, and other need-to-knows!

Since you are likely visiting Malta and looking to explore more, you should have a look at some of our other Malta and Gozo posts!

How to Take the Ferry from Malta to Gozo

Some ferry crossings can be confusing while others can be very straightforward. We’ve done ferries from Dublin to Liverpool, across a bay in Montenegro, and gone from Tallinn to Helsinki . The ferry from Malta to Gozo is definitely on the easier end of the travel spectrum!

Gozo Ferry Companies

There is only one ferry company that runs the route between the main island of Malta and Gozo. That company is Gozo Channel . They have four ships that make the crossing multiple times per day and frankly they do a great job.

Gozo Ferry Ticket Booking

To get tickets for the Gozo ferry, it’s going to feel strange but it’s fine: you just get on the ferry in Malta without paying. Then when you want to come back to Malta from Gozo, you pay for your ferry ticket at the ferry terminal on Gozo .

You do not/cannot buy the tickets for the Gozo ferry online.

Tickets can only be purchased in-person at that ferry terminal so there is no fancy website to book through with various prices. There’s one company, one price, and lots of ferry time slots to take so the process is very streamlined.

Malta to Gozo Ferry Timetables

The ferry Malta to Gozo only takes about 25 minutes and there are multiple crossings both ways per day. You can find the exact, up-to-date Gozo ferry schedule at the official website . It even tells you when the next departure is for each side!

Often there are multiple ferries per hour and there are even some that run during the night. With the exception of some holidays, the ferries basically run the whole year. Some ferry times – like Sunday night back to Malta – are busier. But then you could always opt for another ferry that day. There is also a summer timetable and a winter timetable which have a slightly different ferry frequency.

You can also download the Gozo Channel app which provides you with a timetable, any important updates, and more! This is handy if you’re planning your trip on the fly and need to look up the timetable while on the road.

Malta to Gozo Ferry Ticket Costs

The cost of the ferry journey from Malta to Gozo is very affordable given that the crossing is short. The “Standard Passenger Fare” is €4.65 at the time of writing. This is for a typical adult traveller who is foot traffic only (as in you have no car with you). There are other fares for residents of Gozo, kids, and a few other categories.

In case you were wondering, for those travelling with a car, the “Car and Driver Standard Fare” is €15.70. There are also different fares if you have a motorcycle, a bicycle, trailer, and other vehicle types. For a full breakdown, here is the official website for Gozo ferry fares .

Other Ferry Travel Considerations

Before you prepare for the ferry journey, there are a few other details that you should consider.

  • Safety: The boats are equipped with more than enough lifejackets for everyone – a max of 900 people – as well as an AED, fire extinguishers, and inflatable evacuation slides and rafts.
  • Cars: You MUST leave your car during the voyage and go to the passenger deck. You can return to it when you get to Gozo to drive away.
  • Motorbikes : You need to secure it as per their instructions – but you should know what you are doing. If you’ve never rented something with two wheels before and you’re just taking it on the ferry, be extra careful so you don’t hurt yourself, the bike, or others.
  • Accessibility: Three of the ships have a lift: Malita, Ta Pinu, and Gaudos while a chair lift is available on the Nikolaos. There is also a priority lane at each terminal to assist people with disabilities.
  • Pets: Pets need a ticket and they must be on a leash at all times. They aren’t allowed in the food areas and on any chairs/benches etc.
  • Cargo or Dangerous Goods: This is more for locals but as a traveller it’s good to know that there are separate ferry times for carrying large cargo and/or goods that are listed as dangerous (explosive, etc).

Our Experience on the Gozo Ferry

front of ferry boat with land and clouds ahead malta to gozo ferry

  • Ferry Company:  Gozo Channel
  • Journey Time: 25 minutes
  • Cost:  Standard Passenger Fare €4.65 (at time of writing)
  • Tickets Bought:  Tickets are bought IN-PERSON ON GOZO when you return to Malta

Overall, we had a great experience taking the ferry from Malta to Gozo. To tell you a little more about our experience: We caught the ferry to Gozo in the morning and came back later the same day during sunset. Below is a more detailed account of the whole experience. Generally speaking, it’s very straightforward.

Leaving Malta for Gozo

If you’ve decided to take the ferry to Gozo, you need to first get yourself to the ferry terminal on Malta. The ferry terminal is located at the northernmost end of the main island of Malta close to Paradise Bay Resort .

Location of Ċirkewwa Passenger Terminal : Located at the north end of the island of Malta in Ċirkewwa.

If you are staying in Sliema, Valletta, or a number of other cities/towns on the island, you will need to head north. There are a number of ways to get to the Ċirkewwa Ferry Terminal.

You can drive there from the south end of the island in about 45 minutes. There is parking available at the terminal if you aren’t taking the car to Gozo. If you are taking the car, just follow the signs into the vehicle waiting area and await instructions to drive onto the next ferry.

You can also take the bus to the Ferry Terminal. This is what we did from the Sliema area. The following bus routes can get you to the Ferry Terminal in Ċirkewwa: 41, 42, 101, 221, 222, N11, X1, X1A, X1B. You can learn more about bus routes and timetables at the official website for Malta Transport . The bus system is very good in Malta so use them!

If you are coming right from the airport, you can hop on a bus (mentioned above), hop in a rental car , or hop in a cab for a ride that is around 30 Euro – but make sure you account for traffic and getting across the island if you are trying to catch a specific ferry to Gozo.

Once you arrive at the terminal, it’s honestly pretty straightforward. Since you don’t have to buy a ticket, you basically just hang out in the large seating area. There’s a little cafe in the terminal for coffee and little sweets. They announce which ferry is boarding and when the time comes, simply follow the signs/crowds into the ferry.

Once on-board, there is seating inside and out so choose what works best for you and get comfortable. We opted to stand out in the sunshine to see as much as we could. This would prove to be a great idea.

Ferry Ride to Gozo

Once everyone and the cars were on board, off we went! The short ride was largely uneventful – which is what you want from a ferry ride across the open ocean. It was very smooth and people were both inside looking out the windows as well as up on the upper deck taking in the views.

They actually cancel the ferries if the seas are too rough but usually it’s easy-going through this channel. Eric also didn’t visit Malta in the high summer season – but we can imagine the ferry and terminal being a little more hectic and busy during that time. Honestly though, it’s such a straightforward process and an enjoyable ride.

If you want to stand outside (like we did) you might want a sweater or jacket because the wind on the water can make things very chilly even if the sun is shining brightly. In fact, this can be more dangerous because you don’t feel how much your skin is burning when the cold wind is on it!

small tower on rocky cliff overlooking blue ocean channel from malta ferry

In terms of things to know: The boats have free wifi on board and there’s also a small cafe that does light food/snacks and drinks. Good to grab a coffee (or beer, more on this later) if you are in a pinch. That said, you can wait until Mġarr harbour for the little seaside cafes/restaurants/bars for lunch.

As you cross, you also get great views of the island of Comino, the third-largest island that makes up the country of Malta. There is a separate ferry company ( Comino Ferries ) and the island has a few attractions like the Blue Lagoon which you might want to check out.

Arriving on Gozo

fishing boats in harbour with cliffs behind in mgarr gozo

After about 20 minutes, it’s time to get ready to get off. You see the island of Gozo coming closer and it can be a little exciting. The first thing you see is the little harbour full of boats – this is Mġarr Harbour. You also might notice a church up on the hill – this is the Church of the Madonna of Lourdes.

You can read up on > You can read up on things to do in Gozo here (opens in a new tab)” href=”https://www.penguinandpia.com/en/things-to-do-in-gozo/” target=”_blank”>things to do in Gozo here

The boat docks pretty quickly and then you can get moving again. The terminal is quite small and you follow the signs to quickly exit the terminal basically looking across into the little harbour. In the terminal, there are a number of kiosks for tours and other things.

Address of Gozo Ferry Terminal: Mġarr Harbour, Mġarr, Gozo

If you brought the car, you can drive your car off the ferry (obviously). If you are on foot, you can hop in a cab (which are waiting right in front of you exiting the terminal), rent a car right on the spot in Gozo , or catch the Malta Public Transport bus.

The bus is good because any Malta day tickets you might have work on these buses on Gozo, too. The 301 Bus and the 323 Bus take you directly from the Ferry Terminal (stop called Vapur) to the capital city of Victoria (the main bus terminal, it’s obvious). The 303 will also get you to Victoria but in a more roundabout way.

Just so you know, you can also buy a ticket for the hop on the hop-on, hop-off sightseeing bus . Sounds silly, but you can then use it as both a way to get around the island while you are there (as it has multiple stops and buses running the same route) and as a great way to learn about the sights to check out.

Boarding on Gozo Back to Malta

Once you are done in Gozo – for us it was a very long but awesome day – you can basically do the whole thing in reverse. You need to first head from wherever you are on Gozo to the Gozo Ferry Terminal back at the harbour.

One thing you need to know is that if you are travelling on Sunday or a holiday, the ferries get very busy because locals make their way to Gozo for the weekend and all come back on Sunday. The traffic to even get to the harbour can be backed up significantly so if you have a ferry time in mind after 2:00 pm on Sunday leave yourself lots of time!

If you are in a car, just follow the signs to line up for getting back on the ferry much like you did heading for Gozo. If you are on foot, just head back into the small ferry terminal. This time you will buy your ticket to head back to Malta. You need it to go through a set of gates so you can’t get on without a ticket in Gozo.

Just so you know, you can go and purchase pre-paid return tickets at any time – it doesn’t have to be right before your return ferry trip (but it usually is for most travellers). This can be done at the Mġarr Harbour/Gozo Ferry Terminal when the office is open.

Arriving Back on Malta

sunset over the back of a ferry crossing from gozo

The ride back is much the same as when you go – except people are usually more tired because they have been in the sun all day or have been exploring.

Eric’s ride back was very memorable. This is because of the amazing sunset he was treated to and the circumstances of the ride. Eric and his friends brought a beer on-board and had a “cheers” to a great day on Gozo. They cleaned up their bottles and drank responsibly so it was a great way to end off a fantastic day – beers on the top deck!

Once back in Ċirkewwa everyone on foot got off pretty quickly while the cars got off as well. Eric then headed for the buses again at the large bus stop area outside the terminal.

Depending on where you are staying, there are lots or fewer buses you can catch to get back to the south end of the island. Usually, they are frequent so it’s not a huge deal if they fill up. If you took the car, then off you go again to where you are staying!

And there you have it – our experience taking the ferry from Malta to Gozo and back! Taking the ferry is very easy if you know what to expect. Just follow the signs, leave yourself time, and be sure to enjoy the views from the ferry when you cross. Above all, enjoy Malta – it’s a fantastic little country of more than just sunshine.

As always, Happy Gozo Ferry Waddlin’, – L&E

  • Fast Ferry from Valletta, Entrances & Tasting Experience included

Our tour to Gozo starts with the fast ferry service from Valletta direct to the pretty port of Mgarr. The charm of Gozo is apparent the moment you arrive there. Greener, more rural and smaller than Malta. Our tour is a combination of scenic spots, historical sites, local culture and food.

Due to our early start we have an opportunity of visiting a 75 year old traditional bakery in one of the local towns. Watch them prepare for their daily baking and you will also have the opportunity to taste something they would have baked a little earlier.

Our next stop are the magnificent Ggantija temples, meaning 'Giant Temples'. These temple also enjoy UNESCO satus and considered to be amongst the oldest free standing megalithic monuments in the world dating, back over 5500 years. The adjoining visitor's centre boasts artefacts from the temple site and also from the nearby underground temple site of the Xaghra Circle (4100BC), studies of samples and results from which are still emerging.

A scenic drive will pass through quaint sleepy villages that characterise Gozo's unique charm. The drive also highlights the north coast including a stop at the Calypso Cave belvedere, this viewing point offers breathtaking views over the red sands of Ramla Bay and the lush fertile valley which leads down to it. This panoramic coastal driver drive takes us to Xwejni bay with its salt pans and the natural feature of Qolla l-Bajda.

We continue on to one of the most photographed sites on Gozo, Dwejra. This is a site of ecological and geological importance, which includes the Blue Hole, The General's Rock and Inland Sea.

We then go to the pretty seasode village of Xlendi. The picturesque bay has a small sandy beach and restaurantsilining the waterfront. Here you will have some free time for a lunch break.

After lunch we will visit, Victoria the capital of Gozo. The main attraction is the 'The Citadel', a small fortified town which dominates the heights above the island capital. This site has been inhabited since the Bronze Age period. Walking through this historical gem one can admire the medieval layout with interesting features and some excellent examples of domestic medieval architecture, blending with buildings of the Knights of St John. Once at the top, a stunning panorama of the whole island and even Malta's northern coast enfolds.

We make our back to Victoria and drive down to the port for the ferry back to Valletta.

10 of the best beaches in Malta, Gozo and Comino

boat trips to gozo from malta

The beaches of Malta tend to be dramatic, rocky and sea-sculpted, with fewer soft and sandy curves of Mediterranean coastline than you might expect.

Despite this, the Maltese make the most of every swimming spot. On these compact islands, water sports abound, and you're never far from the sea. With crystalline waters, historic wrecks and interesting underwater formations, Malta is also Europe’s best diving destination, but even snorkeling from the island nation's coastline offers a remarkable insight into an underwater world.

Whether you're keen on splashing around in the waves, spending an afternoon relaxing on the sand or enjoying a leisurely lunch of local seafood, here are the beaches to head to on Malta and its smaller sister islands of Gozo and Comino .

Large waves lap at a large curve of sandy beach, which is packed with sunbathers. In the distance a few hotels are perched on the top of the hill

1. Golden Bay, Malta

Best beach for soft sand

Malta and Gozo don’t offer many big sandy beaches, but there are a few gems. Golden Bay , on Malta’s northwestern coast, arguably the most beautiful, is a wide curve of orange-gold sand that shelves gently into the dark-blue Mediterranean. This is a place to lie down on the island's softest sand, mull over the watersports and boat trips on offer, or peruse the menus of nearby restaurants overlooking the bay.

2. Mellieħa Bay

Best beach for water sports

You’re never far from a watersports provider in Malta. For variety, Mellieħa Bay is one of the best beaches for messing about on the water, with windsurfing, kitesurfing, waterskiing, canoeing, banana boating and parasailing all on offer. This is Malta’s largest sandy beach and has a reliable northeasterly breeze that makes it ideal for wind-based water sports. Other top choices for water sports include Xlendi, Marsalforn and Golden Bay.

3. Blue Lagoon, Comino

Best beach for swimming

Beating many strong contenders, Comino’s Blue Lagoon snags the title of Malta's top swimming spot. Ringed by rocks and framed by gleaming white sand, Comino's limpid and sheltered inland sea glows periwinkle bright, and it's a heavenly place to swim.

Planning tip:  The Blue Lagoon is definitely not a secret, so in high season , you’ll be sharing the pool with a few hundred others. A better option is to skip the hordes by taking a boat trip here in the afternoon after many people have left for the day.

4. Fomm ir-Riħ

Best beach for peace and quiet

Fomm ir-Riħ – meaning ‘mouth of the wind’ – is Malta’s most remote beach. A steep and sometimes tricky path leads down to the beach from the small town of Baħrija on the northwestern Maltese coast. Such difficulty brings rewards, however, and if you’re looking for peace and quiet, gin-clear water, and magnificent coastal views, this is the beach for you.

Planning tip: The walk down takes around 20 minutes, but if the scramble doesn’t appeal, you can always approach by boat.

Two snorkelers swim down a narrow 'river' of sea water, running from the sea to a small sandy beach

5. Wied il-Għasri

Best place for snorkeling

Snorkelers note: Malta is underwater heaven. On the Gozo coast, Wied il-Għasr i is a coastal chasm that creates a narrow river of seawater, finishing in a tiny sand and shingle beach. You access the beach via a staircase hacked into the rock. Some of Malta’s finest snorkeling can be had by launching off into the channel, although it’s best avoided in rough weather.

Planning tip:  Other prime snorkeling spots include the rocky inlet of Mgarr ix-Xini and the natural sea pool of Għar Lapsi. If scuba is more your thing, there are plenty of diving centers; a popular spot for diving is the Blue Hole near Gozo's Dwejra Bay.

6. Għajn Tuffieħa

Best beach for sunbathing

Neighbor to popular Golden Bay, and sharing the same lovely outlook and soft, silky, butterscotch-colored sand, Għajn Tuffieħa is a quieter choice for sun-worshipping. Unlike Golden Bay, it's not backed by hotels, and the slightly longer walk to get there also helps to thin out the crowds. When all you want to do is lie in the sun and occasionally cool off in the sea, this is an ideal choice.

A beach with terracotta-colored sand and pale, light-blue waters

7. Ramla Bay

Best beach for families

Easily accessible by bus and car, the terracotta-colored sands of Gozo's Ramla Bay are backed by a restaurant that hires out umbrellas and sunbeds. The beach slopes gently into the water, the views up across the hills are delightful, and there’s a scramble up to Calypso’s Cave to consider if anyone’s getting bored. Ramla Bay is one of Malta’s best family beaches, although Golden Bay, Mellieħa Bay and Paradise Bay are also worthy contenders for the title.

8. Mġarr ix-Xini

Best beach for lunch

Reached via a narrow, winding road, Gozo's Mġarr ix-Xini (Port of the Galleys) was once the island's main harbor for the Knights of St John, and the rocky bay's pebbled beach is now the location of quite possibly Malta's most laid-back beachside restaurant. Service at the 10-table Rew Rew can sometimes be a little too relaxed, but lunch plates overflowing with seafood – including excellent calamari – and salad and homemade potato chips make the experience all worthwhile.

Planning tip:  Try to visit on a weekday for a shot at securing a spot in the adjacent car park, or charter a boat around the coast from Xlendi or Mġarr harbor.

Groups of people relax on the rocks surrounding a natural cove

9. St Peter’s Pool and Il-Kalanka Bay

Best natural swimming pools

Natural swimming pools, sea-sculpted from the coastal rock, are a scenic summer highlight in Malta. Located on the southeastern coast, St Peter’s Pool is one of the loveliest – a ladle-shaped scoop out of the rock that forms a sheltered lagoon for a swim, after which you can bask seal-like on the surrounding rocks.

Planning tip:  Nearby, and usually much quieter, is the swimming hole at Il-Kalanka Bay . Note the platform for jumping into the water at Il-Kalanka is higher than at St Peter's, so extra care should be taken.

10. Għar Lapsi

Best place to leap into the sea

Worthy of special mention is Għar Lapsi, a rocky inlet that lies at the base of Malta's Dingli Cliffs. It's popular with snorkelers, divers, and especially children who like leaping into the sea from the rocks. Offering brilliant views of Għar Lapsi's rocky cove, Carmen's Bar & Restaurant is another top spot for a relaxed meal.

Most people living in Malta have made use of the Gozo ferry at least once, but have you ever thought about how many people before you have made the same trip?

The first recorded ferry passage between Malta and Gozo occurred in 1241, the ferry being referred to as ‘id-dgħajsa tal-mgħodija’, literally translating to ‘the boat of the passage’.

600 years later, in 1841, a breakwater was built in the Mġarr Harbour to provide shelter to the port. On June 13th, 1885, the first regular passenger service between Gozo and Malta was inaugurated.

The service was operated by O.F. Gollcher & Sons Ltd with the Gleneagles, the latter later becoming the name of the popular bar at the Mġarr Harbour.

Fares were 8 pence one-way and one shilling round trip. Initially, a penny was collected from each passenger landing in Gozo to fund a Mass in Mġarr Church for safe arrivals. From 1892, the Gleneagles also made weekly trips from Malta to Syracuse with mail, but primarily served the Malta-Gozo route until 1914.

When was the last time you crossed over to Gozo?

The Best Things to Do in Malta

Malta may be one of the smallest countries in the world, but it certainly doesn't lack in things to do. The three-island archipelago is located a little over 100 mile south of Sicily in the Mediterranean and includes the islands of Malta, Gozo, and Comino. For such a small area, though, there are a surprising number of historic sites -ranging from megalithic temples said to date back to the 4th millennium B.C. to medieval fortresses and walled cities-and are a major draw for visitors. But activities in Malta are not limited to visiting relics of the past. The Mediterranean nation has natural wonders to explore (both above and below water), festivals to attend, and nightlife to partake in.

From rock climbing and swimming in the Mediterranean to wandering the ancient ruins of various centuries, here are some of the best things to do in Malta.

For getting to know Malta's history and ancient past

1. spend a day exploring the city of valletta and its landmarks.

  • Where : Valletta

Given Malta's strategic location and succession of rulers-from the Romans, Normans, and Sicilians to the Spanish, Knights of St. John, French, and British-it's somewhat surprising to find Valletta so well-preserved. The capital city dates back to the 16th century and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1980. When it was recognized as the European Capital of Culture in 2018, several historic landmarks, such as the city gate at the entrance to Valletta, underwent extensive restoration. When visiting save a day for wandering the city to see such landmarks as:

Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel : At nearly 138 feet high, the dome of the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel looms large on the city skyline. Although the church itself dates back to 1570, it was badly damaged during World War II and only reopened in its current form in 1981 after 23 years of rebuilding.

St. John's Co-Cathedral : The church is named a co-cathedral because the bishop of Malta also sits at St. Paul's Cathedral in Mdina. One of the world's must-visit churches, it features a glittering gold interior that represents the pinnacle of high baroque architecture, plus eight chapels dedicated to the eight branches of the Knights of Malta. History buffs will want to explore the crypt, while art lovers will appreciate the ceiling frescoes by Mattia Preti. Tickets include entrance to the attached museum.

2. Visit the National Museum of Archaeology

Housed in the baroque Auberge de Provence, the National Museum of Archaeology features a collection dating as far back as 5200 B.C., during the Neolithic period. Through such objects as delicate stone tools and Phoenician amulets, it provides a solid introduction to Malta's prehistoric history and adds context to many of the historical sites around the island. It's a perfect starting point for a tour of Valletta, and the small museum is easily be explored in an hour.

3. Upper Barrakka Gardens

One of Valletta's most scenic spots, the Upper Barrakka Gardens has memorable views of the Grand Harbour, the fortified cities of Senglea and Birgu across the harbor, and the shipyards below. Every day at noon, members of the Malta Heritage Society dress in British military uniforms and fire a ceremonial gun [cannon] salute. Visitors can stroll by beautiful fountains, and there is plenty of manicured green space for picnics. Take an elevator which connects the gardens to the Valletta waterfront, or perhaps ride the elevator at dusk to watch the sun setting over the city's rooftops and the Mediterranean.

History buffs won't want to miss the Lascaris War Rooms, a collection of tunnels and chambers 150 feet beneath the Upper Barrakka Gardens, that served as the secret headquarters for Allied operations during World War II. Commanders stationed here oversaw some of the most ambitious campaigns in the Mediterranean, including the 1943 invasion of Sicily. After the war, the War Rooms were used by the Mediterranean fleet of the Royal Navy.

4. Go back in time in the medieval town of Mdina

  • Where : Mdina

Plan to spend at least an afternoon wandering the streets of the walled city of Mdina (also known as the Silent City), which was founded in the 8th century A.D. and served as the nation's capital until medieval times. These days fewer than 100 people live in Mdina, though the walled city remains a popular tourist attraction. After your visit, make a stop at Coogi's Restaurant & Tea Garden for lunch or a quick drink while enjoying views of the surrounding farms on the other side of the city's walls.

Game of Thrones fans will be interested to know that Mdina was one of many filming locations for the series.

5. Tour St. Paul's Catacombs

  • Where : Rabat

Located on the outskirts of Mdina in Rabat, St. Paul's Catacombs are an homage to Paul the apostle. Paul and 274 others were shipwrecked just off Malta around 60 A.D. on their way to Rome . Legend has it that the survivors took refuge in a grotto, above which a church and monument were later built in the apostle's honor. The Catacombs, which represent the earliest evidence of Christianity in Malta, are a labyrinthine set of underground cemeteries. Covering an area of over 21,000 square feet, the catacombs twist and turn with dozens of hypogea (chambers) once used for burials.

6. Explore the Cittadella

  • Where : Victoria, Gozo

The site of the Cittadella on the island of Gozo is thought to have been inhabited since Neolithic time and more certainly by the Bronze Age. The land was used by the Romans for a settlement. The Cittadella is a fortified citadel, which overlooks Gozo's current capital of Victoria.

A walk through the striking limestone structure is a must when visiting Gozo. While wandering the grounds, notice the holy shrines under the Norman-style arches and the doors adorned with a coat of arms. Up on the ramparts, you'll find a 360-degree view of Gozo's hills, valleys, and villages, with the Mediterranean in the distance. There are also various on-site churches and museums to visit, such as the cave-like Gunpowder Magazine, where gunpowder was stored in the late 17th and 18th centuries.

Other nearby historic sites worth a stop in Gozo include the ornate St. George's Basilica , which tops the hill at the heart of Victoria and the baroque Cathedral of the Assumption, enclosed within the walls of the Cittadella.

7. The Ggantija Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

  • Where : Gozo

The Ggantija Temples , named after the Maltese word for "giant," are the oldest and most impressive of the megalithic temples in the Maltese islands. Built during the Neolithic period from coralline limestone, the ruins are more than 5,500 years old, predating Stonehenge-and even the pyramids of Egypt. This UNESCO World Heritage site was recently restored; it is visitor friendly with walkways and a new center featuring displays of prehistoric artifacts from across Gozo.

For experiencing Malta's more current culture, food, and nightlife

8. shop for gifts and snacks on and near merchants street.

Stalls at the busy Merchants Street Market, which is open every morning of the week, sell traditional Maltese crafts alongside bargain clothing, jewelry, and other gifts. Right off Merchants Street is the Is-Suq Tal-Belt Valletta Food Market, an indoor collection of food stalls ideal for sampling Maltese food . Swing by Lot 61 Coffee Roasters across the street from the food market for a cup of some of the best brew in the city.

9. Watch live music at Bridge Bar or Cafe Society

Valletta by day may be all about sightseeing and jostling with crowds of day-trippers from docked cruise ships, but nighttime in the capital city is an entirely different experience. On warm nights in particular, the nightlife spills out from the city's bars and restaurants onto the streets. On these evenings, join the locals lounging on city steps and enjoy a drink and live music at establishments like Bridge Bar or Cafe Society .

10. Attend a festival

  • Where : Nationwide

It's easy to time a visit to Malta with a festival, thanks to a diverse calendar of events . For a more traditional cultural experience, time your trip for " festa season "-a series of extended weekends that runs from the end of May to September-when towns and villages throughout Malta celebrate the feast of their respective patron saints with papier-mâché statues, Maltese delicacies, and fireworks.

However, some of the more standout events worth planning a trip around include Birgu Fest and Notte Bianca , both annual festivals that take place in October. Birgu Fest is a festival in which the entire old city of Vittoriosa, also known as Birgu, turns off all of its lights and illuminates the city's ancient walls and cobblestone streets by candlelight. Notte Bianca, also a nighttime festival, takes place in Valletta but is more focused on music and partying than the romance of candlelight. If you happen to visit in February, grab a costume and head to Nadur, Gozo, for its macabre Carnival celebrations .

For getting out to see Malta's natural beauty

11. take a boat tour to the blue grotto or blue lagoon.

  • Where : Qrendi (Malta) or Comino

No trip to Malta would be complete without an excursion on the Mediterranean, and one of the most enjoyable ways to experience it is with a boat tour. If you're short on time, take a taxi or drive to the coastal town of Qrendi, where you can hop on a quick 30-minute boat tour to the Blue Grotto, an oceanside cave.

If you have at least a day to spare, it's worthwhile to sign up for a longer boat tour to see the Blue Lagoon, located on the uninhabited island of Comino, which is the archipelago's smallest. There are both day and half-day trips to the Blue Lagoon and Comino departing from either Valletta or Gozo.

12. Walk along the Xwejni Salt Pans on Gozo

  • Where : Qbajjar Bay, Gozo

On the northern coast of Gozo, visitors can get a fascinating introduction to one of the island's most important traditions: sea salt production. Just past Qbajjar Bay is a nearly two-mile stretch of 350-year-old salt pans, which remain a vital source of income for Gozitans to this day. In the summer, locals scrape up salt crystals, and store them in nearby caves for later use. Several Gozitan businesses package the salt in gift jars, which are available for purchase in many of the island's souvenir stores.

13. Take a scenic drive on Gozo

Gozo is mostly an agrarian island, so you won't find any big cities here. Instead, focus on exploring the outdoors, and in particular the seaside cliffs and rock formations, scattered about the island. The most famous is the Azure Window, a rock archway that collapsed in 2017 . Even so, visitors still flock to the location to see its remnants. Equally stunning, though less well-known, are Wied il-Għasri a beautiful sea canyon you can hike to and swim in and Wied Il-Mielaħ a (still-standing) natural rock arch perched above the sea, both of which are on the north coast of Gozo.

14. Go for a swim in the Mediterranean

  • Where : Various

You won't find many white, sandy beaches on Malta or its two smaller islands, but that doesn't mean there aren't any great areas for swimming and beach days-quite the opposite. Grab a beach blanket or towel and spread out on the rocks at Paradise Bay, Wied Iż-Żurrieq, or St. Peter's Pool in Malta. If you're on Gozo, head to Xlendi.

If you go to St. Peter's Pool, end your day with a seafood meal in Marsaxlokk at casual eatery Skuna or the slightly more upscale restaurant Tartarun . On Sundays, the town has its weekly fish market. Though often touted as a great tourist attraction in Malta, it's okay to skip unless you're buying fish to cook later.

15. Rock climb its coastal cliffs

Malta's seaside cliffs may not always be great for lounging, but they are excellent for rock climbing. If you'd like to try your hand at this adventurous sport, sign up for a tour with Gozo Adventures in Gozo or MC Adventure in Malta. The guides with both tour companies are very experienced and friendly, and have options suitable for all levels-from total newbies to experienced outdoor climbers.
