Panjim or Panaji, the state capital of Goa, is beside the Mandovi River. It has the Miramar Beach, Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, Fontainhas or the Latin Quarter, the Goa State Museum, Science Center, Campal Gardens, and several casinos, but most tourists visit Panjim for a cruise in Goa . It is believed that she was both a princess and a noted scholar, who became a Christian at around the age of 14 and also converted hundreds of people to Christianity, and was martyred around the age of 18. Catherine was known to be a spiritual pathfinder and raise her voice against the oppression of the Christians under the rule of Roman emperor Maxentius. She was so strong and logical with her arguments that the king himself was incapable of countering them and has a then he formed a committee of 50 philosophers to debate her ideas.However, even the assembly conceded defeat in front of her and confessed Christianity as their belief. Out of anger, the king burnt the philosophers alive and sentenced st.catherine to prison. Catherine did not give up, and she was succeeded in converting not only the jailers but also the king's wife. It is believed that she showed the path of Christianity to 200 people. Even when she was facing the worse condition of her life, she continued to stretch the word of Jesus. She was honoured with the title of"patroness of the wheel-wrights" because it is believed then when she was fastened to a spiked wheel as it was mentioned in her death sentence the wheel broke and she was left uninjured. And when she was finally beheaded, it is said that angle took her remains and laid them to rest atop Mount Sinai. When you visit the Se Cathedral, you can witness the Saint Catherine ornaments, a crown portraying her royal birth and has a book in her hands, which signifies her sound knowledge as she points a spiked wheel, which reveals her martyrdom.Se Cathedral HistoryThe Cathedral is devoted to St. Catherine of Alexandria, it is said that it was built to celebrate the victory of the Portuguese ruler Alfonso Albuquerque who destroyed the Muslim army and took ownership of the city of Goa. Consequently, it is also called St. Catherine's' Cathedral. In 1953, the Cathedral was presented with "The Golden Rose" by Venerable Pope Pius XII. It is a gold ornament, which the Popes of the Catholic Church have traditionally favoured and given as a symbol of devotion or affection.You can witness it as it is placed on the tomb of St. Francis Xavier. It was approved by Governor George Cabral to be spread in 1552 on the remains of an earlier structure. The formation of the church began in 1562. The church was completed in 1619 and was consecrated in 1640.  It is a perfect place to experience a blend of peace and tranquillity. You will be filled with positivity when you will visit this sacred place.The architecture of Se Cathedral  The architecture of Se Cathedral is awe-inspiring and elegant. The architectural style is a blend of Gothic elements and typical Portuguese style, or you can say that the architecture style of the Se Cathedral is Portuguese-Manueline. There were two different techniques that were opted to make the church. The exterior was made in Tuscan style and the interior has been built in and Corinthian style. With dimensions of 250 feet long and 181 feet wide, this church has a  delightfully decorated entrance that measures around 115 feet in height. The church is amazingly decorated, yet the style is intriguing and simple. The Cathedral has been built on an elevated base of laterite, which is covered with the thick lime plaster.You can also see the bell tower which is located on the southern side of the façade. The building of the church is rectangular on the plan but has a cruciform layout in the interior. The main altar is devoted to Catherine of Alexandria, and you can also see several old paintings on either side of it. You can also see the Chapel, which is known as the Cross of Miracles, it is believed that there was an image of Christ that was said to have appeared in 1619.

I have booked the morning of 25th of March, the tour was confirmed from 12pm. I was called at 11:50 to be told the guide will be late 30 min. After many messages he showed up at 13:30. The tour was supposed to last two hours and to include red fort entrance, museum entrance, bottled water and snacks. We only had Red Fort visit, no museum (he lied first that it is closed then confessed he had not tickets), no water and no snacks. One of the most expensive tour organized by Sun Leisure World India, 12,000 INR for three people (120 £)! For you to have an idea, the entrance ticket for Red Fort is 800 INR/person. After many messages they agreed to return 1,200 INR (water, snacks and museum!) saying that 50% of 12,000 was already gone to TripAdvisor! The biggest scam in my life. Very frustrating and I feel I was robbed. Don’t use this company, please! They will spoil your day! And TripAdviser should check their vendors more carefully and not allow this type of scam. His explanation was that he contacted me by email on the day of the tour a few hours before scheduled starting time. I was supposed to confirm by email to him my attandance. Since I was out and about in the city of Varanasi, I did not notice. The tour had been confirmed, I had paid the full amount up front, the starting time at 5:30pm was set and the meeting point clearly stated. And yet the guide could not be bothered to show up. Tripadvisor and Viator should do a quality check on their business partners! My advice is to stay away from that tour. It is highly overprised and totally unreliable. You will apparently get some unmotivated tour guide who will just book you on a boat with the locals. You can hire a boat ride at each of the ghats for a fraction of the tour price. Kashi or Varanasi, as it is known, a city that is uniquely, a one-of-a-kind mystery and a saga to many a visitor, whether it is a spiritual yogi on his path to know the ultimate truth, or just about another curious traveller that wants to know the sanctity of the place. Time and space, otherwise known as the Brahmand, have had their special significance here. And so is the belief of many a spiritual seeker, who is on the path to know Life’s Extent, and to experience the possibility of a merger of the Atma (the soul) with the Paramatma (the super consciousness). So then, is there really the presence of an amalgamation of the microcosm with the macrocosm, and if so, is there a mystic way to experience this, a question that lies deep within every spiritual seeker that visits Varanasi…… To every true seeker that visits kashi or Varanasi, the city not only grips them with a sense of ancientness like none other, but also reminds one of how so very ephemeral life really is – yes, ephemeral, transient, and short-lived! May be it is also right to say that, one begins to ponder on the more deeper aspects of his existence, or of his birth, and death, and the existence of the soul and possibly of its journey through the many lifetimes, through which it evolves, and thus also causing human civilization to evolve as a whole. So, what then makes kashi or Varanasi so ancient? Could it be the many old cobble-stoned narrow alleys, or may be its crowded streets, or probably the many old temples that dot the city, or could it possibly be the time immemorial ritualistic traditions that are still in vogue, or may be its age old traditional crafts…..one wonders, if all of these factors contribute to its earning, its justified title as one of the “oldest living cities” on the planet. Like the saying goes, all roads lead to Rome…..so also at kashi, every narrow alley or “gully” leads to the banks of the holy river Ganges. And what strikes the beholder is the stark beauty of its architecture, so much so that the gullies descend down a flight of steps to the rivers’ bank. It sure has been a well conceived plan, so thoroughly perfect in its architectural grandeur, to have conceived these Ghats, that in a way form the very essence of kashi. Some of the famous ghats are the Assi ghat, the last ghat and named after the Assi river of Varanasi and the Varuna ghat, named after the Varuna river, both tributaries of the Ganges. And thus the etymology of the name “Varanasi”. The Dashashwameda ghat, legend has it that it is known for the great sacrifice of ten horses done by Lord Brahma, in His potential yagna, done to appease Lord Shiva! The Tulsi ghat, the Shivala ghat, the Harischandra ghat, the kedar ghat, and the famous Manikarnika ghat. It is also much believed by the Hindus that since kashi is one of the favorite places of Lord Shiva, it is a place where when one meets his final moment, his soul attains moksha or is liberated. And so as the tradition goes, even today, the dead are cremated at the Harischandra ghat and the Manikarnika ghat, and in the old traditional way of lighting a pyre. As the story goes, it is said that, there are always burning pyres at the Manikarnika ghat, as Lord Shiva was enraged after Goddess Parvati lost her earring here and so there is ever a flame that burns here …… These ghats serve as bathing quays for many a pilgrim, that wishes to have his traditional “holy dip” in the Ganges, in the hope of getting rid of their accumulated sins of all their past lifetimes. Even until this day, these bathing ghats on the banks of the Holy river Ganges, serve for many a devout Hindu, to perform his morning prayers while chanting the mantras, standing in the river knee deep, as the rising sun rays bathe and cleanse his body, mind and soul. Legend holds it that, once there was a fight between the two mighty, holy rivers, the Ganges and the Yamuna, as to who would flow into kashi. And at Triveni Sangam, where there is a confluence of the three Holy rivers of Ganga, Yamuna and the Saraswathi, it was Saraswathi that decided that Ganga would flow into kashi, but would adopt the colors of the river Yamuna, otherwise known as the green river. Thus, the Ganges, which otherwise is a white river almost until the Triveni Sangam, adopts the shade of green after that point. A must-visit list of some of the most famous temples of kashi are the following – starting from the kashi Viswanath temple, the Kasi Visalakshi temple, the Annapoorna temple, the Durga temple, the Kalabhairav temple, the Sankat Mochan temple, the Tulsi Manas Mandir, the Mrityunjay temple, the Gowri-kedareshwar temple, and the Birla Mandir, just to name a few….. Varanasi is also famous for its famous silk known as “Benares Silk”, that is woven into sarees and fabrics, that are almost a must-have addition to any Indian woman’s wardrobe collection. So also is it rich tradition of weaving, and the thread work with their traditional motifs. Another delight of Varanasi is the “Paan”, a sweet and tangy condiment, that is made from a special variety of betel leaves and betel nuts. Also, kashi is famous for its rich cow’s milk, and hence its dairy products of curd, or sweet cream, and dairy sweetmeats made out of such rich milk. So much to the old and ancient city’s rich heritage and culture. Thus, whether you are a practicing Hindu with utmost faith in Hinduism or just a backpack traveller, Varanasi or kasha, could most definitely be a must-see stopover place on your travelogues……..visit to experience the ancientness of the city, its spiritual history, and its much-deserved place in the annals of human civilization for its own subtle and yet beautiful reasons….. There is no onsite parking (as claimed at the time of booking) and you need to take a lot of U-turns and use google maps to park your vehicle at Pay n Park at a mall which is just opposite to the jetty..lot of locals will be standing on the main road and try to mislead you with directions for parking and sell tickts in black in order to make money. Better have your tickts booked online on goibibo or MMT as it is cheaper and will save u getting looted. After parking the vehicle again I had to ask 3 different people on how to reach the jetty.. There is a narrow passage below the main bridge for this.. Now to collect the passes I went to the counter (after asking 5 different people as local business people will try to confuse you with their own passes). On reaching the counter they took about 20 minutes to find the confirmation email (that too after my assistance). Then we could finally enter the jetty. Boat ride and shows were okay for the price. Crowd was full of drunkards and few families and couples. Altogether it was a waste experience. There are no signboard whatsoever. Lots of misleading people in and around the premises. Sub standard arrangements. 1 soft drink and 1 poor samosa is beung offered complimentary. I am giving 1 Star only for the amazing view during night. Read more Written 14 December 2019
