Our 25 Favorite Fall Beach Destinations

Sometimes planning an off-season beach trip is the way to go.

We have nothing against summer at the beach or fall in the mountains , but give us a balmy autumn day on a stretch of sand with no crowds, and we're in a state of bliss. As Frommer's notes, while North Florida and South Florida have opposite high seasons, their shoulder seasons (that's when they begin dropping rates) are consistent: April through May and September through November. In other coastal locations, shoulder season is a little harder to define. For example, on the Outer Banks, it's roughly April through May and September through October.

Before you book your sweater-weather trip to the shore , keep in mind these few caveats about off-season travel. For one, it's important to pay attention to weather reports. Fall is also hurricane season, and Mid-Atlantic beaches will be cooler than those farther south, especially at night. (That's not necessarily a bad thing, once we've made it through the scorcher months.) Second, some businesses are only open seasonally, so you may have to revise your must-visit spots in case of cold-weather closures.

All things considered, we think planning an off-season beach trip is worth it to have a few days on a fabulous stretch of sand and sea , plus you'll have your run of the place.

Anna Maria Island, Florida

Find a touch of Old Florida on this barrier island located 20 minutes from Bradenton. Anna Maria Island is a paradise of white sand and emerald waters at the southern edge of Tampa Bay. This low-key haven boasts 7 miles of beaches, shopping on historic Bridge Street , watersports, and fishing piers and charters, so you'll find plenty to do—without the summer crowds.

Bay St. Louis, Mississippi

Fall getaways in the South always include fairs and festivals. October's Cruisin' the Coast in Bay St. Louis is a doozy—a gathering of thousands of classic cars, with charming Gulf towns offering food, live music, and special events. Bay St. Louis is part of the "secret coast," a quiet strip of shoreline on the Mississippi Sound, but still offers plenty of life in Old Town .

Caladesi Island State Park, Florida

Catch the Caladesi Island Ferry to this natural island off Florida's Gulf Coast , near Dunedin and Clearwater, for white sand beaches, swimming, beach rambling, fishing, and wildlife spotting. Spend the day paddling through the mangroves or taking a nature walk to the historic Scharrer Homestead. Camp on a boat at the marina or head back to one of the many hotels nearby at Clearwater Beach.

Cape Charles, Virginia

Explore the coastal town of Cape Charles , Virginia, to discover a different kind of beach. This town is a Victorian-era planned community on Virginia's Eastern Chesapeake shores, which are beautiful in fall. Stroll by historic homes, visit shops and galleries, cruise around the barrier islands, enjoy the local oysters, and cap it all off by watching the sun set over the bay.

Clearwater Beach, Florida

You could spend a long weekend just strolling the eateries and watering holes here. But throw in gorgeous beaches, and the wow factor goes even higher. Take the kids to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium during the day and stop by Pier 60 for entertainment at night. With so many family friendly activities, it's no wonder that Clearwater Beach is often rated a top destination.

Fernandina Beach, Florida

Located on Amelia Island, which lies on Florida's Atlantic Coast, Fernandina Beach is a laid-back beach town with great shops and restaurants as well as broad sandy beaches. When you aren't enjoying Main Street, visit the unspoiled wilderness of nearby Amelia Island State Park or immerse yourself in history at Fort Clinch State Park and the Amelia Island Lighthouse .

Grayton Beach, Florida

Grayton Beach stands out on fabled 30-A, a spot that's perfect for fall vacations. Unlike the nearby planned communities Seaside and Rosemary Beach, this funky little village is delightfully unplanned . Its rebuilt restaurant and music venue, The Red Bar , touts itself as a magnet for locals, tourists, "politicians, boat captains, beach bums, celebrities, and oystermen too."

Gulf Shores, Alabama

Skip the spring break crowds by visiting Gulf Shores in the autumn months. Pack a sweater and enjoy the less-crowded beaches as well as the vibrant sunrises and sunsets. Swim in the warm, gentle waters of the Gulf; go parasailing; spot dolphins on a cruise; or dine on the fresh catch of the day at one of many restaurants. History buffs will enjoy visiting Fort Morgan , while families can catch the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo .

Hatteras Island, North Carolina

This spot on North Carolina's Outer Banks barrier islands has access to both the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound, with plenty of places to launch a boat or cast a line along the shore. Whether you fish, surf, shell, or swim, you're likely to spend time at the beach here. Hatteras Island also includes a stretch of National Seashore, seven villages, the aptly named Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum , and two lighthouses—including the black-and-white spiraled Cape Hatteras Lighthouse .

Huntington Beach State Park, South Carolina

Bring your walking shoes to explore the Sandpiper Pond Nature Trail and Kerrigan Nature Trail. Jekyll Island, Georgia

This Georgia island's Driftwood Beach is a favorite with photographers and those seeking some solitude on the sand . Jekyll is part of the string of Georgia's "Golden Isles," along with St. Simons, Little St. Simons, and Sea Island. You'll find 10 miles of shoreline, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center , biking, golf, boating, and more—not to mention the Shrimp & Grits Festival in late fall.

Key West, Florida

There aren't many places where you feel as if you've completely left your normal life behind and entered a totally different universe—without even leaving the South. Key West is one. This quirky island is closer to Cuba than Miami, and has been home to Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, Elizabeth Bishop, Robert Frost, and Jimmy Buffett. When you're not checking out their watering holes , you can dive or snorkel in the surrounding coral and artificial reefs .

Lewes, Delaware

A $6-million renovation made a great park even better at Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes, Delaware . Enjoy six miles of hard-packed beaches that invite sunbathing, sea glass-hunting, hiking, and more. History buffs will want to spend time in the town of Lewes, colonized by the Dutch in the 1630s and bombarded by the British during the War of 1812. Visit the Lewes Maritime Museum at the battle-scarred Cannonball House.

Miami, Florida

Visit Miami in fall to luxuriate in warm weather while skipping the winter and summer crowds. Lots of lively beaches as well as world class arts and culture ensure there's never a dearth of things to do in Miami. The stone crabs featured at the South Beach Seafood Festival in fall will have you salivating.

Ocean City, Maryland

This Maryland resort town is located between the Atlantic Ocean and Isle of Wight Bay. Visit for miles and miles of sand and a boardwalk hub with places to eat, shop, and stay. Travel to nearby Assateague Island for an unforgettable day trip.

Ocean Springs, Mississippi

Between Biloxi and Gautier is this picturesque Mississippi beach town with live oak-lined streets and beaches too. Front Beach extends from the Biloxi Bay Bridge to Ocean Springs Harbor, and there's also the nearby Gulf Islands National Seashore for sand and sea. Ocean Springs is also known for its galleries and hosts the biggest arts festival in the state every fall.

Padre Island National Seashore, Texas

The spring break revelers on South Padre are nowhere to be seen in fall. Head north for even more serenity on the Padre Island National Seashore—the longest undeveloped barrier island in the world. Then head back to South Padre for the boat tours, waterfront dining, horseback riding, and the South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center & Alligator Sanctuary .

Pawley's Island, South Carolina

Just a short hop from Myrtle Beach, Pawley's offers a serene Lowcountry experience —the kind of place where you rent an oceanfront cottage for a week and completely forget what you do for a living . Sounds like a dream, right? When you're ready to pull yourself out of your beach chair, check out the kayaking, fishing, shopping, and island nightlife.

Pensacola Beach, Florida

This is a great autumn beach at the western tip of Florida. St. Augustine, Florida

Tybee Island, Georgia

As fall beach destinations go, it's hard to imagine a better spot than this chill, bike-friendly beach burg less than 20 miles from Savannah. Amble down the wide-open beaches to search for fossilized Megalodon teeth as big as your hand or visit Georgia's oldest and tallest lighthouse.

Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina

This popular sand-and-surf village is a favorite among surfers and paddlers of every description. It's located east of Wilmington and draws visitors looking to set sail, go deep-sea fishing, or hang out in the laid-back beach town. Wrightsville Beach is a lively destination that hosts competitions and festivals throughout the fall.

It’s that time of year again. Summer is about over and the leaves are beginning to change colors. It’s time for fall foliage, pumpkin spice lattes, and a whole bunch of beach vacations.

There’s no better way to enjoy the fall weather than to spend some time at the beach. There are few things more relaxing than listening to the waves crash and taking a walk along the shoreline. Breathing in that fresh ocean air can be so refreshing.

But which beaches are the best? After looking at many beach cities in the United States, we have found the best ones for you. They offer great places to stay, things to do, and they are beautiful during this season.

So, pack your bag, grab some sunscreen (or a sweater), and get ready for an unforgettable fall escape. 

Virginia Beach, Virginia

If you’re looking for a change of scenery and want to escape the chilly autumn weather, why not head down to the Gulf of Mexico beaches? The temps are still in the 70s and the water is crystal clear. Bonus tip: Florida is the only continental US state where you can watch a sunrise and sunset from a beach on each side. See the sunrise in Miami , drive about 90 minutes to 2 hours to Naples or Ft. Myers beach to watch the sunset on the same day. Bring money for the toll road . 

Pro tip: Hurricane season is June 1 – November 30th for the Atlantic and Gulf states. Keep this in mind when planning a beach vacation.

Sanibel is the perfect place to go when you want to get away from it all. It is one of Florida’s most gorgeous barrier islands and is home to some of the country’s best shelling beaches. Plus, it has some of the most beautiful sunsets you’ll ever see. You can go shelling, swimming, or enjoy some fresh seafood at one of the island’s waterfront restaurants .

This is a popular spot, but if you want to, the crowds head there in the Fall when temperatures are still high and only locals are on the beach!

Pacific Coast Beaches

If you’re looking for a breathtaking fall getaway, the Pacific Coast has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The dramatic coastlines and Golden Gate Bridge provide a stunning backdrop to nature at its finest. From hiking and biking to whale watching and wine tasting, there’s plenty to do on a Pacific Coast beach vacation in autumn. So, come enjoy the brilliant colors and cooling temperatures on America’s West Coast!

Fall is a great time to visit Baker Beach . It’s one of the most picturesque beaches in the world and it’s close to downtown San Francisco.  You can walk from the Golden Gate Bridge to the beach and see the city skyline in front of you.

Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy watching surfers catch wave after wave. The water is cold, even in autumn, so there are usually very few swimmers here. If you’re looking for a great place to sunbathe or take amazing pictures, Baker Beach is the place to be.

The waves are calmer than those at Ocean Beach, so it’s good for families with children.

With its warm waters and soft sands, this beach on the island of Maui is one of Hawaii’s best. And while it might get a bit chilly during the fall months, it’s still worth visiting. Just because summer is over doesn’t mean you can’t go to the beach. In fact, some beaches are actually better in the fall. Many U.S. beach towns host festivals and other special events to entice families to visit in fall. Think less crowds and lower hotel rates, too. Here are 10 beach vacations that are better in the fall.

1. Newport, RI

There’s nothing like fall in Newport, Rhode Island . It’s a lovely time to stroll the famous Cliff Walk, the ocean on one side and Gilded Age-mansions (including The Breakers) on the other. Time your visit with the free-admission Bowen’s Wharf Seafood Fest (Oct. 19 to 20, 2019), where you can feast on lobster rolls, oysters and clam chowda’—perfect for a chilly fall day.

2. Myrtle Beach, SC

Summer runs late in Myrtle Beach—particularly North Myrtle Beach, where the Endless Summer Festival is hosted in late-October. Best of all, the entire event is free! Of course, the fun in Myrtle Beach stretches beyond the fall festival, with an amusement park, mini-golf, food and the famous SkyWheel on its boardwalk.

3. Virginia Beach, VA

Virginia Beach celebrates the end of summer with a month-long, annual celebration! The Neptune Festival kicks off at the end of August and includes a craft beer fest, wine festival, sandsculpting contest, arts and crafts show and more. Other highlights of the festival include fireworks, parades, and teen programming.

4. Ocean City, MD

Visit the boardwalk in Ocean City, Maryland , to enjoy SunFest, one of the biggest free craft shows in the country. Live entertainment is provided all day, and at night, the festival includes major acts. The event takes place Sept. 19 to 22, 2019. 5. South Padre Island, TX

South Padre Island is one of the best beaches in the fall; in fact, fall is actually the best time to visit this destination on the Gulf of Mexico. In early October, South Padre Island hosts Sand Castle Days, a fun event in which families are invited to watch master sand builders create fantastical creations. Visitors can then participate in amateur sandcastle building competitions. Live music, arts and crafts tents, and children’s play areas add to the fun.

Beyond the beach, other things to do during a fall beach vacation in South Padre Island include a visit to Sea Turtle Inc., a turtle rehabilitation center, and South Padre Island Adventure Park, with horseback riding, ziplining and more.

6. Gulf Shores, AL

Visit the Gulf Shores Oct. 10 to 13, 2019, for the National Shrimp Festival, when more than 300 vendors are on hand to sell arts and crafts, as well as — what else—shrimp! Two stages provide continuous live entertainment, and the Children’s Activity Village keeps little ones happy. There is also a sand sculpture contest on Saturday—may the best shrimp win!

The autumn weather in the Gulf Shores is also pleasant for lazy afternoons on the beaches, as well as water adventures. Take the kids on a boat ride with Orange Beach Pirate Ship Adventures or visit the Bon Secor National Wildlife Refuge.

Lincoln City is otherwise known as the Kite Flying Capital of the World, celebrating the Lincoln City Fall Kite Festival every October (in addition to a summer kite festival). The event takes place Oct. 5 to 6, 2019, and includes kite-making workshops, show kites, a kids’ parade and more. Aside from the festival, other things to do in Lincoln City, Oregon, during the fall include hiking the local state parks, outlet shopping or simply whiling away a weekend at the beach (even if it’s a little chilly).

8. York, ME

York, Maine , is quintessential New England, with a small collection of shops and eateries and two fantastic beaches: Short Sands and Long Sands. In the fall, families can attend HarvestFest, which includes a Kidsfest with games, entertainment, crafts, hayrides and a special pumpkin stroll. The event, which takes place Oct. 19, 2019 on Short Sands Beach, provides plenty of adult festivities, as well. Live bands, food and beverage vendors, crafters and a marketplace fill the weekend with fun.

While in town, be sure to visit York’s Wild Kingdom Zoo and Fun Park and go for an easy, scenic hike on the Wiggly Bridge at Steedman Woods. Stop by Cape Neddick Nubble Lighthouse for pictures and a picnic, too!

9. Rehoboth Beach, DE

The Sea Witch Halloween & Fiddler’s Festival takes place in Delaware’s Rehoboth Beach annually, with this year’s event scheduled for Oct. 26 to 28. Families enjoy music, a horse parade, magic shows, pumpkin carving, a costume parade, and free outdoor movies in the park at dark. Other great fall activities in Rehoboth Beach: biking the trails in Cape Henlopen State Park, exploring the downtown shops and restaurants, and yes, even going to the beach (which is far less crowded this time of year). Also check out downtown Lewes , a short drive away.

10. Jekyll Island, GA

The temps drop and the crowds lessen on Jekyll Island come fall, making it a great time to enjoy the island’s beaches. You’ll find lower hotel rates at this time, too. Make it a long weekend and visit Savannah, which is especially fun at Halloween.

11. Long Beach Island, NJ

Don’t get us wrong—we love Long Beach Island , New Jersey, in the summer. But considering Fantasy Island Amusement Park remains open on weekends through mid-October and you can still enjoy nice beach weather (albeit a bit chilly) after Labor Day, why not plan a fall visit? Other fall highlights in LBI include the LBI Fly Kite Festival (now in its fifth year) and Chowder Fest.

These U.S. beach towns are even better in the fall

Fewer crowds and mild weather make these coastal communities a dream offseason.

Summer may be over, but beach season doesn’t have to be. In fact, with fewer crowds and cooler temperatures, fall is the best time to explore coastal towns where cultural sites, natural wonders, and tons of history tell memorable stories to take back home. Here are seven seaside escapes that are even better offseason.

Cape May, New Jersey

Cape May, one of the oldest seaside resorts in the United States , doesn’t shut down like other Jersey Shore towns once summer ends. Come fall, visitors have plenty of elbow room to walk or bike along the promenade, explore the two miles of glittering shoreline, and stop for a sticky bun at the family-owned Madison’s Bakery or a double IPA from Cape May Brewery .

A National Historic District, Cape May has more than 600 well-preserved, colorful Victorian homes (think intricately designed woodwork, pitched roofs, and wraparound front porches) built after an 1878 fire destroyed 35 acres of the town.

Nearby, nature lovers can get a bird’s-eye view of the shore by climbing the 199 steps to the top of the historic Cape May Lighthouse , built in 1859. If time allows, explore the skeletal remains of the S.S. Atlantus at Sunset Beach and search for “Cape May Diamonds,” pure quartz crystals first discovered by the Kechemeche who inhabited this peninsula in the 17th century.

Haleʻiwa, Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi

Anchoring what’s known as the Seven Mile Miracle of world-class surf breaks on Oʻahu’s North Shore, Haleʻiwa is no ordinary beach town. Behind the colorful plantation-style structures selling fish tacos and shave ice is a history that dates to the 12th century. Back then Native Hawaiians lived in this land of fertile valleys, natural springs, and access to the ocean.

Queen Liliʻuokalani, the last sovereign monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom, vacationed here during the summer. In fact, she worshipped at a Protestant church built in 1890 that still stands today . The Haleʻiwa Hotel, which had 14 suites with hot-and-cold running water (a luxury), opened in 1899 and was considered Oʻahu’s first hotel. (It closed in 1943 and was torn down.)

Native Hawaiians discovered the epic surf along this coastline, which now lures surfers—and hordes of spectators—in the winter when massive, storm-fueled waves roll in. Fall months are quieter and slower, even by Hawaiʻi standards, with fewer people lazing on nearby beaches and wandering in the dozens of boutiques, surf shops, art galleries, and restaurants.

Revere Beach, Massachusetts

This three-mile stretch five miles north of Boston was established in 1895 by the Massachusetts legislature, making Revere Beach Reservation the first public beach in the U.S. The crescent-shaped shore hugging Massachusetts Bay attracted visitors to the Coney Island of the East, with its dance halls, movie theaters, restaurants, carousels, and, at one point, two of the tallest and fastest roller coasters in the world.

The infamous Blizzard of 1978 dumped 27 inches of snow on Boston over two days, destroying much of Revere Beach, which helped spur the area’s revitalization. Today, you can stroll the boulevard, grab a roast beef sammie or lobster roll at Kelly’s Roast Beef , and dig into a sundae at the family-run Twist & Shake . The beach is also home to the endangered, sand-hued piping plover.

Cannon Beach, Oregon

Since the 15th century, the area surrounding Cannon Beach, about 80 miles west of Portland, was occupied by Native American tribes, including the Clatsop, Nehalem , and Tillamook . Spanish explorers arrived here as early as the 1500s, followed in 1806 by William Clark and Sacagawea . The latter was commemorated by a 10-foot cedar sculpture called the “ Welcome Pole ” by Native American artist Guy Capoeman. You can see this work on the self-guided Cannon Beach Public Art Walking Tour , which spans 1.5 miles.

The beach was named for the artillery that washed ashore after the fabled U.S.S. Shark sank in 1846. Visitors can see one of its namesake cannons at the Cannon Beach History Center and Museum .

But the expansive beach is still the main draw, crowned by monolithic Haystack Rock , a 235-foot basalt sea stack right on the shoreline. (You might recognize it from The Goonies and Kindergarten Cop .) At low tide, explore tidepools teeming with sea stars, anemones, crabs, and nudibranchs. September is often the warmest on the coast, although it gets much cooler around October.

Laguna Beach, California

Located 50 miles south of Los Angeles , this scalloped coastline with its freshwater canyon lakes once drew nomadic Native Americans. Back then it was called Lagonas, a corruption of the Spanish word for lagoon. After President Abraham Lincoln signed the Homestead Act in 1862, 41 homesteaders claimed land here—the only town in Orange County that was homesteaded; ranchers developed the rest.

Today about 30 beaches draw sun seekers, from the action-packed Main Beach (Michael Jordan once played at the basketball courts here) to the secluded Thousand Steps Beach . (It actually only takes 218 steps down a steep staircase to get there.)

Fall is the best time to visit—the crowds have thinned, the water is warm, and the weather is nice enough to eat at one of the many alfresco restaurants. After, hit the 2.4-mile Top of the World hike , which offers panoramic views from Catalina Island to Mount Baldy.

Atlantic Beach, South Carolina

Known as the Black Pearl, Atlantic Beach is one of the few Black-owned beaches that remain in the U.S. For more than three decades, this town spanning just four blocks was a bustling vacation spot for Black beach-goers living in the segregated South. In the early 1930s, Black entrepreneurs and families ran hotels, restaurants, and shops here. But while the town boomed in the 1940s and ’50s, it declined after segregation as Black tourists left to explore other vacation spots. These days, residents—many who are descendants of the Gullah Geechee, former enslaved people from the west coast of Africa—are working to preserve the town’s history . You can visit historic sites in the area, mostly at nearby Myrtle Beach.

St. Augustine Beach, Florida

Forty-two years before the English colonized Jamestown and 55 years before Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, the Spanish explorer Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés stepped onto Florida’s shores and declared the settlement St. Augustine. Now it’s considered the oldest, continuously occupied settlement in the U.S.

Stroll the redbrick streets lined with centuries-old buildings, or hop on an Old Town Trolley tour . The City Gate , built with coquina blocks in 1808, and the González-Alvarez House , the oldest surviving Spanish colonial dwelling in the city, are just two notable points of interest.

Less humidity in the fall means pleasant walks around the historic city and its 42 miles of sandy shores. Go horseback riding on Crescent Beach , or look for shark’s teeth at Mickler’s Landing Beach , known for its pink sand made from crushed coquina.

7 best beach destinations in the world for fall travel

The beach lover's best kept secret? That's easy — offseason anywhere and everywhere is where it's at for maximum vacation enjoyment. After all, who wants to be crammed shoulder to shoulder with other people on the hot sand or marinating in a sea of sunscreen in the water if it can be at all avoided?

Fall temperatures are often a little cooler than July and August — and that's definitely part of the appeal for people who prefer not to sweat it out at the shore. The fall months also bring with them discounted accommodations and lower reward stay redemptions compared to summertime.

Add to that less-crowded biking and hiking trails, easier-to-come-by restaurant reservations and more parking spots within steps of the sand and you'll have plenty of reasons to consider a fall beach vacation.

We've spun the globe to bring you some of the best fall beach destinations — places where you will enjoy mostly empty beaches from destinations in the U.S. to more far-flung seaside locales.

Amelia Island, Florida

Closer to Georgia than the rest of Florida, Amelia Island is part of the Sea Island chain of barrier islands just north of Jacksonville.

It sees more of a change in seasons than the rest of the Sunshine State thanks to its northerly location. It's also an exceptionally family-friendly place to visit, with all kinds of beach and river fun (think shrimping and family sunset cruises) on offer.

There are 13 miles of dune-backed beachfront to explore here, and it's a favorite place to hunt for shark's teeth.

Amelia Island goes big on history, too, with attractions that include the 19th-century fort at Fort Clinch State Park and American Beach, a historic African American community home to Florida's first African American beach resort.

For cyclists, this island is paradise, with over 23 miles of dedicated bike trails to pedal from the beach to the parks. Riptide Watersports can even deliver rental bikes to your hotel. For wildlife — alligators and all kinds of birds — don't miss the Egans Creek Greenway.

SpringHill Suites Amelia Island provides Peloton bikes in its free gym and an outdoor pool, with suites with two queen beds and a pullout sofa starting at 33,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

The grande dame oceanfront resort in these parts is The Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island, with stays from 65,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night. It has an ideal location right next to the beach and bike trails of Fort Clinch State Park.

Virginia Beach, Virginia

During the summer, it seems like everyone from the Washington, D.C., area and Richmond, Virginia, area decamps to Virginia Beach . You'll likely have to jostle for elbow room along the Virginia Beach Boardwalk and have trouble finding a lonely stretch of sand along the 35 miles of beaches here.

By mid-September, however, the bulk of those beach-goers have returned to the office and school and you can enjoy lingering warm autumn weather with far fewer people around.

Head out on a sunset kayak or dolphin tour into the Chesapeake Bay with Chesapean Outdoors or hit the weekly farmers market and go mural spotting in the city's Vibe Creative District. You can also just unfurl your towel with a backdrop of sea oats and rolling waves on lovely Sandbridge Beach.

The brand new Fairfield Inn & Suites Virginia Beach Town Center includes a self-service bar stocked with seasonal and local beers and rooms from 20,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

Also newly opened, the Hyatt Place Virginia Beach/Oceanfront has standard rooms from 17,000 World of Hyatt Points per night.

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama

Roughly 7 million visitors set their sights on Alabama's sliver of coastline in beautiful Gulf Shores and neighboring Orange Beach every year – and lots of them target the lazy days of summer to rent a vacation home along sugar-spun sands.

Plan your visit for September or beyond and you can be practically alone while bathing in the sparkling turquoise waters that are the same hue of coveted blue found just west in the Florida panhandle.

The fall months are a particularly pleasant time to pedal along miles of bike paths and go birding within spectacular Gulf State Park. The park is home to two miles of beachfront, a lake, a campground and 28 miles of trails and boardwalks. It also has a great bike share program, or you can rent from Beach Bike Rentals, right near the entrance to the Rosemary Trail.

The kids will love feeding the giraffes and sloths at Alabama Coast Zoo, where you'll find one of the country's most incredible butterfly collections (donated by a former shrimper).

For a special stay, sleep right in the park at an oceanfront, eco-friendly property, The Lodge at Gulf State Park, a Hilton Hotel. Rooms start at 70,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

The Cape booms with summer tourists, making it a challenge to find somewhere to park your car at the busiest beaches, not to mention enjoy a relaxing moment on the sand.

Come fall, though, it's like a switch suddenly flips. The daylight shadows grow long and lovely, the air turns crisper and you can stroll along sands with more seabirds than people.

The water by the end of September might be too brisk for most to dip into. However, this is a great time to tour a cranberry bog like the one at Annie's Crannies to learn the fascinating harvest techniques, or to go bird-watching at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

For an affordable stay (use the savings for all the local seafood you can eat), book at the Courtyard Cape Cod Hyannis, where award stays start from 40,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

Playa Grande, Costa Rica

Surfers know to save their Costa Rica travels for September, which brings the best promise for solid and uncrowded Pacific Coast waves to the Nicoya Peninsula, sans the summertime masses.

This is also the time to visit Playa Grande's other attractions since summer vacationers have returned to the U.S., Canada and Europe and you can partake in a more serene experience.

Playa Grande Surf Camp offers board rentals as well as group and private lessons that take place at high tide here when the beach break works best. Boogie boarders can always find some white water to ride, too.

Come late October, sea turtle nesting season kicks off at Las Baulas National Marine Park, where leatherback sea turtles return to lay their eggs on the same beaches where they were born.

About 17 miles south of Playa Grande, the JW Marriott Guanacaste Resort & Spa is a favorite family resort with a sprawling, free-form swimming pool. Award nights are available from 34,400 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

Mykonos, Greece

The most famous Greek island for nightlife is best avoided during the scorching hot and overcrowded months of July and August. That's when the picturesque alleys of Chora and Mykonos' sandy southern beaches pack in the masses like so many sweaty sardines.

Plan a trip here for the fall months, however, and you're in for a far more appealing climate and ambiance.

Crowds start to really thin out by late September. October's the sweet spot for still-balmy weather ideal for dining alfresco, hiking and sunbathing (and better all-around value at accommodations, too). It's also a great time to go biking to get rural views of vineyards and the coast.

Opened in 2019, the Aegon Mykonos, Autograph Collection on Kalo Livadi beach has award nights from 50,000 to 70,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

Algarve, Portugal

Hordes of German would-be surfers and van lifers from all over Northern Europe tend to have largely vacated the lovely Algarve region by the time autumn in Portugal rolls around. With daytime temperatures still close to 80 in September and October, it's a fabulous time to linger outside.

Come for wine tasting at spots like Quinta Dos Santos in the western Algarve. Enjoy uncrowded tee times at the many golf courses around Faro (Quinta do Lago's are favorites for water views). Explore the iconic cliffs and beaches around Lagos without the crowds of summer.

Extend Your Beach Season at 6 U.S. Spots to Visit This Fall

Just because the hot summer sun starts to cool doesn’t mean you can’t take a trip to the beach. Smaller crowds, autumn colors and exciting annual fall events are some of the reasons to make a trip to beaches like Biloxi on the Gulf Coast or the vibrant Venice Beach in California. From bird-watching and biking paved trails to enjoying coastal picnic lunches, here are six great stops to consider across the U.S.

As always, check for travel guidelines and closures before planning your trip.

Biloxi Beach, Mississippi

Water sports, fishing and even casinos await on Biloxi Beach, plus delicious seafood. The Mississippi Gulf Coast produces 70 percent of the nation’s oysters and 69 percent of the nation’s domestic shrimp.

You can take The Biloxi Shrimping Trip : a 70-minute marine-life shrimping trip that shows you exactly how shrimp and other marine life end up on your plate.

Reeds Beach, New Jersey

Situated in New Jersey’s Cape May County, Reeds Beach is a quiet coastal retreat perfect for catching the sunset, bird-watching and butterfly watching.

In particular, fall brings migrant birds, including raptors, waterfowl and passerines. You can also walk or bike along the beach and take in some of the dozens of restored historic Victorian homes in the Cape May area, a 30-minute drive from Reeds Beach.

Venice Beach, California

A mecca for bohemian craftspeople, outdoor exercise equipment and street performers, Venice Beach can be enjoyed year-round, with the mild weather of fall in Southern California making it a must-see.

Muscle Beach gym is the iconic outdoor weight room where Arnold Schwarzenegger bulked up, and guests can purchase day passes. Take photos next to some of the beach’s most elaborate graffiti walls, burn calories by walking the 16 miles of human-made canals, or shop for souvenirs or grab a bite at a variety of vendors along the boardwalk.

Driftwood Beach, Georgia

Located right off the coast of Georgia, Jekyll Island is located just an hour from both Savannah, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida, and it’s a brief drive from Atlanta. Driftwood Beach, one of the most interesting destinations in the region, is surrounded by cool blue water and adorned with aged driftwood that gives it the look of an abstract tree graveyard.

In the fall, see the shells of turtle hatchlings on the beach and rent a bike to sail across 20 miles of paved bike trails on the island. The trails meander past Driftwood Beach: Stop for a picnic lunch or take photos where TV show “The Walking Dead” filmed some scenes.

Amelia Island, Florida

Replete with sand dunes, a boardwalk, and public sports and recreation facilities, Main Beach Park, located on Florida’s Amelia Island , is a family-friendly destination perfect for fall exploration — when the weather begins to cool, crowds are fewer and the ocean is still warm.

Guests can enjoy nearby activities like walks in Fort Clinch State Park, shark tooth hunting, wildlife viewing and boat excursions to Cumberland Island in Georgia.

Waikiki Beach, Hawaii

Located on Oahu’s south shore, Waikiki Beach has a good surf season in the fall for beginners. The swells in the fall aren’t as large as the those in the summer, and they are more frequent than during the winter months.

There are also fun annual fall events to check out, including the annual Hawaii Food & Wine Festival , a series of events that attracts internationally renowned master chefs, winemakers and mixologists.

If you’re traveling around Halloween, check out the annual Hallowbaloo Music & Arts Festival , where visitors in costume flock to Chinatown’s streets and participate in live music performances on the outdoor stages.

There are few things—if anything—more quintessentially summer than a day at the beach. But don’t limit your afternoons on the sand to a single season. Sure, the weather and the dropping temperatures that come with the autumn months are something to consider, but a fall beach day offers a special kind of magic. Maybe it’s because there is less traffic and fewer crowds. Perhaps it’s the way the light sits lower in the sky. Or it could be that a sunset dinner reservation is suddenly easier to come by.

3. Go Fishing: Fall is a great time to go fishing because the weather is cooler and the fish are biting! Grab your poles and head out onto the pier for a relaxing day of fishing. You might even catch dinner!

4. Have A Picnic: What better way to enjoy a beautiful fall day than by having a picnic on the beach? Pack your favorite fall foods, like roasted turkey and pumpkin pie, and enjoy them with ocean views. Don’t forget to bring a blanket so you can cozy up afterward!

12. Collect shells : Shell hunting is a fun activity for the whole family. See who can find the most shells, the biggest, or the most colorful ones!

13. Kayaking or Stand Up Paddleboarding : It is one of the best activities you can do in the fall! You can not only get a workout but explore new locations. Though, if you do fall, just remember there is a chance of you getting wet, but it is rare if you lose your footing.

14. Explore the not-so-crowded beach towns: Usually, summer crowds die down come Fall, so it’s the perfect opportunity to explore all those cute beach towns you’ve been meaning to visit. Park your car and walk around, popping into shops and grabbing a bite to eat in between.

15. Go On A Road Trip : Hit up all the best Fall foliage! One of the best things about fall is all the pumpkin-flavored things. Why not take a road trip near the beach such as the Pacific Coast Highway in or near your state? And while you’re at it, you can also hit up some of the best apple orchards!

Best Beaches to visit in the Fall

1. Cannon Beach, Oregon – This beach is well known for its dramatic cliffs, Haystack Rock, and scenic views. It’s the perfect place to go for a nature walk or a picnic. And if you’re lucky, you might even see some whales!

2. Laguna Beach, California – This beach is famous for its beautiful sunsets. So why not enjoy one this fall? Grab a blanket, some snacks, and your loved ones, and head to Laguna Beach for a romantic evening under the stars.

3. Acadia National Park, Maine – This national park is home to some of the most stunning scenery in the country. From its rocky coastline to its lush forests, Acadia National Park is a must-see in the fall. And don’t forget to drive up to Cadillac Mountain for an incredible view!

4. Virginia Beach, Virginia – This beach is perfect for those who want to enjoy some peace. Since it’s off-season, you’ll have the place almost to yourself! So take advantage of it and relax on the beach all day.

5. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina – This beach is great for families. There’s plenty to do, including fishing, playing in the sand, and exploring the boardwalk. Plus, you can find great deals on hotels and restaurants this time of year.

6. Hermosa Beach, California – Hermosa beach is one of the hip towns you have to see. In summer this beach gets super crowded, but the in fall the summer crowds die down. This is a great place to visit!

Descanso Beach: Catalina Island, CA

Harried A-listers and regular families converge on picturesque Catalina in the summer to decompress and experience small-town island life. The fall season on this island, 22 miles off L.A., is just as lively. September sees a slew of festivals, from blues to airplanes to art , film , and wine . But if you’d rather channel that silver screen beachside glamour, hole up at the Descanso Beach Club in the town of Avalon. You can rent a cabana for the day, have lunch on the breezy sea-facing patio, or have a picnic delivered straight to your beach towel. At the end of the day head back to Santa Monica, just an hour away by boat, where you can continue your sea worship at the Oceana Beach Club , a boutique oceanfront hideaway where the outdoor heated pool and fireplace feel custom-made for autumn escapes.

Myrtos Beach: Kefalonia, Greece

When the party-hard summer crowd has departed, the Greek Isles really come into their own, and none more so than stunning Kefalonia, the dreamy setting for Captain Corelli’s Mandolin . Myrtos Beach lies between two mountains, Agia Dynati and Kalon Oros, and is famed for its dazzling white limestone pebbles and pinch-yourself turquoise water, as well as its superlative sunsets over the Ionian Sea. Four miles up the coast, in the sleepy fishing village of Assos, you can tuck into regional dishes such as Kefalonian meat pie and local wine on the plane tree-shaded terrace at the convivial taverna Platanos .

Playa Xcalacoco (Punta Bete): Riviera Maya, Mexico

While the fall months technically coincide with hurricane season in this region, the considerable upsides are that hotels and resorts offer great deals, the beaches are less crowded, and the weather is generally still perfect for swimming. Chances are when you fantasize about a classic Caribbean beach it looks a lot like this stretch south of Cancun: calm, crystal-clear water; pure white sand; and palm trees beneath a flawless blue sky. Playa Xcalacoco (Punta Bete) also happens to service three of Mexico’s most over-the-top resorts: Rosewood , Fairmont and Banyan Tree Mayakoba . In case a day beachside isn’t soothing enough, book time at the Southeast Asian-inspired Banyan Tree Spa , where the Thai-style massages in overwater villas are utterly transporting.

Coral Bay: Cyprus

Thanks to its location in the eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus stays warm and sunny all fall long (expect daytime temps in the 70s through November), and this horseshoe-shaped cove on the island’s west coast is the perfect spot to enjoy your endless summer. There are beach umbrellas, a curve of soft sand, and calm water suitable for the whole family. Afterward, head a little way's south, to the town of Paphos, and look for the adorable hand-painted sign that marks 7 St. George’s , a charming taverna where you can sample top-notch Greek meze: think goat salami, wild asparagus, and fresh seafood. At night bed down at Almyra , a whitewashed oceanfront resort in Paphos where the hip suites have rooftop terraces.

Plage des Salins: St.-Tropez

While this tony French resort town is packed to the gills with Euro aristos all summer, by late September they’ve abandoned the glitzy hotels and big ticket boutiques so we regular folk can move in. Soak up the chill vibe on Plage des Salins (next to the famed Pampelonne but far more sedate); it's backed by grass and pine tree-covered dunes. Settle in at the fine beachside restaurant of the same name, where you can dine on simple Provençal fish dishes while wiggling your toes in the sand. The most scenic way to reach the beach from the center of St.-Tropez is to take Le Sentier du Littoral , a seven-mile track that follows the headlands from the old port area of the village to the Pampelonne beaches. If you’d prefer to rub shoulders with the jetset, time your visit between September 28 and October 6, when the annual regatta, Les Voiles de St.-Tropez , gets underway. The race includes 300 yachts from all over the world and a week of festivities.

Gouverneur Beach: St. Barts

Much like St.-Tropez, its soul sister across the Atlantic, this ultra-glamorous Caribbean hotspot sees nonstop action during the high season—think Maserati and Ferrari gridlock and endless parties full of vacationing supermodels—but it offers a surprisingly low-key vibe during the fall. While pretty much every beach on the island is a winner, Gouverneur is charmant to the extreme. Imagine a sensual curve of golden sand between two fetching rocky headlands and some of the clearest water you’ll ever see. There are no beach chairs or crowds, no restaurants or beach clubs, just pure, wild nature. When it’s time to rejoin society, lay your head down in a Christian Liaigre–designed suite at Le Sereno , with its prime location on Grand Cul-de-Sac Beach, right near the buzzy bar and restaurant scene in Gustavia.

Playa Grande: Costa Rica

Not every beach calls for bikinis and sunscreen. Some, like those within Las Baulas National Marine Park , are worth visiting for their highly Instagrammable flora and fauna. Lovely Playa Grande, set on the country’s Pacific Coast, is surfer heaven, but it’s also an important nesting ground for Kemp's Ridley and leatherback turtles. Visit in the fall to catch the turtles’ nesting season and you may witness up to 800 female leatherbacks laying their eggs in the sand. During the season, travelers can visit only with a park guide on bilingual guided tours (visits are limited to minimize disruption to the turtles). Bunk down at Casa Chameleon , also on the Nicoya Peninsula, where you’ll do the opposite of roughing it in romantic suites with four-poster canopy beds, private infinity pools, and views of the jungle with the Pacific sparkling beyond.

Huntington Beach: South Carolina

If anything, this three-mile-long beach and the state park of which it’s a part only get better once summer is in the rearview mirror. That’s because with the warm weather crowds gone, visitors have a better chance of spotting the many varieties of bird that make this area their home. There’s also a 2,500-square-foot education center nearby that features a saltwater touch tank and a live alligator, and for architecture buffs, the wonderfully wacky Atalaya Castle, the Moorish-style winter home that prominent local couple Anna Hyatt and Archer Huntington built on the oceanfront in the 1930s. Check in at Wild Dunes Resort in nearby Isle of Palms; it's got a Tom Fazio-designed golf course, four pools, and miles of beachfront.

North Fork: Long Island, NY

If the Hamptons aren't your scene but you dig the area’s wild coastal landscapes, head to the North Fork, where autumn brings cooler nights, smaller crowds, and harvest season. Embark on a pilgrimage to some of the state’s best wineries, from the Normandy-style chateau of Duck Walk Vineyards , which offers seasonal wine and cheese pairings, to the artisanal whole bunch-pressed winery of Channing Daughters , where the owners experiment with unusual varieties like Malvasia and Blaufrankisch. For an unusual twist on vineyard hopping, join a " Pour and Pedal ," leisurely daylong bicycle tours that go from winery to winery. Finish the day with a long sunset walk along one of the North Fork’s public beaches, where you’ll encounter miles of fine white sand, secluded dunes, and lighthouses.

Sachuest Beach: Newport, RI

While all those leaf-peepers are sitting in traffic on New England’s highways, you should make for the coast. Beaches like Newport’s Sachuest (known by locals as Second Beach) become peaceful havens of autumnal atmosphere. Just a mile and a half long, this beach is popular with surfers thanks to its clean, seaweed-free water and good wave action. Norman Bird Sanctuary , a 325-acre wildlife preserve overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, is right next door. When you’ve had your fill of birds and beaches, warm up at Forty 1 North , a swell boutique hotel overlooking Narragansett Bay with a restaurant that serves classic New England grub like lobster rolls and clam chowder.

Fall is a great time to visit the beach.

With the arrival of autumn, the crowds are gone, prices are low, and cooler temps mean you don’t have to wear a bathing suit! In fall, I love a long stroll on the shore or planting a chair in the sand and losing myself in a great book. Paired with low hotel rates and less busy restaurants, I say there’s a great argument for saving your beach vacation until fall. Here are four of the best beaches for fall.

Ogunquit, ME  

People tend to think of Maine as a summer destination, but there’s just as many fun things to do here in the fall. The water might be a bit chilly to frolic in the waves, but there’s still plenty of water activities that don’t require getting wet. Try kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, or maybe even surfing (they make wetsuits for a reason!). If you prefer land-bound activities, a leisurely walk on the beach, a game of frisbee, or reading a book on the sand is great this time of year—less crowds means a more low-key, relaxing experience. Who doesn’t love that?

The beach isn’t the only reason to visit Maine in the fall. For foliage lovers, the colors here start to change in September, and peak in October. Love seafood? Excellent—fall is prime lobster season in Maine! And even better, Ogunquit celebrates Capriccio for two weeks every fall. This autumn celebration showcases local art, music, and hosts an annual kite flying festival.

Nantucket, MA

A summer vacation in Nantucket sounds delightful to just about everyone. And because of that, crowds swell– 10,000 people live here year-round, but the populations is about five times that in the summer!– and price tags soar. Personally, I think there’s a lot a reasons to wait until fall to hit up this 19 th Century whaling hub. Once the kids head back to school, this charming island calms down substantially. Stroll down quiet beaches, visit Sankaty Head Lighthouse, and tour Nantucket on bicycle (Young’s and Island Bike Co are two of a few rental companies on the island).

Fall also means there’s no need to spend an hour queued up outside the Nautilus (an Asian fusion spot with fantastic craft cocktails), and charming B&Bs, like the Brass Lantern , boast non-bank-breaking prices. With an easy ferry ride from Cape Cod, it’s an excellent choice for a fall getaway.

Hilton Head, SC

This is beach is popular year-round, but lesser so in the fall. I’d use the word “fall” loosely here; the October daytime temperatures average about 77 degrees. Not too shabby! As for most beach vacations, occupancy hits a major low in the last few months of the year (with the exception of Thanksgiving and Christmas). That means great hotel rates, and beautiful beaches all to yourself.

As for things to do, there’s no shortage, especially for food lovers. Oyster season kicks off in September, so if you’re into that sort of thing, there will be plenty of places to enjoy them. The Salty Dog and the Old Oyster Factory are stalwarts on the island, but for something a little hipper, try the Lucky Rooster . Here, they fry oysters in cornmeal and serve them with okra, citrus herb spice and black pepper aioli. Yum!

Traverse City, MI

With its rich blue waters, white sand dunce beaches and nothing but water on the horizon, it’s easy to see why Traverse City is called the Caribbean of the North. Autumn is a great time to explore this beautiful beach town. Due to the lake effect, daytime temperatures hover around 70 in September, which means an afternoon at the beach is much more pleasant than you’d probably expect. Brave folks are known to take a dip in Lake Michigan well into September!

If you love the fall colors (who doesn’t?), this great lakes destination offers some of the most incredible vistas for fall foliage. A great place to experience this is at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Hike or bike along the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, a 27-mile paved path.

Ocean City, MD. Is lovely this time of year especially when the End of Summer festival takes place. Lots going on.

Anywhere on the gulf coast of Florida is great. Crowds are gone, weather is still warm, seafood is phenomenal!

Agree about the panhandle of Florida (provided there’s no hurricane in the forecast !)- I organized a fabulous ‘gal pal reunion’ a couple of years ago in early November, on St. George Island, just off the coast from Apalachicola. Gorgeous, peaceful place with a fine State Park brimming with natural, snow-white sand dunes; & a historic lighthouse. Visit Apalachicola, too; it is a quaint town, with NO high rises (I love that !). It has a historic hotel; and lots of shops to browse in.

Outer Banks of NC Most of Florida beaches

National Seashore on Cape Cod.

Jersey Shore in September and October can’t be beat.

As a Michigan native, we love Traverse City in the summer and fall. I want everyone to know that they do not have “dunce” beaches! Sleeping Bear area has beautiful white sand dunes. Can you tell I proofread for a living? LOL Just had to tease you Samantha. Love your show!

Delbert, I was going to say the same thing. The Oregon Coast is beautiful anytime but the Fall is wonderful. No crowds, not too foggy (due to no heat of summer inland), and no snow/ice yet. Some of most memorable visits have been in the Fall.

Northern California is spectacular, too, for similar reasons as Oregon’s. The have the Redwoods not too far away, also, so you can take them in while visiting there.

So, Samantha – get Oregon and Northern California added to the list. Oh wait! Maybe not. If they’re on your list, everyone will want to go there. 😉

Navarro River meets the Pacific. Great Beach, hi way 128 @ coastal hi way 1 . Eighty miles or so north of the Golden Gate Bridge (101) from Cloverdale a drive to the coast. Stop in Yorkville for pickniking on the beach. Great wines at Disco Ranch in Boonville. Wine country tasting in Anderson Valley, farther on an incredible drive through the Redwoods. Turn left over the bridge then right to the beach.

Pismo Beach

The Oregon Coast is uncrowded in the fall? Try getting a campsite in any of the state parks or Forest Service Campgrounds. The days of uncrowded shoulder seasons are long gone!

San Diego North County coast is fantastic in the fall particularly Cardiff By the Sea beach. All restored habitat in the San Elijo Lagoon and wide fresh sand beach for us to enjoy.

I like Baker Beach in the Presidio of San Francisco with the back drop of the cliffs and the Golden Gate Bridge, Santa Cruz beach for surfing, and Monastery Beach in Carmel for scuba diving.

Carpinteria, CA is the most gorgeous in the fall!

Pemaquid Beach, Maine. One of the few sandy beaches in Maine. Also has the best lighthouse, Fort and pre Jamestown village archeological dig nearby.

Oregon Coast is always a great beach area to visit.

The beaches of Olympic National Park, in Washington State. There are 50 miles of designated Wilderness beaches, but some are quite accessible by car, including Kalaloch, Ruby and Rialto beaches.

Door County WI!! Miles of beaches around the peninsula. Gorgeous sunrises over Lake Michigan and sunset views over Green Bay. And you can choose a sandy beach or pebble beach (great for skipping stones). Plus the autumn trees!!! 😍

I always go to Ft Myers in October. No Crowds, Still ubber Warm Weather and there’s something in the air. I don’t get to go every year, and only once did I miss a Hurricane that came up on shore in front of my Condo!

I agree with Jeff Norman. Drive the Olympic Loop, Hwy. 101 to experience beautiful, rugged scenery and the peace of fewer people. Sample local brew pubs and native Dungeness crab along the way. Research brochures about Olympic National Park for an advance look.

We used to spend our anniversary (Oct 10) in the Traverse City area every year. We brought both our golf, and ski equipment, because the weather made either possible. Now we stick to the best beach year round, Pass-a-Grille in St. Pete.

Henlopen State Park in Delaware, both the Lewes Area and Gordon’s Pond. President Biden would agree with me.

No one ever mentions Hawaii. I live on the North Shore of Oahu and in the fall the tourists have thinned out, the weather is a perfect 80 and soft trade winds keep the days perfect. Big waves arrive in October and the surfers arrive.

Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Easily one of the best fall destinations in the US, Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado is perfect for anyone who loves the great outdoors and wants to see some amazing fall foliage.

If possible, travelers should plan their visit for late September or early October . This way you can take a scenic drive along Trail Ridge Road and Bear Lake Road and enjoy the stunning aspens all around you.

Just be aware that Trail Ridge Road closes in mid-October. So, do try to time your visit prior to this since this route is easily one of the most scenic drives in Colorado .

However, other great places to see these gorgeous, golden-hued aspens include Fern Lake Trail, the Bear Lake area, the Cub Lake Trail, the East Inlet Trail, and Kawuneeche Valley.

And while hiking, be on the lookout for local elk populations that start to migrate from higher elevations to local meadows for mating season. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to hear the eerie call of male elk in the background.

Finally, head back to nearby Estes Park and spend the night at The Inn on Fall River . After all, this property has a bunch of cozy log cabins that overlook the nearby river and have a fun mountain aesthetic about them. For something more secluded, book a vacation rental near the park.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Looking for one of the best fall destinations in the US? If so, then you can’t beat Philadelphia since this historic city comes alive with fun fall activities. 

So, start by enjoying Halloween Night at Eastern State Penitentiary . It’s an amazing immersive experience where you can stroll through the cellblocks and check out haunted houses, themed bars/lounges, and more. 

You can also explore the trails at Fairmount Park before seeing some amazing foliage at Rittenhouse Square, Washington Square West, and Old City.

Expect average daytime temperatures of 47 F and lots of rain. While southeast Alaska is wet in the fall, there’s not much risk of snow until late October.

Newport, Rhode Island is an ideal fall destination in the United States. It is situated on Aquidneck Island and is well known for its serene beaches and cliffs . The fewer crowds in autumn make it a great place to enjoy outdoor activities, historic museums, and delicious foods.

The Cliff Walk is a great way to view the local history. It offers a 3.5-mile walk , which can be done in parts or as a whole. Blue Ridge Parkway Fall Road Trip

“I love Cape Cod any time of year, but autumn is extra special. The crowds of tourists have gone back to work, the summering students have returned to school, and the locals have begun to settle into their off-season routine.

“After Labor Day, many East Coast beaches, like Mayflower Beach in Dennis, loosen their dog restrictions. One of my favorite ways to spend a fall morning is to walk along the quiet beach with my dog happily chasing seagulls. It is one of those special moments — joyful and contemplative.

“Although thought of as a summer destination, Virginia Beach can be enjoyed in the fall. After Labor Day, vacation crowds have thinned out, water becomes a little cooler, and beaches on the South end of the East Coast are quieter. For me, this is an ideal time.

“ Hanging Rock State Park  is 30 miles north of Winston-Salem. The park has more than 7,000 acres set in the Sauratown Mountains. Peaks here reach 2,500 feet. Many of the trails here are moderate to strenuous, but there are a couple of ‘easy’ trails for strolling. The lake has great picture-taking angles. “ Amelia Island is the perfect fall getaway on the East Coast. It is a gorgeous location year round, but in fall, you have a very tranquil, uncrowded beach with lots of wide-open outdoor space.

“A barrier island just off the coast of northeast Florida, you will find your own little piece of paradise when you visit in the fall. The soft white sand won’t burn your feet, the pristine water is still warm, and the crowds are gone. The temperature in fall is in the 70s up to mid-80s.

“Historic downtown showcases some excellent specialty shops, eateries with all kinds of cuisines, the oldest bar in Florida, and more. Abundant outdoor activities include fishing, sailing, biking, hiking, golfing, and horseback riding on the beach. Take a historic tour or hit the spa. I just love walking on the beach and reading a book while sitting by the ocean. You can relax and savor the quiet and the wonders of the East Coast nature.

17. The Florida Keys

“Fall is a special time to visit the East Coast Florida Keys . The heat is less oppressive, the crowds are smaller, and there are lots of events planned to lure visitors during this normally slow time of the year on the East Coast.

“ Fantasy Fest in Key West draws the biggest crowds. It’s highlighted by outrageous events and costumes, body painting, and lots of alcohol. The nine-day non-stop party in October is decidedly LGBTQ-friendly. There is a clothing-optional pool party for men. Women are encouraged to ‘ Rock the Tatas ,’ with the best tatas winning a $500 prize. Just about every bar in town has live music every night. This is not the place for bashful people.

“Things are a little tamer elsewhere in the Keys. Key Largo hosts REEF Fest in October, with sports diving on the offshore reef. In November you’ll find true gluttony at the Stone Crab Claw eating contest in Marathon. The Islamorada Sailfish Tournament is the first week in December.

18. North Conway, New Hampshire

North Conway, a picturesque village located in the town of Conway is a place I love visiting in the summer. But the fall season is stunningly beautiful there, and there’s still plenty to do. To put it simply, in North Conway, you will get a complete New Hampshire fall package. From scenic train rides and historic general stores to massive corn mazes and all the apple cider and donuts you can consume, you’ll experience everything. 

It’s a very good destination for the outdoorsy types, although, with the lack of sales tax, I find that shopping in Settlers Green Outlet Village is an ever-growing attraction.

It’s also the start (or end) point of the San Gabriel River Trail, a 36-mile long cycle route that’s one of the best traffic-free spots in the valley for biking.
