Our adventure begins in the historic heart of Istanbul , once the thriving capital of the Byzantine Empire. From there, we will journey to the storied grounds of Troy and walk in the footsteps of legends. Our exploration will lead us to the sacred biblical city of Ephesus , offering a glimpse into ancient Christian heritage.

The journey will then take us to the surreal, wind-sculpted terrains of Cappadocia , a region adorned with rock-cut sanctuaries and ancient underground cities. We will delve into the roots of human settlement at Catalhuyuk , one of the earliest urban centers known to history, where communities thrived as far back as 7,000 B.C.

Our exploration continues to the majestic Mount Nemrut , a site often hailed as the eighth wonder of the ancient world, where colossal god-like statues gaze eternally over the horizon. The pinnacle of our journey is the awe-inspiring Gobekli Tepe , celebrated as the world's first temple. The highlight of our tour will be the renowned Gobekli Tepe, considered to be the oldest temple ever discovered . Unveiled relatively recently, this site predates the end of the last Ice Age, boasting an age of approximately 12,000 years. Gobekli Tepe stands as one of the most pivotal and astounding archaeological finds in recent history. Its construction predates other ancient megalithic sites like Stonehenge and the Egyptian Pyramids by millennia, redefining our understanding of early human civilization.

The uncovering of Gobekli Tepe has shifted the narrative of early advanced societies, indicating that long before the rise of Mesopotamia and Egypt, an enigmatic civilization was erecting monumental structures in what is now Turkey. DAY 1 - ARRIVAL IN ISTANBUL

Upon arrival in Turkey, you will be warmly greeted by a representative from Archaeological Paths at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport. You will then be transferred to ayou will have the opportunity to relax and unwind from the journey. The evening will feature a delightful dinner, followed by a restful overnight stay at the hotel, setting the stage for the adventures that await in Istanbul.

DAY 2 - Istanbul  - The Old City

Istanbul - one of the greatest cities in the world, capital of the Byzantine Empire.

Following breakfast, our journey will commence from the hotel towards the enchanting Sultanahmet distric t, renowned as the "historical peninsula" of Istanbul. Our exploration begins with the mesmerizing remnants of the Ottoman Empire, leading us to the illustrious Blue Mosque . This architectural marvel, famed for its intricate craftsmanship, boasts over 20,000 handmade ceramic tiles and 200 radiant stained glass windows, representing the pinnacle of Islamic art.

Our cultural odyssey continues at the Topkapi Palace , the first palace built by the Ottomans in Istanbul, where we'll admire an array of stunning Ottoman artworks. Subsequently, we'll enjoy a delightful lunch in the vicinity of the Blue Mosque. Post-lunch, our itinerary includes a visit to the majestic St. Sophia Museum (Hagia Sophia), a beacon of Byzantine architecture that once served as an Orthodox cathedral and a mosque.

DAY 3 - Troy & Canakkale

On day 3, we will embark on a scenic drive to Troy, traversing the European territory known as "Thrace." Our journey will lead us to Eceabat, where we'll relish lunch by the picturesque waterside before boarding a ferry across the Dardanelles to reach Canakkale on the Asian side of Turkey.

In the afternoon, we'll delve into the rich history of ancient Troy , a city steeped in both history and myth, immortalized in the Greek Epic Cycle and notably in Homer's Iliad. During our exploration, we'll wander through the remarkably preserved ruins, gaining insights into the lives of its ancient inhabitants. Additionally, we'll encounter a replica of the iconic Trojan Horse, symbolizing the ingenuity and intrigue of the legendary siege.

Our day of historical discovery will conclude with an overnight stay at the hotel in Assos Dove , offering a moment of tranquility and reflection on the timeless narratives that have unfolded in this storied region.

DAY 4 - Pergamon, Ephesus & Selcuk

Embark on a journey to Pergamon , nestled within the contemporary city of Bergama. Our visit to Pergamon will commence with a cable car ride ascending the mountain to explore the ancient Acropolis, offering a glimpse into its storied past and architectural marvels.

Subsequently, we will journey to the illustrious city of Ephesus , where we will be greeted by the exceptionally well-preserved remnants of a Hellenistic-Early Roman age metropolis. Ephesus holds a special place in Christian history, being where St. Paul once resided and delivered his teachings. We'll stroll through its ancient streets, marveling at the historical and architectural wonders that have withstood the test of time.

The day's exploration will culminate with an overnight stay at a hotel in Kusadasi , providing a serene end to a day steeped in the rich tapestry of ancient civilization.

DAY 5 - Dalyan and Kaunos

In the morning, our adventure continues as we set off to the enchanting region of Dalyan , a place renowned for its natural beauty and historical significance. From here, we will embark on a two-hour boat journey that will take us close to the evocative ruins of Kaunos , once a bustling ancient port strategically positioned at the Dalyan river delta.

The journey along the river will reveal the awe-inspiring sight of rock-cut tombs etched into the riverbanks, dating back to the 9th century B.C. or possibly earlier. En route, we will have the privilege of visiting the Mevlana Museum , the iconic sanctuary of the Whirling Dervishes. This museum is not merely a repository of relics; it stands as a testament to Turkey's profound mystical and religious traditions, capturing the essence of Sufism and offering insights into the lives of its devout practitioners.

Once we arrive in Konya and enjoy a local lunch, our journey will continue to the Catalhoyuk ruins , an archaeological marvel that offers a window into one of the world's earliest known cities, dating back almost 10,000 years. DAY 10 – Mount Nemrut

After enjoying our morning meal, we will depart from the hotel and set off towards Nemrut (Kahta), embarking on a journey filled with historical intrigue and cultural encounters. Along the way, we'll pause at the Karatayhan Caravanserai, an exemplar of Seljuk architecture that whispers tales from the ancient Silk Road.

Our journey will continue with a flavorful interlude in Kahramanmaras , a city celebrated for its unique Turkish ice cream crafted from goat's milk, offering a delightful gastronomic experience. Following our lunch and break, we'll proceed to Kahta , where we'll check into our hotel, setting the stage for an evening expedition.

The highlight of our day will be an evening ascent to the summit of Mount Nemrut , a site that commands awe and wonder, justly compared to the wonders of the ancient world. The mountain, peaking at about 2000 meters, hosts the enigmatic remnants of the Commagene Kingdom, which flourished in the 1st century B.C. Following breakfast, we will proceed to check out of the hotel and embark on our journey to Urfa , a city steeped in history and culture. En route, we will witness the grandeur of Turkey's largest dam on the Euphrates River, a marvel of modern engineering that showcases the country's progress in harnessing natural resources.

Our voyage will then lead us to the intriguing town of Harran , renowned for its unique Arabic culture, vibrant inhabitants, and historical legacy, including ancient structures and a significant Islamic university. Harran offers a rich array of cultural and architectural heritage, inviting us to delve into its storied past.

The day's journey continues to Göbekli Tepe , an archaeological site of immense historical significance. These historic pools, interwoven with a labyrinth of canals, are home to countless sacred carp, nurtured and revered by the locals. The tranquil atmosphere and the cultural significance of the pools offer a unique opportunity to experience the local traditions and beliefs.

Our exploration will continue with a visit to the Cave of Abraham , a site imbued with profound spiritual significance. According to local lore, this cave is the birthplace of the prophet Abraham, making it a poignant destination for reflection and appreciation of the region's religious heritage.

In the afternoon, we will enrich our understanding of the area's ancient history with a visit to the Urfa Archeology Museum . Here, we will encounter an array of fascinating artifacts that unveil the richness of the region's past. Among these treasures are remarkable stone sculptures and a unique object reminiscent of a totem pole, all unearthed at Göbekli Tepe. These artifacts provide a tangible connection to the distant past and underscore the sophistication of early human societies.

DAY 13 - Urfa - Istanbul, Bosphorus cruise

Following breakfast, we will conclude our stay in Urfa by checking out of the hotel and transferring to the Urfa airport for our flight back to Istanbul. Upon arrival and check-in at our hotel in Istanbul , guests will be afforded some leisure time. This interval offers a perfect opportunity for relaxation, indulging in some shopping, or independently exploring the vibrant streets and rich cultural tapestry of Istanbul at their own pace.

As the evening unfurls, we will embark on a private boat cruise along the Bosphorus Strait , an experience that promises to be both enchanting and memorable. The cruise offers a unique vantage point to appreciate the juxtaposition of Istanbul's European and Asian skylines, historic landmarks, and the bustling life along the strait's shores.

The highlight of the evening will be our farewell dinner aboard the boat, set against the backdrop of a breathtaking Istanbul sunset. This special moment will provide an ideal setting to reflect on our journey's experiences and toast to our shared memories.

Our day concludes with an overnight stay in Istanbul, rounding off a day that beautifully marries relaxation, exploration, and celebratory camaraderie.

DAY 14 - Departure from Istanbul

After enjoying our final breakfast together, the time will come for warm goodbyes as we cherish the memories and friendships forged during our journey. We will check out of the hotel and proceed to the airport, where we will embark on our respective flights back home. As we depart, we carry with us not only souvenirs and photographs but also a wealth of experiences and insights gained from our exploration of Turkey's rich tapestry of history, culture, and natural beauty. We bid each other farewell, with hopes that our paths may cross again in future adventures. Safe travels to all!

We run a daily tour, departing at 10am from Dingle town. Tours take up to 3.5 hours with a minimum of 4 people and a maximum of 12 people.

Tour Introduction

This comprehensive archaeological tour of the Bay of Naples and the events of AD79 not only includes the well-known and impressive remains of Pompeii and the superbly preserved Herculaneum but also those lesser known, but nonetheless important sites such as the seaside villas of the wealthy at Oplontis, possibly once owned by Poppeia, wife of the Emperor Nero; Stabiae, where the frescoes are amongst the most beautiful found anywhere in the world; Cumae, the first Greek colony on the Italian mainland; Baiae, a fashionable Roman seaside resort, and Pozzuoli, the main port of the early Roman Empire.

When Vesuvius erupted, pyroclastic debris was hurled more than twenty miles into the atmosphere, engulfing the entire Bay of Naples and beyond, killing thousands of people. Pompeii was not the only city to be destroyed - the inhabitants of all the neighbouring Roman resort cities, including Herculaneum and Stabiae, were also completely obliterated. The devastation wrought and the way the volcanic ash sealed and preserved everything it engulfed, has fascinated visitors since the first archaeological investigations at Pompeii in 1748. The fact that it has been the most famous archaeological site in the world for so long means that centuries' worth of repairs and restorations have added their own overlay to the Roman originals. Modern day archaeologists have to sift through not only layers of dust and ash to interpret this large city but also the theories and presumptions of the excavators that went before them.

Day 1: Naples Fly London to Naples. Drive to our four-star hotel in Pompeii for six nights. Welcome drink and dinner. (B)

Day 2: Paestum Spend the day exploring the heart of the ancient city of Poseidonia. The most dramatic sights are the three Doric temples; roofless, but still standing, these are among the greatest archaeological monuments in Italy. In the afternoon we visit the Museum which contains paintings and grave goods from tombs in and around Paestum. The most famous of these is the fresco from the 'Tomb of the Diver', the only extant wall-painting from a Greek tomb. (B,D)

Day 3: Cumae, Baiae and Pozzuoli A day exploring the area west of Naples known as The Phlegraean Fields. Cumae, the epicentre of the Greek colonization of the 8th Century BC; Baiae, the home of pleasure palaces of Roman emperors; the Castello Aragonese which now houses the Archaeological Museum of the Campi Flegrei; and Pozzuoli, with its impressive amphitheatre begun by Roman Emperor Nero and finished by Vespasian. Day 4: Pompeii A whole day in Pompeii exploring the public monuments and private residences that best illustrate what life was like in this bustling port and market town. The fountains in the street, worn where thousands of people have rested to take a drink, the stepping stones, wheel ruts, corner shrines, bakeries, public baths, the brothel, street cafés and ancient graffiti – all of human life in AD79 is here when you know where to look for it. Dinner at your own expense this evening. (B)

Day 5: Herculaneum During the eruption of Vesuvius, the buildings of Herculaneum were smothered by toxic gas and boiling mud which, as it solidified, prevented their collapse. Subsequently sealed under an airtight layer of volcanic rock, the partially excavated town now offers a unique insight into Roman life, with many buildings still with upper storeys intact and frescoes and mosaics in an excellent state of preservation. In the afternoon, we drive up the slopes of Vesuvius, taking the final stage to the summit on foot (a walk of around 200m). (B,D)

Day 6: Stabiae and Oplontis Ancient Stabiae, founded between the 7th and 6th Centuries BC, was one of the places chosen by the aristocracy of Rome to build their large luxury villas in a panoramic position on the edge of Varano Hill. It was here that Pliny the Elder met his death, probably during the last fatal surge of the pyroclastic cloud. We visit three impressive houses today - Villa San Marco, Villa Arianna and the Villa of Poppea at Oplontis, a grand residential building on an imperial scale, with a huge pool, and cleverly designed gardens. Day 7: Naples The National Archaeological Museum, great treasure trove of the Bay of Naples and home of one of the most important collections of classical archaeology in the world. Among the notable exhibits are the Herculaneum papyri, carbonized by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the Alexander Mosaic, originally from the House of the Faun in Pompeii. Transfer to Naples for return flights home. (B)

Oliver Gilkes is an archaeologist and researcher who has specialised in the Mediterranean. He worked as a museum curator and field archaeologist in the UK and taught at the University of East Anglia. Oliver has led archaeological projects in Italy, where he worked for the British School at Rome, and Albania at the Unesco World Heritage Site of Butrint and the Ottoman ‘stone city’ of Gjirokastra.

Tour Description

Join Monticello staff for a 90-minute walking tour into the woodlands to explore how we use archaeology to better understand the plantation and the lives of those who lived and labored here. Guests will see artifacts while learning about both the work of archaeology and the history of this land beginning with ancestral Monacan Indians through the Jeffersonian era and up to today.

Please Note the Following:

• Recommended for adults and children age 7 and older
• This tour follows a historic road with some areas of uneven terrain and covering two-thirds of a mile roundtrip. It is not recommended for guests with mobility limitations.
• In severe weather, the tour may be canceled.
• Reservations and tickets are valid only on the date specified. There will be no refunds unless the tour is canceled by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation.

Roundtrip airfare between home and Lima, Peru (LIM), is not included. In-program flights are included in the tour (cost subject to change). A group airport transfer will be provided for those arriving in Lima (LIM) on September 9 th . Please arrive by 8:30 pm to join the group arrival transfer. If you arrive earlier in the day and prefer to book a private transfer, that can be arranged for additional cost. Check-in at the Pullman Lima Miraflores Hotel is at 12:00 pm. On September 24 th , the group flight from Cuzco to Lima will arrive in the late afternoon. Connecting flights should depart after 8:30 pm that evening.

Passport and Visa:

A passport is required for this program. Please be sure your passport is valid for at least six months after the end of the tour . Check your passport to make sure that it has sufficient space for entry and exit stamps with at least one blank page , not including the amendment and endorsement pages.

Visas for U.S. citizens are free and issued at the port of entry. If you are not a U.S. citizen check with the consulates nearest you for applicable regulations and requirements.

Final Mailing

Your final mailing will be emailed approximately two weeks prior to departure. This will include last-minute instructions, luggage tags, a participant list, contact information, etc. You will also receive a mailed package with your name badge and luggage tags.

NOTE: If you are leaving your home prior to the group departure date, please contact me immediately so that I can make sure you receive your final packet before you depart.

The Michael and Sara Moskau Institute of Archaeology and the Center for Archaeological Research serves to encourage the scholarly development and research of the seminary faculty and students, seeking to train and inspire a new generation of biblical scholars to engage in current research in the disciplines of biblical archaeology and biblical studies.  New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary has a long history of involvement in Biblical Archaeology. For over half a century, seminary professors have served as directors and field supervisors for students who have participated in various archaeological research and field schools such as Aphek, Beersheba, Tel Masos, Batash-Timnah, Tel Qasile, Tel Beth Shean, Tel Rehov, Tel Gezer, and now Tel Hadid. Excavations have also been carried out at Sepphoris, unearthing the First-century water reservoir. The current leadership team brings a wealth of experience and direction to the archaeology program at NOBTS. In the Summer of 2018, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary completed the excavation of Tel Gezer Water System Project in Israel and began a new dig at Tel Hadid in partnership with the Tel Aviv University. The Center also hosts the Manuel Family Lectureship on Archaeology and the Bible and is having a lectureship series on the Archaeology of Ancient Israel. An announcement of future Manuel Family Lectureships will be forthcoming. The excavation project will be housed at Neve Shalom. The Neve Shalom/Wahat al-Salam (Oasis of Peace) Guest House is part of a unique community in which Jews and Arabs have chosen to live side by side. The students and staff will stay in the various double and quad rooms on the hotel grounds. These suites will be within a short walking distance of the excavation dighouse where all the lectures and processing of finds will take place. This pga tour golf course is getting revamped bunkers — and a 1986 feel, share this article.

Tim Liddy says the renovation of all 18 green complexes at the Pete Dye Stadium Course at PGA West is like an archaeological dig. In this case, Liddy and the agronomy team at PGA West are looking for the original greens on the golf course from 1986.

“The thing that I have struggled with that we got through with the owner is do you want a 1986 Pete or do you want a 2020 Pete,” said Liddy, who worked closely with the famed architect Dye for many years and is helping to return the course to its original concept of greens and bunkering. “They said we want a 1986 Pete. So that tells me, okay, that’s not what he would have done today, but it’s what we did in 1986.”

The renovation of all 18 greens as well as the practice putting area at the Stadium Course, the host course of the PGA Tour’s The American Express tournament each January, means the course will be closed throughout the summer.

Plans are to renovate more than 12 acres of turf and bunkers on the course in time for the course to reopen after a normal overseed in the fall, meaning the course will be ready for The American Express.

This summer is the completion of a three-year renovation project at the Stadium Course that saw work on fairways and the removal of trees that had grown drastically in the nearly 40 years since the golf course opened as one of the most talked about and controversial courses in the country.

Dye’s extensive use of water, railroad ties, spectator mounding and a variety of bunkers from pot bunkers to moats caused criticism from players in the 1986 American Express, then called the Bob Hope Classic. But much of what Dye designed into the La Quinta course is now standard at many PGA Tour courses and even resort courses.

“He was ahead of his time,” Liddy said. “My impression was he saw the golf ball was getting longer and the driver was getting bigger and the players were getting more talented, more athletic. I think he foresaw all of that.”

The PGA Tour left the Stadium Course after that one playing in 1986, but the course returned to the tournament in 2016 as host course.

In the 38 years since the players grumbled in 1986, the courses have naturally changed. Liddy, director of agronomy Brian Sullivan, resort courses superintendent Denver Hart and a construction team from LeBar Golf Renovations want to take the course back to when it opened.

A large part of the project involves shaving at least four inches of turf off of the greens, material that simply builds up through the years, to find the original green surfaces. Then the team searches for the metal liners that defined the original edges of the greens, allowing the team to expand the current greens to 1986 sizes. In some cases, that’s as much as a 20-percent increase in size, meaning more room for pin placements.

“The green surfaces will be 143,000 square feet,” Hart said. “The putting green alone will be 23,000 square feet.”

Liddy said the team will do very little reshaping of the surfaces, leaving slopes and valleys the way they were first meant to be.

“It has surprised me the most that once we take off that four inches, they are really close (to original),” Liddy said of the greens. “We’ve not really changed any of them.”

Other changes will be seen throughout the course. Liddy said the entire front of the 10th green had disappeared, perhaps an attempt by some past owner to cut down on maintenance costs.

Ben Dobbs, executive director at PGA West, said many greens will be taken as close as possible to water hazards and railroad ties, such as to the left of the demanding par-3 13th.

“Seventeen (the famed island green par-3) is going to get bigger. We are going a lot bigger,” Dobbs said. “It’s pretty cool, because when we took the four to five inches of organic material off the top, what it did, and you can see it, is it brought the rocks back into play. Before, that green sat up on top and the rocks were around but had fallen off to the side. So now you kind of have this teeth and this jagged look back.”

For most of the bunkering around the greens, Liddy said the bunker surfaces will be flat, a concept Dye liked, rather than the sloping bunkers that have evolved on the course over four decades.

“What I mean when I say flat, it’s not flat, but the sand doesn’t flash up,” Liddy said. “As unnatural as it looks, it’s following mother nature. You’d have water, you would have a layer of a beach, then a layer of ground. So you have layers he is developing to give you that beautiful look.”

Sullivan said he believes the tifeagle Bermuda grass that will be planted on the greens and the TifTuf Bermuda grass for planted areas around the greens – from Evergreen Turf in Arizona – will complete the renovation.

“We think we have the better construction group and the better material,” Sullivan said.

The Stadium Course is the sixth of the nine PGA West courses to undergo renovation of greens in recent years, and it means that all three courses used in The American Express have put in renovated greens in the last few years. La Quinta Country Club completed a green renovation last summer, and the Nicklaus Tournament Course at PGA West was done three years ago.

The PGA Tour is constantly monitoring the work on tour courses like the Stadium Course, said Pat McCabe, executive director of The American Express.

“You look at this week they are playing in Colonial (in Fort Worth, Texas), and I don’t know what the extent of that project was, but it was pretty massive. They shut it down right after the tournament (in 2023). I don’t think (the Stadium Course) is quite to the level of restoration that Gil Hanse and his team did at Colonial. But they were ready for this year’s tournament.

“Anytime you are ripping up dirt, you are cognizant that there is a risk,” McCabe added. “But my understanding is PGA West has the best group in town in LeBar to help them. Brian Sullivan, being the superintendent that he is and his knowledge of what needs to be done, leading the charge is fantastic. It shows the commitment of ownership.”
