from Portugal, Aug 2024

Dear friends. I was on vacation in Mongolia in August. I would like to sincerely thank our guides; Amra and Sanja, their vast culture, all the explanations and teachings they gave us, all the teachings about the history and culture of Mongolia. I would also like to thank you for your great friendliness and education, the professionalism, competence and joy with which you showed us your wonderful country. Sincere regards, Rui Munhoz.

From australia, may 2024.

Our trip to Mongolia was truly memorable. Crystal communicated throughout the booking and provide updates and advice prior to our trip. We even managed to share a coffee with her on our trip back to the airport. But, that is the challenge of traveling, and our guide Zayaa, easily juggled the itinerary to work around the delays. Come with an open mind and let Crystal and her team show you what Mongolia has to offer.

Mongolia Tours & Vacations

Tsagaan Khad Tourist Ger Camp, with yurt tents on Jargalant Khairkhan, Mongolia

Landing in the concrete jungle of Ulaanbaatar, you might wonder where Mongolia keeps its famous wide-open spaces.

But just wait until you catch your first glimpse of sunrise over the famous Mongolian steppe. There’s no other view on Earth quite like it: mile after mile of rolling grassy plains, dotted with the white domes of gers and broken up with golden dunes or the craggy peaks of Tavan Bogd and the Altai mountains. It’s probably no surprise that our Mongolia tours are mostly about the getting out into the wild – soaking in the hot springs of Tsenkher or hiking through the Khogno Khan – but you’ll find there’s more to this country than just good views. With its epic history, brief communist past and a (proudly) democratic future, Mongolia is ready to greet the 21st century with plenty to offer the traveler.

Best time to visit mongolia.

Mongolia has an extreme continental climate due to its inland location. The best time for traveling is from May to October when the weather is pleasant. Due to the popularity of the Naadam Festival, July is the busiest time to go; it can get crowded, but Ulaanbaatar buzzes with an incredible vibe during this time.

The wet season is from July to August and although it rains frequently during this time, the rain turns the countryside into a pleasant shade of green. It can get extremely cold from June to October, with snowstorms sometimes grounding flights and bringing transport systems to a halt.

Culture and customs

Mongolia is known for its strong nomadic traditions, but life has recently become more urbanized for many citizens in this sparsely populated country. Almost 50% of the population live in or near an urban centers, while the other 50% live a semi-nomadic lifestyle in the countryside; although, settled agricultural communities can be found in rural areas and are growing each year. Despite this change in lifestyle, the rich nomadic heritage remains strong and traditional Mongol songs, dance, stories and clothing are still celebrated, especially during festivals and national holidays.

Many Mongolian people are Buddhist - this is evident in the monasteries and temples that populate the urban areas as well as the remote regions. Shamanism is also still in existence in some of the more isolated regions of Mongolia where the proud cultures have been somewhat protected from modern influences.

A common thread that links most Mongolians is respect for family and the importance of hospitality. Probably borne from the nomadic way of life, sharing with others and receiving guests with grace is a common theme that recurs in Mongolian society. Harsh conditions, a changeable climate and the uncertainty of nomadic life mean that most Mongolians go out of their way to provide a safe haven for family, friends and guests. It is for this reason that turning down food or not accepting a warm welcome is not advisable.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating. Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Mongolian food will probably be very different to what you’re used to. Due to many Mongolians living a nomadic lifestyle, access to ingredients and different modes of cooking are limited. Fermented milk products and meats such as goat, mutton and horse are commonly eaten. Vegetarians might find eating difficult here, especially since refusing food is considered rude when visiting people’s homes. The cafes and eateries of Ulaanbaatar offer more variety and should be frequented.

Things to try in Mongolia

These steamed meat dumplings are usually served during festive times, but can be found in restaurants and cafes all year round.

2. Khuushuur

Similar to buuz, these meat-filled dumplings are fried, not steamed. Served in the cafes of Ulaanbaatar, these pastry pockets are a cheap, flavorsome snack.

Geography and environment

Bordered by   China   and   Russia , Mongolia is a land of mountains and plateaus, grasslands, marshes and deserts. Even though Mongolia is landlocked, Lake Khovsgol (one of Asia’s largest freshwater lakes) provides 70% of Mongolia’s fresh water. This ancient lake provides much of the drinking water for the animal and human population, with the surrounding areas providing lush habitats for wolves, ibex, deer and bears. Due to Mongolia’s significant seismic activity, there are also many hot springs and volcanoes throughout the country.

Mongolia is one of the least densely populated countries in the world, leaving much space for nomadic herders to roam. The fast-growing capital city of Ulaanbaatar is an exception, being home to high-density housing, universities and financial institutions. As an economic centers and transport hub, Ulaanbaatar has all the modern conveniences expected of an international city.

History and government

Early history.

The area now known as Mongolia has been inhabited for more than 800,000 years. Archaeological evidence, such as rock paintings, points to groups of hunters and gatherers living throughout Mongolia in prehistoric times.

Mongolia’s early history is colored by battles and invasions, with various nomadic empires laying claim to the land.

The most famous of these was the Mongol Empire, created by Genghis Khan in 1206. This empire was known as the largest land-based empire of its time and had great success invading and claiming foreign territory, before declining due to infighting, disunity and the rise of neighboring territories.

Recent history

Modern Mongolia is an interesting mix of Mongol, Chinese and Russian influences.

Rising up to gain independence from decades of communist rule, modern Mongolia is becoming more fast-paced and globalized as the years go by.

Holding its first democratic election in 1990, Mongolia now enjoys a time of relative peace and stability, with tourism, agriculture and mineral resources providing more abundance and improvements in infrastructure and living conditions.

Where the Big Picture Gets Even Bigger

In the terrain of Mongolia’s rugged mountains, vast fertile steppe, and awe-inspiring Gobi Desert—you will find a beauty unique to only the wildest places on Earth.

The preservation of these dynamic landscapes may be owed in part to Mongolia being sealed off from the world for most of the 20th century. Yet the greater factor is that roughly a third of the population lives as nomadic herders, moving several times a year among the lush countryside, and they honor the land by respecting and preserving it—as Mongolian’s have done since the days of Chinggis Khan.

Nomadic Expeditions has been leading world-class tours and journeys throughout Mongolia since 1992, upon the signing of the country’s new democratic constitution—travel spearheaded by our Founder and CEO Jalsa Urubshurow, a pioneer in environmental conservation through sustainable tourism. Our infrastructure and expertise in the country has not only set a path for eco-travel to flourish here, it provides unrivaled authenticity and exclusivity throughout your Mongolia tour adventures.

We present the opportunity to seamlessly explore this land of astonishing marvels in rich detail—camel trekking across seas of hypnotic dunes, riding Mongolian horses in the footsteps of the long-ago Silk Road trade route, paddling the “dark blue pearl” of utterly pristine Lake Hovsgol, beholding the falconry of Kazakh golden eagle hunters who once relied on their birds to capture prey during winter in the Altai Mountains.

Staying in luxuriously appointed traditional gers and meeting local families of Mongolia’s eminently hospitable nomadic people—you will come to know more than a place, but a timeless way of life.

What our customers say.

We have been back home from our recent nice trip and would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the assistance you gave us in putting together our custom individualized trip to Western Mongolia. Everything went well and we did enjoy our trip and appreciate the expertise from you and your staffs.

Amazing and relaxing !

We stayed at Jalman Meadows for three days and wished we had arranged a longer stay. It is very remote and tranquil, all quiet, such beautiful nature, amazing views. We hiked up mountains and on flatlands, rode horses with local nomads for half a day. We also got to visit a local nomadic family in their home with the help from one of the staff who translated, and were able to ask questions about their daily life - so interesting! The gers are cozy, beds very comfortable and we slept like babies. Good food, and also available for vegetarians. Friendly staff. This was the very highight of our trip, we just loved Jalman Meadows.

5 star rating

This place is wonderful! They have excellent food, the location is fabulous and the activities are really awesome. We did the yak cart rafting and horse back riding. I highly recommend this place! The staff is thoughtful and very professional!

Simply the best camp we visited!

This was the best camp we stayed at, the attention to detail from mirrors in the gers to being able to get a hot drink anytime, made it exceptional. The staff could not do enough for you, from lighting the fires in the ger, to loading up the bucket in the shower ger. The food was good breakfast was very good. It's situation means that it cannot be seen from the main track. The gers were the best decorated & most comfortable of our stay in Mongolia.

Exotic experience

Delightful stay in a great camp where you live in a "luxury" Ger, eat delicious food and experience life in the desert. Camel Riding was a highlight. The toilet was clean and there was also a washbasin. The Camp has its own Ger where you can take a shower in warm water. The hosts were pleasant and helpful. I would recommend a stay here highly.

Wild Simplicity in a Glamping Environment

Leading up to my visit, I was researching places to stay where I could be away from social media and technology while soaking in the Mongolian wilderness. I came across Nomadic Journeys and Jalman Meadows Wilderness Camp seemed to fit that mold...

Gobi steppe ride was much more than I expected.

Gobi steppe ride was much more than I expected. Our horses and guides were absolutely fantastic. They made us feel welcome, well taken care of, safe and secure. The scenery, the horses and our guides were all delightful. The quality of the tents and meals were above what I expected. All of the elements were there -- people, horses, scenery.

For 25 years Nomadic Journeys has been a leading tour operator in Mongolia, focusing on low impact sustainable tourism. We work with numerous community groups and conservation initiatives around Mongolia. Our philosophy is to offer a low impact travel experience, visiting different places on horse back, yak cart, and camel cart over long difficult journeys on a vehicle. Read more

“A totally unique experience! Mongolia was a super fun country and I couldn’t have done it without Big Mongolia Travel. I feel like I got the real “local” experience and learned a ton about Mongolia. I chose to rough it a bit, but there were definitely accommodations for those that rather travel more comfortably. I highly recommend this company to help plan your trip!”

Mongolia Tours and Trips 2024/2025

Want to find yourself in the middle of nowhere? Mongolia is the destination for you. With only 1.7 people per square-kilometer, you’ll feel as if you have the vast sandy dunes, towering mountains and deep lakes all to yourself. Head to Ulaanbaatar , the nation’s capital, for city sightseeing tours before exploring local culture, wildlife and natural wonders in the rural Uvs and Töv provinces.

Mongolia - tour highlights and travel tips.

The phenomenal country of Mongolia has a geographical diversity unlike anywhere else on Earth, combining sandy desert dunes with high mountains and deep lakes.

A tour of Mongolia is perfect for anyone who fancies themselves a nomad. With a population density of only 1.7 people per square-kilometer, Mongolia is uniquely empty, ideal for a little bit of self-discovery. The phenomenal country also has a geographical diversity unlike anywhere else on Earth, combining sandy desert dunes with high mountains and deep lakes - all of which can be enjoyed while soaking up 250 days of pure sunshine each year.

Tour Highlights

  • Ride a horse in Gorkhi Terelj National Park
  • Ride a camel in the Gobi, the fifth-largest desert in the world
  • Sleep in a ger tent (or yurt), the traditional home of Mongolian nomads
  • Find serenity at the Erdene Zuu Monastery in Kharkhorin
  • Stroll through the meadows of Gorkhi-Terelj National Park

Travel Tips

  • One of Mongolia’s top draws for tourists is the annual Naadam festival. This shouldn't-be-missed event is celebrated in mid-July and is a fantastic way to experience the country’s traditional clothing and dramatic sports competitions.
  • Get ready for that windswept look. Mongolia is an incredibly windy country, so be sure to bring a windbreaker, something to protect your face (like a scarf), and balm for dry lips.
  • If planning an overnight trip to the Gobi Desert during the summer, be sure to pack a variety of clothing and supplies for all temperatures. Expect very hot temperatures during the day, but cold winds at night.
  • When camping, don't take your electricity for granted. Most ger camps rely on generators, and many only supply electricity during certain hours. Ask for hours upon arrival, and be sure to bring some battery-powered flashlights.
  • Mongolians love visitors. If passing a nomadic family's ger on your travels, don't be shy - stop by for a chat. You'll often be offered a cup of milk tea and some pleasant conversation. Bring some gifts with you in anticipation of these visits.

Mongolia has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Mongolia before planning your tour.

Where do I start? I love Mongolia, and have been 3 times with View Mongolia, a company that has enabled us to get up close with locals, especially nomad families, whom we have deep respect for. This review is about all 3 trips, in WINTER (central Mongolia), SUMMER (west and north Mongolia) and AUTUMN (very north of Mongolia).

I contacted View Mongolia Travel after searching and reading a Trip Advisor review. I was conversing with Ms Boggie the whole time and her English was excellent and so accommodating and understanding of our needs. We are family of four with two boys, at the time 6 and 9 years old. My eldest had dietary restrictions and everything was not a problem where ever we went... Even with the nomads.

Mongolian Tour Review

Mrs. Caitlin Nichols Read From TripAdvisor

Traveler from usa (horse riding tour).

We booked View Mongolia for a 5 day tour of the Steppes on horseback. The company is great to work with and very accommodating. When the posted itineraries didn't work for our schedule, they were happy to customize one just for us. We also thought that the price was very reasonable for a private guide, driver, wrangler, and all meals and accommodations. As an avid equestrian, I was a little concerned with what the quality/health of the horses would be, and I was quite happy to see that they were well-cared for and very healthy and sound. I would definitely use this company again.

Testimonials

Johannes Kevin

Hi Victor, we had a wonderful time in Mongolia. It was superb from start to finish. Our guide Anka was the best guide ever, and Miga was a good driver and very friendly. We learnt about Mongolian culture, art and much more, and the traditional hot-stone barbeque tasted great. We'll definitely recommend your company to our friends. Thank you for organizing our trip.

Georgia Grace

Prior to our arrival Victor created a custom itinerary to fit in exactly what we wanted in 21days when other tour companies had just offered a stock standard tour. Mongolia isn't a country for the faint of heart but they took care of our every need during our trip. When speaking to other travelers we met along the way we realised that they were missing out on some of the authentic nomadic experiences we were almost having every day during our trip. I would recommend Victor Expedition to anyone who wants to see the real Mongolia.

Heidi Ryan

13days trip to Reindeer people was amazing and Victor organized the trip perfectly, the accommodations great, the food fantastic, especially the dumplings with coleslaw we had and then all the nomadic families we visited were awesome. Our guide Gana paid such good attention and made sure we were taken care of. Cannot recommend this trip highly enough.

Friedrich

My wife and i enjoyed seeing how Mongolia's nomadic people live and work in a wide-open space, that was fascinating. We booked the West Mongolia's adventure trip with a few customizations. Excellent customer service, well-versed guide, extremely helpful driver and well organised.

Alberto Remigio

We booked 6days trip with Victor Expedition in Aug 2019 as part of a 14 people tour group. Our guide was Mamla and his English was super fluent. He was very knowledgeable and passionate about his country. Our group had a wonderful experience in the Gobi. Mamla took very special care for us. We all highly recommend Mamla and Victor Expedition.

We will immerse you in their world as we live, eat, and journey with them into the heart of Mongolia’s rugged terrain and vast valleys. Join us on this special nomadic adventure as we ride horseback, learn Mongolian archery, and experience the ancient customs of one of the world’s last remaining nomadic cultures.

R ural Ger Camps

amazing mongolia tours

For five of the eight nights, adventurers will be staying in ger camps in the Mongolian countryside. These traditional gers (also known as yurts) replicate what Mongolia’s nomads have historically lived in during their seasonal movements around Mongolia’s grasslands. Each camp will have 20-35 gers, and each dwelling will have 2-4 beds (sleeping bags are not required) as well as a traditional wood-burning stove. Communal dining facilities as well as separate male and female bathroom blocks with western style facilities are located a short distance from the dwellings. Facilities can vary from luxurious to basic: many camps have 24-hour electricity and on-demand hot water, whereas others use generators that do not necessarily operate 24/7.

Mongolia experiences extreme temperatures with very cold winters and hot summers. The best time to visit is during the summer months from June to August when the weather is mild and favorable for outdoor activities.

Most visitors to Mongolia require a visa, which can typically be obtained from Mongolian embassies or consulates abroad. Some nationalities may be eligible for visa-free entry or visa-on-arrival for certain durations.

Key attractions include the Gobi Desert, Terelj National Park, Khuvsgul Lake, the ancient capital of Karakorum (Kharkhorin), and the famous Flaming Cliffs (Bayanzag). Nomadic culture experiences, including staying in a ger (traditional yurt), are also highly recommended.

Mongolia is generally considered a safe country for travelers. However, it’s essential to exercise caution in urban areas, take necessary precautions in remote areas, and be mindful of local customs and traditions.

Traditional Mongolian cuisine revolves around meat, particularly mutton, beef, and goat. Popular dishes include buuz (steamed dumplings), khuushuur (deep-fried dumplings), and airag (fermented mare’s milk). Dairy products like yogurt and cheese are also common.

Traveling around Mongolia often involves using a combination of domestic flights, long-distance buses, and, in more remote areas, private vehicles or guided tours. The Trans-Siberian Railway also crosses through Mongolia, offering another travel option.

Essential items include sturdy hiking boots, layers of clothing suitable for both hot days and cool nights, a hat and sunglasses for sun protection, insect repellent, and a good quality sleeping bag if camping or staying in gers.

While major cities like Ulaanbaatar have relatively good internet access and mobile phone coverage, remote areas may have limited or no connectivity. It’s advisable to purchase a local SIM card or portable Wi-Fi device if reliable communication is essential during your trip.

Saiga Antelope

Day 1: Arrive Ulaanbaatar

Arriving at Ulaanbaatar we check into our comfortable hotel. Depending on the time of arrival we will do an introductory birding walk in the east of the city. Amur Falcon, Azure Tit, Azure-winged Magpie, Long-tailed Rosefinch, White-crowned Penduline Tit, White-cheeked Starling are all possible along the Tuul River. Night in Ulaanbaatar.

Days 2-3: Gun Galuut Nature Reserve

After breakfast we start driving towards Gun Galuut Nature Reserve. On the way we may stop at the huge statue of Genghis Khan. Shortly before arriving to camp there will be some very productive shallow lakes and marshes where we should encounter suites of common shorebirds including Long-toed and Red-necked stints, Pacific Golden-Plover, Spotted Redshank, Wood and Marsh Sandpiper. The lakes have yielded many surprises in the past including Baikal Teal, Falcated Duck, Little Curlew, Asian Dowitcher and Grey-tailed Tattler.

Our ger camp is situated in a beautiful river valley surrounded by steppes and rocky hills. Gun Galuut protects a range of mountain and steppe habitats along with some varied and exciting wetlands. The rocky hills are home to a strong population of Argali Sheep and Pallas’s Cat in good rodent years. We will scan the rocky outcrops during late afternoon for the cats hunting Brandt’s Voles, their favourite prey. Argalis are usually seen in small groups grazing on the mountainside in the early morning so after some 30 minutes driving and scanning we should be able to find them. Other mammals of the area include Corsac Fox, Daurian Pika, Mongolian Jird and the nocturnal Siberian Jerboa.

The birdlife of Gun Galuut is very rich. We will explore the vegetation along the river near our campsite for migratory songbirds. In the past, these have been quite rewarding, rendering a variety of warblers including Pallas’s Grasshopper, Greenish, Two-barred, Dusky and Thick-billed, as well as Olive-backed Pipit, Taiga Flycatcher, and Black-faced and Pallas’s buntings.

White-naped Cranes nest in the marshes and we should find this magnificent bird in family groups along with other crane species including Common and the daintier Demoiselles. The lakes also attract numerous water birds including grebes, swans, ducks, gulls and as many as five species of terns. We may see Bar-headed and Swan geese, Whooper Swan, Common and Ruddy shelducks, Eurasian Wigeon, Garganey, Common Pochard, Tufted Duck and Stejneger’s Scoter. As we drive across the shortgrass steppe we may find several species of larks including Asian Short-toed, Horned and Mongolian larks, Isabelline and Northern wheatears, and Richard’s and Blyth’s pipits. We will particularly be on the lookout for the sandy coloured Pere David’s Snowfinch that inhabits the steppes. Raptors will be represented by Upland Buzzard, Steppe Eagle, Cinereous Vulture, Black-eared Kite, Eastern Marsh Harrier, and Saker and Amur falcons. The rocky slopes are home to Rock Sparrow and Twite, while Pallas’s Sandgrouse could be present anywhere in the area. Night in permanent ger camp, en suite chalets available.

Days 4 - 5: Birding Terelj NP

We leave Gun Galuut and visit Terelj National Park on the way to Ulaanbaatar. Terelj has fantastic rock formations, coniferous and riparian forests and is home to many birds. It is a stretch of the Siberian Taiga Forest, and a completely different habitat compared to other regions we will visit. Eastern Buzzard is usually seen patrolling the mountains and Lammergeier is also often seen. Rocky outcrops are home to Kozlov’s Accentor, Rock Thrush and Godlewski’s Bunting. There are many woodland birds found in the coniferous forests including chances for Siberian Rubythroat, Red-flanked Bluetail, Daurian Redstart, Taiga and Dark-sided Flycatcher, Red-throated Thrush, Dusky, Hume’s and Two-barred Warbler, Nutcracker and Black Woodpecker. Black-billed Capercaillie is a secretive and rare bird that can be seen in Terelj during the lekking season in the spring. It requires an early morning walk to the lek, but the views of these magnificent birds lekking are worth all the efforts. Night in Terelj.

On Day 5, we will spend the morning birding the Terelj area. After lunch, we drive back to the capital. Night in Ulaanbaatar hotel.

Day 6: Fly to Khovd, Western Altai Mountains

We take a domestic flight to Khovd and we drive to our ger camp where we will stay for the next 6 nights. It is operated by a local wildlife protection community, which is a local organization with the single purpose of protecting the extremely rich nature and wildlife reserve. The camp is located by the foothills of Jargalant Mountain facing at the mountain chain on the one side and the semi desert and a huge lake on the other. The facilities here are basic, shared, but comfortable and clean. Our local team is keen to provide everything we need for the maximum comfort in the area where we will be literally on our own apart from a few nomadic herders and their animals. We will spend 6 nights in Snow Leopard ger camp.

Days 7 - 11: Western Altai Mountains

The next 5 days will find us searching primarily for the elusive Snow Leopard as one of our main priorities. We timed our trip to match the period when the cats are most likely to be seen hunting or guarding their prey. It is difficult to say how good the chances are. There is no guarantee of sightings, but by working with our local team to find the best location we hope to see this majestic animal as we did in most of our tours so far. The terrain here is considerably easier to negotiate than in their other habitats where the conditions are generally much harsher (high altitude, low temperature, difficult terrain, need of acclimatization, hikes, sleeping in tents, etc.).

Our experienced drivers will take us as close as possible to the observation sites. Most of the time walking will be limited to a few meters. Other times we will have to take a short or medium length walk that will demand basic fitness and ability to walk on rocky, uneven or steep terrain. However, many of the typical observation points can be reached by a 4X4 vehicle or a short walk. As we have plenty of time, we will be able to proceed at a speed that is comfortable for everyone. This holiday is planned to be a very slow paced one with plenty of time for everything. Our local s scouts will be on the mountain most of the time looking for a Snow Leopard. They successfully locate one or more Snow Leopards during almost each tour, and we hope one will be in an easily accessible area. We are also in contact with local shepherds and if one of their animals was killed by the leopards, they will immediately report it to our local team. It is very important for conservation reasons and for us it is a great help. While our local helpers are scouting, we might opt to locate ourselves in a key area to scan the mountainsides where animals occur regularly during hunting or patrolling their territories.

To find a Snow Leopard needs patience, but it is in fact a special aspect of the holiday: it is a very slow-paced activity that allows us to admire the breath-taking scenery, incredible alpine flora and the highlights of the avifauna without haste. There will always be things to look at; the soaring raptors above us, the playful Siberian Marmots that keep whistling to each other signalling danger or grazing Siberian Ibex with their amazing ability to climb almost vertical cliffs. There will be White-winged Snowfinches, Mongolian Finches flying around us, as well as Brown Accentor and the local race of Horned Lark. Those with sharp eyes will be able to spot the beautiful Guldenstadt’s Redstart that inhabits the highest peaks, and we will surely have time to track down some of the flocks of Altai Snowcocks by scanning the cliffs.

Lammergeier, Steppe Eagle, Black-eared Kite, Saker Falcon, Cinereous and Himalayan Vulture are often seen as they scan the pastures for prey or carcasses, the latter most probably left by the Snow Leopards.

The Saiga Antelope is probably one of the oddest-looking animals of its kind, and now it’s critically endangered due to various factors. Mongolia has two populations; one of them is actually a few kilometres from our base, in a flat semi desert area. The local subspecies is called “tatarica” which is sometimes considered to be a separate species. They can run at a very high speed and are easily identifiable as they always keep their head down, even while running.

Another possible highlight here is strictly an after-dinner activity just in and around our campsite. We will walk in the flat rocky desert area scanning with our torchlights for small “jumping, glowing eyes”. The tiny kangaroo-like rodents are most likely Siberian and Mongolian Three-toed Jerboas, which with luck and with some skill can be approached and observed as they feed on insects just a few meters away, sometimes even jumping between our shoes. Their long ears and tails that end in a fluffy ball of fur make them very special, unique animals to watch.

We shall also visit a nearby lakes and the adjacent wetlands, which offer a lot to see. Pallas’s Sandgrouse might come to drink on the shore, Whooper Swan and Dalmatian Pelican breed amongst the vast expanse of reedbeds, Pallas’s Gulls, Whiskered and Gull-billed terns are also here. Sometimes large concentrations of White-headed Ducks are seen and Red-crested Pochards are also found on the lake. The nearby grasslands seem to be perfect for many passerines including Asian Short-toed Lark, Richard’s Pipit, Western Yellow and Citrine Wagtail and Pallas’s Bunting. Another avian highlight of Mongolia, the Henderson’s Ground-jay is living near to our campsite, and a short walk or drive should produce sightings of these wonderful birds.

Days 12 - 13: Return Ulaanbaatar then Hustain Nuruu National Park

We will drive to the airport and fly back to Ulaanbaatar. Depending on arrival time, we either stay in a hotel in stay in Ulaanbaatar for the night or we will drive to our ger camp in Hustai National Park, which is two hours away. Hustain Nuruu National Park is home to the successfully reintroduced wild horse, the Thaki or Przewalski’s Horse. Short walks along the rolling hills will bring us Long-tailed Souslik and Tarbagan Marmot, but most probably we will spend quite some time admiring the beauty of the world’s only true wild horse species. The rocky areas are home to Pied Wheatear, Meadow Bunting and Lesser Whitethroat.

The elm trees along the valleys hold a small population of the elegant Amur Falcon, while Lesser Kestrels hunt on the hillsides and Golden Eagles patrol the skies. Some spots are productive for Daurian Partridge. This is our chance to add Mongolian Gazelle to our list of mammals. We shall drive a few kilometres away from the central part of the national park to find them in the lowlands.

Day 14: Morning birding around Hustai National Park, then transfer to Ulaanbaatar

After a morning of birding around Hustai National Park, we will then drive back to Ulaanbaatar. We may visit the capital in the afternoon if guests are interested in a short city sightseeing, or perhaps a huge quality cashmere shop. Night in Ulaanbaatar.

Day 15: Departure

Our Mongolia Snow Leopards and Birding tour ends today. You can depart anytime for flights home.

What to Expect

Accommodation

The overall standard of accommodation on this tour is good, but please note that Mongolian hotels generally average below the international standard in the West. All hotel rooms are en suite. We spend ten nights in comfortable ger (yurt) camps, which for many visitors are a highlight of the tour. The ger camps are permanent and purpose-built to accommodate tourists, offering comfortable but simply furnished accommodation. Bathroom facilities at the ger camps are in shared permanent toilet blocks and are usually clean. Hot showers are also available in shared facilities.

Please note that there are en suite rooms (chalets) available at Gun Galuut camp, so please let us know if you want to upgrade.

All included in the price. Food is generally good and wholesome although for some it may seem to lack variety. We can cater to most people with special diets.

Some easy to moderate hill trails, but all taken at a gentle pace. Comfy walking shoes or lightweight boots recommended. Be prepared for optional early starts tempered where possible with a break after lunch prior to birding again later in the afternoon.

Mongolia has a continental climate and can vary considerably at this time of year – you need to dress accordingly. Generally, it will be warm or hot during the day, but it can be chilly at night and in the early mornings. Cold weather can be expected at the higher altitudes with strong winds, and rain is also possible at almost any time. Temperatures during the day may range between 15-28˚C, while night-time temperatures in the mountains can drop significantly.

Most of the tour will be spent above 1300m and we will spend time in landscapes often at 1800m. Our camp in the Altai Mountains is situated at an elevation of 1700m and we will drive up to maximum 3200m in search of Snow Leopard.

Internal Flights

There are 1 or 2 companies offering flights between the capital and Khovd. Their annual schedule is usually not announced before March. It may happen that there are no daily flights, which may result in the slight rearrangement of our itinerary.

Ground Transport

Japanese 4WDs provide greater comfort and safety, with knowledgeable local drivers who will ensure we get to our destinations safely. There will be some long drives, some along unsealed roads through scenic landscapes, but we will stop regularly. A window seat will be provided to all clients and there is permanent radio contact between vehicles.

There is no malaria risk on this tour. Mosquitoes are not present during most of our itinerary, but in Terelj and Gun Galuut and some steppe lake shores there might be some, especially in wet years. Be sure to bring repellent.

Photo opportunities

Good, plus incidental photographic opportunities.

Featured Wildlife

While we cannot guarantee sightings of the birds or mammals listed below, we believe that encountering these species is quite likely during this tour.
