Frequently Asked Questions

Yes! All of our tours includes a guided visit to our spectacular the national park.

The Big Island Highlights Day Tour will begin early in the morning (7:30am) and includes a gourmet lunch on the rim of the Volcano and a stop at Rainbow Falls. The Deluxe Volcanoes and Dinner Tour will have a later start (12pm), includes more focus on the Volcano National Park, as well as an elevated, three-course dinner before returning home.

Our tours are designed from the ground up for discerning travelers. From our exclusive partnerships with high-end resorts to our private tastings and experiences not open to the general public, you get unparalleled access. Forget being herded like cattle or looking over someone’s shoulder – with our upgraded Mercedes Sprinter fleet, oversized panoramic windows, luxurious leather captains chairs and warm/cold towel service – you’ll be given the white glove service from start to finish.

Our itineraries are designed to avoid peak times at busy areas. For example, at famous Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, we time our arrival after the large tour buses have departed to allow for a tranquil experience with the nesting honu (green sea turtles). We also have priority reservations at many of our stops to ensure an intimate and authentic experience.

While we make regular stops, preventing boredom is crucial, especially with our younger guests. That’s why our guides incorporate interactive storytelling, hands-on demonstrations like making seed leis from native plants, and activities tailored to each child’s interests. We also provide coloring books, games and other keepsakes to keep their hands and minds engaged between destinations. Our guides are also trained to modify the tour content to match appropriate age levels

We run tours rain or shine – though we’ll reschedule the tour in the event of unsafe or extreme weather. Hawaii’s microclimates mean the weather can vary across the island and we have options to adjust our itinerary to ensure you experience the best conditions while seeing our iconic sights.

Immersing you in Hawaii’s rich cultural heritage is our mission. Our local guides weave in ancient legends, historical narratives, and personal stories throughout the tour. You’ll participate in traditions like making plumeria leis, learn key Hawaiian phrases, and gain a deep appreciation for the island’s sacred sites. We go beyond just showing you the sights – we connect you to the heart and soul of Hawaii.

We limit our tours to a maximum of 12 guests per luxury Mercedes vehicle to ensure a personalized and intimate experience. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to interact with your guide, ask questions, and get to know your fellow travelers. For the ultimate in exclusivity, private tours are also available for your group alone.

While active lava flow isn’t guaranteed year-round, you’ll still witness the raw power and beauty of Hawaii’s volcanoes up close. Our expert guides prioritize your safety, using only approved trails and viewpoints. They monitor conditions in real-time and can adjust plans if needed. You’re in very capable hands to experience the wonder of standing on some of the youngest landscapes on earth!

All-inclusive means all-inclusive. All tasting fees, meals, beverages, park entries and transportation are included in one upfront price for a seamless, stress-free experience.

Tips are never required but are greatly appreciated by our hardworking guides. If you enjoy your tour experience, feel your guide provided exceptional service, and want to show your gratitude, tipping is a wonderful way to do so. While the amount is always at your discretion, a common range for full-day excursions is $20-$40 per guest.

For your safety and comfort, open alcohol containers are not allowed in our vehicles. However, wine/beer tastings are included at certain stops for those 21+ to enjoy responsibly. Non-alcoholic beverages are also available throughout the tour.

Our Mercedes vans have panoramic views that help even our most sensitive guests avoid severe motion sickness. Though we also offer amenities like ginger candies and provide frequent stops throughout the journey.

Our guides are local experts rigorously trained in service, safety and storytelling. We maintain a 5-star guest rating because of their passion and personalities. But you don’t need to take our word for it. Read more about our amazing guides from past guest reviews!

Definitely not! During your online booking, we’ll ask about any food allergies, restrictions or preferences, we’ll communicate in advance with our farm-to-table lunch providers as well as the establishments hosting our tastings. From vegetarian to gluten-free and beyond, we’ve got you covered with delicious kid-friendly options.

We welcome families on our tours! However, to ensure the safety and comfort of our youngest guests, children under 5 are only permitted on private tours. Hawaii State Law requires all children 3 years and younger to be in a proper safety seat, and children aged 4 to 7 who weigh between 40 and 80 pounds and are less than 57 inches tall must be in a booster seat. We have all child seat options available upon request at no additional charge. During the booking process, please notify us of your children’s ages and seat requirements so we can best accommodate your family’s needs.

This tour allows people to explore the island at their fitness and comfort level. It is our “Easy” tour. You will be given the opportunity to exit the vehicle to enjoy the lush and unique landscapes of Greenwell Coffee Farm, Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, Volcano Winery, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, and Rainbow Falls. All walks are optional and it is up to you how far you walk at these destinations. The Thurston Lava Tube is the most strenuous part of the tour with roughly 15 steps down, a twenty-minute or 1/3 mile hike through the tube, and roughly 20 steps up.

Though we have a compact collapsible wheelchair available for guests, our guides are not able to push/assist with wheelchair mobility. Our tours are active and require some physical exertion. While on tour guests may experience some or all of the following: a large step up into the van, tight aisles, steep hills in either direction, stairs, uneven surfaces, wet surfaces, and loose sand. If you have any questions or would like to know more details about the physical aspects of your specific tour, please contact Kailani Tours staff at 808-938-4057 or [email protected] .

Kailani Tours Hawaii will provide your meals, snack baskets, beverages, hiking gear, jackets, parkas, umbrellas, flashlights, other related gear for all weather conditions, and items to help with car sickness/nausea. Please come prepared with close-toed shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and a camera.

If you are not staying at a Resort or Hotel on our list of 40 pick-up locations on the West side of the Big Island of Hawaiʻi, then we have multiple centralized spots available with free and well-lit parking in the Kailua-Kona and Waikoloa areas. This is very important to have scheduled as early as possible.

A private tour allows you to go at your own pace, customize the itinerary, have more flexibility and receive upgraded services and exclusivity.

With Trip Protection, you can cancel for a full refund up to 1 hour before your tour’s scheduled departure – under any circumstances. Without trip protection, you may cancel or reschedule up to 48 hours before your tour’s scheduled departure with no fees or penalties.

The tour was excellent! Erik, the tour guide, is full of knowledge about history, volcanoes, lava, etc. highly recommend!

Our tour guide (Kala Holiday) was absolutely amazing with his wealth of knowledge. We loved that he gave historic information about Hawaii as well as the language, culture and other tidbits of information while driving from one location to the next. As we got closer to the next stop, he would provide information on the landmark so that when we got out of the vehicle, we already had the knowledge and could see and understand it at our own leisure. I could hear other groups gathered around their tour guide trying to listen to what we had already learned while on the drive, which allowed us to venture further to take pictures and enjoy it more than if we had to stand together and listen. Thank you Kala and Wasabi Tours!

This trip was GREAT! Dreu was an incredible guide and shared so many great tidbits about the island and history. We learned places to snorkel, eat, and more. This was a PERFECT way to kick off our first full day on the Big Island and set us up for a fun remainder of our vacation.

Eric was the best tour guide, he was so knowledgeable, nice and funny. We had so much fun, met nice people on the tour and got to see so many highlights around island. Would definitely recommend

I truly enjoyed this tour. It gives you the opportunity to explore this great Island and was well paced. Our tour guide Brian was great and provided an extensive history on the Island and culture. I highly recommend this tour especially if you are new to the Island.

Eric was very knowledgeable and fantastic personality. Enjoyed the Big Island tour and saw some amazing sites! Mahalo, Eric

The tour delivers what it promises, the Big Island in a Day. You see a wide variety of sights from black 'sand' beaches, to volcanoes and waterfalls. A great way to see the Island if you don't want to drive yourself (and work out where you are going!)

We opted to do this tour on our first day in Hawaii, so that we could see the whole island and determine if there were any areas that we wanted to return to on our own! Our guide, Kahikina, was fabulous! He was SOO knowledgeable, funny, easy to listen to and personable. Our tour lasted 11 hours! Kahikina took us to all the places he could from coffee farm, to water falls, to volcanoes and steam vents, through the forests of eucalyptus, to black sand beaches as well as lunch at a beautiful orchid farm. We were able to see the landscape on all parts of the island! I would highly recommend this tour!

We loved loved loved Juliana! She was exceptional!! Very knowledgeable enthusiastic, patient and sweet! She taught us so much about the history and geography of Hawaii. She made this experience fun and exciting. We loved her stories. The tour and touring with Juliana, we highly recommend. Thank you!!

Top notch! Request Sergio! All over the island adventure is more than expected. Great history. Many stops to break up the trip. Highly recommend.

Mr. K was the tour guide on my trip. He was great! Mr. K knows so much about the island. If anyone had a question, he was happy to reply. He tells great stories, shares the culture, and tells funny jokes. One thing I appreciated was being told approximately how long it would be between stops. I ended my day feeling like I had seen the island well. Lunch and snacks were provided. Lunch was delicious. Enjoyed my day very much! Thank you to Viator for helping me connect with this tour!

My wife and I went on an all day tour with Wasabi Tours hosted by Mr. K (aka "Bruddah K"). The tour hit the hot spots my wife was hoping for. The lunch prepared by Mr. K and his wife was the kind of homemade bento lunch that my wife would make for us, and was delicious. We highly recommend this tour.

The entire experience met all of expectations for my wife and I. Our tour guide Kela was a wealth of knowledge about all of the sites and the culture and history of Hawaii. The vehicle allowed for comfort of the parties. I would suggest it to any that visits the island.

We really enjoyed our tour with Ryan. It was a long day but Ryan kept us engaged. I wish we could have spent more time on Big Island but our plans didn't allow for it.

The words and gentle laugh of Awana our guide are still with me now months after our tour. He introduced our group to the most beautiful areas of the Big Island as well as to the rich culture of which I knew not much. It has allowed me to continue to learn about the culture of Hawaii from his guidance and our visit is still so strong in my Heart.

Very enjoyable and educational trip. Nate was a great guide, sharing island history, keeping us on schedule, and answering all our questions. We traveled through several ecosystems and got a good overview of the island. Highly recommended.

The tour was awesome. Even though we weren't able to visit the volcanoes, and all of us wanted to, they modified the tour and were still able to show us some beautiful sights. Our guide was Nate, and he was wonderful. He really knew about the areas he took us to, and had a great sense of humor. He even did a good job taking our jokes about wanting to see the lava multiple times. He kept us all safe and made sure we were comfortable all throughout the day. This is a great way to see some very beautiful sights and see the entire island in one day! We would recommend this tour to anyone visiting the Big Island, as it was probably our favorite day of our trip.

kona homes on the big island

Winter is the best time to see  humpback whales  around the Big Island. From  November to April , these giant sea creatures come close to shore.

It’s thrilling. You can watch from the land early in the morning or take a  boat tour  for a closer look.

Seeing a whale leap out of the water for the first time changes you. It’s a connection with nature that’s hard to describe.

January and February are  peak months for whale watching  here. Make sure your camera is ready because you won’t want to miss capturing this moment!

Summer on the Big Island is the best time for  snorkeling and beach fun . The water gets warm, making it perfect to see fish and coral. You’ll want to get into the water early in the morning.

This is when the ocean is calm. At high tide, you can see a lot of fish. Low tide is great for looking at coral.

The Big Island has some famous spots for this. Captain Cook Monument and Kealakekua Bay are top places to snorkel.

Ready for adventure? The Big Island has you covered. Here, you can swim beside the large manta rays when the sun goes down.

It’s a unique experience unlike any other. Or, if heights are more your thing, zip lining across waterfalls will get your heart racing.

There’s even a new black sand beach to explore and valleys that lead to hidden sands of dark beauty you won’t find just anywhere in Hawaii.

These outdoor adventures on the Big Island aren’t just trips; they’re memories waiting to happen—so grab your gear and let’s go explore!

swim with manta rays on the big island

These rays are huge, as wide as boats! Plus, you have  over a 90% chance of seeing them  when you go out.

You should book early in your vacation because spots fill up fast. It’s an adventure unlike any other—floating on the ocean at night, watching these gentle giants glide by under the stars.

Zipping over Kolekole Falls , a smaller cousin of the famous Akaka Falls, gives you a rush like no other. Your adventure includes  seven lines that get more challenging as you go.

Imagine starting easy and ending with a thrill as you zip  2,000 feet across valleys and waterfalls .

The view is unbeatable – green forests below, clear sky above and water racing beneath.

You see everything from up high – trees, falls, and maybe even rainbows if you’re lucky. This isn’t just any zip line; it’s an experience that sticks with you long after your vacation ends.

You can find a  new black sand beach, Pohoiki,  on the Big Island’s southeastern coast, between Pāhala and Nāʻālehu. This beach came to life because of  volcanic activity . It has unique black sand that stands out from other beaches.

The area also offers picnic spots and restrooms for visitors.

My visit there was unforgettable. The sight of the black sand against the ocean was striking. Walking on it felt different than any other beach on the Big Island I’ve been to, with its unique black sand and vibrant scenery. The contrast of the dark sand with the clear blue water is something you have to see for yourself.

This spot is not just a place to relax; it’s a piece of Hawaii’s  ongoing natural history , shaped by volcanoes like Mauna Loa and Kīlauea that define this island’s landscape.

black sand beach

Venturing through Pololū Valley presents views as captivating as the endpoint itself.

This experience encompasses more than simply arriving at the beach. You also get to immerse in Hawaii’s  natural wonder  throughout the journey. Bear in mind, the return trail could prove more challenging due to the  steep terrain .

Because of this, it’s important to go at your own pace and know your limits!

we do not recommend swimming at mahana beach

One of the most unique beaches in the world, Papakōlea Green Sand Beach on the Big Island, is a must-see for adventurers.

The beach gets its distinctive green color from a mineral called olivine, created by volcanic activity.

Located on the southern tip of the island, getting there involves a 2.5-mile hike (or hitching a ride with locals in their 4x4s) through rugged, windy terrain.

But the reward is a stunning, rare beach that feels like a hidden gem, offering an unforgettable experience you won’t find anywhere else in Hawaii.

There is no lifeguard on duty.

For nature lovers, the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden near Hilo is a paradise of lush greenery and exotic plants.

Nestled in a valley along the coast, the garden is home to over 2,000 species of tropical plants from around the world.

As you wander the scenic trails, you’ll encounter towering waterfalls, vibrant orchids, and the sounds of birds echoing through the rainforest.

This peaceful, immersive experience offers a perfect way to connect with the natural beauty of Hawaii’s diverse ecosystems.

🌺 Luaus and Tours: We recommend Hawaii Tours

For an in-depth exploration of Hawaiian traditions, make sure to partake in the cultural experiences.

You have the opportunity to witness live hula dances and feast at an authentic Hawaiian luau. A visit to Pu’uhonua O Hōnaunau Historical Park is also an option.

Alternatively, you can visit the vibrant church in Kalapana. Each of these activities enhances your understanding of Hawaii’s dynamic history and vibrant culture.

Seeing a live hula show is a must-do. Hula dancers tell stories with their movements. They use their hands, feet, and faces. You’ll see two kinds of hula: ancient and modern. Ancient hula has chants and drums.

I watched a show on my last visit. The dancers wore beautiful outfits and moved in ways that made you feel part of the story they were telling. They danced about nature, love, and Hawaiian history.

It showed how much they care for the land and sea.

You can watch these dances at festivals or special events across the island. It’s a great way to learn about Hawaiian culture firsthand.

best luaus in hawaii big island

Going to a traditional Hawaiian luau on the Big Island is a must-do. It’s like stepping into the heart of Hawaii’s culture. You’ll get to enjoy cultural activities  and watch  hula and fire dancing .

The buffet dinner  will have you trying many local dishes, including the famous Kalua pig.

These events usually last for about 2.5 hours, giving you plenty of time to soak it all in.

Prices range from $130 to $220 per person, but there are free cultural events at National Parks and shopping centers too. This way, everyone can experience the spirit of Hawaii no matter their budget.

A luau is more than just a meal; it’s Hawaii’s way of sharing its history and culture with you.

You’ll leave with a full belly and heart, having experienced one of the most beloved traditions on the island.

9. Visit Pu’uhonua O Hōnaunau Historical Park

Pu'uhonua O Hōnaunau Historical Park

You should definitely visit Pu’uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park . It holds unique significance on the Big Island. The park earned its honor as a national historical park in 1961.

Previously, it served as a  refuge for those who violated ancient laws . Once you enter the park, there’s a sensation of traveling back in time.

he daily ranger talks at 11:30 am are extremely informative. They narrate tales of old Hawaii that keep you engaged.

This journey goes beyond simply observing; it invites you to connect with the spirit of Hawaii’s past.

Star of the Sea Painted Church

Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) / Kirk Aeder

The  Star of the Sea Painted Church  in Kalapana is a must-see. This small church stands out for its  bright paintings inside . It’s about 22 feet by 36 feet and has walls made of clapboard.

The roof is steep and made of corrugated material. In my travels, I’ve seen nothing quite like it. It was  moved to save it from lava flows .

Visiting this church gives you a peek into Hawaii’s  mix of culture and history . The artwork inside tells stories, making the building more than just a place to look at.

As someone who’s explored many parts of Hawaii, finding places that locals have fought to preserve always feels extra special.

If you’re planning your trip, don’t miss my guide on the Best Time to Visit the Big Island of Hawaii to make the most of your adventures. Also, be sure to check out the Best Big Island Waterfalls and the Best Beaches on the Big Island for more breathtaking experiences during your stay!

On the Big Island, nature and wildlife are everywhere you look. You can snorkel to see colorful fish or go hiking to spot rare birds in the forest.

This place is alive with creatures big and small, from sea turtles on black sand beaches to whales jumping in winter waters.

If you love animals and beautiful landscapes, this island offers an adventure that you won’t forget.

Snorkeling at Captain Cook Monument in Kealakekua Bay is a must-do on the Big Island. The bay, one of North America’s top snorkeling spots, provides  transparent waters abundant with colorful fish and coral .

You can get there through three methods: a 3.8-mile round-trip hike, a boat tour lasting from three hours to half a day, or a 15-30 minute kayak journey. Morning tours are preferable for dolphin sightings .

Regardless of whether you hike, kayak, or choose a boat tour, visiting this spot  connects you with Hawaii’s breathtaking underwater landscape .

Each method offers you a unique adventure to the monument honoring Captain James Cook.

whale watching on the big island of hawaii

Winter is the best time to see whales on the Big Island, making it one of the most unique experiences for visitors. From December to mid-April, these giant creatures come close to the island. The  peak season is in January . You can join a 2.5-hour Kailua-Kona Whale Watching Cruise or a 1.5-hour Kona one.

These tours give you a  chance to see these amazing animals up close .

If you don’t see any whales, don’t worry! Many tours offer a free retry. It’s an experience I’ve had myself and recommend to anyone visiting Hawaii during winter. Seeing a whale leap out of the water is something you’ll never forget.

You can see turtles at the  Black Sand Beach  near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. This beach is a special place where  endangered Hawksbill turtles and green turtles  come to rest on the shore.

It’s easy to get there from Highway 11, making it a must-see spot if you’re visiting Hawaii.

Please stay at least 10 feet away from these amazing sea creatures. They need their space to relax and stay safe. By keeping your distance, you help protect them while still enjoying their beauty up close.

This experience brings you closer to nature and teaches you about  wildlife conservation on the Hawaiian islands .

hawaii volcanoes national park - unique things to do on the big island

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is home to some amazing sights. Here, you’ll get to hike  Kilauea Iki Crater . This area offers views that were once filled with molten lava until the  2018 eruption  changed the landscape.

Imagine walking where over 40,000 cargo trucks-worth of lava flowed every day! It’s like stepping into a new world made by nature’s own forces.

Sadly, Jagger Museum in the park is closed. But don’t worry—there’s still plenty to see and learn here. You can drive down Chain of Craters Road . Along this road, every turn reveals something new about how our planet changes and creates life from destruction.

It’s not just a hike or a drive; it’s an adventure through time and nature at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Hawaiʻi Island.

Tasting the local flavors and cuisine is a must on the Big Island. You get to try fresh Kona coffee, eat traditional Hawaiian foods like poke and Kalua pig, and cool off with shaved ice filled with ice cream.

things to do in hilo coffee farm

You can’t visit Hawaii without trying Kona coffee right at the source. The north and south Kona regions are famous for their hundreds of coffee farms, like Kona Coffee Living History Farm, Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation, and Greenwell Farms.

Each place has its own special way of making coffee. Imagine walking through rows of green coffee trees, the air filled with the rich smell of brewing coffee.

I visited Mountain Thunder Coffee last year in December . The guide showed us around, telling stories about each step in making coffee – from the cherry to your cup!

We even got to taste different types right there among the plants where they grew. It was like drinking a cup of pure Aloha.

try poke on the big island

Eating  Hawaiian poke  is a must-do on your visit. This dish is simple but full of flavor, made from  raw fish  cut into small pieces and seasoned well. People often enjoy it as a snack or side dish.

It’s not just food; it’s a taste of  local culture .

For the best poke, head to Umeke’s in Kona. They serve big portions that will fill you up and make your taste buds happy. Another great spot is Foodland. Here, you can find many types of poke to try.

Don’t miss out on this delicious part of Hawaii!

You should definitely sample the  traditional Kalua pig  while visiting Hawaii. Chefs prepare an entire pig in an underground oven, known as an imu. They flavor it with sea salt and occasionally wrap it in ti or banana leaves.

This imparts the meat with a  tender, smoky flavor  renowned throughout the island. You can stumble upon this delightful dish at luaus and restaurants all over the Big Island.

Experiencing Kalua pig is an excellent method to get acquainted with Hawaiian culture. It represents more than just sustenance; it signifies a part of Hawaii’s history and tradition.

shave ice on the big island of hawaii

Treat yourself to  shaved ice with ice cream  in Kona. This  popular Hawaiian treat  comes from Japan’s kakigori. You get finely shaved ice topped with  colorful syrups . But adding ice cream makes it extra special.

At Scandinavian Shaved Ice in Kona, they know how to make it just right.

They offer common toppings like sweetened condensed milk, mochi, and azuki beans. Choose your favorite or try something new. It’s a cool way to enjoy  local flavors and beat the heat  at the same time.

For those who love adventure and want something different, off-the-beaten-path activities on the Big Island are a must. You can look at the stars from Mauna Kea or drive Chain of Craters Road for stunning views.

Check out local markets for fresh food or spend time in Pahoa, a unique small town. These experiences show you another side of Hawaii not many see. Get ready to explore more!

big island star gazing

Stargazing on Mauna Kea  is a must-do activity. This mountain rises 14,000 feet above sea level. It’s one of the best places to see the stars. The summit gives you  amazing views of the sky at night .

You can watch stunning sunsets before the stars come out.

You might like a guided tour, but it can cost over $200 per person. If that’s too much, visit the visitor center instead. They have free stargazing sessions there.

Bring warm clothes because it gets cold at night high up on Mauna Kea.

You’ll love driving the  Chain of Craters Road  in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. This road takes you on an 18.8-mile journey right into the heart of a  volcanic wonderland . You start at high elevations and descend to where the land meets the sea.

Along this route, you’ll see landscapes changed by lava flows from past eruptions, including one that partly covered the road in 1988.

The weather can change quickly here, so always be ready for sun or rain during your drive. Pack a lunch and enjoy it overlooking the ocean or next to craters that tell stories of Hawaii’s fiery past.

Check out a  Farmer’s Market  for the best  local produce . These markets are open one or two days each week. You can find them in places like Kona Village and Hilo. They have fresh fruits, veggies, prepared foods, and handmade gifts.

I’ve been to many of these markets myself. The Volcano Farmers Market on Sundays is one you shouldn’t miss.

You will meet both locals and visitors there. It’s a great way to see Hawaii’s community spirit. Plus, trying food straight from the farms is a treat!

pahoa town on the big island

“ Pahoa Hawaii Cultural Museum ” by  eggrole  is licensed under  CC BY 2.0 .

Pahoa is a small town with a big personality. With just over 1,100 people living there, it stands out as the bohemian heart of Puna. This place is all about  unique beach vibes  and  volcanic landscapes .

You’ve got to see the Kapoho Tide Pools and Ahalanui Beach Park. They are unlike any other spots on the Big Island.

That’s Pahoa for you – full of life and surprises around every corner.

For those who love the ocean, the Big Island offers endless water adventures. From learning to dive beneath the waves to exploring vibrant coral reefs on a snorkel trip, you’ll find excitement and wonder around every corner.

Get ready to swim with colorful fish, glide over calm waters in a kayak, or catch a glimpse of majestic sea creatures. These activities provide unforgettable ways to connect with Hawaii’s stunning marine life and crystal-clear waters.

Scuba diving in Hawaii gives you a peek into an amazing  underwater world . Kona’s calm waters are perfect for beginners. Imagine floating alongside colorful fish, seeing turtles up close, and maybe even encountering dolphins.

To start your adventure under the sea, you’ll need lessons from a  certified instructor . They’ll teach you everything from using your breathing apparatus to moving in the water.

Hawaii offers some of the best diving spots  around, including unique experiences like swimming with manta rays at night.

Trust me, learning how to scuba dive here is something you won’t regret!

snorkeling on the big island of hawaii

Taking a  private snorkel tour  in Kona is a special experience. You get to explore the water with just your group and a guide. This means you can see the sea life up close without lots of other people around.

Fair Wind Cruises offers these private trips that fit all skill levels. They even let you cancel for free if you do it 24 hours ahead of time.  Kealakekua Bay  is where they take you, known as the best place for snorkeling in Hawaii.

The water is clear, and there’s so much to see under the surface! As someone who has seen many spots around Hawaii, this one stands out because of its beauty and rich marine life.

Kealakekua Bay  is a must-see. This bay is not just water; it’s history and nature together. You can rent a kayak early in the morning. This time is best because the water is calm, and it’s not too hot yet.

As you go, look down into clear water to see fishes and maybe even dolphins! Plus, seeing  Captain Cook Monument  from your kayak gives you a unique view most don’t get from land.

During your journey, pay a visit to Kona’s Ali’i Drive for cultural appreciation and shopping opportunities.

At this location, you can acquire a distinctive Aloha shirt or visit the lively night market at Uncle Robert’s for live music and indigenous crafts.

This locale serves as an excellent source for acquiring a memorable artifact from your trip. Continue your exploration and uncover further riches on the Big Island!

hawaiian attire aloha shirt on aloha friday

A trip to Hawaii isn’t complete without getting an  Aloha shirt . These shirts show off  bright colors and tropical patterns . They come from  Polynesian, Tahitian, and Japanese fabrics .

This makes each shirt a piece of art. You can find them at  Reyn Spooner stores at Queen’s Market Place and Parker Ranch Center in Waimea .

If you become a member at the museum, you get free entry for a year and discounts on purchases like these shirts.

So, grab one to take home a bit of Hawaii with you!

Kona’s Ali’i Drive is a must-visit for shopping. It ranks #17 out of 118 activities in Kailua-Kona. Here, you will find the  Kona Inn Shopping Village . Its beautiful setting makes shopping enjoyable.

You can buy things like Aloha shirts and gifts to take home. With 413 excellent reviews, many visitors love this place, making it a top spot on the list of the best places on the Big Island.

I have walked down Ali’i Drive many times during my trips to Hawaii. The shops offer lots of  local crafts and foods .

Try Kona coffee or grab a shaved ice as you look around. This street shows the best of what Kailua-Kona has to offer – right by the sea, with views that are hard to beat.

You should visit Uncle Robert’s for a fun night out. This place is famous for its  live music and night market . It sits along a rocky coastline, adding to the vibe. People come here to enjoy good food and lively tunes.

Uncle Robert’s gives you a taste of local life on the Big Island. You can find everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts at the market. The open-air music venue brings everyone together under the stars.

It’s a must-see spot if you’re looking for something unique to do in Hawaii.

visiting historic hilo on the big island

Hilo, on the east side of the island, offers a more laid-back and authentic shopping experience compared to the big resorts closer to Kona.

You can stroll through Hilo Farmers Market , which is one of the best places to find fresh produce, local crafts, and handmade souvenirs.

Along the coast, you’ll also discover charming shops selling everything from Hawaiian art to unique clothing.

Visiting Historic Hilo gives you a taste of the Big Island’s local culture, with plenty of opportunities to bring home a special piece of Hawaii.

The Big Island of Hawaii offers so many unique experiences, from exploring volcanoes to swimming with manta rays at night.

Whether you’re hiking through lush valleys or relaxing on a black sand beach , the island has something for everyone. Looking for more Big Island activities ? Consider taking a Big Island helicopter tour or visiting Rainbow Falls .

If you’re planning a Big Island vacation , think about what your favorite adventure might be. What unique spot are you most excited to visit? No matter where you go, Hawaii’s Big Island is waiting to surprise you.

It’s the perfect place to ask any questions and to be inspired for your trip to Hawaii!

unique things to do on the big island - pin

There are plenty of exciting things to do in Kona! Some unique experiences include visiting the Kona Brewing Company for a tour and tasting, exploring the Kona Cloud Forest Sanctuary, and snorkeling along the Kona coast. The Ocean Rider Seahorse Farm is also a fascinating attraction south of downtown Kona.

The best place to stay on the Big Island depends on your preferences. Kona offers many resorts and is great for beach lovers, while Hilo is perfect for those who want to explore the rainforest and waterfalls. The Sheraton Kona Resort is a popular choice for those who want to stay on the Kona side. For a unique experience, consider staying in a vacation rental in one of the smaller towns around the island.

Coffee lovers will enjoy visiting Kona coffee farms, where you can take tours and taste some of the world’s best coffee. The Kona Coffee Living History Farm is a great place to learn about the history and process of coffee production. Many farms offer tours that allow you to see the entire process from bean to cup.

Coconut Island, also known as Mokuola, is a small island in Hilo Bay. It’s one of my favorite things to recommend because it’s a great place for a picnic, swimming, or just relaxing. The island is connected to the mainland by a footbridge and offers beautiful views of Hilo and the surrounding area.

The Big Island offers some of the most unique beach experiences in Hawaii. You can visit Punalu’u Black Sand Beach to see sea turtles, relax on the green sand beach at Papakolea, or enjoy the pristine white sand beaches like Hapuna Beach. Each offers a different and unforgettable experience.

The best way to experience volcanic activity is by visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. You can hike through lava tubes, see steam vents, and potentially witness active lava flows. For a truly unique experience, consider taking a helicopter tour to see the volcanic landscape from above.

Yes, the Big Island has rich cultural heritage. You can visit Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park to learn about ancient Hawaiian customs, explore the Puako Petroglyph Archaeological Preserve, or attend a traditional luau to experience Hawaiian food, music, and dance.

Day 1: Arrival

Arrival at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, on the Island of Oahu.

Exploring the island at your leisure is by far the best way to see all that Hawai'i has to offer. I always recommend renting a car in Hawai'i.

Take a quick, but very scenic drive to Oahu’s North Shore and check in to your hotel, The Ritz-Carlton O‘ahu, Turtle Bay .

Dinner at Beach House by Roy Yamaguchi , onsite at hotel

Day 2-3: Relax, Explore & Eat

Enjoy complimentary breakfast included (when booked with a FORA advisor).

Options to fill your days:

Relax on the property, drink by the pool, take a dip at the beach or leverage your $100 USD resort credit towards an onsite activity - options include Horseback Riding, Paddleboarding, Snorkeling, Pickleball and Bike Rentals!

Book a Spa Service at the onsite spa ( another way to leverage your resort credit) Offering treatments both indoors + outdoors (plus, top it off with some complimentary champagne to celebrate)

Feeling like leaving the hotel for a bit? Head east for another scenic drive along the North Shore!

Khuku: My personal favorite stop is the town of Kahuku. Just a short drive from the hotel, you will find the popular Khuku Roadside Food Court - aka food trucks galore! This outdoor food court simply can’t be beat when it comes to the quantity of food trucks, the diversity of cuisine offered and the quality of the food (everything from desserts to shrimp to loaded fries!) My personal favorites are Giovanni’s “Aloha Shrimp” Truck and Seven Brothers at the Mill

Lāʻie: Pick up some food and head to Lāʻie Point State Wayside to enjoy your to-go meal overlooking the ocean from the lookout point! Afterwards spend some time visiting Polynesian Cultural Center in Lāʻie

Dinner at Alaia , another incredible dining option onsite at Ritz-Carlton Oahu, Turtle Bay.

Day 4: Waikiki

It’s time to head to your next destination - the iconic neighborhood of Waikiki!

Spend the day making a ton of pit stops along the way. Here are my suggestions:

Grab Breakfast on the road!

Kuilima Farm Stand (opens at 9am everyday) where you will find a wide array of fresh fruit and fruit bowls

Ted’s Bakery - craving a breakfast sandwich or fresh pastry? Look no further!

Stop at Banzai Pipeline to watch surfers at one of the most popular surf beaches in the world

Head to Shark’s Cove, a rocky coastal area with tidal pools swarming with small fish - this is a perfect spot for snorkeling (plus showers and restrooms to freshen up before moving on!)

Grab Lunch in Pupukea at their Roadside Food Court.

Sunrise Shack - Shark’s Cove - here you will find organic coffees, fresh smoothie bowls, and health-focused snacks.

Aji Limo Truck - a Peruvian Japanese fusion food truck outpost.

North Shore Tacos - dare I say the best Tacos on the island?!

Visit Waimea Falls

A mostly flat, paved trail will lead you to Waimea Falls. The relatively short and easy walk takes you past a variety of flora, such as giant ferns and lily ponds, and culturally significant archaeological sites including a series of reconstructed Hawaiian Hales (houses). When you reach the falls, take a dip in the clear water to cool off!

Drive to Laniakea Beach, another great spot for snorkeling AND have a possible turtle sighting!

Walk + shop around the town of Hale’iwa

Grab drinks/dinner. Some recommendations include:

Uncle Bo's Haleiwa

Teddy's Bigger Burgers

Banzai Sushi Bar

Check-in to your hotel on Waikiki beach. My favorite include:

The Royal Hawaiian, A Luxury Collection Resort

Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa

Day 5: Hike

Take a Hike! – I mean that literally :)

Hike Diamond Head: A Beginner-type hike, iconic to Oahu.

Head to Island Brew Coffee House for a post-hike breakfast

Drive along the coast and relax at the beach: My personal favorite, Halona Beach Cove. Here you can relax, swim, cliff jump and see Halona Blowhole!

Dinner in Waikiki

Paia Fish Market, Waikiki

Duke's Waikiki

OR at one of your hotels onsite restaurants

Day 6: The Big Island

Breakfast at hotel overlooking Waikiki Beach OR grab coffee and pastries at Island Vintage Coffee Waikiki

Book a mid-morning private surf lesson on Waikiki Beach (available throughout the day with 1-hour or 1.5-hour options!)

OAHU → BIG ISLAND

Take an afternoon flight to Kona Airport

My favorite hotels on the Island of Hawai’i / Big Island include:

Fairmont Orchid - Hawaii

Grab dinner onsite at your hotel!

Day 7: Kona

Start the day by grabbing a local favorite: Malasadas - from Manuela Malasada Co. in Waimea.

Then kayak to Captain Cook’s Monument.

Afterwards, head to the town of Kona to shop, relax, explore and dine! (If you need a coffee pick-me-up, I suggest HiCO – Hawaiian Coffee )

Don’t miss grabbing a beer flight at Kona Brewery : Many beers offered here are only available on the island :) Try them all – you won’t be disappointed. For a little food – The on-site pub serves handcrafted pizzas, plus other items (I suggest the pizzas!) Plus, don’t forget to pick up some merch to rep Kona Brewing back home!

Other Dining/Drinking options in Kona include:

Sushi Sam’s - the best sushi on the island, hands down (really, one of the best restaurants, period).

Willie’s Hot Chicken - inspired by the iconic Nashville hot chicken tradition, Willie’s has quickly become a go-to spot in Kona for both locals and visitors.

Quinn’s Almost by the Sea - Quinn’s is a cross between an old-timey seafood restaurant and a classic American beach bar.

Izakaya Shiono Kona - offers a laid-back vibe, perfect for a casual lunch of authentic Japanese food, sushi & homemade ramen noodles. (Plus, tons of Sake!).

Magic’s Beach Grill - located directly on the water, this is a perfect spot to have a craft cocktail and do some people watching.

Jackie Rey’s Ohana Grill - just the right mix of fine dining and aloha casual. (My suggestion: start with their Mac-Nut Ahi Tartare!!).

Huggo’s On the Rocks - offering an awesome happy hour in a super fun atmosphere, with live entertainment.

Day 8-10: Island Adventures

Complimentary breakfast at your hotel (included when booking with a FORA Advisor)

Or A few suggestions to fill up your last 3 days:

Head to the Southernmost Point of the US. (Park at Green Sand Beach Parking lot - then locals will transport you down further for $15 pp each way or you can hike it!)

Take a Helicopter Tour to see the waterfalls of the islands from above

Check off a National Park. Head to Volcano National Park for an unforgettable hike.

Hit up Eagle’s Lighthouse Cafe for some pre/post-hike fuel.

Book a Sunset + Stargazing Tour of Mauna Kea

Craving a beer? Check out Big Island Brewhaus in the lovely town of Waimea. (Plus, it's a great neighborhood to walk around and support local businesses!)

Head to ‘Akaka Falls State Park for epic waterfalls views, just a short walk from the parking lot!

Hit the road for a self-guided tour of the many Coffee Plantations and farms around the Island. Some of my favorites include:

Sunshower Farms

Uncle Kimo’s Coffee Shop

Holualoa Kona Coffee Co.

Explore the Kailua-Kona Area in a Day

Kailua-kona 1-day itinerary suggestions.

Kailua Kona also referred to as "Kona" for short is located in the western region of Hawaii, the Big Island . Its warm and sunny weather has made it one of the most exciting and lively places on the western side of the island. It is usually dry and receives minimal rain.

As the center of attraction, Kailua Kona is bursting with tourists and an abundance of activities you can experience.

In this article, we give you a list of things you can enjoy in Kailua Kona if you only have a day.

How to use our Big Island itineraries for your trip

Big island of hawaii 'pack-and-go' wayfinder guides for daily excursions.

Ultimately, we’ve designed our Big Island of Hawaii itineraries around a set number of on-island Big Island days: offering one (this page), two, three, four, five, six, and seven-day itineraries for exploring the island, soaking in the best sights, and ensuring your precious time (and potentially money) on the Big Island are used wisely. We’ve tried to balance our itineraries between those who seek adventure and those looking to find a good beach and relax. Overall, we want your experience to be exactly what you’ve dreamed of when planning your Big Island of Hawaii trip.

For each island, including the Big Island, we’ve attempted to split up the itinerary days by sorting attractions according to their geographic proximity; i.e., on Volcano day, you’d explore the best of the Big Island's Volcano region attractions, hiking trails, and activities. Our itineraries are not meant to be followed consecutively necessarily, which would probably be exhausting, but instead as a grab-and-go resource for ‘mapping’ your trip - think of us as a Wayfinder’s guide to the Big Island of Hawaii . We always like to travel by making day-by-day plans, putting the most important attractions and activities (the must-see and do) upfront, and if the weather doesn’t cooperate one of those days, we switch that day with another. That way, we always get to the important stuff first, and if we have to skip anything, it’s ideally the minor attractions only.

Must See Kailua-Kona Sights & Attractions

Pu'uhonua o honaunau - place of refuge.

Pu'uhonua o Honaunau, also called a "Place of Refuge", holds historical significance. Dating back in history, this was a place of forgiveness. Those who had broken ancient laws or stepped foot in forbidden sacred places came here seeking reconciliation. Here, they would be pardoned by a priest and excused for their wrongdoings. Today, Pu'uhonua o Honaunau is a national historical park, but it is still viewed as a sacred space that is tranquil and calm. To arrive here, it is a 45-minute scenic drive from Kona.

Saddle Road

Saddle Road is a highway that offers a scenic drive from Hilo to Kona. Along the way, you will witness a beautiful contrast in ecosystems and landscapes ranging from foggy deserts to tropical forests. The driving duration may vary for some, but the stunning views, such as the picturesque snow tops of the volcanoes Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa make the ride quite pleasurable.

Ahuena Heiau

Ahuena Heiau is an ancient temple recognized for peace, prayer, and its divine position to the sun. It is a "chosen place" that rests prominently behind the King Kamehameha Hotel. Like any other historical edifice, it has survived various circumstances over the years. However, it has been restored to ensure that its true essence remains intact. At Ahuena Heiau, you will enjoy the warmth of the sun, the energy it brings, and the beauty that flows both in and out of this beautiful temple.

Mokuaikaua Church

The Christian faith was initially brought to Hawaii by missionaries in the 1820s. It is also during this time that Mokuaikaua Church’s first congregation was formed. Following this in 1838, Mokuaikaua Church was erected. It is recognized as the first Christian church in Hawaii.

Mokuaikaua Church is in the Kailua Village on Ali’l Drive, surrounded by touches of greenery. This building has withstood fires and the trials of time, but its construction remains reminiscent of its deep-rooted historical past.

Its congregation is still active and is welcoming and friendly to visitors. So, if you wish to attend a service after observing the building’s composition, you are welcome to do so on a Sunday during its service hours.

Must See Kailua-Kona Beaches

Manini’owali beach (kua bay).

Manini’owali Beach also known as Kua Bay is in Kailua Kona just off of the Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway near mile marker 88. This beach is very accessible due to its paved roads, and it is one of the most beautiful beaches in Kona. It has clean, transparent blue waters and a surrounding view that is magnificent. Here, you can sunbathe on white sands, relish in the splendor of its turquoise waters, or snorkel below the water to observe life undersea.

Makalawena/Pu’u Ali’i Beach

Makalawena/Pu’u Ali’i Beach is another prominent place in Kailua Kona located off the hiking trail near Kona Coast State Park. It has been called a place of nirvana. Although a bit challenging to get to, the reward far exceeds its strains. Here, you will enjoy pleasant moments while witnessing stunning views as well as the beautiful turquoise waters that are always breathtaking in Hawaii. Along with its marvelous wonders, you will also observe sea turtles lounging on rocks and welcoming the sun's rays.

Why You Should Visit the Kailua Kona Area

The Big Island has so much to explore, and Kailua Kona is at its heart. In Kona, there is never a dull moment as it is always bursting with liveliness. Its warm weather continually provides the perfect weather for adventures. Tourists and individuals alike will find its surge of activities to be exciting and unquestionably thrilling. Every memory made here is remarkable as Kona's exceptional views, and powerful energy makes it the perfect hub for vacationers.
