Las Adidas Terrex Voyager 21 Travel son unas zapatillas de trekking enfocadas al viaje, como su propio nombre indican. Son muy ligeras, con materiales muy transpirables y que se pueden compactar para ocupar poco espacio en la maleta.

Es una zapatilla ideal para llevar en viajes en los que vamos a caminar por todo tipo de terrenos . Son perfectas para llevar como único par de zapatillas, ya que son adecuadas para patear la ciudad, usarlas en trekking moderados, en trails cortos y todo tipo de actividades estivales, incluso con agua.

Desde que salieron a la venta hace escasos meses, las Terrex Voyager 21 Travel han sido de las zapatillas más vendidas, indicativo de la gran demanda que hay en el mercado por unas zapatillas multiaventura de este tipo.

Un primer vistazo

Lo primero que hay que aclarar es que estas Terrex Voyager son diferentes a las Terrex Climacool que la marca ya tiene descatalogadas en nuestro país. Son parecidas en diseño, aunque las Climacool tenían una suela Stealth con agarre optimizado para el agua y con tejido Climacool para un secado muy rápido. Eran unas zapatillas pensadas para venturas acuáticas.

Las Adidas Terrex Voyager que ahora nos ocupan no tienen ninguna de estas dos cosas, aunque mantienen en cierta medida el espíritu multiaventura por lo versátiles que son, pudiendo usarlas en múltiples deportes y situaciones.

Este nuevo modelo ha sido fabricado por completo con materiales reciclados , y presenta un chasis de material sintético, reforzado en la punta con piel de ante, y con una malla textil transpirable en la parte superior. Esta zona superior es muy flexible, y la zapatilla se compacta para ocupar poco espacio en una mochila o una maleta.

Son muy ligeras, con un peso de 660 gramos el par, siendo esta es su principal virtud . A pesar de la ligereza de la zapatilla se siente bien hecha, resistente y con el empleo de buenos materiales. Después de darles caña durante un día de kayak y trekking, han resistido sin mayor problema y no se han ensuciado mucho, así que siéntete tranquilo si eliges alguno de los colores claros.

El sistema de lazada es de tipo bungee , heredado de zapatillas de trail y con cordones elásticos. La lengüeta cuenta también con tiradores elásticos por dentro para adaptarla a pies anchos y estrechos, sin que moleste en ninguno de los dos casos.

En cuanto a la suela, Adidas ha dispuesto una suela exterior de goma a la que ha llamado Traxion. La suela cuenta con los habituales tacos para el agarre en todo tipo de superficies, aunque son unos tacos muy pequeños. La suela llega hasta la puntera para proteger la zona delantera del pie de los impactos.

La mediasuela es de EVA y ofrece un nivel de amortiguación ligera . El interior de la zapatilla está reforzado con acolchado en zonas sensibles, especialmente en la zona del talón, y está pensada para que puedas usarla con o sin calcetines.

Las Adidas Terrex Voyager 21 Travel en acción

Dado el carácter versátil y todoterreno de estas zapatillas pensé que una salida en kayak más un pequeño trekk en un día muy caluroso serían un buen campo de pruebas para comprobar su transpirabilidad, comodidad y comportamiento al mojarse.

Las Adidas Terrex Voyager 21 Travel cumplen sobradamente su objetivo como zapatilla de trekking y multiaventura . Aunque no tienen ningún nivel de protección frente al agua, no hay problema si se mojan un poco, ya que se secan bastante rápido si les da el sol. Así pues, pude llevarlas puestas encima del kayak y proseguir luego con la caminata sin tener que andar con calzado de repuesto.

Son unas zapatillas que también destacan por su comodidad, pudiendo usarlas con o sin calcetines . El refuerzo de espuma en el talón y la lengüeta ofrecen un nivel de confort excelente y evitan cualquier atisbo de rozadura o ampolla.

El sistema de lazada es otra de sus virtudes, siendo extremadamente fácil de usar . Los cordones elásticos permiten un ajuste fuerte o más holgado, a gusto de cada cual, sin que eso cause una presión excesiva en el empeine. A la hora de quitar las zapatillas es también super cómodo y rápido, un sistema genial para agilizar los cambios de calzado entre terrenos.

Probablemente su punto menos fuerte es en cuanto a absorción de impactos . Las Adidas Terrex Voyager 21 Travel son unas zapatillas estupendas para salidas de trekking de nivel moderado, sobre terreno no demasiado técnico ni pedregoso. La suela Traxion tiene un buen agarre pero no es comparable con el agarre que ofrecen las mejores botas de montaña, así que tenlo en cuenta. En terrenos muy pedregosos y empinados vas a echar en falta mayor tracción y mayor protección en la suela y en los laterales.

En este sentido, las Terrex Voyager son también unas zapatillas aptas para trail running, siempre que este sea de trayectos cortos y en terreno asequible . Desde luego no imagino realizar con ellas trails muy largos y con descensos muy técnicos, sobre todo porque la amortiguación puede quedarse escasa en ese tipo de situaciones.

En cualquier caso no es ese su cometido. Está claro que son unas zapatillas de viaje, para machacar caminando tanto en la ciudad como en el campo o en la playa . De hecho, su diseño no desentona si las usamos con bermudas, camiseta o polo, con lo que sirven como único par de zapatillas para viajes de turismo donde también tengamos previsto practicar algún deporte outdoor.

Mis conclusiones

Las Adidas Terrex Voyager 21 Travel son unas zapatillas multiaventura que cumplen de sobras el objetivo para el que han sido diseñadas. Son transpirables, son cómodas y son tan ligeras que por momentos ni piensas que las llevas puestas . Y aunque no tienen membrana impermeable, su malla textil se seca rápido cuando está expuesta al sol.

Son las zapatillas perfectas para llevar en la maleta y usarlas en todo tipo de situaciones durante un viaje variado : haciendo turismo en la ciudad, en carreras de trail ocasionales, para montar en bici, en trekkings ni demasiado largos ni demasiado exigentes, en todo tipo de actividades combinadas de remo+trekking e incluso como un único par de zapatillas en cualquier tipo de viaje mochilero.

Su punto más débil es el nivel de amortiguación y de absorción de impactos, cosa lógica por otra parte en una zapatilla que está pensada para otra cosa. Pero en definitiva, si buscas unas zapatillas cómodas, transpirables y multiusos para tu viaje de este verano, estas son unas perfectas candidatas.

You are free to go wherever you want within validity period of your visa. However, your St Petersburg hotel will most likely impose a penalty on you since they have issued visa support documents for 21 days. Check with them.

For sure check with your hotel. It is one thing if you, for example, stay there maybe 14 days, another if this ends up being maybe 3-4...that is, aside from strict rules that might apply, they could clearly get the idea that you "used" them. I know in several cases i have changed a reservation by a day or so, and my hotels did not whack me with any stiff fees. For sure, if you totally cancel as is clearly (usually) stated on web sites, you would end up paying an arm and a leg (or maybe just a calf and a forearm!)...

Just curious, could you provide any prooflink to that? I understand that some hotels might want to charge a nominal fee, but taking an arm and a leg from someone who fell ill and had to cancel the trip? Seriously?

I am not sure about illness, but most the web sites (and also on the form they ask you to submit). I have seen state up to about $100 cancellation fee...agin, this is total cancel. Admittedly, this is for 3-4 star, Western-brand hotels.

If someone wants to chance this, I wish them luck. Again, I do not believe they get this mean if you change a wee bit. I am also guessing if maybe you were a "valued member" (Platinum, etc.), you could probably talk to the mother ship and get them to waive.

Note that I forgot about the ruble plunge, so these charges - 3000 rubles - are not as bad as they used to be when the ruble was 30, not 67. BUT, this is PER PERSON. So. If only one person, maybe like a hand or a couple of fingers... ;-)

Admittedly this is Marriott...could not find the visa support forms on other sites.

Thanks for the clarification! So the bottom line is, before planning to use a hotel for visa support and then cancel on them, check the fine print in their visa support policy.

The Russian capital is a dazzling mix of medieval churches, Soviet skyscrapers, art galleries, sushi bars, nightclubs and bath-houses. Benjamin Wegg-Prosser selects its 25 most compelling attractions:

1. Turandot

It's easy to believe reports that US$40 million was spent on creating the interior of this restaurant. Spread over 14 rooms, it includes homages to Louis XVI, the Ming Dynasty and imperial Russia. The Asian fusion menu reflects the chinoiserie adorning the main dining room, whose centrepiece is a mechanical golden peacock that rotates as the all-female orchestra plays. St Basil's Cathedral

2. St Basil's Cathedral

The recently restored onion domes shine out from the top of the cathedral which marks the eastern border of the Red Square. Napoleon's troops ransacked the building, and it was once scheduled for demolition by Stalin. Today it's the jewel in the crown of the Russian Orthodox Church. The icons inside are well worth inspecting, but even better is the people-watching outside: young couples have their picture taken with the domes in the background on their wedding day. Ever wondered where the statues of Soviet heroeswere dumped when Communism collapsed? Many of them can be found in the grounds of the new Tretyakov gallery The most intimidating figure is that of Felix Dzerzhinsky, founder of the Cheka - the organisation that was to become the KGB. His statue was toppled in the aftermath of the failed coup of August 1991 and removed from Lubyanka ploshchad. It calls itself a 'boutique hotel', but with 92 rooms the Golden Apple wouldn't get away with that description west of Warsaw. Given the size of most Moscow hotels, however, the title is deserved. The price of accommodation in the city is hard to stomach, but this one is one of few places where the rates can probably be justified. You'll understand how marking the defeat of Germany in 1945 has become a form of state religion when you visit this stunning museum dedicated to World War II. It's set at the heart of Park Pobedy (Victory Park) and includes an art gallery, a hall of remembrance and some fantastic exhibits. Highlights for any history buff include the Nazi declaration of surrender and the table and chairs used by Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill during the 1943 Tehran conference. 6. Gorky's house

Despite falling in and out with the Communist Party throughout his career, Maxim Gorky was one of the Soviet era's most important authors. He was rewarded with this stunning house when he returned to Moscow from exile in Italy. The Art Nouveau building was originally the home of Ryabushinsky, an oligarch who fled to France as the Bolsheviks took power. Arguably the most influential political figure of the 20th century lies embalmed in a building that is most recognisable as the place from which Communist Party bosses used to watch military parades in Red Square. The authorities maintain that the body really is Lenin's and that its wax-like appearance is due to the embalming chemicals. Spread across 180 stations, Moscow's underground rail system is a tribute to Soviet engineering and new Russian efficiency. With trains running every 90 seconds and the roads permanently clogged with traffic, the metro is the city's most practical form of transport. The earliest stations are architectural masterpieces, with Ploshchad Revolutsii, Kievskaya and Komsomolskaya really standing out. Visitors are advised to learn a little of the Cyrillic alphabet to help decipher the station names.

The State Tretyakov Gallery

9. The State Tretyakov Gallery

These galleries - in two separate locations - house the best examples of Russian art from before and after the revolution. Most of the pieces in the old Tretyakov (at 10 Lavrushinsky pereulok) were in private hands before being nationalised in 1917. Its collection includes 'Rublev's Trinity', said to be the finest remaining Russian icon. The new Tretyakov (at 10 Krymsky Val) showcases all the main Russian art periods that followed the revolution and includes well-known works such as Petrov-Vodkin's Bathing of a Red Horse (pictured). 10. 02 Lounge

Under a glass dome on the top floor of the Ritz-Carlton, Moscow, this bar has the city's best close-up views of the Kremlin. The food menu includes sushi rolls and sashimi. Shop & Bar Denis Simachev

11. Shop & Bar Denis Simachev

Denis Simachev is Moscow's Malcolm McLaren, and his bar has its own fashion store. Simachev is one of a small band of cultural entrepreneurs who have created a genuinely new, 'modern Russian' brand. The main conversation piece in the bar is the mural in which the world leaders of the early 21st century are shown dining in a prison canteen. Having opened after the financial crisis, this bar sets a more modest tone than its competitors. But it still manages a few superlatives, including stunning modern art and the longest bar in Moscow, at 30 metres. It's going after the forty-something market, or the 'mature hipster' as the management would have it. The bartenders are reputed to be the best in town. 13. The Most

In the heart of Moscow's central night-life district, ]this swanky nightspot includes a bar, restaurant and basement nightclub. The club's cavernous room is spanned by mechanical bridges, an architectural play on words: most means 'bridge' in Russian. The venue entered football folklore when Roman Abramovich chose it as the place to drown his sorrows following Chelsea's defeat by Manchester United in the 2008 Champions League final held in Moscow. Nobu Moscow

14. Nobu Moscow

The owners took the brave decision to open this outpost of the Japanese restaurant at the apex of the financial crisis. They have been rewarded for their courage by securing it a reputation as the place for oligarchs to lunch. Since the fall of the USSR, Japanese food has become a staple diet for Muscovites, and the launch of Nobu was a natural next step. The company's owners had been fending off proposals for a Russian branch for more than a decade, so the restaurant's success is no great surprise. 15. Bosco Café

This Italian restaurant offers three essential services: an excellent watering hole in which to rest after exploring GUM, the huge shopping mall which runs along the northern side of the Red Square, opposite the Kremlin; fine views of Lenin's tomb; and an excellent cappuccino. 16. Café Pushkin

This is the first port of call for anyone who wants to experience quality Russian food. At first glance the building appears to be a stunningly preserved 19th-century townhouse; on closer inspection the façades are entirely fake. But this lack of authenticity is not reflected in the food, especially the outstanding meat pies and dumplings. Eliseevskiy

17. Eliseevskiy

This is the Moscow equivalent of the food hall at Harrods. Located in a late 18th-century mansion with stunning interiors, it was renamed 'Gastronom No 1' during the Soviet period but has now gone back to its pre-revolutionary name. In recent years new branded supermarkets with a fine selection of goods have started to overshadow this grande dame , but it's still a special place to visit. Bolshoi Theatre

18. Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi stages operas and ballets, was the venue for Swan Lake 's première in 1877 and is home to the best-known dance company in the world. It is in fact two different theatres. The original stage is currently undergoing renovations and will not reopen until 2013 (eight years after it closed); but the new theatre has regular performances. Before the USSR fell, nearly everything we in the West knew about Russia came out of his building the home of the principal state-run news agency, TASS. 20. Stalin's skyscrapers

There are seven of these so-called 'wedding cake' buildings dotted across the city. Their mock-Gothic style would not look out of place in Gotham City. Stalin ordered their construction in the aftermath of World War II (and made use of free labour in the form of German POWs) to put his capital on an architectural par with the great cities of North America. The largest and most memorable is the Moscow State University building on Vorobyovy Gory (Sparrow Hills). The Hilton Moscow Leningrandskaya is housed in another.

Set between Kuznetsky Most and Petrovka ulitsa, this is Arkady Novikov's most recent venture. To Muscovites, Novikov needs no introduction: he is the man behind most of the city's poshest restaurants. Legend has it that he started out flipping burgers in a Moscow McDonald's and caught the entrepreneurial bug. His latest outlet offers modern Slavonic cooking. Moscow conservatory

22. Moscow conservatory

Russians take their classical music very seriously, and nowhere is more serious than the Moscow Conservatory. It's a series of concert halls and a school rolled into one. Every Russian classical star, be they composer or musician, has played or taught here, including Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky and Richter. Tickets are relatively easy to get, either from the box office or from babushkas who sell them for a small profit on the street outside. Pasternak's house

23. Pasternak's house

In Peredelkino, a small village 25 minutes by train from Kievsky station, is the dacha were Boris Pasternak lived for the last two decades of his life. The house was turned into a museum after his death, but his family still live in the grounds. On the first floor you can sit at the desk where he completed Dr Zhivago ; and on the ground floor you can see the early Soviet TV and fridge of which he was the proud owner. Izmailovsky Park

24. Izmailovsky Park

No trip to Moscow is complete without haggling for a bust of Lenin or a set of matryoshka dolls, and the only place to do it properly is Izmailovsky Park, at the metro station of the same name. The market, set in a 16th-century royal estate, is open every weekend and has a great variety of decent souvenirs.

Sanduny Banya

The 19th-century decor of the Sanduny Banya bath-house is reminiscent of a gentlemen's club in London's St James's. But the experience is uniquely Russian, as are the felt hats worn to protect your hair from the steam. The steam room is a vast, wood-panelled chamber with a huge open oven. Foreigners are made welcome by regulars, who are happy to inflict a beating with birch leaves (more refreshing than it sounds). Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.

Part Running Vest, Part Backpack, All Function: Terrex ‘AEROREADY' Speed Hiking Backpack Review

What do you get when you combine a running vest with a lightweight pack? It turns out you get something so functional for both daily life and adventures on the trail, that I’m now constantly carrying it for both. I didn’t expect to like the adidas Terrex AEROREADY Speed Hiking Backpack as much as I have. But it’s been steadily growing on me.

That's mainly because this flexible little pack comes with more surprise pockets than Mary Poppins ‘ magic bag. Compared to the multifunctionality necessary for long-term backpacking adventures, running packs and vests have a more straightforward purpose: to keep you moving. The design of the Terrex AEROREADY Speed Hiking Backpack stays laser-focused on that goal. Every pocket is easily accessible without requiring you to stop to rummage around.

I've taken it hiking through the beautiful mountains here in Medellín, Colombia, and I use it three times a day while walking the world's greatest dog: Campana the Ecuadorian street shepherd (my co-tester for this pack). In fact, she asked me the other day why I hadn't ordered one for her as well. Not having a good answer, I reached into one of the pack's many pockets for the dog treats - which seemed a satisfactory response.

In short: For myself, the adidas Terrex AEROREADY Speed Hiking Backpack feels so comfortable I don’t want to take it off. The pack makes you want to test your limits and run farther. Its small size forces you to limit what you stuff inside, yet still offers back support when weighed down. And the shoulder straps have enough pockets to carry everything you might need at your fingertips. If you love trail running but want all your knick-knacks immediately available without stopping for a breather, this pack is a solid choice.

adidas Terrex AEROREADY Speed Hiking Backpack Review

For the record, I didn't know anything about this backpack when I received it.

I’d wanted to try the adidas Terrex Free Hiker 2 trail shoes, but they somehow got lost in the U.S.'s increasingly unreliable mail system. Regardless, the folks over at adidas Terrex seemed to think I might enjoy a running pack. So, the brand sent the adidas Terrex Aeroready Speed Hiking Backpack.

I started out mostly flippant about the pack/running vest crossover. Then I became cautiously interested, and now I am unabashedly in love with it.

Packed With Features, Pockets, Straps

The pack itself, a 15 L, feels wonderful. Clip-on chest tighteners keep it snug like a running vest. Adjustable straps make it flexible for different body types. It weighs next to nothing when empty. And I find it easy to make small adjustments.

Since the chest tighteners merely loop around small pegs on the opposite strap, you can remove them with one hand, swing the pack around, reach into the duffel, and then retighten everything - without ever breaking stride.

The pack’s "AEROREADY" design involves a series of stiff loops meant to keep air flowing between your back and the pack. But I still found myself sweating considerably when running, even while using the ventilated Agravic Trail Running Shirt that came with it.

For me, the magic of this pack is all in the shoulder straps, baby. Both sides of the pack sport two mesh pockets like a running vest. Both have drawcords, and the left has an additional zipper pocket. That is the only zipper on the pack and the obvious place to put my phone and AirPods.

The design is similar to a lot of running vests like some of GearJunkie’s favorites from 2023 - this one just also has a pack-sized compartment on its back.

In my daily life, I use those shoulder stap pockets for doggie bags, treats, and sunglasses, or to store a paper cup and napkin from a morning coffee and pastry I bought at a corner cafe. On the trail, they’re great for energy bars, lip balm and sunscreen, bandanas, compasses, headlamps, or anything else you might want to have at your fingertips.

The adidas Terrex AEROREADY Speed Hiking Backpack should also work well with a hydration pack. There is a compartment inside for one, and a hole to feed the hose out of at the top. But so far, I've relied on water bottles in the side mesh pockets - which are easily reachable while cruising down a steep hill.

Testing With Photography Gear at Cerro Tres Cruces

This nifty pack arrived at a time when I've been exploring new options for outdoor photography. Though it's a snug fit, I can squeeze in my DJI Mini 2 drone , a Sony version of a GoPro, and a Petzl climbing helmet - all into the main 15L compartment. Using the pack to run across town and hike up Medellin’s Parque El Volador resulted in my first drone video .

One mesh side pocket takes care of my LifeStraw Go and an extra bottle of water. Another mesh pocket on the front holds my snacks, bandana, and phone charger. Shoulder strap pockets, meanwhile, keep my phone, sunglasses, and other moment-to-moment necessities within reach at all times.

The pack can feel heavy at times with that much camera equipment, but it's still comfy and secure while running. For extra weight, I just tightened up the shoulder and chest straps, resulting in very little bounciness, even while cruising down steep, rocky hills. That being said, the pack still feels best when it’s got less than 10 to 15 pounds of weight inside.

Areas for Improvement

While its access to everything can’t be beat, the downside of having only one zipper pocket is a concern about losing small objects. Perhaps the backpack’s designers were expecting only pro runners with fancy watch phones to use this pack.

But for me, my phone is always in the pack’s only zipper pocket, located on the left strap. The problem is that’s a vertical pocket, not a horizontal one. So if you forget to close it, things inside tend to fall out. I confess, at one point, my phone fell into a toilet because I forgot to zip that pocket closed.

The only things I worry about losing when running are my keys, phone, and earbuds, all of which end up in the same pocket because it’s the only one with a zipper. I’d love an additional zipper pocket on the inside of the duffel, or on the right strap. It would still be easy to reach stuff while offering some extra security for those “can’t lose” objects.

And, obviously, the fact that this pack is only available in the U.K. is also something of a drawback. Adidas said it does not have plans to release this pack in the U.S. in the future. So if you really want one, you might have to travel to order it.

adidas Terrex AEROREADY Speed Hiking Backpack: A Pack for the Pros?

After using this pack in my daily life for a few months, and on several day hikes, I’ve concluded that this is one of the best backpacks I’ve ever owned. I look forward to taking it traveling, as it’s perfect for wadding up inside a larger backpack before a flight. Casual hikers and trail runners will find plenty to love here, too, with the pack’s flexible design, durable materials, and ample storage options.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see dedicated athletes embrace this as an indispensable part of their training. This $160 pack could go the distance with ultrarunners pushing their bodies to the limit for 100+ miles of rugged terrain. But I'm not cut from the same cloth as Kilian Jornet or Grayson Murphy .

And even if I could pull off those feats of athleticism, who has the time? I have a dog to walk. And given that the pack's plethora of pockets has resulted in more consistent treat-giving - she's not complaining.

Review: Aeroflot Comfort Class, New York-JFK to Moscow

Aeroflot is a Group 3 carrier for Delta SkyMiles. Most of Aeroflot’s Economy Class fares earn 75% or fewer base miles with Delta, but Premium Economy fares booked in W, S and A class earn 100% miles, along with 75% Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) and 20% Medallion Qualifying Dollars (based on distance flown). Subsequently, for a 4,661-mile journey, I would earn 3,496 MQMs, 4,661 Base Miles, and $932 MQDs.

Aeroflot’s website is very easy to use and intuitive. The user interface isn’t the most modern, but it has all of the basic necessities that one needs to complete the booking process in one easy flow. I was satisfied with this purchase and then waited for my flight several months later.

Day of Departure

Comfort Class is only available on Aeroflot’s 777-300ERs, of which it has 15 in service. I would be flying VP-BGB, MSN 41679, built on December 15, 2012, and loaded with two GE90-115B engines. Aeroflot’s 777-300ERs offer 30 seats in Business Class, 48 seats in Comfort and 324 seats in Economy.

My flight was scheduled to leave at 14:25 PM, which, for all intents and purposes, is pretty much a day flight that operates into Moscow: at roughly 8.5 hours of flying time, one reaches SVO slightly prior to midnight New York time. I arrived at JFK slightly after 12 pm, and the check-in lines were already fairly long for the Aeroflot flight. There was no signage for Comfort Class check-in, but I proceeded to the SkyTeam elite and Business Class line and the queue manager happily obliged this. There are also no check-in kiosks available for Aeroflot passengers, but I presume this is because most travelers to Russia from the States must have their documents verified by an agent.

Post-security, I proceeded to the Air France Lounge , which as available for Priority Pass holders.

The Comfort class seat is oriented around two things: the seat and the meal service. In Economy class on Aeroflot’s 777-300ER flights, seating is your standard 3 x 4 x 3 ten abreast. In comfort, however, it is 2 x 4 x 2, offering increased seat width and pitch. Each seat comes with a footrest, leg rest, a “slide-forward” recline thanks to Shell technology, as well as electrical outlets and USB ports. The meal service features the hot menu items that are served in Business class, which is a really nice perk. However, the beverages selection is fairly limited, as only complimentary wine and beer is served in Comfort class.

Finally, each seat comes with the standard 10.6 inch Audio Video on Demand (AVOD) screen, an individual reading lamp and a coat hook. Comfort class passengers can also enjoy increased baggage allowance (2 pieces of checked luggage up to 23KG each, and 1 piece of hand luggage up to 10KG). There are no special headsets (noise canceling or noise-reducing) which I’ve been told is something that is available on other airlines’ Premium Economy classes.

We were offered pre-departure beverages in real glassware, including orange juice or water. I thought it was interesting though that in-flight, all beverages were served in paper cups.

Taxi and take-off were smooth and afforded gorgeous views of New York as we lifted off. The nice thing about the 2 PM departure is that one likely avoids the JFK rush-hour mania that is common in late afternoon evening banks. It was an absolutely perfect day for flying as our route took us straight over Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts, with a perfect view of Boston from the right side of the aircraft.

I had chosen seat 12K, which is the second row from the galley on the right side of the aircraft, facing forward. My seat mate had chosen to move to an open seat on the aisle, which was nice, allowing me to use their vacated personal TV screen to keep tabs on the moving map while I perused the in-flight entertainment options on Aeroflot’s system.

I settled in and created a music video playlist on the In-flight Entertainment (IFE) system, which is very intuitive and super easy to use. The crew handed out the headsets once we were at cruising altitude, which I thought as a bit odd and should have been done on the ground. However, because they weren’t great quality, I used my own instead. As I worked, I reclined in my seat and listened to the videos I had created on my customized jukebox on the IFE screen as I worked.

The first thing that I noticed as I reclined was how comfortable I felt. The footrest and the leg rest were awesome, and the legroom felt just fantastic. Of course, having an empty seat next to me is always a plus, but truthfully speaking, I could see why Economy comfort is absolutely the way to go on a flight that goes Eastbound over the Atlantic.

The first beverage service commenced around 30 minutes in-flight. I had a red wine to start, which was served with some mixed nuts. I honestly had no idea which wine was served, as there were no details on the menu. The only other beverage available, as far as alcohol is concerned, was white wine and Zhiguli Barnoe beer. Non-alcoholic libations included still water, apple, orange and tomato juices, Coca Cola, coke-zero, sprite, coffee and tea.

Menus were distributed on the ground, and I immediately noticed that there would be two full meal services, but both of them would be essentially a lunch service followed by a dinner service. Unlike most transatlantic flights which feature an evening meal and then a continental breakfast affair prior to landing in Europe, this one was designed around the body clocks of Americans, I suppose.

This was the menu for the first meal service:

• Appetizer: Roast beef with cheddar cheese, cherry tomato, and cucumber
• Salad: romaine with cucumber, cherry tomato and cucumber with Caesar dressing
• Main courses: a choice between a beef fillet with truffle cream sauce and Linguine, or roast chicken breast with creamy spinach, celeriac puree, and Demi glacé sauce.
• Dessert: Raspberry cheesecake

The second meal service went as follows:

• Appetizer: smoked salmon, shrimp and cream cheese with caperberry
• Salad: fresh lettuce, cherry tomato and feta with olive oil and vinegar dressing
• Main course: choice between roasted lamb chop with rosemary and Demi glacé, served with pecorino polenta and medley herb vegetables, or grilled red snapper with mashed pumpkin and mixed vegetables served with café de Paris
• Dessert: Brownie with nuts

For the first meal service, I had the beef, which was a relatively small portion along with the linguine and broccoli. The beef itself was a tad overcooked, but the pasta was delicious. I thought the salad was very well presented in a nice Caesar wrap-style with all of the garnishes, and the dessert was absolutely fantastic.

The second meal was served roughly 2 and a half hours from landing in Moscow, and I ordered the fish. It was one of the best dishes I’ve ever had on an airplane. The fish was a bit on the oily side, but the vegetables complemented the pumpkin purée just perfectly. The red snapper itself was well-cooked and succulent. The shrimp and salmon appetizer was very tasty and the salad was incredibly fresh. I still found it interesting that they served us a second meal that was dinner, especially since the main cabin received breakfast: a choice between eggs and pancakes. Oh well!

The crews serving this flight consisted of about 50/50 male and female, and they were a fantastic group of people. They were very prompt, courteous and friendly – I chatted with a few of them in between trips to the galley to stretch my legs or use the lavatory. They would come by each hour with beverages and offered ice cream pops midway through the flight.

The restroom facilities were constantly clean and well-stocked with toothbrush kits. Though the Comfort class does not come with amenity kits, we were given eyeshades and slippers. Duty-free came by after the first meal, but I wasn’t too keen on the selection. Aeroflot doesn’t have much gear for #AvGeeks to purchase! That would be one area of improvement that I might recommend.

Since this was a day flight, I spent most of it catching up on movies. I watched Moonlight, Erin Brockovich, and Fight Club . The IFE selection was bountiful with quality films from the past and present, and across all age ranges and tastes.

I believe there was WiFi available for purchase, but I’d heard that the price was a bit steep.

Our routing took us north over Labrador, the southern tip of Greenland, north of Iceland and over the Norwegian Sea before we hit landfall around Trondheim, Norway. Then, we headed straight to the Scandinavian countries before approaching Russia. It being summertime, the external views afforded breathtaking scenery of Greenland’s glaciers and frozen rivers, as well as the coast of Iceland. I was not on the left side of the aircraft, so I did not get a chance to see the sun, but all-in-all, it was a relatively clear day for flying on both sides of the Atlantic.

We landed at Moscow shortly after 6:00 AM local time. The transit experience at Moscow is relatively seamless. International flights arrive into Terminal D, and we were de-boarded via stairs and bussed to the transit center (which took about 10 minutes). The lines for immigration were extremely short at this hour, and it was a simple division between terminating flights at Moscow (or domestic transfers) and international transfers. You need a visa in order to visit Russia, but if you’re transferring, you simply go through the transfer passport check, along with an additional security screening, and you’re on your way. The short-haul flights leave from Terminals E and F, and while there are about 10 to 15 minutes of walking, it is all relatively doable. For those with Priority Pass access, there are several lounges in this area to use.

The Aeroflot Comfort Class product is great value for the cost of the ticket. I was really impressed by the comfort level of the seat, the quality and quantity of the food, the in-flight entertainment, the attentiveness and service of the cabin crew and the timing of the flight to Moscow. This was my first true Premium Economy class experience on an international long-haul flight, and I would highly recommend it to anyone.
