Full Itinerary

Join us for an unforgettable Jumping Crocodile Cruise tour departing from Darwin, for a thrilling encounter with some of nature’s most fierce and deadly wildlife situated in the natural waterways of the Northern Territory. Australia’s Top End is said to host over 100,000 estuarine crocodiles, largely located in and around Darwin, Adelaide River , and Mary River areas.

Witness the largest and most ancient creature to have walked the earth since the dinosaurs. These primordial beasts grow up to 6 meters in length (the size of a small bus) and can weigh up to 1000kg. The infamous crocodile named “Sweetheart” was captured not far from the Adelaide River after repeatedly chewing motors off the backs of fisherman’s boats and stealing farmers’ cows. Sweetheart, unfortunately, passed away and can now be seen preserved in the Darwin Museum.

Our Jumping Crocodile cruise partners are adeptly trained to ensure the safety of both the crocodiles and passengers at all times. Crocodiles are fed buffalo meat, allowing guests to witness firsthand the powerful and dramatic hunting techniques of an estuarine crocodile. All staff are issued Wildlife Permits by National Parks and Wildlife for our interactions and no animals are harmed in any way during our wildlife interactions.

When in the Northern Territory , beholding the grandeur of a crocodile in person is a must-do experience. The best way to ensure a safe encounter with the world’s largest reptile is by going on a Jumping Crocodile Cruise tour on the Adelaide River. A cruise lets you witness these creatures up-close without compromising safety. Here’s what to anticipate from a Jumping Crocodile Cruise tour from Darwin guided by Autopia Darwin Tours on the Adelaide River.

While crocodiles were once in danger of extinction, you’ll see that these beasts are thriving in northern Australia. Today there are about 150,000 estuarine crocodiles and 100,000 freshwater crocodiles in the region. The 238-kilometre-long Adelaide River is known for its high concentration of these reptiles.

Crocodiles are famed for being the world’s largest reptiles but this is far from the only intriguing thing about these creatures. On a Jumping Crocodile Cruise, you’ll learn countless fascinating facts about crocodiles from their biology to their behavior. Our guides know how to make every cruise both thrilling and enlightening!

You’ll receive live commentary that’s relevant to the crocs you encounter on your cruise, as well as the local ecosystem. It’s the most exciting biology class you’ll ever experience! The wealth of information you’ll learn is well worth the cost of the tour.

Of course, these jumping crocodile cruises aren’t just an educational experience. It wouldn’t be a jumping crocodile cruise without seeing some of these beasts leap into the air. Witness crocs jump for joy to get to the chunks of meat our guides will dangle for them from a stick over the edge of the boat. It’s a guaranteed adrenaline rush!

Although the Jumping Crocodile Cruise on the Adelaide River is mostly about the crocs, you wouldn’t want to miss out on the other wildlife surrounding you. There are over 100 species of other reptiles besides crocodiles . There are also nearly 300 different species of birds, making it a paradise for bird lovers!

There’s no substitute for the close-up view of witnessing wildlife in its natural habitat. On the Adelaide River, you can spot marine life like bull sharks, birds like white-bellied sea eagles, and flying foxes which are some of the largest bats in the world. Rest assured, none of the animals or nature are being disturbed in the process. The experience is completely authentic, resulting in the best photos that you’ll cherish for a lifetime. Aside from the wildlife, the Adelaide River is a stunning sight in itself.

As you venture out on the water amid the warmth of the Northern Territory, it’s essential to ensure your cruise is designed for comfort to maximize your enjoyment. That’s precisely what we offer with our Jumping Crocodile Cruise from Autopia Tours . We’re committed to providing all our guests with a fantastic, relaxing experience on our cruises, guaranteeing plenty of crocodile sightings. Additionally, we’ve taken care of the region’s heat by making sure our cruises are air-conditioned.

Our Jumping Crocodile Cruise is proudly Aboriginal-owned, with proceeds contributing towards the traditional owners of the area. It allows you to not only enjoy an exhilarating adventure but also to make a positive impact with your investment. You can either join this standalone tour or experience the Jumping Crocodile Tour as part of our 1-day Kakadu tour or a Litchfield National Park tour. Jumping Crocs | About Us | Our Boats

Our Jumping Crocodile Cruise

Our cruise boats have hosted many of the world’s best media, from the film crews of a very well known english gentlemen, world famous for his wildlife documentaries, celebrities, and of course the important every day regular guests that make up the bulk of our tours.

Tours running daily at 9am, 11am, 1pm and 3pm.

adelaide river queen ii jumping crocodile cruise

We don’t have minimum numbers on our cruises, so you can be sure that our cruises will always go out. (Check seating availability on our website, we do sell out!) We only close Christmas day, and our causeway entrance is well above the surrounding floodplain, meaning we are not as affected by bad weather as other cruise companies.

Come and see why we are the preferred crocodile cruise option for tour groups from across the globe.

Jumping crocodile cruises on the Adelaide River as we know them today were begun in the 1970s with Stefan’s River Safaris, started by ex-croc hunter Stefan Sebesken when he began to take tourists onto the river on his boat, the Daniella. Stefan entertained his tour guests with his resident crocodile pal, Shonky, by feeding him from his boat and jetty, eventually realising that Shonky was able to jump out of the water for food. Stefan’s River Safaris operated from the area where the current public boat ramp is today, next to the Adelaide River bridge.

adelaide river queen ii jumping crocodile cruise

This paved the way for crocodile cruises as we know them today on the Adelaide River, and have become an iconic attraction for the Top End, thanks to Stefan and Shonky!

Arirrki Aboriginal Corporation of Groote Eylandt purchased Spectacular Crocodile Cruises around 2005 from the previous owner who had ties to Groote Eylandt. Our Neniyuwangkwa (Old man, clan patriarch), Abel Lalara seized the unique opportunity to expand their reach onto the mainland and share their equally unique culture with the rest of the NT.

Built for the Adelaide River

We have two different custom-made vessels for safe, up close, and personal viewing of the crocodiles in the Adelaide River. This allows us to tailor your cruise experience to the best boat for the conditions. Both of our boats offer the best viewing experience on the river with outward-facing seating, meaning That no matter where you sit, your view is of the river and the action, not the back of someone’s head!

Private charters are available on any of our vessels.

adelaide river queen ii jumping crocodile cruise

Purpose-built specifically for our cruises, by one of the best multi-hull boat designers in the world. Its unique stadium-style seating means you’re facing the action, and will always get the best view available. With the boat skipper standing behind you at the rear of the boat, you can be assured that someone is always watching our passengers and looking after your safety, whilst our expert jumper is in front of you handling the animal interactions.

adelaide river queen ii jumping crocodile cruise

The sports car option of the Adelaide River. Its smaller seating capacity, facing out to the action, means you’ll always get the best view. Its smaller size means your tour feels a little bit more intimate and special. With at least two crew on board, you can be assured of your safety. Wildcat allows us to get further down the river and introduce you to the wilds of the Adelaide River floodplains.

Day 1: Darwin Croc Tour - Adelaide River

Come along and join us for one of Darwin’s most iconic tourist attractions… a half-day  Jumping Croc Cruise  on the  Adelaide River,  where you can get up close and personal with some of the world’s most dangerous and aggressive predators out in the wild.

Departing Darwin city, we travel southeast together approximately 60km towards the  Marrakai wetlands,  home to over 280 different types of native birds and 117 different species of reptiles, including the infamous apex beast of prey, saltwater crocodiles.

Australia’s Top End is home to over  100,000 saltwater crocodiles  located predominantly in and around  Darwin, Mary River  and the  Adelaide River  region, so you’re guaranteed to see plenty of magnificent creatures throughout the day in the  Northern Territory’s  naturally occurring waterways.

The saltwater crocodile is the largest reptile in the world and one of the oldest living creatures to walk the planet since the dinosaur age. These prehistoric beasts can grow up to 6 metres long (equivalent to a small bus) and weigh as much as 1000kg! An infamous local crocodile, affectionately nicknamed ‘Sweetheart’, was captured close to the Adelaide River  after repeatedly chewing motors off the back of fisherman’s boats and stealing cows from the local farmers. Unfortunately, Sweetheart passed away in 1979 but has been taxidermied and preserved in the  Darwin Museum.

Our staff are issued Wildlife Permits by National Parks and Wildlife to ensure that no animals are harmed during our interactions with the wildlife.

My partner and I did jumping croc tours , and it was a chance to experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The jumping croc tour takes you on an adventure through some of the Northern Territory’s most beautiful remote outback locations. The croc tour guide shares stories about local wildlife and Aboriginal culture if you travel along. That was a crazy day with a high level of adrenaline and impression. Unbelievable experience

adelaide river queen ii jumping crocodile cruise

That was amazing trip Croc Tours Darwin. I had an unforgettable experience with Wildlife Darwin Tours , which specializes in crocodile tours throughout Darwin. From the moment we arrived at the Adelaide River cruise terminal, our guide was very helpful and knowledgeable about the area and wildlife that can be found there. The tour began with a breathtaking scenic boat ride up Adelaide River where we encountered a variety of unique and interesting animals, from freshwater crocodiles to magpie geese. Our guide provided us with detailed information about each species, which made the tour even more enjoyable. The highlight of the tour for me was the opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the Adelaide River’s crocs on a smaller boat equipped with a giant stick specifically designed for feed the crocs next our vessel. Seeing these prehistoric creatures in their natural habitat was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I highly recommend Adelaide River Croc Tours to anyone looking for an exciting, educational tour in Darwin .

The Northern Territory has always been on my bucket list, and this cruise promised a glimpse into its raw, untamed beauty.

As the vessel glided smoothly down the Adelaide River, the anticipation in the air was palpable. The live commentary began, filling the surroundings with tales of the river's ecosystem and its ancient inhabitants. Each story added depth to the experience, painting a vivid picture of the area.

Then, the moment we'd all been waiting for: a massive crocodile leapt out of the water, its powerful form momentarily suspended in mid-air before splashing back into the murky depths. The sight was awe-inspiring, a stark reminder of nature's raw power and majesty. I felt a mix of thrill and respect for these prehistoric creatures.

The design of the River Queen added to the experience. From the safety of the air-conditioned lower deck,  I felt both secure and immersed in the experience. The upper deck, with its open-air canopy, was perfect for those wanting to feel closer to nature. The gentle breeze, the sounds of the river, and the panoramic views made it a sensory delight.

The Adelaide River Queen II Jumping Crocodile Cruise was more than just a tour; it was a journey into the heart of nature, an experience I'll cherish for years to come.

A short interaction of just a few minutes a day ensures that the crocodiles lose none of their natural survival and hunting instincts. You can almost touch these animals through the thick glass windows of the Adelaide River Queen II or their beautiful skin on the open Pathfinder vessels, and together with an informative commentary this experience will leave you with a balanced and informed view of the Australian saltwater crocodile.
