Rachael Leigh Cook has done all that: She’s been a teen breakout star in an iconic high school comedy (“She’s All That”), transitioned to cringe sponsored movies (“Spirit Halloween”), and made the leap to Hallmark Christmas queen (“Tis the Season to Be Merry”). Now, she’s deftly parlayed her everywoman likability into the sweet made-for- Netflix movie “A Tourist’s Guide for Love.”

Yes, “made-for-Netflix” is a category all on its own. While “The Irishman” is considered to be a Netflix Original, “made-for-Netflix” separates the mass-produced movies like the nearly-perfect “Falling for Christmas” and calming background noise of “Murder Mystery 2” from the real Oscar contenders. It’s a sliding scale of quality under the streaming titan’s content umbrella, and Cook’s latest film, “A Tourist’s Guide to Love,” feels like an adaptation of a sweet viral BookTok romance novel — in the best way possible.

Cook stars as tightly-wound Los Angeles career woman Amanda, who is assigned to go undercover in Vietnam to scope out whether the tour travel company she hires is worth buying out. Just before she jets off to her dream vacation, Amanda is slapped with some unsavory news: Her predictable and practical boyfriend (Ben Feldman) puts their relationship on “hiatus” as he relocates to Ohio. Worse? He doesn’t pop the question like Amanda had expected in her planned-out perfect scenario.

Cue up the steamy Vietnamese tour guide Sinh (Scott Ly), and soon enough, Amanda’s rigid rule-following goes right out the window, much like her neatly-packed luggage that went missing at the airport. And while that sounds predictable, other beats of the film take their own path. “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” could have easily opted for Americanized, voyeuristic quality when it comes to capturing the lushness of Vietnam, or even exoticizing Sinh’s character as a local craving Amanda’s sensibilities while in turn teaching her own to loosen up.

Thankfully, “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” is smarter — and more tasteful — than that.

Amanda does do some “Eat, Pray, Love”-ing during her trip — one that is doomed already by her deceptive reason for the vacation, which could involve buying out Sinh’s family business — but rather, it’s Sinh’s excitement and passion for Vietnamese culture that roots the film, not just the characters’ budding romance. “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” is a road map for how to love adventure abroad, with dashes of Vietnamese trivia and spiritual facts along the way.

Director Steven K. Tsuchida (“Younger,” “Cobra Kai,” “Resort to Love”) doesn’t shy away from shooting the rich cuisine of Vietnam like a CNN travel show reminiscent of Anthony Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown.” Rom-com touchstones are woven in with cultural traditions; a night market scene is used to adorably show Sinh teaching Amanda how to properly bargain, all while he’s slyly imparting wisdoms like if the vendor doesn’t lower the price, purchasing a symbolic phoenix rising scarf just wasn’t meant to be.

Sure, there’s an inherent eye roll here and there — the traffic tip to jet across the street sans crosswalk is to “always move forward, never back” — but Sinh’s effortlessness translates nicely and makes Amanda learn life lessons by way of local customs. As Sinh warns, their trip and impending romance is not a list of tourist attractions or relationship milestones to be checked off; rather, it’s letting the spontaneity of a life-changing adventure come naturally.

A third act love triangle throws a realistic wrench in the wanderlust romance, with Amanda realizing she was too comfortable and therefore too complacent in her “little corner of the world.” This is a rom-com, albeit “made-for-Netflix,” but one that has an important message that more streamers need to hear.

Eirene Tran Donohue penned the script, with Cook producing the feature, along with Joel S. Rice for Muse Entertainment. “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” is the first U.S. film to be almost entirely shot in Vietnam, and marks the first international production to film in Vietnam since the global pandemic. The winning production make a case for more films to be set in Vietnam, hopefully opening up Netflix’s international production presence just as it deepens Cook’s rom-com roots extend far past the Hallmark Channel to more roles (and parts!) unknown.

“A Tourist’s Guide to Love” is now streaming on Netflix.

‘A Tourist’s Guide to Love’ Review: Rachael Leigh Cook Gets a Heart-Stamped Passport in a Conventional but Charming Rom-Com

Director Steven K. Tsuchida and screenwriter Eirene Tran Donohue take care to incorporate the sights and sounds of Vietnam into the narrative, and the film is most buoyant when capturing the country’s beauty. Interstitial montages are crafted with prospective explorers in mind, featuring scenery saturated with color and warm light. From Amanda’s compact car surrounded by scooters (a baptism by traffic) in Ho Chi Minh City to more intimate locations like Sinh’s family village in Thon Chang, elegantly constructed sequences show our heroine swept away, immersed lush landscapes and cultural traditions.

The film doesn’t allot much time to the supporting players on tour with Amanda, but they’re meaningfully used. A subplot in which Sam (Jacqueline Correa), her wife Dom (Nondumiso Tembe) and their teen daughter Robin (Morgan Dudley) rekindle their familial bond counters the heteronormativity of the central romance. While long-time marrieds/first-time honeymooners Brian (Glynn Sweet) and Maya (Alexa Povah) recede into the background, the arc of awkward college-bound vlogger Alex (Andrew Barth Feldman) makes a big impact in a short time. Perhaps it’s an idealized portrait, but it’s refreshing to see tourists not depicted as bumbling buffoons, disturbing landmarks or mocking rituals for comic purposes.

There’s a light feminist streak here, as both Amanda and Sinh save each other from despair at various points, while a callback that sees Amanda navigating chaotic city traffic as a pedestrian — thus showcasing her evolving confidence — is well-handled. However, the female characters’ relationships with each other are woeful. From Amanda’s nail technician to Sinh’s grandma, their primary topic of conversation usually revolves around a man. It also doesn’t help that Amanda spends very little time working on herself before jumping into another romance. Her goal should be independence, not codependence.

That said, Cook and Ly share sparkling repartee, best glimpsed in their walk-and-talks and seated chats. Their chemistry builds from well-earned, character-building moments, as they bonding over the Hoi An lanterns they float on the river, or detour to My Son Sanctuary. Cook makes Amanda an easy heroine to root for, suffused with strength, humor and vulnerability, while Ly radiates wit and tenderness, especially when digging into Sinh’s deeper layers. He also embraces the obligatory beefcake shot with verve, emerging from the ocean during their day at the beach in a gender-flipped play on Ursula Andress’ famous entrance in “Dr. No.”

A Tourist’s Guide to Love ending explained: Do Amanda and Sinh end up together?

By crystal george | apr 21, 2023.

’90s icon Rachael Leigh Cook stars in a new rom-com titled  A Tourist’s Guide to Love and it’s streaming now only on Netflix. The movie tells a heartwarming love story between a hardworking travel executive and an adventuresome Vietnamese tour guide. But do these two very different characters end up together at the end of the movie?

Based on an original idea of Cook’s,   A Tourist’s Guide to Love   was written by Eirene Donohue and directed by Steven Tsuchida. Cook portrays the role of Amanda Riley, an American travel executive who, after experiencing an unexpected breakup, decides to take on a job assignment in Vietnam to learn about the country’s tourism sector and to clear her head. But Amanda wasn’t expecting to fall wildly in love with her free-wheeling tour guide, Sinh Thach (Scott Ly). She also wasn’t expecting her ex-boyfriend to come back into the picture when things were finally looking up for her.

If you’ve arrived at this article, you’re most likely wondering how the film wraps up. Does Amanda end up with free-spirited tour guide Sinh or does she take back her ex-boyfriend of five years, John? No worries! We’ve got you covered by sharing who the protagonist ends up with at the end of  A Tourist’s Guide to Love  below.

Spoilers from  A Tourist’s Guide to Love  ahead.

Do Amanda and Sinh end up together in A Tourist’s Guide to Love?

Yes. Like many other rom-coms,  A Tourist’s Guide to Love  ends with the two main characters together. However, Amanda and Sinh had to overcome two obstacles before officially getting together.

As Sinh shows Amanda various beautiful locales in Vietnam, they begin to grow closer and develop feelings for one another. They make their feelings known to each other when they share their first kiss at Thon Chang. But their budding romance is halted when Amanda’s ex-boyfriend shows up wanting to get back with her. To make matters worse, it’s revealed that Amanda’s job, Tourista World Travel, has officially bought Saigon Silver Star. This was a complete shock to Sinh since he had no idea that his uncle was selling the family tour company and that Amanda was involved. Now, Amanda has to decide who she wants to be with and make things right with Sinh.

After talking with John, Amanda realizes that she no longer wants to be with him and they part ways for good. Later that night, she talks to her boss Mona and suggests they let Sinh run the tour company in Vietnam since he’s the best for the job. Mona agrees, and they end their call. Then, Amanda goes to look for Sinh to apologize and express her feelings.

When she finds the rest of the tour group, she notices Sinh is nowhere to be found. She learns from Anh that Sinh is on his way to visit his dad to clear his head. Anh then offers to take Amanda to see Sinh. Amanda finds Sinh standing outside the Hanoi Opera House, waiting for the bus. She quickly crosses the street and stands in front of Sinh. She apologizes to Sinh for lying and tells him that although Tourista has bought Saigon Silver Star, he’ll still be in charge. After laughing at an inside joke, they share a passionate kiss letting us know they have officially got together.

Now streaming on:

“A Tourist’s Guide to Love” is as harmless as its blandly forgettable title would suggest. It’s not quite a Movie to Fold Laundry To, because the scenery is quite lovely, so you’ll actually want to pay attention. But it is a pleasant escape if you’re seeking lazy Saturday afternoon viewing.

Rachael Leigh Cook brings her perky rom-com presence to this made-for-Netflix movie, which checks all the boxes you’d expect from such a slick and glossy example of the genre. Slapstick comedy, fish-out-of-water gags, wacky supporting characters, copious shopping montages, a love triangle, a secret to be revealed and a last-minute dash to say “I love you”—they’re all there, but this time they’re set against the backdrop of present-day Vietnam, which gives “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” an unusual feeling of novelty.

Director Steven K. Tsuchida , a TV veteran, was also behind 2021’s “ Resort to Love ,” another Netflix romantic comedy set in a picturesque vacation destination. This is pure formula, but the leads have such a sweet chemistry with each other, and the locations are so enticing, that you may as well just surrender.

Cook stars as Amanda Riley, an uptight, Los Angeles-based travel agent living a safe and predictable existence with her boring accountant boyfriend, John ( Ben Feldman ). Amanda’s boss (and apparently only friend), Mona ( Missi Pyle ), insists John is going to propose to her. Instead, he tells her he’s taking a job in Ohio and putting their relationship on hold. (Julia Shiplett makes the most of a brief supporting role as Amanda’s unimpressed manicurist.)

Stunned, Amanda agrees to Mona’s suggestion that she travel to Vietnam undercover to scope out a local tour company with the possibility of her firm buying it. This is also her chance to eat-pray-love her way out of heartache. Plus, she’ll be there for the annual Tet celebration, which just happens to be all about renewal. Would any of this actually happen in real life? No. Would a spoiled hotel heiress actually hit her head on a tree at a ski resort, suffer amnesia and fall for the hunky, widowed dad who owns a charming bed and breakfast? Probably not. We don’t watch these kinds of movies for realism.

And so Type-A Amanda becomes part of a tour group led by the handsome and soulful Sinh ( Scott Ly ) and his effervescent cousin, Anh (Quinn Truc Tran). Screenwriter Eirene Tran Donohue tries somewhat to flesh out the motley assemblage of fellow travelers, but she saddles them with awkward small talk, and no one is terribly interesting. The inordinately prepared Amanda insists on adhering to the itinerary because she wants to get the most out of her covert mission, but the easygoing Sinh takes a more spontaneous approach which—spoiler!—Amanda eventually learns to enjoy. Sinh also happens to have just the right profound thing to say for every occasion, which speaks to the flux in which Amanda finds herself. (Example: “A tourist wants to escape life. A traveler wants to experience it.”) Again, these are familiar types, but Cook’s likability softens her character’s pushy, impatient traits, and the charismatic Ly’s understated delivery makes Sinh’s platitudes less cheesy than they might sound.

Working with cinematographer Jon Keng and featuring plenty of shimmering aerial shots, Tsuchida makes every stop along the way seem vibrant and appealing, from the bustling streets of Ho Chi Minh City to the beaches of Da Nang to the verdant hills of Sinh’s home village. “Doing nothing feels very weird,” Amanda admits while lounging under an umbrella by the sea, and truer words were never spoken.

“A Tourist’s Guide to Love” is essentially a travelogue with a plot, but you might actually find yourself caring about whether these two attractive-but-extremely-different people end up falling for each other in the end.

On Netflix now.

Netflix’s A Tourist’s Guide to Love: Is the Movie Inspired by Real Life?

of Netflix’s A Tourist’s Guide to Love: Is the Movie Inspired by Real Life?

Directed by Steven K. Tsuchida, Netflix’s romantic comedy film ‘A Tourist’s Guide to Love’ revolves around Amanda Riley, who arrives in Vietnam undercover to evaluate a local tour company named Saigon Silver Star before her company Tourista attempts to buy the same. Amanda accepts the assignment to move on from her recent break-up with John. After arriving in Vietnam, she gets connected to her tour guide Sinh Thach, who develops feelings for her. The heartwarming film explores the changes Sinh brings to Amanda’s life realistically, making one wonder whether the couple’s endearing story is inspired by true events. Well, here’s what we can share about the same!

A Tourist’s Guide to Love is Based on Screenwriter’s Experiences

‘A Tourist’s Guide to Love’ is partially based on a true story. Although the tour company executive Amanda and tour guide Sinh Thach are fictional characters, their tale is partially based on the real experiences of the film’s screenwriter Eirene Donohue. Like Amanda, Eirene also had to deal with a breakup a few days before setting out to Vietnam for a trip. The screenwriter’s experiences while touring across the Asian country liberated her from the gloom of the separation from her partner the same way it happens to Amanda in the film. Like Eirene, Amanda discovered a new dimension of her own life in Vietnam.

a tourist's guide to love characters

“I was a wreck for the first week of our [Eirene and her sister’s] trip. But then — as we traveled through the country — I realized that it was the best thing that could have happened. And I learned that although it had been a good relationship and he [Eirene’s ex-boyfriend] was a nice guy, we never would have worked long-term. By the last week of my trip, I was happy to be single. No man for me. I was in love with life!” Eirene wrote about her experience, as per PopSugar . Similarly to the screenwriter, Amanda also makes peace with her break up after realizing that her ex-partner John wasn’t really a compatible match for her.

Amanda’s life gets turned around when she finds love in Vietnam, specifically in Sinh Thach. Eirene also found the love of her life during her Vietnam trip. “On my last week in Vietnam, I met a Canadian backpacker who was very much a free spirit and very adventurous,” the screenwriter told Netflix’s Tudum about meeting her partner during the journey. Like the encounter with Sinh makes Amanda realize that it is fine to step out of her comfort zone, the backpacker named Brad made Eirene realize the same. “It made me realize that I didn’t actually want a safe predictable life. He was supposed to be my holiday fling, [but] we have been together ever since — 22 years,” the screenwriter added.

‘A Tourist’s Guide to Love’ is not Eirene and Brad’s biopic. The screenwriter wasn’t in Vietnam to evaluate a local tour company for her company to buy the same. Nor was Brad a tour guide. But Amanda gaining a new perspective on life, which makes her embrace the unplanned and unexpected, is based on the screenwriter’s own experiences. Furthermore, Eirene’s screenplay focuses on the universality of break up so that the viewers can relate to the same. “I’ve experienced too many breakups in my own life. The idea of restarting your life is a topic that all too many of us are forced to reckon with, whether we like it or not,” Rachael Leigh Cook, who plays Amanda, explained to Tudum in the same interview.

Ultimately, the film is conceived as a lovely tribute to Vietnam, a country that holds a special place in Eirene’s heart. “There are almost no American movies set in Vietnam that aren’t about the trauma of war . It was really important to me to tell a story about life now. One that was full of joy and love and celebration. I wanted to change the conversation about Vietnam, to highlight it as a modern thriving country whose stories are worthy of being told,” the screenwriter added to Tudum.

Positive Messages

Sometimes you have to get off the beaten path and outside your comfort zone to experience new and incredible things. Lead with your heart. Tourists want to escape life; travelers want to experience it.

Positive Role Models

Sinh was raised between the US and Vietnam and enjoys sharing Vietnam with Americans as a tour guide. He's open-minded, kind, and playful. Amanda is more structured and likes to have things planned out. She misleads people about her real intentions in Vietnam.

Diverse Representations

The film is set mostly in Vietnam and shows the country both through the eyes of a tourist and a proud local. Vietnamese characters are portrayed as generous, fun, and family oriented. On the tour with Amanda is an older British couple, two Black women who are married and have a teenage daughter, and a nerdy teen boy.

A Tourist’s Guide to Love: Rachel Leigh Cook and Missi Pyle in the office.

What's the Story?

After getting dumped by her boyfriend John ( Ben Feldman ) on the night she's expecting a marriage proposal, Amanda Riley ( Rachel Leigh Cook ) jumps on an opportunity to travel for work and get away in A TOURIST'S GUIDE TO LOVE. Mona ( Missi Pyle ), her boss at a tourist company, sends her to Vietnam to scout out a local tour organizer they're considering buying. Handsome guide Sinh ( Scott Ly ) runs the operation, together with his cousin Anh (Thanh Truc), whose father owns the company. Sinh and Amanda start to have feelings for each other, but Sinh doesn't know the company is up for sale and Amanda hasn't revealed her professional involvement.

Is It Any Good?

The Vietnam setting is the freshest element in this formulaic romance which, following previous Netflix productions, sends an American woman to a faraway locale to gain perspective and fall in love. Cook seems a little detached from her character in A Tourist's Guide to Love , and her pairing with Ly lacks enough steamy chemistry to make their vital choices believable. Ly's performance is more relaxed, and he manages to casually smile through the many #lifelessons he imparts. Truc is adorable as his spunky cousin. The big issue might be the writing, which sets up several obvious scenarios and overly scripted dialogues on its way to completing the formula. Vietnam is on postcard-worthy show, though, so come for the romance but stay for the locations.

May not be entirely new in its perspective on romance, but that it arrives in a new packaging is enough of a selling point for it to get by. It also ends up being (just) enough for its actors—even though their characters' inner workings remain a mystery.

If you’ve never seen a tribute act perform the songs of artists that are either too big to play in Maine or who have passed away, there’s a way to do a whole bunch of that this week in Portland.

There are also tribute shows happening in venues around the state all summer long.

a tourist's guide to love characters

A Strange Day is the Portland-based tribute to The Cure. Photo by Seth D. Warner

Let’s start with Portland-based A Strange Day, a tribute to British alternative act The Cure, fronted by singer and guitarist Seth Warner.

The band will perform The Cure’s second album, “Seventeen Seconds,” in its entirety, along with some hits and other cuts at Portland House of Music on Thursday.

The album was released on April 18, 1980. Lead singer and guitarist Robert Smith turned 21 three days later. The single  “A Forest” marked the band’s debut on the U.K. Singles Chart, where it reached the No. 31 spot. The song remains a setlist staple at The Cure’s live performances.

Warner said he put himself in the shoes of Cure fans when deciding what album to cover. “What I would like to hear from a Cure band is a dive into the specific eras that surrounded each record, and ‘Seventeen Seconds’ set the tone for the more introspective and gloomy textures and themes.” Advertisement

As for Warner’s favorite “Seventeen Seconds” tracks, he said, “I really like ‘At Night’ for its dynamic potential, and the edgy and angsty ‘M.'”

The band took its name from the track “A Strange Day” from The Cure’s 1982 album “Pornography.”

Along with Warner, the band is Pete Dugas (keys), Andrew Hodgkins (drums), Matt Kennedy (synth/sax), Kevin O’Reilly (bass), Casey Urich (trumpet) and Corey Urich.

Angel Butts, a copy editor living in Westbrook, has seen The Cure more than 100 times on three continents and at least 10 countries, including Latvia and Colombia. “They’re like breathing to me. They have this massive catalog and it spans every possible mood, I don’t know of another band with a palette like that. “Seventeen Seconds” is among her favorite of the band’s 13 studio albums.

Butts has seen The Cure play the “Seventeen Seconds” album all the way through three times. “One of those shows stands as the best show I’ve ever seen in my life. The Cure: Reflections, Nov. 27, 2011 at the  Beacon Theatre in New York City.”

Butts said she and her 13-year-old daughter will be attending the A Strange Day show. “I think she’s more excited than I am.” Advertisement

A Strange Day  8:30 p.m. Thursday. Portland House of Music, 25 Temple St., Portland, $12 in advance, $15 day of show, 21-plus. portlandhouseofmusic.com

Another British act that will likely never perform in Maine is The Rolling Stones. With more than 30 albums, the band achieved legendary status decades ago. Singer Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards are both 80, and the band is currently on tour and will be at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts, on Thursday.

There are still tickets left for that show, but you can save yourself hours of traffic jams and a lot of more by instead heading to Aura on Saturday to see Satisfaction: The International Rolling Stones tribute show. Or maybe you’ll see the real deal and then keep the party going here in Maine.

Satisfaction has been slinging Stones hits for over two decades and has played more than 4,000 shows. Chris LeGrand’s take on Mick Jagger is pretty convincing, and he and the band will surely be pleased to meet you.

David Bowie and Prince died within five months of each other in 2016, at the ages of 69 and 57, respectively, and their losses were felt by millions of fans around the world. Advertisement

With contributions that are impossible to quantify, both artists left behind a legacy of music that lives on through radio play, home listening and tribute shows.

Boston-based musician Eric Gould loves both artists and is the bandleader of a Prince/Bowie tribute coming to Portland on Saturday. The band is a revolving lineup of players from all over the country.

Gould plays bass and designs the setlists. For this show, the musicians are Cal Kehoe (guitar, vocals), Adrian Tramontano (drums), Sammi Garrett (percussion, vocals), Josh Schwartz (baritone sax, vocals), Rob Somerville (tenor saxophone), Rob Volo (trombone) and Kiran Edwards (keys).

Gould said that, to him, Prince embodies soul, creative arrangement and precision. “His music has the best energy and makes you feel on top of the universe.”

He described Bowie as having a voice and character that is completely unique.

“It is powerful and epic and decadent,” said Gould, who has made a career out of finding unique connections through the songbooks of artists. “It is such a treat to present music people know and love in a way that is fresh to the ears. This combination brings so much joy to everyone on and off stage.” Advertisement
