Keweenaw Peninsula Fall Color Tour

There is one place in all of Michigan where the colors are so vibrant and the views so majestic it will take your breath away. The Keweenaw Peninsula is that place in the heart of the Copper Country. Thousands of people each year feel the pull to this destination to behold the beauty of what awaits the traveler. How many shades of orange and reds can there possibly be in God’s country?

Fall Colors in Houghton and Hancock

The Keweenaw color tour is a loop around the Peninsula showcasing some of the best views in all of Michigan. Starting in Houghton the visitor can view the colors that sweep across the two cities. There is no bad view from either side of the valley. The Portage lift bridge anchors your eye as colors engulf Michigan Tech University and frame in Mount Ripley.

Falls Colors at Hungarian Falls

From here head a short distance to Hubbell to see the colors in a magnificent waterfall backdrop. The Hungarian Falls is a short hike with three falls.  The lower falls give a breathtaking view of the falls but also looks out to Torch Lake and the colors of the valley below.  The middle falls are a remarkable photo gallery of fall colors with the powerful drop of the falls which you can get up close to.  The upper falls are no less beautiful and a little bit more a hike through woods where the smell of fall is thick upon the air.

Falls Colors in Gay MI

The next destination is Gay, MI for a stop at the Gay Bar and Restaurant for lunch.  The drive will take you through some historic mining history just outside of Hubbell and between Lake Linden.  These eerie buildings and structures are great places to see how the fall colors can transport them into artwork.  Along the way let the glimmering waters of Torch Lake be a great canvas to showcase colors on the opposite side of the lake.

Fall Colors in Lac La Belle

After leaving Gay, MI you make first contact with Lake Superior while driving along the shorelines of the Keweenaw.  There are plenty of roadside parks and pull-offs to get amazing photos of colors alongside Lake Superior.  Entering into the picturesque town of Lac La Belle the colors up and down Mount Bohemia are breathtaking.  There are plenty of hiking opportunities to the top of the mountain for glorious views. However, a popular destination to stop in is Bear Bluff which is perhaps of the best spots in all of the Keweenaw to see the colors alongside Lake Superior.

Fall Colors in Copper Harbor

The next destination is Copper Harbor. The drive to Copper Harbor is worth all the tour.  Driving between the town of Delaware and Copper Harbor are the famously covered roads.  You will literally feel like you are driving in a “Color Tunnel”.  Your heart will fall in love with this drive and you will remember this stretch of miles forever.  Once in Copper Harbor, you may want to pursue the many stores and restaurants in the city, stop in at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge, or check out the harbor.  However, the must stop at this destination is the drive-up Brockway Mountain.  This is the epicenter of the entire trip.  There are 360-degree views of the Keweenaw, Lake Superior, and on a clear day Isle Royale.

Fall Colors in Eagle Harbor and Eagle River

The next two stops will bring you down the west side of the Peninsula.  The features of this side of the shoreline are much rougher and rugged as compared to the east side.  There are plenty of pull-offs and little places to fall in love with.  The towns of Eagle Harbor and Eagle River are all postcard-worthy with colors that embrace the vibrancy of the color season.

Experience Michigan’s beautiful fall colors on a 19th century steam boat in Lansing

Hop aboard this 19th century steam boat for a Michigan fall color tour.

Few states are more beautiful than Michigan in the fall.

With its cool, comfortable weather, stunningly colorful landscape and seasonal activities for all ages, there’s no shortage of fun to be had. And one of the best ways to experience fall in Michigan is on the water.

The Michigan Princess , a classic replica of a 19th century steam boat, offers a unique and exciting way to experience Lansing and the state capital’s vivid fall foliage that lines the banks of the Grand River. Traversing the historic river, guests can embark on a one-of-a-kind sightseeing tour that includes live entertainment, beverages and fine dining onboard. There are two sister ships owned and operated by the Michigan Princess parent company as well, the Detroit Princess, docked near Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit, and the Grand Princess, housed in Grand Ledge but transportable for events.

Three boats, three personalities

The three steam boats have distinct, unique personalities, a different experience aboard each. From the Michigan Princess, which can charter up to 500 passengers, to a single-deck cruiser fit for smaller parties, the Princess family has a variety of sightseeing options, but all three steam boats have one key trait in common: their timeless, elegant feel.

Cruising Michigan waters, guests are transported to a bygone era of Victorian-style décor and design, reliving the history and fashion that shaped the industrial boom of the 19th century. This simple, entertaining experience, especially when had in the fall surrounded by the changing colors Michigan is known for, offers a timeless slice of the past surrounded by a picture-perfect, seasonal landscape that Michiganders both then and now have enjoyed for decades.

For more than 40 years, the J & K Steamboat Company, owned and operated by the Chamberlain family, has been a mainstay and a cultural staple of the greater Lansing and Detroit areas. In 1976, John Chamberlain, father of current boat captain Chris Chamberlain, began his business by renting out canoes. With an abundance of waterways in Michigan, being in or around the water is natural for locals and visitors alike. As the company grew, the Chamberlains purchased an old barge that they redesigned into their first boat, the Spirit of Lansing, which operated out of Potter Park. With the demand for boat rides rising, they launched a second boat, the Princess Laura, capable of holding 110 passengers.

Requests came in to transport the Princess Laura to different events and festivals. John Chamberlain knew he needed a vessel that could better handle large-scale events, and Michigan weather, so in 1991 the Michigan Princess – now the crown jewel of the Princess family – was christened by then-Michigan governor John Engler. Remodeled in 1998 to expand its size, the Michigan Princess can hold up to 500 passengers and is open for everything from guided tours, to corporate parties, to private functions. In the fall, especially, the Michigan Princess features a myriad of seasonal events.

Fall festivities aboard the Michigan Princess

Guests can embark on a Fall Brew Cruise, complete with more than 40 fall and seasonal beers and ciders. The event, which has two ticket options for a Brew Cruise only or a Brew Cruise plus dinner, includes light appetizers, a dinner menu and an acoustic rock show. There is also a daytime lunch cruise when photographing Michigan’s fall colors and foliage is the perfect opportunity.

Another popular fall event is the Halloween Blues Cruise Dinner, where guests are encouraged to dress in costume (and can win prizes for being best-dressed). It features live blues entertainment and a barbecue dinner featuring barbecue ribs, cornbread casserole and a chef’s choice of dessert.

Other events aboard the Michigan Princess include murder mystery dinners, ‘80s or oldies music cruises and salsa dancing getaways. From relaxing to a fun night out, there are events tailored for all interests and age groups, including families and children. Each tour offers both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, along with an array of food, menu and snack options. In the fall especially, the Princess boats are well-known for their Thanksgiving-style turkey buffets.

The Princess boats can be rented for private events as well, accommodating everything from weddings, to fundraisers, to corporate outings that can be enjoyed dockside or on the water. Each boat operates in rain or shine and is equipped with both heating and air conditioning. There is also parking nearby all three vessels for guests’ convenience and ease.

Landmarks to see

The Michigan Princess cruises a scenic stretch of the Grand River that passes these local landmarks during its six-mile roundtrip:

  • Grand River Park
  • The old Waverly Amusement Park, now Waverly Hills
  • Francis Park’s rose gardens
  • Michigan Governor’s Mansion
  • The Lansing Country Club
  • Moores River Drive
  • Riverside Park

Travel info, the u.s.a.’s best fall colors are here.

Marvel at our seven million acres of autumn brilliance.

See the Upper Peninsula’s stunning fall colors

Ask fall color seekers about their favorite destinations in the United States and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is on their lists. (Our fall foliage repeatedly makes USA Today’s 10Best.) Seven million acres of tree coverage, the pristine shores of three Great Lakes, picturesque historic lighthouses, mirror-calm inland lakes, tree-lined rivers and streams and roaring waterfalls make the U.P. a fall getaway no other U.S. destination can match.

When to see the best fall color

The leaf show begins when our daylight hours get shorter and the night air grows crisp in mid-September. First, there’s a splatter painting of scarlet reds and sunny yellows amid acres of green. Then, almost overnight, the hardwood forests explode in reds, oranges, yellows, purples, browns and greens. The colors intensify and peak by mid-October. But this breathtaking show continues for a couple more weeks, especially along tree-canopied roads near the shorelines of Lakes Huron, Michigan and Superior.

Check our weekly color reports

To help plan your trip, check our weekly color reports here for our eastern, central and western regions.

Drive these top 10 fall color tours

Below are 10 of our favorite fall color routes across the U.P. (nearly 1,500 gorgeous, leafy miles). Hop in your vehicle, and prepare to stop repeatedly to take photos. The views get more spectacular with every turn.

Tour 1: Keweenaw Peninsula

Western U.P. | 100 Miles | Fill a full day with stops

The Keweenaw Peninsula is an incredible destination all four seasons but it is positively WOW! during the fall. The foliage will take your breath away.

Start your tour in Houghton/Hancock. Home to Michigan Tech University, these two towns have a college vibe with a choice of eating and drinking establishments, outdoor recreation and lodgings. Crossing the Portage Lake lift bridge marks the beginning of your Copper Country adventure.

Follow US-41 north to historic Calumet, once the center of the booming copper mining industry. Take in the Victorian-era architecture, and stop by the Calumet Theater , a National Historic Landmark. While downtown, go to the Keweenaw National Historical Park visitor center to learn the location of over 20 heritage sites that tell the stories of the men and women who came to mine copper in this northernmost Michigan peninsula.

Continue north on US-41, taking time to stop at Eagle River Falls and Eagle Harbor Light Station and Museum Complex . The next stretch east on M-26 to Copper Harbor is one of the most scenic in Michigan. Winding up Brockway Mountain Drive brings you to some of the most photographed fall vistas in the U.P. If you can spend the night, this area offers some of the best stargazing, including the Keweenaw Dark Sky Park .

From there, make your way south on US-41, stopping for a Delaware Copper Mine Tour . Then, enjoy lots of fall colors as you wind your way to the pristine beach at Bete Grise you will arrive in 11 minutes). Take Lac La Belle Road east then make a slight right on Bete De Gris Road. After time at the beach, make your way south along the Keweenaw Bay coast following Bete De Grise Road. Take a sharp left and follow Gay-Lac La Belle Road to Gay. From there, follow Traprock Valley Road west, turn right onto Bootjack Road, then left on Calumet St. Hop on M-26 at Lake Linden and enjoy the scenery as you return to Hancock/Houghton for a restful overnight stay.

Tour 2: Porcupine Mountains

Western U.P. | 225 miles | 4.5 hours minimum

Houghton is your launch point for this popular fall tour. Head southeast on US-41 to Baraga County . If you treasure fall color, a side trip east of Baraga will take you to Point Abbaye. Follow US-41 east to L’Anse then north on Skanee Road to Townline Road. Locals will tell you that this drive up the Abbaye Peninsula rivals any “leaf peeping” drive in the nation.

Return to Baraga and make your way west on M-38 to Ontonagon County . It is home to Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park — the Midwest’s “last great wilderness.” It’s 60,000 acres of gorgeous vistas of Lake Superior’s stunning shores, roaring waterfalls, miles of rivers and streams, 35,000 acres of untamed old-growth forests and 90 miles of hiking/backpacking trails. If you can’t stay for more than a day, visit at least one of these three lookouts — Lake of the Clouds, Copper Peak and Summit Peak.

From the Porcupine Mountains, go south along CR-519. See Manabezho , Manido and Nawadaha Falls on the far west of the Porcupine Mountains near Wakefield Township. Go east from Wakefield on M-28 to Bergland on the northern tip of Lake Gogebic , the largest natural inland lake in the Upper Peninsula. If you can arrive at Bruce Crossings at nightfall, you can decide if the ghostly Paulding Mystery Ligh t is real or legend. If you prefer to complete this tour in daylight, take M-45 to see Rockland’s Victoria Hydroelectric Dam , the Old Victoria Restoration or  Minesota Mine . From there, go north on M-26, jogging west on M-38 to Greenland to visit Adventure Mining Company , where you can take an easy walking tour, rappel down a shaft or sign up for a drilling and blasting workshop. Return to M-26, enjoying the foliage in the Baraga State Forest and arriving in time for dinner and resting for tomorrow’s adventures in Houghton.

Tour 3: Iron Country

Western U.P. | 221 Miles | 4 hours minimum

Start at Ironwood, at the far west of the Upper Peninsula. If the weather is coolish, stop by the Stormy Kromer factory for a free tour and pick up a cap and other Stormy, stay-warm U.P. gear. Then head east on US-2 to Bessemer. If you have time, extend your tour by going north on the National Black River Scenic Byway Waterfall Tour . This will be a highlight of your Western U.P. travels. Along the approximately 14-mile Black River Road, you can see five impressive waterfalls: the Great Conglomerate Falls , Gorge Falls , the barrier-free Potawatomi Falls , Sandstone Falls ’ rock formations and Rainbow Falls . This byway will also take you to Copper Peak for an incredible, 360-degree leaf-viewing experience.

If a waterfall trip doesn’t work into your schedule, continue east on US-2 to Watersmeet. Four miles west of Watersmeet, explore the Ottawa National Forest’s Sylvania Wilderness on CR-535. The old-growth forests and 34 named, pristine lakes are home to a wide variety of animal and plant life. Return to US-2, and go east to Watersmeet jogging north on M-45 to see Bond Falls then backtracking to Watersmeet.

When you reach US-2, continue east to Iron River. Hikers and ORVers both claim the best way to see fall color is on Iron County ’s hundreds of miles of trails. Nearby Caspian is home to the Iron County Historical Museum . This is the U.P.’s largest local museum with over 100 iron mining and logging exhibits, 26 buildings, two art galleries and a gift shop. Return to US-2, taking it to Crystal Falls where you will head north on US-141 to Covington, then west on M-28 to Bruce Crossings, then Bergland at the northern tip of scenic Lake Gogebic . Take M-28 southwest to Wakefield then follow US-2 west. You will be back in Ironwood in less than a half hour.

Tour 4: Marquette

Central U.P. | 177 miles | 3.5 hours minimum

A good basecamp for this tour is Marquette with its vibrant downtown, dining, entertainment and recreational choices and a variety of lodgings. Start your adventure following Deutsch St. northwest for a half hour along the Lake Superior coastline to Big Bay. Nearby, the 9 miles of Big Bay Pathway trails and Big Pup Creek Falls give you close-up views of autumn’s magnificence.

Return to the junction of US-41 and go southwest to Negaunee and Ishpeming, where you can catch lunch or a craft beer. Mountain bikers can see fall colors from an exciting singletrack RAMBA trail between the two cities. For a less strenuous leaf-viewing experience, visit Black River Falls when you’re in Ishpeming.

From Ishpeming, go east on BUS M-28, taking several small jogs until you reach County Road 480 then south on M-533 to Gwinn. From there, go east on M-94 through Chatham and within minutes, you will enter the Hiawatha National Forest for your fall color feast. Turn right to follow M-28E/M-94E to Shingleton. Once in Shingleton, turn around and take M-28W/M-94W. Take M-28W into Munising, your gateway to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

Some of Munising’s fall color highlights include Pictured Rocks Boat Cruises until mid-October, Miner’s Castle and seeing the 16 waterfalls in Alger County . For an unforgettable wilderness adventure, take the ferry to Grand Island (it runs until Oct. 10) and go hiking, mountain biking and kayaking surrounded by jaw-dropping beauty.

On your return trip from Munising to Marquette, prepare to see some of the most stunning Lake Superior scenery going west along the coast on M-28.

Tour 5: Wild River & Lake Michigan Bays

Central U.P. | 127 miles | 2.5 hours minimum

Start this fall adventure in Iron Mountain by making your way to Pine Mountain Ski Jump , where you can take in some of the best fall vistas in the U.P. At the base of the ski jump is the free Upper Peninsula Veterans Memorial . If you have the stamina, walk up the 500 Pine Mountain Steps . This half-mile vertical climb is the largest outdoor staircase in the U.S. It brings you to the ski jump — the largest artificially made ski slide in our country, too.

From Iron Mountain, take US-2 east to Norway, then go south on M-8 to Piers Gorge Road and park. There is a 1.5-mile trail that offers spectacular views of the Menominee River , its churning rapids, ledges and waterfalls.

Return to US-2 and go east to Hermansville where you can get out of your vehicle and immerse in the colorful woods. The Hermansville to Escanaba multi-purpose rail trail traverses 25 miles. Choose how far you want to go hiking, mountain biking, horseback or ATV riding. Highlights along the trail are three bridges with photo-worthy overlooks.

Go back to US-2 and take it east to Spalding. Turn south on US-41 and go to Menominee, a historic town on Lake Michigan’s Green Bay at the Michigan/Wisconsin border. Catch lunch, then go north on M-35 along Lake Michigan to Escanaba. On the way, you will pass through Escanaba River State Forest where you can enjoy plenty of leaf viewing. Once in Escanaba, stay a day or two and enjoy these local fall color tours .

Tour 6: Lake Michigan

Central & Eastern U.P. | 144 miles | 2.5 hours minimum

Some fantastic pull-offs along this Lake Michigan coastal tour will bring you back again and again. In Escanaba, pick up some Swedish Pantry Bakery cardamon bread and to-go coffee or tea, a bag of Sayklly’s chocolates or Dobber’s pasties for the road. Then take US-41 north to Rapid River on US-2. Visit Rapid River Knifework s, and learn about the craftsmanship of their sports and kitchen knives.

Continue east on US-2. At Garden Corners, take M-183S to Fayette to explore an iron-smelting boom town turned ghost town, Fayette Historic State Park & Townsite . You can easily spend a half-day here walking the 3.5 miles of scenic trails through hardwood forests, along the bluff and the townsite. Kayakers will enjoy Snail Shell Harbor and its scenic limestone bluffs.

Another don’t-miss side trip is visiting the “Big Spring,” Kitch-iti-kipi in Palms Book State Park north of Manistique. Nicknamed the “Mirror of Heaven'' by the Ojibwe, Michigan’s largest natural spring reflects its surroundings on crystal-clear waters. It takes approximately 16 minutes to go west on County Highway 442, north on County Road 455 and then north on M-149.

Return to US-2, and continue east to Epoufette and the Cut River Bridge/Roadside Park . The scarlet red, amber and brilliant orange leaves are only rivaled by the Lake Michigan waterfront.

Just when you think you can’t be awed anymore, US-2 will take you to St. Ignace, the second-oldest, continuously inhabited city in Michigan. Steeped in Native American and European history, this is a good stopover destination. But what will amaze you is the Mackinac Bridge that spans 5 miles over the Straits of Mackinac connecting the Upper and Lower Peninsulas. You must stay to see the sunset and the bridge gleaming with lights at night.

Tour 7: Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore/Seney National Wildlife Refuge

Central U.P. | 160 miles | 3 hours minimum

Fall Color Tour 4 gives you a taste of how spectacular the scenery is along Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore , but take this tour for the full-blown experience. Motorcyclists rank County Road H-58, from Munising to Grand Marais, one of the top rides in the country. In the fall, it is off-the-charts beautiful whatever vehicle you are driving.

From Munising, take County Road H-58 to E. Munising Ave. Continue on Adams Trail to County Road H-58E/Au Sable Trail. Go north to Sullivan’s Landing on the shores of Lake Superior. For the next few miles, take time to visit the picturesque Au Sable Light Station , the Log Slide Overlook and the Grand Sable Lake Scenic Overlook .

Once you arrive at the quaint village of Grand Marais, enjoy the shops, hunt for agates on the beaches and walk the Sunset Boardwalk. A unique attraction is the Pickle Barrel House Museum , a 16-foot-tall barrel that was once a summer home for a well-known illustrator, William Donahey, creator of the famous Teenie Weenie characters. In the fall, it is open on weekends in September or by appointment.

From Grand Marais, go south on M-77 to Seney. If you are up to more wilderness sightseeing, continue south on M-77 to Germfask’s Seney National Wildlife Refuge . You will find many places to hike and paddle, but the Strangmoor Bog National Landmark is part of the Superior Birding Trail. This time of year, you are likely to see American Bitterns, Northern Saw-whet Owls and Blackburnian Warblers among many other migratory birds as you meander through.

Complete the tour by returning to Seney, taking M-28 west to M-94 and north to Munising. If you want to end your day stargazing or seeing the Northern Lights, the mile-long Miners Beach on Lake Superior, off County Road H-28 near Shingleton, is one of the top picks.

Tour 8: Tahquamenon Falls/Whitefish Point

Central and Eastern U.P. | 172 miles | 3.5 hours minimum

This is a tour where the scenery gets better with every turn. Plan to add extra time for frequent photography stops!

Start the adventure in Grand Marais and take M-77 south to Seney. If you haven’t seen the Seney National Wildlife Refuge , continue south to Germfask to hike, paddle and watch for wildlife . From Seney, take M-28 east, then north on County Road 405 to Newberry.

If you have the time, take the six-and-a-half-hour Tahquamenon Falls Train and River Boat Tour from nearby Soo Junction. The boat captain will talk to you about points of interest few people can see from their vehicles. You can also hike to a private viewing area to see the mighty Tahquamenon Upper Falls, one of the largest falls east of the Mississippi River.

From Newberry, continue the fall color tour, driving northeast on M-123 through Newberry State Forest and the Tahquamenon Falls State Forest to Paradise. There you can visit the Tahquamenon Falls State Park to see the Upper and Lower Falls. For another only-in-the-UP experience, stop by for a craft brew and a snack or meal at the Tahquamenon Falls Brewery and Pub at Camp 33 , the only brewery housed on Michigan state land.

From Paradise, continue north on Whitefish Point Road to Whitefish Point . This is one of the premier places to see hundreds of varieties of migrating birds following their ancient flight paths south in the fall. It’s also the site of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum with its emotionally powerful exhibits, light station, lightkeeper’s quarters and rock-strewn beach. Open until Oct. 31, you will leave with a deeper respect for Lake Superior and those who have sailed it.

Make your way back to Paradise, then south on M-123 to County Road 407 and north to Deer Park. Then take Deer Park Road west until it becomes County Road H-58. Pull over often to catch the Lake Superior views.

Tour 9: Whitefish Bay

Eastern U.P. | 81 miles | 1.5 hours minimum

This is one of our shortest fall color tours, but there are lots of staggeringly beautiful trees in the Hiawatha National Forest and along the Lake Superior shoreline to enjoy. Begin in Paradise and go south on M-123, then left on M-28 and left on M-221. Stop in Brimley or Bay Mills Point to take in the ever-changing landscape of Lake Superior. Brimley State Park has an observation platform to watch the passing freighters going and returning from the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie. You also can see Canada from there.

After a jaunt up to Bay Mills Point, turn right onto West Lakeshore, travel 19 miles along Whitefish Bay then another 9.4 miles on Lake Superior Shoreline Road to the M-123 junction, and drive north to Paradise.

Tour 10: Lake Huron to Sault Ste. Marie

Eastern U.P. |168 miles | 3.5 hours minimum

When people cross the Mackinac Bridge from Michigan’s Lower Peninsula to the Upper Peninsula, they feel a sense of freedom and carefree adventure. This tour brings out the explorer in you! Start in St. Ignace at the base of the 5-mile-long suspension bridge, and continue north on I-75 to historic Sault Ste. Marie , the oldest city in Michigan and one of the oldest in the United States. Be sure to visit the Soo Locks , the ultimate international and Great Lakes freighter-watching destination. This is also a good place to catch a meal or ice cream snack, visit shops and historic museums, and get outside and play on recreational trails.

Continue the tour, leaving Sault Ste. Marie by going south on M-129, then left on M-48E to DeTour Village on the St. Marys River. While in the village, stop by the DeTour Passage Historical Museum and Maritime Park . Learn about the area’s rich maritime history, and get front-row-seat views of giant freighters.

If you can extend your visit, catch a ferry across to Drummond Island , the second-largest island in the Great Lakes. This island is an adventure waiting for you to join in on the fun. It is renowned for its ORV trails, kayaking, hiking, golfing and peaceful relaxation amid the changing trees.

As you continue your fall color tour, take M-134 west from DeTour Village to I-75 along the northern shores of Lake Superior. Stop frequently at the beaches, and catch a meal in Cedarville or Hessel. Paddling around the Les Cheneaux Islands , an archipelago of 36 small islands, is a fall treat — especially at sunset. Both Hessel and Cedarville are replete with shops and art galleries featuring a variety of locally made crafts and gifts!

When you reach I-75, go south to St. Ignace. Stay over. There are lots of things to do in this historic town tomorrow.

Where to stay to take in the U.P.’s brilliant forests

Throughout the U.P., you can find lodgings, resorts and campgrounds with the rates and amenities that fit your fall color tour plans. September to mid-October are popular times to visit, so to get the dates you want, book your stay ahead. We can’t wait to share this beautiful peninsula with you soon!

Treetop views of the marina and city

Spring Street Bluff Boardwalk -We suggest parking near the end of Spring Street and entering the boardwalk at this point to see the stunning viewing platform at the top. Perfect for seeing Michigan fall colors! (see map above)

When will the fall colors change? Michigan Fall Color Predictions

4. Let's Tour the Famous M-119 Tunnel of Trees to See Peak Fall Color!

Color changing trees and a curving roadway

Harbor Springs is the starting point for the Tunnel of Trees.  As you continue through Harbor Springs, just stay on M-119 west as it heads toward Good Hart Michigan.

Did you that Northern Michigan’s Tunnel of Trees along M-119 is ranked among the most scenic roads in America?

The Tunnel of Trees is spectacular in autumn when the hardwoods along the road are aflame in the bright fall colors of reds, yellows and oranges.  Definitely a photographers dream.

Also, did you know the Tunnel of Trees in Harbor Springs is especially breathtaking in spring when delicate trilliums carpet the forest floor that borders the road?

Grab our indepth  Northern Michigan’s Tunnel of Trees along M-119  guide for things to do and see along the way!

5. Hike Thorne Swift Nature Preserve!

Boardwalks and water views

Thorne Swift Nature Preserve - 6696 Lower Shore Dr, Harbor Springs . Meander along a wood chip path and board walk that leads you through a densely wooded Balsam and Cedar Trail.  You will be rewarded with 300 feet of sandy (and public!) Lake Michigan shoreline with gorgeous views and striking fall color!  Explore the dunes, swamplands, and ponds in addition to the stretch of beach and lake.

There are about three miles of trails to hike. Explore the boardwalks and be sure to stop at the observation platforms during your visit.  The views are outstanding!

Trail Hours April 15-November 15 –  Daily 10 am to sunset

Trail Map- Here is a trail map for your trip planning!

Definitely add Thorne Swift Nature Preserve to your Epic Michigan Fall Tour this season!

Pond surrounded by woods

Nature Center Hours:  Memorial Day through to Labor Day – 10 am-7 pm

Directions:  From Harbor Springs, take M-119 northwest 3.8 miles to Lower Shore Drive. Follow Lower Shore Drive for ½ mile. The preserve sign is on the left.

6. Enjoy Hot Chocolate, Cute Critters and Pumpkin Picking at Pond Hill Farms

Hundreds of pumpkins for sale

Pond Hill Farm and Harbor Springs Vineyard and Winery (within Pond Hill Farm)- 5581 S. Lake Shore Dr.

This lovely farm is located five miles north of Harbor Springs and definitely worthy of our Epic Michigan Fall Tour.

Great selection of jams, jelly and food in the store

Pond Hill Farm is family-owned and offers a cute market with its own fresh produce as well as homemade preserves like hot garlic pepper jelly.  YUMMY!

  • Pond Hill’s Garden Cafe makes a wonderful lunch stop from late May through October. I promised we would eat, didn't I?

People enjoying meals inside the wood-lined restaurant

Visit Pond Hill Farm's winery for wine tasting! Oh, and be sure to see their cute animals!

  • Be sure to stop by during their Fall Fest Weekends mid September through Mid October!  (Check their website for details!)

Whether you're chucking pumpkins, enjoying Pond Hill Farm's beer and wine, or shopping in the farm store, you will have a great time!

7. Stop to Shop in Good Hart!

Red Awnings of the General Store

Midway between Harbor Springs and Cross Village are lots of fun shops in the quaint village of Good Hart Michigan. It's a perfect place to stop and stretch your legs on our Michigan fall road trip.

Check out the  Good Hart General Store -1075 North Lakeshore Drive, Good Hart, Michigan 49737.  They have snacks and food to take on the road along with cute home decor and gift items.

This is a must stop spot for lots of reasons ( other than we all gotta pee! ): The adorableness factor (bright red paint, striped awnings, white trim add up to a perfect photo backdrop), a chance to get out an stretch, and get fun scenic highway souvenirs along our Epic Michigan Fall Tour.

  • There are bathrooms located on the left rear side of the General Store.

8. Enjoy Dinner in Cross Village At Legs Inn!

Having fun on your Michigan fall road trip?   Our next stop is Cross Village!

This small village features a giant white cross on a bluff overlooking the lake. The story of the cross has its roots back in the seventeenth century, when Jesuit missionary Jacques Marquette supposedly planted a white cross on the bluff before he died.

Cross Village might just possibly the oldest settlement of continuous occupany in the state of Michigan! Through the primitive period it was a center of Indian trade, and was a source  for the corn needed to feed the voyageurs.

Very odd curving wood design inside the restaurant

Legs Inn:  6425 N Lake Shore Dr, Harbor Springs, MI 49740.  (Reservations not accepted) CLOSED TUESDAYS in 2023.

Lovers of Polish food and/or lumberjack-worthy décor need to head to Legs Inn for dinner. This incredible stone and timber establishment shuts down for the season on October 22, 2023.

Chris ordered the Bigos (Hunter's Stew) which was a delicious, slow-cooked Hunter's Stew with cuts of beef, pork and Polish sausage. I got the Old World Sampler so I could try all the things. Stay for sunset on the lakeside lawn. You will love it! The food was served very quickly, hot and it was very tasty. The wait staff keeps everything moving quickly and are very friendly.

The interior of the building and grounds are unique, to say the least. Inside, artistic creations are everywhere, made from branches, roots or other natural objects. The tables are made from trees, probably acquired from the local surroundings. The gardens outside are well maintained and beautiful. The view of Lake Michigan is also gorgeous.

Legs Inn has been family owned for years. It was founded by a Polish immigrant and the food is authentic Polish cuisine.

9. Final Stop: Headlands International Dark Sky Park

Starry sky at night

Address: 15675 Headlands Rd, Mackinaw City, MI 49701

And so, the grand finale to our Epic Michigan Fall Color Tour is a viewing of the Milky Way! Get ready to view an unbelievable vast array of stars without light pollution!

Grab our Top 4 Dark Sky Parks in Michigan Guide!

After a long, glorious day of epic sightseeing, visit the Headlands International Dark Sky Park in Mackinaw City !  It's free to park and enter, just bring your own chairs and a blanket.  There is an arched concrete seating area near the water too.

If you have a red light flashlight, bring it but you don't really need it as the paths are lit.

There are bathrooms at Headlands International Dark Sky Park.

Chris and I have been to the Headlands International Dark Sky Park at least 6 times. Every time we go to Mackinac Island we make sure to have one evening free to see the stars.

On a dark night you can see the Milky Way and fast moving satellites which are just breathtaking.

The Best Fall Foliage Drives and Train Rides in Michigan

Laura Sternberg / Getty Images

Even though the Northeast of the U.S. is where most people think of for autumn colors, Midwesterners can see the most striking reds, oranges, and yellows right in their own backyard. The vast forests of Michigan experience some of the best fall colors in the country—and without the crowds who flock to New England. The most worthwhile viewing spots are in the expansive and rugged northern part of the state, especially in the Upper Peninsula. But even visitors to Detroit can revel in the season by seeing the trees in local parks or on nearby day trips.

Self-Guided Driving Tours

The most popular option for touring Michigan's fall foliage is simply driving yourself along a route, allowing for the most flexibility in terms of the length of your drive and which stops you want to take.

  • Michigan's Gold Coast: This fan-favorite route starts in Traverse City , then meanders 100 miles through Northport, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, and finally Inspiration Point, following the coast along the M-22 highway.
  • Lake Superior Circle Tour : This 1,300-mile route includes not only Michigan's Upper Peninsula but also Wisconsin; Minnesota; and Ontario, Canada. The goal is to make a complete circle around Lake Superior. While it's possible to do this all in one go, many people do it in different segments over the years. The Michigan portion of the route is particularly spectacular—drive along Route 28 from Sault Ste. Marie through Marquette, then continue the tour up to the Keweenaw Peninsula for bright autumn colors.
  • Tunnel of Trees: For those short on time, this 20-mile drive down M-119 in Emmet County—the northernmost county in the mitten-shaped Lower Peninsula—is perfect for a relaxing afternoon. The old trees have formed a sort of tunnel over the road, providing a beautiful sight throughout the entire 20 miles. You can stop at local farms, restaurants, and even some sand dunes along the way for more fun.

Train Tours

Driving is, of course, a good way to see Michigan's fall colors, but taking a train gives you time for observation and is an experience in and of itself. Plus, it's great for people who don't have a car.

  • Michigan Steam Train : This operator schedules train trips to catch peak color change. Routes vary throughout the season and can cover Kalkaska, Petoskey, Boyne, Cadillac, Clair, Lake George, Mt. Pleasant, Owosso, and Yuma.
  • Southern Michigan Railroad : Each October, this train line operates special fall foliage tours out of Tecumseh. Make sure you book in advance, as they often sell out by August.
  • Coopersville and Marne Railway: For a family-friendly train ride, take this railway's Famous Pumpkin Train, which operates from the end of September through October. Characters like the Grand Pumpkin and the Scarecrow tell stories to the kids, who then get to pick out their very own pumpkin from a patch.

Fall Colors Near Detroit

Getting out of the city and into the rich natural parks that make up the Great Lake State is the most thrilling way to experience the changing trees, but that isn't always possible. Even if you're limited to staying around Detroit, you still have options. A handful of park options are within and near the city , but the best local one is Belle Isle Park, which sits on the Detroit River. In the nearby suburb of Brighton, the Brighton Recreation Area is nearly 5,000 acres of woodlands that turn the colors of fall beginning in October.

If you can afford to take a day or weekend trip but can't get all the way to northern Michigan, try visiting a nearby town outside of the metropolitan area of Detroit. South Haven on the shores of Lake Michigan is especially celebrated for its fall festivals, or head up to Stony Creek Metropark for something even closer.

When Fall Foliage Peaks in Michigan

Generally speaking, peak fall foliage in Michigan can range from mid-September through the end of October. As with other locations, the peak time for the most vibrant colors starts further north and works its way south. The forests of the Upper Peninsula usually start to change color at the end of September, while the southern part of the state, including Detroit, may not reach peak colors until the middle or end of October.

Several resources make predictions, much like a daily weather or allergy forecast, about when leaves will change color in Michigan. They also keep track of the color-changing progress at various locations throughout the state.

  • The Weather Channel  posts a map of current fall-foliage conditions in the region.
  • Pure Michigan (Michigan's official travel and tourism site) posts a map with a prediction of color-change peaks across the state, and you can even sign up for email updates to stay on top of the game as the season changes.
  • The Foliage Network provides reports for the Midwest that keep track of color and leaf drop, including regular updates of the current season as well as historical reports of years past.

It’s very possible that the colored leaves in the Porcupine Mountains (Porkies) will be covered in snow. It’s actually quite beautiful the contrast the bright white snow has with the fall colors . I recommend visiting the Porkies in early October. You’ll have better chances to avoid the snow on your fall color road trip.

I love fall foliage the colors of nature always inspire me to remember how lucky we are to experience this each year. Your photos are beautiful.

I love that you give exact locations and drives to see the best color. I hope to get to Michigan to see the color someday.

I am so tempted to get there now for the fall colors. Pure magic! I am very often convinced that Autumn is more beautiful than Spring 🙂 Thanks for all the info.

It’s funny you say that, because I always go back and forth on my favorite depending on which season I’m currently in haha

I swear Chelsea if Darcee sees this post and makes me Drive all the way up from New Orleans to the “UP” so she can go cruising amid the Tunnel of Trees on M-119, I am going to be pissed cause gas is really expensive right now. HAHA. But seriously, she LOVES the Fall changing of the leaves so for me the whole Fall colors in Tahquamenon Falls State Park experience seems right up my outdoorsman alley too.

Thanks for the very thorough guide to fall foliage drives in Michigan. Being an Australian, I’d love to do some of these drives! We just don’t get the beautiful autumn colours over here. The tunnel drive looks like it’d be right up there as a favourite for me.

We do love to head out for drives to see the fall colours. Michigan definitely looks like a great spot. Always hard to plan travel for the colours in advance. I love all the different scenes to frame these fall colours. So many places that we may need more than one visit.

We first explore the UP in summer 2020. What a beautiful area! I can imagine how gorgeous it would look with changing colors!

Oh those colours are magical. Michigan looks like the perfect place for a fall road trip. Dreamy!

Michigan keeps calling my name! Love this curated list of the best drives to see fall colors. Beautiful!

It’s a hidden gem of a state! We don’t have the big cities tourists flock to but our nature activities make up for it 🙂

I’ve been wanting to take a roadtrip to see all of the fall colors so badly! This is perfect – wish the trees stayed this way for longer!

This guide is very useful. I like your road / route suggestions.

As a Minnesotan, I’ve heard a lot about these fall color destinations, especially in the UP, but have yet to make it. Your photos make it look absolutely spectacular. Hopefully I’ll make it to Pictured Rocks sooner than later!

The UP has some very underrated nature spots all over, but it’s a 6- 10 hour drive to get there from where we live in Detroit!

I just adore chasing the changing trees in autumn. I feel like I visited Michigan reading your great article.

Aww, thanks Terri! I hope one day you make it here 🍁

Enticing leaf peeping areas. Terrific blog, Chelsea.

So many great locations for fall foliage. I sure do miss the Northern US. I have visited Traverse City and Troy but only in the summertime. Hoping to get to that National Lakeshore one day.

Wow these all look sooo beautiful. I love the tunnel of trees, like something out of a movie! These bright colours are so captivating 🙂

The fall colours are truly amazing and I can’t wait to see them. Now I know exactly how to find the best spots too. Thank you!

Wowza! I love all your drone photos – the views look even better from above and those changing leaves are beeeeautiful!

I don’t think I could stop with a drive though. I’d need to get out and hike in all that prettiness.

If it were any other year I would grab this guide and head across the border. But I will save this for another year. We are having a great fall colour season in Canada. But I love the different options you have presented. We would want to visit the Pictured Rocks National Park when the water was calm to catch reflections of those beautiful colours. I do love this time of year!

Wow! I had no idea Michigan is so gorgeous in fall! I have only been to the lower part of Michigan – New Holland and Saugatuck – in summer, but I want to do a Great Lakes road trip next year and now I am definitely considering doing it in fall

The fall foliage in this state is beyond gorgeous. I would love to do a road trip in this area next year. I also would love to experience Canada in the Fall as well.

I used to think fall foliage sightseeing was only a New England thing… It’s good to see that it happens in other places too. The tunnel of trees looks amazing, and I love your drone shots!

Thank you! Michigan has INCREDIBLE fall colors each year. The leaves are starting to change now, so I’m going to get some more drone shots this year hopefully!

We got to Michigan for our first time this summer and I was was so impressed. Your pictures prove it, but I imagine it is so lovely in fall. I would love to get there at some point.

Michigan is underrated in my opinion! Most people don’t think “midwest” when they are planning their next trip haha hopefully there are more visitors now that international travel is not as heavy.

This indeed looks like the state to enjoy the fall foliage. It’s similar to Ontario with its showcase of trees and lakes. I’m sure you had the best time camping and driving those roads.

It was a very special trip, and tons of fun 🤗 I’d love to visit Bruce Peninsula National Park. I’m in Detroit just 15 away from the ambassador bridge, so it’s been on my bucket list for awhile.

These photos are gorgeous! I’m so jealous, our leaves don’t change colors here in Florida. We’re planning a fall foliage trip soon.

Sometimes I wonder if I am willing to sacrifice the fall colors for a warm winter lol

I could just drive around there all day looking at those colors. So beautiful. We get some fall colors here in Vancouver where I live by nothing like this. Fall is my favorite!

The entire state lights up with bright colors 😍 we have a lot of national forests plus open space the further north you go. Every year i’m reminded how beautiful they are.

So Cool! Thanks for sharing!

I am so hoping to take a fall trip to see the changing leaves. I hadn’t thought of Michigan, but I see the state has beautiful autumn colors. Wow!

Incredible pictures! I’ve always wanted to experience fall in Boston but sounds like Michigan is a great option too. Autumn is definitely my favourite season now, especially after being in Japan during fall!

How amazing! I’d love for a drone to capture the beautiful colours from above <3

Michigan is awesome, so is fall with the leaves foliage! Been to Michigan a few years ago but it was a bit too early and everything was still pretty green, so it seems I need to go back to catch Indian Summer in that area 😀

As an East-Coaster who has basically travel up and down the east side of the U.S., I’m ashamed to say I’ve never been to Michigan! These beautiful fall leaves are telling me I have been seriously missing out. When I finally fine my way back Stateside, Michigan is now on my travel list for the U.S!

These fall colors are incredible! Totally makes me want take a road trip.

So beautiful! People always underestimate the beauty of the Midwest just because they assume it is freezing always. In reality, there is no where more beautiful to see the seasons change! Great pictures!

This is absolutely gorgeous, I love seeing all the fall colors.

The colors are stunning! What beautiful scenery and what a wonderful time of year to go for a drive and enjoy nature and all it’s wonders. The tunnel of trees is so picturesque, love your photos!

These are so beautiful! We are actually going to drive around our area today and look at the fall colors.

I would love to experience fall as you have. Your photos are amazing. I felt as if I was there in real life just looking at them.

So beautiful! The scenery is breathtaking. Love it!

Ahh these are such beautiful photos! Putting autumn in Michigan on my bucketlist! 😊🍁🍂

YES! It makes me so happy when people are inspired to visit my home Great Lakes state. There are soooo many areas to see during all seasons.

These pictures are incredible!! I cannot believe this is what your fall looks like!!

Wow! Fall is beautiful! I would really love to experience this part of the world during this season. The photos are amazing

Those sky-view images are amazing, and the colours look so beautiful. It looks a bit like the UK in autumn, but just a llot bigger. This certainly looks like an epic road trip to do one day.

Wow! Never knew Michigan had such beautiful places for fall. So nice that you can easily experience this splendour with a drive. Thank you for sharing.

The colors here are stunning. I’m planning to visit Pictured Rocks next August. I’m just hoping for cool weather!

What a beautiful spot of a weeks of camping! I could be the set of a fairtale! We also live in part of the world with amazing autumn colours and it is my favourite time of the year.

Beautiful photos! What a fun experience. Thanks for sharing.

Oh this is so beautiful it is almost beyond imagination. Thank you for the great pictures and information.

It’s incredible to see the color change in the fall, Michigan has spectacular roads and places to see them.

My son and his family lived in Michigan for 4 years, and I missed the fall season every visit — so sad! Your photos are lovely. I wish I could back right now! I did enjoy these trees in the spring, though. Michigan offers a lot of beauty.

These are beautiful photos! We are traveling across Michigan at the beginning of November so hopefully the warmer weather this year will keep the colors later so that we can see them too!

Living in Los Angeles for two decades I really missed the changing of the seasons. We used to drive down to Sedona, AZ – just so we could see that array of oranges and burnt copper … fall is just such an amazing season isn’t it?

LA huh? How’d you like it? I traveled out to LA for work about 4x a year for awhile, its a busy city lol I agree, fall is magical. It’s my favorite season, and here in Michigan the colors are only out for a few weeks/month before they’re gone again. I try to take advantage of those few weeks to get as many fall shots in as I can, because they’re just SO beautiful.

Wow, these pictures are so beautiful. I just read a post on The Independent about the most beautiful places to see leaves in Autumn. I am so proud they mention the forest near my home town. Check it out 🙂

Oh the autumn colours are just to die for, oh so beautiful!

I do agree with you, a roadtrip through your local surroundings really makes you see and appreciate whats around you. We did that during the summer, we re-visited our local beaches and found them truly magical. They’ve always been magical, I just forgot to look 🙂

What incredible photos! I would never have considered Michigan for fall drives. Living outside the US, all i normally hear about is New England!

Growing up in the southwest, I’m used to experiencing the tourists who visit Colorado to see the leaves change. Although the state has some beautiful destinations, I think Michigan may have Colorado beat! These photos prove I need to make a visit to see fall leaves change.
