How Much Do LPGA Players Make? Exploring the Earnings of the World’s Top Women Golfers

women's pga tour earnings

  • March 24, 2023

The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) has been the premier stage for professional women golfers since its inception in 1950. Showcasing talent from around the world, the LPGA has experienced significant growth over the years. Along with increased media exposure, this growth has led to a rise in the earning potential for LPGA players. In this article, we will explore how much LPGA players make, examining factors such as tournament winnings, endorsements, and other income streams.

Tournament Winnings

The primary source of income for LPGA players is their performance in tournaments. As of 2021, the LPGA Tour consisted of more than 30 events, with total prize money exceeding $75 million. However, not all players share this purse equally. Prize money is distributed based on each player’s performance in a given tournament, with the winner taking home the largest share.

For example, in 2021, the U.S. Women’s Open had the highest purse on the LPGA Tour, at $5.5 million. The winner, Yuka Saso, received $1 million, while the runner-up took home $594,000. Players who missed the cut or finished at the bottom of the leaderboard received significantly less, sometimes just a few thousand dollars.

Endorsements and Sponsorships

Endorsements and sponsorships make up another significant portion of LPGA players’ earnings. Top players often sign deals with major brands, such as Nike, TaylorMade, and Rolex, to wear their products and promote them in exchange for financial compensation. For the most marketable and successful players, endorsement deals can sometimes surpass their tournament earnings.

Inbee Park, for instance, who has won numerous major championships, has been sponsored by companies like KB Financial Group, Srixon, and FILA. Although specific figures for these deals are not publicly disclosed, they are estimated to be in the millions of dollars.

Teaching and Appearance Fees

Some LPGA players supplement their income by offering private lessons, clinics, and corporate events. These engagements provide additional revenue streams and opportunities for players to interact with fans and promote their personal brand. Rates for these services can vary depending on the player’s profile and skill level, but top-tier players can charge thousands of dollars for an appearance.

LPGA Player Earnings: The Bottom Line

The amount an LPGA player makes depends on several factors, including her performance in tournaments, the number and size of her endorsement deals, and her involvement in teaching or appearances. For the top players, annual earnings can reach into the millions of dollars, while lower-ranked players may struggle to make a comfortable living.

It is important to note that the LPGA Tour has experienced significant growth in recent years, with total prize money and sponsorship deals increasing. This trend is expected to continue, and as the sport gains more popularity and recognition, the earning potential of LPGA players is likely to increase.

2024 RBC Canadian Open prize money payouts for each PGA Tour player at Hamilton Golf & Country Club

HAMILTON, Ontario — Rookie Robert MacIntyre claimed his first PGA Tour title at the RBC Canadian Open. He did so with his father, Dougie, serving as the emergency caddie this week. It was a cool story for the two-time DP World Tour winner and member of the winning European Ryder Cup team in Rome.

But it also comes with a sweet seven-figure check. MacIntyre took home $1.692 million from a purse of $9.4 million. Not bad for a week’s work and for the 27-year-old pride of Oban, Scotland. In fact, he more than doubled his earnings for his previous 15 starts in which he had banked $1,133,146.

2024 RBC Canadian Open odds, field: Surprising PGA picks, predictions from model that's nailed 12 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the rbc canadian open 2024 10,000 times and revealed its surprising golf picks.

tommy-fleetwood-pga-golf-usatsi.jpg

The PGA plays its first tournament of the year north of the United States border as the 2024 RBC Canadian Open tees off from Hamilton Golf Club in Ontario, Canada on Thursday at 6:45 a.m. ET. Rory McIlroy is the +330 favorite and the only golfer ranked in the top 10 in the world competing at the RBC Canadian Open 2024. This leaves a rather wide-open 2024 RBC Canadian Open field with the chance to see new winners and golfers earn valuable points toward the FedEx Cup standings. Sahith Theegala, ranked No. 12 in the world, is listed at +2000 and Tommy Fleetwood, ranked No. 13, is listed at +1800 in the latest 2024 RBC Canadian Open odds.

Canadian Nick Taylor won last year's RBC Canadian Open as a significant longshot with odds longer than 50-1. Could there be a similar longshot with value this year? Taylor is +7000 to repeat as champion, so should you include him to win again in his native country in 2024 RBC Canadian Open bets? Before making any 2024 RBC Canadian Open picks, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

SportsLine's proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000. And at the 2024 PGA Championship, the model correctly called Xander Schauffele's first major victory heading into the weekend.

The model also predicted Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 12 majors entering the weekend, including the last three Masters and the 2024 PGA Championship. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the RBC Canadian Open 2024 field is finalized, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .

Top 2024 RBC Canadian Open predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the RBC Canadian Open 2024: Fleetwood, who finished as the runner-up last year and has the second-shortest odds this year, stumbles and barely cracks the top five. Fleetwood has made the cut in 114 of 136 PGA Tour events that he has played in, but he is still seeking his first victory. He has been outside the top 10 in his last three tournaments this season, including a T49 finish at the RBC Heritage.

Fleetwood ranks outside the top 100 on the PGA Tour in driving distance, GIR percentage and shots gained: approach to green. He did not play in this event when it was hosted by Hamilton Golf Club in 2019, which puts him at a disadvantage against some of the other golfers in the field. SportsLine's model does not like Fleetwood's chances of finally breaking through with a PGA Tour victory this week.  See who else to fade here .

Another surprise: Taylor Pendrith, a 65-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The 32-year-old recently won the CJ Cup Byron Nelson on May 5 and finished 11th or better in four straight tournaments entering the PGA Championship. Pendrith missed the cut at the PGA Championship but he only shot a 1-over par over his two days, keeping him close to the cut line.

Pendrith, a native of Ontario, played in the RBC Canadian Open twice as an amateur at Kent State University and once as a professional, making the cut twice. Pendrith played on various international tours before working his way up to the PGA Tour full-time in the 2021-22 PGA Tour season. Pendrith looks to become the second straight Canadian golfer to win the RBC Canadian Open and Taylor won with similar odds to him last year. Given his stronger play as of late and the chance to compete in his native Ontario, the model projects value in Pendrith to shock the PGA world at 65-1 odds.  See who else to back here .

How to make 2024 RBC Canadian Open picks

The model is also targeting four other golfers with odds of 25-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 RBC Canadian Open, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the RBC Canadian Open 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected RBC Canadian Open leaderboard , all from the model that's nailed 12 golf majors, including the last three Masters and the 2024 PGA Championship.

15-year-old golf phenom to make pga debut in detroit.

Miles Russell PGA Tour Rocket Mortgage Classic

This year's Rocket Mortgage Classic PGA Tour golf tournament will include a contestant not yet old enough to drive the customary courtesy car provided to players.

During a news conference Monday, the tournament's Executive Director Jason Langwell announced that 15-year-old amateur sensation Miles Russell has received a sponsor's exemption to compete in the sixth edition of the event at the Detroit Golf Club at the end of June .

The event in Detroit will be Russell's PGA Tour debut, but the teenager made the cut in a Korn Ferry Tour last month.

Returning to the Rocket Mortgage Classic field this year is defending champion Rickie Fowler , known for his flashy orange clothing and as one of the main sports ambassadors for the Rocket Mortgage brand. Fowler won the event last year — his first victory since 2019 — in a dramatic playoff .

Langwell announced a number of new player commitments on Monday including Minwoo Lee, Chris Kirk and Webb Simpson.

Additionally, Langwell said Stellantis' Jeep brand has signed on as the official automotive partner of the tournament. The brand will sponsor the event's community days.

Other big name commitments announced last month were players Tom Kim and Will Zalatoris, currently ranked as the 26th and 35th best golfers in the world, respectively, based on the Official World Golf Rankings. Langwell said other "household names" in the golf world are expected to be announced in the coming week.

women's pga tour earnings

Appearing virtually at the news conference Monday, Fowler reminisced on his return to the winner's circle and his excitement about returning to compete at Detroit Golf Club, which he noted makes for one of the only "old school" courses the pros play on their normal schedule.

Rocket executives, Fowler said, may have been more excited about seeing him win than he was.

"It was more just a relief for me after the struggles, the hard work," Fowler said. "And then really special for me to have my daughter there. I hadn't won since she had been born."

The Rocket Mortgage Classic launched in 2019, and since then the professional golf world has splintered amid the rise of the Saudi-backed LIV Tour , while Detroit-based Rocket Mortgage has seen the peaks and valleys of the mortgage market since the inception of the annual event.

While Rocket Mortgage's parent company, Rocket Companies Inc., does not break out specific spending on sports advertising, the company's 2023 earnings report shows that expenses related to marketing and advertising declined 22% from one year earlier to about $737 million. Rocket Companies reported a full year loss last year of $390 million , its first annual loss as a public company.

In general, PGA Tour events have experienced plummeting television viewership .

Following this year’s event, the Detroit Golf Club will undergo a $16 million renovation , financed in part by a hike in initiation fees.

U.S. Women's Open contender makes jaw-dropping admission about how she handles pressure

2155641612

Wichanee Meechai reacts to her putt on the 11th green during the third round of the U.S. Women's Open.

Sarah Stier

Wichanee Meechai finds herself navigating uncharted waters at the U.S. Women's Open, where the eight-year LPGA Tour veteran is in a thrilling three-way tie for the lead alongside LPGA winners Minjee Lee and Andrea Lee at five under. On Saturday, the Thai displayed remarkable poise under pressure, shooting an impressive one-under 69 at Lancaster (Pa.) Country Club despite battling what sounds like at time near-body-paralyzing nerves.

"It [being in contention] makes me cannot focus anything," Meechai said. "My brain just stop working. It just like go outside and then just flat. I don't know how to stay it in English, but it's like blank. It's like when you have a lot of pressure you cannot think about anything. You cannot feel your body. You cannot feel your brain. You cannot feel your hands. So I just hate it.

"But you're not going to be able to get rid of it. I think the best part for the three rounds for me, it's like I kind of managed to get along with the pressure. I think that's the best part of the three rounds."

MORE: Three very different golfers contending in the U.S. Women's Open

Meechai's track record doesn't fit your typical U.S. Women's Open contender profile. The 158th-ranked player in the Rolex Women's World Rankings qualified for the championship in early May, and qualifiers rarely win the major. Birdie Kim was the last to do so in 2005. The 31-year-old has never won on the LPGA before, nor has a single top-10 at a major in her career. She had not been within two shots of the lead in her career going into the final round of an LPGA tournament until this week.

Meechai has had a journeywoman career on tour, returning to qualifying school twice in 2017 and 2019 to save her card. Meechai's best season came three years ago when she notched her best career finish of T-5 at the Pure Silk Championship. Her best career major result came the same season at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship (T-12). She finished 57th on the LPGA's money list ($406,770.) The $75,343 paycheck from the major is the most money she has made at an event over her LPGA career.

women's pga tour earnings

Meechai is more used to faltering when in contention than succeeding, as she explained she feared repeating her 2023 KPMG Women's PGA Championship performance this week. At Baltusrol last year, Meechai sat two off the lead with an opening 68. She carded a second-round 80 to miss the cut by a shot and cried in frustration.

"I never think that I'm going to be on the leaderboard or something like that," Meechai said. "But it's great. It feels really good."

Instead of struggling, Meechai is impressively in the top five in strokes gained/approach (third) and SG/putting (fourth) this week with three under-par rounds of 69-67-69 at the par-70 layout.

While Thai golf has risen on the LPGA over the past decade, with Ariya Jutanugarn and Patty Tavatanakit becoming major champions and Atthaya Thitikul becoming the second No. 1 from the nation, Meechai has generally been an affable background character. She went to San Francisco for the 2023 International Crown simply as a spectator and watched her compatriots win at TPC Harding Park.

"I feel so glad that I'm the oldest, kind of oldest in the group right now, like Thai people, and they have a lot of respect on me," Meechai said. "So I'm trying to act pretty cool, to be big sister for them, so I'm kind of proud."

Even amidst sleeping alongside what she believes is a ghost in the house she's staying at near Lancaster Country Club, what kept Meechai awake was contending at the championship. She shared on Golf Channel after the third round that she woke up Saturday around 3:30 a.m., fearing that she had finished playing and had forgotten to sign her scorecard.

"Every time that I sign the scorecard, I'm just like, ‘Is it two signatures?’" Meechai said with a laugh. " Doing like that all the time. So I think it's in very deep in my brain right now."

A victory and its $2.4 million winner's prize would earn Meechai nearly $1 million more than her total career earnings ($1.4 million). With the tournament and its pressure deeply ingrained in her body through 54 holes and its high stakes for her career, Meechai reminds herself of one thing. The event is nothing to be afraid of.

"The golf course is right there," Meechai said. "Everyone just had the same thing. So it's just another round of the tournament. Just go with it and then have fun on the course."

Making Moves: Hinako Shibuno On The Rise

Arpichaya yubol out in front after a 61 at the shoprite lpga classic presented by acer.

Hinako Shibuno

Hinako Shibuno might have come up short in Pennsylvania and missed out on her second LPGA Tour win, but she still had the Move of the Week, jumping 131 spots in the Rolex Women's World Golf Rankings to No. 61. This runner-up finish ties her second-best result as an LPGA Tour member, which came in 2022 at the LOTTE Championship presented by Hoakalei.

Japanese players had a great deal of success last week taming Lancaster Country Club. It was the first major championship in both women's and men's golf history that players representing Japan finished first and second on the leaderboard. Shibuno finished the U.S. Women's Open presented by Ally three shots behind her fellow countrywoman Yuka Saso. She attributes their success to competing on courses similar to Lancaster when playing in Japan.

"I mentioned this (on Saturday) that the Japanese players did very well,” said Shibuno after her final round in Pennsylvania. “I think part of the reason is they hit it very straight, and despite that this course is difficult. There are a lot of ups and downs, and it's slopey. However, the greens here are similar, somewhat similar, to greens in Japan. Maybe that's why they did very well."

Shibuno stormed onto the LPGA Tour scene with her victory at the 2019 AIG Women's Open in her major debut. Yet, after her win, she made the equally stunning decision to forgo the LPGA Tour membership that came with the victory, opting to remain home in Japan and continue her JLPGA Tour career.

She eventually earned membership via LPGA Q-Series in 2021 and has since amassed seven career top-10 finishes, racking up $2,604,290 in career earnings. But her success last week could be a breakthrough moment that propels her back to the LPGA Tour winner's circle later this season.

Olympic Hopeful Yuka Saso Makes Move in Standings

Yuka Saso captured her second career LPGA Tour win and major title at the U.S. Women's Open, moving her from No. 44 to sixth in the Race to the CME Globe standings. The victory helped her ultimately crack the top 10 in the Rolex Rankings for the first time since March of 2022, and Saso is well on her way to representing Japan at the Olympics for a second time, having first done so in Tokyo, where she finished in a tie for ninth.

As the 2024 Olympics draw near, the pressure is on players to perform well and climb the rankings, all in the hope of securing a spot to represent their country in Paris. And Saso is no exception. With only a few more tournaments left before the teams are finalized, the competition is heating up and the stakes are high, and she knows she’s going to have to be on top of her game to make her Paris dreams a reality.

"I think we only have a few more tournaments," said the past Olympian. "Two more after this. I'm not sure where my ranking is right now, but I think trying to play good for the last two events, three events that I have, I think that would give myself a chance to be in the Olympics.”

Saso has one additional top-10 this season to her credit, a tie for ninth at T-Mobile Match Play presented by MGM Rewards. She also ranks second on the Official Money List and is third in the Rolex Player of the Year standings.

U.S.  Solheim Cup Standings Update

Players have shuffled in and out of the top seven positions in the Solheim Cup standings, and the final few guaranteed spots on this year's team are still up for grabs. With Ally Ewing and Andrea Lee tying for third at the U.S. Women’s Open presented by Ally, the pair made the largest jumps in the U.S. Solheim Cup Team point standings. Ewing moved from sixth to fourth, while Lee moved from seventh to fifth after their solid performances at Lancaster Country Club.

Alison Lee (No. 18), Angel Yin (No. 28), Jennifer Kupcho (No. 46) and Lexi Thompson (No. 58) are each vying for one of the two guaranteed spots that go to the top two players in the Rolex Rankings who are not already eligible.

Alison Lee’s T44 result in Pennsylvania moved her down a position in the world rankings to No. 18, while missed cuts from Yin, Kupcho and Thompson dropped them all in the rankings, and they still have work to do if they want to compete for the Americans this September.

The U.S. Team  will comprise the top seven players in the U.S. Solheim Cup standings, the top two in the  Rolex Women's World Golf Rankings  not already eligible, and three captain's picks. The team will be finalized on Aug. 25, 2024, following the AIG Women's Open.

Europe Solheim Cup Standings Update

Charley Hull and Alexandra Forsterling continue to lead the Solheim Cup standings for Team Europe, but Carlota Ciganda has closed the gap and now only trails by nearly nine points for one of the automatic spots on the team. The Spaniard’s T19 finished in Lancaster, Pa., has her at No. 29 in Rolex Rankings, and she is currently one of six players eligible to qualify via the world rankings.

As of today, the six Rolex Rankings qualifiers for the European Team are Celine Boutier (No. 3), Maja Stark (No. 17), Carlota Ciganda (No. 29), Leona Maguire (No. 31), Linn Grant (No. 32) and Georgia Hall (No. 34). The next two players are Madelene Sagstrom (No. 35) and Anna Nordqvist (No. 63).

The European Team  will comprise the top two players in the Europe Solheim Cup standings, the top six players in the  Rolex Women's World Golf Rankings  not already eligible, and four captain's picks. Like the U.S. Team, the European team will be finalized on Aug. 25, 2024, after the conclusion of the AIG Women’s Open.
