Jelly Roll announces Beautifully Broken tour: Here are the dates, how to get tickets

Jelly Roll has announced dates for a run of 37 tour dates to take him from Labor Day through Halloween of 2024.

Tickets will be available starting with various presales beginning on Feb. 26. Additional presales will run throughout the week ahead of the general on-sale beginning on March 1 at 10 a.m. local time on jellyroll615.com .

Among the locales on the country music star's most ambitious tour to date include New York City. Regarding the venue he's playing, it's special.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

After Sept. 27, the next time he speaks with Jon Bon Jovi and Sir Paul McCartney simultaneously, they can swap stories about playing the stage at the "World's Most Famous Arena," Madison Square Garden.

Live Nation produces the "Save Me" and "I Need A Favor" vocalist's Beautifully Broken Tour, starting on Aug. 27 at Salt Lake City's Delta Center. Other stops include Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New Orleans and more.

The tour wraps on Oct. 27 at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Tour openers include Warren Zeiders and Alexandra Kay .

Jelly Roll's 2024 follows a break into mainstream superstardom a year prior.

He enters 2024 as a platinum-selling and multiple Billboard chart-topping Country Music Association and CMT Award-winning, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter. Moreover, his difficult upbringing was featured in a widely seen ABC News documentary .

At 2024's recent People's Choice Awards , the artist born Jason DeFord and Lainey Wilson (his collaborator on a re-released version of "Save Me" ) won awards as the "The Female Country Artist of the Year" and "The Male Country Artist of the Year."

The performer was also featured in an Uber Eats commercial during Super Bowl 58.

Also, Jelly Roll's desire to be "part of the solution" has led him, most recently, to testify in a hearing during an open, hybrid-format session of the United States Senate's Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs entitled, "Stopping the Flow of Fentanyl: Public Awareness and Legislative Solutions."

Jelly Roll's 2024 tour announcement follows his 44-date "Backroad Baptism" tour a year prior, which featured acts including Elle King, Ashley McBryde, Chase Rice, and rappers, including Academy Award-winning legends Three Six Mafia, Struggle Jennings, Merkules and Yelawolf.

"My spirit as a person has changed so much recently," Jelly Roll told The Tennessean , part of the USA TODAY network, in 2023.

"I have love and forgiveness in my heart now. I still have so much work to do, but I hope that people see what I've accomplished and realize if I can do it, that it's possible for them, too."

About Jelly Roll

Award-winning, Grammy nominated Nashville native singer/songwriter Jelly Roll (Jason DeFord) debuted Top 3 on the Billboard 200 All Genre Chart and #2 on the Top Country Album charts with his debut Country Album, Whitsitt Chapel (released June 2nd, 2023) – earning the biggest Country debut album in Billboard Consumption Chart history. Following his sweep at the 2023 CMT Music Awards where he earned 3 awards to become the most awarded artist of the night, the Billboard Country Power List Cover star and “country’s ‘most authentic’ new artist” (The New Yorker) received Billboard’s 2023 Breakthrough Award and the People’s Choice Award for Male Country Artist of the Year. Nominated for Best New Artist and Best Duo/Group Performance for “Save Me (with Lainey Wilson)” at the 2024 GRAMMY Awards, along with eight genre-spanning nominations at the 2024 iHeartRadio Radios, Jelly Roll is one of three artists alongside Morgan Wallen and Luke Combs to have scored three Country Airplay #1s in 2023 and the first to do it with his first three singles. “One of Nashville’s fastest rising stars” (The New York Times), Jelly was a 4X winner at the 2023 People’s Choice Country Awards and was the most nominated male at the 2023 CMA Awards, with five total nominations capturing his first CMA Award for New Artist of the Year. His #1 hit single “Save Me” — a confessional, vulnerable expression of self-doubt— set the stage for his new season of life and took him to new heights including a  Platinum certification from the RIAA on the heels of his 28-week reign at No. 1 on Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart. “Save Me” became his third consecutive #1 single in 2023 following his multi-week #1 hits on Country and Rock radio, “Need A Favor” and “Son of A Sinner.” His current single “Halfway To Hell” is currently at Country radio now

Not just an artist but a humanitarian, Jelly Roll continues to resonate with fans on a global scale while racking up numerous milestones – from playing his sold-out hometown show for 18,000 fans at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena to donating a recording studio at the juvenile detention center he served in as a teen, to the release of his record-breaking documentary by ABC News, “Save Me” -the most watched music documentary on the platform- to his visits with rehab centers and those incarcerated across the US. Featured by Nightline, GMA, GMA3, The New York Times, LA Times, The Tennessean, Billboard, Variety, American Songwriter, CMT and more, his self-built, unconventional industry rise and unique fan connection has garnered praise from numerous outlets, with Variety noting, “for everyone who’s facing the same struggles, Jelly Roll is their Springsteen,” and American Songwriter echoing, “with a string of accolades and an extremely dedicated following, Jelly Roll has emerged as a force to be reckoned with in the music industry.”

ABOUT WARREN ZEIDERS

Warren Zeiders was just 22 years old when he signed his first recording contract with Warner Records’ Los Angeles office. At that point, fresh out of school, the second song he’d ever written called “Ride The Lightning” had seemingly exploded overnight into the social consciousness of young country music fans. After a series of live covers, the track caught fire and ignited a community of true believers before he’d ever toured or played outside his hometown of Hershey, PA. Zeiders’ distinctive, high energy country music is powered by a steady supply of youthful grit, honesty, muscle, and then, there’s that voice ; a world-weary, lived-in, honeyed growl that belie his young years. Hailing from central Pennsylvania—now relocated to Nashville—the 24-year-old singer/songwriter delivers outlaw sermons in his unmistakable authenticity. His music is suited more to the vast wilderness of his home state than the bright lights of the big city injecting a healthy dose of Heartland ethos into his stories of real life and the pitfalls of temptation. He walks a fine line, but it’s that space he lives in—between lonesome outsider and magnetic performer—that helps him relate to listeners from all walks of life through songs fueled by unshakeable soul-searching. After the now-Platinum “Ride The Lightning” became an instant hit with fans, Zeiders released a string of rockin’ but heartfelt tracks on his own 717 Tapes platform and the raucous “ One Hell of an Angel ” that led People Magazine to surmise “Warren Zeiders is a wild horse who sings about the truth.” That momentum continues with his debut album, Pretty Little Poison . Delivered on the heels of his 717 Tapes releases and compilation album — a collection of stripped-back singles and EP songs that introduced his powerhouse voice and sharp songwriting — Pretty Little Poison repositions him as Nashville’s newest headliner at just 24 years of age. The album’s Gold certified title track has taken Zeiders to new heights, reaching the Top 25 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart and Top 5 at Country Radio, and climbing. To date, Warren Zeiders has amassed over 1.8 billion global audio streams, is consistently selling out venues across the country, and is working on new music for his ever-growing legion of fans.

ABOUT ALEXANDRA KAY

Alexandra Kay kindles a profound connection with listeners through her heartfelt melodies, evocative storytelling, and beautifully captivating voice. Born and raised in Waterloo, Illinois, Alexandra found her voice as a teen, using songwriting as a vessel for self-expression and self-discovery.

After two failed major record deals, and a starring role in a Netflix Original series, Alexandra took it upon herself to build the music career she envisioned. Since then, she’s been cementing her status as an independent force in the industry by sharing her music and life online, amassing over 6+ million followers on social media which has led to over 170+ million streams between Apple and Spotify alone AK (as her fans call her) has graced the stage and collaborated with industry titans like Tim McGraw, Tracy Lawrence, Jo Dee Messina, Jelly Roll, Randy Travis, Gary LeVox and more.

In October of 2023 Alexandra dropped her debut album “All Ive Ever Known”. The independently released project spent multiple weeks in the number one spot on the iTunes country charts, debuted at number one on iTunes All Genre and in the top ten on multiple Billboard Charts. The heart wrenching ballad “Everleave” from her debut project has gained tens of millions of views on social media and is currently in rotation on Sirius XM The Highway. With what has been described as a “Taylor Swift-esque” fan base, AK sold over 50,000 tickets to her headline shows in 2023 alone. 2024 is gearing up to be her biggest year yet with multiple main stage performances at the largest festivals in country music, multiple headline runs and the inception of her sophomore album.

Jelly Roll Announces Dates for 2024 Beautifully Broken Tour

Jelly Roll's coming to an arena near you.

For Jelly Roll, 2024's shaping up to be the biggest year of his career. Opportunities that build off the country star's momentum from his breakthrough year of 2023 range from a hilarious Super Bowl ad cameo and a mentor role on "American Idol" to the ambitious Beautifully Broken Tour.

The Beautifully Broken Tour begins on Aug. 27 in Salt Lake City, Utah, with the current itinerary lasting through an Oct. 27 date in Charlotte, NC. Alexandra Kay and Warren Zeiders will provide opening support for each arena stop. The coast-to-coast, 37-stop trek includes a stop at the world's most famous arena, New York City's Madison Square Garden.

Presale ticket opportunities begin this coming Monday (Feb. 26). The following Friday (March 1) at 10 a.m. local time, general on-sale tickets will be available via Jelly Roll's website .

Based on his track record , Jelly Roll will likely find time in some of the cities on tour to stop by correctional facilities to speak with and perform for incarcerated individuals. Last Sunday (Feb. 18), he missed the People's Choice Awards because of a prior commitment at a juvenile detention center back home in Tennessee.

Jelly Roll, the hottest country rapper in the land, is gearing up for his US tour and it couldn't have happened at a better time.

The heavily-tattooed 38 year-old from Nashville raised eyebrows in June when his crossover single "Need A Favor" became the first song to enter the top 10 on both the Country Airplay and Mainstream Rock Airplay charts.

The inspiring tune about having a relationship with God -- but only when he's in trouble -- is the first single from his 8th album, Whitsitt Chapel, an LP that debuted at #1 on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums charts.

2023 has been a sweet year for Jelly Roll who was born Jason Bradley DeFord. In April he won three CMT awards: Male Video of the Year, Breakthrough Male Video of the Year, and CMT Digital-First Performance of the year for his confessional "Son of a Sinner."

That tune also did gangbusters on the charts, hogging the top spot of Billboard’s Emerging Artist Chart for a record-breaking 25 consecutive weeks.

"You were sent here to destroy stereotypes & blaze the trail for all the have nots," his wife Bunnie XO said to her one million Instagram followers after his wins. The couple have been together since 2015 when they met at one of his shows. They were married the following year.

Jelly Roll will be touring with an assemblage of country stars and rappers for the four-month, 44-date Backyard Baptism Tour. Openers will include Ashley McBryde, Caitlynne Curtis, Chase Rice, Elle King, Merkules, Struggle Jennings, Three 6 Mafia, Yelawolf and Josh Adam Meyers. Tickets are available on Jelly Roll's website.

Jelly Roll Announces 2024 Beautifully Broken Tour: ‘Biggest Tour of My Life’

Jelly Roll is gearing up for a big 2024. On Thursday morning (Feb. 22), the singer announced his Beautifully Broken Tour, a trek that will kick off in late August and keep him busy for the next couple of months.

Joining Jelly Roll on the road this fall are "Pretty Little Poison" riser Warren Zeiders , as well as newcomer Alexandra Kay.

The Beautifully Broken Tour will play nearly 40 arena-sized venues across America over a two-month span. It includes some legendary venues, like New York City's Madison Square Garden, and Jelly Roll says it's a bigger live undertaking than any headlining tour he's mounted thus far in his career.

"This is the biggest tour of my life y'all and I'm going to do it really really big this year," the singer said on social media, where he announced the trek. "I can't wait to see y'all at a show. Come party with us!"

Tickets go on sale to the general public beginning March 1, but a variety of pre-sales will be available ahead of time.

Jelly Roll Announces Beautifully Broken Tour 2024: “I’m Going to Do It Really Really Big This Year”

by Clayton Edwards February 22, 2024, 10:26 am

Award-winning country star Jelly Roll is set to embark on his Beautifully Broken Tour this summer. The trek will take him across the United States to hit more than 30 cities. He’ll bring Warren Zieders and Alexandra Kay along as support. Tickets will be available via StubHub starting March 1

Videos by American Songwriter

Jelly Roll’s Beautifully Broken Tour kicks off in Salt Lake City, Utah at the Delta Center on August 27. The tour will keep the Tennessee native on the road throughout late summer and early fall. It comes to an end in Charlotte, North Carolina at the Spectrum Center on October 27.

Jelly Roll got his feet wet with a massive arena and amphitheater tour in 2023. This time, he’s diving into the deep end. Earlier this week, he took to social media to tease the tour and share his feelings about it. “This tour is so big that it scares me a little to release the dates,” he wrote. “I’ve never been nervous before a tour announcement before. But this one is THE ONE,” he added.

Presale tickets will be available via Ticketmaster starting next Tuesday (February 27) at 10 a.m. local time. Then, they go on sale to the public starting next Friday (March 1).  Once tickets go on sale, they’ll be available via StubHub , where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program. StubHub is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

When he announced the tour earlier today, Jelly Roll said, “This is the biggest tour of my life y’all and I’m going to do it really really big this year. I can’t wait to see y’all at a show. Come party with us.” The tour will see him playing at Madison Square Garden among other noteworthy venues.

Set a reminder and head to Stubhub to get your tickets as soon as possible. They won’t last long.

Jelly Roll embraces the crowd from the stage.

Jelly Roll is on a roll.

First, the crossover country-rap star’s hit single “Son of a Sinner” hit number one on the Billboard Country Airplay chart in January 2023.

Now, riding that wave of momentum, he’s announced his massive ‘Backyard Baptism Summer Tour’ that will send him to amphitheaters, county fairs, festivals and arenas all over North America from May through August.

Midway through the run, Jelly Roll’s ‘Backyard Baptism’ will dip into Darien Center, NY’s Darien Lake Performing Arts Center on Aug. 3.

But wait! There’s more!

Jelly Roll won’t be going it alone on this tour.

He’ll be joined by special guest country stars Ashley McBryde, Chase Rice, Elle King, rappers Merkules, Struggle Jennings, Three 6 Mafia, Yelawolf and comedian Josh Adam Meyers on select dates.

“Don’t miss it when this circus comes to your town,” Jelly Roll shared on Instagram .

And if you want to run away with Jelly Roll’s circus, you can grab tickets as early as today .

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, Feb. 24, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before they’re officially on sale.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

Jelly Roll 2023 tour schedule

The ‘Backyard Baptism Tour’ gets underway at Key West, FL’s Coffee Butler Amphitheater on May 5.

From there, the country-fried rapper (or hip-hop influenced country singer) will bring his unique sound to big market cities like Virginia Beach (Aug. 12), Milwaukee (Aug. 18), Las Vegas (Sept. 1), Phoenix (Sept. 16) and Lexington (Oct. 10).

Jelly Roll and co. close the tour at Tampa’s MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre at the Florida State Fair Grounds on Oct. 14.

Plus, he’ll also headline Bloomington, IL’s four-day Tailgates and Tallboys Festival from June 14-17 alongside Nickelback, Chase Rice and Warren Zeiders.

On top of that, Jelly Roll has a handful of co-headlining concerts with Eric Church lined up this year as well.

Want to see if the “Son Of A Sinner” singer is coming to a city near you?

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues, show start times and links to buy tickets can be found here .

Jelly Roll opening acts

As noted earlier, Jelly Roll is bringing along a motley crew of talent along with him this summer.

To get you up to speed, you can check out each of his opening act’s most streamed song (and in Josh Adam Meyers’ case, his podcast) on Spotify below.

Ashley McBryde : “One Night Standards”

Chase Rice : “Eyes On You”

Elle King : “Ex’s & Oh’s”

Merkules : “Bass”

Struggle Jennings : “Fall in the Fall”

Three 6 Mafia : “Stay Fly”

Yelawolf: “Till It’s Gone”

Josh Adam Meyers : “The 500”

Jelly Roll new album

The versatile 38-year-old recently spilled to Music Mayhem that this debut country album is “coming in April or May of 2023.”

“I’m really proud of it. I’m going to have some features on it. It’s a country record for sure,” he continued.

“I think ‘Son of a Sinner’ was just kind of showing people what I could do, but we also got some real kind of rock records on there…and we’ll have a couple of songs where I’m spitting a little bit too. So it’s still true to Jelly Roll for sure.”

In the meantime, you can listen to the album’s expected lead singles, “Need A Favor” and “She” here.

Eminem Joined Jelly Roll Onstage for a Surprise Performance at Michigan Central

The rap icon blew away fans with an iconic impromptu performance.

who's on tour with jelly roll

As if the anticipation for Live From Detroit: The Concert at Michigan Central — which was live streamed on Peacock and is scheduled to air as a one-hour special on NBC — couldn’t get any higher, Jelly Roll upped the ante with a decidedly Shady surprise for fans!

How to watch Jelly Roll and Eminem's performance on Peacock

If you couldn’t catch the live special, that’s okay. A one-hour special version of   Live From Detroit: The Concert at Michigan Central will air on NBC on June 9, starting at 7 p.m. ET/PT. It will be available to stream the next day on Peacock.

Eminem makes an unscheduled appearance at The Concert at Michigan Central

The concert, jam-packed with elite performers and centered around the re-opening of one of the most iconic Detroit landmarks, emphasized the Motor City's vital role in American music.

The event took place on June 6, and as star-studded as the concert lineup was, fans were left with their jaws wide open as famed Detroit native and hip-hop legend, Eminem, took the stage for an impromptu set!

Eminem unveiled his new single, “Houdini,” to the sold-out crowd before launching into fan-favorite renditions of “Sing For the Moment” (with an emphatic helping hand from The Voice guest performer  Jelly Roll ), “Not Afraid.” Oh, and he and rapper Trick-Trick collaborated on the iconic “Welcome 2 Detroit,” a song Trick-Trick hadn’t performed since 2010.

Split of Jelly Roll and Eminem

However, Eminem’s set was leveled up even further thanks to the involvement of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, who served as the 15-time Grammy winner’s backup band — and as a cherry on top, his legendary set ended with a fireworks display over the Detroit skyline! Not a bad way to make an impact, huh?

Where has Eminem been lately?

Despite being one of the most well-known hip-hop acts of all time, Eminem has been living under the radar recently. While he’s occasionally made spot appearances at high-profile events like the 2022 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony for the occasional short set, Eminem has been focusing on family!

Recently, all eyes were on Eminem’s daughter, Hailie, as the 28-year-old got married in May 2024. Eminem attended the joyous day, and People  even shared  an adorable photo of dad and daughter sharing an emotional moment during the father-daughter dance. Eminem has two other children, Alaina, 31, and Stevie, 22, whom he co-parents with his ex-wife, Kim.

Eminem performs at Live from Detroit: The Concert at Michigan Central"

Of course, although he isn’t touring full time these days, Eminem can never say no to collaborating in other creative ways. He joined his pals Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and 50 Cent for a hilarious sketch on Jimmy Kimmel Live .

Jelly Roll Says He's Having Trouble Booking an International Tour 'Because of My Felonies'

"We're working on that. I think it's going to work in my favor," said Jelly, who's been to jail around 40 times for various drug charges

Tasos Katopodis/Getty

It's not easy for Jelly Roll to leave the United States.

In a new Interview Magazine conversation with Jon Bon Jovi , the 39-year-old country star opened up about why he's "not yet" toured internationally, telling the rock icon his past run-ins with the law are to blame.

"I’m so excited [to perform outside the United States]. We’re figuring out the final pieces of some legal puzzles for me to get overseas," said Jelly.

Bob Levey/Getty

"It’s funny, America has finally agreed to let me leave and give me a passport, but some countries won’t let me come because of my felonies," added the Grammy-nominated artist. "We’re working on that. I think it’s going to work in my favor."

Jelly doesn't seem to be too beat up about the issue, as he told Bon Jovi, "For the record I’m a kid from Antioch, Tennessee, whose father never left the southeastern region until he was in his 50s."

"I still have friends in Antioch who have never left," said the "Need a Favor" singer. "They’ve never seen a football game downtown—just watch the Titans on TV every Sunday. I’m like, 'You know the stadium is 18 minutes away, right? We can get a ticket for $10.'"

Amy Sussman/Getty

The musician, born Jason Bradley DeFord, has been to jail around 40 times for various drug charges. He was arrested for the first time at age 14, two years before he was arrested for aggravated robbery, charged as an adult and served over a year in prison — plus seven years' probation.

"I never want to overlook the fact that it was a heinous crime," he told Billboard last year. "This is a grown man looking back at a 16-year-old kid that made the worst decision that he could have made in life and people could have got hurt and, by the grace of God, thankfully, nobody did."

Before Jelly shot to fame over the past few years, earning three No. 1 country hits in 2023 alone, he worked to clean up his act and reevaluate his relationship with certain vices.

Emma McIntyre/Getty Images

“I had to learn that you could drink alcohol without doing cocaine. It took me a long time to learn that,” the "Son of a Sinner" performer  told PEOPLE in December . “I've never said that, but that's real. There was a long time where I just assumed, when people told me they drank without doing cocaine, I was like, I thought we only drank to do cocaine.”

Despite never going to rehab for his drug addiction, Jelly now visits centers across the United States to spend time with people in recovery, bring warm meals and play music.

"I always said that if I ever got in this situation, I would do everything I could to give back," he said. "The fact that just me showing up places can make people happy is such a gift, and I feel like if God gave me that gift, I should show up."

Why Do Jelly Roll’s Past Convictions Make It Hard to Book a European Tour? Immigration Lawyers Explain

While many European countries are likely to allow the "Save Me" singer entry, he might have trouble getting a work permit in the United Kingdom.

By Gil Kaufman

Jelly Roll

Jelly Roll is undoubtedly on a hot streak. After toiling on the edges of the industry for nearly a decade, his career has gone supernova over the past year thanks to his singles “Son of a Sinner,” “Need a Favor” and “Save Me,” the latter of which earned him a Grammy nomination. He rolled across the United States on his 44-city Backroad Baptism Tour in 2023, has played a string of festivals this year and is slated to hit a few more this summer, along with hopping on shows with Morgan Wallen and headlining this fall’s Beautifully Broken tour with Warren Zeiders and Alexandra Kay.

Trending on Billboard

Jelly roll says he’s having trouble booking international tour due to past felonies.

“It’s funny, America has finally agreed to let me leave and give me a passport, but some countries won’t let me come because of my felonies,” he told Bon Jovi. “We’re working on that. I think it’s going to work in my favor.” Then, on Howard Stern ‘s SiriusXM show Wednesday morning (June 12) after the host asked if Jelly’s past misdeeds are still keeping him grounded, the singer said, “I actually got off the phone with a lawyer yesterday, We are working… it’s getting good, it’s starting to look promising. It didn’t look good even just six months ago, but it’s starting to look really promising.”

Jelly Roll has spoken openly about his past scuffles with the law and his jail time, including dozens of stints behind bars on drug charges going back to when he was 14, as well as an arrest at 16 for aggravated robbery that landed him a year in prison when he was tried as an adult; he had been facing a potential 20-year sentence in the case, though he served just over a year behind bars and seven years of probation. He’s also talked about the time in 2008 when, at 23, he was locked up on drug dealing charges when his daughter Bailee was born. Among the repercussions are an inability, until recently, to secure a passport, as well as an inability to vote, volunteer at most nonprofits or own a firearm.

So what’s still keeping him from getting his first passport stamp? Billboard spoke to several prominent European immigration lawyers to find out what the hang-up is and whether Jelly might be able to rock stages overseas in the near future. (The experts agreed to speak in general terms about immigration laws in their country, but had no first-hand knowledge of Jelly Roll’s case.)

First, the good news.

According to the rules about entrance to the 26 European countries that allow unrestricted travel within their borders — collectively known as the Schengen Area, which includes Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Sweden, among others — non-EU nationals can be denied entry if they are considered a “threat to public policy, internal security, public health or the international relations of any EU or Schengen country.”

A prominent Italian immigration lawyer who requested anonymity tells Billboard that once you legally enter a country in the Schengen region, you are free to travel among the countries with a valid passport, as long as you are not listed on INTERPOL’s list of restricted individuals. The region does have a list of serious criminal offenses over the previous decade — or 20 years in the case of terror offenses — that an applicant for entry must report before visiting. The list of barring offenses includes terrorism, human trafficking, child pornography, drug/weapon trafficking, fraud, money laundering, environmental crimes, murder, racketeering, arson and nuclear material trafficking.

Jelly Roll and BMG Partner with Republic to Distribute the Country Superstar’s Next Album

Based on that list, Jelly Roll’s priors do not appear to rise to the level that would bar him from visiting the Schengen countries. The attorney noted, however, that those rules are slated to change in 2025 when non-EU nationals who don’t need a visa to travel to the Schengen area — a list that includes U.S. citizens — will have to apply for travel authorization through the ETIAS travel portal for short-term (90-180 day) stays; at present, if you have a valid passport and don’t plan to stay for more than three months a visa is not required to enter the region.

At press time, a spokesperson for Jelly Roll had not returned Billboard ‘s request for comment on the status of Jelly’s overseas touring plans.

The bad news, according to Matthew James of leading U.K. immigration law firm Bates Wells, is that the United Kingdom has what are called “General Grounds For Refusal” laws that look at whether an individual has previously overstayed their visa in the country as well as a past history of criminality. What gets captured under that rather broad umbrella are subject to either mandatory or discretionary grounds for refusal, which James says are somewhat “opaque.”

For mandatory grounds, James says, “If you’ve received a custodial sentence of more than 12 months, that should be a bar to entering the U.K., so there’s absolutely no chance of you coming in if you’ve done 12 months of jail time,” he says, noting that if you’ve done less than 12 months but are a “persistent offender” with multiple drug offenses you can be refused as a “persistent” offender; you can also be refused if the offense has caused serious harm. Notably, Jelly Roll served more than a year in prison for the aggravated robbery conviction.

However, for artists looking to visit for less than six months to stage a series of performances, there is an added wrinkle that if they’ve received any conviction within 12 months of their visit, their application will also be refused, which should not apply to Jelly Roll since his convictions occurred more than 20 years ago.

The U.K.’s secretary of state could also decide that an individual’s presence in the nation is “not conducive to the public good” because of their character or other reasons, with James pointing to Tyler, the Creator announcing that his lyrical content had gotten him banned from entering the United Kingdom for 3 to 5 years due to his then-violent and misogynistic lyrics. At the time, the Home Office issued a statement reading, “Coming to the U.K. is a privilege, and we expect those who come here to respect our shared values. The Home Secretary has the power to exclude an individual if she considers that his or her presence in the U.K. is not conducive to the public good or if their exclusion is justified on public policy grounds.” Tyler has subsequently been invited to the nation with no incident.

Jelly Roll Unveils Emotional New Single ‘I Am Not Okay’: Stream It Now

Snoop Dogg has talked about how the late Queen Elizabeth II helped him avoid getting booted from England in 1994 when he was facing first- and second-degree murder charges for which he was later acquitted. Ja Rule said he was “ devastated ” when his planned 2024 U.K. tour was canceled after he was denied entry due to his criminal record on gun possession and tax evasion.

James says that, in general, American visitors — especially those coming for permitted paid engagements — can enter the United Kingdom for what are called “permit-free” festivals, such as Glastonbury, without applying for a visa. In a testament to money talking, he added that the ultimate discretion lies with the secretary of state. “If you are a Snoop Dogg and you are about to sell out Wembley Stadium for three nights and it’s going to make a huge amount of money for the U.K. economy and he’s done loads of great work rehabilitating other people and people learning from his errors and never caused another issue since in 20-plus years,” says James, you could likely talk to someone more senior in the government and get some leeway on the rules, which, he notes, are mainly intended to bar known criminals from living in the country.

That said, those who have committed particularly heinous crimes face a different standard. R. Kelly — who is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence on child sex abuse convictions — is unlikely to ever be allowed to perform in the United Kingdom again following his release.

Jelly Roll has talked extensively about the work he’s done talking to youth about his law-breaking days and visiting facilities to share his story, including donating a recording studio to the Davidson County Juvenile Detention Center, where he was incarcerated as a teen, in 2023.

James says that given that Jelly Roll’s arrests and incarcerations occurred mostly when he was young, that he’s clearly worked on rehabilitating himself and that he’s on the upswing of his career, it’s always possible that “overarching discretion” could come into play. This allows officials not to apply the rules in the strictest manner, particularly if an artist’s concerts will bring significant revenue to the United Kingdom and the person is not a perceived risk. “They will fly in on their private plane and play their set at Wembley and then leave,” he says. “They would have to show remorse and a redeemed character and the benefits to society they are bringing and the economic advantages they’re bringing.”

Normani Prioritizes Vibe on Long-Awaited Debut ‘Dopamine’: Album Review

Normani's 'Dopamine'

It’s been a very long, very arduous road for Normani to release her debut album “Dopamine.” On social media, the Nation — her anointed fandom name — pleaded for the record for so many years that when the former Fifth Harmony member finally announced it in February, she did so with a wink-nod, rolling it out with the accompanying website wheresthedamnalbum.com.

At 28, Normani has proven time and again that she’s a tour de force, as a member of Fifth Harmony and with a string of features and one-off solo records. “Motivation,” her arrival single in 2019, was deliciously buoyant, a pop record infused with R&B underpinnings that suggested she was taking the baton from Beyoncé, or even Ariana Grande (who had a co-write on it).

But she rebuffed the song. “I didn’t want to release it, at all,” she told Zach Sang in 2021. “I was kind of forced to.” R&B disguised as pop music is nothing new to Normani — Fifth Harmony coasted on it, Camila Cabello runs and all — but she was determined to define her own sound outside of the expectations that “Motivation” and her career had set.

And perhaps that’s the point. The molasses roll of “Distance” and patter of “Little Secrets” are familiar, but lack the dynamism that Normani so clearly inhabits. From a commercial standpoint, it’s confounding that “1:59” featuring Gunna was released as the first single, but in practice it makes sense. “1:59” is predicated solely on aesthetics, and in the context of the rest of “Dopamine,” it nestles in like a string of yarn sewn into a sleepy quilt.

It’s when she steps outside the fog of “Dopamine,” however rarely, that it shows glimpses of excellence. Opener “Big Boy” featuring Starrah is like an unreleased Neptunes record from the early aughts, pitting plucky bass pops against tinny horns and nods to OutKast. “Take My Time,” perhaps the album’s best song, is confected in a Pop&B mold, a sister companion to “Motivation” that makes you wonder why she ever disavowed it in the first place.

At her core, Normani is a talented singer, with a mercurial voice that operates within the confines of a few registers. She uses it to great effect, recalling the control of Brandy, and the layered vocals employed across the album add texture to the relatively straightforward beats. The vocals are prismatic on “Grip,” a song that echoes the pan flute of Timbaland and Magoo’s “All Y’all,” and haunt on “Lights On.” So it makes sense that Brandy herself shows up on the tail end of “Insomniac,” co-written by Victoria Monet, proffering a meeting of the minds that pays off — somewhat.

It’s in those fleeting moments that “Dopamine” plays its full hand. It’s impossible to live up to the hype of an album as anticipated as this, and in many ways, Normani was set up to fail — perhaps at her own hand, perhaps not — although she doesn’t, at least not completely.

“Dopamine” is an album that could have been a dissection of what she’s been through, or an understanding of how R&B can effectively meet pop on the playing field. But as it stands, it’s simply there, as pleasant as it can be, a token for fans who presaved the album and, more hopefully, a stepping stone to what could one day be her full potential.
