5 reasons to travel to the dominican republic.

There are two types of golf groups. Those who travel to the same destination year after year on the standard annual golf trip, or those who like to explore new destinations and cultures as well as a variety of different golf courses. I am definitely a fan of the latter.

For the golf groups who do like to switch things up, there is a destination that keeps getting mentioned and applauded – Dominican Republic. The island is rapidly becoming a favorite amongst standard vacationers and golf groups alike. Here’s why:

THE RESORTS & HOTELS

Some of the finest resorts and hotels on the planet are located in the Dominican Republic. Wake up to beautiful views of the Caribbean Sea. Eat and drink all that you desire with an all-inclusive plan. Relax and rejuvenate on a white sandy beach. Swim or snorkel in a pristine resort pool or the clear blue ocean.

The choices are endless. Punta Cana in particular offers resorts and hotels for every budget or taste. When it comes to planning a golf trip specifically, talk to one of our experts who will guide you and help you choose the perfect resort for your group.

THE WEATHER

Let’s face it, the weather is freezing wherever you are in the northern hemisphere right now. The Dominican Republic reaches annual highs of 90⁰ and lows of 70⁰! No that is not a typo. Peak season is described as January to April where you will find prime temperatures and low rainfall.

August-November tend to be wetter months and are therefore classed as low season. So if you’re looking for a good deal and do your research, you can find a great few days of sunshine for an absolute bargain. Oh, and just in case you are wondering, no it does not snow.

We have arrived at my favorite reason to travel to the Dominican Republic – the golf. Golf groups should visit Casa de Campo in La Romana to play the fierce and famous Teeth of the Dog, or travel to Punta Cana and test yourself against the ocean-side beasts in the shape of Corales and Punta Espada.

For families or casual golfers, you can find decent inland golf courses on-site at resorts. These include Cana Bay Golf Club at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana, Iberostar Bavaro Golf Club at the Iberostar properties, and The Lakes Golf Club at the Barcelo properties in Bavaro.

No matter where you choose to play in Punta Cana or Casa de Campo you are bound to have an amazing experience! Call our team to get some advice and create the golf vacation of a lifetime.

The food in the Dominican Republic is top notch. If you’re a ‘foodie’, do some research and find the best all-inclusive resorts for gastronomy in the area to help you decide where to stay. Indulge in fresh caught seafood, tropical Dominican fruit and amazing local meats.

THE BEACHES

The Dominican Republic will spoil you with some of the finest beaches in the world. Punta Cana alone provides you with 10 different options. There are not many places on earth where you will find white sand combined with clear turquoise waters reaching highs of 80⁰!

If you are looking for things-to-do at the beach you can arrange excursions and activities via your resort concierge. Activities include snorkeling, water-skiing, fishing, dolphin tours and many, many more.

So if you’re debating whether the Dominican Republic is the best spot for you next golf vacation, go ahead and find out for yourself. You will not be disappointed! Call our golf travel specialists to receive a free quote including your accommodations, tee times and transportation so you never have to worry once you land!

9 family-friendly golf resorts worth visiting this summer

  • Follow on Twitter

At Omni Homestead Resort, the off-course diversions include waterslides.

Courtesy of Omni Resorts

There are two types of golf trips (buddies’ trips and family trips) and they are not at all the same. Some resorts cater to the latter by pairing great courses with activities and attractions for all ages. With summer approaching, here are nine destinations where you and the whole gang can get your kicks.

Big Cedar Lodge

Ridgedale, Mo. / Learn more or book here

Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris has been called the “Walt Disney of the Ozarks.” Think of Big Cedar as his theme park. Designed to celebrate the natural beauty of the Missouri region where Morris was born and raised, the resort combines a quintet of top-notch courses (including Payne’s Valley, Tiger Woods’ first public access design) with a bounty of outdoor activities . Of course, there is fishing — lots and lots of fishing — as well as kayaking, boat cruises, biking and guided tours of an astounding network of limestone caves.

Omni La Costa Resort & Spa

Carsblad, Calif. / Learn more or book here

With two 18-hole courses (including the newly renovated North Course, which hosted this year’s NCAA Division I Championships), Omni La Costa offers all the golf you can eat. But it also serves the game in bite-size portions, with “express tees” on both layouts that measure under 5,000 yards, ideal for beginners of all ages. Children under 15 play for free, and the family-friendly perks don’t end there. Upon arrival, kids receive a backpack filled with menu items, a fitting introduction to a property that features a full slate of activities and attractions, ranging from nighttime s’mores roasting and poolside ‘dive-in’ movies to a pair of 100-foot waterslides.

Boyne Mountain Resort

Boyne Falls, Mich. / Learn more or book here

Boyne there, done that? Then you probably know about the two terrific courses — the Alpine and the Mountain. But if all you did was play golf, you missed out on all kinds of other diversions, including hiking, biking, fishing, zip lining and the family-centric fun of an indoor water park.

Omni Bedford Springs

Bedford, Pa. / Learn more or book here

Everything old feels new again at Omni Bedford, including the Old Course, an historic design (it bears the imprint of both Donald Ross and A.W. Tillinghast) that has been restored to its Golden Age roots. For golf architecture buffs, it’s the anchor attraction of a restful destination in the Allegheny Mountains, where guests can also test their aim in archery and axe-throwing or simply take it easy with a soothing spa treatment or a swim in one of the country’s first indoor pools.

Onmi Bedord Springs Resort features a pool and spa fed by natural springs.

Shangri-La Resort

Monkey Island, Okla. / Learn more or book here

Situated on the shores of Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees, Shangri-La takes great advantage of the great outdoors. Hiking. Biking. Fishing. Water-skiing. We could go on. The resort’s recreation complex has basketball and pickleball courts, an upscale arcade replete with simulators and a mini-Fenway Park as a whiffle ball field. And that’s before we get to the game we love most. There are 27 holes of champion golf here, complemented by an 18-hole par-3 course called the Battlefield, which opened last year, with each hole named in honor of an Oklahoma veteran of World War II.

Omni Mount Washington

Bretton Woods, N.H. / Learn more or book here

Sitting alongside 800,000 acres of White Mountain National Forest, guided spring-through-fall activities include mountain biking, horseback riding, fly fishing and rock climbing. There’s also disc golf. And traditional golf of the highest quality on two courses, the historic 9-hole Mountain Pleasant Course, which first opened for play in the late 1800s, and the 18-hole Mountain Washington Course, designed by Donald Ross.

omni mount washington in new hampshire

Westin Kierland Resort & Spa

Scottsdale, Ariz. / Learn more or book here

There are water hazards at the Westin Kierland , but this is 27-holes of user-friendly resort golf (you can even rent Segways to get around), with fairways so wide, it’s hard to get wet. An easier way to do that is on the FlowRider, a simulated wave designed for everything from boogie-boarding to standup surfing (instructors are on hand to show you the ropes). If slower going family fun is what you’re after, try the 900-foot lazy river. You can navigate its mellow currents on an inner tube, though your kids might prefer the waterslide. A nice bonus: the restaurants here are great, but a short walk away you’ll find even more shopping and dining options.

The Hotel Hershey

Hershey, Pa. / Learn more or book here

If Willy Wonka were a golfer (and who’s to say he wasn’t?), he’d want to hang out at this well-appointed hotel, where guests can take advantage of two 18-hole courses (the East and West; the latter a former longtime LPGA stop that also hosted the 1940 PGA Championship), plus a 9-hole course and a putting course, both of which were designed with juniors in mind. Let’s be honest, though. The biggest draw for kids lies down the road at Hershey Park, an iconic amusement park that tops off its many thrills and spills with a Hershey’s Chocolate Tour.

Omni Homestead Resort

Hot Springs, Va. / Learn more or book here

You can hardly swing a sand wedge around these parts without knocking into mention of Sam Snead, who got his start in golf on the Cascades Course, a William Flynn design that has long been a fixture on best-of lists. The Cascades is one of Omni Homestead’s two 18-hole courses (the other is the Old Course, which has the country’s oldest first tee in continuous use). Snead once said that he played golf to support his fishing habit. He’d be happy to know that the Omni Homestead offers that (guided fly fishing tours), along with horseback riding, clay shooting and other outdoor activities. Indoors, there’s a range of options, including a turn-of-the-century movie theater and a kids’ adventure program filled with rainy-day diversions such as giant Jenga, giant checkers, Twister and more.

Grandover Resort Delivers on Total Golf Experience

grandover resort east

North Carolina makes a good case for being the most golf-blessed state in the U.S.

Both the “Home of American Golf” (the famed Sandhills region) and the “Cradle of American Golf” (storied Pinehurst Resort) are located in the friendly confines of the Tar Heel State.

Technically, even the “North Strand” of the Myrtle Beach “Grand Strand” lies in bucolic Brunswick County.

Golfers here are so spoiled, they can play one day in the Blue Ridge Mountains around haute Cashiers, hipster Asheville or collegiate Boone, and another day along the sandy shores of the Outer Banks or around historic Wilmington.

In between, ultra-modern, midsize cities like Raleigh, Charlotte and Winston-Salem beckon with myriad daily fee options.

However, one of North Carolina’s most over-looked golf destinations is hidden in plain sight.

The reimagined Grandover Resort in revitalized Greensboro is situated so close to bustling I-85, it feels like there should be an exit ramp straight into the parking lot.

The hotel, golf courses, amenities and surrounding materplanned community are the vision of the late Greensboro businessman and developer Joseph Koury. Koury passed away in 1998, but his spirit lives on throughout the hallways and fairways of The Grandover.

Rising from the rolling Piedmont like a monolithic ode to the Triad Region, Grandover’s centerpiece is a 244-room hotel that recently underwent a stunning $10 million renovation. Ownership and management did an admirable job of not just upgrading the rooms, restaurants and meeting space, but pulling in the rich history and culture of the state’s “Triad” region.

The hotel’s five luxury suites are themed to pay homage to Triad’s “industries, arts and people,” and guests can enjoy original art by North Carolina-based artists throughout the property. The lobby currently houses a Draper X-3 Loom from the former Cone Mills White Oak Denim Plant, the world’s largest producer of denim throughout most the 20 th century.

“The Koury Corporation continues to reinvest in our community,” says Grandover general manager Kelly Harrill. “This is truly the best Grandover has ever been and we hope all our friends and neighbors will come out and enjoy it with us.”

Have-clubs-will-travel types, however, will immediately notice the bright green stretches of fairways emanating from the hotel. These would be the resort’s aptly named East and West courses.

Gary Panks and David Graham designed both courses, with the Scottsdale-based Panks taking the lead on both layouts. The 7,100-yard East Course opened in 1996, and is chock-full of elevation changes, wetlands and thick strands of Carolina hardwoods. The West Course opened a year later; slightly hiller, somewhat tighter and features a tinge of links-style design.

The dynamic course duo has hosted four Division III Men’s Golf National Championships and a Division I Regional in 2012. The Grandover is also the staging site and preferred lodging partner of the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship, held Aug. 1-4 at the neighboring Sedgefield Country Club, a private venue that opened in 1926.

The Grandover’s practice facility is so good (traveling golfers take note), the Wyndham Championship utilizes the Grandover practice range for the Wednesday Pro-Am participants to prepare for the day.

No doubt, practice time will be in high demand for this (80 th ) iteration of the tournament. For the first time the $10 million Wyndham Rewards Top 10 bonus pool will be in effect. It offers bonus money — $2 million to the winner – to the top 10 players in the FedEx standings entering the playoffs

Out-of-town golfers and Tour players notwithstanding, The Grandover understands loyalty among local golfers pays the bills. Case in point: longtime director of golf Jonathan York recently introduced the wildly popular “Griffin Club.”

North Carolina residents are eligible to join (for $20) and receive exclusive golf rates, access to a premier tournament series, unique spa, dining and apparel promotions and special clinics, equipment testing and social events.

Grandover’s new 19 & Timber serves at the Griffin Club’s de facto 19 th hole, offering local craft beer and traditional pub fare. It is adorned with a mix of flat screen TVs and prints of Greensboro’s industrial and social past.

“In everything we do, we try to stay true to Mr. Koury’s vision of being both a world-class resort and a place for locals to call home,” says York, who was born and raised in Greensboro and has been with the golf operation since day one. “The hotel renovation and the Griffin Club are prime examples of how we are always striving to meet the needs of our guests and residents.”

Because it is such an accessible and convenient stopover, Grandover’s most popular golf package is a one-night stay-and-play starting at $349 for two players including golf, cart fees, bag storage, range balls and breakfast. For golfers headed south to the Sandhills region, it is the perfect arrival or getaway day round. Tobacco Road, Pinehurst Resort, Southern Pines, Mid Pines and other outstanding venues are just over an hour away.

For additional information on packages, amenities and area attractions, visit www.grandover.com .

When in Greensboro …

North Carolina’s Triad is one of the furniture capitals of the world, so why not a side trip to the largest furniture store in the world? What makes the perfect golf trip? Book early, keep the peace and follow these tips

total golf travel

WHEELING, W.Va. — It’s Saturday night and my feet are sore from walking two wet golf courses for 27 holes. There are 11 of us sitting around a warm living room nursing various injuries.

“How you doin’, Suds?” a friend says, invoking my nickname (don’t ask).

My back’s also a little tight, but my pride’s hurting even more because I’ve lost most of the various bets and matches on this day.

“Finally! I won some money!” cries out a guy who goes by Gerbil (really don’t ask).

It’s the first time I’ve sat down and rested since 7 a.m. and I’m exhausted.

Oh, and one more thing. I’m having the time of my life because I’m experiencing the five sweetest words any golfer can utter: I’m on a golf trip.

I’ve been on several golf trips over the past two decades and I’ve enjoyed some more than others, so here are some tips I’ve picked up along the way for planning the best trip possible.

STAYING CLOSE? 6 Michigan golf courses ranked among America's top 25 publics for best conditions

Who's in charge?

Every trip has to have one person in charge who deals with all the planning and details. Respect this person because they put in untold amounts of effort behind the scenes dealing with logistics, money, travel plans, gripes and resort staff. You may not always agree with this person’s decisions, but unless you want the job, don’t complain or criticize their choices.

In our group, our leader goes by Glitter and he takes care of everything. He makes the reservations, he collects the money, he keeps track of scores and he runs the post-round meetings to tell us who won the daily bets, though individuals pay each other.

A friend in the group who goes by E.T. (always phoning home) organizes a separate trip, has each golfer pay the resort individually and has everyone use the Golf Genius app so that he doesn’t have to track the scores and everyone can see what’s happening in real time. But he collects the betting money and pays out players without much fanfare.

Deciding when and where your group is going is key to having the most options available, especially at more popular destinations. E.T. books his annual trip six-to-eight months in advance. His group travels to a different destination every year, so it’s about as early as he can plan it.

The group I joined for this year’s outing books two years in advance because we go to the same place. Currently, it’s Oglebay Resort in Wheeling. Glitter used to book a year out but since it’s gotten busier, he has found it’s better to book way earlier in order to have the best options. This year’s accommodations were the best yet: a two-story cottage with three bathrooms that comfortably slept 11 people, had two large congregating areas, a covered patio, a fireplace and a grill.

Where to stay

There are a lot of options, ranging from hotel rooms to condos to large cottages and cabins to full-on mansions. I’ve experienced most of these options, but I think staying under one roof, if possible, makes the most sense. It keeps the group cohesive and encourages more socializing. When we’ve split up into adjoining two-bedroom condos, people tend to hunker down in their condos and someone’s always asking something like, “Hey, has anyone seen, Suds?”

But be sure to find a place that lets people get away for a quick nap or some quiet time. It’s a great option to have two or three larger gathering areas. My group had men who ranged in age from their late 30s to late 70s. With televisions in the congregating spaces on both floors, some preferred to hang out and watch golf downstairs while others preferred the NBA or NHL playoffs upstairs.

You can always find a nearby hotel, but I prefer a lodging option on the same property as the courses.

The right package

The world is your oyster when it comes to package choices. It just depends on what your group prefers. My group has always picked a package with a buffet breakfast (who wants to scrounge for food with an 8 a.m. tee time?).

We used to have dinner at the hotel, but having to get dressed for dinner, organizing 12, 16 or 20 people and waiting to get served when the kitchen is running behind on a Friday or Saturday got tiresome. Now we bring food and rotate cooking and cleanup duties. But I do miss hanging around the hotel bar on karaoke night. I do a killer “Ring of Fire.”

If you don’t want the hassle of cooking or cleaning, there’s always a food package you can tailor to your preference. And if you need post-golf entertainment options, having a casino nearby is always a popular choice. In Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, a good example is Island Resort and Casino , which offers a package that includes a round at Greywalls , a nearby acclaimed course.

The courses

I had stopped going on my trip for a while because I was unhappy with the two courses we were playing. They were too hard for many of our golfers and the resort wasn’t maintaining them properly, allowing tree branches to hang over fairways.

Our new location offers three 18-hole courses, with two built by Arnold Palmer and Robert Trent Jones Sr. They can be tough, but they’re fair, playable and keep the action moving with generous fairways. Be sure to account for the skill level of your players and especially the worst ones.

Keep the peace

Any large group will inherently contain a diverse set of viewpoints. Avoid offering too many strong opinions, especially about politics, the economy, race, religion, current events, Christmas, Santa or the Easter Bunny. You get the point. Stay away from any other potentially touchy subject.

Now, let’s be real. Alcohol tends to flow as freely as 4-foot gimmies during a golf trip, so it can be a challenge to maintain decorum. That’s why it’s important for the person in charge to make sure there aren’t any jerks on the trip. No one’s going to get along 100% of the time, but that doesn’t mean you can’t try to get along 100% of the time. And watch out for the televisions. Fox News and MSNBC should be off limits.

Everyone wins

There are countless games to play in golf, from a scramble to a shamble to bingo, bango, bongo, to just about anything you can come up with. There are two keys to these games. Make them equitable so that there isn’t a long-drive competition and keep the teams diverse so that everyone can contribute. You might hear some grousing from people who always want to play with their favorite partners, but that’s not what a golf trip is about.

The second key is to make sure everyone wins something, whether it’s a daily match, a greenie or fewest putts. We used to play two games in which everyone recorded their 18 lowest scores and their 18 highest scores. If you pay the top three spots for 18 highest scores, your worst golfers are sure to win something.

I can promise you this. Even if you’re not the worst in the group, seeing those who are finally win something will make the entire trip worth it.

Rory McIlroy makes first career PGA Tour hole-in-one at Travelers Championship

total golf travel

Rory McIlroy is one of the most accomplished players in all of golf, but on Thursday, he did something he has never done in his PGA Tour career: hit a hole-in-one.

Coming off a second place finish at the U.S. Open , the 34-year-old from Northern Island is hoping to gain momentum with The British Open scheduled next month. But this weekend, McIlroy is competing at the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut.

After an average start of 1-over-par through the 7th hole in the first round, McIlroy teed off at the 214-yard 8th hole. The ball landed 15 feet short of the pin but took a friendly roll into the hole for his first career hole-in-one.

He threw his arms in the air in celebration before high-fiving Tom Kim and Viktor Hovland.

It was a long awaited achievement for the four-time major champion, as it took him 3,532 attempts before scoring his first hole-in-one, according to the PGA Tour .

The shot put McIlroy at 1-under-par, and he finished the first round 2-under-par, in a tie for 46th place.

Is Trump going to prison? What to know about the possible sentence after his conviction

By Kaia Hubbard

Updated on: May 31, 2024 / 6:48 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington — Former President  Donald Trump was found guilty  on all charges in his New York "hush money" trial on Thursday, and the judge overseeing the case will soon venture into uncharted territory to determine whether a former president should be imprisoned for a felony conviction for the first time.

Trump was found guilty of falsifying business records to conceal a $130,000 payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels to buy her silence before the 2016 presidential election. The jury in Manhattan returned its guilty verdict after a trial that stretched six weeks and featured more than 20 witnesses.

Each of the 34 felony charges carries up to a $5,000 fine and four-year prison sentence. But whether Trump will go to prison is another question — one that's up to the judge at sentencing.

When will Trump be sentenced?

The judge set a July 11 date for sentencing following the jury's verdict on Thursday.

The timing is in line with similar white-collar felony cases, where sentencing often takes place anywhere from three to eight weeks after conviction, according to Dan Horwitz, a defense lawyer who formerly prosecuted white-collar cases for the Manhattan District Attorney's office.

The sentencing will happen four days before the start of the Republican National Convention.

What to expect from sentencing

The minimum sentence for falsifying business records in the first degree is zero, so Trump could receive probation or conditional discharge, a sentence of no jail or up to four years for each offense. Trump would likely be ordered to serve the prison time concurrently for each count, so up to four years, total.

"The judge could sentence him to anything between zero and the max," Horwitz said. "So he could sentence him to a period of months in jail, he could sentence him to a period of weeks in jail, he could sentence him to a sentence where he is required, for example, to go to jail every weekend for a period of time and then serve the rest of the sentence on probation."

In an analysis of comparable cases brought by the Manhattan district attorney's office, Norm Eisen, who has written a book about Trump's 2020 election-related federal indictment and served as special counsel in the first impeachment of the former president, found that about 10% resulted in imprisonment. But the circumstances surrounding the case make any across-the-board comparison difficult.

Trump could also be sentenced to home detention, where he would wear an ankle bracelet and be monitored rather than going to jail. Horwitz suggested that a home detention sentence, which walks a middle ground between no punishment and a stint in state prison, might be the most likely outcome. It would also satisfy Trump's unusual security and political situation.

A home detention sentence would also make it possible for Trump to continue campaigning — albeit virtually — with the ability to hold news conferences and remain active on social media. Throughout the trial, Justice Juan Merchan stressed the importance of allowing Trump the ability to campaign and exercise his First Amendment rights as he seeks another term in the White House . But it's just part of the equation that the judge must weigh in his decision.

In an interview on CNN after the verdict, Trump attorney Todd Blanche was asked if he expected prosecutors to seek jail time. "I have no idea," Blanche replied. "Look, there's there's a system in place that that where you rely on precedent, and somebody like President Trump should never, never face a jail sentence based on this conduct."

What will the judge consider in Trump's sentencing?

There are a number of factors that the court can take into consideration for sentencing, including the nature and extent of the conduct, who was hurt, whether there are victims, and acceptance of responsibility, Horwitz said. Trump has repeatedly denied any guilt in the case.

"Courts will credit a defendant who pleads guilty by accepting responsibility for their conduct, as opposed to not accepting responsibility going into trial and getting convicted," Horwitz added, saying that "the sentence after a trial because you didn't accept responsibility is more stringent than it would have otherwise been."

A defendant's conduct during the trial may also play a role, so Trump's repeated violation of Merchan's gag order may be a significant factor in his sentencing. During the trial, Trump was accused over a dozen times of violating a gag order preventing him from making public comments about likely witnesses, jurors, attorneys and court staff involved in the case.

Trump's sentencing may also be complicated by the lifetime Secret Service protection that he's afforded as a former president. The issue came up during the trial, when the judge held Trump in contempt for violating a gag order . Though Trump faced multiple fines, the judge expressed that jailing Trump was "the last thing I want to do" because it would have disrupted the trial and presented challenges for the Secret Service agents tasked with protecting the former president.

"Today's outcome has no bearing on the manner in which the United States Secret Service carries out its protective mission," the Secret Service said in a statement provided to CBS News following the verdict. "Our security measures will proceed unchanged."

Trump's imprisonment would likely need to include a rotation of Secret Service officers, and he would need to be isolated from other inmates. The former president's food and personal items would likely need to be screened for his protection, among other logistical considerations.

"For all settings around the world, we study locations and develop comprehensive and layered protective models that incorporate state of the art technology, protective intelligence and advanced security tactics to safeguard our protectees," Anthony Guglielmi, the Secret Service's chief of communications, said before the verdict.

No U.S. prison has ever previously had to deal with the possible imprisonment of a former president. Horwitz said there are mechanisms for inmates in protective custody at state correctional facilities and jails, but how the process would actually work remains to be seen.

After Trump's conviction on Thursday, the Secret Service said in a new statement that "today's outcome has no bearing on the manner in which the United States Secret Service carries out its protective mission. Our security measures will proceed unchanged."

Where could Trump be imprisoned?

Should Trump be sentenced to a period of home detention, the former president could carry out the sentence outside of New York, for instance, at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, where New York state would coordinate with Florida's probation department, which would monitor Trump's confinement, Horwitz said.

In the event that Trump is sentenced to jail time, the location would depend on the duration of his sentence.

If Trump faces more than one year in jail, New York law requires that his sentence be served in a New York penal facility. But if his sentence is shorter than a year, it would be served in a New York City correctional facility, such as Rikers Island.

What comes next?

Trump could seek to stay the execution of any sentence pending appeal, meaning that he wouldn't have to start serving the sentence until an appeals court makes a decision, which is not uncommon in white collar cases in New York federal courts, Horwitz said. The move could delay any jail time until the election — or even beyond.

In any case, though possible imprisonment raises some hurdles for Trump's presidential campaign, his conviction does not restrict him from continuing to run — even if he's behind bars.
