December marks the beginning of the holiday season in Aruba. Most areas of the island offer festive decorations and events, creating a joyful and vibrant atmosphere. And you can take some amazing pictures for your Instagram.

Another reason to visit Aruba in December is that it is off-season, so it is considerably cheaper to go – and the weather is fantastic.

Visiting Isla Mujeres in December is the best gift you could give to yourself. The beautiful Caribbean island is located at only a 30-minute ferry ride from the popular Mexican beach resort Cancun but it has the more laid-back vibe of a village. 

December is one of the best months because the hurricane season is gone, and you will get the great winter weather but the prices of the low season if you travel before Christmas. 

If you don’t have any budget issues, you can choose to spend Christmas in the Caribbean with a blue sky and warm temperature. 

Isla Mujeres is also not short of things to do in December. You can enjoy some amazing snorkeling trips or scuba diving. Whether you are certified or not you will be able to dive in the spectacular underwater museum (MUSA). 

However, for a quiet time, you can choose one of the luxury hotels away from the noisy downtown, such as Impression by Secrets, located in the south area of the Island, and one of the top luxury All inclusive hotels in Isla Mujeres .

Then you can rent a golf cart and explore the island at your own pace. Make sure you don’t miss Punta Sur Park with the beautiful statues dedicated to the Mayan Gods, and a small Mayan temple. Getting there by sunset is the best time!

The best things to do in Curacao in December are a boat tri p to Klein Curacao and snorkeling on the most amazing beaches on the island.

Visit the beautiful and colorful houses in the colonial capital city of Willemstad and roam through its neighborhoods . Pietermaai District and Punda are among visitor’s favorites.

St Kitts and Nevis are one of the best Caribbean islands to visit in December because it is when the annual Sugar Mas Carnival is held in St Kitts.

Starting mid-December and ending on January 2 nd  the streets of Basseterre are filled with activity with the main carnival events taking place between the J’ouvert parade on December 26 th  and Last Lap which is January 2 nd .

The whole carnival week is worth seeing for the brightly colored costumes, music, and dancing in the traditional Caribbean style. If you get tired of the excitement of carnival then visit the historic Brimstone Hill fortress UNESCO World Heritage site or pop over to sister island Nevis and explore some of the best beaches in the Caribbean.

If you are looking for  where to stay in St Kitts  during this time, then you will want to book well in advance to get the best hotels. If you want to get some sleep then a hotel slightly further out like the Royal St Kitts in Frigate Bay would be most suitable.

For a visit in December, there are a ton of  things to do in Turks and Caicos . Go kite-boarding at Long Bay Beach, enjoy kayaking at Chalk Sound National Park, or take a snorkeling tour. Of course, you can lounge on the beach and relax all day, or explore many of the restaurants and shops on the islands.

The two main islands to visit are Providenciales and Grand Turk. If you’re flying in from an international airport, you’ll likely find the best flight deals to Providenciales.

I know from spending time in Grenada in December that it is a great option. The weather is usually warm and sunny with a cool breeze that makes for perfect days spent relaxing on the beach or hiking to waterfalls. The islands are also boosting tons of dry days during this time

While I could be poetic about all of the incredible destinations in the Caribbean that are worth exploring during December. I understand that some may not feel as comfortable traveling to such places without having some knowledge of their safety and security.

Its crystal-clear blue waters and snow-white powdery sand are like no other. Just beware that this is one of the more expensive islands in the Caribbean, so if you are on a budget you might want to skip this one.

If you are not one to sit on the beach all day, Turks and Caicos offer some epic scuba diving.

With an array of vibrant corals, fish, and sea creatures to explore. Deep sea fishing is also popular, with plenty of tasty species to catch throughout the year.

After a day filled with adventure, you might want to treat yourself to a meal at one of the excellent restaurants near Grace Bay Beach.

Enjoy freshly caught seafood prepared by local chefs while taking in stunning ocean views – it’s an unforgettable experience! 

Grenada in December is one of the most beautiful Caribbean vacations you can take. Located in the West Indies, Grenada is known for its lush landscapes, historical sites, and endless sunshine.

December weather marks the first month after the end of the annual Caribbean hurricane season, which officially begins June 1 and ends Nov. 30. It also is the first month of the winter getaways for northerners from the United States, Canada and Europe seeking to escape the cold and snow.

But not all destinations in the Caribbean allow visitors to bask under a hot sun, lounge in beautiful blue seawater and develop a healthy tan.

When to go to each destination requires careful planning and taking advantage of historical weather data that shows which destinations have the best weather in December.

5 Best Getaways for Warm Weather

The five best getaways for Caribbean weather in December have a combination of warm temperatures, low risk of rain and overall atmosphere.

Caribbean Temperatures in December

Caribbean temperatures in December average in the mid 80s Fahrenheit or high 20s Celsius during the day for most locations. Nighttime lows often drop into the low 70s Fahrenheit or low 20s Celsius.

Parts of the Caribbean have somewhat cooler weather in December, especially at night. Some destinations are too cool for swimming during December, January and February . Strong trade winds add a wind chill factor. For example, on visits to Aruba and Cancun in February, we found almost no one wanted to go into the water because it was surprisingly chilly.

The Bahamas, which lie north of the Caribbean, have cool temperatures that make them popular for land activities but not water activities. (The Bahama islands are in the Atlantic Ocean rather than the Caribbean Sea. But Caribbean cruises often stop there, so they are part of the list.)

The chart at the top using 30-year historical data shows that average daytime temperatures (in red) reach into the 90s Fahrenheit for some locations but only into the 70s for the Bahamas.

Jamaica also is popular for its all-inclusive resorts, and San Juan Puerto Rico is a major embarkation point for many Caribbean cruises. Jamaica also tends to stay warmer than most destinations.

The fact that the Bahamas maintains some popularity during December is more due to its convenient location and many top-level golf courses.

December marks the beginning of the western Caribbean cruise season, so places such as Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel start to see a big jump in visits.

They are more popular in part because western destinations start to go through a dry season.

Although Aruba ranks only sixth place, it is popular for a small island in the southwestern Caribbean because of its warm temperatures during the winter.

Many people consider summer to be the best time of year to travel. I completely disagree. I absolutely love travelling in the off-season and autumn and winter are slowly becoming my favourites. One thing I love about winter travel is how varied it is. You can be shoeshowing through a forest one moment, take a flight and be lounging on a Caribbean island the following day! Speaking of which, if you’re wondering what the best islands to visit in December are, you’ve come to the right place!

Islands escapes often conjure up images of sun-soaked paradises and colourful cocktails. And while this is mainly the case, I’ve also decided to throw in a few non-tropical islands into this list. If you’re considering heading to an island in December, don’t set your sights on the Caribbean just yet!

The Best Islands to Visit in December

For the perfect mix of sun, sea, and snow (trust me!), I’ve rounded up 19 of the best islands to visit in December. Without further ado, these are my top pics.  

Average Temperature : 17°C (62°F)

Let’s start off with an island that isn’t tropical at all. But is still one of the best island escapes to have over the winter months. Malta is a hidden gem in Europe. It represents everything good about winter sun while remaining a somewhat off-the-beaten-path experience. Especially in December. 

You likely won’t be able to catch a tan in Malta in winter. But, you will be able to explore the island without the summer crowds, go hiking, see some fantastic history, and some stunning natural beauty. 

The island is super easy to get around with public transport. Buses can take you to most areas of the island and, while some can be unreliable (mainly the ones coming from the airport – we learned this the hard way), the majority are reliable, efficient, and affordable. However, if buses aren’t your style, it’s fairly simple to hire a car . If you’re from the UK, you’ll also be pleased to know that they drive on the left side of the road which makes getting around very easy. 

While on the island, a few must-sees including the old town of Rabat with its winding cobbled lanes, the historic Mdina, walk the heritage walking trail, and visit the historic temples. I also highly recommend you take a ferry to Gozo, where you’ll find more fantastic temples, beautiful gardens, and a towering citadel with great views. 

Malta is also pretty good for New Year’s Eve with a great party in Valletta and fireworks.

2. Phuket, Thailand

If you’re dreaming of a tropical island escape during the winter months, you can’t go wrong with Phuket, in Thailand. Located south of the country, you can get here via a 1-and-a-half-hour flight from Bangkok . However, some airlines will also fly here directly. I flew into Phuket International Airport, and from there, a short ride took me to my hotel

It’s a fairly touristy destination , but this all depends on where you stay. The island is big enough to offer a bit of everything.

You’ll find pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters, great for swimming and paddling. Explore the bustling markets in Old Phuket Town, where you’ll find a mix of cultural treasures and quirky street art, and for outdoor lovers, activities like snorkelling in the Similan Islands or hiking to the Big Buddha are a must.  

Then, don’t forget to indulge in the local cuisine; the street food here is incredible and so cheap! You can find delicious pad Thai noodles made in front of you for about £1!

Top Tip: Choose your accommodation wisely to avoid the hustle and bustle if that’s not your thing. Patong Beach is lively with its vibrant nightlife, perfect for party animals, while Kata Beach offers a more laid-back atmosphere. 

3. Tenerife, Spain

Average Temperature : 21°C (69°F)

For a dose of volcanic beauty and outdoor adventure, heading to Tenerife in December is always a good idea. The Spanish island is an absolute gem. But, in winter, when the summer crowds have left and the prices have dropped, it’s the perfect escape! 

Located in the Canary Islands, just off the northwest coast of Africa, Tenerife boasts the ‘eternal Spring,’ with a warm climate year-round, making it one of the best islands to visit in December.

The island is a paradise for nature lovers with lush green landscapes, towering volcanic peaks, and beautiful beaches. You can explore the unique landscapes of Teide National Park , relax on the golden shores of Playa de las Américas, or take a scenic drive through the Anaga Rural Park. 

When flying in, most international visitors land at Tenerife South Airport (TFS), conveniently connected to major cities worldwide. From there, getting to your destination is a breeze with taxis and buses readily available. You can also get to Tenerife by ferry from some of the other Canary Islands. 

With average temperatures around 18°C in December, Tenerife offers the perfect blend of warmth and adventure during the winter months.

This is another of the islands in Europe that I consider a bit of a hidden gem . Before my trip to Cyrus, so many people told me that there was nothing to do there except lounge on the beaches and catch a sun tan. But, they could not have been more wrong. 

Cyprus is the perfect blend of history, culture, and mild Mediterranean weather. Situated in the eastern Mediterranean, it boasts a rich history and modern charm. December might not be peak beach weather, but with temperatures hovering around 17°C, it’s ideal for exploring without breaking a sweat. 

Wander through the cobbled streets of charming villages like Omodos or immerse yourself in the fascinating history at the Tombs of the Kings in Paphos . There’s also the wonderful ancient Kourion amphitheatre with its stunning views, the tiny Kolossi Castle, and the gorgeous Aphrodite beach where the goddess was reportedly once spotted.

If you’re here for the festive season, the atmosphere in Cyprus during December is electric. The locals really know how to celebrate the holiday season with delicious food, warm hospitality, and a fantastic fireworks display during New Year’s Eve.

5. Gran Canaria, Spain

Another fantastic option in the Canary Islands, Gran Canaria is one of Europe’s best islands to visit in December. This vibrant island is ideal for those seeking winter warmth. 

In December; Gran Canaria’s average temperature is around 21°C, making it an ideal winter destination. It can get a little cooler at night though, so you may want to pack a light jacket. Even so, it’s a great temperature for both beach strolls and mountain hikes .

Like with Tenerife, there’s lots to do here. Explore the golden sands of Playa del Inglés, visit the dramatic dunes of Maspalomas, or wander through the historic Vegueta district in Las Palmas. The Christmas markets are also well worth a visit, where the island’s unique blend of Spanish and African influences comes through.

Top Tip: If you don’t plan on visiting for Christmas, you’ll find that prices are much cheaper. This is one of the most expensive destinations to fly to for the festive season in Europe because so many people want to escape for some winter sun. The start of December is much more affordable.

6. New York City, USA

Average Temperature : 5°C (41°F)

New York? An island? Well, yes, in fact, it is! The island of Manhatten might not be your traditional island escape but I can’t think of a better city to visit during December (except, perhaps, London ). 

Picture the iconic skyline decorated with festive Christmas lights, the city streets dusted with snow, and the famous ice rinks popping up all over the city. New York comes alive in December and it’s definitely one of the best times to visit. 

It’s definitely not warm, with temperatures hovering around 4°C, but if you fancy a festive escape, you can’t go wrong. A few of the must-sees in New York in winter include ice skating at Rockefeller Center, exploring the festive window displays along Fifth Avenue, and watching a Broadway Show at the Radio City Music Hall.

7. Saint Lucia

Average Temperature : 28°C (82°F)

If you fancy a trip to what is arguably one of the most beautiful Caribbean islands to visit in December, you can’t go wrong with Saint Lucia. With lush landscapes, turquoise waters, and a tropical escape, this Caribbean gem, located in the eastern part of the region, is a slice of paradise that promises an unforgettable winter getaway. 

It’s fairly easy to reach with a flight to the Hewanorra International Airport (UVF). From the UK, a few airlines fly direct including TUI and British Airways, but most will include a stopover in the States. I’d recommend staying in the charming town of Soufrière for its blend of local culture and stunning views of the iconic Pitons. 

December in Saint Lucia means temperatures hovering around 27°C, creating the perfect climate for exploring. Dive into the vibrant marine life with a snorkeling adventure in Anse Chastanet or embark on a scenic hike up Gros Piton for breathtaking panoramas. Don’t miss the Friday Night Street Party in Gros Islet for an authentic taste of local music, food, and dance.

8. Puerto Rico

Average Temperature : 19°C (66°F)

Tucked away in the heart of the Caribbean, this island paradise is the perfect blend of Spanish influence, tropical beauty, and warm hospitality. From Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU), a quick ride gets you to the heart of San Juan, where the charm of Old San Juan awaits with its colourful colonial architecture and cobblestone streets. 

December is one of the best times to visit Puerto Rico, with temperatures hovering around 26°C. This is ideal for both exploring the historic forts and relaxing on the beautiful beaches.

You can explore the local culinary scene with a mofongo feast (a Puerto Rican comfort food made from mashed plantains), and don’t miss the bioluminescent bay in Vieques for a magical nighttime kayak adventure. 

Also, I recommend you venture beyond the tourist hotspots to places like Culebra or El Yunque National Forest for a taste of Puerto Rico’s natural wonders.

Average Temperature : 2°C (35°F)

Our first trip to Iceland was in December, and it still remains one of the best places I’ve ever visited. Located in the North Atlantic Ocean and frequently referred to as “the land of Fire and Ice”, Iceland is one of the best places to visit if you love outdoor adventure and natural beauty. 

The landscapes are stunning. 

Surprisingly, you may not get snow in Iceland in December. The country typically sees the most snowfall in January and February . But, you can still expect icy temperatures, unpredictable weather, and rain. Like the UK , Iceland can be pretty rainy!

It doesn’t really sound like I’m selling it, but if you’re looking for one of the best islands to visit in December, Iceland should be high on your bucket list. Some of the country’s top sights include the Golden Circle , the black beaches on the south coast, the famous Blue Lagoon , and the countless breathtaking waterfalls. You can even dive between the tectonic plates if you wish!

I also highly recommend visiting Reykjavik town centre. The city has great nightlife, lots of fantastic restaurants, some of the quirkiest museums in the world (Penis Museum, anyone?), and wonderful architecture.

Top Tip: For a more secluded hot spring experience, venture beyond the popular spots and discover the lesser-known hot springs like Reykjadalur. 

Average Temperature : 7°C (44°F)

I will never stop telling people how great the UK is to travel to . December is one of the coldest months of the year to travel to the UK, but it’s also easily one of the best. With festive markets up and down the country, a whole host of activities, Christmas light trails , and decorations in all the towns and cities, and one of the best New Year’s Eve Fireworks displays in the world, it’s no wonder so many people flock to the UK in winter. Especially London . 

Most international visitors land at London Heathrow Airport (LHR) or Gatwick Airport (LGW). From there, it’s only a short train ride to the centre of London and from there, you can get a train to pretty much anywhere . Trains run to the south, midlands, and even as far as Scotland in the north. 

Nonetheless, most people stay in London for the festivities. And, to be honest, I don’t blame them! Here, you can witness the dazzling lights along Oxford Street, explore the magical Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park, or catch a classic Christmas play in the West End. There are also so many fantastic Christmas decorations in London , from Covent Garden to the South Bank.

If you’d prefer to head to the Scottish capital, Edinburgh is just as festive . Stroll along the Royal Mile, where the Christmas market comes alive with festive treats and handmade crafts and visit the famous Christmas market with its German stalls and Ferris Wheel. 

Top Tip : Don’t miss the quaint Christmas markets in smaller cities like Bath or York . Areas like the Cotswolds and Cambridge are also worth visiting in winter.

11. Bali, Indonesia

Average Temperature : 3°C (37°F)

A captivating tropical paradise in Indonesia, Bali is an unforgettable escape. Nestled in Southeast Asia, it’s one of the best islands to visit in December. You can expect pretty good temperatures in Bali in December, with weather hovering around 30°C (86°F). 

You’ll also find lush landscapes, pristine beaches, and a delightful cultural heritage with historic ruins and temples. Explore the vibrant local markets, and savor the flavors of mouthwatering Indonesian cuisine. Like Thailand, food is pretty affordable here, so you’ll find it a pretty cheap winter travel destination.

On the cultural side, you can embark on a cultural journey to ancient temples like Uluwatu and Tanah Lot. Immerse yourself in the mesmerising rhythm of traditional Balinese dance performances. And, for nature enthusiasts, don’t miss the breathtaking rice terraces in Ubud or the underwater wonders of Amed’s crystal-clear waters.

Whether you’re dreaming of a laid-back Christmas in luxurious resorts or seeking adventure riding the famous waves at Uluwatu Beach, Bali has a range of experiences. It’s a destination where the holiday season unfolds in diverse ways, perfect for embracing the local customs and traditions along the way.

12. Okinawa, Japan

Okinawa, Japan is a tropical paradise known for its rich culture, traditions, and beautiful beaches. Okinawa is one of Japan’s 47 prefectures and is part of the Ryukyu Islands. Closer to Taiwan than Mainland Japan, Okinawa is a popular tourist destination for travellers from Eastern Asia and the United States given the heavy military presence on the island.

Okinawa has a subtropical climate with average winter temperatures between 19 – 22 degrees Celsius. With its comfortable temperatures, Okinawa is a popular winter escape for many.

Although Okinawa is an island, there are many things to do here especially when it comes to nature and water activities. Diving is the number one attraction here and divers flock to Okinawa all year long, even during the winter months. 

Okinawa is said to have some of the best diving spots and healthiest coral in the world. Other than diving other water activities include snorkeling, boating, and parasailing. If water activities are not high on your to-do list, you can shop at Kokusai Dori, visit Shuri Castle, or visit some of the WWII Sites.  

The best way to explore Okinawa is by car and many of the resorts are located in central to northern Okinawa.

13. Jamaica

Average Temperature : 27°C (80°F)

Jamaica is hands down, one of the ultimate destinations to soak up the sun during winter. This island paradise is a go-to spot all year round (except during hurricane season). The prime time to experience this island is from December to April when you’ll find the best weather.

Up in the northern part of Jamaica, is the most touristy part of the island, stretching from Negril and Montego Bay to Ocho Rios and Port Antonio. The beaches are beautiful, and the coastline is a picture-perfect Caribbean island. There’s no shortage of water sports to dive into either!

Once you’ve settled into your beachside retreat, why not kick things off with a refreshing dip in the pool or a laid-back drink at the pool bar? Take a leisurely stroll along the beach to catch the sunset. For an adventure along Jamaica’s scenic coastline, consider hiring a private boat or joining a group cruise.

The island of Aruba is known for its beautiful white sand beaches and family-friendly activities, and it has warm weather all year long. However, it’s definitely one of the best islands to visit in December and a perfect winter travel destination!

Aruba is a little island located in the Caribbean Sea near South America, and it’s relatively easy to get there by flying from the US. There are even nonstop 3-hour flights to Aruba from US cities like Miami and Fort Lauderdale in Florida.

Winter temperatures in Aruba hover around 27°C (80°F) during the daytime, which is perfect for relaxing on the beach and going swimming. Some of the best beaches in Aruba include gems like Arashi Beach and Baby Beach, which have soft white sand and blue water, without being too crowded. One of the best islands to visit in December in North America is the tropical paradise of Turks and Caicos. North of Haiti and southeast of the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos is a chain of British Caribbean islands that contain some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Turks and Caicos is known primarily as a getaway for well-off Americans and Brits. It’s undeniably one of the most expensive tropical destinations on the planet, but those who can afford it are greeted with spectacular white sand, clear turquoise water, friendly locals, and wondrous sea life.

One of the best things to do in Curacao is hit the beach as the island is full of beautiful turquoise coves. Some popular spots are Cas Abao Beach, Playa Kenepa and Mambo Beach. It’s also known for its colourful, Dutch colonial buildings in the capital city, Willemstad. 

You can walk along the waterfront and the Queen Emma Bridge to see the colourful storefronts. To see a different side of the island, head to Shete Boka National Park, where you can find underground caverns and rocky inlets. Because of the weather, you’ll have a great time exploring the island.

20. Koh Phangan, Thailand

Average Temperature : 29°C (84°F)

Koh Phangan is a beautiful tropical island in the Gulf of Thailand, to the east of the Thai mainland. It neighbours the much larger Koh Samui island.

Throughout the whole winter, you can enjoy balmy weather with December averaging from 25°C to 29°C (77°F to 84.2°F). The rainy season is officially over in November, but you may still experience some rain.

Koh Phangan is not just any ordinary tropical island with pretty beaches. There are just so many different things to do in Koh Phangan . It’s considered a spiritual place for many and the area around Sri Thanu is full of yoga centers and wellness retreats. The whole island is dotted with temples of all kinds.

There are also wonderful hiking opportunities on the island – you can hike to a secluded beach or the top of the highest peak. 

Koh Phangan is amazing for digital nomads, too. There are many lovely cafés ranging from traditional Thai to modern Western. 

And then there’s the monthly Full Moon party, which has made Koh Phangan famous worldwide. In high season, which covers winter, there are often also Half Moon parties held at the Haad Rin area.

21. St Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

Looking for a winter escape? Consider St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands , a paradise in the Caribbean with December temperatures around 77°F to 82°F.

If you are looking for a hidden gem winter destination in the Caribbean then St Kitts and Nevis should be on your list. It is one of the best islands to visit in December, but as the smallest country in the Americas, it is often overlooked in favour of larger islands. Don’t let the small size fool you however as there is still plenty to do in St Kitts and Nevis.

Take a ride on the historic Scenic railway and discover the history of the sugar trade or visit the UNESCO world heritage site Brimstone Hill Fortress. If you want to relax then head over to one of the beaches, check out the beach bars on The Strip or have a lovely day trip to the sister island Nevis which has some of the best beaches in the Caribbean.

If you are visiting in late December you will be in time to catch the annual Sugar Mas Carnival parades which take place from 26 th December through to January 2 nd every year.

23. Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is located in the Caribbean on an island called Hispaniola that it shares with Haiti. The main language spoken is Spanish and the currency is the Dominican Peso. The capital and largest city in the Dominican Republic is Santo Domingo. Popular tourist destinations include Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, La Romana, etc. 

The country is known for its gorgeous landscapes, which include beaches, mountain ranges, and tropical rainforests. It is the perfect winter getaway for those seeking warm weather and beautiful beaches. Mid-November to March is the dry season with temperatures ranging from 25 to 30°C (77 to 86°F).

There are so many things to do in the Dominican Republic – swim in the turquoise waters, go ziplining, lounge on their pristine beaches, try local food, explore the national parks, go for a dune buggy trip, and so on. 

As fun as the Dominican Republic is, keep in mind that the winter is the peak tourist season so it’s advisable to book the resort and the activities in advance to ensure a seamless and enjoyable vacation.

24. Borneo, Malaysia

Borneo is the third-largest island in the world and is shared by Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei. December is a great month to visit the island. It’s a transitional period between the wet and dry seasons, which means a little rainfall but, more importantly: fewer tourists! The average temperature in December ranges hovers around 30 degrees Celcius, making it ideal for outdoor activities although it can be very humid.

As a traveller, you can reach Borneo via flights starting from metropolitan cities like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Jakarta. Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, and Balikpapan are the main cities on the island and from there, domestic flights, ferries, and bus transport can be used to explore the island.

Borneo is mainly known for its incredible biodiversity. The island’s forests are home to orangutans, pygmy elephants, and proboscis monkeys. You can explore these forests through guided tours in more remote areas, however, many national parks like Bako National Park , Gunung Gading, and Tanjung Datu in Sarawak province are also accessible without taking an expensive tour.

For a first-time visit, the Malaysian province of Sarawak is the most accessible for tourists, with many facilities in the capital of Kuching, easy car rental, and a bus line that goes all the way to Brunei and Sabah. If you like diving, make sure to visit the island of Sipadan, known for its incredible underwater world!

25. Tahiti, French Polynesia

An incredible destination to visit no matter what time of the year it is, but especially during the winter is Tahiti. The island is one of the best islands to visit in December. 

It’s located in the South Pacific Ocean and easily accessible via direct 8-9 hour flights from major international airports, like as LAX and SFO. And with average winter temperatures ranging from a balmy 28°C high to a pleasant 21°C low, the island beckons those seeking a warm respite during colder winter months.

The 12 Best Places to Travel in December

When thinking about the best places to travel in December, you may be tempted to view the month through the lens of Christmas—which is understandable, given the wealth of cities that go all out for the holidays . And while we’re always down for a European Christmas market or dazzling lights display, there are plenty of reasons to travel this month outside of the holly and the jolly.

Whether you want to get a jumpstart on ski season or escape the winter doldrums in the Caribbean, here are the 12 best places to travel in December.

Miami, Florida

Many people head to Miami in early December for Art Basel Miami Beach , a glittering, four-day confab (scheduled for December 8–10 in 2023) that lures both the fashion and art worlds. The lineup of artists includes 24 first-time participants (out of 277 total) hailing everywhere from New York to Seoul, plus several guest lectures and dining experiences.

There are plenty of reasons to visit Miami beyond the final moments of Art Basel, of course—namely a booming high-end hotel scene. The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort is an art destination in and of itself, with geometric metal walls and massive sculptures hanging from the lobby ceiling. Other luxurious amenities, like private butlers and a gourmet burger bar, make this the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion. For a beachier (but just as luxurious) stay, head to The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne , located about 15 miles from South Beach. Its ocean views and tequila-stocked restaurant are great any time of year, but this December welcomes a slew of holiday-themed perks, like eggnog in the lobby and peppermint pedicures in the spa.

Yellowstone National Park

If you haven’t visited Yellowstone in the dead of winter, you are missing out on one of the most incredible travel experiences out there. Not only will you escape the typical summer hoards that make it nearly impossible to see wildlife and popular sites like Old Faithful—starting in December, the park is closed to cars and will only allow snowcoaches and snowmobiles to enter—but the relative quiet and icy chills of winter make our oldest national park feel even more like a mystical wonderland. Just imagine: sleepy bison with snow-dusted beards, bright blue pools set against a blanket of white, and boardwalks billowing with steam from the surrounding thermal features.

There are only a couple of in-park lodges open in the winter, but luckily they are incredibly cozy and convenient. Located in the heart of Yellowstone, Old Faithful Snow Lodge will get an extra dose of holiday magic this December, with trees set up throughout the hotel, in-room Christmas sweets, cookie decorating stations, and visits from Santa. Guests can also book several outdoor excursions from the lodge, ranging from guided snowshoe tours to wildlife photo safaris.

The Azores, Portugal

This once-overlooked archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic is tailor-made for adventurers—think whale watching, hiking calderas, and rappelling down waterfalls. (The island of Terceira is home to the only volcano in the world where visitors can explore a chimney and secondary magma chamber, sitting side by side.) And while tourism has caught up to the Azores within the past decade, visiting during the winter gives you a glimpse of what Eden once looked like.

December isn’t chilly here, despite the archipelago’s Atlantic location—the Gulf Stream keeps the year-round temperatures surprisingly balmy, with the mercury rarely dropping below 60 degrees or so. The island of Santa Maria generally boasts the warmest climate, though swimming may be off the table in the winter. If you’re craving water time, pay a visit to a geothermally heated hot spring instead.

Salzburg, Austria

Germany tends to get most of the attention when it comes to Christmas markets (for good reason), but neighboring Austria can be just as festive and charming—especially in the city of Salzburg. It’s not a surprise that the UNESCO World Heritage -listed Old City, which served as the backdrop for The Sound of Music, also fills its famed Christkindlmarkt with song.

With roots dating back to the 15th century, the market’s sing-alongs and traditional wind music are as much a part of the festivities as the mulled wine and stands selling ornaments and fluffy socks. We’re not mad about the bauernkrapfen (fried pastries), either. The market earns extra points for being just steps away from Hotel Goldener Hirsch , one of the world’s oldest luxury hotels and a perfect spot to warm up between outdoor shopping sprees.

Just down the Caribbean coast from the Yucatán with a fraction of the tourism, Belize has transformed from a backpacker haven into a luxury destination over the past few years. (Bonus: It’s only a five-hour flight from New York.) Along with world-class reefs for diving and Mayan ruins for exploring, the country is known for its conservation efforts, particularly when it comes to protecting ocean life. Many hotels and resorts have jumped on the eco-friendly bandwagon, including Turneffe Island Resort , which goes to great lengths to support the population of Antillean Manatees in the nearby Turneffe Atoll. Guests may get a chance to spot the gentle giants while staying on the resort’s 14-acre private island, while gift shop purchases go straight to the Belize Manatee Conservation Program.

Aside from offering an indulgent, adults-only stay on a true white-sand beach, Matachica Resort & Spa provides interactive workshops to learn about the Belize Barrier Reef, including guided scuba diving trips and helicopter tours. Given that December 4 marks World Wildlife Conservation Day, we say there’s no better time to pay these forward-thinking hotels a visit.

Switzerland

Switzerland is always one of the world’s most beautiful countries, but it becomes downright magical come winter: city squares dusted with snow and mountainsides transformed into the best ski slopes on the planet. It can be hard to pick just one Swiss destination to visit in December, which is why hopping on the Glacier Express is the perfect introduction to this wintery wonderland.

The Glacier Express is an eight-hour train ride that connects two of Switzerland’s biggest mountain resorts—Zermatt and St. Moritz—but it’s really more about the journey than the destination here. The train passes over 290 bridges, delivering panoramic views of landmarks like the Oberalp Pass and Matterhorn, and it even includes three-course meals to really help you enjoy every second of the ride.

Charleston, South Carolina

If you want an immersive Christmas experience but aren’t a fan of cold weather, Charleston is the perfect destination for you. In fact, we’d argue that winter is one of the best times to visit, when temperatures hover around the 50s and 60s. Holiday attractions this year include the 34th Annual Holiday Festival of Lights (November 10–December 31, 2023), featuring an estimated 2 million twinkling lights, and Holiday Swing (December 2, 2023), a concert of reimagined Christmas carols courtesy of the Charleston Jazz Orchestra.

The city has no shortage of fabulous hotels, but some notable properties go all out for the holidays. The French Quarter Inn , voted one of the best hotels in Charleston by our readers, will be fully decked out with a Christmas tree and free gingerbread cookies in the rotunda, while the Sleigh Bell Suite comes with even more festive amenities: an in-room eggnog bar, freshly-baked cookies served by the fireplace, holiday movie screenings, and a special reading of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas from Santa himself. Over at The Spectator Hotel , personal butlers assigned to each guest can transform your room with personalized Christmas decorations, plus bring you any treats and drinks you request.

Whistler, Canada

If you’re desperately seeking slopes, you can’t do much better than the largest ski area in North America. With 8,171 acres of skiable terrain and hills ranging in difficulty from green to double-black, the twin peaks of Whistler Blackcomb truly have something for every winter sports enthusiast. Both the Big Red Express lift and Creekside Gondola were reworked a couple of years ago to hold more people, meaning the mountains will feel far less congested and visitors can enjoy even more rounds of powder.

Once you pack up your poles for the day, soak up all the après glory at Whistler Village. Here you’ll find the resort area’s largest concentration of bars and restaurants, ranging from the buzzy high-end seafood restaurant Wild Blue to the upscale yet relaxed Braidwood Tavern . In terms of hotels, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler looks (and feels) like a true fairy tale castle, nestled at the base of Blackcomb.

Santiago, Chile

​​Travelers often overlook Chile’s capital city in favor of splashier South American destinations like Rio or Buenos Aires—but we encourage you not to make that same mistake. Santiago is not only a superb base for outdoor adventure, thanks to its location between the Andes and the Pacific, but it’s an excellent standalone destination for anyone who loves great food, great wine, and plenty of shopping opportunities.

After exploring the city’s coolest neighborhoods, tack on a side trip to Valparaíso—the former seaport home of Pablo Neruda and current headquarters for the Chilean Navy. It’s just a two-hour drive here from Santiago, but you’ll want to plan to stay overnight (and not just because you’ll be drinking a lot of wine). With its colorful hillside houses and abundance of museum-worthy street art, Valparaíso is not an easy place to say goodbye to.

If you’re anything like us, emerging from two years of lockdowns and closed borders has inspired you to finally book that once-in-a-lifetime trip you’ve always dreamed about—like an expedition to Antarctica , for example. The white continent is at its best from December to March, when wildlife is active and the sun shines for nearly 24 hours a day. And while trips like these typically require a lot of advance planning, there’s still time to book a spot on an expedition cruise ship before 2023 wraps up (although you may want to use this time to start researching for next year).

Ponant has about a dozen sailings available through the end of December, with trips ranging from 10 to 15 nights and including stops in South Georgia and the Falkland Islands. Another great option is Quark Expedition’s “Antarctic Explorer: Discovering the 7th Continent” voyage, an 11-day trip with six departure dates within the month of December (plus many in 2024). Each sailing includes the typical stops, but Quark also started offering a majorly cool add-on a few years ago: alpine heli-trekking, in which guests board a helicopter (just imagine those views) and fly to typically inaccessible terrain to enjoy hiking or snowshoeing.

British Virgin Islands

Made up of more than 60 tropical isles, the British Virgin Islands are easily one of the best places to travel in December. The archipelago is the epitome of Caribbean relaxation with white-sand beaches and lush rainforests—not to mention some of the best hotels in the entire region. Richard Branson’s Necker Island is arguably the most famous resort, freshly reconstructed with an emphasis on sustainability. New wind turbines join the existing solar farm so that the resort runs on 90 percent renewable energy. Even the staff uniforms are made from recycled plastic.

Recent years saw the arrival of two new private island resorts, both of which appeared on our 2022 Hot List . Off the northern end of Virgin Gorda, Saba Rock ’s nine-bedroom boutique hotel boasts a bustling rooftop bar, spacious guest rooms, and a seemingly endless supply of water sports. Meanwhile, Branson struck gold again with Moskito Island , located just two miles away from Necker Island. Guests with deep pockets can choose from three private estate rentals, each with its own distinct style. Amenities like private chefs and house managers available to help 24/7—plus the chance of running into Branson himself on the tennis courts—offer a true taste of a billionaire’s vacation.

Paris shines extra bright during the holiday season, from the lights along the Champs-Élysées to store window displays that rival museum art installations. This year is a particularly great time to plan a trip, with inexpensive nonstop flights with French Bee (France’s first low-cost carrier ) and a crop of new hotel openings. Be one of the first to stay at Bulgari Hotel Paris or Hôtel Madame Rêve , housed in a former 24-hour post office—or choose from one of the many established hotels in the city.

For an extra-special holiday experience, book a spot on the “ Paris at the Holidays ” group trip (November 30–December 7) from specialty planning company French Affaires. Curated by France travel expert Elizabeth New Seitz, the trip includes an evening tour of the city’s Christmas lights, a private tour of the Louvre, a Buche de Noel (yule log) cooking class, and French afternoon teas at some of the city’s top palace hotels.

Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico was one of the hardest hit islands, and many parts are still without water or electricity. But that doesn’t mean you should avoid the entire island, and visitors can help by bringing needed supplies. San Juan is slowly getting back to business, and the following hotels are accepting reservations for December: La Concha Resort , Hotel El Convento , Condado Vanderbilt , Best Western Plus Condado Palm Inn & Suites , DoubleTree by Hilton San Juan and Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort . The Dreamcatcher , (which bills itself as San Juan’s only vegetarian hotel), is open with limited services, but is offering voluntourism programs, like rebuilding local farms and raising funds for Puerto Rico Rising . See Puerto Rico will list resources for voluntourism trips beyond San Juan. Travelers can help clean beaches or assist with water filtration through Local Guest and Waves for Water . Finally, Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort near El Yunque will be ready for guests this winter, though the exact date is to be determined.

Though St. Barts in the French West Indies took a direct hit (along with Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, St. Martin/St. Maarten, Turks and Caicos and Dominica), it’s ready for visitors again. For example, the annual Christmas Village in December will still happen, as will the St. Barts 2018 Music Festival in January. While the famed Eden Rock won’t be ready for prime time until 2018, its villas should be ready by mid-November. Many other hotels, villas and cottages will reopen by Thanksgiving. On track are the four-star Le Village St. Barth , boutique Tom Beach Hotel , the intimate Hotel Les Ondines and the suite-only Villa Lodge 4 Epices . Among the more affordable options set to reopen are Ti Morne and Sunset Hotel . Check Facebook and Twitter for the latest updates.

Canouan Island, St. Vincent and The Grenadines

While those with deep pockets are waiting for St. Barts to fully recover, under-the-radar Canouan Island , one of nine inhabited islands in St. Vincent and The Grenadines, is a ready alternative. It recently added the five-star Pink Sands Club , Mandarin Oriental’s first foray into the Caribbean. (It will be renamed Mandarin Oriental Canouan next year if you happen to book at a later date.) The resort opened last year; since then, the new Glossy Bay Marina, one of the first in the region for superyachts, has joined it.

Besides remaining under-the-radar compared to other Caribbean islands, Dominica also took a direct hit from Hurricane Maria. As it’s still recovering, it won’t be ready to welcome visitors until January at the earliest. As of now, only 32 of 73 properties are estimated to be ready by then, but voluntourism is another great option. Discover Dominica is currently compiling more information on voluntourism programs. Visit Discover Dominica for the latest updates, along with its Facebook and Twitter pages. Otherwise, the airport is open, and while the island’s largest property, Fort Young Hotel , is still repairing significant damage, it’s already accepting reservations for January. In the meantime, you can donate to help the staff on its fundraising page . Extreme Dominica , an adventure tour company specializing in canyoning and guided hikes, will resume in December. Finally, dive operations are slated to reopen in January. However, divers should be aware that due to reef damage, the daily number of dives will be limited for the time being.

The Bahamas escaped the hurricanes largely unscathed, which is good news for the long-awaited Baha Mar megaresort in Nassau. The first phase of the project, Grand Hyatt Baha Mar , opened this past spring and encompasses 1,800 rooms, a 100,000-square-foot-casino, a destination spa and an 18-hole golf course. The second phase involves the higher-end SLS, opening in November, while the third phase will introduce the Rosewood as the highest-end option in 2018. All told, the finished product will offer more than 40 dining options (airstream food truck, conch shack, celeb chef restaurants, etc.), 30 upscale stores and 11 swimming pools. Speaking of megaresorts, Altantis will add more authentic Bahamian elements, such as the new Sip Sip restaurant set to open in November. For something quieter, French Leave Resort on the island of Eleuthera will add two new villas by year's end.

Although Antigua’s sister island, Barbuda, was 90 percent destroyed, Antigua sustained little damage by comparison. The Trade Winds Hotel , the five-star Carlisle Bay and Curtain Bluff resorts are all open for business. In fact, Curtain Bluff just completed a $13 million renovation and is raising funds to help Barbuda rebuild via the Old Road Fund . Galley Bay Resort and Spa was damaged, but is reopening on Dec. 15, while Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa is reopening on Dec. 17 after previously-scheduled maintenance.

Jamaica is among the islands that weren’t affected, and this year there are 3,000 new or renovated rooms available. This includes a spate of new hotel openings, many in Montego Bay, including the five-star Breathless Montego Bay Resort & Spa , the all-inclusive Royal Decameron Cornwall Beach and the boutique Zoetry Montego Bay . Beachfront Jewel Grande is another Montego Bay newcomer and is offering 50 percent off for its grand opening — possibly putting butler service within reach. There’s also family-friendly Azul Sensatori , group-friendly Hideaway at Royalton Negril , and the nudist-friendly Grand Lido , all in Negril. Of course, smaller properties deserve love too, and the tourism board has made it easier to find them through a new site for inns and hotels . The board has also launched the Jamaica Blue Mountain Culinary Trail , a self-guided tour of the Blue Mountains that lists 15 places to stop for food and attractions, from the Old Tavern Coffee Estate to Holywell Recreational Park.

Anguilla, in the British West Indies, took a double whammy from Hurricanes Irma and Jose, but it’s not completely closed for business. Just keep in mind that electricity is still being restored to parts of the island, and cleanup and repairs will continue through 2018. Though badly damaged, the airport has resumed limited flights. The Anguilla Tourist Board is also working on a voluntourism program and will be posting updates on how to help. As for hotels, Carimar Beach Club will have its grand reopening on Dec. 21. It is accepting reservations sooner, for a discount, with the understanding that services will be limited and repairs will still be underway. Paradise Cove Resort and Fountain Anguilla have also reopened, while the high-end Frangipani Resort is targeting a soft opening in late December and officially reopening in January. Further out, the iconic Belmond Cap Juluca and the Four Seasons Resort & Residences Anguilla will be reopening in 2018. Check their sites for the latest updates.

Not only was St. Lucia not affected, but it’s also offering as much as 65 percent off hotel rooms through the end of the year. (Suite upgrades and resort credits are other options.) Plus, the island recently added two all-inclusives: Royalton Saint Lucia Resort and Serenity at Coconut Bay , each offering additional deals as well. Another all-inclusive, Bel Jou Hotel is set to reopen in November following major renovations. Meanwhile, Sandals Halcyon Beach added honeymoon butler suites, and yes, those qualify for the 65 percent off discount too. In addition to deals, many hotels are donating to the Caribbean Tourism Recovery Fund . For example, Caille Blanc Villa is donating 15 percent of all bookings made through the end of year and matching individual donations with up to $50 in resort credit.

Hello all, we are looking to go on vacation in the Caribbean in December. But we need heat, and I dont mean just 82 dg as a high for the day. I realize its best to go in summer for the heat we want, but I dont think I can wait a year to see turquoise waters! So what is the hottest Caribbean island in December? Thanks!

Not in my experience. I've been there twice. It would be windy on the east coast, but that isn't where the majority of the lodging is. The West and Southwest coasts are where you will find the nicest beaches for swimming, IMO.

Aruba is incredibly windy.............even the Divi Divi trees are bent over from the wind.......................

We went to Antigua & BArbuda in early December 2011 and found the daily temps in the 80's and at night high 70's not even a cool breeze at night. It was perfect:)

Koh Lanta, Thailand

Temperatures in Mirissa fluctuate just a couple of degrees throughout the year, with highs between 84F (29C) and 89F (32C). Frequent rainfall is to be expected from May to November, but these showers typically pass quickly. 

Tourists have flocked to the former Portuguese enclave of Goa for decades to enjoy its vast golden beaches, famous party scene, and mesmerizing sunsets. 

Lounge on one of the island’s luxurious beaches or head to more secluded sands, where refreshments are available from palm leaf shacks. Shopping is a true cultural experience in Goa —there’s the famous tourist bazaar Anjuna Flea market, as well as the newer Saturday Night Market at Arpora, which becomes a hopping nightlife spot as the sun sets. Don’t miss Aswem, a painfully cool spot on the north Goan coast that regularly attracts A-listers to its upscale resorts and clubs among the sand dunes.

The golden sands of the well-developed Santa Maria Beach are a favored tourist hotspot in Sal, while Ponta Preta Beach offers more rugged scenery, and windsurfers flock to Kite Beach. As the sun sets over Santa Maria, live music, traditional dancing and cocktail bars are to be expected. 

There’s a unique experience to be had at Pedra de Lume—the site of a former salt mine in the crater of an extinct volcano—where the saltwater is believed to have therapeutic properties. Meanwhile, divers flock to Buracona, or ‘The Blue Eye’, where they plunge into a cave filled with blue water brilliantly lit by the sun. Best for a quick getaway

Proximity to Miami—it's just a 30-minute flight—makes the Bahamas a convenient escape. But once you arrive, you'll feel as though you're a world away. Saint martin.

Saint Martin comprises two separate countries in the northeast Caribbean Sea and is divided between its northern French side (Saint-Martin) and it's southern Dutch side (Sint Maarten). There's a rumor that it's sunny here 365 days a year. We couldn't quite confirm that with the weather service, but we can say that every day certainly feels sunny when you're relaxing on one of the 37 beaches on this delightful island or taking to the clear, warm ocean to swim, sail, water ski, snorkel or fish. The temperature on the small island averages 80 degrees and never dips much below 70 degrees, even in the middle of winter.

What to do: Orient Bay Beach is the first stop for many Saint Martin visitors thanks to its long coastline and inviting waters. But since it's on the French side of the island, it's worth noting that clothing is optional (the nudity is mostly relegated to the south section). A visit to Loterie Farm, a nature sanctuary on 135 acres, means an afternoon of hiking and zip-lining through the jungle canopy. Leave time for duty-free shopping on Front Street or plan a day out on a catamaran.

Where to stay: Check into the Orient Beach Hotel , the only lodging right on the sugar-white sand of Orient Bay Beach and the perfect location from which to explore the surrounding beaches, restaurants and shops. Off-season surprises include Fiji and Madagascar; for a limited time only, these are a (relative) bargain. And with the sunny season in full swing Down Under, it’s an ideal time to discover Australia’s most unlikely success story. Plus, our tips on how to do it all as sustainably as possible.

Scotland, UK

Sure, when the sun shines on Scotland , it’s sublime. But there’s also a lot to love about this raw and rugged land in the cold. Nothing is cosier than a few wee drams by a roaring fire after a busy day out in the elements – be that fat-biking East Lothian beaches, or tracking red deer across the Cairngorms’ snow-dusted slopes. Edinburgh in December is, of course, raucously festive, and winter’s a great time to appreciate the hearty fare of the city's best restaurants. But December, which marks the start of the dry season, sees the islands at their best: low rainfall, low humidity, a lovely dry heat, lots of sunshine… You can go swimming with whale sharks and manta rays (at South Ari and the western edges of the atolls). Christmas in New York City is a no-brainer. The scene is cinematically festive, from ice-skating under the Rockefeller Center tree to theatrical window displays in Fifth Avenue department stores. Venice, Italy

The Floating City could be the most beautiful place in Italy , but it’s difficult to know for sure, given its gorgeous visage is always crawling with tourists. Apart from in December, that is, when no one thinks to go. You might imagine the lagoons are best when sparkling under a summer sun, but that, friend, just shows a lack of imagination: watching an icy fog curl spookily from the water’s surface is really quite something. You might even get super-lucky and see snow. Better than that, you can walk through St Mark’s without landing a selfie stick in the eye.

Sustainable travel tip: Visiting out of season is a good start. But one of the biggest problems with over-tourism in Venice is that a lot of people tend to come just for the day, hitting up only the major, over-stuffed sights, and thus bringing little benefit to locals. Instead, spend a few nights in the city, slowly exploring its hidden corners, eating at neighbourhood restaurants and shopping in small, independent stores. It’s not just better for the city, it makes for a much better holiday, too.

St Barth's, Caribbean

Partly because the island is the original discreet-A-lister's sunny paradise of choice with the world's most perfect beaches, restaurants, hotels and villas, and partly because everyone else is. The super-rich, the super-famous, the beautiful and the blessed. Fail to book your December holiday here and you've only got yourself to blame for off-the-charts FOMO as you sit looking out at the rain and scrolling through shots of simply everyone else laughing through perfect teeth on the world's most perfect beaches.

Zermatt, Swiss Alps

The sort of snowy-mountain scene that dream Christmases are made of. Horse-drawn sleighs, twinkling trees, glühwein stalls, a pretty village aglow in a lovely little valley beneath the Matterhorn. And, importantly, snow-sure slopes – 200 astoundingly pretty kilometres of them – from the start of December. All of which makes Zermatt one of Europe's best ski resort .

Sustainable travel tip: What better way to arrive at a car-free resort than by train? Plus, the last leg of the journey features a ride through the stunning valley of Mattertal on a narrow-gauge railway. Hop off the Eurostar from London in Paris (2.5 hours) and catch a high-speed TGV to Lausanne (3.5 hours). From here, at least two trains per hour whisk you to Visp in 90 minutes, and then it’s the narrow-gauge ride to Zermatt (just over an hour).

Where to stay: Zermatt's oldest hotel, the Monte Rosa , sits in a picture-perfect property with amazing views.

For a winter-sun tinselfest, nobody does it bigger and brighter and sparklier than Dubai. From November to January the weather cools to a more bearable 19-25ºC and the sun shines practically all the time; and in December there's the Rugby Sevens and a film festival, pre-Christmas designer sales and record-breaking Christmas trees groaning under the weight of lights and Swarovski crystals, for those who like that kind of thing. Everyone says they don't, then they go to Dubai and find that they kind of do.

Milan, Italy

You might think Italy’s fashion capital too cool to care about Christmas, but Milan is actually one of Europe’s most festive cities this time of year. Early December marks a unique Milanese tradition, the feast of the patron saint, Sant’Ambrogio, wherein an irresistibly twinkly market sets up in the grounds of red-brick fortress Castello Sforzesco. Shop for local foodie treats and handmade trinkets, then reward yourself with mulled wine and castagnaccio (a chestnut and pine-kernel cake). After a sashay around the famous fashion quarter, head to newly cool Zona Tortona: best for Milan’s up-and-coming galleries and design studios (not to mention brunch-time tuna tacos at God Save The Food).

Sustainable travel tip: Getting to Milan by train is super-easy: take the Eurostar from London to Paris (2.5 hours), followed by a high-speed TGV train to Milan (7 hours).

It’s the most peaceful and easygoing country in Central America, but Costa Rica still has bags of excitement and exoticism. Its Pacific coast draws surfers and bohemians practising yoga on its wave-crashed beaches in groovy little beach towns such as Nosara, while its gentle Caribbean shores and islands bring in backpackers and those looking for castaway escapism on its islands. In its interior: jungles, wildlife and volcanoes, with adrenaline kicks in the form of ziplining through the cloud-forest canopy, white-water rafting, hiking up volcanoes and tracking big cats in Corcovado National Park. December is prime beach weather in Costa Rica, and it’s also when humpback whales start to arrive, heading south in search of warmer waters – this is one of the best places in the world to spot them.

Sustainable travel tip: Costa Rica has a strong line in eco-lodges, from the beach to the jungle, and staying in them helps give back to local communities and conservation projects.

Strasbourg, France

We have Strasbourg to thank for the Christmas market . It was here that the first-ever Market of the Infant Christ took place in the 16th century. The capital of hearty-eating, wine-drinking, once-German Alsace also claims to be The Capital of Christmas. In its medieval Grande Ile – the whole historic city, with its preposterously pretty half-timbered houses, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site – rosy-cheeked Alsatians glide around an ice rink, besides market stalls selling toys and trinkets, mulled wine and hot sausage. The tradition endures, though the gifts have been updated – it seems unlikely that they sold scented candles then, though those pretty houses would have benefitted from them after so many helpings of choucroute (French sauerkraut and the Strasbourg speciality, of fermented cabbage and sausage).

If you’re not making the journey just for the Christmas market – and many do – December is a good time to come for the food, in the city and beyond. Alsatian food and wine – full-bodied reds, piles of potatoes, pork in many forms, all very Germanic – is fortifying against the cold, and December is the region’s snowiest month.

Sustainable travel tip: Take the train from London instead of flying – and pack your reusable mug for takeaway gluhweins and chocolat chauds at the market, to limit throwaway cup usage.

Where to stay: In a set of half-timbered buildings, galleried around a cobbled courtyard, the Cour du Corbeau is as old and charming as the Christmas market. Top-floor suites look out across the medieval rooftops.

Sao Paulo, Brazil

While showgirl Rio steals the limelight and the tourists, style capital Sao Paulo has a more savvy, insider feel. Its dynamic inhabitants are making waves in art and architecture, food and fashion – this is the place to shop for swimwear and homeware, then eat at Brazil’s most innovative restaurants. December brings warm, dry spring days, with temperatures on the rise, and there’s a real buzz about the city with lots going on (including São Paulo Art Biennial every other year) before residents decamp en masse to Trancoso or Buzios for the holiday beach parties.

Sustainable travel tip: Cool Pinheiros harbours the small and homegrown. Insecta is one of them – a sustainably-driven shoe shop selling vegan footwear locally made out of old clothes and soled with recycled rubber, and bags made from plastic bottles.

Where to stay: Sitting in 26 green acres of forested parkland in the elegant Morumbi neighbourhood, Pálacio Tangará is the city’s grandest dame. It opened in 2017, joining Hotel du Cap, Eden Rock and Le Bristol Paris as part of the Oetker Collection.

It may be winter, but December is Miami ’s driest month, with daytime temperatures a beach-ready 24ºC. December is also party time – and this is a city that knows how to party. And it’s not just festive fiestas, but also Art Basel Miami Beach, which means parties, launches, shows and happenings all over the place – art has never been sexier – swiftly followed by Art Gaysel, the world’s Queerest Art Fair. Even those who don’t give a fig for art can get involved in the buzz of Miami Design District. Don’t miss murals and music at Basel House .

Sustainable travel tip: Asian restaurant Kyu , which serves up zingy, elegantly plated dishes in Wynwood, supports local partnerships as well as donating trees to African countries to offset the wood they burn to grill their cauliflower, octopus and wagyu beef.

Where to stay: In the last few years a bunch of all-star design hotels have opened in Miami Beach, but Faena endures as one of the funkiest and best.

Canouan, The Grenadines

Temperature in December: 28ºC high; 21ºC low Season: dry Flight time from UK: 12 hours 50 minutes Time difference: GMT -4

It’s the month to see and be seen in the Caribbean . But if you’d rather run away and hide, Canouan makes a fine place to fly under the radar. While everyone else swans around St Barth’s, you can feel smug about Canouan’s tag: ‘The place where billionaires go to get away from millionaires’. Though, thankfully, you don’t need to make ten figures to stay at this tiny island’s Mandarin Oriental , the first in the region, where an Oceanview Suite will set you back a cool four figures instead.

Sustainable travel tip: Canouan is one of only a small number of islands from which you can access Tobago Cays. The Cays are a protected archipelago of small, uninhabited islands and pristine coral reefs. They’re the major government-owned attraction in St Vincent and the Grenadines, so many local vendors and guides depend on them.

Bogota, Colombia

Cartagena hogs all the column inches with its Caribbean-side colonial charms, but for a contemporary sense of Colombia and its creative energies, capital Bogota is the country’s vital – and seriously overlooked – heart. The city’s reputation for rain abates in December, the beginning of the dry season, when the usually chilly climate clings pleasantly to the 20ºCs. Understandably, most make a beeline for La Candelaria, an irresistible mash-up of colonial buildings, cobbles, on-point restaurants and street art, but quietly cool Chapinero Alto is also making a name for itself: think cocktails and vinyl nights at Rin Rin, or a mansion turned multi-level boutique shopping mall, Trama Casa de Creadores. The best views? At the top of 10,000ft Cerro de Monserrate, easily reached by cable car. In December, the peak is decorated with Christmas lights, a fabulous follow-up to sunset.

Sustainable travel tip: An hour or two’s drive outside of Bogota, Chingaza National Natural Park protects residents including the rare spectacled bear, jaguars, toucans and Andean condors. The best way to see it is to book a day hike with a local guide.

Where to stay: The hushed Four Seasons Hotel Casa Medina Bogota feels like a stately home. A sympathetic renovation has enshrined the historical vibe while kicking in smart contemporary elements.

Uganda, Africa

It’s a busy month for tourism to Uganda for good reason: landscapes are lush, but the weather is dry, making the conditions ideal for gorilla tracking. December is also a fine time for boat safaris in search of the Big Five, as animals are drawn from dry land to water sources. Still, as it is a more under-the-radar East African destination, ‘busy’ here is a relative term. Our top tip? Pair wildlife adventures with a trek into the urban jungle. The capital city Kampala is surprisingly charming, between boozy nights at the Sheraton’s well-loved Equator Bar, two-hour-roasted crocodile tail at barbecue restaurant The Lawns, and contemporary shows at Afriart Gallery.

Sustainable travel tip: Check out the Batwa Experience , which offers rainforest hikes with guides from the Batwa tribe, during which you can learn about their history and culture. The Batwa people were evicted from their homeland, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, to create the national park that protects the area’s endangered gorillas; these tours are the only chance they have to revisit their home territory.

Where to stay: At Gorilla Forest Camp , the most established lodge in the region and the only place to stay in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. And thanks to an ongoing process of habituation and protection, it is possible to track one of four gorilla families living in the area from here.

Yellowstone, USA

The world’s first national park is packed pretty much every season outside of winter – but the crowds on those geyser-skimming boardwalks are missing a trick. December is an excellent time for wildlife-spotting, as everything from brown bears to bison pad through thick powder to hot springs for warmth. Snowcoach tours take you to all the main draws – Old Faithful, Grand Canyon of Yellowstone – and you can even ski or snowshoe to sights that you’ll likely have to yourself. Even better, the contrast between the serene snow scene and Yellowstone’s violent volcanic landscape (bubbling mud-pots, steaming rivers) is something you’ll never forget.

Sustainable travel tip: Consider staying in one of the national park’s winter lodges . They’ve done a lot of work on sustainability, including comprehensive recycling, composting, and energy and water conservation; farm-to-fork food; and fuel-efficient tour vehicles.

Fiji, South Pacific

There’s nowhere like Fiji to make UK -in-December gloom seem like a distant memory. Tuck your toes into its dazzling-white sands and you’re officially on Fiji time. When friendly, frangipani-decorated locals say ‘no hurries, no worries’, it’s less a catchphrase, more a way of life. December falls early in the rainy season, meaning occasional, short bursts of afternoon showers relieve the midday heat. Following 2016’s devastating Cyclone Winston, more eco-friendly, culturally aware hotels are popping up to challenge the decadent, mega-honeymoon properties: a Six Senses – set where Tom Hanks filmed Cast Away – runs on Tesla batteries and cooks using organic, locally foraged finds.

Sustainable travel tip: Getting off the beach and out of the hotel is the best way to interact with and contribute to local communities. It’s possible to take multi-day hiking trips into Fiji’s jungles and mountains, which include sleeping in homestays, visiting tribal villages and learning about authentic island life from a local guide. Kyoto, Japan

Japan ’s favourite holiday is New Year (or Oshogatsu). And where better to join in the festivities than its former imperial capital and keeper of ancient traditions? The whole month of December sees Kyoto filled with markets and festivals: Kobo-san and Tenjin-san fleas are big favourites, held around the temples of the same name, and packed with Japanese antiques, kimonos and food carts. Held in early December, Arashiyama Hanatouro is a magical lantern festival that illuminates the famous Arashiyama bamboo forest. Don’t miss the nightly temple illuminations, either: if you get lucky, it might even snow.

Krakow, Poland

Krakow in December looks like a Christmas card. First, take the Eurostar from London to Brussels (about two hours), followed by a high-speed ICE3 to Cologne (2 hours) then a high-speed ICE2 to Berlin (about four hours). Next morning, catch a EuroCity train to Warsaw (about six hours), then an InterCity to Krakow (2.5 hours).

Tasmania, Australia

Now, it’s widely regarded as Australia’s best museum. With that, an edgy crowd are taking over the island and the capital, Hobart, has been transformed. Designer digs such as the sandstone Henry Jones Art Hotel are de rigueur. Revered restaurants including Franklin serve Tasmanian produce: wood-roasted octopus, raw wallaby. The island’s sparkling wine has been raking in global acclaim over the past few years, too. Drink it all at the annual Taste of Tasmania festival, which kicks off in late December, taking rich pickings from the abundant Australian summer.

Sustainable travel tip: One of the best things about Tassie is its untamed wilderness, conserved by both the Parks and Wildlife Service and its Aboriginal peoples. Don’t underestimate the Aussie bush, though: it’s best explored with local operators. Berlin, Germany

There is no bad time to visit Berlin . We love the city in summer, mooching around its kooky-krazy hangouts of creative weirdness – but what a place to party in December! More kookiness in its clubs and bars and the underground haunts of its cool-as-you-like neighbourhoods; and Berlin is one of the best places to spend New Year's Eve in the world, when they throw a city-wide street party with gigs and celebrations all along the Party Mile.

Sustainable travel tip: Trust cutting-edge Berlin to have a thriving sustainable food scene. At vegan FREA, dishes are made using produce from local organic farmers, and the restaurant’s food waste is then composted and returned to those suppliers for use on their crops. For a smart ethical supper, try a 10-course tasting menu of Berlin-grown fare at Nobelhart & Schmutzig in Kreuzberg.

Goa is love-it crazy in December. Every palm tree strung with tinsel and fairy lights, every beach bar rocking with the most beautiful happy-go-lucky just-found-themselves travellers dancing like loons, night and day. The weather is just perfect, and the parties reach fever pitch. Christmas is cause for great celebration throughout India – no more so than in Goa, garlanded and lit up with fireworks, Christmas trees and Santa hats incongruous in the heat and dust. This all rolls into New Year's Eve celebrations, with parties and raves on the beaches and bars (Goa is India's most liberal state). It gets busy, so book ahead. Avoid staying too long in Anjuna, unless you're a hardcore raver – dance til the sun comes up, then head to a quieter spot (we love Arambol, Mandrem, Palolem, all utterly dreamy) for a different kind of sunrise.

Sustainable travel tip: There’s a decent crop of hippie hangouts here serving all-organic vegetarian meals and extolling the virtues of harmony with nature. Yogamagic Eco Retreat , just inland from Anjuna, has both glamping tents and main-house rooms built from reclaimed materials (old haveli doors, furniture made from recycled teak wood or railway sleepers), the showers are solar-heated, and vegetarian and vegan meals are homegrown and locally sourced.

Where to stay: Ahilya by the Sea overlooks a bay of fishing boats in Nerul, and has an airy, beach-house vibe.

Cambodia and Laos

South-East Asia is wonderful in December, the climate just right - which does mean that yes, everyone else wants to visit then, too. But why come when it is wet and unbearably hot? Come in December, and embrace the holiday season, when places to eat and drink are buzzing, when Laos 's beautiful colonial towns (we adore Luang Prabang ) have a happy bustle to them, when Siem Reap is at its liveliest. Cambodia and Laos are big and largely empty countries, where it is always possible to find some space to yourself, even at Angkor Wat (go for sunrise, wherever possible). Yes, it might take a bit more planning and booking ahead, but there if you want to be spontaneous there is always a room in a charming teak house to be found, where birds sing in the banana trees beside the verandah.

Sustainable travel tip : Cambodia’s social-enterprise restaurants are a great way to support local communities in a long-term way, as they offer free hospitality training to young, underprivileged people, helping them forge sustainable careers. In Siem Reap, Sala Baï is a riverside restaurant created by French NGO APLC; capital Phnom Penh has Romdeng, set in a gorgeous colonial building and run by local NGO Mith Samlanh.

Where to stay: Set on a private island, Six Senses Krabey Island has 40 villas and a vast spa.

Surely nowhere is prettier in the snow than Prague . Those perfectly preserved ancient streets, like a fairytale (with a real castle!); those cinnamon-scented Christmas markets where mulled wine makes us buy weird presents and too many Christmas decorations. Pretty, yes, but Prague is also cold as hell in December, which only serves to make its richly-patterned restaurants all the cosier and justify its just-as-rich and fortifying cuisine. Sit in its Art Nouveau gilded interiors, or its underground bars, and warm yourself with roast game and booze.

Sustainable travel tip: Arriving in Prague by train entails a few quick transfers and a bonus night in Brussels. Take the Eurostar from London to the Belgian capital (two hours), stay the night, then catch a morning ICE train to Frankfurt (about three hours). Here, change onto a regional train to Cheb in the Czech Republic (4.5 hours), and then it’s a Czech express train to Prague (about three hours). You’ll arrive in time for a hearty supper and a beer.

The South American beach break with a difference. Most of Uruguay 's neverending white-sand beaches are practically empty even in high season. That high season lasts just a few weeks, in December, and if you like things lively ( Ibiza , Mykonos , Trancoso style), that's when you want to come. You can still find a beach pretty much to yourself, around hippy little José Ignacio , La Barra and Punta del Este . But December is when the wooden-shack restaurants and beach bars and artsy little hotels open their shutters for the Buenos Aires party crowd who hop across the River Plate for Christmas and New Year fun.

The Arctic Circle

Located in the Andalusian region of southern Spain, Seville boasts a number of can't-miss attractions (think: the Real Alcázar and Plaza de España). Although weather this time of year is chilly for Spain (temperatures typically hover in the 50s and 60s), this is still much warmer than many other European destinations. January is one of the driest times of the year in this tropical Central American country.
