Virgin Voyages Sailing Club loyalty program: Everything you need to know

Gene Sloan

Does Virgin Voyages have a loyalty program? The short answer is yes, and it recently got a major overhaul.

That said, the Virgin Voyages Sailing Club, as it's called, is a relatively simple program, as was the case when it was first unveiled in August 2022 .

The program has just three tiers of benefits as compared to five or more at many cruise lines, and it doesn't offer nearly the array of perks that you'll find at bigger cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean .

Still, some of the perks you can get through the program can be quite valuable. They include free laundry service and free premium Wi-Fi at the program's higher tiers, two things that normally can cost quite a bit extra on cruise ships.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

There is also a daily specialty coffee credit for members at the second and third tiers of the program that is like money in the bank if you're a regular latte or cappuccino drinker. And the perks don't end there.

Note that the Virgin Voyages Sailing Club is a loyalty program exclusive to Virgin Voyages, separate from the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club and Virgin Red programs that are connected to other Virgin brands.

Members of those programs in the U.S. can already redeem their Virgin points on sailings on all of the line's current ships: Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady. Capital One cardholders can also access cruises for points through a partnership between Capital One and Virgin Red .

Ways to earn points

The Virgin Voyages Sailing Club point-earning system is about as simple as can be: You earn one credit for every cruise you take with the line.

Unlike at some cruise brands, there are no complicated formulas for earning points that take into account the type of cabin you book or the length of your cruise. It's one cruise, one credit. End of story.

Note that certain low-priced sailings and nonrevenue fares do not get you any credits. To be eligible for a credit, a voyage must be a full-fare sailing that hasn't used a discounted access key or other low-fare pricing methods, such as gifted cruises, comped casino cruises or voyages bought with airline points.

Reduced rate voyages and certain other booking types also are not eligible to earn or receive perks.

Additionally, the credit for voyages doesn't accrue toward perks until 30 days following the completion of the voyage.

Virgin Voyages Sailing Club loyalty levels

There are three tiers to the Virgin Voyages Sailing Club program:

  • Sailing Club membership (after one sailing)
  • Blue Extras (after two sailings)
  • Deep Blue Extras (after four sailings)

The first tier of the program, the basic Sailing Club membership, brings just three relatively minor perks. The most notable is that you become eligible for special offers on cruises.

Additionally, you will be among the first to be alerted to promotions that the line announces. You'll also receive a quarterly members newsletter.

It's not until you reach the second tier of the program, Blue Extras, that you start to get some perks that you can use when on board ships. These include a free specialty coffee every day of your cruise and free laundry service for one bag of laundry per voyage.

Blue Extras members also get:

  • An invitation to an exclusive cocktail event
  • A dedicated phone support line (known as Sailor Services)

The elite level that makes a difference

The Deep Blue Extras level is where your Virgin Voyages Sailing Club membership really starts paying off.

At this level, you can order two specialty coffees per day at no charge, and your complimentary laundry allowance goes up. You'll get two pressed items for free, as well as one specialty cleaning item and a bag of regular laundry.

voyages email

But that's just the appetizer for the main course of perks at this level: a $100 per cruise credit for alcoholic drinks (or, as Virgin likes to call it, a $100 bar tab credit). This is a significant perk, as it amounts to real money saved when cruising, assuming you like to order drinks while at sea.

Deep Blue Extras members also get all the other perks of the two previous tier levels, plus:

  • An unlimited premium Wi-Fi package
  • Access to expedited boarding

The access to expedited boarding is not just for you but your cabin mates, assuming they arrive with you at the terminal. Your cabin mates will also be able to attend the exclusive cocktail event, which is a perk for Blue Extras and Deep Blue Extras members.

Note that many of these perks appear as credits on your final bill. You will still be charged for the premium Wi-Fi when you sign up for it and the specialty coffees when you order them, and the charges will appear on your onboard account, but they will be waived before the end of the voyage when Virgin Voyages runs your credit card.

In addition to being available to cruisers who complete four sailings under the revamped program, the Deep Blue Extras perks are also available to two broad categories of cruisers established under the old program:

  • Sea-Blazers : These are the "pioneers" of Virgin Voyages sailings who cruised with the line in 2021, its first year of operation. In addition to the temporary perks available to all eligible Sailing Club members, this group will get a $125 bar tab bonus for every $300 bar tab purchased every time they sail with the line for the rest of their lives; this was something Virgin Voyages promised them back in 2021.
  • Sea-Rovers : These are customers who sailed with Virgin Voyages at least twice between Jan. 1, 2022, and Dec. 31, 2023. They are receiving all the Deep Blue Extras perks, plus a $100 bar tab bonus for every $300 bar tab purchased through 2024.

Under the new program, Sea-Blazers and Sea-Rovers will continue to receive all the Deep Blue Extras perks through the end of 2025.

Get perks faster with a Sailing Club status match

As of April 3, Virgin Voyages is offering a status match to cruisers who hold loyalty status with other select cruise and travel brands.

The Sailing Club Status Match program, as it's called, offers immediate Sailing Club membership and Blue Extras perks to cruisers who provide confirmation of loyalty status in other programs and have a confirmed eligible booking with Virgin Voyages.

As part of this program, you can receive Blue Extras perks on your very first voyage with Virgin Voyages instead of having to wait until your third cruise with the line.

Virgin Voyages offers this status match with the following loyalty programs:

  • Azamara Circle (for Explorer, Discoverer, Discover Plus and Discover Platinum members)
  • Carnival Cruise Line's VIFP Club (for Platinum and Diamond members)
  • Celebrity Cruises' Captain's Club (for Captain's Club, Elite, Elite Plus and Zenith members)
  • Disney Cruise Line's Castaway Club (for Silver, Gold, Platinum and Pearl members)
  • Holland America's Mariner Society (for 3-Star, 4-Star and 5-Star Mariner members)
  • Norwegian Cruise Line's Latitudes Rewards (for Platinum, Sapphire, Diamond and Ambassador members)
  • Oceania Club (for Gold, Platinum, Diamond and President's Circle members)
  • P&O Peninsular Club (for Mediterranean Tier, Caribbean Tier, Baltic Tier and Ligurian Tier members)
  • Princess Cruises' Captain's Circle (for Platinum and Elite members)
  • Royal Caribbean's Crown & Anchor Society (for Diamond, Diamond Plus and Pinnacle Club members)
  • Virgin Atlantic Flying Club (for Gold members)
  • Virgin Australia Velocity Frequent Flyer (for Gold, Platinum and Beyond members)
  • Windstar Cruises' Yacht Club (for One Star, Two Star, Three Star and Four Star members)

Bottom line

Virgin Voyages has a relatively modest loyalty program with just three tiers and not all that many perks at each of the tiers, but it does offer several valuable perks at its higher tiers, including free laundry service, free premium Wi-Fi and a significant credit toward drinks.

One thing to keep in mind when evaluating the benefits available through the Virgin Voyages Sailing Club loyalty program is that many of the perks that other lines offer cruisers as part of their loyalty programs are already included in the base fares for Virgin Voyages cruises. Virgin Voyages includes gratuities, specialty dining and a basic Wi-Fi package in the fares for every cabin on its ships, for instance. As a result, there are fewer valuable extras to give away to its customers with status in the loyalty program.

Virgin Voyages Issues Warning to Travel Agents Over Deceptive Tactics

Picture of Frank M

  • May 23, 2024

Virgin Voyages is cracking down on what it deems are questionable tactics by some travel agent partners.

Known as “First Mates,” travel agents use solicitation and discounting to boost sales, which the cruise line says are “important and serious” issues.

Email Warning sent to First Mates

John Diorio, VP of North American Sales, warned agent partners to cut out these activities.

It outlined several concerns, such as foregoing a portion of the agent’s 10 percent commission to offer a discount to their customers. This gives a misleading impression the agent is offering a cheaper cruise fare than other intermediaries and the cruise line itself, Diorio says.

Instances of Soliciting Guests

Aerial view of the Virgin Ship

Virgin has also noted that First Mates is soliciting customers in social media groups and asking them to transfer their booking from a different agent or Virgin Voyages to them.

There have also been instances of onboard solicitation. This includes leaving business cards and flyers on ships and in cruise terminals promoting a specific travel agency.

Diorio went on to urge travel agent partners to report any further instances. “If you see any examples of the above, please share them with the Sales Team who will sort them out as quickly as possible.”

Virgin Voyages has a fleet of three cruise ships , with one under construction.

A woman who won a free Virgin Voyages cruise said she would have to spend $8,000 on flights to claim the prize

  • An Australian woman who won a cruise said she would have to pay thousands of dollars to redeem it.
  • Her Virgin Voyages cruise was canceled due to Red Sea tensions, forcing her to rebook.
  • The cruise line offered Europe or Caribbean trips, but she said flights were too expensive.

Insider Today

An Australian woman who won a Virgin Voyages cruise said she and her partner would have to pay a combined $8,000 for flights due to a change in the ship's itinerary.

The woman, who spoke to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) under the pseudonym Morgan, said the flights to the cruise ports are more expensive than the value of the adults-only cruise .

Morgan said she was traveling on a Virgin Airlines flight from Melbourne to her home in Tasmania in November when the passengers on board were told they had won a cruise.

In a video shared to Virgin Voyages' Instagram account in November, a flight attendant FaceTimed with Virgin founder Richard Branson to announce the prize.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Virgin Australia (@virginaustralia)

"I am pleased to gift each adult on board a free Virgin Voyages cruise," Branson said.

The video showed passengers excitedly cheering as flight attendants handed out cruise vouchers.

It is not known if this video is from the same flight that Morgan was on.

Morgan's voucher was for a twin-share cruise out of Australia or New Zealand on the cruise line's newest ship, Resilient Lady , which debuted in May 2023, as shown in a photo of the voucher published by ABC.

Morgan said she was initially "thrilled" as she and her partner used the twin-share voucher to book a cruise out of Brisbane. However, in February, the cruise line announced its upcoming Australia voyages were canceled due to tensions in the Red Sea, according to ABC and The Independent .

As a result, Morgan was told her only option was to redeem her voucher for a Europe or Caribbean voyage — which could cost thousands in flights.

Virgin Voyages has various Caribbean itineraries sailing out of San Juan and Miami, with ports in Tortola, Basseterre, St. John's, Fort-de-France, Castries, Kingstown, and Philipsburg.

Related stories

Morgan said two return flights from her home to the Caribbean would cost $8,000, which is more than the $7,000 value on the cruise voucher.

"When I clarified this with Virgin's PR team they stopped responding," she said.

ABC did not provide the dates and details of the flights Morgan referred to.

According to return flights on Skyscanner viewed by Business Insider, travel from Hobart, the capital of Tasmania, to San Juan can take up to 46 hours across multiple flights.

Prices for return flights varied throughout 2024 and 2025, with the most expensive being just over $2,500.

Virgin Voyages' Europe cruises have itineraries in Ireland, Scotland, and the Mediterranean. Similarly, travel from Hobart to Portsmouth, a cruise port in England, can take up to 44 hours across multiple flights.

BI viewed return flights from Hobart to Portsmouth as costing more than $1,200 on multiple dates throughout 2024.

"We were genuinely shocked, we thought Virgin would provide us with an alternative prize like a flight credit… or they would allow us to rebook on a later season," Morgan said.

"They sort of gave up on us … like 'you're a bit of a problem now,'" she said.

The cruise line's brand could be at risk, says marketing expert

"We apologise to our winners who can no longer redeem their prize due to the cancellation of Virgin Voyages' Australian and New Zealand cruises amid the conflict in the Red Sea," a spokesperson for Virgin Australia Group said in a statement obtained by BI.

They added that "safety is always our number-one priority" and that Virgin Voyages had offered all impacted guests complimentary cruises on its other international sailings.

Balkrushna Potdar, a marketing lecturer at the University of Tasmania, told ABC that Morgan's story could potentially damage Virgin Voyages' brand. The company could gain a reputation for using untrustworthy marketing tactics, Potdar said.

Potdar said the company could make things right by "covering the cost of flights to Europe or the Caribbean."

Virgin Voyages has been widely celebrated for its child-free cruises, which cater to millennial travelers . The company's first ship, Scarlet Lady, set sail in 2021 after being delayed due to the pandemic.

In September 2023, Virgin Voyages announced it had secured $550 million in funding managed by the Private Equity Group of Ares Management.

The funding will be used to enable the cruise line to support the brand's "rapid expansion into international markets, with a relentless focus on creating an outstanding and innovative customer experience," according to a press release.

Virgin Voyages cruise deal offers a month on board with Caribbean season pass

voyages email

Travelers can make a cruise ship in the Caribbean their floating vacation home this summer.

Virgin Voyages is launching a Summer Season Pass on its Valiant Lady ship, allowing guests to sail six back-to-back cruises over the course of a month at a discounted price. The adults-only cruise line added the Caribbean option after seeing high demand for its season passes in the Mediterranean on Resilient Lady and Scarlet Lady earlier this year. The offers are aimed at remote workers who want a change of scenery – though you don’t have to be working to take advantage.

“We heard from travelers in North America who wanted the option to sail the stunning Caribbean and stay a bit closer to home while working in a similar time zone,” a Virgin Voyages spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

What are the terms of the Caribbean Summer Season Pass?

Passengers have the option to take their month at sea in June, July, August or September. Each option includes six back to back cruises over the following dates:

  • June 7-July 5
  • July 5-Aug. 2
  • Sept. 4-Oct. 1

Destinations include Key West, Florida; Bimini in the Bahamas; Costa Maya, Mexico, Grand Turk in Turks and Caicos and more, though stops vary by itinerary.

Cruise booking tips: There's more to it than picking your travel dates

How much does the Caribbean Summer Season Pass cost?

The pass starts at $12,000 for up to two guests, a 25% discount compared to purchasing the cruises separately. Passholders will be booked in Central Sea Terrace cabins and get wash and fold laundry service, two specialty coffees per day, premium Wi-Fi and other perks.

Travelers can book online .

Virgin Voyages free cruise winner says prize will cost her $8,000 in flights after Virgin ends Australian cruises

Images from Virgin free cruise promotion Instagram reel.

Morgan* won a cruise with Virgin Voyages — but cashing in on the trip would mean having to spend $8,000 on flights, more than the value of the original prize.

"We definitely don't love Virgin at the moment," she said.

"I think we feel pretty used to be honest."

Morgan won a twin share cruise in November last year.

She was flying Virgin Airlines to her home state of Tasmania after a work trip in Melbourne when she noticed something unusual at the departure gates.

"They had a lot of cameras around, there was dancing … they asked everybody to wear sailor hats when we boarded our flight."

Once on board, the air steward called Virgin boss Richard Branson on Facetime, who announced everybody had won a free Virgin Voyages Cruise.

"We were thrilled," Morgan said.

"Everyone around me was so excited."

Here is how Virgin promoted the event:

Cruise winner left high and dry

Morgan runs a small business, so gathering together savings and taking time away for a holiday for her and her partner is always tough.

"It was just nice … to get us through a bit of a tough year … to know at the end of the year we could take a break and have this free cruise," she said.

The couple used their prize to book a cruise out of Brisbane, but in February this year they were told all of Virgin's Australian cruises had been cancelled because of ongoing tensions in the Red Sea.

Morgan contacted Virgin's public relations team to see whether she could still redeem the prize and was told her only options were to take a cruise out of Europe or the Caribbean.

She discovered two return flights to the Caribbean would cost $8,000, more than the $7,000 value of original prize.

"When I clarified this with Virgin's PR team they stopped responding," she said.

Morgan said she is keen not to appear entitled but points out that "Virgin got precisely what they wanted; a massive amount of media coverage".

"We know this because people sent us messages from all over Australia saying they saw me on the news winning a cruise.

"It feels like they got all the benefits and we got nothing but cancellation fees."

Sir Richard Branson being relayed to Virgin passengers from a Facetime call.

The couple had to change the flights they booked to meet the cruise, at a cost of around $150.

"We were genuinely shocked, we thought Virgin would provide us with an alternative prize like a flight credit … or they would allow us to rebook on a later season," Morgan said.

"They sort of gave up on us … like 'you're a bit of a problem now'.

"It just feels very corporate for a brand that tries not to be very corporate."

A marketing strategy that works

Virgin "relies on winners to become brand ambassadors by sharing their stories with friends, family and social media followers," Dr Balkrushna Potdar, lecturer in marketing at the University of Tasmania, said.

A man in a suit looks at the camera.

Dr Potdar said while Virgin benefitted from showcasing winners, it was essential the company honoured promises made during the promotion.

He said with the cancellation of Australian cruises, Virgin should provide a replacement prize or compensation — if that doesn't happen, the company risks damage to its brand and people may lose trust in Virgin and see their marketing practice as deceptive.

"The winner's negative experience may become a cautionary tale dissuading potential customers from engaging with the brand," Dr Potdar said.

He said Virgin should consider some form of damage control including a "heartfelt apology" and an offer of compensation.

"This could include covering the cost of flights to Europe or the Caribbean, offering a free cruise credit, providing additional perks and benefits," he said.

Virgin apologises but said safety must come first

In a statement, a Virgin Australia Group spokesperson said "we apologise to our winners who can no longer redeem their prize due to the cancellation of Virgin Voyages' Australian and New Zealand cruises amid the conflict in the Red Sea".

The spokesperson said safety was always its priority.

"We are grateful that Virgin Voyages have offered all impacted guests the opportunity to take complimentary cruises on its other international sailings, including in Europe and the Caribbean."

The value of the replacement cruise is $10,500.

Morgan has described Virgin's response as "tone deaf".

Nearly 140 migrants reach Greece after dangerous sea voyages. One man drowned

Greek authorities say nearly 140 migrants have reached Greek shores over the past 24 hours

ATHENS, Greece -- Nearly 140 migrants have reached Greek shores over the past 24 hours, making the dangerous sea voyage across the Mediterranean Sea, authorities said Friday. One man, who had set off from North Africa, drowned off the southern island of Crete.

Greece, along with Spain and Italy, is a key entry point for people from the Middle East or Africa who are seeking a better life in the European Union. To get to Greek shores, most make the risky crossing in flimsy boats from neighboring Turkey or Libya.

Greece's coast guard said 34 men and three boys were rescued on Thursday by a passing merchant vessel some 83 nautical miles (95 miles) south of Crete after issuing a distress signal.

A coast guard statement Friday said one more man who had been on the boat fell into the sea and drowned, according to other survivors and the ship's captain. All survivors were taken to Crete. They told authorities they had set off from eastern Libya on Tuesday.

Also Thursday, authorities found 51 men, eight women and 19 children on a beach near Monemvassia in southeastern mainland Greece . It was unclear where they had departed from, but the area is on a smuggling route from Turkey to Greece or Italy.

In separate incidents on Thursday and Friday, authorities picked up 22 people from an islet off the southeastern island of Symi. The coast guard said they had paid smugglers to ferry them over from nearby Turkey.

Nearly 16,000 people have reached Greece so far this year, mostly by sea. In 2023, arrivals exceeded 48,000.

Spain has received the highest number of migrants and refugees in the EU so far this year with more than 21,000 arrivals, according to United Nations data.

Great Lakes cruise passengers ‘in for a treat’ with 2 ships returning next summer

Travelers looking to visit the Great Lakes region by cruise are “in for a treat” with the return of two elegant ships next summer, officials said.

Victory Cruise Lines will launch Great Lakes voyages aboard the Victory I and Victory II during spring 2025.

Cruise the Great Lakes , a collaboration of the region’s states, provinces, and partner cruise businesses, is looking forward to their return.

“The Victory brand has always been associated with excellence, from the passenger experience to the elegant details, so future passengers are in for a treat,” said Anne Sayers, chair of Cruise the Great Lakes and secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Tourism.

The ships navigated the freshwater seas in 2023 under American Queen Voyages with the monikers Ocean Navigator and Ocean Voyager, accounting for about half of the nearly 100 calls to Mackinac Island and visiting several other ports. The company then filed for bankruptcy and sold the ships for $2 million to John Waggoner.

Waggoner had owned Victory Cruise Lines but sold his companies and retired. Now he’s relaunching the brand.

Plans for 2025 include 36 voyages of 10 to 12 days each. The ships will touch all five Great Lakes. Victory I will operate a 197-day season while Victory II’s will be 153 days. This could bring up to 7,000 passengers to the Great Lakes.

That would be a big boost to the 20,000 passengers expected to visit the Great Lakes region by cruise this year.

“We are excited to hear of John’s plans and cannot wait to see those beautiful Victory ships traversing the Great Lakes,” said Anna Tanski, tourism director for Cruise the Great Lakes. “John and his team always believed that the Great Lakes region was ideal for the intimate cruise ships, and he knows how much we have to offer.”

The ships were part of the record-breaking 2023 season .
