EXCELLENT experience! This is a must do!

The TasteVodka Tour is a must do in Krakow. James was an excellent guide as we learned, tasted, and visited our way around the bars in the Old Town area. This is informative, interesting, and fun way to experience vodka and try the best pierogies.

Our group of four agreed that this was one of our highlights of our 9 country adventure. I have completely changed the way I now drink vodka and am always looking for vodka made in Poland! (Lisa, Minnesota)

vodka tour krakow

What a brilliant evening, couldn’t recommend this more, we are a group of 5 friends, who were not all vodka drinkers…. this tour has changed that! Really nice tapas and a lovely host who was very friendly and interesting. Tasting all the different flavours really opened our eyes. Got to visit some Great bars we would never have found, and then our lovely host gave us some great recommendations for other bars to visit. Brilliant evening. Highly recommend (Lyndsay, Liverpool)

One of our highlights!

The vodka tour was absolutely fantastic. The guides were friendly, informative and good fun. We learned about the vodka, Polish tradition and history whilst sampling different types and flavours in some brilliant bars and shops.

The polish food was lovely, my personal favourite was the sweet pierogi at the end of the tour. Some of the group wanted to continue to a bar after the tour so Garion took us to a bar for some Karaoke!

The follow-up message with recommendations was greatly appreciated, my husband and I tried the vodka bars in the Jewish Quarter (Kazimierz) which were all lovely. I’d recommend doing this at the start of your trip to help find your way around the old town, and to get a taste and understanding of Polish Vodka.

Fun first night in Krakow with Angelika

We were two married couples traveling and none of us are really vodka drinkers, but as they say “When in Rome.” So we just went for it with this fun tour, and we’re so glad we did! We were incredibly jet lagged after flying in from the states that morning (and losing our luggage to boot), but this tour was the perfect pick-me-up, and Angelika was an amazing guide.

I still can’t believe how much was included in this tour considering the price. Every time I thought it was winding down, it seemed like we were having more shots or snacks put in front of us, which was a pleasant surprise:) We also lucked out with a fun group, but honestly, who isn’t fun after several samples of vodka? We were all basically best friends by the end.

Angelika said she had only been doing these tours for a month, but you would never have guessed it. She was extremely knowledgeable, but also really good at providing a fun, friendly atmosphere, and taught us a lot about the Polish vodka culture. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who is looking for a fun, educational night in Krakow while making new friends:) Thank you for such a wonderful experience, Angelika!

Frequently asked questions

How can i book.

Booking is easy, choose a tasting and then pick your ideal date using the booking calendar on the product page.

If you’re having any problems or you can’t find availability for your time in Kraków then just drop us an email or message us on the website chat function and we’ll be happy to help.

I'm not sure which tasting to book. Help!

The main difference between the Vodka Tour and our sit-in Polish Vodka Experience is that the Tour also includes a walking tour of the Old Town’s very best vodka bars and cafes, delicious Polish dumplings to soak up the spirits and  the opportunity to choose vodkas from hundreds of varieties.

Our Vodka Tour is hugely popular with small groups of friends, couples and solo travellers. Kraków’s vodka bars are so different to what you get back home. They’ve got such a crazy selection of varieties and each venue is completely different to the last so it’s a lot of fun exploring them.

Our sit-in Vodka Experience is really popular with larger groups. It’s great value, gives a fantastic intro to Polish vodka, and means bigger groups don’t have the confusion of changing venues.

Will I get drunk on a tasting? Is this another 'pub-crawl'

No, nicely tipsy is the best way to describe our tastings. They’re designed to be lots of fun and very sociable but they’re also about local cuisine, culture, traditions, folklore and funny stories. The vodka samples are paced across the experience. We always want our guests to walk away with a big smile on their faces but not too wobbly on their feet.

Some people are scared of the idea of trying Polish vodka but it is incredibly special and really different to what you would have tried back home. We always give some straight vodka samples so our guests can understand the unique quality and character involved in Polish vodka but you’ll have lots of incredible flavoured options (like salted caramel!) to choose from if you’d like something easier to drink. There are of course some stronger options available for the braver souls  😉

Can I book for a hen/stag-do or birthday party?

Yes! Stags and Hens just require a private booking and we’ll run your very own tasting separate from our standard sessions.

We’ve had so many fantastic groups of guys and girls join us and there is a ton of great reviews from stag and hen groups that you can find on our TripAdvisor page.

The kind of groups our tastings are most suited to are those looking to kick-start their Kraków trip with a cultural, fancy and fun drinking experience. To get a great introduction to the city and lots of great tips for the rest of the weekend.

Our tastings wouldn’t be suited to groups looking to hit a hundred jaeger bombs before 10am and be passed out by midday (which hey we have no problem with but it doesn’t mix well with spirit tastings!)  First of all, if the group arrives inebriated it would be illegal for the venues to serve them. Secondly, our guides are lovely and go out of their way to help our guests have the time of their lives in Kraków. It’s impossible for them to do that though if they are not being treated respectfully. Thirdly, there’s so much value in what the guides have to say and it’s wasted if no one is listening.

If you have any questions at all or would like to customise your tasting please feel free to drop us a message and we’ll be more than happy to get back to you!  🙂

Are the tastings suitable for solo travelers?

There couldn’t be anything better to do for a solo traveler than join us for some tasty food and vodka! We’ve designed our tastings to be as social as possible and vodka is made for sharing. Our tastings do have min booking numbers as we need a certain number of people on the tasting to break even. So long as other people are booked in on a tasting though it’s possible to make bookings for one person. If you are a solo traveller struggling to book then just drop us a message and we’ll be happy to help  🙂

Vodka Tasting in Krakow: Best Tasting Tours & Bars

A vodka tasting in Krakow is a must for anyone visiting the city. Vodka is Poland’s national drink and a cornerstone of the local food culture, so it’s definitely worth exploring the different types of Polish vodka and discovering the many stories, legends, and customs related to the local drinking culture. You’ll discover flavors and types that you’ll hardly find elsewhere , capable of winning over even those who usually don’t like vodka and markedly different from those you normally find in supermarkets or, worse, in the many tourist traps in town.

Many people automatically associate vodka with Russia , which is quite fair and understandable. But few know that vodka actually originated in Poland , not far from Krakow. Its history is quite complex and controversial, and Polish vodka maintains a flavor and character quite distinct from counterparts produced in other countries. One of the best ways to immerse yourself in local culture and learn more about vodka , its history, and traditional rituals, is to participate in one of the Krakow’s vodka tasting tours. But there are several in the city and not all are of good quality and offer experiences that are worth the expense.

For this reason, we have carefully prepared a selection of what we (and according to the experiences of hundreds of other travelers) believe are the best: only tested and reputable experiences , of quality and with excellent value for money , with expert guides capable of offering many cultural insights and a true tasting experience . But why participate in a vodka tasting in Krakow? Simply put, it’s the best place in the world to do so! According to many historians, vodka (or wódka , in Polish) originated in Poland at the beginning of the 1400s. A few years later, a similar recipe from Russian monks also appeared, which is why the paternity of the drink is disputed between the two countries.

The first vodka distilleries are believed to have sprung up around Sandomierz , not far from Krakow . Over the centuries, the classic recipe of traditional pure white vodka has been complemented by hundreds of flavored variations . Tinctures and liqueurs based on vodka, fruit, and herbs are still prepared in local homes today, and some of the best craft distilleries around Krakow produce top-quality vodka. So, it’s more than just a drink. It’s a true cultural fact and part of local folklore.

During a vodka tasting in Krakow, you can sample different types of authentic Polish vodka , traditionally distilled from grains or potatoes, often also accompanied by traditional snacks or other local food specialities. Poles love traditional white vodka, which is pure, clear, and strong. Among the most famous and prized, don’t miss the opportunity to taste J.A. Baczewski Vodka Monopolowa , one of the best and most authentic Polish vodkas, distilled purely from potatoes and subtly flavored with citrus fruits.

Taste Vodka Krakow Vodka Bar Tasting

But there are also many types of homemade and flavored vodkas . For example, you should try the traditional nalewki , something you will probably only find here: tinctures – and therefore not distillates – flavored and produced with a wide variety of local herbs, berries, and fruits, some of which are characteristic of the region. They are generally softer (usually under 30% alcohol) and very pleasant to taste , and they are much appreciated by those who don’t like the strong and burning flavor of classic vodka.

Navigating this vast selection, made up of several hundred flavors and types of vodka and tinctures , could be overwhelming. And this is one of the reasons why you should opt for a guided vodka tasting tour. Below, you’ll find our favorites!

If this sounds a bit intimidating, let me reassure you: the experience spans almost three hours , during which you will stroll through the alleys of the old town and visit various venues, including bars, cafés, and shops specializing in authentic traditional vodka. This makes the vodka tasting perfectly manageable for anyone , even those who aren’t accustomed to drinking and those who don’t typically enjoy vodka.

Vodka Tour Krakow

And if you’re feeling brave and want to try something stronger, just ask!

One of the aspects we truly appreciated is that each vodka tasting is accompanied by commentary from the guide . This allows you to learn a great deal about Polish vodka: each brand has a unique history, different production processes, and uses unique or rare ingredients. There are also stories and legends to share. Moreover, as per tradition, the tastings are complemented by delicious food . That’s right, it’s not just a vodka tasting. The tastings are paired with local snacks , such as crusty bread, smoked mountain cheese, local sausage, crunchy pickles, sweet and savory pierogies, and much more.

Those seeking a more intimate and exclusive experience might want to check out the Kraków Private Vodka Tasting Tour . This guided tasting tour offers a comprehensive overview of Kraków’s food and vodka scene. In this case, you will have an expert guide at your disposal, exclusively for you and your guests. You can choose from different languages such as English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, and of course, Polish. This tour also takes you through the best vodka bars in Krakow’s Old Town , where you’ll discover authentic Polish vodkas and the local drinking culture. You can choose from different types of experiences : the budget introductory tour lasts approximately 2 hours and includes 5 shots of vodka in 3 venues, while the standard tour lasts 3 hours and includes 7 shots of vodka in 4 venues, along with some snacks to accompany the drinks.

Alternatively, you could opt for the most comprehensive tour which lasts 4 hours and includes the tasting of 10 different types of vodka in 5 different venues, as well as a tasting of snacks and traditional local foods . In fact, this option combines a vodka tasting with a food tour, and the food is substantial enough to equate to a lunch or dinner.

What is the reason for attending a Krakow Vodka Tasting? Well, visiting Krakow and not tasting the renowned Polish vodkas is akin to traveling to Italy or France and not savoring a fine local wine. Vodka is the national drink of Poland! Following vodka, beer is the next popular choice: every Polish town boasts its own brewery, and both vodka and beers are still crafted today according to centuries-old recipes .

Vodka is a cornerstone of local culture ! It is a staple at convivial lunches and dinners among friends and relatives, and it plays a crucial role in special occasions and ceremonies. The most solemn moment of a ceremony is the vodka toast , which is typically preceded by an elaborate speech. Unsurprisingly, vodka is more than just a drink for the Poles, it’s a tradition. There are dozens of types of high-quality vodkas , ranging from the classic white vodkas to the more eclectic ones, flavored with complex aromatic bouquets, herbs, chocolate, hazelnuts, and citrus fruits.

Starting with the world-renowned Wyborowa , a classic white vodka distilled from pure rye, you will immerse yourself in a mysterious world of colorful shot glasses, alchemist’s ampoules, and timeless bars. For example, only here will you be able to discover what a nalewka is. These colored ampoules date back to the Middle Ages and contain precious infusions based on vodka and herbs or various essences . There are hundreds of colorful combinations of aromas, and they are still prepared today according to old family recipes.

Krakow Vodka Tasting Polish Vodka Culture

You can then taste some of the best herbal vodkas, such as Żołądkowa Gorzka , which is one of the most popular nalewki , or a Wódka Dzięgielówka , an infusion made from vodka and angelica. Also worth trying is Żubrówka Bison Grass Vodka , made with herbs that grow in the Białowieża Forest, hand-picked and dried in the wind and sun.

Then there is the famous J.A. Baczewski Vodka Monopolowa , one of the finest Polish vodkas. Its intriguing history dates back to the 18th century and until WWII, it was one of the finest spirits produced by the ancient factories of Lviv , which was once the capital of Galicia, and is now an important city in Ukraine. To learn more about its compelling history, you should join a vodka tasting tour in Krakow!

There is a plethora of excellent Polish vodkas to taste . A tasting tour in Krakow is a great way to delve into the world of vodka tasting, to learn the basics of this spirit, its rituals, and its importance to the local culture. The vodkas we just mentioned are just some of the most popular and loved by the locals , but there are hundreds of different types, flavors, and combinations, many of which are handcrafted in local distilleries in the region around Krakow.

So, you might discover many more and learn that vodka is not just clear and burning , but also very aromatic and not at all cloying like the flavored vodkas from the supermarket. Participating in a vodka tasting in Krakow allows you to dive in and gain many insights into the culture and traditions of Polish vodka production, and this makes it a truly recommended experience for those traveling in Poland!

What should you expect from a good Krakow Vodka Tasting Tour?

Well, first, you should expect to taste REAL Polish vodkas and not just any cool alcoholic drink. You are here to taste the best of traditional local products and honor Polish vodka with its compelling history and distinct culture.

So, you shouldn’t opt for just any cheap tour where you’ll merely get drunk on a few shots of vodka of dubious quality. If you just want to socialize and drink , you might consider one of the excellent Krakow Pub Crawls , which are even more cost-effective! A vodka tasting is certainly also a lot of fun and a great opportunity to socialize. But first and foremost, they are an opportunity for cultural enrichment , designed for tasting and not just for getting drunk.

The best vodka tasting tours are designed for a calm-paced experience , which always includes a pleasant walk and enough food to accompany the drinks. This makes vodka tastings ideal for anyone , regardless of whether they are couples, families, or even solo travelers.

Moreover, it’s a good way to familiarize yourself with the city and its attractions , given that the guides are locals and are more than happy to advise you on what to do and see, where to eat, and more. For this reason, many people opt for a vodka tour and perhaps also a Krakow Free Walking Tour in the first few days of their stay in Krakow, so as to get an overview of the city and firsthand advice from locals and other travelers.

Unless you are already an expert or a local, you should consider participating in a vodka tasting tour at least once. This will provide a guided introduction to the world of Polish vodka, which includes not only several varieties differing in production method, ingredients, aromas, tastes, alcohol content, and methods of consumption, but also a real drinking etiquette , an integral part of local culture and traditions.

Consider a vodka tasting in Krakow as an introductory overview that will give you the foundation to continue exploring the complex world of Polish vodkas independently. This will allow you to consciously choose what to drink , what to try, and how to distinguish quality vodka from the poor ones marketed purely for tourists.

Whether you want to continue your vodka tasting in Krakow by trying other authentic Polish vodkas, or you want to try your hand at a self-organized vodka tour , there are some great vodka bar addresses in Krakow worth checking out.

Vodka Tasting in Krakow

Among our favorites is the Wodka Bar (at Mikołajska, 5) , which, as the name suggests, is a popular gathering spot for vodka lovers, with a remarkable selection of about a hundred traditional, high-quality vodkas and good locally produced flavored vodkas. Locals, especially young people and students in the mood for a cheap booze, usually head to Pijalnia Wódki i Piwa , a chain of shot bars located at various points in the city (including one on Floriańska and one in Kazimierz ). Here you will find decent quality vodkas and drinks at affordable prices.

Other tested and appreciated addresses are Staropolskie Trunki (on Floriańska) and Ambasada Śledzia (at Stolarska, 8) . The latter, in addition to good vodkas and beers, also serves tasty snacks and specialties of Polish cuisine. For something different from the world-famous and strong clear vodkas, you might head to Nalefka (at Sławkowska, 23) , an intriguing bar located near the central Floriańska street, which boasts a wide selection of nalewki , which technically is not vodka and not even a distillate, but a medium-grade liqueur handcrafted in the region, available in dozens of different flavors.

If you are looking for a good place to buy quality local vodka and liquors, then you might want to take a look at Regionalne Alkohole (at Miodowa, 28) and Sklep Szambelan (at Bracka, 9) which have one of the widest selections in town. The latter is a really special place, boasting a wide selection of nalewki of different flavors preserved in traditional ampoules, and allows you to try the different flavors before buying them.

FAQs about Vodka Tastings in Krakow

Will i get drunk on a krakow vodka tasting tour.

It’s highly unlikely , at most you might become nicely tipsy. The best vodka tasting tours include at least 6-7 different shots of vodka , but also plenty of food and snacks.

They also last at least 2.5 hours and take place in a roaming manner among various venues scattered throughout the old town. So you will walk from one venue to another (usually no more than a 5-minute walk), all at a calm and relaxed pace. This will allow you to taste responsibly, without really getting drunk.

Is a Krakow Vodka Tasting Tour similar to a Pub Crawl?

It shouldn’t be . Even though we know that most of those marketed to tourists as vodka tours or vodka tastings are nothing more than a few shots of vodka in one of the many tourist bars in town, or something designed to get drunk and make friends, a real Krakow Vodka Tasting Tour should not be like that.

The best tasting tours (like those recommended here) are cultural experiences that allow you to deepen your knowledge of Polish vodka and local cuisine, culture, and traditions.

They are also very engaging and sociable , but the main focus here is on the quality of the vodka and the cultural experience , not on making new friends and partying in clubs. If you are more interested in that, then you should take a look at our guide to the best Krakow Pub Crawls , which are famous for being among the best in Europe and are definitely budget-friendly!

WHAT IS THE VODKA TOUR?

First of all,  this is NOT a pub crawl . We want to deliver an expert but also fun way of understanding Polish vodka culture.

Poland boasts of being one of the best manufacturers of vodka in the world. It is also a place which many imagine to be the country where people have a glass of vodka for breakfast, then one for lunch and another before going to bed. Is that all true? Are Polish vodkas really good? And does vodka have any flavour at all? How is it produced and can you make it at home? The tour will answer all the questions, including those you may be afraid to ask!

Vodka is a very social drink and this is why this tour is especially suitable for groups of friends, colleagues etc. The minimum number of people for the tour is 2 and the maximum is 8. If you prefer your tour to be private for your group only,  click here , we’ve got an offer for you, too!

HOW MUCH WILL I DRINK?

We will taste different kinds of vodka (at least 6) and typical vodka food (at least 5 tastings). A local experienced guide speaking fluent English will take you to 3 or 4 bars and restaurants in the city centre serving best and most intriguing Polish vodkas to tell you stories, anecdotes and answer million of questions (which we hope you will want to ask!).

Think of the amount of food served on the tour as lunch. As for the alcohol, given the food served and the duration of the tour, the tastings are supposed to make you feel tipsy, but not drunk.

What it's like to do a vodka tour in Krakow

Jaclyn DeGiorgio

October 2, 2020 // By Jaclyn DeGiorgio

By Jaclyn DeGiorgio October 2, 2020

"So, the family patriarch or event host makes a toast while everyone stands with their vodka shots in hand, waiting for him to finish," explains Mateusz Kołakowski, a tour guide for the Krakow arm of Eat Polska food and vodka tours.

He goes on to explain that all festivity attendees listen as the host rambles on, eager for him to proclaim the magic words, "Na zdrowie." The Polish equivalent of "Cheers!" gets the party started, indicating that it's time to imbibe. For each subsequent shot, there’s no need to listen to another speech – a simple "Na zdrowie" suffices.

We participants in Eat Polska’s vodka tour take that as our cue to get into the Polish spirit, declaring a "Na zdrowie" of our own, then clanking our glasses together to put back our first vodka of the evening, Wyborowa, a pure white rye vodka.

Vodka ready to taste

Yet not all vodka is meant to be swallowed in a single gulp. We're gathered around a table in the cozy, wood-paneled dining room of an old-school, traditional Polish restaurant near Krakow's main square, and gaze at our next elixir: Żołądkowa Gorzka, a pale gold, herbal-infused vodka.

We approach it like wine, sensing aromas of nutmeg and other spices that, for me, conjure up the feeling of Christmastime. Żołądkowa Gorzka is meant to be sipped and savored slowly, and as we nurse ours, we fuel up on zakąski, traditional Polish snack-sized dishes, consisting of herring with sour cream and onions as well as white sausage in horseradish sauce.

White sausage and horseradish sauce

While we eat, Mateusz explains how vodka is Poland's national drink – you dare not refuse anyone who offers you a glass in their home, unless, of course, you’re driving, pregnant or sober. In fact, pleading teetotaler isn’t considered a valid enough excuse.

The national drink of Poland holds the same title in Russia as the countries' histories overlap, rendering vodka’s point of origin a perpetual topic of debate. Though a case can be made in Poland’s favor, no one knows for sure exactly where it originated.

Various nalewki on display

The next stop brings us to an eclectic shop that could easily pass for the potions lab at Hogwarts, with backlit glass orbs containing nalewki (infused vodka) in myriad jewel tones. Ranging from elderberry flower to rose to raspberry to amaretto to an orange and coffee combo, I never imagined vodka could have so many colorful, flavorful iterations.

Similar to the bitter liqueurs in my adopted country of Italy, nalewki, which became popular in the 16th century, originally had medicinal purposes and served as a panacea for various ailments and afflictions. They eventually went mainstream and by the 20th century, nearly every household kept a homemade batch on hand to serve guests.

Mateusz patiently leads us through a nalewki blind-tasting, prompting us to guess the flavors of two – which I won’t spoil here for any potential future vodka tour participants.

Mystery nalewki

Our third destination is a lively convivial tavern with German beer hall vibes specializing in Lemkos cuisine, food typical of Nomadic people from a region close to the Ukrainian border. Here, we sample J.A. Baczewski, a Polish/Austrian potato vodka with a fascinating backstory.

After having been produced in Krakow for centuries, the distillery was leveled during World War II. An Austrian company eventually acquired the brand, which moved the vodka’s principal place of business to Vienna.

We also sip dzięgielówka (garden angelica or wild celery vodka). Angelica grows mainly in the Carpathian Mountains, and over the centuries, angelica-infused vodka was used as a cure for digestive problems. The 19th-century Polish poet Władysław Syrokomla mentions the vodka being used for this purpose in "Do Kalafonii," one of his poems.

To keep ourselves sated, we top brown bread with a punchy lardo crackling spread and dig into bigos, or hunters' stew, a hearty, comforting hodgepodge of mushrooms, beef and fermented sauerkraut.

Bigos, or hunter's stew

Our last stop is a chic speakeasy, located on the second floor of a nondescript building near Krakow’s historic center. Here, Mateusz introduces us to the most intriguing vodka of the evening, Żubrówka, or bison grass vodka. We formally taste the vodka first, and this (unsurprisingly) earthy potion emits traces of vanilla, almond and cinnamon. Each bottle is packaged with a glass blade plucked from Poland’s Białowieża Forest.

In the U.S., the vodka is sold sans grass blade as it contains coumarin, a chemical that thins the blood, therefore bison grass vodka in its purest form is prohibited stateside. We proclaim our final "Na Zdrowie" and clink our bison grass vodka-based cocktails as Mateusz presents us with official Vodka Inspector certificates.

Overall, the tour offered an atypical lens for a memorable glimpse of Poland's culture and history. The most gratifying part? Learning to drink vodka, Polish-style. Locals obviously have more experience, as well as a higher tolerance – yet the food pairings and quality of the vodka count for something. I put back more vodka on this tour then I have in the last ten years, and I didn’t even feel a tad bit tipsy.
