We'd like to visit the Zoo and see some of San Diego by foot. How far is the Zoo from the Port? The only directions I can find on the Web are for driving, and we'd prefer not to walk on highways.:p Can someone help us?

This is quite an uphill hike and the walk there is not incredibly scenic except for the last part across the park. The zoo entrance is on top of a mesa, and the zoo itself covers a couple of canyons, so just walking the zoo provides a lot of exercise. I would recommend taking a cab from the port to the zoo, or at least to 6th and Laurel. Cab fare is probably less than the zoo admission.

If you really want them, here are the walking directions (check this out on maps.google.com in hybrid mode to get an idea of what you're getting into):

Coming off the B St. Pier, turn right on Harbor drive. Left on Broadway. Left on Sixth Ave. Right on El Prado (aka Laurel St). Walk across the Prado past the museums. The road curves to the left towards Spanish Village. Walk through the artisans village to find yourself in a parking lot with the mini-railroad straight ahead. You'll see a path on your left which will lead you to the zoo's entrance which is on the far side of the railroad.

Thank you very much! We'll take a cab.:D

If you don't want to take a cab, you can get there pretty easily on a city bus too. There are several buses that go by the cruise ship pier and then go up Park Blvd. from downtown to the zoo.

Walking would take you at least an hour...it is about 3 miles, all uphill going to the zoo. Once you get to the zoo, you will have more than enough walking...it is huge. Try to see some of the other areas in Balboa Park too (museums, gardens, etc.) while you are in the area.

The Zoo is 4 to 5 miles away. With your short time is port do you want to be walking that far? The bus service from Downtown San Diego is good. You can take a Number 7 bus to the Zoo. Bus Trip Planning will show the bus schedules. There's an information booth just across the street from the cruise ship terminal, just across the street from that is where I think you can catch the number 7 bus. The bus is $1 per person if your 60 or older. $2.25 if your younger. A taxi ride should be $10 to $15. The Zoo is BIG. Plan on spending sometime there.

Cruise More Often - how did you buy the zoo tickets online? That's a great idea. We're not going until next fall, but I'm trying to do some of the research now.

www.sandiego.com is a good website resource for the San Diego area.

http://hotels.sandiego.com/151_attraction-info_a7.html If you will be in San Diego for more than just the day and plan on doing anything in addition to the Zoo, I've found this to be a good value. By going to the Zoo and using at least one of the other coupons, the Passport more than pays for itself. Last time I was in San Diego, we used it for the zoo, the Hornblower cruises, and a couple of the other coupons.

http://www.sandiego.org/familyfun/ has links for purchasing tickets to the Zoo, Sea World, Wild Animal Park, and Legoland.

http://hotels.sandiego.com/151_ticket-list_san-diego.html provides more links to tickets to area attractions including the Zoo. Offers options of purchasing multiple tickets together.

If you do buy individual tickets to the zoo, make sure to buy a ticket that includes the bus tour and the aerial tram, I think it is called a Best Value ticket. Both are worth it, at least for first time visitors to the zoo. I no longer do the bus tour when I visit, but I'm lucky to have my brother as a personal tour guide - he goes at least weekly to the zoo.

One more thing, as another poster said, the Zoo is big, reserve several hours to see the zoo. My brother and I can do the entire zoo in under 2 hours, but we set a brisk pace and he knows the zoo well. I recommend getting there early to give you more time to see everything. Also, if the panda exhibit is open, go there early, as it is very popular and gets crowded quickly. I've found it best in the past to do the guided bus tour first (it's near the entrance), then you'll know what you want to go back and see more of.

Cartagena Port Oasis: See the Wildlife When You Cruise to Colombia

Toucan at the Port of Cartagena Columbia

Toucans, iguanas, howler monkeys, and other regional animals greeted us at the Cartagena port oasis. This was an unexpected yet wonderful surprise as we disembarked a cruise ship in Cartagena. This award-winning sustainable port oasis is part of a 1,000-square-metre garden, sharing samples of Colombia’s flora and fauna.

A government initiative, the Cartagena port oasis encourages arriving passengers to discover a variety of the country’s natural resources. It reminds us of Colombia’s desire for a sustainable environment while at the same time protecting certain animal species. Not “wild” animals per se, yet many appear to be free to come and go.

There is an impressive collection of animal species at the port oasis, especially once you realize that entry is free.

The Cartagena port oasis initiative won the Organization of American States (OAS) First America’s Maritime Award  in the category of  Sustainable Tourist Destination Port .

Birds at the Cartagena port oasis

The birds are in multiple areas, some enclosed while others are open, allowing the birds to come and go as they please. Nesting boxes offer food, encouraging their continual return.

Tips for your time at the Cartagena cruise port oasis

While our goal was to get out and discover the city, we saved time at the end of our day for exploring this Cartagena zoo. Bypassing it when we first arrived gave us two advantages. First, it wasn’t crowded when went. Secondly, by coming back early to see the port oasis, we were less stressed about being sure we were back to port before the ship sailed.

Here is more to know:

  • Cartagena port oasis, the sustainable zoo, is free to enter and located on the Cartagena cruise port grounds.
  • Aside from flora and fauna, there is also a replica emerald mine at the port oasis. We found it a bit too dark for photos, but interesting. Here, we found precious stones and other artifacts.
  • A few stores and booths offer a final chance for some Cartagena shopping and souvenir opportunities.
  • The cafe was our chance to get one more Colombian coffee before our ship sailed out of Cartagena.

For us, Cartagena was our last stop before crossing the Panama Canal  with Princess Cruise .

Some of the animals at the Cartagena port oasis

Again, most of the animals are free yet choose to stay in their port oasis. In addition to the animals photographed here, there are deer. Sadly, we somehow didn’t see them.

Check out this video from the Grupo Puerto de Cartagena (the Cartagena Port Group) to see a few more of the animals:

More animal opportunities in Cartagena Colombia

While there are no other zoos in Cartegena, there are two other interesting options to see the animals.

Aviario Nacional Baru Cartagena (National Aviary of Colombia)

Colombia has some of the greatest bird diversity in the world, and there is no better place to discover it than the National Aviary. About an hour’s drive from Cartagena, it is home to over 2,000 birds representing 190 bird species. In an effort to support sustainable and responsible care, the birds live in 21 natural environments.

You will discover birds from Colombia as well as other Latin American countries. The diversity of species live in environments including tropical rainforest, coastal, and desert. You’ll want to allocate about 2.5 hours to see the park, and if you can time it right, enjoy a presentation at 11.30 am or 3.30 pm daily.

The Oceanarium is the place to go if you want to learn more about the marine life of the Colombian Caribbean Sea. It is located on Rosario Island (Islas del Rosario), and will require a boat trip from La Bodeguita Pier. The pier is a 15-minute drive from the Cartagena port. There are several boat tours to pick from, each with different options and pick-up points. Pick your own boat tour to Rosario Island here .

Tips for leaving the Cartagena port

Cartagena is one of my all-time favourite cruise ports . There is plenty to do in this town outside of the port. In fact, we hired a driver for the day at the port and toured the city before exploring the port. If you’re going to do the same, here are a few quick tips:

  • There are two areas to hire a driver. One inside the port gates, the other outside. Only official guides can recruit tourists on the port grounds. You will pay more than will if you go outside and hire someone, but you take less risk this way.
  • Although the official guides claim fixed prices, we were able to negotiate.
  • While we needed an English-speaking guide, our ability to speak some Spanish helped in the negotiation. However, if everyone in your group doesn’t speak Spanish, you will need to be sure your guide speaks English that you can understand.
  • Once outside of the port gates, the petty crime rate might be higher than what you are used to at home. Our best advice is to be vigilant and not flaunt your wealth. Also, be sure to check out our best South America safety tips .
  • Before we negotiated with a driver at the port, we had a list of what we wanted to see in Cartagena .
  • Had we not felt comfortable negotiating, we would have taken this City Tour of Cartagena for Cruises from Viator.
  • For the complete do-it-yourself option, you can take a taxi cab to the Cartagena old city. It should cost about $20 USD.

We’ve yet to travel to Colombia and I’ve been pouring over posts and documentaries trying to plan our trip there of late. I hadn’t heard about Cartagena Port Oasis though until I read your post and it sounds like an amazing experience for kids and adults alike. I really appreciate the fact that the animals at this oasis are free and choose to stay here – sounds like the place to go to in order to see the flora and fauna in a sustainable environment.

Such a treat to see all of these unique animals in such a cool city! I am dying to go to Cartegena

How cool to see all of this wildlife up close and personal!

April 30, 2020 at 6:46 pm

The wildlife is so beautiful! I’d love to see the keel-billed toucan once in my life! Definitely a place I need to visit, thanks so much for sharing!

April 30, 2020 at 5:33 pm

I love places like this! Especially when the animals seem free to come and go. It’s a great way for visitors to see the wildlife without disturbing their actual habitat and even better if you’re on a time budget! Good to know that the prices can be bartered too!

We were there this month (Feb 2019). I spent so much time in the zoo area as it was very enjoyable I did not see the monkeys though. While walking through the aviary I had a toucan nipping at my toes as I was wearing open toe sandals. A great story to tell when I got back.

January 31, 2019 at 4:05 am

How awesome that you got to see all these in the “wild.” And got such great photos to remember them with! My husband spent a few years in Panama and always tells me how much I would love all the wildlife. Not much of that where we live now. Hope the rest of the cruise was great too!

January 30, 2019 at 7:44 am

All of these are great shots, but WOW! That macaw is stunning!

January 29, 2019 at 9:16 pm

These shots are delightful!

Cartagena has been our our list for so long now. I wish we could do a more extensive trip across South America, like you guys did. You took your time and explored the entire region in detail, while we only rushed through it in 3 weeks. Your pictures are awesome, Rhonda. I fell in love with the toucans last time I was at Iguazú.

May 29, 2016 at 2:44 pm

I really liked that area with all the animals! We stopped there during our Panama Canal cruise with Celebrity last October. However, the small deer in the “zoo” were rubbing up against people and I found two little ticks on myself later! Made for a good story, haha. Loved getting the close-up photos of the wildlife, though!

May 21, 2016 at 11:50 am

Those toucans are just beautiful. I never realised they came in different colors. This is probably because my only experience with toucans is Toucan Sam from the old Fruit Loops breakfast cereal commercials. That was one cute animated bird! LOL!

WEATHER ALERT

5 warnings and 3 advisories in effect for 18 regions in the area

Dozens of united airlines passengers headed to houston fall ill after international cruise, “thirty minutes before we land, we get told that they’ve been exposed to an unknown virus.”.

Gage Goulding , News Reporter , Houston, TX

Michael Lemons , Photojournalist

Ahmed Humble , Digital Content Producer

HOUSTON – More than two dozen people on a United Airlines flight to Houston on Friday became ill while the plane was traveling from Canada.

RELATED: United Airlines says it has regained some privileges that were suspended after problem flights

United Airlines flight 1528 was flying from Vancouver, British Columbia to Houston. During the flight, 25 people became sick.

According to the Houston Fire Department , the sick passengers reported symptoms of nausea.

“About an hour and a half before we hit Houston, they ask for if you’ve been on this cruise ship, could you raise your hand,” James Snell recounts from his flight.

All of the ill passengers were previously on a cruise. A total of 75 passengers flying on the plane were on that cruise.

🤒 More than two dozen passengers aboard a @united flight to @iah on Friday became sick. @HoustonFire says the passengers just got done with an international cruise. @KPRC2 is also learning that the @CDCgov is also involved in the investigation. pic.twitter.com/y9Bdmx2Nbr — Gage Goulding - KPRC 2 (@GageGoulding) June 1, 2024

Firefighters and paramedics met the passengers as they landed at George Bush Intercontinental Airport following the five-hour flight from Vancouver, British Columbia.

“Then all of a sudden, the flight attendant, she put on a mask, and the guy next to me is like, ‘What do you think’s going on?’ And I’m like, ‘Bro, I don’t know. You know? I mean, COVID, we’re all going to die.’ You know what I mean,” said Snell.

Three people were “evacuated” from the airplane, but no one was taken to the hospital.

MORE STORIES INVOLVING UNITED AIRLINES

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) the plane landed around 6:30 p.m.

“Then firetrucks and ambulances started pulling up,” Snell said. “They didn’t hold us very long, maybe 45 minutes-ish.”

Passengers aboard the airplane say that the pilot and flight attendants alerted them that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating the illness.

“This is where it got weird,” Snell said. “He [the pilot] got over the speaker, but he came out to us and he said, ‘Hey, in my 25 years of flying, I’ve never seen anything like this. We have been quarantined by the CDC. Nobody can exit the plane until the CDC lets us off.’”

After being let off the plane passengers were screened by paramedics from the Houston Fire Department.

“As soon as you got off, you got mobbed, wanting to know if you had any symptoms and did you want to be triaged,” Snell said. “But then they let us off and I thought, man, you’re letting us off in Houston airport. Like we’re going everywhere in the world. This is how it started the last time.”

The last time refers to the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s what he and other passengers thought they could be dealing with.

“We’re all trapped in this tube, and we’ve all lived through Corona. And I was just like, ‘oh, come on. Not again,’” Snell said.

KPRC2 asked the FAA, CDC, Houston Fire Department and United Airlines for information about which cruise ship the passengers who got sick were on and for the illness, but none of the organizations would provide further information.

According to information from the CDC, there have been seven outbreaks of illness on cruise ships this year.

The most recent is a norovirus outbreak on the Celebrity Summit cruise ship.

Norovirus is commonly known as the “stomach bug” and can lead to nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. It’s a highly contagious virus, but is typically not a severe illness and passes in a few days, the CDC reports.

According to Celebrity Cruises’ website , the Celebrity Summit ship is currently sailing between Seward, Alaska and Vancouver, British Columbia.

Vancouver is where the United Airlines flight full of sick passengers took off.

KPRC 2 asked Celebrity Cruises for more information about their outbreak and if it’s connected to the sick passengers that landed in Houston. We’re still waiting for an answer.

Meanwhile, United Airlines tells KPRC 2′s Gage Goulding that the plane is being pulled from rotation until it can be deep cleaned.

UNITED AIRLINES STATEMENT

“Several passengers who had been on the same cruise and did not feel well were on United Flight 1528 from Vancouver to Houston tonight. United Airlines is actively coordinating with health authorities to address the situation. As a precautionary measure, the aircraft will be removed from service and go through a deep cleaning before returning to service. Ensuring the health and safety of our passengers and crew remains our top priority.”

CDC Statement

“CDC is aware of a flight from Vancouver, British Columbia, that arrived at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport on Friday, May 31.

Public health officers from CDC’s Houston Port Health Station worked with EMS to evaluate ill passengers on board. Most of the ill passengers reported mild GI symptoms. No passengers were noted to have a fever during the flight or upon public health assessment at landing. No passengers met CDC criteria for further public health follow-up. Passengers from the flight continued with their travel plans.”

Cruise ships set sail out of Port of Baltimore for the 1st time since bridge collapse

CNNWire logo

BALTIMORE -- Two cruise ships set sail for the sea from Baltimore this weekend for the first time since the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed.

Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Sea left Baltimore on Saturday for a five-night voyage to Bermuda, according to Port of Baltimore Director Jonathan Daniels.

"Cruising is back at the Port of Baltimore," Daniels said in a video posted on X from the Port of Baltimore account.

Carnival Cruise's Pride followed suit on Sunday when the ship headed off for a 14-day voyage to Greenland and Canada.

"Just a week ago, this terminal was being used as an incident command post. In one week, it's been transformed back to starting out that guest experience," Daniels announced in the video, as tropical cruise music played in the background, "The Port of Baltimore is back, cruising is back. It's absolutely great to be able to welcome everybody here."

In a news release posted on the state's website Tuesday, the Port of Baltimore administration had said, "The Port of Baltimore's permanent 700-foot wide, 50-foot-deep channel is expected to be reopened by the end of May."

The Port of Baltimore was temporarily blocked following the March 26 collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The 1.6-mile structure fell after the 213-million-pound cargo ship Dali collided with the bridge and struck one of its crucial support columns.

In 2023, 444,000 passengers departed on cruises from the Port of Baltimore. The Port supports 15,330 direct jobs and 139,180 jobs in Maryland, according to the state's website. The cruise industry adds $63 million to Maryland's economy, the website notes.

Another option -- walk a little bit away from the Village and hire your own taxi. Taxis do not have meters, and fares to the zoo are negotiable. My guess would be about BZ$100 to $150 if you want the taxi to wait for the hour or two that you are at the zoo. My guess is probably on the high side.

Cheapest option -- walk or take a taxi (BZ$6) to the bus terminal and get a bus (about BZ$4 per person each way). Here are more details about the bus option...

In the Belize City bus terminal, look for a westbound Regular (not Express) bus; the final destination of BENQUE will be displayed in the front window of the bus, but you could take one with a final destination of BELMOPAN. Buses depart hourly and sometimes half hourly. Just board the bus, and put luggage in the overhead racks or at the back of the bus. Always keep an eye on your luggage because passengers often use the rear emergency door as an entrance or exit. I like to keep my luggage within arms reach if possible. Let the driver and/or the conductor know where you want to stop. The conductor will collect the fare after the bus gets going. The zoo is at Mile 29 (BZ$3.00 or $4.00), and you can watch the white mile marker posts to see how close you’re getting. Should be about 45 minutes.

After visiting the zoo, walk back to the highway and wait for a bus back to the City. When you see a bus coming, wave your arm up and down to get it to stop. Express buses won’t stop. The bus will return to the bus terminal where there are taxis waiting outside the terminal.

Enjoy the zoo!

' class=

Can you explain more about the van cabs? Cost? Number of pax? Do you find them outside beyond the main throng, or elsewhere?

There are some taxis that are vans with capacity of about 9 passengers. Not as common, but there is usually 1 outside the water taxi terminal, and most probably outside the tourist village.

after seeing the zoo i would not reccommend it!!!deffinately not worth the long drive !!! cave tubing or the beach would probably be much better

zoo on cruise ship

Personally I love the zoo although it is definitely best seen at night. It is not a big spectacular zoo, but a small intimate place with only indiginous

Belizean animals. You will find the guides full of information and you'll see some beautiful animals up close. If you are looking for elephants and lions, we don't have them here! We do however have jaguar, ocelots, red puma, margets, harpy eagles, macaws, jaribu storks, gibnut, tapirs, crocodiles, snakes and all kinds of things which you might not see in other zoos.
