1. Amerling fountain, Brsalje square
Fort Lovrijenac is situated on a cliff top and there are some stairs to be taken to the top, but once youâre there, it is worth the walk. In the gallery you may see some photos of the view from Lovrijenac castle. The walk to the top is not hasty and you will most definitely not be rushed by the tour guide. At the entrance we cover the ticket expense. Below Lovrijenac there is Pile Bay which was Blackwater Bay Battle location with many exciting scenes.
3. Old Town
Walking through the old town we will show you all filming locations starting from Pile Gate with the highlight â Walk of Shame. Youâll discover Dubrovnik was used for another big filming just recently.
4. Lokrum Island Botanical Gardens
We get to Lokrum by ferry, it takes about 15 minutes in one direction by boat. Amazing, lush, supreme Lokrum island which was serving as City of Qarth in Game of Thrones. For every GOT fan the absolute highlight is hidden on that little island â the Iron Throne, where you will make unforgettable pictures as The Ruler of The 7 Kingdoms.

Game of Thrones filming location Island of Lokrum
The Game of Thrones production team used the island of Lokrum as a stand-in for the city of Qarth near the Jade Sea, which is visited by Daenerys Targaryen in season two. Some of the garden scenes were filmed in the botanical gardens on Lokrum and in the Former Benedictine monastery.
Island of Lokrum
Lokrum island covers 72 hectares and is located on the eastern Croatian coast, near the city of Dubrovnik. About 15 minutes is needed to get there by taxi-boat which runs from the old city harbour.
At the island's highest point at 96 metres (315 feet) above sea level stands Fort Royal Castle, which was built by the French in 1806. The climb to the fort is quite steep, but once there the views of Dubrovnik and the coastline are quite spectacular.
Lokrum's special attraction, a small lake called Mrtvo More (Dead Sea), is a unique lake linked with the sea. Crystal clear and calm, it is suitable for bathing and is a favourite resort for many visitors. Nearby there is a former Benedictine monastery which was founded in 1023. It was written in history that monks used their site on the island to warn residents of Dubrovnik when attackers were approaching from the sea. The monastery was abandoned in 1798. The Austrian archduke Maximillian Ferdinand built a luxurious residence on the island in 1859, on the ruins of the old Benedictine monastery.
Today Lokrum is a Nature Reserve and a Special Forest Vegetation Reserve and is inhabited by families of peacocks that were introduced to the island in the 19th century by the Austrian archduke Maximilian.
Don't miss the opportunity to visit the most memorable Game of Thrones filming locations during your stay in Dubrovnik.

Benedictine monastery
Used as a garden party scene in Qarth.
Filming locations for Qarth garden scenes when Daenerys and her entourage attended a garden party hosted by Xaro Xhoan Daxos are filmed in the Lokrum island botanical gardens and the former Benedictine monastery. At a garden party Daenerys witnesses the tricks of warlock Pyat Pree, who invites her to visit his order at the House of the Undying.
The island is inhabited by many of wild peacocks, which were inspiration for the directors of Game of Thrones to include them as decorations of Qarth (golden peacock sculptures).

Where is Lokrum Island?
Lokrum island is due south of Dubrovnik Old Town Port. If you hike the walls of the old city, you’ll see the forests of Lokrum just out to sea. The whole island is a nature reserve, just a 15-minute boat ride from Dubrovnik.
It is officially called the Lokrum Island Special Reserve of Forest Vegetation and has been preserved since 1948. The reserve protects sea caves, reefs, evergreen forests, pine forests, and more.
Is Lokrum Island Worth Visiting?
Yes, Lokrum Island is worth visiting, in fact, it’s one of our top things to do in Dubrovnik . We debated whether to make the trip and are glad we did. The cool pine forests were a welcome change of pace from the crowded streets of Dubrovnik. The kids loved seeing wild peacocks and splashing in the tidepools.
A Note About Croatia: In January of 2023, Croatia officially joined the Schengen Region of the European Union. At the same time, they stopped using the Croatian Kuna, and officially adopted the Euro.
If you are traveling on a 90-day Schengen Visa , your time in Croatia now counts as part of those days. Croatia is no longer a useful country for jumping out of the EU while doing the “Schengen Shuffle”!
How to Get to Lokrum Island
There are two ways to get to Lokrum Island- by ferry (the easy way!) and by kayak (the adventurous way!)
Take the Ferry
The first ferry leaves for Lokrum Island from the Old Port of Dubrovnik (East side of the Old Town) at 9 am. If you miss this ferry, the next one is at 10 am. After this in high season, the ferries continually leave every half hour. Check updated ferry schedules , in low season, the ferries run every hour.
The ferry ride to Lokrum Island lasts about fifteen minutes. You’ll sail through water so clear and beautiful you’ll just want to stare down into it.
Return ferries leave each hour at the 15 and the 45 past in high season, with the last boat leaving at 8 pm . In low season, ferries return every fifteen minutes after the hour, with the last boat leaving Lokrum Island at 4:00 pm. You cannot stay on the island but must return on the ferry.
Buy ferry tickets from the ticket booth marked “Lokrum Ferry” to your left as you enter the port from the Old Town. The booth opens at 8:30 am.
Round-trip tickets for adults in 2024 are 27âŹ. Children 5 to 15 are 5⏠and kids under 5 are free.
You should consider getting a Dubrovnik Pass for your visit- the ferry to Lokrum Island is not included, but the 3-Day and 7-Day passes do include a discount on these ferry tickets.
Kayak to Lokrum Island
Instead of taking the ferry, you can kayak to Lokrum Island! Keep in mind that while some tours advertises “swimming at Lokrum” you don’t really get to explore the island. This is a great way to see the island from the water, and hear stories about it from your guide.
This kayaking tour gets you out on the water between Dubrovnik and Lokrum, You’ll kayak out from Dubrovnik with views back to the city, then kayak to Lokrum island, with stops for snorkeling or swimming.
This is quite a workout, so be ready to paddle hard! Suitable for all abilities, these are double kayaks, so great for families. All equipment for kayaking and snorkeling is included as well as a bottle of water and a small snack.

8 Things to Do on Lokrum Island
Once you arrive at Lokrum Island, there will be a large map you can use to see the different areas of the island. We recommend taking a photo of the map so you can reference it as you hike around the island. This map of Lokum Island is great for reference.
1. Visit the Monastery
One of the first places you can visit on Lokrum Island is the Benedictine Monastery. Just a 3-minute walk from the port across the island will bring you to the Monastery Complex.
First constructed around 915 CE, the monastery existed until some point in the 17th century when the monks were forced to leave the island. It is believed by the locals that upon being evicted, the monks put a curse on anyone who possessed the island.
A portion of the monastery has been converted into a restaurant and another part has been turned into a museum. You’ll find the Iron Throne from Game of Thrones in the Benedictine Monastery.
2. Sit on the real GoT Iron Throne
Dubrovnik was a major filming location for Game of Thrones , the popular tv series from HBO. Within the Benedictine Monastery, you will find an exhibit that shows the many filming locations, as well as the actual Iron Throne that was used in the filming of the series. HBO gifted the set piece to the city of Dubrovnik, who installed it on Lokrum island.
As you enter the courtyard of the monastery, head to your left to the inside rooms where you’ll find the Game of Thrones display. You can sit on the throne and take pictures. This can become quite crowded in the afternoons, so if this is of interest, plan to get there early.
3. Take a Game of Thrones Tour
If you are a fan of the HBO series Game of Thrones, Dubrovnik and Lokrum are great places to take a tour of many of the filming locations.
On the Total Game of Thrones Experience , you’ll spend a full day not only seeing the filming sites in Old Town Dubrovnik, but you’ll also take the ferry to Lokrum Island, as well as a bus to Trsteno Arboretum, and Srdj Mountain.
What travelers have to say:
“This is a must do for all GoT fans! Itâs like being in the show. Whatâs real and whatâs CGI is really hard to tell on the show. Ana is a great and very detailed guide! I love how she describes the scene and makes us excited about GoT all over again!”
“Our tour guide, Ana, was fantastic! She was incredibly informative, not just on Game of Thrones, but Dubrovnik history in general. We were shown many various locations used for GoT filming and were given anecdotes from the filming, actors, extras etc. It was wonderful to go to the Arboretum as this is somewhat out of the city and we probably wouldnât have visited it otherwise.”

This tour is on our list of the best Game of Thrones tours in Dubrovnik – check out other options from walking tours to escape games!
4. Swim in the Lokrum Dead Sea
Mrtvo more, commonly called the Dead Sea , is a small saltwater lake on the southwestern side of Lokrum Island. It is fed by small caves and openings from the sea; the water is saltier than the ocean and it’s easy to float, but not nearly as much as the actual Dead Sea.
The sun warms the water and it is quite pleasant to take a dip. There is not a lot of beach area here, and it can become crowded in the afternoons as more people arrive on the island. The best time to explore is in the morning when it’s warm, but the area is still quiet.
There are sea anemones in the Dead Sea , so swim with caution. There are Snakelocks anemones, girdle anemones, and Beadlet anemones. These anemones look like plants, but they sting. Once our kids saw the sign detailing the anemones they were no longer interested in swimming there!
5. Take a Dip Near Stigene Rocks
The Stigene Rocks are on the west side of the bottom of the island and are great for exploring and climbing over. Just north of these, beyond the gardens next to the monastery, you will find a wall with access on either side down to a beach. This is a great place to take a dip and relax.
You can make your way through the rocks out to more open water, or enjoy this relatively protected cove. The water is so clear and our girls loved looking for rocks and shells of different colors and stripes.
Travel Tip: The beaches here are quite rocky, we recommend water shoes for swimming.
6. Check Out the Wildlife
Getting to Lokrum Island early is also great for seeing the wildlife. Peacocks freely roam the island, first brought to the Island by Maximilian (brother to Franz Joseph, Hapsburg Emperor) from the Canary Islands. As we walked across the island from the ferry, we found a peahen and her three babies out feeding in the underbrush. We found many others throughout the day.
At some point after 2014, European rabbits were illegally introduced to the island. While people love seeing them, they have wreaked havoc on the island and the Botanical Garden and destroyed some 200 plant species there. There was a plague that severely affected the rabbit population. I am not sure what the current situation is but when we were there, we did not see any rabbits.
7. Visit the Botanical Garden
Just north of the monastery is the Botanical Garden, founded in 1959 to research the adaptation of exotic plants in the Lokrum climate. It was heavily damaged during the Croatia War for Independence between 1991 and 1995 and more recently by the illegal introduction of the highly invasive European Rabbit. However, you can still find some 800 species of flora.
There are picnic benches just across from the botanical garden, many of which are in the shade. This is a great spot to stop for lunch if you are exploring the island.
8. Hike to Fort Royal
Fort Royal is at the highest point on the north of Lokrum Island. The fort’s construction was begun in 1806 when it was occupied by the French under Napoleon and completed in 1835 by Austria.
To get to the Fort, you’ll hike across the island, past some water cisterns, and uphill. You’ll quickly lose any crowds, and find the ruins of the round fort with several levels you can explore. It is not a large structure, you can check it out in just a few minutes.
From the top, you will find picturesque views of the surrounding island and sea, as well as Dubrovnik beyond. This is a great place to stop and take in the landscape.
The Legends of Lokrum Island
A monastery has existed on Lokrum Island since at least 915 CE. Legend holds that after the monks were forced off the island by the Romans, they cursed the island.
Richard the Lionheart was reportedly shipwrecked in 1192 on his way back from the Crusades. He washed ashore safely on Lokrum Island and vowed to build a church on the spot where he was saved.
He was later convinced to build the church in Dubrovnik, rather than on Lokrum Island.
The Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I (and thus King of Croatia and Hungary) later owned the island. Franz’s brother Maximillian took a great interest in the island and was responsible for much of the building upon it. A series of unfortunate deaths in the family reinforced the legendary status of Lokrum Island.

How Long Should I Spend on Lokrum Island?
You can easily spend a whole day or a half day on Lokrum Island . We took the first ferry over and returned on the 2:30 ferry. We could have easily spent more time swimming and splashing in the water but decided we’d had enough sun for the day.
You can easily see the sites of the island in a few hours, you can then return to Dubrovnik, or settle in for some relaxing time at one of the island’s swimming holes.
Can I Swim at Lokrum Island?
Yes, you can swim in many places at Lokrun Island. With small children, we prefer the shallow, sheltered tide pools close to Stigene Rocks, but we saw many other people swimming off the side of the island close to the ferry port.
There is also rumored to be a nude beach if you head left off the ferry, but we didn’t go looking for it.
Our Tips for Visiting Lokrum Island
Here are our best tips for visiting Lokrum Island as a day trip from Dubrovnik.
Start Early
Try to start as early as possible. We took the first boat over, at 9:00. The ticket booth opens at 8:30. Which means that you and the people on your boat will have at least an hour on the island before other tourists join you.
This quiet time is great for seeing the more popular spots on the island. You’ll be past the monastery and hiking deeper into the island by the time most tourists are getting off the ferry.
Pack a Picnic
There are a few cafes on the island, but they are clustered together. You will have more flexibility if you bring a picnic. There are picnic tables set up in the olive grove, or you can choose a bench or other scenic location to have your own picnic.
Especially when traveling with kids, it means you can choose when to eat lunch without worrying about trekking back to a cafe.
You will need cash for any drinks, snacks, or meals that you purchase on Lokrum Island. Vendors on the island only accept Euros.
Bring Hats and Sunscreen
Lokrum Island can be hot. While some trails provide a bit of shade, you’ll want to be prepared for lots of sun.
Don’t Forget Your Swimming Gear
Bring swimming gear and water shoes. The areas around the island are great for taking a cool dip in the water but mostly consist of pebbly or rocky shores. This is one of the best ways to spend a few relaxing hours on the island

Have a chance to sit on the Iron Throne!
Dubrovnik , Croatia (about 900 km far from Vicenza – north east Italy) has been a prominent Game of Thrones filming location since Season 2 and the Croatian city is a must visit for any Game of Thrones fan. Dubrovnik is Kingâs Landing, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms! The Old Town is full to the brim of filming spots and there are several other locations around the city. See the Dubrovnik Tourist Board here .

FROM VICENZA / AVIANO TO DUBROVNIK BY CAR:
In the Dubrovnik old city thereâs a small GoT fan shop with a replica of the Iron throne (you have to buy something to make picture on the Iron Throne). Sometimes there are queues in front of the shop because of the little space, for sure you have to wait for making the picture in high season (about June to September).
In the Lokrum Island (an easy day trip from Dubrovnik  lying only 680 meters offshore, a 20-minute boat ride) at the Lokrum Visitor Centre thereâs an official HBO Game of Thrones little expo center where you get your chance to sit on the original Iron Throne (apparently donated by HBO)! It’s free to sit there and have your photo taken. For more information, see the islandâs official site .

Arriving at the Iron Throne triggers a countdown, whose duration depends on difficulty : 8 turns on Explorer, 6 turns on Balanced, and 5 turns on Tactician or Honour. When the countdown finishes, any characters who have not returned to the submersible are instantly killed, possibly failing their respective quests. Killed party members, however, can be revived after leaving the Iron Throne.
The cells can be opened most easily by using the levers (which does not cost an action), or alternatively by hitting them with ranged attacks.
There are various types of hostile Sahuagin patrolling the corridors, and more that spawn over time from the deep water in the southern hall. With their low damage output and overall weakness they are unlikely to be a real threat to the party at this point, but they can kill the prisoners or ensnare characters with their nets.

Notes [ edit | edit source ]
- Since the turn limit effectively imposes a limit on the total number of actions the party can take, the task can be made significantly easier by bringing along as many summoned creatures, pets, familiars, etc. as possible, to increase the total number of actions possible. Many summoned creatures are not capable of interacting with objects (and therefore can't open the doors, unless they attack the lever) but they can be helpful in managing the Sahuagin, protecting the prisoners, and getting in the way of the threats to Ravengard (if applicable).
- Likewise, increasing the total number of actions through the use of Haste spells/scrolls and Potions of Speed will help immensely. In the case of Haste spells be careful to avoid situations which would break concentration. In the case of potions, quaffing a new potion as a final bonus action after expending all regular actions, on the turn when the Hastened condition is set to expire will allow continuation without incurring the Lethargic condition -- which could prove problematic or even fatal.
- Sahuagin confronted with a closed door will often stop to try to break it down, which is usually futile as they cannot do enough damage in a single normal hit to overcome the doors' Sturdy condition. Closing some of the doors to the central area can thus effectively neutralize them, though this may make it impossible to rescue anyone still on the other side.
- Any character that died either during the escape or because of the structural failures will wash up on the small beach south of Old Garlow's Place .

How to save the Iron Throne prisoners in Baldur's Gate 3
Rescue Duke Ravengard and the Gondian families.
How to get to the Iron Throne
- Rescue Duke Ravengard
- Help the Gondians
The Baldur's Gate 3 Iron Throne prison is one of the most memorable sections in the game, as you work against the clock to save a bunch of prisoners in Gortash's underwater prison. You see, the city's new archduke is forcing Gondians to build his army of Steel Watch robots, and is guaranteeing their obedience by keeping their families in a secret underwater facility.
But when you rock up to save them, Gortash decides everyone's better off dead, and so sets the place to self-destruct. It's a race against time as you try to save as many as you can, while also looting anything not nailed down and fighting the fishmen who've broken in. Oh, and Wyll's father is also stuck in a cell. Here's how to get to the Iron Throne as well as some tips to give you a fighting chance in saving the prisoners.
Recent updates
June 2024: Saving the Iron Throne prisoners still works as directed below, but here are some relevant bug fixes that have been made since launch: March 2024 : Fixed a dialogue not triggering after destroying the Steel Watch Foundry if all the Gondians, including Zanner, died. February 2024 : Wyll will react accordingly if you fail to save Ravengard from the Iron Throne when the pact with Mizora is broken. November 2023 : Added more autosaves in Lower City locations including Iron Throne. August 2023 : Fixed some facial expressions and camera issues in the dialogue that plays after Gortash is defeated. Fixed a bug where Ravengard would disappear from the camp after Mizora resurrected him.
Gortash's underwater prison is only accessible via submarine, so you need to head to the docks. Find the Flymm's Cargo warehouse and break in, though watch out for the four Wargs standing guard once you're through the doors. Now, use the hatch hidden under the boxes in the northwest corner of the room to climb down to the basement.
Keep going straight on then take a left turn when it appears, and you'll find yourself in the submarine dock. Say a quick word or two to Redhammer the Deviser by the hatchway and he'll agree to take you to the Iron Throne. Upon docking at the prison, Gortash will send you a message threatening to blow it up if you don't leave, which leads to your current predicament of getting out as many hostages as you can before things go boom.
How to rescue Duke Ravengard
When you arrive in the Iron Throne prison, you'll have six turns to free as many prisoners as you can and get back to the dock before the whole thing explodes. While saving Gondian prisoners is important, Duke Ravengard is the real priority, since rescuing Wyll's father lets you continue his quest in the Wyrmway . Climbing down the ladder into the main prison, you'll want to head east toward the three cells at the end of the corridor. I used Shadowheart for this with a couple of minions to keep the Sahaguin enemies occupied. Duke Ravengard is in the central cell, which can be opened using the lever next to the door.
Now, if you chose to free Wyll from his contract in exchange for his father's life, Mizora will show up and try to kill the duke as soon as he exits, summoning some explosive spiders. I used Shadowheart to cast Sanctuary on him, and then Dimension Door to teleport past the spiders for safety. Get him onboard the submarine and he'll be safe.
How to help the Gondians
The trickiest part of the Iron Throne is saving the Gondian prisoners locked in cells throughout the prison, and getting them back to the dock before those six turns are over.
The biggest gaming news, reviews and hardware deals
Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.
The Gondian Hostages are marked as objectives on the minimap, so are easy to find. Besides the hostages in the central room with you, the two main concentrations are to the south and the west, while Duke Ravenguard is to the east with some other hostages. The good news—though not for the hostages—is that you only need to rescue a few to convince the Gondian's in the Steel Watch Foundry to rise up, letting you continue the quest to destroy it, and get to Gortash with ease.
There are a few tips that can help you handle this, though:
Use spells to move quickly
Whether it's Misty Step, Dimension Door, or even just Fly, the quicker you get to the prisoners and let them out, the faster they'll dash back to the submarine and safety. Gale can be pretty invaluable here since his Arcane Recovery will let him cast an extra Dimension Door, as will the Markoheskhir Legendary staff if you've got it.
Bring minions
The Sahaguin enemies will keep spawning periodically, so it's better to keep them occupied instead of trying to kill them all. Minions are a great method of distracting enemies. I used the Danse Macabre ability you get from the Necromancy of Thay , which lets you summon six ghouls who can potentially paralyse enemies with their attacks.
Don't worry about companion deaths
There are a fair few valuable items to grab in the Iron Throne, including a Mind Flayer Parasite , so be sure to send a character off to loot everything. It's unlikely they'll make it back to the sub in time, but you can just revive them with Withers afterwards. The most important thing is that your main character is at the submarine when your time is up. If you're searching for treasure chests, your main port of call should be sending a character north, then west down the corridor, plus south and then west down that corridor.
Save Omeluum—if you can
You may have met this Mind Flayer in the Underdark, but it seems a bit inconsistent as to whether he actually shows up as a prisoner on the Iron Throne. If he's there, you'll find him in the room directly to the southwest with the operating chair, next to the flooded corridor. Sadly, this makes him the hardest character in the prison to rescue, since he's so far away, but if one of your characters is looting that area already, it shouldn't be too hard to free him. Omeluum also has a spell that lets him teleport back to the submarine with one other character.
