The astonishing landscape of Landmannalaugar still feels remarkably off the beaten track in Iceland . Its mountains are streaked in varying shades of orange and brown (and at times, blue and green),

Those that do make it here come for the hiking or – and more appropriate for those in search of the most relaxing holiday destinations – the hot springs . These are about as natural as they come – scalding water emerges from underneath lava to meet a cold water flow, creating the perfect, scenic conditions for a soak.

Stately Budapest remains one of the grandest of Europe’s capital cities. The highlight of any visit is undoubtedly the chance to wallow in one of the city’s restorative spas, fed by thermal waters from subterranean springs. The Art Nouveau Gellért Baths offer an air of exclusivity among its mosaics and stained glass. Meanwhile, the Széchenyi Baths are the hottest in the city, with outdoor pools and water rapids to add to the experience.

Seychelles is the stuff that tropical-paradise dreams are made of. Ridiculously soft white sand, clear azure waters and a lush interior that’s just waiting for exploration. It’d be hard for even the most stressed-out city dweller to not arrive here and feel themselves instantly relax.

Though the name conjures up images of honeymooners and expensive resorts, it is thankfully possible to stay here on a smaller budget – making paradise a much more affordable possibility.

Cosmopolitan Vancouver , scenically set by the water and ringed by mountains, feels like the best of both worlds. This vibrant, exciting city is within spitting distance of some astounding nature. The city itself has a laid-back vibe that has much in common with the US’s west coast cities. There’s arguably no better place to experience this – whether on the beach or on two wheels – than semi-wild Stanley Park, the city’s green heart.

It’s worth making the stunning Bay of Islands, in the far north of New Zealand , your final stop after indulging in the country’s plethora of adrenaline-filled activities. It is truly one of the best holiday destinations to relax. This subtropical region is best explored from the water. While here, you might get to spot whales, penguins and dolphins. Even the largest island of the bunch – Urupukapuka – remains remarkably tranquil.

North of Cusco, the Sacred Valley stretches out towards Machu Picchu . Here, in the steep-sided valley, you’ll find the evocative Inca ruins of Pisac and Ollantaytambo, in dramatic positions high above the river. Once you’ve spent a few days exploring, head a bit downriver to Urubamba, which is becoming something of a spiritual centre, to relax under the snowy peaks of the Andes.

There are plenty of places to relax in the Yucatán , but head away from the coast to colourful Valladolid and you’ll discover a much more local side to the region. The greatest pleasure here is in exploring on foot, ducking into little shops as they take your fancy. Or tying the local specialities and cooling off in the wonderful natural cenote (sinkhole) on the edge of town.

Yucatán is calling you, and this tailor-made Mayan Heritage trip is the way to do it. Experience the jungle in a completely new way; enjoy incredible food, beautiful sunsets, and the warmth of its communities.

On an island that’s synonymous with chilling out, Treasure Beach particularly stands out as one of the most relaxing holiday destinations. The beaches are blissfully quiet by Jamaican standards. However, there’s still very much a local heart to the beachside community, which definitely adds to its appeal. This is undoubtedly the place to come to discover the island’s gentler side.

It’s hard not to be enchanted by the Dordogne as it winds its way past dramatically-sited château and medieval villages. The region is best appreciated at a slow pace —whether floating down the river in a canoe, over the fields in a hot air balloon, or over a leisurely lunch in a sun-dappled square.

Even driving here is a pleasure. It’s hard to beat driving the quiet country roads at dusk as the river glints appealingly beside you.

Let’s be honest, you’re unlikely to head to Bora Bora for anything other than the delights of sun and sea. The ultimate way to do it, if you can afford to, is to stay in an over-water hut, from where the peaceful sunsets and vast expanses of aquamarine water are yours alone to savour.

If it all gets a bit too quiet for your liking, explore the beautiful lagoons by boat, hike into the interior or experience the vibrant underwater life on a diving trip.

The largest national park in the UK, and right in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, the Cairngorms boast the kind of jaw-dropping scenery that’ll impress you even in the worst weather. And if it does turn out to be dreich (dreary), it’s hard to beat cosying up by a fire in a Highland pub with a glass or two of whisky.

This tailor-made trip to Scotland's Wildest Natural Scenery is a breath of fresh air and perfect to explore the most enchanting landscapes of the Highlands. It will allow you to get to know the wildest landscapes of Scotland, its fast-paced history and its amazing traditions.

The silence of the desert is what makes Joshua Tree National Park one of the most relaxing holiday destinations. There’s undoubtedly something otherworldly about the eponymous Joshua Trees (which are in fact yucca rather than trees). The park is at its most magical at dusk when the desert shifts into varying shades of orange, pink and red.

The best way to experience the park is on foot – clambering over giant boulders, hiking down to an oasis, or just finding a shady spot from which to soak up the silence.

Tucked up in the far northeastern corner of South Africa , right by the border with Mozambique, Kosi Bay feels like a bit of an adventure to get to. It is blissfully undiscovered by most other tourists. Hippos wallow in the waters around here, while the bay itself is fabulous for snorkelling. The beautiful stretches of sand are so quiet and secluded that you won’t quite believe your luck.

The hairpin bends that litter the roads through this mountainous part of Andalucía may mean you arrive feeling a little less than relaxed. However, it doesn’t take long to slip into the sleepy rhythms of this beautiful region. Spend your days exploring the quiet white-washed villages , tasting the delicious local jamón, or taking a leisurely ramble along a mountainside path.

Famously laid-back, Amsterdam is not a city to rush through. Join the locals and explore by bike – at a meandering pace, of course – or wander over bridges and quiet side streets to discover the city’s most alluring side for yourself. It feels especially magical in winter when countless cosy bars provide the perfect respite from the chilly northern air.

North of Luang Prabang on the wide Nam Ou River and surrounded by striking limestone karsts is the village of Nong Khiaw. It is one of the most relaxing holiday destinations in Laos . While there are plenty of activities on offer in the surrounding countryside, it’s really about the simple pleasures here. Chill out in your riverside hammock, ideally with a cold Beer Lao in hand, as the sun sinks below the horizon.

One of Southeast Asia’s lesser-travelled countries, Laos is definitely off the beaten track. Itt has retained its culture, charm and traditional village life, wild jungle and stunning countryside. On this tailor-made trip to Historical Laos , you'll find tradition and mystery and a unique adventure.

Caye Caulker more than lives up to its motto of 'Go Slow', and at just 35km northeast of Belize City it makes for one of the most relaxing holiday destinations. Best of all, at affordable prices.

This relaxed and easy-going island is only just over 8km long. The big appeal here, in addition to the gorgeous white-sand beaches, is the abundance of opportunities that the reef – 1.5km offshore – provides, not least snorkelling among the coral canyons.

Take this tailor-made family-friendly adventure through Guatemala and Belize . Discover Lake Atitlan on kayaks, explore the active volcano Pacaya or play hide and seek in the large archaeological complex of Tikal before heading out to Belize for its fantastic underwater world and beaches.

It’s not hard to be blown away by the majestic landscape of the Torres del Paine National Park in Chilean Patagonia. The centrepiece is undoubtedly the immense Paine Massif. Of which the Torres del Paine themselves usually steal the show as they tower over the almost too-reflective-to-seem-real waters of Lago Nordenskjöld.

The vast expanse of Patagonia is home to extreme landscapes, from jagged mountains, stark glaciers, clear blue lakes, and grassy fields. You will find them all in Torres del Paine, a huge contrast to the start of this tailor-made trip to Chile in the historical, bustling city of Santiago.

The whole point of a vacation is to disconnect from everyday life and cut loose. When it comes to recharging our batteries, an action-packed itinerary can sometimes be too much. We have found 20 of the most relaxing holiday destinations in the world. From tropical islands to laid-back cities here they are.

The information in this article is inspired by  Inside Guides , your essential guides for visiting the world.

1. The Maldives: Home to 100s of most relaxing holiday destinations

There's a reason the World Spa Awards designated the Maldives   as the top spa destination on the planet: where pampering yourself is concerned, this dreamy country takes the cake. Comprised of coral atolls in the aquamarine waters of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is home to hundreds of tropical islands, each one more spectacular than the last.

For relaxation at its best, Kuramathi Maldives is a luxury resort with a spa, offering treatments based on traditional Asian therapies, as well as pristine beaches and a diving center.

Meanwhile, the lavish Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives on North Malé Atoll offers luxurious bungalow accommodation in a stunning island destination complemented by exquisite cuisine and a tranquil spa.

2. Tulum, Mexico: Where the beaches are paradise

With one of its major attractions known as Playa Paraiso (Paradise Beach), it's little wonder that Tulum on the Caribbean Coast of Mexico makes it on to our list of the world's most relaxing places.

Playa Paraiso is a secluded, palm-fringed expanse of white sands that remains relatively quiet and relaxed despite its abundant beauty and calm, crystal clear waters. Here you can spend your days swimming and snorkeling, before savoring cool drinks and authentic Mexican dishes at the local beach bars and restaurants.

Take a look at Insight Guides The Magic of the Yucatan and Mexico City trip and explore the real Yucatan Peninsula from archaeological sites to the beaches of Tulum. Then change the vibe completely in Mexico's vivid capital city.

3. Phuket, Thailand: The perfect place to unwind

Phuket is easily one of the hottest locations in Thailand , drawing in endless visitors with its sparkling beaches and laid-back atmosphere. But that doesn't mean it isn't also one of the most relaxing holiday destinations to visit. In fact, Phuket can be the perfect place to unwind.

The northernmost reaches of the island’s western coastline encompass the extensive stretch of Hat Mai Khao beach, which is part of the protected Sirinat National Park . Its secluded location makes it one of the island’s quietest, with golden sands and very clean waters.

Truly kick back at destinations such as Anantara Layan Phuket Resort to the south, where you can savor luxurious villa accommodation, fine dining and unspoiled beaches.

4. Langkawi, Malaysia: Relax in the great outdoors

Lovers of the great outdoors can get their travel fix in the   Langkawi   archipelago in Malaysia , a destination known for its staggering limestone cliffs, lush greenery, and jaw-dropping natural geological formations.

Langkawi is actually Southeast Asia's premier geopark. It's jam-packed with biodiversity you'd be hard-pressed to find anywhere else and the towering mountains and intricate cave routes are nothing short of paradise.

5. Ubud, Bali: A soulful retreat for the mind and body

Writer Elizabeth Gilbert chose Bali in Indonesia to round out her famous Eat, Pray, Love  journey. We can't say we blame her.

'Ubud, Bali is one of the most tranquil and relaxing destinations on earth,' says Jon, owner of a luxury villa in Ubud . ' There are few places that can delicately balance relative modernity and quality infrastructure with quiet, peace and natural beauty .'

He also touches on Bali's multitude of high-end accommodations, spas and retreats – perfect for some introspection and soul-searching. ' You can get love, adventure, rest, and enlightenment in Ubud, Bali. It has a rightful place on a list of the most relaxing places on earth .'

Find serenity for yourself on an   Insight Guides Bali Yoga Retreat trip. Appreciate the restorative value of meditation sessions on this remarkable Indonesian island and enjoy the opportunity of unwinding in soulful Ubud.

6. Vientiane, Laos: A laid back and walkable capital

There are plenty of reasons why Laos should be on your travel wish list. In the ultra-walkable and easy-going capital of Vientiane delicious restaurants and bakeries await. You can head out into the peaceful surroundings of small-town Laos, and beyond to discover ancient relics of years gone by.

This laid-back nation is also home to some of Asia’s most historic shrines and archaeological sites, such as Wat Phu Hindu temple ruins. Discover fascinating Laos from Vientiane to Luang Prabang on an Insight Guides Historical Laos trip.

7. Casa Palopo, Guatemala: A relaxing lakeside haven

Guatemala   certainly has no shortage of impressive natural wonders, and Lago de Atitlán or Lake Atitlan, is certainly high on that list. This mesmerizing volcanic caldera is known for its highland setting and charming lakeside villages.

A wonderful, relaxing hotel in which to savor this highland lake location is charming Casa Palopó which offers sweeping views of Lake Atitlan and its majestic volcanoes from a hilltop, lakeside location.

The hotel's individually designed, Mayan-inspired rooms are ideal for guests seeking a relaxing escape. These are complemented by a casual restaurant, an infinity pool and a serene terrace, all of which afford stunning panoramas of the lake.

8. Galle, Sri Lanka: Relax in historic luxury

The city of Galle on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka is perfect for the traveler looking for a little luxury and a spot of relaxation.

One of Asia’s most perfectly preserved period pieces, colonial Galle Fort dates back to the city's period of rule under the Dutch, who seized Galle from the Portuguese in 1640 and spent the next 150 years embellishing and fortifying the town.

The Dutch influence remains apparent in the streets of low-slung colonial villas, many of which now house delightful boutiques. So the town makes a wonderful destination for shopping and leisurely strolls. Discover Galle's charms for yourself as part of Insight Guides Deluxe Sri Lanka trip.

9. Nha Trang, Vietnam: A town with hidden charms

Nha Trang   has a split personality. On the one hand, it's one of the liveliest, most celebrated party towns in Vietnam . Yet on the other hand, its hidden charms, attractive beaches, and proximity to fascinating destinations such as Hội An and Ho Chi Minh City make it an unexpected spot for a relaxing vacation.

Experience the delights of Nah Trang for yourself as part of Insight Guides' Vietnam and Cambodia by Rail trip, which includes a two-night stay in the multi-faceted town.

10. Bagan, Myanmar: High flying relaxation

Travelers seeking remote adventure and laid-back discovery would be correct in adding Bagan to their list of most relaxing places.

You may well be familiar with this city in Myanmar from the iconic images of buoyant hot air balloons gently floating above ancient, gold-dipped pagodas and temples. See this verdant countryside peppered with stupas, and misty, jagged peaks as part of an Insight Guides Famous Waterways of Myanmar trip.

11. Mykonos, Greece: Cut loose in the Cyclades

For some, relaxing means cutting loose from the pressures of everyday life, indulging in top-notch food and enjoying some fun. Mýkonos offers wonderful granite-sand beaches and a dazzlingly beautiful port town that draw numerous visitors each year.

Along with fantastic designer shopping and buzzing nightlife for all orientations, the island also offers some of the most luxurious accommodation in the Greek islands .

However, Mýkonos is also a destination where you can fully unwind. On the north coast, Agios Sostis and Panormos are undeveloped, sheltered sandy beaches where you can relish idyllic peace and quiet. In Mykonos Town, the Folklore Museum and the Archaeological Museum, at different ends of the quay, are both full of fascinating objects.

Enjoy a boat cruise to Mykonos as part of   Insight Guides The Historical and Mythological Cyclades Islands   trip. Then spend time wandering through Mykonos Town's maze of narrow streets lined with boutiques, restaurants and diminutive churches.

12. Dead Sea, Jordan: relax in mineral spas

Year-round sunshine in Jordan means it’s always possible to experience the Middle Eastern café culture in the capital Amman, before traveling through the breathtaking desert landscapes of Wadi Rum .

Floating in the cobalt waters of the Dead Sea is easy as they are so heavy with salt and oils. But savoring beauty treatments in one of the region's luxury mineral spas is an experience not to be missed.

Pamper yourself with therapies ranging from rejuvenating natural mud wraps to purifying milk baths. Or try Dead Sea salt scrubs, which use the local waters to exfoliate skin, leaving you utterly refreshed. Discover all the restorative powers of the Dead Sea's salty shores on Insight Guides Treasures of Jordan   trip.

13. Nachi Falls, Japan: sacred and serene wonders

The exquisite Nachi Falls in Japan are a magnificent sight to behold. Hidden away in the Nachi Primeval Forest, the waterfall features an incredible 133-meter drop.

The Nachi Falls attract worshippers and travelers alike to Seiganto-ji , a beautifully serene and ornate Buddhist temple that is said to have been created specifically for worshipping the majesty of nature. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the three-tiered pagoda sublimely complements the waterfall, helping create one of the most relaxing destinations in the world.

Choose an Insight Guides Self Guided Adventure Tour of Japan and immerse in natural beauty, relax on sacred islands, discover historic cities drenched in culture and ancient customs, see Samurai and sample street food.

14. Lakshadweep, India: remote paradise islands

Luxuriant palm groves, abundant coral reefs, and dazzling white-sand coastlines are the hallmarks of the Lakshadweep Islands – a corner of remote paradise scattered about 200 to 400 miles west of   the Keralan coast in India .

These wonderfully isolated specks of land are known for exceptional snorkeling and diving, thanks to the exotic marine life and sparkling, clear lagoons. Lakshadweep isn't the easiest destination to reach, which of course only makes it that much more alluring.

Access to the islands is controlled by the Indian Government, and foreign travelers must book through official tour operators.   The Society for Promotion of Nature, Tourism and Sports   is the primary agency.

For an equally relaxing, but slightly more accessible experience of India, explore from the Golden Triangle to the serene and gentle backwaters of Kerala on Insight Guides Unmissable India trip.

15. Brittany, France: Celtic culture and dramatic coasts

If you're looking to experience a different side of France,   Brittany   ought to be at the top of your travel itinerary. Its delightful towns paired with epic coastlines make for an intoxicating combination. Here, Celtic culture is alive and well amidst rocky seascapes, narrow winding roads, and lush green countryside.

When planning your next relaxing trip to France , be sure to explore Brittany's 'Pink Granite Coast', aptly named for its fascinating pink-hued rocks. Discover it for yourself as part of Insight Guides' Northern France Tour: City to Coast   trip.

16. Mount Lassen Volcanic National Park, California

There's California , then there's Lassen Volcanic National Park, a destination that is awesome in every sense of the word.

According to the National Park Service , this travel gem's claims to fame are its, ' steaming fumaroles, meadows freckled with wildflowers, clear mountain lakes, and numerous volcanoes .'

As far as unwinding goes, the Drakesbad Guest Ranch sits surrounded by mountain meadows and lakes, offering cozy accommodation in rustic bungalow cabins that don't have electricity. This is the perfect destination to unplug during a truly off-the-grid stay. Hiking trails, horseback riding and hot springs set the stage for an altogether relaxing vacation.

17. Mendoza, Argentina: Welcome to wine country

One of the world’s greatest wine capitals, Mendoza wine country in west central Argentina is a must for aficionados. But just a 90-minute flight away from the capital Buenos Aires , there’s plenty to enjoy here besides Malbec.

Widely regarded as the most relaxing city in China , Hangzhou   is sure to satisfy your inner romantic. Its slow-paced energy, combined with rolling expanses of lush green mountains and time-honored pavilions, are enough to stop you in your tracks.

19. Dubai, UAE: Relaxation with a side of glamour

The UAE probably isn't the first place to spring to mind when thinking of relaxing holiday destinations, but this exotic location should not be overlooked. Dubai   is a luxury traveler's dream, especially for those who are out for a more glamorous holiday.

High-end shopping, opulent accommodation, and fine dining converge in this Middle Eastern hotspot. Where else can you go skiing in the desert   before taking a private helicopter tour?

Come nightfall, Dubai has plenty to offer in the way of top-notch live entertainment, like rhythmic belly dancers that cross paths with fine Arabic cuisine at the luxurious Bab al Shams   desert resort. Alternatively, immerse in the best of the city on Insight Guides' Dubai Luxury Stopover trip.

20. Lake Bled, Slovenia: As peaceful and pretty as it looks

Built in the 15th century, the church on Bled Island is a much-loved landmark in Slovenia . In fact, tradition says that for couples who get married here, the groom is to carry the bride from the dock before ringing the church bell for good luck. Weddings aside, this destination is every bit as charming (and peaceful) as its picture suggests.

Slovenia is a small and easy to explore country on a relaxed Insight Guides Treasures of Slovenia trip from Ljubljana to beautiful, romantic Lake Bled.

If you’re looking for the world’s most relaxing places — cities, regions, and things to do in them — look no further. Here are some quiet vacation spots to de-stress, find peace and relax

From Europe to Asia via the US and South America , we’ve found some of the most chilled cities and beautiful scenery to take your mind off the rush and stress of the modern world. If you’d like activities, we’ve got suggestions for those too: a spot of voyage, perhaps, or a natural spa break ? Take some time to unwind with Kiwi.com.

Chilled cities

Portland, us.

Cannon Beach — Shutterstock

Portland apparently has the second-highest air quality of any city in the US, so taking to one of the 350 or so hiking trails that surround it should be an immediate priority. Head out to the Columbia River Gorge to the east, or the wild northern Pacific coast and places like Cannon Beach for some of the northwest’s most arresting scenery.

The city itself is very green as well. The huge Washington Park covers 400 acres on the west bank of the Willamette river and contains things like the Oregon Zoo and the World Forestry Center , as well as playgrounds, an archery range, and much more. Take the Portland Aerial Tram to Terwilliger Boulevard Parkway, three miles or so of winding road that affords wonderful views over the city and is a popular spot for joggers and cyclists. Back Downtown, you can treat yourself to a tour of Portland’s many microbreweries, or go and see a spot of live music or theater. It’s one of the finest cities in the US for just taking it easy.

Dating from 1663 and built by Dutch colonists, the Unesco World Heritage Site of Galle is one of Sri Lanka’s absolute jewels. The area to the south of the city, known as Galle Fort, is a fortified enclave that is now a city in itself. Surrounded by the ocean on three sides and with reminders everywhere of its role as an important trading port, it’s a beautifully exotic place to stay.

Exploring within the huge fortress, through its rambling lanes and quiet, fragrant courtyards, you’ll come across tiny cafés, boutiques and workshops, each selling wonderful local wares. Look up to see spires of ancient churches and domes of ornate mosques. Even more than this, though, is the feeling that even though this amazing place has remained the same for almost half a century, it’s still as alive now as it ever was. It’s unusual to explore a city that’s so traditional, laid-back and content, yet still clearly thriving. It’s an intoxicating mix for any traveler.

Graz, Austria

View over Graz from Schlossberg — Shutterstock

Perched on the eastern edge of the Alps, Graz is the capital of Styria, a region of hills, lakes, and other gently pleasant natural features. Graz reflects that: a hilly, green city with a compact center comprising winding medieval streets and red-roofed buildings, many with imposing historical frontages.

The best views are from the top of Schlossberg, the hill that dominates the city. Home to what used to be a sprawling castle, it’s the most difficult bit of walking you’ll have to do, but rewards you with gardens and shady spots from which to look out over the city. The mighty Uhrturm clocktower is here as well, but why worry about the time?

Graz is perfect for a couple of days of doing very little apart from wandering around, sitting in a park to read or have a coffee, poking around one of the museums, farmers’ markets or galleries, and ending each day with a wonderful dinner in one of the many excellent restaurants. Ausgezeichnet.

Relaxing regions

Provence, france.

Often regarded as one of the most beautiful regions of France (and that’s up against some pretty stiff competition), Provence suffered a little because of it. The 1980s and 1990s saw an influx of tourists from places like the UK and Germany as its secrets became known, but now it’s back to a nice, relaxing level.

The landscape is stunning, with views of the Alps away to the east of the region, and rolling hills gradually cascading down to the ocean on the Côte d’Azur. Not only that; it also smells amazing, with pine forests and vineyards covering the hillsides, lavender fields stretching between the villages, and olive groves providing shade from the sun. The ancient city of Avignon is not to be missed, or to spend some time relaxing with the beautiful people, head to elegant Nice or glitzy Monte Carlo.

Mendoza Region, Argentina

Warm weather, long days and little rain means the winegrowing region of Mendoza attracts visitors all year round. Some come for outdoor activities — white-water rafting, climbing, hiking and horseback riding are all very popular — but if you’re really looking to relax, there are many ways to do that, too.

There are over a thousand vineyards in the region and, of course, most host tours and tastings. But you can also take cookery courses at some, learning to cook simple, rustic Argentinian cuisine that’ll take you back there whenever you make it. If you’re not a wine drinker, you can tour the olive farms and try their wares instead, and there are spas aplenty as well. If you’re lucky, you might find a place that combines all of this: a vineyard with home cooking, luxurious rooms, a spa and views of some of the finest scenery in South America? Why not!

Lake Bled, Slovenia

In a small corner of a small country is one of the most beautiful and relaxing places in Europe. Only 55 kilometers from Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia (for that is the country), lies Lake Bled. It’s not especially huge, about 6.5 kilometers around its shore, but it’s perfect for walking in the surrounding forests accompanied by only birdsong and the lapping of water at the lake’s edge.

In the middle of the lake lies Bled Island , and it’s home to the Church of the Assumption of Mary which can be visited by taking a ride on a pletna , a traditional flat-bottomed wooden boat. You can also swim in the lake, or borrow a bicycle from one of the small local hotels and explore that way. Otherwise, it’s just a matter of lying by the water’s edge and soaking up the sun.

Pleasant pastimes

The yoga barn, bali, indonesia.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by The Yoga Barn, Bali (@theyogabarn)

Maybe even the act of deciding what you do when you go on holiday is stressful; if so, there are retreats and vacations that have programs laid out for you. The Yoga Barn is one such place.

Bali is clearly conducive to something as meditative and spiritual as yoga anyway, but if you visit The Yoga Barn, you get the whole gamut of courses, treatments and everything else on offer. If you’re just passing, you can opt to take a single class, but you can also opt to stay there for up to a month, taking courses in yoga, dance, meditation and art, or relaxing with massage, acupuncture, reiki, or other healing techniques. Couple all of that with a location surrounded by lush, green jungle and the laid-back vibes of the nearby town of Ubud, and you’ve got an escape you can really lose yourself in.

Amanemu onsen resort, Ise-Shima, Japan

Located in the forests that surround Ago Bay is the Amanemu onsen . Being a volcanic country, Japan has many onsen — hot springs — and they range from being basically holes in the ground in which you can bathe, to luxurious spa resorts built around the healing waters. This is very much the latter.

With accommodation that overlooks the peaceful bay and with 2,000 square meters of spa facilities, you could spend your entire time there. That would be a dreadful waste, though — the nearby Ise Jingu is a vast Shinto shrine, the most sacred site in the whole country, and so beloved that it’s known as the “Soul of Japan”. To come this far and not walk the pilgrims’ routes that have been trodden since the sixth century would be a terrible shame. It’s one of the most peaceful and revered places in a country rightly proud of its spiritual traditions.

Saruni Samburu safari resort, Kenya

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Saruni Lodges (@saruni.lodges)

Many people wouldn’t consider a safari to be that relaxing. It’s probable that dawn wake-up calls and a lot of sitting around have to happen in order to see the animals in their natural habitat. So what if you could sit in a pool or on a veranda, and let nature come to you?

Placed on top of an outcrop, this is the only lodge in over 200,000 acres of wilderness , affording spectacular views of the landscape all about, including Mount Kenya. You can opt for a tour of the region, guided by local Samburu warriors who take pride in their land and culture and passionately educate guests about their history and community.

Alternatively, you can spend your evenings in one of the six eco-chic (as they call them) villas, eating a delicious meal on your private veranda and watching elephants and giraffes mill about the countryside below, as the sun slowly sets over your African paradise.

The most westerly point on mainland Australia is this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Death Valley, California

Known as the hottest place on earth, Death Valley reached a record temperature of 53°C in 2019. It’s a vast area of extremes: with snowy peaks, scorching sands and wildflower meadows, the National Park encompasses a wide range of different landscapes. One of the most popular locations is the multi-hued Artists Palette, a series of eroded hills whose colouring is due to the oxidation of natural metal deposits in the mountains. ‘ Star Wars ’ fans will be keen to see the site that inspired the planet Tatooine.

Monks at Bayon temple

Bayon, Cambodia

Built in honour of one of Cambodia’s most famous kings, Jayavarman VII, Bayon is a 12th-century state temple that’s a unique architectural feat in the heart of Angkor Thom. Fifty-four gothic towers carved with 216 gargantuan smiling faces of Avalokiteshvara – the bodhisattva of compassion – fill the temple , and the design showcases the shift from Hinduism to Mahayana Buddhism. With Angkor Wat not far away, Bayon, its off-the-beaten track little sister, is a close second in popularity.

Las Coloradas, Yucatan, Mexico

The incredible pink lakes here make up part of the protected nature reserve of Ría Lagartos Biosphere on Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula. Red-coloured algae, plankton and brine shrimp that thrive in the waters not only turn the native flamingos pink but help produce 500,000 tons of salt per year.

The Avenue of the Baobabs Madagascar

Avenue of the Baobabs, Madagascar

This is one of Madagascar's most visited natural sites – and for good reason. Aside from the spectacular photo opportunities on offer as the sun casts auburn shades on the trees, travellers come to support local conservation efforts, and spot the unique wildlife that frolics in the overgrowth nearby.

Blue Lagoon Iceland

Blue lagoon, Iceland

One of  Iceland's  most spectacular sites is, surprisingly, man-made. The Blue Lagoon's waters are a byproduct of a nearby geothermal power plant, which passes through turbines and into the lagoon. Natural geological layers account for the water's rich mineral content, which travellers use to their benefit, bathing and smothering themselves in the rich clay.

Cape Town, South Africa

Eager to spot a waddle of penguins in the wild? There's no need to save up for the ultimate excursion to Antarctica – although that's just as high on many bucket lists. On the shores of some of  South Africa's  most picturesque beaches, the animals mingle in search of a mate – safe from the fearsome great white that circle beneath the waves just metres away.

Colorado River in the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon, USA

The Grand Canyon is part of the Colorado River basin and, aside from its beauty, is geologically significant as the waters that pass through here have revealed billions of years worth of rock layers. While it's popular with travelling day-trippers, native Americans still call it home, having first settled in the caves thousands of years ago.

Inside view on IkKil Cenote close to Chichen Itza Mexico

Cenotes, Mexico

Formed by the collapse of eroded limestone,  Mexico's  cenotes harbour secrets and beauty discovered by sunshine-chasers each year. The unique formations were celebrated by the ancient Maya people, and archaeological investigations over the years have found artefacts made from gold, jadeite, shell and more on the sandy depths.

A road poising through the desert of Joshua Tree as sunrise

Joshua Tree National Park, USA

Stone tools and spearheads discovered in Joshua Tree National Park suggest the region was inhabited as long as 8,000 years ago. Modern travellers experience this wilderness in a very different way, checking into luxurious micro-resorts and serviced holiday homes. Think the landscapes are otherworldly by day? Look to the skies at night for an altogether different, and unforgettable, sight.

Maldives

The Maldives

Spoiling retreats of all shapes and sizes litter the sandy banks of the Maldives , an archipelagic state in the Indian Ocean. Between the indulgent wellness resorts and exotic restaurants, the crystal-clear waters offer ample opportunity for snorkelling and diving excursions. Dive into the blue and find yourself in a world of kaleidoscopic colour as fish fizzle in and out of focus.

Peyto Lake in Canada

Peyto Lake, Canada

One of Canada's most beautiful and most-photographed lakes is a pool of cerulean on darker days, while its glacier waters mirror the sky's dappled blue on brighter days. Keen amblers are well rewarded as they reach Bow Summit, the highest point on the Icefields Parkway.

Argent Beach on La Digue Island Seychelles

La Digue, Seychelles

The third most populated island in  the Seychelles , La Digue takes its name from a ship in the fleet of French explorer Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne, who visited the Seychelles in 1768. Thanks to its otherworldly granite formations, glassy waters and fine sand, Anse Source d'Argent is often regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world – a spot travellers fawn over as they venture out from the island's uber-luxurious hotels and resorts.

Grand Prismatic Spring Yellowstone National Park Wyoming

Yellowstone National Park, USA

Bison, bears, geese, deer – these are just some of the animals that call the oldest national park in the world home. Each change of the seasons beckons new residents out of their homes, as many cosy up during the cold winters and await the first signs of spring. A highlight of the park is the Yellowstone Caldera, a gargantuan crater that was formed by a cataclysmic volcanic eruption some 640,000 years ago.

7 U.S. TRIPS THAT WILL REINVIGORATE YOUR SOUL AFTER A VERY (VERY) LONG YEAR

relaxing trips in the united states grand canyon

1. See The Grand Canyon (arizona)

Our problems often seem big until we’re standing in front of something as massive and majestic as the Grand Canyon with its striated red rocks that seem to go on forever. All of the sudden those trivial little things that took up so much attention only moments before no longer matter. This immense, pilgrimage-worthy destination just seems to have that effect on people. That tiff with your sister or roommate? Just a blip on the radar in the scheme of things--especially when you consider the Grand Canyon was formed over millions of years.

relaxing trips in the united states pikes peak

2. Conquer Pikes Peak (colorado Springs, Colorado)

Sometimes things happen in life that make us forget our strength and potential. The antidote to that feeling of powerlessness? Conquering a new challenge, like perhaps one of the Centennial State’s fourteeners (mountains taller than 14,000 feet above sea level). It’s no secret that Colorado brims with beautiful places . But Pikes Peak—the highest summit of the southern Front Range of the Rockies—isn’t just pretty, it’s a quad-torching, endurance-testing, boundary-pushing adventure that will reveal levels of fortitude and resilience you never even knew existed. The sense of accomplishment you’ll feel at the top is truly unparalleled.

3. Drive The Hana Highway (maui, Hawaii)

There’s something so uplifting about rolling down the windows (even better if you rent a convertible), cranking up the tunes and just hitting the open road. Maui’s Hana Highway is not only one of the 25 things you must do when in Hawaii , it’s also the most therapeutic, at least by our estimation. The gushing waterfalls, tropical flora and scenic turnouts are a poignant and picturesque reminder to stop and soak it all in. Pro tip: set aside at least two hours to complete the 52-mile-long journey, as it can be slow going with the blind turns and one-way bridges.

relaxing trips in the united states northern lights

4. Glimpse The Northern Lights

Of all the incredible, indescribable, life-changing natural phenomena in the world, the Northern Lights might just be the most eye-popping, jaw-dropping and soul-satisfying on the planet. The way the colorful streams of light illuminate the sky is truly indescribable (you just need to see it IRL). Those who have gazed up at the Northern Lights remark on the shift in perspective that such a unique and unforgettable experience provided. There are actually quite a few places to peep the aurora borealis around the globe. In the United States, Fairbanks, Alaska reigns supreme.

5. Hike The Appalachian Trail

Need a mood boost? To quote Elle Woods, “endorphins make people happy.” We’re not just advocating for any old form of exercise (though physical activity in general has a slew of obvious benefits), but rather movement in a magical setting. Hiking the iconic Appalachian Trail pairs quad-torching trekking with fresh, alpine air and scenery so splendid it all but promises a spiritual awakening. Now that’s a win for your mind, body and soul. Guess the only thing left to do is decide where to start your expedition. Might we suggest the northernmost jumping-off point, Mount Katahdin in Maine?

6. Visit An Active Volcano (big Island, Hawaii)

Will exploring an active volcano such as Kīlauea on the Big Island, which most recently erupted back in 2018, calm your nerves like an aromatherapy spa treatment or a yoga class might? Probably not. Though, that doesn’t mean the exhilarating experience won’t leave you feeling rejuvenated and uplifted in a way that’s equally significant. After all, doing something thrilling can have a profoundly positive emotional and physical impact on a person. Also, just to assuage any concerns, it’s actually completely safe if you book an organized tour and go with a trained guide.

relaxing trips in the united states redwoods

7. Stand Amongst Redwoods (california)

They say hugging trees is a form of therapy. Why not? We’ve heard of stranger stuff. And, hey, whatever works, right? Jokes aside, just being in the presence of towering, hundred-year-old redwood trees has a wonderfully calming energy that’s hard to put into words, but easy to feel in your soul. Take a deep breath, inhale the earthy aroma and exhale the bullsh*t. We swear you’ll feel better in minutes. Leaving you ample time to actually enjoy the trails and picnic areas in one of California’s best national parks .

8. Seek Out Energy Vortexes In Sedona (arizona)

Sedona is a deeply spiritual destination known for its spectacular red-rock formations, epic hiking and energy vortexes. If you’re not familiar with the latter, they’re often described as “swirling centers of energy” that radiate from the earth. The most powerful vortexes (Airport Mesa, Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock and Boynton Canyon) are great spots to meditate, sit alone with your thoughts or connect to Mother Earth. After recharging out in nature, head into town to pick up some healing crystal at one of the New Age shops or hit up a ritzy spa resort for a stress-melting massage.

9. Take A Hot Air Balloon Ride Over Sante Fe

It may sound sort of counterintuitive, but we guarantee standing in the basket of a hot-air balloon , looking down at the expansive Rio Grande Gorge, perhaps even spotting eagles, deer and bighorn sheep, will help you forget about, well, basically anything else that might have been a bother earlier. Ultimately, it’s all about changing your perspective, saying “yes” to new experiences and embracing adventure. And, yes, for some people (thrillseekers and those who thrive at high altitudes, we’re looking at you) that’s totally zenifying—or, at the very least, let’s call it transformative.

10. Sleep Under The Stars In Death Valley National Park (california)

We all need to unplug every now and again. What better way to disconnect from the pressures of daily life than by snoozing somewhere without access to a smartphone charger and cell reception? Death Valley National Park may be one of the hottest, driest places on the planet but at night is a celestial paradise that’s miles away from light pollution. Instead of counting sheep, lull yourself to sleep by watching heavenly bodies dance through the night sky. Dozing off under the stars assures some restful and rejuvenating winks.

Where to go in August for relaxation

visit places relaxing

Panoramic view of the historic town of Assisi in beautiful golden morning light at sunrise in summer, Umbria, Italy

If the mere mention of a relaxing break in August has you wishing your morning coffee were a cocktail on the beach, we've got the magic formula for you: sunny skies, stunning landscapes and a whole lot of peace and quiet. With these island escapes, cultural excursions and rustic retreats your day-to-day will feel miles away.

To the left, blue sky and blue-green sea meet; to the right, several palm trees stretch out over the pristine beach.

Head to Ko Samui for the best Thai beach break in August

The bad news for travellers hoping to catch some sun and sand in Thailand in August is that most of the country is being rained on. The good news: Ko Samui pretty much isn’t. This beguiling isle in the Gulf of Thailand fulfills most fantasies of a tropical paradise – swaying palm trees fringing soft sand, fabulous food, a wide range of accommodation, heady nightlife if you want it, and peaceful patches if you don’t. It enjoys relatively dry (though very hot) weather this month, making it ideal for a beach break.

If you can wrest yourself from the wave-lapped sand, day trips to nearby Ang Thong National Marine Park offer spectacular snorkelling and kayaking among emerald-green cliffs rising from the tea-warm, jade-hued sea.

  • Trip plan: There are direct flights to Ko Samui from cities with intercontinental connections including Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong, and ferries from mainland ports including Don Sak. Then simply choose a coast and pick your beach.
  • Need to know: An admission fee for Ang Thong Marine National Park may be payable on top of tour costs. The marine park closes in November and December.
  • Other months: Dec–Feb: dry; Mar–Aug: hot, mostly dry; Sep–Nov: wet.

The sandstone-coloured buildings of Assisi glow in the sunshine, with a clear blue sky behind and countryside in the distance

Find your rural retreat in central Italy’s gorgeous countryside

Let’s not pretend: Italy in August is hardly a secret retreat – least of all with Italians who holiday en masse this month. But pick the right spot and it’s a splendid time to visit. That spot might well be Umbria : Tuscany’s quieter neighbour has the rolling hillsides, the medieval-walled hill towns, the artistic gems and the food (oh my, the food) and wine, but far fewer visitors.

Quintessentially Italian agriturismos – mostly self-catering accommodation in rooms or apartments within working farms, many with pools – provide wonderful rural bases for couples, families or larger groups. From your cool hilltop lair, you can explore the Roman amphitheatres, frescoes, palaces and basilicas of Spoleto , lovely Gubbio and Assisi (of St Francis fame), and sample Norcian truffles, white Orvieto wine and Perugian chocolates.

  • Trip plan: Perugia, Umbria’s provincial capital, receives international flights, as do Rome, Florence and Ancona, all a drive or train journey away. Car hire is essential for exploring. Various websites list details of agriturismos; try agriturismo.it .
  • Need to know: In early August in particular, popular towns such as Assisi, Spoleto and Orvieto will be busy with Italian tourists, and some restaurants may be closed.
  • Other months: Apr–Jun & Sep–Oct: pleasant weather, towns uncrowded; Jul–Aug: peak season, sights busy; Nov–Mar: chilly.

Many blue-and-white striped fish, and some silver fish with yellow fins, gather in very clear blue waters in the Cook Islands

Snorkel the crystal-clear lagoons of the Cook Islands

These Pacific paradise isles are at their best in August, when rain is at a minimum and the cobalt-blue lagoons are clear and warm. Rarotonga , the largest of the Cook Islands , is the most popular destination. Its lushly clad volcanic pinnacle rises from the azure ocean, with a natural infinity pool enclosed by its circling reef off the south and east coasts. Coconut palms sway, flowers scent the air and fine white sand sifts through the toes.

If you can tear yourself away from the beach, there’s fabulous snorkelling and diving – particularly off Muri on the east coast, where dazzling reef fish flit past your mask – and rewarding hikes into the hilly interior. Experience the islands’ Maori culture at an ‘island night’ – a bonanza of song, dance and local kai (food). For an even more laid-back ambience, take the short flight to Aitutaki , a desert-island idyll with a spectacular lagoon and fine diving.

  • Trip plan: Direct flights from Pape’ete, Auckland and LA serve Rarotonga; Aitutaki is 50 minutes from Rarotonga by air.
  • Need to know: Malaria isn’t a problem on the islands, but dengue fever outbreaks occur, and mosquitoes can be pestilential – use insect repellent.
  • Other months: Apr–Oct: drier, cooler; Nov–Mar: wetter, hotter.

Sunken ruins can be seen below the surface of the clear blue-green waters, with a traditional wooden Turkish sailing boat in the background

Sail a traditional gület on Turkey’s Turquoise Coast

If diving off the wooden deck of a twin-masted sailboat ( gület ) into the blue of the Mediterranean is your idea of heaven on a hot August day, you’re not alone. Back in the 1920s, renowned Turkish writer Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı took to hiring local sponge-divers’ boats to cruise along the so-called Turquoise Coast from Bodrum on what he called ‘Blue Voyages’.

In the intervening decades increasing numbers of Turkish and foreign tourists recognised the appeal, and today a plethora of vessels – some more traditional, some built specifically for the cruises – ply the waters along the Aegean and Mediterranean Coast from Bodrum , Marmaris and Fethiye , stopping to visit ancient sites such as Letoön and Patara, to swim, lounge on a beach, eat and drink. It’s a perfect holiday for families, too.

  • Trip plan: Dalaman is the nearest international airport to both Marmaris and Fethiye; Bodrum has its own airport. Plan ahead for an August departure, to ensure a place on a quality boat. International tour operators offer one-week or longer packages.
  • Need to know: Not all gülets use their sails. Check in advance whether your chosen vessel will be sailing or using a diesel motor.
  • Other months: May–Oct: dry, warm; Nov–Apr: cooler, more rain.

Looking for something a bit more active? Check out where to go in August for adventure .

If getting as far away from life as possible while enjoying a calm, quiet atmosphere is your goal, you know that some places are better than others to achieve that goal.

For example, Bourbon Street in New Orleans is probably not the best idea if you’re looking for peace and solace.

Where are some of the best places to relax and most relaxing vacation destinations to visit in the United States?

The Hawaiian Islands

Some call the tropical islands paradise, which isn’t too far from the truth for many people. Sprawling beaches of snow-white sand, gemstone-colored water, and palm trees swaying in a warm breeze.

Napali Kauai - Best Relaxing Destinations in USA napali-3308391_960_720

The most recent state to join the United States, this beautiful setting is also a well-known tourist destination.

The Hawaiian Islands are a great relaxation destination. What better backdrop to calm down and ease the tension than the sunset over the Pacific?

Thanks to its reputation as a tourist hub, there are also many spa services available to you if the beach isn’t relaxing enough on its own.

There are so many ways to take advantage of these services — from pedicures to facials to massages — that if you chose to, you could spend your whole vacation in a puddle of relaxation at the hotel spa.

Hawai and a series of other US destinations are ideal for couples’ weekends , too.

The Olympic Coast in Washington State

If shaggy pine trees, pebbly beaches, and cold, misty mornings are your idea of perfect solace, head to the northwest corner of the United States and see what you’ve been missing in natural beauty and fantastic hiking opportunities .

Olympic Coast - Best Relaxing Destinations in USA ruby-62191_960_720

Cabins are available for rental, but camping is usually the preferred sleeping arrangement for the adventurous.

The Olympic Coast is a perfect relaxation destination.

The pitter-patter of rain on the roof is a soothing lullaby at night, and when you reach the Spot on the beach with the mist coming off of the ocean and the gulls flying in the background, you realize that you’re witnessing Heaven on Earth.

The Pacific Northwest’s breathtaking scenery is one of the most calming, peaceful places to meditate or practice a yoga routine.

Read this post for the top places to ride a bike (the Pacific coast is included).

There is no wrong way to meditate on top of a misty mountainside; rest assured!

Napa Valley Vineyards in California

If you’re a bit of a confessed wine snob and want to do nothing but chill out and drink some decent wine, then Napa Valley is the perfect destination for you. Here are the best distilleries in the US (Napa is one of them).

Napa Valley - Best Relaxing Destinations in USA winery-1588676_960_720

Located in the Northernmost part of the Golden State, there are so many wineries to choose from that you can’t possibly hit them all.

Napa Valley is gorgeous, and the vineyards make this a relaxing destination. Tours of vineyards, wine tastings, history of the wine-making process, the warm sun, and the intoxicating smell of grapes are enough to get anyone in a calmer state of mind.

The bonus is to sip on some delicious fermented grape juice as you enjoy the scenery.

Alaska — Anywhere, Really

At 570,641 total square miles, Alaska is the largest state in America.

It is one of the best places to see the Northern Lights .

With so much land, any place that you choose to visit is guaranteed to be quiet, peaceful, and breathtaking in its beauty.

The outdoorsy, thoughtful type would get the most from a visit to the Last Frontier.

In Alaska, the Stillpoint Lodge features a twenty-four-hour meditation space. You will have a great time with the scheduled or free-form meditation options.

With the way the lodge is set up, it works for groups or individuals.

There is no pressure to use a specific service, and spending most of your time in the organic garden isn’t uncommon. When visitors think of Alaska, the cold weather is the first thing on their minds.

It’s much more than that, with Stillpoint Lodge happily represented by the Kachemak Bay State Park. This is the only wilderness park in Alaska where you will find Halibut Cove.

You can explore the cold waters with an inflatable kayak and witness one-of-a-kind icebergs.

If the trip to the park seems a bit much, you can always take a scenic boat ride. You get the best weather possible when visiting Alaska during August and September.

Given its solitary nature and the great union you share with wildlife, Alaska is the ideal place to reflect on life and practice meditation.

This makes it a unique relaxation destination. Its sheer size and proximity to Mother Earth can remind you of the simple things in life and where you find the most happiness in yours.

Austin, Texas

Austin Texas Best Relaxing Destinations in USA austin-1402097_960_720

Travaasa is a paradise location located in Austin, TX, which is considered a great alternative to Hawaii. Making an itinerary filled with meditation, yoga, and relaxation doesn’t take long.

The spa services don’t get in the way of the location’s ambiance, as it seems to remain a thing on its own.

That’s important in more than one way and prevents frustration from dealing with ordinary ‘retreat’ bookings. Book at your convenience because there are no dedicated dates to lock in.

That makes Travaasa an excellent relaxation destination. The resort is only twenty minutes away from the city, so it works like a typical vacation.

You can always split time between relaxation and everyday activities in a pinch. More adventurous activities like canoeing are available, so Travaasa isn’t considered a one-trick pony.

Austin is a vibrant and bustling city full of unique attractions. If you’re planning to visit Austin , there are plenty of things to do while you’re in town.

Maine, New England

Maine is a very relaxed place on its own.

Maine - Best Relaxing Destinations in USA ocean-3833980_960_720

There exists the Rolling Meadows Retreat that adds to that by offering an intimate space that hosts up to eleven people.

This is an excellent choice for jobs that want to offer a retreat for workers in high-stress environments.

A social silence policy is in place once you’re settled and helps bridge the entire schedule.

There is yoga, free time, and encouragement to be more aware of your surroundings. Talking is permitted in guided sessions and, in total, can bring the entire experience circle.

A lot of the methods taught can be used in everyday life.

The instructors do an excellent job of making every minute count to your well-being. Visitors will find the retreat the best safe space after heavy testing, classes, and life stress.

Red Feather Lakes, Colorado

Shambhala is more than just a place to gather and clear your mind. Shambhala is a philosophy that speaks to those looking for peace in their life. Opposites can co-exist. By the way, Colorado is one of the top destinations for Spring Break for families .

As part of a six-hundred-acre retreat, the Shambhala Mountain Center is a great relaxation destination because it has diverse environments to meditate in.

Out of all the choices on the list, this one probably has the most programs available. No matter how many times you visit, there will always be something new to try.

Some popular programs are based on bestselling books or have a nature-based focus.

You can bring large groups of people and be assured that each person will have a different experience.

Tucson, Arizona

Tucson, Arizona, is one of the hottest places on the planet. With the desert, it can reach alarming temperatures with humidity.

But fortunately, it is a beautiful oasis to lower your stress levels to zero. Miraval uses proven techniques that prioritize health, rejuvenation, space, and unique experiences.

Going on a journey of self-discovery comes easily with the services provided by the Spa, making it a great relaxation destination.

1 . Travel with someone you know and love or

2. Travel single- A solo trip will allow you ample opportunities to meet new people, but there’s no one around for companionship when times get tough. If you’re traveling with your significant other, don’t forget about them while exploring the local nightlife! At least try not to.

3. Leave your cell phone – It can be difficult at first, but disconnecting from your cell phone can allow you a much-needed break. It’s hard to relax if you’re worried about work the entire time, and there are so many opportunities to have fun when technology is off – it’s excellent!

4. Limit your travel plan – There are so many attractions waiting to be explored when traveling; sometimes, without a solid plan, it’s easy for time to slip by. If you know what you want to see or do before leaving, try limiting yourself to maximize relaxation times.

5. Pack essentials only – After a long day of being on the go, it can feel good just relaxing in pajamas and a robe. By packing only necessities that provide comfort and relaxation, you don’t have to worry about anything besides sleeping and getting ready for the next day.

6. Take a yoga class – Yoga is arguably one of the best activities for your overall health, especially when practiced daily. Taking an occasional yoga class while on vacation can be extremely relaxing. If you’re not interested in joining an organized group, try it yourself! Google some “yoga poses” before leaving, and learn how to do each pose correctly. Once you arrive, take some time to relax by trying these poses in your hotel room or at the beach/park/local area with plenty of open space.

I've visited all 50 states solo. These are the 8 places I'd pick for a relaxing, low-key vacation.

  • After traveling solo to all 50 US states, I've found some great places to relax and unwind.
  • I love visiting coastal towns in California, Oregon, and Maine.
  • I also enjoy disconnecting in Taos, New Mexico, and Homer, Alaska.

Insider Today

Over the past decade, I've traveled to all 50 US states and spent time in tons of major cities and small towns. I've also driven solo across the country several times, stopping in some of the most unique and beautiful places the United States has to offer.

Although I love finding a heart-pumping adventure or bustling city to explore, there's nothing quite like a getaway meant for relaxation. Turns out I'm not alone in this thought, as more and more travelers gravitate toward relaxing getaways .

Although relaxation can sometimes be more of a state of mind than a physical place, some destinations I've visited have made it easier to embrace a low-key and laid-back attitude than others.

Here are eight places I'd recommend for a relaxing getaway.

California's Sonoma Coast is more tranquil than the state's touristy areas.

visit places relaxing

California's Sonoma Coast is home to some of the state's most dramatic scenery. With towering cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, rolling hills covered in vineyards, and ancient redwood forests, this is where I love to visit to simply immerse myself in nature.

Unlike the more touristy areas in Southern California , the beaches here are generally less crowded and more peaceful. I love to drive the coast to lunch in Bodega Bay, relax on the sand at Goat Rock Beach while listening to the sound of the waves, and enjoy the fresh ocean air.

Taos, New Mexico, is the perfect spot to unwind.

visit places relaxing

Taos, a small historic town in northern New Mexico, is the spot I always return to for a relaxing and low-key getaway.

Nestled amid the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Taos has some of the most breathtaking landscapes I've ever encountered and is the perfect spot to watch a sunrise or sunset.

I love spending a few nights in a short-term rental or a vintage camper reading, relaxing, and visiting nearby hot springs and art galleries.

It's easy to disconnect in Homer, Alaska.

visit places relaxing

Nestled on the tip of the Kenai Peninsula , Homer, Alaska, feels very peaceful and low-key.

The majestic mountains, glaciers peeking out in the distance, and stunning coastline dotted with islands make Homer visually stunning, with a charming downtown and opportunities to explore.

There are many outdoor-adventure opportunities here, but visitors can just as easily have a slower-paced vacation and truly disconnect.

Spend time exploring the coastline, take a scenic boat tour, and savor the local seafood — all with a tranquil view.

Pacific City, Oregon, offers a laid-back vibe with local shops, art galleries, and cafés.

visit places relaxing

The Oregon Coast, as a whole, is the perfect destination for a relaxing, low-key getaway, but one of my favorite spots is Pacific City.

This quaint spot with a laid-back vibe has lots of local shops, art galleries, friendly cafés, and local restaurants to keep me busy between trips to the magnificent coastline.

Home to Haystack Rock and the stunning Cape Kiwanda scenic headland, you don't have to go far to find the natural beauty. Many hotels and rentals in the area even offer ocean views.

Lake Toxaway is North Carolina's private hidden gem.

visit places relaxing

Located in North Carolina, Lake Toxaway is one of the most beautiful places you likely haven't heard of.

The stunning lake, surrounded by lush forests and rolling hills, is a true respite. With access granted only to homeowners, short-term renters, and guests at The Greystone Inn, the lake offers exceptional opportunities for rest.

Although there are opportunities for hiking, biking, and water sports, the beauty of Lake Toxaway is that you can do as much or as little as you please.

Avila Beach, California, is the perfect escape from California's big cities.

visit places relaxing

Avila Beach is my favorite spot in Central California. Located between Los Angeles and San Francisco, this community is the picture of relaxation.

The quaint enclave is an escape from California's big cities and offers a relaxed vibe and friendly atmosphere. Explore local shops and galleries, grab a cup of coffee and a pastry at a waterfront café, or indulge in fresh seafood at a harborside restaurant — all at a leisurely pace.

Avila Beach also has hot springs and wineries nearby, which make the perfect additions to any low-key getaway.

Carefree, Arizona, offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

visit places relaxing

With a name like Carefree, it's no surprise you'll find low-key tranquility in this Arizona town. Offering a unique combination of desert beauty, wellness opportunities, and proximity to the Phoenix metro area, it is the perfect place to unwind.

Carefree sits at the edge of the Sonoran Desert, offering a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, and has become a hub for wellness seekers.

Several well-known wellness resorts and spas are located either in town or nearby, offering amenities and opportunities for rest and relaxation.

Take a scenic hike through McDowell Sonoran Preserve, or simply relax by the pool at your resort, soaking up the Arizona sunshine.

Coastal Maine offers a breathtaking and relaxing escape.

visit places relaxing

No list of relaxing getaways would be complete without Coastal Maine. The rugged coastline of Maine, with its rocky cliffs, sandy beaches, and quaint harbor villages, offers a genuinely breathtaking and relaxing escape.

With many hidden coves and less-frequented stretches of sand, it's easy to find your own peaceful spot to soak up the sun, listen to the rhythm of the waves, and truly unwind.

Before a leisurely stroll along the coast, spend your days visiting the picturesque towns dotting the coastline and savoring fresh seafood and lobster rolls.

These destinations make traveling solo easy — and extra fun.

Traveling alone is all about freedom and independence — freedom to go where you want, when you want, and independence in your ability to visit new places and meet new people without the crutch of a travel companion. It's not for everyone, but those willing to venture off on their own are rewarded with a compromise-free vacation and unforgettable experiences. Exciting things just seem to happen when you're traveling solo.

But where to go? If you're just testing the waters of solo travel, you might want to stay close to home, which is where these U.S. destinations come in handy. Whether you dream of a spa vacation with plenty of time to relax and reset, a trip packed with activities, or a soul-searching expedition, these U.S. destinations cater to the solo traveler, thanks to their ease of transportation and large selection of things to do.

Ready to book your next solo trip? Read on for the best places to travel alone in the U.S.

Naples, Florida

If you have your heart set on a beach vacation, consider Naples, a relatively small community in southwest Florida. There are plenty of ways a solo beach traveler can occupy themselves in Naples. You can check out the beach at Naples Pier, go kayaking in the mangroves , or hit the links at one of the area's 90+ golf courses. If you're looking for an activity that will leave a big grin on your face, book a dolphin watching cruise from Marco Island , just 30 minutes south of Naples. Plus, the city was ranked number one in a recent list of safest places to live the U.S. , thanks to its low crime rates.

Boston, Massachusetts

Boston may be a big city, but it can often feel like a small town. Thanks to its walkability, you'll be able to explore the city's historic center on foot and can take the T, the local subway system, across the Charles River to Cambridge. In Boston, you'll find a wellspring of history and culture in museums like the fun Boston Tea Party Museum and the impressive Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum , the site of one of the world's most famous art heists.

Boulder, Colorado

Those looking for quiet solo travel in the U.S. can spend their days exploring the mountains and hills surrounding Boulder. Eldorado Canyon State Park is just 20 minutes south of downtown, the approximately two-mile trail up Flagstaff Mountain is just 15 minutes to the west, and the iconic Flatirons (red sandstone formations) are less than 10 minutes away by car. And If you're feeling social, head to Pearl Street Mall , a bustling pedestrian-only street with some of the city's best restaurants, shops, and bars.

Portland, Oregon

Not everyone feels comfortable eating out at a restaurant alone, especially when traveling solo, but Portland makes mealtime a nonissue, thanks to its bustling food cart scene. There are many food cart parks scattered about the city where you can go and peruse a diverse offering of cuisine, from pizza to Senegalese, and enjoy your meal in a atmospheric and fun shared space. Food aside, Portland's reliable transportation, great parks, and community vibe make this city an easy choice for people traveling alone. Between the good meals, you can also enjoy the tranquility of the Japanese Garden or browse the shelves at the famous Powell's Books .

Asheville, North Carolina

If your perfect vacation includes hiking and biking during the day and gulping down beers with new friends at night, there's arguably no better place than Asheville, a city situated in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains. Bikers will want to tackle the Blue Ridge Parkway , while hikers can head to the Craggy Pinnacle Trail (an approximately one-mile hike with serious views) or climb Mount Pisgah (2.6 miles round-trip). After a day in the mountains, reward yourself with a beer on the pup-friendly patio at Wicked Weed Brewing .

Sedona, Arizona

Traveling solo may be the only time you're able to truly check out from the grind and relax. That's why spa destinations like Sedona are so perfect for solo travelers. In addition to beautiful scenery, Sedona is packed with spas and wellness offerings. For a full resort experience, book a stay at the Amara Resort and Spa , or test out a few of the city's plentiful day spas: A Spa for You and Sedona's New Day Spa are long-standing favorites.

Charleston, South Carolina

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Art lovers will find themselves in their element in this colorful coastal city in South Carolina. The small city of Charleston is home to over 35 fine art galleries and hosts an Art Walk on the first Friday of every month. If you're hoping to make some art yourself, the French Quarter is sure to inspire, while the city's warm southern hospitality will make you feel right at home. If the temperature is right, you can even take a trip out to Isle of Palms to enjoy some quality time on the beach.

Nashville, Tennessee

If your idea of a dream solo trip is getting out and meeting new people, book a ticket to Nashville and let the city of music connect you to others. The Basement , a live music venue known for its cozy vibes and spacious patio, is a must, as is 3rd and Lindsley . Just don't leave the city without trying the spicy fried chicken at Hattie B's . A trip to Nashville is also a chance to try out one of its best hotels like the classic Hermitage Hotel.

Portland, Maine

This may be the second Portland on the list, but this one has a coastal advantage. From the seaside city you can hop on a ferry or boat charter, or eat your way through the city's best lobster rolls at Luke's Lobster . When you're not out enjoying the water or stuffing your face with deliciously fresh seafood, you can meander in and out of the shops and boutiques at the historic Old Port.

San Francisco, California

When you're traveling solo, public transportation is key (no one wants to foot the bill for a weekend full of Uber rides). That's where cities like San Francisco shine. Between Muni buses, trains, streetcars, and cable cars, you can get to every corner of the city without hopping in a cab. Surrounded by beautiful bay views and offering easy access to experience a Redwood forest in Muir Woods , there are plenty of things to do in and around San Francisco.

Bayfield, Wisconsin

Located on the shores of Lake Superior, and home to quaint B&Bs and beautiful Victorian homes, Bayfield is a warm and welcoming coastal destination and one of the loveliest small towns in the U.S. Solo travelers can roam the intimate downtown or head to the nearby Apostle Islands National Lakeshore , best known for its series of caves that freeze during the winter months.

Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

Just off California's iconic Highway 1 is Carmel-by-the-Sea, a small beach city on the Monterey Peninsula that will capture your heart the moment you see it. Traveling solo is no problem here, as the city offers plenty to do — surfing, sea animals, and a village-style center that feels like it belongs in a storybook. However, solo travelers may feel most at ease exploring the many art galleries like the Carmel Art Association and Bennett Sculpture .

Boise, Idaho

Boise is a paradise for lovers of the outdoors. Solo travelers will find riverside walking and biking trails that run right through town, skiing (in the winter) and hiking (in the summer) at the city's Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area , and easy access to mountain towns like McCall and ski areas like the rapidly growing Tamarack Resort .

Savannah, Georgia

 Marje/ Getty Images

Savannah's welcoming nature makes solo travel a breeze. If you're feeling social, join a haunted pub crawl through town or book an architectural tour . And if you're looking for a quiet escape, rent a bike and explore the history-rich city on two wheels. The best time to visit Savannah is in the fall and winter, when the temperatures are cooler and you can embrace the spooky spirit during Halloween when the city goes all out with on-theme activities .

Hot Springs, Arkansas

As you might guess, Hot Springs, Arkansas, is known for its natural hot springs, which have drawn visitors since the early 1900s. For solo travelers, there's nothing like a serene soak in the natural thermal waters found on the historic Bathhouse Row, followed by a refreshing drink of spring water and a lazy hike through the dense woods at Hot Springs National Park . In addition to the gorgeous scenery of the park, you can also discover it's unique history as a wellness destination .

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Jackson Hole may be home to a world-renowned ski area , mouthwatering cuisine, and high-end galleries, but you'll still find Old West-style bars where cowboys throw back PBRs (check out the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar ). It's the perfect place to throw on a Stetson and dress the part for a night or two. The town itself offers plenty to do when you're not drinking or skiing, like rodeo nights at the Jackson Hole Rodeo and incredible pastries at the James Beard-recognized Persephone Bakery .

Seattle, Washington

Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure

If you want access to nature without sacrificing big-city amenities, Seattle offers an ideal balance. Spend a couple of days checking out Pike Place Market (don't miss a cup of mac n' cheese from Beecher's ), going to the top of the Space Needle , and visiting the Museum of Pop Culture before hopping aboard a ferry and getting away from it all. From the heart of Seattle, you can take a boat across Elliott Bay to Bainbridge Island and onto Olympic National Park , home to both glacier-capped mountains and 70 miles of wild coastline.

Minneapolis, Minnesota

It's been said that one can hardly be called an architect if they haven't designed something in Minneapolis — the city showcases work from Jean Nouvel, Herzog & de Meuron, César Pelli, and Frank Gehry, among others. The city's love of design is also noticeable in the hotel scene, where sophistication meets Midwestern hospitality. So, while it's perfectly acceptable to wander through the city looking up, you don't want to miss a cruise on one of the famous bike paths, which wind past lakes that are perfect for a dip in the summertime.

Salt Lake City, Utah

It may be Utah's largest city, but Salt Lake City doesn't feel like a giant metropolis. Maybe it's the fact that it's surrounded by mountains or the open expanse of the Great Salt Lake and Antelope Island State Park to the west. Either way, this friendly city has everything a solo traveler could want — great food (check out Feldman's Deli ), plenty of sun-drenched days, and easy access to both the mountains and water. Among the many things to do in town, you will also have your pick of exciting day trips to nearby state parks, or you can use the city as a launchpad to explore Utah's stunning geology at national parks like Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon .

Fort Collins, Colorado

dlewis33/E+/Getty Images

If you're a beer lover, head to Fort Collins, a Colorado town with plenty of heart and really good beer. Start your tour of the city in the taproom of New Belgium Brewing (the company behind Fat Tire) and follow it with a pint at a few lesser-known breweries — we recommend Zwei Brewing Co. , Maxline Brewing , and Black Bottle Brewery . By the end of the day, you'll have your own beer-loving posse to explore the city with. Solo travelers will love the atmosphere of the downtown area, which is so charming it was the inspiration for Walt Disney when designing Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland.

Austin, Texas

The quickest way to bond with a stranger? Shared musical taste. Austin has plenty of opportunities to bump into fellow music lovers. Stay on or near South Congress Avenue, where trendy properties like the Hotel Magdalena provide the ideal base for visiting the street's iconic venues. Other ‘hoods you can easily get to include East Austin, booming with hipster bars and food trucks; South Lamar with its great shops; and Rainey Street, beloved among college students. Visit March through November to see the bats flying under the Ann W. Richards bridge — it's one of the best things to do in Austin , as is indulging in the city's incredible food.

Islamorada, Florida

Of all the towns in the Florida Keys , Islamorada has the homiest feel. Locals are happy to regale you with tales of family squabbles and fishing exploits at any of the seaside watering holes. For an elevated dining experience, snag a barstool at Chef Michael’s and order the whole lionfish. It's a big but manageable dish, made from an invasive species that Floridians pride themselves on removing from local waters and serving as a tasty dinner instead. When you're done, rest your head at one of the cozy cottages at Moorings Village.

Louisville, Kentucky

Kentucky is known for its hospitality and Louisville for its bourbon , meaning solo travelers can find good friends and good drinks while exploring this Southern city. NuLu is the most happening neighborhood, but Old Louisville is the place to hunker down if you’re a sucker for history and architecture. Downtown offers new hotels and inventive restaurants, while Butchertown and Germantown pair up-and-coming bars and businesses with impressive vintage architecture.

Marfa, Texas

Artists in search of a solitary life have been drawn to Marfa for decades. Today, the population hovers just under 2,000, but there’s enough art, food, and quirk for a city many times that size. El Cosmico offers outstanding glamping and communal spaces, while art houses like the Chinati Foundation keep visitors entertained. Though it's more than three hours from the closest airport, this flatland village offers progressive galleries, mystifying desert skies, and a sparse beauty that makes it one of the best small towns in Texas .

New York, New York

New York City might be full of crowds, but it’s also a welcoming hub for parties of one. There are sleek hotels with bars that draw worldly travelers and locals, some of the best art and shopping in the world, and more food and drink options than you can fit into a month-long trip. If you need help deciding what to do on your visit, take a look at our three-day weekend guide .

Portsmouth, New Hampshire

New Hampshire is one of the safest states in the country — and solo travelers wanting to enjoy that security will find a great home base in Portsmouth. This waterfront town is one of the state's most pedestrian-friendly communities, and with a colonial heritage that dates back to the 1600s, it's fantastic for history buffs. Portsmouth knows its food, as is perhaps best showcased in the dozen oyster farms active offshore in the Great Bay. Sample their best bivalves at The Franklin, an upscale seafood joint run by James Beard-nominated chef Matt Louis.

San Diego, California

San Diego combines the laid-back vibes of SoCal with the multicultural energy of a city located right on the Mexican border. From mild weather and great surfing to vibrant West Coast sunsets, it has lots to offer, making it a great place to spend a few days. Opportunities for hiking and watersports abound, while coastal areas like La Jolla and Del Mar offer a bevy of chic hotels where a solo traveler can catch some oceanside R&R.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Solo travelers in search of spiritual healing should look no further than Santa Fe . Book a night at Ten Thousand Waves, an upscale lodge inspired by Japanese hot spring resorts and decked out with secluded soaking tubs. Downtown, you’ll find historical landmarks, handmade tchotchkes, and restaurants serving delectable Southwestern food. Beyond the adobe architecture and unique attractions, the best thing you can do in Santa Fe is meet its colorful characters.

Washington, D.C.

Museums are best explored alone, and in Washington, D.C. , you have more than 20 to choose from—many of which are free. The District also has a hot food scene, and as a solo diner, you'll have the best shot at getting into the most highly coveted spots. To get far away from D.C.’s political crowds, head to a hip residential neighborhood like Shaw, where you can imbibe at Maxwell Park Wine Bar or catch a show at the Howard Theatre.

15 Best Places to Visit in Russia

Written by Diana Bocco Updated Mar 21, 2024

The largest country in the world really has it all–mountains, valleys, frozen lands, and warm sands, and an incredible number of amazing natural destinations to impress any visitor.

Some of the oldest cities in Russia, including Moscow and St. Petersburg , still retain their imperial splendor–obvious not only in their architecture but also in their majestic parks, shopping centers, and even metro stations.

Other cities and regions–including far-away destinations in Siberia and the Far East –offer a chance to explore things like the stunning beauty of the tundra and the Northern Lights , volcanoes, and more skiing than you could ever dream of.

From striking gilded palaces to vast natural spaces, take a look at our list of the best places to visit in Russia.

1. Lake Baikal

3. st. peterburg, 6. the russian tundra, 7. peterhof, 8. olkhon island, 9. petropavlovsk-kamchatsky, 10. vladivostok, 12. novosibirsk, 13. the taiga forest, 14. dargavs, 15. kizhi island, best time to visit russia.

Lake Baikal

When it comes to breaking records, Lake Baikal is hard to beat. This massive high-altitude rift lake in Siberia is the oldest and deepest lake in the world –reaching a maximum depth of 1,642 meters and an estimated 25 million years of age. Baikal is also the largest freshwater lake in the world–over 20 percent of the world's freshwater is in this lake.

Although Lake Baikal is considered one of the clearest lakes in the world , this is particularly noticeable in winter, where, in some areas, it's possible to see up to 40 meters down into the water–even though much of the lake's surface freezes over for up to five months of the year.

For about a month around August, the lake's water temperature can reach around 16 degrees Celsius, making it suitable for quick dips or short swims. During the rest of the year, however, it usually stays under five degrees Celsius.

In summer, Lake Baikal is a famous destination for kayaking, boat cruises, and island hopping to discover shorelines and beaches. In winter, when the lake freezes over, visitors can cross-country ski across sections of it and visit the frozen Tazheran Steppes caves.

Red Square in Moscow

Since most international flights arrive or at least stop in Moscow, it's worth planning your trip so you at least have a few hours to explore the city . Russia's capital is a magnificent mix of greenery, stunning architecture, and lots of historical reminders of times gone by.

Visitors to Moscow usually start exploring in the center, where the Kremlin , Red Square , and the colorful St. Basil's Cathedral are located. The shopping mall GUM , with its glass and steel roof, is also a popular destination–even for tourists who can't afford the luxury brands sold here–and a great place to try authentic Russian food.

Even if museums are not exactly your thing, Moscow has some amazing options worth visiting, including The State Tretyakov Gallery (which houses only Russian art); the Pushkin Museum (for more international collections); and the Kremlin Armory Museum for a look into some unique items, such as the ivory throne of Ivan the Terrible and gold-covered imperial carriages.

The Bolshoi Theater , one of the largest ballet and opera theaters in the world, is also worth a visit if you can get tickets.

Some of the best things in Moscow require some walking to be properly explored, such as the pedestrian-only shopping street Stary Arbat and the boardwalk along the River Moskva.

Moscow's Metro stations are works of art in themselves, decorated with porcelain relief, crystal chandeliers, and unique mosaic artworks that make these places basically look like subterranean palaces. Mayakovskaya metro station, with its ceiling mosaics and pink rhodonite columns, and Kiyevskaya station, filled with white marble, frescoes and elaborate artworks, are two of the most stunning ones to visit.

St. Petersburg

Although smaller than Moscow, St. Petersburg actually has so much to offer, it's often impossible to see it all in one day. Compared to Moscow, St. Petersburg feels more European–fine art and exquisite design details mixing in with history around every corner. You can explore it on foot to admire the architecture up close and personal, or hop on a cruise to explore part of the 300 kilometers of canals that cut through the imperial city.

For a stunning overdose of white and gold colors, visit Moika Palace (most famous for being the place where Rasputin was killed) and the Neoclassical, 19th-century St. Isaac's Cathedral , which is actually a Russian Orthodox museum.

The Hermitage Museum , perhaps St. Petersburg's most famous tourist attraction and the second largest art and culture museum in the world , has a collection of over three million items that cover everything from prehistoric art (including articles from the nomadic tribes in Altai) to Catherine the Great's art collection.

About 25 kilometers outside of St. Petersburg, and more than worth the day trip, is Peterhof Palace . Built in the early 1700s as a summer residence for Peter the Great, it greatly resembles the Palace of Versailles in France.

Horses in the Altay Mountains

The Altay Mountains in Siberia extend from Russia into China , Kazakhstan , and Mongolia . Traditionally inhabited by different ethnic groups involved in horse husbandry and forestry, it is also a very popular tourist destination for both locals and travelers. Together with a number of natural reserves and lakes, the Altay Mountains are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

There's a lot of untouched beauty in Altay, where frozen rivers and snowcapped mountains attract cross-country skiers and other outdoor lovers in winter, as well as hikers (the area around Aktru Glacier is especially popular for trekking), kayakers, and climbers in summer. More unusual activities, including diving, cave exploring, and herb and mushroom picking, can also be pursued here.

The Denisova Cave in Siberia is particularly significant because of the bone fragments, artifacts, and even prehistoric horses that have been here–some dating back 50,000 years.

The resort town of Belokurikha is a popular starting point for Altay adventures, and many tourism agencies offer organized trips from here.

Rosa Khutor ski resort

A summer beach resort town sitting right on the Black Sea , Sochi offers long stretches of pebble and sand beaches, imposing examples of Stalinist architecture, a summer film festival known as Kinotavr, and plenty of spas and outdoor markets to please all budgets and tastes. The longest river in Russia, Mzymta, cuts through Sochi before it empties into the Black Sea, and it's a very popular destination for rafting .

The 3000-square-kilometer Caucasian State Nature Biosphere Reserve , just 50 kilometers from Sochi, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to a number of unique species of flora and fauna, including the endangered Persian leopard.

The nearby Rosa Khutor ski resort is another favorite destination during winter and a world-class alpine skiing area –the 2014 Winter Olympic Games were hosted here.

The Russian tundra

The tundra is a unique biome that only exists in or near the Arctic Circle . Here, temperatures are so cold that trees can't grow, and only moss, shrubs, and certain types of grasses can get through the winter. In most places, the tundra is synonymous with permafrost–meaning the ground is permanently frozen. In areas where the top layer of ground does melt during summer, marshes, and streams will form over the land, leading to beautiful patches of colorful icy water.

The Russian tundra is home to polar bears, seals, gray wolves, and rich birdlife during nesting season. Over the past few decades, ecotourism has become more and more interested in the tundra areas, especially the Great Arctic State Nature Reserve near Krasnoyarsk Krai, where visitors can take a number of environmental routes to explore, try bird-watching, or visit as part of an educational tour.

The city of Murmansk , in the Kola Peninsula, not only offers incredible tundra views, but it's also a great place to catch a tour to see the Northern Lights .

Peterhof Palace

Peterhof might be home to a university and a major Russian watch manufacturer, but this relatively small city's call to fame is the Peterhof Palace . Originally designed and built in the early 1700s for Tsar Peter the Great in a style that resembles the Palace of Versailles, the palace grounds cover an area of almost 4000 hectares.

There are 173 garden fountains around the palace–some, like the Grand Cascade fountains , with special features that activate water jets when people get close. The lower gardens, designed in French formal style, offer marble statues, shaded walking paths, and even an aviary pavilion.

The Grand Palace itself is a masterpiece of architecture, with majestic colors (there are gold details everywhere), art imported from Asia and the Far East, walls covered in authentic Chinese silk, and a massive ballroom covered in gilded carvings. The palace contains 10 separate museums, which hold art, furniture, and palace items from the 18 th century.

Olkhon Island

One of the world's largest lake islands , Olkhon is covered in steep mountains, lush forests, and taiga. The island is in Eastern Siberia and has a small permanent population that consists mostly of local Buryats, a Mongolic indigenous group who believes the island to be a powerful spiritual place.

Tourism has become a growing industry on Olkhon Island, with visitors coming over to explore places such as the coastal sand dunes and the abandoned Peschanaya Village and former Soviet labor camp nearby.

This area is also famous for its "walking trees," an unusual phenomenon that causes strong winds to uncover tree roots on the beach and gives them the appearance of a standing person.

There are several semi-urban settlements on the island, with Khuzir being the largest and the one offering homestays for visitors who want to stay over. The village also houses the small but interesting National History Museum of Revyakin , which chronicles life on the island as far back as Neolithic times .

Snow-covered volcano in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

Located in the Russian Far East, the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is surrounded by volcanoes (including the active, snowcapped Koryakskaya Sopka volcano) and cannot be reached by road–in fact, the only way to get into the city is to fly in.

Those who take on the challenge and get here, however, will discover an active city center with tons of monuments, squares, and churches. The city lies right against Avacha Bay, a great place for a waterside stroll and to catch a whale watching tour .

Tours to the volcanoes should be at the top of your list if you visit here, but skiing on Krasnaya Sopka mountain and a visit to the world's only Museum of Salmon are also must-dos.

The small but unique Vulcanarium Museum here offers a unique insight into the world of volcanoes and probably your only chance ever to touch lava.

The Russky Bridge in Vladivostok

Located near the borders with China and North Korea and just across the ocean from Japan, Vladivostok is Russia's largest port city. A major stop on the Trans-Siberian Railway route, the city was actually off-limits to foreigners during Soviet Union times and now receives lots of foreign visitors eager to discover it.

The city is home to many parks and public spaces, including Sportivnaya Harbor with its beautiful beach and promenade, and the Eagle's Nest viewpoint at the top of a hill.

Vladivostok's Russky Bridge is a stunning architectural marvel and the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world at 1,885 meters. The bridge connects Vladivostok to Russky Island, where visitors will find Philippovsky Bay and its beautiful sandy beaches , as well as Voroshilov Battery, a military museum.

History buffs will appreciate a chance to explore the WWII C-56 Submarine or visit the Museum Vladivostok Fortress , originally built to protect the city against potential attacks from Japan.

Stony beach at Anapa

Anapa–perfectly located against the Black Sea and a very popular resort destination for decades–is well known for its sandy beaches, spas, and stunning views from the rocky promontory where Anapa's lighthouse sits. A somewhat more modest destination than Sochi, Anapa also offers plenty of other things to keep visitors entertained besides coastal attractions.

Places worth exploring include The Anapa Archaeological Museum and the single remaining gate of an Ottoman fort that once occupied this area. There's also the archaeological site of Gorgippia, which dates back to the 6th century BCE and was once a busy maritime trade port.

Both the Sukko Valley and the Wildlife Preserve of Bolshoy Utrish are just minutes away from the city and offer plenty of options to explore nature, swim in clear waters, and take to the trails for some trekking.

Bugrinsky Bridge in Novosibirsk

Located on the banks of the Ob River, Novosibirsk is the third-largest city in Russia and the unofficial capital of Siberia –a place where summers are hot enough to swim and sunbathe (Novosibirk has its own man-made beach on the shores of a reservoir), and the winters have temperatures that can reach -45 degrees Celsius.

Home to the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theater , a number of universities, and several museums, the city has much to offer visitors. The outdoor Museum for Railway Technology is particularly interesting, as it features many diesel and steam locomotives, electric trains, snowplows, and a number of unusual carriages, such as tank cars, hospital and prison cars, and even fire engines.

The Novosibirsk Trans-Siberian railway station is one of the largest ones in the country and it was once at the epicenter of the transport of prisoners to gulags (Soviet forced labor camps). Today, it is the main departing point for train adventures to nearby cities, including the town of Berdsk , on the shores of the Ob Sea–which is actually a man-made reservoir, not an actual sea.

Wolverines in the Russian taiga

The Russian taiga is a unique ecoregion that sits between the frozen tundra in the North and the more temperate mixed forests in the South. It's essentially a type of boreal forest where only coniferous trees like pines, spruces, and larches grow.

Parts of Alaska and Canada are covered in Taiga, too, but the Russian taiga brings a level of isolated beauty you won't find anywhere else. Here, temperatures can reach as low as -20 degrees Celsius, though the Siberian taiga can easily see nights of -50°C during the coldest months. In the north of the country, the taiga experiences the midnight sun in summer and polar night in winter.

The heart of the taiga is north of Irkutsk city, where dogsledding, snowshoeing, and the northern lights are waiting for you. Extreme tour operations take visitors to the area to spend days outdoors before warming up in a steam bath inside a wooden cabin, a local tradition.

Vodlozersky National Park falls within the Russian taiga. It covers over 4,000 square kilometers and is a popular destination for white water rafting and bird-watching. The park can only be reached via a countryside road from the town of Pudozh, 352 kilometers away. Once at the park, your only connection with civilization is the village of Kuganavolok , which has 500 permanent residents.

Cemetery in Dargavs

The tiny settlement of Dargavs, better known as "the city of the dead," has just over 150 permanent living residents – and at least just as many dead ones. Located near the Georgian border and only reachable after a remote and difficult one-hour drive, this tiny village is famous for its ancient cemetery.

Legend goes, the unusual cemetery – which consists of small stone buildings with serrated roofs sitting on a hill – was created in the 18th century as the final resting place for plague victims. Once infected, families would move into these "homes" with food and some personal items and stay there until (and after) their deaths. Today, visitors arrive here from all over the world to see the eerie but beautiful sight.

The closest major city is Vladikavkaz, an industrial town with plenty of cultural and historical sights that's also worth a visit.

Kizhi Island

Located in Lake Onega in northwestern Russia, this tiny, six-kilometer-long island has been inhabited since at least the 15th century.

The island's most famous sight is the Kizhi Pogost, an open-air museum with over 80 ancient wooden structures. The two 18th-century churches are especially stunning and have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site . They're also considered one of the most amazing and tallest wooden structures in Europe.

The main church is home to 22 silver domes (the tallest one being 37 meters) and a massive wooden altar, as well as 102 icons that decorate its walls. It was built using no nails and, legend goes, using only one axe. There is no other wooden structure in Russia built in a similar style.

To reach the island, visitors must take a picturesque ferry from the nearby city of Petrozavodsk. During summer, cruises take visitors around the lake before stopping at the island.

The best time to visit Russia depends on many factors: where you're going within the massive country, what you plan on doing when you land (hiking around Lake Baikal or touring museums in Moscow?) and just how willing you are to experience extreme weather.

If you're after savings, November and early Spring (especially March) are the cheaper months , but both are rainy and on the chilly side, with November feeling more like winter than fall.

Summer months are the most expensive months to arrive in Russia, when hotels are fully booked and flight prices skyrocket. Summer also means very hot temperatures, big crowds, and long lines to access museums or to catch a boat to tour the St. Petersburg canals.

If you plan on spending time outdoors, early fall is usually better than summer . Places like the Golden Ring (an area that extends north-east of Moscow) and Lake Baikal and the Ural Mountains are stunning in the fall, as the trees change color and a red hue takes over the entire region.

Most of the mountain trails are open in Autumn and the weather is perfect for long hikes. Lake Baikal is equally beautiful in winter, and the water looks a deep navy blue under the frozen surface, offering an incredible opportunity to skate right over the world's largest freshwater lake.

The best things to do and places to visit in Moscow, Russia

Updated On 14th October, 2021

While Moscow isn’t always at the top of everyone’s Europe bucket list , it’s certainly one of the best places to visit in Europe if you’re looking for a more alternative adventure! In this blog post I plan on sharing some of the free things to do in Moscow, as well as the best places to visit in Moscow, so that you can enjoy some of the best things to do in Russia!

Moscow, the capital of Russia, sits in the European part of the country. It’s an incredibly beautiful city, which I personally found to be more beautiful than Saint Petersburg (which is often people’s preference). The capital is certainly a lot busier, and less laid back than Saint Petersburg , but it’s a much more colourful and vibrant city, full of stunning and unique architecture.

Visiting famous landmarks such as The Kremlin and St Basil’s Cathedral, enjoying some of the green space in Gorky Park, watching a ballet in the Bolshoi Theatre… these are just a few reasons that you should visit Moscow! On top of that, because of visa restrictions (we’ll get onto that later), it’s also one of the most unique destinations in Europe.

There is a common misconception that Moscow is a dangerous city, but now that I’ve visited, I don’t believe this to be true. I would say the same rules apply here as to other large cities: avoid walking in dark areas alone at night, keep an eye on your belongings on public transport, and be streetwise. There’s no reason to avoid visiting this energetic city and miss out on these amazing things to do in Moscow!

It would take months if you wanted to truly explore Moscow because it’s a huge city, but I’m going to share some of my favourite things to do in Moscow and places to visit in Moscow so that you can prepare for your upcoming adventure! Even if you’re only there for a few days, you should be able to fit in these highlights from my trip.

Where is Moscow?

If you’re wondering ‘Where is Moscow, Russia?’ then you’ve come to the right place! Moscow in in west Russia, the European part, and it’s the capital city.

How do you get to Moscow?

Getting a visa for moscow:.

To get into Russia, you need to get a visa. The processing time is approximately 20 days, and you’ll need to have your fingerprints taken at a visa centre in London , Edinburgh or Manchester. You can find out more about getting a visa for Russia here.

Getting to Moscow:

Once you’ve got your visa, the easiest way to get to Moscow from the UK is by flying. Direct flights between London and Moscow take just under four hours, and with an airport layover you’re looking at a 6-7 hour trip. You can also fly in from many other major European and international cities.

16 best places to visit in Moscow...

1. st basil’s cathedral.

The most iconic building in Russia and one of the most iconic buildings in the world. St Basil’s Cathedral is one of the best places to visit in Moscow, if not the best!

St Basil’s is situated on Red Square, where you’ll also find many other popular places to visit in Moscow. In my opinion this still stands out against them all. There’s something about the multi coloured domes against the Moscow skyline that I found quite spectacular.

Although I’d already been in Russia for several days, it wasn’t until I was at this amazing piece of architecture that I really felt I was in Russia.

The cathedral was built by order of Ivan the Terrible, and apparently after the architect completed it, Ivan blinded him so that he could never build anything more beautiful. Whether or not this story is true, it certainly adds a bittersweet feeling as you stand admiring the beauty of St Basil’s Cathedral.

Inside is a museum displaying many historic items once used at the cathedral, which costs 700 rubles to enter. In my opinion it’s worth the entry fee, as simply seeing the ornate interior walls is a spectacle in itself.

2. The Kremlin

This historic fortress that sits on Red Square is probably the largest landmark and one of the most popular places to visit in Moscow. It’s the official residence of the President, although he doesn’t actually live there. It’s been rebuilt many times since it was first constructed in 1147 out of wood, before Ivan III the Great ordered it to be made from stone, which is the Kremlin you’ll recognise today.

The best things to do in Moscow: my favourite places to visit in Moscow

This place is huge, and there’s quite a lot to see. The first problem I had was finding where the entrance was. Even though I had a pre-booked ticket, I was then told I still had to visit the ticket office to exchange it for another ticket. I also needed my passport, so make sure you have yours if you plan to visit the Kremlin. After a lengthy queue I finally had a ticket I could use to enter the Kremlin, and had to go through security. The security here is thorough, so make sure you don’t take too much in with you. I had my pockets full, and it was a nightmare emptying them and explaining each item, before I was finally allowed in. Once inside you can pay for extra tickets to visit the various museums, however there’s also quite a lot to see simply on the grounds if you don’t want to spend too much.

See more tips for travelling on a budget here.

There’s so much to see here, including The Assumption Cathedral, Ivan the Great Bell Tower Complex, the Grand Kremlin Palace, the Armoury Chamber and Diamond Fund. There is also the Tsar Cannon (a huge artillery cannon), and the Tsar Bell. The Tsar Bell is the largest bell in the world. An incident with a fire and water being poured over the bell caused it to crack and for a slab to break off from it, which can now be seen propped up next to it.

The best things to do in Moscow: my favourite places to visit in Moscow

As you walk around the grounds you’ll hear the sound of whistles. The guards patrolling the area will blow a whistle at anyone walking where they shouldn’t. Even if it’s just on the grass, or towards more restricted areas. This can sometimes be funny to watch, as often the tourists will be in a world of their own whilst a guard is blowing a whistle at them. Sometimes a guard will be stood face to face with a tourist angrily blowing their whistle before the tourist realises they need to get back onto the main path.

This is perhaps one of the more unusual places to visit in Moscow! Gum is a huge department store situated on Red Square. It’s an interesting department store to walk around, with several levels, although the shops inside are certainly quite pricey. It’s a beautiful building when it’s lit up at night, and it seems to fit in nicely amongst the other famous sights on Red Square. Even if you don’t plan to buy anything here, one of the best things to do in Moscow is to take a quick look inside, although bear in mind there are usually security checks before entering.

4. State Historical Museum

The large crimson building on Red Square is now the State Historical Museum. It was originally the first pharmacy in Russia, and later a University before finally becoming the museum it is today.

Unfortunately I didn’t go inside as my time was limited and there was so much else I wanted to see, but if you have the time I think it would be one of the best things to do in Moscow. There are items dating back to the 6th century, and maybe even further. There’s also a library inside storing many ancient manuscripts and the largest coin collection in Russia.

The best things to do in Moscow: my favourite places to visit in Moscow

5. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi means big in Russian, so it roughly translates to large theatre. The Bolshoi Theatre is one of the foremost ballet companies in the world. The exterior of the building is an impressive sight, one of the most beautiful places to visit in Moscow, and it’s certainly worth admiring from the outside. There are guided tours of the interior, but if you really want to experience the theatre, one of the best things to do in Moscow is to watch a ballet here.

I was torn between booking a seat, but the ballets were very expensive. I’d have liked to have seen “Swan Lake”, (as at least I may have recognised some of the music). Unfortunately there were no performances on the days I was in Moscow, so I decided to pass. But if I return to Russia, then watching a ballet will be on my list of things to do.

6. Sparrow Hills

If you want a good view of the city, then Sparrow Hills is one of the best places to visit in Moscow. It’s a bit of a trek outside of the centre, but if you have the time then it offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of the busy city. There’s a viewing platform here which gives you fantastic panoramic views of Moscow.

Nearby you’ll see the magnificent Moscow State University building, which is one of the seven sisters of Moscow.

7. Seven Sisters

Whilst in Moscow, you’ll no doubt notice these magnificent soviet skyscrapers dotted around the city. At the time of construction they were the tallest buildings in Europe, Moscow State University being so until 1997. There are, as the name suggests, seven in total, which are: Hotel Ukraina, Kotelnicheskaya Embankment Apartments, the Kudrinskaya Square Building, the Hilton Moscow Leningradskaya Hotel, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Moscow State University, and the Red Gates Administrative Building.

If you visit Sparrow Hills, then you’ll come across Moscow State University, but I’m certain as you explore the city, you’ll see more of these giants against the Moscow skyline. One of the best things to do in Moscow is to see if you can locate all seven as you wander round the city!

The best things to do in Moscow: my favourite places to visit in Moscow

8. Nikolskaya Street

The start of this street is found by Red Square. It’s one of the most prominent pedestrianised streets in Moscow, filled with shops, restaurants and bars, so one of the best places to visit in Moscow if you’re looking for a bite to eat or some souvenirs!

What makes this street extra special are the thousands of bright lights in the sky above. After dark it looks simply magical with the many colourful lights overhead as you walk beneath them. One of the best things to do in Moscow is to visit Nikolskaya Street after dark and see them for yourself. It almost feels like Christmas in London!

There is another street nearby which also features similar lights, “Kuznetskiy Most”, which is also quite beautiful, but I thought “Nikolskaya Street” was ever slightly more impressive.

The best things to do in Moscow: my favourite places to visit in Moscow

9. Izmailovo Kremlin and Izmaylovskiy Bazar

Did you know that The Kremlin in Red Square is not the only Kremlin in Moscow? Kremlin actually means a type of fortress, so there are many in Russia.

The Izmailovo Kremlin is a fairly new addition to the city, having been built in 2007 as a cultural centre. With its multitude of colours and historic style, it has a real fairytale feel to it. There are several small museums here for you to explore, devoted to subjects such as Russian folk art, vodka and bread (yes, bread). Visiting these is definitely one of the more unique things to do in Moscow!

It’s a little way out of the centre, but it’s an interesting place to visit in Moscow to see something a little bit different, and it won’t be as overcrowded with tourists.

Next to the Izmailovo Kremlin is the best market in Moscow for souvenirs. You’ll find good and poor quality items, but you’ll certainly pick up a bargain if you take your time and haggle for a good price. Many of the items here you’ll get for half the price you would in souvenir shops in the city centre. It’s here that I picked up several Matryoshka dolls for a very good price. I think I’d have paid more than double, or possibly even triple if I’d have bought them elsewhere.

The best things to do in Moscow: my favourite places to visit in Moscow

10. Izmailovsky Park

Not too far from Izmailovo Kremlin you’ll find this huge park, one of the prettiest places to visit in Moscow. It’s easy to get lost here, so try to make sure you keep track of where you entered if you plan to go back the same way. There’s a lot to see in this park, a round pond, ferris wheel, playgrounds and sports grounds, shooting galleries, cinemas and a skate park.

There are often festivals, concerts and exhibitions at the park, on top of firework displays and dance parties.

The main reason I chose to visit the park was to find the painted trees. A local artist “Yevgenia Khlynina” has been painting on trees in this park, and one of the best things to do in Moscow is to explore the park looking for them. One of the most famous pieces of hers is the “Hedgehog in the Fog” from a famous soviet cartoon.

The best things to do in Moscow: my favourite places to visit in Moscow

11. Gorky Park

The most famous park in Moscow is named after the writer “Maxim Gorky”. Although it’s likely you’ve heard it mentioned in the song “Wind of Change” by “The Scorpions”.

There’s lots to do and see in the park with sports facilities and exhibitions. During the summer months this is one of the best places to visit if you’re looking for things to do in Moscow; there are often open air concerts and an open air cinema. There are many statues and sculptures in the park, including a small sculpture park area which features many interesting pieces.

One piece of advice: don’t visit Gorky Park or any other parks on 2nd August if you’re in Russia. 2nd August is Paratrooper day, which usually encourages a lot of drinking in the park, which is not always very welcoming.

The best things to do in Moscow: my favourite places to visit in Moscow

12. Arbat Street

One of the oldest and busiest streets in Moscow, and the most famous pedestrian street in the city. Arbat is one of the most popular places to visit in Moscow. There are several shops including many dedicated to souvenirs, but although these will have a good range of goods, they will be quite expensive . You may see street performers and buskers, and there are often poets reciting famous works, if not their own works.

It’s within walking distance from the Kremlin, which should only take around 10 minutes.

There are actually two streets with this name, Old Arbat Street and New Arbat Street. Old Arbat Street is where you’ll find the pedestrianised area. New Arbat Street is a separate street which runs alongside a main road, filled with many bars and restaurants.

The best things to do in Moscow: my favourite places to visit in Moscow

13. Metro station art

The best way to get around Moscow is by using the metro, and the metro is a tourist attraction in itself.

Although I obviously didn’t visit every metro station, I believe that every single station is unique in its own beautiful way. Many of the stations I passed through were impressive, quirky or simply jaw dropping. You’ll more than likely pass through many of them on the way to other sights, but I’d recommend the following:  Komsomolskaya, Novoslobodskaya, Mayakovskaya, Teatralnaya, Arbatskaya, Prospekt Mira and Ploschad Revolutsii (be sure to pet the dog statue for good luck).

There are of course many others for you to explore, but these are the ones I considered to be some of the most impressive places to visit in Moscow (even if they’re only metro stations!).

The best things to do in Moscow: my favourite places to visit in Moscow

VDNKh is an exhibition centre with many monuments and museums. Now that it’s combined with the Botanical Garden and Ostankino Park, one of the best things to do in Moscow is to spend the day at this recreational centre enjoying a mix of nature and culture. The most popular museum in the complex which you shouldn’t miss on your trip to Moscow is the Museum of Cosmonautics.

15. Lenin's Mausoleum

Despite requesting to be buried with his mum in St Petersburg, it is at the foot of the Kremlin on Red Sqaure that you will find Lenin’s Mausoleum, where Vladimir Ilych Lenin has been frozen in time since 1924. It’s only open for a few hours a few times per week. Photography is not allowed, and you should line up on the western corner of the square (near Alexander Garden) to wait you turn to see the embalmed body.

16. Novodevichy Convent

Novodevichy Convent, on the UNESCO World Heritage List, is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Moscow. Located south west of the centre you’ll find this stunning monastery. Inside you’ll find a cathedral and several churches, surrounded by high walls and 12 towers.
