Simple Flying

A guide to virgin australia's different fare types.

Take a pick to suit your needs: Lite, Choice, Flex, or Business

Do you enjoy paying for services that you don’t use? Probably not. This is why, to boost their competitiveness, airlines offer a range of fare types to suit the different needs of passengers: from “no-frills” tickets to those that come with premium offerings, to fares that offer maximum flexibility. One of two big players in Australia (the first being Qantas ), Virgin Australia gives its passengers a choice of four fare types.

Domestic services

  • Lite: Complimentary water, tea, and coffee are included in Lite fares. Food and other drinks are available for purchase onboard (the same applies for Choice and Flex tickets – more on this below). This “basic” ticket class doesn’t include checked baggage and seat selection, both of which can be separately purchased. On a Lite ticket, passengers are not eligible for UpgradeMe, an option to bid for an upgrade to business class.
  • Choice: This ticket class comes with one 50-lb (23-kg) checked baggage and the option to choose your seat. Unlike Lite, Choice guests are eligible for UpgradeMe. Passengers are also given the flexibility to reschedule their flight with no fee (just pay the fare difference) more than 14 days prior to scheduled departure.
  • Flex: In addition to the perks that come with Choice tickets, Flex fares offer a no-fee flight change up to right before the scheduled departure. Passengers are also eligible for UpgradeMe.
  • Business: This is the only fare type that includes food onboard. Baggage allowances are significantly more generous than other classes: a 31-lb (14-kg) carry-on and not one but two 70-lb (32-kg) checked bags. Business class passengers are also given access to the Virgin Australia Lounge and priority check-in, boarding, and baggage drop where available. Like Flex passengers, Business guests enjoy flexibility with no-fee flight changes.

International services

The offerings on international flights are similar to that of domestic services (though UpgradeMe isn’t an option), with the exception of:

  • Lite : This ticket is available only on short-haul international flights, with the same offerings as domestic routes. Long-haul flights do not have Lite fares.
  • Choice: Guests traveling on this fare type – with Virgin Australia Beyond, and Velocity Platinum or Gold membership – have access to partner lounges and priority check-in, boarding, and baggage drop. Onboard food is provided to all ticket classes on all long-haul flights, but Choice and Flex passengers flying on short-haul international routes will have to pay for this. Unlike domestic services, post-departure rescheduling is allowed for all long-haul flights but not international short-haul destinations.
  • Flex: Lounge access and priority perks are the same as Choice guests. While a fee must be paid for flight changes, it costs less than Choice and Business rescheduling charges. Flights cannot be rescheduled after the initial departure except on the Japan route , on which Flex passengers can reschedule post-departure at a fee of $500 AUD ($351) plus the fare difference.
  • Business: While lounge access is included, priority services are only offered on certain routes. Furthermore, passengers are not given no-fee flight changes, unlike with domestic services. Similar to Flex tickets, flights cannot be rescheduled after departure except on the Japan route, at $800 AUD ($562) plus the fare difference.

Note: because many of Virgin Australia’s international flights are interline operations , carry-on and checked baggage allowances depend on the operating airline.

Rocked by the sudden demise of Bonza, there is a Sunshine State-sized silver lining for passengers with a snap sale just announced.

Virgin has nestled into the gap left by Bonza going bust with a heap of deals into the Gold Coast.

A sale announced on Monday only applies to Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday flights to/from Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Canberra but for dates between June and December.

With no checked baggage included, fares start at $69 from Sydney to the Gold Coast. Melburnians can get to the Goldie for $85, Canberrans $89, and Adelaideans for $109. Those prices apply for flights in both directions, but the sale is only on from Monday until midnight Sunday, May 19.

Virgin is spruiking the sale as a midweek chance for a getaway from work.

Budget airline Bonza had its biggest footprint in the Sunshine State, and its voluntary administration is a win for Virgin as well as Qantas.

Bonza flew to 10 cities and towns in Queensland, and 10 combined in the Northern Territory, NSW, Victoria and Tasmania.

Gold Coast was a key hub for Bonza; it offered flights to the Gold Coast for less than $100 from Albury, Melbourne, and Launceston, plus even cheaper deals from regional Queensland cities.

But two weeks ago a former investment partner of the discount airline’s private equity owner repossessed Bonza’s planes.

Passengers are unlikely to get refunds, 300 staff have been stood down and the airline is in voluntary administration.

Bonza owes about $110m to trade creditors, landlords, staff, the Australian Taxation Office and plane lessors.

Qantas’ share price has risen as much as 6 per cent in the two weeks since Bonza went into administration.

Virgin Australia went into voluntary administration a few years ago but was purchased in 2020 for $3.5bn by a US private equity firm.

In October, it was reported the private equity firm could look to relist Virgin Australia on the ASX in 2024, but an initial public offering now looks unlikely.

Wild scenes took place across Aldi stores nationwide today after the German retailer dropped one of its biggest sales of the year.

Aussie travellers could score free flights with Qantas as the airline launches an incredible rewards program promotion.

With the tourism industry’s long slow slog out of the pandemic, airfares are tipped to drop this year for Aussies who can afford to travel.

Virgin Voyages free cruise winner says prize will cost her $8,000 in flights after Virgin ends Australian cruises

Images from Virgin free cruise promotion Instagram reel.

Morgan* won a cruise with Virgin Voyages — but cashing in on the trip would mean having to spend $8,000 on flights, more than the value of the original prize.

"We definitely don't love Virgin at the moment," she said.

"I think we feel pretty used to be honest."

Morgan won a twin share cruise in November last year.

She was flying Virgin Airlines to her home state of Tasmania after a work trip in Melbourne when she noticed something unusual at the departure gates.

"They had a lot of cameras around, there was dancing … they asked everybody to wear sailor hats when we boarded our flight."

Once on board, the air steward called Virgin boss Richard Branson on Facetime, who announced everybody had won a free Virgin Voyages Cruise.

"We were thrilled," Morgan said.

"Everyone around me was so excited."

Here is how Virgin promoted the event:

Cruise winner left high and dry

Morgan runs a small business, so gathering together savings and taking time away for a holiday for her and her partner is always tough.

"It was just nice … to get us through a bit of a tough year … to know at the end of the year we could take a break and have this free cruise," she said.

The couple used their prize to book a cruise out of Brisbane, but in February this year they were told all of Virgin's Australian cruises had been cancelled because of ongoing tensions in the Red Sea.

Morgan contacted Virgin's public relations team to see whether she could still redeem the prize and was told her only options were to take a cruise out of Europe or the Caribbean.

She discovered two return flights to the Caribbean would cost $8,000, more than the $7,000 value of original prize.

"When I clarified this with Virgin's PR team they stopped responding," she said.

Morgan said she is keen not to appear entitled but points out that "Virgin got precisely what they wanted; a massive amount of media coverage".

"We know this because people sent us messages from all over Australia saying they saw me on the news winning a cruise.

"It feels like they got all the benefits and we got nothing but cancellation fees."

Sir Richard Branson being relayed to Virgin passengers from a Facetime call.

The couple had to change the flights they booked to meet the cruise, at a cost of around $150.

"We were genuinely shocked, we thought Virgin would provide us with an alternative prize like a flight credit … or they would allow us to rebook on a later season," Morgan said.

"They sort of gave up on us … like 'you're a bit of a problem now'.

"It just feels very corporate for a brand that tries not to be very corporate."

A marketing strategy that works

Virgin "relies on winners to become brand ambassadors by sharing their stories with friends, family and social media followers," Dr Balkrushna Potdar, lecturer in marketing at the University of Tasmania, said.

A man in a suit looks at the camera.

Dr Potdar said while Virgin benefitted from showcasing winners, it was essential the company honoured promises made during the promotion.

He said with the cancellation of Australian cruises, Virgin should provide a replacement prize or compensation — if that doesn't happen, the company risks damage to its brand and people may lose trust in Virgin and see their marketing practice as deceptive.

"The winner's negative experience may become a cautionary tale dissuading potential customers from engaging with the brand," Dr Potdar said.

He said Virgin should consider some form of damage control including a "heartfelt apology" and an offer of compensation.

"This could include covering the cost of flights to Europe or the Caribbean, offering a free cruise credit, providing additional perks and benefits," he said.

Virgin apologises but said safety must come first

In a statement, a Virgin Australia Group spokesperson said "we apologise to our winners who can no longer redeem their prize due to the cancellation of Virgin Voyages' Australian and New Zealand cruises amid the conflict in the Red Sea".

The spokesperson said safety was always its priority.

"We are grateful that Virgin Voyages have offered all impacted guests the opportunity to take complimentary cruises on its other international sailings, including in Europe and the Caribbean."

The value of the replacement cruise is $10,500.

Morgan has described Virgin's response as "tone deaf".
