Our Original Founder & CoFOUNDER in 2017

Deah berry mitchell.

I'm a fulltime Black culture historian and  writer residing in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas.

A double graduate of Southern Methodist University, I enjoy traveling and immersing myself into other cultures. Currently pursuing my Ph.D. in history at the University of North Texas.

While vacationing in 2017, I had the idea to produce a bus tour that would combine my two passions: cuisine and local cultural history.

When I got back, I suggested to my friend and public relations manager, Dalila Thomas, that we partner together to produce this new concept.

In February 2018 we officially launched!

I relaunched the new and improved tours in April 2022 after pandemic restrictions were eased under my newly formed "umbrella" company - Nostalgia Black. Tourism is one of the services offered to amplify Black history and increase knowledge of cultural heritage and traditions. Currently pursuing my PhD in History, I am passionate about expanding our knowledge of local Black history.

I'm planning to expand into other test markets soon.

Wow!! What an amazing tour! The tour guides are VERY knowledgable about Dallas and its history! I am from Dallas and learned all kinds of hidden treasures. I LOVED this tour, and Im confident you wont be disappointed. I took my family and we continue raving our experience. To learn about Dallas, the migration of people, and so many exciting new things. This tour is a must do! We were fully engaged the entire time! I will highly recommend it to my friends and family. We bought our shirts (from the website) and will continue to support. We wish you continued success!

As a Dallas native, I thoroughly enjoyed the bus tour today learning more about African-American history and its economic impact on Dallas. There's a great deal of information that I failed to know that goes untold. Our contributions are often unrecognized, as now our educational system has proposed replacing the word "slavery" with "involuntary relocation" watering down its context of this time period. The wealth of knowledge shared would be ideal for local schools and students to acquire as a part of their curriculum studies. Hats off for the continuous education!

Went on a tour today and it was absolutely wonderful! The tour guides are a husband and wife duo who are professional, engaging and you can tell they truly enjoy what they do. I would recommend anyone to go on this tour. It is enlightening, enriching and educational tour that gives you a very thorough history of the impact that Black people have made not only in Dallas but the world. This tour is a gem!

We had an amazing and very enlightening time on this tour. Don and Jocelyn was very professional and the tour was so well orchestrated with the timelines of events. My mother and her sisters was on their annual sister trip and love that I picked this tour for them. I would recommend to anyone that wants to know the present of African America's in Dallas.

I took this tour with around 20 others in the spring of 2018. It highlights African American contributions to the history of the City of Dallas from the Civil War to present. Tour operator, Mr. Pinkard, is a 3rd generation Dallasite, himself, I believe. His thorough research of the many stories he tells throughout the almost 3 hour tour is astounding. He skillfully weaves his narrative with many personal accounts and our attention never wavered! The bus was clean, comfortable and professionally driven with on-board facilities. While some sites allowed for disembarking for a closer look (Freedman's Cemetery) young and old alike can enjoy this morning of learning! Tours are 1st Saturdays of the month. Book ahead and get more info on the website.

Just went on the tour today and I am amazed. I loved how they offered a private tour which was perfect for me and my time constraints in Dallas. The couple that own this company picked me up from my hotel with the private tour which made things easier for me since I didn't rent a car. I specifically sought out a tour that would give me the African American history of Dallas and I would highly recommend this tour. I would even recommend it for natives to Dallas. We also went to a soul food restaurant as part of the tour called Two Podners and I am happily stuffed.

Photo of Jayme H.

Don and Jocelyn took us on a beautiful and redemptive tour of African American history through the city of Dallas. We moved through different areas of the city, following the migration of black people from Freedmanstown to the Fair Park area. I deeply enjoyed the unique stories and experiences of the tour guides, as they are both Dallas natives. To see through the eyes of those that lived this recent and legacy filled history makes the experience richer and more tangible. Don shares stories of his childhood, and Jocelyn is a fount of insight and eye-opening facts along the way. Check their website for tour dates and mark off three hours to spend time with this beautiful couple and the pride they exude in showing others their Dallas.

Photo of Sam S.

I have lived in Dallas since 2004. But had never been exposed to Texas history or the experience of African Americans in Dallas. My partner booked us on the tour this past Saturday. What a great experience. I enjoyed touring the sites and was able to concentrate on the stories since I was not driving. It is a great experience and I encourage folks to put this on your list of things to do in Dallas. It was well worth it.

Photo of Eileen W.

I took the Dallas African American History tour as part of the Dallas Historical Society Historic City Tours program (but you can arrange the tours directly and sounds like groups of all sizes can be accommodated). I thoroughly enjoyed the tour, Don and Jocelyn are no only well-versed on Dallas African American history and Texas history, they are gracious hosts. The tour was very informative and the subject matter very well presented. I discovered historical sites I would never have found on my own and learned why the sites are significant from people who not only researched the history but lived some of it and/or have met people who have. Great tour!!!

Book Review:  1907

By appointment.

Based on my own wide-ranging research, we will be discussing Dallas in 1907.  Highland Park was just a twinkle in the developer’s eye; Neiman Marcus would have it’s opening day; prostitution and gambling were legal if you knew the right address; no plane had flown through the Dallas sky, but you would have seen a few early automobiles here and there.

Book Review:  Zephyr and Sarah

Zephyr Wright was a major player in the Civil Rights movement but you may not have ever heard her name.  She was the African American cook who had the ear of LBJ behind the scenes.  Many of her famous recipes are found in cookbooks attributed to Ladybird Johnson.  Sarah T Hughes was a trailblazing lawyer and judge who was specifically requested by Lyndon B Johnson for his swearing in.  Find out more about their radical lives.
