Join us on this trip to maximise your chances of witnessing Earth's most magnificent light show from outer space, the Aurora Borealis.

After meeting you in the centre of Tromsø, we will leave the city lights behind us and drive to where we expect the evening’s best weather conditions. On some nights this may lead us to the coast around Tromsø, on other nights we may drive all the way into Finland.

If conditions allow, we will choose a scenic spot and light a campfire. On some nights, the Aurora appears right away, on other nights we have to be patient. Sometimes we see a faint greenish line across the horizon, sometimes it’s a bucket full of colors dancing in the sky. The Northern Lights appear on most nights, but they are not always strong, which is why we recommend joining several chases to increase your chances of seeing a good show.

We will take pictures throughout the trip and share them with you the next morning. If you decide to bring your own camera, we will also help you set it up and teach you all you need to know to take home great shots of the Aurora and the stunning landscape around us.

Cloudy skies in Tromsø don’t scare us, as we usually find clear sky in nearby micro climates, which makes Tromsø the perfect base to start our adventure. small group for a more personal experience

I went out with this company a few times at the end of september/beginning of october 2022. While we have not been blessed by the best lights, and this is out of control of any company, I always had a great time. First, I think the group size is ideal. Of course the atmosphere will depend a lot on the other guests and how well you bond with them, in my case they had all been great. I hope they think the same about me :) Second, we were offered excellent home-made soup and cake among other things. I was told it was prepared by a real chef. And finally, we were with a very well-seasoned guide who perfectly knows the area, can explain how everything works, and entertained us while we were waiting for lights. I recommend that company if you want a more personal experience than with big companies and large groups.

Incredible night

Sarah was the driver and she was the guide who took us to a place in the middle of nothing to see the Northen Lights. She taught us how to take photos with our mobile phone and she took our photo with Northen Lights. Of course, there was a bondfire where we could keep warm and Sarah prepared our meal (soup, hot-dog - some vegetarian and hot chocolat. And in the end, we could enjoy a cake! Regarding Northern Lights chasing in Tromso. Big bus or small bus? A small bus has an advantage being able to get to more inaccessible locations. AMI tour provides a more personal service including a camp fire,hot dogs, soup etc. Importantly the AMI tour includes professional photography whereas big bus tours charge a lot more for photography separately. Great Northern Lights tour!

Sarah was an outstanding guide. She paid attention to her group’s needs and was enthusiastic about finding the lights and good places for viewing. Her experience finding active Northern Lights is superb. The soup and meal were good and very hot. We would definitely go on another tour with her. The price was cheaper than other companies, but the tour quality and service was more than that. Clean winter clothes and winter shoes were prepared according to size. The guide always responded kindly with a smile to various requests and questions. The weather was cloudy and the situation was not good, but in the end they found a good place to see the northern lights. He carefully took pictures with the camera several times, and after the tour was over, he corrected them and sent them to me. At the end of the trip a bonfire was made, but they prepared a variety of finger foods such as sausages, soups and cakes, so I could eat my fill. It's a new company, so I don't think it's been introduced in Korea yet, but I think it's a company that can definitely satisfy Korean travelers who are very picky and careful in every trip.

5 Best Tromso Northern Lights Tours + Important Things to Know Before Booking

I’ve now lived in Tromsø for two full northern lights seasons (late August to late March) and completely understand why Tromso northern lights tours are so popular. It’s certainly been magical getting to see the northern lights so often while living here. Sometimes I’ll be having a terrible day and grumpily take my dog Alfie out for a walk, but then I’ll look up and feel like the luckiest person in the world.

Quick Tromsø Travel Guide

Tromsø Accommodation: Thon Hotel Polar and Thon Hotel Tromsø across the street are both excellent options right in the city center, and the breakfast buffet is incredible. The fanciest hotel in town is the Clarion Hotel The Edge , which is right on the water and home to Tromsø’s only skybar. I’ve also written a full guide to the best Tromsø hotels here . 

Tromsø Activities Hostel is a great option if you’re on a tight budget. And if you want your own apartment, this glass roof loft near the center looks incredible. I don’t recommend booking an Airbnb in Tromsø.

Tromsø car rental:  Tromsø is surrounded by incredible nature, but public transport is sparse so I recommend renting a car, if you can. You can compare prices and book your Tromsø car rental at autoeurope.com .

Packing for Tromsø: You can find my  winter packing guide for Norway here . In general I would say focus on practical outdoors clothing – people dress very casually here, even when going out at night. Don’t forget some warm sweaters, even in the summer! 

When people ask me where in Norway to go to see the northern lights, I always recommend Tromsø first. Tromsø is a good place to see the northern lights because it lies so far above the Arctic Circle so the aurora activity is consistently high, but it’s also on the coast, which means that the temperatures are a lot warmer than other places this high above the Arctic Circle. 

That said, there are some things to know if you are planning a Tromsø northern lights trip. Yes, we see the aurora a lot here, but downtown Tromsø isn’t the best place in Norway to see the northern lights, so if you want to see them you’ll need to take a northern lights tour in Tromsø, or drive out on your own. Ideally you want to be somewhere really dark, away from city lights to see the aurora. You can often still see the northern lights in the Tromsø city center, however whenever we get a really spectacular lights show here I secretly wish I were in the countryside where it would look even more incredible.

This is why a lot of people coming for the northern lights sign up for a Tromsø northern lights tour that will take them away from the city lights (and hopefully towards clear skies), which is a fantastic option. Then during the day you can explore downtown. Tromsø is a great little city with lots of cafes, galleries, museums, shops, restaurants, and bars to keep you interested when the northern lights aren’t out. If you don’t want to sign up for a bunch of northern lights tours from Tromsø, you could also spend a few nights in the countryside. If you’re comfortable renting a car, I would consider flying into Tromsø and then leaving the city to stay somewhere darker. 

Best month to see the northern lights

And if you’re wondering when is the best time to see the northern lights in Tromsø, you will have good chances of seeing them from September to the beginning of April. Personally February and March are my favorite months for northern lights in Tromsø, because there’s snow on the ground and the sun has returned so you can enjoy your days a bit more as well. But if you hate the cold I definitely recommend visiting in September or October, as the weather is more tolerable for nights spent outside watching the sky. 

Best Tromso northern lights tours

If you do choose to stay in Tromsø, you’ll definitely want to book at least a couple northern lights tours. In fact even when my parents visited me here I booked them on a tour instead of driving them out myself. Northern lights tours usually include heavy duty outdoor winter clothing, which is super helpful on those freezing cold nights, especially if you’re traveling from somewhere warmer. Guides are also in contact with each other so they can more effectively scout for the lights than you could on your own.

An added benefit of taking a northern lights tour is that most guides are trained in northern lights photography so usually the tour will include a photo of you under the northern lights (my parents were so pleased with the photos they got)! And tours also often include tripods so that you can try to take photos on your own camera too. While your phone can capture basic northern lights photos, you’ll need a tripod to take sharp northern lights photos because of the long exposures necessary in the dark.

There are so many northern lights tours running out of Tromsø, and to be honest they’re all pretty similar. I would just try to look for a long tour, where your guide will be willing to drive out to Sweden or Finland if necessary to find clear skies. And if your heart is really set on seeing the northern lights, I would absolutely book tours on multiple nights.

You can book northern lights tours on Manawa , GetYourGuide , or Viator . They all offer excellent and reliable service, but my personal favorite is Manawa as the tours tend to be a tiny bit cheaper through them and I love supporting a smaller company.

These would be my top picks for the five best northern lights tours from Tromsø:

Cheapest Tromsø Northern Lights Tour

If you want the cheapest option for a northern lights bus chase, this 5 hour northern lights minibus tour is your best bet. It’s a bit cheaper than other tours because it only takes you to the neighboring island of Kvaløya to chase the northern lights, not  all the way to Sweden or Finland if necessary. 

I don’t think this is the very best tour option, but if you’re on a budget it’s still an excellent choice. You get a professional guide to find the best location to spot the northern lights, a warm thermal suit to wear, and tripods for your cameras. 

You can cancel up to 4 days in advance for a full refund, and if the tour is canceled due to bad weather you can reschedule or get your money back. 

Best Tromsø Northern Lights Tour

If you’re willing to spend a bit more money, this minibus tour would be ideal. This is the tour my parents did and they loved it.

This tour will drive all the way to Finland if necessary to find clear skies, and they provide a thermal suit, a hot meal and beverages, and a campfire.

The guide will take professional photos of you under the northern lights, but I love that they also bring tripods for your camera if you want to try your own hand at photographing the northern lights! Your guide will help you with all the photo settings so that you can capture the aurora yourself. 

This all inclusive northern lights chase minibus tour is offered by a different company and isn’t the exact one my parents did, but it looks very similar and is a bit cheaper! 

And if you want something more exclusive, this Tesla tour  is even smaller and still provides photos and a tripod to use. 

Husky Northern Lights Excursion

Northern lights tours can definitely be a bit disappointing if you don’t manage to see the aurora, so I love the idea of doing a fun activity outside at night so you’ll have a chance of spotting the northern lights but also a great time even if you don’t see the aurora.

This evening husky visit looks so much fun and will give you lots of chances of seeing the northern lights. You’ll get to play with the huskies and then have dinner around a campfire while waiting for the northern lights to appear. 

I wouldn’t recommend this as your only northern lights tour in Tromsø, as you’ll be staying in one location so you won’t have as high chances of seeing the northern lights as if you were chasing them in a bus. But the huskies are so much fun, so if you like dogs I would highly recommend this as a second tour for one of your other nights in Tromsø! 

Reindeer sleigh ride under the Northern Lights in Tromsø

If dogs aren’t your thing, maybe you would prefer to hang out with some reindeer in Tromsø?  This evening reindeer sleigh ride looks absolutely magical. I did the daytime version of this tour and  loved it. Again, I wouldn’t recommend this as your primary northern lights tour in Tromsø, but this would be an excellent option as a second tour to book. 

This northern lights sailing excursion is actually the cheapest northern lights tour in Tromsø.

Sailing is a big part of life in Tromsø – I even know some students here who live on sailboats to save money on rent. So this is a great opportunity to get out on the water while here! Your chances of seeing the northern lights will be a bit lower as skies tend to be clearer inland. And it’s hard to photograph the northern lights on a moving boat, because you need to keep your camera still for several seconds.

But if you’re lucky, seeing the northern lights dancing over the water is one of the most extraordinary experiences I’ve had!

I also highly recommend filling your days with other fun activities to ensure that you have the best visit to Tromsø, even if you end up unlucky and don’t get to see the northern lights. 

Whale watching from Tromsø

From roughly November through January, you can see humpback whales and killer whales, or orcas, near Tromsø. The time they arrive does vary each year, as well as where you can see them. But luckily for you there are several Tromsø whale safari companies that send boats out to see the whales, wherever they may be (though of course whale sightings cannot be guaranteed). 

If you want to stay on a warm boat the entire time, then  this silent whale watching tour on an electric boat  is perfect, and lasts around eight hours (depending on where the whales are) for optimal whale sighting chances. 

And if you’re feeling adventurous and want to see the whales up close,  this boat/RIB whale watching tour  takes you to the whales on a boat but then you switch to a RIB when you’re near the whales. 

Or if you want a full Arctic experience, this overnight Ice Domes tour includes an evening snowshoe hike, a night in the famous Tromsø Ice Domes, and a morning dogsledding tour.

Dog sledding in Tromsø

For best chances of snow I would do this in January, February, or March, but sometimes there will be enough snow on the ground in November and December for husky sledding. And then if there isn’t enough snow, some companies will take out carts with wheels instead.

There are lots of different husky sledding tours offered from Tromsø  which you can find here , but I recommend going with the Tromsø Wilderness Center. I know several people who have adopted retired huskies from the Wilderness Center and they offer really great care to the dogs when they aren’t working.

This husky excursion is perfect for beginners. Or that one is sold out this dog sledding excursion two hours from Tromsø might have availability.

Reindeer in Tromsø

One of the fun things about living in Tromsø is that there are a lot of reindeer roaming outside the city!

Of course the best way to see some reindeer is to visit a reindeer camp.  This reindeer excursion takes you just 30 minutes from the Tromsø center to feed reindeer, learn about Sami culture, and even take a short reindeer sleigh ride. But personally I prefer this reindeer tour , which takes you out to the gorgeous Lyngen Alps. It is a bit longer of a drive but one of the most beautiful areas outside of Tromsø. They also offer  an evening reindeer sleigh ride  where you’ll have the chance to see the northern lights. 

Cross-country skiing

You can rent cross-country skis at  Tromsø Outdoor  right downtown (I believe rentals are 340 kroner for adults), but if you’ve never been on cross-country skis before you might prefer to go with a guide instead.  This guided cross-country skiing Tromsø tour  includes all the equipment, a ski lesson, hot drinks, and lunch.

Snowmobiling

Snowmobiling is incredibly popular here, and it’s certainly a lot of fun. If you want to experience snowmobiling for yourself there are a bunch of  snowmobile tours offered out of Tromsø here . 

Tromsø accommodation

Tromsø has so many wonderful hotels, so you’ll have lots of options here. I’ve stayed at the Thon Hotel Polar and loved it, and my parents usually stay at the Thon Hotel Tromsø across the street, which is just as wonderful.

But everyone I’ve asked in Tromsø seems to agree that the nicest hotel in town is the Clarion Hotel The Edge. The Edge is right on the water and is home to Tromsø’s only skybar. My parents have also stayed here and loved it. Check current rates and availability here

And then if you are willing to stay outside of Tromsø, here are my top picks for the best places to see the northern lights in Norway (some of which won’t require a car):

Sommarøy & Kvaløya

If you want to spend some time in Tromsø but don’t mind renting a car, I recommend staying outside of the city and driving in for a visit during the day. This way you’ll be in the right place when the lights do come out, but you can still have a bit of city experience as well. You can compare prices and book your rental at autoeurope.com .

Kvaløya, the island next to Tromsø, is a wonderful option because it’s only about a half hour drive from Tromsø, but will have dark skies and beautiful landscapes perfect for northern lights viewing.

You could book a cabin here and then drive into Tromsø during the day, though you’ll probably want to spend most of your time here because it’s beautiful. This cabin would be perfect, or this is a great budget option .

Or if you venture a bit farther you could stay on Sommarøy, which is absolutely stunning and one of my favorite places near Tromsø. The Sommarøy Arctic Hotel has a bunch of accommodation options for different budgets, including gorgeous seaside cabins.

The Lyngen Alps is my favorite mountain getaway from Tromsø and just so happens to be home to two of my favorite northern lights hotels in Norway: the glass igloos at North Experience Basecamp  and the mini Aurora Fjord Cabins .

When my friends wanted to plan a winter trip to Tromsø a few years ago I convinced them to go to the island of Senja instead. Senja has stunning mountains, lots of winter activities on offer, and it’s the perfect place to watch for the northern lights. Read more about our trip to Senja here .

I hadn’t actually hear of the island of Dyrøy before my visit to Senja, but we decided to add it onto our itinerary and it ended up being my favorite part of our trip. Dyrøy has incredible mountain views, and the owners of the cabin we stayed at were so wonderful. Plus we got to soak in a hot tub under the northern lights.

Vesterålen & Lofoten

Vesterålen and Lofoten are two archipelagos about a six hour drive south of Tromsø. You won’t get the highest chances of seeing the northern lights here as the weather can be really crazy, but the landscape might be incredible enough to make up for that.

I would say that choosing Vesterålen or Lofoten for your northern lights trip will be a bit of a gamble, but the scenery is so beautiful and there’s so much to do here that you will definitely have an unforgettable trip, aurora or no aurora. Alta is a small city of about 19,000 people so it doesn’t have much light pollution, but it’s a big tourist hub for Arctic tours and activities so you’ll find a lot to do here when you aren’t watching the northern lights. This is great because there’s always a chance you’ll be unlucky with the aurora and not get to see any northern lights, but if you fill your days with other fun activities you’ll have an amazing trip regardless.

The best northern lights accommodation is somewhere with a clear roof or at least very big windows, so you can watch for the lights in comfort (and warmth!). This is why I really love Arctic Domes, and the Arctic Dome at Glød Explorer is perfect because you don’t even need a car to visit. You can fly into Alta and they’ll pick you up at the airport. Arctic Dome in Kokelv

The Arctic Dome in Kokelv might just be my favorite place I’ve stayed on a northern lights trip in Norway. The dome is perfect for northern lights viewing – I actually had a lot of trouble going to sleep here because the lights kept appearing above my bed. The dome sits at the top of a hill so you’ll get a full, unobstructed view of the sky, and a stay here also comes with a Sami style turf house with a fully equipped kitchen, shower, and sauna.

Kokelv is about a two hour drive from Alta so you’ll definitely need a car for this one, so I do think that Glød Explorer in Alta is a more convenient option. Read more about staying at the Arctic Dome in Kokelv here .

Kirkenes is one of my favorite towns in northern Norway. It’s right by the borders to both Finland and Russia, which I feel like gives it a really interesting vibe, but also offers excellent northern lights viewing opportunities because it’s easy to drive inland where the skies are usually less cloudy.

And you can even stay in an igloo hotel here !

And then if you want a true Arctic adventure, you have to go to Svalbard! Svalbard’s towns are the northernmost permanently inhabited spots on the planet (aside from a few research bases), and the archipelago is actually closer to the North Pole than to Oslo. Oh and Svalbard is one of the only places where you can see the daytime northern lights!

I was really surprised how easy it is to visit Svalbard – there are quite cheap flights from Oslo and Tromsø. Read more about planning a trip to Svalbard here .

I really like the idea of those long northern lights tours. I mean, as well as seeing the northern lights I love the idea of travelling accross the artic to Sweden and Finland. I think, that is exciting me as much as the idea of seeing the northern lights.

And besides Tromso, I will visit Alta and Nordkap as well, is it possible to drive ? Since some of my frepiends say it is possible but have to do convoy with other cars and must check the schedule, is it true ?

If you’re in the north for a week you should have good chances of seeing the northern lights, especially if you take a couple of northern lights tours that will chase clear skies. You can absolutely drive to Alta and the North Cape as well. We only have to drive in a convoy if there’s a big snow storm, but that is quite rare, so you should be fine.

There are glass igloos at Lyngen North, which is a three hour drive from Tromsø. I think they can arrange transport if you’re not renting a car.

No, it is too light at the end of April to see the northern lights – you can only see them when the sky is dark, which no longer happens by then.

February is a really busy time – sometimes all the hotels and restaurants in town book out too – so I would definitely book a tour in advance. A lot of them allow cancellation if necessary.

I wonder if I could ask you to check our itinerary and recommend the most appropriate of your guides to support my brother and me for a trip in early March 2024. • 1st Gatwick to Tromso gets in 23.40! • Hire SUV at airport – we are experienced drivers • Drive to Sommaroy? Sommarøy is a long drive from Tromsø, so I would stay your first night in Tromsø instead. I don’t think you will be able to climb Reinebringen in March yet as there will likely be snow – at least you definitely wouldn’t want to attempt the hike if there is snow. I would honestly skip Abisko – it’s too big of a detour and the drive isn’t that spectacular. Instead I would maybe stop through Vesterålen ( https://www.heartmybackpack.com/norway/vesteralen-whales-reindeer/ ) on your way to Senja, or spend an extra night in Senja. The rest looks great, if you don’t mind the long drives!

It’s a pity the ferry is not operating between Vesteralen and Senja in the winter. Also I would guess that its not be best time for whale watching. We will stay in Thon on your recommendation.

I think you should be fine booking the flights hotel and activities yourself. Just make sure to book everything well in advance, as northern lights season is very busy and everything does book up.

Quite an informative article, really helped us clear a lot of doubts. It’s my wife’s b’day in November, and so we were wondering if it is a good time to plan a trip to Norway to witness the northern lights. Have been reading that it is cloudy during Nov and it can be difficult to spot the lights? How true do you suggest that is?

The weather in Norway is always changing, so there is truly no month with better chances of clear skies. My advice is to book a tour that will drive you for hours in search of clear skies. I think November is a great time to visit!

‍ Tromsø is one of the best place in the world to see the Northern Lights. Tromsø is located right in the middle of the so-called Aurora Oval, which means that we can see the Aurora even when the activity is low. 

On this tour you will be accompanied by our best northern lights guide and a certified driver in a warm comfortable bus. 5 Best Tromso Northern Lights Tours [+ Your Questions Answered!]

Going on one of these Tromso northern lights tours is perhaps one of the most popular activity for people visiting Norway, and is something I highly recommend. Even though I have grown up in Norway and seen the northern lights quite often, I never stop being mesmerised by how beautiful they are.

If you are visiting Norway in the winter, and your goal is to see the northern lights, chances are you are heading to Tromsø (or Tromso, if you don’t have the Norwegian ‘ø’ on your keyboard).

Tromsø is, for many people, one of the top destinations in Norway for seeing the northern lights! Whilst there are many other places in Norway that are great for seeing them (such as Alta and Lofoten ), Tromsø is definitely the best destination in Norway for northern lights tours .

The stunning Auroras are not to be missed, and with some of these tours you are almost guaranteed to see them. In fact, a lot of them come with a “northern lights guarantee” – which I’ll explain more about later.

Quick Tromsø Travel Guide

Where to stay : Tromsø is a small and walkable city, so you’ll find that there are lots of hotels close to the city center. My personal favourites are Clarion The Edge , the Scandic Ishavshotel and the Radisson . Most northern lights tours will actually pick you up from outside the latter two (the hotels are right across the street from each other). More budget-friendly accommodation includes the Tromsø Activities Hostel and the Comfort Xpress . I’ve written a guide to my favourite hotels in Tromsø here .

Where to eat : I have many favourite restaurants in Tromsø, and am particularly fond of La Famiglia (Italian), Restaurant Lotus (international) and Bardus Bistro (Norwegian). I have heard great things about Restaurant Skirri as well (seafood). All are within walking distance in the city center. For after-dinner drinks, the Tromso Ice Bar is a fun experience.

Guide : The Best Things to do in Tromsø

Packing for Tromsø : Tromsø is a popular winter destination in Norway, and packing for Norway in winter is no joke. Think layers, layers, layers – and always wear a thin layer of wool underneath your clothing on the coldest days.

Getting to the city center : If you are flying into Tromsø airport (TOS), you can book a private transfer to your hotel in advance here . Alternatively, the airport express bus leaves several times a day, and is usually timed with the arrivals.

Seeing the northern lights from Tromsø

There are a few things you should be aware of when it comes to seeing the northern lights in Tromsø (or from Tromsø, if you are going on an aurora tour).

Firstly, know that seeing the northern lights is heavily affected by two things: the strength of the Aurora Borealis themselves and the weather.

By this I mean that in order to see them in the first place, the rays coming from the sun (aka the northern lights or Auroras) need to be strong enough for you to be able to see them with your eyes.

Often, the northern lights are not strong enough for this, but a camera is able to pick them up. I have covered photographing the northern lights with a GoPro and even with a smartphone in the past, and it is easier than you think.

Since Tromsø is so far north, this gives you a good chance of seeing them, even when they are not that strong.

What you need to know before you go

The northern lights are measured by a KP index (all around the world), going from 0 (low) to 9 (extremely high).

In Tromsø, you can see the northern lights even when the KP index is as low as 1, which is pretty incredible.

Next up, the weather. It should come as no surprise that even with a KP index of 4 and above (which is considered pretty good), if it is a cloudy night, you won’t be able to see the northern lights. So always pay attention to the weather forecast as well as the Aurora forecast.

In addition to the KP index and the weather, light pollution can also affect how clearly you see the northern lights. All though Tromsø is not a huge city, and so it is possible to see the northern lights from the city (I loved seeing them from the rooftop bar at the Edge hotel ), it is always better to leave the city.

Regardless of where in northern Norway you go to see the northern lights, there are certain times of year that are better than others.

Obviously, the darker months are the best months to see the northern lights in Tromsø (and the rest of Norway), with December to February being ideal . This is also when you will find that there are more Tromsø northern lights tours available to choose from, as it is the peak season to experience northern lights.

There are several ways to find out what the best time to see the northern lights in Norway is, and my general advice is to look at the historic weather forecast for the city you are considering and the time of year and number of daylight hours.

Other activities not to miss in Tromsø (with a chance of northern lights)

Of course, there are so many great things to do in Tromsø , and not all are related to the northern lights. Personally, I love traveling in northern Norway , not just for the nature, but for the culture and amount of bucket-list activities to find there.

Therefore, I wanted to highlight some of those activities for you guys, so you can make the most of your trip to Tromsø.

Walking tour

Tromsø is a very walkable city, and so joining a walking tour to get an idea of where to find everything on your first day is a must. That way, you get the lay of the land quickly – in addition to learning about the city!

This 2,5-hour walking tour takes you around the main sights of the city with a local guide, and includes a visit to the Polar Museum. It is a fun, family-friendly way to get to know the city when you have just arrived.

Additionally, it’s a great daytime activity (since the northern lights tours are all in the evening).

The Cable Car

Of course, the Tromsø cable car ( Fjellheisen ), taking you up to the Storsteinen mountain cannot be missed. This is probably the most popular activity in the city, offering amazing views of everything down below (such as the beautiful Tromsø bridge and the Arctic Cathedral).

At the top you will find some hiking trails, a cafe with great lunch options, and of course, the best views in town. The return ticket is open-ended, so you can decide how long you want to spend up top.

Top tip : on a clear night, heading up to the mountain top with the cable car can be a great way to see the northern lights in Tromsø without joining a tour!

Sami Experience (with reindeer sledding)

Last, but not least, you simply cannot visit Tromsø without learning about the Sami people and their culture. The indigenous people of Norway, Finland, Sweden (and parts of Russia) have such a unique culture, and learning about their heritage was one of my favourite things I did in Tromsø.

When you book this excursion , you are taken out of the city center to a Sami reindeer farm, where you will not only get to meet and feed the reindeer, but after a nice Sami meal (the traditional Bidos ) you gather in the lavvo (Sami tent) to listen to stories and learn even more.

When I did this, the two young girls telling stories were absolutely incredible, answering every single (silly) question from our group. I learned so much, even as a Norwegian who had some knowledge of the Sami before I went.

I couldn’t recommend this excursion enough – especially because it is a Sami run family business. Book it in advance here.

From ice caves to Indigenous reindeer tours: 10 unique experiences to have in Norway

Norwegians love nature, and being outdoors year-round is a way of life. They believe you can enjoy outdoor activities no matter the weather — as long as you wear the proper clothing. This is especially true in the winter when the temperatures in northern Norway dip into the single digits (or below zero if you’re measuring in Celsius). 

From late April through August, the polar Arctic experiences what is called the “midnight sun.” Due to the tilt of the Earth, these places see sunlight 24 hours a day. This phenomenon occurs in most of northern Norway during the summer, which can make it hard to feel tired and go to sleep. On the other hand, it also makes Norway a very unique travel destination.

I was able to experience the midnight sun on a recent trip to Svalbard, Norway — an archipelago that sits at 78 degrees north and is the most northern inhabited year-round settlement on the planet. 

Even if you’re not as far north as Svalbard, places like Lofoten and Tromso can have 18 to 24 hours of daylight, depending on the month of the year. The benefit is that you won’t have to worry about having enough daylight hours to fit in all of your activities. Kayaking at 10 p.m.? Hiking at midnight? All possible.

With that outdoor stage set, here’s a selection of unique activities — some of which are seasonal — that you can experience on your next trip to Norway.

Dog sledding

Dog sledding with professional musher Tove Sørensen absolutely makes my list of best activities in Norway.

Tove has owned Tromso Villmarkssenter for the last 30 years. With more than 200 huskies, Tove doesn’t just run dog sledding tours, though. She and her dogs have competed in the Finnmarkslopet (Europe’s longest race) 19 times, and she hopes to be the first woman to finish the race 20 times. She’s also competed in the world’s longest dogsled race, the Iditarod in Alaska.

Guided tours are available, followed by lunch in Husky Cafe, where you can taste Norwegian delicacies and warm up by the fire. 

Sami reindeer experience in Tromso

The Indigenous Sami population are reindeer herders. Eight years ago, Johan Isak Turi Oskal started Tromso Arctic Reindeer to educate the public about the Sami culture and reindeer’s importance in the natural environment. His family has been herding reindeer for generations, and he feeds the reindeer in the winter months from November to April. In the summer, they migrate up to the mountains to give birth to their calves.

Tours can include everything from feeding and sledding with reindeer, viewing northern lights and having a campfire cookout while joiking (traditional Sami singing).

Chase the northern lights

While in Norway, you can chase the northern lights on a tour with Tromso Accessible Tours .

They break down barriers for travelers of all abilities and aim to make adventure tours accessible to everyone. Martin Lobert started his tour company during the pandemic to fill a void in the local tourism industry. He purchased a wheelchair-accessible van that can hold up to four wheelchairs and provides “skis” for the wheels. This way, visitors can glide over the snow to reach previously inaccessible areas.

Another vehicle can fit up to 16 passengers total or two wheelchairs plus 12 additional passengers for larger families or groups traveling together.

Experience Norwegian fishing history and culture

You can experience Norwegian fishing history and culture at Full Steam in Tromso . The former fish factory from 1902 sits on the waterfront and has been turned into a restaurant and maritime museum.

Here you can learn about the region’s maritime history, the Sami culture and fishing heritage. You can also enjoy fresh Arctic cod or a warm bowl of bidos — a traditional Sami stew of rich, tender reindeer meat and vegetables such as carrots and potatoes. And yes, it is delicious.

Fly to the northernmost airport in the world

For a unique aviation experience, fly into the northernmost airport in the world, Svalbard Airport (LYR). Norwegian Air offers daily flights from Tromso and Oslo to the northernmost airport in the world for commercial aviation. Flying over the northern Arctic and seeing snow-covered glaciers from above is beautiful.

But flying there is only part of the experience — stay a few nights in the area to enjoy outdoor activities in a breathtaking location.

Electric snowmobiling

Experience an EV snowmobiling adventure on Svalbard with Hurtigruten Adventures, which offers snowmobile tours on electric snowmobiles .

As snowmobiles are the main mode of transport on the island, this is an important step toward reducing emissions and the accompanying noise that disturbs wildlife. On one of these snowmobiling adventures, you could encounter everything from puffins to Arctic reindeer to polar bears.

Take a cross-country skiing tour

Explore the frozen wonderland of the Spitsbergen on skis by taking a half-day cross-country skiing guided tour, or go all in on a four-day adventure . No matter how experienced you are on skis, you’ll want a guide who knows the local area and carries polar bear protection. In fact, it’s required — you cannot venture out of the immediate Longyearbyen settlement without an experienced guide and/or a gun.

Visit an ice cave

Visit a 1,000-year-old ice cave on Svalbard. This unique activity is offered seasonally from February through May. You can be transported in a snowcat — a heavy-duty snow vehicle —  up the mountain to an ice cave high above Longyearbyen. From there, you’ll descend on foot into the glacial opening and through a tight corridor made of ice thousands of years old. 

Cruise along the coast

Cruise the Norwegian coastline with Hurtigruten. The line has been offering cruises up the Norwegian coast for more than 150 years; it offers cruises to many ports along the coast and up to Svalbard. From ships of 150 to 619 passengers, you’ll take in the majestic scenery as you travel through the fjords and into small fishing ports. The ships double as supply vessels for smaller communities bringing supplies and medicine to locals.

Drink a beer at the top of the world

Drink an IPA with brewmaster Andreas Hegermann-Riis at the northernmost brewery in the world. Svalbard Brewery was started in 2015 by Robert and Anne Grete Johansen and prides itself on brewing IPAs at the top of the world. Due to the nature of laws in Svalbard and its history as a coal-mining community, there are limits on alcohol consumption and purchases (if local).

Residents are issued a card for any purchases made in Svalbard. Visitors can show their flight tickets to purchase up to 24 beer cans. Tours of the brewery are available, and you can book them online .
