Triund Trek: The Only Guide You’ll Ever Need For Triund

Table of contents.

Triund Trek- the most sought-after trek in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, India.

Three reasons-

  • It’s an easy and short trek. It can be easily done over a weekend.
  • Accessibility of the trek. Triund is in Dharamshala; Dharamshala is very well connected by road and air, and the starting point of the trek (Gallu Devi) is also easily accessible by road.
  • This👇

Triund Trek

The above three reasons all together make it a perfect weekend getaway destination, especially for North India.

Triund Trek

Triund trek is one of the easiest and DIY Himalayan trek. It’s in Dharamshala, near Mcleodganj, Himachal Pradesh, India.

It’s easy because there’s a well-defined route to reach the Triund top. The trail goes through the woods of Oak trees, Pine, Deodar, and Rhododendron. The trail offers you a picturesque view of the spectacular Kangra valley on the one side and the mighty snow-covered Dhauladhar range on the other side.

You also get to see the birds’ eye view of the whole Kangra district and HPCA cricket stadium (the most beautiful cricket stadium of India). The trail offers absolutely stunning views.

View of Indrahar pass

However, the trail is always crammed with people. As I have told you, it’s the most sought after trek in North India and makes an ideal weekend getaway destination.

Now, let’s talk about Triund trek in detail.

Note : At the time of writing this, I am living in Bhagsunag village (one of the nearby villages to Triund) for the last six months, and in this much time, I’ve been to Triund 4-5 times. That means I know about Triund very well and writing this complete guide from a locals point of the eye.

For any sort of help regarding Triund trek, feel free to comment, email, or you can also WhatsApp me. You’ll find the whatsApp number in the last of the post.

Triund Trek Height

  • The height of the triund trek is 2850m; 9000 ft.
  • The height of the snowline (4 km ahead from Triund) is 3350m; 10000ft.

Triund Trek Difficulty Level

It’s a one size fits all type of trek. The Triund trek has got something for everybody; a first-timer, a beginner, and a veteran.

You may find the last stretch of the trail a bit challenging. It’s also famously known as ’22 curves’ as it has 22 tiring curves that you’ve to cross before you reach the Triund top.

Honestly, I never felt it challenging. Maybe because of my fitness; I run daily. But some people do find it difficult.

Triund Trek Distance

  • Gallu Devi (the starting point of the trek) to Triund distance: 7 Km
  • Mcleodganj to Triund distance: 9 km
  • Dharamshala to Triund distance: 18-20 km

Triund Trek Length

It depends on, where do you start the trek.

  • Gallu Devi – 7km (the usual and the official route)
  • Bhagsunag via Henni village – 7 km
  • Bhagsunag waterfall via Karthani – 6 km

Best Time For Triund Trek

  • The best time for Triund is from April to June , and October to December .

Note : Don’t do the Triund trek in the rainy season. It rains heavily here in Dharamshala. In winter, the route gets closed because Triund receives heavy snowfall.

Triund Trek Route

There are three routes to go to Triund:

  •   Gallu Devi – It’s the official one. All the tourists take this route only. You’ll also find the tour guide here only.
  • Bhagsunag Village – Locals and nearby villagers, take this route and also some tourists those who are aware of this route. This route goes through the Heini village of upper Bhagsu, and after some distance, it gets adjoined to the usual Gallu Devi route. The trail is not well defined, so the chances are you may get lost.
  • Bhagsunag waterfall – This trail is very steep and goes through dense forests. It’s advisable not to trek through this route without any local guide.

Triund Trek Timings

  • 07:00 am – 11:30 am

After 11:30 AM, It’s not allowed to go because you won’t be able to come back the same day; the night stay at Triund is prohibited.

  • It’s mostly cold here.

You know how the weather behaves in the mountains. Its bright sunny and then in a whip it will start raining.

Triund Night Stay

  • Overnight camping and staying at the hilltop of Triund is not allowed at any cost.

Irresponsible travel leads to this ban. Please, travel sustainably .

At Gallu Devi (the starting point of the trek), officials take your identity proof and record your name and details to make sure you return the same day.

Triund Trek Cost

  • 1000- 1500 INR per person

The tour guide charges a minimum of 1000 rupees per person. It’s not a fixed rate. Use your bargaining skills here.

PedalThrottle Recommendation: Ditch them and ping me. I’ll connect you to an amazing, sincere local tour guide and that too at the cheapest rate compared to all the Triund packages out there. The only condition is that you need to be a minimum of four people and promise to leave no trash on the trail.

Triund Trek Package

I have to be honest here.

I genuinely don’t want you to opt for any packages provided by these irresponsible travel companies. By choosing these travel companies, you’re indirectly harming the ecosystem, and anyway, they charge you a lot more than the reasonable rate.

Before you decide to go with any of the travel company, ask them about their company’s environmental and responsible tourism policies. Choose only those who support responsible tourism.

FYI : The ban on overnight camping at Triund top got imposed last year only. The travel companies and we are equally responsible for this. It’s good that its banned now.

Last year on New Year’s Eve, there were more than 2000 people at Triund. Can you imagine the negative impacts of this? At such a height, where would all waste go?

Locals tell that there was nothing but tissues, bottles, sanitary pads, and plastic bottles.

Please be a responsible traveler.

Take all your trash back to the city where it can be appropriately decomposed and also don’t bring any speaker. I don’t understand what’s need to come in nature to listen to songs, you can do that in your room.

Locals also tell that earlier, there used to be a lot of songbirds. Now it’s just water bottles and Lays packets.

PedalThrottle recommendation: Hire any local tour guide from the nearby village. I’ll help you with that.

Why should you go with a local tour guide instead of a company?

  • Locals care about their place, the environment more than the tourists, and any other travel company. Their intention is never just to make money.
  • They’ll tell you lovely stories about the place as it’s their native place. Who can be a better person than locals to talk about their place?
  • They’re always willing to go the extra mile for you to make your experience memorable.  Like a travel company, they never want to just get rich off of you.
  • By choosing them, you support their livelihood.

Don't be one among the massive crowds to Triund.

Here is a quieter, short trek near Manali: the Bijli Mahadev Trek. Click here to view the trek.

The Complete Guide to Triund Trek

Triund trek is one of the most popular treks to go over a weekend from Delhi and Chandigarh. It is perhaps the easiest Himalayan trek to do on your own.

With breathtaking views of the Kangra valley and the snow-covered Dhauladhar ranges, it is also very picturesque.

Triund is the ideal destination for those seeking a hassle-free taste of trekking in the Himalayas. The trek can easily be done over a weekend.

The trail to Triund is short but steep. The steep climb is well-compensated by refreshing walks amongst rhododendron and oak trees. There are also various songbirds in the forests along the trail which make it a birdwatcher’s delight.

Considering it's an easy trek and with the effortless accessibility from Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj, there are a large number of trekkers who go this trek, making it difficult to enjoy the serenity of the place and can get crowded on top during the weekends or holiday season. It is better to experience the beauty of this trek during the weekdays.

The town of McLeod Ganj (also known as little Lhasa) also provides for a grand opportunity to experience the vibrant Tibetan culture.

There are many places to explore like going all the way to the snow line, the Lakha Cave, and for more experienced trekkers over multiple days, going to Indrahar Pass.

➤ Trail Information

Dharamkot is your base to start the trek of Triund. You can also start the trek from McLeodganj itself, or from two other villages close by- Bhagsu and Gallu. The trail from Dharamkot however is arguably the nicer one as it climbs through a thick crown of pine forests.

The trek has been divided into two days in the trek documentation.

Day 1: Dharamkot to Triund

Trek Distance: 5.45 km Trek Duration: 4 hours GPS Coordinates of Dharamkot: 32°14'55.98"N, 76°19'31.55"E GPS Coordinates of Triund Campsite: 32° 15' 42.084''N, 76° 21' 15.732''E

Start the trek as early as possible. The first half of the trek up faces the sun and the sun in the mountains can be very harsh later in the day.

Get to the water tank near the government primary school at Dharamkot. Next to the water tank, there is a trail that climbs up through a forest. Walk up along this trail for about half an hour to get to the Galu temple clearing. There’s a small tea shop here, just below the shrine.

From here, one trail goes south-west into the forest to the village of Naddi. Another forest trail goes north-west to the stream that descends from Laka. The main trail to Triund continues straight past the small shrine.

Tip: There is an option of taking a cab all the way from McLeod Ganj to Gallu Devi temple. For a vehicle, you will be charged for Rs 500 once you reach the Gallu Devi temple, you will see the trekking trail with the forest checkpoint. There are no charges to be paid. However, your id card is important and your details will be logged into a book.

Your backpack will also be checked for the amount of plastic you are carrying and will be checked again while you return back. Ensure you carry them back and trek responsibly.

The trail is a gently rising one, through dense oak forests and traverses the steep side of the Laka ridge. As you move ahead the trail is a deep gully that traverses a steep section and emerges on a rocky spur.

The main Dhauladhar range comes into view here with the pyramidal peak of Mun appearing larger than life. This entire stretch is perfect for birdwatchers, as these forests are home to various kinds of songbirds.

You also have the railings at multiple places on the trek along with a few dhabas/cafés serving tea and packaged food on the trek. There are about 22 bends on the trek or the climb.

At around the halfway point you reach magic view café. From here the trail gets steeper.

The trail continues through a series of switchbacks and climbs to the Triund ridge through dense thickets of rhododendron and oak trees.

The last couple of switchbacks bring you out of the rhododendrons and out onto the Triund ridge. It’s an open grassy ridge that stretches a good kilometer to the south before plunging into the Kangra valley.

There are plenty of places to camp here, you could even get some provisions at the tea shops here.

During winter, watch out when the trail gets covered with snow. Picture by Yashas Garg

Water is scarce and is available close to 1 km before Triund. It is highly advisable to carry your own supply of drinking water up here.

During the trekking season, there are many dhabas at Triund where you can get a cooked meal and refreshments. Instead of buying any packaged food, it is better to pack food from Dharamkot which won't get spoilt. You can stay overnight at the forest rest house at Triund, by doing an advance booking at Dharamshala. The accommodation here is reasonable, costing around Rs 600 to Rs 800 for a room.

If you are short on time you can also head back to Dharamkot on Day 1 itself, making the round trip to Triund in a single day. You’ll miss out on the lovely views of the evening and morning sky from Triund, but it is possible to return before it gets dark provided you start early.

Descend by retracing your steps along the path you came up with. Coming down should take a lot less time than it took to climb up. It’s a short day so enjoy the walk and stop by at the cafes enroute.

Conversely, if you have the time you can ascend further from Triund to Lahesh cave via Laka. Lahesh cave serves as the base camp for the climb to Indrahar pass (14,250 ft).

There is a tea house at Laka, but you will have to carry your own supplies if venturing further. It is possible to go up to Lahesh cave and descend back to Dharamkot the same day.

To reach Majnu Ka Tila, you need to go to Vishwa Vidyalaya metro station on the yellow line. Take an auto from the metro station which will cost about Rs 50 to reach Majnu Ka Tila.

There are private buses directly to Dharamshala leaving during the late evening, starting from 6 pm. It takes about 10 to 11 hours to reach McLeod Ganj.

The second option is to take the bus from ISBT Kashmir gate.

Buses usually cost about Rs 600 to Rs 800 for a non-AC one and about Rs 1200 to 1500 for an ACbus. You can book your tickets online from HRTC which are your most reliable buses.

Reaching Triund by Public Transport System from Chandigarh

If you are traveling from Chandigarh, you get direct buses from Chandigarh ISBT to McLeod Ganj.

You get overnight buses from Chandigarh ISBT (sector 43). the cost will be Rs 600 to 800 for a Volvo bus. It takes about 6 hours to reach McLeod Ganj from Chandigarh.

You can book the bus online from redbus or HRTC .

➤ Is Triund Trek Difficut

Triund trek is perhaps one of the easiest treks to do in the Himalayas and can be done on your own if you are going from the trail starting from the Gallu Devi temple.

There are no difficult sections as such but note down a few things to keep in mind while trekking.

  • Trekking on the sections where rocks, boulders can be slippery. Make sure you wear proper trekking shoes and carry trekking poles on the trek.
  • If you are trekking from the alternative route of the Bagsu waterfalls, you need to be careful about sections that are steeper and very slippery. This is not a popular route which first-time trekkers take.

➤ How To Get Fit For Triund trek

Triund trek is classified as an Easy grade trek. Though the trek is easy, there is a good altitude gain of 3,000 feet. The continuous ascent can be quite demanding for people who lead a sedentary lifestyle.

Here’s a guide to help you get fit for an Easy trek in 4 weeks .

Cardiovascular Endurance

In case you’re just starting with a fitness routine, start slow and increase your pace every day in the following manner:

  • Target completing a brisk walk of 5 km in 50 minutes when you begin.
  • Gradually increase your pace by walking 5 km, 3 times a week.
  • As you become more comfortable, introduce jogging in your routine.
  • Progressively increase the distance you jog in a workout until you can complete 5 km in 45 mins.

If you prefer cycling over running, target covering 12 km in 60 minutes when you begin.

  • Progressively increase your pace to cover 15 km in one hour.

Strength Training

This is an important area you need to work on.

Strength training is equally important to trek comfortably. Work on your glutes, calves, and knees. Additionally, work on strengthening your core.

You must strengthen your core muscles. for strengthening your core muscles, holding a plank and it’s variations (elbow, side planks) are the best exercises to go about doing it.

Also, try these exercises for strength - target 4 sets of squats with 20 in each set.

  • Squats (Mix it up with sumo squats)
  • Lunges (Forward, backward and lateral lunges)

Flexibility

Flexibility determines the amount of movement your bones can make in any direction around joints such as shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees.

It is an aspect that will help you trek comfortably. carrying a backpack, however, light can become a strain. stretching your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors, and lower back muscles regularly promote relaxation in the tissues reducing the strain on your back.

If you can’t go out and jog because of time and space constraints, here’s a video you can use to work out indoors.

➤ Temperatures On Triund Trek

Depending on the season you are going to trek, the temperatures will vary.

If you are trekking during the summer season, you can expect the day temperatures to be around 16 to 25 degrees. During the night, it can drop to 7 to 10 degrees.

Post-monsoon and the months approaching winters (september to december), you can expect the temperatures to start dropping. The day temperatures will be fairly pleasant at about 14 to 18 degrees. at night time, it can drop to 1 to 5 degrees.

Triund Trek: A Face-Off With The Dhauladhar Range

' src=

The trek up to Triund hill was the tail end event of the entire Himachal backpacking trip. An Unknown path, steep and rocky trail, blind trust in google maps, with nothing but an intuitive sense of direction, an impending deadline, and unexplainable love for mountains. It was a perfect recipe for an adventure. And when it comes to adventures, I am game for it, come what may. Looking back at that trek, it reminds of these beautiful yet lasting words by James Baldwin.

And once you realize that you can do something, it would be difficult to live with yourself if you didn’t do it. James Baldwin, The Paris Review.

There is something with climbing mountains that I simply can’t give up on (read the description of the Instagram post below to know what). climbing mountains gave so much satisfaction that it’s very difficult to live with myself if I didn’t. Especially when you can see the peak challenging you from the window of your hostel, I simply can’t tuck myself under the blanket.

View this post on Instagram Why do you have to trek sir, That busy mind of mine keeps asking me. Why do you have to take the pain And climb huge mountains Why do you have to take the pain To cross slippery rocks Why do you have to take the pain To walk alongside dangerous ridges With a sigh, I reply!! Those huge mountains, Represent the huge challenges I have set for myself Those slippery rocks Represent the pitfalls in my plans The dangerous ridges represent The risks you gotta take to complete the challenges. But above all, Trekking teaches you one thing Really Really well. That is to always, always take One step at a time. No more no less. Just One Step. And soon you'll find yourself On top of the summit. P.S. So, it was the last circuit of the Himachal Backpacking trip with my friends. After a whirlwind trip from Delhi to Kasol and flying high in Bir Billing, we landed in Mcleodganj after what seemed like a grueling journey. The last few days have been intense, hectic and what not. But the moment I put my foot down at Mcleodganj the snow-capped mountains of Dhauladhar range allured me. My whole purpose of adding Mcleodganj to the itinerary was to get a little closer to those massifs. So, I asked my friends if they were up for the trek. All but Hithesh and Santhosh said no. Understandably so.

The choice for me, however, was obvious. I looked at the massifs and gave a thumbs up, “Challenge Accepted and you shall be scaled”. The others planned to explore the Dharamshala the following day. Read on to know all about my experience of the Triund Trek.

Table of Contents

We knew we were up for a challenge. The trek was 8 KM one way. We were planning to go via the Bhagsunag waterfall. This trail was the only option left other than the one from Gallu Devi which was 10 KM one way. The problem, however, was that the trail through Bhagsunag Waterfalls wasn’t very clear on maps or the ground. On top of that, we had a bus to catch in the evening, to reach Delhi. So, we had to start early, be alert mentally about where we were going and push ourselves to not give up until we boarded the bus 😉

So, we set the alarm, woke up, and started the hike at around 6 AM.

triund trek weather in october

We reached the Mcleodganj taxi stand and took the street towards the Bhagsunag temple. After crossing the temple there was a concrete path made all the way to shiva cafe. You can see the Bhagsu Nag waterfall from here. A beautiful stream of water running down between the hills.

Bhagsunag Waterfalls Mcleodganj

The concrete path had too many stairs in between that slowed us down a little. But within no time we reached the famous Shiva Cafe. Because it was too early in the morning, Shiva cafe was closed but it had all the vibes of a peaceful place.

Shiva Cafe McleodGanj

We crossed over the Bhagsunag Waterfalls to reach the other mountain. The trail started to narrow down from here. It didn’t look difficult but had too many diversions and turns. Maps ceased to work and we were left with our own judgment on which trail to take.

Into The Unknown Trails To Triund

One of the thumb rule you can use is to see if the trail has any footmarks, indicating recent usage. And another is to look at the peak and see if you’re not deviating far from the peak. We crossed that trail and reached a point with some magnificent views of the sleeping Mcleodganj.

Sunrise Over McleodGanj

The sun just started uncovering the lush greenery from the low-lit early mornings. We continued walking and this particular stretch was a little steep but there was a hut at the end of it. So with pumped-up energy, we reached the hut.

Breakfast Time

We ordered some Maggi and chai to recoup some energy. There was an elderly man running the store. We also asked him if we were on the right path to reach the peak. He nodded with a smile. Such a lovely smile 😀 We paid for the meals and started the hike again.

Breakfast On Triund Trail

The trail just disappeared from here on. We knew we had to reach the ridge in front of us. All we could see were thorny and dense plants in front of us. A muddy path appeared on close inspection. We just assumed it would be the trail and started walking with the sight undeviated from the peak.

The Trail Of Thorns and Hops

Soon it leads to another trail and we hopped onto that and then another one appeared and just like that, we navigated past the thorny patch. It was indeed a real-life example of “Set your eyes on the destination and you’ll always figure a way to reach there.” Because sometimes that’s life.

You have a sense of where you wanna go and you reach there by trial and error.

Climb Or Walk?

We were now at the start of the ridge. On one side it was the grandiosity of Dharamshala and Mcleodganj. Look at those brick-sized brick walls in front of the mighty mountains. It felt as if, if not for their mercy, those brick walls would’ve crumbled a long time ago. And on the other side, we had a steep climb ahead of us.

Birds Eye View Of McleodGanj From Triund Trek

While the ridge was really steep, almost as if it touched the sky but there was another route available by the side. We started hiking on the other route. And boy we were so glad we took this route. Just after a 100m- 200m walk on this route, we found another cafe. It wasn’t open yet but there were a few granite slabs turned into Sofas for customers to sit. I sat on one of the granite sofas. This cafe was almost on the edge of the mountain. So my eyesight slowly went down the valley before taking a steep climb up to a towering snow-capped mountain. What a tiny speck of dust I was in front of the majestic mountain.

Cafe With The View On Triund Trail

As much as we wanted to stay, the thought of getting a better view from the top made us restart the hike again. The hiking route took us up the ridge again and this time we continued on the ridge without any deviations.

The sun was right on our backs. The sweater I got slowly turned from a shield to baggage. The ridge walk became rough after a while. With steep climbs on a rocky path, it just threw one blow after another.

The Magic Unfurls

By then the snow-capped mountains started wrapping clouds around them. As if they’re doing a magic show to entertain us and make us forget and endure the pain of the steep climb. The occasional sight of a Himalayan Griffon made it all worthwhile.

Meadows And Massifs Of Triund

The first steep climb was behind us and the mountain rewarded us with another. We conquered that as well thinking the peak or Triund campsite was just at the top. But I think the ridge fell in love with our determination, So it presented yet another steep climb, we trekked up that too and then another and another and another. And we yelled at the ridge, “Up Up here we go” .

Trails of Triund

We kept taking small breaks and continued the climb. Occasionally looking back at the downward slope all the way to Mcleodganj. From that point, Mcleodganj was as tiny as an ant. The climb didn’t end there and the steep slopes kept challenging us. Added to that, the sun was merciless too. So we took the meadows to ease the stress on the legs for a while.

Meadows Of Triund Trek

After a brief walk on the meadows, the trail flattened out. The meadows were dotted with huge rocks.

Rocky Trails Of Triund

Face-Off With Dhauladhar Range

To our utter surprise, We reached the Triund Campsite at around 10:15 AM. And there it was, the magnificent Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas. With nothing but courage and a paraglide away from where we stood. I just stood there, taking in everything I can.

Reaching Triund Hilltop

The slippery glacial slopes, the towering sharpness of the peak, the clouds caressing its crown. I sometimes wonder, how on earth do such meadows even exist. I mean, look around, all you see are nothing but towering and unreachable peaks. Yet, almost magically, you have this Triund hill. A hill with all its meadows makes the perfect ground for you to witness the mighty mountains. I sometimes feel its all part of a clever architect’s design.

The Magnificent Dhauladhar Range

I was in love with that place. Just resting there, looking at those mountains made me unreasonably happy. With enough time at hand, we decided to take it slow.

Tranquility Of Triund

Looking at the cloud patterns it appeared to rain, so at around 12 PM we started the climb down the same way. Considering the trail was completely downhill, it was quick and not as tiring as it was. One last click before the rain kicked in xD

Posers Of Triund

On the way back we saw a few people. They may have climbed up via the trail starting at Gallu Devi Temple, stayed at the Triund campsite overnight (which I believe is now banned), and were climbing down. We climbed down the hill, hiked through the thorny trail, and after the last stretch of those winding narrow trails which were now familiar, we saw the Shiva Cafe. I was proved wrong when I said it had the vibes of a peaceful place. Against all my thoughts, it was surprisingly crowded. So crowded that we had to wait for a while to get a seat to sit and eat.

Shiva Cafe On the Way Back

We reached the La Vaca Hostel at around 3:30 PM. Met the other guys, packed our bags, and left to Dharamshala for the bus back to Delhi. For the first time during that trip, I stood there in silence witnessing the myriad shades of sunset sky. And just like that, we bid goodbye to the sun, Dharamshala and the Dhauladhar range of Himalayas.

The Goodbye Sunset At Dharamshala

As part of my effort to help more and more travelers witness the beauty of this world, I’m adding few FAQs to help you plan a hike up to the Triund Peak.

Why Should You Choose Triund Trek?

How long is the triund trek.

There are two routes you can choose for the trek. The trek to Triund via Bhagsu nag waterfalls is the shortest but also the toughest. The trail via Bhagsu nag waterfalls is 8KM one way . The other route to Triund via Gallu Devi temple is 10 KM one way but it’s not as tough as the first one.

How to do Triund trek?

If it was earlier, I would’ve advised you to set aside 2 days for the Triund Trek. The sunset and sunrise are supposedly breathtaking. But camping is now banned. So you can plan to do this in one day. I would suggest you start very early

How To Reach Triund Trek?

The basecamp for the Triund Trek is Mcleodganj. McLedoganj is 8 KM from Dharamshala and is frequented by local buses every 20 Mins. Dharamshala, in turn, is connected with all major cities in India via road. There are overnight Volvo buses running to and from Dharamshala to all major cities like Shimla, Manali, Chandigarh, and Delhi. So you can reach Dharamshala by bus from cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, etc.

You can even choose to fly down to Dharamshala. Book a ticket to Kangra Airport from wherever you’re in the world.

While at Mcleodganj, ask for Dharamkot which is another small area near McLeodganj. After reaching Dharamkot, ask for Bhagunaag Temple or look it up on maps. Once at the Bhagsunaag temple, take the concrete path towards Bhagsunag Waterfall. The waterfall is visible clearly once you cross the temple. Follow the trail to reach the Triund Peak via Bhagsunaag waterfalls. If you want to take the less intense Gallu Devi trail, then the Gallu Devi temple is about 1.6 KM from Bhagsunag Temple.

How difficult is Triund Trek?

Although the difficulty is subjective, I can assure you that if you have basic fitness, (If you can clock 5KM sprint in 40-45 Mins) then you will be able to comfortably finish the trek in one day. Even if you take the trial via Bhagsu Nag waterfalls. So, I would classify it as an easy to moderate trek. Triund trek is regarded as one of the best treks for beginners.

How To Plan For Triund Trek?

If you are coming from Delhi or nearby cities, take an overnight bus on one of your leisure weekends. Reach Dharamkot and start the trek using the directions mentioned above. Complete the trek. Stay in one of the hostels (I stayed in La Vaca Hostel , inexpensive for students too and very cozy). Explore Dharamshala the next day and head back to your city via another overnight bus.

In Case you’re planning for Triund Trek from Hyderabad or Bengaluru or Mumbai, then I recommend you to club a few other places in Himachal Pradesh. I personally took a week off and explored Kasol(Check out my blog post here ), hiked up the meadows of Kheerganga(Check out the DIY guide here ), Manali, did Paragliding Bir Billing, and landed at Mcleodganj for the trek. It was very hectic for me so you may delete or swap a few places. My strong recommendation is don’t come all the way just for Triund Trek.

Essentials For Triund Trek?

If you’re doing a one-day trek to Triund, then below are few items I definitely recommend:

  • Sweatshirt (If you’re starting very early)
  • Good Hiking Shoes
  • Comfortable pair of clothes.
  • Another pair if you wish to get into Bhagsunaag waterfalls on your way back.
  • 2-3 Liters of Water. It gets really hot at the top during the summer months.
  • Shades/sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun.
  • Protein bars or Nutri Bikies to energize yourself. Don’t pack the entire supermarket citing the hiking reason. And PLEASE DON’T LITTER.

P.S: For Ladies, please pack essentials as deemed necessary by you beyond the above-mentioned items. Safe trekking.

P.P.S: I’ve mentioned the above essentials keeping summer months in mind. Please plan according the season in which you’re planning to go.

Is Triund Trek Safe?

Whenever you are in the mountains, you are always at the mercy of nature. Please respect the nature and conditions and you will be good. The trail from Bhagsunag waterfalls to Triund is a continuous climb. I am sure of its slippery nature in monsoons. The trail from the Gallu Devi temple is a ridge walk. So, it is quite dangerous in the event of a landslide. Otherwise, the trail is very good for hiking. Just respect the nature and overcast conditions and you will be safe in the lap of nature.

Can Triund trek be done alone?

It is given that Triund Trek is very ideal for beginners and also the trail is clear from the Gallu Devi temple. So, even solo trekkers and travelers can hike up to the Triund campsite without any doubts in mind. Take sufficient snacks and water and precautions about your personal safety while you’re on and off the trail. It’s highly likely that you will find enough people to befriend if you take the Gallu Devi temple. So rest assured and you can do this trek completely on your own without a guide.

Where To Stay In Your Trip To Triund Trek?

Dharamkot is the basecamp for a lot of treks in the Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas. By the virtue of that, there are a number of backpackers hostels in McleodGanj and Dharamkot. You can find branded backpacker hostels like Hosteller, La Vaca Hostel, etc. We stayed in La Vaca hostel and it was really comfortable and affordable. You can check for bookings on booking.com or Airbnb.

Other Treks Near Triund!

So, if you have more time at hand you can go for other trekking destinations around Triund. Treks like Indrahar Pass Trek, Laka Glacier Trekking are all one day trek away from Triund hill. Refer to this article for more details.

Cost of Triund Trek!

Barring the personal expenses, the cost for Triund Trek is INR 0 rupees. You read that right, unsure why, but there is no entry fee for Triund trek. So if you’re doing it on your own it’s completely free of cost.

What’s The Height Of Triund Hill?

The Triund Hill is at a height aka Altitude of 2850m above sea level. It is situated at the foot of the Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas.

Triund Trek Map/Route

Refer to the below-handmarked trek route for reaching Triund Hill from Mcleodganj. I’ve marked the trails for both the trails of Bhagusnag Waterfalls as well as the Gallu Devi Temple trail.

Triund Route Map From McleodGanj

Should You Choose Kheerganga Trek or Triund Trek?

Honestly, there is no right answer. For me, Kheerganga was more exciting simply because it had much more variety. Kheerganga has meadows, forests, steep climbs, waterfalls, and above all hot water springs. You can read about my experience here . But on the other hand, Triund Trek brought me much closer to the snow-capped mountains which were just distant backgrounds in pictures during Kheerganga Trek. However, Kheerganga is a moderate difficulty trek and you need two days to complete the trek. So if you have two days to spare, give Kheerganga a shot. If you’re looking for a quick weekend trek, then go for Triund.

Hope the FAQs help you plan your trip better. Have a good time in the Himalayas and while you’re there, take care of the mountains.

Triund Trek – A complete guide to trekking and camping.

triund trek weather in october

Triund is one of the most visited treks of India. Almost 100000+ visitors hike up to Triund ever year. The beauty of this place has been spread among the people lately, therefore attracting nature lovers towards this stunning trek. The trek covers 7km of distance, which will take you 4 to 6 hours to reach depending upon your stamina. The trek is easy to moderate.

How to reach Triund-

The Triund trek starts from Dharamkot or Gallu Devi in Mcleodganj, Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh. Dharamkot is just a ten minutes drive from the Mcleodganj bus stand.

Now, coming onto how to reach Mcleodganj.

triund trek

When to go Triund  –

The trek remains closed during the time of monsoon and extremely cold weather. The best time to visit Triund in summer is April to May and in winter October to December. If you want to do a snow trek then you might visit in December.

Points to remember-

  • Plan beforehand-

Before going to Triund unplanned, plan a few things beforehand. The timing for day-hikers is 8 am to 11 am. You will not be allowed by the security check to go after 11 if for a day hike due to security measures. The timing for the people who are planning to camp up is 8 am to 2 pm. If you are planning to stay up, I will suggest you book your stay in advance as Triund has a lot of visitors, you would not want yourself to be without shelter as it is not safe and also very cold. You can book your trip and stay for as cheap as 1499INR including food at www.unciatrails.com

2) Wear multiple layers

In winters – As being on a height of around 285m, It is quite cold on the top, especially at night, the temperature goes from -4 to -10 degrees. Wear layers instead of heavy woolen sweaters, as you will feel sweaty and uncomfortable while hiking up. Wear button ups or zipper jackets. Wear at least 3 warm layers at night (layers trap the air in between and keep you warmer). Keep 3 to 4 woolen socks as your head and sole of your legs tend to get affected by cold the most. Don’t forget a woolen cap, gloves and scarf and a spare shawl.

In summers – The weather is quite good in summers and you need to wear light warm clothes (not more than two layers) but keep a warm sweater or jacket and two woolen socks for the night time.

3) Take your water bottle with you-

As being a tourist spot, everything is very costly in the hills. You will get water bottles worth 20INR for 50INR and sports to drink worth 80 for 150. So, keep your own 1ltr water bottle with you as you will be needing it a lot and you can get it refilled at 20INR in various shops on the way. You can even get food and other important utilities on the top the same applies here, the cost will be a little bit higher.

4) Gears you need-

triund trek

5)  Take your toiletries  –

You shall not expect a fancy bathroom or toilet there, you will get only dry pits. So, you need to keep sanitizer, tissue/toilet paper, etc with you.

Things to carry –

Sunscreen, sunglasses

Sanitizer, toilet/tissue paper

Insect repellent

Spare shawl

That’s pretty much all you need to know about Triund before visiting. Also, do keep in mind that the beauty of the place shall not be affected due to mankind. Don’t dispose of waste here and there, keep them in your bag and dump it later.

Triund Trek: All You Need to Know

Trekking has always been one of those activities that my non-pathetic alter ego has yearned for. But rarely does it get an opportunity to indulge in the same. The regular readers will be aware of the first-ever trek of any value or consequence done for this blog, the Valley of Flowers .

After more than two years, I was again back in the Himalayas and as I’d mentioned in the previous post, McLeod Ganj spoiled us with food . So, to overcome the socialist guilt of excessive consumption, I decided to undertake the Triund Trek the next day along with Su Ko who has always been a bigger sinner of gluttony.

We did have a bigger than usual breakfast at the hotel in McLeod Ganj but I think it was fair because we were going to have a tough time. We first moved from McLeod Ganj to Dharamkot by hiring an auto rickshaw. It is a smaller settlement barely a couple of KMs away and it is better to take some vehicle to this point to save time. At this point, the real trek starts and it is 7KMs from here to the peak of Triund, a distance I rarely walk at one go even on the plains.

The first few yards of the trek are not that difficult. The ambiance was not lush green like the monsoons but had a more demure green look with occasional reddish hues of the autumn. The moon was visible even in the broad daylight due to the clear and unpolluted sky. We occasionally came across other trekkers, small settlements and mini caravans of the locals with solitary donkeys.

8534185432 211e2f07c0 o

One particular view was especially attracted my attention. It was a small plot of terrace cultivation that could be seen from a distance. There was also a steep trail leading towards it and there was also a small hut and I wondered how great it would be to live such a secluded existence. As we moved on, that particular plot kept becoming clearer and after a couple of tiring hours, I suddenly noticed that we’ve reached a higher spot than the plot in question.

8534179558 dacd12ef56 o

The progress was slow and tedious. Years of lethargic urban lifestyle was showing its colours. The sun was warm but the shades were chilly and the lone water bottle was quickly getting empty. But with every turn the Dhauladhars became clearer with vibrant fall colours.

8534179892 7a8ea56f4d o

From Triund it is possible to move higher up to certain other locations and in fact it is one of the ancient routes connecting Kangra with Chamba. But the popular day trek for dummies is supposed to end here itself. We were tired, famished and sleepy. We asked one of the shopkeepers if we can get anything to eat, he offered us Maggi and Gatorade and we eagerly lapped up this triumph of globalization. We waited for an hour but the fog refused to go away and so the pseudo aerial shots that I fantasized about were never possible.

8534179274 977e89a0e8 o

While coming down I suddenly saw a goat. After a few steps, I saw a couple more and finally I noticed an entire herd of mountain goats. I always knew that the goats are capable of good balancing acts. The first-ever circus I ever visited during my childhood had a goat walking on wire. But it was impressive seeing so many of them swarming the steep mountain and soon I realized that they were not alone. There was a shepherd guiding them but we only heard his voice. But we did see a shepherd dog keeping a close eye on them. I must confess that this was the most stately dog I have even seen in my life.

8533069733 c0e354a9d3 o

While coming back, we stopped for tea at the midpoint. There was a small house cum shop and also a small temple. There we found a lonely British guy who called himself Garry. Apparently, he has been coming to India for almost a couple of decades. He works for a few months, saves money and rushes to India. And he was planning to spend that night at that shack in the midst of nowhere. This is how the mountains seduce people! Anyways, the last leg of the trek was eventless and I just got a few photographs clicked with silly poses to be used as display pics in various social media profiles.

The Dharamshala sojourn ends basically with this trek. You can read the guide below for complete information on Triund Trek. On the other hand, if you need more information on Dharamshala including what to do and where to eat, read this guide on Dharamshala .

Triund Trek: A Complete Guide

Where exactly is the triund trek located.

Triund is a popular day trek near McLeodganj (Dharamshala). However, serious trekkers can also go beyond Triund Top to Indrahar Pass and then cross over to Chamba District.

How long is the Trek?

Triund is around 9 kms from McLeod Ganj. You can save time by hiring an auto rickshaw to Dharamkot and then trekking the final 7 kms.

Can we camp atop Triund?

Back in 2012-2013 when I visited this area for the first time, both food and tents were easily available at the top. However, in order to counter littering and other environmental issues, camping was banned at Triund Top !

So, as of now, as far as I understand, Triund camping is not possible and you need to start early in the morning and come back to Dharamkot or McLeodganj before it is dark to be safe.

Any Alternative Camping Site?

I am not completely sure about it but as far as I know, you can go ahead of Triund and camp near Snowline . It is a point around 30 mins ahead of Triund, on the way to Indrahar Pass. In the good old days, there used to be one guy running a shack turned cafe turned camping site here. Not sure if he is still there!

So, what exactly is this Indrahar Pass?

Indrahar Pass is a 4300-meter high mountain pass connecting Kangra and Chamba districts. You will need multiple days for this and the route goes through Triund, SNoiwline, Laqa Got, and Lahesh Caves before finally reaching Indrahar Pass. People generally camp at SNowline and then the Cave.  I once made a failed attempt to Indrahar . Hopefully, I will complete it someday.

How much time does it take?

The ascent should take 4-5 hours depending on your physical ability. The descent will be faster. In any case, you will have to spend one whole day. Start early in the morning and try to come back before it’s too dark to be on the safer side.

What are the prerequisites for the trek?

It is one of the easy to moderate treks you will find in the Himalayas. But if you are not a regular trekker, make sure that you’re physically fit enough. Also, carry warm cloths and water with you. Earlier, there used to be shacks offering food along the route and at the top too. After the camping ban, I am not fully sure about that.

What is the Best time for Triund Trek?

It can be done throughout the year. Try the spring or early summer for the best colours. I did it once in November and once in October and they were comfortable too. But the extreme winter will be more challenging with low temperature and fog but people try it in Jan-Feb too in order to witness snow.

Guides for Triund Trek

You generally can do it yourself as the trail is well-marked. But if you must take one just inquire the travel agents in McLeod Ganj .

Lovely Images.

I have been to Mcleo and Dharamkot two time, this time I am planning to trek Triund in this may month and I am alone. Can you tell me from your experience would it be safe to trek Triund alone?

Thanks for dropping by… it should be fine even if you go alone if you are physically fit… it gets a bit hectic towards the last few yards… carry some water…

Very good post. I myself visited Triund and trekked further ahead to Ilaqa Snow line. It was an awesome experience. Your photos look terrific especially the clear sky. When I visited it was overcast and bit gloomy an absolute nightmare for photography. I liked your formatting especially the FAQs and will definitely imbibe it in my forthcoming travelogues including Triund with your kind permission 🙂 Of course I won’t copy the content and anyway I started from Naddi.

Hey! How about trekking at this time? Do you think monsoons will ruin t or what? Are there any arrangements to stay uphill?

I think it is fine… it is one of the easier treks… just get raincoats and shoes with good grip…

Ideally you can come back from Triund on the same day… but if you want to stay up there, I think there is a Forest guest house and some other private provisions too…

Quick Navigation

Triund Trek

For a brief introduction, Triund is a trekking destination located about 18 kilometers from Dharamshala and about 11 kilometers from Mcleodganj. Of this entire distance, only 7 kilometers is the actual trek, rest all can be covered by a motorable road. The trek starts at Galu Devi Temple near Dharamkot and takes about 3 hours to complete.

The first 4 kilometers of the walk is a gradual incline and it is only the final 2 kilometers after Snowline cafe that involves a steep climb all the way till Triund. The total gain in altitude is about 800 meters from Mcleodganj to Triund top.

So what is Triund really? Triund is a large land of green grass which is the endpoint of this 7 kilometers long walk. The place in the image above is what is known as Triund, a point from where you start trekking back to Mcleodganj. It is also the base camp and acclimatization point for the trek to Indrahar Pass trek.

The spot sits at top of the mountain and provides a 360 degrees view of the valley around. There are a few campsites, dhabas, tea stalls and even an HPPWD rest house built here. So you can either walk back on the same day (if time allows) or you could stay at Triund for the night and trek back the next morning.

Triund Altitude

The ridge elevation at Triund is between 2,810 and 2,875 meters. You start from Mcleodganj at a height of 2,082 meters and reach Triund top, thus gaining about 700 – 800 meters in height at the end of the trek.

How to reach Triund Trek

Mcleodganj is the nearest town to Triund and serves as the base for people wanting to undertake the trek. That is where you will need to get first and reaching Mcleodganj is not difficult at all. The place is very well connected by road and you can reach here by either your own vehicle or public transport. This small town is, in fact, the residence of the 14th Dalai Lama and hence an important place for Tibetan Buddhists. Irrespective of your month and season of travel, you will Mcleodganj accessible and open for tourists.

I have covered the details on reaching Mcleodganj in details in a different article, How to Plan a Trip to Mcleodganj . For a detailed description, I will recommend that you also take a look at the other article. But for a brief overview, if you were traveling by your own vehicle and starting from Delhi, route to Mcleodganj  will be as mentioned below.

Delhi – Panipat – Karnal – Chandigarh – Rupnagar – Anandpur Sahib – Una – Amb – Kangra – Dharamshala – Mcleodganj

There can, of course, be several alternate routes but this will be the best and the fastest way to travel. Total journey will be of about 480 to 500 kilometers depending on where you started from in Delhi. Travel time will be anywhere between 10 to 12 hours. Road condition for the entire journey will be a mix of good and average. I will highly recommend taking an early start from Delhi though so that you are able to reach Mcleodganj well within time.

How to reach Triund from Delhi by Bus

Mcleodganj and its nearby town of Dharamshala are very well connected by public transport. There are regular bus services to both these places from almost every major town nearby. The main Bus terminal is actually in Dharamshala where most of the buses stop but a few from Delhi and Pathankot go all the way to Mcleodganj as well.

If however, your bus dropped you at Dharamshala Bus stand, you will easily be able to find another mode of commute for your final stretch of the journey. There is a regular Bus service between both the places that costs about Rs. 20 per person and will drop you at Mcleodganj from Dharamshala in 15 to 20 minutes. If you weren’t able to find a Bus then the second option will be a shared cab which too is available in plenty and costs about the same.

Gaggal Airport, also known as Dharamshala- Kangra Airport or Kangra Airport, is the nearest airport to Mcleodganj located about 20 kilometers away. Once you land at the airport, you can easily board a taxi from right outside which will drop you at Mcleodganj in about 30 minutes. There are several flights operated by Air India and SpiceJet Airlines between Delhi and Kangra. But please note that the due to the location of the airport, the weather is a very big reason here for flight cancellations; especially during winter and monsoon.

Pathankot is the nearest major railways station located about 100 kilometers from Mcleodganj. There is however another narrow gauge railway station at Kangra and is only about 30 kilometers away. The train that brings you at Kangra is actually a Toy Train (like the Kalka Shimla one) so unless you were hoping in to enjoy this train ride, better would be to board a train for Pathankot only. There are direct Buses from Pathankot for Mcleodganj throughout the day and it takes 3 to 4 hours to complete the journey. These are all operated by HRTC and fare per person is about Rs. 150.

This is just a short overview on reaching Mcleodganj. Please read How to Plan a Trip to Mcleodganj for a much more descriptive version of this information.

Triund Trek Overvview

  • Difficulty Level: Easy
  • Duration: 1 – 2 Days
  • Trek Type: 1 Way. You start and end at Mcleodganj.
  • Trail: Forest trail with steep ascents
  • Altitude: Max Altitude of 9,278 ft at Triund
  • Starting Point: Dharamkot
  • Best time to visit: March to June; September to December

Once you have reached Mcleodganj and comfortably checked into a hotel, you can plan your trek to Triund on the very next day or maybe a day after, whichever seems convenient based on the time you have in hand. From Mcleodganj, the first place to reach would be the Gallu Devi Temple after Dharamkot. This is where the motorable road ends and the trek starts.

Mcleodganj to Gallu Devi Temple

The total distance from Mcleodganj to Gallu Devi Temple is about 8 kilometers, depending on where you were starting from in Mcleodganj. There are 3 ways that you can cover this distance. You can either rent a private taxi to drop you at the start point of the trek which will cost you about Rs. 400 to Rs. 500 depending on the season and how well you could negotiate.

The second way is to hire an auto-rickshaw but it will not take you all the way to the temple. The auto rickshaw will drop you at Dharamkot because the condition of the road after that until Gallu Devi Temple is very bad. So you can pay Rs. 50 for an auto rickshaw to Dharamkot and then walk the last 2 kilometers to the temple. So in a way, your trek will actually start from Dharamkot itself.

The third way is to start walking all the way from Mcleodganj itself. This is how I did the trek. So I actually walked 15 kilometers to Triund and returned the same day; a total trek of 30 kilometers from Mcleodganj in floater sandals. Why? It is actually kind of a long story that you can read at my Triund Travelogue .

There are a few guesthouses in the Gallu Devi Temple area. So if you wanted, you can even check into a hotel here and stay close to the trek starting point.

Gallu Devi Temple to Triund

The trek after Gallu Devi Temple is a mix of a dirt trail and rocky terrain. The entire length of the trail is about 7 kilometers; of which, the first 5 is a gradual ascent. For the final 2 kilometers, however, it climbs rapidly and may seem a little difficult to some people. Depending on how fit you were, your walking pace and breaks, the average time taken to complete the trek is about 3 to 4 hours.

The road after Dharamkot is a scenic one and you will enjoy the walk if you started the trek from here only. Walk for about half an hour on this trail till you come across the temple of Gallu Devi. After the temple, the motorable road ends and the dirt trail to Triund continues straight. Around halfway through the trail is a paradise for anyone with interest in bird watching. The densely forested trail will then start to get steeper with each step.

You will come across a few tea stalls or dhabas on the way where you can take a small break and eat something. Keep in mind though that on the trail, everything will cost you 3 or 4 times. So you will actually pay Rs. 30 or 40 for a Parle G Biscuit packet, buy a Maggie for Rs. 80 or more; Rs. 50 for a water bottle and Rs. 150 for a small plate of Rajma Chawal. Hence I will strongly advise that you bring items to munch on from Mcleodganj itself.

Triund Trek Duration

Triund is ideally a 2 days trek. You reach the top on Day 1, stay there for the night and return the next day. If you were however short on time, you can easily do it in one day as well; as long as you started early from Mcleodganj. The first time I trekked to Triund, I left my hotel in Mcleodganj at 7 AM, reached Triund and was back before it got dark. And I actually walked the entire 30 kilometers from the hotel itself. So if you took a taxi or auto rickshaw to drop you at Gallu Devi Temple, it will take even less time.

Time Required for Triund trek

How long it takes for you to complete the trek will entirely depend on your speed and breaks you take. But on an average basis, from Gallu Devi Temple, it takes about 3 hours to reach the top and 2 hours to walk down. If you walked from Mcleodganj itself, time taken for Triund trek will easily be 6 to 7 hours to reach the top and12 hours for a return trip on the same day.

Is Triund Trek Difficult?

The difficulty level of Triund trek is considered as intermediate. The trail is moderately challenging with the initial 5 kilometers being fairly easy to traverse. The final 2.5 kilometers of the walk is a little steep, and famously known as the, “22 curves.”  The trek is suited for all age groups as long as there is no medical condition involved and you are fit enough to walk 10 kilometers with breaks in between.

Food at Triund

There are plenty of cafes en route that you can eat at such as Magic View, Scenic View, and Snowline Cafe. Apart from these, there are a lot of tea stalls as well that offer basic refreshments. At Triund top too, there are a few dhabas that you can have your dinner and breakfast at. Please note though that at this height, food is bound to cost you more and will be very simple. Do not expect something too delicious or mouth watering.

Best time for Triund Trek

Triund remains open for the most part of the year except for the months of  January and February when the trail gets blocked by heavy snowfall. The months of April, May, and June in the first half of the year; and the months of September, and October in the second half are considered to be the best time to trek to Triund. Weather in these months is very pleasant and favorable for trekking and camping.

July and August are the months of monsoon and trekking 7 kilometers with the rain beating down on you is definitely not the best idea.  Though it is not advised to go trekking at this time, the scenery, however, is at its best in these months. The meadow gets lush green and covered with flowers of all kinds and colors; presenting an out of this world vista for you to capture if you are ready to risk the rain.

The month of November is generally a bad time because the vistas at this time are very dull and dry and the weather will be extremely cold.  It starts to snow here in December after which, the trek becomes a bit dangerous to be attempted without proper trekking equipment and guides. You must remember that people have in fact died on Triund trek so you must not take it for granted and attempt in winter season or during bad weather.

The trekking season mostly starts in April after winter has passed. You can trek in the month of April as well but plan it towards the end of the month to be sure that all the campsites will get operational and you can even plan a night stay.

Weather at Triund

Due to its altitude, weather at Triund remains cold throughout the year. During the winter season, it is freezing cold with temperature dropping below 0 degrees and a thick sheet of snow all around. But during summer, it is more of a pleasant cold that you would really enjoy. Let me give a month by month breakdown of how the weather trends here.

Triund Trek in January

The weather at this time is freezing and it can snow here anytime. The trek is considered dangerous in this month and you will need professional assistance to tackle it. It may even be closed in winter depending on the weather and snow on the ground.

Triund Trek in February

The situation and weather at this time pretty much remain the same as January. There will be no camping options to stay at unless you arranged one for yourself. The forest guest house too is closed at this time.

Triund Trek in March

Snow starts to melt in March and weather starts to warm up. However, it is still a great time for someone who wants to find some snow on the trail. The mesmerizing snow-capped landscape makes it a great time to visit but please check the weather before you start.

Triund Trek in April

Snow will mostly be all gone from the ground, at least from the trail. April is the month that marks the beginning of tourist season in Mcleodganj and Triund as well. It is one of the best times to plan the trek.

Triund Trek in May

May is the best month to trek for anyone who has never been on a trek before. This is the time when numerous amateur and first-time trekkers visit here.

Triund Trek in June

Most of June is a good time to visit but it starts to rain here towards the end of the month. If wanting to stay overnight, you should book a room in the Forest Guesthouse rather than camping.

Triund Trek in July

Monsoon season is in full swing and it is not usually advised to trek in this month. If you do, then please prepare in a way that you are ready to handle the rain.

Triund Trek in August

Though monsoon brings its own hassles, it also has its own rewards as well. View at this time are at the best and the entire Kangra valley comes to life under a lush green carpet of grass. Though you may find the trail to be slippery and muddy, the magnificent views all around will make it worth your time and effort.

Triund Trek in September

This, in my opinion, is the best month to trek to Triund. Monsoon will be all gone but would still have left plenty of greenery behind for you to enjoy.

Triund Trek in October

Autumn arrives in October and all that was green now turns Orange giving a golden and magical touch to the valley. October too is one of the best months to visit Triund. Weather, however, starts to turn cold towards the end of the month.

Triund Trek in November

Vistas and scenery in November are a bit dull and dry but at least the first half of the month is considered to be a good time to go. The temperature starts to dip sharply in the second half of the month and it may even snow lightly at the top.

Triund Trek in December

The trail remains open and is mostly snow free for the first half of the month. The weather would be freezing cold with temperature starting to drop below 0 at nights. By the end of December, chances of snowfall increase significantly, even on the trail.

Accommodation at Triund

Accommodation at Triund is available in the form of a Forest rest house and campsites but only in tourist season. During winter, both of these options become unavailable after it starts to snow and weather turns extremely cold. Where to stay will depend entirely on your personal choice but the majority of the people chose to camp here. You do not have to book in advance and will easily find a camp site on arrival.

Triund Guest House

The forest rest house, on the other hand, is recommended for pre-booking. They have limited rooms and there is a strong possibility that you may not find a place to stay if you did not book. A lot of people decide to stay here because it is far more comfortable than getting stuffed in a sleeping bag inside a small tent. Booking for the rest house can be done through the DFO office in Dharamshala. Please make sure to bring the booking permit with you otherwise the caretaker won’t let you in even if you have it booked. If you reached Triund without booking, it still never hurts to ask upon arrival as well. If they had a room available, you may get it.

For booking, you can contact Divisional Forest Officer’s office at  01892-224887 or email at [email protected] . The office is located near Police Station Dharamshala; behind BSNL Telephone Exchange store and opposite to General Post Office (GPO) Dharamshala. You can also book it online by following THIS LINK .

Self Camping at Triund

If you want to try self-camping then you would either have to bring in your own gear or rent one from any sports shop in Mcleodganj. Problem with self camping is to carry all that gear to the top, then the hassle of setting and wrapping it up and you may not even get a good spot to camp because they are all mostly occupied already by campsite owners. I will rather suggest that you stay at a campsite only. It is not that costly and will save you a lot of trouble.

Triund Camping Cost

The camp sites will charge between Rs. 500 to Rs. 700 per person.  A tent big enough to accommodate 4 people will cost Rs. 1500 with sleeping bags. This does not include any meal charges and you will have to pay for the food separately.

Mobile Network at Triund

Mobile connectivity at Triund is not that great. You may get reception at times and spots but it will really be bad and will continue to come and go. Just assume that you will be off the network for as long as you are at Triund.

Mentioned below are some other frequently asked questions about Triund.

Is Triund Trek Dangerous

Is the trek dangerous? I would not really call it so but at the same time, cannot even deny the fact that people have died while trekking to Triund or further. So please do take precautions and walk carefully. Do not take unnecessary risks or try to click selfies at tricky spots. The trek never gets too steep or too narrow to be termed as “dangerous” but it still is mountain region where one miscalculated or careless step can send you tumbling down the hill.

Why you should Visit Triund

There are plenty of reasons why you should visit Triund. The trek is perfect for someone who has not done a lot of trekking but would like to try their hand at it. The trail never gets too challenging to dishearten but is also not too easy to be called boring. The views you will get en route; and then at the top will take your breath away. If you have even slightest of interest in either bird watching, star gazing or photography then Triund is where you should be headed. If natural beauty, mountains, lush green vistas are what interests you then you would fall in love with Triund.

Electricity at Triund

There is no electricity available at Triund, either at the campsites or the forest rest house. Hence it is of utmost importance that you bring along a torch that can last the night. If you have a power bank, charge it to the fullest and bring it along. For photography enthusiasts, make sure your camera battery has enough juice to last the trip.

Itinerary for Triund

Your itinerary will entirely depend on the time you have in hand but 4 to 5 days is what I recommend for visiting Triund and the nearby areas of Mcleodganj and Dharamshala. This will ensure that you travel at a relaxed pace, cover Triund and visit all the other places that are worth visiting in this area. There are plenty of other tourist attractions in Mcleodganj and Dharamshala and I will recommend reading How to Plan a Trip to Mcleodganj for a detailed description of the journey.

Triund Trek Starting Point

Gallu Devi Temple after Dharamkot is considered to be the starting point of the trek but you can also choose to start it from Dharamkot itself.

Things to carry for Triund Trek

I completed the entire Triund trek in a single day in knee length shorts, a T-Shirt, floater sandals and with only a camera in my hand. Am I saying that you should do the same? No. I did that because of some confusion that happened that morning but the point I am trying to make here is that you do not need to carry something special to complete the Triund trek.

What to carry for Triund Trek will depend on how long you were planning it for but for a 2 days trip, all that you need is a good pair of shoes, some comfortable clothing, a water bottle, something to eat on the way and plenty of stamina. Do not carry an entire backpack unless you were planning to go further towards Indrahar Pass from Triund. You should travel light to really enjoy the trek.

If you have a pair of good trekking shoes then it is an added advantage. Otherwise, a pair of sports shoes with firm grip will do equally well. You should wear comfortable trek pants and must avoid jeans or other body-hugging clothes. It is also a leech prone area so shorts too are a big No. Carry a light bag to put something to munch on along the trail and some night clothes if you were planning to camp for the day and return the next morning.

This will entirely depend on the time of your trek. But for trekking in the tourist season from April to October, a jacket with some regular cotton clothes will do. You are going to be walking 7 kilometers up a hill and your body would warm up. So you will not need all woolens while trekking because that would become uncomfortable. At night, however, it is bound to get cold irrespective of the time of your trip so a jacket is a must to bring along item. Also, pack a pair of gloves and a cap to protect your hands and head.

If you were going in March, November or December, then please make sure you are packing a pair of thermals. You would need it definitely to survive the cold night up there.  If planning in January, February or early March, you would have to be in an entirely professional trekking gear that can survive all the snow.

Other Items to Pack

Depending on your own comfort and preference, below is a list of some items that I will recommend you to bring.

  • Trekking shoes. If not then sports shoes with a good grip.
  • A comfortable and light bag that you can keep on your shoulders for hours without it becoming inconvenient. Ensure that your bag is either waterproof or has a rain cover.
  • Clothes as I explained above
  • Please bring two track pants. Wear one during the trek and carry one to wear at night while sleeping.
  • Pack two collared t-shirts, and preferably full-sleeve ones to help protect against the sun.
  • Pair of Gloves preferably something that won’t get wet easily
  • Socks. Wear one and carry a pair in case it got cold at night.
  • Toothbrush and Paste. If you are OK not brushing your teeth one morning and do it after you have reached back Mcleodganj then skip it. LOL.
  • Sunscreen with highest SPF you can find
  • Soap / Facewash
  • Toilet paper (Very Important)
  • Light towel
  • A water bottle that you can refill
  • A plastic bag that you can put your wallet, documents, and electronics in, in case it started to rain.
  • Documents such as valid ID proofs and their xeroxes
  • Some basic medicines like for upset stomach, body-ache and pain relief spray or balm
  • Small Knife (Multipurpose)

That will cover most, if not all, of the information you need to know in order to trek to Triund. If you have any questions; or need any other details; please feel free to ask in the comments section below; or at our Community Forum; and I will be glad to answer. If you have been to Triund and have tips to share that can be of help to others, I welcome you to please suggest.

Hi, I’m planning to visit in mid-September. Wanted to know whether the camps that are available at campsite are also banned? Or just the ones that we bring along? If all are banned, does that leave only the guest house for staying at the top?

How is the weather in Triund during the month of September to October? Can we experience snow in October month? Do we need guide in the month of October? Also is Kareri Lake trek safe for solo girl trekkers? Please answer, as I would like to do both of these treks during the holidays of October month. Thanks

Good day Radhika and thanks for the visit to https://www.triundhill.com and for your query! As of the weather the months between September, October and November are just fine for the day trek and camping at Triund. . If you want to go only for the day trek, then you certainly don’t need any guide. This is one of safest trek in and closest to Dharamshala Local area. The trek to Triund is well beaten and is also safe Solo girl trekkers and any other Solo person. But if you want to spend some nights in Triund then you will have to book a room either with the Forest Department at Dharamsala or hire some travel agent for the whole trekking and camping. Also if you go without guide, then there’s a private guest house just behind the Forest Department rest house. There are various agencies, which offer different and affordable packages for the famous Triund Trek in Dharamsala and most probably worldwide. It is very safe for the girls. If someone wants to do a solo, trek then, we have a dedicate page in our site, that provides complete information on trek. You may carry some warm clothes for Triund Trek and Camp during the month of October and November. As of snowfall in Triund, it is weather dependent, sometimes you may witness snowfall right in the first week of November and sometime there is no snowfall even in the month of December. But if you really want to do a snow trek to Triundhill, then the months of March to April are just perfect. As of Kareri Lake trek, it is also safe for solo girls. The trek is bit lengthy but can be done in a day. Though as of now by September 2021, the trek to Kareri Lake is badly damaged due to recent flashflood in the monsoon months of July and August. So right now, if you want to do a trek to Kareri Lake, then we recommend you hire a guide either from Kareri Village or Dharamsala. Another point for Kareri Lake, due to the heavy rains, the nearest road connecting Dharamsala and Ghera village has been damaged beyond quick repairs. So now you either have to trek up to Ghera Village via Dal Lake and Village Satovarir or reach the trail head via road connecting Shahpur to Noli and Sali village. We wish you a Safe, Clean and Green Trek.

The temperature decreases as you climb to a higher altitude. At night, the temperature drops below 10°C at higher campsites and it also gets windy as you gain altitude. Lonely Plan-it: how to organize a hike on Chile’s famous W Trek in 2023

Sarah Reid

Tackling the W Trek in Chile’s Parque Nacional Torres del Paine is a challenge and a thrill © sharptoyou / Shutterstock

In this series, we take you step by step through how we planned some of the most complicated travel adventures, so you can recreate them yourself with ease. Here, writer Sarah Reid takes you through how she planned her hike on Chile’s famous W Trek.

Tracing the foothills of the snow-capped Paine Massif in southern  Chile ’s famous  Parque Nacional Torres del Paine , the W Trek one of the world’s most epic multi-day tramps. Named for the shape sketched by the 80km (50-mile) trail, the W Trek immerses you in some of Patagonia’s most mesmerizing scenery, with turquoise lakes, oozing glaciers, gnarled subpolar forests and wildlife spotting opportunities aplenty (you might even spot a puma).

While it’s easy to follow the well-trodden if not always well-marked trail, planning the expedition is complicated by the numerous ways to access the route and the multiple reservations required before you set out. Having recently experienced the trail in two different ways, I’ve figured out all the tricks you’ll need to plan one of the most memorable hikes of your life. Here’s what I learned.

Step 1: Time it right

Find the best mix of good weather and accommodation availability.

Hiking the W Trek hinges on the availability of the half-dozen currently operational refugios (hostels with limited dorm beds, a restaurant, hot showers and campsites) dotted along the route, which can book out months in advance during the November-to-February peak season. This is the warmest time of the year comes with the added bonus of long daylight hours – but it can also be very windy. The less-busy shoulder seasons (March to April and September to October) offer increased camping availability and more agreeable weather (potentially; this is Patagonia, after all). A guide is required for a wintertime hike (May to August, when refugios are closed). Wildlife, including pumas, can be spotted year-round.

To get to Torres del Paine, you’ll need to travel to the small, beautifully situated gateway city of  Puerto Natales . You can fly here (or to nearby  Punta Arenas ) from Santiago , take a four-day ferry trip from Puerto Montt  or travel overland from  Argentina (a 5.5-hour bus ride from El Calafate to Puerto Natales). From Puerto Natales, expect a two-hour bus ride to the eastern end of the W Trek, and a three-hour bus ride followed by a 45-minute ferry to the western end.

Step 2: Decide which direction to hike in

You can start or finish your trek with one of the hike’s most epic views.

The W Trek can be hiked from east to west or vice versa, independently or guided, and you can take as many days as you like (pending refugio availability). Hikers with a good level of fitness will find it’s an achievable four-day independent hike. Factor in an extra day to add a glacier kayaking or ice-trekking excursion departing from Refugio Grey (arrange in advance; more on this below).

The benefits of hiking east to west include frequent daily bus services from Puerto Natales (from 7am) to the trailhead. You’ll also knock off the challenging hike to  Mirador las Torres , at the base of the three granite towers that give the national park its name, on the first day. Hiking in this direction also means you don’t have to worry about securing a spot on the first ferry of the day across Lago Pehoé to access the western end of the W (critical for a four-day itinerary), as ferry tickets can’t be booked in advance. The early ferry (9am) only operates from November to March.

The beauty of hiking west to east is the opportunity to spend your last night at Refugio Chileno, making it easier to catch the sunrise at Mirador Las Torres on your final day and be back in Puerto Natales by dinnertime (finishing at Paine Grande gets you back to town closer to 10pm). With Patagonia known for its strong westerlies, hiking eastward also keeps the wind at your back for most of the journey.

Step 3: Consider your booking options

Reserve your accommodation, transit and park pass in advance to simplify your life.

This is where it gets tricky. The two refugios at the trail’s western end (Paine Grande and Grey) are operated by Vertice Patagonia , which also runs glacier trekking and kayaking tours. The other four refugios  (Francés, Cuernos, Chileno and Central; there’s an additional bunkhouse near Central called Torre Norte) are operated by  Las Torres Patagonia . You can book preferred campsites and dorm beds (some refugios also have rooms) separately through their websites, or make reservations at camps run by both operators in a single booking via Booking Patagonia .

Meals, pre-pitched tents, sleeping bags and mats can be prebooked for additional fees,  pushing the cost of a four-day hike from as little as $62 (camping costs only; wild camping is forbidden) to around $400 if you book all the extras (and it’s worth doing so if you’re not keen on carrying all your supplies, including cooking equipment). Booking bus tickets to and from Puerto Natales in advance is also recommended;  Bus Sur services both ends of the trail.

An easier if more expensive option is to book an all-inclusive package. These come in all shapes and sizes, ranging from classic unguided through-hikes, to hikes along sections of the trail each day with a guide then shuttling back to an off-trail camp or lodge each night. (Note that it’s difficult to complete all legs of the W Trek as day hikes given the volume of backtracking required to the two exit points.) Local operators offering good-value unguided through-hike packages with an east-west itinerary (about $1000) include Chile Nativo and ChileTour Patagonia . Las Torres Patagonia and Vertice Patagonia also offer packages with accommodation at their own properties (a through-hike is only possible with the former). International operators including  G Adventures and  World Expeditions also offer through-hike packages.

You’ll also need to book a multi-day national park pass via the  CONAF website ($35), which will be checked at the entrance to the park.

Step 4: Prep for the adventure

Find the perfect gear for your adventure.

With the entire trail located between 100-900m (330-2600ft) above sea level, there’s no altitude to factor in on the W Trek. But it’s the ever-changing Patagonian weather, along with the uneven, often-exposed trail, that will likely test you. Layers are key, and a waterproof jacket, rain pants and pack cover are essential year-round.

Expect to have next-to-no cellular reception throughout the journey. Wi-fi coupons are available for sale at refugios (provided the router is working) but it’s more fun to stay disconnected and mingle with fellow hikers at the bar instead; every refugio has one. Be mindful when packing that everything you carry into the national park must come out with you – the only rubbish bins at refugios are designed for toilet paper. With a limited number of power points in refugios for charging devices, packing spare batteries is a good idea.

Step 5: Nail the trail

Be adaptable to conditions to get the most out of your journey.

Days on the trail can be long on a four-day hike; set out by 8am in autumn and spring to arrive in camp well before nightfall. If you’ve booked meals, most refugios have two sittings; book the first sitting when you arrive in camp each day to ensure an early night, and early start the next morning.

On foggy days, reconsider rising early to hike to Mirador las Torres for sunrise. You might also wish to reassess the mostly uphill return hike from Mirador Francés to Mirador Británico (the middle arm of the “W”) in poor weather, though I hiked the latter in average conditions and enjoyed it, particularly as I spotted a pair of endangered huemul deer right below Mirador Británico. Consider leaving non-essentials in a dry bag at Italiano (a CONAF-run camp not currently open for overnight stays) on your way up, as you’ll pass this camp again on your way back down.

If you’re making good time between Paine Grande and Valle Francés (French Valley), consider veering off the main path to hike the lesser-tramped alternative trail around the slightly more scenic eastern side of Lago Skottsberg, which adds about 30 minutes to the trip. Turn left at the first bridge after Italiano if you’re coming from the east, and head right at the fork after the first bridge you cross if you’re coming from Paine Grande.

If I could do it all again…

I booked a last-minute four-day through-hike package on my first W Trek experience. I hiked east to west in March 2022, and camped at Central, Cuernos and Paine Grande, and this itinerary was perfect for me. I’ve since hiked sections of the trail on a guided multi-day, multi-sport tour with Chile Nativo, with superb perspectives on Torres del Paine that complemented my first experience.

If I were to do the W Trek again, I’d aim to tackle the extended version of the trail called the O Circuit, ideally in late September, as I found the weather superb and the crowds thin when I visited then. I’d cut costs by making independent bookings, and I’d book my meals again (though extra comforts are not available at all refugios on the O Circuit).

Since my feet were soaking from the second day onward, I’d also wear waterproof boots; pack fewer snacks, as the boxed lunches were sufficient; and go easier on the Carménère (Chilean red wine) at the refugio bars. Did I mention you can order pisco sours, too?
