Oprah Winfrey missed out on some book club fun after a stomach illness landed the media mogul in the emergency room.

Winfrey, who revealed Tuesday that "Familiaris" by  David Wroblewski is the latest selection for Oprah's Book Club , was forced to sit out an interview with Wroblewski on “CBS Mornings” due to a recent case of gastroenteritis. The digestive infection, caused by inflammation of the stomach and intestine, is characterized by symptoms including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea, according to Cleveland Clinic .

“Ms. Winfrey is recovering following a stomach virus and received an IV due to dehydration at the recommendation of her doctor,” a representative for Winfrey told USA TODAY in an emailed statement Tuesday. “She is resting and feeling better every day.”

Winfrey’s longtime friend and “CBS Mornings” co-host Gayle King opened up about the talk show icon’s “very serious” illness during her interview with Wroblewski .

Oprah Winfrey shares book club pick: Media mogul says 'Familiaris' by David Wroblewski 'brilliantly' explores life's purpose

"She had some kind of stomach thing — stomach flu — stuff was coming out of both ends,” King said. “I won't get too graphic. But needless to say, she ended up in the hospital (with) dehydration (and) had to get an IV.”

King added: "She will be OK. I hope she's not mad at me for sharing that detail."

In a video call with King shared on Instagram , Winfrey explained she sought hospital care because she “couldn’t keep enough water down” to stay hydrated.

But the former “Oprah Winfrey Show” host remained optimistic about her condition. “I’m on my way to 100,” she said.

Winfrey’s book club pick “Familiaris” serves as the follow-up to Wroblewski’s 2008 debut "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle," which was also highlighted by Oprah’s Book Club.

Winfrey said the "epic novel" goes on a journey that "brilliantly interweaves history, philosophy, adventure and mysticism to explore the meaning of love, friendship and living your life's true purpose."

Star Wars characters visit young patients at Loma Linda University Children's Hospital

By Matthew Rodriguez

June 11, 2024 / 6:56 PM PDT / KCAL News

Kids at the Loma Linda University Children's Hospital met some iconic characters from the Star Wars franchise on Monday.

The volunteer fan organization called the 501st Legion  and the hospital partnered with the Big Hearts for Little Hearts Loma Linda Guild to put together this special event.

The international organization is dedicated to crafting screen-accurate costumes of Stormtroopers, Scout Troopers, and other uniformed characters in the sci-fi series. The costumed characters use their love for Star Wars to carry out fundraising events, charity work and volunteering. They distributed books, stuffed lions, light sabers and crafts to patients in the cardiology, oncology and isolation units.

Kids and their families in the first two wards could take pictures with their guests. However, the patients in the isolation were able to wave and say hello to the Stormtroopers.

"The visit was particularly special for these patients, who are often unable to participate in group activities due to health restrictions. Their combined efforts provided a memorable day for the children and a reminder of the support and kindness surrounding them," hospital staff said in a statement.

‘Sit My Black A— Down’: Four Tops Lead Singer Sues Hospital, Offered a $25 Gift Card After Being Racially Profiled and Placed In Straitjacket During ER Visit

Alexander Morris, the lead singer of Motown Records’ The Four Tops, has filed a federal lawsuit against Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital in Warren, Michigan. He claims doctors wrongfully placed him in restraints and ordered a psychological evaluation, alleging his institutionalization was racially motivated.

Morris, 53, represented by attorneys Maurice Davis and Jasmine Rand, filed the complaint on June 10 in the Eastern District of Michigan. The lawsuit names the hospital, Nurse Holly Jackson, and security guard Greg Ciesielski as defendants.

four tops singer files racial discrimination suit

The complaint states that in April 2023, Morris, experiencing chest pain and difficulty breathing, requested additional security due to his fame. He alleges racial discrimination and false imprisonment after medical professionals labeled him “delusional.”

Despite offering his identification, Morris claims a white security guard told him to “sit his Black ass down” and, when he refused, placed him in a straitjacket. The lawsuit asserts that nursing staff did not intervene to stop the racial discrimination and mistreatment, including taking Morris off oxygen for a psychiatric evaluation.

To prove he was not delusional, Morris, who joined the group in 2018, showed a nurse a video of him performing at the Grammys, the complaint states. Subsequently, the staff canceled the evaluation, removed the restraints, and returned him to oxygen after about 90 minutes. The hospital then offered Morris a $25 gift card, which he refused.

In a statement through his lawyers, Morris described the experience as “terrifying” and criticized the hospital for violating his civil rights but denying him his basic dignity.

“The hospital denied my identity and my basic human dignity and then offered me a gift card,” Morris said in a statement, according to The New York Times.

He further condemned the hospital’s response, noting the security guard was not fired, and expressed his intent to hold the hospital accountable and combat racism in health care.

“I see all of these posts on social media like ‘driving while Black,’ ‘walking while Black,’ but I never imagined I would become a victim of ‘being sick while Black,’” Morris continued , according to Statnews.com.

“The hospital never fired the security guard that told me to sit my Black a— down,” the statement added. “Clearly they condone racism. I filed the lawsuit to hold the hospital accountable for the way I was treated and to protect the younger generations from racism in healthcare.”

After the lawsuit was filed, social media chimed in, asking , “how in today’s world does it not occur to people to take 10 seconds to google the 4 tops.”

“This is unbelievable I’ve worked in health care WTF stopped staff from checking the wiki on the Four Tops and matching the info to his ID? (trick question. it was the antiBlackness),” one X user tweeted .

Of you were looking for THE most egregious example of racism this week (I realize it's only Tuesday), this is it. Alexander Morris, a member of Motown's Four Tops, got put in a psych ward instead of being treated for chest pains. He's lucky he didn't die. https://t.co/XIjOYGBz61 — Victoria Brownworth (@VABVOX) June 11, 2024

“Their job was to treat him FIRST. Im sure he had ID and insurance,” someone blasted . “They could validate his celebrity status later.”

Another wrote , “One would have to be pretty confident in their Four Tops knowledge to do this. Or racist.”

“#AlexanderMorris of the #FourTops when he tries to get ER treatment at #Ascension Macomb Oakland Hospital. This place has been an abusive sh*thole for a VERY LONG TIME. Sue their MF pants off, man. Best wishes, Mr. Morris! So sorry you suffered through that horrible mistreatment,” one more comment read .

Another added, “Looks like a hospital may soon be owned by a member of the Four Tops.”

While many were outraged that no one took the time to research his celebrity claim, immediately suggesting that he was mentally ill, others were outraged by the consolation offer.

Heres the biggest kick in the crotch in the whole story pic.twitter.com/Fpii38E1LR — JC (@jcorriv35) June 11, 2024

The hospital also released a statement, “We remain committed to honoring human dignity and acting with integrity and compassion for all persons and the community. We do not condone racial discrimination of any kind.”

Reportedly, Ciesielski died five months after the incident due to a ruptured aorta. The lawsuit does not mention his death.

The Four Tops continues to perform, maintaining a legacy despite changes in its lineup. Its only surviving original member, Abdul Fakir, 88, invited Morris to join the group in 2018 to replace Harold Bonhart, who replaced Theo Peoples, who replaced Levi Stubbs (the original lead singer).

Morris started with Fakir and two other newer members performing in 2019, a year before the world shut down for COVID, and some argue that it is plausible that he was too new of a member for the average music fan to know he was part of the group.

Motown Singer Sues Hospital That Allegedly Labeled Him ‘Delusional’ During Scary ER Visit

Four Tops crooner Alexander Morris claims he was physically restrained and deprived of necessary treatment - until his wife showed them a video of him performing at the Grammys.

The lead singer of Motown group The Four Tops is suing a Detroit-area hospital over allegations that staffers “assumed he was mentally ill” and put him in a straight jacket when he informed them that he was a famous musician.

Man Who Broke Into Bun B's Home Sentenced to 40 Years After Rapper Delivers Emotional Testimony

Trending on billboard.

“Plaintiff had a valid identification on his person and could easily have been identified as a singer in the Four Tops group,” attorneys for Morris’ write. “Defendant hospital  … blatantly refused to provide plaintiff with medical treatment due to his race and/or perceived mental disability.”

Eventually, Morris says, his wife arrived and learned “that the doctors thought he was delusional.” When he was able to show a nurse a “video of him performing at the Grammys,” he says the hospital finally agreed to cancel the psych evaluation. He was ultimately diagnosed with heart infraction – and offered what he says was an insulting mea culpa.

“Plaintiff was offered a $25.00 gift card to Meijers as an apology for the dehumanization and discrimination he faced at the hands of the hospital,” the singer’s attorneys write. “He refused to accept the gift card.”

Founded in the early 1950s, The Four Tops roared to widespread success in the 1960s and fueled the rise of the growing Motown record company. The original lineup, consisting of Levi Stubbs, Abdul “Duke” Fakir, Renaldo “Obie” Benson and Lawrence Payton, stuck together for more than 40 years and are enshrined in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Fakir is the sole original member still in the group.

Morris, who joined the group in 2019, had already publicized his alleged ordeal in the past. Last spring, he threatened to sue over the alleged incident, claiming that it would have taken “two minutes” to verify his identity: “My health should’ve been first.”

In a statement to Billboard on Tuesday, a spokesperson for hospital owner Ascension said the company was “unable to provide details on cases under investigation.”

“The health, safety and well-being of our patients, associates and community members remains our top priority,” the spokesperson said. “We remain committed to honoring human dignity and acting with integrity and compassion for all persons and the community. We do not condone racial discrimination of any kind.”

Four Tops singer says hospital put him in straitjacket after not believing he was in Four Tops

Alexander Morris sings on stage

The lead singer of Motown's legendary Four Tops has sued a Michigan hospital claiming racial discrimination after staff members assumed he was “delusional” when he said he was in the group and placed him in a restraining jacket.

Alexander Morris, 53, who is Black and joined the iconic vocal quartet in 2018, went to Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital in Warren on April 7, 2023, with “clear symptoms of cardiac distress.”

He had difficulty breathing and chest pain, and he was placed on oxygen, said the federal lawsuit, filed Monday in the Eastern District of Michigan.

However, when he informed a nurse and a security guard in the emergency room that he was a member of the Four Tops and had security concerns because of stalkers and fans, they didn't believe him, the suit says. Instead, a doctor ordered a psychological evaluation, and he was restrained for at least an hour and a half, it says.

The suit accuses the hospital and two staffers — a nurse and a security guard — of negligence, racial discrimination, battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

“It was a terrifying experience to be in the middle of a medical emergency, to be placed into restraints, to have my oxygen turned off, my personal effects taken from me, and no help from the doctors and nurses because of the color of my skin. Racial profiling nearly cost me my life," Morris said in a statement his attorneys released Tuesday.

Morris had a “significant known history of cardiac disease,” including the placement of stents and defibrillator, the suit said.

During his hospitalization, he was ultimately diagnosed “with a heart [infarction] that may require a heart transplant, pneumonia, and he suffered three seizures during his stay.”

However, his treatment was delayed because hospital staffers didn't believe he was part of the famed Four Tops group.

After check-in, a nurse, a white security guard and a white male emergency room doctor “racially profiled him” and “wrongfully assumed he was mentally ill when he revealed his identity as a celebrity figure,” the complaint says.

He was told he'd get a psychological evaluation “because they did not believe he was a singer or member of the Four Tops.”

Hospital staff members decided to remove Morris from oxygen and pursued a psychiatric evaluation instead of considering his ' symptoms and significant medical history, the filing says.

The suit says a security guard was instructed to ensure Morris was placed in a restraining jacket and that his belongings were removed.

Morris asked whether he could prove his identity by showing his identification card, and the white male security guard ordered him to “sit his Black ass down,” the complaint says. Despite the comment, none of the nursing staffers intervened to stop the racial discrimination, the filing says.

The suit says Morris was ignored when he told staff members he was struggling to breathe and requested the oxygen back. It also alleges he was ignored when he asked for the restraint device to be removed and to get his belongings back so he could seek treatment at another hospital.

“He was told he was not free to leave; thus, he was falsely imprisoned and deprived of his personal property. During this time his medical condition continuously declined and he was denied the medical treatment he desperately needed,” the suit says.

Morris’ wife went to the nursing station to collect his belongings and saw what was happening, according to the filing.

She informed one of the security officers that he actually was a member of the Four Tops, the complaint says. A nurse went to Morris’ side, and he asked to show the nurse a video of him performing at the Grammys, it says. It was then that the nurse realized he actually was a member of Four Tops and informed the emergency room doctor, according to the filing. When the doctor returned, he said he was canceling the psychological evaluation, it says.

The restraint jacket was finally removed, and Morris was placed back on oxygen after being restrained for “approximately an hour and a half or 90 minutes,” the complaint says.

Morris was offered a $25 gift card to Meijer as an apology, which he refused, it says.

The ordeal delayed Morris’ treatment despite his severe condition and caused him “severe mental and psychological suffering,” the suit says.

The suit alleges racial discrimination, violation of civil rights, negligence, gross negligence, battery, false imprisonment, intentional infliction of emotional distress and violation of the Americans With Disabilities Act.

It seeks more than $75,000 in damages at a jury trial.

“I see all of these posts on social media like ‘driving while black,’ ‘walking while black,’ but I never imagined I would become a victim of ‘being sick while Black,’” Morris said in his statement. “I filed the lawsuit to hold the hospital accountable for the way I was treated and to protect the younger generations from racism in healthcare.”

An Ascension Hospital spokesperson said Tuesday: “We do not condone racial discrimination of any kind. We will not comment on pending litigation.”

“The health, safety and well-being of our patients, associates and community members remains our top priority. We remain committed to honoring human dignity and acting with integrity and compassion for all persons and the community,” the spokesperson added.
