This electrolyte powder is used by athletes and firefighters to rehydrate quickly — it also helps me curb dehydration from alcohol, workouts, and sickness

  • While we may brush off dehydration as an easily preventable problem caused by a hard workout or alcohol consumption, it can be a life-threatening issue in other parts of the world.
  • DripDrop is an oral rehydration solution (ORS) originally created by a doctor to treat victims of cholera. It follows formulation guidelines set by UNICEF and the WHO and tastes better than previous forms of ORS.
  • In addition to cholera and natural disaster victims, it's used by firefighters, the military, and athletes to quickly replenish lost fluids.
  • DripDrop is also suitable for you and me. The individual powder packets contain essential electrolytes (and half the sugar of sports drinks) to help you recover from sickness, a workout, heat exposure, or a hangover.

Insider Today

When you're dehydrated, you notice. You're thirsty, restless, and moody, and you might even faint. Whether you've just completed a tough workout or woken up after a Friday night out , the first thing you probably do to replenish those lost fluids is reach for water or an electrolyte drink.

While these instances of dehydration aren't usually life-threatening, the creator of electrolyte powder DripDrop has encountered plenty of other situations where it was. After witnessing a cholera outbreak in Guatemala, where children were throwing up from the bad taste of existing oral rehydration solutions (ORS), Dr. Eduardo Dolhun wanted to create an ORS that was both effective and tasty.

What exactly is an ORS and how does it work?

ORS stands for "oral rehydration solution" and is a balanced glucose-electrolyte mixture. It was first created in the late 1960s to treat the effects of cholera (vomiting and diarrhea) in Bangladesh and India. The mix of salts, sugar, and water work to counter dehydration symptoms by triggering water absorption in the small intestine. Through osmosis, sodium and glucose transport water from the gut into the bloodstream.

Today, the World Health Organization and UNICEF recommend a specific ORS formulation  for effective treatment of clinical dehydration.

DripDrop as an ORS

DripDrop follows this recommended formula and comes in single-serving sticks in three flavors (watermelon, lemon, and berry). Each 10-gram serving contains 35 calories and seven grams of sugar, which is half the sugar of a comparable serving of a sports drink like Gatorade.

Since its introduction, DripDrop has been used to treat dehydration in the victims of natural disasters like the 2010 Haiti earthquake and Pakistan floods .

The ORS is also carried by firefighters, US military medics and troops, and athletes. It's " Certified for Sport " by NSF International, a program trusted by the MLB, NHL, NFL, and PGA, among other sports organizations.

Trying DripDrop for ourselves

All these high-intensity uses of DripDrop have us reassured of its efficacy — if it's being used to save children's lives and fuel professional athletes, it's good enough to use on our sick and hungover days.

Since it comes in individual packs, it's convenient to store in my bag or desk. As long as I have access to water, I can make myself an electrolyte drink and rehydrate myself. I always drink water throughout and after my workouts, but I noticed that taking DripDrop helps me recover even faster.  I also like that it tastes as good as a sports drink, but isn't as caloric or sugary.

My editor also found it to be helpful as she recovered from a bout of the stomach flu, which left her nauseous and dehydrated. She said the taste wasn't overwhelming, even when her stomach and palate were sensitive.

The bottom line

DripDrop is a highly effective dehydration solution that's used all over the world for a variety of purposes. It's the best way you can replenish lost fluids, and this effect comes with no compromises — it's convenient to make and drink, it's healthier than sports drinks, and it tastes good.

Size of Bottle Not Clear

Unfortunately had to knock a star off :-( The size of the actual bottle is misleading. After previously buying Dream Drops, which turned up in 30ml bottle, I believe the Orange Blossom & Chamomile would be the same. It is not, it is half the size 15ml. On another note TRIP products being sold on the Holland & Barrett website make the size of the bottle completely obvious. I still think TRIP products are great just a little disappointed that the size of bottle isn't clear.

Bought the Trip elderflower mint drink

Bought the Trip elderflower mint drink. I know it says mint but it is so overwhelming mint and there is a bitter aftertaste. Not pleasant

Avoid at all costs

Avoid at all costs, cbd oil ordered and hidden subscription, somewhere in the small print apparently. Tryed to cancel and was told can't return, must be desperate for orders. Anyway this stuff definitely gives you bad headaches, and doesn't supply lab reports. Avoid avoid avoid

Wonderful Brand

Trip is such a wonderful brand that really has brought more calm and presence into my life. My favourite of the drinks are the Lemon & Basil CBD can (great with pasta dishes or over ice on a hot day), and the Raspberry & Orange Blossom 'calm down' can, which really helps me to relax and drift off at night (don't be put off by the apple cider vinegar smell - it doesn't taste of it!). I recently switched from the 1,000mg CBD oil at night to the 3,000mg Dream Drops. When I first ordered the Dream Drops, I was disappointed that the price was so much higher and didn't seem to truly reflect the strength increase. When my order arrived, the bottle was significantly larger than my previous 1,000mg bottles, and the bottle lasts twice as long! I struggle with insomnia and unrefreshed sleep due to fibromyalgia and surgical menopause, but the Dream Drops have really helped to improve my sleep. I can't wait to try the magnesium-blend drinks, and I'd love to see more lifestyle accessories in the future!

Superb customer service

Had a few of their drinks from supermarkets and they taste amazing so I thought I buy it from their website. Sadly I had issues with the deliveries but their customer service team is absolutely brilliant and after all the inconvenience, I still highly recommend them and their drinks/oils!

Date of experience : 03 May 2024

Love these drinks

Love these drinks! Love having the subscription turn up, and it's really easy to skip a month if needed like I did when I went away. I don't love the shipping they use Huboo which was unhelpful with a delivery query but the products themselves are fab.

Date of experience : 08 April 2024

So far so good 😊

Taken the plunge to come off of my anxiety tablets (at medical advice) But I still have dull days. Just received my order today, had one of the drinks and tried the orange blossom drops and within half an hour I can feel a difference! Very calming, and general life seems a lot more tolerable 😂 Will judge long term and update! Thanks Trip!

Date of experience : 02 February 2024

Fabulous Customer Service

I haven't received my first order yet as I mistakenly auto filled my old address in delivery details. Contacted customer services and offered to pay any additional delivery charges - Olive came back very quickly to say they'd happily send me a new box out free of charge. What brilliant CS!! Thank you Trip

Date of experience : 09 January 2024

Funky taste but amazing nights sleep

I’ve tried the other trip drinks and not been taken with them, they didn’t do the job replacing alcohol. got the heavier one and despite being quite shocked by the taste ( it’s like vinegar with sugar in it) I had an amazing nights sleep and woke up really rested. It only works for me if I take a magnesium with it. Without it nothing happens. It does have magnesium in it but obviously not enough for me. The funky taste grows on you especially as you know you’re going to get a great nights sleep. I have no problem falling asleep but I’ve always woken up in the night. I didn’t buy it to help with sleep so I’m very pleasantly surprised.

Date of experience : 25 February 2024

Absolutely love these drinks!

Absolutely love these drinks! I'm not a fan of normal fizzy drinks or flavoured waters and get very bored with plain water to drink. These are fab if you want something that maybe tastes a bit like a cocktail (pour over ice and enjoy!) and help chill you out a bit. Also a great alternative if you're not wanting to drink anything alcoholic but want something a bit tasty that's not sweet or boring!

Reply from TRIP Drinks

We're so happy to hear you enjoyed them Jane 💛

Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.

I’m now a regular customer of Trip having found nothing but amazing benefits from using their CBD oil to control my anxiety. It’s not a cure but it does dissipate those awful butterflies enough for you to get hold of things in a natural and far more beneficial way. Have been recommending Trip to my friends and family too. The drinks are also a really nice and refreshing addition to your more stressful days. Take a deep breath, breathe deeply and enjoy your Trip.xx

We're so happy to hear this Sophie! Thank you for sharing your experience 😍

Thank you, Trip!

I have no idea what I'd do without my trip! Really gentle way to mellow out in times of stress/ busyness/ wanting to wind down. Love the dosage options and flavours available, alongside the extra ingredients to enhance CBDs natural effect. Plus- you can't go wrong with pink packaging !

Pink is always a winner Natasha! Thank you for sharing this review :)

I love this product, my favourite is the elderflower and mint, I’ve tried all the others and that’s the one I like best. A great alternative to alcohol and a different way to unwind

Outstanding customer service

Outstanding customer service! The products they sell of the best quality. Tastes really good! No nasty ingredients. 5* all the way! Highly recommend to try if out you still haven’t.

First time trying Trip

Tried Trip for the first time after getting a promotional code for signing up for a monthly subscription. I got the pack of 6, with the 3 different flavours, the mint and elderflower takes some getting used to but the peach and ginger is lovely! I’m not sure I felt the full effect after 1 can so I’m keeping my subscription to up my intake and see what happens. Great price though for a great product and delivered earlier than expected too.

Date of experience : 22 August 2023

Thank you so much for the feedback Louise! Dosing is really personal - similar to how caffeine or alcohol can affect everyone differently. Feel free to start with a lower regular dose (15-30MG per serving) then note how you feel and top up with additional drinks or oils if needed. For context, our CBD drinks contain 15MG per can, our 300MG CBD oils contain 20MG per dropper, and our 1000MG oils contain 66MG per dropper 💛

CBD newbie... A lifetime convert

Great introductory offer and what a great company and product. Delivery was fast, the product itself is superb quality. The subscription is easy to change and good value for money. Never tried cbd before but the calm it gives without tiredness or brain fog is tremendous. I don't think I'll ever stop taking it, but it's helped bin the alcohol.

Date of experience : 11 September 2023

So happy we can be helping you to find your calm Lucie!

Brilliant alternative to alcohol!

Absolutely love Trip drinks and so pleased there’s now a subscription service with a lower price. Also really pleased with the new Duo drinks packs with Elderflower & Mint and Lemon & Basil (Ginger and Peach is nice, but you can’t taste the peach at all… so my least favourite of the 3). Also to say, I now reach for these instead of wine and they’ve played a significant part in keeping me booze free.

Welcome to The Calm Club! What a great review to receive, thank you so much for sharing!

I love these drinks as an anytime daily…

I love these drinks as an anytime daily drink but also a substitute for alcohol. I felt the benefits of the CBD oil after using it over a few weeks, mainly to sleep quality and a calmer mood! As a nutritionist @nourishedforlife I look for quality ingredients and Trip ticked many boxes for me, in fact I recommend it to my clients! ✌🏼

Date of experience : 15 September 2023

So glad you're enjoying and recommending to your clients Kam!

Good experience of products and service

I took advantage of an introductory package and am enjoying trying the TRIP drops and drinks. I am particularly impressed with the drinks which are unusual but sophisticated flavours and I have noticed that I feel like I am having an indulgent treat when I open one and relax in the evening. I feel calm and "at one with the world" without that heavy fuzzy feeling from alcohol. My favourite is the Elderflower and Mint. I would certainly recommend the drinks. Its hard to comment on the drops as its only my first week but I will keep using them and then see whether to reorder.

Thank you so much the amazing feedback Jacqueline 💛

Great cbd oil. Great company

I've been using the orange blossom and chamomile 1000mg cbd oil at night to help with sleep. I find it is really good and helps relax me. The company are brilliant. I ordered another bottle in the afternoon, the following lunchtime it was delivered! I would definitely recommend. I was a bit sceptical at first, but glad I've given it a try.

Tiny Little Changes

TRIP CBD Oil Review: Worth Buying – Or Not?

Trip CBD Oil

CBD has become a pretty massive deal over recent years. A recent survey showed that 29% of UK residents have now tried CBD products. This is unsurprising when they’re so ubiquitous on almost every high street. Even household names like Boots and Holland and Barrett sell CBD nowadays.

I published a review of Trip CBD drinks some time ago. I now follow that with this Trip CBD Oil review. But before I get into it, I shall tell you a little about my own experience with CBD, and add a few (perhaps controversial) opinions about the CBD industry in general. Let’s begin.

The CBD Marketplace

Anybody keen to learn about the benefits of CBD soon discovers that it’s all a bit of a minefield. It’s a crowded market with a lot of lofty claims, and no shortage of – frankly – garbage products that are not worth the money.

I was something of an “early adopter” when it comes to CBD. I’ve been using a wide range of products on an (almost) daily basis for several years. I’m also an obsessive researcher, and have spent many many hours learning about the technicalities of how CBD works, dosages, and the meaning of mysterious terms like “isolate” and “full spectrum.” (More on those in a moment).

A side effect of this is that, over recent years, I’ve found myself in many high street shops being told absolute nonsense about some of the CBD products on sale. You really do have to do your research to ensure you end up with products that provide genuine benefit. (A spoiler for this Trip CBD Oil review is that Trip is one of the more decent ones, but we’ll come to that in a minute!)

I suspect a fair few of the 29% of Brits who have tried CBD have ended up disappointed – not because it wouldn’t ever work for them, but because they were using a crappy product, or something with a dosage so low it would be unlikely to do anything useful.

I guess the above should serve as some reassurance that I know what I’m talking about then it comes to CBD. Let’s talk a little about how it’s helped me, and why I continue to take it.

CBD Benefits – And My Experiences

Much has been written about the mental and physical health benefits of using CBD. I must mention that I’m not making any health claims whatsoever, and can only comment on my own experiences.

Healthline lists the following as health benefits of CBD, based on research:

  • Better sleep.
  • Reduced pain and inflammation.
  • Better heart health.
  • Relief from IBD symptoms.
  • Reduced anxiety and depression.

Personally, my two main reasons for using CBD are to relieve anxiety, which I struggle with, and to help with sleep and insomnia.

CBD has helped enormously with my sleep. I feel that it helps me to relax, and definitely helps to “take the edge off”, allow me to unwind in the evening, and (sometimes) ease my racing thoughts.

I say sometimes, because CBD isn’t a miracle cure. If my anxiety is particularly high, CBD can relieve it, but it won’t cure it. Most of the time, CBD helps me get a really good, solid nights sleep, and also helps me drift off much more easily. But every now and then I’ll still get one of my insomnia nights – they’re just much rarer these days.

I’ll come back to some more general discussion around CBD later in this Trip CBD review – but let’s get on and talk about the product.

Trip CBD Oil Review: First Impressions

Trip has become a very successful UK CBD brand. When I first tried Trip drinks, I ordered them online, but you now see them all over the place. Both the drinks and the oil are now stocked in Holland and Barrett, and you can find all of Trip’s products on Amazon UK .

I personally like Trip’s branding and packaging. It feels premium, and I particularly like the attractive oil bottles (although a little see-through section so you could see how much is left would perhaps make sense!)

Trip CBD Oil Bottle

Interestingly, I happened upon an animated Facebook discussion recently, where a few people were criticising Trip’s choice of brandname. They felt that the word “Trip” had negative, drug-related connotations. I guess it’s a point of debate, but it all seemed a little silly to me. We’re all grown-ups and Trip’s wellbeing focused marketing certainly doesn’t seem to point to psychoactive effects. Anybody looking for such will be sorely disappointed with any CBD products available in the UK!

Trip CBD Oil: Ingredients and Credentials

Trip CBD Oil is made from “the highest quality, vegan, gluten-free CBD.”

Fair enough – I mean it’s not as if any CBD has meat or gluten in it, but it’s still a true statement!

Trip also adds botanicals such as ginseng, turmeric and and chamomile to its CBD oil. This is something I’m seeing more and more in CBD products these days. With Trip, it certainly has a flavour benefit, as I talk about below. Beyond that, I’ve not noticed anything tangibly different, effects-wise, compared to other CBD products.

Trip uses “premium CBD derived from hemp” and is made in the UK. The company’s website says that all products are third-party lab tested, and that people can get in touch with any questions. Lab certificates are not availabel on the Trip website, or at least not that I found.

Is Trip CBD Oil Full Spectrum, Broad Spectrum or Isolate?

The ingredients on the bottle of Trip CBD oil I have in front of me state:

  • MCT Oil (from coconuts).
  • Natural mint flavouring.
  • Chamomile extract.

What it doesn’t state is whether the CBD is full spectrum, broad spectrum or CBD isolate.

In case you’re wondering what on earth I’m banging on about, here’s a quick explanation.

Full spectrum CBD products include not just CBD, but a whole host of other cannabinoids – usually including a (legal) trace amount of THC – the bit of cannabis that gets you high.

This doesn’t mean that a full-spectrum CBD product will get you high, but many people believe that this closeness to how nature intended it creates an “entourage effect,” delivering the effects of CBD at their best.

(For what it’s worth, I do tend to find that full spectrum products often provide the most notable “effects” (such as they are), such as a notable onset of relaxation. However, no legal CBD product in the UK gets you “high.”

Broad Spectrum is essentially the same as full spectrum, but with all of the THC removed.

Isolate is usually 99+% pure CBD – and best for those who want to avoid even the tiniest trace of THC and other cannabinoids. It’s CBD in its purest form – which is either a benefit or disadvantage depending on your viewpoint.

I’m guessing that Trip CBD oil is isolate-based. I’ve contacted the company to confirm, and will update this review as soon as I know.

Trip CBD Review: My Experiences

I’ve used both varieties of Trip CBD oil (Wild Mint and Chamomile and Orange Blossom and Chamomile) over a period of several months. In both incidences, I’ve chosen the stronger 1000mg variety, over the weaker 300mg. (I discuss dosage below).

I usually take somewhere between half and two-thirds of a dropper when I’m relaxed in bed and almost ready to sleep. I find that Trip’s oil sees me drifting off very quickly once it’s kicked in – usually after 30-45 minutes.

Trip CBD Oil bottles

I almost always sleep very well after taking CBD. I also tend to have very vivid dreams. This can be a good or a bad thing. I recently suffered a bereavement and my mind had a lot to process. Vivid is good when the dreams are good – but not so much when they’re bad! However, I did some Googling and found out many positive benefits of the subconcious processing things when we sleep. I now take more of a “bring it on” attitude to my dreams – whatever they turn out to be.

I do also find that I often tend to wake up feeling nice and chilled after using Trip’s CBD – which is lovely on a Saturday or Sunday morning.

One thing I particularly like about Trip’s CBD oil is the taste. I don’t mind the earthy cannabis taste that you get from some CBD oils, but some people hate it, and it’s not always what you want. I particularly like Trip’s Wild Mint variety, because I can use it after brushing my teeth without immediately wanting to brush again!

I tend to use CBD oil as a bed time thing (I prefer gummies and vapes for any daytime use, which is only occasional for me). Mileage will inevitably vary for treating conditions like stress, anxiety, depression and IBS.

A Word on Dosage

Each full dropper of Trip’s strong variety contains approximately 66mg of CBD.

CBD dosage is an incredibly personal thing. Some people claim to have positive results after three drops of a weak oil, others claim to need much more. The UK Food Standards Agency has recently started recommending a maximum of 70mg per day.

I’m not sure what science that’s based on. Clinical studies have used daily dosages of anything from 20mg to a staggering 1500mg per day.

For what it’s worth, I take somewhere between 25mg and 70mg per day usually. However, that’s not advice on a recommended dosage for you .

There are two other things that cloud the dosage debate even further. They’re both a bit scientific, but if you really want CBD to work for you, it’s worth doing some study.

The first is bioavailability. This is all about how much CBD actually gets into your system depending on how you consume it. Vaping CBD, for example, delivers far more of the active ingredient than a swallowed product. That’s why many people recommend taking oil by leaving it under your tongue for a minute or so before swallowing. (This is a good primer on bioavailability ).

Even more technical is the fact that CBD seems to work on “an inverted U-shaped dose-response curve.” As I understand it, that means that there’s an optimal dose for everybody, and both too little and too much can mean missing that optimal dose.

How the above seems to translate for me is that while the “right” dose of CBD can make me relaxed and perhaps even sleepy, too much doesn’t make me more relaxed or sleepy. It can go the other way, and I go beyond sleepy and into energised.

What I’m saying here – perhaps in a rather long-winded way – is that you really do have to find your OWN dosage. There’s no easy route to that, with everybody and every body being very different.

Trip CBD: Value

The standard price for Trip CBD Oil, per 15 ml bottle is:

  • £18 for 300mg.
  • £39 for 1000mg.

This is a fair and average price for this kind of product, and it’s worth mentioning that it often seems to be on offer. (For example, the 1000mg was £25 at the time of writing this). Note that you can also save 15% and with code AFFTRIP15 using this link .

Trip CBD deserves its place in my medicine cabinet.

It feels like a… clean product in every way – from the high-end packaging to the effects. It tastes good, and not “weedy”, which is pretty rare for CBD oil. I personally find that it relaxes me and helps me to sleep and dream.

Recommended.

(Please note that while I self-purchased my first bottle of oil for this Trip CBD Oil review , the second was sent to me free of charge. My opinion cannot be bought, and these opinions are solely my own).

Trip CBD Oil Review

A good, mainstream UK CBD product. I’d like a little more transparency on lab tests and the type of CBD used, but I’m happy using this with confidence.

Thanks for the review, really helpful. You mentioned gummies, which do you recommend and how do they taste?

I have been using gummies more often recently. The ones from Orange Country CBD are worth a try. I plan to publish a review of them at some point.

Movie review: Strong performances propel road trip dramedy ‘Ezra’

Director Tony Goldwyn opens his family dramedy “Ezra” in the warm, collegial comfort of a comedy club. Max (Bobby Cannavale) perches on a stool, a handheld camera drifting closer and closer as he tells jokes about his life, including his autistic son, layering truths with punchlines, walking a tight-rope of tones. It’s an invitation from Goldwyn, and screenwriter Tony Spiridakis, to sit down and listen awhile as they unfurl this heartfelt, humorous and sometimes harrowing yarn.

It establishes right away that Max is the proud and loving father of Ezra (William A. Fitzgerald, an autistic actor making his film debut), who has no problem grappling with the realities of raising an autistic child. Throughout the events that follow, we never lose sight of that, because Max fiercely loves his son, and that understanding offers a sense of emotional safety as the plot that unfolds becomes increasingly high stakes.

It’s this place setting, as well as the strong lead performances, that allow Goldwyn to thread the needle on a story that could potentially go off the rails. “Ezra” is the story of a father, desperate to protect his son, who takes him on a cross-country road trip where they experience catharsis and healing. It’s a fairly traditional road movie formula with an autism twist. Also, the “road trip” is technically a “kidnapping,” since Max spirits Ezra out of bed from the home of ex-wife Jenna (Rose Byrne), and the film never shies away from that reality, in fact relying on this perceived danger to ramp up the dramatic tension and set characters in motion.

The kidnapping stems from a misunderstanding that spirals into an unfortunate accident, coupled with Max’s own traumatic triggers. It’s never fully explicated in the screenplay, but Max’s past mental health issues and possibly undiagnosed autism spectrum disorder are frequently alluded to, thrumming below the surface. His experience makes him an understanding father to Ezra, but also somewhat hampers his ability to properly parent his son. Upset that Ezra might be medicated with anti-psychotics and placed in a special education school, Max assesses that the doctors, pharmaceutical companies and the state are in collusion to keep himself and his son apart. He’s not necessarily wrong, but his desire to expose Ezra to the world and treat him like any other kid bumps up against Jenna’s wish to provide her son with every accommodation and suggested treatment.

Every character choice in “Ezra” is plausible because it comes from a place of emotional honesty in the script and performances. We understand why Max acts in the extreme, and also why Jenna is hesitant to call the authorities, but feels forced to do so, because their characters are well-established and perfectly performed.

It’s no surprise that longtime life partners Byrne and Cannavale have an easy chemistry, and Cannavale and Robert De Niro, who plays his gruff father, Stan, have sparkling, rapid-fire New York-accented rapport. While Cannavale holds the center as the complex Max, demonstrating his range, as well as his ability to lead a movie, De Niro, unsurprisingly, is magnetic. It’s not a huge role, but his performance is beautifully expressed.

Goldwyn has called in the big guns to set “Ezra” up for success, and in addition to Cannavale, Byrne and De Niro, he has cast supporting actors such as Vera Farmiga, Rainn Wilson, himself in a small role, and his “Ghost” co-star Whoopi Goldberg, who plays Max’s agent. She calls him when he’s on the road to Michigan to visit a friend (Wilson) at a summer camp, to let him know that he’s been booked on Jimmy Kimmel and needs to be in L.A. in a week, extending their trip even further across the country. Despite Ezra’s protestations, they head West, with Max convinced he needs his son as a good-luck charm for his set. Meanwhile, Stan and Jenna hit the road in hot pursuit, and “Ezra” becomes a dueling odd-couple road movie.

The film is an actor’s showcase , and it’s the performances that hold everything together , especially the young Fitzgerald, who is terrific as Ezra, a young man who communicates his preferences and boundaries clearly – he’s often the only character saying exactly what he means. But Goldwyn’s direction is sure-handed in navigating the complicated tone that tiptoes through comedy and pathos. He pushes his style with cinematographer Danny Moder, using those handheld close-ups for more emotionally intense moments, and imparting a sense of gritty authenticity to a story that often requires a suspended disbelief .

“Ezra” could tip into melodrama, but Goldwyn sidesteps that with a rather facile ending, seemingly skipping a story beat in the denouement. You crave one more moment to wrap things up, but sometimes it’s better to leave us wanting more , avoiding the treacle and focusing on the heart – and the humor – of the matter .

Looking for the most underrated small towns to visit in Illinois this summer? Here are 14

trip drip review

Looking for a place that's not too close, not too far and just a little off the beaten path this summer in Illinois?

Worldatlas.com  recently came out with a list of " 12 Most Underrated Towns To Visit in Illinois In 2024 ." featuring some of the state's best places to experience the everything from the great outdoors to great shopping and history.

"Beyond the major metro areas, hidden in Illinois' beautiful backcountry, are gorgeous small towns that rarely get a piece of the spotlight. From historic villages dating back centuries with conspicuous old-world architecture to riverine communities with unique, long-held traditions, these small towns in  Illinois  deserve more recognition from travelers," Worldatlas writes.

"Exploring these overlooked towns in 2024 promises visitors an authentic glimpse into a rarely-seen side of the Land of Lincoln. Whether you seek charming main streets, outdoor adventures, or a taste of small-town Midwest life, look beyond Chicago to discover Illinois's many underexplored gems."

Galena is an Illinois favorite. About three hours west of Chicago, this city just off the Mississippi River is famous for its rich history, 19th-century buildings, boutique shopping and restaurants. There's world class golf, skiing and local vineyards. Visitors can see President Ulysses S. Grant's childhood home and the historically preserved 1826 Dowling House.

Woodstock, a McHenry County city located about 35 miles northwest of Chicago, is perhaps best known by movie buffs and fans of the film "Groundhog Day," which was filmed there. The town square is home to a historic opera theatre house, which was built in 1889. Throughout the year, Woodstock hosts festivals, and fairs, summer band concerts, and farmer's markets and, of course, Groundhog Days. The Woodstock Square Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Alton is a Mississippi River city north of St. Louis, Missouri. It's famous for its limestone bluffs along the river north of the city. It's also known for being a site of the historic Lincoln-Douglas Debates, as well as being home to the world's tallest man, Robert Wadlow. Attractions include the National Great Rivers Museum, Lovejoy State Memorial, Great Rivers Scenic Route, Fast Eddie's Bon-Air, World's Tallest Man Statue, Curiosity Museum, and Argosy Casino Alton.

Geneva is the county seat of Kane County. The town is home to more than 160 unique shops and restaurants, the Kane County Cougars baseball team, Geneva History Museum and the Fabyan Villa Museum and Japanese Garden. The  Fox River Trail,  accessible from downtown Geneva, connects to Island Park and Fabyan Forest Preserve, home of a five-story Dutch windmill. Geneva's downtown has more than 100 historic buildings, including the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed P.D. Hoyt House.

Located in Hancock County on the Mississippi River near Fort Madison, Iowa, Nauvoo is a Hebrew word meaning beautiful place. The town of about 1,000 residents is home to a lot of historical buildings and Nauvoo State Park, which offers hiking, cycling, camping, and a 13-acre manmade lake named Lake Horton. other attractions include the Rheinberger House Museum and Illinois’ oldest vineyard. It's also home to the original headquarters for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Nauvoo Illinois Temple.

Located in the northern-central region of Illinois, Princeton is rich with historic architecture and natural scenic views. The town boasts two downtown retail districts that are both a step back in time offering a variety of specialty shops and businesses. Princeton is home to abolitionist Owen Lovejoy's colonial-style Lovejoy Homestead, which served as his home and part of the Underground Railroad. Princeton also is known for covered bridges.

Located in DeKalb County, Sycamore boosts a quaint downtown and tons of outdoors. The city has 19 parks where visitors can hike, bike, picnic and just enjoy the scenery before hitting up the shops, restaurants and bars. Don't miss the city's Pumpkin Festival in the fall.

Edwardsville

Edwardsville is home to the Colonel Benjamin Stephenson House, an evocative 1820 Federal home of a famous Illinois politician and plenty of other local history, as well as the 40-acre Watershed Nature Center. Children will enjoy the interactive exhibits and hands-on activities at the Edwardsville Children's Museum.

Enjoy the cobblestone streets and eclectic shops of downtown Long Grove. Long Grove is home to quaint shops and plenty of history. It's home to the Sock Monkey Museum, which houses the world's largest collection of handmade sock monkeys. Nearby Buffalo Creek Forest Preserve and Reed-Turner Woodland Nature Center provide hiking, biking and fishing.

Arthur, Illinois, is famous for having an Amish community — one of the state's oldest. unity. The small town surrounded by farmland gives visitors a glimpse inside Amish life. Visit the Illinois Amish Heritage Center to explore the culture and traditions of Amish, and then visit Yoder's Kitchen for a traditional, homemade Amish meal.

Cairo was named after Cairo, Egypt, and was known for many years as Little Egypt in southern Illinois. A river city located where the Ohio and Mississippi rivers meet, Cairo was prone to flooding, the most devastating of which took pace in 2011 when the entire city was evacuated. Today, Cairo is mostly abandoned. It's historic district remains well-preserved along with several mansions, the grand Victorian-era Magnolia Manor House and the Cairo Custom House Museum.

Vienna's Town Square is sure to please antique fans. There are a number of shops carrying household goods and decorations. With only 1,500 residents, Vienna boasts plenty of room to stretch out and escape the crowds. It's Tunnel Hill State Trail is a recreation hub for hikers, bikers, and joggers. And for birdwatchers, there's Heron Pond at Little Black Slough Nature Preserve.

Here are a couple more small towns in Illinois that didn't make Worldatlas' list this time around but definitely are worth checking out this summer.

Located in Winnebago County, Roscoe is a village of about 11,000 people and home to one of the region's most popular tourism draws — Historic Auto Attractions, 13825 Metric Road. Historic Auto Attractions is more than 80,000 square feet of exhibits including one of the largest collections of John F. Kennedy memorabilia, presidential memorabilia and world leader's limousines. The museum houses dozens of vehicles from films such as Batman, Ghostbusters and Back to the Future.

Casey is a small town located in Clark and Cumberland counties in southern Illinois. It's home to a dozen Guinness Book of World Records for world's largest items including the world's largest mailbox, wind chime and rocking chair, knitting needles, crochet hook, pitchfork, golf tee, yardstick, wooden token, Dutch wooden shoes, mailbox, pencil and birdcage. The town of about 2,400 people also is home to more than 20 other giant things spread throughout town — perfect for coming and getting fun photos with family and friends.

Tiny Terry’s Turbo Trip review

Tiny Terry's Turbo Trip

May 30, 2024.

As someone who grew up playing colourful platformers and daft rhythm games, the idea of a video game being deadly serious has never sat well with me. That’s not to say the drama of The Last of Us Part II or the heart wrenching moments of Final Fantasy IX didn’t hit me right in the feels while playing, but for the most part when a game takes itself too seriously I find my attention drifting to something more fun, fanciful, or downright silly. Nothing quite describes Tiny Terry’s Turbo Trip other than downright silly, and sometimes that’s just what the doctor ordered.

Our hero Terry has one goal in life: to make his way into space. Whereas less creative people would maybe aim for a job at NASA to achieve this, Terry reckons that by driving a car fast enough up the tower in the centre of town he can break through the atmosphere and go floating among the stars. The only problem with this genius plan is that currently Terry doesn’t own a car, which is why at the start of the game Terry is applying for a job as a taxi driver with absolutely no intention of doing this job whatsoever.

Tiny Terry's Turbo Trip

Once the interview is complete and the car is yours, Terry is sent out into the world with the overarching goal of making his way to space. To do this you’ll need to upgrade your newly acquired vehicle with a whole lot of boost, which means collecting a whole lot of junk from across the city. I’m not using the term junk here to describe a load of different collectibles you’ll need to succeed in Tiny Terry’s Turbo Trip, the most important collectible you need is simply called Turbo Junk and can be found just about everywhere.

It’ll take a while lot of Turbo Junk to be able to send Terry into space, so for the majority of the game you’ll be jumping on buildings and checking down alleyways in order to gather every last scrap of it. Terry doesn’t have a whole lot in the way of platforming abilities, but by finding the right routes to get to hard to reach places you’ll be rewarded by loads of the useful metal shards and maybe even some money.

Tiny Terry's Turbo Trip

The other important collectible in Tiny Terry’s Turbo Trip is cold hard cash, which you can use to buy all sorts of handy bits of equipment that will help you on your space quest. Things like a shovel that can be used to dig up piles of cash and junk, or a glider that helps you get to new (and hopefully fruitful) locations. Getting a new item always feels rewarding, and there’s a nice selection to gather from the junk shop.

Although the world of Tiny Terry’s Turbo Trip is thematically rather tiny, it is suitably dense with things to do. As well as just gathering bits and bobs from around the environment, there are all sorts of quests dotted around the map that will reward you with even bigger piles of junk or money. It’s a nice change of pace to play football with a fruit against school kids, or compete in a yoga dance competition, and although none of these side quests are particularly mind-blowing, they’re all nice and charming.

Tiny Terry's Turbo Trip

Although there isn’t a whole lot of intense, challenging gameplay in Tiny Terry’s Turbo Trip, the daft charm of the game absolutely makes up for it. The goofy looking characters of the world always have something funny to say, and the game made me chuckle multiple times in its short runtime. Special mention must be made to the sunbather on the beach who doesn’t realise how much he’s burning, even once his body begins actually setting on fire. Terry’s adventure is gleefully stupid, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Although I don’t have a whole lot of complaints about Tiny Terry’s Turbo Trip, there probably isn’t quite enough of it. It won’t take you long to gather all the junk you need to complete the game, and by the time you have you’ll probably have seen everything the game has to offer as well. I clocked in just over two hours before I was chilling up past the atmosphere, and if that isn’t enough for you then this isn’t the game for you.

Tiny Terry’s Turbo Trip is a silly sandbox game full of charm. Collecting bits and bobs from around the city is fun, but not as fun as interacting with its weird and wonderful inhabitants. It will be over a little too quickly for some, but for those looking for something light-hearted to break up an evening of gaming, Terry and his quest are waiting.

A fun little sandbox platformer Incredibly charming A variety of items to buy Side quests keep things fresh

Is over very quickly Not very challenging

Tiny Terry's Turbo Trip is a daft little sandbox game full of charming characters, but don't expect it to take a long time to complete.

Things to Do

Entertainment, entertainment | movie review: strong performances propel road trip dramedy ‘ezra’.

In a movie scene, actors Robert De Niro and Bobby Cannavale argue in a bar.

Every character choice in “Ezra” is plausible because it comes from a place of emotional honesty, both in the script and performances.

The film is an actor’s showcase, and it’s the performances that hold everything together, especially the young Fitzgerald, who is terrific as Ezra, a young man who communicates his preferences and boundaries clearly — he’s often the only character saying exactly what he means. But Goldwyn’s direction is sure-handed in navigating the complicated tone that tiptoes through comedy and pathos. He pushes his style with cinematographer Danny Moder, utilizing those handheld close-ups for more emotionally intense moments, and imparting a sense of gritty authenticity to a story that often requires a suspended disbelief.

“Ezra” could tip into melodrama, but Goldwyn sidesteps that with a rather facile ending, seemingly skipping a story beat in the denouement. You crave one more moment to wrap things up, but sometimes it’s better to leave us wanting more, avoiding the treacle and focusing on the heart — and the humor — of the matter.

‘Ezra’ review: Strong performances propel heartfelt road trip dramedy

Movie review.

Director Tony Goldwyn opens his family dramedy “Ezra” in the warm, collegial comfort of a comedy club. Max (Bobby Cannavale) perches on a stool, a handheld camera drifting closer and closer as he tells jokes about his life — including his autistic son — layering truths with punchlines, walking a tightrope of tones.
