The best Gozo boat tours and day trips from Malta

Boat tours to gozo from buġibba.

If you’re staying in Buġibba or close to Buġibba (for example, Qawra, Mellieħa, Xemxija, or St. Paul’s Bay), this Blue Lagoon/Gozo combo tour is a great way for you to get to see Gozo and Comino (and its Blue Lagoon) on the same day. There are two options:

  • Taking the larger catamaran with underwater windows, ladders and slides
  • Taking the smaller Sea Odyssey boat, which is also a great choice (and a little quieter)

Both boats have jumping platforms, sun loungers, changing areas, separate toilets, a bar, and even air-conditioning to cool down when needed.

You’ll see Malta’s beautiful coastline up close, with a stopover at the Blue Lagoon for some fun in the sea and sun. Then, you’ll travel to Gozo (Mgarr Harbour), where you can spend around three hours exploring and enjoying this stunning island before heading back to Bugibba.

In Gozo, you can:

  • Make your own way to a few places by taxi or hop-on/hop-off bus
  • Take organised transport to either Victoria (the main town in the centre of Gozo) or Xlendi (a picturesque bay in the South of Gozo flanked by tall cliffs).

As a side note, do remember that while the Catamaran is wheelchair accessible, Comino itself is not, so this may be an issue for some visitors. Also, a multilingual audio guide is available.

Time: Approx. 7 hours

Boat tours to Gozo from Sliema

If your accommodation is in Sliema or close-by, this round-trip cruise is a great way to make the most of the different lagoons, bays, and natural sights in Gozo while enjoying the refreshing sea breeze.

You’ll set off from Sliema and depart for this fun cruise around Gozo’s coastline. The tour will take you by Valletta, Sliema, St. Julian’s, St. Paul’s Bay and St. Paul’s Islands, Mellieħa Bay, and eventually moor at one of the secluded bays in Gozo. Here, you will enjoy time eating delicious food, sunbathing, diving, and swimming.

Following lunch, you’ll be taken to the small island of Comino. Here, you’ll anchor at the famous Blue Lagoon, where you’ll be free to relax and swim some more against the backdrop of stunning azure waters. Refresh yourself with some fresh fruit before leaving the bay and heading back to the main island.

On the boat, you’ll be provided with a morning snack, lunch, drinks, fresh fruit, and also have the availability of using the toilets and showers on board.

You can choose to be taken back to your accommodation in Malta. If you choose to get a transfer, you can book one ahead of time for a fee. A buffet with drinks is available on board, while the price also includes a cave tour by powerboat.

Price per person: €55 for the whole day for adults, with children 12 and under at €35. Fee for accommodation transfer is €6.

Time: Approx. 8 hours

Alternatively, you can take a day trip tour starting from Sliema and going Eastwards past Comino to Gozo. The trip will circle around the sister island and anchor at the Blue Lagoon for a day of beautiful sites, sun, and swimming. On the way you’ll see the beautiful Maltese and Gozitan coastlines, pass by Dwejra Bay and the famous Fungus Rock, and experience the beauty of the salt pans in Marsalforn. You’ll also pass through the popular bay with red sand, known as Ramla Bay (possibly stopping for a swim if the weather conditions allow it), and marvel at the natural awe of the imposing Ta’ Ċenċ cliffs.

Finally, the boat will drop anchor at the Blue Lagoon in Comino, where you’ll be able to enjoy the rest of your day swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the crystal clear waters.

You’ll be provided with drinks and lunch and have use of the onboard toilet and shower facilities. Furthermore, if you want to get transfer to your accommodation, you can do so by booking in advance and at an extra small fee.

Price per person: €55 for the whole day for adults, with children between 4-12 at €40. Fee for accommodation transfer is €6.

Time: Approx. 7.5 hours

Boat tours to Gozo from St. Julian’s

If you’re staying in St. Julian’s, the situation is similar to that in Valletta. However, there is no ferry to and from St. Julian’s so you will have to opt either for public buses, a taxi ride or a long (30-40 min) walk.

Most boat tours that depart at Sliema will also offer a transfer option at an additional charge, which is convenient.

To catch a bus, routes 13, 13A, 14, 16, or 22 will take you to Sliema.

On the other hand, you can also choose to make your way to the Gozo ferry in Ċirkewwa either via taxi, or by taking a bus. You’ll need to look out for bus route 222.

Boat tours to Gozo from Valletta

The nearest departure point for boat tours to Gozo from Valletta is by travelling to Sliema. You can get there easily by taking a taxi, the ferry from Valletta to Sliema, or by taking the bus.

The bus is very easy to catch from Valletta, as this is the hub of the main terminus where all buses to towns and villages around Malta leave from. You’ll need to catch bus routes 13, 13A, 14, 15, 16, 21 or 22.

On the other hand, taking the ferry from Valletta to Sliema is the better way to go as you avoid going through all the different localities and stopping at different bus stops. You can do this by going to the West-facing (Marsamxett) Harbourside of Valletta (look for Boat Street on Google Maps for exact location), where the ferry to Sliema moors. Bus 133 takes you directly at this location if you stop at ‘Mandraġġ’ bus stop.

The ferry will directly take you from one harbour in Valletta to the opposite side at the spot known as Sliema Ferries. This is ideal, as you can hop on a boat tour to Gozo from the same place.

Alternatively, you can choose to catch a bus from Valletta directly to the Gozo ferry in Ċirkewwa. Once you’re in Gozo, you can hop on a tour from the harbour in Mġarr. Apart from taking a taxi from Valletta to Ċirkewwa, you can catch the bus from the main bus terminus in Valletta. Buses 41 and 42 will take you to your destination.

malta day trip to gozo

For travellers spending only a few days in Malta, it can be easy to fill your days exploring the mainland. Whether it be wandering through historic Valletta, exploring the walled city of Mdina or heading to the fish market of Marsaxlokk, there’s no doubt that there’s plenty to occupy any Malta itinerary . For visitors that have a bit more time on their trip though, it’s certainly worth taking a Gozo day trip from Malta.

While you can certainly spend more than just one day in Gozo, this allows you to see some of the highlights of Malta’s less-visited island and give you a great introduction for a return trip.

Table of Contents

How to Get to Gozo from Malta

There are three main transport options for your day trip to Gozo from Malta: bus & ferry, car or organised tour.

By Bus & Ferry

Malta’s bus network is fantastic and a great way to get around the island if you don’t have your own transport.

To get to Gozo, you’ll first need to take a bus to the ferry terminal which is located in Cirkewwa. You can see the latest timetables and routes on Malta’s public transport website as well as through the integration on Google maps.

A single-use bus ticket costs €2.50 and is valid for two hours (including on the buses in Gozo). If you intend to use the buses a lot during your time in Malta, it’s worth considering to purchase a travel card.

Ferries to Gozo depart every 30-45 minutes and you actually don’t need to purchase a ticket when departing Malta. Instead, you’ll need to buy a return ticket when you depart from Gozo. The standard passenger fare is €4.65 and you’ll arrive at the south of Gozo in the port town of Mgarr.

Malta to Gozo Ferry

If you don’t want to be reliant on the buses in Malta, then having your own transport is a great option. Not only will you be able to get to the ferry terminal quicker, but it will also be easier to get around the island of Gozo.

The cost for taking a car onto the Gozo ferry is €15.70 which also includes a ticket for one person. Similarly to if you are buying just a passenger ticket, you’ll only need to buy your ticket on the return leg from Gozo. All other passengers in the car apart from the driver will need to purchase a passenger ticket.

There are plenty of car rental options in Malta and you can typically find the deals on Rentalcars.com. This platform aggregates prices for many major car hire options to help you get a great deal.

It’s also worth it to consider taking out excess insurance on your vehicle from iCarHireInsurance if you rent a car to avoid having to pay the sometimes hefty insurance charges from the car rental company.

If you prefer to have your day organised for you, then there are plenty of tour options to choose that offer different aspects of the highlights on Gozo.

A tour to Gozo can be a particularly good idea if you don’t have your own car and are taking a day trip to Gozo not from Valletta or Sliema where the majority of bus routes depart from.

One of the top reasons travellers want to visit Gozo is to combine Gozo and Comino in one day. This guided tour or this guided tour both involves spending an hour each at the Blue Lagoon & Crystal Lagoon on Comino before giving travellers 3 hours of free time on Gozo to explore.

These tours depart from Bugibba but will organise ground transport from other parts of Malta for a small additional fee. They also offer some transport options on the island of Gozo if you don’t want to take the local bus.

Crysyal Lagoon on Comino in Malta

If you’d prefer to explore more of Gozo rather than spending half your day swimming then there are also some great tour options for you.

This full-day jeep tour takes you to many of the highlights on the island, includes lunch and a short powerboat ride to the Blue & Crystal lagoons. This tour picks you up from your hotel where you will board the Gozo ferry and then be met by your tour guide.

This similar guided jeep tour is also a good option as it gives you even more time on the island of Gozo as it doesn’t include a visit to Comino. A hearty lunch and wine are all included.

And if you don’t want to bother with the ferry to Gozo, this full-day jeep tour includes transport from Malta on a private boat before taking you to all of the highlights of the island.

If you prefer to spend your one day in Gozo with a bit of adrenaline running through your veins then this guided quad-bike tour might be for you! You’ll get to see many of the highlights of Gozo and it includes comprehensive insurance, lunch and a powerboat ride to the Blue & Crystal lagoons.

Finally, if you’re not worried about your budget in Malta , this private guided tour is a great way to see the island in your own vehicle with a licensed guide.

Gozo Day Trip Itinerary

This Gozo itinerary includes a visit to the capital of Victoria (Rabat) and then gives travellers a few different options on how to spend their afternoon before going back to Malta.

If you have your own vehicle, you might be able to fit in two of the three options listed, however, if you’re relying on the bus network, you should just focus on one part of the island if you’re only spending a day exploring Gozo.

Victoria (Rabat)

One of the highlights of visiting the island of Gozo is exploring its beautiful capital Victoria (Rabat) — Rabat is the original Maltese name.

You can get a bus directly from the ferry terminal in Mgarr to the capital – don’t forget you can use your bus ticket from Malta if it was validated fewer than two hours ago.

In Victoria, the highlight is undoubtedly exploring the impressive Citadella complex that offers great views of the island as well as housing a number of museums such as the Gozo Museum of Archaeology and an Old Prison.

Opposite the Citadella, pay a visit to the St George’s Basilica — an impressive baroque-style church.

Victoria is also a good place to grab a bite to eat before embarking on your afternoon adventure as it has the most cafe options on the island. One great choice for lunch near the main attractions is Cafe Jubilee which serves local and international dishes in an English-style pub.

Visiting Victoria (Rabat) is a must on a Gozo day trip from Malta

Option 1: East Gozo — Temples & Beaches

If you fancy seeing some historical sites older than the pyramids of Egypt, then head to the Eastern part of the island and visit The Ġgantija Temples.

These Neolithic structures are open year-round and there is a museum that explains the historical significance of the site.

From the temples, continue heading east to Ramla Beach. This beach is one of the best on Gozo and it is easily accessible with beautiful golden sand. It is rocky when getting into the water so consider bringing water shoes if you intend to go for a swim. From Ramla Bay, there is an hourly bus that goes back to the capital of Victoria.

Ramla Beach in Gozo

Option 2: West Gozo – Hiking & Wine

If you’re a nature lover and want to explore more of Gozo’s natural beauty then take a bus 311 west to Dwerja Bay.

This bay is one of the most stunning in Malta and is the location where the famous Azure Window used to stand. From Dwejra Bay, it’s possible to go hiking north along the coastline to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

You might get thirsty after all that hiking so it’s worth planning ahead and organising a wine tasting at nearby Tal-Massar Winery.

This small boutique operation is run by Anthony, who gives guests a tour of the vineyard, explains what makes wine from Gozo unique before you get to enjoy a free-flowing tasting with some local snacks. You can contact them via e-mail or through their Facebook page to arrange a visit.

The winery is located in Gharb, not far from the western coast of Gozo and you can take the back to Victoria.

Option 3: Comino

If you want to spend your day enjoying some of the beautiful swimming spots in Malta, you can combine a visit to Gozo with taking a boat to the small island of Comino and enjoy the Blue and/or Crystal Lagoons.

In the port town of Mgarr, you’ll find many small boat operators willing to take you out to the island and there’s even the option of renting your own small boat.

Both the Blue & Crystal Lagoon do get busy, particularly in the summer months so if you do have the option of getting there early then I suggest taking advantage of that.

The Blue Lagoon in Malta

Dinner in Gozo

The last ferry from Gozo back to Malta departs at 23:15 so there’s no need to rush back the main island and instead you should take advantage of some of the amazing restaurants in Gozo. And while Malta is located in Southern Europe, its British past means eating dinner at 6 or 7 pm isn’t a problem!

One option is to have dinner in Victoria where there are several great restaurants such as Maldonado . This will also allow you to have an evening stroll in the Citadella and see it all lit up.

Another option is to head back to Mgarr where the ferry departs from and instead enjoy dinner there. Ta’ Tona is one of the best restaurants that we ate during our time in Malta and it has a range of local dishes and freshly caught fish.

Mgarr itself is a nice small town and pleasant to wander through in the evening after a delicious meal.

Evening stroll in Mgarr

Have more time?

Apart from enjoying the other options listed in this Gozo itinerary, you can also head to the north of the island where the Xwejni Salt Pans are located. These salt pans form unique geometric patterns and are still being harvested by local workers.

There is also a craft brewery on the island called Lord Chambray which makes fantastic local beers – you can visit their taproom for tastings and you’ll also find their beer on the menus of many restaurants on Gozo.

All in all, there is plenty to keep you occupied on the island and more than enough reason to choose to stay in Gozo over Malta for a few nights.

Where to stay in Gozo

If you don’t have your own car to get around Gozo, staying in Victoria (Rabat) is ideal as the majority of bus routes pass through here and it has the greatest selection of restaurants and cafes on the island.

Casa Gemelli Boutique Guesthouse – This guesthouse is located in a traditional Maltese house with rooms beautifully furnished. They offer a couple of different double rooms including some with great views of the Citadel and include breakfast in the nightly rate.

The Duke Boutique Hotel  – A luxurious and modern hotel also located in Victoria (Rabat), they offer a range of rooms and suites suitable for couples or small families. Breakfast is also included daily.

Private Rental  – Gozo has a range of great private rentals such as  this historic farmhouse  and  this beautiful sea-view apartment.

Thanks for all the information. We spent 12th-19th Feb in Malta – an escape from the Polish winter – staying in Floriana. Your various mails were very informative and useful and we were able to make a tour of the north and south of the island as well as a sea trip to Gozo and Comino, but February is not the time for swimming in the blue lagoon, although one intrepid young man did spend 30 seconds in the sea. Valetta, Mosta, Mdina, Dingly cliffs – all brilliant. sites, with too much to see The Limestone Heritage is certainly worth adding to one’s itinerary. An excellent week.

Glad that you had a great trip, John! 🙂

Hi, I have Saturday, 20th Nov to spend in Gozo. How can I book a guided tour to see the citadel and the two temples of Ggantija temples. I would also like to see the temples of Hagar Qim, Mnajdra and Tarxien on my return. How can I organize this? I did not see many trips on Saturdays. thanks Priyanthi

Malta’s sister islands of Comino and Gozo are must-sees on your itinerary for Malta , given their outstanding natural beauty and Mediterranean charm! Comino is Malta’s third largest island, and is home to the famous Blue Lagoon which is one of the most unique places to visit in Europe . Gozo i s the second largest island in the Maltese archipelago, and is a charming place with a jagged coastline, green countryside and beautiful cities and villages ! And if you’re looking for a recommendation for the best day trip to Gozo and Comino from Malta , then here it is…

Cathedral of Assumption, Gozo - A day trip to Gozo and Comino from Malta with Sea Adventure Excursions

Note : Sea Adventure Excursions offer different options for boat trips to Gozo and Comino. You can visit both islands, or miss Gozo and stay at Comino’s Blue Lagoon for longer. I highly recommend doing the Gozo and Comino boat tour to get a taste of both of Malta’s sister islands! You can find information on how to book a trip at the end of this post.

Who are Sea Adventure Excursions?

When I visited Malta, I opted to book a one day trip to Comino and Gozo with Sea Adventure Excursions after reading good reviews for the company on TripAdvisor. Sea Adventure Excursions offer a range of different Malta sightseeing boat tours on their catamaran, Sea Adventure! What makes Sea Adventure that little bit special (and the reason I booked to go with them) is that they have 3 water-slides and an underwater viewing area . Along with this, they have all the standard amenities, like sundecks, sun loungers, toilets, and a bar.

Tip : Food and drinks are not included in the price of a boat trip. You can take your own supplies aboard, dine in Gozo or Xlendi, or purchase snacks on board the catamaran.

Where does the boat trip depart from?

Sea Adventure departs from the tourist town of Bugibba located on the northeast coast of Malta. It’s a stone’s throw away from Qawra and St Paul’s Bay, and a short drive from other well known hotspots like Sliema, St Julians and Valletta. Transfers to/from the departure port in Bugibba are not included in the price of the boat trip, so you’ll need to factor this into the cost if you’re not staying in Bugibba. You can book these through Sea Adventure Excursions for an additional fee, or make your own arrangements. Personally, I booked my transfers through Sea Adventure Excursions as I stayed in St Julians.

Mgarr Harbour Gozo Channel Line Ferry - A day trip to Gozo and Comino from Malta with Sea Adventure Excursions

Itinerary for day trip to Gozo and Comino from Malta

Stop 1: comino island and the blue lagoon.

Departing from the town of Bugibba in the morning and bound for Comino Island, you’ll cruise alongside Malta’s dramatic rocky coastline with its impressive cliffs and geological features. As you sail across the water, be sure to look out for the Statue of St Paul on St Paul’s Island which marks where St Paul became shipwrecked in around 60AD. With all the wonderful scenery around you, you’ll arrive at Comino Island in no time, which is the first stop on your Comino-Gozo day trip!

Comino Island is home to the world-renowned Blue Lagoon which is one of the natural wonders of Europe and is where you’ll dock . It is located off the north coast of Malta and is the third largest of the Maltese archipelago! Located in between Malta and Gozo, the Blue Lagoon is most famous for its azure waters. You’ll have around 1 hour here (around 4 hours if you opt to do the day trip to Comino from Malta not including Gozo) to explore the island and swim in the crystal clear waters!

Tip: Take your own towels with you if you plan on swimming in the Blue Lagoon. And even if you don’t, take them anyway because you might not be able to resist the allure of the aqua blue waters! Oh, and don’t forget your swimwear!

If you opt to take a wander of Comino Island, you’ll find that it is a mostly uninhabited 3.5 square kilometre island, with a population of herbs and flowers and one hotel. But seeing as you only have 1 hour, you’ll probably want to spend most of your time enjoying the Blue Lagoon and boat facilities, especially the slides and underwater windows due to the abundance of marine wildlife! (note: I went in November so it was very quiet on Comino and at the Blue Lagoon but I’ve heard it can be a pretty crowded place in peak months, so just be mindful of that)

Tip: There are rentable lockers aboard the ship to store your valuables in, so you don’t need to worry about them being left unattended whilst you unleash your inner child on the slides!

Blue Lagoon at Comino - A day trip to Gozo and Comino from Malta with Sea Adventure Excursions

Stop 2: Victoria (Gozo)

Once your hour’s up at the Blue Lagoon, it’s time to board the catamaran bound for Gozo which is just a short stretch away. Gozo is located northwest of Comino and is Malta’s second largest sister island. You will have 3 hours in Gozo and will arrive at Mgarr Harbour. From here you have the option to go off and explore solo, or to utilise the land transport offered by Sea Adventure Excursions for an additional small fee to help you to see the island.

Tip: I paid the extra charge for land transport on my day trip to Gozo. I’d recommend you do this for ease and to maximise your sightseeing time. You’ll jump aboard a minibus and be ferried up to Victoria before heading across to the coastal village of Xlendi.

The Citadel, Gozo

Victoria (known locally as Ir-Rabat) is the capital city of Gozo , and if you ever have a little more time would make for one of the best summer city break destinations in Europe . Taking centre stage of Victoria is the UNESCO World Heritage Citadel. The Citadel is an ancient fortification which has served as refuge from attacks over the years, and hidden within its walls is a whole other world of quaint lanes, museums, and cathedrals. One of the best things to do in Victoria is to wander the Citadel , and be sure not to miss the sweeping countryside views from the top of its high walls.

But Victoria is more than the iconic Citadel, and is home to a network of charming streets and sociable squares below its fort. St George’s Square is one of the most famous squares in Victoria to visit, and is lined with many bistros and bars. But if you want a quiet spot to enjoy a frothy coffee and a slice of cake, then head to Rizzles Cafe and Dolceria at St Francis Square before heading back to the bus stop!

St Francis Square in Victoria (Ir-Rabat), Gozo

Stop 3: Xlendi (Gozo)

If you’ve paid the additional charge for land transportation, after visiting Victoria you’ll be driven to a charming seaside village called Xlendi . Now admittedly, I did this trip in November so it was a little chilly and the waves in the cove were quite fierce, but this did not take away from how stunning it was. Xlendi is a quaint little place hemmed in by large cliffs either side, and is the ideal place for a spot of lunch with fantastic ocean views!

Stop 4: The Crystal Lagoon

Once your time has come to an end in Xlendi, you’ll be transported back to Mgarr Harbour to board Sea Adventure once again. As you head back towards Malta nearing the end of your Gozo and Comino tour, you’ll stop off at the Crystal Lagoon for around 1 hour , for swimming, snorkelling, and sliding (note: the boat only stops at the Crystal Lagoon if the weather permits and does not stop here from October-May)! After the Crystal Lagoon, you will sail back to Bugibba and if you’re lucky will be able to watch the sunset over Malta island!

Sunset over Malta on return journey following day trip to Gozo and Comino with Sea Adventure Excursions

Summary of day trip to Gozo and Comino from Malta

The only down-side I can possibly identify from this day trip to Gozo and the Blue Lagoon is that it was a little chilly, but this is completely beyond the control of Sea Adventure Excursions and is due to the fact that I went in November! So if you’re looking to explore the two islands that neighbour Malta and want to take a day tour for ease because you’re short on time, I would highly recommend Sea Adventure Excursions . I felt like I had enough time to get acquainted with each destination, the boat had fantastic amenities, it was well organised and was good value for money! I certainly plan to do it again on my next trip to Malta…

Tip: If you’re doing this Comino and Gozo day trip from Malta between October and May, it’s advisable to take a light jacket or jumper with you because the sea breeze can be crisp!

This detail is based on my recent trip to Malta . I spend a couple of weeks exploring the island and its archipelagos. I’ve based this guide on what I think are truly the best things to see in Gozo, Malta.

This picturesque island has a decent mix of ancient historical sites to stunning natural wonders as well as a gorgeous fortified city. I’ve curated a list of must-visit attractions that will ensure you have an unforgettable day trip to Gozo.

Although there is an abundance of things to do in Gozo, Malta, with only a day here, you’re only going to scratch the surface. This one day Gozo itinerary covers some of the highlights on the island without feeling too rushed.

Here’s how your itinerary for Gozo will pan out:

  • Morning: Start in Victoria, the island’s capital and explore the ancient Citadel before visiting the Inland Sea and either swim, snorkel or take a boat ride around the pretty bay.

How to Get To Gozo

When it comes to how to visit Gozo from Malta, you have a couple of options:

The regular ferry departs from Ċirkewwa terminal in northern Malta and arrives at Mġarr terminal in Gozo. This ferry allows both vehicles and passengers on board, providing a convenient option if you want to bring your car to Gozo.

The ferry ride usually takes around 25 minutes, but the duration may vary depending on weather conditions. The regular ferry service operates throughout the day, with frequent departures. However, it is recommended to check the schedule in advance, especially during peak seasons.

Gozo fast ferry from Valletta (passenger only)

The fast ferry departs from Valletta , the capital city of Malta, and arrives at Mġarr terminal in Gozo. This ferry is designed for passengers only and does not accommodate vehicles.

The fast ferry offers a quicker journey if you’re staying near the capital compared to having to catch a bus or drive to the regular ferry port. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes. It is advisable to check the schedule in advance and arrive at the terminal on time. It’s advisable to buy your ticket in advance.

Book Here: Regular Ferry From North Malta to Gozo

Book Here: Gozo Fast Ferry From Valletta

To get around, and explore the things to see on Gozo, you have several options:

  • Public Bus:  While available, public buses on Gozo may not be the most efficient choice as they can take longer to reach different destinations. I don’t recommend this as it takes too long. If you’re adamant to try this, then check on the Gozo public transport website to find connection times.
  • Gozo Hop-on Hop-off bus : This convenient option allows you to explore Gozo at your own pace. The Gozo hop-on hop-off bus follows a set route, stopping at major attractions, giving you the flexibility to hop off and explore before hopping back on.
  • Jeep tour of Gozo: Joining a guided full day Jeep tour of Gozo is a fantastic way to discover the island’s hidden gems and rugged landscapes. You’ll get to enjoy an off-road adventure and let the local guides show you the best spots.
  • Full-day ATV: For an exhilarating and adventurous experience, consider an ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) tour. Zip around the island, visiting key landmarks while enjoying the thrill of driving a quad bike on Gozo .
  • Drive your own car : If you prefer more independence and flexibility, you can bring your own car (or rental car) to Gozo using the ferry. This allows you to explore the island at your own pace and convenience. If you’re visiting Gozo from Malta by car, you’ll need to use the ferry terminal at Ċirkewwa.

If you’re wondering what to see in Gozo, here are my top suggestions for the best day trips to Gozo:

Gozo 1 Day Itinerary

This one-day itinerary is packed with the top things to do in Gozo. From ancient temples to picturesque villages, get ready to explore the best of Gozo’s rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and unforgettable experiences.

Let’s dive in!

Start your day on Gozo in the island’s capital; Victoria. Spend a couple of hours wandering the ancient walled city of the Citadel. After some time at the Citadel, head towards the west coast of the island to visit the Inland Sea where you can opt to swim, snorkel or take a boat ride around the pretty bay stopping for lunch at one of the restaurants here.

Citadel of Victoria

Standing proudly in the heart of Victoria, Gozo is the Citadel — a historic fortress that is a must see in Gozo and has watched over the island for centuries.

Within the Citadel, you’ll find a maze of narrow streets, charming squares, and impressive architectural structures. The highlight is undoubtedly the Cittadella, a fortified complex that includes the impressive Cathedral of Gozo, dedicated to Santa Marija, or more precisely the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which showcases stunning Baroque architecture and beautiful interior decorations.

As you wander through the Citadel , take in the panoramic views from the bastions, offering sweeping vistas of the island’s countryside and neighbouring villages. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Museum of Archaeology, which houses a remarkable collection of artefacts dating back to Gozo’s prehistoric times.

For a unique perspective, consider exploring the Citadel’s underground tunnels, which were once used as shelters during times of conflict. These tunnels provide a fascinating glimpse into Gozo’s wartime history.

Very close by are several fascinating small museums which include

  • The Cathedral Museum
  • The Folklore Museum
  • The Gozo Nature Museum
  • The Old Prison
  • The Old Gunpowder Magazine
  • The Grain Silos
  • The Battery

Tickets to the Citadel can be purchased on-site, and the opening times vary depending on the season. Generally, it is open to visitors from morning until late afternoon. It’s advisable to check the current opening hours before your visit.

Located near the village of Dwejra, the Inland Sea is a natural wonder that offers some of the best diving in Gozo. I didn’t get time to go diving on this trip – also, I was there in April which for me, is way too cold!

The Inland Sea It is a shallow lagoon connected to the open sea through a narrow cave tunnel. The calm and crystal-clear waters make it an ideal spot for swimming and snorkelling.

Surrounding the Inland Sea, you’ll find a small beach where you can relax and soak up the sun. You can walk down to the beach, and you’ll be able to see where the famous Azure Window once stood – it collapsed in 2017 after storms.

The picturesque setting, coupled with the stunning cliffs and azure waters, makes the Inland Sea a must-visit destination for nature lovers and beachgoers in Gozo. If you want to do a short coastal walk, then you can also head to neighbouring Dwejra Bay from here.

A boat in the water in the inland sea with a small cave tunnel

Leave the coast and cross the island. Next up is a visit to one of Gozo’s most famous landmarks, the UNESCO-listed Ggantija ruins. Explore the mighty Neolithic ruins before heading towards Ramla Bay. Here you can either choose to relax on the beach or climb the hill to discover Calypso’s Cave and Tal-Mixta Cave.

Ggantija Ruins

If you’re wondering what to do in Gozo, then this is it!

The UNESCO World Heritage site of the Ggantija Ruins , located in the village of Xagħra, is a testament to Gozo’s ancient past and is a Gozo must-see place. These remarkable ruins are among the oldest freestanding structures in the world, dating back over 5,000 years.

The Ggantija temples complex consists of two sections, Ggantija South and Ggantija North, which are believed to have been dedicated to a fertility cult. The massive stone walls and impressive megaliths used in their construction reflect the advanced architectural skills of their time.

Exploring the site, you can wander through the temple chambers and courtyards, gaining insight into the religious practices and daily life of the Neolithic people.

As you exit the ruins, make sure to admire the nearby Ta’Kola windmill . This charming traditional windmill stands tall against the picturesque Gozitan landscape, adding to the cultural and historical charm of the area.

This windmill was built in 1710 by Grand Master Perellos’ Foundation and is the oldest standing one in Gozo to this day.  It houses a small museum.

Ramla Bay, located on the northern coast of Gozo, is renowned for its stunning beauty and unique features. With its golden-red sandy beach and crystal-clear turquoise waters, it stands out as one of the most picturesque bays in Gozo.

Visiting Ramla Bay is one of the top things to do in Gozo as it offers a perfect spot for relaxation and sunbathing. With its wide stretch of sand, you can spread out and enjoy the sun, build sandcastles, or take leisurely walks along the shore.

Crystal clear blue water with a boat surrounded by a mountain on the side at Ramla Bay

The calm and shallow waters make this one of the best beaches in Gozo island. It’s ideal for swimming and snorkelling, allowing you to discover the vibrant marine life beneath the surface.

Adjacent to Ramla Bay, you’ll find two intriguing caves that add to the allure of the area. The first is known as Calypso’s Cave, an ancient cave steeped in mythology and believed to be the legendary home of the nymph Calypso in Homer’s Odyssey. While the inside of the cave is not accessible, the viewing platforms here offer an interesting story and stunning views of its surroundings.

The second cave, Tal Mixta Cave is the lesser-known natural formation, tucked away on the eastern end of Ramla Bay. It features an opening that allows the sea breeze to pass through, creating a unique photogenic window out to the bay below.

A view of the blue ocean, land and trees from Tal-Mixta cave

In the late afternoon, head to the northeast coast of Gozo and to the coastal town of Xwejni. Here you’ll find the ancient Salt Pans which are still in use today. Take a walk around the Salt Pans of Xwejni at sunset, where they glow orange. After working up an appetite, head back to Victoria for a traditional Maltese dinner.

The Salt Pans of Gozo is a testament to the island’s traditional salt-making industry and one of the fascinating places of interest in Gozo.

Located near the village of Marsalforn , these shallow rock-cut pools have been used for centuries to harvest salt from the sea. The unique geometric patterns created by the pans, filled with seawater that evaporates to leave behind pure salt crystals, make for a captivating sight – it’s incredibly photogenic during sunset, as the salt glows bright yellow!

Exploring the Xwejni Salt Pans offers a glimpse into Gozo’s cultural heritage and gives you the oppotunity to learn about the traditional salt production methods that have been passed down through generations.

It’s a must-visit destination for if you’re planning where to go in Gozo to immerse yourslef in Gozo’s history and natural beauty.

Where is Gozo and how do I get there?

Gozo is located west of Malta and Comino , and is the second-largest island in the Maltese archipelago.

Gozo and Malta are separated by a small channel , so it is very easy to travel from one island to the other. In fact, Gozo is an ideal destination for a day trip from Malta : just take the ferry and you'll arrive at your destination in less than 1 hour.

Ferry connections from Malta to Gozo operate year-round and are available from both the port of Valletta , the capital of Malta, and the port of Ċirkewwa , in the north of the island.

The companies serving these routes are Virtu Gozo (Gozo Highspeed) and Gozo Channel . Depending on the port of departure and the company, you will arrive in Gozo in 25 to 45 minutes .

Why should I visit Gozo?

With its unspoiled nature, wild coastline and historical sites, Gozo has become one of the most beloved islands in the Mediterranean . According to Homer's Odyssey , the nymph Calypso managed to hold the Greek hero Odysseus captive for 7 years on this beautiful island. Will you also fall under the same spell?

A day in Gozo will allow you to experience the island’s magnificent heritage , dive into dreamy bays , visit villages frozen in time , and admire the peaceful, traditional way of life of the locals.

In addition, Malta - Gozo ferry tickets are pretty cheap, with fares ranging from €4 to €7.50 . There are also various discounts for students and seniors, as well as other passenger categories.

You can decide whether to explore Gozo on foot , with your own vehicle (only possible if you embark it from Ċirkewwa port) or by cab .

If we've convinced you, it's time to learn more about what to do and see in Gozo in a day :

What to do in Gozo in 1 day

Once you decide whether to depart from the port of Valletta or Ċirkewwa, it’s time to book your ferry tickets to Gozo. Choose the early morning route so you can arrive early and take advantage of the whole day on the island.

Even before you arrive, you will be overwhelmed with awe at the beauty of Gozo as you approach the port of Mgarr: Fort Chambray and the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes dominate the scene.

First, head to Victoria , the capital of Gozo. By taking bus line 301 from the port, you will get there in about 10 minutes. Start by exploring Victoria's historic center, perhaps after a delicious breakfast at Café Jubilee in the famous Independence Square.

Wander through the city's alleys, stop to admire St. George's Basilica , and then continue to the Citadella . Walk (or take the elevator) up to the square, with the wonderful Cathedral of the Assumption . Up on the ramparts, you'll enjoy a 360-degree view of Gozo's hills, valleys and villages.

Feeling hungry? Step into a local bakery and try the Gozitan ftira . This delicious traditional flatbread is perfect for a late-morning snack!

After a full immersion in history, it's time for a rejuvenating dip and to relax on the beach. From Victoria you can continue north and reach Ramla Bay , Gozo's red beach. Spend a couple of hours here and take the opportunity to also visit Tal-Mixta (the famous Calypso's Cave), located on the western side of Ramla Bay.

Next, head further north to the seaside resort of Marsalforn , with its scenic seaside restaurants. You can also travel outside the town and visit the Xwejni Salt Pans , carved into the rock.

About 7 km from Marsalforn there is another wonder waiting for you: the Ta pinu sanctuary . From here you can continue toward the coast and arrive at one of the island's most magical attractions - Dwejra Bay . If you have already heard of Gozo's Azure Window , you should know that it was once located right here, but a storm in 2017 brought down this beautiful natural arch.

Its collapse has now created a hub for marine life , making it one of the most spectacular diving sites in Gozo. So, what are you waiting for? Grab your mask!

It is already late afternoon and you certainly cannot leave Gozo without admiring its beautiful sunset from the Ta' Ċenċ Cliffs viewpoint. Sit on the cliff overlooking the sea and enjoy the view!

Now you can slowly start heading back toward the port of Mgarr , which is 15 minutes from here. Ferries to Malta from Gozo operate until late in the evening !

Day Trip to Gozo: How to Get from Malta to Gozo

Malta is a small country made up of 3 main islands in the Mediterranean. Known for being one of the sunniest destinations in Europe, it’s a popular getaway for a few days or even a couple of weeks. Most people choose to stay on the main island (Malta) for their stay but I have to admit, I fell in love with Gozo; the slightly smaller island to the north. Known for its rugged coastline and beaches, it’s a beautiful place to escape to, even if just for a day. So, in this blog post, I’m sharing why you should consider a day trip to Gozo with instructions on how to get from Malta to Gozo and my top tips on what to see and do and how to make the most of your time.

Ready? Let’s go(zo)!

How to Get from Malta to Gozo

malta day trip to gozo

If you plan on doing a day trip to Gozo on your own, then you have two options: rent a car or use public transportation. Both follow the same route however driving is, unsurprisingly, a much faster option that gives you more freedom than relying on the bus. That being said, the bus is cheap and easy so that’s what I’m going to focus on (drivers, you’ll follow the same route).

Getting to the Gozo Ferry

The first step is to get to Cirkewwa which is where you catch the ferry from Malta to Gozo. There is a direct bus from Sliema that will get you there in about an hour. It’s bus number 222 and starts at the Sliema Ferries 2 station.

Please note there are LOTS of stops along the way (55 to be exact) which means this bus can fill up very quickly and, depending on how busy it is, drive past stops along the way. For this reason, I recommend is you are staying in Sliema or even St. Julains, to head to the first stop (Ferries 2) to start your journey to make sure you do actually get on board. Please note depending on how full the bus is, you may or may not get a seat.

The bus from Malta to Gozo runs daily from early morning until night. You can find route times and schedule here.   I also recommend downloading the Moovit app which is great for figuring out local transportation and worked really well in Malta.

PS: You can find my Malta Guide here.

The Gozo Ferry

malta day trip to gozo

Once you arrive in Cirkewwa you’ll get off at the last stop which is the ferry station. Inside you can buy your tickets (cash or credit card) from one of the vendors. As of August 2023, the cost for a single adult passenger is 7.50 euro. There are toilets and snack machines inside if you need it. If you are planning on driving in Gozo, you can bring your car over by the ferry. If not, you can leave it in the parking lot and continue the rest of the way on public transit.

The ferry from Malta to Gozo takes about 30 minutes each way and passes by Comino island. If it’s a nice day, head to the top deck for some pretty views.

Arriving in Gozo

malta day trip to gozo

Once you have arrived in Gozo you can disembark the ferry and exit the terminal. If you are driving, you can take your car and head off. If you are relying on transit to get around you have two options.

The first option is to join one of the hop-on-hop-off tours for Gozo. It’s an easy and efficient way to see the highlights of Gozo in 1 day. That being said, it’s the most expensive option and can be very busy. However, it does take away a lot of the planning and travel time. If you’d like to book hop-on-hop-off bus tickets to Gozo, you can purchase them in advance here.

The second option is to use the local Gozo buses. These are cheap but can be very time-consuming. Especially if you get on the slow bus like I did. You’ll also need to keep in mind that for each new place you want to go, you’ll have to backtrack to the capital (Victoria) to change buses every time.

How to Spend 1 Day in Gozo

Gozo is a small island but you still can’t expect to see and do it all in one day, especially if you are using public transit to get around. Personally, I think you should take an hour or two to explore the capital, Victoria, then make sure to see at least one or two spots along the coast so you can experience Gozo’s beautiful scenery. If more time allows, add in a couple of other things but keep in mind that you may not get to see everything on this list in one day if you are relying on public transit, so pick and choose what sounds of the most interest to you and start from there.

Here’s what to do in Gozo in 1 Day:

Victoria (Rabat)

malta day trip to gozo

Victoria (also known as Rabat) is the capital of Gozo and also where you will find the main bus station to connect you to other parts of the island. It’s pretty small so you can easily just spend a couple of hours here depending on what you want to see or do.

The Cittadella is the main attraction. It is free to go to and offers a look into the history of the island. There are a couple of museums and a church (some have fees to enter) that you can visit. Also, go up the bastion walls for some impressive views over Victoria and the island itself.

After (or before) the Cittadella, I recommend just taking some talk to walk about the streets. There are a few churches you can visit, lots of little boutique shops with local foods, jewellery, and other artisan wares.

Also, if you want to grab some food or drinks to take with you, it’s probably best to do it in Victoria before you head out to the other places I suggest.

Dwejra Bay: Azure Window (remains), Fungus Rock, Inland Sea

malta day trip to gozo

To see some of Gozo’s beautiful scenery head to Dwejra Bay. This is where the famous Azure Window used to be and while it (sadly) collapsed a few years ago, the area is still beautiful.

Make sure to wear decent shoes (flipflops aren’t ideal) as you will definitely want to walk along the coast here. Also within the Dwejra Bay area, you can find Fungus Rock, which makes for great photos, and the Inland Sea.

malta day trip to gozo

Between Victoria and Dwejra Bay is Ta’Pinu Basilica. It’s absolutely gorgeous and, since it’s set a little bit away from the closest town, offers pretty views. The Basilica as you see it today was built in the early 1900s and follows the neo-romantic style. It’s one of the best things to see in Gozo and one of the most important sites on the island.

If you are taking the local bus, you pass it and can get off here on the way to (or from) Dwejra Bay.

Ramla Beach

malta day trip to gozo

If you are looking to experience one of Gozo’s best beaches, then head to Ramla Beach. Located on the north-east of the island, Ramla Beach can be reached by bus (and obviously car). There are a couple of spots to get food but the beach area in unspoiled by any hotels or larger buildings. You can swim and snorkel here, though the ocean floor is rocky so be careful.

malta day trip to gozo

If you are a history lover, then you may want to make a stop at Ggantija. It’s a megalithic temple complex that is older than the Egyptian pyramids and Stonehenge. According to local legends, Ggantija was constructed by giants. You can get to Ggantija easiest by car, however, local buses do stop nearby as well.

Malta Tours to Gozo

Not convinced you want to tackle a Gozo day trip on your own? Don’t worry, there are a few options for Malta tours to Gozo as well that do all of the work for you. If the weather is nice, you can even go by boat!

Final Thoughts on a Day Trip to Gozo

malta day trip to gozo

Going to Gozo just for 1 day makes for a long and busy day with a lot of travel time, however, I absolutely think it’s worth it. My day trip to Gozo is one of my favourite memories of my time in Malta and, to be honest, I wish I had spent longer there. Especially since it’s an amazing scuba diving destination; I’ll definitely have to go back one day for that!

My top tip would be to get up early and go (take one of the earliest buses) so you can make sure to get a full day. Especially if you are going during the winter season when daylight hours are shorter like I did!

While driving to this island is obviously out of the question, so is flying, as remote Gozo lacks the infrastructure (and demand) to support an airport.

It’s important to be aware of the different ferry options before you travel to make sure you’re in the right place at the right time. I also highly recommend booking your ferry tickets in advance, particularly during peak summer season.

First things first: What’s the best ferry to take to Gozo?

The answer to this will all depend on where you’re based in Malta – and whether or not you’re traveling with a car or as a foot passenger.

If you’re planning to base yourself in or around Malta’s capital – and I highly recommend checking out these wonderful Valletta hotels with pools if you do – you can travel on the Gozo Fast Ferry via the Valletta terminal. You’ll find this ferry terminal located at Xatt Lascaris, Il-Belt Valetta in Malta.

You can check out the Gozo Fast Ferry schedule to and from Valletta here and purchase ferry tickets here .

However, it’s important to keep in mind that the Gozo Fast Ferry from Valletta is exclusively reserved for foot passengers only , so you won’t be able to bring a vehicle on board.

Otherwise, if you’re planning to travel with a vehicle, you’ll want to hop on the alternative ferry option in the port of Cirkewwa. This ride is shorter, getting to you Gozo between just 25 and 30 minutes. You can check out the Gozo Channel ferry schedule here and the current car fares here .

Regardless of which option you choose, either ferry will take you to Mgarr Harbor in Gozo.

Getting from Malta to Gozo by Organized Tour

If you’d prefer to leave the coordination to someone else and simply enjoy the journey, consider joining an organized tour/day trip to Gozo. These tours leave from Malta and sometimes include a visit to the smaller neighboring island of Comino in addition to Gozo.

Getting Around Gozo by Rental Car

If you’re not part of an organized tour, the next thing you’ll want to consider for your day trip to Gozo will be how to get around.

Let’s start by addressing the elephant in the room: Do you need a car in Gozo?

Admittedly, I spent a lot of time researching this before our trip. While technically you do not need a car, I highly recommend renting one.

I was initially under the impression – considering Gozo’s small size – that much of the island could be explored on foot. After a bit of research, I discovered that my assumption was far from reality!

Although Gozo is small and has much to offer, its major points of interest are spaced pretty far apart. In other words, it would take an unreasonable amount of time (say two hours or so) to get between places on foot – not to mention the difficulty of navigating some challenging terrain!

The bottom line: You’ll need to rely on some form of transportation while you’re here.

Personally, I think a car is the best option, as you’ll have full freedom to come and go as you please. The only (potential) downside of having a car may be having to navigate some rugged terrain (depending on where you visit).

It’s also important to know that driving is on the left-hand side of the road like the rest of Malta.

If you do decide to rent a car while in Gozo, there are several places near Mgarr Harbor where you can pick up your rental. We went with Budget rental cars via Expedia . You can expect to pay around $45 for a single-day rental, including taxes and fees.

Getting Around Gozo by Public Bus

If driving isn’t your speed and you’d prefer public transportation, an alternative option is traveling by bus. There’s a total of 15 bus routes running throughout the island and buses run each hour. (There’s also a bus route between Mgarr ferry terminal and Rabat that operates every 30 minutes.)

You can plan your journey and check out bus schedules here .

Just keep in mind that while bus travel is the cheapest of all options, it’s also the most time-consuming. This is definitely something to consider for your day trip to Gozo, as you’ll obviously be somewhat limited on time.

That said, if you’re only planning to hit a few of the major sites while on the island, it may actually be the best option for you overall.

Getting Around Gozo with the Hop-On/Hop-Off Bus

If you like the idea of traveling by bus but you’d prefer to focus on the major sites without a lot of additional stopovers in between, you may prefer to jump aboard the hop-on/hop-off bus. This option follows a set route around the island which takes around three hours in total.

If you’re only interested in a handful of the bus stops, you may wish to hop off before the full route is complete and grab a taxi for any additional stops.

Getting Around Gozo by Taxi

Unsurprisingly, a taxi is the costliest of all the transportation options, but it’s also convenient and efficient. It’s also a great alternative if you don’t want to wait around for a bus and you prefer traveling without a crowd.

Here are some helpful pointers to best prepare you for your day trip to Gozo:

  • Book an early morning departure and a late return trip – If you’re doing a day trip to Gozo, you’ll want to maximize your time as much as possible. Ferries to the island run on a specific timetable, so I suggest booking an early morning departure and an evening time slot for the return trip for the fullest possible experience. Again, I highly recommend booking in advance so that you’ll have access to the full range of time options.
  • Bring more than just a bathing suit – While Gozo is known for its remote beaches, there’s much more to the island than that! In addition to swimwear, you’ll also want to bring appropriate attire that covers your knees and shoulders. This is particularly key when visiting the island’s many churches.
  • Book your car rental in advance – If you’re planning to rent a car, reserve your rental before you arrive. Since the rental facilities operate on different schedules and there are a limited amount of vehicles available, you want to make sure there’s a car ready and waiting for you when you arrive.

When I’m asked the question of how many days to spend in Gozo my honest answer is, as many as you can.  It’s a truly beautiful island and when you’re on a trip to Malta and Gozo you want to make the most of both islands.

Of course, you can see the highlights of Gozo in one day and this guide will show you how.  But if you prefer to slow down and really get to know a place, then I recommend at least three to five days on Gozo.

I’ve spent a week on Gozo and not been bored, as there is always another corner of the island to uncover. Check out my seven day Malta itinerary for more Maltese must-visit locations.

If you’re wondering what is there to do in Gozo and is Gozo worth visiting , then let me help you.  Gozo is absolutely worth visiting, in fact, I think it’s so good that I’d go so far as to say that I prefer it to its sister island of Malta (although Malta is also pretty blooming lovely).

There is a whole heap of things to see on a Gozo trip.  I love the laid-back pace and expanse of open countryside mixed with historic villages.  Walking across the island and enjoying the best of Gozo’s beaches really is a balm for the soul.

Visit xlendi bay on a Gozo day trip from Valletta

There are so many places to see in Gozo that you won’t be able to get around them all with just one day in Gozo.  However, as Gozo island is so petite, you will be able to get round to lots of the must-see Gozo attractions with a single day itinerary.

This Gozo travel guide will offer tips for what to do on Gozo that include the top historical sights, best of Gozo’s beaches and a flavour of the stunning Gozo landscape’s best and most beautiful views .  I’ve also included suggestions for some fun activities on Gozo if you’re feeling adventurous .

This one day in Gozo itinerary includes a sample of the best things to do in Gozo.  You’ll get to experience a flavour of the best of Gozo’s beaches, landscapes and historical sites.  Plus, of course, some delicious Gozitan food.

It’s a packed itinerary and if you’re travelling without a car you might want to remove one or two stops, so that you can spend more time relaxing.  In which case, I recommend you skip Dwejra Bay Inland Sea and Ta’ Pinu.

Taxis on Gozo are relatively cheap so use them to get between places, for example from Wied Il-Ghasri to Wied il-Mielah.

If you love the sound of taking a Gozo day trip from Valletta and want the convenience of a planned out itinerary, you can book a wonderful Gozo day tour.

These tours will take you around the highlights of Gozo and organise your transport on the island, leaving you to just relax and enjoy the day.  Here are three of the most popular and highly rated tours:

Alternatively, if you value the flexibility to make your own timetable and still want convenient transport that will get you to the key sights, book the the Gozo Hop-on Hop-off bus .  You can choose where you want to spend your time during the day.

victoria gozo

Start your day trip to Gozo from Valletta with an early walk around the ancient, fortified capital of Gozo, known as the Citadel (or Cittadella).  If you’re on Gozo in summer, the morning is a great time to explore this part of the island, as the temperature is not at its highest.

There are loads of things to see and do at the Citadel but if you want to enjoy other Gozo places of interest during the day, select just a few.  My top tips are:

  • The Grain Silos
  • The Old Prison
  • The Battery

xaghra windmill interior

Stepping into the Ġgantija temples is like walking through a portal to an ancient world.  Located in the heart of Xaghra village, these megalithic stones were built more than 5,000 years ago, they predate Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids.

The temples’ design includes colossal limestone slabs forming walls and doorways that lead into a central corridor.

Ġgantija’s UNESCO World Heritage status underscores its global importance and the museum illuminates more of the Gozo’s history with ancient artefacts.

The admission fee is a bit on the pricey side, with prices from €10, so if you’re travelling on a budget this is one to skip.

The ticket to the temples includes entrance to the Ta’ Kola Windmill, just around the corner.  Don’t miss a quick look around to discover the integral role that grain and bread played in Maltese history.  I found it a great way to get a glimpse of Gozo’s heritage and the everyday lives of the population.

ramla beach

After all that history, it’s time to enjoy another type of Gozo’s attractions, a visit to the beach.

The ochre-coloured sands of Ramla Bay are synonymous with Gozo so you must include a trip here if you only have one day on Gozo.  Not least for the chance to sample one of the huge varieties of of ice creams and ice lollies on offer from the vans parked up at Ramla.  On my visits here, I’ve found them to be just what I need on one of Gozo’s many sunny days.

Along with the red sand, Ramla is also home to Ta’ Mixta Cave and Calypso’s Cave.  Ta’ Mixta Cave has become known as one of Gozo’s best places for Instagram shots , so head up to the east of the bay to get your own photo.

At the opposite end of the bay is the mythical Calypso’s Cave, reputedly mentioned in Hommer’s the Odyssey.  You can’t go into the cave itself but there is a good lookout point here.

If you’re travelling by car, take a short drive eastwards to check out the beautiful San Blas beach as well.  The descent is very steep, so be prepared for your legs to hurt on the way back up (or get a lift from the local jeep service for a few euros).  Don’t attempt to drive your own vehicle right down to the beach.

sea splashing over salt pans

The salt pans at Xwejni Bay are an aesthetic dream. The formation of the pans creates striking patterns and imagery, making them a wonderful backdrop for photos of your day on Gozo.

The landscape along this part of Gozo’s coast is full of lunar-like terrain and interesting shapes.  Check out the derelict Il Qolla Bajada battery whilst you’re here.  This area is one of the most unique places to visit in Gozo and is great for your Instagram .

wied il-ghasri canyon

After you’ve finished walking along the coast on Gozo, head inland to take a dip in the secluded inlet of Wied Il-Ghasri .

There’s a set of stairs leading down to the narrow strip of water that heads out to sea.

This swimming spot is ideal if you have an adventurous spirit.  There’s not really a beach to speak of, so find a place on the cliffs to make your base and enjoy the dramatic scenery surrounding you.

steps to wied il mielah

For more incredible scenery on Gozo, don’t miss a visit to Wied il-Mielah.

After Gozo’s famous Blue Window crashed into the sea, Wied il-Mielah offers an equally stunning replacement.

The natural arch, with its flat top, is one of my favourite places to visit in Gozo.  The sea swirls and crashes around below, as the ancient rocks jut out over it.

Ta’ Pinu Basilica

Where to go malta - ta pinu

If you’re travelling by car, take a short detour to the 20th century basilica of Ta’ Pinu.   Whilst the building is relatively young, the sanctuary is situated on the spot of a much older church and its location amongst the rolling landscape of Gozo makes it an appealing spot to visit.

dwejra bay

The Dwejra Bay Inland Sea dive site should be next on your list of where to go in Gozo island, if you have transport.

If you’re exploring Gozo without a car in and only have one day then this spot is one to miss.

The most famous view at this site, the Blue Window rock formation, sadly no longer exists.  However, there’s the Blue Hole swimming spot and you can go on a fun short boat trip from the Inland Sea, an ancient circular lagoon, out to the towering cliffs of the Gozo coast.

xlendi grotto

A stop at Xlendi bay on southern Gozo offers the opportunity to take a dip in the sparkling water of Gozo, or, if you’re feeling adventurous, hire a boat or a jet ski here.

I loved whizzing about on a jet ski out in the open sea off the Xlendi coast and it was a reasonable price, starting from €50 for 20 minutes for 2 people .

Xlendi is a good place to stop and refuel as there are lots of restaurants, shops and kiosks to choose from.

The best spot at Xlendi is a tranquil area often overlooked by visitors. Walk along the pathway skirting the edge of Xlendi bay, towards the Xlendi Tower.  You’ll find a serene and scenic swimming spot, known as the Xlendi Grotto.  It’s like having your own private outdoor pool, complete with steps to help you get in to the water from the rocks.

Gozo hikes mgarr ix xini2

Explore Mgarr ix-Xini

For a more off-the-beaten-track beach, instead of Xlendi, check out the beautiful inlet of Mgarr ix-Xini.  Set amongst the gorgeous rocky landscape of Gozo Mgarr ix-Xini is one of the best Gozo beaches to head to if you want to discover a hidden gem on your day in Gozo.  This place is popular with locals and the water is a glorious shade of deep turquoise.

A trip to Mgarr ix-Xini beach is one of the best places to visit in Gozo.  There’s a roped off swimming area and you can hire kayaks and Stand Up Paddle Boards (SUP).

The beach area is very small but there are cliffs to stretch out on and it’s the water and local atmosphere you come here for.

Things to do at Mgarr ix-Xini

mgarr ix-Xini gozo walk

Getting out on the water is one of the top things to do in Gozo and Mgarr ix-Xini provides a great place to do it.  I tried SUP for the first time here.

There is no lesson, you pay, grab your board and life jacket and then it’s over to you.  In my case, that meant I ended up accidentally drifting into the swimming area, try as I might to stop.

A sharp toot of the lifeguard’s whistle did nothing to help me as I manoeuvred myself back out as quick as I could.  Thankfully, after that, I improved enough to stand up on the board and explore around the bay.

Despite my run in with the lifeguard’s whistle, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, not least because Mr Flip Flops Included had me in hysterics with his many, many, failed attempts to stay on the board.

For an extra adventure, hire a kayak, and go all the way around the headland to the west.  It’s a bit of a trip but when I did it I was delighted to find a very cool set of caves at the end and a much quieter area to swim in.

For refreshments, head up the steps in the rocks to the Ta’ Ċenċ hotel bar perched up on the cliff.  I’ve also walked here, following the rustic coastal path from Mgarr ix-Xini.  It’s a beautifully calming spot to take a drink.

Eat at Mgarr ix-Xini

If you like fresh seafood then you could swap eating at Xewkija for eating at Mgarr ix-Xini.  The restaurant on the beach may look like nothing much but it’s super popular with local families, so you’ll be in for a treat (and be prepared to wait).  There’s also a food van parked just up above the beach, if seafood is not your thing.

gozo sanap dusk

As evening draws near, head up to the Sanap Cliffs , just along the coast from Xlendi.  It’s one of the best places on Gozo to watch the sunset from, as the surrounding cliffs change colour under the golden glow of the descending sun.

This is where limestone cliffs drop dramatically into the glimmering water below.  There’s a pathway along part of the cliffs, although it’s not for those who are scared of heights.

Once you’re done gazing at the stunning views from the Sanap Cliffs, walk to nearby Xewkija village.  The walk takes 40 minutes, or you can take a Bolt or an Uber for around €8.

Xewkija village is home to one of the most impressive things to see on Gozo, St John’s Rotunda. This church with its intricate exterior seems to tower over the village square.  No wonder, as it’s the largest church on Gozo and has the third largest unsupported dome in the world .

You can even take a lift up to see the views out across Gozo from the dome.  In the evening you get an extra special experience as the outside is lit up like a Christmas tree in all its glory.

Either finish your day on Gozo by heading back to Victoria for dinner or eat in Xewkija.  There are a few options dotted around the square.  I ate traditional Maltese food at the deceptively named Shangri-la Chinese Cuisine by Giovanni’s.  The food was delicious and outweighed my expectations for such an unassuming venue.

man walking at the sanap cliffs

There are plenty of hiking opportunities on Gozo, making it a great island for visiting without a car.

Opt for bike rental on Gozo for a quicker alternative to walking. Consider an e-bike so you can easily navigate the island’s substantial inclines.

As well as walking and biking, there are lots of bus routes to get you to the key sights on Gozo.  Check the Malta public transport website for latest timetables and read my article on getting around Malta for more information.

If you don’t want to drive but want to get from A to B quickly, there are plenty of taxis and Ubers and Bolts on Gozo .

Scooter hire

As a small island, Gozo also makes for a fun destination to hire a scooter and explore the sights at your own pace.

If you prefer to drive around Gozo , you can compare prices and check availability of car hire on Gozo at Discover Cars .  They also have free cancellation up to 24 hours before your car rental starts.

For a fun way to see Gozo in one day, book a Gozo quad bike adventure .  You’ll travel across the stunning landscapes of Gozo, including the Sanap Cliffs, Xlendi, Wied il-Mielaħ and the Xwejni salt pans.   There’s even a traditional Gozitan lunch included.

take the ferry to spend one day in gozo

To get to Gozo from Valletta, take the fast ferry .  I thoroughly enjoyed travelling all along the Maltese coastline on this efficient service.  You can take luggage onboard and food and drink is available to purchase.

The price for a return ticket from Valletta to Gozo starts from £13 for adults (correct as at 2024).   Tickets for the Valletta to Gozo ferry are cheapest if you buy in advance .

For more information, check out my article on getting the ferry to Gozo .

If you are won over by Gozo’s charms and want to spend more than a day on the island, here are three top choices of where to stay.

Casa Gemili, Victoria

An adults only boutique guesthouse.  Originally built in 1890, Casa Gemili offers great views of the Gozo Citadel.

Kempinski Hotel, San Law renz

If you love a luxury stay, check out the 5-star haven that is the Kempinski Hotel, San Lawrenz .   It has beautiful gardens, air-conditioned rooms with private balconies and wonderful swimming pools, perfect for a dip at the end of the day.

The Cornuco pia Hotel, Xaghra

An evening drink as the sunsets at the Cornucopia Hotel is one of the best ways to spend a peaceful night on Gozo. The views across the island are stunning. Make sure you ask for one of the updated rooms.  The hotel has two pools and a Jacuzzi.  I found the staff very friendly and helpful.

For more details on where to stay in Gozo and Malta check out my articles on adults only hotels in Malta and the best boutique hotels in Malta .

Is Gozo in Malta?

Yes, the island of Gozo is in Malta.  Gozo forms part of the country of Malta but it is a separate island to the island of Malta.

When is the best time to visit Gozo?

Gozo and Malta are great destinations at any time of the year, owing to their sunny and mostly mild climate.  However, the spring and late summer are the best times to visit, as the weather and sea are warm but you will avoid the hottest temperatures of peak summer.

Should I do an organised trip to Gozo from Malta?

Taking an organised trip to Gozo from Malta is a great option if you are short on time and want to see the island’s top sights.  Organised tours will also typically organise your transport to Gozo from Malta, making it a super convenient way to travel.  A local tour guide will also be able to provide insights into Gozo’s history and culture.

Should I spend more than a day in Gozo?

You can see lots of the best that Gozo has to offer in a day in Gozo.  However, on my visits I’ve really enjoyed taking several days to make the most of slow travel and the slower pace of life that Gozo offers.  Its small size makes Gozo an ideal destination if you travel without a car and want to get out and discover Gozo’s wonderful hiking routes .

How easy is it getting to Gozo?

Getting to Gozo is very easy.  There are regular ferries from both Valletta, Malta’s capital, and Ċirkewwa, in the north of Malta.

When is the last ferry from Gozo to Malta?

The ferry from Gozo to Malta runs all night on the route from Mgarr Harbour on Gozo to Ċirkewwa in the north of Malta.  The fast ferry from Gozo to Valletta does stop at night and starts again in the morning.  The last ferry on this route typically leaves at 10.15pm or 11.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays.  Check the website for the latest timetable.

I'm Katie and although I'm based in the UK I spend my spare time travelling the world. I've visited countless countries, from South America to Australia and many places in between. A meticulous travel researcher and organiser I can often be found working out the best way to get from A to B via public transport.

Head to Dwejra Bay to visit the spot where the famous Azure Window used to stand proudly out at sea. This spot is still very popular to visit despite the Azure window collapsing during a storm in 2017. This amazing piece of Limestone was created by the collapse of a sea cave. It continues to be a popular spot, everyone wanting to get some photos of where the famous arch used to stand.

What Should You Pack for Malta?

What you need to pack for Malta will rely highly on when you make your trip there. During the Spring and Autumn months, temperatures and weather patterns vary wildly between beautiful sunny skies and rainy days. During the Summer, you are pretty much guaranteed nice weather with temperatures ranging from 20-35 oC. The hottest months are July and August, so these will be the most popular for a Summer holiday.

During the winter months in Malta, the rain will become more frequent and the temperatures will drop to between 10-20 oc. If you need more inspiration on what to pack for your trip, check out our full packing guides for all-weather conditions over here .

When it comes to toiletries, we recommend that you don’t forget to pack sunscreen. The sun in Malta is very strong, especially during the summer months. Apply a lot of suncream regularly to prevent a nasty burn from ruining your trip. We use this specific sunscreen to protect us as it is not as oily and irritating as other sunscreens.

Given the beautiful sights and scenery that you will see in Malta, we highly recommend packing a good camera for your trip. If you want to read more about the cameras we use and why we love them, check out the link below.

Where to Stay in Malta

Due to how small the island of Malta is, your choice of accommodation is huge. It is up to you where you wish to stay on the island and you can browse all of the top accommodations in Malta on this website . In our opinions, the best location to stay in Malta is in the small town of Sliema, just to the north of Valletta.

Sliema is central on the island, not far from the capital city of Valletta and the nightlife centre of St Julians, and it is also very affordable due to it being outside of these two areas. Here are the top accommodation options that we recommend for all ranges of budget.

Luxury – Even the most luxurious accommodation in Sliema is very reasonably priced, making it the perfect place to stay in Malta. The hotel AX The Palace sits just off the high street of Sliema and features luxuries such as a rooftop infity pool that overlooks the sea, as well as home comforts like AC and free wifi.

Read more about AX The Palace and b ook you stay right here.

Mid-Range -At the mid-range pricing for Sliema, the Palazzo Violetta Boutique Hotel is the perfect mixture of Malta’s beautiful old-style architecture and the modern side of the island. Offering studio apartments that are perfect for two travellers, including a kitchenette and terrace swimming pool, this hotel is the optimum combination of budget abd luxury.

Budget – If you are not bothered with a luxurious place to stay and simply want a comfortable and safe place to rest at the end of the day, then the Roma Hotel is the perfect place for you. This seaside hotel sits overlooking Sliema’s seafront promenade and is just a couple of minutes walk away from its rocky beaches. All rooms feature a TV, fridge and tea and coffee making facilities.

Gozo By Car. The Perfect One Day In Gozo Itinerary

Are you planning on visiting Gozo Island but have no idea where to start? This one day in Gozo itinerary should help you organize your visit.

Malta is actually an archipelago of five islands: Malta, Gozo, Comino, Comminotto, and Filfla, but only three are inhabited: Malta, Gozo, and Comino. Less than 40,000 people live on Gozo Island and call themselves Gozitans.

While many choose to visit Gozo only for a few hours on a guided day tour, I highly recommend renting a car and exploring this beautiful Island on your own. Thus, you will have the chance to see almost everything Gozo has to offer at your own pace. Gozo is much more rural and quieter than Malta; therefore, the distances are shorter, and the traffic is looser, so you can cover the entire Island in only one day.

Start your day with a generous breakfast and a delicious coffee at one of the terraces in Independence Square, Gozo

Victoria, the capital of Gozo, was named in honor of Queen Victoria of England in 1887. Rabat, as the locals call it, is a vibrant small town with narrow streets housing many restaurants and Gozitan handicraft shops.

Start your day with a generous breakfast and a delicious coffee at one of the terraces in Independence Square, just near the Citadel entrance. You will spot many locals chatting and drinking their morning coffee.

Cittadella’s Walls

wandering through the Citadel in Gozo island, one day trip itinerary

Victoria’s Citadel is a restored fortress dating back to the Bronze Age, with a few families living within the Citadel today. The area is peaceful as the charming narrow streets now accommodate an old prison, a church, museums, small shops, and a coffee house.

The ancient fortified town is Gozo’s main attraction and a must for everyone spending one day in Gozo. A walk along its walls offers beautiful panoramic views over Rabat and its surroundings. So take your time, stroll around, and embrace the silence of the place.

lovely views over Gozo island from the Citadel - one day trip itinerary

NOTE . The entrance is free of charge , but you will have to pay a small fee if you fancy visiting the inside museums. The access to the Citadel is done through a modern glass elevator.

Parking is easy, just outside the Citadel, but you will pay a small amount to the parking attendant.

Ta’ Dbiegi Artisan Village

If you want to learn more about the Gozitans’ handicrafts, you should stop at the Ta’Dbiegi craft village just off the road from Gharb to Dwejra Bay. There are often artists at work, so you can watch them performing. You can find everything from local metal artwork to glass blowing, from pottery items to leather and stone souvenirs, from lace and cotton to jewelry pieces. You will need no more than an hour here, rambling from shop to shop, talking to local artists, and admiring their works.

Note . Ta’Dbiegi Artisan Village is free to visit.

Parking is easy, just outside the artisan village, free of charge . If you’re hungry, you can grab a snack at the on-site eatery.

Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary

view over the Ta'Pinu Sanctuary

Ta’ Pinu is a tranquil place; therefore, a visit to this place should be on your Gozo day trip itinerary. Located just outside the Gharb Village, the church is stunning in spectacular countryside with nothing else around.

Back in 1883, a woman from the nearby village heard the voice of Mary Our Lady in the little church, so the place soon became a pilgrimage center. Therefore, a sanctuary was built between 1920 and 1931 just in front of the original church.

As soon as you approach the church, you will be amazed by the 14 huge handcrafted mosaics portraying the Cross’s Stations. After taking some lovely exterior photos, walk inside and admire the interior.

NOTE. The entrance is free.

Parking is easy, just opposite the Ta Pinu Sanctuary, and free of charge .

Azure Window

fallen Azure Window, Gozo

If you’ve heard about Gozo, you’ve heard about the famous arch structure Azure Window. It was a must on everyone’s list when visiting Gozo. Unfortunately, the arch crashed during a harsh storm on March 8th, 2017. Now, the location has become popular among divers from all over the world.

Blue Grotto Gozo

Blue Grotto Gozo

Next to the fallen Azure Window, you will bump into a small bay offering access to the sea through a tiny cave opening. You’ll see many divers coming and leaving and few people swimming here. There are souvenir shops and eateries if you want to buy handicrafts or have a cold drink.

Going on a boat tour that takes you through the tiny cave to the sea is a must for anyone spending one day in Gozo. The boatman will take you on a 15-minute boat ride to see the lagoon’s crystal clear water, the corals and the jellyfish, the limestone cliffs, the fallen Azure Window, and other interesting rock formations.

Note . The cost for a 15-minute ride to see the Blue Grotto – 4€ / 4,5USD

Wied il-Ghasri

Wied il-Ghasri, Gozo, one day trip itinerary

The narrow and hidden bay of Wied il-Ghasri is a popular place for divers and those seeking a secluded bathing area. The landscape at Wied il-Ghasri is unique and worth a quick stop.

Park the car at the end of the road and walk downhill until you reach the bay. As you go down the 125 steps, you’ll have some spectacular views. The water is ideal for snorkeling, so if you choose to go for a swim, bring your goggles and wear sea shoes.

Note . Parking and access are free of charge.

Marsalforn Salt Pans

Marsalforn Salt Pans, Gozo, one day trip itinerary

As you drive to the idyllic town Marsalforn, you will bump into a 3km long stretch of saltpans carved into the rock. You can see locals working manually and scratching for crystals during summer. The 350-year-old salt pans are gorgeous and attract many visitors year-round. Stop along the coast as often as you want and take plenty of photos.

Marsalforn Town

the quiet little bay of Marsalforn

Passing the salt pans, stop to the quiet little bay of Marsalforn. It’s worth stopping if you want to see an authentic small fishing village. It is not a great place to swim, but there are plenty of restaurants and bars along the seafront if you need a rest.

Ggantija Temple Complex

The megalithic temple complex of Ggantija is another must-on-a-day trip itinerary if you love history. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is almost 6,000 years old, older than the Great Pyramids and Stonehenge. Some of the megaliths weigh over fifty tons and exceed five meters in length. The site was a pilgrimage place for Malta’s ancient inhabitants.

Ggantija means giant’s grotto in Maltese. According to archaeologists, the temple walls were built in one day and one night by a giant female named Sunsuna while nursing a baby.

If you didn’t drive to Gozo, booking a tour with hotel pick-up from Malta is most suitable. I chose a tour that offers entry to the Ggantija megalithic temples, the medieval Citadel fortress, and a t ourist lunch with a glass of wine. BOOK YOUR TOUR HERE

views from the cliffs above the Ramla Bay in one day in Gozo itinerary

Walk along the hill ridge to get a good capture of the beach.

Some spare time at the beach or a good swim is all you need to unwind after all that sightseeing. Advertised as one of the best beaches in the Mediterranean, well, that’s arguable. But Ramla Bay is one of the best beaches in Malta overall.

The red sand strike has charm, mainly when not packed with locals or tourists. There are some big rocks, so how to get to the water is unpredictable. But if you head to the right of the beach, a nice swim is guaranteed.

There is a nice restaurant serving delicious food. If you love eating fish, try the fish of the day, usually lampuki (the Maltese name for bream).

Note . Parking is easy and free of charge ,  but I suspect that finding a proper parking place might be a struggle during the summer months.

Mgarr Harbour

views over the city from Mgarr Harbour

If time allows you, stop for a while at Mgarr, the small harbor where the ferry to Malta leaves.

Stroll along the lovely promenade, discover a few monuments or enjoy some ice cream on one of the wooden benches with a harbor view. At the end of the path, you will reach Iz-Zewwiega bay, a popular swimming place among locals.

The most prominent landmark of Mgarr is the Church of the Madonna of Lourdes. Built in a Gothic style, this beautiful church is easy to reach from the village by car or foot.

Gozo by Car. How to Spend One Day in Gozo Itinerary

First part of our day in gozo: ferry to gozo – breakfast near the citadel – visit the citadel – stop at the craft village.

We chose to get on an early ferry to Gozo on a weekday in October as we wanted to get the most out of our day. As soon as we arrived at the ferry, we embarked, and soon after, we left. There wasn’t much going on, and we ended up going up on the deck to take some photos.

having the best Maltese breakfast

We reached Gozo’s small Island in no more than 25 minutes and drove to Victoria. We found a parking space near Independence Square and decided to have breakfast, as we left Malta without having any. So our first stop was at Cafe Jubilee, near the Citadel, where we had a delicious breakfast. We actually split one Maltese sandwich as it was huge! Don’t you agree?

We strolled for a while around the area, and soon after, we proceeded to the Citadel. The place was deserted since it was already low season. We wandered through the Citadel without seeing a single person, and it felt like we were rambling through a deserted old city. Crazy, right? But the views from the walls are beautiful, and the visit was well worth it.

The weather wasn’t so appealing by now, although we had plenty of sunshine later, so we stopped at the Craft Village. We wanted to buy some Maltese souvenirs; therefore, we strolled around the village. We didn’t rush and had time to observe the workers and buy handicrafts.

The second part of our day in Gozo: Ta’Pinu Sanctuary – Inland Sea (Azzure Window – Blue Grotto of Gozzo)

girl taking photos of the mosaics of Ta Pinu Sanctuary

The next stop on our day trip itinerary was the Ta Pinu Sanctuary, which we loved! The interior of the church and the exterior are beautiful. And the mosaics are stunning! With no one around, we really enjoyed the serenity of this sanctuary.

Next, it was time to drive to the Inland Sea, witness the fallen Azure window, and discover the Blue Grotto of Gozo. The temperature was over 30 degrees, so we cooled down at one of the terraces near the cave. We couldn’t leave this place without touring the grotto on a boat. And we are so glad we did it, as the views were beautiful.

The third part of our day in Gozo: Salt Pans of Marsalforn – Malsarforn Bay  – Ramla Bay

On our way to Ramla Bay, we stopped at Marsalforn Salt Pans, and I must confess, that is my favorite place in Gozo. We’ve seen the salt pans from Malta, but those are much more appealing. A quick stop at Marsalforn Bay and back in the car.

Although mentioned on our one day in Gozo itinerary, we skipped the Ggantija Temple Complex to relax at the beach for a while. After so much sightseeing, we decided to chill at Ramla Bay, where we discovered an almost empty beach and cherished it.

Last part of our day in Gozo: Mgarr Harbour – ferry to Malta

We left Ramla Bay and drove to Mgarr, where we walked slightly on the promenade while waiting for the next ferry and having an ice cream. The area is quite lovely, and the boardwalk is quite long. Definitely stop here if time allows you.

Malta Travel Resources

Get an esim before the trip.

Because phones have become our most important devices, it’s necessary to have a data connection as soon as you step foot in a different country. Your home data plan might only work if you paid for a much more expensive package, finding wifi connections in airports or train stations might be tricky, and seeking a local store to buy a SIM card might be exhausting. Forget all of that!

You just purchase an e-SIM, install it on your phone, and activate the plan when you’re ready to use it. Getting out of the plane and instantly connecting to data was a game changer for me. I didn’t have to waste time standing in line to get a local SIM card or finding a wifi connection to book a taxi to reach my hotel.

If you ask me, getting an e-SIM is a quintessential part of traveling. There is no physical installation and no long-term commitments. And the best part is that you can always top up or purchase a new plan through the app. Pretty convenient, right? You can get an e-sim card with AIRALO .

Secure your travel insurance

We never leave home without travel insurance designed to cover our expenses if something goes wrong. If you’re still on the lookout for travel insurance for your trip to Malta, I highly recommend HEYMONDO, a trusted insurance provider for leisure and business trips, backpackers, long-term travelers, and digital nomads. Their travel insurance protects against theft, flight delays, injury, illness, cancellations, and much more.

A Day Trip to Gozo – Exploring Malta’s Sister Island

Gozo is one of the three islands that make up the European island nation of Malta. Gozo – sometimes called Malta’s sister island – is smaller and more rural than the bigger main island, but it’s still filled with interesting sites.  Spending time on Gozo is an essential part of any Malta travel itinerary.  While Gozo does offer plenty of lodging options, many Gozo visitors experience this island while on a day trip.  Taking a day trip to Gozo is quite easy. Let me show you what our day trip to Gozo was like.

My Day Trip to Gozo Vision

When I plan a day trip, I inevitably develop a vision for the day’s events. Of course, as with most travel adventures, day trips don’t always go as planned.  And our day trip to Gozo was no different.  My vision –  rent some scooters and enjoy the island air blowing against our faces, while gliding along the quiet roads, while leisurely visiting most of the islands major sites.

Reality? Well….keep reading.

Getting to Gozo

Our day trip to Gozo originated in Malta’s capital city Valletta.  From here, the Gozo Fast Ferry takes passengers on a 45 minute trip up along the eastern coast of Malta, then across the Gozo Channel to the southern end of Gozo.  It only costs 15 Euro for the round trip, and the interior is quite comfortable.

(The alternative is the Gozo Channel Ferry that operates between Malta’s north shore and Gozo’s south shore.  This is the best option if you have a rental car, but if staying in the Valletta area, the Fast Ferry is much more convenient)

The only disadvantage of the Fast Ferry is the schedule.  The service doesn’t even leave on an hourly basis.  Our only options were a 7, 8, or 10am departure. 7 and 8 were just a little too early for our vacationing bodies.  This meant our day trip to Gozo didn’t actually start on actual Gozo soil until around 10:45.

Then, we had to choose between a 4:15pm, 5:15pm, or 7:15pm departure time when booking our return.   We opted for the 5:15 pm return, giving us only 6.5 hours on the island.  Is 6.5 hours enough time for a day trip to Gozo?  Well…keep reading.

Mrs. TT’s Scooter Bucket List

Mrs. TT has a dream of driving scooters in Europe.  As I researched how we would travel around Gozo, I discovered that scooter rental is an option.  I’m always happy to make her happy, and she was ecstatic to finally have the chance.  A few days before our day trip to Gozo,  I made scooter rental reservations via text with Mgarr Tourist Services (located just a few steps from the Gozo ferry terminal) and we were set.

Unfortunately, driving scooters in Europe is still on Mrs TT’s bucket list….

When we arrived at Mgarr Tourist Services, Paul took one look at us, and talked us out of scooter rental.  Our general lack of scooter experience was probably also a consideration for him, too.  We told him that we’ve both driven scooters in the distant past and asked for a quick lesson, but he strongly suggested that we take the RZR 4×4 instead.  And even though it cost a little more (100 Euro), I didn’t feel he was upselling us.  I think he was genuinely concerned for our safety.

And in retrospect, after actually driving around Gozo, we had no regrets.  Traffic was busier than I anticipated, road speeds were higher than I anticipated, and we had directional challenges at times – something that always reduces focus.  I can see where our limited scooter experience wouldn’t have been enough.

I’ve driven a RZR before.  (In fact, you can click here to read about our RZR adventure near Kanab Utah ).  So, only a quick refresher was needed and off we went.

The Map and The Plan

Before we left, Paul showed us the most important sites on the island on a tourist map, along with a suggested route for the day.

Now of course, being The Thorough Tripper, I had already researched these and had a general sense of our goals for the day.  The Ggantija Temples topped my list and I also absolutely wanted to see the cliffs along the island’s southwestern coastline.  His suggested route looked quite ambitious to me, and I wondered aloud if we could pull it off in our 6 remaining hours.  He assured me that we could.

We’ve always gotta eat though.  And we were hungry by then.  So we headed straight for lunch, about 15 minutes away in Xaghra, near the Ggantija Temples.  While I would have loved to try one of the many great restaurants on Gozo, European lunches aren’t always the quickest.  We generally don’t mind that slower European meal pace – except on a tight day trip schedule.

We chose what we hoped would be a fast meal at Cafe Reale, located next to Xaghra’s church.   And we guessed right – it was quick and good too.  We were back on the road within 45 minutes.

Ggantija Temples

Why did the Ggantija Temples top my Gozo wish list?  Because this UNESCO World Heritage site is the second oldest free-standing manmade structure on earth, dating to 3600 BC – over 5000 years old!! (A temple complex in Turkey is the oldest.)  I would say that Ggantija is not only a Gozo must-see, but one of the most important sites in all of Malta.

The islands of Malta are home to several different monolithic temple sites and Ggantija is the oldest. The term monolithic refers to the giant slabs of hand-strewn rock used to construct these ancient religious structures.  The builders didn’t have written language.  Consequently little is known about their culture or the exact purpose of these temples, but it’s fairly clear from the archeologic record that animal sacrifice and other religious ceremonies took place inside.

The temple site is situated on the side of a hill, overlooking the surrounding countryside. And it’s awe-inspiring to walk through.  After all, it’s The Second Oldest Structure on Earth!

Ta’ Kola Windmill

The Ta’ Kola Windmill sits only a block north of the Temples. Several centuries ago, lots of windmills dotted the island.  This is one of the few remaining.  It dates to the late 1700s and now serves as a museum. We didn’t take the time to go inside. Its outside is photogenic though.

Calypso’s Cave

Calypso’s Cave was next up on the tourist map route. I had read about Calypso’s Cave while preparing for our visit.  And I had decided that it wasn’t worth visiting,  I’d read that the cave itself could not be accessed. So, despite its history (see below), the site didn’t seem interesting to me.

Instead, I determined that we would quickly move on to the next sites on the map – the seaside village of Marsalforn, the Xwenji Salt Pans , and the Basilica of Ta’ Pinu .

However,  we found that the road to Marsalforn was blocked, and Google Maps continually redirected us on a route with sign after sign pointing towards…Calypso’s Cave.

So I gave in to what I figured was fate’s message and we continued on to see the Cave.

Calypso’s Cave has been known for thousands of years, and is reputed to be the cave in which Homer’s Ulysses was kept captive by the sea nymph Calypso for 7 years in The Odyssey.

Now, it seems pretty much forgotten – surprisingly so for one of Gozo’s “top sites”.  The small  parking area was empty and any direct access to the Cave itself was blocked off.  We were able to stand above it, where we did have a great view down to one of Gozo’s most popular beaches – Ramla Beach

Our visit to the disappointing cave was significantly shorter than Ulysses’.

We next tried to find another route to Marsalforn and the northern sites of Gozo, but to no avail.  What seemed to be the only through-road from our location was blocked.

By this time, we only had 2.5 hours left on our day trip to Gozo, and so I decided to forget about going to the northern half of Gozo, focusing instead on my other goal for the day – the island’s southwestern cliffs.

Xlendi & The Cliffs

The southwest Gozo coastline is defined by tall limestone cliffs.  My original vision for our day trip to Gozo included hiking out to an area called the Ta Cenc Cliffs.  However as our time was ticking down, I concluded that in the interest of time, we would stop at the seaside town of Xlendi instead.   I had previously read that a portion of the cliffs could be seen here.  Plus I knew that Xlendi itself was picturesque.

So we crossed the island, passing through the capital city of Victoria (my hoped-for last stop of the day if time allowed), and parked next to Xlendi Bay.

Here we found cliffs and a beautiful inlet. We took a short hike around the inlet and out to the coastline, where we found a great collection of salt pans.

Plus, further views out along the area’s spectacular limestone cliffs.

The Citadel

By the time we finished in Xlendi, we only had about an hour left before we need to return to the ferry port.  Just enough time to quickly head back to Victoria and check it out its main attraction – the Citadel.

The Citadel was Gozo’s principal fortress, and the current version was constructed around 1600.  It is perched atop one of the highest hills on the island, and the city of Victoria sits at its feet. Gozo’s most important church, dating from the late 1700s, was constructed inside its walls.

Fortunately, there is a small parking lot at the top of the hill, right next to the main entrance. This was big time saver for us as we hurried to finish up our day trip to Gozo.  Even then, by the time we parked, we only had 30 minutes to explore The Citadel. And our visit did feel rushed. Nonetheless, we were able to walk through most of it.

I especially appreciated the views from the outer high outer walls out across the island and down to the city of Victoria

Back to The Ferry

As we left Victoria and hurried back to drop off our RZR, I counted up our ticked-off sites for the day.  We had only managed to see five of Gozo’s top sites.  My initial skepticism at Paul’s ambitious itinerary for us had been correct.  Plus my vision for the day in no way matched reality.

But, our day trip to Gozo was certainly no bust.  We successfully visited the two sites I most wanted to see, had a nice lunch in a Gozitan town square, and criss-crossed the island in a UTV – not exactly the scooter experience we had hoped for, but still fun nonetheless.

Alternative Ways to Experience Gozo

I personally prefer the flexibility and adventure of our do-it-yourself approach to travel, but there are certainly easier ways to experience Gozo.

Let me first suggest though that Gozo is worth more than just a day trip.  As we hurriedly explored the island, we found ourselves wishing that we had carved a few days out of our Malta itinerary to stay somewhere on the island and fully explore Gozo at a more leisurely pace.

But, if you only have time for a day trip to Gozo here are some alternative approaches to seeing the sites on the island.

Hop-on Hop-off Bus

The City SightSeeing Hop-On Hop-Off Bus operates two different routes around the island with stops at 15 different sites.  The routes conveniently begin and end at the Gozo ferry terminal.

Organized Tours

Several companies offer organized tours of the island, including a self-drive option with various types of recreational vehicles to choose from.  Many of these companies also provide transport to Gozo from the main island. Viator is a great way to explore this option (see below).  But note that many of these tours don’t include Ggantija on their itinerary – so read the details carefully when choosing one if Ggantija is a priority for you (as it should be).

Our day trip to Gozo was just a small part of our 3 weeks exploring Malta. You can check out all the posts in my Malta series by clicking any of the links below.

One of the best day trips to Gozo from Malta includes a trip to the Ggantija Temples - a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to around 3400 BC .

The tour begins by getting picked up from your hotel in Malta and getting the ferry to Gozo. Transport will take you to the temples from here before heading towards Victoria Cittadella .

Wandering around the impressive Cittadella is one of the best things to do in Victoria , Gozo’s capital city. It’s easy to get lost in the history inside the fortified walls of the Citadel.

A quick stop at Xlendi Bay follows before rounding off the trip at Dwejra Bay, home to the beautiful inland sea - a small bay surrounded by cliffs that features a dramatic 65m natural tunnel out to the main sea.

Having the chance to dive into the crystal-clear water at the Blue Lagoon will live long in the memory, and being able to step foot on the uninhabited island of Comino is a real highlight.

The sightseeing tour bus has roughly 15 different stops and takes you to the majority of the highlights on the island. One of our personal favourites is Ta' Pinu , an impressive Roman Basilica!

With popular spots such as Victoria and Xlendi Bay also included in the itinerary, there is little wonder why many choose this as their favourite day-trip option around Gozo.

A 10 hour full day sightseeing tour is a fantastic way to explore everything Gozo offers.

Beginning with a pick-up directly from your hotel , you jump on the ferry across to Gozo before beginning your exploration of the island. Along the way, you will stop at Ta’ Pinu Basilica - a 100-year-old National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin or Ta’ Pinu - before heading to the nearby city of Victoria.

High above the city is Victoria Cittadella , a fortified citadel that is home to prison cells and incredible Maltese architecture .

One of the strengths of this day trip is that it includes a buffet lunch in Victoria on top of all the sightseeing - for us, this makes it one of the best day trips to Gozo because everything is taken care of for you. There are no hidden costs (aside from the optional boat ride at the inland sea in Dwejra).

The Gozo, Comino and Blue Lagoon Sightseeing Cruise does exactly what is advertised - a tour that introduces you to all of the highlights of the Maltese archipelago in one day.

As with the other boat tours on the list, it follows a similar itinerary in that the tour takes you to Comino , the uninhabited sister island of Malta and Gozo, before venturing to the Blue Lagoon.

Perfect for swimming, snorkelling and diving , the Blue Lagoon is a real highlight of the trip - with the chance of jumping into the water from the boat's top deck an extra bonus!

You are then treated to a 3-hour stop in Gozo, where you can rent land transport for a small additional charge to take you around the island.

Gozo, Comino and Blue Lagoon - Bus and Boat Tour (from Sliema)

Another great option for a day trip to Gozo from Malta is the boat tour that begins in Sliema , rather than the more crowded St Paul’s Bay.

You begin the day-trip by getting a ferry over to Gozo, where you will jump on board the sightseeing bus at Mgarr Harbour and be taken to a number of spots around the island. While the stops are relatively short, it is a great way to see many of the best things to see in Gozo in a short amount of time .

After sightseeing in Gozo, you then board a different boat to cruise towards Comino and the beautiful Blue Lagoon . You remain here for around an hour and a half with the chance to swim and sunbathe to your heart’s content.

Quick tip: Malta is one of the best snorkelling destinations in Europe so bring a snorkel set with you for your trip to Gozo. It’s one of the most important things to pack when visiting Malta and Gozo .

Self-Driving E-Jeep Sightseeing Tour of Gozo

Self driven e-Jeep Sightseeing in Gozo

Self driven e-Jeep Sightseeing in Gozo

Driving your own Jeep on this self-driven sightseeing tour of Gozo is an incredibly unique way of embarking on a day trip to Gozo.

Weather permitting, the tour begins with a private boat transfer from the main island (or regular ferry if the seas are rough) before being taken to complete the necessary jeep rental paperwork. The electric jeeps can accommodate up to 3 guests and are an excellent way to see all the sights in Gozo.

You are given a quick demonstration and practice before embarking in convoy around the island. A light Gozitan lunch is provided on the day-trip so you are adequately refreshed and ready for the rest of the driving.

If weather conditions are tricky, the tour operators provide you with a chauffeured tuk-tuk ride around Gozo - which adds an extra peace of mind if you choose to visit Gozo on a day-trip in Winter.

Gozo Day Trip from Malta - Doing it by yourself

The final option we are going to highlight in this article is choosing to organise a day trip to Gozo from Malta by yourself. It is entirely possible to visit Gozo independently, but, it is worth noting that public transport on the island is limited, so it may involve paying for taxis once you arrive.

You will of course, need to make your own way to the island before exploring. We have an entire article explaining how to get to Gozo from Malta , so we won’t go into too much detail here, but you essentially have to make your way to the ferry terminal in Valletta. It is very straightforward and there are ferry crossings every hour throughout the day.

The best option once you arrive at the port in Mgarr Harbour is to get on the 301 public bus that takes you into the centre of Gozo, to the capital city of Victoria.

You can see a full timetable for the 301 public bus here .

Victoria is a great base for your Gozo day-trip because it is in the centre of the island. From the capital, you can either get a taxi to explore the island, jump on board public buses or even opt to buy a ticket for the hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus that stops at all the major sights in Gozo.

Top tip: in our experience, trying to see all of the highlights of Gozo in one day can feel a little rushed when you’re not on an organised day-trip. We would recommend staying for one-night in Gozo, perhaps in one of the best boutique hotels in Gozo , and then spreading your trip out over 2 days.

There we have it folks, a comprehensive round-up of all the best day trips to Gozo from Malta. Gozo is a beautiful hidden gem of the Maltese archipelago and it definitely needs to be explored when you visit Malta.

For many people visiting Malta planning a day trip to Gozo is at the top end of their itinerary. This beautiful Maltese island is significantly more rural than the mainland which is why so many people have a holiday home here or choose to visit for a few relaxing hours. Spending one day on Gozo couldn’t be easier thanks to the quick ferry service from the tip of Malta that takes no more than 25 minutes. Visitors can also opt for the new quick ferry service directly from Valletta which takes around 45 minutes.

No two attractions on Gozo are more than half an hour from each other. I would highly recommend renting a car in Malta even if it’s just for the day so that you can easily explore all areas of the island. There are of course plenty of bus services available, including City Sightseeing Gozo, that you can take advantage of if you’re not comfortable driving.

Gozo’s history dates back as far as 5000 BC so you can expect to find quite a lot of history on all corners of the island. Gozo is also heavily tied to Greek mythology as the island is said to be the famous island of Ogygia where Calypso holds Odysseus captive for several years. You can even visit her cave which was sadly closed when we visited Gozo. Nevertheless there are still plenty of incredible places to visit during a day trip to Gozo and some fantastic places to eat too.

Table of Contents

Places to visit during a day trip to gozo, where to eat on gozo.

Is Gozo worth visiting? Absolutely! Whether you plan on taking a Gozo jeep tour, have your own rental car, or plan to explore the island on foot there are a lot of beautiful attractions to visit. I would recommend getting the ferry to Gozo as early as possible so you have the full day ahead of you. If you’re driving to the island the ferry is paid upon your return to Malta and you’ll pay an additional fee per passenger. Here are a few places to visit during a day trip to Gozo.

An historic windmill in the centre of a village on Gozo.

During your trip to Gozo you can’t miss the opportunity to visit Xaghra . This small town is home to a few key attractions on Gozo and has some nice restaurants near the Xaghra Parish Church to choose from. One of the top things to do on Gozo is to visit the megalithic Ġgantija Temples which were built earlier than Stonehenge and are among the oldest monuments in the world. Nearby you’ll also find the Ta’ Kola Windmill and Xerri’s Grotto which are both interesting to visit.

The Discover Gozo pass includes entry to the temples and windmill as well as the museums inside the cittadella for just €13.00 .

A red sand beach with waves in the water on Gozo.

Among all the bays on Gozo to visit, Ramla Bay is one of the most popular with both locals and tourists. The bay is home to the famous red sand Ramla Beach which is considerably longer than other beaches on Gozo. This beach will get very busy in the summer so arrive early to snag one of the few parking spaces here. While you’re in the area you can also visit the Tal-Mixta Cave for a unique view of the bay as well as Calypso Cave .

Large sandstone formation along the water on Gozo.

Xwejni Bay is a beautiful spot along the northern part of Gozo, especially around sunset. The bay is famous for its salt pans which have been harvested here since ancient times. A large portion of the coastline is lined with these salt pans which you’re free to walk among as long as you’re respectful. There’s also a very unique rock formation here which you can get the perfect view of from the salt pans. If you’re already visiting Ramla Bay during your day on Gozo, this area is a short 15 minute drive away.

Street declining from the citadel to centre of Victoria.

One of the top places to visit on Gozo during a day trip is Victoria . This town is the unofficial capital of Gozo and is where the famous cittadella is located. The town itself isn’t very big so if you’re pressed for time you can spend a few hours here and see most of it. I would recommend spending most of your time in Victoria exploring the citadel which is free to enter minus the various museums inside. Victoria is where you’ll find a large majority of Gozo’s restaurants too.

Tall white cliffs with blue water below on Gozo.

Xlendi Bay is a popular tourist destination on Gozo, particularly for divers and swimmers. The fishing village here has a number of restaurants to dine at and the very small beach within the bay is ideal for people of all ages. If you enjoy hiking there is a relatively easy trail leading up to Xlendi Tower where you can take in the views of the impressive cliffs and the beautiful blue water below. There are plenty of free parking spaces in Xlendi but you may have to drive around for a bit during peak season to find a vacant one.

Ta' Pinu

A large sandstone shrine in the centre of a green field.

The western part of the island is full of unique places to visit. One of these is the Ta’ Pinu National Shrine which was built on the site of a miracle and is often visited by the pope. The shrine is more impressive on the outside than the inside, so don’t worry if you only have time for a brief photo. Entry to Ta’ Pinu is free but appropriate attire is required or else you’ll be asked to wear a covering.

A large rock in the sea separated from the cliffs on Gozo.

Many day trips to Gozo revolve around Dwejra Bay . This impressive coastal location is home to various attractions including the Azure Window that sadly collapsed in recent years which was a known Game of Thrones filming location on Gozo . The famous Blue Hole is also located here as is Dwejra Tower , Fungus Rock , and the Inland Sea . Sadly the water was very rough when we visited so we couldn’t enjoy swimming in the Blue Hole but hopefully you’ll have better luck.

View of the island of Comino with Gozo in the background.

Planning a Gozo and Comino day trip is doable if you only have time to see both in one day. There are plenty of Gozo tours that will drop you off on the island of Comino for a short period of time so you can check out the Blue Lagoon . Other than the Blue Lagoon there isn’t a lot to see here but it’s a nice island to hike around. The Blue Lagoon gets incredibly busy after 09:30 so get to Comino as early as possible if you want to enjoy this very small beach area without the crowds.

Wondering where to eat on Gozo? The island may be small but it’s home to a lot of beautiful locally run eateries serving up some delicious dishes. If you’re planning a busy day trip to Gozo then it may be worth grabbing some food on the go during the day. You can either food shop or you can opt for one of the many food trucks on Gozo that are popular with the locals.

Fresh vegetarian sandwich served on Maltese flatbread.

If you’re starting your day in Victoria then a great option for a quick and cheap breakfast is Bunna Café . They’re located along one of the main streets of the town, close to the citadel, and have a very nice selection of sandwiches available. This is also a nice place for a quick coffee or a freshly squeezed orange juice.

Crunch N' Munch

Selection of meat sandwiches with a side of mac n' cheese.

Crunch N’ Munch was one of our favourite places to eat on Gozo. This relatively new food truck is ideal if you’re visiting Gozo on a budget but still want a good quality meal. Their most popular dishes are their smoked meat sandwiches which are insanely good and when paired with a side of mac n’ cheese you really can’t go wrong. Make sure you upgrade your sandwich to the ftira bread for a traditional Maltese lunch and you’ll be full until the end of your day trip to Gozo.

Al Sale Restaurant

Large bowl of pasta with burrata on top.

Located in Xaghra, Al Sale Restaurant is a popular restaurant on Gozo with a stunning view of the parish church from its balcony. We dined here in the evening and had a delicious three course meal. Their menu is based around Mediterranean cuisine and there are some unique options to choose from such as sea bass baked in a salt crust and Tagliolini Pistachio & Burrata .

Whatever dish you choose from Al Sale Restaurant is sure to impress you, and as the restaurant isn’t far from the ferry terminal it may be the perfect place to eat before heading back to Malta.

Maldonado Bistro

Large pan fried fish served on bed of fennel.

One of the best restaurants on Gozo is Maldonado Bistro who serve a delicious menu based around modern Mediterranean cuisine. As much of their menu as possible is locally sourced so everything is incredibly tasty and fresh. Mediterranean cuisine is largely seafood oriented but dishes such as their black truffle agnolotti are perfect for vegetarians. The restaurant is set in the basement of an historic building too so you really get the full Maltese experience dining here.

Planning a day trip to Gozo doesn’t have to be complicated, but if this is your first time visiting this Maltese island then you may have to be selective about what attractions on Gozo to visit. If you arrive early in the morning though it’s very possible to travel to all corners of Gozo with a rental vehicle. Spending 2 days on Gozo or more may be the best option if you want to fully explore the island, and there are some beautiful places to stay on Gozo to choose from.

Hopefully this little guide covering places to visit during a day trip to Gozo will help you plan your trip here. If you have any questions about Gozo please get in touch either through Instagram or by leaving me a comment below!

malta day trip to gozo

Writer Kerry Walker loved exploring the backstreets of Mdina on her recent trip to Malta © Kerry Walker

In search of a shot of sea and spring sunshine, Lonely Planet writer Kerry Walker headed to Malta and Gozo and fell hard for these twin islands in the Med. Here she shares the highlights of her trip.

With its one-of-a-kind history, cinematic cities built high and mighty by the Knights of St John, ravishing coastlines and distinctive cuisine embracing Italian and Middle Eastern influences, Malta grabbed me when I first visited 15 years ago - and I have longed to go back ever since. This time I managed to squeeze in a mini trip to neighboring Gozo , too.

If you're looking for a perfect time to visit Malta, it's spring with wildflowers blooming, beaches empty, room rates low, crowds virtually non-existent and temperatures hovering around 20°C. While the sea is still a bit nippy (unless you’re a cold-water fan), the mild days are perfect for other activities - from coastal hikes and runs to horse riding and kayaking, and just hanging out piazza-side in beautiful gold-stone cities.

Traditional colourful Maltese fishing boats with traditional Maltese housing in St George's Bay

Where did you stay? What was the vibe?

The Radisson Blu Resort in St Julian’s , where the crisply designed rooms in seaside blues and whites come with front-row views of the Mediterranean. It’s a nice central base for zipping around the island, just a 10-minute walk from St George’s Bay, where you’ll find a sandy beach and loads of nightlife, and a 20-minute ride from Valletta .

There are several pools, a gym, small spa and it’s right on the edge of the Pembroke Nature Reserve (perfect for morning runs). The breakfast buffet was a cut above, with freshly made pancakes and omelets, and I had a great risotto in the hotel's Le Bistro  restaurant, which bigs up locally farmed and fished ingredients.

Snapshot from scenes of daily life in Malta including people dining at cafe, gondolas crusing on St Julians Bay and backstreets of Valleta

Best way to start the day in Malta?

A morning run. There’s something special about getting up to see the pink blush of sunrise and slip into running gear as the first light creeps along the coast. At this early hour, it’s silent but for the gentle shush of waves. My go-to run is the Pembroke Nature Reserve in St Julian’s, where the rocky shore is a fragrant mass of wildflowers.

Otherwise, you’ll find me in Valletta, a gorgeous ochre-stone city of domes, Renaissance palazzi, piazzas, cobbled alleys and streets that rollercoaster down to the sea San Francisco-style. I love passing through Renzo Piano’s City Gate and strolling past townhouses graced with gallariji, ornate wooden balconies, as the city shakes off sleep and coffee pots begin to bubble.

I might go for a freshly roasted cup at retro-cool Lot 61 , followed by oven-warm pastizzi - flaky pastry pockets stuffed with ricotta or minced beef - at posh Caffe Cordina , in business since 1837. It’s right on the square opposite the lavish Grandmaster’s Palace, once the HQ of the Knights of St John.

The ochre-hued backstreets of Mdina

What is a must-visit place in Malta?

Mdina . On a hilltop perch in the island’s heart, this fortified medieval town is film-set stuff. And it has had its moments of fame: Mdina Gate, with its stone bridge over the former city moat, and Mesquita Square, overshadowed by baroque St Paul's Cathedral , both appeared in Game of Thrones Season 1. But for me the real joy is nosing around its mazy alleys, past courtyard cafes and honey-hued palazzi.

The painterly light in these streets makes a photographer out of everyone. You can peel back the layers of the island’s history at the Domus Romana villa , with its Roman mosaics and marble statues, and swanning around the gardens that rim the sturdy bastions put up by the Knights of St John. Book a table for lunch in the gorgeous inner courtyard of The Medina , a 500-year-old Norman residence turned mezze-style restaurant. Stuffed vine leaves, local sweet red prawn carpaccio, slow-cooked confit pork belly - it’s all delicious.

Amouse Bouche at Gracy's Malta

The top spot for dinner in Malta?

OKA’s at the Villa in Balluta Bay really hits the romance mark, with its history, food and a pinch of glamour. This stunningly converted 19th-century palazzo has a terrace peering out across the bay, where you can sip a signature martini (blood-orange gin, amaretto honey, peach juice and smoke bubble) before dinner in the restaurant. The menu is refreshingly Mediterranean with a nod to the Middle East: labneh with crispy lamb, chilli oil and warm pitta, and octopus tagliatelle with preserved lemon and herbs.

If it’s a special occasion, score a table at Gracy’s in Valletta, a 17th-century palazzo reborn as a stylish supper club, with a terrace bar gazing out across the city rooftops. Tom Peters (former sous chef at three-Michelin-starred Maaemo in Oslo) mans the stove, putting a fresh British take on Maltese cuisine in dishes like turbot-and-scallop Wellington with baby leek and champagne beurre-blanc.

A segway and horse-riding tour in Golden Bay, Malta

What is one place in Malta you want people to know about?

Golden Bay. The island’s more rugged northeast coast dispels the myth that Malta doesn’t have any beaches . Here you’ll find Golden Bay and - lovelier still - Riviera Beach, a glorious sweep of sand backed by cliffs. When I went in spring, the coast was very peaceful. If flopping on the beach isn’t your thing, you can trundle along the cliffs by Segway or saddle up at Golden Bay Horse Riding . I tried both and preferred the latter, relaxing into the rhythm of being on horseback as we trotted along the cliffs and through meadows flecked with poppies.

For an adventurous brush with Malta’s history, hook onto a self-guided electric buggy tour with Rolling Geeks . These dive into the Three Cities of Vittoriosa , Senglea and Cospicua, inhabited since Phoenician times, with fascinating snapshots of daily life in their back alleys and piazzas. Stop at the bastion-top Gardjola Gardens in Senglea for ringside views of Valletta’s Grand Harbour.

View of bay through lookout from Tal Mixta Cave in Gozo

How can you get away from the crowds?

Go to Gozo. Just a half-hour ferry ride from Malta, this smaller, greener, quieter isle is an enticing taste of the Med before the dawn of tourism. The World Heritage Ġgantija Temples , older than Egypt’s pyramids, are a megalithic marvel and the island’s biggest crowd-puller, but if you want to dodge the masses, visit in very low season. The same can be said for Ċittadella , a crazily lovely hilltop citadel that was once the acropolis of the Punic-Roman city of Gaulos.

History aside, the island bombards you with natural beauty: the ragged, wave-beaten coast of Dwejra Bay is was pure drama even on a windy, overcast day, with its cliff-wrapped Inland Sea , Fungus Rock (a 60m-high pillar of limestone) and a shoreline mottled with sand dollar sea urchin fossils.

Or walk up to Tal-Mixta Cave, high above the red-gold sweep of Ramla Bay. The island’s dinky proportions mean you can explore a fair bit on foot or bike, but if you fancy going further, Gozo’s fleet of electric tuk-tuks offer insightful guided tours .

Alfred and Mary Attard at their salt workshop

What's one thing you should bring back from Malta?

Ġbejna cheese. Malta’s pungent rounds of handmade sheep and goat’s cheese are famous and with good reason. Buy it fresh and its sweet and creamy, with a wobbly panna cotta consistency, but the sharply tangy, air-dried, wine-pickled variety travels better. In Gozo, buy it at Ta’ Rikardu , tucked in a backstreet behind the baroque cathedral in Ċittadella. While you’re there, pick up a bottle of the prickly pear liqueur they produce on their farm, too.

If there’s time, visit Gozo’s north-coast Xwejni Bay, where you’ll find a chequerboard of salt pans and a tiny rock-cut cave by the sea. Here Alfred Attard is just one of two people left on the island hand-harvesting sea salt according to millennia-old traditions. A bag of his incredibly pure salt makes a fabulous gift.

Are you ready for the ultimate Malta Bucket List?!

Malta is one of the most spectacular places I think I’ve visited to date and I can’t wait to show you the top things to do here.

It’s the country where the azure waters are crystal clear, the buildings all look like they’ve been dipped in honey and at every corner, there’s something beautiful to surprise you.

Whether that be the breathtaking views, the Hollywood movie locations, the epic historical monuments, the mouth-watering food, or the classy shopping and nightlife. Malta really has something for everyone.

So, let’s start tackling this epic bucket list! What will you want to do first?

The ultimate Malta bucket list – 22 incredible things to do in Malta!

1. explore valletta; malta’s capital city.

As we landed into Valletta, I could tell from the plane I was going to love it. The sandstone buildings piled up on the edge of the Mediterranean sea, it was all so effortlessly picturesque.

I was amazed to hear that this city was all built by hand and only took 15 years to complete in 1566!

malta bucket list things to do

A walled city built for war with bastions, fortresses, and a cathedral. It was named after Jean Parisot de la Valette who was grand master of the order of the knights of St. John. An important order in these parts which I will go into a bit more later.

It is a world heritage city and one of the most concentrated historical areas in the world! So, you don’t have to pay to see the history speak to you through the walls. There’s countless of hidden gems all around you to explore in its streets and buildings.

For the commercial heart of the island, it may be surprising to hear that it’s busy by day but you can’t hear a peep at night. By 11 pm most bars, restaurants, and cafés are closed!

Make sure you take some time just to explore the city streets, you won’t regret it.

2. Spy on the city at the Upper Barrakka Gardens

One of my favourite things to do in Malta was the panoramic views offered from the Upper Barrakka Gardens.

Built in the 16th century, these public gardens are FREE to enter. From here you can spy on the whole city including the spectacular grand harbour with the yachts and boats from the rich and famous.

Did you know that Malta is a popular filming location for Hollywood? Movies like Troy, the Da Vinci Code, Murder on the Orient Express, and Gladiator were all filmed here. The gardens are the perfect view to take them all in!

If you’re feeling the heat (in September in was scorching) there’s a little café selling iced coffee – you’re welcome!

3. Be bedazzled by St John’s Co Cathedral

One of the finest examples of Baroque architecture lies in the heart of Valletta, St. John’s Co Cathedral will mesmerise you with it’s beauty. It definitely had the ‘Wow’ factor on me!

If looking up at the sparkling ceiling wasn’t enough, looking down is also a nice surprise. The floor is an artwork in itself with hundreds of decorated marble tombstones.

It’s literally dripping with gold and hangs some of the finest works by the famous painter and blaggard Caravaggio.

Supposedly Caravaggio landed in Malta with a ransom on his head for killing a man in Rome.

He was able to join the knights order despite his crime, was arrested again (for brawling) but managed to escape prison!

I loved Caravaggio’s work before my visit, but I didn’t realise he was such a rebel. The beheading of St. John is his only signed work and tourists flock in their thousands to take a peek every year.

Prices for entry are €10.00 per adult. Ladies must cover shoulders when inside the cathedral. If you don’t have something to cover your shoulders with, you’ll be given a rather drab ‘Hand Maid’s Tale’ looking grey cape.

For more Cathedral visitor information, see here.

4. …Or any Maltese cathedral on that matter!

In fact, I’d say entering any one of Malta’s fabulous cathedrals and churches deserve a spot on the list in itself.

I fell in love with the architecture of the buildings, with the red domes and fabulous Latin details.

As we were here during Malta’s Festa season (see below), all the cathedrals were in full flow with locals praying and paying respects, priests performing mass, and idols out on display. Make sure you don’t miss out on a visit.

5. Be amongst Maltese royalty at Casa Rocca Piccola Palazzo

How does visiting the home of Maltese royalty sound?

The Casa Rocca Piccola is a living museum dating back to the 16th century.

But, beyond a museum it’s a privately owned home of the De Piro family. Nicholas De Piro is a Baron of Budach and the 9th Marquis de Piro of a long line of de Piros!.

Although you won’t receive an audience, you can wander about their beautifully decorated home. Each room had its own character with books, antiques and portraits.

It was a beautiful concoction of curiosities! Make sure you pay a visit. You must visit certain parts of the palace with a guide.

6. Take a Rolling Geeks tour around the city

Before I came to Malta, I had never heard of or knew what a Rolling Geek was but now I’m hooked!

What I loved about this unique concept was that you could take one of their buggies for a spin and explore the three medieval fortified cities of Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua at your own pace.

The Rolling Geek buggy comes with its own GPS, so all you have to do is follow the directions on the screen.

When you’re driving around and reach your destination the buggy will provide you with an audio commentary of what you’re seeing.

It can translate into 8 languages (English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Netherlands, Russian and Mandarin). It even takes selfies of you while you drive, genius!

It’s definitely a way to see the cities in style and, as it’s so small, it can fit into the small alleyways and roads that regular cars can’t. So, you won’t miss a thing.

For more information on these tours see here.    The tour takes 2.5hrs.

7. Visit the Mdina: and see scenes from Game of Thrones

Mdina is a fortified city in Malta which has been frozen in time!

As you walk around admiring all the cathedrals and ancient buildings you’ll pinch yourself in wonder on how it’s managed to remain true to itself since the 16th century.

It’s lamp lit and often called the silent city due to the fact it was the former capital of the country, but then abandoned by the knights of Malta after the great siege in 1530.

Today, it still remains a silent city as it is pretty much free of traffic.

However, you may recognise it by other means; that it’s a famous filming location of Game of Thrones!

As soon as you enter you’ll see gift shops and signs all showing off their claim to fame. Beautiful doorways, courtyards, and viewpoints were all transformed into brothels and battlegrounds!

Make sure you take your time to explore. As it’s a living and working city it’s actually FREE to visit.

8. Take a coffee with a view at the Fontanella tea gardens

Once you are done with exploring Mdina in the searing heat, make sure you take a pew in the famous Fontanella tea gardens . It has one of the most spectacular views of the whole city and beyond and a cracking iced coffee to boot!

It gets ridiculously busy though so you may be waiting for a table. But, I’d say it’s worth it.

9. Hop on a boat to see Valletta harbour at sunset

An ultimate highlight of my trip to Malta was a private boat ride around Valletta harbour at sunset.

It’s the playground for the boats and superyachts of the rich and famous and there are some real beauties docked up.

We set sail with our captain Johnathan and took to the (rather wavy) seas, passing all the iconic spots along the way. Our captain was honestly the cutest host preparing our sandwiches, snacks and even cracking open a cold bottle of wine!

As we sailed into the harbour, the sky turned a fantastic shade of orange and purple. The perfect way to end a day.

10. Celebrate the Maltese Festa season

If you’re lucky enough to be around in Malta for Festa season; you have a real treat in store for you.

The Festa season is a series of long weekends that are dedicated to honour the Christian saints. Locals celebrate by way of worshipping in the churches, decorating the buildings, preparing and sharing yummy food and sweets, partying in the streets and my favourite part; setting off tonnes of fireworks.

Apparently, the villages have low key competitions between each other on who can let off the most so expect the night sky to dazzle with them! It’s truly a magical experience.

We visited the village of Naxxar to witness celebrations but you can check the official website for dates and times of the season.

11. Eat from farm to table at Diar Il-Bniet

Whenever I visit a country one of my favourite parts is sampling the local food and Maltese cuisine wasn’t something I was all to familiar with.

I was so excited when we were going for a farm to table experience at Diar Il-Bniet. The concept goes back to a simpler time. Where the food is locally sourced and grown on the farm and then cropped, prepared and served up on your table. They even have a kitchen on the floor of their restaurant which gives a homely atmosphere.

Feel part of the family with traditional dishes such as Lampuki pie, snails, fish of the day or a mighty pork chop platter like I had.

You can see their Facebook page here.

12. Take the ferry to the small island of Gozo

When I asked for recommendations for Malta before my trip, time and time again Gozo came up.

It’s a smaller sister island of Malta and is somewhere that cannot be missed on your visit. Here is your gateway to Comino (for the blue lagoon) and you can explore history and beauty at every corner.

It is possible to just have a day trip to Gozo and Comino or you can stay on the island itself and spend a few days there If you prefer.

We caught the public ferry from Cirkewwa over to Gozo via the Gozo channel lines. The journey took around 30 minutes.

For a full list of timetables, live updates and fares see the official website here . Don’t forget your camera to snap the views.

13. Enjoy a local wine and cheese tasting

You can’t visit Malta without sampling some of the local wine and cheese. On our tour, we visited the Ta’ Mena Estate to learn about how the local cheese ‘Gbejniet‘ was made.

We saw the whole process all the way from meeting the sheep (where the milk comes from) to production in the kitchen to sampling the final product. The cheese is made from sheep’s milk, salt and rennet and shaped in a cheese hurdle.

It was accompanied in our tasting with some local bread and tomato paste called Kunserva that’s made from juicy sundried tomatoes. The longer the wait the stronger the potency and we got to sample some that was almost five years old!

For afters, we washed it down with a cold glass of local white wine and got to explore some of the gorgeous vineyards in the sunshine! It was a real treat learning about Maltese traditions and where the food is sourced from – If you’re a foodie, or just like sampling local food, I would highly recommend it.

14. Take in the views from Gozo Citadella

The Citadella in Gozo is in an area called Victoria that has been inhabited since the Bronze Age!

The medieval citadel is now perched high on the hill and boasts many historical buildings including the Cathedral of Assumption.

This small city has been through the wars of the ages including the Neolithic, Medieval and even more recently French and British rule. But, amazingly despite all this it has remained intact with little reconstruction needed.

The panoramic views from the city are truly fantastic and you can get a vista of Victoria and beyond. See here for more details.

15. Visit the Ggantija Temples, the oldest free standing monuments in the world!

You may be surprised to know that Gozo has a long and extensive history dating all the way back to 3600 BC !

The Ggantija temples , built even before the likes of Stonehenge, are standing stone monuments that were used for worship and ceremonial gatherings. They are now a UNESCO world heritage site for the likes of you and me.

Here, you can learn about Malta in the Neolithic period and all the excavation work that has taken place. It’s really quite impressive.

They have showcased a lot of the excavation in their informative museum with videos, dress ups and interactive displays. Okay, that part’s for kids but it makes it more entertaining !

16. Cave hop on the small island of Comino

I could literally spend all day cave hopping on the small island of Comino . Having a population of just 3 people, this tiny island is spectacularly beautiful.

I hate to disappoint you but this is also no secret. You, and hundreds of tourists, will be crawling all over the island land, boat and sea to catch a glimpse. As we were exploring around on our boat ride we saw the filming locations of the Count of Monte Cristo and the Popeye movie.

The waters were crystal clear and the caves provided a lovely respite from the blistering heat. Make sure you jump ship to explore and snorkel.

17. Swim in the crystal waters of the Blue Lagoon

Possibly Malta’s most sought-after and famous location is the beautiful azure waters of the Blue Lagoon.

You can hop on a boat tour with a group or privately over to Comino and follow the masses of tourists to find it.

It’s natures beauty at its finest but the 21st century always has a way of making money.

You’ll find food and drink stalls, umbrellas and even ice cream boats floating around trying to drain every last Euro cent.

But, I have to admit, I didn’t mind. There’s room enough for everyone!

Although you can sunbathe on the sidelines, I would make sure that you jump in and enjoy swimming in its crystal clear blue waters. It’s a must.

18. Feel like a princess in Palazzo Parisio in Naxxar

An unexpected but welcome surprise in the small village of Naxxar was the sumptuous Palazzo Parisio . We came upon this by chance after we glimpsed in at their gardens inside. We (almost) snuck in here for a few photos but the manager then invited us in!

I felt like a Maltese princess wandering around the spectacular rooms filled with gold, crystal chandeliers and the beautifully decorated ceilings. I couldn’t believe this used to be someone’s house!

Make sure you stop for a coffee or some lunch in their restaurant or take a stroll in their magical neo-classical gardens. I could have explored them forever!

19. Let your jaw drop at the view from the Dingli Cliffs

The cliffs which lie in the village of Dingli provide spectacular views onto the Mediterranean sea. At 250-metres above sea level it’s Malta’s highest point on the island and a popular sunset spot for tourists and locals alike.

The cliffs are free to visit and you will see some beautiful churches and monuments dotted along the area. There’s not much around the cliff point save a coffee van or two. So, you can simply enjoy the serene views and the breeze.

20. Take an awesome Segway tour

I’ve never managed to get around to doing a Segway tour. Ever since watching Paul Blart Mall Cop, I’ve wanted to try.

It’s a weird sensation as the machine does all the work. So, all you have to do is just move your body and the machine will move with you.

As I drive a car, It was really hard not to think about it too much and attempt to move the handles.

After an hour of a bit of a balancing act, I got used to it and really started to enjoy it! Exploring all the vineyards and forests of Dingli and riding past the Dingli Cliffs was a real treat.

I don’t think I’m expert enough to take a city tour on one but I would definitely ride one again! It’s such a fun thing to do. For more information and bookings contact Segway Malta.

21. Dine in style at Noni Restaurant

I have to admit, I ate in some swanky restaurants in Malta. But, Noni restaurant in Valletta really topped off the bunch for me.

As you descend into their wine cellar style setting, you ‘ll smell the scent of the yummy food cooking from the kitchen on arrival.

From the beautiful atmosphere, the top class service, the high quality menu and the delicious wines – it all made for a spectacular first evening.

I would highly recommend trying their specials like the local fish like Sea Bream. It’s all made fresh to order and packed full of flavour!

Other top picks in Malta for me would be the Rubino’s Confectionary  in Valletta , The Village Kitchen in Naxxarand the Chop House  in Sliema. They were equally as classy and their menus mixed a taste of the traditional and the 21st century.

The most exquisite Lobster at The Village Kitchen.

22. Visit the Popeye Village from the movie

In my personal opinion, I’ve saved the best until last. I relived my childhood by visiting here! You may or may not know that the 1980s movie Popeye was filmed in Malta.

They built a whole movie set to represent the fictional village of Sweethaven on the edge of the sea. After the filming was over, they decided to leave the set behind and convert it into an open-air museum. Nowadays you can take a boat ride and swim nearby, meet Popeye and his friends in the shows and rides, and even get married here!

We didn’t go inside the village itself but the view is extremely photogenic from the viewpoint above! It’s definitely worth a stop and can be found in Anchor Bay near Millieha.

For more information about visiting the Popeye village, see here .

Looking for a place to stay in Malta? Try the St. John’s Boutique Hotel

If you’re looking for a beautiful boutique hotel in the heart of Valletta, The Saint John Malta offered by Jet2holidays is it!

As you walk in, you’ll be welcomed by marvellous air conditioning and sparkling chandeliers. Don’t forget to look up – there are the cutest blue shutters which really add a bit of Maltese tradition to the place.

As this hotel is a recent addition to the AX group, the rooms are spectacularly clean and the facilities are brand new.

I love staying at boutique hotels as they just have so much character. From the tartan bedcovers, the vintage telephone, the leather seats, the old school lamp mixed in with modern amenities and a marble bathroom, you’ll feel right at home here and never want to leave!

You can enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a nightcap in their cheeky monkey restaurant & bar downstairs.

The great thing is that this hotel is in walking distance to all the major attractions of Valletta so grab a map from their front desk and go explore.

The Palace Hotel Malta

The Palace Malta is another ‘adult luxe’ hotel offered by Jet2holidays that is part of the AX group. It’s a huge building located in Sliema with a view of the Mediterranean sea. It’s a designer hotel and from the outside looking in, it is luxurious.

Although the pictures all showrooms with a sea view, I would recommend requesting a room with a view of upgrading as many of the rooms have a view of a joining building and a wall for company.

On the positive side, their infinity pool that looks out onto the ocean was a highlight! I would recommend getting up early for sunrise to have it to yourself. Make sure you order an Aperol Spritz or a cocktail from their rooftop bar.

The breakfast here was also incredible with so many continental options to choose I lost count. They even had prosecco for breakfast! You can’t complain about that.

Save this Malta bucket list for later!

So, the ultimate Malta bucket list has come to an end!

For such a small island country, it really packs a lot in. I didn’t realise the rich history that Malta had to offer nor its spectacular natural beauty.

It definitely won’t be the last time I’ll visit and I would highly recommend it being your next adventure.

What did you want to do the most on the list?! Let me know in the comments.

The Best Things to Do in Malta

Malta may be one of the smallest countries in the world, but it certainly doesn't lack in things to do. The three-island archipelago is located a little over 100 mile south of Sicily in the Mediterranean and includes the islands of Malta, Gozo, and Comino. For such a small area, though, there are a surprising number of historic sites -ranging from megalithic temples said to date back to the 4th millennium B.C. to medieval fortresses and walled cities-and are a major draw for visitors. But activities in Malta are not limited to visiting relics of the past. The Mediterranean nation has natural wonders to explore (both above and below water), festivals to attend, and nightlife to partake in.

From rock climbing and swimming in the Mediterranean to wandering the ancient ruins of various centuries, here are some of the best things to do in Malta.

For getting to know Malta's history and ancient past

1. spend a day exploring the city of valletta and its landmarks.

  • Where : Valletta

Given Malta's strategic location and succession of rulers-from the Romans, Normans, and Sicilians to the Spanish, Knights of St. John, French, and British-it's somewhat surprising to find Valletta so well-preserved. The capital city dates back to the 16th century and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1980. When it was recognized as the European Capital of Culture in 2018, several historic landmarks, such as the city gate at the entrance to Valletta, underwent extensive restoration. When visiting save a day for wandering the city to see such landmarks as:

Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel : At nearly 138 feet high, the dome of the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel looms large on the city skyline. Although the church itself dates back to 1570, it was badly damaged during World War II and only reopened in its current form in 1981 after 23 years of rebuilding.

St. John's Co-Cathedral : The church is named a co-cathedral because the bishop of Malta also sits at St. Paul's Cathedral in Mdina. One of the world's must-visit churches, it features a glittering gold interior that represents the pinnacle of high baroque architecture, plus eight chapels dedicated to the eight branches of the Knights of Malta. History buffs will want to explore the crypt, while art lovers will appreciate the ceiling frescoes by Mattia Preti. Tickets include entrance to the attached museum.

2. Visit the National Museum of Archaeology

Housed in the baroque Auberge de Provence, the National Museum of Archaeology features a collection dating as far back as 5200 B.C., during the Neolithic period. Through such objects as delicate stone tools and Phoenician amulets, it provides a solid introduction to Malta's prehistoric history and adds context to many of the historical sites around the island. It's a perfect starting point for a tour of Valletta, and the small museum is easily be explored in an hour.

3. Upper Barrakka Gardens

One of Valletta's most scenic spots, the Upper Barrakka Gardens has memorable views of the Grand Harbour, the fortified cities of Senglea and Birgu across the harbor, and the shipyards below. Every day at noon, members of the Malta Heritage Society dress in British military uniforms and fire a ceremonial gun [cannon] salute. Visitors can stroll by beautiful fountains, and there is plenty of manicured green space for picnics. Take an elevator which connects the gardens to the Valletta waterfront, or perhaps ride the elevator at dusk to watch the sun setting over the city's rooftops and the Mediterranean.

History buffs won't want to miss the Lascaris War Rooms, a collection of tunnels and chambers 150 feet beneath the Upper Barrakka Gardens, that served as the secret headquarters for Allied operations during World War II. Commanders stationed here oversaw some of the most ambitious campaigns in the Mediterranean, including the 1943 invasion of Sicily. After the war, the War Rooms were used by the Mediterranean fleet of the Royal Navy.

4. Go back in time in the medieval town of Mdina

  • Where : Mdina

Plan to spend at least an afternoon wandering the streets of the walled city of Mdina (also known as the Silent City), which was founded in the 8th century A.D. and served as the nation's capital until medieval times. These days fewer than 100 people live in Mdina, though the walled city remains a popular tourist attraction. After your visit, make a stop at Coogi's Restaurant & Tea Garden for lunch or a quick drink while enjoying views of the surrounding farms on the other side of the city's walls.

Game of Thrones fans will be interested to know that Mdina was one of many filming locations for the series.

5. Tour St. Paul's Catacombs

  • Where : Rabat

Located on the outskirts of Mdina in Rabat, St. Paul's Catacombs are an homage to Paul the apostle. Paul and 274 others were shipwrecked just off Malta around 60 A.D. on their way to Rome . Legend has it that the survivors took refuge in a grotto, above which a church and monument were later built in the apostle's honor. The Catacombs, which represent the earliest evidence of Christianity in Malta, are a labyrinthine set of underground cemeteries. Covering an area of over 21,000 square feet, the catacombs twist and turn with dozens of hypogea (chambers) once used for burials.

6. Explore the Cittadella

  • Where : Victoria, Gozo

The site of the Cittadella on the island of Gozo is thought to have been inhabited since Neolithic time and more certainly by the Bronze Age. The land was used by the Romans for a settlement. The Cittadella is a fortified citadel, which overlooks Gozo's current capital of Victoria.

A walk through the striking limestone structure is a must when visiting Gozo. While wandering the grounds, notice the holy shrines under the Norman-style arches and the doors adorned with a coat of arms. Up on the ramparts, you'll find a 360-degree view of Gozo's hills, valleys, and villages, with the Mediterranean in the distance. There are also various on-site churches and museums to visit, such as the cave-like Gunpowder Magazine, where gunpowder was stored in the late 17th and 18th centuries.

Other nearby historic sites worth a stop in Gozo include the ornate St. George's Basilica , which tops the hill at the heart of Victoria and the baroque Cathedral of the Assumption, enclosed within the walls of the Cittadella.

7. The Ggantija Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

  • Where : Gozo

The Ggantija Temples , named after the Maltese word for "giant," are the oldest and most impressive of the megalithic temples in the Maltese islands. Built during the Neolithic period from coralline limestone, the ruins are more than 5,500 years old, predating Stonehenge-and even the pyramids of Egypt. This UNESCO World Heritage site was recently restored; it is visitor friendly with walkways and a new center featuring displays of prehistoric artifacts from across Gozo.

For experiencing Malta's more current culture, food, and nightlife

8. shop for gifts and snacks on and near merchants street.

Stalls at the busy Merchants Street Market, which is open every morning of the week, sell traditional Maltese crafts alongside bargain clothing, jewelry, and other gifts. Right off Merchants Street is the Is-Suq Tal-Belt Valletta Food Market, an indoor collection of food stalls ideal for sampling Maltese food . Swing by Lot 61 Coffee Roasters across the street from the food market for a cup of some of the best brew in the city.

9. Watch live music at Bridge Bar or Cafe Society

Valletta by day may be all about sightseeing and jostling with crowds of day-trippers from docked cruise ships, but nighttime in the capital city is an entirely different experience. On warm nights in particular, the nightlife spills out from the city's bars and restaurants onto the streets. On these evenings, join the locals lounging on city steps and enjoy a drink and live music at establishments like Bridge Bar or Cafe Society .

10. Attend a festival

  • Where : Nationwide

It's easy to time a visit to Malta with a festival, thanks to a diverse calendar of events . For a more traditional cultural experience, time your trip for " festa season "-a series of extended weekends that runs from the end of May to September-when towns and villages throughout Malta celebrate the feast of their respective patron saints with papier-mâché statues, Maltese delicacies, and fireworks.

However, some of the more standout events worth planning a trip around include Birgu Fest and Notte Bianca , both annual festivals that take place in October. Birgu Fest is a festival in which the entire old city of Vittoriosa, also known as Birgu, turns off all of its lights and illuminates the city's ancient walls and cobblestone streets by candlelight. Notte Bianca, also a nighttime festival, takes place in Valletta but is more focused on music and partying than the romance of candlelight. If you happen to visit in February, grab a costume and head to Nadur, Gozo, for its macabre Carnival celebrations .

For getting out to see Malta's natural beauty

11. take a boat tour to the blue grotto or blue lagoon.

  • Where : Qrendi (Malta) or Comino

No trip to Malta would be complete without an excursion on the Mediterranean, and one of the most enjoyable ways to experience it is with a boat tour. If you're short on time, take a taxi or drive to the coastal town of Qrendi, where you can hop on a quick 30-minute boat tour to the Blue Grotto, an oceanside cave.

If you have at least a day to spare, it's worthwhile to sign up for a longer boat tour to see the Blue Lagoon, located on the uninhabited island of Comino, which is the archipelago's smallest. There are both day and half-day trips to the Blue Lagoon and Comino departing from either Valletta or Gozo.

12. Walk along the Xwejni Salt Pans on Gozo

  • Where : Qbajjar Bay, Gozo

On the northern coast of Gozo, visitors can get a fascinating introduction to one of the island's most important traditions: sea salt production. Just past Qbajjar Bay is a nearly two-mile stretch of 350-year-old salt pans, which remain a vital source of income for Gozitans to this day. In the summer, locals scrape up salt crystals, and store them in nearby caves for later use. Several Gozitan businesses package the salt in gift jars, which are available for purchase in many of the island's souvenir stores.

13. Take a scenic drive on Gozo

Gozo is mostly an agrarian island, so you won't find any big cities here. Instead, focus on exploring the outdoors, and in particular the seaside cliffs and rock formations, scattered about the island. The most famous is the Azure Window, a rock archway that collapsed in 2017 . Even so, visitors still flock to the location to see its remnants. Equally stunning, though less well-known, are Wied il-Għasri a beautiful sea canyon you can hike to and swim in and Wied Il-Mielaħ a (still-standing) natural rock arch perched above the sea, both of which are on the north coast of Gozo.

14. Go for a swim in the Mediterranean

  • Where : Various

You won't find many white, sandy beaches on Malta or its two smaller islands, but that doesn't mean there aren't any great areas for swimming and beach days-quite the opposite. Grab a beach blanket or towel and spread out on the rocks at Paradise Bay, Wied Iż-Żurrieq, or St. Peter's Pool in Malta. If you're on Gozo, head to Xlendi.

If you go to St. Peter's Pool, end your day with a seafood meal in Marsaxlokk at casual eatery Skuna or the slightly more upscale restaurant Tartarun . On Sundays, the town has its weekly fish market. Though often touted as a great tourist attraction in Malta, it's okay to skip unless you're buying fish to cook later.

15. Rock climb its coastal cliffs

Malta's seaside cliffs may not always be great for lounging, but they are excellent for rock climbing. If you'd like to try your hand at this adventurous sport, sign up for a tour with Gozo Adventures in Gozo or MC Adventure in Malta. The guides with both tour companies are very experienced and friendly, and have options suitable for all levels-from total newbies to experienced outdoor climbers.

A group of people exploring Valletta in Malta by a traditional wooden boat. The sea is dark blue and choppy, whils in the background bigger yachts are docked in front of honey-coloured buildings.

How to spend a day in Valletta, Malta's baroque, harbourside city

Plan the perfect day in the Maltese capital, from breakfast pastries to a waterfront dinner.

Built by the Knights of St John in the 16th century, Valletta retains much of its time-worn charm, with narrow streets leading between honey-coloured buildings, and glimpses of the Mediterranean never far from view. It’s a small place – just 0.3 square miles – so all of its attractions are within easy walking distance. Here’s how to make the most of it.

8am: Breakfast at Caffe Cordina

Opened in 1837, this elegant cafe in the heart of the city centre not only serves up traditional Maltese pastizzi   (savoury pastries stuffed with ricotta or peas and beef) and round qassatat   pies, often filled with peas, but also a sublime atmosphere. Expect marbled floors, gold-lined ceilings and elegant chandeliers to backdrop your coffee and cake consumption. If you’re chomping at the bit to get exploring, they also sell some treats to take away.

A picture of an old courtyard statue in Valletta, Malta. Planted flower pots are dotted around, whilst the stone architecture is near-immaculate.

10am: Explore Casa Rocca Piccola

If you visit one museum in Valletta, make it this 16th-century palace — the family home of the ninth Marquis de Piro. A glorious timewarp showcasing artistic treasures both Maltese-made and imported, the series of treasure-cluttered rooms contain everything from a portable altar hidden in a bureau to possibly the last surviving set of medical instruments from the Knights of St John. There are underground tunnels used for shelter during Second World War bombings, too. Tours run every hour and last about 45 minutes.

11am: Water taxi to the Three Cities

Get a prime view of Valletta’s skyline and a nautical adventure at the same time by hopping aboard a dgħajsa   (traditional water taxi) to the historic towns known as the Three Cities, just across the Grand Harbour. Trips departing from water level below the Upper Barrakka Gardens cost just a few euros per person and only take around 15 minutes each way. Alternatively, ask your skipper to give you a personalised boat tour of the harbour.

1pm: Lunch at Café Jubilee

Filled with quirky art pieces — including vintage posters and inverted milk jugs repurposed into pendant lights — this homely family-owned restaurant in the historic core of Valletta specialises in the cuisine of Malta’s neighbouring island, Gozo. Tuck into dishes such as sheep’s cheese ravioli with tomato and basil sauce, rabbit stew with orange, spices and red wine, and baked marrow stuffed with beef. Wash everything down with the local Cisk lager or Maltese craft beers such as Blue Lagoon Witbier.

3pm: Tour the Teatru Manoel

Opened in 1732 by António Manoel de Vilhena, a Grand Master of the Knights of St John, Teatru Manoel is a spectacular example of a surviving baroque theatre. Twice-daily tours, which run at 11am and 3pm on weekdays, cost €5 (£4) and will take you from the stalls up into the wooden boxes where the people-watching opportunities are often as thrilling as what’s shown on stage.

People in an alleyway in Valletta which is populated with bars. Tables line the sides of the steps with people eating and drinking, standing and socialising.

4pm: Valletta Design Cluster

Set on a quiet side street in a building that was once used as a slaughterhouse, the Valletta Design Cluster doesn’t look like much from the outside — but step into the lobby and take the lift to the top floor, and you’ll be welcomed by a verdant surprise. The leafy rooftop garden with seating, tables and a pond provides an elevated perspective of the surrounding city rooftops, and is the perfect outdoor place to sit and relax for an hour among trees, shrubs and fragrant lavender blooms.

5pm: Aperitifs at Kamy Cocktail Bar

Wander around Valletta’s historic centre in the waning light, then pop into this popular cocktail bar. Mixologist Iliyan Iliev combines creative flavours with artistic prowess; try the clarified negroni. Paintings and photographs line the walls and each cocktail comes topped with a recognisable (and drinkable) masterpiece floating on its surface — for example, Munch’s The Scream or Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus.

8pm: Dinner at The Harbour Club

On the south Valletta waterfront facing out to Fort St Angelo and the Three Cities, this elegant dining favourite in an 18th-century building provides impressive views over the Grand Harbour. The menu is inspired by the streets of Valletta, with dishes like Strait Street, starring local pork loin with celeriac and pork gratin, and Old Theatre Street, featuring crab tart and marie rose sauce. Rather unusually in meat-loving Malta, there’s also a seven-course vegan tasting menu.
