15 Best Things to Do in Zabrze (Poland)

Between Katowice and Gliwice, Zabrze is a working city in the Silesian Metropolis. If you love industrial technology you should look no further than the three show mines from when coalmining was peaking in the early 20th century. The pick of these, the Guido Mine, kits you out with mining gear to descend 355 metres beneath the surface to tell you what the life of a miner was all about.

And if that’s not enough there are two more preserved mines here on the Route of Silesian Industrial Monuments. Back at ground level Zabrze has a botanical garden and a museum of coalmining that both deserve a look, while Katowice and Gliwice have their own sights and are only a few minutes on the train.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Zabrze :

1. Zabytkowa Kopalnia Węgla Kamiennego Guido (Guido Mine and Coalmining Museum)

Guido Mine, Zabrze

A mining museum like no other, the Guido Mine beckons you deep underground to tunnels as far as 355 metres beneath the surface.

Down here you’ll be in no doubt what it was like to toil in Zabrze’s mines, wearing a hardhat and lamp, feeling the drafts along the tunnels and seeing signs of tectonic movement in the tunnel walls.

Further up, the tour also takes you to the tunnels at 320 and 170 metres where there’s a timeline of Upper Silesia’s mining activity and you can even get a drink at a subterranean cafe.

Above ground, the gigantic blue headframe is still standing tall at this facility that first started hauling coal to the surface in 1871.

2. Skansen Górniczy Królowa Luiza (Queen Louise Mining Museum)

Skansen Górniczy Królowa Luiza

Named for the Queen of Prussia this mine was in business from 1791 to 1998. Since 1993, even before it shut down, the underground chambers and infrastructure have been opened up to the public.

The tour takes you to a depth of 36 metres and includes a ride on a subterranean train.

At the Carnall Shaft the engine room, switchgear, shower hall and union hall are still intact.

The engine room has a steam-powered winding engine from 1915 with an available 2,000 horsepower, while you can also go to the top of the headframe where there’s an observation platform for a panorama of Zabrze and the Silesian Metropolis.

3. Municipal Botanical Garden

Botanical Garden, Zabrze

Created in 1928, the Municipal Botanical Garden wouldn’t be opened to the public until 1938 because of the Great Depression.

After the war the garden was restored and repeatedly enlarged and is now more than six hectares in size, and has around thousands of specimens of plants, trees and shrubs.

A superb recent addition is the rose garden that has 2,500 individual plants from 65 varieties, bursting into colour in spring and summer.

In the greenhouses are 5,000 plants from climate zones across the planet, including a wealth of palms, ferns and succulents.

And out on the paths are species as diverse as Chinese Amur cork trees, tulip trees and Canadian hemlock.

4. Coalmining Museum

If you’re still curious about the culture and technology of coalmining in Zabrze you could make for the museum that operates the Louisa Mine.

The exhibitions are in a Historicist government building from the 1870s extended in 1906. You can get in touch with coal and mining from a few different angles, studying its geology and palaeobotany, the development of mining technology and the ins and outs of coal processing.

On a more personal level you can hear testimonies from miners, get to know their routines and find out more about mining culture.

5. Dom Muzyki i Tańca (House of Music and Dance)

Dom Muzyki i Tańca

Zabrze’s most recognisable monument is this cavernous performing arts venue that opened in 1959. The House of Music and Dance has the Socialist Realist architecture of the time, with a hexagonal plan and a capacity of more than 2,000. The hall has made a name for its high-quality acoustics, and the likes of José Carreras, Plácido Domingo and Krystian Zimmerman have performed here.

And as you enter, you’ll be treading a path taken by famous dignitaries like Charles de Gaulle and Finnish Prime Minister Urho Kekkonen.

There’s a cafe open seven days a week with outdoor seating, and you can check the venue’s website to see if there’s a live band or classical concert that suits your taste.

6. Muzeum Miejskie (City Museum)

Muzeum Miejskie

To get a sense of place in Zabrze, the City Museum has masses of artefacts mapping the city’s folk culture, art and history.

Some of the most engaging are the many everyday pieces from industrial times like identity cards, diplomas, chequebooks, factory catalogues and photographs.

Also waiting for you are pieces of traditional farming equipment, costumes worn at the turn of the 20th century and the various tools needed for trades like saddling, cobbling, tailoring, weaving and much more.

Look out for the hundreds of sculptures that have been hewn from big hunks of coal, which are peculiar to this part of Poland.

7. Muzeum Techniki Wojskowej (Museum of Military Technology)

Muzeum Techniki Wojskowej, Zabrze

If you’re into military hardware you have to check out this museum where a large cache of weapons and vehicles sit in an open yard.

The amount and variety of exhibits is staggering, and mostly dates from the Second World War and the days of the Polish People’s Army.

There are tanks, armoured cars, armoured personnel carriers, transport trucks, fire trucks, motorcycles, aircraft and anti-aircraft guns.

Almost everything looks like new, and 90% of the vehicles are in working order.

Some of the picks are a Soviet PTS amphibious transport vehicle, a Sukhoi Su-20 fighter jet and Soviet T-34-85 and T-72 tanks.

8. Szyb Maciej (Maciej Shaft)

Szyb Maciej

On the Silesian Route of Industrial Monuments, Szyb Maciej is an industrial site at a shaft of the early 20th-century Concordia mine.

After a period of neglect, new owners have totally revitalised the complex, cleaning up its headframe, engine room, switchgear, steam engine and a host of other mechanisms and buildings.

You can see all these on an hour-long walking tour, and from the headframe you’ll be able to look deep into the mine shaft itself.

There’s an events hall under a metal and glass canopy, a restaurant, bistro, outdoor cafe in summer and a playground for little ones.

9. Jewish Cemetery

Jewish Cemetery, Zabrze

Established in 1874, Zabrze’s Jewish Cemetery has been closed for more than 60 years.

But even after all the events of the 20th century the cemetery has 500 gravestones and monuments, maintained by volunteers.

If you find the brightly-painted gates locked you can get into this two-hectare site around the back.

The cemetery has been reclaimed by nature, with ivy taking over the tombs and wild unkempt trees.

Culturally-speaking it’s an enthralling place: The inclusion of German and Yiddish inscriptions on the headstones speaks to the high degree of integration in Zabrze 100 years ago.

10. Kino Roma

Kino Roma, Zabrze

The slightly dishevelled temple-like building at Ulica Padlewskiego 4 is the oldest cinema in Upper Silesia.

Kino Roma opened as the Kino Lichtspielhaus (Cinematograph) in 1912 and back in the silent movie era even had an orchestra pit.

More than a century later remains a gathering place for movie lovers.

The auditorium can seat 275 and is used for concerts and seminars, while the cinema screens a line-up of international independent movies and recent Hollywood releases.

11. Filharmonia Zabrzańska

Filharmonia Zabrzańska

The philharmonic orchestra was founded in 1950 by the miners’ trade union to spread the popularity of classical music among workers.

Over nearly 70 years some highly regarded conductors and soloists like Krystian Zimerman have performed with them.

In 2010 the philharmonic moved into a new permanent venue at Zabrze’s Neoclassical former library building.

The schedule is busy, with a performance every few days, while the repertoire caters to all tastes, with operas, operettas and symphonies, movie scores and the music of bands like the Beatles.

12. Zamek w Chudowie

Zamek w Chudowie

Not far south in Chudów is a 16th-century castle that has risen from the dead.

From 1874 to the 1990s the monument had been a sad ruin the whole structure save for a wall and a section of the tower burnt down.

The reconstruction project lasted until 2004, completely rebuilding the square tower and its hipped roof, and conducting an archaeological dig at the site.

The artefacts dug up during the excavations are now kept in the tower as a museum, and there’s a cycle of events all year at the castle like a medieval fair in August.

13. Kopiec Wyzwolenia (Mound of Liberation)

Kopiec Wyzwolenia

Driving through the Silesian Metropolis you may catch sight of this man-made hill a few kilometres northeast of Zabrze.

The Mound of Liberation was raised over five years from 1932-1937 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the march of King Jan III Sobieski to the Battle of Vienna in 1683. There, a Christian coalition defeated the armies of the Ottoman Empire with the help of the largest cavalry charge ever seen on a battlefield.

The mound is also a memorial for the Silesian Uprisings, during which Upper Silesia gained independence from Germany after the Second World War.

Modelled on a Bronze Age tumulus, the mound is 20 metres high and as the highest point in Piekary Śląskie gives you long-range vistas from its apex.

14. Katowice

Katowice, Poland

The upside to being in a conurbation like the Silesian Metropolis is that other cities are practically on your doorstep.

Katowice at the centre of the metropolis is hardly ten minutes from Zabrze and has the kind of high-profile attractions you’d want from a regional capital.

One is the new campus of the Silesian Museum, which opened in 2015 and has galleries for art, archaeology, photography and ethnography planted in former mine tunnels.

Also a must is Nikiszowiec, a revitalised miners’ settlement from the start of the 20th century, conserved as a Polish Historic Monument.

The whole neighbourhood was planned in advance, including a school, hospital, churches, shops and a police station.

And those brick apartment buildings have a real artistry to them, featuring arcades, bay windows and grand portals.

15. Gliwice

Rynek, Gliwice

Even closer, Gliwice borders Zabrze to the west and is just one stop on the train.

Unlike a lot of the Silesian Metropolis, Gliwice has a Medieval past, having been granted town rights in 1250. The compact old centre of the city is still in place, and the Rynek (Market Square) in the middle is somewhere to hang out with a cold drink in summer.

Gliwice was also the scene of the famous Gleiwitz Incident on the eve of the Second World War.

The Gliwice Radio Tower, still intact today, was attacked by SS operatives pretending to be Polish Army personnel, to justify the Invasion of Poland that would take place on the following day.

And between Gliwice and Azbrze is Kolejkowo, a detailed model railway and miniature world to capture kids’ imaginations.

Zabrze is a city in the Silesian Voivodeship of southern Poland, part of a metropolis centred on Katowice . It's industrial, with a population of 168,946 in 2021. Its top sight is the Coal Mining Museum, with two facilities where you explore underground.

Understand [ edit ]

Medieval villages in the forests of Silesia mined coal and worked metal, but remained small until the 18th century, when mining and steel-making techniques advanced. In Zabrze the spark for growth came in 1791 with the discovery of coal suitable for coke, which you need for high-temperature steel and glass manufacture. In this era Poland was carved up between other nations and Zabrze was part of Prussia then Germany. When World War I broke out, it was thought politic to rename the town Hindenburg after the leader of the German Imperial Army. After the war Poland was re-established and the cities of Silesia voted on whether to join it; Hindenburg was among those voting to remain in Germany. It joined Poland and reverted to being Zabrze after World War II. Zabrze gained city rights in 1922. It quickly became of the mid-size industrial towns common in the Silesian region.

The post-war communist government promoted traditional smokestack industries, but these and communism collapsed together in the 1980s. This has left a large industrial heritage which today is the most interesting aspect of Zabrze.

Today, it is one of the cities composing the 2.7 million inhabitant conurbation referred to as the Katowice urban area, itself a major centre in the greater Silesian metropolitan area which is populated by just over five million people

NASA-funded pulsed plasma rocket concept aims to send astronauts to Mars in 2 months

An innovative rocket system could revolutionize future deep space missions to Mars, reducing travel time to the Red Planet to just a few months.

The goal of landing humans on Mars has presented a myriad of challenges, including the need to quickly transport large payloads to and from the distant planet, which, depending on the positions of Earth and Mars, would take almost two years for a round trip using current propulsion technology.

The Pulsed Plasma Rocket (PPR), under development by Howe Industries, is a propulsion system designed to be far more efficient than current methods of deep space propulsion, enabling the trip between Earth and the Red Planet to be made in just two months. Specifically, the rocket will have a high specific impulse or Isp, a measure of how efficiently an engine generates thrust. This technology could therefore enable astronauts and cargo to travel to and from Mars more efficiently and rapidly than existing spacecraft, according to a statement from NASA.

Related: How long does it take to get to Mars?

Stemming from the Pulsed Fission Fusion concept, the PPR uses a fission-based nuclear power system, which obtains energy from the controlled splitting of atoms, to generate thrust for spacecraft propulsion. However, the PPR is smaller, simpler and more affordable than previous concepts.

In addition to enabling further range missions, the PPR could support much heavier spacecraft, meaning additional shielding could be installed to reduce a crew's exposure to harmful high-energy particles , called Galactic Cosmic Rays, endured during long-duration spaceflight.

"The PPR enables a whole new era in space exploration," NASA officials said.

"The exceptional performance of the PPR, combining high Isp and high thrust, holds the potential to revolutionize space exploration," the statement reads. "The system's high efficiency allows for manned missions to Mars to be completed within a mere two months."

The PPR concept is now moving into Phase II of the NASA Innovative Advanced Concept (NIAC) study, having completed Phase I, which focused on the neutronics of the propulsion system, designing the spacecraft, power system and necessary subsystems, analyzing the magnetic nozzle capabilities, and determining trajectories and benefits, according to the statement.

During Phase II, developers will build upon the assessments from Phase I to optimize the engine design, perform proof-of-concept experiments and design a spacecraft concept to better protect crewed flights to Mars. Currently visited only by robotic explorers, the PPR could one day bring NASA closer to establishing a permanent base on Mars .

Solar eclipse 2024: A traveller’s guide to the best places to be when the light goes out

O n 8 April 2024, a total solar eclipse will sweep across North America , providing an astronomical experience in many alluring locations.

Only a tiny proportion of humanity has ever witnessed a total eclipse – but tens of millions of people will be able to experience one as the “path of totality” sweeps from the Pacific to the Atlantic during the course of that magical Monday.

Here’s what you need to know about why you should see it and where to be.

What happens during a total solar eclipse?

The greatest show on earth comes courtesy of the lifeless moon. Normally the orbiting lunar lump merely provides earth with tides, moonlight and somewhere to aim space rockets. But roughly once a year the natural satellite aligns with the sun and, thanks to a geometric miracle, blots out the hub of the solar system to create a total eclipse.

“Even though the moon is 400 times smaller than the sun, it’s also about 400 times closer to earth than the sun is,” says Nasa. “This means that from earth, the moon and the sun appear to be roughly the same size in the sky.”

A narrow band marking the “path of totality” carves an arc of darkness across the surface of our planet. If you are somewhere on that line at the predicted time, and you have clear skies, then the experience will become a lifelong memory.

The closer you are to the centre of the path of totality, the longer the total eclipse will last. The astronomer Dr John Mason, who has guided dozens of eclipse trips (and will be doing so again in 2024), says: “People down in southwest Texas will get about four minutes 20 seconds, and that reduces to about three minutes 20 seconds up in the northeast. That’s a pretty good, long total eclipse.”

What’s so good about seeing an eclipse?

In the days leading up to the eclipse, locations in the path of totality acquire something of a carnival atmosphere as astronomical tourists converge in excited anticipation.

On the day, the cosmological performance begins with a warm-up lasting more than an hour, during which the moon steadily nibbles away at the surface of the sun.

Suddenly, you experience totality. The stars and planets appear in the middle of the day. The air chills.

To testify to the heavenly fit between our two most familiar heavenly bodies, faint diamonds known as Baily’s beads peek out from behind the moon. They actually comprise light from the sun slipping through lunar valleys.

A sight to behold – so long as you can see the moon blotting out the sun and appreciate the mathematical perfection of nature in our corner of the galaxy.

Eclipses are entirely predictable: we know the stripes that the next few dozen will paint upon the surface of the Earth. But the weather is not. Cloud cover, which blighted the Cornwall eclipse in 1999, downgrades a cosmological marvel to an eerie daytime gloom.

Almost as predictable as the eclipse is that traffic towards the path of totality will be heavy on the morning of 8 April 2024.

Accommodation rates are astronomical: even humdrum motel rooms in Niagara, central in the path of totality, are selling for C$600 (£350) for the night of 7-8 April 2024.

Where will the great American eclipse 2024 be visible?

The path of totality makes landfall from the Pacific at Mazatlan on Mexico’s Pacific Coast and sweeps northeastwards to reach the US-Mexican border at Piedras Negras.

In the US, three big Texan cities – San Antonio, Austin and Dallas – are on the extremes of the path of totality; many citizens are likely to drive to locations near the centre of the line.

Arkansas will be an attractive place to see the eclipse , with both Texarkana (on the border with Texas) and Little Rock within the path of totality.

In the Midwest, Indianapolis and Cleveland share the distinction of being fairly central in the path of totality. In upstate New York, Buffalo and nearby Niagara Falls (shared with Canada) could be extremely attractive – though prone in early April to cloudy skies.

In Canada , Montreal is just touched by the path of totality. The line then reverts to the US, passing across northern Maine – which promises to be a superb with clear skies. Then back to Canada’s Maritime Provinces, with New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland all in the line of darkness.

Will I be able to see a partial eclipse from the UK?

Yes. The eclipse ends with the sunset in the eastern Atlantic, about 600 miles off the coast of Cornwall , before it reaches the UK and Ireland . But on the island of Ireland and western parts of Great Britain, a partial eclipse may be visible with the sun low in the sky.

If skies are clear and you have an open view to the west, it will start at around 7.55pm in Cardiff, Liverpool , Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

BBC Weather presenter Simon King said: “With the partial solar eclipse occurring late in the day UK time, the Sun will be low to the horizon and will actually set before the spectacle is over.”

Can I combine an exciting city with a partial eclipse?

Boston, New York and Chicago are among the big cities that will see a sizeable chunk of the sun blotted out. Viewer as far apart as Alaska and the far north of Colombia and the Caribbean will, if skies are clear and they use the correct eye protection, see a partial eclipse. But there is nothing to compare with a total eclipse.

Eclipse guru Dr Mason sums up the difference between a 99 per cent partial eclipse and a total eclipse as far apart as “a peck on the cheek and a night of passion”.

“There will be people who will look at the map and say, ‘I live in Cincinnati or I live in Columbus [Ohio] and I’m just outside the zone of totality. But I’m going to get a 99 per cent-plus eclipse, so maybe I won’t bother to travel’.

“What they don’t realise is there an enormous difference between 99 per cent and 100 per cent. And there’s a range of phenomena that they won’t see if they put up with 99 per cent.”

You must use special eclipse safety glasses or viewers when viewing a partial eclipse or during the partial phases of a total solar eclipse.

Where should I be for the total experience?

There are no guarantees of clear skies: all you can do is play the odds based on the record of cloud cover for the corresponding date in previous years.

Dr Mason says the average expected cloud cover amounts increase from around 40-45 per cent on the Mexico/Texas border to over 80 per cent in Maine, New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

Three particularly tempting locations:

  • Southern Texas , close to San Antonio or Austin. Besides clear skies being more likely than not, access is easy with direct flights to Austin. Importantly there is much to explore in the region before and after the eclipse, from Big Bend National Park on the Rio Grande to Space Center Houston – an excellent place to continue the cosmological theme.
  • Northern Arkansas , a picturesque part of the state, with the added attraction of Memphis just a couple of hours away.
  • Niagara Falls : the dramatic border between the US and Canada could be an eclipse washout due to clouds. But the natural surroundings are impeccable – and there is plenty of accommodation, which will avoid the risk of being caught in severe traffic congestion on the freeways from Toronto and locations in New York State.

However, the most recent forecasts for cloud cover suggest that the Midwest around Indianapolis and the northeastern state of Maine could have the best prospects.

When are the next total solar eclipses?

Summer 2026 – Wednesday 12 August, to be precise – should bring a spectacular eclipse visible in northern Spain at the height of the European holiday season. The path of totality begins in the Arctic and crosses Greenland and Iceland before arriving in the northern half of Spain. The stripe of darkness will traverse the great cities of Bilbao, Zaragoza and Valencia in mainland Spain before arriving in Palma de Mallorca.

The following summer (2 August 2027), the southern tip of mainland Spain is in the path of totality for an eclipse that will sweep across North Africa and the Arabian peninsula : going east from the Strait of Gibraltar, it will encompass Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, the northeasternmost corner of Sudan, Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

Just under 12 months later, on 22 July 2028, Outback Australia will be the place to be. A total eclipse will make landfall in northern Western Australia, sweep across the Northern Territory and part of southwest Queensland – then clean across New South Wales, with Sydney in the middle of the path of totality.

Winter cloud cover could disrupt the experience in Australia’s largest city – and is very likely in the southern portion of New Zealand’s South Island where the eclipse reaches a finale.

Australia also features in the cosmological plans on 25 November 2030. This is early summer in the southern hemisphere, and likely to be good conditions for viewing in Namibia, Botswana and South Africa (Durban is on the path of totality) as well as South Australia.
