Route 90 into Ocean City will be closed for four nights, starting Monday. What to know.

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will perform nighttime pavement patching work on Route 90, the Ocean City Expressway, between Route 50 and 528, beginning Monday.

How work will impact Route 90 into Ocean City

This work will necessitate the closure and detour of both directions of Route 90. All work should be completed by 5 a.m. Thursday, May 23, weather permitting. To minimize impacts on traffic, crews will work overnight, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., Monday through Thursday.

The travel lanes on Route 90 will be open during the day when work is not taking place. During the work hours, Route 90 will be completely shut down, with the following posted detours in place:

  • From Route 50 East – continue on eastbound Route 50 to Route 378 (Baltimore Avenue) to northbound Route 528 (Philadelphia Avenue/Coastal Highway)
  • From 62nd Street at Route 528 – continue to westbound Route 50.

Traffic and construction updates - I-495/I-90 interchange improvements

Project construction continues on the I-495/I-90 Improvements project. The following activities are underway:

Fruit Street Bridge:

  • Phase 1 of the construction of the Fruit Street Bridge is scheduled to be complete in the Spring of 2024. From there, the team will begin traffic relocation work following the completion of utility work being undertaken by third parties. Following the implementation of traffic relocation, Phase 2 of the Fruit Street Bridge construction process will continue.

I-495 Construction:

  • The construction of the new median bridge on I-495 is schedule to be completed in Summer 2024. Looking ahead, I-495 southbound traffic will be relocated to a temporary median crossover during Summer 2024 to enable the project team to commence construction activities on I-495, including shoulder work on I-495 southbound.
  • The project team has completed the installation of a temporary trestle structure at ramp WN while foundation work at the ramp is ongoing. Looking ahead, substructure work is scheduled to begin during Spring 2024 and requisite steel erection work is scheduled to begin in Autumn 2024.

I-90 Construction:

  • The project team is scheduled to begin bridge construction at Whitehall Brook along the eastbound shoulder imminently. Additionally, the team is continuing to work on the I-90 bridge over MBTA/CSX/Amtrak rail tracks and is continuing to widen the eastbound shoulder. Work on the westbound off ramp (ramp WS) is expected to continue, while requisite steel erection work is schedule to begin in Autumn 2024.

Old Toll Plaza:

  • The project team is continuing to work on ramp ES at the old toll plaza while the team is scheduled to complete the installation of the culvert and retaining wall in Spring 2024. The team will continue the installation of the barrier and road box throughout Summer 2024 and a new ramp (I-90 eastbound to I-495 southbound) is scheduled to open in Summer 2024.
  • The project team will commence the construction of a retaining wall during Spring 2024 and the installation of the barrier and road box will continue throughout Summer 2024.

Construction activities are weather dependent and subject to change without notice.

Traffic and Staging Considerations

The project will involve complete replacement of the interchange. To avoid traffic impacts, the project will:

  • Maintain 3 lanes on mainlines, except for short-term closures during approved off-peak hours
  • Maintain all ramp connections between I-90 and I-495, including along temporary alignments
  • Maintain proper signage and markings
  • Provide temporary roadway lighting along ramps for safe nighttime travel
  • Provision of safe construction access/egress
  • Maintain resident and local business access/egress

Occupants of crashed car abandon vehicle on eastbound I-90, causing major traffic backup

A single-vehicle crash caused a lengthy traffic jam after occupants of the disabled car abandoned the vehicle Friday night on eastbound Interstate 90 in Spokane.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Cole Jackson said the car blocked the left and center lanes, and traffic was able to pass by in the right lane.

The PulsePoint app indicated the crash happened at about 8 p.m. near Freya Street.

Officers could be seen parked in patrol cars on nearby streets with their lights flashing as the search for the occupants continued.

No additional details were immediately available.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — A vehicle fire caused large traffic delays Thursday on the New York State Thruway.

Authorities say a tire on one of the vehicles in an Army Reserve convoy caught fire while heading east on I-90 at milepost 402.3.

State police blocked the right lane between exits 49 and 48A while crews worked to clean up the scene.

The 91 Freeway in Orange County has reopened after a deadly SWAT standoff caused it to shut down, snarling traffic in both directions for hours.

The standoff in the Anaheim Hills area began after an armed driver involved in a police pursuit that began in Corona stopped on the freeway. Details about what led to the chase were not available.

The freeway was closed on both sides at Imperial Highway and Lakeview Avenue.

Armored SWAT vehicles responded to the scene, where the blue sedan was stopped in a middle lane. The car, with what appeared to be a hole in a rear driver's side window, was sandwiched between the two armored police vehicles.

The standoff ended at about noon when authorities pulled the motionless driver from the car. He died at the scene. Details about a cause of death were not immediately available.
