Islamic Dream Interpretation: Good Visions, Bad Dreams, And Hadiths

islamic-dream-interpretation

In Islam, dreams are considered to be a kind of spiritual perception. The Quran refers to dreams as Ru’yaa (vision), Manam (sleep), Hulum (dream) and Bushra (tidings). And, dream interpretation, also known as oneiromancy, is described using the Arabic terms ‘Tafsir’ or ‘Tabir’ amongst Muslims. Many Islamic dream interpretation theories and observations have been proposed by various Muslim thinkers and philosophers over the past 1500 years. Several of these observations and understandings correspond with the recent theories proposed by modern psychologists.

How to interpret dreams in Islam?

Ibn Sirin, the most popular dream interpreter in the history of Islam, devised a system for dream interpretation based on the fact that both Hadith and the Qur’an teach Muslims to respect the psychological and spiritual importance of the dream experience. According to Ibn Sirin, the interpretation of a dream depends entirely on the life circumstances and personal characteristics of the dreamer along with the meaning of the dream. Besides, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “There are three types of dreams: a righteous dream which is glad tidings from Allah, the dream which causes sadness is from Shaitan and a dream from the ramblings of the mind.”

Islamic Dream Meaning

According to Sunnah, dreams are divided into three categories:

1. Good visions (Ru’yaa)

These constitute true or good dreams, which are believed to be from Allah. Those who spend their life truthfully are more likely to have true dreams. Also, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised that those who have good dreams should share them with only those who they like and trust.

2. Bad dreams (Hulum)

Bad dreams are believed to be from Shaitan. Anyone who sees a disturbing or unpleasant dream is advised to spit thrice on the left side immediately after waking up to seek Allah’s protection against the accursed devil. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also advised offering prayer if anyone ever has a bad dream and never disclose it to anyone.

3. Islamic dream interpretation of fire

Dreaming about lighting a fire and seeing others being led by its light suggests that the individual who lit the fire will eventually become a source of illumination for others via knowledge and wisdom. Worshipping the fire in a dream also connotes a desire to serve a ruler or monarch, as well as the possibility of erring. If the fire that is being worshipped is not lit in the dream, it indicates that the person is looking for illegal sources of gain.

4. Islamic dream interpretation of sea

The ocean or sea represents a huge realm and a strong dynasty as long as there is no evidence of mud, silt, or ominous waves. In a dream, if the person sees himself swallowing the entire sea, and only the king can see him, it foretells that he will rule and have a long life. If one dreams of drinking from it to satiate their thirst, this portends wealth, power, and long life. If he fills a pitcher with its water in a dream, it portends fortune, or Allah will give him a generous present that includes wealth and high status. His reputation, nevertheless, will last longer than his wealth.

5. Islamic dream interpretation of snow

In a dream, snow, and fire that are next to one other, stand in for love, passion, and connection. Snow in a dream might represent money or a medical breakthrough. If snow is present throughout its season, it represents wiping away troubles and revealing rivals or jealous friends. If one sees snow in their dream during a season other than winter, it might represent pain, profanity, or hurdles impeding their journey objectives. It could also represent disease or paralysis.

6. Dreams from one’s self

One’s thoughts are the source of dreams and they do not come from either Allah or Shaitan.

There are certain things that should be kept in mind by the Muslims attempting to interpret a dream. Following are some rules of Islamic dream interpretation:

  • It is advisable to avoid mentioning a dream for interpretation to anyone other than a scholar or a person you trust to be truthful and sincere.
  • Anyone who sees the Prophet in a dream has undoubtedly had a true dream as it is impossible for Satan to imitate the shape of the Prophet.
  • If a person sees the same dream multiple times or multiple people see the same dream, then it is a sign of truth and the dream is a true vision.
  • According to Islam, a dream that comes from Allah as a glad tiding usually takes a long while to occur. On the other hand, a warning from Allah occurs swiftly.
  • True dreams are usually short and concise. If a person has a long dream that seems endless or if someone sees a dream in which he/she is being chased without end, then it most likely means that the dream is meaningless.
  • Islamic dream interpretation is presumptive and not certain. It is possible that a dream is interpreted one way while reality plays out quite differently. So, it is advisable not to make major life decisions based entirely on the interpretation of a dream.
  • The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has prohibited anyone from adding something to or subtracting anything from a dream while relating it for interpretation. Doing this can spoil or corrupt a dream and is considered a great sin.
  • The same symbol occurring in a dream can have different meanings for different people as per Islamic dream interpretation.

Islamic Dream Interpretation Hadiths

allah-dream-quote

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Indeed the worst of lies is that of a person who falsely claims to have dream.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)

The Prophet also said, “Whoever claims to have dream which he did not have, will be ordered to tie two barley grains together, which he will never be able to do; and if somebody eavesdrop on some people’s conversation which they didn’t want him to hear or they tried to keep away from him, then molten lead will be poured into his ears on the Day of Resurrection; and whosoever makes a picture (of a being with a soul) will be punished on the Day of Resurrection and (will) be ordered to put a soul in it, which he will not be able to do.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)

Narrated Anas bin Malik, Allah’s Messenger said, “A good dream (that comes true) of a righteous man is one of forty-six parts of prophet hood.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)

Narrated Anas, the Prophet said, “Whoever has seen me in a dream, then no doubt, he has seen me, for Satan cannot imitate my shape.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)

Narrated Abu Sa‘id Al-Khudri, The Prophet said, “If anyone of you sees a dream that he likes, then it is from Allah, and he should thank Allah for it and narrate it to others; but if he sees something else, i.e., a dream that he dislikes, then it is from Satan, and he should seek refuge with Allah from its evil, and he should not mention it to anybody, for it will not harm him.” (Sahih Muslim)

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Those of you with the truest dreams will be those who are most truthful in speech.” (Sahih Muslim).

Also, the Quran mentions the following incident about dreams and their interpretations:

When Yûsuf said to his father: “O my father! Verily, I saw eleven stars and the sun and the moon, I saw them prostrating themselves to me.” He said: “O my son! Relate not your vision to your brothers, lest they arrange a plot against you. Verily! Shaitân is to man an open enemy!” (Surat al-Yusuf, ayatyn 4-5)

Clearly, the scholars, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), as well as the Quran highlight that some dreams have meanings and symbols. However, interpreting dreams is a tricky business and is not always accurate. Therefore, dream interpretation must be treated with caution.

Islamic Dream Interpretations FAQs

Are all the dreams seen by believers truthful.

All the dreams seen by the Prophets are truthful however, sometimes they may need interpretation. The majority of the dreams seen by the righteous people are truthful as Shaitan’s control on them is quite weak. Most of the dreams seen by other people are usually not true as Shaitan has stronger control over them.

How can meaningless dreams be differentiated from true dreams (Ruyaa) and bad dreams (Hulum)?

The best way to distinguish meaningless dreams from true or bad dreams is by focussing on the feeling one has. True dreams are accompanied by a feeling that they were inspired by Allah. The bad dreams are usually frightening or troubling. However, the meaningless dreams are not accompanied by any significant spiritual feeling.

Can all dreams of a person about himself/herself?

No. Many a times a dream is related to someone else’s life.

Does the Quran mention anything about dreams?

Yes, the holy Quran does mention about dreams. In one specific mention, it narrates a conversation between Yusuf and his father about a dream of the stars, the sun, and the moon.

Significance of dreams in Islam

Types of dreams in islam.

  • Dreams of the Prophets

What you should do to have true dreams

Types of dreams according to ibn hajar, types of mixed up false dreams, what you should do if you experience good dreams, what you should do if you experience bad dreams, dream interpretation.

Praise be to Allah.

1- True dreams are a part of prophethood, as it was reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “True dreams are one of the forty-six parts of prophethood.” (al-Bukhari, 6472; Muslim, 4201)

2- Dreams marked the onset of Revelation. (Al-Bukhari, 3; Muslim, 231)

3- The truthfulness of the dream is related to the sincerity of the dreamer. Those who have the most truthful dreams are those who are the most truthful in speech. (Muslim, 4200)

4- Towards the end of time, hardly any dreams will be untrue. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “That will be because the prophethood and its effects will be so far away in time, so the believers will be given some compensation in the form of dreams which will bring them some good news or will help them to be patient and steadfast in their faith.” (al-Bukhari, 6499; Muslim, 4200)

The same may be said of the miracles which appeared after the time of the Sahabah. This did not happen during their time because they did not need them, due to their strong faith, but the people who came after them needed them (the miracles) because their faith was weak.

5- Dreams are of three types : Rahmani (those that come from Allah), nafsani (psychological, they come from within a person) and shaytani (those that come from the Shaytan). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Dreams are of three types: a dream from Allah, a dream which causes distress and which comes from the Shaytan, and a dream which comes from what a person thinks about when he is awake, and he sees it when he is asleep.” (al-Bukhari, 6499; Muslim, 4200)

Dreams of the Prophets

6- The dreams of the Prophets are wahy (revelation) for they are protected from the Shaytan. The Ummah is agreed upon this. This is why Ibrahim set out to fulfill the command of Allah to sacrifice his son Isma’il when he saw that in a dream; may peace be upon them both.

7- The dreams of people other than the prophets are to be examined in the light of the clear Wahy [i.e., the Quran and Sunnah]. If they are in accordance with the Quran and Sunnah, all well and good; otherwise, they should not be acted upon. This is a very serious matter indeed, for many of the innovators among the Sufis and others have gone astray because of this.

8- Whoever wants to have true dreams should strive to speak honestly, eat halal food, adhere to the commandments of shari’ah, avoid that which Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) have forbidden, sleep in a state of complete purity facing the Qiblah, and remember Allah until he feels his eyelids drooping. If he does all this, then his dreams can hardly be untrue.

9- The most truthful of dreams are those that are seen at the time of suhoor [just before dawn], for this is the time when Allaah descends and when mercy and forgiveness are close. It is also the time when the devils are quiet, unlike the time of darkness just after sunset, when the devils and devilish souls spread out. (See Madaarij al-Saalikeen , 1/50-52)

Al-Hafiz ibn Hajar said:

10- All dreams are either of two types:

1- True dreams: These are the dreams of the prophets and of the righteous people who follow them. They may also happen to other people, but this is very rare, such as the dream of the kafir king which was interpreted for him by Yusuf (peace be upon him). True dreams are those which come true in real life as they were seen in the dream.

2- Mixed up false dreams, which warn of something. These are of different types:

1- Games of the Shaytan to make a person distressed, such as when he sees his head cut off and he is following it, or he sees himself falling into a crisis and cannot find anyone to save him from it, and so on.

2- When he sees some of the angels telling him to do something forbidden, or other things that cannot possibly make sense.

3- When he sees something that happens to him in real life, or he wishes it would happen, and he sees it very realistically in his dream; or he sees what usually happens to him when he is awake or what reflects his mood. These dreams usually speak of the future or the present, rarely of the past. (See Fath al-Bari, 12/352-354)

11- Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “If any one of you sees a dream that he likes, this is from Allah, so let him praise Allah for it and talk about it to others. If he sees other than that, a dream that he dislikes, this is from the Shaytan, so let him seek refuge with Allah from its evil and not mention it to anyone, for it will not harm him.”

(Narrated by al-Bukhari, 6584, and Muslim, 5862).

Abu Qatadah said: the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Good dreams come from Allah, and (bad) dreams come from Shaytan. Whoever sees something that he dislikes, let him spit to his left three times and seek refuge with Allah from the Shaytan, for it will not harm him.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 6594, and Muslim, 5862). The “spitting” referred to here is a soft, dry spitting with no saliva ejected.

It was reported from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Alaah be upon him) said: “If any one of you sees a dream that he dislikes, let him spit to his left three times, and seek refuge with Allah from the Shaytan three times, and turn over from the side on which he was sleeping.” (Narrated by Muslim, 5864)

Ibn Hajar said: to sum up what has been said about good dreams, we may say three things:

  • A person should praise Allah for the good dream
  • He should feel happy about it
  • He should talk about it to those whom he loves but not to those whom he dislikes.

To sum up what has been said about bad dreams , we may say four things:

  • He should seek refuge with Allah from the evil of the dream
  • He should seek refuge with Allah from the evil of the Shaytan
  • He should spit to his left three times when he wakes up
  • He should not mention it to anyone at all.
  • In al-Bukhari, Bab al-Qayd fi’l-Manam, a fifth thing was narrated from Abu Hurayrah, which is to pray. The wording of the report is: whoever sees something he dislikes (in a dream) should not tell anyone about it; rather he should get up and pray. This was reported as a Mawsul report by Imam Muslim in his Sahih.
  • Muslim added a sixth thing, which is to turn over from the side on which one was lying.

In conclusion, there are six things to do, the four mentioned above, plus praying two rak’ahs, for example, and turning over from the side on which one was lying to lie on one’s back, for example. (See Fath al-Bari, 12/370)

12- According to a hadith narrated from Abu Razin by al-Tirmidhi, he should not tell anybody about bad dreams except a very close friend who loves him very much, or who is very wise. According to another report, he should not talk about it except to one who is wise or one who is dear to him. According to another report, he should not tell of his dream except to a scholar or one who will give sincere advice. Al-Qadi Abu Bakr ibn al-‘Arabi said: as for the scholar, he will interpret it in a good way for him as much as he can, and the one who will give him sincere advice will teach him something that will be of benefit to him and will help him to do that. The one who is wise is the one who knows how to interpret it and will tell him only that which will help him, otherwise he will keep quiet. The one who is dear, if he knows something good he will say it, and if he does not know or he is in doubt, he will keep quiet. (See Fath al-Bari, 12/369)

13- Imam al-Baghawi said:

“Know that the interpretation of dreams falls into various categories. Dreams may be interpreted in the light of the Quran or in the light of the Sunnah, or by means of the proverbs that are current among people, or by names and metaphors, or in terms of opposites.” (Sharh al-Sunnah, 12/220)

He gave examples of this, such as:

1- Interpretation in the light of the Quran: such as a rope meaning a covenant, because Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allah…” [Al 'Imran 3:103]

2- Interpretation in the light of the Sunnah: such as the crow representing an immoral man (fasiq), because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called it such.

3- Interpretation by means of proverbs: such as digging a hole meaning a plot, because people say “Whoever digs a hole will fall in it.”

4- Interpretation by means of names: such as seeing a man called Rashid meaning wisdom.

5- Interpretation by means of opposites : such as fear meaning safety, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And He will surely give them in exchange a safe security after their fear” [al-Nur 24:55]

14- As for the book “Interpretation of Dreams” that is attributed to Ibn Sirin, many researchers doubt that it can be attributed to him at all, so we cannot be certain that this book was written by this prominent scholar.

And Allah knows best.

For many Muslims, dreams can be a source of prophecy or offer divine gifts to the person who has them. They can also serve as warnings. But how a dream is interpreted also depends on the dreamer's character and the context in which they live. Read on to learn more about how dreams are interpreted in the Islamic faith and why it's important to seek out a scholar to interpret your dreams for you rather than trying to do it on your own.

Things You Should Know

  • In Islam, there are 3 types of dreams: true dreams (Ru’yaa) that are messages from God, bad dreams (Hulum) that come from the devil, and dreams that come from your own mind.
  • Dreams can be interpreted in light of the Quran or Sunnah or by means of proverbs, names, metaphors, or opposites.
  • Seek guidance from Allah before you engage in dream interpretation. It's best to have a scholar or person you love and trust interpret your dreams.

Step 1 True or good dreams

  • True or good dreams can either be blessings or warnings. A blessing typically takes a long time to happen in waking life but a warning often comes swiftly unless the dreamer does what they were told to do in the dream.
  • Within the Islamic faith, recurring dreams are more likely to be true dreams than dreams that only occur once.
  • If you have a true or good dream, the Prophet has instructed that you should share this dream with everyone you love so that they might be blessed by the dream as well.

Step 2 Bad dreams

  • Spit three times on your left side immediately after you wake up to seek protection from Allah.
  • Pray to Allah for protection.
  • Sleep on your other side.
  • Don't tell anyone about your dream.

Step 3 Dreams from your own mind

  • For example, if you watched a movie shortly before you went to bed, and characters from that movie appeared in your dream, that was most likely a dream from your own mind.
  • Dreams in this category can also come from overeating, sickness, or mental health conditions. [5] X Research source
  • Distinguishing between a dream made up in the dreamer's own mind and one that's divinely inspired often requires expert analysis.

Step 1 In light of the Quran

  • Specific aspects of dream interpretation are mentioned in the Quran, as well as sleep habits that can make it more likely that you'll have true or good dreams.

Step 2 In light of the Sunnah

  • For example, if you went to bed early and woke early in the morning, performing an ablution before going to bed and then lying on your right side, your dream would be more likely to be interpreted as a true dream or revelation.

Step 3 By means of proverbs

  • For example, there is an Arabic proverb that cautions you to "stretch your legs as far as your blanket extends," which means to avoid living beyond your means. If you had a dream that you couldn't get a blanket to cover your cold feet, it might be interpreted using this proverb to mean that you are trying to live beyond your means.

Step 4 By means of names and metaphors

  • A dream that mentions someone that you've recently interacted with in waking life, scholars would more likely interpret that as a dream from your own mind rather than a dream from God or the devil.
  • Islamic thinkers have published manuals from as far back as 750 CE that provide explanations of particular symbols and imagery in dreams. [10] X Research source
  • Sufi thinkers, in particular, see dreams as a portal into a symbolic world.

Step 1 Pray for guidance before seeking interpretation of a dream.

  • You can also pray for protection from the devil if you have a bad dream, although you typically don't want to seek further interpretation of that dream. The less you think about it, the better.

Step 2 Seek interpretation only from scholars or people you trust.

  • A scholar will tell you only the parts of their interpretation that they think would be helpful to you. If they analyze the dream and don't get anything out of it that they think would be helpful to you, don't expect them to share their interpretation.
  • Scholars as well as people you trust try to interpret a dream in the best possible light.

Step 3 Tell the whole dream when relating it for interpretation.

  • Generally, it's important to be honest about your dream so that the interpreter will be able to make the most accurate interpretation of the dream.
  • Even if you think something isn't important, it might be significant for the purposes of interpretation. For example, it might matter if the bird you saw was white or black.

Step 4 Categorize the dream before interpreting it.

  • Dreams that happen in the early morning hours are more likely to be true or prophetic.
  • Dreams that occur during the first few hours of sleep typically have little to no prophetic value.
  • Dreams that concern recent people or events most likely come from your own mind and don't have any prophetic significance.
  • Dreams that are short, clear, and concise are more likely to be true dreams.
  • Dreams in which you see the Prophet are always true dreams.
  • Dreams that seem long, confusing, and pointless are often bad dreams.

Step 5 Take the context of the dream into account.

  • For example, if you had a beloved dog as a kid and you dream of a dog, your dream could be related to the joyful times you spent with your pet. But if you were recently bitten by a dog, the dream could be related to that. [17] X Research source
  • A scholar interpreting your dream will likely ask you questions to better understand the significance of parts of your dream to you and whether they reflect actual circumstances in your life.

Step 6 Take the character of the dreamer into account.

  • Someone who knows you well can likely give a more nuanced interpretation of your dream than someone who doesn't because they have better insight into your character.

Step 1 Dreams are a part of prophethood.

  • Prophets can use dreams both to predict the future and to provide warnings of things that will likely happen unless the people involved take specific actions.
  • For example, a true dream might tell a prophet that a man will come to financial ruin unless he stops doing business with another man. Later, the other man is arrested for fraud, but the first man doesn't lose his fortune because he did as instructed.

Step 2 Dreams of prophets are considered revelation.

  • Recurring dreams are considered more likely to be revelations than dreams that only occur once.
  • Islam itself emerged as a religion when the Prophet began receiving revelations. [21] X Trustworthy Source PubMed Central Journal archive from the U.S. National Institutes of Health Go to source

Step 3 Dreams can offer divine inspiration and guidance.

  • Dreams might also speak to entire communities. However, the Quran warns against creating laws based on divine guidance from a true dream.

Step 4 Dreams can predict the future.

  • For example, if you want to be a parent, you might pray for a child and then have a dream that you are holding your child in your arms. That dream could be interpreted as predicting that you'll have a child.

Step 5 Dreams can offer comfort and strength to believers.

  • Some scholars consider it a part of Islam's egalitarianism that any believer can have a true or even prophetic dream, not just those who have been identified as prophets. [25] X Research source

Step 6 Sleep is a sign of God's wisdom and power.

  • Some interpret things that happen in dreams as being things that happen to your soul, rather than things that happen to you physically. These require a spiritual rather than a literal interpretation.

Interpreting Dreams in Islam: A Guide to Understanding Their Meanings and Significance

Interpreting Dreams in Islam: A Guide to Understanding Their Meanings and Significance

Islamic Dream Interpretation Principles

Role of Dreams in Islam

Dreams hold a significant place in Islamic tradition and are considered a means of divine communication. Muslims believe that dreams can be a source of Allah’s inspiration, guidance, and revelation. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself had many dreams that were later fulfilled, and he encouraged his followers to pay attention to their dreams.

Types of Dreams in Islamic Tradition

Islamic tradition divides dreams into three categories: true, false, and those that come from one’s thoughts. Accurate plans are believed to be a direct communication from Allah, while false dreams are supposed to come from Satan. Dreams that come from one’s thoughts reflect one’s subconscious.

Guidelines for Interpreting Dreams

Interpreting dreams in Islam requires adherence to specific guidelines to ensure accurate understanding and avoid misinterpretation. Seeking interpretation from knowledgeable individuals is one such guideline. Consulting scholars or individuals well-versed in Islamic teachings helps ensure the proper performance of dreams, drawing on their knowledge and experience.

Another guideline is to interpret dreams in light of the Quran and Hadith. The Islamic Quotes 1 states that “dreams can take on different meanings depending on what’s added or taken away.” For example, if one hears themselves crying in a dream, it’s a sign of disaster, but if one sees themselves crying in a dream, it means they’re happy.

Overall, Islamic dream interpretation is an essential aspect of spiritual practice in Islam. Through careful interpretation and reflection, Muslims can better understand their dreams and connection to Allah.

Historical Context of Dream Interpretation

v2 3rupb ittul

Dream interpretation has been an essential part of Islamic tradition since the time of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and continues to be practiced by Muslims worldwide. In Islam, dreams are believed to be a means through which Almighty Allah communicates with His servants. Muslims are encouraged to seek refuge from the devil before sleeping and to share their dreams with trusted people for interpretation.

Prophetic Dreams and Their Significance

Prophetic dreams are considered to be the ways Allah communicates with His prophets. Prophet Joseph (pbuh) is known for his ability to interpret dreams, which helped him gain favor with Egypt’s pharaoh. The Quran mentions several instances where Allah communicated with the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) through plans. For example, the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) saw a vision where he and his companions performed Umrah in Makkah, which was later fulfilled when they could visit Makkah peacefully.

Notable Islamic Scholars on Dream Interpretation

Dream interpretation has been a subject of interest for many Islamic scholars throughout history. One of the most notable scholars is Ibn Sirin, who wrote the book “Tafsir al-Ahlam” (Interpretation of Dreams) in the 8th century. The book is considered one of Islam’s most comprehensive and authoritative sources on dream interpretation. Abu Bakr al-Warraq, a scholar from the 9th century, wrote “Kitab al-Manam” (The Book of Dreams), which is also considered a valuable resource on the subject.

Other notable Islamic scholars who have written about dream interpretation include Al-Tabari, Al-Ghazali, and Ibn Qutaybah. These scholars have provided valuable insights into the subject of dream interpretation, including the importance of understanding the context of the dream, the symbols used in the plan, and the personal experiences of the dreamer.

In conclusion, dream interpretation has been essential to Islamic tradition for centuries. Muslims believe that dreams are a means through which Almighty Allah communicates with His servants and seeks refuge from the devil before sleeping. Prophetic dreams are considered a means through which Allah communicates with His prophets, and many Islamic scholars have written about the subject of dream interpretation, providing valuable insights into the symbols and meanings used in dreams.

Interpreting dreams in Islam can be a complex task. However, some common symbols often appear in Islamic dreams and can be interpreted in a specific way.

Animals and Creatures in Dreams

Animals and creatures are often seen in Islamic dreams and can have different meanings depending on the animal and the context of the dream. For instance, rats are often seen as a symbol of poverty and hardship, while cats symbolize good luck and blessings.

Objects and Elements in Dreams

Objects and elements such as books, knowledge, blessings, and glad tidings are often seen in Islamic dreams and can have different meanings depending on the context of the dream. For instance, seeing a book in a dream can be a sign of knowledge and guidance, while seeing rain can signify blessings and mercy.

Scenarios and Actions in Dreams

Scenarios and actions such as the sea, eleven stars, water, fire, money, car, house, and food are often seen in Islamic dreams and can have different meanings depending on the context of the invention. For instance, seeing the sea in a dream can signify life and prosperity, while catching fire can mean danger and destruction.

Interpreting Islamic dreams can be a complex task that requires knowledge of Islamic teachings and traditions. However, by understanding some common symbols and their meanings, one can gain insight into the messages Allah may send through their dreams.

Dream Interpretation Practice

Islamic dream interpretation is a practice that requires caution and a deep understanding of the religion. Muslims believe dreams are a form of divine communication and can provide insight into one’s life. However, not all dreams are truthful, and interpreting them requires a skilled and knowledgeable interpreter.

Approaching Dream Interpretation with Caution

Islamic dream interpretation should be cautiously approached, as some dreams can be false or misleading. The accursed devil, also known as Satan or Shaitan, can influence plans and create false visions. Therefore, seeking an interpretation from a truthful and knowledgeable interpreter is essential.

Muslims are encouraged to seek interpretation only from those who deeply understand the religion and have studied the interpretations of dreams. It is also recommended to perform prayer and seek guidance from Allah before interpreting a dream.

The Role of the Interpreter

The interpreter plays a crucial role in the interpretation of dreams in Islam. They must deeply understand the religion and the variations of dreams. The interpreter should also be able to differentiate between truthful and false dreams.

In Islamic tradition, the interpretation of dreams is not limited to the literal meaning of the dream. The interpreter must also consider the context of the dream and the emotions and feelings associated with it. They should also be able to provide guidance and advice based on the interpretation.

In conclusion, interpreting dreams in Islam is a practice that requires caution and a deep understanding of the religion. Muslims should seek interpretation only from those who are knowledgeable and truthful. The interpreter is crucial in providing guidance and advice based on interpreting the dream.

Spiritual and Psychological Aspects of Dreams

Dreams have been essential to Islamic spirituality since Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Muslims believe dreams can be a revelation and communication between Allah and His believers. Dreams in Islam are not just a random occurrence but are believed to have spiritual and psychological significance.

Dreams as a Form of Revelation

Muslims believe that some dreams can be a form of revelation. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself received many revelations in his dreams, and his followers were also granted visions and dreams with important messages. The Qur’an mentions that Allah speaks to His prophets through dreams and that the truthful goals of believers can also be a form of communication from Allah.

Emotional and Mental States Reflected in Dreams

Dreams can also reflect a person’s emotional and mental state. Muslims believe that dreams can be influenced by a person’s thoughts, feelings, and actions. For example, if a person feels sad or anxious, they may have plans reflecting those emotions. Similarly, if a person has been thinking about a particular subject, they may have related dreams.

Islamic scholars have identified certain characteristics of dreams that can help in interpreting them. For example, dreams that occur in the early morning are believed to be more truthful, while dreams that occur during the day are considered less reliable. Dreams that involve water or the ocean are believed to symbolize knowledge, while dreams that involve one’s mother represent mercy and compassion.

In conclusion, dreams in Islam are believed to have spiritual and psychological significance. They can be a revelation and communication between Allah and His believers. Muslims are encouraged to pay attention to their dreams and seek Allah’s guidance.

Ethical and Social Considerations

v2 3rusk ufuyp

Sharing and Concealing Dreams

In Islam, dreams are considered to be a kind of spiritual perception. Muslims are encouraged to share their reasonable goals with others, especially those close to them, as good plans are believed to bring peace, blessings, and glad tidings. However, they are advised to conceal their bad dreams as they may cause fear and anxiety, and also because it is believed that bad dreams are from Satan.

According to Islamic teachings, a dream is considered truthful if an honest person sees it. Therefore, Muslims are advised to share their goals only with those who are honest and trustworthy. The companions (sahabah) of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to share their dreams with him and seek his interpretation. The Prophet (PBUH) would interpret their plans based on his knowledge and guidance from Allah.

Impact of Dreams on Individual and Community

Dreams can have a significant impact on the individual and the community in Islam. Promising visions are believed to positively affect the individual and the community, as they are seen as a sign of Allah’s blessings and mercy. Muslims are encouraged to act upon the promising visions and make them a reality.

On the other hand, bad dreams or nightmares are believed to hurt the individual and the community. Muslims are advised to seek refuge in Allah from the evil of bad dreams and to perform ablution (wudu) before going to bed. This is believed to protect them from the influence of Satan and to purify their souls.

In conclusion, dreams play an important role in Islam, and Muslims are encouraged to pay attention to their goals and seek guidance from Allah. Sharing good dreams with others can bring joy and happiness to the community while concealing bad dreams can prevent fear and anxiety. Muslims are advised to seek refuge in Allah from the evil of bad dreams and to act upon the promising visions.

Modern Approaches to Dream Interpretation

v2 3rusv 3kkmf

Contemporary Islamic Views on Dreams

Islamic scholars have traditionally viewed dreams as divine communication and guidance. However, with the advent of modern psychology, some contemporary Islamic scholars have started to incorporate psychological theories into their interpretations of dreams.

According to contemporary Islamic scholars, dreams can be interpreted in several ways. For example, dreams can be interpreted as a reflection of a person’s current circumstances, a warning from Allah, or a means of guidance. Furthermore, dreams can also be interpreted as a reflection of a person’s subconscious desires or fears.

Integrating Traditional and Modern Knowledge

While contemporary Islamic scholars have started incorporating modern psychology into their interpretations of dreams, they also stress the importance of traditional knowledge in dream interpretation. According to orthodox Islamic teachings, the performance of dreams should be based on the Quran and the Hadiths.

Islamic scholars believe that dreams can be influenced by several factors, including the person’s thoughts and emotions, the influence of Shaytan (Satan), and the person’s current circumstances. Therefore, it is essential to consider these factors when interpreting dreams.

In conclusion, while contemporary Islamic scholars have started incorporating modern psychological theories into their interpretations of dreams, they also stress the importance of traditional knowledge in dream interpretation. Islamic scholars can provide a more comprehensive and insightful understanding of dreams by integrating the conventional and contemporary inside.

10 Reasons Why Muslims Should Travel

Traveling is healthy for the body, mind, and spirit; Islam prescribes these exact reasons to why Muslims should travel.

If you’re looking for encouragement to plan your next adventure , here are eight wonderful benefits of traveling to help you decide.

1 – Create Meaningful Relationships

Knowing and learning about others is part of our deen. Allah says in the Qur’an,

“O mankind, indeed we have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another […]” (Al-Hujurat 49:13)

Visiting, experiencing, and relating to new people and cultures helps improve both your social and communication skills. You’re always likely to make some new friends along the journey. Traveling to new places allows you to build new relationships .

You can also use the challenges, experiences, and new knowledge about yourself to strengthen existing relationships .

2 – Shake Things Up

Travel keeps things interesting! If you are feeling confused, stagnant, or just plain bored in your life, taking a break from the ordinary can help you move forward . New experiences help you process old ones to make fresh, interesting connections in your brain.

Traveling can also act as a muse to your creativity . It helps you gather and assimilate new, original, and creative thoughts. Anytime you are feeling stuck or need a change of pace, travel is the perfect solution.

Travel also enhances and grows the amount of uncertainty you’re able to tolerate. And tolerance to change is a great skill to have when you head back to a more stable and settled life . Because no matter where you are, your days will always have unexpected challenges and hiccups: that’s life!

3 – Prove Dreams Come True

The whole experience of travel involves both planning and achieving your dreams . There is goal setting, itineraries, mapping out your experience, and waiting for the date. Travel is a new experience in space and time that usually requires both money-saving and pining for the experience.

There is a deep sense of accomplishment during and after travel. You’ve proven to yourself that you can achieve any dreams and goals when you apply yourself to them.

4 – Gain Peace of Mind

While some people use travel as a temporary (or semi-permanent) escape. It can also give you a renewed sense of peace with yourself and your “regular” living environment.

Travel — especially to drastically different cultures and faraway lands — can help you gain gratitude and appreciation for what you already have in your life. Travel inspires you to make peace with what you have and be grateful for your many privileges and blessings.

5 – Broaden Your Horizons

This travel reason is cliché but true. You don’t understand all that you don’t know until you’re exposed to it. Traveling helps you understand and see that you have a lot to learn .

There is a mystery to unlock about you, others, and the world we all live in. Traveling throughout the land gives you a chance to expand your maps of how you move in the world and gain new perspectives. Travel can also help you connect to God, His creation, nature, and the universe in ways that you can’t when locked in a box of your own making.

Islam doesn’t want us to stay blind to the ways and cultures of others. In fact, quite the opposite. Allah commands us to travel:

“Say, [O Muhammad], ‘Travel through the land and observe how He began creation. Then Allah will produce the final creation. Indeed, Allah, over all things, is competent.’” ( Al-`Ankabut  29:20)

6 – Collect Cool Stories

Travel gives you a wealth of memories to last you a lifetime. While there will be some fun (and some harrowing) experiences, no matter what happens, it will always be an adventure. Traveling helps you loosen up and have a good time experiencing new places, cultures, and people. Travel creates feel-good memories that you can share with your friends and family, or recall whenever you need to go back to a “happy place.”

7 – Challenge Yourself

If you feel you’re stuck in a rut in your daily life, travel can help you break free. Travel pushes you to the limits of what you can tolerate and master. This helps you get to know yourself better . Getting in touch with yourself, your essence, and your uniqueness are some of the greatest gifts travel gives you.

8 – Gain a Real-life Education

When you are on the ground in a new place, there is much learning to do in a short amount of time. You must work through puzzles and challenges on the fly. Traveling pushes you to develop new skills — even learn new languages — to both survive and thrive.

9 – Boost Your Confidence

Traveling, especially solo traveling, makes you trust yourself and become more self-reliant . It gives you a chance to understand and use your unique gifts to conquer new challenges. The more you practice traveling, the more your confidence builds and the easier it gets. This means that over time it will become easier to identify your fears and overcome them in new situations.

10 – Food! (For Thought)

Last but not least, let’s not forget the new foods. We tie so much of our cultures into the foods we eat. The spices, the preparation, the ceremony of serving: food is a powerful way to understand others.

When you understand the foods others eat and why they eat them, you get to know them on one of their most primal levels. We also can’t deny that most of the new foods you’ll taste on your travels are delicious!

Remember, you don’t have to go far to experience all these benefits of travel. Even a few hundred miles (or kilometers) out of your hometown can expose you to all the challenges, situations, and people who will help you grow.

Where have you always wanted to visit? What’s stopping you other than yourself? Enough with the excuses: take the leap and start planning your next trip today.

Islam Teaches That Our Souls Leave This World in Dreams

What Does Islam Teach About Dreams and Their Meanings?

Ever had a dream and wonder if it meant anything? What does Islam teach about dreams and their meanings? Scientists explain that every single person has a dream each night they sleep, although many do not remember them. The Islamic position on dreams often differs from the western attitudes toward dreams which are primarily influenced by scientific theories and a limited materialistic approach.

When we sleep our souls partially or temporarily leave our bodies. Sleep is a minor form of death, where the body is present but the soul is elsewhere. Some people underestimate the significance of dreams by completely disregarding them while others make too much of them and make every decision in their life based on a dream. Both the Quran and the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him highlight that some dreams have symbols and meanings.

The Prophet peace be upon him categorized dreams into three types:

  • a vision or true dream that is from God;
  • a false dream which comes from the devil
  • a meaningless everyday dream which could come from one’s lower self or subconscious thoughts

The true dreams are often given to those who are righteous but is not necessarily limited to them. The story of Joseph in the Qur’an is perhaps the best example of an interpretation of true dreams. The chapter speaks of three dreams, the dream of Joseph peace be upon him, the dreams of the two prisoners, and the dream of the king. Each of these dreams had a meaning that later unfolded into the real world. For example, the king said ‘Verily I saw (in a dream) seven fat cows which were eaten by seven lean cows; and seven green ears of corn and other (seven) dry. O’ chiefs (of my court)! Explain to me my dream, if you are able to interpret dreams’.” (Quran 12:43)

Most people at the time were unable to interpret this dream and considered it to have no meaning. But Joseph peace be upon him interpreted this dream to mean that Egypt will experience seven prosperous years followed by seven years of drought and famine. This interpretation saved the people of Egypt from starvation.

True dreams also come in the form of seeing good things, such as seeing oneself in prayer, in paradise , or dreaming of good. These dreams are from God and should be shared only with those one trusts.

The False Dream

A false dream is usually a nightmare which originates from the devil. The Prophet peace be upon him gave instructions about dealing with these types of dreams. One man came to the Prophet peace be upon him and told him that he had a dream that his head had been cut off and that he was chasing it. The Prophet peace be upon him laughed and said when satan plays with one of you in your dream do not mention it to people.

The Prophet peace be upon him instructed that when one sees a bad dream they should immediately seek refuge with God from Satan, dry spit three times on their left, turn to their other side, and not share it with anyone.

The Meaningless Dream

The last and perhaps most common type of dream is that which may not carry any meaning. This dream might originate from one’s subconscious, what they ate in the day, or simply a release of things in their short-term memory. The way these dreams can generally be distinguished from the true or false dream is the feeling one has. The true dream is accompanied by a sense that it was inspired by God. The false dream is usually frightening of a nightmare. The meaningless dreams are usually just materialistic or carry no significant spiritual feeling accompanied with them.

Islam Teaches That Our Souls Leave This World in Dreams

Islam teaches that the human soul is not limited to this world, but also connected to the hereafter. Dreaming is a form of the soul connecting with other souls or events in a different dimension. Déjà vu is an excellent example of this. Time is only a creation of God and therefore in God’s view, the future already happened. God is capable of transporting someone into the future and then returning them back to the present. They then live until they meet that point in time again and this brings about the déjà vu moment. This is not to say that this is always accurate, but that souls leave this world in dreams. As humans, we are not only materialistic bodily creatures, but we also have a spiritual element. Our soul’s year for spiritual fulfillment and connection with their source and Creator, God Almighty. Want to learn more about Islam? Call 877-WhyIslam, you deserve to know!

Dreaming about traveling here's what it means, according to experts.

Sarah Regan

When it comes to dream interpretation, so much of it depends on the context and finer details of the dream. To dream about traveling is no exception, with a myriad of variations that can change the meaning of the dream . So, we asked experts about a few of their top interpretations for travel dreams—here's what they had to say.

Dream interpretation.

Before diving in, it's worth noting that any scientific validity to dream interpretation is sparse. Generally, dreams are thought of as a means of memory consolidation and potentially even "predicting" the future (i.e., our brains running through potential scenarios that could happen).

Nevertheless, we've all had dreams that seemed a bit too relevant to our waking lives, raising the question, What was that dream trying to tell me? Only you can truly understand what the symbols in your dreams mean to you, but there are still some common tropes in dreams that interpreters take to have specific meanings.

7 reasons you're dreaming about traveling:

You're craving freedom..

According to dream expert  Leslie Ellis, Ph.D., dreaming about travel can indicate that you're on a quest for freedom. "In this pandemic era where travel has been so restricted, travel dreams could be some form of vicarious way of gaining freedom of movement," she says, adding, "Freud was not entirely wrong about dreams being a form of wish fulfillment, at least some of the time."

You're experiencing some kind of movement in your life.

Along with a craving for freedom, travel dreams can also suggest there's some sort of movement or momentum happening in your life. "Traveling usually represents forward movement—progress in some area," notes professional dream interpreter  Lauri Loewenberg . And as Ellis adds, this "movement" could be personal or professional, as well as actual geographical movement.

You feel in control.

If you're traveling in a vehicle in your dream and it's running smoothly, Loewenberg tells mbg that can mean you feel in control of some aspect of your life. "You want to be driving the car, for example, because that's letting you know that whatever issue this dream is commenting on, you're in control of it," she explains.

You feel out of control.

On the other hand, Loewenberg says, if the car is having some hiccups, such as malfunctioning brakes, "that's a good indication that you're having a hard time getting something started in your real life, or you don't have a good handle on whatever path of progression this is connected to."

She adds that if you're driving a car in your dream and get into an accident, this can mean you're experiencing a sort of emotional or energy crash in your life.

You're experiencing some sort of ending.

Crashes or accidents in travel dreams can also mean something is on the verge of coming to an end in your life (or already has), Loewenberg notes.

The theme of endings existing within travel dreams can also relate to life stages and death, Ellis explains. "They can, at the far end of the journey, indicate preparation for death. There are many accounts of dreams easing people into the final stages of their life , preparing them in ways that tend to be calming and spiritual," she notes.

You're advancing in your career (or thinking about it).

According to Loewenberg, dreams about traveling in a plane , more often than not, are related to your career path, "because the plane takes off and we want our careers to take off and reach new levels." Planes can also represent your spiritual or religious path , she adds.

You're searching for something.

And lastly, depending on your destination, travel dreams can mean you're looking for something in your life. "If your destination is a beach, for example, that means you're trying to reach a place in your life where you are having peace of mind," Loewenberg explains. Or maybe you're traveling to a hospital, which would indicate you're on a healing path, she adds.

Interpretations based on travel companions:

Family members..

With the previous interpretations in mind, it's also important to consider who's accompanying you in the dream. In the case of family members, Ellis says, this could relate to feeling of moving on, or moving forward, as it relates to the family members in the dream.

A romantic partner.

Loewenberg says dreaming about traveling with a partner can offer good insight into how the relationship is going and how you both are reacting within the relationship. "Pay attention to who's behind the wheel and how well the vehicle is moving forward," she suggests, for example.

If you're on a boat, she adds they often represent our relationships. (Relation-"ship," get it?) "A ship or a boat will be commenting on a relationship more than any other vehicle because it travels on water, and water tends to represent the emotional self," Loewenberg explains.

In that case, are you on an extravagant cruise liner that's sailing smoothly? Or are you in a broken-down boat that's sinking fast ? You can guess which one indicates a relationship is heading south.

Co-workers.

If you're dreaming about work colleagues, Ellis says this situates the dream story in the world of work. "Again, it can be telling to look at the mode of travel, ease of transport, and nature of the destination," she notes. Ask yourself if you're getting to where you want to go. "This can be a big life question. Are the people you are with helping or hindering your progress?" Ellis adds.

Traveling solo.

Of course, there's a chance you'll be traveling solo in your dream, as well. Loewenberg says a common vehicle in travel dreams is a bike or motorcycle, which are, of course, single-passenger vehicles. This would be a dream about a path you are on alone that doesn't affect anyone else, she explains.

"You also have to have good balance to operate a bicycle or a motorcycle, so take a good look at your emotional balance or anything you're trying to balance in your life," Ellis adds.

The bottom line.

Dreaming about travel isn't uncommon—and interpreting these dreams always comes down to their context. With these potential interpretations at the ready, you're all set to open your mind to the world of your travel dreams—and consider how they relate to your reality.

Train Dream Islam

travel dream islam

Why are trains symbolic in Islamic dreams?

Like any mode of transportation in Islamic dreams it tells you about your forward movements in your life.

But what makes a train different than a plane or bus, is its often hidden underground levels suggesting there are unconscious hidden elements to be found.

This might be why so many people remember their train dreams because they are oddly vivid. Though, it is what happens down in the train station that tells you all about how you are going to reach your destination.

Why train dreams are positive symbols in Islam?

The only time a train dream can be a negative symbol if the dreamer gets in a crash. All these dreams mean is you are not going to reach this particular destination in your life.

But the ones that take a train in your dream can be considered a good omen saying you will undoubtedly reach your destination.

Destinations in dreams can be both internal or external. Let me explain. Reaching a particular destination may imply a spiritual journey; While a spiritual transition is called a journey, it’s not necessarily a journey of physical travel or pilgrimage; it’s a process of going beyond your boundaries and taking the next evolutionary step.

Do trains dreams in Islam mean success?

According to Ibn Sirin he says travelling in dreams bring you wealth. Many dreamers actually report whenever they travel in their dreams it brings them success or new ventures in life.

The symbol of a train tend to appear in Islamic dreams when the person is undergoing major changes or new developments in ones life

The forward movement of the train is actually running parallel to your life’s journey; there will be delays, stops, movements, fast speeds leading you to new ventures and success.

How fast the train goes in your dream is a great indicator how fast and successful you will be. The faster the better. Like Ibn Sirin says “you will move from one place to another”… Do you remember reaching this new place?

travel dream islam

Why are you in a train station?

In Islamic dreams train stations represent the beginning stage of this new venture in your life. As if your unconscious is using the station to let you know you are in the waiting phase before you go.

Usually the dreamer has remembered paying a toll or paying for a ticket to get on the train. The person who allows you to go in rarely seen, but they play a major role in your life’s progress. For example, when new things are on the horizon and you are close to achieving the goal, than you will get through the gate.

This is why so often many people dream of missing their train which gives them insight on what will happen next.

Why are you missing a train in Islamic dream?

Don’t freak out too much if you miss your train in your dream because there will be another one around the corner.

Missing a train in Islamic dreams suggests some interference or slow down has temporarily stopped your advancement.

You will notice that the feeling expressed in your dream of frustration or annoyance will mirror this new stage you are trying to obtain in your life.

travel dream islam

What does it mean to dream of a train crash in Islam?

It is not uncommon to dream of either a train crash, accident or derailment because our goals sometimes crash.

Dreams of crashes tells you that what you have been working towards achieving has either a problem or something has stopped its progress. I mean what better way than to have a train crash in your dream.

The good news is if you put your trust in God he will put you back on the right track, you will just need a little patience.

Dream meaning of travelling with dead person in western culture

For some western experts in dream interpretations , dreaming that you are going on a trip with that deceased person means that there will be changes in your life, that for one reason or another something will come to you that changes your routine, but that you have their company, support, and support.

This group of dream analysts does not inherently connect visions of dead family members with something bad because mortality can be read in a variety of ways. These pictures that our unconscious mind sends to us might be connected to a big or unanticipated shift.

This type of dream is not related to that person dying suddenly, but to the need to address and close cycles in the relationship, or a wake-up call to appreciate more the moments in the company of that person. It should be noted that this is especially relevant when dreaming of relatives and close friends who are still alive, but in dreams appear dead.

Another possible interpretation of this type of dream is that it serves as a reflection that you are still living, that you have the opportunity to appreciate life, your family, or a vacation, and that you should make the most of these things because not everyone has the same opportunities as you do.

Do not dwell on the dream too much if the individual passed away lately and you had one, unless you want it to become a recurrent dream that disrupts your daily life. The occasional recurrence of a dream about a departed loved one is not only common, but also beneficial, as it helps our minds work through the pain of loss. You may even wish to close unfinished business with him, such as apologizing for having failed to do so when he was still living or discussing unresolved issues that have been eating away at you.
