Islamic Dream Interpretation: Good Visions, Bad Dreams, And Hadiths

In Islam, dreams are considered to be a kind of spiritual perception. The Quran refers to dreams as Ru’yaa (vision), Manam (sleep), Hulum (dream) and Bushra (tidings). And, dream interpretation, also known as oneiromancy, is described using the Arabic terms ‘Tafsir’ or ‘Tabir’ amongst Muslims. Many Islamic dream interpretation theories and observations have been proposed by various Muslim thinkers and philosophers over the past 1500 years. Several of these observations and understandings correspond with the recent theories proposed by modern psychologists.

How to interpret dreams in Islam?

Ibn Sirin, the most popular dream interpreter in the history of Islam, devised a system for dream interpretation based on the fact that both Hadith and the Qur’an teach Muslims to respect the psychological and spiritual importance of the dream experience. According to Ibn Sirin, the interpretation of a dream depends entirely on the life circumstances and personal characteristics of the dreamer along with the meaning of the dream. Besides, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “There are three types of dreams: a righteous dream which is glad tidings from Allah, the dream which causes sadness is from Shaitan and a dream from the ramblings of the mind.”

Islamic Dream Meaning

According to Sunnah, dreams are divided into three categories:

1. Good visions (Ru’yaa)

These constitute true or good dreams, which are believed to be from Allah. Those who spend their life truthfully are more likely to have true dreams. Also, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised that those who have good dreams should share them with only those who they like and trust.

2. Bad dreams (Hulum)

Bad dreams are believed to be from Shaitan. Anyone who sees a disturbing or unpleasant dream is advised to spit thrice on the left side immediately after waking up to seek Allah’s protection against the accursed devil. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also advised offering prayer if anyone ever has a bad dream and never disclose it to anyone.

3. Islamic dream interpretation of fire

Dreaming about lighting a fire and seeing others being led by its light suggests that the individual who lit the fire will eventually become a source of illumination for others via knowledge and wisdom. Worshipping the fire in a dream also connotes a desire to serve a ruler or monarch, as well as the possibility of erring. If the fire that is being worshipped is not lit in the dream, it indicates that the person is looking for illegal sources of gain.

4. Islamic dream interpretation of sea

The ocean or sea represents a huge realm and a strong dynasty as long as there is no evidence of mud, silt, or ominous waves. In a dream, if the person sees himself swallowing the entire sea, and only the king can see him, it foretells that he will rule and have a long life. If one dreams of drinking from it to satiate their thirst, this portends wealth, power, and long life. If he fills a pitcher with its water in a dream, it portends fortune, or Allah will give him a generous present that includes wealth and high status. His reputation, nevertheless, will last longer than his wealth.

5. Islamic dream interpretation of snow

In a dream, snow, and fire that are next to one other, stand in for love, passion, and connection. Snow in a dream might represent money or a medical breakthrough. If snow is present throughout its season, it represents wiping away troubles and revealing rivals or jealous friends. If one sees snow in their dream during a season other than winter, it might represent pain, profanity, or hurdles impeding their journey objectives. It could also represent disease or paralysis.

There are certain things that should be kept in mind by the Muslims attempting to interpret a dream. Following are some rules of Islamic dream interpretation:

It is advisable to avoid mentioning a dream for interpretation to anyone other than a scholar or a person you trust to be truthful and sincere.
Anyone who sees the Prophet in a dream has undoubtedly had a true dream as it is impossible for Satan to imitate the shape of the Prophet.
If a person sees the same dream multiple times or multiple people see the same dream, then it is a sign of truth and the dream is a true vision.
According to Islam, a dream that comes from Allah as a glad tiding usually takes a long while to occur. On the other hand, a warning from Allah occurs swiftly.
True dreams are usually short and concise. If a person has a long dream that seems endless or if someone sees a dream in which he/she is being chased without end, then it most likely means that the dream is meaningless.
Islamic dream interpretation is presumptive and not certain. It is possible that a dream is interpreted one way while reality plays out quite differently. So, it is advisable not to make major life decisions based entirely on the interpretation of a dream.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has prohibited anyone from adding something to or subtracting anything from a dream while relating it for interpretation. Doing this can spoil or corrupt a dream and is considered a great sin.
The same symbol occurring in a dream can have different meanings for different people as per Islamic dream interpretation.

Islamic Dream Interpretation Hadiths

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Indeed the worst of lies is that of a person who falsely claims to have dream.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)

The Prophet also said, “Whoever claims to have dream which he did not have, will be ordered to tie two barley grains together, which he will never be able to do; and if somebody eavesdrop on some people’s conversation which they didn’t want him to hear or they tried to keep away from him, then molten lead will be poured into his ears on the Day of Resurrection; and whosoever makes a picture (of a being with a soul) will be punished on the Day of Resurrection and (will) be ordered to put a soul in it, which he will not be able to do.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)

Narrated Anas bin Malik, Allah’s Messenger said, “A good dream (that comes true) of a righteous man is one of forty-six parts of prophet hood.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)

Narrated Anas, the Prophet said, “Whoever has seen me in a dream, then no doubt, he has seen me, for Satan cannot imitate my shape.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)

Narrated Abu Sa‘id Al-Khudri, The Prophet said, “If anyone of you sees a dream that he likes, then it is from Allah, and he should thank Allah for it and narrate it to others; but if he sees something else, i.e., a dream that he dislikes, then it is from Satan, and he should seek refuge with Allah from its evil, and he should not mention it to anybody, for it will not harm him.” (Sahih Muslim)

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Those of you with the truest dreams will be those who are most truthful in speech.” (Sahih Muslim).

Also, the Quran mentions the following incident about dreams and their interpretations:

When Yûsuf said to his father: “O my father! Verily, I saw eleven stars and the sun and the moon, I saw them prostrating themselves to me.” He said: “O my son! Relate not your vision to your brothers, lest they arrange a plot against you. Verily! Shaitân is to man an open enemy!” (Surat al-Yusuf, ayatyn 4-5)

Clearly, the scholars, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), as well as the Quran highlight that some dreams have meanings and symbols. However, interpreting dreams is a tricky business and is not always accurate. Therefore, dream interpretation must be treated with caution.

Are all the dreams seen by believers truthful.

All the dreams seen by the Prophets are truthful however, sometimes they may need interpretation. The majority of the dreams seen by the righteous people are truthful as Shaitan’s control on them is quite weak. Most of the dreams seen by other people are usually not true as Shaitan has stronger control over them.

How can meaningless dreams be differentiated from true dreams (Ruyaa) and bad dreams (Hulum)?

The best way to distinguish meaningless dreams from true or bad dreams is by focussing on the feeling one has. True dreams are accompanied by a feeling that they were inspired by Allah. The bad dreams are usually frightening or troubling. However, the meaningless dreams are not accompanied by any significant spiritual feeling.

Can all dreams of a person about himself/herself?

No. Many a times a dream is related to someone else’s life.

Does the Quran mention anything about dreams?

Yes, the holy Quran does mention about dreams. In one specific mention, it narrates a conversation between Yusuf and his father about a dream of the stars, the sun, and the moon.

1- True dreams are a part of prophethood, as it was reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “True dreams are one of the forty-six parts of prophethood.” (al-Bukhari, 6472; Muslim, 4201)

2- Dreams marked the onset of Revelation. (Al-Bukhari, 3; Muslim, 231)

3- The truthfulness of the dream is related to the sincerity of the dreamer. Those who have the most truthful dreams are those who are the most truthful in speech. (Muslim, 4200)

4- Towards the end of time, hardly any dreams will be untrue. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “That will be because the prophethood and its effects will be so far away in time, so the believers will be given some compensation in the form of dreams which will bring them some good news or will help them to be patient and steadfast in their faith.” (al-Bukhari, 6499; Muslim, 4200)

The same may be said of the miracles which appeared after the time of the Sahabah. This did not happen during their time because they did not need them, due to their strong faith, but the people who came after them needed them (the miracles) because their faith was weak.

5- Dreams are of three types : Rahmani (those that come from Allah), nafsani (psychological, they come from within a person) and shaytani (those that come from the Shaytan). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Dreams are of three types: a dream from Allah, a dream which causes distress and which comes from the Shaytan, and a dream which comes from what a person thinks about when he is awake, and he sees it when he is asleep.” (al-Bukhari, 6499; Muslim, 4200)

6- The dreams of the Prophets are wahy (revelation) for they are protected from the Shaytan. The Ummah is agreed upon this. This is why Ibrahim set out to fulfill the command of Allah to sacrifice his son Isma’il when he saw that in a dream; may peace be upon them both.

7- The dreams of people other than the prophets are to be examined in the light of the clear Wahy [i.e., the Quran and Sunnah]. If they are in accordance with the Quran and Sunnah, all well and good; otherwise, they should not be acted upon. This is a very serious matter indeed, for many of the innovators among the Sufis and others have gone astray because of this.

8- Whoever wants to have true dreams should strive to speak honestly, eat halal food, adhere to the commandments of shari’ah, avoid that which Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) have forbidden, sleep in a state of complete purity facing the Qiblah, and remember Allah until he feels his eyelids drooping. If he does all this, then his dreams can hardly be untrue.

9- The most truthful of dreams are those that are seen at the time of suhoor [just before dawn], for this is the time when Allaah descends and when mercy and forgiveness are close. It is also the time when the devils are quiet, unlike the time of darkness just after sunset, when the devils and devilish souls spread out. (See Madaarij al-Saalikeen , 1/50-52)

Al-Hafiz ibn Hajar said:

10- All dreams are either of two types:

1- True dreams: These are the dreams of the prophets and of the righteous people who follow them. They may also happen to other people, but this is very rare, such as the dream of the kafir king which was interpreted for him by Yusuf (peace be upon him). True dreams are those which come true in real life as they were seen in the dream.

2- Mixed up false dreams, which warn of something. These are of different types:

1- Games of the Shaytan to make a person distressed, such as when he sees his head cut off and he is following it, or he sees himself falling into a crisis and cannot find anyone to save him from it, and so on.

2- When he sees some of the angels telling him to do something forbidden, or other things that cannot possibly make sense.

3- When he sees something that happens to him in real life, or he wishes it would happen, and he sees it very realistically in his dream; or he sees what usually happens to him when he is awake or what reflects his mood. These dreams usually speak of the future or the present, rarely of the past. (See Fath al-Bari, 12/352-354)

11- Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “If any one of you sees a dream that he likes, this is from Allah, so let him praise Allah for it and talk about it to others. If he sees other than that, a dream that he dislikes, this is from the Shaytan, so let him seek refuge with Allah from its evil and not mention it to anyone, for it will not harm him.”

(Narrated by al-Bukhari, 6584, and Muslim, 5862).

Abu Qatadah said: the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Good dreams come from Allah, and (bad) dreams come from Shaytan. Whoever sees something that he dislikes, let him spit to his left three times and seek refuge with Allah from the Shaytan, for it will not harm him.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 6594, and Muslim, 5862). The “spitting” referred to here is a soft, dry spitting with no saliva ejected.

It was reported from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Alaah be upon him) said: “If any one of you sees a dream that he dislikes, let him spit to his left three times, and seek refuge with Allah from the Shaytan three times, and turn over from the side on which he was sleeping.” (Narrated by Muslim, 5864)

Ibn Hajar said: to sum up what has been said about good dreams, we may say three things:

A person should praise Allah for the good dream
He should feel happy about it
He should talk about it to those whom he loves but not to those whom he dislikes.

To sum up what has been said about bad dreams , we may say four things:

He should seek refuge with Allah from the evil of the dream
He should seek refuge with Allah from the evil of the Shaytan
He should spit to his left three times when he wakes up
He should not mention it to anyone at all.
In al-Bukhari, Bab al-Qayd fi’l-Manam, a fifth thing was narrated from Abu Hurayrah, which is to pray. The wording of the report is: whoever sees something he dislikes (in a dream) should not tell anyone about it; rather he should get up and pray. This was reported as a Mawsul report by Imam Muslim in his Sahih.
Muslim added a sixth thing, which is to turn over from the side on which one was lying.

In conclusion, there are six things to do, the four mentioned above, plus praying two rak’ahs, for example, and turning over from the side on which one was lying to lie on one’s back, for example. (See Fath al-Bari, 12/370)

12- According to a hadith narrated from Abu Razin by al-Tirmidhi, he should not tell anybody about bad dreams except a very close friend who loves him very much, or who is very wise. According to another report, he should not talk about it except to one who is wise or one who is dear to him. According to another report, he should not tell of his dream except to a scholar or one who will give sincere advice. Al-Qadi Abu Bakr ibn al-‘Arabi said: as for the scholar, he will interpret it in a good way for him as much as he can, and the one who will give him sincere advice will teach him something that will be of benefit to him and will help him to do that. The one who is wise is the one who knows how to interpret it and will tell him only that which will help him, otherwise he will keep quiet. The one who is dear, if he knows something good he will say it, and if he does not know or he is in doubt, he will keep quiet. (See Fath al-Bari, 12/369)

13- Imam al-Baghawi said:

“Know that the interpretation of dreams falls into various categories. Dreams may be interpreted in the light of the Quran or in the light of the Sunnah, or by means of the proverbs that are current among people, or by names and metaphors, or in terms of opposites.” (Sharh al-Sunnah, 12/220)

He gave examples of this, such as:

1- Interpretation in the light of the Quran: such as a rope meaning a covenant, because Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allah…” [Al 'Imran 3:103]

2- Interpretation in the light of the Sunnah: such as the crow representing an immoral man (fasiq), because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called it such.

3- Interpretation by means of proverbs: such as digging a hole meaning a plot, because people say “Whoever digs a hole will fall in it.”

4- Interpretation by means of names: such as seeing a man called Rashid meaning wisdom.

5- Interpretation by means of opposites : such as fear meaning safety, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And He will surely give them in exchange a safe security after their fear” [al-Nur 24:55]

14- As for the book “Interpretation of Dreams” that is attributed to Ibn Sirin, many researchers doubt that it can be attributed to him at all, so we cannot be certain that this book was written by this prominent scholar.

But how a dream is interpreted also depends on the dreamer's character and the context in which they live. Read on to learn more about how dreams are interpreted in the Islamic faith and why it's important to seek out a scholar to interpret your dreams for you rather than trying to do it on your own.

In Islam, there are 3 types of dreams: true dreams (Ru’yaa) that are messages from God, bad dreams (Hulum) that come from the devil, and dreams that come from your own mind.
Dreams can be interpreted in light of the Quran or Sunnah or by means of proverbs, names, metaphors, or opposites.
Seek guidance from Allah before you engage in dream interpretation. It's best to have a scholar or person you love and trust interpret your dreams.

True or good dreams can either be blessings or warnings. A blessing typically takes a long time to happen in waking life but a warning often comes swiftly unless the dreamer does what they were told to do in the dream.
Within the Islamic faith, recurring dreams are more likely to be true dreams than dreams that only occur once.
If you have a true or good dream, the Prophet has instructed that you should share this dream with everyone you love so that they might be blessed by the dream as well.

Spit three times on your left side immediately after you wake up to seek protection from Allah.
Pray to Allah for protection.
Sleep on your other side.
Don't tell anyone about your dream.

For example, if you watched a movie shortly before you went to bed, and characters from that movie appeared in your dream, that was most likely a dream from your own mind.

Specific aspects of dream interpretation are mentioned in the Quran, as well as sleep habits that can make it more likely that you'll have true or good dreams.

For example, if you went to bed early and woke early in the morning, performing an ablution before going to bed and then lying on your right side, your dream would be more likely to be interpreted as a true dream or revelation.

Step 1 Pray for guidance before seeking interpretation of a dream.

You can also pray for protection from the devil if you have a bad dream, although you typically don't want to seek further interpretation of that dream. The less you think about it, the better.

Step 2 Seek interpretation only from scholars or people you trust.

A scholar will tell you only the parts of their interpretation that they think would be helpful to you. If they analyze the dream and don't get anything out of it that they think would be helpful to you, don't expect them to share their interpretation.
Scholars as well as people you trust try to interpret a dream in the best possible light.

Step 3 Tell the whole dream when relating it for interpretation.

Generally, it's important to be honest about your dream so that the interpreter will be able to make the most accurate interpretation of the dream.
Even if you think something isn't important, it might be significant for the purposes of interpretation. For example, it might matter if the bird you saw was white or black.

Step 4 Categorize the dream before interpreting it.

Dreams that happen in the early morning hours are more likely to be true or prophetic.
Dreams that occur during the first few hours of sleep typically have little to no prophetic value.
Dreams that concern recent people or events most likely come from your own mind and don't have any prophetic significance.
Dreams that are short, clear, and concise are more likely to be true dreams.

Step 6 Take the character of the dreamer into account.

Someone who knows you well can likely give a more nuanced interpretation of your dream than someone who doesn't because they have better insight into your character.

Step 1 Dreams are a part of prophethood.

Prophets can use dreams both to predict the future and to provide warnings of things that will likely happen unless the people involved take specific actions.
For example, a true dream might tell a prophet that a man will come to financial ruin unless he stops doing business with another man. Later, the other man is arrested for fraud, but the first man doesn't lose his fortune because he did as instructed.

Dreams might also speak to entire communities. However, the Quran warns against creating laws based on divine guidance from a true dream.

For example, if you want to be a parent, you might pray for a child and then have a dream that you are holding your child in your arms. That dream could be interpreted as predicting that you'll have a child.

Both the Quran and the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him highlight that some dreams have symbols and meanings.

The Prophet peace be upon him categorized dreams into three types:

a vision or true dream that is from God;
a false dream which comes from the devil
a meaningless everyday dream which could come from one’s lower self or subconscious thoughts

The true dreams are often given to those who are righteous but is not necessarily limited to them. The story of Joseph in the Qur’an is perhaps the best example of an interpretation of true dreams. The chapter speaks of three dreams, the dream of Joseph peace be upon him, the dreams of the two prisoners, and the dream of the king. Each of these dreams had a meaning that later unfolded into the real world. For example, the king said ‘Verily I saw (in a dream) seven fat cows which were eaten by seven lean cows; and seven green ears of corn and other (seven) dry. O’ chiefs (of my court)! Explain to me my dream, if you are able to interpret dreams’.” (Quran 12:43)

Most people at the time were unable to interpret this dream and considered it to have no meaning. But Joseph peace be upon him interpreted this dream to mean that Egypt will experience seven prosperous years followed by seven years of drought and famine. This interpretation saved the people of Egypt from starvation.

True dreams also come in the form of seeing good things, such as seeing oneself in prayer, in paradise , or dreaming of good. These dreams are from God and should be shared only with those one trusts.

The False Dream

A false dream is usually a nightmare which originates from the devil. The Prophet peace be upon him gave instructions about dealing with these types of dreams. One man came to the Prophet peace be upon him and told him that he had a dream that his head had been cut off and that he was chasing it. The Prophet peace be upon him laughed and said when satan plays with one of you in your dream do not mention it to people.

The Prophet peace be upon him instructed that when one sees a bad dream they should immediately seek refuge with God from Satan, dry spit three times on their left, turn to their other side, and not share it with anyone.

The Meaningless Dream

The last and perhaps most common type of dream is that which may not carry any meaning. This dream might originate from one’s subconscious, what they ate in the day, or simply a release of things in their short-term memory. The way these dreams can generally be distinguished from the true or false dream is the feeling one has. The true dream is accompanied by a sense that it was inspired by God. The false dream is usually frightening of a nightmare. The meaningless dreams are usually just materialistic or carry no significant spiritual feeling accompanied with them.

"Traveling usually represents forward movement—progress in some area," notes professional dream interpreter Lauri Loewenberg . If you're traveling in a vehicle in your dream and it's running smoothly, Loewenberg tells mbg that can mean you feel in control of some aspect of your life. "You want to be driving the car, for example, because that's letting you know that whatever issue this dream is commenting on, you're in control of it," she explains.

You feel out of control.

On the other hand, Loewenberg says, if the car is having some hiccups, such as malfunctioning brakes, "that's a good indication that you're having a hard time getting something started in your real life, or you don't have a good handle on whatever path of progression this is connected to."

She adds that if you're driving a car in your dream and get into an accident, this can mean you're experiencing a sort of emotional or energy crash in your life.

You're experiencing some sort of ending.

Crashes or accidents in travel dreams can also mean something is on the verge of coming to an end in your life (or already has), Loewenberg notes.

The theme of endings existing within travel dreams can also relate to life stages and death, Ellis explains. "They can, at the far end of the journey, indicate preparation for death. There are many accounts of dreams easing people into the final stages of their life , preparing them in ways that tend to be calming and spiritual," she notes.

You're advancing in your career (or thinking about it).

According to Loewenberg, dreams about traveling in a plane , more often than not, are related to your career path, "because the plane takes off and we want our careers to take off and reach new levels." Planes can also represent your spiritual or religious path , she adds.

You're searching for something.

And lastly, depending on your destination, travel dreams can mean you're looking for something in your life. "If your destination is a beach, for example, that means you're trying to reach a place in your life where you are having peace of mind," Loewenberg explains. Or maybe you're traveling to a hospital, which would indicate you're on a healing path, she adds.

With the previous interpretations in mind, it's also important to consider who's accompanying you in the dream. In the case of family members, Ellis says, this could relate to feeling of moving on, or moving forward, as it relates to the family members in the dream.

A romantic partner.

Loewenberg says dreaming about traveling with a partner can offer good insight into how the relationship is going and how you both are reacting within the relationship. "Pay attention to who's behind the wheel and how well the vehicle is moving forward," she suggests, for example.

If you're on a boat, she adds they often represent our relationships. (Relation-"ship," get it?) "A ship or a boat will be commenting on a relationship more than any other vehicle because it travels on water, and water tends to represent the emotional self," Loewenberg explains.

In that case, are you on an extravagant cruise liner that's sailing smoothly? Or are you in a broken-down boat that's sinking fast ? You can guess which one indicates a relationship is heading south.

Co-workers.

If you're dreaming about work colleagues, Ellis says this situates the dream story in the world of work. "Again, it can be telling to look at the mode of travel, ease of transport, and nature of the destination," she notes. Ask yourself if you're getting to where you want to go. "This can be a big life question. Are the people you are with helping or hindering your progress?" Ellis adds.

Traveling solo.

Of course, there's a chance you'll be traveling solo in your dream, as well. Loewenberg says a common vehicle in travel dreams is a bike or motorcycle, which are, of course, single-passenger vehicles. This would be a dream about a path you are on alone that doesn't affect anyone else, she explains.

"You also have to have good balance to operate a bicycle or a motorcycle, so take a good look at your emotional balance or anything you're trying to balance in your life," Ellis adds.
