Best Area to Stay in Malta: 8 Towns With Their Pros and Cons

Visiting Malta was a unique experience for me. It is such a culturally and historically fascinating Mediterranean island that makes you feel like you’ve been transported to another time. But while I was planning my itinerary, I had one challenge – choosing the best area to stay in Malta.

This island is small, but there’s a lot to see, and getting around is not always simple and convenient (if you choose to use public transport instead of a car).

After exploring Malta, I could understand the characteristics of different areas and how easily reachable they were. So here’s a guide that will hopefully help you plan your trip.

Important Things to Know When Looking for the Best Area to Stay in Malta

1. Cars: I personally decided not to rent a car in Malta, not only because they drive on the left side of the road, but also because traffic is a big issue AND many sources made me want to avoid driving alongside Maltese drivers. Also, finding parking can be a challenge in the streets of these cities and towns, some of which are pedestrianized. If you do decide to rent a car, look for accommodations with private parking.

2. Public transport: While the local public transport system also isn’t perfect and it takes time to get from one place to another, I still found it fairly convenient to use buses, ferries, and taxis. So if you want to travel around the island without a car, choose an area that’s well-connected to different parts of Malta.

3. Beaches: Not all coastal towns and cities are necessarily good beach destinations as some don’t have beaches at all and others have rocky beaches, which are not suitable for everyone.

4. As lovely as most of these cities and towns are, they all have their not-so-pretty areas and streets with neglected buildings. Don’t expect every corner to be enchanting or picturesque, and note that you can find great hotels in Malta that are, unfortunately, located on very underwhelming streets.

5. Some accommodations require bookings of a minimum of 2, 3, or even 4 nights.

6. Malta uses plugs of type G and operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz. Many hotels also have plugs C, E, and F, but consider packing a power adapter and a voltage converter.

7. Read all the small letters to see if the price includes all the local taxes/extra charges.

8. As you can imagine, accommodation prices rise in July and August (mainly in August), though it’s also important to note that Malta has become a very popular destination not only in summer .

Valletta – The Best Location to Stay in Malta for Sightseeing and Taking Day Trips

The UNESCO-listed capital city, Valletta, seems like the obvious choice when looking for accommodation in Malta because it’s the heart of the action yet also makes a great base for exploring the rest of the island.

The fact that it was founded by knights (how cool is that?) about 500 years ago and many buildings from that era are still standing also means that there’s so much to do and see here, and no traveler can skip out on visiting this fascinating city.

It boasts countless landmarks, from religious sites like St. John’s Co-Cathedral to the knights’ newly restored Grandmaster’s Palace to the lovely Lower and Upper Barrakka Gardens.

It’s also an idyllic place to roam photogenic streets adorned with colorful Maltese balconies and lined with restaurants and cafes. Other interesting experiences in Valletta include boat tours of the Grand Harbour, seeing the Saluting Battery, visiting the National Museum of Archaeology, and more.

Pros of Staying in Valletta

– You’ll never be bored here. The city is packed with interesting sights (like St. John’s Co-Cathedral , Grandmaster’s Palace, and Casa Rocca Piccola) , museums, restaurants, cafes, and shops. – Apart from visiting all the landmarks, you’ll enjoy strolling freely through its quintessential Maltese streets.

– It’s directly connected by public transport to most tourist spots in Malta, including the Blue Grotto, Marsaxlokk fishing village, Mdina, Ħaġar Qim Temples, and Dingli Cliffs (making it an ideal base for exploring the rest of the island).  You can also take the Gozo Fast Ferry to reach Malta’s Gozo Island.

Cons of Staying in Valletta

– It’s a popular city that can get quite crowded.

– There are no beaches in Valletta, though you can take a 5-minute ferry to enjoy Sliema’s rocky beaches or take a bus to sandy beaches like Golden Bay.

Sliema – a Fantastic Base to Explore the Island

I loved staying in the city of Sliema, which is located only 10 km (about 6 miles) from the airport. It was once a small fishing village, but it has become a major residential and commercial hub.

It’s also a wonderful place to base yourself if you want to explore the rest of Malta by bus .

Pros of Staying in Sliema

– It’s directly connected by public transport to visit-worthy places in Malta like Valletta (only a 5-minute ferry) , the sandy Riviera Beach and Golden Bay (note that to get to Riviera Beach, you’ll have to walk down a lot of stairs from the parking lot/bus station ) , Mdina, Cirkewwa (from where you can take the ferry to Gozo island), and archeological sites such as Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum and Tarxien Temples.

– Y ou’ll find a variety of restaurants and bars in Sliema, many of which are situated on/near its coastal roads.

– You can stroll along its lovely promenade towards St. Julian’s and relax at one of its rocky beaches or lovely Roman Baths.

Cons of Staying in Sliema

– Though it’s home to a few points of interest like Saint Julian’s Tower and Fort Tigné, it’s not a landmark-packed city.

– It’s not necessarily a pretty/charming city. – When you walk from the waterfront toward the heart of the city, you’ll see that it’s built on a mild slope, so you might not like the location of hotels not near the promenade.

– It’s not directly connected by public transport to other popular spots like the Blue Grotto, Marsaxlokk fishing village, Ħaġar Qim Temples, and Dingli Cliffs.

Mellieha – Where to Stay in Malta for a Beach Vacation

One of the most northern towns in Malta, Mellieha is a great beach destination with a laid-back atmosphere (can be a great choice if you’re on a European girls’ trip , a couple’s trip, or a family trip).

Pros of Staying in Mellieha

– Closeness to Malta’s biggest sandy beach – Mellieħa Bay, also called Għadira Bay.

– Closeness to Malta’s other islands, Gozo and Comino.

– It is well-connected by public transport to both Sliema and Valletta.

Cons of Staying in Mellieha

– It is not as conveniently connected to other parts of Malta.

– Unless you find accommodation near the coast, it’s important to know that the town sits atop a hill (buses run regularly from the town to the beach).

Highly-Rated Places to Stay in Mellieha

Sunny Modern Apartments (budget/mid-range): With two types of apartments situated in the same building, you can book a 3-bedroom apartment (suitable for 6 people) or a penthouse apartment (suitable for 5 people), both spacious and fully equipped. St. Paul’s Bay, Bugibba, and Qawra – Popular Resort Towns

Located in northwestern Malta, these three adjacent small localities are popular resort towns. From this area, you can also take cruises and boat tours to the island of Comino and its Blue Lagoon .

Pros of Staying in St. Paul’s Bay, Bugibba, and Qawra

– You’ll find a lovely promenade and plenty of restaurants and bars in the area.

– The area is well-connected by public transport to Sliema, Valletta, Mdina, and popular sandy beaches like Golden Bay, Riviera Beach, and Għadira Bay (note that to get to Riviera Beach, you’ll have to walk down a lot of stairs from the parking lot/bus station ) .

– Closeness to Malta’s other islands – Gozo and Comino.

Cons of Staying in St. Paul’s Bay, Bugibba, and Qawra

– These are typical tourist resort towns, so they’re not the place to stay if you’re looking for authentic, local experiences.

– There are a few rocky beaches here, but it’s not your ideal beach destination.

– They’re not pretty/charming towns.

Highly-Rated Places to Stay in St. Paul’s Bay, Bugibba, and Qawra

St. Julian’s – The Best Place to Stay in Malta for Nightlife

Located right next to Sliema, St. Julian’s is a small town known for its hotels, restaurants, bars, pubs, and nightclubs (many of which are found in the district called Paceville ) .

Pros of Staying in St. Julian’s

– If you’re looking for a place that offers a vibrant nightlife and entertainment scene, St. Julian’s is for you.

– The town is very close to Sliema, so you can still reach other parts of the island relatively easily.

Cons of Staying in St. Julian’s

– Although you’ll find a couple of sandy beaches in this area (including St George’s Bay and the small Balluta Bay Beach ) , it’s not your ideal beach destination because they’re not very clean or inviting.

– It’s a typical tourist resort town, so it’s not the place to stay if you’re looking for authentic, local experiences.

– It’s not necessarily a pretty town, apart from the area near Spinloa Bay, which is more visually pleasing.

Highly-Rated Places to Stay in St. Julian’s

Marsaskala – One of the Best Fishing Towns to Stay in Malta

Located next to the famous village of Marsaxlokk, a seaside town you might like is Marsaskala.

Pros of Staying in Marsaskala

– It’s a laid-back less-touristy town, so it’s still relatively quiet and uncrowded.

– You’ll find many cafes and restaurants to choose from.

– Although not idyllic, there is a small beach in this town called St. Thomas Bay (it has a short strip of sand and the rest of it is rocky).

Cons of Staying in Marsaskala

– It is not so well connected by public transport to other areas in Malta, except Valletta and Marsaxlokk.

– If you’re looking for a vibrant place to stay, this is not it.

Highly-Rated Places to Stay in Marsaskala

Mdina and Rabat – a Piece of History

No Malta itinerary is complete without the historic city of Mdina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the former capital, dating back thousands of years.

It feels like it belongs to another era, and it is treated almost like a sacred place – no cars are allowed, it’s home to less than 300 inhabitants, and it’s called ‘The Silent City.’ That said, it has become a highly-visited city, and it does get busy when day trippers flock to see it.

You can count the number of accommodations in Mdina on the fingers of one hand, so if you want to stay close to this beautiful piece of history, book your accommodation in the nearby Rabat (located just a short walk away from the main city gate), which used to be a suburb of Mdina.

To get to know the city, you can take a guided walking tour .

One of the main streets in Mdina in Malta

Pros of Staying in Mdina and Rabat

– You’ll be close to all the sights of Mdina as well as to landmarks like St Paul’s Catacombs.

– Rabat itself is a bit more lively and has quite a few cafes and restaurants.

– Rabat and Mdina are well-connected by public transport to places like Valletta, the Blue Grotto, Mosta, Dingli Cliffs, Hagar Qim Temples, and the airport.

Cons of Staying in Mdina and Rabat

– Rabat and Mdina are not coastal, so getting to any main beach requires taking a bus or a taxi.

– Mdina can get a bit crowded with day trippers.

– It’s not the usual area most people choose to stay in, so highly-rated accommodation options are limited.

Marsaxlokk – a Famous Fishing Village in Malta’s Southeastern Region

Known for its harbor packed with colorful traditional Maltese boats, Marsaxlokk is a beloved fishing village. Its Sunday market has become a highly popular tourist attraction, selling fresh fish, vegetables, souvenirs, and more.

Marsaxlokk is located less than 7 km (4.5 miles) from the airport in the eastern part of Malta.

Pros of Staying in Marsaxlokk

– The village is small, but it’s home to more than enough restaurants, and it even hosts a famous market on Sundays.

– There are a few nearby natural swimming pools like St. Peter’s Pool (you’ll find boat ride services at the village’s promenade).

Cons of Staying in Marsaxlokk

– The village is not so well connected by public transport to other places on the island, except Valletta.

– It has a lovely harbor and promenade, but other streets can be underwhelming.

– I visited on a tranquil day, but it can get busy due to the popularity of its harbor and market.

Hi loved this article. Where would you say is the best place to go that has a nice holiday feel. With some bars and restaurants that is easy to get to get to valletta and Mdina. Thanks.

Hey. Jan! It sounds like you might like Sliema. It’s not the prettiest city, but it’s lively with lots of places to eat. It also has a lovely promenade, nice rocky beaches and Roman Baths, and it’s only a 5-minute ferry ride away from Valletta and a relatively short bus ride away from Mdina.

Hi, amazing article you got here, very helpful tips. I am planning to go in November, would you be able to tell me about what kind of weather to expect and are bars and cafes still opened during that month ?

Hey, Ron 🙂 I haven’t been to Malta in November, but to my knowlege, most restaurants and cafes are open year round, and the temperatures are supposed to be quite pleasant, but November is the rainiest month (though Malta is a sunny country).

Me and my partner would love to go to Malta and explore, go to the war museum, explore the caves, relax on the beach etc. We are also after great restaurants and a few pubs. We are in our early 30s and don’t want to be in a young, busy lively area full of nightclubs and the party scene, but in the same breathe don’t want to be anywhere too quiet and with no atmosphere. We’re hoping to hire a moped or car to explore the island. Where would you suggest would be the best place to stay?

Thanks so much 😊 xx

Hey, Liv! I think Valletta is a great base to explore the island (it doesn’t have a beach, but sandy beaches are a bus ride away). It’s lively but not full of young people who only come there for nightlife. That said, accommodations with private parking can be challenging to find in Valletta (I know renting scooters and motorbikes is popular, but I haven’t tried it myself, so I don’t know if it’s easier to find parking for them if you rent them for more than one day).

Thanks so much for the tips! Would you say it’s expensive there for food/drinks? xx

You’re welcome! I think it’s pretty average if you compare to countries like Italy or Spain. I haven’t dined there at high-end restaurants, but you can find cheap eats/street food like pastizzi for 2-3 euros, and a pasta dish at a mid-range restauarnts should cost 14-18 euros (that’s what I usually paid).

Sounds perfect! Thankyou so much for the tips! Will definitely be booking ☺️ xx

That’s great to hear! Would love to get your feedback when you come back!

Hi, my friend is traveling with a girl in July, they are young people and they are looking for a place with nice beach and vibrant (night)life.. Which area is the best one for young people like them (25-30years old)?

Hey! For this combo, you might want to look into Mellieha. Its beach is the largest sandy beach in Malta, and although I haven’t experienced its nightlife scene, I know there are quite a few bars there. St. Julian’s is the best area for nightlife, but its beach id definitely is not as good as Mellieha’s.

Hi i am going to Malta with my sister and we are looking for a place with sandy beach, well-connected public transportation (we don’t have a car), night life would be great 😅 but it’s not a must Thank you in advance

If you’re willing to replace the sandy beach with rocky beaches, I’d say go for Sliema (you can also get from Sliema to the sandy Riviera Beach). If not, Mellieha might be a good choice for you if sandy beaches are your top priority. You’ll be close to Għadira Bay, and it’s well connected to Valletta, Gozo, Riviera Beach, and Golden Bay, but if you want to visit places like Marsaxlokk and Mdina, you’ll have to switch buses.

wow, this article was heaven sent.I will be travelling with a group of girls for a long weekend but i feel the days are not enough to quench my Malta thirst hence i extended by 2½ days to enjoy on what was not planned in the group itinerary .what Museum and historic or old towns do you suggest? street foods and typical cultural foods to try? is there something like club crawling ?

I’m happy you find it helpful!

Valletta the capital and Mdina are two historic cities well worth a visit. I also traveled by bus through Mosta, which seemed very charming. Regarding street food, pastizzi (pastries filled with cheese or peas) are a must. And I know there’s a pub crawl in St. Julian’s (in the Paceville district), but I haven’t tried it myself.

Thanks for writing about your experience and sharing the details. It is much appreciated.

I am planning a solo trip and my initial itinerary was from London to Valletta and then visit other cities with beaches. However since there is no beach in Valletta would you recommend a stay in MARSASKALA instead (especially if i am after a quiet place with a beach)? Is it safe to travel at night between MARSASKALA to Valletta?

Thank you in advance for your time and support.

When are you planning to visit Malta? If you’re looking to stay in a quiet place then Marsaskala might be for you but note that its beach is small (and is partially sandy and partially rocky). If you’re looking for bigger, proper sandy beaches, I think you also shouldn’t rule out staying in Valletta and traveling by bus to beaches like Għadira Bay, Riviera Beach, and Golden Bay.

Generally, I felt safe traveling by bus in Malta, but I haven’t done it at night.

Thanks this is so very helpful, especially the description of beaches as my partner has mobility problems, meaning rocky beaches are not so great for us! We hope to go to Marsaxslokk or Marsaskala in August. What is St.Thomas bay like for gradient / rocks please?

Hi Rachel! I’m glad this is helpful – most beaches in Malta are not necessarily friendly for people with mobility problems. You might want to see a proper photo on Google Maps, but St.Thomas Beach has a small strip of sand (roughly 10 meters) the rest of it is rocky.

Where to Stay in Malta: 11 Best Areas

Where to stay in Malta; Best areas and neighborhoods

Find out where to stay in Malta with our in-depth area guide. Discover the best areas and neighbourhoods to stay in Malta for sightseeing and book your accommodation in a convenient location.

Malta is a central Mediterranean three island nation gem just south of Sicily, Southern Italy. What makes it unique to other mid Med destinations is that unlike most other islands in this sea, it is a sovereign nation , which happens to be one of the smallest on earth with a territory of only 125 square miles.

Yet packed within the sunny corners of this island are so many sites and treasures to see that you can not realistically hope to do them all justice in a single week long visit.

Apart from the sun, sea, and sand, the island is justly famed for being the 300 year long home of the great building crusader Knights of St. John . This enterprising group arrived in the 1530’s and stayed until nearly 1800 when Napoleon at last drove them out.

In those three centuries, the Knights kept busy building 365 historic churches around the islands (to have one for every day of the year ), over a dozen castle forts up and down the islands, three walled cities including the new capital Valletta and the old capital Mdina , and numerous palaces, charming villas, traditional Maltese houses, and formal gardens.

The islands are a feast for the eyes, with the beautiful wild flowers nearly as common as the architectural and artistic delights that cover the islands.

There is something here for everyone , from worshippers of the sun, to nightlife lovers, to nature walkers and everyone in between.

Be sure to bring your walking shoes whatever you do, for from cities like Valletta and the Three Cities to Mdina, Mellieha, and Victoria, this is a country that was made for walking and exploring by foot and on bus.

In the rest of the article, we look at the various areas in Malta and where to stay in Malta .

Table of Contents

Where to Stay in Malta: Best Areas

There are three main areas in Malta where tourists stay and several other minor ones. The big three most popular areas in which to stay in Malta while visiting are Sliema/St. Julian’s/Gzira, Bugibba/St. Paul’s Bay/Qawra, and Valletta/Floriana.

The good news is that all areas in Malta are safe for tourists, for either men or women traveling alone and in small groups alike.

1. Sliema, one of the best places to stay in Malta

Sliema is the commercial capital of Malta and a great place to do some shopping while visiting. It is also home to some of the more exclusive and expensive hotels in Malta along with neighbouring St. Julian’s to the north.

Sliema is an excellent choice for a place to stay in Malta for those people who love a variety of fine and casual dining options , as it has a plethora of both.

This is not the best area stay in Malta for those who are backpacking and looking for hostels, but for the upper mid to high-end budget range , it is a perfect choice.

From Sliema, visitors have an unimpeded view across the harbor to Valletta , whose stunning medieval walls and churches are all lit up every night.

2. St Julian´s, where to stay in Malta for nightlife

St. Julian’s is a former colourful fishing village turned high-end tourist lodging town, making it a fun place to stay in Malta . The highest building here is known as the Beckham building, where David Beckham long owned the top floor penthouse.

Visitors here will find a decent sandy beach on the north end of town at St. George’s Bay, many mostly high-end four and five star hotels, a beautiful seafront promenade that extends down into Sliema (and is the longest continuous stretching walking promenade in Europe).

Two picturesque bays make up the town of St. Julians’ which nestles in between and around them, and you can still see the colourful Maltese fishing vessels in both Balluta Bay and Spinola Bay as they ply their ancient fishermen’s trade.

For those who thirst for edgy nightlife , this is the place to be and where to stay in Malta. Neighbouring Paceville is the hands down, purpose built nightlife capital of the islands. There are bars and nightclubs here ranging from swanky and trendy to down right sleezy to suit all interests.

A high-end shopping mall and several shopping streets provide a more docile form of entertainment for those who like to call it a night earlier.

BEST PLACES TO STAY IN ST JULIAN´S

  • ($$$) Hilton Malta
  • ($$) be.HOTEL
  • ($) The District Hotel

3. Valletta, best place to stay in Malta for sightseeing

This is the walled fortress city capital of Malta , dotted with over 28 historic churches, the Inns of the Knights of St. John, interesting national museums, and several impressive fortresses and palaces as well.

From the Upper Barrakka Gardens you can enjoy free million dollar views over Grand Harbour into the Three Cities and the imposing Fort St. Angelo, still commanding the harbour vantage points and still held by the Knights of St. John (and occupied by them on the top floor of the three story fort) to this day.

There are not so many hotel options within Valletta city limits itself, though a few four and five star hotel choices do exist inside and immediately outside of the walled city environs.

The one square mile charming city holds the distinction of being the smallest capital city in all of Europe for good reason, and it was honored as the European Capital of Culture for 2018.

The city always has something going on, and is an excellent venue for walkers and backpackers, though it does not offer many budget accommodations for them.

Ferries are available to take visitors across the Grand Harbor to the Three Cities’ Vittorioso and also across to Sliema the commercial and shopping center of the island.

BEST PLACES TO STAY IN VALLETA

  • ($$$) The Phoenicia Malta
  • ($$) Palais Le Brun
  • ($) Hotel Castille

4. Il-Gżira and Msida, budget price accommodations and local experience

These two towns are much more Maltese residential areas. Gzira is immediately south of and adjacent to Sliema but is definitely much more of a working middle class town.

It looks over to Manoel Island , a causeway linked mid-harbor island that features exhibitions and a late medieval era fortress.

There are several more budget priced accommodations and hotels for visitors interested in watching their budget in both Gzira and Msida.

Msida has a lovely marina filled with hundreds of sail boats and a beautiful historic church also overlooking the harbor. Backpackers and hostel seekers are more likely to find success in these towns.

Good public transport in the form of the national bus line Tallinja connects these two towns with both Sliema/St. Julian’s and Valletta the capital, which can be seen across the harbor from many coastal parts of Gzira.

BEST PLACES TO STAY IN MALTA IN IL-GAZIRA AND MSIDA

  • ($) Azur Hotel by ST Hotels
  • ($) 115 The Strand Hotel by NEU Collective
  • ($) Euro Guest House

5. Mellieha, where to stay in Malta for a beach vacation

The beach capital of Malta, Mellieha Bay is wall to wall full of hotels ranging from mid range to high-end in price, all sitting directly on the bay and beaches. The town itself sits up on a high plateau overlooking the beach far below.

Mellieha is a charming out of the way settlement with as many people living here as in the capital.

It was honored as a European Union Tourism Destination of Choice for 2014, and remains a solid draw for those visitors to Malta who do not want to be in one of the three main overcrowded tourist centers of the island.

With over a dozen nationally regarded restaurants and pubs, it offers a decent selection of dining establishments and a far tamer form of nightlife here than St. Julian’s and its wild neighbour Paceville.

The main draw here is the beach and walks around the fairly large and most scenic town in Malta.

Backpackers will be in heaven here with a range of high hills and verdant vistas, and they will also find affordably priced accommodation suitable for their budgets.

Mellieha is only not a great choice for those who crave a thriving and wilder nightlife, as it is a sleepier town where the bus service shuts down around 9 pm each night.

BEST PLACES TO STAY IN MALTA IN MELLIEHA

  • ($$$) Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Malta Golden Sands (in Golden Bay)
  • ($$) db Seabank Resort + Spa All Inclusive
  • ($$) Maritim Antonine Hotel & Spa

6. St. Pauls Bay, Bugibba and Qawra, where to stay in Malta for families

The northern nightlife center of Malta is based around the three towns on St. Paul’s Bay— Bugibba, St. Paul’s Bay, and Qawra.

A favourite settlement among expats as well as the local Maltese, this is a place where visitors are just as likely to rub shoulders with British party people and expats as they are with working Eastern European and Balkans residents.

As far as accommodation goes, this area has long drawn in budget conscious travellers from Great Britain and Northern Europe especially.

Any remnants of a fishing industry are long gone here, as the area has enthusiastically given itself completely over to its calling as a full-scale tourist area and resort.

There are a few high-end hotels here, but most establishments are definitely on the budget friendly and backpacker side of the price range .

The area really caters to those looking for sun, sea, and overflowing alcohol in abundance in a relaxed, seaside, non-stop party-like atmosphere.

BEST PLACES TO STAY IN ST PAULS BAY, BUGIBBA AND QAWRA

  • ($$) Dolmen Hotel Malta
  • ($$) AX Seashells Resort
  • ($) The Pearl – Luxury Guest House

7. Mdina and Rabat, the original capital of Malta

Mdina and Rabat were originally a single town, the original capital of Malta from at least Imperial Roman times. First the Arabs and then the Knights of St. John separated Mdina from Rabat with a wide water moat and a bridge across it from Rabat to Mdina.

Vistas from the top of Mdina ramparts provide beautiful countryside and city-scape views of nearly half of Malta.

The area is mostly populated by locals and feels extremely residential, though bus loads of tourists come in on day trips from the hotels and cruise ships most everyday.

Hotels in either Mdina or Rabat are scarce , smaller and more personable, and higher-end .

It is definitely not the hostel or backpacker set of digs here. Only 300 people populate Mdina , and many of their families’ ancestors have been resident within the walls for hundreds if not thousands of years.

Nightlife here is non-existent other than some really fine and pricey restaurants , as every night the towns return to their original and more familiar sleepy roles of being traditional Maltese countryside residential communities.

BEST PLACES TO STAY IN MDINA AND RABAT

  • ($$$) The Xara Palace Relais & Chateaux
  • ($) Quaint Hotel Rabat
  • ($) Point de vue

8. Three Cities: Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua

The first headquarters of the Knights of St. John when they landed in Malta and prepared for the inevitable Turkish Great Siege, today’s Three Cities are far sleepier than they were 500 years ago.

Lodgings here would tend to be much more guesthouses or bed and breakfasts than hotels. The middle class Maltese residential areas are favorites of the locals with their sweeping views of Grand Harbor across to Valletta.

Another place where nightlife might mean a single lonely bar or pub, the Three Cities are not for the the wild nightlife set or the young at heart.

Aside from a few restaurants (and not really too many of these even), these local communities boast walks along charming steep Italian looking narrow streets more than beaches, parties, night life, or even shopping.

The towns are definitely busier and livelier during the days when the day trippers spill out from the buses coming from area hotels and cruise ships than after dark at night when a person can have a street all too himself if he so desires.

BEST PLACES TO STAY IN MALTA IN THE THREE CITIES

  • ($$$) Cugo Gran Macina Grand Harbour
  • ($) Casa Birmula Hotel
  • ($) Nelli’s B&B

9. Marsaskala, where to stay in Malta on a budget

Marsaskala is one of two unique working seaside fishing villages turned towns in modern day Malta.

A significant working fishing fleet still plies these waters leaving Marsaskala Harbor early every morning before sun up and returning each morning laden with fresh fish that they proceed to sell still quite fresh and right off of the quayside.

One or two mid range hotels dot the town, which features more guest houses and rooms for rent than hotels.

The town sits astride not one but two bays Marsaskala Bay and St. Thomas Bay, each with a lengthy and enjoyable promenade, making Marsaskala popular with the backpacking and beach combing sets .

For a town of less than 15,000 people, the fishing port actually offers three night clubs scattered around town, a number of late night Irish and English pubs , and dozens of good nationally renowned restaurants .

In summer time, the population rises by around 50 percent as both foreigners and locals come to spend weeks, months, or the entire summer down in Marsaskala.

Between the town’s two beaches, promenades, restaurants, and nightlife, and even a 500 year old castle fort of the Knights still standing guard faithfully over the now becalmed Mediterranean Sea.

Marsaskala offers something for every interest and taste , except of course for high-end, expensive, or large hotels, all of which it is surprisingly (and refreshingly) lacking.

BEST PLACES TO STAY IN MARSASKALA

  • ($) Cerviola Hotel
  • ($)  Sensi Hotel
  • ($) C’est La Vie Guesthouse

10. Marsaxlokk, where to stay in Malta in a fishing village

The other serious working fishing village oozing with lots of authentic seaside charm, Marsaxlokk still resembles the fishing port that remains at the mainstay of its locally based economy. Residents of this far southern locale are mostly Maltese.

Day trippers swell the population of the town as they come down for the twice-weekly market , to try the famed seafood restaurants along the seafront, and for walks along the sea and views of the colorful traditional Maltese seaside fishing fleet of little boats and a few larger ones.

Hotels here are practically non-existent, and Marsaxlokk has this in common with Marsascala its relative neighbor of the South.

Guest houses and rooms for rent fill the smaller demand for places for visitors to stay in lower to mid-end budget accommodations .

The South remains a backpacker’s paradise and delight with some of the island’s best unspoiled nature, and visitors will see many of them haunting such interesting local landmarks such as St. Peter’s Poo l and the Blue Grotto in Zurrieq .

BEST PLACES TO STAY IN MALTA IN MARSAXLOKK

  • ($) South Wind Guesthouse
  • ($) Dun Gorg Guest House
  • ($) Fisherman’s Cove Guesthouse

11. Gozo, excellent place to unwind and lose track of time

Gozo is totally unique in this island nation. The sister island to Malta has been accurately described as “the land that time forgot.” Visitors are just as likely to see a donkey pulling a vegetable cart to Victoria the capital here as they are hordes of crowds relentlessly combing the island.

Gozo may be one-quarter the size of neighboring Malta, but it has only around one-fifteenth of the population of its larger neighbor.

This means that visitors can backpack or drive until their hearts content, enjoying sparsely populated beaches , lonely green hills, abandoned rocky cliffs, and a fortress citadel capital in Victoria in the island’s heart.

There are places in Gozo where one can even enjoy a stretch of countryside all alone, a rarity in this most densely populated of European nations.

Places to stay in Malta in this small island range from guest houses and farm houses for rent, on up to mid range and high-end four and five star hotels mostly found in the popular several beach side resorts like Marsalforn or the intentionally centrally located capital of Victoria.

The island is an excellent place to unwind and even lose track of time . This means that nightlife is scarce though, so for those looking for more exciting night time pursuits or more abundant shopping opportunities, Gozo may not be the best choice of home base while staying in Malta.

For those looking for a secluded beach, enjoyable family run restaurant, or winding Victoria city streets separated by rolling green hills, this slower pace of life locale is the place to live like a local and take it easy on vacation for a change.

BEST PLACES TO STAY IN MALTA IN GOZO

  • ($$$) Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz
  • ($$) Cornucopia Hotel
  • ($) Murella Living

Where to Stay in Malta: Best Areas & Beach Resorts

Heading to Malta this year for some summer (or winter) sun? Here’s a comprehensive overview of where to stay in Malta – including its beach resorts, city neighbourhoods, medieval towns and sandy beaches.

This Malta resort guide will cover:

  • which part of Malta  to stay in
  • where to stay in the capital Valletta
  • the best luxury and beach hotels
  • Malta’s main resorts ; the best places to stay for nightlife, cheap packages and a younger crowd
  • the best quiet villages in Malta ; the best places to stay for couples, families and nature

MALTA OVERVIEW

Comino's Blue Lagoon

The name ‘Malta’ refers to the country, the archipelago (there are 3 main islands), and the main island in the group. The other two islands are Gozo and tiny Comino.

Together they make up one of the best destinations in the Mediterranean for history lovers and sun-seekers. It’s one of the most southerly destinations in Europe, with relatively warm and mild winters. Malta has long attracted snow birds migrating south for warmer temperatures – meaning package deals are available year-round. Just don’t expect the same nightlife outside the summer, or beach weather past October.

It has been a stalwart on the European package scene for decades but these days Malta draws in young clubbers with its festivals and events, and it makes a great short boutique getaway for those looking for a dose of culture. They are small islands and easy to get around, so transfer times are short.

Malta was ruled by the British until 1964 and you’ll spot signs of this around the island – red telephone boxes, post boxes, and high street shops. It may look like Italy in photos, but it doesn’t feel like it. The language is beautiful and baffling and the cities are awash with baroque buildings and crusader fortifications in golden limestone. The history doesn’t stop there though – there are ancient neolithic remains scattered throughout the islands.

But for a summer destination Malta is surprisingly short on sandy beaches. Most resort areas are built around harbours rather than beaches Don’t come expecting the beachfront resorts of Mallorca , Ibiza , or Sicily . Malta’s coastline is mostly rocky but the water is an amazing turquoise colour and there is swimming, snorkelling, diving, and boat trips galore. The best sandy beaches are in the north west and a short drive from the resorts.

The north coast is heavily developed and is wildly busy in the summer. As such, there are issues with pollution and traffic.  In high season it’s best suited to those looking for buzz. To escape the crowds, explore the inland towns and villages or hop over to sleepier Gozo.

Mount Carmel Church, Sliema

Getting Around

Airports : Malta International Airport (MLA) is located inland at Luqa. Buses run throughout the day to Valletta, St. Julian’s, St. Paul’s Bay, and Ċirkewwa.

Bus : See Malta Public Transport for routes and timetables.

Ferry : It’s possible to take a ferry to Malta from Sicily and mainland Italy – see Direct Ferries for more information.

Regular ferries link Ċirkewwa on the northern tip of the Malta with Mgarr on Gozo and Comino throughout the day.

NORTH/WEST MALTA – Capital city Valletta is on the north coast, in the centre of a densely populated and sprawling urban area that encompasses several smaller medieval cities and modern resort towns. These are referred to as separate places but essentially they all blend into each other and most are easy to travel between. At the northwest end you’ll find the best sandy beaches and a few large beach resorts.

SOUTH/EAST – The southeastern end of the island is less touristy but some parts are blighted by heavy industry. Highlights include the pretty fishing town of Marsaxlokk, the swimming areas of St. Thomas and St. Peter, and the Blue Grotto.

INLAND MALTA – Inland you’ll find the gorgeous medieval villages, archaeological treasures, and vineyards.

GOZO   – Quiet and unspoilt, come here to escape the crowds, hike, dive, and visit pretty churches.

COMINO – A tiny island which is a popular daytrip destination thanks to its incredible turquoise lagoon waters.

Valletta's cathedral from the rooftops

If you want to be in the thick of the history then stay in Valletta itself. Known for being Europe’s smallest capital city and virtually an open air museum, the whole walled medieval city is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Valletta is packed with historic sites and monuments, amongst them St John’s Co-Cathedral, the Palace of the Grand Masters, Casa Rocca Piccola, the National Museum of Archaeology, the Manoel Theatre, and Upper Barakka Gardens (come here to watch the cannons fire twice a day). There are fantastic art galleries, cultural events, and sophisticated bars and restaurants too – though late night clubbing tends to take place outside the city.

Valletta is named after the Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette, who founded the city. Its narrow golden streets lead to the sea and are highlighted with colourful doors and wooden galleried balconies.

It’s a convenient location if you’re relying on public transport to see the island, but if you have a rental car then think again – driving in the walled city is not advised due to narrow streets and lack of parking. Many of the side streets have steep steps. The bus station is just outside the city gates, in the area called Floriana . There are cheap boats which trundle over to Sliema or the Three Cities. Arriving into the harbour of Valletta is memorable so don’t miss a boat trip whilst you’re here.

5-star luxury can be found at several hotels – the spacious Phoenicia Hotel and Grand Hotel Excelsior are both located just outside the city walls, but the Rosselli gets our vote for its central location and rooftop pool.

There are many atmospheric boutique 4-star hotels in gorgeous restored buildings. If a pool is import to you then start with Palais Le Brun and Palazzo Consiglia . Otherwise, Casa Ellul and Domus Zamittello are tempting options.

Transfer time : 18 minutes from Malta International Airport

Sliema from the air

Sliema is a large resort town across the water from Valletta. The coastal promenade known as the Sliema Front has an modern vibe and is lined with shops, cocktail bars, and restaurants. Behind the promenade is the familiar warren of narrow residential streets.

In contrast to Valletta’s historic appeal, Sliema is all about the modern conveniences – it’s the site of rapid development with many high-rise apartment blocks concealing older backstreets. It’s a bustling social place with a commercial and affluent feel and is home to a large expat community, many of whom work in the gaming and tech industries which have been lured to Malta.

There’s no beach at Sliema, only the rocky platforms at Font Ghadir for swimming and sunbathing, but there is a marina and harbour where you can find watersports and party boats. It’s only a short ferry ride to across Valletta. Nearby St. Julians is within walking distance.

The rooftop infinity pool at modern 5-star The Palace can’t be beaten, though 4-star sister hotel The Victoria and the walled pool at charming Palazzo Violetta Boutique come close.

Good value rooms can be found Cozy Rooms and BluBay Suites .

On a budget or travelling solo? Flashpackers will love the Two Pillows Boutique Hostel with its charming design. Private rooms are available as well as dorms.

Transfer time : 20 minutes from Malta International Airport

St. Julian’s & Paceville

the waterfront of St. Julian's from above

Continue around the coast from Sliema and you’ll reach the buzzing town of St. Julians is located to the northeast of Valletta and is the liveliest resort area in Malta. There’s a small artificial beach to enjoy at St. George’s Bay , but St. Julians is also home to the biggest concentration of resort hotels on the island so there should be no problem finding one with a pool. There are also some rocky swimming areas and public lidos.

It’s a 20-minute bus ride into Valletta. In the evening, head to the waterfront at Spinola Bay for a good selection of restaurants (including international chains) and then on to the Paceville area for nightlife.

Many of the big international chain hotel are present and correct in St. Julian’s – there’s a Marriott , a  Hilton , an InterContinental Malta , and the Radisson Blu Resort St Julian’s which is one of the best resort hotels on the island.

But there are also some great independent options at a lower price point. Standouts include:

  • Hugo’s Boutique ,
  • Hotel Juliani
  • Hotel Valentina ,
  • HOLM Boutique and Spa ,
  • The Stonehouse

Backpackers have plenty of options in St. Julian’s – social Marco Polo and Hostel Malti are run by the same team and have plenty of activities, and for flashpackers there’s the Inhawi Boutique Hostel which has a pool and fresh design.

The Three Cities

view of the Grand Harbour from Senglea

If you’re looking for a quiet but atmospheric area to get a feel for local life them look no further than the Three Cities. Situated south of Valletta and across the Grand Harbour, the Three Cities encompasses three neighbourhoods – Birgu , Isla , and Bormla . Just to confuse you, they are also known as Vittoriosa (Birgu), Senglea (Isla), and Cospicua (Bormla). These ‘cities’ are actually older than Valletta and each were renamed after battles in the Great Siege of 1565. You’ll see both names used, and you might also see the Three Cities collectively referred to as Cottonera . Gentrification has recently arrived in the form of the Cottonera Waterfront and marina.

Vittoriosa is the oldest (it was the original crusader capital before Valletta was built) and best preserved of the three, which were heavily bombed during WWII. It also has the most life, with some decent wine bars and a long history of boatbuilding.

You can easily hop between Valletta and the Three Cities by boat or bus. There are several lovely hotels plus plenty of apartment rentals on Booking.com , and the area has a few small war, folk, and maritime museums worth visiting as well as its impressive fortifications.  There’s a street market on Tuesdays. Beyond Cospicua is Kalkara which is essentially the fourth of the Three Cities.

Standout hotels include:

  • Locanda La Gelsomina (Vittoriosa)
  • Cugo Gran Macina Grand Harbour (Senglea)
  • The Snop House (Senglea)
  • BOCO Boutique (Cospicua)
  • Casa Birmula (Cospicua)
  • The Lodge (Cospicua)

Transfer time : at least 15 minutes from Malta International Airport

Marsalokk and Marsaskala

Marsaxlokk harbour

If you prefer low-key fishing villages to big harbour cities then look east to low-key Marsaskala and Marsaxlokk .

Marsaxlokk is known for its weekly fish market and is the more interesting of the two. Most just visit for the day, so it’s quiet at night. The coastal stretch in between is home to the popular swimming spots St. Peter’s Pool and St. Thomas’ Bay, with dazzling rock formations and a sandy beach. However it’s worth noting that there’s an industrial presence in the area.

Try Quayside for rooms in Marsaxlokk – but the area is better suited to apartment rentals. Check on VRBO for a range of rentals in both towns.

Birzebbuga beach and waterfront

Just around the coast from Marsaxlokk is the seaside town of Birzebbuga , which is more popular than its neighbours thanks to the sweeping artificial sand beach which is known as Pretty Bay. It’s popular with locals in the summer and has a lively nightlife as well as family-friendly facilities. Several archaeological sites and the Playmobil FunPark are within a short drive of town and boat trips run daily to the nearby Blue Grotto. Unfortunately Malta’s main port is nearby – stick to the north and west coast if you’re looking for Blue Flag beaches.

Check VRBO for apartment rentals and villas.

Inland Towns

historic square in Mdina

If you don’t mind not being near the sea then there are several incredible medieval towns inland worth exploring – plus Malta is so small that if you fancy a trip to the beach it’s only a 15-minute drive. There’s not much in the way of activities or nightlife though so these towns are best suited to those renting a car and looking for a quiet rural base or romantic escape.

The main attraction inland is Mdina , the old walled capital of Malta which is immaculately preserved and also known as the ‘Silent City’. Rabat is the area of town outside the walls. Alternative options include the quiet village of Mgarr , an untapped destination which is close to the best sandy beaches on the island (Golden Bay, Riviera Beach, and Ġnejna Bay), and the small historic towns of Mosta and Naxxar which are a short drive from the bigger resorts of the north coast.

Top place to stay is the grand 5-star Xsara Palace Relais & Chateau in Mdina but try Quaint Hotel Rabat  if your budget doesn’t stretch that far.

Transfer time : 20-30 minutes from Malta International Airport

aerial view of Mellieha church

The small clifftop town of Mellieha occupies the northern tip of Malta and has morphed into one of it’s premier resort areas. The main appeal is the sandy beach at Mellieha Bay (also known as Ghadira Bay) which becomes predictably packed in summer despite the long walk from town. The sea is calm and watersports are available. Up on the hills are many large family-friendly resort hotels plus plenty of restaurants and amenities. Mellieha has a much calmer vibe and more local life than other resorts on the north coast. It’s the best option for beach access as long as you don’t mind the hills (buses are available) or being further away from Malta’s main sights.

Popular tourist attraction Popeye Village (built for a film set and then abandoned) is nearby, and you can catch a ferry over to Gozo from the harbour of Ċirkewwa.

The main resort hotels in the area are:

  • Ramla Bay Resort
  • Seabank Resort & Spa (package deals available through TUI )
  • Barcelo Labranda Riviera Premium Resort & Spa
  • Paradise Bay Resort

But there’s also plenty of self-catered acccommodation in the area on VRBO .

Transfer time : 40 minutes from Malta International Airport

Golden Bay beach from above

To the west of Mellieha, the beach at Golden Bay is one of the most beautiful and popular on the island. It attracts a lot of daytrippers, but if you want to stay right on the beach check in to the Radisson Blu Resort & Spa .

Two more excellent beaches are around the coast to the south – Riviera Beach and Ġnejna Bay .

Transfer time : 25 minutes from Malta International Airport

Bugibba / St. Paul’s Bay

Bugibba promenade and main road

St. Paul’s Bay is one of the busiest and most popular resort areas with international tourists, especially the British. It actually encompasses several different villages that have merged into one, and each area has a different feel.

The oldest part is the harbour village of St. Paul’s Bay. As it became popular development extended up into the peninsula to the areas now known as Bugibba and Qawra..

Bugibba is is where to head if you get bored easily. There’s every activity you can think of in this buzzing purpose-built resort, including a waterpark, and a long promenade lined with beach clubs and bars. Restaurants cater to international tastes and there are hotels and apartments at all price levels. However it does lack a proper beach – there are rocks and a few gritty beaches. Buses and boat trips to other beaches are available but they do get very busy.

The north of Bugibba morphs into Qawra , the posh end of the peninsula which is quieter and home to the more upmarket hotels. To the west there’s Xemxija , a quieter harbour with a traditional feel and many apartments to rent.

St. Paul’s Bay is prime package holiday territory so check out TUI and Jet2 for deals and availability. If you’re booking independently then have a look at San Antonio Hotel & Spa for all-inclusive and Park Lane Boutique Aparthotel for self-catered accommodation.

Transfer time : 30 minutes from Malta International Airport

Mgarr harbour, Gozo

The island of Gozo is like Malta in miniature, and thanks to the extra ferry journey it has so far been spared the worst of Malta’s overdevelopment and commercialisation. It’s much more relaxed and has a traditional rustic feel.

Gozo is popular with a more mature and active crowd who come to enjoy the island’s natural attractions and beautiful churches, and increasing number of chic hotels and farmhouse conversions. It’s feels like an island escape, is a renowned diving destination and beaches are much quieter.

Marsalforn, Gozo.

Ferries from Malta dock at the harbour of Mgarr , itself a picturesque small town. The capital Victoria (which is also known as Rabat) is located in the centre of the island, and the main coastal resorts are Xlendi on the south coast and Marsalforn on the north coast. Of the two, cliff-enclosed Xlendi is the prettier village. Marsalforn is more built-up but is better for beach-lovers – it has a small beach and is a short drive from the sands at Ramla Bay and San Blas Bay .

For 5-star luxury bed down at Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz or eco-resort Ta’Cenc . The latter offers a shuttle to a private beach.

Boutique hotels (most are inland) on Gozo include:

  • Thirtyseven
  • Dar tal-Kaptan
  • DGolden Valley Boutique & Breakfast
  • Hotel San Andrea
  • Quaint Hotel Sannat
  • Cesca’s Boutique Hotel

Apartments are readily available throughout the island – check Booking.com or VRBO .

Transfer time : 1-2 hours from Malta International Airport

aerial view of Comino's Blue Lagoon

The smallest island of the archipelago is little Comino, squeezed in between Malta and Gozo. Comino is the location of the famous Blue Lagoon which is one of the most popular day trips on the island. Very few stay here – and even fewer live here – but if a day isn’t enough for you there are rooms at the aptly-named Comino Hotel .

Where to Stay in Malta: The 3 Cities Birgu, Senglea and Bormla

The Three Cities: Birgu, Senglea, and Bormla. Wondering at the shores of Valletta, they can be easily seen, just looking at the fortified cities lying on the other shore of the Grand Harbour.

In the 16th century, the Knights of the Order of Saint John’s found them with the purpose of providing a fortress and home to thousands of people who settled in Malta.

Surprisingly, the area never became uncomfortably crowded by tourists, even though it is just a few minute’s ride from the capital by ferry.

The three cities are the best choice for those who want a really visually appealing atmosphere and would love to catch a glimpse of the local life. Families and romantic holidays can take place here, with memorable walks and wonderful views.

Prices are lower than in the capital, however, you can find high-standard hotels like Casa Birmula Hotel, or even rent a floating accommodation like the Riti Yacht, for something truly special. Fortunately, lovely hotel rooms are available in the whole area starting from 60 euros per night.

The best way to get here is by ferry, also because it gives an opportunity to enjoy the authentic panoramic views. Still, if you take the bus, the numbers you are searching for will be route number 1, 2, 3, 4, 124, and 213.

Recommended hotels in the 3 cities:

Sally Port Senglea – beautiful rooms with a balcony, free w-fi, a flat-screen TV, a fully equipped kitchenette, and air-conditioning. There is also a sun terrace overlooking the Grand Harbour.

Cugo Gran Macina Grand Harbour is located in Senglea and offers luxurious air-conditioned suites with free W-Fi, and toiletries, all with unobstructed views of the Grand Harbour and the marina. A rooftop swimming pool with breathtaking views is also available onsite.

Where to Stay in Malta: Sliema

Unquestionably the most popular destination for tourists. The city has been blooming for the last two decades, with a huge range of shops and commercial centers like Tigne Point. With fantastic panoramic views looking at Valletta, the infamous and beloved promenade lies long kilometers along Gzira, Sliema, and San Julians.

Infinite options are offered at the seaside with daily cruises to each corner of the country, enjoying a full day of sun by the sea. The 5-star Palace Hotel, a large variety of boutique hotels, luxury apartments, and B&B accommodations can be found rather in the higher range of prices, due to the huge amount of tourists in the summer season.

Sliema, where to stay in malta

Sliema is the best choice if you want a lively area, with modern services and sites. Restaurants and teeming bars are set in lines along the full length of the promenade. Travelers will find superb rocky beaches, some of them, like the one at the Surfside Restaurant, have artificially protected pool-like structures, where even the small ones can have a full day of fun, in safe waters.

Manuel-Island, just 10 10-minute walk from the bus and ferry station, provides an amusement park in the summer season, where all ages can get some crazy rides and concentrated adrenalin.

A unique attraction that’s worth mentioning is located near the park, called Dinner in the Sky, where your supper table will be lifted up 40 meters high by a crane, needless to say, the panorama from up there is something you will never forget.

Be ready for packed buses and long rides during the summer. Dozens of rides are going through Sliema and direct routes are provided to the bigger cities of Malta. Buses that stop in Sliema are number 13, 14, 15, 16, 21, 202, 204, 202, 222, 225, 233 and X3.

The best seafood specialties can be found here, simply because Marsaxlokk is the biggest fish supply of Malta. Lovely restaurants are located all along the harbor, offering the catch of the day. Luzzus, colorfully painted, decorative, and traditional fishing boats are remarkable details of any picture taken at the bay.

However, on the opposite shores of Mellieha, the longest and clearest waters will be at your feet, with enchanting azure colors and shallow waters reaching hundreds of meters. From kayaking to jet-skiing, and water-parachuting, the types of activities are endless.

where to stay in Malta - Mellieha

The best choice if your main goal is to get a nice tan, and enjoy the summer. For those that don’t bother to walk a few kilometers off the road, it is highly recommended to visit Armier Bay and Selmun Palace, in case you want to explore the remote and less-known gems of Mellieha. Routes that take you there will be X1, X1A, X1B, 41,42,101, 221,222 and 250. To get to the beaches on the western side the bus numbers are 44, 223, and 225.

Mellieha - the best area to stay in Malta

Recommended hotels in Mellieha:

Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Malta Golden Sands is a 5-start hotel with a large outdoor pool, a lagoon pool, a children’s pool, a private beach, and a spa. The rooms have a balcony, air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, and coffee and tea-making facilities among other amenities.

Maritim Antonine Hotel & Spa o ffers 3 pools one of which is a heated indoor pool, a sauna, a spa, and 3 restaurants. The spacious air-conditioned rooms come with satellite TV, free Wi-Fi, and coffee-making facilities

How to Get Around Malta

Not like in most countries in the world, the Maltese airport, Luqa, is not located in the capital, but a few kilometers south. The airport has its own taxi company, right in the terminal of the arrivals, also, car-rental services can be really convenient and cheap (15-25 euros per day) if you’re used to driving on the left side. Each bus lines starting with the letter “X” are going to take you to the airport, and also away from it.

There are no railways situated on the island, in fact, the only way to get anywhere is either by the road or by a handful of ferry rides. The taxi fare from the airport will vary from 15-40 euros, depending on the distance, and since we speak about a country with 316 square kilometers, the drive should not take longer than 1 hour, regardless of the destination.

Generally speaking, public transport covers the whole territory of Malta, but at times of summer, it slightly reflects the Mediterranean style, meaning of not always strict punctuality. This might not disturb someone from Italy, but can annoy a little someone from Switzerland or the Scandinavian countries.

In case of planning to take the bus, your fare will cost 1.5 euros and each ticket can be used for two hours, limitless times. However, especially in the summer season, a so-called Tourist Card is available which will allow you to take the bus 12 times for 15 euros, and we could call that quite a bargain.

Traveling to Malta, one should keep in mind that your perception of the distances might change during the stay. Malta is the 5th smallest country in Europe, and for comparison, if we were looking at France on the map, and we held a piece of paper from the same map symbolizing Malta, we could fit Malta in the territory of France 1745 times.

This is how incredibly small is it. Filled with magnificent beaches, breathtaking historical spots, thousands of years of culture, and one of the friendliest people of the world. It is truly a compact mixture of modern and traditional, quiet and buzzing, romantic and adventurous. Who would miss that?

Malta is a country of 300 days of sun per year, and often quite hot in the summer months. The winter means no snow, but loads of rain from October until April, sometimes May.

where to stay in Malta

Wondering the best places to stay in Malta? Here are my top picks, the best areas, and everything you need to know before choosing your base!

When I think about my trip to Malta, I can never quite believe how underrated that country is. Especially considering that it’s utterly beautiful, so historic, and has some pretty incredible beaches. I love Malta and, if you’re planning a trip to this Mediterranean gem, I just know that you’re going to love it.

When we visited Malta, one of the main things I wanted to know was where to stay. I was travelling as a group of 6, so I needed to accommodate that. We also chose not to drive – which turned out fine as the public transport was easy to navigate – and wanted one great place where we could base ourselves for the entire trip.

Luckily we had lots of options. Malta isn’t a huge island, so you can get from one side to the other fairly easily. However, I did find that the different areas of Malta all had different vibes – hence this guide!

Short On Time? Here Are The Top Places To Stay !

✅ This is where we stayed during our week in Malta ✅ The best budget option: The Osborne Hotel ✅ The best luxury option: The Xara Palace Relais

Where to stay in Malta

So, without further ado, let’s go over the best places to stay in Malta.

1. Valletta – best for being in the centre of the action

Valletta is the capital of Malta. It’s a fairly small city but can get pretty busy (especially in the summer months), and there’s a ton to do here.

The entire city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has plenty of history. You’ll find palaces, Baroque architecture, fortified walls, winding cobbled streets, and elegant churches.

travel best bets malta long stay

You can climb the hills and explore some of the gardens (I love the Upper Barrakka Gardens) and there are lots of viewpoints in Valletta where you can look out across the ocean. You can also visit the Three Cities from here, learn all about their history, and see several impressive fortresses.

A few of the top attractions in Valletta include majestic landmarks such as St. John’s Co-Cathedral and the imposing Grand Master’s Palace. You’ll also find plenty of bustling markets, quaint cafes, and lively festivals, offering a glimpse into the island’s rich heritage and traditions.

The Barrakka Gardens in Malta

You’ll also find that the majority of large events on the main island will take place here. For instance, we spent New Year’s Eve in Malta, and Valletta was where they held the fireworks display.

The Osborne Hotel

This stylish hotel is the perfect location in Valletta – not too far from the ocean and not too far from the centre! You’ll find a delicious breakfast, friendly staff who will be able to help you with whatever you need, and a lovely rooftop pool to relax in after a day exploring the city.

The rooms are very nicely designed with wooden flooring, neutral colours and elaborate headboards. The beds are super comfortable, and you’ll find a tea and coffee-making station and squashy armchairs.

Many of the rooms also feature stunning views over Valletta and you’ll find a gym in the downstairs area – ideal for getting in those steps before lazing at the beach!

Despite all these features, the hotel is also pretty affordable and ideal for couples.

2. Rabat – the best place to stay for a historical feel

Rabat is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful areas of Malta . The charming old town is a maze of narrow cobbled streets with towering buildings on either side. At times, it felt like I was walking through a honey-coloured brickwork maze!

This, coupled with the flowers everywhere, and the beautiful old-fashioned buildings make this area one of the most romantic places to stay in Malta.

It’s also really affordable and full of cute, self-catering apartments and houses. This was originally what drew us to the area.

The entrance to our villa in Rabat

In terms of the best things to do in Rabat, the main draw is simply the area itself. You can spend a lot of time getting lost down the pretty little streets. However, there are also several catacombs – St Paul’s Catacombs are the most famous – St Paul’s Grotto, St Paul’s Church, St Agatha Crypt, and much more.

There is a very impressive collection of historical sites and ruins in Rabat. It’s also within easy walking distance of Mdina – but we’ll get to that in a moment!

Casa Melita

This was where we stayed during our week on the island and it’s definitely one of the best places to stay in Malta – especially if you love traditional accommodation.

Casa Melita is a little 3-bedroom house tucked away down one of the winding alleyways in Rabat. It was a great base for our week on the island and I loved the traditional feel.

Casa Melita - our villa when we stayed in Malta

Inside is old-fashioned, but we found it quite charming. It’s also surprisingly spacious. There’s a large entrance lobby which leads to a kitchen and living area.

There were 3 bedrooms upstairs and two bathrooms and a further spiralling staircase led to a rooftop garden which would’ve been delightful in the summer months.

We visited during the winter months, so didn’t get a chance to use it. There was also a downstairs courtyard area with a patio that we didn’t get to use either which was a shame since a BBQ here would’ve been lovely.

Located within walking distance of Rabat, Mdina is another of the best places to stay in Malta. This is another very historic part of the island. Nestled on a hilltop in the heart of Malta, Mdina is a captivating medieval town.

Fans of the popular TV show Game of Thrones might recognise this place as it was a well-known filming location on the island.

Known as the ‘Silent City’ is a very peaceful place – well, when it’s not crowded with tourists, that is! That means that staying here is one of the best ways to view the area, as Mdina is the ideal place to unwind during the early morning and late evenings.

Found along Malta’s beautiful North coast, Saint Paul’s Bay is a famous seaside town best known for its sprawling promenade that stretches all the way to Qawra. It’s one of the best places to stay in Malta if you enjoy less touristy getaways but still like to have lots of things to do.

A popular holiday destination with the local Maltese people, you’ll likely spend your days exploring the village, swimming, snorkelling, trying watersports, horse riding, and walking along the coast in search of the best views.

5. Marsaxlokk – a good place for Maltese culture and history

Marsaxlokk is a traditional Maltese fishing village in the Southeastern region of Malta. This small village is most famous for its vibrant harbour, where tourists can find the iconic Iuzzu boats and other larger vessels.

These distinctive boats are the main attraction in Marsaxlokk. They’re painted in primary colours and, in keeping with traditions that date back to Phoenician times, feature the eye of Horus on their bow.

The beautiful luzzo boats in Marsaxlokk at night

When you’re not admiring these boats, you’ll find yourself exploring the historic architecture. Fort Delimara, a unique cliff-face fortress built in the 1800s and St. Lucien Tower, an impressive polygonal fort built in the 17th century, are fine examples.

Another popular attraction is the Marsaxlokk Fish Market, where you’ll find fresh-off-the-boat seafood and produce.

6. Sliema – best for Mediterranean vibes and a lively atmosphere

If you’re visiting Malta in search of Mediterranean warmth, culture, and lots of fun, Sliema is perfect. Once a small fishing village, Sliema is now a lively seaside town with a promenade that offers lots of entertainment.

Along the 1.2-mile promenade, you’ll find designer shops, bars and restaurants, historical architecture, and a handful of swimming spots, so you won’t be short of things to do.

Views over Silema Bay

Keep your eyes peeled for the II-Fortizza (an old British military installation come restaurant), the Art-Deco terraced townhouses, and Grandmaster De Redin’s 17th-century watchtowers.

Qui-Si-Sana Beach is a popular destination for beachgoers. Here, they can enjoy the turquoise waters and admire the surrounding architecture.

At night, Sliema is popular with partygoers. The Exiles Beach Club, the Hole in the Wall Pub, and Black Gold Saloon are just a few places to party the night away.

The Londoner Hotel Sliema

The Londoner Hotel Sliema is a gorgeous hotel with affordable luxury, convenience, and sea views. It’s just off the Sliema promenade and only 700 yards from Qui-Si-Sana Beach.

Partygoers looking for somewhere to relax in the day and party at night should stay in St. Julian’s, a lively seaside town 10 minutes drive away from Sliema.

Offering the perfect blend of Maltese fishing village charm and tourist entertainment, you’ll find everything from historic landmarks and beautiful beaches to lively bars and big resorts in St. Julian’s.

Beautiful views over Malta

During the day, rest easy on Balluta Bay Beach and wander around the small town centre, admiring the Latin architecture. Don’t miss Spinola Palace, built in 1688 and the neo-gothic Carmelite Church.

If you’d prefer more action, try jet skiing, parasailing, or kayaking at Sun and Fun Water Sports instead.

At night, take to the streets and enjoy some of Malta’s best bars and nightclubs. Footloose is one of the most popular destinations. Alternatively, enjoy a romantic meal at Rosami At The Villa , a Michelin-star restaurant overlooking the sea.

If you’re planning a luxury resort town holiday in St. Julian’s, you should stay at Hilton Malta . Perfect for honeymooners, this seafront 5-star resort hotel offers modern decor, high-class facilities, and magnificent views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Regarding bedrooms, Hilton offers deluxe rooms and suites. The spa suite has a roof terrace with a hot tub, and every room has a balcony, ensuite bathroom, and seating area.

8. Mellieha – best for sandy beaches and an authentic feel

Next, we have Mellieha, a popular tourist destination that maintains most of its traditional fishing village charm and ancient history. However, this vibrant village is best known for its sandy beaches.

Found at Malta’s Northern tip, Mellieha is home to several pristine golden-sand beaches with crystal clear waters and plenty of space to sunbathe. Għadira Bay and Golden Bay are two of the best.

The beautiful Popeye Village set in Malta

When you’re not soaking up the sun, learn more about Maltese culture by strolling around the village. The Parish Church, Our Lady Of The Grotto, and The Sanctuary are all major attractions.

Be sure to visit the Mellieha Air Raid Shelter, one of the largest bomb shelters in Malta, too. After walking around the village, you should start exploring its surroundings.

The Ghadira Nature Reserve and Majjistral Nature and History Park offer a countryside escape, while the 1980 Popeye Village movie set is a pretty unique experience.

DOMS Boutique Living

Accommodation options in Mellieha don’t get much better than DOMS Boutique Living . Located less than a mile from Mellieha Bay Beach, this 4-star hotel offers rooms in the heart of the village.

The Parish Church is right next door. You can see it from the rooftop pool.

DOMS also has an on-site restaurant and a bar. There are four types of rooms to choose from, ranging from Standard Double to Deluxe Suites with Spa Baths.

Every room has a modern interior, air conditioning, a large bed, and a private bathroom, and breakfast is included with each booking.

9. Gozo – best for quiet island life and hiking

Finally, we have Gozo, a historic island sitting off Malta’s Northern coastline. Gozo is only separated from the island of Malta by a small channel but has a much slower pace of life that’s perfect for a quiet retreat.

The island is also a popular hiking destination thanks to its scenic landscape. Several easy hiking trails are available along the coast and almost around the whole island.

One of the magnificent Temples in Gozo

Two popular trails are the Saltpans Walk and the Xlendi Walk. Meanwhile, Ramla Bay’s sandy beach is your best bet for sunbathing and swimming.

Gozo is also steeped in rich history, and Victoria (the island’s capital) and its Citadel are the best places to experience it.

The sun set over Gozo, one of the best places to stay in Malta

Inside the fortified stone walls, visit the Gran Castello Historic House and the prehistoric sculptures in the Gozo Museum of Archaeology. Other historic buildings on Gozo include Gozo Cathedral, the Old Prison, and the Ġgantija Temple ruins.

The Duke Boutique Hotel

If you want to explore Victoria during your visit to Gozo, I recommend staying at The Duke Boutique Hotel . This stylish and elegant hotel is located in the centre of Victoria and overlooks the Citadel.

Several room options are available, ranging from budget double rooms to a presidential suite. A delicious breakfast with local dishes is served daily, and many local restaurants are nearby.

All rooms feature a classic contemporary design and come with air conditioning, a private bathroom with a shower or bathtub, a TV, and WiFi. The Duke also offers activities like snorkelling, diving, and horse riding.

Final Thoughts on the Best Places to Stay in Malta

In my opinion, Mata can be as budget or a bougie as you make it. You can stay in a modern 5* hotel with a stunning private hot tub and balcony overlooking the countryside or you can stay in a traditional house down a tiny alleyway full of rustic charm.

If you’re visiting Malta for the first time, I recommend staying in either Valetta or St Julian’s. If you’re travelling as a couple, I recommend Silema, Mdina, or Gozo, and if you’re travelling as a family, I recommend Valetta or St Paul’s Bay.

However, you can’t really go wrong, no matter where you choose to stay in Malta. The area is full of great accommodation options, and you can very easily travel around the island via taxis or public transport.

Plus, Malta is a destination that can be visited all year round. We visited in December and had lovely weather and winter sun . But, if you’re after a sun tan, it can also be one of the best places to visit in July or August.

So, I hope this selection of some of the best hotels in Malta will inspire you for your adventure to the island.

Frequently asked questions

Still not sure where to stay in Malta? Let’s answer some questions you might have.

Where should I stay in Malta for the first time?

If you’re visiting Malta for the first time, you want to base yourself in a place that has frequent buses to popular attractions.

Bugibba (or St. Paul’s Bay) is a good choice, especially if you want to visit the beautiful beaches in the north of the island.

Where is the best place to base yourself in Malta?

If you’re visiting Malta for the sea, then you might want to base yourself in Bugibba or Sliema. These towns have a large stretch of coastline, and they’re also home to beautiful hotels with pools and spas.   If you want to travel around the island, I highly recommend staying somewhere more central, like Mosta or Rabat.

If you’re planning to travel by bus, Valletta would be the ideal base for you.

Is it better to stay in Valletta or Sliema?

If you’re interested in history and culture, then Valletta might be the best place to stay in Malta. There are plenty of attractions in the city, and you can get a bus to almost anywhere in Malta.   In the evening, the city is transformed into a magical place, with live music and colourful bars. However, you might be unable to find affordable accommodation in Valletta.   Meanwhile, Sliema is a great base for anyone who wants to spend long days by the sea. The streets of this bustling town are lined with shops and cafes.   Additionally, it’s right next to St. Julian’s, so it’s perfect for those who are visiting Malta for the nightlife.

Is it better to stay in Valletta or St. Julians?

If you love partying, then St. Julian’s is undoubtedly the best place to stay in Malta. This town is home to Paceville, the island’s nightlife hub. Moreover, you’ll find plenty of affordable accommodation in St. Julian’s.   Valletta is best suited for culture vultures and history lovers. However, you don’t have a lot of options when it comes to accommodation – it’s mainly boutique hotels and luxury apartments.

What are the best places in Malta for couples?

If you’re planning a romantic vacation in Malta, consider staying in a quaint village like Rabat.

Another great place for couples is Birgu. This old city is simply magical, with quiet alleys and beautiful views over the Grand Harbour.

Best Time to Visit Malta: Climate, Things to Do & More

Planning a holiday but wondering when’s the best time to visit Malta?

You’ve come to the right place!

In this guide, I’ll offer some local tips and advice on deciding what time of the year works best for you.

For most, the best time to visit Malta is in spring and early summer (April/May/June). At that time of year the weather is already quite warm and sunny with average daytime temperatures of around 20-25 °C (68-77 °F). October can also be a good option, with late summer weather still being warm but without the worst of summer heat.

If sun and sea are a priority, July, August and September are considered to be the peak summer months in Malta.

Ultimately, your travel plans might help you decide which is the best time of year to visit. Here are a few pointers to kick off this guide:

  • Best months for sightseeing: Any month in the year except July & August
  • Best months for sun and sea: June – Late October
  • Best months for beating the crowds: January – March

Overview of Malta’s Typical Mediterranean Climate

Strategically located in the Mediterranean, the island of Malta enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine every year. In short, no matter when you plan on visiting Malta, it’s very likely that the weather on the island will be pleasant.

Of course, you can expect lower temperatures, rain, and heavy flooding during the wintry months. The highest precipitation is generally recorded between the months of late November and February,  but overall, Malta is lucky to have mild winters (with rainy or windy days) when compared to other countries across Europe.

Quick weather facts

  • 300 days of sunshine every year
  • Average temperature: 23 °C (73 °F) during the day and 16 °C (61 °F) at night
  • Average annual sea temperature: 20 °C (68 °F) (highest in Europe)
  • Average hours of sunshine per year: 3,000+
  • Average annual precipitation: 600mm
  • Coldest month: January (10 – 15 °C or 50 – 59 °F)
  • Hottest month: August (22 – 31 °C or 71 – 87 °F)
  • Wettest month: November (108.6mm of rain)
  • Spring and Autumn pass in a couple of weeks’ time due to quick seasonal changes
  • Summer can start as early as April with slightly warmer temperatures and end as late as October.
  • Slight variations in daylight duration between seasons, meaning between 10 and 15 hours of daylight. Summer days are slightly longer, and winter days are shorter.

Best Time to Visit Malta – Months

As I’ve already highlighted in other sections of this guide, choosing the best time to go to Malta boils down to what kind of traveller you are and what you’d like to do during your trip. Although it’s possible to visit during any time of the year because you’ll most likely have good weather, a couple of differences come with the change of the seasons.

With this in mind, I’ll be pinpointing a couple of differences during specific months and what you should expect if you visit during those particular periods.

  • Malta in December

Off-Peak Season

If you’d like to get a taste of sightseeing, enjoy the first dip of the summer and ultimately beat the crowds, the best time to visit would be in April, May and June . Here are a couple of reasons why these months are favoured by both tourists and locals alike

Spring is the time of year when the flowers are in full bloom and when some of the best annual events are organised: Medieval Mdina (reenactments in one of the top tourist attractions), the International Fireworks Festival in Valletta, Isle of MTV, Earth Garden, etc. In April/May, local village feasts ( festi ) – an essential part of Maltese culture – also start becoming more frequent.

For the most part, you usually get the best weather of the year during this period. Expect lots of sunny days and warm temperatures, and May is usually the month when swimmers start heading to the beaches.

What’s more, you beat the tourist high season (July – September), which means Malta is far less busy, you can get better deals on flights, hotels and rental cars, and you also avoid the 30+ °C (86+ °F) temperatures and potential heat waves.

Ultimately, you get to see Malta and Gozo at their best. Summers are hot and dry, so that the islands will be much greener this time of year. Perfect if you want to explore the countryside or the numerous places to visit in Malta .

Hard to find dates in these months? You could also consider late March, although it can still be a gamble weather-wise as to whether it’ll be an early spring in the making or experiencing the last of winter weather.

If your main focus is exploring the Maltese islands, your best bet is basically any month apart from July/August. December, January and February are usually the coldest and wettest months of the year. One year, the weather remains relatively sunny; the next, you could be unlucky with cloudy and rainy weather. It’s a bit of a gamble, that time of year.

Top Things to Do

  • Visit Malta’s major attractions and museums with this combo pass , including bus and boat hop-on-hop-off
  • Blue Grotto and Marsaxlokk – Extended Half Day (Morning) – Start off the day with a trip to the famous Blue Grotto, named after the sea water’s lucent shade of blue. Afterwards, you will visit the charming fishing village, Marsaxlokk.
  • Explore Valletta with this 3-hour walking tour , which combines stops at some of the most historical landmarks with sampling traditional street food in the Capital.
  • Discover the historic Three Cities with the Vittoriosa, Cospicua and Senglea Boat Trip as you sail along the historic Grand Harbour.
  • Organise an off-the-beaten-track trail to places like Is-Salvatur Hill in Gozo
  • Book afternoon tea at one of the various tea shops or cafeterias around the island, such as Palazzo Parisio in Naxxar or Fontanella in Mdina.
  • Sample local wines at a wine-tasting session.
  • Visit Ta’ Qali Crafts to watch traditional glassblowers and artisans at work. A perfect place to buy a souvenir or two!
  • Spend a day relaxing at your hotel – spa facilities, outdoor pool, etc.
  • Book a play at one of the island’s theatres, such as the Manoel Theatre, Spazju Kreattiv, Teatru Astra or Teatru Aurora.

Peak Tourist Season

If the summer heat is something you long for and actually want for your holiday, you have two options.

Go in July, August or September. There’s a good chance you won’t see a single cloud in the sky during your whole stay, and you’re guaranteed to get a tan even if you stay in the shade. Yes, it will be busy on the beaches, but not to the extent that it’s likely to be an annoyance to you.

If you’re a group of party-goers, this is a great time to visit since boat parties and other events are organised on a weekly basis.

Be aware, though, that the further into August/September you plan your holiday, the more likely it is that the rising humidity will bug you. Further into September, there’s also a chance for freak rainstorms (signalling the change of season) to cause floods in the lower-lying parts of Malta and Gozo.

Alternatively, go in the second half of September or October . Forget about autumn. Malta’s late autumn usually comes and goes in a matter of weeks. Temperatures are still around 22-28 °C (72-82 °F), sometimes even lasting until November.

Tips and Local Advice

Now that you have some better insights on the best time to visit Malta, things to do and everything in between, I’m going to give you some local advice that will come in handy during the planning stages of your trip.

  • Plan ahead: whether you’re travelling during the low season or high season, making a rough plan of what you’d like to see and do during your trip will come in handy.
  • Book flights ahead of time . Especially if you’re planning on visiting in the summer, purchasing flights around the end of Jan-Feb is a must.
  • Choose sights and things to do based on your preferences rather than just for the sake of ticking them off your Malta bucket list.
  • Think about how you’re planning on getting around the island: bus, taxi or car hire .
  • Consider what type of traveller you are, your travel group, your budget and your expectations when booking your accommodation in Malta .
  • Along with booking day tours that pique your interest, remember that there are plenty of things you can do for free or are not as expensive , especially if you’re on a budget. (E.g., hike, watch the sunset, savour the best Maltese street food, etc.)
  • If you’re heading to Malta in summer and plan on going to popular beaches like Mellieħa Bay, Għajn Tuffieħa, Golden Sands and Blue Lagoon, go as early as possible. These spots tend to get very crowded as the day unfolds.
  • Want to beat the crowds at the beach? Check out secluded spots like Fomm ir-Riħ, Slugs’ Bay and St. Elmo’s Bay (in Malta) and Wied il-Għasri, Mġarr ix-Xini and Daħlet Qorrot in Gozo.

Events and Festivals in 2024

Malta’s events calendar is brimming with events and festivities all year round. Although the majority of events, such as the traditional festa , open-air festivals, boat parties etc., take place during the warmest months of the year, rest assured that there are plenty of things you can do during the low season.

Without any further ado, here are some of the most popular events from January to December.

Valletta International Baroque Festival

When: January

Where: Various locations around Malta

Every year, local and international artists perform only the very best pieces of classical music during the Valletta Baroque Festival. The event generally lasts over 2 weeks, with 31 concerts being performed in 17 beautiful venues across the island.

Carnival Celebrations

When: February

Where: Mainly in Valletta and Nadur (Gozo), alongside other villages

Carnival is a pretty big deal in Malta. Taking place in February in the lead-up to Lent, giant floats, and performers line the streets of Valletta for a celebration like no other. Dance competitions are organised, the Capital truly comes to life, and in general, you can expect a vibrant atmosphere.

If you’re looking for something a little different, the famous Gozo carnival is one to watch. Lots of locals and tourists flock to the Nadur Carnival for a massive street party featuring grotesque masks and people dressed in all sorts of costumes.

Holy Week and Easter

When: March or Mid – Late April

Where: All over Malta and Gozo

Easter is one of the most important events on Malta’s social calendar. In the lead-up to Easter Sunday, several events take place.

These include a procession featuring the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, Palm Sunday, the Seven Visits, where mass-goers visit seven churches to pay their respects on Maundy Thursday, and the Good Friday Procession; a number of towns and villages re-enact the Passion of the Christ in a procession featuring live actors and statues.

The celebrations end on Easter Sunday when families enjoy a meal together, and the statue of the Risen Christ moves along the streets in various Maltese towns and villages until it is carried back to the respective parish church by statue-bearers.

Festa Frawli / The Strawberry Festival

When: April

Where: Mġarr Village

If you happen to be in Malta around April, make sure you head to Mġarr for the annual Strawberry Festival. You’ll be able to sample and buy only the most scrumptious strawberries grown around the village’s fields. What’s more, you’ll be able to sample a range of fruit-based treats such as desserts, drinks and novelty dishes. In short, it’s a great annual event for all the family.

Malta International Arts Festival

Where: Valletta

This cultural event celebrates the love for artistic expression in a variety of exhibitions, performances and art. Since the events are organised in some of the most significant cultural buildings in the Capital, the Malta International Arts Festival allows both locals and tourists to experience something unique in an intimate space.

Isle of MTV and Malta Music Week

When: Late June / July

Where: Floriana, The Granaries

A highly anticipated event that is great for tens of thousands of party-goers and music lovers. Past editions have welcomed headliner acts such as Jessie J, Jason Derulo, Nicole Scherzinger, Rita Ora, Lady Gaga, The Black Eyed Peas, David Guetta, Akon, Martin Garrixx, and many other artists.

In the lead-up to the main event, you can also attend several open-air clubbing events that are usually organised at Cafe del Mar and Gianpula.

Victory Day and Feast of The Nativity of Our Lady

When: September

Where: Different parts of the island

This national holiday is celebrated on 8th September. It commemorates the end of three sieges that are integral to the island’s history. These are the Great Siege of Malta, where the Ottoman Turks were defeated (1565), the Siege of Valletta by the French Blockade (1800) and the Siege of Malta during the Second World War by the Axis Forces (1943).

What’s more, the traditional boat race—locally known as Ir-Regatta , is held at the Grand Harbour.

The 8th of September also honours the Nativity of Our Lady. Locally, it is known as Il-Festa ta’ Marija Bambina. This feast is celebrated in various parts of Malta, including Senglea, Naxxar and Mellieħa. It is also celebrated in Xagħra, Gozo.

Notte Bianca

When: October

Tens of thousands of people attend the yearly Notte Bianca (“White Night”). It’s a highly anticipated event held in the Capital, where people can wine and dine in the city, do some late-night shopping (since the shops stay open for a longer while), and enjoy an array of artistic performances.

Three Palaces Festival

When: October / November

Although a relatively new addition to Malta’s social calendar, The Three Palaces is a beautiful event where “ our ordinary is actually extraordinary”. The audience is treated to an array of artistic performances that celebrate Malta’s identity as a nation and beyond in some of Malta’s beautiful palaces.

The Festive Period

When: Late November – December

Where: Different parts of Malta and Gozo

Needless to say, the festive period is highly anticipated every year. Valletta and other small towns across the island put up Christmas lights, market stalls and Christmas music for you to enjoy as you go about your day. Some of the events that you can attend include Fairyland (just outside City Gate in Valletta) and The Magical Illuminated Trail (Verdala Palace Gardens).

On other notable days, such as Christmas Eve, many towns and villages hold a children’s procession and the yearly Priedka tal-Milied (Christmas Sermon). On Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, Maltese people either prepare a home-cooked meal or go out to eat with the rest of their families. All in all, December is truly the best time to visit Malta if you love Christmas and all the festivities.

What is the best month to visit Malta?

This is subjective as it depends on what your expectations are for the trip, what kind of traveller you are, etc. As a local, I think the Maltese Islands are at their loveliest during springtime (April-early June). The flowers are in full bloom, the fields are green, and, in general, it’s neither too hot nor too cold.

If you don’t mind the crowds and the scorching heat, the summer season might be the ideal time to book your trip. On the other hand, if you’re not fussed about going to the beach, book your trip during any month of the year except July and August.

What is the hottest Month in Malta?

The hottest months in Malta are July and August. It’s not the first time that the island experienced multiple heatwaves during that time of year. If you plan on booking a summer trip, make sure you stock up on the essentials such as sunblock, a hat and sunglasses. It is also advised to avoid staying out in the sun between 10 am and 4 pm when UV rays are at their strongest.

Is there a rainy season in Malta?

Due to its position in the Mediterranean, Malta is fortunate to enjoy over 300 sunny days all year round. Winters are mild, with rainy or windy days. The highest precipitation has been measured from November to February, but rain is rare on the island during spring and summer.

What are the top things to do during a trip to Malta?

Some of the top things to do during a trip to Malta include sightseeing around Valletta and Mdina, taking a boat trip across the Grand Harbour to visit the 3 Cities, planning a day at the beach, planning an off-the-beaten-track hike, swimming and snorkelling in Comino and anything else that suits your fancy.

I want to visit Malta. Is October a good time?

Hi John, yes, generally October is a good time to visit Malta. The weather will still be warm but you won’t have the stifling summer heat to deal with, making it much more comfortable for sightseeing. The one downside of planning around an October visit is that the weather can be unpredictable. One year it’s mostly sunny, other years there’ll be quite a bit of rainfall.

Good, pertinent information, thank you!

Hi, we would like tot come to Malta in the last week of May. What is the weather like there at this time of the year? we have visited Malta previously in July/August which was supper hot and we really liked it but this time we are coming with 2 years old daughter. So we think July/Aug will be to hot but wondering if May is not to cold, specially the sea temperature.

Hi Anna! In the last week of May it’ll usually be warm spring weather, so you’ll likely hit the sweet spot in balance between hot summer and early spring. The sea temperature, however, will still be a little cold even though most locals will take their first dip of the year at this time. mid- to late-June would be a much better choice in that regard.

I wish I would have read your articles before my Malta visit in February, 2019. Though it was not the best month to visit, still way warmer than Finland. I had really great time Malta. I visited few not so popular touristic places. I will remember your articles if I re-visit the island.

Hi Thanks for the details. How about travelling in April , is it too cold for swimming?

Hi Sunil, to the average person it’ll definitely be too cold for swimming at that time still!

Edward is it still warm at the end of September in Malta?

It sure is Chris, often well into October even.

Planning a 7 day trip to Malta in mid February. Is this a good time to go?

Hi Coleen, that’s pretty early in the season and unless you’re very lucky the weather’s unlikely to be warm and sunny. “Museum weather”, so to speak.

We’re looking for a beach holiday somewhere warm/hot for our family of 3 teenagers in October 2018. Ideally somewhere that offers some water-sports stand-up boarding, cycling, walking, gym. Will Malta have anything to offer?

Hi Anne, it’ll still be warm at that time of year and watersports are available at a few of the more popular beaches like Mellieħa Bay and Golden Bay. Cycling/mountain biking I would only really recommend in Gozo, as Malta’s roads are pretty busy and don’t cater for cyclists much at all. Gozo is still relatively quiet so easier/safer to get around by bike. There are several gyms around in the more popular areas and happy to suggest a few once you decide where in Malta/Gozo you’d like to stay. I hope that helps!

Thank you 🙂

My girlfriend and I are going for a couple at days in late October. Is the island still busy with tourists or will it be a little quieter?

Hi Luca, it’ll be a lot quieter than July/August but the downside is that the weather can be a little unpredictable (even though warm, temperature-wise).

Hello Ed, My husband and I are planning a trip to Sicily in October. I stumbled upon your wonderful website while doing some pre -trip research, on Malta! I am most fascinated with Malta’s long history and it’s beauty. I would like to include Malta either prior to or after our trip to Sicily. The Sicily tour begins on October 16 th in Palermo, although we were thinking about going to Catania for a few nights prior and then taking a train to Palermo to begin our tour. Your website is very informative, and I so happy to have discovered it! I am hoping you can help me though, since The details of doing this side trip have me in quite a conundrum! First, the longest I think we can afford to stay ( based on the accommodation prices would be 4 nights, unless you know some convenient places that are under 135/ night? I had heard pirices in Malta arevery reasonable, but so far the hotel, B and B costs look pretty steep. Secondly, I’m wondering if you can suggest where we should stay if we would like to go to Gozo also? I’m not thrilled about having to stay more than one place, but we will if that’s the best way. Third, I have read many mixed reviews about the public transit, but I’m a bit concerned about where we can park, ( as well as driving on the right side!) the trafffic, and best place to rent a car if we get one? At the airport or once we get to Valetta or wherever we stay? We were going to also try to visit the small towns in the “boot” of Italy, but I think Malta is going to be our choice instead due to its convenience to Sicily! I look forward to hearing from you soon! Thank you in advance for your help, Barbara

Hi Barbara, thanks, glad you like the site! I’d need a bit more info (e.g. where you’re looking to stay in Malta and how much time you’re looking to spend in Gozo) though I’ll do my best: 1) Accommodation is often cheaper searching on Airbnb (Added a link that gives you a small discount). Rates will be a lot lower than nearby hotels though you’ll only be able to get self-catering options there, renting directly from property owners. 2) Gozo – First off, I’d only consider staying there if you feel a day trip isn’t enough. For transport a hop on/hop off is probably the quickest/easiest way around though if you decide to actually stay there (and spend more than a day) I’d highly recommend renting a car. Driving there is easy (even if on the right hand side) and public transport generally gets worse reviews than in Malta. 3) Where to park really depends on where you’re looking to stay. Worst places are probably Sliema, St. Julian’s and the Bugibba area at this time of year. If you decide to go for Airbnb you could try and get a place with parking included, that could be an option. Otherwise let me know where you want to stay and I’ll give you an idea. Valletta as such isn’t practical for parking for sure, unless again, your choice of accommodation includes private parking. Otherwise you’ll have to park outside city limits and include a 10-15 minute walk. Renting from the airport or Valletta doesn’t make much difference, though perhaps if you’re nervous about driving on the right hand side you’re better off arranging for a car to be delivered at the location of your stay, which is usually included with the price. I hope that helps!
