Best Things to Do in Tampa From Wellness Activities to Fine Dining

Tampa is a city of leafy and palm-lined neighborhoods, the most inviting of which hug Tampa Bay and the Hillsborough River and radiate out from a new downtown district lined with boutiques, public art and worldly restaurants.

Pedestrian-friendly walking paths like the one along Bayshore Boulevard, which stretches for nearly 5 miles, and the 2.6-mile long downtown Tampa Riverwalk pair with a free downtown streetcar system that make it easy to explore on foot, via public transport or by renting a bike or motorized scooter to get around.

The city’s neighborhood du jour, Water Street Tampa , was recently named by the International WELL Building Institute as North America’s first certified wellness neighborhood thanks to design elements and policy strategies that spotlight community-focused elements (including public art, double-wide sidewalks and reduced light and noise pollution) that improve the lives of residents and visitors.

The 16-block district has completely remade the downtown corridor, once a virtual dead zone outside of business hours, into a livable, walkable, lively center, with events like monthly street markets and pop-up art installations that had long been missing. From Water Street Tampa, you can stroll the Tampa Riverwalk, scouting for passing dolphins and manatees along the way, to Armature Works , a gastronomic food hall housed inside a former streetcar warehouse where you can grab birria tacos or a Florida grass-fed beef sandwich for lunch. After, rent paddleboards nearby at Urban Kai to paddle out onto the river.

Just south of downtown in Hyde Park Village , a few blocks off Bayshore Boulevard and where 20th century craftsman bungalows abound, you can stroll leafy Snow Avenue, stopping at one of the many cafes and restaurants, ordering an espresso drink at Tampa’s homegrown Buddy Brew or getting a retail fix at at craft jeweler Albisia or French pret-a-porter import, Zadig & Voltaire .

For a more hipster scene just north of downtown, the residential and neighboring barrios of Tampa Heights and Seminole Heights are a hit for laid-back nightlife, especially at spots like craft cocktail hideaway Mandarin Heights and Shuffle , with indoor and outdoor shuffleboard courts and local beers galore.

If you’re visiting during the cooler months, from November to mid-April, rent a car for the short drive to the newly updated Manatee Viewing Center , just around the bay in Apollo Beach , where manatees arrive by the scores (and often times hundreds) when the mercury drops to warm up at the power station’s water outflow.

The best restaurants in Tampa

Tampa was finally awarded its first Michelin star in 2023, and you’ll want to book well in advance to land a table at Chef John Fraser’s Lilac , located in Water Street Tampa on the ground floor of The Tampa EDITION and where four-course Mediterranean-inspired meals comes with wine pairings from Sicily and Greece .

Water Street’s go-to spot for a lively brunch is Boulon Brasserie , for fruits de mer platters piled high, brioche benedicts and live music. And the more wallet-friendly and utterly delicious Pearl , across the street, serves Southern comfort fare like chicken wings confit and jalapeño spoon bread that’s great for sharing.

In 2023, Beacon rooftop bar opened atop the JW Marriott Water Street Tampa’s 27th floor as Tampa’s highest rooftop (and Florida’s second highest), with outdoor tables from which you can enjoy sweeping views of downtown and Bayshore Boulevard alongside charcuterie towers and the divine steamed pork belly buns. Across the street at the Tampa Marriott Water Street, Lona by Chef Richard Sandoval has Water Street’s best daily happy hour (from 4pm to 6pm) and margs and mojitos from $7. Bookmark Predalina , also in the district, for upscale Mediterranean fare, and finish the night with a scoop of the Cuban-inspired guava and pastelito ice cream at scratch-made Tampa ice creamery, Chill Bros.

Hyde Park Village’s hottest restaurant newcomer is Ro , where the fresh seafood is flown in from Tokyo’s Toyosu Market for Tampa’s most revelatory sushi and sashimi experience. Nearby, On Swann has been a neighborhood fixture for several years and stays packed with loyal diners who gravitate to the stylish, tiled interior and cozy sidewalk patio for the cult kale salad and generous steak frites. The neighborhood's best sidewalk terrace, people watching and sublime Wagyu steaks, sea bass and gouda tater tots await at  Meat Market . Families like Forbici Modern Italian for pizza and Bartaco for Mexican, both with a boisterous atmosphere that cancels out both crying babies and partying college kids.

And in Seminole Heights, the brewery crowd converges at spots like Southern Brewing & Winery and Common Dialect while Michelin-worthy Rooster & The Till remains the neighborhood’s gastronomic go-to for its central wraparound eat-in bar (calling all solo diners) and Latin tasting menus.

Other restaurant newcomers to seek out around Tampa include Ebbe–Chef’s Counter , a few blocks off the Tampa Riverwalk and where Swedish chef Ebbe Volmer’s seasonal tasting menus are served in an intimate 24-seat space, and Sunda New Asian in the city’s burgeoning Midtown district.

You’ll never go wrong in Tampa with dinner at the circa 1956 Bern’s Steak House (if you can snag a table, of course), with its legendary wine cellar housing more than 100,000 bottles and where locals know one of the best seats in the house is a walk-up spot at the bar for the off-menu steak sandwich.

Where to stay

To be close to the best things to see and do in Tampa, opt to stay at a hotel in Water Street Tampa, Ybor City or Hyde Park Village. In the former, The Tampa EDITION (from $399 per night) opened in 2022 as the city’s first true five star property, with a gorgeous rooftop pool deck cascading with tropical plants, onsite nightlife venues (including the jewel-toned Punch Room , where rum drinks reign) and one of the city’s top spas.

Right in Hyde Park Village, Palisociety debuted its only Florida property in late 2023, Palihouse Hyde Park Village (from $305 per night), a boutique beauty housed on the second floor of a discreet building just steps from restaurants and bars (including the gorgeous house one, reserved for hotel guests) and with just 36 lavishly appointed guest rooms.

Ybor City’s finest address is Hotel Haya (from $175 per night), which pays homage to pre-revolution Cuba at fine dining restaurant Flor Fina and the gorgeous little coffee and breakfast bar, Cafe Quiquiriqui , which serves some of the city’s tastiest Cuban sandwiches and strongest cortaditos .

Hidden Tampa: The Best of an Often-Overlooked Florida City

From a Buddhist temple reached by boat to a storied hotel and a speakeasy bar: a cheat sheet on what to do in this Gulf Coast city, which has found new fans during the pandemic.

travel and leisure tampa

By Dave Seminara

I live 15 minutes from Tampa, Fla., but I hardly ever visited the Gulf Coast city when I moved to nearby St. Petersburg in 2019. My friends in St. Pete dismissed the place as a sprawling, sun-baked collection of strip malls, and the traffic on the Gandy and Howard Frankland bridges connecting the two cities was an incentive to stay on “our” side of the bay. Then the pandemic came and with it more time in the area and a lot less traffic.

My initial forays to “their” side of the bay were aimed at finding things my new hometown lacked, beginning with tennis, Turkish food and tamales. I discovered Racquet Heads , a wonderful little tennis shop hidden underneath a highway overpass. Then I became addicted to the kebabs and lahmacun (Turkish pizza) at Istanbul Mediterranean Grill & Restaurant near the Busch Gardens theme park, and the irresistible tamales at Lolis Mexican Cravings , an excellent fast-food Mexican restaurant with five locations in Tampa.

I wasn’t the only one checking out Tampa. In 2020, Tom Brady came to town, and it hasn’t just been the area’s excellent sports teams that have been on a winning streak of late. The flood of Northerners in search of sandals-and-shorts winters accelerated during the pandemic. Zillow, the real estate website, recently forecast that Tampa will be the hottest housing market in the country this year, and Forbes named Tampa the number one emerging tech city in the nation last summer. The city’s revitalized downtown will get another boost with the eco-friendly Water Street Tampa project, which will bring 3,500 new downtown condos and rentals, along with retail and hotel developments, including the soon-to-open EDITION , a striking luxury hotel, steps from the Hillsborough River.

Long overshadowed by Miami, Orlando and Key West, Tampa is emerging as a cool place to live. But is it really a place to spend your vacation?

From a tourism perspective, this city of 400,000, tucked into a metro area of about three million, remains a bit of a secret, despite its recent growth. Many visitors still fly into the Tampa’s award-winning airport and head straight to the beaches in St. Petersburg and Clearwater. But as I’ve found in my recent travels, they may be missing something.

The early days

William Drysdale was a peripatetic writer who wrote more than 50 “travel letters” from Florida in the late 19th century for The New York Times. On his first trip to Tampa Bay in 1884, the year the railroad magnate Henry Plant introduced rail service to Tampa, Drysdale extended a one-night stay into a fortnight. “After visiting nearly all the warm countries frequented by Americans, Cuba, Mexico, Bermuda, Yucatan, Texas, Louisiana, and many of the smaller West India islands,” he wrote, “I like the West Coast of Florida best of all.”

Florida Historical Quarterly credits Drysdale’s Florida dispatches with helping “create a winter tourism bond between New York and the sunshine state which has remained firmly in place for more than 100 years.”

Before Plant opened the Tampa Bay Hotel — his lavish, “fireproof,” 511-room, Moorish-style palace — in 1891, Drysdale was given a preview and wrote a gushing dispatch , claiming “its domes and spires … its 150 acres of groves, its 2,000 electric lights, its brick walls and steel beams” made it, along with Henry Flagler’s Ponce de Leon hotel in St. Augustine, one of “two great hotel wonders of the world.”

The Tampa Bay Hotel put the city on the map, but it fell on hard times within a decade of Plant’s death in 1899. According to the book “Tampa’s People with a Purpose,” the once-grand old dame became “a red elephant that was at times occupied by vagrants who burned some of (Plant’s expensive) furniture to stay warm.” It closed its doors during the Great Depression and is now part of the University of Tampa.

The former hotel remains Tampa’s most Instagrammable landmark, though many visitors leave without visiting the excellent Henry B. Plant Museum inside, which gives a colorful account of the hotel’s early days. (If you plan to visit other attractions along the city’s Riverwalk, like the outstanding Tampa Bay History Center , the Glazer Children’s Museum , the Florida Aquarium or others, consider buying the new Riverwalk attraction pass .)

To get a different perspective on the hotel’s iconic domes and Tampa’s skyline, you can rent an electric boat from eBoats Tampa and take a spin on the Hillsborough River, making pit stops at watering holes like Rick’s on the River and gliding by the Davis Island mansion formerly owned by Derek Jeter and rented by Tom Brady before it sold last year for $22.5 million.

I got the electric boat recommendation and many others from Steven Hoffstetter, a fifth-generation Floridian and a Tampa native. “We hate St. Pete and they hate us,” he joked. “Seriously, I prefer Tampa.”

Mr. Hoffstetter stressed that visitors must spend time on the water to understand the culture. He recommends taking a charter excursion via Tampa Bay Fun Boat to boozy Beer Can Island (a.k.a. Pine Key) which has a bar (“open when the weather is good, the water is calm and the hangover is manageable”), but no permanent inhabitants.

To understand Tampa’s watery geography, you must learn the legend of José Gaspar, a Spanish pirate who reputedly stole a ship in 1783 and sailed to the Gulf of Mexico, where he and his crew raided with abandon until 1821, when their ship, the Gasparilla, was sunk by the U.S.S. Enterprise. Gaspar, the legend goes, wrapped himself in the ship’s anchor chain and threw himself out to sea, proclaiming, “Gasparilla dies by his own hand and not his enemy’s!” Gaspar was largely forgotten until 1904, when Louise Frances Dodge, a society editor at the Tampa Tribune, cooked up the idea for a pirate-themed parade based on his legend.

If you happen to be here in late January, you can party with thousands of revelers, many dressed in pirate garb, who turn out for the Gasparilla parade along Bayshore Boulevard, which is turned into a “wet zone” where open containers of alcohol are permitted. Hundreds of pirates perform a ceremonial invasion, in which the mayor hands over the keys to the city. But what many visitors don’t realize is that the Gasparilla revelry continues after the initial invasion with a season worth of activities, including music and arts festivals and the Sant’Yago Knight Parade . The debaucherous celebrations are only-in-Tampa spectacles worth anchoring a trip around.

Another singular Tampa experience is taking a boat to the Sunday morning Thai market at Wat Mongkolratanaram , a stunning Buddhist temple with boat docks on the Palm River. Come early to beat the crowds who flock to this popular market for cheap, homemade Thai food and beautiful orchids and other flowers.

Cigars, baseball and barbecue

In a modern city, the natural tendency is to search for something old. The best place to experience Old Tampa is Ybor City, a neighborhood that was once famous for producing quality cigars. Its main drag, East 7th Avenue, is the city’s pulsating nightlife hub. Visitors rarely stray off 7th Avenue, but several treasures are hidden around the neighborhood. Start with the Ybor City Museum , where you’ll learn the fascinating story of the neighborhood’s founder, Vincent Martinez Ybor, a Spanish businessman in Havana who ran afoul of Spanish authorities in 1868 for supporting Cuban independence.

Facing the prospect of death by hanging, he escaped to Key West, which lacked adequate transportation links for his cigar business. He built Ybor City in 1886 as a planned industrial community at a time when Tampa had just 2,735 residents. (The area’s earliest inhabitants were the Native American Calusa, and the word Tampa comes from the Calusa word “Tanpa” which meant sticks of fire, a reference to the area’s legendary lightning strikes.)

Tampa came to be called “Cigar City” as legions of Cuban, Spanish, Sicilian and Romanian Jewish immigrants streamed into Ybor to toil in its cigar factories. The industry drifted into a gradual decline starting in the 1920s, but you can tour the J.C. Newman Cigar Company , the city’s last cigar factory, and enjoy stogies at many neighborhood establishments.

Around the corner from the museum, the recently opened Tampa Baseball Museum chronicles the region’s baseball history in the childhood home of Al López, Tampa’s first pro ballplayer. Tampa has been the spring training home to seven teams, dating back to 1913 when the Chicago Cubs trained there. Meanwhile, the legendary Yankees teams of the 1920s, ’30s and ’50s trained in St. Pete and have been in Tampa since 1996. Teams were lured to the region to promote tourism, and spring training games, which run this season until April 6, are still a big draw.

A good spot for lunch is Al’s Finger Licking Good Bar-B-Que , where you can sit at the counter and inhale the smoky goodness of pulled pork and ribs, or dine outside, where you’ll hear the neighborhood’s clucking chickens, which have their own fan club, the Ybor Chickens Society . Another nearby hidden treasure is Barriehaus Beer Company , which has excellent German and Czech-style lagers and a kid- and dog-friendly beer garden. If you have a sweet tooth, cap your Ybor City tour off at the century-old La Segunda Central Bakery , which is famous for its three-foot-long loaves of Cuban bread, Cuban sandwiches and irresistibly buttery treats, but has an off-the-beaten-track location just north of Ybor City’s historic district.

The best way to navigate Tampa’s sprawl of less-heralded neighborhoods is to eat and drink your way around town. Inflation is a buzz kill, but luckily the immigrants who run the West Tampa Sandwich Shop and the Saigon Deli haven’t received the raise-your-prices memo. The sandwich shop is a hangout for Cuban immigrants, and their $4.50 Cuban sandwich is a bargain, as is the $4 grilled pork banh mi at Saigon Deli (3858 West Waters Avenue), a wondrous, yet humble, Vietnamese eatery hidden away in a strip mall alongside a Vietnamese market and cultural center.

While we’re talking four buck treats in Tampa, put timeless Bo’s Ice Cream (7101 North Florida Avenue), a Seminole Heights institution run by four generations of the Bosanko family since 1954, on your dessert itinerary. Bo’s has excellent custard, and their ($4) “small” hot fudge sundae with whipped cream and nuts is big and appropriately sinful.

The Seminole Heights, Tampa Heights and Hyde Park neighborhoods are silly with worthwhile hidden locals’ joints you ought to try. Call ahead to get a password to enter Ciro’s Tampa , a beautifully appointed speakeasy-style cocktail bar in an old hotel-turned-condominium building. On a residential street in Tampa Heights, you’ll find perhaps the city’s best pizza and wings at Lee’s Grocery , a pizzeria and bottle shop with a dog-friendly patio. And near the airport, the humble, eight-table One Family Korean restaurant is hidden between a Korean supermarket and a Korean cultural center at the end of a strip mall where you can get awesome bulgogi (thin, marinated slices of beef or pork) and delicious Korean barbecued short ribs as a reward for finding the place.

Green spaces

Tampa can seem like a sprawling mess when you’re driving around busy six-lane roads in search of hidden $4 sandwich shops, so make time to decompress in green spaces like Lettuce Lake Park, where you can rent a canoe or kayak ($25 for up to four hours, no reservations), and Hillsborough River State Park ($6 entry per car), where you can hike in an Old Florida jungle on an easy 2.5-mile loop via the Baynard and River Rapids trails.

As I made one rewarding discovery after another while cruising Tampa’s broad avenues, I concluded that the city’s hidden charms are impossible to catalog in a systematic way. Make your own tracks and cover them well. I prefer to leave some nearby terrain unexplored so I never feel like there’s nothing left to discover in my own backyard. But for two weeks, I commuted across the Bay, living the life of a Tampeño, all the while feeling a bit like a spy, perhaps even a traitor. I learned that Tampa isn’t the bland and forgettable city I was told it was, and I enjoyed every minute of my subversive travels to the other side.

Tampa’s Edition named among best new hotels in the world

  • Sharon Kennedy Wynne Times staff

Travel + Leisure announced its 18th annual “It List” of the best new and renovated hotels, and Tampa’s new Edition made this year’s list along with luxury resorts across the globe.

Tampa’s first five-star hotel is the jewel of Water Street Tampa, the $3.5 billion downtown development from Lightning owner Jeff Vinik and Bill Gates’ Cascade Investment. The opulent hotel had a grand opening party in October that brought out celebrities like Lenny Kravitz, who gave a private, VIP-only concert at Amalie Arena.

For Travel + Leisure, the Edition keeps company on the list with a mountain oasis in Morocco , an over-the-top beach resort in Bali, and city-chic properties in Berlin, Doha and New York , among others.

“You’ll know you’re in Florida the minute you step into the lobby’s verdant forest of palm fronds,” the magazine raved. “And you’ll know you’re at the white-hot Tampa Edition because, as a guest, you just breezed past a line of locals hoping to get in at one of the hotel’s seven dining spots, now among the city’s most coveted bookings.”

Michelin-starred chef John Fraser was brought on to lead the food program for hotelier Ian Schrager, credited with co-creating the “boutique hotel” category of accommodation.

The magazine went on to praise the Edition’s clean lines, pale woods and pops of color in the interior design, a sizable gym and spa and spacious rooms “smartly designed for luggage-storage, with plenty of outlets for everyone’s devices.”

This year’s It List is available now online and in the May issue of Travel + Leisure, on newsstands April 21.

(For the purposes of this article, the terms Tampa and Tampa Bay are used interchangeably to refer to this US city located on the west coast of Florida near the Gulf of Mexico.)

Table of Contents

1. Go Wild at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay

Attention all roller-coaster, theme park, and animal fans!

Busch Garden’s Tampa Bay has an amazing reputation for being one of the most fun things to do in Tampa. There is literally something to do for everyone here as Busch Gardens features rollercoasters, water rides, children’s rides, and animal shows, and exhibits.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is home to some of the nation’s most thrilling coasters including Tigris (Florida’s tallest launch coaster), Iron Gwazi (North American’s fastest hybrid coaster), and Cheetah Hunt (the area’s longest roller coaster).

Not only that, but the park also features one of the biggest zoos in North America. Over 300 species of animals including kangaroos, alligators, cheetahs, and sloths call Busch Gardens Tampa Bay home.

With an abundance of things to do here, plan to arrive early, pack light, dress appropriately, and grab a map .

Additional planning tip: Busch Gardens provides an entirely different (more adrenaline-pumping) theme-park experience than neighboring Magic Kingdom and Universal Studios , which are located only 70-miles away.

2. Explore the The Florida Aquarium

The Florida Aquarium is conveniently located in Downtown Tampa and is within walking distance to some of the best hotels in Downtown Tampa Bay .

The aquarium features over 7,000 aquatic plants and animals from Florida and around the world. Species include octopus, stingrays, tiger sharks, and sea turtles who are housed in some of the cleanest and most fascinating exhibits you will ever see.

As a non-profit organization endorsed by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the Florida Aquarium is a leader in conservation and education.

Additional planning tip: The cost of general admission varies based on what day you visit. Plan to spend 2-3 hours here.

Click here to discover our list of the most fun things to do in Tampa Bay with families, from Top US Family Travel Blog, Travel With A Plan!

3. Visit ZooTampa at Lowry Park

For more awesome animal encounters, head to ZooTampa at Lowry Park.

Another one of our favorite animal habitats, ZooTampa features animals such as panthers, rhinos, elephants, black bears, and an amazing manatee rehabilitation center.

What makes ZooTampa different, and one of the most fun things to do in Tampa is the up-close-and-personal animal experiences that can be had here.

Guests are allowed to touch the tortoises, feed the giraffes, feel the stingrays, and get photos taken with a koala, for example.

Additional planning tip: Be sure to ride the open-air, custom-made Expedition Africa Safari Tram that winds its way behind the scenes and through the Africa exhibits. The 15-minute long narrated ride is included free with your admission.

Sparkman Wharf (Fun things to do in Tampa!)

4. Sparkman Wharf

Sparkman Wharf is a fun, surprisingly kid-friendly hub of restaurants and retail shops found along the Garrison Channel in downtown Tampa.

The Wharf is home to a collection of colorful shipping containers that have been turned into food stalls, as well as an eclectic mix of other outdoor dining options.

Kids are able to run and play in the large open grassy area and eat chicken tenders from Flock and Stock while parents sip on a delicious craft brew from the Fermented Reality Biergarten.

5. Play at Adventure Island

No Florida family vacation would be complete without some outdoor waterpark fun in the sun!

Located directly across the street from Busch Gardens, Adventure Island is Tampa’s premier waterpark and is definitely one of the most fun things to do in Tampa with kids.

Their classic waterslides, wave pool, children’s water playground, and lazy river provide hours of both thrills, relaxation, and fun.

Additional planning tip: Arrive early for fewer crowds. Plan on a lot of walking as the waterpark is very spread out.

If you’re looking to head to the beach instead, we recommend Clearwater Beach (25 miles away), or our favorites, Siesta Key Beach , or the beaches of Sarasota, Florida (both 60 miles away).

TECO Line Street Car (Fun Things to do in Tampa)

7. Ride the TECO Line Street Car

The Tampa Bay streetcar system first started operation in the late 1800s in order to transport Tampa passengers for work and leisure.

The current TECO Line Street Car system operates on a 2.7-mile line and features historical replica streetcars of the original Tampa Streetcar Line.

There are 11 covered stations where you can hop on or off with stops that connect Downtown Tampa, the Channel District, and Ybor City.

Service is free seven days a week which is why you should add a ride on the historical street care to your list of fun things to do in Tampa.

6. Check Out Big Cat Rescue

Tampa’s Big Cat Rescue is one of the world’s largest accredited sanctuaries for exotic cats. They are a leading advocate for ending the abuse of captive big cats and saving wild cats from extinction.

Big Cat Rescue is home to lions, tigers, bobcats, cougars, jaguars, and other species that have been abused, orphaned or retired from performing acts.

Guests here are led around by a volunteer tour guide which gives you a chance to ask questions, as well as to hear the individual stories about the various cats.

Consider Big Cat Rescue if you have members of your travel party who are interested in education on animal cruelty and the preservation of wildlife species.

8. Museum of Science and Industry

Located in North Tampa, The Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) is a Tampa attraction that combines both education and fun; a perfect combination for family entertainment.

Similar to our Chicago itinerary , most big cities offer a Museum of Science and Industry that provides hands-on exhibits related to science and space.

Though Tampa’s MOSI isn’t as big as other museums we’ve been to, we still consider it to be one of the most fun things to do in Tampa for kids. The majority of the exhibits here are geared toward children vs. adults and make for a memorable experience.

Additional planning tip: The MOSI planetarium ($5), Sky Trail ropes course ($7), and virtual reality simulator ($8) are welcomed add-ons to its reasonable general admission prices.

Click here to discover our list of the most fun things to do in Tampa Bay with families, from Top US Family Travel Blog, Travel With A Plan!

9. Browse the Tampa Riverwalk

The Tampa Riverwalk provides 2.6 miles worth of paved trails along the Tampa waterfront.

The Riverwalk walkway begins north of downtown Tampa at the Heights Public Market,  continues along the shores of the Hillsborough River, and ends at the Sparkman Wharf.

Great for walking, biking, or jogging, the Tampa Riverwalk connects the area’s parks, museums, restaurants, bars, and hotels while providing amazing scenery and sunsets.

Any visit to Tampa must include the sights and scenes of the Tampa Riverwalk!

Additional planning tip: For ease of exploring, browse the Tampa Riverwalk via segway tours or a bike rental .

10. Dine at Height Public Market at Amature Works

Heights Public Market was once a streetcar depot and has now been turned into a 22,000 square-foot open-concept dining hall.

What makes Heights one of the most fun things to do in Tampa is its pure uniqueness and the fact that the Bay Area’s tops chefs are featured here.

With over 14 vendors offering both quick-serve and table service dining, cooking classes, wine tastings, and pop-up dinners are also offered.

Family-friendly options include BnB (awesome house-smoked meats & sandwiches), AVA (authentic wood-fired pizza), and Bake n’ Babes (a local bakery and home of the best chocolate chip cookie you’ll ever eat).

Pirate Water Taxis (Fun things to do in Tampa!)

11. Ride the Pirate Water Taxi

The Pirate Water Taxis are a fleet of bright-yellow, open-air, pirate-themed water shuttles (You can’t miss them!).

The water taxis operate in a hop-on-hop-off style in that guests riding the taxi can get off at a location, spend as much time as they want there, and then get back on to continue riding.

The best part about riding the Pirate Water Taxis is that the entire ride is fully narrated with historical insights and funny pirate references.

There are 17 stops that each feature unique attractions, museums, restaurants, and parks. Be sure to get off at Stop 16 to have food and drinks at Ulele, our favorite, and one of the best restaurants in Tampa !

Additional planning tip: Tickets may be purchased on board at any stop, online, or at the ticket booth located at Stop #7, the Tampa Bay Convention Center.

Admission includes unlimited rides and hop-on-hop-off privileges for the entire day. Check the schedule and rates here.

Best Places to Stay in Tampa Bay

If you only have one to three days to spend in Tampa, I would definitely recommend staying in Downtown Tampa, close to the action.

Likewise, I would recommend narrowing down your choices by staying in a hotel that is closest to the downtown restaurants and attractions that you are interested in checking out.

Our top recommendations for family-friendly downtown Tampa hotels are Embassy Suites Tampa Downtown Convention Center , Home 2 Suites by Hilton Downtown Tampa , and Residence Inn by Tampa Downtown .

JW Marriott Tampa Water Street and Hilton Tampa Downtown are also popular choices for families of 4 or less.

I had no idea that there were so many things to do in Tampa! We stayed nearby several years ago and didn’t do much but lay on the beach. 🙂 Hopefully we’ll soon be able to travel again because I could use a warm weather vacation in Florida!!

Yes, Tampa is great! I do prefer a beach vacation, however, so usually 3 days there is enough for me 🙂

I’ve been to Tampa many times (with and without kids) and I’ve literally done NONE of these! How is that possible? Is big cat rescue still taking visitors?I’m sure its crazy popular because of Tiger King!

🙂 Now you have some fun activities to add to your list for when you go there again 🙂

I’ve only recently started to realize how cool the Tampa area is. The Riverwalk looks particularly delightful — as do the pirate references in the Pirate Water Taxis.

Thanks for reading! I often don’t think of going there for a family vacation because it is not on a beach, but there are so many fun things to do there that it is just a different type of vacation 🙂

Can’t wait to return to Florida when our border opens back up again!

So true! Thinking of you and all of my readers/friends overseas!!

My kids would love all of these things – but an outdoor water park in the sun might just be the winner! That street car looks like great fun to ride. A really useful itinerary. I just hope we are allowed to actually fly to the States this year as per our original. but now rolled over 2020 plan. Crossing fingers!

Yes, fingers crossed indeed! Thanks for reading and for the thoughtful and sweet comment!

Which careers remain popular with new graduates in New York?

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Spring is a time of new beginnings — flowers bloom, warm weather returns and new graduates head out into the workforce.

Heather Difino is the director of career services at St. John Fisher University. She works with students during their time there, helping them discover what career best suits them.

“Realizing what you like is great, but realizing what you don’t like is half the battle," said Difino. "You should know what you’re looking for in an opportunity.”

The top industries new graduates are heading into haven’t changed much over the last five years. Health care remains popular, along with human services and business careers, according to Difino.

“We're still seeing healthcare increase in employment, even after the pandemic," said Difino. "I wouldn’t say it’s a new trend there’s still a need, especially in mental health services.”

Another popular industry for 2024 graduates might surprise you. Difino says she’s seeing a lot of interest in travel and leisure-type jobs. Another draw to the travel industry is the flexibility it offers. Difino says graduates are looking to have the ability to be their own boss, something more available in this field.

“Those fields have more of a gig economy, a lot of grads are looking for part-time or a side hustle," said Difino.

She says it’s taking grads an average of six months to land that first job. Understanding what skills you can bring to a job, having the right documents and being kind to yourself can go a long way.

Tampa International Airport: Nonstop flight to Frankfurt, Germany, expands to daily route

travel and leisure tampa

TAMPA, Fla. — Flying directly to Germany from Tampa Bay now can happen any day of the week.

Tampa International Airport announced starting Monday, May 27, Discover Airlines is offering its nonstop service to Frankfurt, Germany, as a daily route.

Previously, flights to Frankfurt operated for four days at launch in 2021. TPA expanded the availability to five days in September 2023. The airport said more than 270,000 passengers have taken the nonstop Germany flight since its availability.

Discover, previously known as Eurowings Discover, is based out of Frankfurt where it operates 24 aircraft, according to the airline's website.

Passengers who choose the airline can also now experience the newly enhanced services with Premium Economy Class. The service includes food and drinks served in porcelain and glasses, a cheese platter and a wide range of soft drinks, wine and beer available.

Discover explains this is to reduce using disposable materials on flights.

"Since the beginning, the leisure airline has placed significant emphasis on minimizing the use of plastic on board and testing alternative materials. For example, there is no plastic packaging for blankets and bamboo cutlery in Economy Class has been the Go-To from day one," the airline said in a statement.

There are up to 31 seats available for Premium Economy Class, depending on the aircraft.

Discover offers flights in only five cities in America, including two other Florida cities, Orlando and Fort Myers.

Southwest Has 30% Off Flights to Florida, Hawaii, the Caribbean, and Beyond — When to Book

Travelers can take advantage of the sale with Rapid Rewards points.

Southwest Airlines has made it cheaper for travelers to plan their next beach vacation.

The sale, which ends tomorrow, May 23, at 11:59 p.m. PT, has up to 30 percent off Southwest flights to Florida, Hawaii, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America. Travelers must use promo code “BEACHES” under the promo code box when searching for flights on Southwest’s website .

The available travel dates will vary by route. Flights within the continental U.S. can be booked for travel between Aug. 6 and Nov. 20. On the other hand, flights to Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and international destinations can be booked for travel between Aug. 20 and Nov. 20. Furthermore, the following blackout dates apply:

  • Continental U.S. flights: Aug. 29-30, Sept. 2, Oct. 13, and Oct. 20
  • Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and international travel: Aug. 29 to Sep. 3

All Santa Ana flights are excluded, and this promotion has several other route and date restrictions to note.

The easiest way to see if the savings will apply is to try applying the promo code across several routes and using flexible dates to find the best deals. If the flight is eligible for the 30 percent discount, a green banner will appear that reads, “Score! Promo code BEACHES has been applied.”

Travel + Leisure tested the promo code across many one-way flights in its “Wanna Get Away” fare class:

  • Baltimore to Tampa: $95 ($128 without the promo code)
  • Nashville to Destin: $114 ($154 without the promo code)
  • Kansas City to Orlando: $148 ($195 without the promo code)
  • Los Angeles to Honolulu: $184 ($252 without the promo code)
  • Houston to San Juan: $191 ($257 without the promo code)
  • Phoenix to Maui: $205 ($281 without the promo code)

Travelers can also search for these discounted flights by redeeming Rapid Rewards points . For instance, the same flight from Baltimore to Tampa can be booked for just 6,000 points. It’s also possible to pay with a mix of “points + cash” thanks to Southwest’s newest payment option.
