From the outset of her career, the work of PJ Harvey has commanded attention. A multi-instrumentalist, she is primarily a vocalist, guitarist, and pianist.

In 1991, Harvey formed the eponymous bass/drums/guitar trio in Dorset, England, and by that autumn had released the debut single 'Dress' on independent label Too Pure. Dry, released in March 1992, was hailed globally as an astonishing debut album, particularly in the United States, where Rolling Stone magazine named Harvey 'Best Songwriter' and 'Best New Female Singer' of 1992.

In 1993, she signed to Island Records and released her second album Rid Of Me. The album, supported by a lengthy world tour, brought Harvey her first Mercury Music Prize nomination. The original trio dissolved, and Harvey's solo follow-up, 4-Track Demos, was released in the autumn of 1993.

To Bring You My Love, an eclectic and starkly original album followed in 1995, and was accompanied by live performances that saw Harvey explore a more theatrical edge on stage. She received her second Mercury Music Prize nomination, two Grammy Award nominations, and 'Artist of the Year' awards from both Rolling Stone and Spin.

Her fourth album Is This Desire? released in September 1998, attracted plaudits globally, gaining several BRIT and Grammy Award nominations. The much anticipated follow-up, Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea, was released in October 2000 and went on to win Harvey's first Mercury Music Prize. 'Stories...' was supported by a sold-out worldwide tour. After a summer of live dates, including the first rock concert to be held at London's Tate Modern gallery, Harvey finished work on her next album, Uh Huh Her.

White Chalk was her critically-acclaimed seventh studio album, which marked a departure as it was composed almost entirely on piano. It was supported by a string of notable solo performances including Manchester International Festival, The Royal Festival Hall, the Hay-On-Wye Festival of Literature, the New Yorker Festival, Sydney Opera House, and a performance at Copenhagen Opera House for the Crown Prince couple.

In 2006 PJ Harvey: The Peel Sessions was released - a collection of recordings for the veteran British broadcaster John Peel, spanning her career to date.

Harvey's 2011 album, Let England Shake, was created with long-standing collaborators Flood, John Parish, and Mick Harvey. The songs focus on both her home country and events further afield in which it has embroiled itself. The record evokes the troubled spirit of its time, whilst also looking back through our history. Let England Shake won Harvey her second Mercury Music Prize, setting her apart as the only artist to have won the award on two occasions, an achievement recognised by The Guinness Book Of Records. The album was also awarded 'Album of the Year' at the 2012 Ivor Novello Awards and was named '#1 Album of the Year' by numerous publications including The Sunday Times, Los Angeles Times, Mojo, Uncut, Washington Post, The Guardian, NME, Spin, Sydney Morning Herald, Le Matin, OOR Magazine, Irish Times, The Independent, and The Sunday Telegraph. Prior to the album's release, in May 2010, Harvey made a guest appearance on BBC1's Andrew Marr Show, the week before the UK General Election. She was interviewed by Marr and performed the song 'Let England Shake' in front of Marr's other guest, the then Prime Minister, Gordon Brown. She was invited back on the show in April 2011 alongside Brown's successor, Prime Minister David Cameron, and performed the song 'The Last Living Rose'.

Let England Shake was accompanied by 12 short films by award-winning photojournalist Seamus Murphy. Murphy, with whom Harvey began working in 2011, has spent over two decades documenting the world through his lens. His work has taken him to Rwanda, Eritrea, Kosovo, Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria.

Harvey's work with Murphy continued over subsequent years, with the pair accompanying each other on trips to Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Washington D.C. This unique artistic, journalistic, and photographic journey became Harvey's ninth studio album, The Hope Six Demolition Project. In early 2015, the album was recorded during a month-long unique residency called 'Recording in Progress' at London's Somerset House, during which audiences were given the opportunity to observe Harvey at work with her band and producers in a purpose-built studio housed in the basement of the iconic London building. The Hope Six Demolition Project was released in April 2016 and became Harvey's first UK number 1 album.

In 2019 Harvey released her first original theatrical score album, All About Eve, via Invada Records & Lakeshore Records. The 12-track album contains 10 original pieces of instrumental music as well as two new songs written by Harvey and sung by Gillian Anderson and Lily James. Harvey's score for All About Eve is performed by herself, James Johnston, and Kenrick Rowe, and uses Franz Liszt's 'Liebestraume' (a musical element of Joseph L. Mankiewicz's original 1950s classic film) as a musical touchstone, exploring the more somber and deeply psychological aspects of the story.

2020 saw the start of a comprehensive reissue campaign which saw PJ Harvey's entire back catalogue - plus her two albums in collaboration with John Parish - reissued on vinyl over the course of 12 months. For the first time, each of PJ Harvey's album demos were also made available as stand-alone albums on vinyl, CD and digital.

In the summer of 2023 PJ Harvey released her tenth studio album, I Inside the Old Year Dying, via Partisan Records. Co-produced by Flood and John Parish the album was nominated in the Best Alternative Album category at the 2024 Grammy Awards. Soon after its release she toured the UK and Europe, with her bandmates John Parish, Jean-Marc Butty, Giovanni Ferrario, and James Johnston. To develop the live show she worked with director Ian Rickson, who had also directed the live shows for the Let England Shake and the Hope Six tours.

COLLABORATIONS:

PJ Harvey has collaborated with a wide range of musicians, including Thom Yorke, Nick Cave, Tricky, Sparklehorse, Josh Homme, John Parish, Pascal Comelade, Gordon Gano, Ramy Essam and Mark Lanegan. She also wrote, recorded & produced material for Marianne Faithfull's 2004 album 'Before The Poison'.

In 1996 she worked with John Parish on Dance Hall At Louse Point, both an album and a live accompaniment to the Mark Bruce Dance Company production of the same name. The follow-up collaboration with Parish, entitled A Woman A Man Walked By, was released in 2009 ahead of an extensive tour of Europe and America. The video for the first single, 'Black Hearted Love', was directed by the acclaimed British artists Jake & Dinos Chapman.

Her work with photographer Seamus Murphy has seen them collaborate on two albums: Let England Shake and The Hope Six Demolition Project, as well as Harvey's debut book of poems, The Hollow of the Hand and the feature-length documentary A Dog Called Money.

COMPOSITION, SCORING AND ACTING:

Harvey has composed extensive soundtracks for film and television, in 1994, covering 'The Ballad of the Soldier's Wife' for the documentary 'September Songs: The Music of Kurt Weill', and in 1996, contributing 'This Is Mine' with Nick Bicat for Coky Giedroyc's film, 'Stella Does Tricks' and 'Who Will Love Me Now', again with Bicat for Philip Ridley's 'The Passion of Darkly Noon'.

In 2009, Harvey composed the soundtrack for renowned director Ian Rickson's New York production of 'Hedda Gabler'. They worked together again in 2011 on the music for Ophelia in 'Hamlet' at the Young Vic, starring Michael Sheen, and for his highly acclaimed 2014 production of 'Electra' at The Old Vic starring Kristin Scott Thomas. She also scored Rickson's "The Nest," as well as "The Goat" starring Damian Lewis. In 2024 Harvey's original score with songs co-written by playwright Ben Power will feature in Rickson's 'London Tide', produced and presented by The National Theatre.

In 2019, Harvey was commissioned to score Ivo Van Hove's West End production of 'All About Eve,' starring Gillian Anderson and Lily James. Her artistic process on this and previous scores was documented by BBC Radio 4 journalist Jon Wilson, as part of the BBC's highly respected 'Behind the Scenes' series.

Harvey contributed original music for the BBC's 'Peaky Blinders' Series 2, starring Cillian Murphy, and the radio drama productions, 'Eurydice and Orpheus' by Simon Armitage and 'Orpheus and Eurydice' by Linda Marshall Griffiths. Other projects have included soundtrack work on the films 'Basquiat' by Julian Schnabel, 'The Cradle Will Rock' by Tim Robbins, 'What's This Film Called Love' by Mark Cousins, Sarah Miles' 'Amaeru Fallout 1972', which she also appeared in, 'Dark River' by Clio Barnard, and 'Six Feet Under'. Her tracks, 'Horses' and 'Bobby Don't Steal' featured in Mark Cousins' 2012 film, 'What's This Film Called Love'. Original music by Harvey features in Shane Meadows' 2019 drama series, 'The Virtues,' including the end credits song "The Crowded Cell." Harvey also co-wrote the music to Sharon Horgan's 2023 series 'Bad Sisters' with composer Tim Phillips, including the theme song, a cover of Leonard Cohen's "Who By Fire". They also co-composed the music for the show's second series.

As an actor, Harvey appeared in the 1990 film, 'Lost in the Stars' and as Mary Magdalene in Hal Hartley's movie 'The Book of Life' in 1998. She also had a cameo appearance in Sarah Miles' 1999 film, 'A Bunny Girl's Tale'.

In addition to her musical career, Harvey paints, draws and creates sculptures. Summer 2010 saw Harvey guest design Francis Ford Coppola's art & literary magazine; Zoetrope: All-Story. The issue featured her previously unseen paintings, sculpture and drawings. She contributed artwork to Beat Magazine in 2015 and a photo montage she created appeared in Vogue Australia in 2016. She continues to paint and draw, and some of her latest work will be released in the special edition of her new poetry collection.

OTHER NOTABLE PROJECTS:

In August 2013, PJ Harvey released the song, 'Shaker Aamer', to highlight the detention of the then last British resident held without trial inside the US prison at Guantanamo Bay. The track was streamed exclusively on The Guardian's website and received positive worldwide attention. Aamer was eventually released two years later in October 2015.

In June 2017, PJ Harvey collaborated with Egyptian recording artist Ramy Essam, and producer John Parish, to write and record 'The Camp.' The song was created to raise awareness and funding for The Beyond Association, a national Lebanese NGO. Beyond's work provides access to education, healthcare, and psycho-social support for displaced children in the Beqaa Valley of Lebanon.

In 2008, Harvey appeared on 'Private Passions' on Radio 3. She was a guest editor on BBC Radio 4's Today Programme in December 2013, and in 2017, Radio 4 broadcasted a 15-minute drama, 'On Kosovo Field', inspired by PJ Harvey's notebooks and poetry from her travels in Kosovo, written by Fin Kennedy.

PJ Harvey's first collection of poetry titled The Hollow of the Hand, in collaboration with photographer Seamus Murphy, was published by Bloomsbury UK in October 2015. To celebrate the release, Harvey and Murphy presented The Hollow of the Hand - two sold-out live events of poems, new songs, images and conversation at the Royal Festival Hall - as part of the London Literature Festival. Her poem, The Guest Room, was first published in The New Yorker in 2015.

On 4th November 2015, PJ Harvey appeared alongside Irish poet Paul Muldoon in a new experimental series of 'In Conversation' style evenings called 'Soundings at the Byre', created by the University of St. Andrews' new International Writer in Residence, Reif Larsen, and Professor of English, Don Paterson.

PJ Harvey continues to study poetry under the tutelage of friend, mentor and editor Don Paterson. Harvey's second book of poetry, Orlam, a beautiful and profound narrative poem set in a magic realist version of the West Country, was published in Picador Poetry hardback format on 28th April 2022.

A special edition incorporating Harvey's own illustrative artwork followed in October 2022'. Orlam is not only a remarkable coming-of-age tale, but the first full-length book written in the Dorset dialect for many decades. Harvey undertook a headline and Literary Festival tour of Orlam across 2022 and 2023, during which she also engaged in 'In Conversation' discussions with several hosts including Max Porter, Frank Skinner, and Amanda Petrusich.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITION:

In 2013, Harvey was awarded an MBE for services to music. The following year, she was awarded an Honorary Degree in Music by Goldsmiths, University of London. She has been nominated for eight Grammy Awards, eight BRIT Awards, and is the only artist in history to have won the Mercury Music Prize twice.

i got the best footjob of my life at the pj harvey concert 😆

PJ Harvey 5 stars - Warsaw (venue), notso much

PJ Harvey was transcendent... her poetry, conversation and performance were absolutely a special event. Thankful I had a chance to see this small tour. HOWEVER, Warsaw really screwed the pooch with the seating - the chairs and aisles were absolutely crammed onto the bottom floor, making it impossible to sit with any leg room (I was literally sat with my legs wrapped around the chair in front of me) and I nor my aislemates coudlnt even dream of getting up because it would disrupt the entire area. Warsaw, if you read this - please space out the aisles, that layout was pretty miserable.

PJ HARVEY Never Disappoints!

I love this venue! The sound is great, every seat is a good seat. I didn't like PJ's new material, but I love her and her voice is always amazing. She did some of her old favorites, so it was all worth it:)

PJ's eclectic tastes mesmerize but show runs short

PJ and her band were fine, even quite good. They sounded spot on. The weakness here was that there was no opening act and she only played maybe an hour and a half, seats were obstructed and there was no indication on the tkts that was the case...Got what I paid for...

Her setlist was mostly songs from her new album (The Hope Six Demolition Project), but every song she did was exceptionally performed. A live setting is truly the best way to experience PJ Harvey's voice.

Speechless!!! This is a true artist at the top of her career!!!!

Excellent Show

Great mix of new and classic songs. PJ has great stage presences and the band was fantastic.

No opening band for this somewhat brief (90 minutes or so) show, but at least we all got home early. Focused largely on the most recent two albums - that was disappointing to some of my friends, but I thought the show was thematic and brilliant. Quite similar to the show last August at the Shrine in LA, but the first encore of Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" sent it into the stratosphere. Great vibe; great band; recommended.

PJ Harvey was incredible and powerful!

She played a nice selection, mostly her most recent work, outspoken in a political and humanitarian way.

PJ Harvey - GREAT!

Great show by PJ Harvey at the Greek Theatre! She sounded amazing, was visually stunning and her band did not disappoint. This is one of the best shows thus far this year.

PJ Harvey Announces First North American Tour In Seven Years

Steve Gullick

I Inside The Old Year Dying was PJ Harvey’s first album in seven years, so naturally, she’s heading out on her first North American tour in seven years in support of the album. The 16-date trek takes her from coast to coast this fall.

In addition to the tour announcement, Harvey has shared the video for her song “Seem And I.” Directed by Colm Bairéad, it stars Ruth Wilson and was filmed at Kennel Farm outside Salisbury, England. Harvey’s statement:

Ruth and I became friends after working together on Clio Barnard’s film Dark River . I have always greatly admired Ruth’s work as an actor, so had long harboured a dream that we might work together again in some way. When the opportunity to work with Colm Bairéad came up I knew him to be a director Ruth thought highly of, as I did, so it felt right to ask her if she would star in the film. I find the resulting short film beautiful and moving for having Ruth’s magical presence, and Colm’s unique vision.

Below, watch the video and check out the dates.

SEE A FULL LIST OF PJ HARVEY TOUR DATES

Last year saw the release of Harvey’s tenth studio album I Inside the Old Year Dying , which arrived summer of 2023 to end the seven-year gap that had amassed between her last record, the 2016 The Hope Six Demolition Project . The upcoming tour will heavily feature the songs from that recent album — which includes “Seem an I,” a track that the English artist has now shared a music video for. Directed by Irish filmmaker Colm Bairéad and filmed at Kennel Farm outside Salisbury, England, the film is a stunningly momentous visual experience. One that stars British actor Ruth Wilson in the sole role as the camera pans to follow her sprinting to the resonant tune of Harvey’s ethereal voice.

Harvey said of the collaboration: “Ruth and I became friends after working together on Clio Barnard’s film ‘Dark River’. I have always greatly admired Ruth’s work as an actor, so had long harboured a dream that we might work together again in some way. When the opportunity to work with Colm Bairéad came up I knew him to be a director Ruth thought highly of, as I did, so it felt right to ask her if she would star in the film. I find the resulting short film beautiful and moving for having Ruth’s magical presence, and Colm’s unique vision.”

Fans can expect a truly magical spectacle at these upcoming shows. Harvey enlisted theatre director Ian Rickson , set designer Rae Smith , lighting designers Paule Constable and Louisa Smurthwaite , and fashion designer Todd Lynn , to create the experience.

Watch PJ Harvey pay tribute to Steve Albini at Primavera Sound 2024

The festival recently named a stage after the legendary producer

PJ Harvey and Steve Albini

PJ Harvey dedicated a song to Steve Albini at Primavera Sound  at the weekend.

  • READ MORE:  Steve Albini, 1962-2024: engineer who shaped rock’s most visceral moments

Harvey and Albini worked together on creating her second studio LP, 1993’s ‘Rid Of Me’.

The legendary record producer – who was the mastermind behind iconic albums such as Nirvana ‘s ‘ In Utero ‘ and Manic Street Preachers ‘ ‘Journal For Plague Lovers’– died last month of a heart attack while at Electronic Audio – his recording studio in Chicago.

On Saturday (May 31) Harvey said during her performance in Barcelona: “I would like to sing this next song in memory of Steve Albini. Steve should have been here for this festival, and it would be nice if you all think of him.”

She then proceeded to perform ‘The Desperate Kingdom Of Love’ from 2004’s ‘Uh Huh Her’. Watch the performance below

Albini was due to play with his band Shellac at the festival last Thursday (May 30).

Recommended

They were fixtures at the Primavera Sound Festival for almost 20 years, performing at every incarnation since 2008. Shellac first played the festival in 2006, missed the following year, returned in 2008 and have played every year after that.

Last month the festival named a stage after Albini in his honour .

A statement from Primavera read at the time: “Farewell, Steve. Although it will be the first year since 2007 in which he will not command the inimitable Shellac at his annual date with his favourite festival, the figure of the late Steve Albini will be more present than ever at Primavera Sound.

“The Steve Albini stage, situated opposite the Plenitude stage, will be a tribute to an irreplaceable member of the Primavera family, although he will, in fact, be honoured in every inch of the Parc del Fòrum, during every second of the festival.”

Following his death, Harvey also paid tribute to the late producer, sharing a photo of the front and back cover of ‘Rid Of Me’ .

She wrote at the time: “Meeting Steve Albini and working with him changed the course of my life. He taught me so much about music, and life. Steve was a great friend – wise, kind and generous. I am so grateful. My thoughts are with him and his family and friends as we suffer his loss.”

Upon its release, ‘Rid Of Me’ landed the Number Three spot on the UK charts and the Number 10 spot on the Bilboard US Heatseekers Albums Chart. The LP would go on to garner admiration from various musicians such as Elastica , Karen O , Courtney Love , Alanis Morissette , Phoebe Bridgers and Ethel Cain .

Harvey's score for All About Eve is performed by herself, James Johnston, and Kenrick Rowe, and uses Franz Liszt's 'Liebesträume' (a musical element of Joseph L.

Her tracks, 'Horses' ad 'Bobby Don't Steal' featured in Mark Cousins' 2012 film, 'What's This Film Called Love'.

In August 2013, PJ Harvey released the song, 'Shaker Aamer', to highlight the detention of the then last British resident held without trial inside the US prison at Guantánamo Bay.

PJ Harvey was amazing (again)!

This would be the third time that I have seen PJ Harvey; and because of the (WaMu theatre) venue, this would be the closest I have been able to watch her live. We stood on the general floor very close to the stage as we got there an hour before the band had started. She played allot of music from her latest album (which is still growing on me), but she played some old hits too like Down by the water, To bring you my love, 50ft Queenie, and ended her show with the River. Her voice and band sounded amazing, and PJ has always impressed me when I have seen her perform.

All hail Queen PJ

Incredible! Seen here a few times and this was just as amazing

PJ HARVEY A solid show.

From beginning to end this show showed PJ is a total professional. She could have been more outgoing, but overall worth the price.

CoolMontréal

Great show! It is one of the best performance that i have ever seen.

Polly Jean Harvey - Outstanding!

Simply put - the best show I have ever seen and I have seen a few from the Stones to The Who and everything in between! Trying to go see her at the Edinburgh Festival in August.

Its about time

Been a while since she came to Montreal. Totally worth it

great gig, but venue not so much

PJ Harvey has an amazing voice and is touring with a great band. I love the music and atmosphere of the concert, but the venue does not have good places to actually see the concert if you are: 1) short and 2) does not arrive very early to find a place to stay in front of the stage. Unfortunately, I was unable to see the band, since there were many tall people in front of me and no matter where I tried to go, it was impossible to see the stage.

unforgettable PJ Harvey

excellent show!!! great performance, great woman, great band

PJ Harvey!!!!

What a show! Been waiting for many years to see her live and she was better than I expected. Most of the set were songs from the past two albums. My only gripe was she played only one encore song, in total, the set was under 1 1/2 hours.

Magnificent

Truly amazing amazing show and well worth the 22 year wait! Ms Harvey and her band were spot on providing a powerful experience that was both cerebral and visceral. Hopefully she will return to the great city of Montreal again soon!

Primavera Sound Barcelona 2024: 7 Best Things We Saw

  • By Althea Legaspi

Althea Legaspi

Primavera Sound Barcelona has long been renowned for brilliant lineups in an idyllic setting, the setting flanked by the Mediterranean Sea with the Spanish city as its backdrop. This year’s iteration was no exception, drawing an estimated 193,000 people from around the world to witness an eclectic mix of artists that included Lana Del Rey , SZA, Pulp , Troye Sivan , and PJ Harvey .

But Primavera’s appeal goes beyond the music. It serves as a reminder of what drew fans to festivals for decades prior: bonding over music, feeling a sense of community, and enjoying cultural experiences in an unhurried, relaxed setting. From crowd flow to food offerings to later start times, it was all these little things that — as a Primavera first-timer — added up and took the experience of seeing great music in a great venue from fun to fantastic.

There’s no consensus amid those in the industry on the precipitous lack of ticket sales as we head into summer 2024 summer fest season, but some cite a dearth of headliner talent. Others cite the cost of tickets, which doesn’t even factor in the cost of travel and accommodation for non-locals. There is also the growing push of multiple VIP levels, which even smaller fests like Pitchfork are capitalizing on for the first time, and at some fests the VIP areas take space away from the general ticket holder to get closer to the stage to see their favorite acts.

You Don’t Even Need a Ticket to Catch Some Primavera Offerings Seriously. Charli XCX , who performed at the fest, also played a free surprise show in the middle of the day on Saturday for anyone who turned up.

Committing to Equity In 2018, several festivals pledged to achieve a 50/50 gender balance in its lineups with the goal to achieve it by 2022. Primavera Sound was the first major festival to accomplish it, and they did so beginning in 2019. Its focus on an inclusive lineup — a 42.36 percent equal split of women and male artist ratio, and a 15.28 percent representing non-binary and mixed project musicians — was palpable just strolling between sets at any given moment. And though unfortunately, two major acts pulled out prior to the festival — Kim Petras, who dropped out of her summer fest dates citing “health reasons”; and FKA Twigs , who was also scheduled to perform last year’s installment but did not perform then, either — the intentionality of the festival showcasing diversity was still felt throughout the weekend. Saturday was a standout in this regard, with the topline comprising SZA, PJ Harvey, Mitski, Charli XCX, Bikini Kill, and Romy. Lana Del Rey’s set the night before was also among the most crowded come headliner time. Also shout-out to Japanese girl group Atarashii Gakko!, whose spirited, sassy set showcased quirky, acrobatic choreography and songs that spanned J-pop and J-rock styles with their own playful twists — it was a total delight.

Amaarae was originally slated to perform on Saturday but her time slot and performance day was changed. That meant people could catch her packed set on the first day of the fest. The way her stage was situated, you could see her and hear her perfectly perched to the side of the stage’s location. The same kind of vantage came when heading over to see the Last Dinner Party, whose set included the excellent “My Lady of Mercy” and the whirling dervish deliciousness of “Nothing Matters.” Theirs was an early set for the fest, commencing at 6:50 p.m., yet their stage area was crowded. However, sitting way back from the crowd at the stage we could see and hear everything without obstruction.

All Fests Should Start Later During the official festival days, the first artists do not go on before 4:30 p.m. and that is genius for both artists and attendees. Relatively newer artists, such as the Last Dinner Party, played to a full house. This does also mean that Primavera Sound goes late and hard with the last set ending at 6 a.m., which works well for the jet-lagged set, but it also works well in other ways. Generally, the full-on dance party portions of the lineup begins after 1 a.m. (Justice, Disclosure, Charli XCX all being perfectly scheduled for the late-night post-recharge times) and some fans don’t even arrive until then, or even later (everyone with a fest pass can leave and come back at any time before 3 a.m.). It also means if one is on a budget, one is not stuck inside the venue with no other options but to spend more on food and drink. Speaking of eating, the fest also allows attendees to bring in their own food and an empty water bottle with no cap to refill at water stations. Honestly, this should be the way everywhere.

PJ Harvey performed in a downpour befitting the solemn and sweet goodbye she bid to her friend . Typically not one to banter much between songs, Harvey took a touching moment to reflect on the loss of Albini, who served as the engineer for Harvey’s trailblazing 1993 album, Rid of Me . “I would like to sing this next song in memory of Steve Albini,” she said before performing a goosebump rendering “The Desperate Kingdom of Love,” a heart-wrenching track from 2004’s Uh Huh Her . “Steve should have been here for this festival. And it would be nice if we all think of him for this song.” As well, she performed songs from the album they worked together on, including “50ft Queenie” and “Man-Size.”

Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker paid tribute to two Steves during their set on Thursday. “So, this tour has been a strange one,” he said. “It started in the U.K. last year… and it’s the first tour we’ve done without Steve Mackey our bass player [who died in March 2023 ], he passed away. We intend to dedicate this song to him.

“There’s another Steve that passed away recently, Steve Albini. I know that there’s a stage now named after him here at the festival.” Lightening up the mood a little, he added, “If you’re called Steve, don’t get worried,” he said, cracking a small smile. “This is a song about life, really, about when you meet a certain person, they change your life and your life goes in a direction you could never ever think of.”

They performed “Something Changed” from 1995’s Different Class in honor of Mackey and Albini, who Jarvis worked with on his solo album, 2009’s Further Complications .

‘georgia is our laboratory’: inside trump’s plan to rig 2024, kim porter’s dad breaks silence after sean combs attack video: 'despicable', 'deadpool & wolverine' teaser has people arguing if these legs belong to taylor swift or blake lively.

Vampire Weekend didn’t mention the Trump news, but Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker did during their orchestra-backed set that followed. Ever the legendary, charismatic frontman, who commanded the stage with banter and jokingly asked if the audience minded if he had a little rest on a couch onstage between crowd favorites that included “Disco 2000,” “This Is Hardcore,” and after “Pink Glove” — he wasn’t going to let history slip by without comment. “Maybe things will change. Donald Trump got found guilty on all charges,” he said, raising his arms in the air to loud cheers. “That could be good, see the fucker in prison.”

So, thanks for making history, Vampire Weekend, Pulp, and Primavera Sound, it’s these unforgettable shared musical memories that will long resonate. Hasta la próxima!

Glastonbury has announced its full line-up, with the final acts added to the bill ahead of the five-day event kicking off later this month.

Nigerian pop star Tems and indie rockers The Zutons will play on the Other Stage - the event's second-largest performance space.

It was previously announced that Dua Lipa , Coldplay and SZA will headline on The Pyramid stage .

Country pop superstar Shania Twain will perform the Sunday afternoon "legends slot" on the festival 's famous Pyramid Stage.

Scottish indie rockers The Snuts, Liverpudlian singer Jamie Webster, rock duo Soft Play and rising star Rachel Chinouriri are also among the acts who have been added to the line-up.

With stars including Little Simz, Avril Lavigne, Jessie Ware, Janelle Monae, Cyndi Lauper, PJ Harvey and Camila Cabello on the bill alongside Dua Lipa, SZA and Twain, it is a line-up filled with female acts - and the first time that two out of the three headline performers will be women.

The strong female line-up comes after organisers were criticised for having all-male headliners last year, with Arctic Monkeys, Guns 'N' Roses and Sir Elton John, performing his last-ever UK gig , topping the bill.

Which other acts are playing and when?

Rock band Squeeze will open the Pyramid Stage on Friday at midday, followed by rising star Olivia Dean, K-pop group Seventeen and singer Paul Heaton.

Later, PJ Harvey and LCD Soundsystem will warm up for Dua Lipa as she headlines the main stage on Friday night, which will be her Pyramid Stage debut.

Other highlights on Friday will include D-Block Europe and Idles playing the Other Stage, while Jungle top the bill on West Holts and Fontaines DC head up the Park Stage.

On Saturday, the main stage will welcome Nigerian singers Femi Kuti and Ayra Starr, followed by US '80s chart-topper Cyndi Lauper and rock band Keane.

Mercury Prize winner Michael Kiwanuka and British rapper Little Simz will also play on the Pyramid Stage in the evening before Coldplay tops the bill.

It will mark the rock band's first Pyramid Stage appearance since 2016 and make them the first act to headline Glastonbury five times.

Meanwhile, on the Other Stage, the Saturday line-up includes Brit rising star winners The Last Dinner Party, US singer Camila Cabello and electronic duo Disclosure.

The main stage on the final day will open with a performance by Interlinked Ballet, with Seasick Steve and Paloma Faith set to take to the stage in the afternoon.

They will be followed by Twain who is expected to play her hits including Man! I Feel Like A Woman!, You're Still The One and That Don't Impress Me Much during the legends slot.

US singer and actress Janelle Monae and Nigerian singer Burna Boy will take over for the evening session before US star SZA closes out the Pyramid Stage with her hits including Saturn and Kill Bill.

Sunday will also see US star Avril Lavigne, Northern Irish band Two Door Cinema Club and US rock band The National perform on the Other Stage.

With the festival known for pulling off surprises, there will no doubt be a few secret acts during the event, including in the 6pm slot on Saturday on the Woodsies stage, marked "TBA".

In previous years, acts such as the Foo Fighters, The Killers and Radiohead have surprised festivalgoers in these secret slots.

The festival will also pay tribute to the late DJ Annie Nightingale, the first female presenter on BBC Radio 1, who died in January at the age of 83.

Tickets for this year's Glastonbury were snapped up in under an hour when they went on sale in November. A resale of any cancelled or returned tickets in April sold out in just 22 minutes.

The event, which hosts more than 3,000 acts and around 200,000 people on site, will take place from 26-30 June.
